subject: mapped
hey everyone!
okay, i finished the map compilation tape this afternoon, so i will start
taping and sending them out tomorrow. :)
i decided on the name mapped. i'm still not sure why. i just liked the way
is sounds. but it was hard to decide, you all came up with a lot of good
suggestions. so thanks! one of my personal favorites was "trying to
refold the map" hee hee.
so here is the final list of what's on it. i chose these versions based on
sound quality and how dynamic the performance was. quite a few of the
songs are on it 2 or 3 times. i did this if i had two or more good
versions of a song, especially if one was a radio broadcast. also, i
tried to include early and later versions of certain songs to show the
evolution of it over the course of the tour, esp shame on you, dgtgag, and
get out the map. on some of the songs, i chose the version cause of that
specific show, like i had to put hey kind friend from bumbershoot on, cause
amy wrote it partly about the northwest, so i wanted a northwest
performance. leeds isn't the best version i have, but it's an amazing
performance cause you can hear the rain and thunder in the background, it
gives me shivers. and, this may be cheesy, but i really don't care, i
threw in some of the funny things they said (like the moon comment at
bumbershoot) these comments weren't before a song i was using, but they
make me smile, so i wanted to put them on. i hope no one minds. i ended
up putting way more thought into this then i thought i would, and i'm
really happy with the results. everything sounds great, and the copies you
all will be getting have very little sound quality loss. i hope you all
enjoy it!
side one:
it's alright, minneapolis 9/20
don't give that girl a gun, seattle, wa 8/31

get out the map new orleans jazz fest. 5/4

hey kind friend, seattle, wa 8/31
shame on you, nojf 5/4
dgtgag, minneapolis 9/20

again, it's a 90 minute tape, and if anyone who hasn't contacted me, and
wants a copy, email me and i'll send you the info on how to get it :)

i'm a dumb ass, i din't pay attention when she posted that she was doing
this in the first place. so to all of you who have been false-alarmed
into frenzy because so many boot offers have opened and closed in the last
few days: here is your big chance! i was organizing a small tree for the
two tapes i was offering, but this is better so scratch that.
i myself will probably get a few of these tapes that are missing from my

are way less than on mine.

anyway, he wrote something about boxing and stuff and, although i
value his opinion and appreciate his response to my post, i humbly
request that *anyone* who recognizes boxing as a noble 'sport',
rethink their position. boxing is the *only* so-called 'sport' in
the world that has as it's *goal* causing significant injury to
another human being. in the case of a 'knock-out', as i think trant
mentioned, that injury is a clinically apparent concussion. why two
men beating each other senseless in a confined space is considered a
sport, i don't know.
regarding m. ali (clever spell avoidance manuvuer) being a man
of peace or not, i don't know. i only mentioned a professional boxer
claiming co status as an example of irony - ironic mainly because of
my view of boxing as outlined above. ali certainly seems pretty
docile to me, but then he's kinda had that beaten into him. : )
seriously, though, i don't doubt that men like ali, tyson, and
holyfield are fine atheletes but boxing itself is not noble in any
way. which is not to say that i wasn't curious about who won the
holyfield/tyson fight and that i haven't watched a fight or two
myself, but i've also driven an automobile when i was drunk and
that's hardly a noble activity.
boxing is violence and violence only. violence begets violence.
ha! sorry, harry, i'm not trying to flame you. i'm just hoping to
convince someone, anyone, who casually accepts what is piped into
their homes through the tv to stop and re-evaluate what they are
watching.

the studio version of 'everbody's waiting' was on the original 'blue food',
a lot of people i knew usually cut the song because it was just enough to
make it not fit on a sixty minute tape, and cleaner versions were available
from the crazy game 45.

here's my perception of mystery, you can take it or leave it as you
choose...it's really up to you.
i always saw it as a love song, for two people that just kind of stumbled
into it, and now they're wondering how and why they fell in love. it's all
so new and strange and odd, that they just can't comprehend it. hence, the
mystery. and because it's so new, they don't know how to deal with all of
the quirks of being in love, so *maybe that's all that we need is to met
in the middle of impossibility*
the way i look at it, this has always been the quintessal first love song.
it's a song that when you hear it, you think back to that one time that
you fell in love, and you didn't know what you were doing, but you were
happy nonetheless. when it was all new and strange, and it colored the
everyday workings of life with some strange new fire. do any of you
understand what i mean by that?

hi all,
i'm a definite newbie to the list, two weeks ago i didn't even
know that boots of ig was commonplace and accepted by amy and emily - let
alone considered legal. yes, my ignorance on this subject is apparent.
i don't know the protocols for a "boot tree" or even how to get on one.
(but if any wonderful listperson would care to enlighten me, hey, my ears
are itchin'.)
i'm responding to kristina's msg about getting blanks for boots.
she seemed to be taken aback that someone was requesting a 3:1 ratio.
(ok i admit that i'm green, but i'm assuming that means the person wants
3 blanks for 1 copy of a boot, right? ta da) kristina was even a little
perturbed that a person was asking for blanks at all. i think that
3:1 is a bit overboard too, but a 1:1 ratio doesn't seem unfair. if a
person is going to take the time to make the tapes and mail them... i
don't know, but i think the person asking for the tapes might even pay
for the postage of getting them. that wouldn't be unfair in my mind...
if this idea is a completely un-heard-of practice in "bootland"
will someone let me know? i don't want to step on the toes of any boots
or "get the boot" of any chances that i might get future boots. don't
think that i'm just bootlicking by saying this, either. anyhow, this
newbie would be eternally grateful for any feedback ya'll care to send.
thanks,

