i asked amy about that about five years ago... i have a vague recollection
of telling her that i felt her minor lyric changes really worked very well.
(in retrospect, i was being a real fanboy, but she played along nicely.)
anyway, she said something to the effect that she'd played it so often
herself that she could never really remember what the lines were in the dire
straits version, so she kind of mixes it up a bit.

indigo girls have been performing this live as an a capella number for
several years... two live recordings have been released, in fact.
the most available version is on a cd called "turn of the decade 1989-1990:
ben and jerry's newport folk festival."
another, more intimate version is on the (much harder to find) "reverse 1
live" promo cd. the same version is on a uk single for "closer to fine".
i, personally, would like to hear amy sing "because the night," by bruce
springsteen and patti smith. i actually heard amy sing part of it in a
soundcheck five years ago, and it left me wanting more...

i used to dub things on high-speed dubbing when i had my old stereo, and
emily and
amy sounded sooooo cute as chipmunks! =) i think my favorite song of theirs
to listen to at high speed is let it be me, but power of two is a close
second. oh, and i just got a sony illegalbootperson, and you can control how

oh for the days of variable sound !.....one thing i really miss is being
able to control the volume and speed on my stereo while dubbing
...this option is not available on my newer model...for that matter
i also like sererate bass and treble controls (not the cheesy
"dance, rock, pop and classical" options)
i think i just may be a wee bit of a control freak ;)
just listened to an illeagalboot tape yesterday (thanks p.g.!) and i have two
observations.
1: i love the way a&e changed the lyrics on "let it be me"
from "the president, has no idea who the masses are...."
to "that old congress, has no idea who the masses are..."
i was wondering how they were going to update that one,
nice touch !
2: emloyment opportunities : if the singer/songwriter,
record company owner, music reviewer thing doesn't
work out for amy, she would make one hell of an
evangelical preacher.....i guess it's genetic ;)

subject: nigc tracy chapman review
the tracy chapman show was wonderful. it was at the greek in los
angeles on
july 19. she seemed in such good spirits. she seemed overwhelmed by
all the
people screaming that they loved her... she even blushed a couple of
times.
the set list:
new beginning
baby can i hold you
at this point in my life
for my lover
smoke & ashes
crossroads
behind the wall (a capella)
the promise
rape of the world
all that you have is your soul
moutains of things
1st encore
fast car
dreaming on a world
tell it like it is
give me one reason
why
2nd encore
proud mary
talkin' bout a revolution
amazing grace
the highlights for me were fast car, give me one reason, and proud
mary.
she gave fast car a slower tempo and it had a sing-along, reggae feel.
the song
sounded less dramatic and almost celebratory. it was wonderful!!
the crowd was
dancing for give me one reason, and when she paused at the end the
whole
crowd chimed in "there ain't no more to say." wow!!
she did john fogerty's proud mary just like ike & tina turner, slow
at first, then
fast. tracy was dancing and jumping around doing some of her best
tina moves.
she looked like she loved leading her band through a rock and roll
tune!! she
didn't talk much to the audience between songs, but right before tell
it like it is,
she read comments on 3x5 cards written by the audience members. some
of my
favorite phrases were "rain forests, not golf courses," and "why
can't we vote
for someone instead of against something?"
she seemed really happy, and she did thank the crowd a few times.
all in all a
good show!!!! my only disappointment was that she didn't do subcity.
the opening act, the charlie hunter quartet was a jazz band, 2
saxophones, a
guitar and drums. they did instrumental tunes but didn't leave an
impression
one way or the other with me.
in other news, the billboard album chart states that new beginning
has gone past
the 2 million mark in sales!

for those of you that i haven't told personally, i recently got a new job
with radio shack as a manager trainee. the bad news is this involves alot of
hours at the store but the good news is indigo girls goes into the cd player
as soon as i get there in the morning and plays til i leave at night. the
customers seem to like the music and you can even see some of them mouthing
the words along with amy & emily. i hope this isn't breaking any silly
copyright rules or anything cuz it sure brightens my day.

also where would be the best place to look for roommate ads once i get into
town..

