subject:      kinda ig but not really...

hi all.  i used to receive all of your messages but had to put myself of
digest because i did not have time to read all of the posts.

anyway  - i'm just another pathetic fan (okay - don't take offence - i
just mean that i can *really* *really* relate to them and wish to spend
time "chatting" with them someday (ya right... join the ranks.)  instead
i choose to "listen" to ya'll because many of us are like-minded
spiritually with our deep connection to what ig has to share.  hence this
message.

i'm lonley.  life has been tough lately.  i'm losing my job (been with
the university of arizona library for over 4 years and now i'm getting
railroaded because i speak the truth.  i was also in a car accident this
week.  it is late at night and i wish to connect with people who might
give a damn.

last week i wrote two letters to amy and em.  i only sent one.  one of
them i gave them my national defence medal from the gulf war.  i've been
processing through the whole letting go of the incident (emotionally) for
me.  the ig's music kept me sane while i sat in saudi waiting for the
world to regain some sanity.  i wanted amy and em to have the medal
because *they* earned it.  i just sat there and listened to them until i
could come home and quit the service.  their music was the only media
that showed compassion, intelligence and love.  i needed that.  they
saved my ass.  so i hope #1 they get it and #2 they don't think i'm a
lunitic.

the second letter i did not send.  i keep listening to "the girl with the
weight of the world in her hands".  unfortunatly i can relate all too
well to the lyrics and want to know more about em's process in writing
it.  did she know me from a past life or something?  i'm so sick of the
being a victim routine but shit keeps happening.  i rescue cats dogs
people...i'm miss compassionate but i can't seen to join the human race
socially.

also, i can relate to amy.  she loves animals too.  in her credits and
"thank you's" she always refers to the critters.  it's like a soul
connection.  like "hey! amy!  i can relate!"

o'well.  enough crying on e-mail.  i'd love to have a few e-mail ig
friends.  pen pal types.  now i have more time to "chat".  (unemployed
sort-of).

thanks for your time
love and light
sandy

ps... has anyone *ever* received a letter back from them?  do they ever
receive or read fan mail?

this past weekend i had a great time at the philadelphia folk festival.
yes, i know, a&e weren't there.  however as a premium for subscribing to
sing out magazine at the festival, i received a cd called putumayo presents
the best of folk music (rhino records, 1993).  the girls' cut is hammer and
a nail.  i cannot find this album mentioned in the discography, and i
wondered if perchance anyone knows anything more about it than i.  from the
jacket, i understand it is partially a benefit for homeless people.

okay, here it is folks.

a new thread.

pick it up, kick it around, run with it, drop it in a public place
where innocent bystanders will pick it up...

you know you're a *real* ig fan when...
        - the phrase "na na na-na na-na na" makes you laugh out
loud in public for no apparent reason.
        - you have 5 copies of the same album... just 'cos.
        - "cypress moon... bald in june..." begins to seem like
        a genuine linguistic construction.
        - you get into a physical fight with someone over whether
the sf or the ig version of land of canaan is 'better'.

more, anyone?

hey all,

you know you've been listening to indigo girls too long when....

i was busy this weekend hacking up my research project, trying to find
a rather elusive bug in an enormous program.  i got tired of changing cds
as they ran out, so i put in rop and set the player for disc repeat.

as often happens in the debugging process, i needed to declare a scratch
variable to report on the program's state.  without thinking about it,
i named it "chickenman".

about this time, i realized that the disc had been playing for almost
twelve hours straight.  and that it was time to go to bed.

in-reply-to:  your message of fri, 25 aug 1995 13:23:01 -0500

this is an extremely hard, virtually impossible task.  choosing the best ig
concert expereince ever.  i have seen 31 shows, which is probably average
compared to others, but it is six times as many shows as any other group i
have seen.  there were so many great ones.  i think it would be much easier
to pick out the few shows that were real bummers, rather than try to pull out
a few great ones out of the many.  anyway, i will try.

state theater in new brunswick december ?, 1992 (i think that was the right
year) i was able to grab a front row seat that was left empty by someone who
decided not to use it (how stupid can you get).  they played love's recovery
and pushing the needle too far, which at the time were my favorite emily and
amy songs respectively.  lr is still my fave emily song, but i have added
strange fire and reunion to ptntf in a three-way-tie for fave amy song.  i
don't remember much else of that set list, but i just look back to that show
as a great experience.  it was the first time i had ever gone to a concert by
myself and i had a great time.  it was just me and amy & emily partying the
night away.

i want to go back in time a little to a shorter, but very special show.  it
was the planned parenthood benefit they played at wetlands preserve in nyc.
it was december of 1990 i believe, and nis had just came out.  they had just
played a show at the beacon theater a few nights earlier that was very good,
but this show was something special.  it was my first time ever seeing them
in a really small space (the $10 tour was still a few years away).  i don't
remember the set list, but i do remember being only five feet away from amy
for the entire show.  something else special that happened on this night; i
made it onto the rites of passage tour book.  for any of you that have it, go
to the centerfold where amy & emily are playing in a small place in front of
a beautiful large mural.  i am directly in front of amy ( well at least the
back of my head anyway) i have very short hair, with just a tinge of a bald
spot in the back.  this is my claim to fame; the back of my head is in the
rop ttour book.  well, it is something.

