the song was written in winthrop, mass. emily mentioned this specfically
at the newport folk festival. that winthrop is indeed right on the
water.

        well i will have to say that i am going to bragg!!! hee hee  a
few years ago i went to nashville tennessee.  i was playing with a band
at the time, and i was there to copywrite, and record a song.  while i
was there, i needed to get myself a guitar that really had the sound that
i was looking for....plus i was going to play at the "blue bird" so i
needed a nice looking guitar as well!   i took myself on down to "gruhn
guitars".  while i was there, i rubbed shoulders with john denver..haha
and well....anyways i met him here in alaska a few years back when i was
at my friends house for dinner.  so while i was hanging with him chatting
he told the guy helping him to take me to the back room.  there i was in
shock!  fresh virgin guitars...some not even put together!  so it was
then that i got to pick out my  rosewood and pine guitar.  she cost my
$1,800 with out being put together, and would'nt you know it!  john
picked up the $450.00 to put it together and furnish it.  that is the
best moment i have ever had in my music career, that no longer exsists
due to hearing problems.  how ever i still hold my prised guitar.  bye
the way it is a fender with inlayed mother of pearl, and silver keys.

        i wish that i could go to that christmas party that you all are
having and play some ig's tunes...i have not forgot the count of the beat
to thier music.  currently i have taken up the drums again, i can feel/hear
those much better!   gosh i wish i could still hear those tunes!

yes and there are *great* guitars which cost far less than that. try
looking for the lesser-known companies and luthiers, like lowden and t.j.
thompson. these companies put more into craft and less into cosmetics
(who needs abalone, anyway?).

in response to the pacific northwest party (jealous, very jealous), i would
just like to let you all know that ben and i are having amy day today.  yep,
thats right.  we are going to overdose on videos, cd's, boots pictures, and
yapping about our amy ray!  (dont get upset all of you emily fans, emily day
is next week!!!!)

hello all.  just wanted to post a bit and introduce myself.  my name
is maren and i've been an ig fan since...i guess since the eponymous
album came out.  i quickly had a friend dub *sf* for me after that.
sad to say, i've *never* been to an ig concert.  okay, pick your
chins up off the floor.  unfortunately, i've never had any resource
to tell me where and when the concerts are.  but now i've found
you guys, and i am sooooo happy.  um, do i have to tell you what my
favorite albums/songs are and why?  got any newbie rituals i have to
perform?  well, tell me if you do.  otherwise, i'll just kick back
and observe for a while until i get into the swing of what you do
here.

hey, did y'all know that when they originally filmed the last scene in
that flick, that susan sarandon leaned over and kissed geena on the lips
right before the big "you know what" (i don't want to ruin the movie for
anyone who hasn't seen it)? that scene got cut from the released version.

they may have had boyfriends and slept with boys, but (thanks to my
thesis work and the many of the responses from women on this list), thelma
and louise may have later identified as lesbians.  :)  they were dykes by
the end!  :)  hee hee.  wishful thinking.  maybe they should've made the

well, here we are at amy day...it rocks!

we're eating chips and watching ig...earlier we went to the bookstore to find
the progressive mag, but, no go. they dont have it. what is up with that?
anyway, i am going to be evicted because ben keeps insisting on singing at
the top of his lungs...later, we'll light the amy candle and do the holy amy
dance.

ok, i sent a message to listserve(maybe it's listserv--i'll try
that)@netspace.org that said "signoff indigo-girls" and it was returned
to me. i hate it when people send messages like this, but i thought i
knew everything and i don't know how to find the faq.

now that that's over with.  i am connected to my school's server long
distance from my house (mom & dad are going to kill me)  i got 246
messages.  now i understand the complaints about bandwidth, but before i
go, i have to tell you about my ig dream.

i had an algebra final @ 8 wednesday morning and i dreamt a & e were
resident assistants in my dorm.  i told e that i had a final @ 8 and
then (thinking i was smart and cool) said, "you know, i spent 4 yrs
prostrate to the higher mind?".  she gave me a weird look and said, "i
know, i wrote the song."  well, i followed her around while she was
doing roomchecks acting like a, well, um, obsessed fan?  i hope that i
wouldn't be that annoying in real life.  man, my brother just read this
and gave me a stupid look--i think he's jealous.  as soon as i figure
out how to sign off, i will be in ig hibernation until january 14.  have
a great xmas and a happy new year!  i am sending out my blank tapes
asap, sorry for the delay, but $ doesn't grow on trees.

well, the evening is here...and amy day is nearly over.  sad.  its been great
though.  cant really say that i have overdosed though.  i could probably go
on for a few more hours.  the amy cookies came out great.  we even put little
black glasses on some.

anyway, i wish you all could have been here, and as sundara and susan
know...when i win the lottery, we're all going on the road together. :)

hi everyone

in my delerious state of studying for my 6 final exams next week (yuck) i
started wondering something instead of concentrating on my phase diagrams.
if this has been brought up before i whole-heartedly apoligize; i haven't
been on the list that long. (yay newbies!) and this little "hypothesis" of
mine is only based on 2 people, so it could be way off.

anyway, amy ray is my favorite girl.  and my roommate's favorite is emily.
and whenever we play any of their cd's, i always sing along with amy and she
always sings emily's part.  is it just our own little world, or is there some
actual correlation between what part people sing along with and who they like
best?  just an interesting little point to ponder...

ok then, good night to everyone. it's too late for me to stay up and try to
be coherent now. tomorrow i'll learn all about eutectoids (hi miss cac) and
incongruent melting and all that other wonderful stuff that i'm going to have

actually, it *was* legit, but now they are overwhelmed, and they don't

i remember four years ago, the rock for choice show was the day before the
ignaural (sp?) and both the ig and me performed, i think i have a partial
tape actually, but anyway -- the opportunity has arisen that i may, more
than likely, be down in dc for the ceremonies (has anyone heard who is
performing ??? tracy chapman??? please?!?) but if my schedule works out i'd
love to go -- if ani is there cool, but how/when do tixs go on sale??
    and another thing....i was the first fan of sbm,  she got me my ticket to
hampton beach, then fedexed it to me! cool huh?
    of course, if anyone else is thinking of making the trip down, and needs
someone to split gas and tolls, let me know.  i will also be going down to
dc on 1/8 for a rally against the legalization of assisted suicide -- if
anyone wants to meet up, i know dc about as well as i know atlanta -- which
is pretty good, but i know boston better than either of them and know nyc
less than any of them.

well, it's that time of year again... time to reflect on the many cds
you've purchased, and separate the wheat from the chaff... here's my best
of list:

1) indigo girls, 1200 curfews. an amazing live double-cd, an obvious
labor of love. includes many songs not found on their cds, and comments
in the liner notes from each of the girls describing the songs or the shows
they came from.

2) ani difranco, dilate. this one's a bit of a departure for ani, with
industrial and hip-hop influences among others, but no less brilliant for
it. the lyrics are as amazing as ever, and the music alternately rocks
hard and swings mellow.