hi again allison-
bootleg trading is, for the most part, a subjective experience and people
have all sorts of differences. different lists also have different
expectations. however, on this list, the general rules are as follows:
if you don'th ave anything to trade and some kind soul is willing to make
copies for you, what you do is this. you send them a padded envelope, a
blank tape of the correct length, enough postage to cover them mailing it
back to you, and also put your address on the padded envelope. you put
all this in a larger envelope, with a note reminding them which boot you
are requesting (very important), and wait. if it takes them a few weeks,
don't panic, cause lot's of people have lots of dubbing to do. i usually
let three or four weeks go by before i write and nag.
also, you want to make sure you use the right kind of tapes. the most
prefered tapes are maxell xlii or tdk-sa. they are better quality tapes
by far. some folks use other brands like sony and such, but only a few
and no one really knows why. other folks use lesser quality tapes, but
that can pose problems in actual trading. still others use the next grade
up, maxell has released some new fancy schmancy new kind, but it's more
expensive and still not available everywhere. people who use it will
almost always be happy with xliis.
if trading bootlegs:
first, negotiate the trade over e-mail. you write someone and say i have
such and such boots, or post to the list i'm looking for such and such or
whatever, and people respond. you can work out an even trade, or trade
one tape for blanks and sase, or whatever. it's really fun once you get
started, and then what happens is you make your copy of the tape and send
it to them, on a good quality tape, of course, and they make theirs and
send it to you. most people, again, try to complete most trades within
three weeks or so, but sometimes people's lives intervene (like mine is
presently).
a few common errors to avoid:
failing to send postage, asking for a 2:1 ratio (people get really wacked
about that on this list, whereas other lists it's normal), neglecting to
include a note reminding what boot you're asking for, failing to use
padded envelopes.
people on this list, and in the trading community generally, are
incredibly sweet. i've only encountered one person whose really bugged
me, but i'll refrain from pointing fingers, and i've traded upwards of 50
tapes.
good luck and have fun!

well, there are those who may think ani is a sell-out for not singing the
"cover my butt cuz i covet another man's wife" part last night on conan.
but the truth probably is that she had to fit shameless into the time
limits. so something had to go... and if anyone thinks ani is becoming a
sell-out, they should read the article on her in the latest "ms." magazine.
i was much more in love with her after i read that. she is just doing her
own thing like always. she rules. two posts in one day for the
indomitable corinne....

i don't think she's selling out necessarliy. she also did not sing that
part of the song at smith tuesday night, where they certainly wouldn't
bother anybody(: but i was a little weirded out by the light show,
mega-speakers, and an appearance on a talk show. (and that is my
favorite part of the song):...) oh well. she's still ani.

didn't notice at the time, but this morning i was thinking about the
show and wondering if she had sung those lyrics. at the time, i was
too entranced by the fact that i could actually see her (and not the
back of some stupid girl trying to balance herself on the arm-rests

did she seem a little tense?

i've received a few responses to my post and have replied by private
email with an often long winded response, but i wanted to drop a short
note to the list about one part of it. if anyone wants to hear my long
winded response, let me know and i will be happy to send it along through
private email. : )
if you are not interested in this, please feel free to delete, and i am
sorry to waste your time. : )
the intention of my post was to discuss my feelings as a conscientious
objector to the lyrics of least complicated and to whether ali was honest
in his beliefs, not to defend boxing in general. to be honest, i am not
now a boxing fan, and i would agree with just about everything that mat
said about it. i was a fan of ali's though, and continue to be. i would
not say the same for other boxers, such as mike tyson, who i do believe
to be a violent person. i will stand by what i said about boxing being
different than war as well as what i would argue are more violent acts in
other sports, for which i used brawls that take place in baseball games
as an example. (this is where the long winded part would come in ; ) )
what i wanted to respond to is this:
>i'm just hoping to convince someone, anyone, who casually accepts
>what is piped into their homes through the tv to stop and re-evaluate
>what they are watching
i am a pacifist and extremely committed to my beliefs. trust me, i have
thought a great deal about this. i do not take any issue involving
violence lightly. it is possible for a pacifist to participate in, or
watch, contact sports without compromising their beliefs.
> boxing is violence and violence only. violence begets violence.
as far as violence begetting violence, i agree but, in the context of
what is piped into our homes, i think that movies and television shows
that portray violence out of hatred or anger, violence as humorous, or
cold hearted violence, beget violence far more than a sport such as
boxing.
ok, that's enough. if you have additonal comments, please feel free to
direct them to me through personal email. the practice of pacifism in
the real world is a subject that i never tire talking about.
>ha! sorry, harry, i'm not trying to flame you.
no need to apologize, reallly. i totally understand your viewpoint.
peace, : )

have something i don't and see something you would like to have drop me an

*please note*
in the past i have dubbed onto blanks for those who do not have anything to
trade, but right now i am not able to, so please do not send me any requests
of that nature. what i am doing instead is continuing a process of
providing seed tapes to people who are going to set up trees and try to get
as many of the shows in circulation as possible. your patience is appreciated

subject: the great tape debate
hello go-heads and
assorted other tasty treats,
okay, we've been over and over this issue and i think it might be a good idea
to try to bring some closure to it. allison et al. want to know "what's the
crime in asking for extra tapes for dubbing bootlegs?"
there is no crime per se, but we have two camps on this list: those who expect
or ask for blanks, and those (like me and others) who don't.
thos who ask for tapes are not immoral, wretched, nasty human beings. i would
suggest, however, that asking for extra tapes for dubbing is a form of payment,
and personally, i find that to be in conflict with emily and amy's specific
statement that they don't mind if people copy bootlegs as "long as people
aren't making money off of it" (or somehting to that effect). a tape is a
negligible amount of payment, but it is payment just the same.
i don't ask for tapes, and it ain't because i am holier than thou, a great
generous person, or a martyr. its because i am opposed to taking payment...and
because when i was a newbie and starting to collect stuff, very few people
expected me to send them extra tapes. i said to myself in those early days "i'm
gonna return that favor to others someday"....ergo, not asking for extra tapes.
i do always think its fair to ask for a blank of appropriate length, and an
sase. a nice note inside the envelope brightens my day. and sometimes, really
cool people like karra in michigan send a piece of yummy godiva chocolate
along, or a nifty keychain like mj, etc. that's a nice touch, and much
appreciated....certainly never expected or asked for!
so, can we end the debate? pleeeassse? you can ask for extras if you want. i
would suggest its unfair and profit-oriented, but that's just me. do what the
dubber wants, but remember there are oodles of us who dub for free cos it was
done for us.
done with today's diatribe :)