greetings to all the listies out there....
i have no great contribution tonight...just had to let everyone
know that i am off tomorrow to lansing to take the bar exam
which is actually going to be given tuesday and wednesday!!!
wish me luck!!! i am just so excited to go and get this over
with, since i have been studying all summer. i am going to jam!! ;>)
(i hope.)
just so all of you know too, this list has been one very big reason
why i am sane, since after studying at night, i usually would read my mail
and remember there were bigger and better things in life than (expensive)
standardized tests...better things like all the good people out there
writing on the list and of course, the two greatest musicians alive!!!
where else could i write in for all the star trek info you would want to
know.....goofy lyrics about neglige...even better interpretations of tmf..
..other ramblings about how great bruce springsteen and led zepplin are
.....awesome trades and boot offers ( nojazz, catie curtis, scot's plaid
album..) the latest concert info (even though i will not be seeing the girls
until they come remotely close to mi) and so many other things
that are too long to list. everyone out there - i just want to say thanks
for participating- you are awesome !! i mean it!!
see you on the other side of freedom---

ok, i've come up w/ an idea. i don't know if it's been done yet but i'm sure
you'll let me know. i am sure that there are a lot of musicians/writers on
this list. i know that there was a tape made of listees doing ig songs, but i
thought it would be cool to make a "greatest hits" tape of listees original
songs.all listees w/ original songs could mail me what they consider their
best song & i'd make a compilation tape.i think it would be real interesting
to hear our fellow ig fans' original songs.any one interested please e-mail
me & i'll see if i can make this happen.
thanks for reading,
please give me feedback on this idea

oh goody! what a great thread... heheheh..
let me add some to susan's already brilliant list:
-"hurt me! hurt me! (but the pants stay on)" by that wonderful
songstress samantha fox
-"stand by your man" by i forget who - actually, the girls could
do this kind of tongue-in-cheek, it might be quite funny - maybe
we could rewrite some lyrics for them...
-"down with opp" by some rap group - see susan's previous note about
two white girls doing rap + not exactly feminist lyrics ;)
-anything by shania twain
"bye bye mon cowboy" by mitsou - they could wear those little hot
pants with their cowboys boots and wiggle their derrieres seductively
for the camera :p
"have you ever loved a woman" by brian adams - for cheese factor alone
what a wonderful new way to avoid working :)

stayin' alive, by beegees
walk like an egyptian
achy breaky heart, by whatever that guy's name was---although, if the

oooooohhhhhh ... this is a fun one! so suggests anything by nine inch
nails, especially animal. 15 year old daughter sarah suggests summertime
man by salt-n-pepa, maybe anything by them. and while we're discussing
chipmunks, how about chipmunk love by captain and tenille, whoops that was
muskrat love, wasn't it?
anyway, i'll send in mine later.

i get home from a week long camping trip, log on and the list

so what in my world are the songs the igs should never under
*any* circumstances cover?...
well...i'd rather chew on tin foil with my many fillings whilst being
serenaded by twelve pairs of fingernails screaming over a
chalk board than hear either of them do "don't worry, be happy" by...
ummm... i ferget...
okay... and how about that ridiculous paul anka song... "having my
baby"??? or, for that matter *any* of those sappy seventies songs like
"tell laura i love her", "billy don't be a hero", "rocky", or "seasons
in the sun"....
okay... so i'm dating myself... but no one else will.

oh wow,
this "songs ig should not do" thread is hilarious! i immediately thought
of a couple misogynist rap songs with titles too horrible to mention.
those are definitely =out.= but there's gotta be a slew of horrible early
80's songs that'd be truly puke-inducing. what about...
"(indigo) girls just wanna have fun?" yikes!
"(indigo) girl you know it's true?" double yikes!
"i wanna sex you up." ow. pain.
"two of hearts" by stacey q. i'll stop. this is just too horrific. won't
even mention any of the late-80's hits written by diane warren...
or imagine amy singing "head like a hole?" way too scary. ;)
but i really want to hear them do come on eileen with hothouse flowers
providing the necessary irish instrumentation. what a great song that
was, a must for any college 80's dance! my dream is also to sing suite
judy blue eyes with them someday. i'll do stephen's part, but amy can
grab the solo vocal that goes "can i tell it like it is/will you listen to
me baby/it's my heart that's suffering, it's dying/and that's what i
have to lose..." i wanna hear her rip that one out, it'd be incredible...
okay, on to one other note...

i'm really glad someone brought this up again! this was being organized
as early as february, and a bunch of us mailed in tapes, but the thing
never got actually put together... the idea was that everyone could
submit 10 minutes worth of stuff (since we ended up getting about nine
takers.) but it hasn't actually been put together and released... dan,
you still out there? what's up with this? =) can we get it out there
now, or should we redo it, or what?

for songs i'd least like to see ig cover:
having my baby - i can't remember who sings it or if this is the right
name, but if you've ever heard it, you know what i'm talking about.
while suicidal tendenscies included a masterful cover of it in their
"golden shower of hits" medley - which also included afternoon delight,
love will keep us togeather, and d-i-v-o-r-c-e, among other drippy 70's
tunes - i don't think i'd want to here an ig version.
others: it's raining men, pull up to the bumper, mr. sandman, (hunka
hunka) burning love, barney's theme song.
and oh so many others.

