subject:      rock for aids t-shirts - **last call**

hi everyone,

as long as people are asking about t-shirts again, i'm going to go ahead
and make a *final* offer of rock for aids t-shirts.  these are *not* the
shirts that have been discussed in the last few posts, which are the
listserv t-shirts designed and distributed by jon miner.  these are the
shirts that were sold at the april 29th benefit show at the roxy in
atlanta, featuring a&e as emcees and performers, along with viva
la diva, mary fortune express, rock-a-teens, smoke, kristen hall & cooper
tisdale, and gracie moon.  they're $10 each (100% tax-deductible too!).

front: "the billings house" written in black with a red ribbon and
the words "faith hope love" underneath.

back: "rock for aids: a benefit for the creation of the billings house
(with red ribbon) a charitable aids hospice for all people with aids."
"featuring:
rock-a-teens
viva la diva
mary fortune express
smoke
gracie moon
kristen hall - cooper tisdale
the indigo girls"

along the right side there's a cool drawing of an acoustic guitar.  :)

all of the money for these shirts goes directly to the billings house, a
non-profit aids hospice organization here in atlanta which will provide
care for pwas without any private health insurance.

there are only a few left: all size large, no xls -- sorry!.

please note: there are a few people who have reserved shirts but who have
not sent me their money.  if this applies to you, please let me know what
your plans are.  if you don't think you can get the $$$ to me within,
say, two weeks, i'd appreciate it if you could let me know so i can give
your shirts to others who are also interested.

please e-mail me if you're interested in buying one, and i'll give you the
details about where to send your check...

thanks, folks...

:)

i'm am very pleased to announce that we have just completed an overhaul of
the interface to the lifeblood web site.  in addition to adding new lyrics
and articles, all the files on the site are now available in html and text
format, i think you will find the site much easier to use.   links to sites
for artists that have worked with amy and emily are now available as well.

in case you are not familiar with the site
(http://www.hidwater.com/lifeblood), it is an web archive devoted to the
indigo girls that contains lyrics, articles, and setlists.  it exists for no
other reason than to pass along information to ig fans.  i welcome your
comments, suggestions and any material that you may wish to add to the site.

credit for the new look goes to julie meloni, who designed it and devoted a
heck of a lot of time to redoing the files.  if you are looking for some
more great music sites, check out the main hidden water page at
http://www.hidwater.com.

have a great  thanksgiving -

yes! near the end of the 'rites of passage' tour, after thanksgiving and
before christmas of 1992, siouxsie sioux and budgie accompanied ig on
several shows. i saw 'em in cleveland at the wonderful palace theatre
downtown. ferron opened. i remember em performed one song with ferron

i had always thought she was blond too, but as we were playing pool at
eddie's on sunday, i was struck by how red/orange her hair really is.

*grin*

speaking of eddie's, the benefit for the ga children's center was
amazing. each performer played for about 30 minutes (though shawn and
matthew played together for an hour).

some news bits y'all might be interested in:

kristen hall started recording her new album last week. she played two
new songs that will likely be on it. i didn't know what to expect from
her, given her reputed temper tantrums, but she was very engaging and
smiled a lot. i enjoyed her performance tremendously.

michelle malone will have a new one out in the spring. she's signed with
a new label (can't for the life of me remember which, it's a spin-off of
one of the larger labels). her self-bootlegged cassettes are selling like
hotcakes.

jeff's last dance, vol. ii  (mullins and kahler) will be released
mid-december.

that's all i can remember right now. did i mention that i want to move to
atlanta?

funny you should ask, actually... recently i've been struck by how

hi lauree.  i like the spelling of your name.  anyway, i wanted to comment on
your remarks about amy being a street preacher or old testament prophet.  i
think that some ig lyrics have some kind of basis in the bible.  i am bothered
by that, though.  mainly because i find it to be a cliche (and cliches to me
are like fingernails on a blackboard) and also because the bible is so
male-based, male-defined, male everything that it irks my feminist
sensibilities to hear them do that.  i don't think i have ever heard a or e
talk about feminism or call themselves feminists, but as a feminist i relate to
their music because to me it speaks of being strong, courageous, doing what you
want, etc., i.e., lots of the feminist principles i believe in.  so when i hear
them fall back on the old patriarchy, i get disappointed.  i think they are so
creative and could find metaphors and sources of inspiration in other places.
what do you and other list members think?  i'd love to know.  -dory (fastening
up my earthly burdens, i have just begun - [sorry a&e for mangling your
lyrics])

subject:      dory's bible bit

dory,
i agree with you; some of ig's lyrics are unquestionably biblically
inspired.  while the patriarchal bent of the bible may and should be
challenged, one should not neglect the imponderable _value_ of the bible
merely because of a desire or need to be politically correct.  first, it is
the closest thing westerners have to a universal piece of literature.
second, despite many people's negative reactions to judeo-christianity,
biblical images are quite often evocative of incredibly deep emotions, be
they feelings of aversion, devotion, love, or of hatred.
also, while biblical references are frequently cliche, i would question
your saying ig's uses of them are.  amy and emily are, as you pointed out,
two amazing women.  i find their courage to incorporate a traditionally
male work into their songs laudable.  amy and emily's ability to challenge
ideas which have been accepted for thousands of years makes them anything
but weak or trite.    although i have heard criticisms of indigo girls,
their music's originality and strength of character is rarely questioned.
hope this makes some sense--
have a great thanksgiving, all!!!
smiles,
mary-jane