3) aimee mann, i'm with stupid. aimee's one of the best pop songwriters
ever. see her in my artist spotlight at
http://www.clark.net/pub/indigo/music.html for more info.

4) shawn colvin, a few small repairs. long-awaited return to recording her
own songs, and well worth the wait. some of her best songs are here.

5) september 67, lucky shoe. shannon worrell and kristin asbury are local
(charlottesville, va) artists made good. with backers like dave matthews
and david lowery (cracker), they've finally got this major label release
out. worrell's vocals may remind you of shawn colvin, and the harmonies
with kristin are to die for. quirky electric guitars, unique rhythms, and
great songs differentiate this from other folk-rock fare.

hey carolyn thanks for saying more clearly what i was getting at when i
responded to mark's post re: thelma and louise. of course thay were
lesbians, that was the whole point of the story!! regardless of who they
slept with in the film...it was a love story and it was cool and groovy.

yeah, i totally agree...i think though, that as i have gotten a little
older my poems and other art stuff have gotten meloower too, i think
its not just being wold weary but also having more and different
perspectives on yourself and the world...i love amy all the time, and
i still love her passion, even a little mellowed out.

is amy mellowing?  yes, of course she is . . . but in a good way . . . she
has been for awhile.  example: on nomads you find things like 1*2*3 and
pushing the needle and hand me downs that are real passionate, real intense,
sort of darkish songs.  but then you look at world falls, which isn't like
anything else of hers from nomads or ig . . . then we move on to rites . . .
cedar tree, joking, jonas, even 3 hits; all sort of mellowed . . . i don't
have so (yet), but i've got 4.5 and reunion and touch me fall seem pretty
mellowed from where she stared from (even though tmf has a ton of distortion
. . . and i digress . . .)  and now we look at things like hey kind friend
and don't give that girl a gun . . . so mellow . . . but if you look soley at
the lyrics it's easier to see it's more of a maturing than a negative
regression.  it also seems to me that with every album emily's voice gets
higher . . . whole 'nother e-mail in that one . . . alright, the reason i'm
babbling on like and idiot is because i have a (naive) question and i wanted
to disguise it as something intelligent.  a while back, on that anne of green
gables thread, someone said something like "i don't think they're lesbians,
but they were more than just good friends.  more of a boston relationship."
i guess i'm real innocent and out of it, or something, but what is a boston
relationship?  ohhhh, i'm red with embarrassment . . . i just need to know or

newcommer to this list.  i am also relatively(sp?) new to the music of
ig (i've been a fan for about 2 years-the first song i heard was "touch
me fall" and that was enough to get me hooked).  i do have all their
epic releases, jsc, and honor, but i am looking to start up a boot
collection.  would anyone with information on where i could score some

sorry to waste the bandwidth, y'all, but i just had to gloat.  see, i work
nights at a taco bell (gaaack!), and after we close, we put tapes in the
stereo, and rock out while we clean up.  well, the other night, i put in a
dub of indians, nomads, saints (and a bad dub at that...it cuts out at the
end of the girl with the weight of the world in her hands!!!).  about 5
minutes after i pushed play, i had two of my co-workers humming along, and
kinda fumbling their way through the choruses.  this was about 4 nights ago.
last night, one of the people who was humming and fumbling asked me if i
brought my ig tape with me.  when i said yes, his reaction was "right on!!"

just had to gloat!:)

at the risk of sounding like a student who wrote a paper on this very
topic (which i am, and did, but sooooo tired of academics), i'll try and
help so you don't go crazy :)

"the term 'boston marriage' was used in late 19th-century new england to
describe a long-term monogamous relationship between 2 otherwise
unmarried women.... whether these unions sometimes or often included sex
we will never know, but we do know that these women spent their lives
primarily with other women, they gave to other women the bulk of their
energy and attention, and they formed powerful emotional ties with other
women. if their personalitites could be projected to our times, it is
probable that they would see themselves as 'women-identified women,' ie,
what we would call lesbians, regardless of the level of their sexual
interests." (from lillian faderman's suprassing the love of men - and i
absolutely refuse anything that more resembles a footnote!)

and just to cloud the issue a bit, see lesbians didn't exist back then...
cause society didn't recognize that women could be sexual without men.
anything like a physical relationship between women was considered
not erotic or "practice" for marriage with a man.

so sarah orne jewett and annie fields were in a boston marriage, but in
the next generation people got clued in that girls could have some fun
together, no more boston marriage, and women like willa cather didn't have
the same freedom in living with her "roommate" of forty years that sarah
and annie had.

gee, this makes me think of a new term for our approaching
millenuim-thing, "hawaii marriage." hawaii - the marriage/honeymoon
state where girls and girls, boys and boys, or mixed pairs can go to
be legally wed :)

"when bob dole and company rant about the 'cultural elite,' they make the
entertainment industry sound like a bastion of leftwing subversion. but
while many recording and film personalities are armchair liberals, it is
rare for entertainment stars to become dedicated progressive activists.
two exceptions are emily saliers adn amy ray of the indigo girls, who
have been touring, fundraising, and speaking out on behalf of grassroots
native-american environmentalists for the last several years.

"since arriving on the southern alternative and folk scene in athens,
georgia, eleven years ago, the ig have enjoyed a remarkable successful
career.  they have played more that 1,200 shows in the us and around the
world, received 5 grammy nominations, and sold more than 6 million
records in the us alone.  throughout, they have maintained an intense
connection to their audience.  in recent years, the ig etheral lyrics and
rich harmonies have taken a more 'plugged-in' and politicized turn.  they
call it 'acoustic folk rock with angst' and say their images have become
more crisp and assertive.

"since 1991, the ig have increasingly turned their energies toward
political activism.  in 1995, they completed the 21-stop hte tour, which
raised some $250,000 for grassroots na activists and generated thousands
of letters to public officials.  this summer they produced a benefit cd,
titled honor, which includes new tracks by binnie raitt, bruce cockburn,
john trudell, soul asylum, and the ig themselves.  currently they are
recording their 8th album with epic records and are planing another,
larger befefit tour for indigenous environmentalism next summer.

