this is a hilarious thread. here's my 2 cents. you know you're an ig fan
when...

....you compile an ig "greatest hits" tape for your daily 30 minute power walk
and end up using
three 90-minute tapes (i.e. enough for a power marathon!)

...(this one is for borderline obsessive compulsives like me)...you have
scrupulously  arranged
your cd collection alphabetically by artist and find the shelf ends in the
"i's" so that half of the
ig cds are on one shelf and the other half are one shelf below. now you can't
sleep at night. so
you take the entire ig collection and put them before abba (it was a gift,
okay!!). the same
thing happens to your rolling stones collection, but you don't seem to care
about this.

this is definitely nigc, but i could resist telling this great story about a
friend of mine
who defended her tattoo. she was seated alone in a cafe, daisy tattoo prominent
on her
"cappuccino arm" when a man sitting next to her interrupted her thoughts. he
had a huge
pot belly, t-shirt not quite covering his girth, and thin wispy hair parted at
his ear lobe to
cover his bald spot. he may have belched. you get the picture. yecch!!! he told
her the
tattoo was ugly and, anyway, he couldn't understand why a young woman would
ever
ruin her body on purpose. she pointed her finger at his ample waist line and
said, simply,
"so why'd you ruin yours?" brava!

subject:      auction items w/ minimum bids

hi folks,

sorry to keep y'all waiting so long.  probably right about the time most of
you will be reading this, i'll be in the middle of taking my master's exams,
and i knew i wouldn't have had time to study for them and organize an
auction.  so thanks for your patience...

well, here it is.  bidding starts now.  minimum bids are listed.  duplicate
high bids will go to the first bidder.  auction ends in twelve days
(september 12, 1995) at midnight.  i will post updates to the mailing list
(@netspace.org) every three days.  if you'd like more frequent
updates (or if you're not on the netspace mailing list) please send me your
e-mail address and i'll put you on a separate mailing list for daily
updates.

please note that i've added a couple of items since my last post (e.g.
another shades (purple cover) and michelle malone promo cd).

fourth class postage is included.  if you want it shipped priority,
that'll be extra...

if you have any questions, just ask.  thank you!

btw, you know you're an ig fan when you spend the last few hours of
studying for your master's exams posting an auction notice to the ig
mailing list 'cause you just can't possibly wait one more second to
get this thing started.  :)  wish me luck?

oh, and one more thing (sorry), um, i realize some of you will be out of
town over the labor day weekend and may not be able to access the list.
don't fret!  there'll be plenty of time after the weekend to bid...  :)

hi folks,

the screen saver is cool!  well, of course, you all knew that,
but anyways... :)

it's got about a 30sec clip from the tmf video with a video
player and apparently a screensaver (i need to restart windows
to see the screen saver i think and i'd lose my net connection
if i did that... :) ).  it's also got a couple of games which,
as far as i can tell, are pretty darn stupid.  teehee.

sounds great, looks great... and here's hoping i can figure out
how to get the screensaver to replace my current warp-speed
star field thingy (you know the one... :) )

i wore an old ig shirt on my trip from connecticut to florida a couple
weeks ago.  i have to admit that i was a little thrown off gaurd when the
woman i paid for the gas in south carolina (i think), started telling me
how much she liked this song of their's that she had once heard.  i
usually don't have people saying anything about my shirt, but this was
quite pleasant.  i told her that the song she was thinking about was
"galileo" and we both agreed that they are very talented musicians.  i
think i will wear my shirt more often now.  how often do you find a
friendly gas station attendant that you enjoy conversing with.

it just goes to show ya, never judge a book by its cover, you may miss
out on a best seller.

btw, my shirt is starting to fall apart, but i couldn't afford a new one
at the so tour.  where can i get one?