other amazing shows:

during last summer's fan tour, mann music center (front row center - crowded
up against the stage), action park (beautiful natural backdrop - opened up
with american tune with the sun setting behind them; very exhilarating) and
great woods ( a non-fan-tour show; i have to thank l. shampine for getting
the great seats; one of the few shows that no one told me to sit down while i
was up and dancing - i have had a lot of shows ruined by people behind me
pestering me to sit down when i want to stand up and dance.  is there anybody
who has experienced similar problems with these dullards who don't know how
to enjoy an ig show, or are there any dullards out there who have had their
good time ruined by someone standing up and dancing throughout the show.
both points of view are valid, it is a shame that a compromise is rarely ever
reached between the two factions.  maybe they should have special sections
for sitters and standers and then another section for people who like to do
both.  this way, everyone is accomodated.

on
oh, i forgot the knitting factory show.  100 people crushed into a tiny
room..  mouth pet was the opening act (peculiar, interesting, outrageous are
adjectives that come to mind)  if you have ever seen grady cousins, they are
a thrashy version of him, without the songwriting skills.  great show, very
short, but great.  amy wore her buddy holly glasses that were so dorky that
they were cool (i know you disagree lorinda, but...) two great covers.  amy
played a paul simon song "duncan" and emily did a joni mitchell song "for
free"(jane... play for free; fucking mtv) a great time was had by all.  even
though there were a few near-brawls as the place started to get crowded.

finally, i am going to end this post talking abo
i just have two more shows to mention. first, buffalo, october 1994.  wendy
buckelew opened.  i know that we are not supposed to mention opening acts,
but this was the second time in two nights that i had seen her open up for ig
and she was wonderful.  did a very gutsy thing and closed her set with her
instrumental, "different everytime".  but what truly made this show
memorable, and i know i have mentioned this before, but 1) front row center
2) freebird during tmf; it's not that i like this song so much, but i thought
it was hilarious that they chose to do that song and 3) 50 people climbing on
stage during closer to fine.  it made a very tired song into a wonderful
closing moment.  sorry about getting you banned a & e, but it was fun while
it lasted.

the last shownewport 1995 - first time - there are no words

that's all for now

peace pops

i'll kick in again on this one too. first a comment on amy p's post:

>eddie's attic, feb 10, 1993--anotehr chatty show.  loose and fun.
>the place was pakced (if there had been rafters peopel would have
>been hanging off of them) and there were plenty of spontaneous
>moments.  and even though she blew a line, i love this show becuase
>emily played "play it again sam" to fill time while amy replaced a
>broekn string on her guitar.  amy kept screwwing up land of canaan
>as well.

i have this boot, (although, sorry to say i wasn't there) and it _is_
wonderful. play it again sam is one of my faves, and the blown line and amy's
gentle correction from the sideline just make it more interesting.

now as you all probably know, one of my favorite shows was the tower,
philadelphia, 4/26/95. chickenman was the best i've _ever_ heard, and i've
heard some pretty amazing stream of consciousness chicken(men?) (man's?) by
now. it went on forever, and i felt like i was having a religious experience.
she just blew me away. this show also included a totally kick-ass tmf, as well
as the whole watershed-screw-up-multiple-lines-kick-into-"holiday-inn"-back-to-
watershed-thing. it was amazing. that was my second favorite show.

my _very_ favorite show was at franklin and marshall college on (i think)
5/7/93. wow what a show. they were very chatty and happy. it was right after
the ten dollar tour, so we got treated with play it again sam, (as i said, one
of my faves), _and_ romeo (ooooooooh!!!) _and_ amy doing chickenman with no
backup band so she was banging on her guitar so hard and so fast it just took
my breath away, (although this was in the pre-stream of consciousness days),
_and_ we got a second encore of (you guessed it) an american tune. wow, wow,
wow. still my all time favorite concert moment. the audience was dead quiet.
you coulda heard a pin drop. it was nothing short of perfect. simply gorgeous.
and to round the whole experience out, there was a _really_ funny moment. a
few seconds into a song (i can't remember, something from rop) there was this
horrible noise from the sound equipment. it was a hideous, low rumbling
feedback noise. amy called everything to a halt and exclaimed to the sound
guy, "what was that?!!!?" after some signalling and hand waving back and forth
she added, "it sounded like...a fart." after much laughter from her and the
audience she put in, "now we're 'the farting indigo girls.'" i thought i'd
fall out of my seat i laughed so damn hard. they sure have a sense of humor
about themselves! anyway, that's my story. since we're not getting any mail
these days, hope y'all enjoyed it. :)

the great spirited banter/exhuberance. and, hope you are enjoying the
delightful socal weather lately!

ps... what was it, mostly for you in regards to the igs that hooked you?
for me, it was the lyrics...although the harmony is a close second! and,
i'd be happy to lend ya my two older igs cds for taping purposes. once
i'd heard ritesofpassage, i listened to their old stuff and didn't like
it. in time, i've come to develop a different appreciation for nomads,
indians and saints. "hammer and a nail" for the lyrics/harmony reasons,
and "southland in the springtime" for emily's blissful tune-ability. so
lighthearted, and softly sweet.