well i think before you complain about the apparent course change, you
should look at the syllabus and who they plan to actually allow to teach
on it. it could well be just a name change. and what is wrong with
broadening the audience anyway? what is wrong with broadening the
course, for that matter? do we teach welsh history exclusively from the
point of nationalists like gwynfor evans and saunders lewis? no! do we
teach middle eastern / islamic history from the point of view of islamic
fundamentalists? of course not (not in the west anyway). why should
any social science be taught *exclusively* from an ideological point of
view?
but then, if you really want to preserve this course, i suggest that you
stop moping around in black and get your union (or whatever your
equivalent is) to either take action to demand that this course is
preserved, or seek some assurances that the content of the course won't be
toned down to suit the 'patriarchal-alpha male types' who apparently run
your university. and if your union is as careerist and corrupt as some
of ours are, maybe you and your 'sisters' could get rid of some of the
careerists and make it work for you?

what voice parts were a&e in their elementary school choir?
the popular answer was that a was an alto, & that e was a soprano. but
that would be the obvious answer, & trivia questions never have obvious
answers. :)
jen & marianne were the only one who really got it right. audrey got it
right too, but only b/c i told her a few weeks ago. sharon &
twb@zycor.lgc.com get prizes for effort. oh, and bebop gets the special
prize b/c her mind is in the gutter... ;)
yay!!! congratulations everyone...

hey there! i was just listening to botby, which i haven't listened to in
months, and was wondering what everyone's favorite track was from it. don't
ask me why. it's just another weird thought from me. mine is a tie between
left me a fool and you and me of the 10,000 wars. i just love em's vocals on
those two songs. she sounds like she's really into them emotionally. i also
love the crowd participation bits in kid fears and pod. makes me feel like
i'm there even more so than galileo and ctf from 1200 curfews. i'm also
beginning to like all along the watchtower a bit more. i didn't like it at
first for some reason. i've always liked the dylan version better. i used to
think amy was just screaming her way through it. now it just sounds better
to me for some reason. have no idea why. anyhow, i'm gonna quit rambling
now. y'all tell me what you think about the album.

friday afternoon and she feels like doing otherwise)

my runner up favorite on there is lmaf, but my absolute favorite is
kidfears, because of the powerful rush n' shivers i get when the audience
starts to sing along during the chorus... mmmmm...love that:-)

i have a copy of a song wendy bucklew played, but i don't have the name
of it, and i'm dying to know. i don't know if she wrote it or if it's a cover.
the lyrics are something like:
you were out like a light
and i watched you sleeping
wonder where you went
it seemed such a long time ago that you let me in
see if it was sacred....
and you say go and play, go and play
if i never did nothing wrong then why would you leave
if i never did nothing wrong then you would have stayed
does anyone know the name of this song?? and, does anyone have the
complete lyrics??
any help would be greatly appreciated.

i believe that is "porch song". (seems like i remember that this was

its on the _true story_ benifit cd released in 1994.

subject: help! ani is stuck in my car! (nigc)
i apologize to all you nice digest people for my nigc, i'll try to keep it
brief.
about 6 months ago i went down to tower and got ani's "like i said" cuz i
hadn't heard her yet, and they didn't have anything more recent of hers,
and there were so many raves about her on this list...well, i gave it one
spin and i hated it! can you believe it? then a few weeks ago i got
dilate, to give her one more try; taped it onto one side of a cassette and
put 'like i said' on the other side, so i could listen in my car. a week
went by, then two...and i can't get myself to take it out of the cassette
deck. i managed to do one morning commute to honor1, but then i had to
put her back in...i'm an ani junkie.
i know, i probably need the ani list for this lament, but i feel better
divulging this to my ig friends than looking like an idiot to the ani list
(which i am not on). maybe i need 12 step too; but ani is still stuck in
my car, and not even a new copy of atlanta pride (thanks sue!) could wrest
her from my sony. i even have to type to the beat of amazing grace, and i
do this weird cypress-hill-looking dance in the car when outta me onto you
comes on...shrinking back to my corner now...

well here's my take on the "shameless" lyric omissions. i don't think it's
for reasons of conforming or selling out, that's just not ani! my only guess
is that perhaps since she's in a serious relationship with a man (i don't
think this falls under the category of delving into her personal life since
she talks openly about it in interviews, i.e. ms. article) the line just
doesn't fit her life anymore. i could be way off on this interpretation
though. i miss the line too!

let's not ferget the ten or so flamers who must post "stop it!!!" flames to
the list cause of the twenty "please can i have a t-shirt too?" posts and
the ten or so "me too?" posters that follow on that "please can i have one
too?" thread.... the twenty counter flamers...and the six or so posters who
try to restore sanity to the list by saying "read the faq list again
*please* people!!!!" ... the four wunnerful posterers who try to spread oil
by creating a new thread...and a partridge in a pear tree.....

