this is an amazing album. it's worth it just for the ferron song, but the
joni mitchell covers, _cherry bomb_ and all those tiny sound bites are
pretty cool too. get this one - just for remembering all those 70s tunes :-)

hi--way back there was some list discussion regarding the line from strange
fire "to interpret calvary...". i don't recall exactly what was discussed
but i was reminded of it yesterday when i passed the good old calvary
cemetary here in evanston, il. i have no dictionary handy and would really
like to know what this line means. i definitely used to think it was
cavalry and that made no sense. what exactly does calvary mean--i did
poorly on my sat verbal section :). someone please re-enlighten me.

literally "place of skulls." it is the hill where jesus was
crucified, just outside of the walls of jeruselm. "interpreting
calvary" is trying to interpret jesus, his life, his death, and his
resurrection.

hello everybody!
i think my last post was mistakenly sent to the ig list.
it was actually intended for some of my co-workers. sorry!
in other news, i lost my ig@nuacvm account (like you care)
and now i'm iggy@hopper.library.nwu.edu. i hope none of
you have any difficulty fitting this startling new fact
into your (already very complex) lives.
as a further complication, i lost the ig account several
weeks ago. so, (corollary) any mail you might've sent to
me went undelivered.
god, that was a bad sentence. unfortunately i can't edit
at all with this dang mail software.
newport was a wonderful experience i'll treasure forever.
as soon as i can carve out a little time to call my own
(preferably during work hours), i'll relate every last
detail of my trip. and that's a promise.
yup, i sure did miss you. "i picked you this bouquet".

i didn't know what emily's girlfriend looked like; i didn't even know
emily had a girlfriend; but i was taking shots of backstage
goings-on from a distance with my 200 mm lens, and thinking i was about
to get a heartwarming shot of emily hugging a fellow performer, and i caught
them both kissing on b&w film. then i felt guilty for invading their
privacy. but how was i supposed to know they were gonna kiss? anyway,
it was during joan baez, and i haven't developed them yet because the trip
left me broke. (btw, i haven't posted in months. does anyone remember
me? - sniff -)
did anyone else have a manual zoom camera? how did the shots come
out considering the low light?
i was front row! my friend had backstage passes, but i didn't take
advantage cause i couldn't figure what i'd say if i saw them. "shucks,
you're music sure is groovy."

jesus that sucks. sorry to hear it. i can offer some advice (that you
probably are already aware of, but just in case) - make sure to check all
the local cd resell stores because no self-respecting upstanding ig fan
would steal cd's so they will probably end up there quickly. or maybe
not, but it's worth a shot... especially for all of the rare stuff...
good luck,

okay, mr. dwayne d. jarrell...if i so asked for it, then what are you doing?
and, um, this may be news to you but,
you are not the only person on this d_mned list.
you don't care? i believe you, and i don't care. never though for a minute
you would. but there are people out there, amongst the
however-many-hundreds-there-are, who *i* don't know if **they** care. maybe
no one posts to you (i'm not finding myself wondering why...???), but some of
us enjoy mail from random listers. if some person on the list, whose posts i
enjoy and occasionally respond to, disappeared, i'd not be a happy
camper--b/c if i was ever planning on continuing correspondence, they would
never have know to send me the new address personally. get it? yet?
this is completely ridiculous! i'm sitting here, having to explain something
as i would to a 7 year-old, stating the obvious and having to point out for
you the every dynamic of a stinkin' elementary school social sciences
lesson!...
so dwayne, either you make me to look like a fool, and only cause yourself to
be an ass, or you are a fool. methinks it's the former. you should hope so.
but that even goes to show the level of maturity we're dealing with here,
listpeople. so _go ahead_, dwayne! go ahead and put me down, dwayne! just
go ahead!! <dramatic sob> sticks and stones, dwayne!!! sticks and stones!!!
that's it--put me down so you can have a feeling of superiority,
subconciously engaging your self-defense mechanisms due to an unrecognized
self-inflicted anger resulting from deprivation in the oral stage of latency,
seeking to sooth for a short, fleeting time your inner pain, thinking that
you are placing yourself in a position higher than me in the social ladder of
our peers, hoping it will gain you higher status in their eyes, in reality
only mirrorring by transferance the playing out of this situation with your
mother, against whom you begrudge a deep-seeded anger, though suppressed
thoroughly and expressed in passive-aggressive behavior!!! < b r e a t h e
> but, alas! ........little do you know, dwayne! if only you knew!!--oh,