thanks,  boots

just for the record, i'd agree with "closer to fine" as probably the best

well, you only have to wait about 5 or 6 months, so that if (very
rare) you get infected with hiv the incubation period has expired and
there should be enough hiv antibodies to show up on the standard tests

i'm not an expert on hepetitis, but i am a red cross certifried
hiv/aids instructor, and an educator for the madison aids support
network, but hiv should not be transmitted in the inks, and if the
parlor doesn't use sterile needles each time, consider finding a new
parlor.  if the parlor owner is a friend, or someone you trust urge he
or she to consider using sterile needles.  if sterile needles are not
available, insist upon being present while the needles are cleaned
with bleach and water.  the needles should be flushed 3 times with
water, three times with bleach and three times again with water. also
remember to check the outside of the needle for any rust (wouldn't

happend...

hiv cannot live in the inks because hiv only lives in fluids that
contain reproductive cells (blood, semen, vaginal secretions, and
(rarely) breast milk)..

sorry to lecture, but i know people who are dying or have died of
aids, and i really don't like seeing people put themselves at risk for
infection.

subject:      spirit of '73

well, haven't heard mention of it's release on the list, but just thought i'd
tell ya, it's out.

and what a record it is!!!!!
all those songs from your childhood (i was 3 in 73) come back in full force.
kinda like the carpenter's tribute cd.

anyway, it won't take long is amazing. on first listen, i was a little
wierded out by the penny wistle in the beginning, but about 1 minute into the
song, when the fleetwood macy penny wistle blends into the backround, this
song explodes.emily sounds great, and amy (as amy always does) continues to
amaze me with her voice. this is a very important song for the cd and the
girls in particular. very powerful and moving. go now and buy the spirit of
'73.

rosanne cash does a mean cover of joni mitchel's river (i was a little
disappointed by sarah mclahlen's cover of blue).

that's it--john

how, then, do you explain miramax, the ultra-trashy film company that
disney owns, and which distributed priest among other very controversial
titles? how do you explain that disney is on the sh*t list of most every
far right organization in the country? to be sure, they may have
conservative executives at the top, but they sure aren't letting it drive
their programming decisions. i'd guess you'd be hard-pressed to find more
than a handful of fortune 500 companies in the country that *don't* have
ultra-conservatives in their upper ranks.

subject:      indigo girls sony screensaver

i probably missed this being mentioned, but browsing sony's rather uninspiring
www site, i came across these so-called "music screeners", which seem to be
a way of extracting $12.98 from music fans for something that should probably
be free (or at least charge $12.98 for the engine and give away the video/
sound clips for free).

"music screeners" are basically screensavers (with a couple of "screensaver
games" built in) for pcs. they are launched on 5th september (there's a free
one of michael jackson's "black or white" you can download) and there's two
of interest to folks on this list:

shawn colvin            round of blues                  css 61102
indigo girls            touch me fall                   ess 61115

the full list of artists is at this page:

http://www.sony.com/music/screeners/artists.htm

and the home page of "music screeners" is at:

http://www.sony.com/music/screeners/

what's disappointing is that sony don't seem to want to sell the screensavers
via their web site :-( they are "in music and computer stores everywhere"
apparently, but does "everywhere" include outside the us ? hmmm...i doubt it.

no, i don't work for sony, before you ask !

oh, if someone does pick up the shawn colvin or ig "music screener", can they
please post a review to the list ?

subject:      emily married with children?

hi all,

first let me say that i *do* respect amy and emily's privacy.  i don't
not just sit around trying to delve into there personal business,
but...... when i hear something this big..... well i am a very curious
person and so i have to ask if it is true or not.

i was talking with a women i met at a party yesterday when the subject
of ig came up. she told me she was at the university of new hampshire
indigo girls show last year. (soon after so was released) she also told
me that emily came out on stage holding a dark haired baby, followed by
a dark haired man,  and that emily introduced him as her *husband*,
and that this was her child.

she also told me that no one in the audience seemed shocked or
surprised and they all clapped for her.

this woman *swears* she is not pulling my let and that this *really*
happened.

if any of you have *any* information on this i would really appreciate
you posting it or sending me an e-mail.

i swear i will drop this subject and not go on and on about personal ig
issues.

apparently the disney channel will be doing an ig's concert special in
october, right??