subject: beatles songs (igc)
hey y'all! i'm here to admit that i do listen to music other than ig. not
much, but it does happen. i've been a beatles fan for years now, and with
the resurgence of their popularity, i've become an even bigger fan, and i
haven't even gained an ounce! strange huh?
anyhow, my question to the list is this: what beatles song(s) would you like
to hear the indigo girls cover? i've been thinking about it and i've come up
with a few. all you beatles fans out there, let me know!
here's my list:
helter skelter: this would be an unbelievable song for the girls if amy sang
the lead vocal. her voice is absolutely perfect for this song.
i will: a really sweet mccartney love song that would sound great for emily
to sing.
yer blues: another great one for amy to sing lead. really rough blues
i'll follow the sun: they can harmonize on this one! this song really suits
both of the girls' abilities.
she's leaving home: emily can take mccartney's part and amy can take
lennon's, with lush orchestration in the background. beautiful
in my life: another great one they can harmonize. maybe em could play the piano
happiness is a warm gun: with amy on lead, and emily and maybe michelle
malone as background vocals
rocky raccoon: can't decide whether em or amy should sing lead. either one
would do the song justice
two of us: imagine the close harmonies here...once again with amy taking
lennon's part and emily taking mccartney's
that's about all i can think of right now. i'm sure i'll find more i'd love
to hear. the obvious ones are yesterday, eleanor rigby, all you need is love
(ooh that would be good too). what beatles songs would y'all like to hear
them cover?

subject: ig dreams (kinda long)
here's a post i sent way back when the list crashed, earlier in the month.
hey everyone,
i've been havin' a rough day and i thought having some ig time might cheer
me up. here are some ig dreams i've had in the past (anywhere from a week
to a year ago). enjoy!
this first one is the oldest. i can't remember the exact order of
everything. in fact, i'm not sure if it's one or two dreams. so i'll
just write them (1 or 2 dreams) as individual dream sequences/segments...
***
i'm at an ig concert (wow, bet ya didn't expect that! :) the girls are
pretty far away. they're on top of a hill/mound and it is very muddy.
it's muddy where i am too (kinda reminiscent (sp?) of woodstock 2). the
girls are slipping around, singing. i'm slipping around, dancin',
singing. amy keeps ending up away from her mic b/c she's slipping
around so much. she's trying to dance around, but it's too slippy. she
keeps sliding around. but she seems to be having fun. (ok, that's it for
that one. sorry if it was kinda boring)
***
i walk into an auditorium, not that big, not that small. the girls are
suppossed to be playing. there's nowhere to sit but the back row. i'm
kinda bummed about being far away. i sit down, and realize i'm sitting
next to emily. wow! we start talking, something about the performers on
stage. i think to myself, where there's emily, there's amy. i look on
the other side of emily, and there's amy. cool!! i think my gf is over
there, too. a man from the stage announces to the crowd that they are
distributing peanut brittle for everyone in the audience. ok, whatever, i
think. some boxes are given to the people in the front, and they are
passed back. i didn't realized i cared, but i started to worry that there
wouldn't be any peanut brittle left by the time a box reached me. i think
i start to complain to emily. the box reaches me and there's not much in
it. i think i better only take a little. emily, laughing, tells me to
take a lot. so i do. then there are all the rest of the boxes coming to
our row and we have tons of peanut brittle. we're laughing cause it's so
funny. i think emily even brings out her own personal box, from i don't
know where. then emily gets up and leaves, b/c she's got to perform soon.
i look over to try to talk to amy. but she's not there. she had already
left. my girlfriend is there. i sit next to her, kinda depressed.
***
i'm outside with my girlfriend. we had just come from an outside show.
tons of people are streaming out to go home. there's a football field
next to where the girls had just played. i look and see two people
sitting there, next to the track. it's amy and emily. i wonder why noone
else is crowding around them. they have to recognize them, they just saw
them. i figure they don't know they're there, because all the people are
on the other side of these bleachers. so i walk over to amy and sit down
with a cd, i think. i give it to her to sign. i say something to her,
but i have not clue now what. she's says something back. again, i don't
know what, but it was very casual, friendly.
---
this last dream (following) was list-induced. i think i was reading about
people having encounters with the girls, and thought about how i would
feel if i met them. this mixed with my own excitement about the prospect of
the new album, a new touring season, and seeing the girls again! but
still, a close encounter would probably be too much for me. i'm very much
into not having myself paid attention to, by anyone, let alone ig.
anyway...
***
i'm at a bar/club. i'm way in the back. no one interesting is playing,
and i don't expect anyone interesting to play (i.e. the ig :) so i'm
there with my gf and the girls walk on stage and start playing. i am
really surprised, but move quickly a few feet towards the stage. i
totally abandon my gf, but think, she knows i must be here, she knows i
couldn't stay in the back. this place is pretty small, barely 100 people
in the audience, and about full. i'm only about 20 feet away from amy.
i'm watching her play, totally enjoying myself. next thing i know, amy
looks right at me, my eyes looking at her eyes. i can't admit that this
is happening, or i'll freak out. so i pretend it's not. i keep on
looking, just as i had, as if i didn't know she was looking at me. i
realize it's totally random, but still, *amy is looking at me* i don't
remember anything else about the dream, maybe that was the end, maybe
not...
in the next-to-last segment i actually get to meet amy. this has only
happened in one other dream. usually i always meet emily, and try
fruitlessly to talk to amy. weird. i don't feel as obsessed as my dreams
make me seem. my last dream seems pretty realistic for me. i feel kind
of selfish that i want to have free reign (sp?) to look at the girls, but
would certainly not want that kind of attention paid to myself. but, i am
shy, and they are famous. i really am happy keeping my distance, however.
:) well, thanks everyone. this is certainly a thread that will never die.
:) at least as long i as keep dreaming :)
peace, love, and happiness,
melissa

michelle malone and bds promo tape 1996, $2.00
disappear fear promo tape of df, $2.00
i was amazed with all this stuff, especially all the vinly ig. it is
so rare to find it where i live, so i went nutso. the mm/bds tape i
beleive is a promo of bird on fire, which is yet to be released, because
there are a number of songs on it that she played when she opened for ig
on the demo tour and on her club tour she is currently on.
i thought it was really rare to find ig on vinyl, is it or was i really
lucky? i am also getting a ig ep, from someone that has ctf, kf, cs, pod.
i am anxious to see what it is, and if it is of any value.
does anyone have any idea of record shows that occur and go city to city?
i would love to go to one and see what i can come up with, so if anyone
has info they could give me i would really apprectiate it. thanks a lot.
take care and peace!