just thought i'd let you all know that michelle malone was about the best
i've ever seen her last night in another solo gig at eddie's attic in
decatur. she played for about a hour and a half, including quite a few
humorous stories, including (if you can believe this!) one about the fact
that she just returned from vacation to the beach and has taken up golf!
anyway, she played some of the standard stuff, but also played many new
songs, including one that she'd never played in public before (i think it's
called dimming soul). she said the band's playing quite a bit for the next
two months, then they're returning to the studio to record the new album, but
she never said what label they were going with this time around. and yes, for
those of you who might be interested, emily and her partner (sorry, i can't
remember her name) were there. emily seemed to be as relaxed as i've seen her
in quite a while.
if you're in the area, band de soleil will be at ruperts in atlanta thursday,
then they leave for a stint in colorado again. michelle's playing another
solo gig at eddie's when they return, on friday sept. 8.

on the subject of indicated iii, i am going to resuggest an idea i had
previously. a list version of jesus christ superstar. we could break up
into groups by region and get together as a group and put together a track.
i know of several people that live within an hour of me (scratch that, a
couple of hours of me, and as a group, we can do a song, and i am sure that
there are others on the list within a few hours of others that wouldn't mind
getting together with others to do a song. i personally would like to put
together a group to do "this jesus must die" or "damned for all time", and i
don't even need to play judas, i would be very satisfied playing caiphas, and
almost prefer it. i know this sounds either very silly or extremely
difficult, but let's think about it. maybe our uk contingent can donate a
song as well as those in australia, assuming they are not too far from each
other. let's talk about this a little bit, before we completely trash the
idea. there are a lot of good musicians on this list as indicated i & ii
have proven, as well as several lousy ones, but no matter what your skill
levelis (my voice rots, but i would love to do a track or two) you can
contribute to this idea. i hope to get some responses from this idea,
hopefully some will be positive, but if not, that is fine as well.. talk to
y'all soon.

i'm not sure about future shows.....i don't think there's any planned...and
i haven't heard anything yet about boots from seattle...there is a boot
floating aroung from the sunday show here in atlanta back in november...i've
also heard that daemon records will release a professionally made video from

much like the cd does....word as it it's in the late stages of editing so it
shouldn't be too much longer hopefully....now back to our regularly

personally, i love it. it's worth it just to hear ig's version of "southern

not to mention, i think the inside cover picture with a&e sitting on the

oh yes! i was going to say something the first time you posted this, bert, but
well, ummm.....i didn't. i think it's a great idea. this could be a lot of
fun, and as the person from utah mentioned, it's a great oportunity for list
parties!! i know we got lotsa folks in the pa, nj area. (cuz i know about 5 or
6 of you personally) so let's do this! what about "the last supper" oooh, what
a fun song, or "hosanna"? another fun crowd thing. or the ones you mentioned
would be cool too, bert. we need some good amy's. amy's anyone? amy's? and
since it's berts idea, how about we make bert keep a list of the jcs tracks,
and who's doing which tracks so we don't get duplicates? oh, and btw, i don't
think this should stop us from doing i3 as well.
so who's got some recording equipment?
my, aren't we the busy little list?
oh, and while i'm here, and i have everyone's undevided attention, :) i was
browsing through a local music store on saturday when what should i run across
but the so songbook. bummer, because i had just placed the phone order the
previous day. i could have gotten it sooner, and minus s&h costs. as it is i'm
still waiting for it. but, i of course paged through it and saw all the pics.
anyone seen it yet? how about that one of amy from above practicing some song
or another and wearing (ack!!!) really thick dark framed glasses? what the
hell???? i can't quite remember now, but i'm pretty sure they weren't shades.
these were _glasses_, and they were really...well, i won't say it, but let's
just say that _i_ wouldn't wear them. :) (oh, and if anyone who has the
songbook looks at this pic and sees i'm totally wrong, then never mind.)