again, welcome! take care. :>

hi everyone,

this is my first post to the list so i hope i'm doing everything correctly
(i know you'll tell me, sherlyn, if i'm not! :^) ). i've seen one ig video,
and it was a long time ago -- i have to admit that i'm not even really sure
which song it was, but i ended up being a bit disappointed. i'm someone who
really loves songs that tell a story, it's one of the things i adore about
ig, and i was expecting a video that told a story as well, and it turned out
to be a lot of strange imagery and words marching across the screen that
didn't have much to do with the song at all. or much to do with my own
impression of the song, anyway -- i know that i'm almost always completely
wrong about what a song is supposed to be about, according to the
songwriter... it seemed sort of hectic and mtv-ized, nothing that stayed on
the screen for more than a few seconds.

okay, here it is folks.

a new thread.

pick it up, kick it around, take it to lunch, drop it in a public place
where innocent bystanders will pick it up... :)

you know you're a *real* ig fan when...
        - you wish they would make amy and emily into ice-cream.
(or did i misunderstand that thread? :) ).
        - you have a quote for every occasion.
        - you understand amy's songs (or, at least, *think* you do).
        - thinking about emily's songs makes you cry.

more, anyone?

i just wanted to add that the best show(s) we ever saw were at the
botton line in nyc during the $10 tour.  it was worth standing in the
freezing rain for 8 hours.  they played two shows so they covered almost
every song and it's a very intimate club.  also, they let the first person in
line make up the set list (as they did for all the $10 shows)  i'm sure
anyone who was there can back me up on what an amazing night it was.     i
also wanted to add my $0.02 about their video.  of the 4 videos i have i
really think they are very clever and much better than most of the videos on
tv.  thanks for listening.

i picked up a copy of record collector as usual and read neil's article.
very well done to you. the article is well written and researched and a
must for any collector. it was great to see the illustration of the blue
food cover. i have a bootleg copy of  blue food but i've never seen an
original..... so thanks neil. so neil are you obsessed with the untitled
song or what? every time i've met you, you've mentioned it and you
mentioned it in the article. you emily fan you !!!!<g>

yeah, i really like that picture of amy. she looks so young and innocent.

seriously folks go and buy a copy when it eventually wings its way to the usa.

subject:      re: best concert ever

there are so many!!!

1) 1992 newport folk festival. my first trip to the usa and the first time
i heard the ig's. i was soaking wet, hungry and tired but very, very happy.

2) manchester academy, november 1994
amy sang the whole of touch me fall/cortez the killer standing on one
leg!!!!! she was just so intense that night, almost in a world of her own
up there. she closed her eyes and was gone. we made them laugh that night
too and got a thumbs up from amy for our efforts. that was our eleventh gig
of the tour.

3) birmingham irish centre november 1994
i was no more than two feet away from amy and the stage was at mid thigh
height. i'm only five feet five inches so you can imagine how low it was.
they sang crazy game which is my favourite emily song. i'm more of an amy
person because of the lyrics, voice and passion but crazy game just seems
to get to me. anyway, there was amy two feet away dancing without a guitar
in the way. they really liked the venue because they said it reminded they
of all the small sweaty clubs and pubs they used to play in. they explained
that they used to call time at the bar when they played those small clubs.
when last orders came the barperson sent them a couple of pints. emily held
hers in the air and said, "cheers queers...... and everybody else" amy
burst out laughing and said something like, "you've waited your whole life
to say that!!" a friend of mine  was invited up on stage that night to play
the tambourine during closer to fine. she was just so blown away.

to bert: they usually only play 2000 capacity standing venues over here so
you can stand and dance every night without anyone complaining and wanting
you to sit down. they encourage people to sing and dance. they think that
the english are so quiet and polite..... but they think that the scotish
are rowdy (calling kerry and mary)!!!
emily spent the whole of the november tour trying to get us to emote. they
find it a really strange concept that people over here stand quietly and
listen.... not like in the usa!!!! emily was so pleased when we all started
to sing along.

okay... here's something for discussion. if you had the chance to take
all the ig release cds (indigo girls, strange fire, nis, rop, swamp) and
order the songs in any way, how would you do it?
for the sake of this discussion, you can omit one song per cd.

order them thinking in terms of mood, theme, tempo, feeling, whatever.

i'm working on mine - looking for a way to have the emotion swirl higher
and higher as the set progresses.

this could be fun...

this has been happening to me lately, maybe some of you can relate.
often, i've been finishing my friend's sentences with ig lyrics.
for example:
a friend was describing someone to me the other day and said,
"she's got a chip on her shoulder.."  and i came back with,
"about the size of a mental block?" (make it easier by emily)
similarly, someone else said to me the other day,
"i woke up this morning.." and i interrupted with,
"grey dawn with a prayer on your breath?"
this must stop, i know.  but it is so easy!  does anyone else do this?
i sure hope so.  peace

good question!

i think either "ghost" or "love's recovery."  i think both of those
songs bring out the best in the girls.  the passion, the power, the
harmony, the intelegent lyrics, the beautiful yet dark imagry.  you
get the full experience of the psudeo-intimacy that we speak of
here--the feeling that a & e are right there in the room singing to
you and you alone.

i think i'll go put in rop....

as for the margaret thread on playing one song for someone i would have to
say closer to fine (down bert down).  i know we all have heard it a zillion
times.  but it is the song that someone played for me 5 years ago and it
won me over.  for a first time listener there is no other choice :).  take

language or the kiss
hammer and a nail
ghost
galileo (for the humor!)

the melodies and lyrics of any/all three will surely win over anyone

hey :)

thread a) (or is it b..or c...or??)

may i suggest tying someone to a chair, and playing them alternately
michael bolton, vanilla ice, and indigo girls.