"i caught up with saliers and ray recently in new york city, where they
were playing a benefit dinner for the hte campaing, the joint project of
several indigenous environmental organizations. before warming up for
the show, the ig took off the afternoon to talk.

q: how did you become so involved in na and environmental politics?

amy: we've always been political.  we started out early in our career
with environmental causes, doing a lot of greenpeace benefits.  then, in
1991, we took part in a show in nyc, "ban the dam jam."  it was part of a
wide effort to keep new england state from contracting with hydro-quebec,
which was building the james bay hydroelectric project mostly on native
lands.  i didnt' really know winona laduke [the co-chair of the indigenous
women's network] or other native activists at that time who were working
against james bay.  i talked to her at an earth day event later, adn we
decided to put our resources together.  that's when we got more
involved.  emily and i felt that the indigenous environmental movement
was really important becaause its approach was more down our alley,
because it was very grassroots and winning a lot of battles.  we felt it
was important and effective.  but it's hard to break into it.  when we
first started doing environmental work, we were both interested in
indigenous issues, but in the southeast the information wasn't readily
available.

q: have you started making more connections with indigenous communities in
the southeast now?

emily: we'll be doing more of that on the next hte benefit tour.  last
year we concentrated monstly on the west.  we're recording a new album,
and will probably go out in mid or late summer.  it's going to be a tour
with bigger venues this time so we can raise more money.

a: but we don't want to take it out of the grassroots realm into the
'rock-star' realm.

q: is it contradictory trying to launch a national effort on behalf of
grassroots, local environmentalists?

a: on a national level, we've tried to highlight a small number of
issues--winnable issues, which are easy to explain to the press and the
public.  clinton's salvage rider, which allows more logging on native
old-groth forests, is a good example.  on the other hand, all the money
raised goes into a grant foundation that helps regional and local
environmental organizations.  so we're trying to have a national outlook
in a grassroots way, which is difficult, i guess.

e: but it's something the whole country is struggling with--national
vesus local politics.  i think it's important for people to feel
empowered in their local communities.  of course, there's always the
danger of removing federal protections, especially in conservative
states.  but in my heart, idealistically, i believe the best power comes
from local communities.  this is something native activists can teach the
country as a whole.

q: what do you hope to accomplish with the honor cd you've just released?

a: a few thing.  it's an organizing piece.  it's got information about
how to join the hte campaign, about some of the issues, with statistics
about environmental destruction on indigenous lands.  there are
political-action cards to get public pressure going right now.  people
can send postcards right out of the cd urging prdsident clinton to repeal
the salvage rider.  on another level, there is a lot of music on there
that people haven't been exposed to in our peer group.  along with jane
siberry, bruce cockburn, and toad the wet sprocket, we've got
native-american artists like joy harjo and poetic justice, ulali, and
john trudell.  so it's a cultural exchange.  and then we're trying to
raise money.  all of the money goes into the campaign.

q: it seems like you have always made a real effort to help out new
artists, to bring new folk singers on tour, especially women from the
south. is introducing your audience to native artists a new priority?

e: yeah.  it's the beauty of cultural exchange, the excitement of finding
musicians you weren't aware of and then doing shows together.  so much
of the movement in different native communities is to promote and sustain
the culture, which includes the arts.  so this is one way to help in that
process.  beyond that, it's fun.

a: yeah, it's not real calculated.  i guess it was a point of departure.
it seemed like a good idea to move from just fundraising ot having some
cultural involvement with each other.  in north america, the relationship
between politics and culture is weird.  if you're down in south or
central america, art is a tool of resistance.  neruda, almost any person
you can think of--their art is so political.  people, here are like,
'wow, you're being really political now.'  it's such a big deal.  we
don't say to people that they necessarily have a responsibility to be
political, but it shouldnt' be so unusual.  music is such a good way to
resist.  it keeps you strong, it has dignity.

q: has becoming more politically involved affected your music?

e: i guess i've been writing more politically.  a long time ago, i wrote
some songs that were blatantly political, but not too many.  on the album
we're recording now, i wrote a song that talks about government
repression --the fbi, cia, phone taping, infiltration.  so that's a
definite influence of politics and the hte tour on my writing.  i"ve been
thinkig about what it feel like to have the government in your life all
the time.

a: politics affects everything in your life.  it affects the writing,
your approach to business. you might choose different studios, a
different engineer.  we've always been pretty political in our lives, but
i've become more aware of how to control my money, how to tap into
resources that go along with my values.  we also wrote together for the
first time, the song 'blood quantum' on the honor cd.  it was easy becuse
we were united in the experience.

q: when i listen to your album 1,200 curfews, which includes live
recordings from concerts over the years, it seems like your music has
become harder, more raw, more angst-ridden maybe. why is that?

a: you can look at our music and see that we've become more assertive.
it's also confidence adn better song-writing.  our images are cleaner and
more specific.  and when your images become more specific, they become
more graphic.  they're not diluted.  so they seem more aggressive.

e: it's also who we're being influenced by musically at the time.
sometimes i get tired of playing acoustic guitar.  there's a freedom in
rocking out.  when we did buffy sainte-marie's 'bury my heart at wounded
knee,' i loved playing that song.  that's politics and rock and roll, the
marriage.

a: we also came across artists on these tours who influnced uour writing .
i listen to rage against the machine all the time now. maybe they've
influenced my willingness to be more direct.

q: do you think it's hard to reach people politically when they just come
to be entertained?

e: no, we like to entertain.  we don't have a problem with that.  when
we're doing political work, we advertise it that way.  the hte tour was
advertised very specifically as a benefit; everyone knew where their
money was going.  we also set up table in the venues to people have a
choice.  we don't shove it down people's throats.

a: we keep it pretty separate.  not that our politics aren't part of
everything we do and our organization.  but we have shows that are for
entertainment, even though we have political songs in them.  and then we
have benefits life these.

e: i remember seeing a show by an artist who had become extremely
political when i was really young, and i felt sort of resentful. i just
wanted to hear to songs.

q: so will your regular tour for this new album not have such a strong
political component?

a: well, the money isnt' benefit money on a regular tour.  that's clear.
but we have tables at all our shows--gun control, gay rights.  we won't
only be in the realm of indigenous environmental work.  so we're not
completely away from it.  but people have a choice: go to the table or
not.  the show is the show.

q: how was the hte tour different? on those gigs you have music,
political speakers, a slide show.

e: for us the impact of that tour was so profound that i can't even
articulate it.  i mean, the word 'spiritual' had become a cliche now, but
that's what it felt like.  they were more intensely spiritual shows.
they had a deeper impact.  how the audience felt, we can only judge by
what we saw.  people came backstage, saying they had learned form it,
that they were excited, that they were taking the knowledge into their
lives.  it was more that a show, and that was really gratifying.  but for
me, a show where we just play for fun and everyone has a good time has as
much merit.  it's a balance.

q: you also stopped at pine ridge adn other reservation communities.
what was that like?

e: it was great. the communities were so warm adn welcoming to us.

a: they also fed us.  we went into some pretty poor communities, but they
had feasts for us.  some of those people can't feed themselves soetimes,
so it was really moving to see that kind of giving.  we got more than we
gave.  there's no doubt about that.

q: there has always been a religious or spiritual component ot your
music, with songs like land of canaan, hey jesus and galileo. has
working with native people changed your sense of spirituality?

a: personally, i've always had trouble with christianity.  i've always
been more nature-oriented.  so for me, the prayers we had before tour
events and the spirtual gathering we went to were really nurturing.
everything became a ritual, everything was thanked properly and given the
value it deserved.  so i came home feeling like i was going to miss
having a community to pray with.  there's something really renewing
there.  i mean there's nothing wrong with the ideal of christianity,
judaism, buddhism, and other major religions.  but everything becomes so
institutionalized, and we forget why we're praying.  we forget what we're
thankful for.  on this tour, you prayed for everything.  it was like, 'do
this, make an offering of tobacco; do this, make an offering of
tobacco.'  it was almost abusrd [laughs].  but it becomes second nature.
if you're thankful, you do it.  and making offerings reminds you to be
thankful for all the gifts.