i will have a few songs ready for indicated iii. this weekend i hope to finish
"hammer and a nail". if i ever get my so songbook, i may also do something from
so.
neil, come on now, what song(s) did you record?
jcs cover tape - i may have to break down and buy this cd - it sounds like
everyone loves this! if i actually get this cd, i may record a song from jcs.
so count me as a solid "on the fence" for now.
a live indicated - here's one option: someone could compile a video version of
indicated. with the availability of video cameras these days, each contributor
could videotape their performance (non-musicians could even record their
lip-syncs). everyone send their tapes into the "compiler" who would then copy
the tapes onto a master - then make copies from that.
if anyone's interested, there is a pink floyd tribute tape (yours truly
performed two songs) just coming out and i am probably going to organize an eric
clapton tribute tape. anyone interested in contributing to the clapton tape?

maybe i'm missing something, but why would you keep any cd, much less $600

i don't think the comparison that is being made here has anything to do with
eras, or effect on society as a whole. while it is correct to say that their
is no comparison between the scope and size of the effect of the grateful
dead and ig on a worldwide level, comparisons can be made to the effect both
groups have on their core fan bases. while it is not too common for people
to give up their lives for an extended period of time and just follow ig for
months at a time (although joe hamilton is the closest to it i have
seen),people have been known to devote a week or two out of their life to see
a bunch of ig shows. the fan tour that i organized last summer is a perfect
example of this. the fact that 48 people (and more would have if there was
enough space) spent a week of their life on buses and in hotels together with
the primary goal being to see amy & emily in concert again and again proves
that there is something special going on here. something comparable to the
grateful dead, if not in size, then definitely in the amount of meaning they
have to their fans. and as far as an ben & jerry's ice cream flavor goes, my
friends and i are working on that, and during the folk festival, i was able
to approach both ben & jerry and propose a flavor named after amy & emily.
the proposal that i submitted to him was called indigo swirl crunch. the
ingredients are vanilla ice cream, chocolate covered blueberries (anyone who
has ever been to a starbucks coffee knows how populare these are), grape
nuts, and a blueberry swirl throughout. if anyone has any other suggestions
in this area, please post it publicly. i just finished reading the ben &
jerry's biography, and cherry garcia was born out of a single letter to the
company. i believe that a flood of e-mail messages to ben & jerry'
s corpoate office with a single, united request would have a very good chance
of success. the importance here is that everybody submits the same idea.
thus, suggestions are welcome, and after all the suggestions come in, we can
vote. all submissions should include both the name of the flavor and its
ingredients. although nothing is written in stone, and if there is anyone
with a better idea about how to approach this, please post it. talk to y'all
soon.
peace pops

i like this! and those of us with "talent" (as opposed to real talent)
could lip synch and not even try to be serious! (i.e., romeo and juliet

from: cam6674@is.nyu.edu (christopher a. morcomb)

