i have a question for anyone who knows the hampton beach area and i'm sorry
to have to post this to the list. can anyone please tell me what kind of an
area this venue is in -- we may have to bring our dog to the this show and
leave him in the car at showtime and i needed to know how safe an area it is.

dear listies-
here is an interesting story that i just read. it sorta makes you think
about life and stuff. hope you like it! -- rob

the station

        tucked away in our subconscious is an idyllic vision.  we see
ourselves on a long trip that spans the continent.  we are travelling by
train.  out the windows, we drink in the passing scene of cars on nearby
highways, of children waving at a crossing, of cattle grazing on a distant
hillside, of smoke pouring from a power plant, of row upon row of corn and
wheat, of flatlands and valleys, of mountains and rolling hillsides, of city
skylines and village halls.
        but uppermost in our minds is the final destination. on a certain
day at a certain hour, we will pull into the station.  bands will be playing
and flags waving.  once we get there, so many wonderful dreams will come
true and the pieces of our lives will fit together like a completed jigsaw
puzzle.  how restlessly we pace the aisles, damning the minutes for
loitering--waiting, waiting, waiting for the station.
        "when we reach the station that will be it!" we cry.  "when i'm 18."
"when i buy a new 450sl mercedes benz!"  "when i put the last kid through
college."  "when i have paid off the mortgage!"  "when i get a promotion."
"when i reach the age of retirement, i shall live happily ever after!"
        sooner or later, we must realize there is no station, no one place
to arrive at once and for all.  the true joy of life is the trip.  the
station is only a dream.  it constantly out-distances us.
        "relish the moment" is a good motto, especially when coupled with
psalm 118:24: "this is the day the lord hath made; we will rejoice and be
glad in it."  it isn't the burdens of today that drive men mad.  it is the
regrets over yesterday and the fear of tomorrow.  regret and fear are the
twin theives who rob us of today.
        so stop pacing the aisles and counting the miles.  instead, climb
more mountains, eat more ice cream, go barefoot more often, swim more
rivers, watch more sunsets, laugh more, cry less.  life must be lived as we
go along. the station will come soon enough.

just wanted to let you all know that sarah is at least well. the boy that
was with her brother called a mutual friend to let her know that they were
all ok. that's all i have for now.

i had the wonderful privilege of going to the opening rounds of men's
gymnastics on saturday july 20 at 9:15 am.
and i was lucky enough to get home by 3 pm and watch it live on n.b.c.!!!!!

i just got off the phone with the folks at the hampton beach ballroom
[that's (603) 929-4100].

as we knew the venue is caberet seating. it is not possible to
reserve a table unless you choose to become a vip member -- that would
be $150 for 2 seats. often times caberet places will let you reserve
if you are also coming early for dinner -- no such luck this time.
dinner is not being served at all, just drinks and bar food.

this begs the question, if its general admission -- what time do i
rush the stage? doors open at 7pm, the show starts at 9pm. now i
don't know if that means the opening (and rumor has it that is michele
malone *bounce*) starts at 9, or the girls do (probably the former).
the person i talked to seems to think the show will be over ~midnight.

  a hampton beach vetran once mentioned that it could be fun to hang
on the beach for a while in the afternoon, then work our way over to
the show. especially if folks are coming up as part of their newport
trip --- makes a nice capper to a vacation, don'tcha think.  i may be
able to do that if i can convince one of the folks in my group (are you
listening stef?) to only work a half day on monday....  i'll bring a
frisbee, who's got the volleyball?

the backstage pass, we bow down to you!), kate, bertin lefkovic, elizabeth,
lorinda wright, yen, phil norman, i-girl, dwayne jarrell, deb reiser, greg
flamer, howdy barlow, wendy palmquist, and....oh yeah, me and susan
hetherington, and chris becker and some of his pals....

all told, that's about 35 of us and other so's and friends. i know there are
more going who just didn't contact me or put it in a "cryptic posting" to the
list!!!

anyhoo, here's my thoughts on meeting up to do this big race for the gate on
sunday. anyone who is interested in doing this, there will be a sign up in the
bw lobby for a meeting on saturday at some point, or else a point of departure
meeting at the butt-crack of dawn on sunday. i am volunteering to do the sign
thingy once i get to newport and get a better feel for the bw and how we are
set up in there... having never been there, it's hard to suggest a meeting
place. seems like if we can, we should actually meet at the fest on saturday,
maybe between sets (if there is time) in a fairly easy to find area like the
aforementioned portapotties (ewwww, groty!). at any rate, i'll throw up some
signage when we get to newport friday night and then we'll figure it out from
there.

confusing? probally (as we say in indiana), but we'll get it together. even if
you feel like a goober, wear your shirt so you can be spotted! maybe some of
y'all are shy about saying "hey you! ig list person!!!" but this gal ain't :)

i like the idea of hanging out on the beach, but right now i feel like a bit
of a moron.
    i called russell carter's office this morning, i have met amy and emily
a few times and amy told me (more than once) if i ever wanted to get on the
guest list to simply call -- she would remember. i almost got up the courage
for great woods but the friend i was supposed to go with was in a nearly
life ending car crash (her sister did die) and was unable to talk. i felt
lousy for going ,let alone trying to meeyt them.  i never called. then i saw
them in portland in dec. '94, talked to scooter (the lighting guy and jimmy
who said to ask after show -- met up with long lost friends, stopped by a
bar after the show and didnt really feel the need to bother them, altho amy
did see me in the crowd, was playing solos right at me...smiling, the works.
she even remembered the show when i saw her in dartmorth. i did not want to
make a big deal about trying to meet them, though dartmorth was waaay
relaxed (they actually were on the side of the stage before they went on and
amy and i talked) emily was really bummed when security asked me to stop
dancing during "power of two" and after the show, amy gave me a big hug,
told me to have a safe trip home and "call if i want to get on a guest list"
    now, to me, calling takes all the fun out of it. i like the bit of
fandom and worship that goes along with hanging out by the buses. you really
meet cool people there. you meet record execs in backstage areas. but i am
bringing a friend who is a theater professional (he hung out with dylan for
two days and thought nothing of it.) i know he hates the groupie attitude so
i did call.
     how do you explain to a secretary who "mike from maine who likes to
dance and they did ghost for his best friend @ the unh show and snuck into a
soundcheck at bates college" is? i doubt amy would remember my last name if
i bet a million dollars on it. but i do know she would recognize my face at
a club or something...does this make any sense, i am not trying to say i am
"close personal friends" but like a fan who would like to show amy and emily
some poetry, since he has met them before. heaven forbid if i could ask amy
or emily "since i'm going to atlanta on thursday, what is one place i should
visit?"
    i also do have relationships with other celebs, whether they are on the
same platitude as the ig, depends on which population you ask.  no one
probably cares that i can call a dateline correspondent and he'll talk and
his book changed my life so i wrote about him big time in my thesis, but i
know when i went to my camp for people with disabilities, it was like "wow
you know john hockenberry? he is like really awesome..." i also know bruce
hornsby, and i introduced him to a major deadhead friend of mine. it was
wierd that he thought it was such a major deal, i mean bruce is cool enough
to have passes waiting for me at shows and we can talk after the gig. i
think of him as a friend but also as a god of the piano. it intregues me how
i can be so relaxed about certain celebs and like be a drooling neurotic
(ok, i'm always a drroling neurotic, i have a mild case of cerebral palsy,
but trying to use the metaphor anyway) when meeting others. i certainly have
met my fair share for one reason or another.
if i sound like a pompous jerk who needs to throw the names of celebs
around, i am not trying to be. i will say that i am a guy who is panicking
about calling russell and just needed some place to vent as i am having a
really nervous day and i am trying to write a literature review due friday
for my practicum.
sorry this didn't have muuch to do with hampton beach...

i've been periodically checking web sites for an actual schedule for
bumbershoot, but haven't had a lot of luck finding an actual schedule. i'll
keep checking in, but in the meantime, maybe we can coordinate some sort of
effort to go see other shows in shifts or something.

how many people on are going to bumbershoot?

i'd hate to miss an entire day of the festivities waiting in line, but i also
want to see the girls (especially since they're trying out new material)! is
there a way we can meet and hold a spot in line with a reasonably sized group?
some of us could check out the daemon showcase while other hold their spots.
after the alloted time, we could trade and let others check out the other shows
at bumbershoot.

i wonder what amy and emily think of this? amy's hosting the daemon showcase
at the wild stage and i would guess that emily will want to be there to support
her friends. i'm guessing they would be uncomfortable with people not going to
see the daemon artists because they were waiting in line for an indigo girls
show or missing the ig show because they're really interested in the
opportunity to see michelle mallone and other daemon artists.

of course, this may all be a mute point if the daemon stuff is after the ig
concert! if the girls are really playing at 2:00 (i think someone mentioned
that) than it's very possible that we can all run over to the wild stage
afterwards.

actually dmb has already left the horde tour. i saw them in memphis on
july 18. they rocked. blues traveler is for the whole tour though.

i'll definitely be at bumbershoot!! i think it's a good idea to try and
have some people holding places in line while others are out and about.
has anyone tried calling the number listed on the bumbershoot web site for
more info on what time the wild stage showcase is taking place (or any
other shows for that matter)? i've looked everywhere i can think of and
haven't had any luck either.

anyway, i'd be interested in getting schedule info that anyone might have.
only eight days until i leave here!!

hi y'all,
i just spent 2 very enjoyable concerts with elaine, a listy from ca who
smartly wore her list shirt, and who will do anything for fashion ;) .
the first show was on sunday, over on bainbridge island, and jo and laura
sang bluegrass, backed up by ranch romance (even though they're officially
broken up), and also orville johnson.  then laura sang her own stuff, with
"hot-rod, lightnin'-rod, iditarrod cook" who is an awesome guitar player,
and julie wolf, who played, let's see, guitar, accordion, and tongue drum.
oh and, can't forget chis layton, the drummer!  everybody rocked, and we
got lots of pictures.  laura made lots of cracks about how windy it was,
like "did you see 'twister'?  me neither, i was just wondering if this is
how it started" as a tent blew by.
then yesterday we saw laura and "julie the big bad wolf" and rod and
chris again in downtown seattle at the harbor steps, which look right up at the
hammering man (huge black metal sculpture), whom laura kept putting into
her lyrics.  they played 1 song each from julie's and rod's cds, and 4 new
ones, promising a new record soon.  laura's (incredible) voice was back in
top form.  (at the 4th of july show she had been out of breath a lot,
didn't dance as much, didn't hold out her notes, sounded hoarse.)  both
shows were filled with jokes about the olympics.