well, you're right, the bible is rather male-based.  however, there
are many women of the bible who had important, if under-reported
roles.  for instance, the story of ruth is often used in marrage and
friendship-type things.  lydia was one of the first women mentioned
in the new testament as one of paul's converts.  her influence in the
community and work in the church helped to spread and maintain the
early christian church.  although women were down-played in the bible
because of society, they were still important throughout history in
preserving the christian tradition.  many protestant movements were
led by women.  nunneries have been known as safe havens and nuns have
worked with the poor and opressed for liberation.  to get back to the
bible, it was a samaritan (heathen) woman that jesus first proclaimed
his divinity to.  not only did he talk to women, but jesus treated
them as equals.  paul wrote that we are neither male nor female in
the body of christ.  even if that has not been the way history has
turned out to be, it was the original intention.  sorry to go off
like that, but i've been working on a big project for my faith and
christian herritage class and this was a part of it.

anna, thanks for responding so quickly.  i think your effort at defending the
bible is commendable and i think you should get an "a" on your paper, but i
still think it's a patriarchal piece of s**t that basically tells women that
they are subservient to men and that if they don't like it or tow the line well
then they are gonna go to hell or are sinners or some other bull.  kinda like
the patriarchy tells us today that if we are not "good little girls" that we
won't get a man, etc. - dory (patriarchy defined: "my place is of the sun and

i do still have shirts left for people wishing to purchase them.  all
remaining are large x-large and xx-large....

ok, i've got things figured out.  and i'll break down the cost of the
shirt and all, plus i'll include the description again.

the cost per shirt (unprinted) for l-xl 5.50 a shirt.  the cost for
xxl is $7.00 a shirt.  why the price diff? i dunno.

the cost for the priniting is $6.00 a shirt; therefore, the cost for
printed shirt l-xl is $11.50, the cost per shirt for xxl is $13.00 ..
anyone who has already sent their check will be refunded with their
shirt.  i am keeping careful track of this via an excel spreadsheet,
because there are a lot of orders.

they are being printed on the highest quality shirts that my printer
has available in natural cotton.

the costs for shipping are as follows:

usa - $3.00 per shirt
canada/mexico - $7.00 per shirt
england/australia - $12.00 per shirt

for international orders, please be sure to mail either us dollars
cash or to have your bank issue a money order in us dollars for the
correct amount.

all shirts will be shipped via first-class us mail.  if you wish to
have fed-ex or another carrier, please contact them for instructions
and prices and mail them to me.  please remember to multiply the
shipping cost by the number of shirts, as the shipping will be paid to
the post office, so if you want to send a mailing label with the
correct amount stamped on it, please, feel free.

please mail the money to:

i'm not sure how many of y'all are even interested in r.e.m.,
but this struck me as *funny*.

first off, let me just say that the show was *incredible*.
nightswimming!  find the river!  excuse me while i drool at the memory. ;)

anyway.  during man on the moon, while the band was jamming away, an
elvis impersonator came out.  {i don't think that he's really elvis,
since i would assume that elvis would have grey hair by now. ;) }  he and
michael stipe danced for a bit, and then elvis left.

now, where's the igc, you ask?  well . . . those of you who were at the
ig show this past april? {or was it march? i have a bad memory atm} in
michigan at the palace at auburn hills should remember elvis on stage.

hmm.  maybe elvis impersonators are following me?  the last two concerts
i go to, and there he is.  ;)

now then.  this letter makes no sense, but i still can't quite hear right
from the concert, and i'm much too happy to make sense anyway. ;)

hi!
i'm relatively new to the list, and thus feel like i have little
to offer, but when i saw questions about the jazz fest, i felt it
appropriate to chime in as a native new orleanian.
the new orleans jazz and heritage festival is held every year,
the last weekend in april and the first weekend in may.  the
entertainment runs from thursday through sunday for those two weekends.
it is truly the most amazing musical and cultural experience--if you've
never been.  i have seen the indigo girls play at the jazz fest twice in
the past four years.  as the dates approach, there will be schedules of
who is playing when, but the whole experience is amazing and i highly
recommend it.
the jazz fest is held outdoors in the inside of the racetrack in
new orleans.  it's really hot and usually rainy, which never stops the
performers or the crowds!  there's tons of good food, crafts, and musical
performers ranging from rock to gospel, jazz, blues, and children's
tents.  it is mass chaos, but truly the best time to visit new orleans.
mardi gras is overrated--the jazz fest is where it's at!!
i hope this has helped explain a bit for those of you who are
interested.  if you have any more questions, feel free to ask away!

my comment had nothing to do with the biblical content of their lyrics and

the apocalyptic quality of some of the lyrics...