it seems that not a day goes by in which someone doesn't make a post
requesting information on how the max points awards program works. the
following is meant to provide all the documentation that one would need in
order to take advantage of this program. this is not meant as an
endorsement of maxell or any of their products. if you have additional
information or spot any errors please contact me so that i can update this
file.
if you ever have any intention to take advantage of maxell's offer in the
future then please copy this file for yourself now, so that we can avoid
gluttering newsgroups with all of these "maxpoint?" posts.
========================================================================
the max point program has been in operation for the last three or four
years. each subsequent year maxell has make some minor changes in the
kinds of merchandise that one can acquire using max points". also the
address used to redeem points has changed from year to year, so don't rely
on old brochures for accurate information.
maxell points come with some maxell products, audio tapes, video tapes,
and diskettes. depending on the cost of the product maxell with provide
between 10 and 50 points to the consumer for each tape or diskette
purchased. note that not all tapes come with maxpoints (for whatever
reason).
maxell used to provide a redemption brochure with their products. this is
no longer the case. it has become increasingly difficult to obtain one of
these forms. at present one has to send an sase to maxell to obtain one
of the brochures. thankfully, maxell accepts photocopies of their
brochures, so when you do get your hands on one make as many photocopies
as you will need.
the current incarnation of the program allows you to redeem points for
the following items:
xlii audiotapes 150 pts/tape
man in chair poster 150 pts/item
gx-silver t-120 videotape 300 pts/tape
maxell t-shirt 300 pts
maxell headphones 300 pts
multi-media storage case 400 pts
cd wallet 400 pts
3 1/2" hd floppies (mf2) 400 pts/5 pack
cd or prerecorded cassette 750 pts
max awards sportsbag 750 pts
software
print shop 3,000 pts
quicken 3,000 pts
stacker 3,000 pts
cd and cassette boom box 7,500 pts
wireless headphones 7,500 pts
this list is valid until 12/30/95. all points must be sent in before that
date in order to receive merchandise from this brochure. it is not yet
certain whether or not maxell intends to continue with this program. the
offer is for residents of the united states and canada only.
for cd's and cassettes one has to request titles which appear on maxell's
"max awards music title list" of 2,500 selections. to receive this list
send a postcard with your name and address to:
max awards music title list
p.o. box 5802
kalamazoo, mi 49003-5802.
the list should arrive in three weeks. i have never redeemed points for
cds, so i'm unfamiliar with how difficult it is to receive this list from
maxell or what disks are represented on the list.
max points can be redeemed by sending brochures with affixed points to:
max awards frequent buyers program iii
p.o. box 5787
kalamazoo, mi 49003-5787
orders will be delivered within 8 to 12 weeks, although i have had to
wait longer. be patient.
large orders should be sent via registered mail. it is also a good idea to
make photocopies of your points sheets. maxell is not responsible for lost
mail so make sure you have yourself covered before sending anything out.
be forewarned, maxell misplaced one of my orders six months ago and i lost
21 tapes as a result.
i understand that some people have got away with sending in points
affixed to paper rather than an official brochure. i can't, however,
recommend this as i did so once

figure out how to use that big nasty computer, bert?) :) now having said that
i'll probably do something really stupid like send this to my advisor instead

thanks for drafting me lorindigo! :):):)
sure i will organize this, but the best recording equipment i have is a tape
recorder. i am sure we can all scrounge something up that is passable.
remember, its not the finished product that counts, only how much fun you
have putting it together. right!
on another note, i cannot believe you don't like amy's buddy holly glasses.
the first and only time i ever saw her with these was at the knitting factory
show, and she looked sooooo dorky it was cool. i guess to each his/her own.
peace pops

ps - i am going away for the weekend, starting today, so this will probably
be the last y'all se of me until monday. everybody breathe a sigh of relief!

hi folks,
i really like the idea of getting a flavour of ice cream named after amy
and emily. "indigo swirl" sounds good to me. vanilla ice-cream with a blue
swirl running through it. no nuts though as i hate them. amy and emily both
love chocolate so that might be an idea for one of the ingredients.
i discovered ben &jerry's ice-cream at the 1992 newport folk festival and
became addicted to cherry garcia..... and now we can buy it over here in
the uk!!! (sainsbury's sell it)
i really had to groan at the "amy raysin crunch" suggestion but it's made
me chuckle a few times today thinking about it. there are some truly
strange minds at work on this list<g>
so, because of all this talk i found the ben &jerry's www pages. here is
the information about new flavours:

i also like the idea of putting together some different versions of the
tracks from jcs. a group of us are planning to have an indigo girls get
together soon in scotland.....so maybe i can convince some of the group to
get something together. kerry are you listening to me?!!
i'm sorry for rambling... i'm working late again. chemistry tends to

just for the record, you guys, amy raysin crunch was meant to be a joke.
not that i don't think that amy ray is worthy of having her own flavor
of ice cream, i just don't think the world is ready for it quite yet.

...........yes but the idea was for indigo swirl crunch, and the
crunch comes from grapenuts which are not nuts at all, they are an
american breakfast cereal type food that is kinda sorta almost but not
quite like granola, sorta. anyway they are very crunchy...hence indigo
swirl crunch....but they are not nuts..ya see?

subject: ig news!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i visited the sony www site and i found out the title of the upcoming
ig live project: 1200 curfews!
the title comes from the many times ig played songs after they were
supposed to stop! the site also has an interview conducted with a+e
sometime after their last concert at the newport folk festival on
august 6. when they were asked if anything unusual had ever happened
during a concert, they each told different stories:
amy said that they were playing a concert in upstate ny and the
audience starts coming up on stage. they're were so many people on
stage, you couldn't see a+e anymore. the security guard got real mad
and when amy was trying to explain, she realized he was the same
guard that threw her out the last time that happened. they are now
banned from that venue!
emily said that once they were opening for rem in 1989 and a fight
broke out during the song land of canaan. some 13 year-old girls
were throwing m&m's and audience members stood on their chairs with
their backs to a+e watching the fight. a+e was screaming at them to
stop, but it was still a mess!
according to billboard, the boys on the side soundtrack has just gone
platinum. this makes the second consecutive time that a soundtrack
a+e has worked on has gone over a million in sales, the other time
was the philadelphia soundtrack!