all the ig concerts (but one apparantly, which i'm still working on) and
from all the stuff that's outside the tri-state area... anyhow, the actual

    second, my computer genius girlfriend has spent all day trying to
figure out how to hook up the sterio to her computer and 28.8 moden for the
real audio concert broadcast of ig on aug 22.  we're hoping to get it
recorded onto a cassette tape.  looks like she figured it out.  anyone else
out there trying to do this?

hi sarah :) i am going to bs (i live in bellingham, north of seattle). i
have a feeling a lot of ig fans will rush over to the wild stage after the
ig concert. even if they dont know about it beforehand i am sure amy will
mention it at the concert like "y'all come over to the wild stage blah
blah" and people will scramble over there even if they dont know who mm or
any of the daemon artists are (just on the chance amy and emily will join
them on stage, which is a pretty good chance!).

i am willing to bet the daemon showcase will be 1-2+ hours after the ig
show cause amy will want to be there since she is hosting it and she'll
want a little break after the ig concert is over to rest/eat/whatever.
this is just total speculation on my part though, maybe the bs organizers
arent taking the "amy as host" factor into consideration.

oh yeah, freaky happenings of the week: i was in seattle last week on
broadway and ran into some people who went to new orleans for the ig shows
(carolyn and miranda and... oh blush i forget her name.) and the friend i
was with ran into his aunt who he hadn't seen for 5 years (she didnt know
he was in town). :)

4 more days til nff!!!!!

the weather channel is calling for mid 70's and isolated storms on sat,
and sunny and 80's on sunday!!!!!! no rain like last year yeah!!!!!

since this is the projected forecast, i want some advice on the speed and
brand of film i should buy to take pictures with.  last year it was rainy
and cloudy and i used 400 speed which came out great.  should i stick
with it or use 200 speed since it should be sunny?  does it the speed make
a differnce when you are taking pictures up close or far away?  i want to
make sure that i get some great shots again.  thanks for any help on this.

hash is a side project/band that emily and some of her friends are in.  they
do some origional stuff, but mostly cover songs from what i have seen booted
so far.  they played in atlanta in the spring, and at atlanta pride.  they
are really cool and rock!  emily plays electric most of the time, does the
lead vocals and plays mostly rhythm mixed with some solos and leads.  it
is a really different side of emily, she was really rocking and bouncy when
the played, a lot more laid back and groovin' kind of playing then when she
plays as an ig.  i guess the fact that she has to be so focused on the
intircate guitar work of the ig stuff has a lot to do with it, since the
stuff hash plays is pretty fun and loose.  kind of a fun way to keep
jamming while ig were on break.  check a recording out if you can.
i booted the show at atlanta pride on 6-30-96, which contains hash, ig and
viva la diva.  if you missed the post about the tape tree let me know and
i can tell you who to get in touch with to get a copy.

is there anyone on this list that lives near denver? i have yet to figure that out!

most sound cards on pcs have a line-out jack. the jack itself is a
1/8" miniature stereo plug. what you will need is a cable to adapt the 1/8"
stereo plug to a pair of rca plugs for the line record inputs of your tape=
deck.

        that said i must admit this is the first i heard of a ra ig concert.
any more info or net-pointers??  the 22 would be the day after the san
antonio show.

the h.o.r.d.e. tour rolls into nashville this saturday and the lineup here is
blues traveler, lenny kravitz, rusted root, king crimson, son volt and
meshell ndegeochello (or however your spell it).  tickets are $27.50 plus
ticketmonster's "convenience" charge.  i really dig blues traveler and lenny
kravitz is pretty cool, but i don't want to go so bad that i'm willing to
spend 30 some odd bucks.  now if dave matthews band and natalie merchant
were gonna be on the bill too, i might consider plunking down a few of my
hard-earned dollar bills.  oh well, i guess it is not to be...  (dmb will
be playing here on september 11th, though)

this may be old news, but ig is playing dallas 8/22. a place called
the bronco bowl. i know someone who has tickets.

i also hear that ig may play a benefit for woody guthrie in
cleveland in late september...

another idea for what to do at hampton beach while waiting to see ig,
or what to do in the field/parking lot at newport while waiting for all
the traffic to subside: go fly a kite!

   i saw someone else flying at newport last year in the big field near
the entrance, and i flew mine briefly over the hill in one of the parking
lot fields.  if others have kites (or frisbees or whatever), we could
have a post-newport list meet in the big field near the concert entrance
gates (but far enough away from the crowd waiting for busses / water
taxis).  i'll be wearing my list shirt and flying an arrowhead shaped
2-string kite.  so stop by and say hi instead of fighting the traffic! :)

hey, i just got back from seeing joan down at pier 62--she was
awesome as always...can't say the same for the person who was
sitting near me who decided to sing along with every single
song joan sang--didn't know the words, didn't know any of the
melodies, and sang loud, loud, loud. sheesh.

as she was about to sing welcome me, she announced that dar
williams (miss dar, joan called her..), ig and herself would
be doing the alcatraz show (she said it was a show that her
sister's bread and roses organization does) and invited us all

is anyone besides me staying at the howard johnson's in middleton ri?
if so let me know, i would like to meet up.  i would also like to
meet the rest of you who are staying at various hotels and campgrounds
in the area.  i am leaving on friday at 10am, so i won't be able to
email the list with my room #, so if you want to get  in touch with me,

middleton/newport ri hotel.  the room is in my friend jean's name, but i
bet if you leave a message with her full name they will find us, it

i am not going to be able to make the hotel viking concert on friday
night, unless by some miracle i find an extra $20, so i am planning
on walking around newport.  last year my friends literally ran into
emily in town, i wasn't there, but i thought it was cool that she
was just hanging out in town like we were.  if anyone is interested
in getting together to walk around, go to dinner, or go to the only
gay bar in newport later friday or sat, let me know.  i'm sure there
are a lot of us who want to meet and hang out.  i am bringing my photo
albums from last years nff and atlanta pride, so if anyone has albums
and wants to bring them to show that would be cool.

my one dilema is whether or not to try to videotape the show.  i think i
am going to bring my camcorder saturday and see if i can tape ani, and
then decide if i want to tape the girls on sunday.  i kinda want to just
have fun and dance and sing and take regular photos, but i also want to
capture the show on film so i can re-live it whenever i want.  i guess
i will have to figure it out soon.

oh well, i have rambled enough, i should get packing so i won't be so
stressed out doing it tomorrow. i hope you all have safe trips!

ok, i know i may be overstepping my bounds here, but i have come up with the
following as far as times and locations for meeting to organize a feeble
attempt to creat order within chaos.  i am appointing myself and susan marine
as coordinators.  (susan, if you don't want that kind of burden on your
shoulders, let me know)  if there is anyone else that would like to help with
communication and coordiantion, let me know.  i would love to pass the buck
on this one, but i sort of feel like it's my baby.

the following are times that there will be net gatherings on saturday.  the
location will be the porta-potties that are lined up against the far right
hand wall (if you are facing the stage) of fort adams, facing the water.  i
will try to be there for all of these gatherings, but if not, one of the
co-coordinators will be there.  whoever is there will be carrying a sign that
says, indigo-girls@netspace.org.

on sunday, we will meet one hour before the park opens in the lobby of the

western 1-2 hours after the show is over on saturday night.  i hope to have a
more concrete time saturday afternoon.  this time is based upon the fact that
it usually takes about an hour to get out of the park area once the show is
over.  the saturday night gathering is purely social.  i hope to have all
arrangements made for sunday morning cleared by saturday afternoon.  once we
gather at the best western saturday night, we can decide if we want to go out
or hang out in someone's room or whatever.  if it seems like i am
over-micro-managing this thing, let me know.  i have yet to finish the
dilbert principle, thus i am still a partial induhvidual.  i look forward to
seeing y'all at newport.

hope everyone is well.  i made a last minute decision to fly to newport
tomorrow and was wondering if anyone had extra passes or tickets.  last i
heard it was sold out.  if anyone does, please mail me.  i'd really

oh, and last night i saw joan baez at the pier here in seattle.  she was
great, as always and i had wonderful reminiscent memories of new orleans.

last night i had my third, yes third, (aren't i lucky, my subconscious
loves me) indigo girls dream, so i thought i would share it with y'all!
and maybe someone will have some idea what this means.

a whole bunch of people, i don't know who they were, and i were in this
building that was sort of like a college dorm, with all these rooms going
off the main hall.  the ig were coming to play on this radio station that
was in the building.  i was sitting on a couch right outside the room where
they were playing, so they came in, i was excited, they went in the room
and were playing, i can't remember what, then all of a sudden (and this is
the fun part) i'm in the backseat of a car with emily!!!  i don't know what
happened to amy, nor do i know who was driving.  it was dark, and i think
we were in a forest. at least there were trees all around.  so emily and i
are flirting with each other like crazy (aren't i excited!!!)  she was sooo
cute! then she tells me she is going to tell me the politically correct
version of the three bears (as in goldilocks and the three bears)  i was of
course thrilled (the woman could be talking to me in greek, and i would
still be thrilled)  and i think she started telling me the story, but then
i woke up.  i immediately tried to go back to sleep and continue the dream,
but no such luck.

i really have no idea where the three bears came from.  i can't remember
the last time i thought about goldilocks and the three bears, and
especially the p.c. version of it.  very very strange.  i haven't yet been
able to come up with any good interpretations of it.  any thoughts?