if they have taste, they will choose the ig's (if you want to make it easy
for them, play the wrek version of the untitled song the definitive version,
(and i have to get it in at least once every post, hey, maybe we should all
unite and mail bomb russel carter's orifice with requests for the revival of
this classic. power to the people!!!! *remembers self*) *clears throat* yes,
the definative version...)

and if they don't agree, thay obviously have no taste, so just shoot them.

call it natural selection.

thread b)

best concert was detroit when elvis appeared onstage (and only because of
that...it wasn't memorable any other way)
followed by london last november for shear atmosphere and coolness
followed by cmu, '95  when i was up front (of the basketball arena)
snuggled up to my true love, right under emily's nose, and has anyone got a
boot of this, i need it. bad.

thread c)

asparagus. amy definately reminds me of asparagus.
and emily is a corguette.
this is for the indigo soups, of course, not the ice-cream.

thread d)

abba should definately cover least complicated

see, it doesn't take much to put me in a strange mood...

i just got off the phone again with the programming department at the
disney channel.  now they say that there will be an indigo girls
concert show on their channel, but that it won't air until october.
when i called the first time, i asked if the show would air in
september and they said no, but to call back in september.  at first
i thought they were saying that to get rid of me, but now i realize
that they said that because they would have more information on the
show then.  it wasn't made clear to me that the show even existed the
first time i called.  don't you love a straight answer?

it would make sense to air the show in october because that is when
1200 curfews and watershed will be released.  the show would make a
good tie-in.

i will keep you posted and to the people who saw the preview, i'm
sorry disney made me doubt you!

it's three, three, three posts in one!

you know you're an ig fan when...

-you wake up in the morning and you realize that you just had a very detailed,
long and bizzare dream about them, even tho they won't be touring any time
soon, and i makes you smile _all_day_long_  (post of dream may follow soon if
i find the time:)

-you find yourself arguing boisterously with people who think mark knoppfler's
version is better. (and if you don't know what song i'm talking about, you
need to go back to ig school).

-you're considering getting a tattoo. (anyone else?)

-you go through the _entire_ day with an ig song (_any_ ig song) going through
your head over and over and _over_ again, and by the end of the day it still
isn't bugging you.

-your _least_ favorite ig song is still preferable to your most favorite song
by any other non-atlanta artist.

-the phrase "na na na-na na-na na" means something profound to you. (sorry
sherlyn, but you didn't take this one to it's logical conclusion.) :)

-you find yourself walking up to strangers who are wearing ig shirts and
tapping them on the shoulder and exclaiming proudly "indigo!!!!!!"

next thread...(geez, we're suddenly overwhelmed with threads!)
one song to hook a non ig fan on, well that's easy. it's gotta be romeo. it's
just _gotta_ be. (btw, the answer to the quiz above.) this is for pure power,
and passion ala amy. then after they pick their jaw up off the floor and ask
for more, you have to introduce them to the classic ig sound with something
like galileo, or virginia woolf, world falls. if that don't get 'em, they're
hopeless, neil said, you'll have to just shoot them. put them out of our
misery. :)

and lastly (for right now at least):

but what if i don't get the disney channel!!!!!!!!!??????????????????????

folkisgruven, (y'all)

lorindigo
(please don't hate me because i'm a yankee who desperately wants to use the
word y'all in everyday conversation!)

start compiling all of everyone's responses.. and i got to thinking...if we
had enought answers someone (i volunteer, but i don't have to be the one)
could make a low budget little publication that we could sent to everyone on
the list...sort of a indicated-the written version...well let this stir in

introduce them with r & j ... even though it's not reall an ig song and only
one ig sings it ... well -- that's my way of getting people to listen to them
and yes it works ... the maybe put on something catchy to keep their
attention - least complicated or something ... then get serious once thier
hooked -- love's recovery or maybe fugitive ...of course the confuse them
with a live version of tmf or chickenman ....

you know you're an ig fan when ... you talk about them at least once a day
for no reason to someone who doesn't care ... you brag about them and talk
about them so much people think they're close pesonal friends or something
... the only cd's (or tapes) in your car are ig (or ig-related stuff) ... you
hold deep conversations with other ig fans about such stuff as amy's hair ...
you can remember exact details of every concert of theirs that you've been to
... scrutenize over bootleg tapes trying to hear exactly what they say during
each song - and if you don't understand you post to the list and ask people
for help ... ok i'm rambling ... yeah i'm hooked ...

peace & ig-obsessions

glad to know that i'm not the only person who has been slowly (but surely)
convinced that a tattoo is necessary to my being able to function as a sane

i don't think you have to split it up between male and female, but i think
you do have to look at the other types of music that thay listen to, and that
might also help you figure out whether they are an amy or emily person.  now
this is not an exact science, but if they are into tori amos, mariah carey,
joni mitchell, etc. then they would probably be an emily person and i would
play them love's recovery or love will come to you.  if they are into melissa
etheridge, ani difranco, or any other rockers, then they would probably be an
amy person and i would play them reunion or pushing the needle too far, or if
you are unsure about what their interests are like, you can always play that
old standard, closer to fine; that seems to attract all types.  this is an
extreme oversimplification, but for this task, i think it is somewhat
appropriate.

hmm ... this is harder than i thought it would be.  i had to pick one of
each, 'cause their styles are so different (at least, i tried) ...
amy song: fugitive (newish) ; kid fears (classic).
emily song: ghost (newish) ; closer to fine (classic)
(you see - you can't pick just one!)