two things,
first, i got my t-shirt from jon miner yesterday, and i have to say i
absolutely love it. for those of you unaware of what i'm talking about, drop a
line to jon, (he just posted today, so there's his address) and ask him. the
shirt is great. actually, i'm wearing it right now, though no one would know
cuz i have a sweatshirt over it cuz it's cold! anyhoo, it'd be cool if lotsa
people got them, cuz then we'd all have a way to recognize each other at ig
gatherings. it's kinda like a list "uniform" :)

the other thing is the ctf discussion. just thought i'd throw in my two cents:
(btw, for those of you who didn't realize this, bert had to sign off the list
for a while. believe me, if he was online today we'd hear his opinion on this
subject! hopefully he'll be back soon and we'll all hear his diatribe on ctf.)
back in the ol' days ('89 or so) when indigo girls came out, they opened every
show with ctf (because it was their "big hit.") tis true, they frequently
closed with american tune. i heard them do that once. now, the always close
with ctf (because it was their "big hit.") and they vary the opener. (so many
songs, so little...well, whatever.) it's been a looooong time since they
closed with something other than ctf.

when i saw them in duluth, mn during the honor the earth tour, they ended
with ctf.  however my friends who went to the concert in anchorage, ak
said they ended with finlandia.

a week or so ago someone asked if the liner notes in 12c were correct for
mystery, i was wondering if anyone had ever found out.  i think i agree
though that it wasn't the concert in anchorage because my friends said
they don't remember the part about the eight-year-old girl.

yes, the song is on deadicated.  it's a cd of various artists that did
covers of the grateful dead for a rain forest benefit (i think).  imho,
this is the best cover version of ujb i've ever heard and is one of, if
not the, best cuts on the disc.  and, as many people on this list know,
they opened for the grateful dead on 8-21-93 and 8-22-93 in eugene or.
also imho, this was the best opener i ever saw for the boys.  it was
pure heaven. . .

peace to you all.

hi cathrine and everyone,

the name of the recording is deadicated.  it is a grateful dead tribute to
rase proceeds for the rainforest action network and cultural survival.
all the songs are grateful dead songs, but performed by other artists.

the indigo girls did an excellent version of "uncle john's band".  i might
also mention that suzanne vega did a wonderful "china doll" and
"cassidy".  other notable mentions were los lobos' "bertha", bruce
hornsby's "jack straw", and elvis costello's "ship of fools".

it is a really fun cd and it is for a good cause.

the name of the album is "deadicated" and was released about 4 years
ago.  now the question is, is it still in print?

yes, ig have done a cover of uncle john's band...it is on the greatful
dead album (in hoor of them, not by them) called _deadicated_.  it is
a great cd.  especially for me....and ex roomie was overly infatuated
with the dea.  (not to offend any deadheads out there...but listening to
sugar magnolia for 5 months was too mucg for me.)  anyways, when she
got the deadiated cd it was like a life saver.  indigo girls, and something
different than the same boot over and over and over and over...well, youget
the picture. =)  check it out!  there are a lot of great songs on it!

mandy (who is glad that her current roommate is such a great friend and
is more infatuated with the indigo girls, and micheal jackson than
the dead!  love ya shieldsy!  hehehehehe)

didn't they close with an american tune at the bridge concert last year?
they definitely did it at some point in the show, but probably closed with
ctf actually. but it was great to hear them singing a capella at shoreline
amphitheater.

looked to be a message from you to napikosk@somethingorother on time travel.

i know what you mean. some of mine were like that ("the hardest to calm
was the least agitated") but some ("the hardest to heat was the least
insulated") just made sense the way they were. :) i've come up with maybe
half a dozen more complications, if i get about another 10 i'll post
them. though i've started to run out of ideas. it may be time for a flip

or anyone from new mexico for that matter! :) i'm really planning on going.
louisiana seems kind of far from here though. well, i'm about 2 hours
away from el paso, and it's "800 miles to el paso from the state line..."
but hopefully i'll have the money for the flight. :)

whew. i just had a weird experience today, starting when i finally got
offline this evening to go do some thanksgiving baking... i was going to
make pecan pie and cranberry bread, so (after putting on swamp ophelia :) )
i started making the pie crust - but we were out of crisco! my parents were
out of town in alamogordo, so i decided i'd just wait for them to get
back. in the meantime i made the cranberry bread, singing the whole time.
they still weren't home so i went ahead and made the filling for the
pecan pie. though i got a little frustrated when i got a good look at the
bottle of corn syrup my mom bought the other day - instead of saying
"karo dark corn syrup", it was "karo pancake syrup"! a maple flavored
pecan pie - icky! i eventually found another bottle in the back of the
cupboard, and mixed the filling. then i waited... my parents finally got
back about 10:30, and by then the cd had played through about 4 times!
dad told me he had forgotten the crisco... he ran down to allsup's to buy
some, and 20 minutes later i finally started on my pie crust. :) it took
a while to make but now the pies are out of the oven and they look
beautiful. :) perfect for tomorrow. my dog helped me clean up (dogs are
very useful for cleaning up spills on the floor and such :) ) and then i
got back online to finish the rest of my mail... now it's 3:15 in the
morning and i am nearly falling asleep at the keyboard. anyway, tomorrow
should be fun - iff i can wake up in time for dinner...