q: have you had to struggle with being portrayed as new agers, being

e: no, that hasn't been a problem

a: i mean, sometimes people in the audience have misread our intentions.
they think we need to go to sweatlodges every night and become indians.
but we and the people we work with have a specific purpose. we're
raising money to give to the indigenous movement. we're not outside
agitators trying to tell them what to do.

e:  for me the experience has been a beautiful bridge to my own beliefs.
my spirituality is less nature-based than amy's.  you know, i struggle
with christianity, but i go to a church service.  and i sense that in
progressive christian churches there's going to be a return to
environmental concerns.  i think people can take the goodness of the
message and philosophy of native spirituality and remember it in their
own traditions.  for all faiths, the earth is our physical place
in teh universe.  it's a sacred gift.  the problem is that through
colonization adn industrialization we've forgotten that.

q: have you been criticized for not making sexual politics a higher priority?

a:  but we have.  i mean it's not the main thing we do, but we've spoken
out a lot.  we sang at the gay-rights march in dc.  we do gay pride in
atlanta.  so it's not our main thrust, but we're living it.  we're out.
and we've never made any bones about it.  when we signed, the record
company knew we were gay.  and if anybody had a problem with it, they
didn't have to be involved.  i also have an independent production
company where most of the employees are gay.  we give money to aids
research.  we're gay, and we live that way.

e: but i have a lot of problems with the gay movement. i don't think
we're all the same just becasue we're gay. i'm not so sure about the
focus on sexuality.

a: for me it's become really important to immerse the gay politics into
the other work we're doing.  because i think we need to take a holistic
approach.  we need to fight against all the things that colonialism
brought to us--patriarchy, manifest destiny, the church and its
intolerance, adn greed.  i've been reading howard zinn's the people's
history of the united states, and it's remeinded me that we're all
fighting the same thing.  we're all disenfranchised--gays, indigenous
peoples.  i also went to the zapatista conference about globalization and
nafta in mexico this summer.  and they were so great down there about
including gay people in the discourse.  that was a big part of what they
talked about, the unity of disenfranchised groups, how more and more
people are being shoved out.  so when i came back i didn't want to forget
about gay rights.  i think it's just as important as anything else.

q: has there been a political give and take with teh native activists
you're working with?

a: yes.  i know i've gotten an education about indigenous issues, adn
i've given one about gay rights.  those issues have been really buried in
a lot of native communities.  but on tour, everyone made a real point to
include gay issues.  they had to, because just about everyone we brought
on tour was gay.  on the navajo reservation, one elder adn activist told
us a story about the spiritual role of gay people in his community.  that
was important to us, adn to all our lesbian friends who were there to
support us.

e: there's a lot of oppression in their communities, just like ours.  a
lot of homophobia.  part of it is that procreation becomes really
important for communities that are down trodden and have such small
populations.  so people are afraid.  people are also fighting so hard
just for sustenance that i would say gay rights is lower on the list of
priorities.

q: how do you think the progressive movement as a whole ought to
incorporate native-american issues?

e: first of all, peole have to find out what's goin on. i think some
peole make the mistake of thinking all indians and all indian issues are
the same. they're not. so there's a lot to learn about the different
communities and their sturggles.

a: i've always thought large organizations should include indigenous
people on their boards and editorial staffs.  i mean environmental
organizations that don't have indigenious people on the boards--that's
ridiculous.  greenpeace is great because they do.  but others don't.
groups with power should seek to have representation from all
disenfranchised groups--gays, indians, women.  then the organizations can
really represent who they're fighting for.

together without having a physical relationship? can't someone put
honey on a gravestone without having had sex?

these movies were love stories and challenge the viewer to look at
them as such without imposing sexual orientations on the players (sort
of like the music of some musicians we know and love --- i forget
their names =)). whether or not the leads were gay is an open
question and entirely irrelevant to the film.

a few of you have emailed me that in the fgt book the leads were
certainly gay and that in the movie version these were played down.
i've never read the book, so i had no idea about this. thanks for the
heads up and (as i told a few of you) i intend to read the book,
probably over christmas.

my comments were about the films, and i do stand by them as far as
the films go.

   the comment was made (regarding thelma and louise) that "of course
thay were lesbians, that was the whole point of the story!!" i still
disagree with this.  it is not the point.  the point is about the
undercurrent of anger among women in a misogyenic society and that
support and hope can be found among each other.  only when power is
obtained this way will society care, and then typically it will show
its concern in the form of a backlash.

i do not see what sexual preference has to do with this.

   the idea that t&l are gay is not an open or shut case either.
these two women cared and loved each other, but straight women (and
men) do this too.  they may be gay, they may not, but we simply don't
have enough information to make that call (i was trying to think of a
better way to phrase this when i wrote it ... didn't find one).  and
there is no need to decide for the movie to make its point -- it
stands on its own.  one of the reasons i liked the film. =)

this is the last mass post i'm gonna send regarding this particular
discussion as i realize it has minimal igc.  but, i do think it's
important to voice my 'cultural (not just ethnic)' minority opinion on
this one because the assumptions in cmb's original post have implications
for _human_ identity issues.  (can you all tell that i'm doing my thesis

oh okay.  is that why thelma is so happy when she 'finally' has an orgasm

why do you insist that they be identified as straight?  for as straight as
anyone would like to think that he or she is, sexuality occurs on a
continuum.  it depends on how the individual, through various social
influences and personal choice, decides to express his or her sexuality.
terms such as "straight", "gay", and "lesbian" (the most widely used)
don't adequately describe sexuality because using them as descriptors
treats sexuality as static.  sexuality is not merely about physicality.
two women do not have to have sex with one another to be lesbians.  in
same vain, 2 women who have sex with one another do not necessarily have
to be lesbians.  it really depends on how an individual defines "lesbian"
that determines what s/he thinks of thelma and louise.  why does it bother
you so much that many lesbians and some straights think of t&l as
lesbians?

oh, okay.  what a crassly heterosexist comment.  heterosexuality is
imposed on everyone.  you just don't know it because you've never really
been challenged because heterosexuality is so socially supported and
encouraged.  it's just the 'right' way to be.  we're told that from
everywhere!  so, heterosexuality isn't imposed on you because that's what
makes sense to you.  why do you think non-heterosexuals have such a hard
time coming out to themselves and to others?

finally, some igc.  i do not think amy and emily are 'challenging' us to
view thier music without an imposition of sexuality on them.  thier
positions as lesbians affect the ways in which they see and understand
their worlds.  yes, being lesbians is not the focus of their music, but
their sexuality does affect the ways in which they think about
relationships.  having to struggle with personal issues such as sexuality
forces an individual to think about themselves and their position in the
world vis-a-vis others.  amy and emily are so incredible because they take
nothing for granted.  they strive to understand minority issues because
they can't not.  they are lesbians and they are women.  and through their
music, they have been able to universalize such human struggle by
communicating that love, respect, and understanding are vital aspects of
social cooperation.