(this post, by the way, is just to let kim know that my heart is now broken

"chevy van" though, would be cool. and yes, i suppose those of you out there

i also think "friends and lovers" might also be a bit too much, don't you

no bad 80's ballads, period!
"(indigo) girls just wanna have fun?" yikes!
"(indigo) girl you know it's true?" double yikes!
"i wanna sex you up." ow. pain.
"two of hearts" by stacey q. i'll stop. this is just too horrific. won't
even mention any of the late-80's hits written by diane warren...
to add to your stacey q. nightmare, could you ever imagine the girls
doing a guest spot on "facts of life" and singing "two of hearts"?
that would definately be too much for me. i'd better stop, i'm

scary, ain't it?
to replace these i suggest:
"can't smile without you" -- barry "the man" manilow
"queen of hearts" -- juice newton
"xanadu" -- olivia newton john
imho -- really bad, sappy songs (read anything by air supply) wouldn't

foxy lady, jimi hendrix (i was kinda hesitant, but i don't think even amy

boom boom, john lee hooker

one way out, the allman brothers band

heh, heh !!!! this one actually has pretty good 'camp' appeal !!
i recently saw a drag/performance art/musical, that centered
around this tune ("wild horses, the diary of dawn dawn").
it was brilliant !
the song gets stuck in the head like a bad acid trip ;)

hi all!
i've had many listees write me asking "what exactly is an enhanced
cd?" and while i was browsing the web i found this article at:
http://www.cnet.com/content/reviews/enhanced/
which explains it pretty well. the bad news is there is no mention of
an ig enhanced in the articles. :( however, it does offer good
enhanced cd info and a chance to preview the e-cds of other artists such
as sarah mclachlan and bob dylan in the "jukebox" area!

yes, yes, yes... i've been rolling on the floor as i read the replies to
this message.
i'm having some difficulty thinking of covers i'd rather have a hot caramel
enema than hear a&e do. i really love caramel ; )
1) gangsters- the specials. don't get me wrong- i love the specials but
ska doesn't seem to be the right sound for the girls.
2) add it up- violent femmes. great song, but i can't picture a or e
screaming, 'why can't i get just one fuck?'
3) you ain't seen nothin yet- ? you know, that song, 'you ain't seen nothin
yet, b-b-b-baby you just ain't seen n-n-n-nothin' yet' . ugh! they're
playing this song in some car commercial and it, like, sucks and stuff,
heheheh
4) if you leave- omd. remember, from the movie pretty in pink? wow, that
brings me back to my sweet 16 and i wanna hurl.... anyway, all those new wave
groups of the 80's played too many synthesizers. not a&e's style.
5) addicted to love- robert palmer. can you picture a&e singing with those
chicks with the tight black dresses and bright red lipstick?
just off the top of my head....

i don't know about that caramel enema thing... how did you come up with

about it...
to get a little more out there on songs that i either want to hear them do,
or really don't want to hear them do (you can never really be sure...)
i can make you a man- or anything from rocky horror, really...
cowtown- they might be giants, and that song mammals on apollo eighteen
the crunge- led zeppelin, for those of y'all who aren't led heads, the
crunge is funk... with robert plant freestyling in this really high
soprano... you need to hear it to get the full effect...
professional widow- tori amos... i think they could do some of
her stuff well, and vice versa... but this particular song
is off boys for pele... last line being "love and a hard cock" i dunno,
i can't see it..
anything by nirvana
if i were a rich man- fiddler on the roof... maybe it's the cover of
strange fire that gives me trouble when i try to think
of the girls doing the hora...
the abc's- we've all heard it, we all know it... it's just not something
to be redone...
subteranean homesick blues- bob dylan
anything where they have to use bob dylan's voice...
godzilla- blue oyster cult, one of the cults classics; there's even
harmony in the chorus, if you listen carefully
going up the country- i can't remember who does this... wait, canned heat
i think it is, can't you just imagine amy singing that song?
i know y'all are sick o' me throwin all this stuff in here, but i just
can't resist, ya know? i promise, until the next time i post something;
this is the last one...

subject: tape trading tips
all,
i just found a pretty good web article on tape trading... they've got tips
on equipment, recording, trading info and etiquette, all kinds of good stuff.
it's somewhat oriented towards grateful dead traders, but it's good
information for tapers and traders in general.
the url is http://www.wilma.com/extras/taping.html.