not exclusively. amy also plays a guitar made by the atlanta luthier,
everett (can't remember his first name) and a fender stratocaster; emily
also plays a dobro and a yamaha electric jazz guitar.

upset about it. my family is going down to georgia tuesday night and we
really want to get in touch with her to let her know there are alternatives -
anyone in the family would take her in and help her, i can't stand to think
of her alone like that. we're going to atlanta and i was wondering : does
anybody know of any places where people hang out, or any places we might be
able to find her. i just want to talk to her, and hopefully bring her back
to someone's home, even if hers is unbearable. please, anybody who could
help, email me. thanks, y'all...happy thanksgiving, almost...good stuff can

hey y'all,
okay, i'm finally done with all my midterms, and i'm feeling quite fine
because i'm finished with all of that crap, at least for a while, and
i'm finally getting rid of this nasty cold, so who better to share my joy
and happiness than with my fellow listers, many of whom are precious
little newbies and all (well, i think that i still kind of qualify as a
newbie). and this list has been mighty kind with me, y'all are so sweet

are going through their little identity crises, anybody. the whole
outbreak of generosity has gotten me into the holiday spirit and all, just
wanted to tell y'all that i love you guys...

to build):

hmm, so can anyone else figure out what michael lorant is saying during live
performances of this train (revised)? i'm convinced it's a jewish prayer,
but i can't tell which one. one time, it sounded like the she'ma, but on
days of wine and roses (thanks beth!) it seems to start with the hebrew
"baruch ata adonai.." ("blessed are you lord, our g-d")
can anyone familiar with judaism help me out? i know on the album they were
reading names, but i think it's different on most of the live versions.
thanks!

subject: nigc: ani on conan, an explaination.....
hello to all!
sorry for the nigc, but since ani gave an explaination at her show
in boston about the ommission of the verse in shameless on the conan
o'brien show i thougt i would share it, because there was a lot of
speculation about it on the list.
ani said that they only had 3 1/2 minutes to play it, so they had
to shorten it so the network could squeeze in another laundry
detergent ad. my guess is that when she skipped the verse at the
smith show, she was trying to practice a shortened version and see
how long it was, but that is just a guess.
she did sing all the verses in boston on sat, and even rocked it out
in what she called the extened dance mix.
hope that helps clear things up and settles the ideas of ani caving in

..having just returned fresh from the ani show of this evening (hi anj!!!), i
can emphatically say she rocked, she dominated she kicked arse! it was amazing!
she played for 2.5 hours (maybe cause it was the lat night of the tour, she was
in obvious great spirits, laughing and cracking jokes and even messing up songs
and still laughing!), with a intermission between sets. she was
wonderful....sara lee was amazing too...and of course after playing
for 2+ hours to a fanatical crowd, she came out and did "when doves cry" a
capella with andy and sara for the final encore. god, it was just priceless. if
you like her, even a little, you must see her live. she truly is commander in

well well well, guess who's back on the list. it's me! lorindigo! i'm back
(much celebration ensues). i've moved, i've started my new job, and most
importantly, i've finally gotten a modem, and so here i am again. hi all,
i've missed you, and i thought for my first post back on the list i'd
sort of come in with a bang. i don't know if this has ever been posted
before, but _i've_ never seen it. are you ready for this? i've
transcribed the strange fire solo. i sat down one night and hammered this
out. i'm posting this mostly because i need help with it, so guitarists
take note! this is _very_rough_, and i have almost no timing indications.
also, there are lots of extraneous notes emily throws in that i didn't
always pick up on, and there's probably some garble in here from amy's
guitar. also, the end is actually a mess because i know i'm hearing two
guitars, and i've transcribed what i'm hearing from _both_ of them, so
there's actually part of it that can't really be played by one person alone.
add in the fact that she plays it differently on sf and 1200c, and you
see how rough this is.
i probably shouldn't be posting this until i've had some more time to
work on it a bit more and add some timing indications, but to be
perfectly honest i about drove myself banana's with it when i first
transcribed it, and i can't bear the thought of going through that again
right now. i'd be more than happy to hear anything and everything that
anyone wants to say about this. work with me and we can get this solo
spiffied up and we'll repost the final version to the list.
have at it guitarists!

notes in [] are what's heard most clearly over the 9-0-8 repeated triplet

it's really possible to play both things at once, so the timing for those
two bits are completely separate, which is why the [] notes look kinda
scrunched in there.

ok, so that's it. i really want to see what y'all can do with this. sorry
it's so rough and hard to follow, but hey, i'm only here to get the ball
rolling.
in other news: i saw shawn mullins last night. he's my main man now. ;)
he rocks, go see him when he gets to your town. actually, i was
particularly glad to see him playing here because it seems st. louis is a
bit of a folk vacuum. i guess now my fellow st. louisans and i will have
to change that situation.
happy to be here,

ps, max of newsgroup fame is here to say hi: hi :)

hi all,
i just listened to three cd versions of "this train revised" live
and i agree that michael is saying something on the dowar cd and it could be
the barucha...but i could have been biased into thinking that having read
abigail's post first...
but i would have to say the odds of having the shema in the song
would be pretty slim...jews tend to hold this prayer as one of the most
powerful and sacred of the liturgy and knowing how amy and emily feel about
respecting all religions, i would doubt it would be said in the song. the
shema is typically said only within the presence of a minyan and usually
recited standing. of course this reflects the conservative and liberal
orthodox schools of thought and not the more free-thinking reform and
reconstruction judaism. (don't worry everyone, i won't go into the
differences....)
just my thoughts on abigail's question...i'll try to listen to some
cassette versions tomorrow...
peace (or shalom),
jen

when they came to alaska, i saw that their 12 string's and i thing i saw

hey all,
just for info sake, amy supposedly called up 99x (local atlanta radio
station) and said she was going to be protesting some forestry project in
atlanta today at 1pm. i didn't get all the details, but it should be cool.
also, went to see the new star trek movie on saturday. (it was awesome,
definitly better than the last one). anyways, i saw michael lorant, sheila
doyle, and some other local yokels come out of the earlier showing of star
trek. i kept thinking back to earth jam 95 when amy was wearing that red
star trek: the next generation t-shirt. what a woman!
happy thanksgiving, ya'll.