dory, i find it interesting that you criticize the use of religious
imagry in the lyric poetry of igs songs.  i've noticed that the more you
study religions, the more you come to realize that so much of it is open
to interpretation;hence, the proliferation of so many (sometimes
antagonistic) christian sects all baseing their beliefs on the same book.
i agree with you that the judeo/christian philosophy is currently
disgustingly patriarchal, but there is evidence in the bible itself that
in earlier times it might not have been so very patriarchal and even not
so monotheistic.  in fact a prophetess named huldah may have been
instrumental in codifying a central core of the old testament.  but i
wander; i'm not a theology major as amy was, merely a history buff.  in
general it's not always fair to take words or phrases out of context
i think you mentioned jonas and ezekial in one of your earlier posts.
they are incredibly appropriate to what i think the message of the song
is.  ezekial was a prophet essentially sent to tell the religious leaders
of the day that they were helping themselves and not the people, and
jonas was a reluctant prophet who managed to change things for the
better.  trashing the song because of its biblical imagry is the same as
trashing the book huckleberry fin for its use of the word "nigger".
words are an imperfect way to communicate ideas; to listen to the words
and not the message negates the attempt at communication.  critiqing
lyric poetry based on specific words rather than the image or
feeling they convey is to miss the point.  i hope i didn't offend you, i
didn't intend to, just my two cents.

for all those concerned, i hope you are as outraged as i am.  the four
cornell students who posted the "top 75 reasons why women shouldn't have the
freedom of speech" list were not charged with sexual harassment.  they were
assigned 50 hours of community service and mandated to attend a workshop on
date rape.  *apparently*, because they did not intend the piece for the
harassees (i.e. all us folks) they were let off easy.  i think this deserves
some letter writing to the folks at cornell, don't you?  50 hours and a
workshop...

dear rebecca et al:

as one of the many people who worked hard to let cornell know how
displeased many of us were with the "75 reasons" list, i would like to
respond to your message.  my answer is no, i am *not* "outraged" that the
4 boys were *not* charged with sexual harrassment given what i have come
to understand of the case from the judicial administrator's report.

according to her own account, barbara krause, the judicial administrator,
in conjunction with marge hodges, legal policy advisor, found that these
boys did *not* post their message *publicly* (although that certainly
appeared to be the case from the postings i first saw, and i think that many
of us who responded to the "75 reasons" list were operating under that
impression).  the original 4 boys *sent* their list only to a select group of
approximately 20 friends.  the posting spread because of those original 20
someone, or several someones, decided to let yet more people know about
it.

the rest is history:  most of us who read the post did *not* share
the boys' "sense of humor," and we responded rapidly and en masse to let
them and the cornell administration know how we felt about it.

but *none* of the *original* people to whom the boys first posted their
message wish to step forward and press sexual harrassment charges against
them.

that's a line that i can't cross.  i urge you not to try to cross it either.

i think it's essential to respect the boundary between public and private
when dealing with first amendment issues and with sexual harrassment cases.

given the circumstances i believe that the 4 undergraduate boys' actions, no
matter how immature or hateful or offensive--and believe me, i think that
their actions were and are all three--are covered under the terms of the
constitution.

had the judicial administrator blurred the lines between public and
private, had cornell prosecuted these boys and found them guilty of sexual
harrassment and/or misuse of the internet in a suit brought against
them by someone to whom they *never sent* their message, the ruling would
have set a truly frightening precedent.

the consequences of such a ruling would be that anything you say to someone,
or a small circle of someones, or post to a list during "private" internet
"conversations" could be brought back against you should someone post your
response to someone who posts it to someone else who posts it to someone else
who finds it offensive and can convince a judge and jury that it's obscene.

if the passage of the canadian anti-porn laws years ago--which resulted in the
legal seizure *not* of snuff films, but of a lesbian sex magazine and a great
deal of hiv/aids education and prevention material--has anything to
teach us, it's that such a legal precedent would *not* be used primarily
against guys like the cornell 4, but against marginalized groups and/or
people on the political left.

i believe that krause and hodges drove as hard a bargain with the boys as
they could under the circumstances, and i think that the boys' eagerness
to volunteer for community service even though they weren't actually found
guilty of anthing indicates the extent to which they understand the need
to rectify their public image.  whether or not they'll ever really
understand what they did wrong (other than getting caught) is anyone's guess.
but i think that their actions, the response of men and women all over the
globe, and the amount of media hype this whole thing has received will serve
as a warning to others.

my thanks to everyone who took part in letting cornell and these boys
know that misogyny, sexual abuse, homophobia, and violence against women are
not a laughing matter to most of us.

having discovered one another, i hope that some of the more
technologically-gifted people among us will try to set up some kind of a
system whereby we can let one another know of related issues.

best wishes,

nancy goldstein

g'day, y'all...
with all of the talk of the jazz fest in new orleans, i thought i'd add a bit
to the discussion.  i saw amy and emily play the jf three(?) years ago, and
they blew me away.  that was my first real exposure to the girls, and i
haven't been the same since.  as you all know, the indigos find a lot of ther
energy in the crowd, and when they look out and see literally a sea of people
dancing around and just generally loving life, it must really invigorate
them.  it was just a magnificent show.