subject: sony professional walkman....availble (migc)
greetings all,
with all the recent talk about recording shows
and the comparing of equipment. i thought i would
throw in my 2 cents and make an offer. as many
others on the list, i started back in 1985 with a little
sony walkman (lone justice was the first show i taped)
later i graduated to an aiwa and then finally to the sony
wm-d3 professional walkman which i only use to record shows.
what, you may ask, is the difference? well the simple
answer to that is "recording level" controls. you control
the intensity of the incoming signal. most standard
walkmans have what's called a "limiter" which sets
the level at a standard range depending on the loudness
of the incoming signal.
a good example of the "limiter" would be someone standing
next to you while emily is singing "mystery". all of a sudden
that person next to you screams "romeo and juliet" at the top
of their lungs. the "limiter" detects that signal overload and drops
the recording level down until its back to where the standard level
should be.
this is most apparant on older tapes where the audience applauds
real loud and you hear everything drop down for a few seconds. it
does becoming annoying after a while. well, i have now finally graduated
from my sony wm-d3 to a sony tcd-d7 which is their portable dat recorder.
so i am now left with a sony wm-d3 professional walkman that i don't need
anymore.
if anyone thinks they would be interested in this, please let me
know. the unit is almost 4 years old and i purchased it for $300.
i am asking $75 for it plus shipping. as i said the unit has never
been used for anything but taping shows and is in excelent condition.
the unit and accesories are black. it has recording as well as battery
level indicators which you can turn off and a tape counter. it records and
plays back in dolby stereo and has metal tape capability (pb only).
it comes with a stereo microphone that can plug directly into the unit
but also has a cord microphone stand that can either rest on a table
or can clip to a shirt pocket or jacket collar, very discreet. it also
comes with its own carrying case.
for those who crave even more information...it has a capstan servo
amorphous head and requires 2 aa batteries but also has an optional
dc input. there are also both "line in" and "line out" jacks as well
as a headphone out and volume control.
if interested, please let me know...
thanks,
michael bunch :-)

hi folks,
well, i went to see dar williams play last night in london - she was really
great - didn't know she'd be so funny! audience were pretty uptight though
- wouldn't sing along, boring sods, and everyone was most disapproving when
a couple of dykes dared to get up to dance near the stage (nope, wasn't me!)
heartily recommend seeing her if you get the chance - and helene and gail -
you're going to have a goood time!!!
got my t-shirt this morning! thanks rob and deb - you did a really great
job! trouble is, i didn't anticipate that an xxl would be quite as large as
it is - so, is there anyone out there that wants to swap their xl for my xxl
(unworn)? pretty please? otherwise i am going to have the coolest
nightshirt ever - which is a shame cos i'd like to wear it out and show it off!
on a serious note - haven't seen anyone mention the atlanta bombing - it
really alarmed me when i heard the news - i figured a free rock concert in
atlanta - maybe some listies would be there... got worried in case any of
our favourite musicians might be as well... anyway, here's hoping that
everyones okay...
take care