all chord symbols are one measure.
^ is an accented beat
m is a muted beat
the following signifies a triplet:

when it says (stop) hit the first chord of the measure and then start up on
the appropriate chord where it says (go)
numbers in parenthesis (e.g., (0) ) signify a note that is not neccesarily
there all the time, but give the full chord identity.

verse (same as intro, chord symbols correspond):
(a) (a)
my friends they wash the windows
(d) (e)
and they shine in the sun
(a)
they say wake up early in the morning sometime
(d) (e)
and see what a beautiful job we've done
(a) (a)
i said let's put on some tunes sing-a-long
(d) (e)
and do a little all day
(a) (a)
go down to the riverside, take off our clothes (shoes)
(d) (e)
and wash these sins away
chorus (same as verse, guitar wise):
(a) (a)
and the river said, la la la, it said
(d) (e)
shame on you
(a) (a)
and the river said, la la la, it said
(d) (e)
shame on you
(emily on banjo)
i go down to chicano city park
cause it makes me feel so fine
and when the weeds go down
you can see up close
in the dead of the wintertime
oh, when the summer comes everything's in bloom
and you wouldn't know it's there
(stop) and the white folks would like to pretend it's not
(go) but their music's in the air
at this chorus, instead of playing the corresponding tab, play the full
chord at the symbol.
you can hear them singing, la, la, la, they said
shame on you
you can feel them dancing, la, la, la, they said
shame on you
my friend tanner she says, you know, me and jesus
we're of the same heart
the only thing that keeps us distant
is that i keep fucking up
i said come on down to chicano city park
wash your blues away
(stop) and when the beautiful ladies walk right by
(go) you know i never know what to say
and now they're singing, ooh la, la, la...
shame on you
and now we're dancing, ooh la, la, la...they said
shame on you
shame on you
keep the jam going... the same 1-4-5, a-d-e thing... this is the solo, but
it's so damned distorted i can't get it at all... anyone with a better
recording or a better ear, revise this sucker... :)
(stop) let's go road-block tripping in the middle of the night
(go) up in gainesville town
(stop) there'll be blue lights flashing down a long dirt road
(go) they ask me to step out
(stop) they said we've been looking for illegal immigrants
(go) can we check your car
(stop) i said you know it's funny
(go) i think you were on the same boat back in 1694
and i said, ooh, la, la, la...
shame on you
and i said, ooh, la, la, la...
shame on you...
shame on you
fade out...
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
not all that bad to write... now lessee whether any get's the song right
from this... it's probably the same thing y'all have been doing for
whatever anyway... special thanks goto: jen lucero, for the lyrics,

the birthday goddess does not feel exactly, shall we say, worthy of the
name at the moment. she forgot several birthdays on account of trying to
be organized with the list (of birthdays), but there were several
different ones: on the email, at home, on paper... it was all messed up.
so--
big huge apologies
to everybody who was missed. very very sorry!!!! the bg will do her
darndest to get back on track.
here's the ones she missed (and if there are any more since the beginning
of november, she may hafta just _cry_) :
november 11
dsrogers@utkux.utcc.utk.edu (dave rogers)
happy 19th, dave!!
the less i seek my source for some definitive
the close i am to fine
november 21
lorbrink@iaw.com (lori brinkman)
happy 29th, lori!!
in the ink of an eye i saw you breathe
through the hunger i could hear you scream
solid to the air i breathe
open-eyed, fast asleep
falling softly as a dream
no footsteps ringing in your ear
ragged down worn to the skin
warrior raging have no fear
also, is november 21 somebody else's bday? (according to lori)
plus also, the bg forgot that her fantabulous stepmom, meg, turned 47 on
saturday. any bday greetings to meg will hafta be telepathic, cos she's
not online.
and:
november 24
kdeis@phoenix.kent.edu (kellie deis)
happy 21st, kellie!!
well the world seems spent, and that old congress
has no good idea who the masses are
well i'm one of them, and i'm among friends...
also:
assms6@uaa.alaska.edu (scott m. slone)
happy 28th, scott!!
when you learn to love yourself
you will dissolve all the stones that are cast...
this seems an opportune moment to mention again that the birthday list is
not some mysterious, elite group that you can see but not be on. it is
for everybody!!! the idea is to create community, not exclude people.
but scott must've joined the list after the last time the bg asked for
people to send in their birthday info. what happened to me was that
mountaingirl6 (rachel?) privately emailed me soon after i had posted
(saying that i was a newbie), telling me about the bday list's existance,
asking for my info. i hesitated b/c i was not yet sure about the list's
warm, happy atmosphere, and thought it was maybe some hacker person out to
rob me or whatever. of course that was wrong, but that's why i don't do
it that way (also that's more work ;}). so: i promise to try to remember
to ask for bday info from all interested parties every week, so noone gets
left out.
as far as i know there are no birthdays today, so ta ta for now, y'all.
peace and love and no hurt feelings,
the bg

hi all,
i'm just writing about a friend of mine. i recently introduced her to
the indigo girls and she really loves them. the tape i made her has
been playing 24/7. well, this morning her dad died from cancer. i've
noticed the request to mail friends of listees letters after bad things
have happened and i was hoping that you guys might do the same thing
here. her name is cheryl and her e-mail address is cheryl@ou.edu . i
think that this would help her out a lot if she received a few e-mails
of sympathy and i would really appreciate it. thanks a lot everyone.