here is the original message about the real audio ig concert. it first

   i, like some of the rest of y'all, am computer clueless.  i am smart
enough to ask my computer genius girlfriend, deb, for help.  8)  i think if
you go to the above address or type real audio into your search engine you
will find the sight. all i had to do was forward this message to deb and
she took care of everything.  the ig concert is not listed on this page
however.  don't know why.
    i think the biggest key is having the fastest modem available.  even
with a 28.8 bps modem the sound isn't the best.  it's not like a radio
broadcast and deb tells me that the more people who log on and listen to
the show, the lower the sound quality.  oh well.  ?   you can go to this
site now and hear archived concerts like one from the doobie brothers to
get an idea how the sound is.  deb also said they may have video clips of
the show sometime after the concert.
     to record the real audio concert:  deb says it will be different for
everybody's system.  she has a power mac and a 28.8 modem and my sony
sterio.
her hard drive has a sound output plug (like a speaker plug) she took a
single sterio plug wire (radio shack $3) and plugged one end into the
computer speaker plug and the other end of the line into the mic plug on
the sony sterio. then put the sterio on tape and push record.  and the
sound should come through and record and you can hear it coming through the
sony sterio speakers once you push record.  this prevents any outside noise
from being recorded onto the tape.
     warning:  first, real audio is like a single line, so only so many
connections can be made. the more people that log on the more demand is put
on that single line and the slower it moves trying to support all the
demand.  it's like any server, more people log on, the slower it moves.
all this depends on how the particular server is set up. second, this
increased demand can cause things to get backed up on themselves.  deb was
doing some sample recording yesterday, and one thing that happened was
increased demand caused things to move slower going out and then the next
stuff going out at a faster speed kinda runs over the slower stuff in front
and then it makes some kind of mess where you hear one song playing over
another.  i ain't no computer genius so all this second hand info may be a
bit confusing.  i don't understand what deb is talking about half the time.
sorry.  :(
     she was able to record some real audio things yesterday, but that
doesn't mean she can get the aug 22 concert for sure.  i guess it will all
depend on the problems stated above.  she's got it set up and we'll give it
a whirl and if i get a tape of this show i'll for sure let y'all know.

it sounds as if they won't be here until next summer.:((  i am very sad about
that.  definitely keep your ears open next summer.  red rocks is the most

i just wanted to wish all you fortunate ones who are going to nff a wonderful
time.  i hope you have as awesome a time in newport as i had in new orleans in
may.  what an incredible bonding experience that was.  if ig play nff, next year,

anyways, the wild stage thing w/ amy & daemon is sat. aug. 31 from

performers, and ticket prices, parking, and other good info...but it's
really long (a lot of info) so i wanted to ask y'all if you want me to
post it to the list. if only a couple people want it i'll just send in

hi all

i just checked the web page for concert dates and the new updated version
has the 9:30 club listed for aug. 18th. i called there yesterday and they
didn't have a clue, and neither did protix (silly people).

unfortunately, i leave for school a couple days before the show, and cannot
go. :(
but i thought i would share my findings for those in the northeast who can't
make any of the other dates. give detailed reports for those of us that
aren't lucky enough to be able to see them!

this may be too late for most people heading to newport, but i just wanted
to wish everyone a safe flight or drive and have a heck of a time in
newport.

i'm originally from the northeast and spent a summer in rhode island. it's
a nice typical new england-ish state.

for the ultimate tourist trap, you've got to catch the block island ferry
that goes from newport to block island. it's a 2 hour boat ride to a sweet
and peaceful island called block island.  the ferry is a passenger ferry
only, but you can rent mopeds or bikes once you get onto the island.  the
ferry is run by a company called interstate navigation - that i use to work
for.  i use to be the purser of that ferry and my husband was the engineer.
trust me, if you do go to block island, you'll truly enjoy yourself.
there's lots of great swimming to be had, the best fresh seafood, 2
historic lighthouses to tour, the quaintest bed and breakfasts/hotels, not
to mention the beauty of the island that can be seen via car/bike/moped or
by foot.  the trip is a bit $$$, but most things in newport are.  when we
worked there ( 7 years ago), you could catch the boat right by the nff at
fort adams at adams wharf.  don't know if they're still docking there, but
otherwise, the boat may be in downtown newport.

just thought i'd promote a gorgeous island that's worth the cash. enjoy
new england and enjoy the nff.

well, i checked out audionet, and i didn't see anything listed... however,

they didn't list past the fifteenth, so i don't think we aught to be
worried yet... what did occur to me though, was that if they archive their

concerts, it would be much bettter to wait for the archived version then
recieve the live feed. the live feed, in my experience, always has worse
sound quality than a prerecorded show, and, as an aside, this means that
y'all without access to a whatever to hear the thing will be able to...
but anyway, just thought i'd throw in a little something on the concert...

this is rather important, i need to try and meet up with jill and her friend
sue at hampton. i also know she will be @ newport, but i dont know if too
many list members know her personally. i am staying with her next weekend

i think i sent you incorrect information. sorry!

corrected:

after checking some christine lavin stuff, i have learned that julie gold
did write the song "from a distance" which bette midler sang and that won aa
grammy. perhaps people (like me) are confusing their bette midler songs and
who wrote them, hence the confusion over which one julie gold wrote.

i am curious now to know the definative answer on the authorship of this song
now. not because i am a fan of bette middler or really like either the song,
just idle curiosity....

yes, there is also shakespere significance.  ophelia was a young woman who
was in love with hamlet and kept trying to win his affection, but he was
obsessed with his father's murder and ignored her.  finally
grief-stricken, she drowned herself in a river.  there is an article on
the ig tezcat page (i think, or else the hidwater page?) that explains why
a&e used it.  sorta a mix of hamlet and the plant, they just thought it
was a cool name. (basically).

also there's the "taste of seattle" food fare (pricey but good), the 1
reel film festival (short films), art displays, folk arts, international
crafts, and most likely those unicycle juggler guys.  (always a hit)
**more important details**tickets- $9 advance/$10 at the gate for one day;
multi passes are $16/2 days or $29/4-day (only pre-purchase at pay less
drugs)  tickets are available in advance at ticketbastard or pay less;
they do not sell out, so you can bop on over to a payless on yer way to
the center.
transport/parking: the seattle center is located on queen anne hill, just
north of downtown.  parking sucks big green things.  the city bus offers a
bumbershoot shuttle from all over town, like at 15 minute intervals or
something, all day for all 4 days.  for you out-of-towners, you can call
metro when you get here at 553-3000 to get the bus schedule.
"festival entry does not guarantee concert seating!" <===mucho lines.

there is a hotline too; (206) 281-8111.  it might tell you what you can
bring in.  i think backpacks are usually okay, maybe searched.  drinking
water has been okay in the past, but food is not.  i think cameras are
fine, and stuff like that (but leave your ak-47 in the hotel) but you
don't want to pack too much in cause the center is a 74-acre park and
you'll do a lot of squishing through crowds.  no need for a chair; there
is no festival seating in any of the venues that i know of, and you can
park it on the lawn or on a bench unless it's raining (i'd do it anyway,
but i'm from these parts...)

i'd recommend instead putting the picture on a web site. pictures are
rather large to be send by email. you can just email people the url.
if you don't have access to a web server, i'd be happy to put the
picture on my server.

first of all, what kind of computer do you have and what format is the

i was ready to debate this point on ophelia and gertrude, and went back to
the source to check out the queen's alibies.  none at all, and she knew an
awful lot about how ophelia drowned.  her motive would be simple: she saw
hamlet kill polonius, ophelia's father, in cold blood and feared for her
life, so she sought to anger laertes, ophelia's brother, so they would
duel and hamlet would be killed.  the text implies that ophelia went mad
after hamlet killed polonius, and that is why she drowned...but all the
easier to kill, i guess.

just got back from a kewl mcc concert!!!!!! she announced that her new
album will be out on october 22nd. if you have a chance to see her, i
would definitely recommend the show!

since i promised to keep you all posted. here's the latest: one of the guys
that sarah was with (my oldest son, child from hell) was arrested in a
stolen car. he's in broward county jail for those of you familiar with
florida. which means he called for me to bail him out (i didn't) and he told
me the girls and the other guy were on the beach at the bahia cabanna hotel
in fort lauderdale, fl. we notified the fl police who would do nothing
because it is not against the law to run away in florida. even though there
is a question of abduction, sarah is still listed as a runaway. anyway, this
absolutely wonderful fbi agent that has been beyond helpful told us to go
immediately to the saugus police staion and file a chins (child in need of
services) warrant and they would be able to pick her up. well, an emergency
one of these had never beed done in ma, so it took lots of interaction from
the fbi , but we got it. it was faxed to the fort lauderdale police and they
said they would hold her so that we could come pick her up if they found
her. it doesn't look like they have much of a chance. that area is a mecca
for runaways. thousands of missing teens. so, i'm keeping my poster campaign
going and hoping that now that her brother was picked up, she'll try to
call. unfortunately the guy that they were left with is really bad news.
just got out of jail on weapons charges. what a mess! we were so hopeful
last night, but i guess having a warrant is pretty useless unless they catch
them. :( all of you who have us in your prayers, please keep at it. it's
greatly appreciated. and don't forget if you want a pic of sarah to
circulate, just email me and i'll email one to uou presonally. i have to
send them out seperately. too big for the list. and thanks for listening. i
don't know what i'd do without you all.

hello everyone.  i was wondering if anyone knows where to get a good ig
poster.   i really want one for next year but i can't seem to find one

hello everyone...

because i could not go to newport, i decided to take myself out to see the
new independent film "trainspotting". it was done by the same three who
put together "shallow grave". both movies are exceptional, and i
recommend them to all listers.

the question i have is (for those who have seen it):
do you think this movie glorifies the life of heroin addicts? those
critics who were stupid enough to rip on this movie said that this movie
will only encourage more of the slacker generation that heroin is where
it's at...

i whole-heartedly disagree...i don't want to go into anymore details until
i know that someone else out there has also seen it and wants to share
ideas about this twisted and haunting movie (or share thoughts about
shallow grave...)