as far as "you know you're a fan when..."  you can't pick just *one*
favorite song 'cause there are two of them!  and i have to agree with the
tattoo people!  i've wanted one for years, and especially since i saw amy's
for the first time in '89, and i'm finally getting up the guts (and the
funds!) to get one - next month!  its not ig related, but i can think of her
as my inspiration. :-)

oh, yes ... i don't want a tattoo because it hurts, i want one because it
says something about me.  if it says to some people "look, she's into pain!"
that's fine with me (i'm not, by the way)  that's not what i thought when i
saw amy's - i immediately asked myself "what is she trying to say?"

and you definately *cannot* avoid pain ... i've spent the last six months
trying to do just that in my 9 1/2 year relationship, and now that i've
admitted to myself (and her) that things aren't the greatest, things are
actually getting better.  go figure - avoid pain, you cause it;  admit pain,
it eases.  *sigh*

enough nigc - let's continue this privately, if at all

bert! ::whap::

why wouldn't the igs be family entertainment? the lyrics are sincere, the
harmony/music enjoyable and enlightening. my oh-so-close- to 5 year old
son adores "joking" and "hammer & a nail", and really thinks galileo is
great too!

if you mean their respective lifestyles may raise eyebrows, look what a
positive role model mick jagger, rod stewart, and the like are. drugs,
womanizing, etc.

if anything, the igs reputation is that of concern and caring for the
environment, the american indian, and the planet itself.

ps.. this isn't a flame, darlin'. just don't be so fast to judge exactly
who's watching the disney channel. homophobia isn't everywhere. :d

when elm comes up, go into options (o key), and change your

then save changes and exit elm.  once you come back in, all should

no, homophobia isn't everywhere, but it is present at disney, inc., according
to ex-vp jeff katzenberg who left disney to form dreamworks, inc. with steven
spielberg and david geffen.  this is not to say that j.k. is gay/bi, he made
no reference to this, but there was mention of homophobia/ultra-conservatism
within the top-level execs at disney, and this was supposedly one of his
reasons for leaving.  i was not making aspersions against the viewers of the
disney channel, but based on what i had heard about the company (that is was
one of the most conservative - coors, inc. being the most) i was surprised
that they would feature two openly gay performers on their cable network.
but hey; i am glad to see that they put it past them, or maybe they are
turning over a new leaf.  who knows?  but at least we have this to look
forward to in october.

thanks for explaining that, bert! i didn't know! geez, there's a very
well-known event in mid december annually at dizzyland here in socal
known as gay night. park closes to all outside folksat 7pm, and admitted
are gays and lesbians only (and our kids) for a great price with the ease
of closeness and showing affection openly amongst 'our own', so to speak.

bert i think you have made a big generalization about the walt disney co.

first - katzenburg didn't "leave" he was politely "let go" - so take his
words as someone who is a wee bit bitter.

second - the comparision to coors is unbelievable.  the walt disney co. may
be on the conservative side but it the way it treats its employee is much
better than most and what other amusement park has gay day?  you don't see
any of the six flags. dollywood, sea world etc.  in fact at most amusement
parks have basically banned gay day - the one that comes to mind is kennywood
in pittsburgh but i have not followed it that closely - so they may have
changed their policy.  in reference to coors - keep in mind that they are the
largest supportor of the "silver bullets" - do you really think that
management at coors thinks the whole team is "straight".  now i am not
defending coors - but think about it.

third - rather than over-analyzing the reasons why they are broadcasting it -
they should be applauded and encouraged to do more of these type of things.
one of the big problems i see is that the gay community has a tendancy to
bash corporate america anytime they try to do something like this.  for some
reason they always think that it isn't enough.  so corporate america feels
that they are damned if they do and damned if they don't.  i suggest that
instead direct that "judgemental" energy to sending them letters, email and
such to let them know we are all out here and appreciate them for making an
effort.

ooooooh! this reminds me. i've got another one! (i know, i've offered more
that my fair share already, but you'll like this one)...

...when you include several quotes, (or possibly even a whole song) from the
girls in the introductory pages of your ph.d. dissertation, and _also_ include
a warm, heartfelt and sincere thank you to amy and emily in the
acknowledgements of said dissertation.

i haven't written it yet, but i definitely  will, and when i do you guys will
be the first to read it. (the quote and the acknowledgement, not the
dissertation. i kinda doubt there are too many of you interested in reading a
100 + page biochemistry thesis.) :)

and as for the tattoo thing:
calm down bert! it's ok. i seriously doubt i'll ever actually go through with
it and get a tattoo. i'm really not into the pain. in fact, that's why i'll
probably never do it. but i'm glad to see i'm not the only one who's at least
thought of the idea. the whole point is to make a profound personal statement
about yourself. that's what amy's is. the whole industry has such a bad rep
because everyone's used to seeing bikers with "harley davidson" or "mom" or
whatever on their arm. ahem. i hardly think so. i've seen some really snazzy,
intelligent tattoos too. so what's the point? oh, i don't know. how about, if
you're considering a tattoo, do it or don't do it for your own reasons. and if
you _do_ do it. i'm curious to know what it looks like. (and how much it hurt.)
:)

and one more thing: i heard (yen, this is your rumor) that disney was having a
free preview during the time of the ig show. is this true? anyone?