it is really hard to hear what he is saying, but he definitely starts out
with " baruch ata adonai, eloheinu melech haolam which means blessed is our
god , ruler of the universe.. i'm not sure what he says next, but it sounds
like it could be this part from the end of the mourners kaddish that goes
"oseh shalom bimeromav, hu yaaseh shalom aleinu, ve'al kol yisrael, veimeru
amen" which says.. may he who causes peace to reign in the high heavens, let
peace descend on us, on all israel, and all the world, and let us say amen...
so i'm not sure if that is what he says, but it would be very relevant since
it comes at the end of the mourners kaddish.. so i dunno... take it as you

glad you asked!!!!!
hi all... this is carrie from new mexico. i've made some wonderful
friends on the list and i expect to meet many more. to answer sasha's
question....i taped the las cruces show on dat(thanks unknowingly to my
public radio station at which i am employed) and it came out fairly
good. i was in the second row of bodies in the small venue at which the
girls played here in las cruces. sooooooo...... after some great
experiences in the whole "boot" trading scene..i feel comfy offering the
boot to the list. i'm sorry if it seems wayyyyyyy overdue but i wanted
to make sure i did this right.
so.. here's the deal.
the dat (digital audio tape, for the technologically impaired) recording
will take up a 90 minute cassette. the playlist is:
least complicated, hand me downs, it's alright, kind friend, get out the
map, tried to be true, winthrop, don't give that girl a gun, everything
in it's own time, bury my heart, caramia, chiapas bound, ghost, cut it
out, reunion, galileo, shame on you, and closer to fine.
if you're interested, email me back with "las cruces boot" in the subject
line. depending on the response, branches may have to be set up. if you
can be a branch, please let me know. also...if you have anything ig
boots to trade, also tell me. i'm slowly building up my boot collection
and would like to work out trades. i'm going away for the thanksgiving
holiday so i will try to respond to those of you prior to leavingthat i
received your message. i will set up a tape tree early next week.
so....respond right away if you want to get in on the bootleg trading frenzy.
i look forward to hearing from all of you.

hey y'all,
just wanted to put in my 2 cents about ani difranco. my best friend
loves ani and a few years ago we used to drive around and she'd blast ani
and sing like crazy. i hated it! i did not like ani. i'd yell at her to
turn it off and put in some ig damnit! then, one day, ani came to town. i
went to the show because everyone else was going and it was gonna be this
big social event. then this tiny little woman in leather pants came on
stage in these giant boots and sang like no one else! i was hooked
instantly!
this year, my 30th birthday present to myself was a flight to san
francisco (from nm) to see ani play at the maratime hall. i couldn't get
enough and rented a car and drove up to sacramento for her show there the
next night.
if you don't think you like ani, go see her live. it will change
your mind (and your life). it did mine.

i don't have the tape but the oseh shalom is a relatively widespread
verse... it's used in many different tunes... as for the mourners kaddish,
it does not begin with baruch ata adonai... it's in a different, though
similar, language, aramaic... it starts yitgadal v'yitkadash shm'e rabah,
v'almah... and on and on, it's the only prayer i can tolerate, actually,
but that's besides the point... the point is, if you hear him go into
yitgadal v'yitkadash shm'e rabah, then you know it's the kaddish... also,
the reform shema, at least, in my temple is along the lines of "shema
yisrael adonai elohenu, adonai echad. baruch shem kvod malchuto le'olam
va'ed" that could be the baruch ata adonai you heard... there are millions
of things that start that way though... see ya round,

sounds like they are trying to get the fan club thingy organized a little

subject: it's time to get out the.....
okay kids, i think i am almost in position to start working on the
(second) map live tape. for those of you who missed the conversation
before, i'm hoping to compile a tape of the stuff that will be on the new
album from all the shows in the demo tour, with some help from some little
elves (sunny and sundara, hope you don't mind that you just became elves).
hopefully it will be ready to "seed" by the beginning of january.
here's where you all come in!
i want to know what y'all think the song order should be. here are the
songs (i think it's all of them) that will be on this tape, hopefully
mimicking the cuts from the new album::
don't give that girl a gun
get out the map
leeds
hey kind friend
cara mia
it's alright
winthrop
cut it out
chiapas bound
shame on you
remember everything i told you
(maybe?> blood quantum)
the reason bq is in parentheses is because it is on honor1 and is unlikely
to be on the next album; however when people who don't have honor1 hear it
live they might be compelled to get honor1!
what we need is some lists of what order the album should be in. let us
know if you think these are the correct songs, if i've missed any, or if
you think some of these won't be there/shouldn't be there for any reason.
let us know why you think your order should be it. let us know if it's
what you think the order for the "real album" will be, or if it's what you
hope it will be. and most important, let us know what you think the title
should be for this little live tape.
the point of this is to generate ideas for this project, but if the posts
get to be so many that we swamp the list, we may have to go to a plan b to
ease the load (i dunno, but i don't want to be responsible for hostility
on the list). i think the whole thing--song order contest and the tape
itself--will help tide us over until the album comes out.
on yer mark-get set-go.

my program error noise is emily saying "oh i fucked it up... hold

my "you have new mail" sound for eudora is emily going "whooo hoo!"

y'all -
if anybody wants a copy of a slightly kludgy tapeliner program, for pc,
(not for mac!), *and* you can accept a file attachment, email me & i'll
send it. it's called casemaker, & the only problem is, sometimes you
can't fit as many titles on it as you'd want - but you *can* extend the
titles onto the inside of the liner, or *only* have it print on the
inside if you like.
since i don't have a whole lot of boots yet, or decent dubbing
capability, glad to find something i can finally do!

hey guys,
sorry, susan, i know nothing 'bout mac software ... but fyi for anybody else,
the caslinr38 program is shareware, if you register it costs you $12. so i
guess i'm free to distribute it, as long as i send all the registration info
to anybody. if you want to send me a blank disk i'll copy it for you. not

well, i had a meeting for my history class today, and it wasn't the usual

first, and my name's amy, so i said "amy". then the girl next to me said,
"emily." i thought that was cool.
plus, i have to write a paper for english, and i was trying to decide
between writing it on wuthering heights or to the lighthouse. while i was
thinking this i was listening to disc 1 of 12cc on shuffle, and as soon as
i decided to do it on to the lighthouse, then i hear out of my stereo,
"we're gonna do a song that i wrote for virginia woolf..." so i guess i
made the right decision!