in response to the question, "does the film trainspotting glorify the
lives of heroin addicts" i'd have to say, i think not...the film does an
incredible job of showing just what heroin is, and does...it's a rather
honest portrayal--it's a film that shows (heaven forbid) that drugs are
enjoyable and this is why people do them...i thought it was very well
done, it can in no way glorify heroin addiction...the scene in which
renton goes through the stages of withdrawl is proof enough that this is
not a pretty thing to deal with. so yes, it may make some people more
curious about the drug and apt to try it, but the majority, i think,
will be ultimately turned off by it...so, anyway, that's my little
schpeel about the film...btw, there is an incredible article on
trainspotting in september's issue of details, in case you're curious
...all for now, and continually hoping ig decides to play chicago...

my best friends live and work on a reservation not far from the hopi civic
center where ig recorded jonas & ezekial. they went to college with amy and

hey there..

since this venue seems to be awfully close to a beach (or so i've been
told) i think it would be neat for us early birds to meet up on the
beach and hang out until the concert. the weather ought to be perfect
for beaching all day, anyway.. :)

so the question is, to someone who knows the area: where exactly
should be set up camp on the beach? further, does anyone have
something visible (a big umbrella in a distintive pattern?) they can
use to mark us as new folks arrive? if noone has anything better, i
can bring a bunch of balloons.

whee!! and i'll be wearing my list shirt, of course.. :)

well, i am not going to make a *long* post, but i will say it was
a fabulous festival.  my highlights:  friday nights "on a summer's
night show", joan aramtrading on sat, and of course ig on sunday.
ig played a loty of new songs, many of which have been discussed
here:  chiapas bound, get out the map, dont give that girl a gun,
shame on you, it's alright..a couple of others.  emily played a
solo song on the piano.  it was a very soft ballad (which she
to restart..."fuck i messed up,  gotta start again")  i couldnt
understand a lot of the lyrics but it sounds great.  they were in fine form,
very happy to be playing again.  sara lee and jerry played with them,
and they were joined by michelle malone for some songs.  michelle did one
of here own, dont know what is called.  seh played an incredible solo
on electric in "down by the river".  one lucky fan/list member (i'll
let her tell her story) joined ig on stage for closer to fine.
didnt hear a release date for the new album, but i did hear amy say it would
be called "map".  i have to say i was very impressed with the new
material.  i know other will fill in other details.  i'm tired and
my feet hurt, so i am going to bed. i'll see some of you in hampton
beach.

i saw tons of you list people running around in the shirts! i spoke
to a few people, but i couldn't get to any gatherings in newport since my
campground was pretty far away.

        they played a lot of new stuff.  emily had one song at the piano
with voice, solo.  it was beautiful and sad.  michelle malone played with
them on a few songs.  my mind is filled with so much... it's been a crazy
couple of days.  all the new songs were incredible.  i'm sure whoever taped
it wants to transcribe lyrics and trade tapes, eh?  (hint hint ;)  there
were so many new songs!  :) !  released stuff, they played least
complicated, galileo, closer to fine, tried to be true, bury my heart at
wounded knee, and down by the river.

        their set started at 5:30 or so, and it ended at about 7:20, to give
you guys a sense of our experience, and let you guess how much time was
taken up by the cooooooool new stuff.  amy was wearing a navy t-shirt with
writing i didn't read and tight white pants.  emily looked like she does in
the 1200 curfews cd with a similar baggy shirt and a smile.  my friend saw
emily during the day sunday, and amy was visible watching ani difranco from
backstage on saturday.

        the new stuff included some non-g rated language here and there, and
officially out of the closet lyrics.  someone who taped can elaborate on
these silly observations.  forgive me everyone, but i must get some sleep.
a couple hours sleeping in a tent didn't do it for me this weekend.

        i didn't like the newport atmosphere as much as the smaller folk
festivals.  i'd never been before.  i couldn't miss seeing amy and emily
though.  it had been far too long since i'd last seen them live.

how were the list gatherings? what did everyone else think?

stage setup. they opened with least complicated (sorry, i didn'ty write down
the setlist...i'm gonna wing it) and then launched into their new stuff...

amy was wearing jeans, black tshirt, blck boots....emily was wearing whitish
shorts, a greyish shrit, and these funkeeee blue boots that looked like the
kinds boxers wear. they seemed to be in a jovial mood, cracking small jokes
here and there and making small talk with the crowd.

as i mentioned, they did play all of their new stuff (chiapas, shame on you,
get out the map, and a few others which i had think were brand-spanking new).
they also played "i don't wanna know" with mm and "tried to be true" (haven't
heard that one in eons live, yyyyeeeeessssss!). i wish i had time to go into
the fuckinawesomeness of the whole set but i have to run to a meeting so i'll
let some other new englander pick up where i left off....i'm headed to hampton
beach ina few hours...more tomorrow!!!

anyway, i was in a store this weekend and saw something interesting--a
"collector's edition" of the ig cd...it was 24k gold, and it was in
different packaging, but other than that the tracks were the same etc.
okay, what is up?  it was $15 more than the regular ig cd!  what is the
advantage of having this?  is it new?  do they do it for other groups?  is
it a shameless ploy by the record co's to make more money (dumb question)?
this isn't the same thing as the enhanced cd's y'all were talkin 'bout  a
few weeks ago, is it?   have i been living under a rock for not knowing
this?  do i ask too many questions?

well y'all,

     that bootleg compilation tape i was talking about putting together as
my own personal version of 1200 curfews is finally done.  it's called no
curfews.  i got the idea one day when i was throwing a pot (as in pottery,
not violence) and listening to a new tape i had just gotten in a trade.  it
was this version of amy doing squeaky fromme.  and it, like much of their
music, is like a giant hand that reaches down into my throat and grabs my
heart and pulls it out and holds it out in front of me, beating!  this
intense, raw emotion is the stuff of life.  so this tape is comprised of
those  live versions that really grabbed me, for whatever reason.  if
enough people are interested, i could set up a tape tree.  so, let me know
by private e-mail if you'd be interested in a copy of this tape and/or
being a branch on the tape tree.

hey folks,

well, i'm sunburned but i had a great time! i got to meet about 10
list people or so and i finally have some faces to put with the
addresses =)

  as for the festival -- wonderful!  i was dissapointed i wasn't able
to get one of the limited editions of the program (for those who
weren't there, they realeased a version of the program with two cd's
-- a folk sampler and a 3 song ig disk, however all the tracks were
availiable on 1200 curfews so it wasn't a huge deal).  kim and i went
to claim territory and by the time i went back to the tent they were
sold out.  supposedly, there were only 500...

but that was the only downer really.  the surprise find of the show
had to be moxy fruvous who went on first thing sunday morning.  they
got the crowd singing and dancing right off the bat.  the hmv tent was
swarmed after their set.  they must have sold out in 20 minutes....
susanne vega killed as well.  i heard the set, but didn't see it -- i
was doing the list meet thing.  the girls rocked too, but everone else
seems to be saying what i want to say so i won't repeat it other to
say me too.  "shame on you" is awesome and i loved em's song on the
piano about friends taking off from airports -- it was really sad
though "and for wach plane that takes off, there is someone who will
never see someone again" -- or something like that.  a&e went on to
talk about touring and the year off:

        a:  you get this year off, but then you realize you spend all

ani's set was good, but i would have changed her song selection. i
was left non-plussed by michelle shocked. sure she's talented, but
her set basically consited of telling gatemouth brown what to play.
to be fair, there were extenuating circumstances -- her band was
stranded in new york.

anyway, *waves* and hellos to the folks i met, and everyone else
too. hampton beach tonight!!!!!

the baby tour took an unexpected, and quite delightful, turn yesterday as
at the last minute we got to go to newport!!!!!!!!

my wife and i found out saturday night that we would be able to go, so we
packed up everything had headed south.  my daughter, who is now
officially one, her first birthday was last week,  had one of the best
days of her life.  she was awake the whole day and did not stop smiling
or laughing once.  by the end of the day she could barely keep her eyes
open becasue she was so exhausted, but she was still smiling.

it was a really great day.  i mean really, really great.   unfortunately,
becasue we didn't know until we were going til the last minute and we got
there late (not til half way through the first act) we weren't able to
meet up with the group, though chris becker stopped by to say hi and i'm
sure i must have met others of you without knowing it.   i was the guy
with the beard who was walking around with the blonde one year old who
was laughing and smiling for 7 straight hours.  we met and saw so many
people who just filled her with sheer delight.

anyway, some thoughts:

i'll let other people talk more about the music itself because we were
further back and we were kind of distracted in the middle of the set,
but the music was awsome. as for other performers, we liked gatemouth
brown the best of the others to perform on sunday, but before ig came on
we didn't pay that much attention to the music.

the highlights of the non-new material, imho,  were an incredible down by
the river and wild horses, both of which featured michelle malone.  this
is the first time i've seen her play with ig and i must say, anyone who
has been harbouring thoughts that sarah is a lttle overboard with her
devotion to michelle is maistaken.  she was incredible on both songs!

also, whoever it was who got to sing on closer to fine was great! not
just the singing, but the dancing too! : ) with all the talk that
there has been about if ctf could become stale, this time it certainly
wasn't.

of the new songs i liked chippas bound, shame on you, and it's alright
the best. i think they are all great. it's alright got the biggest
crowd response of the new material, at least of the people around where i
was. i totally missed emily's piano song and kind friend.

my daughters favorite song, by a mile, was bury my heart at wounded knee.
she was so tired she looked like she was going to fall asleep by the
third song. she sat mesmerized through all of wild horses. then bury my
heart came on and she just lit up. she danced and laughed through the
whole song and was ecstatic by the end.

we had such a great day becasue the crowd was really wonderful.  i spent
about half the day walking around the park with my daughter and we made
friends everywhere we went.   everywhere we went, people were just so
nice and open with us and doing things to make my daughter laugh, even
when she wandered into other people's camp areas, uninvited, it was
great.  after bury my heart, she wandered into a group of women who were
so funny with her that she was laughing hysterically through the who
middle of the section of the show.  i was worried that emily was going to
tell us to quiet down from the stage since we were making such a ruckus
during the quiet songs.