for canadians who listen to cbc am radio (and the lucky americans who can pick
it up on shortwave), definitely not the opera is airing the winnipeg honor the
earth concert this saturday 4-5pm. here's the promo:

*today we've got just the thing to warm you up on a cold november day.
a special live concert with the indigo girls.  why so special?  well,
the indigo girls touched down in winnipeg last may to present their
"honor the earth" benefit concert.  co-sponsored by the indigenous
women's network,  the month long tour is the largest single fund-raising
event in the history of native american activism.  it has raised more
than 300,000 dollars and created a network of tens of thousands of
supporters for native people.  an honorable feat from a very talented
duo.  so, get into that mood indigo and get set for one hot hour.
recorded live at winnipeg's walker theatre - amy ray and emily saliers -
the indigo girls.

and, may i add, dnto is pretty cool show even when ig isn't featured.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

there is a trojan program being promoted as a new and more
powerful version of the aol user software that is being
distributed by e-mail.  the trojan program named aolgold.zip or
install.exe is used to delete target areas of a dos file system,
by having the user execute a batch file that masquerades as an
        installation script.

this trojan horse will *not* affect macintosh machines,
but it's not a bad idea to get the word around to mac users anyway.

systems affected

this trojan program will affect any dos file system.  this can
include dos, dos/windows, win95 and windows nt, as they all
        support dos file systems.

problem

the aolgold.zip and install.exe files contain the trojan and are
being e-mailed to users. the trojan is being promoted as a new
and better tool for america on-line services. needless to say,
this is not an enhancement or upgrade to the aol connection
        software.

once the files have been installed on the pc, there is a risk
that someone may unzip and/or execute the install.exe file.
        therefore, remove them at once.

if the aolgold.zip is unzipped and/or the install.exe is
executed, it is a self-extracting archive, new files will appear
in the directory of the disk drive that the original trojan
containers were stored.  the new files will be:

                macros.drv
                video.drv
                install.bat
                adrive.rpt
                suspend.drv
                annoy.com
                macro.com
                sp-net.com
                sp-win.com
                membrinf.com
                device.com
                textmap.com
                host.com
                rep.com
                ems2ext.sys
                ems.com
                ems.sys
                readme.txt

the destructive files containing the trojan are:

                macros.drv
                video.drv
                install.bat

the remainder of the files are not used.

you have already gone too far.  you should stop at once.  the
install.bat, if run, will cause damage to your system.

in the event that you did run the install.bat program, then your
system has been attacked.  the trojaned batch file renames
video.drv to virus.bat and then targets specific directories and
does a dos "del" command on files.  the target directories in the
        evaluation copy were:

        dos and windows system directories:
                c:\
                c:\dos
                c:\windows
                c:\windows\system
                c:\wpwin60
                c:\msworks

        tools for dos enhancement directories:
                c:\qemm
                c:\stacker
                c:\norton

user service providers and game directories:
                c:\aol20
                c:\prodigy
                c:\aol25
                c:\aohell
                c:\inn
                c:\cserve
                c:\mmp169
                c:\doom
                c:\wolf3d
                c:\sierra
                c:\links386
                c:\doom2

when the batch file completes its execution, it prints a crude
message to the screen and attempts to execute the doomday.exe
program.  fortunately, there are errors in this version of the
batch file, which prevents the proper execution of the
        doomday.exe program.

another bug in the batch file causes itself to delete itself, if
not executed form the c: drive.  unfortunately, if there is a
non-write-protected disk in the a: or b: drive, all the files
starting with the letters a-v will be deleted until the batch
        file deletes itself.

if you have executed the install.bat file, you should print the
virus.bat file and identify the specific directories that were
        attacked on your machine.

i'm not outraged at all. in fact, i'm a little relieved. i was upset
about the whole cornell hate list in the beginning, but i got over it.
out on this big information highway, we all will be exposed to ideas of
which we are not especially fond.

i had the *right* to write these boys back and say tell them my
"75 reasons why you are a putz".

the response to the hate list has smacked of limiting one's freedom of
speech. how far a step will it be for someone else to step in and say to
one of us "hey, you have no right to say these things... it offends me".
the aclu has spent most of their expended resourses assuring
*everyone's* freedom of speech.

it may not be pretty, it may not be what you want to hear, but we have
1st amendment rights that must not be tampered with just because you
disagree with the message. i may not agree with what you are saying, but
i support your freedom to say your piece.

for the record, i think what the boys said was obnoxious. perhaps, they
have learned a lesson by accepting the 50 hours of commnity service.

i understand why people are so offended by so many judgemental,
closed-minded, force-feeding, non-christlike christians.  because that's what
they are.  my only aim is this:  please don't automatically label all
christians with the previously-mentioned connotations.  in reality, that is
not what christianity is all about.  it's about jesus christ.  and i'll tell
y'all...ain't no way jesus would act like that!!!!!  so that's all i have to
say--that i empathize w/ you when it comes to obnoxious and self-righteous
people who use the name of christ to justify un-christlike behavior.  now,
i'm not saying that a "real" christian is just like jesus--that's impossible.
and i'm proof enough for that!!!!  and that's the whole point: we are weak,
he is strong.  so, when you see some wacked-out, wrong-minded, silly
christian not reflecting the complete love and complete righteousness of
christ (which is all of us at some times), please do remember that it is at
that point that the person's own sinfulness is shining through and not jesus.