subject: 1995: rave magazine
february 8-14, 1995 -- rave magazine
closer (to fine) encounter of the heard kind
interviewer: tony horner
it's 1:40am in atlanta, georgia, and the indigo girls have just returned
home after doing a television show in new york. atlanta, i'm sure you know,
will host the '96 olympic games, but interestingly, it's also been making
headlines as the new center of african-american culture. chuck d is one of
many rappers who spends much of his time there. at the same time though,
atlanta, like many other american cities, is dealing with violence, which
is, it must be pointed out, really a poverty thing that a black thing.
"it's bad in our city," emily reflects. "there are a lot of young black men
being killed and suffering."
"that's pretty hardcore there, i wouldn't say it's to the same extent (as
south central la) here, but wherever gang warfare is going on in an urban
area, i think it's just as bad as anywhere in the country. but it's a very
big country, there's a lot of horrible stuff going on, a lot of great stuff
going on. it's important to be aware of both things."
the indigo girls' songs are deeply steeped in everyday life. while galileo's
lyrics grapple with death and reincarnation, the subject is discussed in the
sort of straight-forward language you'd use when talking about the subject
at the pub. rather than getting bogged down in abstract discussion, they've
got a passion for people and life and a knack for capturing them in words
and music, which gives their songs vibrancy and depth.
"we write about the people we've come across, the experiences we have in our
own personal lives, we get moved by good films and books. i think of our
music as at least fairly universal, maybe not for people who are thinking
about surviving and their next meal, but for people who have the luxury of
examining their lives. i think we write about fairly universal topics - love
and loss and death and joy, those basic things."
"i can tell you that what goes on in the world affects us deeply. although
amy and i aren't specifically political songwriters, actually our songs have
this sorta socially-conscious element to them, and that just comes from
thinking about what's going on around us in the world.
"even if you can't relate to them specifically, you can appreciate them for
what they are, and the thoughts and the heart that goes into those thoughts.
i like rap music a lot, and i can't relate to it through experience but i
can completely appreciate the sentiment and the passion, so hopefully it
works both ways."
we talk generally about hiphop, its incredible vitality as a living artform
and it's occasional tendency towards homophobia and sexism.
"i hate that part of rap music and the's a lot of rap music that's
misogynistic, but there's a lot of white boy rock 'n roll that's
misogynistic and they don't get the bad rap, which is not to excuse it. but
then you have artists like queen latifah, who's right now my favourite rap
artist - she's completely positive and very good for women. she can hang
with the best of them. that's the kind of rap music that i love."
"i think that a lot of white people are threatened by rap music and black
culture and it's easy for them to single that out, but like i say, you can't
excuse that. there are lyrics in rap music that completely offend me, but
then public enemy are like the bob dylan for black urban communities."
perhaps, i suggest, those people who feel threatened by black culture should
look at what's happened in south africa. while that country faces immense
social and political problems, the transition to an anc-led government has
been far less bloody and violent than many predicted.
"yeah, i'm overwhelmed by what's happened. the fact that mandela was in
prison so recently and now he's the president. i mean, you can't idealise
that situation too much because there's been bloodshed and there'll probably
be more, and then you look at what's happening in central africa...but you
have to take hope from what's happening in south africa, and i feel
symbolically that it's the greatest event of the century."
our chat rambles for a while longer, and eventually the conversation returns
to music. a few years back, the indigo girls did a cover version of dire
straits' romeo and juliet, giving it some of the raucous passion you might
expect from a teenager shouting up to his girlfriend's window. and just
before their demise, the wonder stuff recorded the indigo girls' first
classic song, closer to fine.
"i think the reason why you want to do a cover song is that you love that
song so much, and the best thing that can come out of it is you doing an
original version of it. amy sang that dire straits song, she sang it so
different to mark knoppfler. and the wonder stuff, it's totally flattering
that they covered our song."
"you sing a song because you love it and hopefully you add somthing new to
it. i don't like cover songs that just do the same thing that the original
song did."
with the release of their new album, swamp ophelia, the indigo girls are
about to embark on their first australian tour. it's something emily says
they've always wanted to do.
"i think you'll find a very unpretentious and...we like to call it a
hootenanny over here in the states," she says of their live show. "in
england that bugs the shit out of them, but i think we'll find a warmer
response in australia. i think it's a friendly show. our songs are serious
but ther's an element of joy that runs throughout the show and we always
encourage people to sing songs if they know the words and we try to break
down barriers between the big old stage and the people on the floor and i
think it's a good exchange."
the indigo girls sometimes tour as a duo, and sometimes with a band.
"each has its own challenges and its own rewards, as you might imagine. when
amy and i play together, i find the shows tend to be a little more
spontaneous and our tempos and arrangements can fluctuate, whereas when you
play with a band you sorta have to keep in mind what the other folks are
playing. on the other hand, there are certain songs that are driven by a
great rhythm section and don't have the same power without it."
one of the first things you notice about the indigo girls is their
effortless vocal blend. their harmonies are so well-blended that it sounds
like a single voice singing two notes.
"it's actually something that came really easily to us, from the very first
time we played together. we were friends in high school, we both played
guitar. it was just like any two people who have something in common. we
started playing these songs and harmonies always came naturally. our whole
experience together has been very not-thought-about, and it still feels the
same to me ten years later."
are you surprised that the indigo girls are still going after so long? "i'm
totally surprised," she chuckles. "i'm completely thankful for it. i'm
laughing because i'm thinking about the days when amy and i used to call up
radio stations in the united states and beg them to play our records, and
beg clubs to give us gigs. a lot of times you'd drive for ten hours to play
for nothing - we just loved playing. and the fact that i'm sitting here
talking to someone in australia who's asking about our music is
overwhelming. i never forget those things, so it makes me laugh."

hello! i found a great list on epic/sony's site....
http://www.sony.dreammedia.com/epic/tourbyartist.qry?artistid=83
that sould get you directly there. right now it says that they are doing
a "demo tour"... which i assume is a pre-cursor to a "real" tour (meaning
a new album is comming????!!!!).
good luck!