this is the concert that bert lefkovic mentioned twice recently. first, he
said it was one of his favorite ig live experiences, and then he mentioned
that i got him really good tickets for it. the city was buffalo, the venue
was shea's (a gorgeous theatre), the date was 10/15/94, they did free bird
during tmf, and i have a great boot of it made by kristi markus. bert and
his friends and i were front row center. i remember it very well. :)
oh, and kristi got to meet a&e for the first time because she got backstage.
i will never forgot the cool haze she was in when i saw her later. :)
it's a shame a&e aren't allowed to play there again. it was certainly a
great show!

yes, this was one of my very coolest ig experiences, and it's neat to think
we share a memory with amy....even if we did get them in trouble :( of course,
shea's buffalo is the perfect venue for jumping up on stage because there is
a railing up against the stage that we out-of-shape thirty year olds can use
as a step :) in any case, when we were all piling up onto the stage during ctf,
amy looked kinda nervous and said something like "well, i guess we're havin'
a party" but emily was just smiling away...didn't seem to phase her a bit.
after the show, the ig guitar tech jimmy seemed to be having an argument with
venue security about how rough security was with the fans.
anyway, thanks to dwayne for the front row tickets...i have worshipped at
the altar of dwayne ever since :)

for anyone who still would like a copy of the jesus christ superstar
performance featuring amy and emily, recorded live at the austic
music hall, and broadcast on klbj, austin, in march of this year, the
following people have kindly volunteered to make copies (in exchange for
blanks and sase, of course). so that not everyone contacts the same
person, i've decided to split it up by birth month. so, for instance,
if you were born on oct. 12, you would contact maggie and make
arrangements on how to get a copy from her. each person gets 1.5 months,
in case you can't tell from my listing. also, not everybody (ok, nobody
right now) has their tapes yet due either to the mail being slow, or
everyone's busy lifestyles. be patient and be nice!
depending on the demand, perhaps some of these people would also
like to designate dubbers to take over. i will leave it up to the
individual dubber to decide that.

subject: how does ig rate?
there seem to be a lot of talented musicians on this list. since i can't count
myself among you (i
gave up the recorder in frustration in grade 5!), i am hoping you can explain
how ig rate as
musicians. to my untrained ears, ig songs sound wonderfully rich and
charismatic, both words
and music. but would a musician say, "wow! what an innovative infusion of
x-style and y-style--i wish i'd thought of that"or "it's been done before, but
never this well" or "wait a minute!
shouldn't i be getting royalties for this?" examples would be nice, so i can
have an excuse to
play those passages over and over again. also, do they do guest musician spots
on other people's
recordings?
thanks,
shanta <srohse@dafbbs.com>
who, for the good of the project, promises to have nothing to do with the jcs tape.

subject: first time
i know this is an old thread, but traffic on this list seems a little slow so i
didn't think anyone
would mind too much. i first heard ig, several months ago, while my head was in
an oven. in a
fit of cleaning, not despair! to help speed along dreary housework, i like to
crank the stereo with
something noisy and clanky like tchaikovsky's 1812 overture or beethoven's
anything.
anyway, i think, i put beethoven's fifth on spin, stuck my head into the oven,
and started
scrubbing at, i think, petrified feta cheese. but when i heard the beginning
strains of strange
fire, i thought to myself, "hey, just a minute. beethoven never wrote
lyrics..."
i had lent this cd, along with several others to a friend in search of culture
(man, did she come
to the wrong place, but that's another story). clearly, she had to have an ig
break in the midst of
all this culture, but, under the strain, she returned the strange fire cd to
the beethoven's fifth
sleeve before returning everything to me.
kismet. i was hooked. instantly. i'd never heard of ig before, but purchased
all the
commercially available cds within a couple weeks (thank-you, again,
stephen...but that's yet
another story). my first concert was jcs in seattle a couple of weeks ago where
they were as
charismatic in person as on tape.
shanta <srohse@dafbbs.com>
who is still has to get back to cleaning the feta cheese from her oven one of these days.