see what i'm trying to say?  please know that i'm not trying to _start_
anything here...especially as this is an older post i'm referring to.  i
simply want you all to know the truth of what christianity is **supposed** to
be about--not what the "in-the-public-eye" hypocrites display.
i hope you all know i'm not trying to offend anyone...that is the farthest
thing from my mind.  and i'm sorry if anybody finds this nigc irritating, but
the thread it stems from was equally nigc.  thanx for being patient and
reading this out.  if you have any particualr reactions to my post, i would
really appreciate it if you contacted me privately so as to *not* make this a
source of conflict.
thanx again, fellow indigs <smile>, and remember that we do all share a
"connection through time (e.s.)" w/ each other through & with our beloved
indigos.
peace out :)

no, i'm afraid not. and because it is after business hours, there is no way i

under the moniker radio canada international. this might help anyone interested

the efnet channel #indigo-girls is still in existence although i tend to
stick with the new #indigo-girls channel on dalnet, as it is (imho) a
friendlier irc network.

for more info about dalnet, check out their web site at http://www.dal.net

in the last paragraph or on the photo caption, she says that she wants to be

wow.  wishful thinking.  i wonder how many of us have had that fantasy!

oh well.

hi everyone,

thanks shanta *so* much for posting re. the concert on cbc radio today!  as soon
as i got 1200 curfews and noticed that "this train revised" was taped by the
cbc, i was wondering if/when they would broadcast the concert.  thanks to you i
didn't miss it!  the broadcast was about 50 minutes including:

least complicated
power of two
reunion
joking
let it be me
jonas & ezekial
love will come to you
the wood song
galileo
closer to fine

(sorry if this is redundant info -- i get the digest format)

i found it interesting that they didn't include the song "this train revised" in
the broadcast, even though the version was picked to be a part of 1200c.

did anyone else notice that the intro to galileo sounds like the one used on
1200c -- i guess they used the winnipeg intro with the london, england,
performance!?

i taped the concert (as i'm sure others did too).  i don't have the best audio
equipment, but if anyone wants a copy, let me know and we can work out
something.  if there are a lot of people that want copies, maybe we can see how
many people taped the concert and go from there...

well, we had to wait an extra month for the release of 1200c here in canada, but
we were rewarded with the live concert on the radio today!

i just thought i'd help you guys out a little bit.  let me start by telling
you that i am a travel agent.  first, hotel rooms in new orleans are booked
at least a year in advance.  most all of the hotels request that you pay for
your entire stay up front and the are no refunds.  second, as you have
probaby guessed (since the city is sold out) the hotels charge top dollar for
the rooms that they do have.  if you are really serious about this you need
to find yourself a travel agent who does conventions and meeting planning
and is willing to spend lots of time and money begging for a block of rooms.

good luck!

having the "second biggest ig bootleg collection" (according to sherlyn's
recent www survey) i feel the need to post this.  if you are not
interested in bootlegs or crime, this message will probably be of no
interest to you.

during the past 6 months, i have facilitated numerous trades and bootleg
requests with no problem.  however, due to a recent senseless act of
violence, i am now out both a home stereo and a car window.  with no job
and no income, i have no way of replacing it so, sadly, i can no longer
make any more tape/bootleg trades.

i am sending this to the entire list as many of you "refer" people to me
for bootlegs.  although my lists are still available via www, they serve
no real purpose unless you are in the atlanta area and are willing to let
me camp out with your stereo for a few hours.

if you have an outstanding trade with me and did not receive my e-mail
earlier this week, please contact me immediately.

peace(?)
stacie

first off, i apologize profusely if i previously sent out a very
garbled message that was a result of writing down the wrong address and
then forwarding the returned mail to the correct address (i am sort of
tired and out of it right now, had a 6 hour drive today). i am very sorry

it seems like i only post to the list when i have a question, or in this

it's definitely "blue food", it says so on marianne pyra's discography.
but some bootleggers might have made a mistake and put "flood" on the copies
they made.   but i think the originals were called blue food.

blue food.

look in the sept 1995 issue of record collector magazine for an illustration

last year brookside (a british soap set in liverpool) showed two lesbians

kissing;  the former had also been involved in the murder of her abusive
father.   then the producer got a letter complaining about beth's ripped jeans!