sexuality is not a benign aspect of identity.

there, i hope that made sense.  i wasn't trying to flame chris.  actually,
i just want to promote an understanding that we live in a largely
heterosexist culture.  if you are heterosexual,  you can take it for
granted.  i, nor a bunch of people on this list personally, can't.  so
everytime you think sexuality isn't imposed on you, think again.

why does it matter who was with who and in what movie.  if you think they
were gay, then great.  if you think that they were involved in a really good

she loved him...maybe she loved diana.

in fgt the book, there was definately more implication of a lesbian
relationship, but hey, it is all in what you get out of it. in the movie,
that intimate relationship is not really seen except maybe down by the water
on ruth's birthday.

in t & l, well, this one really is just going to have to be your own
personal opinion.

so can't we just agree that everyone has different view points, but that
doesn't make anyone in the wrong. =)

first, to all those of you who have sent me vhs tapes for "on the road to austin" (which is great, btw sunny), please be patient. i'm not shirking my duties as a branch, but the video lab that i usually do my copying at closed down a while ago due to a crazy lightning storm, and is taking an unusually looooong time to open back up. i do have two vcrs, but their connection is really screwy, so i have to go buy a new cord before i start any projects. sorrysorrysorry. they will get to you eventually, i promise.

hey there guitar playing listees!  i need some advice.  after pondering the
question "what do i want for christmas" for the last couple of weeks and
coming up with no good ideas for my parents i have come up with something!
i want a guitar.  i want to pool chrismas money, add some of my own or
whatever and get a guitar.  please tell me i can still learn to play at 25
years of age! (i can play some chords and mess around but i have no idea what
i am doing really!)  so, i figure yes i am a beginner but still want to invest
in a fairly decent guitar that i will be able to enjoy for a long time.  i
went to the music store today and looked around but what should i be looking
for?  i am looking at a 300.00-400.00 price range.  i looked at a yamaha and
at an ovation--yes, i did look at the ovation just because melissa plays em
:-)  no, seriously, my mom is in the army reserves and can, therefore, order
stuff from the military catalogue and they offer a couple models of ovations
for a pretty good deal. (they have the cc11 for 369.00 including a hard case
etc . . . the music store had the same guitar for 349.00 but no case etc . .

i received this cd boot today from rdr (christmas present to myself. oh
like i needed an excuse ha ha). basically it's "tuesday's children"
cleaned up and put on cd with the songs changed around. i won't swear on a
stack of bibles this is what the people did but it's the same songs (if
not the same recordings). there is also a live acoustic three hits added
on to the end. does anybody know the date (or just year) this version of
three hits was recorded? the other extra song is high horse.

if you've never heard tuesday's children (1981) that is a collection of
covers. pretty amateurish, slow and sappy. :) my vote on this cd is yes
for completists but get a dub if you want to be sure before you spend the
money. i don't regret the money spent, but i am a completist. :) i can
make dubs after the new year (so email me then, not now -- i cant even
handle saving the messages right now). if you want to see the other tracks
just check out the tuesday's children setlist on the lifeblood site --
look under 'lyrics' at http://www.hidwater.com/lifeblood/ig.html

oh laugh there is a secret hidden track -- i just found it cause i left
the cd playing after the last song. it's "problem child" :) if you have
the "red light cafe" boot then you have this recording at the end of the
2nd side.

depends if you like the dead... which i do :) it's a bunch of covers of
grateful dead songs by various groups, some better than others... ig being
one o' the best, of course... and they do uncle john's band, which is just
a great song anytime, anywhere, by anybody

i just received "on the road to austin" and it's really amazing. but
there are a few shows on there that i would love to have the complete
video boot to. so, does anyone have the video boots to either the radio
city music hall show or the knitting factory 94' show? i would be willing

i spent a lot of time looking for "deadicated" before i finally found it
(of course, not nearly as much time as i spent looking for tame
yourself). if you like the dead, and i do, the cd is well worth it. the
ig version of uncle john's band is pretty impressive and the rest of the
songs are a pretty good cross-section of the dead's work.

first off, from the new issue of "time" under "best music of 1996":
#7. ani difranco "dilate"
tart, topical songs from this 25 year old gender bending singer-guitarist,
who blends folk, punk, trip-hop and whatever else strikes her fancy into
insurgent and often arrestingly beautiful music. difranco hitches these
tunes to scathing lyrical and deeply personal takes on romance, and gender
issues, then releases her albums through her own record company.

also, for vic chestnutt fans and fans of film...
vic has a really funny cameo in billy bob thornton's film "sling blade".
it's worth seeing just for him, but it really is a very good movie (if you
can find it; i think it's only in ny/la for now).

hey everyone!
        i've been collecting tidbits of many posts and wanted to respond...i'm
fresh off of seeing melissa in portland.  two words she rocks!  i'm not
even a big fan, but i was impressed!  i was entertained for 3 whole
hours and as far as i'm concerned thats what i paid for...to  see a
show, a performer, an entertainer.
         at the same time i agree with binky (hi) in her opinion of m e.  me is
more "rock-n-roll" and "showy" than ig.(not a bad thing) however i've
come to realize (once again) that among all of the other joy ig give me
they also touch my heart, and, and melissa, well she is facinating but
comes nowhere near my heart.  my opinion and taste nothing against me.
i'd see her again anytime.

sidenote: i swear i heard some folks walking behind me on the way out of
the coliseum talking about ig boots. i was distracted by friends and
couldn't stop them to ask. was anyone there from the list???

and last...band band band!!! i wanna see ig and their gang. could be
because when i have seen them it was just a&e.

i read all the pnw party posts, so sad i couldn't go. maybe next time!

in what a reasonable price would be for any or all three of these, as i have
no idea if this particular fellow is selling them for a bit too high a price.
any info is appreciated. =)  i also got levees today and am willing to copy
it for everyone, but please wait until the new year. =)  the only boots i'll
be sending out this year will be to harry, as i think he's been waiting since
1983 or so... ;) (so sorry...)  i suppose that'll be all for now... i also
have "sarah's greatest hits" available. =)  just a couple of mixes i've made

okay, i don't know if this has been done before, but what about ig covers
done by local college groups that _aren't_ a capella? i have a couple
recordings that are worthwhile, should they be excluded just because they
had the audacity to play with instruments (bwaaaaaa, tears flowing
everywhere)...? tee hee

        for anyone who will be in in atlanta for new year's, i sure hope you check
out the line-up at rainy day.  a bunch of cool bands. one in particular, that
i highly recommend, is lift.  they are an amazing group of musicians; worth
checking out!
        you may have heard of lift before.  if not, you may recognize some of the
members from having played with numerous atlanta musicians.
molly bancroft is a most talented singer/songwriter and she's got a beautiful
voice too.  david patterson on lead guitar is noted for his own solo career
and having been a major player on daemon's "jesus christ superstar... a
resurrection." julie clark on bass and harmonies has played with wendy
bucklew, and is one of the best bassists in town.  finally making up the rest
of the rythym section is simone simonton.. you might remember her from one of
the indigo girls tour or perhaps for her work with kristen hall (among many
others).  if you know her.. you know what an incredibly amazing drummer she
is..  if you don't... cast your eyes and watch her go.. each member of the
band compliments the writings of ms. bancroft with their style and talent..
and a live show is a sound sensation; a sure delight.