anyway, sorry if this is a bit long winded and gushy. the unfortunate
part is that after not sleeping all week becasue of work,
i had to stay up til 4:00 am this morning after getting back from the
show to do the work i should have been doing during the day.
i can barely see straight as i type this, so i apologise for any typos.
it was definately worth it.

hey y'all,

   well, the response to my "no curfews" compilation tape has been
incredible. what i need to do now is get tape tree volunteers.  if you can
and are willing to dub this tape for 10-20 people let me know.  tape tree
volunteers can send me a blank 90 min tape and a sase for their copy and
i'll make up 20 inserts for each volunteer and mail them back with their
tape.  the insert isn't anything fancy, just something i can print on my
printer and xerox 4 per page (something like the red light cafe insert).
     my next project is a video tape compilation.  i've already started
making a list of stuff to go on this.  i'm hoping to make a 4 hour tape or
so.  i've got roughly 30 hours of bootleg ig video, some of it even from
high school, i think.
this project will undoubtably take a few months as well. i am a television
producer here in albuquerque for our public access channel and could
possibly do some fun effects on this. we'll see...

the 'tribute' cds and found one called "sweet relief ii - the gravity of
the situation" - with the igs performing a vic chestnutt song called
"free of hope." (all of the songs were written by vc - nanci griffith
performs with hootie & the blowfish, rem, soul asylum and others are on
the cd - don't have it with me, or i'd give you the set list/performer.)

well, i was reflecting on the year gone by last friday...  i even called my
mother's boss, who happens to be a deadhead, and wished him a happy
jerry's-dead day...  but the question is, did the girls do anything by the
dead, other than, of course, uncle johns band.  (incidentally, i'm related
to warren zevon, who did casey jones on that album... )  the dead wrote
plenty of songs that they would do well..  could you imagine them doing

i taped it, but the tape i used was no good - (brand new too ..)

all you can hear on the tape is hissing and a & e very faintly ... and that's
at full blast ... i've narrowed it down to being a bum tape, because i taped
alot of other stuff and they all came out great ...

so if anyone out there taped it, please let me know - we'll set up a tape

as for the girls ... saturday as my sister, her husband and i were walking

thru ... so i'm checking out the van to see who the hell it is that thinks
they're so fucking special .. and ... in the back seat (ya know the rear one
- like the third seat or whatever) is this chick with short red hair and
sunglasses - man she looks familiar .. split second goes by and reality hits
*slap* - oh my god it's emily !!!!!!!!!!!!!! (now if i only could speak) ...
so i immediately give the van the 'ol once-over in search of amy ... and as
they get past me ... who do i see peering out of the truck-part fo the van
??? yes our very own amy .... i almost collapsed ... i couldn't move ... they
were like 2 feet from me and i couldn't do anything but smile really stupidly
....

and how many of us were gawking at amy hanging out in the grass by the side
of the stage while bruce cobern was playing >>> ?????????

i'm burned to a crisp and loved every minute of it!!
ani rocked! i respect her choice of songs in light of the number of small children in the
audience. although 'amazing grace' would have been cool.
spotted amy to the right of the stage during ani's set. she was munching total cereal out of
the box. i got some shots of her. (hope they come out).
the girls ruled! i think the stones must have written 'wild horses" with amy in mind! the new
'experimental' music is excellent! hope to see it make it to cd!
saw lots of listserv shirts in the crowd. how can i get one?
this had to be the best weekend i had in a long time! the entire crowd was kinda like a big
family, felt very safe to be amoung so many 'intimate strangers'. from now on newport folk
festival is going to be part of my life!

hey kim,

i think her name is linda.  she's a listee/ex-listee?'s (maggie) best
friend.  i was up in the front w/ them.  these photographers kept turning
away from the girls to photograph maggie and her friends.  they kept asking
them questions about the ig t-shirts they were wearing and seemed pleased
that the group was such an enthusiastic bunch.  it was so much fun when she
got called up.  maggie kept screaming "she's my best friend! she's my best
friend!"  it was great!

feel like i know what's going on. the line-up looks incredible this year!!!!

sundara, i am still very interested in helping to coordinate a meeting place of
some sort.  (i'm still out here.  i was backpacking out in the sisters
wilderness for a few days.  unfortunately there are no phone lines out there to
check in with the ig list. :-) )  if you want to be the point person, cool.

i've heard from kristina in bellingham too. we're supposed to let her know if
we cook something up.

what time are people planning to start standing in line for the ig show. the
seattle men's chorus and phoebe snow are opening for them, but phoebe snow is
also playing on friday night. the daemon showcase ends at 5:00 (and of course,
michelle malone is last!).

there are so many good shows from which to choose. oh, what a terrible problem
we have... :-)

hey everyone,

just got home from newport.  it was so great.  ani, indigo girls, joan
armatrading, suzanne vega all rocked :>   i camped fairly far away myself so
i didn't meet too many people from the list.  i did meet several ppeople at
the show and saw some shirts.  anyway, most people have already posted many
of the details about the show so i won't elaborate too much.

a woman sitting next to me made a boot of the show and i got her address.  we
made a deal that she'd send me that boot and i'd send her a copy o the nojf
show.  the only problem was that her tape ran out at the end of galileo so
the encore won't be on there.  i have no idea how the quality will be or
anything...but when she sends it i will be sure to let everyone know.

i need to go eat something now and take a shower after a weekend of
camping...goodbye for now :d

will grow much larger.

hi everyone,

     i signed-off for a bit due to me move from nyc to hong kong.  i've
     been here for only two weeks and already miss ig, since i left right
     at the hiatus of their concert schedule in the states.  boohoo...
     well, although all the personal ig concert stories are totally
     depressing me and making me completely homesick as i haven't yet fully
     adjusted to life in hong kong, it does also at the same time gives me
     comfort.  so thanks to all who post personal stories.

if i can survive living in foreign lands, i'll be in hong kong for two
years (work related of course).

oh yeah, does anyone have russell carter's address, if so can someone
send it to me? thanks.

i think, but am not positive, that i heard or read somewhere that the funky
collage on the so cover is by a local artist friend of theirs who made the
picture to be a sort of combination of significant objects that represent
the songs on the album. i still haven't been able to figure out what most of
them mean, especially the birdcage. this artist, (who's name escapes me,
though i know it's signed on the bottom of the collage either on the cover
or back of the cd case) also did a similar collage for rites of passage that
went on one of the tour t-shirts. my friend has it and we had fun pouring
over it and figuring out what every item represented.

oh, and by the way, i'm back from my family vacation to rochester, ny. i
spent saturday & sunday in the car, riding home and it was the most
depressing thing to be driving away from the east coast where newport was
going on and the other concerts this week will as well. on that note, please
you lucky souls who were there, keep posting newport info, i'd love to hear
anyone's stories, even if they seem repetitive. oh and to everyone going to
the upcoming concerts, have an incredible time! and think bootlegs!

ok, so i was really bored on the ride home from new york to wisconsin on
sunday, and i started this, mainly out of frustration at not being at
newport. i don't know if i can ressurect the ig parody thread, but if anyone
has any similar ideas, do post them and we could have some fun on the board
playing weird al again. this one isn't particularly funny (i was not in a
good mood) and it isn't particularly good either, perhaps someone out there
will get something out of it though. also, it's extremely unfinished as i
stopped it in progress to get some sleep, and since i'm no longer in the
situation i was in when i wrote it, i've been having trouble finishing it
up. so anyway, here it is:

hi again, i seem to be posting up a storm tonight, i'll try and make this
one the last for a while, i'm just so glad to be back on the list! :)

ok, now i am feeling totally stoooopid at the moment, because i only just
recently noticed something major from power of two. (does that ever happen
to you all, where you completely miss something from a song, despite hearing
it zillions of times?) well, i always took pot to be a nice, soothing song
about a relationship of em's and it cheers me up sometimes, but basically is
nice for when yer feeling mellow, as emily put it 'it's a little ditty.'
but, like every ig song i own, i've heard it over and over and over again
(never too much repetition though ;) ) but i never picked up on the
mathematical theme until really recently! i just took 'power of two',
'adding up the total', 'multiply life' to be nice analogies, but i never
connected them! well, i guess it's really not a big deal, but i'm tired, and
this board seems in need of posts so i thought i'd share. has anyone else
missed kinda obviously references like that?

alright this is going to be very short because i am still in complete shock
from yesterday and i need to get a hold on myself....
i was the one that emily chose to come up and sing ctf with them.  i can't
believe it actually happened and i want to tell you all every single detail but
i think i will save that for tomorrow.  heidi!  c'mon, you knowt that my name
is lynn and not linda...that's alright, i'll forgive you because i saw that
picture of you and michelle malone tonite when i was at maggie's house.  i hope
i'm speaking to the right heidi.. anyway, i don't know why this happened to me-
i never have good luck with anything.  i still think it was actually a dream.
oh, i must go to sleep now.  more tomorrow!

first of all, abigail, i liked your nashville revised...but you mentioned
two other works of art: "fred mann's still" and "northland in the
springtime"...i'm brand new to the list, so i haven't heard them yet...if
anyone would be willing to re-post them...(the authors, perhaps?)...i could

just wanted to let everyone know that as i write, sarah and her friend and
both dads are in a hotel room in florida!!!!!  they will start their trip

week of my life. and due to the generosity of some very special freinds i

hey guys,

     i know it's about 3:30am est, but it's 3:30pm here in hong kong and my
     bosses just both left the office, so i can have a little goofing
     around time.  so, i thought i'd post this dream i had in the beginning
     of the week. i've been meaning to get this down in my journal but just
     haven't been motivated enough to do it.  since it's been a few days
     the little details of the dream i've already forgotten, but the gist
     is that amy was in my dream, weird.

here we go:

     for some reason this dream takes place on the campus of upenn.  ig is
     supposed to perform for an outdoor concert in some garden.  where is
     there a garden at upenn, i have no idea.  anyway, so amy's just
     hanging out and i just walk over to see if it's really her.  we end up
     talking about something (it was unclear in the dream too) but whatever
     it was i ended up pressing my face against her.  (i guess showing or
     proving something, i have zippo idea)  it was one of those dreams that
     i could actually feel her face on mine.  do you know what i mean.
     anyway, during that time i my stomach was in knots and filled with
     butterflies.  anyway, i think she had to leave to start theire portion
     of the show and we agreed to meet later.  but during the concert she
     dedicates a song to me and says something that really bothered me.
     something insinuating that we were not going to meet up later.  all i
     know is that i couldn't figure out what changed her mind and i was
     really disappointed.