subject:      frank stanford

i have a bit of a mystery to solve, folks, and i knew the trusty ig list was
the best place to turn to for help. we all know the story according to amy:
frank stanford was an obscure southern poet. she got a book of his poems, and
was deeply moved. then she found out he killed himself by shooting himself
three times in the heart. hence the song, three hits. now the mystery. a
friend and i have been doing a little research on mr. stanford. turns out we
couldn't find any mention of the name stanford. (i can't remember all the
places he checked, but he was doing word searches over the net, and he was
checking the library of congress.) he also checked under the keywords: poet,
and suicide. nothing. he finally did find something under the name, "stanton."
now frank l. _stanton_ was a rather obscure georgian poet who was born in the
1850's, and died in the 1920's of apparently natural causes. he was sick for 3
days before he succumbed. he was a newspaper columnist, and he seemed
generally well liked, and not the tortured artist you'd expect. furthermore,
we checked out his solitary book of poems, and i hate to tell you this, but
they're really _really_ corny. the book is called "songs of the soil" and it's
about his love of the south. lots of stuff about flowers and fields of grain.
nothing that struck me as emotional or moving in any way. (but then, maybe i'm
a hard audience.) so does anyone know more about stanford/stanton? are these
two different poets? if so, does anyone know where i can get my hands on a
book by _stanford_? did amy get the name wrong? did amy get the story of his
death wrong? did amy think this cornball was really a fantastic poet? or am i
totally barking up the wrong proverbial tree? any help would be appreciated! :)

lorindigo et al,

'tis definitely frank stanford - someone threw a book of his poems at
my head once, that's how i know... hehehe... 'twas pretty dark stuff
if i recall correctly (the impact may have affected my memory, i'm not
sure....)

ps - looking at the ig newsletter that arrived in the post last week (we
overseas fans are sorely neglected, i am afraid) - did it strike anyone
else as odd that amy wrote about how they are looking at 'getting an

that would have been to read for anyone out there who doesn't know what
a web site is... hehe

i don't think this solves the mystery but it's a clue... on the last page
of the rop insert (is that what it's called?- the little booklet in the
cd with all the lyrics) there's a quote from one of frank stanford's
poems.  it's called "the snake doctors" and the name of the book is the
singing knives and it was pubished in 1979 by lost roads publishers.  so
i guess it's not frank stanton (thankfully), but that's all i know.

subject:      re: frand stanford

well, i'm trying to put off writing that paper that is due tomorrow
morning so i did a little research about frank stanford.

i found a collection of his poetry which was published in 1991 called
"the light the dead see." it is edited by leon stokesbury and published
by the university of arkansas press (one thing i have learned in
college...make sure to give credit to where your info comes from!:) ).

anyway, stokesbury says that stanford did infact die by 3 shots in the
heart at age 29. he was born in mississippi but moved to arkansas at age
15 where he spent the rest of his life.

the book gives a lot of really good biographical information and some
interesting details of his life which i would be happy to read a little
more carefully and post to the list after this term is over (dec 7) if
people are really interested. i also am interested in reading some of the
poems myself, and if people would like to read one or two i could probably
post a few to the list.

as far as amy's song. three things that i felt like i understood better
(but maybe not!) after reading a bit about stanford...

1. "well i dream you constant stranger"
one of stanfords books was called "constant stranger"
2. "mother do you claim me"
stanford found out he was adopted on his adoptive fathers death
when he was 15. i don't know if the issue of adoption appears in
his poetry, but it is possible that he did have some issue about being
adopted and his parents "claiming him" (warning...english majors
sometimes read into things a little to much!!!!)
3. "my beloved do you blame me"
stanford married twice, he married and divorced, then married
again. his personal life was "involved" and "took a considerable
psychological toll" on the poet. just sound like his life with his
      "beloved" was not the greatest.

well, i hope that helped a little more with this discussion. i wish i
could be writing my paper on this topic, but got to get back to the
real paper! like i said, if people are interested, i can post more on
this topic at the end of the term.

sure  wish i had the cd with me so i could remember that quote...but this
is interesting....

"was a dead man floating down the river"
                  frank  stanford

buh bye

so i guess there is nothing you've ever sent anyone by email that
might offend someone that *it wasn't meant for*?  i guess if every
piece of email all of us ever wrote were broadcast across the 'net,
we'd all come off scott-free, because we're all so pure?

i sure as hell know about some mail *i've* written that i wouldn't

pissed if it resulted in me losing my account and being otherwise
punished.

anyway..

except "hard" is not the same as "complicated".  the point being made
was that often the things we find most difficult to learn are the most
basic concepts.  not "hard", just non-complex.

an example of this is the concept of infinity.  it's really quite
un-complicated, yet it is extremely hard for the human mind to really
wrap itself around it.  people don't like to hear that there are
as many positive integers as there are integers over all.. :)

and on..

when some doofus send some moronic message to the list, i got mail
from somebody asking that unsubscribe said person.  i can't do that,
since he was not subscribed to the list.  you don't have to be
subscribed to post, which should be apparent from some of the
messages.  to restrict posting in such a way would complicate things
quite a bit, and i don't think it's warranted at this time.  anyway,
this situation was taken care of, as we all saw.

i was gone for thanksgiving week, so am just catching up with
everything.  also, my birthday was yesterday (sunday).  woo. woo.
and we saw arlo & pete on friday at carnegie hall.  it was a blast! as
usual, of course... :)  ate some great food, saw some old friends..  a
few pretty big surprises..

and now i have tons of work to catch up on...

not to worry y'all!!