        if you are unable to be in atlanta for new year's, keep your eyes open for
their upcoming cd, "lifelike", being released on the daemon records label.  i
hear that amy really likes this band and am also hearing rumors that lift
will possibly be opening for the igs this spring.  keep your eyes and ears
pealed.  i'm sure this is a band you will be hearing more and more of as time
goes by.

        on new year's eve at rdr, i believe that lift will be going on around 4pm or
so.  then be sure to check them out later that night at the red light cafe
(on amsterdam ave.).  they'll prob be going on around 10pm-ish.  (not sure

well, it's that time of year again... time to reflect on the many cds
you've purchased, and separate the wheat from the chaff... here's my best
of list:

3) aimee mann, i'm with stupid. aimee's one of the best pop songwriters
ever. see her in my artist spotlight at

4) shawn colvin, a few small repairs. long-awaited return to recording her
own songs, and well worth the wait. some of her best songs are here.

so sure i am not on the list anymore but i want to share my fab dream with
you all...  all right, i was waiting for an ig dreams forever it seems and
finally i got one!  yay!  i don't know but an ig dream is a confirmation of
my adoration of the girls, you know?  and i finally had one!  :)  so let me
set the scene...a&e were sitting on a couch.  actually it was the couch at
the end of "watershed" when a drops the thing you clip before you take a
shot and e goes, "show them what you just dropped!"  you know that part?
well, they were sitting on that couch and they were singing a song but i
don't really remember what song it was.  i must have been sitting on a
coffee table right in front of the couch because they were so close...  and
a was looking making serious eye contact with me while she
sang...interesting.  i wonder what that meant.  ;)  so maybe i was staring
at her too.  but then she turns around and grabs a few  tortilla chips out
of a bowl that was on a table right behind the couch.  and then she ate
them and smiled.  but she never stopped looking at me or singing!  it was
mighty impressive!   but then something must have come over me because i
just like grabbed a and started kissing her!  woohoo!  it was a good kiss
too!  and then my dream ended.  :(  but hey, that was pretty good for my
first ig dream, don't you think?  i do!  :)  oh well...i just wanted to
share that with everyone.  and i am forever excited because my cool listee
friend, andi, dubbed a few boots for me tonight!  what a champ!  you gotta
love her!  but her vcr seems to have eaten my "uptown"!  what the hell?!  i
am going to make her buy me a new one!  well, at least it didn't my jcs!  i
would die!  then i wouldn't be able to see the hot amy ray in that!
woohoo!  i like that.  did anyone catch that amy ray allusion there?  ;)
she says "i like that." in watershed after emily says something about
braincandy...check it out.  lint girl has crap all over her sweater!  i
will have to pick it off for her!  she made me clean her room afterall!

has anyone noticed that in the least complicated video, they say, "oh i

hey y'all!  i was really psyched to see that ig have a tune on time rice's
collection, but was a little scared when someone said that they thought it
might be , "i don't know how to love him" from jcs..a resurrection.  now
that i know it's "everything's alright" i'm much happier because i think
their rendition of this is amazing and so well suited for their voices.
however, back to "i don't know how to love him"...does anyone object to the
cello part on this as much as i do?  i can't decide which bothers me more,
the instrumentation with the cello often doubling emily (mary's) line or is
it just that the cello player plays it so rhythmically straight while emily
sings it so flowing.  if anyone has the broadway version of this, i'd be
interested in hearing what that instrumentation is like.  so, i'm waiting
for new insights on this, hoping that someone will back me up, and praying
that the cello player isn't someone's brother or long lost cousin from this
list.

shades - $35, r&r - $150, ani sampler - $10. those are what i'd consider
*fair* prices, not necessarily selling prices. i've seen shades go for as
high as $100, r&r for $250. the ani sampler is very new and i don't know
how difficult to come by.

crimble.  if you want to play along it's to the tune of 'god rest you merry
gentlemen' and a pretty fast and frantic am, b7...type of thing... lots of
room for dramatic pauses and i usually manage ot get everyone singing along
to the chorus...the last verse slows down and i blues up the tune a bit...

this whole thing about fgt and t&l sparked my interest enough for me to
actually rent fgt since i haven't seen it in a few years.  my friend that i
rented it with thinks i'm just obsessive (possibly) and thought i was crazy
(also possible), but my take on the whole situation is that ruth really cared
about idgie, but that was it on her end.  i, however, think idgie had a
terrible crush on ruth.  maybe (most likely) they never had anysort of
lesbian encounter with each other, but it seemed to me idgie had a bit deeper
love than ruth thought.  i've never seen t&l, but from what i know, i think
that if they were gay, they weren't meant to be.  i am of the opinion that
women can sometimes form very strong emotional bonds in relationships, but
still not fall in love.  just my take on it . . .

what kim said got me thinking and i think it's very true that striaght people
take it for granted that there is so much straight stuff out there. for the
other 10%, though, one finds themselves digging for something to latch onto.
it's almost like a game, trying to see things in the least possible places.
one of the reasons that i, personaly, find "refuge" in the ig's music is
that i look at them and see two normal people who are fighting for causes i
believe in, are taking stands on issues i care about, who are making
incredible music, and who are just amazingly real people (unlike famous
musicians who distance themselves and create images for themselves that they
aren't truely) who happen to be, by the fickle finger of fate, lesbians. the
fact that they aren't really labeled as such by the mainstream media (well,
at least not until someone with clout hears "it's alright") gives me some
hope that maybe there's a chance for acceptance and normality, or something.

so, if minorities such as women, african-amerians (want to be pc), asian
americans, and the millions of other groups i'm leaving out to save space can
have movies and pretty mainstreamed cultures and role models, why can't gays?
why can a black kid in my class so a report in class about his heritage and
modern culture, but a gay kid in my class can't stand up and say "i'm gay,
this is the history of others like me who have come before, these are my role
models and this is my culture." maybe if real normal mainstream movies were
made about gays who weren't stereotypical we wouldn't even be having this
thread. that's just me, though.