yea, been there.  chickened out.  i got to meet a+e after a show last
september in santa fe, nm  during the so tour.  i have always been
interested in amy's tatoo.  i saw them once on david letterman and i
thought i remembered her saying it was a sioux indian cross.  i spent weeks
in the unm library looking for sioux indian crosses and found nothing.
anyways, when i met amy i asked her about her tatoo.  she explained that a
friend of hers had given her a book of symbols and she pieced things
together from that.  i then asked her for her autograph and stuck out my
left arm.  she drew a little cartoon character that looked like a bear or a
dog with claws and signed her name.  i was gonna get it tatooed and then
thought, "do i really want to do such a permanent thing. what if amy ray
robs a bank or kills some people?  and, i don't have buddha's name tatooed
on my body, why amy's?"  so it didn't happen and my excuse was that i left
the next day to follow melissa etheridge through 5 ststes on her tour.
poor excuse, i know.  i have regretted not getting that tatoo ever since.

i just said that i was surprised, based on what i had heard about the
company.  that was all.  no, they are not as conservative as coors., and i do
appreciate the fact that i will have the opportunity to see ig on tv, even if
i have to subscribe to the disney channel for a day or so.  however, we do
have to keep something in the back of our minds asking, "why do companies do
what they do?  who is benefitting and how?"  i know that this is an extremely
cynical way to view things, but corporate america does not have a good enough
track record to take everything they do at face value.  and as far as coors
and the silver bullets go, i have already presented my views about this
issue, and i will not bore anyone again with it, but trust me, coors knows
exactly what they are doing, and it is not promoting the concept of women's
baseball or athleticism.

on a final note, i did see a very interesting nike commercial promoting
women's athletics.  it focused on a lot of little girls talking about
different ways that they would be better off if they would be allowed to play
sports.  it cited things like self-esteem, health(specifically, reducing the
chance of getting breast cancer, which i had never heard, but makes some
sense), and a reduction in the likelihood of getting into a hurtful
relationship, etc..  one thing it did not say, and i did not expect it to
say, because there have probably been no studies done on this subject and
there probably will never be, and there is no proof to make such a
correlation, but i am going to bring it up and see what y'all think.  flame
away if you want, but there should be no reason to, because i am not making a
statement of fact or even a real generalization here, but just bringing up an
idea for discuusion.  this idea is the relationship between athletics and
homosexuality in women.  this is not to say that all woman athletes are
lesbians or that all lesbians are potential athletels.  what i am saying is
that many bi and gay women that i have talked to about this subject, say that
the coming out process, especially the self-realization and actualization
process was made much easier because they had played sports as a child and
teen.  many claim that by breaking the barriers preventing them from playing
sports prepared them for the obstacles that they would face later in life.
also, many said that the team environment was especially helpful during
adolesence, when they were going through a lot of the trials and tribulations
related to this issue.  the team served as a support mechanism where girls
who were going through many of same problems could commisserate and help each
other through this tough time.  i guess that the relationship is not
necessarily causal, but affective, meaning that athrletics does not lead to
homosexuality in women, but maybe it makes life somewhat easier for those
involved.  or whatever, i don't know how or why i got on this subject, and i
am sorry if i offended anyone or made any objectionable generalizations.  i
am just rambling, becasue i am at work and i hate my job, and i just want to
go home and go to sleep.  aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!
i feel better now.  sorry for the incredible waste of bandwith.  if you have
read this far, i have the utmost respect for you, although after reading
this, the feeling may not be mutual.  have a nice day.

peace pops

hmmm...seeing as i live on the road to athens i guess this would be my
responsibility <grin>
okay...in athens get on the atlanta highway ( as in the b-52's "i was
heading down the atlanta highway...." ) going towards highyway 78 (the road
to athens!) go west, obviously on 78 for forever and a day.....when you see
a really big rock called stone mountain, wave 'cause you'll be in my front
yard practically! anyway, follow the signs to atlanta and decatur.....when
the highway ends follow the signs to lawrenceville highway.....to go to
eddie's go to the 3rd traffic light and turn left onto church
street...follow church into the city of decatur.....at the 6th traffic light
turn right on trinity ave....then turn right at the very next traffic
light....eddie's is right there on the right, ya can't miss it! to get to
the point.....after 78 ends stay on l'ville hwy/scott blvd for several
miles...watch out for the city of decatur cops! they're merciless!! when you
get to the intersection of ponce de leon ave (scott changes to ponce) and
moreland/briarcliff road turn left (there's an exxon on one corner and a big
church on the other) onto moreland...the point is located at the 4th traffic
light on the corner of moreland and euclid...try to find a safe place to
park....while in little 5 points also check out the little 5 points pub,
where ig basically played all the time....it's not exactly the same but it
is the same building.... :)

this brings up a very serious question of disease. i've never been to a tattoo
parlor, so i don't know what standard procedure is, but i'm a biochemist, and i
do know a thing or two about aids and hepatitis. if you go to get one, talk to
them about the needle. preferably, you should watch them take it out of a
sterile wrapping. if tattoo parlors don't use sterile needles, they should. or
there should at least be a sterilization procedure used in house involving
clorox, or a commercial disinfectant, or something similar. i'm not an expert
on this, but i'd also be concerned about the inks themselves. person to needle
to ink to new needle to new person may be a valid transmission method. i don't
know because i don't know if a virus could live for any time in the inks. i'm
sorry if i'm scaring anyone. (actually, i'm scaring myself.) but do yourself a
favor and talk to some sort of health expert before you do it. i'm sure it's
safe if it's done properly. just make sure it's done properly. sermon over.
sorry folks, i'll shut up for a while now. :)

oh, don't be silly!!!! *grin* have i ever let that stop me????