i have confidence that we will pull this off.  if we have to we can stay
somewhere nearby and rent a big bus or something to drive to the
festival.  i will find a way.  besides, it's not what you know, it's who
you know in situations like this.  for all interested in the trip, i am
compiling a list of all your names, and as soon as i can get more info
about everything, i'll send private e-mails, followed by a list message.
eric, if you're out there, let's talk!

talk at you later

hey y'all-
if anyone doesn't have 'shades' and wants to own it and actually has money
this holiday season, i've just received a note from a record store i've
bought stuff from before saying they have a copy for sale for $50.  the
letter's dated nov. 13th, so there's no telling if they still have it, but
if you're interested enough to try contacting them, e-mail me privately and
i'll send you info on how to reach them.

subject:      re: the bible really isn't sexist

i don't want to beat a dead horse here, but i do feel a need to defend
what i believe in.  several people have written in recently saying that
the bible is male dominated, etc.  if one takes a closer look at the
bible, however,he/she will discover that this really is not true.  for
example,
galatians 3:28 tells us that that "...there is neither male nor female:
for we are all one in christ jesus."  also there whole books in the bible
written about women.  take esther, for example.  here is a story about a
woman who was used by god to save the jewish race from annhilation.  ruth
is another example.  deborah, a woman, was an old testament judge, a
political leader of the day.  granted, there are some passages in there
that would be considered sexist (i.e. a woman should submit to her
husband), but these are reflections of the culture (which considered man
"superior" to woman), not reflections of christianity itself (which
considers all equal).  i am sorry if this offends anyone, for that is not
what i want to do.  i only want you to see things from a christian's
perspective as well.  if anyone has any comments regarding what i just
said, please send it to me personally, i don't want to fill the list with
non-indigo stuff anymore than necessary.

hey y'all,
i want to thank everyone who responded to my question about frank stanford. i
knew you'd come through for me. y'all just rock the world! for those of you
who are just on the edge of your seats waiting for an answer to my question,
here's the deal. frank stanton (corny poet) and frank stanford (good poet) are
two different guys. stanford is much more contemporary, and he did indeed die
at the age of 29 by shooting himself 3 times in the heart. the book we're
looking for is "the light the dead see, the collected poems of frank stanford"
(1991) and i even have the isbn # 1-55728-192-0. there's also apparently
another one, "the singing knives" (1979). sorry if some of this is repeated
info, i didn't check my messages to see which ones were sent publicly. but i
did want to publicly thank everyone who helped me.

and now for something utterly and completely nigc. sorry about this, but for
some strange reason i feel the need to bring this up. someone recently
mentioned our inability to comprehend the concept of infinity. this is, of
course, true. but i have my own personal theory on the idea of infinity. are
you ready for this? i believe that _except_ for in the realm of mathematics,
which is an abstract concept, infinity does _not_ exist. that is, i believe
nothing in nature is truly infinite. not the universe, not time, not the
number of particles in the universe, not anything. care to argue (privately)?
i just thought i'd toss that out there for some unexplained reason. again,
sorry for the nigc, i guess i'm in a weird mood.

evening :)

it's amazing how many ways i find to procrastinate.

>granted, there are some passages in there
>that would be considered sexist (i.e. a woman should
>submit to her
>husband),

actually, i would consider that passage to be very
anti-sexist, in as much as the next bit asks of men
to honour their wives, to treat them as their
equal, which, at the time, they were not doing :)

and the catholic faith, with which i'm not so familiar
has a woman as one of it's central icons, no??

especially when compared to islam, and other world
religions, i would say that christianity is prolly the
fairest to all.

love is the answer. as john lennon once said...

i did the stupidest thing the other day.
i had a huge fight with my parents.
that wasn't the stupid thing.
i used something to hurt them which ended up hurting me.
they always criticize indigo girls.
it really gets to me at times.
my dad wanted to take my cds, my ig cds, away.
i got upset.
i didn't want him to have the satisfaction of taking something important to me
away.
i broke my cds.
i cried.

i'm sorry, but this is too good to be left to myself...

if i may quote from spinal tap (as is unfortunately my wont from time to time,
although the medication should help, so i've been reliably informed...)
maybe paraphrase, i'm not sad enough to know the film by heart...

'you try to extrapolate the end of the universe, and you say that it is indeed
infinite. but if it ends, where does it end, and what's behind what's stopping
is, so what is the end...is my question...to you...'

i guess you had to be there...

@}--,--'--

obigc, amy believes in infinity. i think. didn't she use it next to the go
speed racer bit on n*i*s. so there you go. if amy said it, it must be true :):)
she prolly likes spinal tap too...

actually, now i remember...when i was outside hammersmith many moons ago (last
june it must have been) with sonia (are you still out there sonia, i hope it
was sonia...oops...i tend to be crap with names like that...)

anyway, so we were out the front when a&em arrived, and they got out the taxi
and they were looking for the stage door (which, being neil the concert man i
know all about :>) so we were headed to it, and it was so far that amy was going
'hello cleveland! rock and roll!!!' the point being that yes, amy does like
spinal tap, and there's the proof, even though i meant it as kindof a joke, and
yes, maybe that fourth chocolate bar pushed my sugar levels too high for the
day, and maybe i should get to sleep.

again, i guess you had to be there. or have seen the movie...
or preferably both...