my guess is that this will be the london show 'cause it's recent, and it'll
prolly be a more complete version...longer if you will...

so i would say wait...and as i've said before, my copy's not the best to go

rumor control! rumor control! i was at this show and here is my educated
guess as to what this woman may have been referring to.

i've worked for the promoter who brought the show in and got to chat with him
alongside the stage before the girls came out. among other things, he
mentioned having family there - introduced me to his son - and i thought he
said something about having a little niece backstage.  from what i recall
(the place went crazy when the lights went down), david carried this little
girl out on stage and she was supposed to say "indigo girls!" but i don't
remember it coming out very clearly.  my husband said, "what was that?" and i
told him it looked like maybe david was trying to get his niece to do the
intro, but by then they were gone and the girls were on stage.  i don't
recall that emily was carrying the baby but i could be wrong - we were in the
12th row with lots of tall people in front of us. maybe she said something
jokingly?

anybody else remember this scenario (piep, were you there?)?  there must be a
key to this mystery ... i certainly don't think emily has been hiding
motherhood from the world :-).

heidi (who just finished writing an article on depression with the uplifting
help of amy & emily.  they always come through for me when i need help
building my conclusion.  just think how well i could have done in college if
the girls had been around then - i had to make do with carly simon and
jackson browne, plus pink floyd reverberating though the walls from the
acid-heads next door.  no wonder i never got that phd ... ;-).)

and claimed to be married and had a baby.  not true!!!  she is
involved in a long term lesbian relationship and in no interviews did
she ever mention being a wife or a mother.  if you have a baby, you
talk about the child everywhere because you feel a certain pride
being a parent that is matched by nothing else.

there is a point, there are a lot of avid indigo girls fans out there!!  the
only difference is that now the ig are not touring and have not produced a

happen.  i hesitate to destroy something that has already been established,

well, i thought the same.. but then i tried to think of some other way
to identify ourselves... we're not alt.music.indigo-girls .. we could
put net.indigo-girls (with or without the dash) .. but i dunno.  i am,

i like the idea of the e-mail address on the t-shirts, even if it
becomes dated.  i could see myself a few years from now with 5 or 6
different ig list t-shirts, all with a different address. we could

this cover is awesome...better in concert than on the cd, but the version on
the cd is well worth having.  when they performed it at newport, the song
was much more rockin' than the version on the cd, and ferron sang with them on
it so it was very cool in that sense as well.  however, the version on the
cd has a lot to be said for it.  sheila doyle (bfe) adds some truly remarkable
violin parts to the song, michael lorant (bfe) sings backup vocals on the track,
and amy does a very cute (perhaps unconscious) ferron impersonation at
various points in the vocals. dede vogt plays and sings on the track as
well.

i guess this is a response to the what song would you play for a first time ig
listener but there is a story that goes with it.  this is my first post so i'm
sorry if i am wordy.  here it goes.
i work at a family camp during the summers in california.  the first night the
families are there we have a campfire.  of course at the campfire we do the
traditional "i love the mountains" thing but after the campfire all the
counselors stay and sing.  i play guitar, so i know many ig songs and we sing
ctf, secure yourself, least complicated, etc...   one night a few of the
families stayed to listen to us.  they all wanted to know who sang closer to
fine and they all wanted recordings of it.  so after camp was over i went and
visited a few families from camp  and low and behold what did they add to their
cd collections?  indigo girls!!!  this made me feel good!  i just love to
spread their music around!
oh yeah,  the person who posted about changing his fingering for the g chord,
i'm with you.
thanks for listening!  cathy

i couldn't have said it better - exactly what i was thinking (except
more coherent.

any way, jon, it's a great idea and i think just the way you describe
it sounds perfect.  i would be careful with the picture idea though,
less is more is often the case with t-shirt designs :)

it's great to start "seeing" some of the folks who were gone for

i'm so thrilled about the disney thing - hope we get more
details soon.  i would think they would start advertising more

if anyone goes to one of these shows and makes a tape, i would love
to trade.  i understand that wendy does not mind taping of her shows.
i would really like to get some more of wendys music.  also if anyone
has older wendy bucklew shows, i would love to get a copy. (opening for
ig?  anyone?)