that's it, weird, huh?

i think it's just anxiety over my move to hong kong. who knows? any
dream interpreters out there?

why the hell i'm up at this hour, i don't know.

anyhow, i had an ig dream the other night--they were playing in my backyard
under the oak tree for me and sixty (wherever that no. came from) of my
closest friends. damn don't i wish that could be reality. anyway, we all
partied afterwards and all you list people came to the party. we all had a
blast.

i got inspired from this dream to write an "all i really need to know about
life i learned from amy ray and emily saliers" script which included mainly
lines from their songs.  i will be publishing this on my soon-to-be web page.
i'd like to have input from y'all out there (the contributors will all be
acknowledged, i promise).  what have you learned from them?  in the spirit
of this genre, i'm looking for concise thoughts.  (like my own thoughts are
concise, but what the hay)  you don't have to be too personal if you don't
wish to be.  and please post these to the list!!  everyone would enjoy
reading them.

i'll start:  "the hardest to learn was the least complicated."  (it's my
favorite ig line of all time.  as some of you may remember, i thought emily
must have had ap calculus in mind when she wrote it.  :)  )

yeah, that's part of sony's "mastersound" series. it's a remastering of the
self-titled album on a 24-karat gold disc.

the gold disc bit, in my opinion, is hype.  allegedly, you get fewer
dropouts, and a longer lasting disc.  according to ultradisc, a leading
manufacturer of gold disc recordings, you get "overall better quality for
your listening dollar."  yeah, right.  even if you've spent 10 grand on your
listening equipment, you won't be able to tell a gold disc from an aluminum
one.  in my experience, anyway.

the remastering, though is another matter. mastering is the part of the
manufacturing process whereby the master tape of the album is transferred to
elements from which cd's (lp's, laserdiscs, etc.) can be pressed. many early
cd's were mastered very poorly - in many cases, cd's were pressed from tapes
that had been equalized for pressing records, so the sound wasn't optimized
for the digital medium. lately, the art and science of cd mastering has taken
great strides, and many old discs are being remastered, resulting in better
sound.

sony's mastersound series uses their own particular process ("super bit
mapping") for mastering a disc, and based on the handful of mastersound discs
i bought, it's a pretty solid one. in fact, i would say that the sony
mastersound edition of dave brubeck's "time out" is one of the finest
sounding cd's in my collection.

however, the whole point of mastering is to accurately present the original
source tape as faithfully as possible, while retaining musicality.  the
problem is that if the source tape isn't all that hot, the end product isn't
going to be all that hot, either.  and, unfortunately, the source tape for
"indigo girls" apparently didn't hold up too well.  based on my listening to
the mastersound version, the tape has suffered "print-through," where the
magnetic layers of tape that lie next to each other on the spool start to
influence one another.  if you listen closely to the tail-out of most of the
songs on the disc, you'll hear the song end twice...  first, you'll get the
normal ending, and then, a second or so later, v-e-r-y quietly, you'll hear
the ending again.  sort of like a ghost on a poorly recieved tv station.
which is a terrible shame, because in every other way, the mastersound disc
is superior.  the sound is more dynamic, and the clarity is increased.
personally, i usually listen to the gold disc, but if i'm using headphones,
the print-through is too glaring, and i prefer the other version.

the packaging of the collector's edition is superior too, with a 4-color
picture disc label (of the album cover) and a nicely printed booklet that
folds out to a larger-than-lp-sized reproduction of the cover. (well, the
main photo on the cover, anyway.) you also get a nicely textured slipcover.

my recommendation is that if you're going to be listing on a boombox, or in a
car, it's really not worth it, unless you're into the packaging. if you've
got a higher end playback system, i'd rate it a "maybe." but i certainly
wouldn't expect to entirely replace the regular version with it.

hello, everyone.

if seabrook leaked, melting hampton beach into the sea, i might not have a
problem with that. god, what a hellish scene. luckily, all disappointing
externals were themselves melted by the near-nuclear beauty of these two
women.

  i was blown straight out of the top of my head, and still haven't
returned.  when they came out and eased into "welcome me," the collective
swoon began.  the songs are becoming a world tour, with geographic locales
sprinkled increasingly liberally--anyone notice this?  they are casting a
net of song over our world.  the new songs were incredible.   dgtgag is the
best amy i've heard in some time.  what a climax!

my fave, though, was undoubtedly: e's "winthrop" which she played on piano
(is there an instrument she doesn't excel at?); this song has deep personal
meaning for me, sending years of my life streaming with emotion before my
eyes. (i spent my college years in winthrop; to hear this angel sing about
the coffee shop where i waited for the bus, the planes overhead, the
fishermen......oh boy......) she is writing the songs of my life while i'm
still learning to play the bass! time to get out the guitar (and the
map...).

now, back here under the fluorescent lights, amidst the buttoned-up souls,
i'm newly looking forward to leaving corporate america in sept....

saw jackson very early on his tour in st. louis at the fox theater.  it was
really a good show.  he has a very good band touring with him.  if i remember
correctly he only played 4 or 5 songs from the new album "looking east" and i
think played songs from every album except "lawyers in love".
however, the main reason i would not miss this show is because shawn colvin
will be the opening act.  in my mind, she is one of the best singer/songwriter/
muscians in the world.

soulful cover - mick jagger would be jealous.

emily played electric guitar and sandy garfinkle joined them on
harmonica. mm sang the verse that jerry marotta sang on the 1200
curfews live version.

7. (solo song by mm on electric guitar)
didn't hear a title, but it had a refrain, "i'm begging you don't
go away". her new album is due this fall. when she finished, emily
said, "isn't she awesome?" and the crowd went wild.

8. the river said "shame on you"(?) (new - amy's)
an uptempo song about racism. the style reminded me somewhat of
van morrison - very cool!

9. winthrop(?) (new - emily solo, on piano)
my husband and i began shrieking because we live in winthrop, ma
(him, his whole life; me, 14 years)! a beautiful ballad about time,
tides and airplanes.

10. hey kind friend (new - amy's)
emily played appalachian dulcimer.

12. chiapas bound (new - amy solo, on electric guitar)
(i used my binoculars and saw that amy had a "rock for choice"

article from the nff program. i did e-mail the originator of that post and
asked if she had typed the article for submission to the lifeblood site.
she hasn't replied yet, but does anybody else have a copy of the program?

once upon a time, i heard a song on the radio...
gotta get out of bed, get a hammer and a nail
learn how to use my hands...

wow. got me--hook, line and sinker! been buying them
up ever since.

but newport was my first time seeing them live (i went
last year but the rain got to be too much for my (now ex-)
wife, and we left before ig got to play). they were very
impressive.

one trivial annoyance tho--why don't they use guitar stands
to hold the ones they're not playing. i felt it interrupted
the flow of the concert to have roadies coming on-stage
between almost every song to swap guitars.

this festival was even more special for me because of all
the new friends i made and who turned me on to this list--

they have a small intro to a&e, and it incorrectly reads "the celebrated
duo, known for their distinctive harmonies and
riveting live performances, return to newport in one of their only live
appearances this year. the indigo girls spent much of 1994 on their honor
the earth tour, to benefit  native american groups working for
environmental causes."  what i mean by "incorrectly", is the "one of their
only live appearances this year...." statement.  they also include an audio
sample of "least complicated".

must have been her normal strawberry blonde, but this picture shows her to

hi all-

i finally made it back to the cities very early this morning after such
an amazing weekend in newport. thanks again to everyone who funded our
trip there--we all had a blast hanging out and listening to the music as
well as getting the chance to meet some of you listers. jenny and i were
both so exited to finally meet some of the people who have been so kind and
supportive since we flipped the 4runner.

friday night at the hotel viking was so damn funny. i had only heard
john gorka's music before, never patty larkin or cheryl wheeler or cliff
eberhardt. they were excellent, but an additional highlight was seeing
ani difranco and andy milling around in the crowd.

as for saturday and sunday, the pain of being out in the sun that long
was nothing compared to all the good music!  i was very impressed with
lisa loeb's performance, and really enjoyed hearing all of ig's new
stuff.  that winthrop song emily did on the piano was by far my
favorite, and congrats to whoever made it on stage.  if anyone, i'm just
glad it was a very big fan of theirs.  ani on sat. did a great job, too,
but i was kindof bummed she didn't play "untouchable face".  and what was
up with that dancer jumping on stage?  i heard that when ani didn't save
her, emily flicked off the dancer from offstage.  i think it was kate who
was telling me that.  imho, ani handled that incident pretty well.

once again, thanks to everyone who turned our nightmare of an accident
into a lot of great memories by getting us out to rhode island. we all
had a blast-

i'm suprised no one has said anyting yet..we are probably
all too exhasuted!  the show itself was great.  40 min of
michelle malone opening and then 2 hours of ig.  i did, howevr,
rediscover why i hate general admission shows.  no matter
how early you get there, at least 30-40 people will cut you in
line.  still, we wound up with very good seats  and i was able to
talk with/meet a number of list members  i missed at newport.

i thought it was kinda odd to end with ghost, on such a quiet note.

to dance..it was almost too packed anyway with teh tables and all.  i'm
sure that those of you seeing later shows on the tour are going to
have a great time.  me, all i want is a nice long nap  :)

ok, the guy posted more info to the bragg listserv. he left out ig in the
list of performers (boggle) but they are scheduled to perform. call and
make sure though if they're the only reason you're going. people asked me
to post more information as i received it. remember this is in cleveland.

more info on the woody guthrie celebration on september 28th that will
feature billy, bruce springsteen, pete seeger, ani difranco and arlo

house on sunday at lakewood amphtheater. emily is advertised but i chatted
with someone who said she only "might" perform. she may be there who knows.
i figure it would be cool to catch a gig of atlanta artists and i am also
sure someone from atlanta can post the details. it should rock!