and i _have_ seen a few people with ig shirts (besides myself <g>) most
recently i saw a woman wearing the red one with the heron(?) silluette at the
bethlehem music fest. (made me _really_ wish i was back at newport.) anyway, i
didn't go up to her because she was talking to her partner, and they didn't
look like they wanted to be disturbed. oh well. but i have gone up to people
before, and now i've taken to looking for people who look like maybe they have
an ig shirt and wear it occassionally. sometimes you can just tell an ig fan.
they have a certain glow and look of intelligence. *grin*

oh, and sunny (wasn't it you who got your arm signed?) did you at least take a

this is my first post.  i know i'm an indigo girls fan because they are

i finally had to jump into this 'which song' thread...
the song that someone who has never heard any ig would have to be:
"cold as ice" from that first ep thing..still not certain which
indigo wrote it, but it's the first one i heard and it's got a certain pop
perfection to it that just grabs at you...kind of like "tried to be true"
or:     a live version of "land of canaan" for the energy factor...

i think josh is right though...ctf will probably win out over the rest....

after my post about sanitary conditions at tattoo parlors, i received this,
and i thought y'all might be comforted in knowing the following. these sound
to me like adequate safety measures, so provided measures like these are
taken, you should be able to put your mind at ease. :)
______________________________________________________________________________

hi,
i subscribe to the list and post once in a blue moon, and saw the
thread about tatooing.  i just got a tatoo in may and it wasn't all that bad
1) pain- i found that it was more like an annoying pain than a painful
pain, (i hope you understand) and i was getting it on the inside of my
ankle the tatooist named "miss kitty" was leaning on my leg to stabilize
her hand and after the first 5 minutes my leg pretty much went numb.

the place was really good about sterilization.  before she began she
showed me the sterilized package and the date on it and how long after
that date that it was still good for.  then the ink that she used came
out of bottles on a shelf on the wall and she put the colors she would
need in these little red cups (really little).  then she sterilized her
hands and put on gloves.  there was even a little bag on the part of the
needle with the motor, to protect it from the possibility of splashing
blood i guess.  after it was all over ( a matter of 30 min) she made me
watch her burn the needle off of whatever that thing is called and put
in one of those contaminated waste thingys and she threw the little red
caps with the leftover ink in there too.  oh yeah, it bled a lot for the
first 3 hours or so.  i told you about the paper they gave me about how
to care for it, and it's doing well so far as i can tell. hmmm a little
rhyme, didn't mean to do that.  i'm going to get another as soon as i
save up the money.  this one is bigger than a silver dollar and cost me
$70, which isn't bad.  price goes up with colors needed and size.

sorry about the nigc but lorinda brings up a good point about making sure
you are going to a reputable tattoo artist.  as one who does aids education
with teens who love home made tat guns, i asked those in the know about
this issue. most shops and all good shops use new needles and will open the
needle in front of you if ask.  there has been no evidence that there is
transmission concerns in the ink, it does not come in contact with bodily
fluids (again unless you use a homemade gun and do the dip method, but then
you probably do not care much about your health in the first place)

you know you're an ig fan when,

instead of using the words left and right, you give directions by
saying amy and emily. (as you are facing the stage amy is left and
emily is right) ie: go down the street, take an emily and then two
quick amys.

you call your redheaded friend emily even though her name is laura.

even though you have all their cds you always check the indigo girl
section in the record store first, just cuz'.

you play ctf so loud and with so much energy at campfire that you get
kicked out of a campground.

your subscription  to the indigo-girls  list (indigo girls  mailing list)
has been accepted.

please save this message for future  reference, especially if you are not
familiar with listserv.  this might look like a waste  of disk space now,
but in  6 months  you will be  glad you saved  this information  when you
realize that  you cannot remember what  are the lists you  are subscribed
to, or  what is the command  to leave the  list to avoid filling  up your
mailbox while you are on vacations. in fact, you should create a new mail
folder for subscription confirmation messages  like this one, and for the
"welcome  messages"  from the  list  owners  that you  will  occasionally
receive after subscribing to a new list.

to send  a message to  all the people  currently subscribed to  the list,
just send mail to indigo-girls@netspace.org. this is called "sending mail
to the  list", because  you send  mail to a  single address  and listserv
makes  copies  for all  the  people  who  have subscribed.  this  address
(indigo-girls@netspace.org) is  also called the "list  address". you must
never try to send any command to that address, as it would be distributed
to all the people  who have subscribed. all commands must  be sent to the
"listserv  address",  listserv@netspace.org.  it  is  very  important  to
understand  the difference  between the  two, but  fortunately it  is not
complicated. the  listserv address  is like  a fax  number, and  the list
address is like a normal phone line.  if you make your fax call someone's
regular phone number by mistake, it  will be an unpleasant experience for
him  but you  will probably  be  excused the  first  time. if  you do  it
regularly,  however, he  will probably  get upset  and send  you a  nasty
complaint. it  is the same with  mailing lists, with the  difference that
you are calling  hundreds or thousands of  people at the same  time, so a
lot more people get annoyed if you use the wrong number.