two things...
this weekend i picked up the aug 1996 issue of ice, a cd release
newsletter. inside the front cover is a fairly detaiiled article about
the making of the "honor" cd which is being released by daemon/epic
on aug 20. amy ray talks abut the making of the album and gives a
bit of response about each track in the 2 disc set. about the ig
track, blood quantum: ...which marks the first time the dup has
composed a song together. "i started a song that i couldnt finish,
so emily did."
and perry at rdr has asked me to pass along that the last batch of 20
copies of the ep and more bootleg cd will be in this week. once they
are gone, they are gone. tehre will be no more. teh cover on the cd
will be slightly differnt to distinguish it as the last batch. he also
wanted me to pass along that volume two is in the works and will be
a cheaper cd, mass produced and not cd-r format. more details when
they are available.... his number again is 1-800-636-6166.

i think it is too funny that stairway to heaven, sweet home alabama, and
freebird all got mentioned because the medly of these three songs would
be my favorite ig boot moment, if the songs weren't all but obscured by
the crowd yelling like crazy. of course, if i had been there, i'd have
been yelling like crazy too.

want to hear, including this 10th ave freezeout, and glory days.

subject: the farmer's new rooster
x-uidl: 27e0f6e052194560fe0de8c5f9b5038b
x-mozilla-status: 0001
an old farmer decided it was time to get a new rooster for his
hens. the current rooster was still doing an okay job, but he was
getting on in years. and the farmer figured getting a new rooster
couldn't hurt anything.
so he buys a young cock from the local rooster emporium, and
turns him loose in the barn yard. well, the old rooster sees the
young one strutting around and he gets a little worried. so, they're
trying to replace me, thinks the old rooster. i've got to do something
about this.
he walks up to the new bird and says, "so you're the new stud in town?
i bet you really think you're hot stuff, don't you? well i'm not ready for
the
chopping block yet. i'll bet i'm still the better bird. and to prove it, i
challenge you to a race around that hen house over there. we'll run
around it ten times and whoever finishes first gets to have all the hens
for himself."
well, the young rooster was a proud sort, and he definitely thought
he was more than a match for the old guy. "you're on," said the
young rooster. "and since i know i'm so great, i'll even give you a
head start of half a lap. i'll still win easy," said the young rooster.
so the two roosters go over to the hen house to start the race
with all the hens gathering around to watch. the race begins and all
the hens start cheering the roosters on. after the first lap, the old
rooster is still maintaining his lead. after the second lap, the old
guy's lead has slipped a little but he's still hanging in there.
unfortunately the old rooster's lead continues to slip each time
around, and by the fifth lap he's just barely in front of the
young rooster.
by now the farmer has heard all the commotion. he runs into the
house, gets his shotgun, and runs out to the barn yard figuring a
fox or something is after his chickens. when he gets there, he sees
the two roosters running around the hen house, with the old rooster
still slightly in the lead. he immediately takes his shotgun, aims, fires,
and blows the young rooster away.
as he walks slowly away, he says to himself ........ "damn,
that's the third gay rooster i've bought this month."

subject: ig in public, t-shirts, hell freezes over, and ... that's it
i just had to share the following tidbits...
first of all, radio stations around here seem pretty eager to broadcast
the ig -- at least when it comes to their warmer, fuzzier, less challenging
works. sitting on a bus going through providence, ri i plugged my headphones
into the seat-mounted radio tuner and lo and behold, some random station
was playing p^2. it brought a ray of light into an otherwise drab day.
and just this morning, i was walking down the street through the middle
of my temporary home, woods hole, ma (crawling in the hole?), and suddenly
i heard "and so we're okay, we're fine..." wafting out the open door of a
local cafe. it was just the thing to hear after having spent the morning
alone in an office with no windows except for micro$oft's. but i was on my
way to somewhere, so i couldn't stay for the rest of the song...
(and yes, i know that was an old thread....)
second, i wish i hadn't been stoopid enuff to give rob my home address
instead of my summer address. i have to wait till *september* to get my list
t-shirt! aaaaghhh!!!!!!!!!!!! <kirsten's primal scream shatters the
computer monitor. those around her stare. she slinks away in disgrace.)
third, there are many songs that the ig would never do, but the songs that
they would never ever ever ever do are:
* house of love, amy grant
* all i wanna do, sheryl crow
* iiiiiiiiiii willlll allllllwaaays loooove youuuuuuu, whitney houston
my ears sting just thinking of it. bring on the hot caramel!
i would love nothing more that to hear emily sing "every little thing s/he
does is magic", though. okay, there are a few things i would love more.
but not very many.
fourth, have we all moved towards discussion of *horrid* songs and away
from the sotw? last time i noticed it, we were talking about mystery...
come back, sotw, come back! shouldn't it be ttr just about now? now *there's*
a song you wouldn't here on the radio...