this is quite the interesting question. having studied classical music
since i was 6, played piano for 21 years, string bass for 15 years, and
started guitar 2 years ago (amazing how quicky i learned that with my
theory background), i can offer a little insight...
ig have taken the folk song into realms that it really hasn't seen
before. they take the basic folk/rock song structure (verse, verse,
chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus) and provide it with richer texture
than most before them. allow me to explain.
typically, the text of the chorus does not change. ig allows it the
freedom to change if need be, although not always. most folk songs have
parallel structure word-wise for each verse (case-in-point, big yellow
taxi by joni mitchell). ig rarely uses this, instead moving more towards
poetic variance, often with clever cross-verse rhymes. also, folk songs
traditionally do not use a wide a variety of literary allusions and deep
internal emotions to express their content. they tend to deal more with
a broad feeling, rather than get as personal as most ig songs.
musically, they are fairly traditional melodically, only they make great
use of counterpoint to reinforce/add to their ideas. kid fears is the
best example of this. at one point, there are 3 melody lines running,
all of them expressing the same idea, only overlapping to create a much
more universal, everyone-is-feeling-this feeling to the song. their
guitar playing usually consists of amy taking the basic chords and emily
doing various counterpoints or melodic noodling through it, creating a
much richer texture than one guitar ever could.
how do they rate? they create very rich textures that are easy to
reproduce (if you know the tablature), and their words are poetry
unparalleled.
examples are hard to bring up. i'd suggest studying their nomads indians
saints cd, because it has the greatest variety of approaches on it.
everything from amy's emotional nakedness to rock and roll to emily's
poetic insights.
although, imho, "ghost" on rites of passage is the pinnacle of their
songwriting.
hope this gives you a start, anyway...

subject: 'new' uk igs promo cd's...
hey :)
well, whilst i was out record fairing today, i picked up a couple of hitherto
unknown (to me at least) cds :)
indigo girls 'closer to fine' second uk withdrawn promo only cd single
6/95 epic 662166 5
closer to fine (3:59)
kid fears (4:56)
all along the watchtower (live) (6:23)
left me a fool (live) (5:30)
the front cover (with a pretty ace piccy of a flutterby) claims 'with
exclusive tracks'
but seeing as the first two are from 'indigo girls' and the second two from
'back on the bus y'all' then somehow, i doubt it...in fact, on the disc itself
kid fears is intimated by the copyright and recording details as being from
botby, but it isn't...
and second, a uk copy (and there is no promo sticker, 'though it must be...) of
power of two (epc 661347 2) which is the same as the us release except it's
in a standard uk cd single case, and k's choice are credited on the disc as
the choice...(it also claims unreleased tracks, although they're not...)
oh, and i don't think anyone's mentioned the uk promo pair of cd's for
4.5 and closer to fine...
4.5 the best of the indigo girls: epic xpcd650
closer to fine (one track promo): epic xpcd653
both in matching recycled card covers, with reproductions of the appropriate
artwork.
so there you have it...
oh, and i have a signed rites of passage casette i'm thinking of auctioning...
it's dedicated 'to kirsti' and amy has a picture of a dog drawn...
this once in a lifetime item appeated down the side of my stereo shortly after
a certain kirsti reeve came over...and she doesn't seem to have missed it, so
if you don't tell her i won't either :):)
take care...

ps, steve clark, if you're still here, could you email me the latest ig's

margaret,
i don't know if you remember me...but i was the one that did all the
bootlegging back in may and june and sent out about 250 tapes to
people..including you. anyway, i would be happy to help you out with a tape
tree. also, i haven't really had a chance to be reading all the gossip via
the list and so i haven't posted in awhile and i need to post something.
so, will you remind me of the address to send posts to. thanks!! i think
that some of the bootlegs i sent out in june to people got screwed up and a
couple of people received blank tapes with no music, so now that i'm back at
school, i want to fix all my mistakes...anyway, if you'll send me that
address and let me know how i can help you out, i would appreciate it. thanks!!