you may  leave the list at  any time by sending  a "signoff indigo-girls"
command to listserv@netspace.org. you can also tell listserv how you want
it to confirm the receipt of messages you send to the list. if you do not
trust the  system, send a  "set indigo-girls repro" command  and listserv
will send you a  copy of your own messages, so that you  can see that the
message was distributed and did not get damaged on the way. after a while
you  may find  that this  is getting  annoying, especially  if your  mail
program does not  tell you that the  message is from you  when it informs
you  that new  mail has  arrived from  indigo-girls. if  you send  a "set
indigo-girls  ack  norepro"  command,  listserv will  mail  you  a  short
acknowledgement  instead,  which  will  look different  in  your  mailbox
directory. with most mail programs you will know immediately that this is
an  acknowledgement  you  can  read  later. finally,  you  can  turn  off
acknowledgements completely with "set indigo-girls noack norepro".

following  instructions from  the list  owner, your  subscription options
have been  set to "repro"  rather than  the usual listserv  defaults. for
more information about subscription  options, send a "query indigo-girls"
command to listserv@netspace.org.

contributions sent to this list are automatically archived. you can get a
list of  the available archive  files by sending an  "index indigo-girls"
command to listserv@netspace.org.  you can then order these  files with a
"get indigo-girls  logxxxx" command, or using  listserv's database search
facilities. send an  "info database" command for more  information on the
latter.

please note that  it is presently possible for anybody  to determine that
you are signed  up to the list  through the use of  the "review" command,
which returns the e-mail address and  name of all the subscribers. if you
do  not want  your name  to be  visible, just  issue a  "set indigo-girls
conceal" command.

more  information on  listserv  commands  can be  found  in the  listserv
reference  card, which  you can  retrieve  by sending  an "info  refcard"
command to listserv@netspace.org.

...just signed on to the list and i am posting for the

>you have a friend who has never heard of the indigo girls.  you can play
>him/her only one ig song in your attempt to convert him/her to an ig
>fan.  you must convert this poor soul!  if you don't do it, no one will!
>what song do you play?

i can only remember the song that hooked me. it was closer to fine (and i'm
not afraid to admit it!). within a couple months of hearing that song
(actually, seeing the video) i had four different ig cds that continually
played on my system. some have been voting for kid fears or ghost
among others. these songs are too overwhelming for someone's first
listen. closer to fine is the easiest way to hook anyone. after they
hear that, play them any other ig song and they're a guaranteed junkie
for life!

>best concert was detroit when elvis appeared on stage (and only because of
>that...it wasn't memorable any other way)

this happened to be one of the only two times i have had the
absolute pleasure to see ig perform. it was the palace of auburn
hills, home court to the detroit pistons. a&e both kept
commenting on what a big a place it is. they seemed surprised,
amused and overwhelmed by it's size. the palace has never sounded
so good as it did that night. since the beginning, it's always
been their pure sincerity that has attracted me. their ability
to relay such conviction through their art. rare is the artist
who can weld such compassion into every song they perform.

-you know you're an ig fan when the statement "i've never heard of them"
causes your ears to go deaf to all the words that follow.

i can only access the net through email. if anyone out there has any
uuencoded files (.gif, .jpg, .fli, anything!) related to the indigo girls
they would be willing to share, please! please! find it in your heart to
send them this way!!

is it just me or are people especially hateful for some reason when they
don their ig shirts? every person i've ever talked to wearing an ig shirt
not at a concert has really been annoyed at me (gasp, could it be me?)
i'll be like "hey indigo girls, my favorite group, cool..." and i get
something like a "uh, yeah, whatever" and a "what a freak" look...

just something i noticed.

no! can you believe how stupid i am.  i am kicking myself pretty much
constantly these days.  you know what was cool though...i didn't even think
of taking a camera backstage with me when i got to meet a+e, but i still
got a picture.  one of my friends snuck backstage also and was chatting
with a couple of girls we didn't know who were snapping pictures like
crazy.  they ended up exchanging addresses and later when they got their
pictures developed they sent her copies of the ones she was in. one of
those pictures caught amy right in the middle of  signing my arm, in the
background of the picture. and if half of my friends face wasn't in the
foreground of the picture i probably wouldn't have gotten a copy of it.
wierd.

you know you're an ig fan when....

...when you're on your way from albuquerque to denver for an indigo
girls concert and you roll and total your car halfway there, get out of the
hospital and hitch hike 6 hours to denver, get there just in time for the
concert, and think the whole rotten adventure was worth it!

you're sitting at work one day (in indianapolis) reading the village voice
and you see the indigo girls are playing a gig in central park in new york
city. you've only recently discovered them, but the image of the girls
giving a concert in your favorite city without you there is too much to
bear.  you don't even *think* about the rent when you pick up the phone
and order the plane ticket....

you're attending a concert in bloomington with two friends and you have
seats in row 20 in the middle.  you bump into a guy in front of the venue
selling *one* third row center seat.  you snatch up the ticket, tell your
friends how sorry you are, then give your old ticket to a very young girl
standing out front who is a big fan but doesn't have enough money to see
the show.  you feel exhilirated by both things, but your friends are not
amused by the seating arrangements as *you* were the reason they even
came to the show in the first place....

you're at an ig concert in your own hometown with your new girlfriend.
all you can do is give her an apologetic little look when she asks
(kiddingly, of course) who i would choose if i could....her or amy? <g>