yes!  go see her.  she puts on a great show.  she is very friendly too.

if any of you can help me out in locating some wb boots, i would
really appreciate it!

subject:      1200 curfews...

a friend happened upon the record-store sheet today for "1200 curfews,"
the soon-to-be-released (10 october, i think) double live cd from indigo
girls. thought i'd pass along some of the highlights...

tracks recorded during the "swamp ophelia" and "honor the earth" tours as
well as choice tracks from earlier shows. over 130 minutes of music.

tracks: closer to fine, land of canaan, joking, pushing the needle too
far, virginia woolf, strange fire, ghost, mystery, this train (revised),
love's recovery, least complicated, thin line (gerard mchugh), galileo,
i don't wanna know, language or the kiss, midnight train to georgia,
dead man's hill, center stage, jonas and ezekial, world falls, down by
the river (neil young), tangled up in blue (bob dylan), river (joni
mitchell), bury my heart at wounded knee (buffy saint marie).

the disney special, taped in london, will be shown on 15 october and three
more times before christmas 1995.

"extensive fan-club advance marketing -- this is the engine that drove
75,000 people into the stores the first week of their last record's
release! direct mailings, on-line chats and web site info, classified ads
in targeted publications and more will be used to mobilize their devoted
base."

200,000 digipaks as well as jewel boxes used in the release.

(i've also heard "tangled up in blue" and "thin line" from it - they're
very nice, and very well done, though "thin line" doesn't sound like
there's any crowd noise about...)

---------

also: the "watershed" video compilation will be released at the same time.
it will contain the following videos: closer to fine, hammer and a nail,
galileo, joking, touch me fall, least complicated, and power of two. also
will include "moments from..." reunion, chickenman, get together,
finlandia, southland in the springtime, and more, including early concert
footage, tv appearances, and behind-the-scenes footage from life on the
road. one hour in length.

hey y'all...

just a few things...

1.  1200 curfews...re: steve's comment about "thinline" and lack of crowd
noise....could it be the version from "live @ wrek?"  i can't remember
the last time i saw that tune on a set list.  in fact the last time i
heard it was when gerard did it opening for the ig at the beacon theatre
in nyc during the rop tour...

2.  i was at the show in london that was videoed.  in fact, i was right
behind the control boards and tv monitors, and it was a pretty good
night.  the night before however, was blinding. the touch me fall into
cortez the killer and back to touch me fall just smoked.
the night they taped, the ig's muffed a few
songs during the show and asked the crowd to stick around while they
retaped.  to say thanks, they did an impromptu strange fire and forgot
the words...:)

3.  any times for the wendy bucklew shows?  my work has taken me to
lynchburg, va, and i would love an excuse to leave town for a night and
drive up to roanoke....

it's good to be back and to see some old faces...hello to former
list miester spencer, sylvia, i-girl, and ron mcbay if you're all still
around...

peace,
bill

i love the idea of a t-shirt...  i just have one suggestion:

a common theme with t-shirts is to put a small design on the front
left breast, and then a large design on the back.  my hair goes down
to my butt, though, any any back designs are generally obscured.

please put enough on the front that the shirt is still cool for us
long-hairs! :)

incidentally, the way the neil young list did the t-shirt was to have
anyone who wanted to submit design ideas.  than the list voted on the
ideas to narrow them down to 3, then again to pick the favorite.  it
works well.. :)

woaaaah!  response to the t-shirt idea has been enormous!  excellent.
i've got one thing for people to vote on.. the color..  i was thinking
black, but thats just my personal preference :)  (remember the idea
for this came from an alt.goth t-shirt :)

yep - i'm still on this thread ....

well you know you're an ig fan when ... you see a contest in a local
newspaper to "name this racehorse and win xxxx dollars ..." and you don't do
it for the money necessarily, but for the fact that the name needs to be 18
letters or less and you can't resist sending in the answer of least
complicated ....

c'mon -- i really did ...