t-shirt at the post office

hey, y'all...with all the talk about cover songs, i've been thinking (oh,
no!) that it would be nice to do another compilation of ig covers. the first
one was great, and there are many more covers that could fill up another
tape. here's my list so far (btw, they would all be live):
wild horses
thin line (not 1200 c's version)
another on the rise
white house blues
don't think twice
get together
uncle john's band
all along the watchtower
romeo and juliet
heartache central (who wrote this, amyray?)
same lost tribe
killing time
love the one you're with
big yellow taxi (hash)
levon (hash)
keep on growin' (hash)
danny's song
please let me know what you think of this idea, and i welcome suggestions for
more
covers...i have all of the above songs, but i'd like to know what other
covers exist in
indigo land. thanks! =)
peace, love, and happiness,

in readers digest. a daughter wrote in about her father that he was an art
historian, and was absent minded. he went to the bookstore and bought a book
on art. he took it home and sat down to read it, only to discover that he
had written it.

imo, i think the girls _should_ do some milli vanilli or some motley crue...
change of pace, you know... they have already recorded the lamest song in
history. the title escapes me, but it is that one about the bird in the old
gum tree or whatever... i hate that song more than anything and yes, our
precious girls did it... it's especially bad when amy does that "chatter,
chirp!" part. it makes me want to cry. so i believe that nothing would be
as bad as that.
btw, i think a truly good cover would be "queer" by garbage which is so damn
cool and on my cd player right now.
so once again i am going to go lurk... buhbye.

subject: gay census
sorry for the mass mailing, but before you get annoyed, read on. . . this
could have just been an electronic forward, but i'm taking to time to type
this, so please take the time to think about it and think about responding:
when i was in columbus i had "gay" long distance (what is that? a long
distance carrier that sleeps with another long distance carrier of the same
sex?) through this company overlooked opinions, which had low rates, gave a
portion of their monies to different activist groups and charities (not all
gay related, but many with a gay-les or hiv/aids focus), but it additionally
functioned as a census-taking group as well, and in a time when there is some
debate about how many people in this country harbor and might even act on
same-sex desire (10%? 2%) it is an important issue and not one that has been
addressed by a particularly gay-friendly or frankly fair service in the last
50 years or so. in a supposedly democratic society it shouldn't matter, but
some people (even legislators coming to a town near you) think a democracy
means majority rule--so it's obvious that acting on two fronts (okay, more
than 2) is important: voting in representatives who remember that the
population is comprised of more than one group (even though that group
doesn't *really* exist anyway, but that's another story) and that all
segments of the population no matter how they are defined, or define
themselves, should be respected and treated fairly <--- that was one.
another way we might make a difference is by participating in the kind of
census/survey that overlooked opinions is offering as a way of counting
queers in this country. they have a toll-free number you can call and all
you need is 10-minutes and a touchtone phone--you can call it 24 hrs a day
because it's all done via an interactive recording (press one, press two,
press any key). the questions cover discrimination, hiv/aids, relationships,
consumer behavior, household demographics, reading habits, etc. i don't
think this is the best way to enact a census, and i had problems with some of
the questions and the wording, but it's a nice start. check it out, one of
the questions asks you to describe your own sexual orientation and one of the
possible answers is "straight" (other possible answers are "gay" or
"homosexual," which i thought was interesting), so the census is also
counting the gay-les-bi friendly as well: i.e. you don't have to be gay or
even bi to participate, but nobody's perfect.
anyway, i thought it was fun, and even if you think these kinds of things are
stupid, check it out--it's a free fucking call. oh, yeah, and feel free to
bounce this note to anyone you like, or just pass the number on verbally.

here i go again....i know it's probably a crapshoot but, why don't you all whip
out your crayons and glitter and such and do a page for the scrapbook, anything
you want, and i'll take it to newport and/or hampton beach with me (surely
between the two places i'll find some way to get it to the girls)
if you wanna do a page, get it to me by
august 8th. email me for my address.
in other news....would those who want to volunteer copies of their ksca cd
please email me again? i'm a gunna set up a tree now that it is sold out for