'net. i used http://infobahn.com/pages/anagram.html to come up with
some for 'indigo girls': (there were tons more, but i liked these :) )

whoa nellie!  copying a readily available commercial cd is 1) damaging
to the artist and 2) illegal, technically.  ig appear on several of
\nanci's recordings, including "other voices other rooms".  nanci is
on a "major" label but is stil in many ways an independent artist who
deserves our support.

hey y'all (i'm still practicing my southern accent)

well, the laptop my housemate's sister sent me was absolute junk. it
sucks, they don't even make modems that work with it it's so old. so that
plan has fizzled.

just so y'all know, i have this account till friday, then on sunday or
monday, i'm going to my parents, so i'm going to get on the list from their
account, and i'll be there till the 30th (my b-day!!!) then i don't know
what will happen, but here's the tentative plan

i'm trying to get a cheap and slow (ugh) computer from this guy at a used
computer store.  supposedly later this week, some guy is trading in a
computer which is the minimum that i need, and i might be able to afford
it, if i make enough tips this week.  (the joys of waitressing)  so could
everyone please send me happy computer vibes so this computer works out,
and send me lots of money/tip thoughts  (i'm only like sixty dollars
short).  aaawww, the life of a poor starving artist with lots of loans and
no savings, ack!

and again, thank you all so much for your offers of help and everyone who
tells me they will miss me, it really makes me feel loved, and i appreciate

which of course means that i get the opportunity for a rebuttal *before* you
read his comments.  :)  i was actually trying to think of the cmg songs when
i posted my original comments.  they are pretty mellow, but not as truly sad
as cb and hkf, imo.  i still think there is a level of melancholy in these
new songs that she has never reached before.

and as for those who cite "cut it out" (a very angry song, if you ask me)
and "don't give that girl a gun" as proof that amy is not mellowing, i
should clarify.  i am not saying that amy is on the verge of laying down and
dying.  i simply feel that she has been able to reach a more melancholy
place for her writing that she has not demonstrated previously.  so maybe
mellowing is the wrong word.  i stand firm by the thought that there is a
bit of a new leaf here, and i welcome it.  i think "chiapas bound" and "hey
kind friend" are two great any songs, and i really cannot wait until map is
out officially, and we get to hear their final versions of these wonderful
songs.

well i just got back from the melissa etheridge concert in sf.  and it was
great!!
but then every time i have seen her she has been supendous.  she always gives
her all and doesn't hold anything back.  the concert was simulcast on a local
radio station...if i had known that before i got there i would have taped
it...oh well.  the show was close to 3 hours long.  near the middle of the
concert...she left the main stage and played on a stage near the back of the
concert hall...it was set up behind the sound board...every one left there
seats to be closer to her.  which meant the people in the front row....lost
out on their great view temporarily...and people like me (who were near the
back) got a better view of her!!  i recommend seeing melissa if you get a
chance.  although i think her last show is coming up in l.a. in the next day
or so.  of course melissa does not come close to being as great as the indigo
girls in concert!!!!!!!!!

hi y'all--just had to say hi after being gone for a month. that was the
longest i've ever been off the list and uninformed as far as ig goes.
after a day back on, i feel like i haven't missed too much which is nice.
while home in new york, i discovered several things which i thought
i'd pass along:

1) new york is much better to visit than live--and cheaper!
2) i felt normal calling coke and pepsi "soda" again.  this midwest "pop"
thing was getting old. (thanks m for that survey)
3) i learned that you can meet really awesome people over the net and even
visit them in random places.  margaret, i love you!
4) i learned that you call women 'women' and not 'girls' on an all woman's
college campus (margaret taught me that).  :)  silly me.
5) i figured out that ig is a household name.  everyone i have met since so
came out way back when knows or has at least heard of ig.
6) finally, i have two ig related questions:
  a) did 1200 curfews ever go gold or even platinum?  just curious.
  b) i have been searching for elton john's version of mona lisas and mad
hatters.  i love the girls' version and want to hear the original.  anyone
know what album it's off of or where to get it?  thanks for any assistance.

great to be back in the swing. now time to get a job already :). take care

ok, for all those who skipped the original post, or asked where i got
this from.....i have an anagram program for the mac which is shareware.
i checked www.shareware.com and it doesn't appear to be there, though
they have other versions.  i don't know how well they work and i would
recommend checking for viruses if you try to download one.  jenn posted

i will not be making any tapes of nanci for anyone. her music is
available in various places on the web so if you are interested, you
might want to look there. you can certainly find clips of songs in
some of the "cd stores" that are commercial sellers of all sorts of
things (on the web).

i apologize for any offense taken at this offer. i was merely
trying to share the wealth of a great artist. i do understand that
it is illegal, and it does "hurt the artist" as someone suggested.

i am on several mailing lists, some for almost three years.  i am
aware that there are certain conventions one must follow in order
to be an accepted member.  and i am most aware, due to private
posts that i have received, that i have violated those rules.  for
that i am also sorry.  but i misunderstood something vital in this
list.  you see, it seemed to me that everyone was doing something
illegal by offering "boots."   by dictionary definition, to
"bootleg" is "to produce, distribute, or sell without permission
or illegally."  a "bootleg" is  "a product, especially alcoholic
liquor, that is illicitly produced, distributed, or sold."  in that
sense, every one of you that makes "boots" is doing something
illegal.  now, i understand the purpose of these boots, and i
guess you must be doing them with the artists' consent, because
otherwise you are doing something illegal.  i see the difference,
of course, between that and something commercially available,
but by definition, it is still illegal.  if you have permission,
then technically they are not really "bootlegs."

hey there y'all! a few weeks ago everyone was kind enough to help someone
name her cat. could y'all please help me think of an ig related name for my
parakeet? he's a little blue parakeet with some green in his wings. i don't

hi - my brother and i are soon to be wayward travellers in california and
i was wondering if anyone had some keen suggestions on places an ig fan
should see (good venues for ig-like tunes, or for that matter, good
venues) or things we should be sure to do while there... we'll be in los
angeles and san franciso from around the 27th till the 11th...

everyone's been raving about this woman, so i plunked down twenty-ish
bucks to see her at penn even though i hadn't heard the music...i
couldn't make out any lyrics and was pretty disappointed (though it was
something just to watch her move around onstage).  but since then i've
heard bits from various cds and was impressed.  i guess i am inherently a
lyric person.  so i think i will skip future shows but i am going to buy a
cd or two.  please send recommendations by email.  :)

i've seen him once when he played a little cafeteria at harvard about '89 or
'90. i remember liking him, but i never actually went out in search of his
records. any recommendations?

reminds of the one time i met a very kind security guard at a concert...
most of them are power-hungry sadists who enjoy making fans stand in
freezing weather an hour and a half past the time the doors should have
opened... but anyway at a tmbg concert this one guard standing in front of
me (front row!! me! in the front row! brian doherty waved at me!), after
making sure no other evil representatives of authority were looking,
actually handed a tape recorder back to a guy, after it slipped out of his
coat pocket and fell in front of the railing... i couldn't believe my
eyes... teach me to stereotype people that way :)

so the other day i was reading a post that said dar is coming out
with a new cd in june. so that means dar, ani and ig are
all coming out with new cd's this spring. life is just too perfect
sometimes(well at least in a folk music aspect).

hey y'all! thanks for suggesting names for my birdie. i got sooooo many
suggestions. i knew y'all would come through for me. it was a really tough
decision because i got so many interesting suggestions. i think i'll take
joni's advice and call him indigo because he's blue. he kinda "looks" like
an indigo.