as for last night, it  was an incredible set to hear, the venue does not do
the ig justice, i can say i probably will never go to another show there,
security was very uptight.  the girls let people who didn't have tixs watch
from the side of the show.  i drank a bit too much. i finally met bert,
i-girl, deb reiser, greg flamer, jill and sue, susan marine, howie from
colorado, gail anthony, sherlyn, and tons of others, it was a great show for
that alone. i'm really exhausted today, a tape does exist. i didnt get the
whole show but most of it. missed two songs.

is there anyone out there who saw the girls on their honor the earth tour?
they came to denver and had a private party with their most obssessed fans
(we had to pay $100 for it).  there were about 40 people there.  it was my
dream come true!  they talked with us for a bit about their efforts with the
indigenous womens foundation then went to every table (5 or 6 people each)
in the joint.  they signed autographs and took pictures with us!  a friend of
mine brought in her guitar body and they both signed it!  i felt extremely
horrible when it was done because i knew i'd never get another chance like

my comments on the nff...

i had an incredible time... my only festival complaint is that the ani
performance wasn't mixed very well, her vocals and guitar were way too low.
all the others were mixed really well. loved seeing ani, suzanne, joan,
michelles (shocked and malone), ig... almost all of the others were
entertaining as well.

as far as the ig set... i didn't care much for the new songs, and the rest of
the ig fans in my party all felt the same.  i'm used to ig taking big chances
from one album to the next, and i guess there's only so far they can go... but
in spite of the different instrumentation (banjo, piano, electric guitars,
steel guitar, etc.), these songs seemed, stylistically, more from the strange
fire or indigo girls era.  and we were all particularly distressed that amy
would write a song with a "la la la" chorus ("shame on you," the one that
drew a comparison to van morrison). <g>  i guess that's why for me, the
highlights of the show were "wild horses," "bury my heart...," and "down by
the river."  i'm sure the new stuff will grow on me, but they just didn't have
the impact of, say, "touch me fall" the first time i heard it.

so where were all you far-flung listers?  we drove up from dc and saw very few
license plates from farther away than nyc headed in that direction.  actually,
i was surprised at how small ft. adams is -- only 10,000 tickets sold,
according to the radio report i heard.  i'm amazed it didn't sell out sooner,
with that lineup!

you know after hampton beach last night i was thinking about this. if
i had the chance to ask amy one music related question (like during

songs--it's a guitar tech, who tunes/retunes their guitars between
songs so that each time they swap instruments, the >new< one is
perfectly in tune. when you leave 'em on the stand, they go >out.<
i guess i'd rather watch the techie bring 'em a new guitar and have
them start the song right away than have to wait for a or e to tune
up.

having a guitar tech is a major help!

i'll try to make this short and sweet ... my left pinky got smashed in a
door yesterday afternoon, and i'm gonna loose the fingernail and might have
permanent nerve damage, so my typing is slow and painful (did you ever
notice that *lots* of important letters are at that end of the keyboard?!
thank goodness for the backspace key!) but i did make it to the concert!!!

it was great! i won't go into tons of detail (leave the typing to others!)
but here's a few highlights:

-meeting listmistress jude and all the other listees (special thanks to
margaret clayton for getting us better seats!!) - what a great group to sit
with! it was especially fun meeting sherlyn from australia and gail from
scotland.

-hearing michelle malone live for the first time ... she is *amazing*!!!
those of you seeing her during this tour, you're in for a treat!  and amy
said at one point,  "she's a member of the band now"  might that be true?
really liked her song about the butter biscuit ("... you can bang my gong
... on the front lawn ...")  :-)

-hearing the new songs ... "map" is going to be a great album!! i liked
them all, but especially "shame on you" and "get out the map" they also
played "blood quantum" from that "honor" album that's being issued later
this month ... its good!

-hearing them do "wild horses" ... i agree with the person who said that the
song was written for amy and michelle ... its so *beautiful*

-they did "tried to be true" (!!!) and "i don't wanna know" - and didn't do
closer to fine as an encore!!! that was weird!

-to quote from andrew bissaro (who i missed meeting, but saw him from afar
in his t-shirt):

it was pretty funny, though that sulli, the guitar tech for the newport
show kind of screwed up the alternate tuning on galileo and emily started
playing and realized this and had to stop and drop her e to d herself. it
was excruciating to see sulli off stage realizing that she screwed up.
then, emily had to stop again to adjust her capo. it was cool, though.

i saw ani in olympia and she had her capo on the wrong fret and she
started playing and singing and got to a part where she couldn't sing it
and stopped to move her capo. she laughed and said, 'it would've been
fine until sara started to play her part!' could you imagine?

asked several people what happened in 1694 but to no avail..... so does

hey all,

okay, so i came home yesterday and listened to my boot and it actually
came out really, really good.  anyone who has a copy of my boot from the
new orleans shows will already be familiar with the miranda commentary.
once again, miranda has graced the show with a couple of her very special
comments (right when they get on stage, "man, amy needs a haircut").  i
made her hold back this time, even though you can hear her laughing at the
end of chiapas bound.  she's got some issues about the end of that song.
oh and every once in a while you can hear the motor in my camera grinding.
it's really no big deal and i was really surprised at how well the whole
thing came out.  i figured i'd offer my copy since i haven't seen anyone
else do it yet.

since they did mostly new material the crowd was pretty quiet.  i
also used a remote microphone that i had clipped to someone's chair.  we
were about 10 people back, dead center.  the sound at that spot was near
perfect.

so, since i imagine a lot of you want to hear this show, i'm going to
offer up my boot, but only through a tape tree since i don't want to get
stuck with all the dubbing.

here's the deal, if you are willing to be a branch, let's do zodiac signs
since that seems to work best, then write me back so i can give you my
snail mail.

each branch will send me a 100-minute blank with a sase and i will send
back the dub and enough inserts to get you through the process.

don't send me any requests unless you are going to be a branch.  i'm not
organized enough to keep track of all this.  learned my lesson with the
new orleans boot.  :)

i think this is a good point.  i don't think that the use of the la la
la's and the catchyness of the tune would be questioned as much if it was
an emily song.  i really like the song because of the idea that it was so
easy to pick up and sing along with, yet at the same time, it had a
somewhat scathing underbelly when you thought about the words.  sort of
like a "born in the usa" <-- that sounds like a patriotic song and is
anything but (bruce now does this song completely differently, with the
chorus all but gone, so that there is no way to misinterpret the meaning.
kind of interesting that he seems to feel that that was needed to for
people to understand what he was saying).

i got really confused during the middle of the set because all the songs
seemed to be more in each other's styles:

shame on you was an amy song that sounded more emily becasue of the
catchyness of it.

kind friend, the next amy song, sounded like an emily song because it was
so quiet and almost gentle.

and then they come roaring back with it's alright, a sure fire amy song?
nope, this one's by emily!

maybe the chance taking on the new album is that they are switching
songwriting styles.

hello all! well, after an awesome weekend in newport, i need some info =
regarding philly. i'll be going to the show at the electric factory and =
was wondering if anyone knew anything about that area of town? is it a =
decent area of town and are there any hotels near the club and stuff =
like that?

not only am i the self-appointed coordinator of our little bumbershoot
extravaganza,  i'm the counter-downer too.  life is so nice right now!
okay,  i'm pretty sure i've replied to everyone who wants to meet up at
bumbershoot,  if not,  i'm sorry.  and, if you haven't written me,  and you
wanna meet up, let me know.
i've been talking with sarah down in oregon, and here's the plan we came up
to try to allow everyone to see the shows they want to see, while still
standing in line so we can all have super up-close views of the indigo
girls.  especially since memorial stadium is huge.
the plan:  i plan on getting to bumbershoot the moment the gates open, and
then head directly to the line to see the girls.  then,  after we've
secured a spot in line for us all,  we could have shifts, of say 1/2 to
an hour,
depending on how many people want to participate, of people standing in
line, while the rest of us can go watch the shows we don't want to miss,
especially the wild stage daemon records stuff (since the nimrods who
planned this thing didn't take this into consideration)  then right before
the show, we can all meet back at in line and watch the show.  sounds
simple enough (hah)  also,  we could all meet up after the show and go
somewhere fun and talk about how great the show was.

so how does this sound?  please let me know if you think there is now way
this will work, or if you think it is great, or anything else we should
consider.  hopefully we can work something out that won't be too confusing
or complicated.  yay, only 18 days,  actually it's only like 17 days and a
couple of hours.  how fun!  love sundara

there have probably been other reviews posted by now, but i just wanted to
list my own set of highlights.

- i loved all the new songs! it's alright and shame on you particularly
seemed to strike a real ig groove in my book, plus get out the map, kind
friend, don't give that girl a gun, chiapas bound were all well received.

- em soloing on piano! she is now a goddess of the ivories as well as the
guitar strings. both songs she did (winthrop and leeds) were fall into the
hauntingly beautiful category and i was very happy to be sitting close the
that corner of the stage to watch her sing.

- galileo is always a spiritual high point for me. a&e seemed so touched by
the crowd's strong sing-along on this ... wouldn't you think they'd be a bit
more jaded by now and know that all of us fans know the words to galileo by
heart?!

- i saw mike reynolds in the crowd (couldn't miss the orange pine tree camp
shirt) -- a big moment of the night when security was trying to move him out
and emily said, "he's okay y'all, don't take him out. let him stay." i
thought that was very cool of her.

- a&e seemed as bewildered by the venue as the rest of us! you couldn't get
up and dance, so this was my first time experiencing the girls sitting down!
bummer but at least we could see the whole time. it's really not the ideal
place to see a show, but since it's just 20 minutes from my house, i'm not
going to complain too much.