subject: sf question
i was driving home from the grocery store this evening and decided to turn
on the radio (instead of listening to a tape). as i tuned in the station i
heard some very familiar chords and thought, "strange fire. no, wait, i'm
listening to the radio it's not sf it's ... yes! it's strange fire. a live
version of strange fire. on the radio!"
of course i could not contain my excitement, so i turned it up loud. very
loud.tears of joy filled my eyes (no exaggeration here). i sang and yes,
karrie, my windows were rolled up!
so here's my question: what version of the song was i listening to? it was
live and amy said, "thanks, y'all. i love you," or something like that at
the end of the song. the audience noise was pretty faint. t'was not the 1200
c version.
oh sagacious listees, please impart your wisdom :)
thanks,
bon

today i was driving around in my flower delivery van (thats my job) and
i saw an ig related item.
in eugene, where i live, recycling is a big deal (as it should be) and
we have these big colorful trucks that collect recycle. the trucks are
called "recycle zoo", they have six or so sections designated for
certain materials and named after animals, for example: cardboard
ardvark, and others i can't remember...anyway one of them is paper tiger
( you know from love will come to you) i know this is reaching but
still! so for the rest of the afternoon guess what i sang?!?!
another thing i do since i'm trapped in a car all day long...i don't
have a tape deck and they never play ig on the radio here so when a good
song can't be found i turn down the radio and pick and ig song! these
silly little things make my day that much brighter ( or "indigo", if you
will) ;)

(those now looking at thirty as an age that doesn't seem too old or who have
looked at it as it flew past a few years ago) still around?
i hear rumblings, reviewing my first day of posts, of a new album and
something called a demo tour. (if this tour hit nyc after 9/1 or south

in the world then. damn this writer's life that keeps me quiet in a room.
but, then not really.
i have been going back to the old tapes these days, worn out by 1200 and my

and here i am, back on the list, seeing all these newbies (and a fond

the music festival that takes place labor day weekend in seattle is
'bumbershoot.' a lot of people think it's bumpershoot, but bumbershoot
refers to an umbrella. appropriate name for a festival that takes place
in seattle weather. :)
specifically:
bumbershoot (bmber-sht) noun
an umbrella.

there shouldn't be a problem.
it is for ibm comp. computers, i'll keep my eye out for anything for mac.
aol users -- check the software center, they have about 13 different liner

anyone interested can e-mail me and i'd be happy to make a copy for you.

susan, who owns a mac (yessssss!) wondered about a tape liner
program. the one i use is the template that comes with pagemaker.
pagemaker is pricey, but if you need it for work (as i do), there
are many cool things it does besides flyers, newsletters, et al.
i'm workin' on scannin' cool stuff for my cassette liners.
the cassette liner is over in the additions menu.
hope this helps.

i have a big question to all of you in san francisco...one of my
friends is going to the agu conference there in mid-december and she
said that if she knew what to get and where to get it, she'd bring me
back some ig stuff. so does anyone know where and what ig things (ie
t-shirts, posters, stickers etc) are sold in san francisco, what
prices are like and how someone who was new to the city would be able
to find stuff. i'd really appreciate any info...i have no ig
posters or t-shirts and am feeling very bare!!
thanks

hey y'all...
i'm still a newbie on the list so go easy on me...i have a question. i saw
4.5 at circuit city for around $24, and i want to know before i spend that
much on it if that's a good price for it. is it worth $24 if it is a fair
price?
email me privately 'cause i'm sure this has been discussed before i joined. =)
just wanted to say also that i'm thankful for the wonderful people on this
list who have taken pity ;) on newbies and helped them start a boot
collection without asking for anything for themselves. i'm also thankful
for this list period. it's really helped me to learn more about ig and more
about some issues that i didn't know much about.

hey all-
i've not seen anything on the atlanta artists list about the fact that
wendy bucklew is moving from atlanta to southern california at the end of
december. she's got a few more shows between now and then:
november 27 lulu's, atlanta
december 11 lulu's, atlanta
december 15 red light cafe, atlanta
the 15th of dec is her last atlanta before she moves..
she said at her show the other night that her cd would be out sometime in
january and that she would be doing a tour to support it sometime.
take care all,

it's from a new complition cd called "woman live from mountain stage". it
came out last month and other tracks include ani's "ego's like hairdos" and
dar williams' "when i was a boy". it is in stores now and is on the blue
plate music label.
i know this because there is a radio station here in milwaukee that has a
"women's music" show on sunday nights. it's really cool because it's the
only chance i get in this town to hear ig, ferron, ani, kristen and the
like on the radio.
any how, when i tuned in to the show this past sunday, the dj was reading
the names of the songs she had just played the previous segment. one of the
songs was strange fire. i was bummed that i missed it but then thought,
"mountain stage? what's that?" well a web search took me to
<http://www.telalink.net/~ohboy/bpm_artists.html> where i got more info on
the cd.

hey all,
came across the latest isue of billboard mag, and the illustrious amy ray
has a small picture on the front page, right next to chuck d. :) its an
article about artists that get their music and themselves involved in
political issues. there's also a commentary on how much influence
musicians really have...ani's got her pic for that article.
have a great thanksgiving, all...

hi all,
i checked out the poster you mentioned. i realize i've been absent for a
long time, so i don't know what the latest run of "you know you're an
obsessed ig fan when..." posts was like, but we've had this thread
before, and _somewhere_, _someone_ has an archive (i think) of literally
dozens of these things (and yes, they were hilarious.) what's on the
poster so far is great, but there should be more more more! who kept that
list before? was it kate r-w? (of course, i'm no help cuz i can't
remember any of 'em.) oh well.