"why should i care?" you ask. well, it is a listing of all my bootlegs.
if you see something you'd like, drop me a line and we'll work out a trade.
warning: this page was designed for netscape 2.0 if you are not currently
using the latest version of netscape you cannot see the cool computer
animation my girlfriend did for the "trading bee" and my motorcycle. the
pictures will be there, but they wont move across the page like they're
supposed to. (you can download the 2.0 version of netscape for free off
the net).
second, i will be going to the las cruces, santa fe, and mesa shows
and i will be wearing my list shirt to all the concerts. i hope y'all will
come up to the front of the line and say "hi". i'm gonna have one smelly

get boots of all three shows which will be added to my page and offered for

a free fucking call?
sure that's not 1-*900*-429-8642? ;-)
on a serious note, though, the data gleaned from surveys like this one has
been used by religious-right types to discredit the gay rights movement...
for example, "if gays and lesbians have an average income of <a number higher
than the average, which i have forgotten>, then how can they be an oppressed
group?". of course, it's a ridiculous question, because such surveys are
totally unscientific (but then, who said the religious right was scientific?)

jean,
actually i started a project like this about 4 or 5 months ago... =
however, i , being the king of procrastination, have not yet finished =
the project.
what i was doing was asking folks to submit about 10 - 15 minutes of =
original material to me. i am going to compile all submitted material =
onto one or two 90 minute tapes and then make copies and send 'em out =
to all the participants.
so, far i have only received about 6 or 7 tapes. the procrastination =
comes in on my part, i haven't recorded my songs yet.... hopefully next =
weekend (aug 10)....
please, if anyone, else is interested in participating, contact me and i =
will give you details.
peace,
dan
ok, i've come up w/ an idea. i don't know if it's been done yet but i'm =
sure
you'll let me know. i am sure that there are a lot of musicians/writers =
on
this list. i know that there was a tape made of listees doing ig songs, =
but i
thought it would be cool to make a "greatest hits" tape of listees =
original
songs.all listees w/ original songs could mail me what they consider =
their
best song & i'd make a compilation tape.i think it would be real =
interesting
to hear our fellow ig fans' original songs.any one interested please =
e-mail
me & i'll see if i can make this happen.
thanks for reading,
please give me feedback on this idea
jean

after careful consideration and some terribly frightening trips down memory
lane, i've come to the conclusion that a hot caramel enema would indeed be
much more preferable than having to listen to a and e croon:
"i've never been to me," by charlene.
yes, the absolute worst song ever! (i hope someone agrees with me here.)

subject: olympics, possible ig concert
hi y'all,
i just got back from a long trip to atlanta for the olympics and had
an awesome time. the games are going great so far, save for the
idiot that bombed centennial park. a lot of stuff was going on
musically too. i saw michelle malone at eddies attic - shye was
great. i though i taped the show but i forgot to shut the speakers
off my recorder. i did see and tape wendy bucklew. she is truly
talented.
i also got a chance to check out all the gay stores (outwrite, charis,
brushstrokes) and visit the g & l visitor's center. it was
interesting to see atlanta's g & l history pre - 40's to the present.
it actually is very similar to ny, which surprised me. anyway,
atlanta is a hot town, and y'all should check it out sometime.
most important - ig may be performing at the closing ceremonies in
decatur square on aug 4 in the evening (probably after 8 pm). there
will be a whole lineup of folks that day. this is part of decatur's
focus on festival. i wish i can go but i couldn't afford to stay any
longer. decatur square is right in the heart of decatur and right
outside of the marta (train) station in decatur. i think the show is
free.
hope some people can make the show and possibly tape it.
take care,
donna

subject: ig at waffle house
hi all!
well, i know that waffle houses are only in the east and south
part of the us, but i thought it was significant enough to mention. if
you don't know what waffle house is, it is a very small, yellow and
black building that is open 24/7/365 and has the *best* waffles on
the planet. amyray, i was there the other night (enjoying a superb
waffle) when i was in the mood for some tunes. (every waffle house has
a jukebox, complete with their own songs about waffle house, like the
waffle do-wop and why would you eat your grits anyplace else? ans
*many* more) right there next to the awesome waffle house tunes was
least complicated and closer to fine!!! now some might be offended by
this, i however, was extatic. so if there is a waffle house near you,
run over, enjoy a waffle, and after the waffle do-wop, enjoy some
ig!!!

hey all. i wonder if y'all would be willing to help me out. ya see, i'm

into a song for our wedding. any thoughts? please help, i know all of
you in ig-land are super creative and musical and all that stuff. and

think it would be a nice surprise for my guy on our day.
thanks bunches and kisses to you all (extra ones for kim, who's being