- they invited a guy up on stage to propose to his girlfriend in the middle
of the show and seemed to get a real kick out of it.

i am still smiling ... it was great to see the girls again (it's been 18
months for me!). they looked and sounded great and definitely seem ready to
have some fun on this tour.

        hi again...new topic.   corinne had a valid point about the witch
trials happening in 1694 (or thereabouts) but in the lyrics amy sings..."you
know it's funny, i think we were on the same boat back in 1694"...   and
also considering the lyrics leading up to the date reference, i don't think
she's referring to the witch trials.  however, right now i can't think of
any other strong historical event that stands out.  you have to admit though
that the date, and the way it's delivered melds perfectly into the tempo of
the song, specific reference or not!

i turned on 95.7 fm in san diego today, and heard a band (or solo
artist) doing a cover of "closer to fine". it was aweful! no harmonies,
just the echo line in "the less i seek" line. the guitars were fairly
true, but the guy didn't have the voice for it.

well, i don't know what to say.  all this talk about newport and other
assorted ig shows has gotten me in a tizzy to hear their new songs.  but i
have good news for a bunch of the rest of us unfortunates.  while we
patiently wait for the boots to be ready for us, i have finally finished
the compilation tape i was making, and it should definitely satiate some
of the urges you have to hear their new songs.  also, it's got some cool
surprises as well.  if you haven't heard about it, or forgot about it, i
have been collecting ig songs from the days of yore since the beginning of
july that have very specific prerequisites about them.  these are songs
that a & e wrote and performed to audiences before they had been recorded
in the studio.  so many-in fact all- of the songs on this tape sound very
different than what we are used to hearing.  the bonus is that i also put
on a bunch of their new songs (since they haven't done the studio thing
yet for their new album). regrettably, i didn't get all the new
songs, but most of them anyway.  here's the set list, and some of my
notes:

love will come to you-emily solo, and she completely silences an otherwise
                       rowdy crowd.  i got misty
don't give that girl a gun-one of amy's new ones.  i love the jamming part
prince of darkness- i should let you know that i am a huge emily person,
                    so the normally unheard of guitar solo on this version
                    was what made me put it on.
fugitive-ever wonder what it would sound like if emily went off on the
         solo instead of amy doing it?(even though amy's solo has a
         definite character)
get out the map-very cool new emily.  i can't wait to hear the finished
                product
cedar tree-again, nice guitar work, and just a cool song
language or the kiss-solo emily
pushing the needle too far-amy can really punch you in the stomach with a
                           song
going to the country-when you get this, remember the word "movie"
shame on you-i really don't mind the la la la's, in fact, i love them! my

so that's it!  i had to make some pretty tough decisions about which songs
to include since i had a more than enough for one tape.  so i chose the
ones that sounded the most different, or had the best recording quality.
so if your favorites aren't on here, then maybe i'll make another one
later with the crappy same old same old versions.  just kidding.  ok
enough already.  here's how to get it:

we are doing this by the zodiac so when you match the birthdate with the
sign, write that cool person a message and they will tell you their
regular mail addressfor you to send them a 100 minute tape with a sase.
it needs to be 100 minute though. remember that. preferably high bias
maxell or tdk type ii. please include enough postage for the return of
your tape.

just a few flashbacks....

there are always lessons to be learned in every experience.....here are a few i
learned at newport..

a. wisconsin and north dakota have some cool residents....despite:
                1. their forgetting sarah mclachlan chords
                2. their tendency towards heat stroke
                3. their early bedtime

b. airline departure times and dates are not written in stone

c. australian, european (this includes you, sharon) and fargo accents will make
   you:
                1. smile
                2. laugh
                3. say, "huh?" a lot (you betcha!)

d. don't be too quick to offer someone else's dell's lemon ice to those sitting
around you (this could probably be somehow incorporated as #4 in a.)

e. asian-descended listers *rule*

f. one security guard forlornly yelling, "stop.....come back!" to the backs of
200, sleep-deprived, rampaging fans will not make them come back nor stop

g. order list shirts when you get the chance, 'cause they look *really* cool

any other lessons learned out there?

act like people south of the u.s. border just got here yesterday.
and anyway.....didn't the southwestern part of the country
(including texas and california ) used to be mexico ?

wow, what a great idea! needless to say, there are sooo many amazing quotes
and bits of wisdom amy and emily have given us, but picking out my favorite
isn't hard. the piece of advice i've taken the most from is from emily and
it wasn't a song lyric. it comes from her '6th grade boyfriend (danny)
shpiel' that she used as an intro to least complicated on 1200c. emily said
"you have to laugh at yourself because you'd cry your eyes out if you
didn't" and those are, in my opinion, the ultimate words to live by. that
motto has helped me through a lot and continues to help me face the world on
a daily basis. i owe her so much gratitude for this one memorable qoute.

here are my personal highlights from the big weekend...

for me, the ig magic started after saturday's show.  as we were walking down
the road away from the show (the road was filled with people) there were some
obnoxious drivers who insisted on honking their horns and pushing their way
through the crowd.  much like the other listee wrote, i noticed a familiar
face in a brick red mini van as i cursed their need to rush.  my friend
assured me that it was not emily, but everyone else around me agreed that it
was.  it was the closest i had ever been to them, and all i could say was,
"why don't these people just wait and let everyone walk down the road!"

by monday night, however, i had gotten closer.  soon after arriving at the
casino ballroom, i heard the rumor that you could hear a&e practicing over by
the mens room.  sure enough, there were four or five guys standing in the
hallway that led to the bathroom, listening to the music that was coming over
the drop cieling.  we were only inches away from them at that point,
unfortunately, however, we were separated by a wall and a steel door.

my close encounters weren't over.  we were sitting probably twenty feet from
the stage, directly left of it.  about five minutes before ig took the stage,
they made their way to the dressing room, and had to walk right by us.  i was
so amazed -- they were just walking through the crowd as if they were there
to see the show, and no one seemed to notice them.  when i saw them all i
could manage to do was point and clap, but at least the folks at my table
figured out what i was trying to say.

needless to say, it was all pretty amazing. not quite as special as being
invited up on stage (congrats linda/lisa?, you were terrific!), but just as
special for me. it was especially nice because while i was in atlanta for the
olympics a few weeks ago, we made a pilgrimage to eddie's attic for dinner,
but i couldn't get in because i was three weeks shy of my 21st birthday.

hey guys! been reading the theories about 1694 being about the salem witch
trials and i think i disagree. i've never heard the song or anything but we
have to rule out the witch trials because they were back in 1692. june
through august of 1692 to be exact. so, unless amy accidentally mixed up the
dates, 1694 has it's own significance separate of the witch trials. we need
to keep digging and find out what happened in 1694 :)

a lurker sticks her head out again.  too shy at newport to join up with the
crew, but i still ran into a couple of people...list people were visible even
in a crowd of 10,000.  now i wish i'd been less shy, but so it goes...next
year!  a brief version of our trip...

i am going to adopt cheryl wheeler. i'm older than she is (i'm almost 48), and
i'm sure she'd like to join our insane household, as long as she is not
allergic to cats. the friday night show was excellent, the right way to start
the weekend...and no sunscreen was needed!

i am so glad i get this list, so we were up at 5:30 saturday morning, and knew
what to do at the park...i try to imagine first-time people who know the
concert starts at 11:30 and don't get there till mid-morning.  we didn't even
race down the hill, still got good line placement, and eventually a place where
we wanted to be, right by the sound booth, excellent view but little risk of
being trampled...and we didn't know when we picked it how relevant that was.
others have talked about saturday's music.  joan was definitely the high point
for us.  our reaction to ani was tainted by the "adolescents with attitudes"
who tromped all over to rush the stage, kids who had not gotten good spots in
the morning but who felt they were entitled to block the view of those who had
(i'm young enough to be running down roads with lawn chairs at 6:15, but old
enought to wonder what happened to manners and civility).  i just didn't
understand...

sunday was wear list shirt day, get up even earlier, find more people in the
park earlier, figure out the big group is the list group...but too shy.  down
the hill when the first gate opens, i'm ahead of my partner cuz i run faster.
almost to lower parking lot.  bolt of lightning from sky.  tickets are in my
briefcase...back in hotel.  turn around and start running back up the hill.
get to meet bert, tho he didn't know it...i'm the person in the list t-shirt
who he yelled "you're running the wrong way!" to...they say when you get old,
the memory goes first.  i knew it was bert because he looked like what i
thought bert might look like, and while waiting for the first gate to open i'd
heard him called by his name.  at least my partner could still get us line
position, and it was still early enough after the roundtrip  i was even parked
in the same row.  crisis averted.  and we got the same "seats" as on saturday!

next list experience...joining the human scramble trying for moxy fruvous cds.
suddenly tall chris becker is reaching and handing disks to short me, saying,
"i'll grab some for a list person," and introducing himself. it was not a good
time to be a short person in that chaos!

again, others have talked the music, all of which was excellent, even if
michelle shocked seemed to be on a slightly different planet.  i want the new
ig album _now_!  and a contrast...the kids who came crashing up from the back
through the crowd for ig were very different from the ani kids...less
confrontational, more apologetic, enthusiasm without hostile attitude.  again,
i just didn't get saturday...

and next year i'll be brave enough to talk to more of you, even if i'm older
than many of your parents, and a college professor to boot! see you in the
parking lot at 6!

a few people have written to the list commenting how happy they were to hear
ttbt both at hampton and newport. how ironic was it that i was about to
write in asking if they play it at every show -- i've seen 6 and they have
played it at least four times, if not 5. i was much more surprised and
grateful to finally hear kid fears.

kevin... who is watching kay bailey (we don't need an endangered species
act) hutchinson speak at the republican convention and thinking that 10:15 is
a very reasonable time to go to bed -- well, at least tonight it is.

   woo boy, my mailbox has been swamped!  thank you to everyone who showed
interest in my bootleg compilation called "no curfews". i am putting
together a tape tree to get this tape distributed to those who want it. i
have gotten 12 people to be branches on the tape tree, a couple of back
ups, and someone for the uk branch and someone for the asia/australia
branch.  everyone who is a branch of the tree is in the process of sending
me their blank tape right now.  i'm hoping that everything is done and out
to the branches by the end of next week.  once i have put everything into
the mail, i will post the branches of the tree and y'all can write to them
and get addresses to send your blanks and your return addressed and stamped
envelopes.