i had a few suggestions for sejarez, one for iguana (not ig-related but cute
anyhow. maybe for the next bird), a few for ray, one for mr e. (which i
thought was cute), and one for fugitive. the most interesting one was
suggested by kirsten who said i should name him "heartbeat" (as in, "my
heartbeat like the rage of wild birds in a cage"). doncha love it?

on the bus to work this morning, i was reading the nauary issue of ice
magazine (more like a newsltter reallt). in their list of relase
dates, i spied:

march 4 indigo girls, get out the map

this is all the info on this release in this issue. this is a pretty
reliable source, though that doesnt mean the date is etched in stone,
but at least we have something to look forward to now.

also in this issue, under the coutnry column ws"

atlanta's country rock outfit the vidalias return with a new album,
stayin' in the doghouse, on feb 11 among the tunes are a cover of
the ramones "questioningly" and a duet with amy ray of indigo girls
("what a nice surprise").

the band is listed as being on upstart records.

ice does have have a web site at http://www.icemagazine.com/ice

my guess is that the mag/newsletter/whatever has the title wrong. afterall,
the shirts on the demo tour simply said "map", and both a&e have said the
title is "map". i'm sticking with "map".

my dear friends,

as i write this note to you, cincinnati has just had its first light
dusting of snow, reminding us that winter is truly upon us, with the low
gray clouds and frigid winds. the wind rattles my windows a little as it
explores my house, but even so, my house is cozy, warm, and dry and i am
settling in by the glowing christmas lights tonight to write these lines.

looking back over the past year, my life continues to be a wonderful,
challenging, unpredictable adventure, which, if you're reading this,
obviously involves you.

in 1996, i travelled around to see the largest portion of the world that
i have seen yet, as i spent time in france, england, all over ohio
(including scenic piqua) georgia, chicago, california, and many places in
between. everywhere i turn, all the beauty just keeps shaking me.

on new year's eve of last year, i was in atlanta, georgia listening to
some of the finest amature music in the country, and visiting with marsha
& perry & jeff down at rainy day records, the neatest off-beat music
store that i know of. in my limited scope, that was the ideal way to
start off 1996, a year full of excitement, change, and surprise.

soon after that, i jetted to england to visit with a good friend and his
family. i saw sights, heard sounds, ate food, drank libations, and
generally spent time with some of the nicest people in that country.
while in england, i went with my hosts to brighton pier, which is a giant
pier that extends far into the english channel. some of my fondest
memories from that trip are from brighton pier, sitting on the smooth
stoney beach with chris and christine, eating (what else?) fish & chips
with the sauce dripping down our hands, talking, and listening to the
surf. that is a great memory for me -- enjoying the environment with two
terrific people half a world away from my home. toward the end of my
visit, i was a participant in chris & christine's beautiful wedding
ceremony, which was a great honor.

on the flights to and from england, the fine employees of the customs
agencies took a great interest in the jean-clad, canvas-coat wearing,
long-haired, bearded freak striding through their chutes -- i was
detained both leaving and entering the country. thankfully, no one
thought a strip-search was necessary, however, my clothing and other
belongings were given a through going-over by the customs chap as i was
attempting to come back to the good old us of a. he was convinced that i
was hiding something; he seemed honestly disappointed to find nothing
more nefarious than a few cans of english hard cider in my luggage.

in april, i went with my parents to california for a visit with my
brother, josh. we visited lots of places while there, from a couple of
'location shots' used by alfred hitchcock for his film the birds in
bodega, to the majestic and scenic jenner and the russian river, to the
golden gate bridge and the ivy room (don't ask). and, while we were in
california, we celebrated the marriage of my brother and allison, and
welcomed allison and her beautiful daughters whitney & brianna into our
family. for those of you who can appreciate the astronomical unlikelehood
of this statement, josh tied the knot! it still gives me the shivers to
think of my brother being a (gasp) married man!

other big news from the vogel front... in june, i purchased a house in
northern kentucky. from my home office, i can -almost- see the beautiful
cincinnati skyline. i'm one block south of the great view, but that's
close enough for me -- i can walk over to the view if i need to. the home
i bought is a two story brick with 3 bedrooms, 1 and 1/2 bath, three
stained glass windows, porch, deck, rookwood fireplace, complete basement
and (somewhat) finished attic. a lot of the 'fundemental' repair work has
been done, so i am concentrating on the 'fun' stuff -- decorating and
putting the finishing touches on the house. please stop by and see me and
stanley the wonder dog (tm). we'd love to show you our place!

i am still happily working at the university of cincinnati office of
undergraduate admissions. i finished another 'recruitment season' in
early december. for the uninitiated, a 'recruitment season' is when
intrepid admissions officers ("aos") travel all over, taking the good
news about our institutions out to high school students. this year, as in
previous years, i spent about 10 weeks out on the road with my
colleagues. one of the highlights of life on the road is the time spent
with admissions personnel from other colleges and universities. there is
a large group of aos with whom i travel, and we are a family on the road.
those fine folks make life on the road bearable, even (dare i say it?)
desirable. their company and friendship mean the world to me, and the
wonderful meals we eat while out make sure that i'm forever on a diet!

as i close this letter, dear friends, i am mindful of the meaning of this
holiday season, and in that spirit, i consider all of you to whom this
letter will travel, and the profound impact you have had (and continue to
have) on my life. to say i am grateful for all of you does not begin to
describe my feelings.

sitting here, listening to the wonderful, meloncholy strains of over the
rhine's christmas recording, the darkest night of the year, i thank god
for giving me such a wonderful group of people that i am proud to call my
friends.

actually, i doubt mr. shit-for-brains even reads the list, and so flaming
him on the list wouldn't accomplish anything. he's just a bored little
boy who happened across our address and thought he'd rile us up. (notice

okay, first of all the direct ig content so those of you with happy delete

ever since obtaining a copy of tuesday's children--the b band i have wondered
if 'rock me on the water' was a cover or an original.  well, yesterday i was
driving along and i heard jackson browne singing in on my radio so that pretty
much indicates that the ig version is a cover.  the question is who wrote
this/sang it originally?  i love this song and it is, perhaps my favorite song
on the album.  is this on the cleaned-up 'levees that break my heart?'  i have
ordered this and am anxiously awaiting it :-)

for those of you who responded to my boot offer and have sent tapes to
farmington hills, one of three things has happened. either you sent me a
tape and i sent you one back.  which is what is supposed to happen.  you
sent me a tape and are still waiting and getting kind of annoyed.  which
is fine. i'm not doing any other trades until i get this done but i have
a good reason for taking forever.  i went to detroit.  everything was
fine and i came back to california.  now, i'm moving back and trying to
do one tape at a time.  also, some people who sent boots. did not send a
note. i tried to save all the addresses with the tapes but there are a
few which don't have any. i will let y'all know who.  i just want to
apologize for taking so long with this but let me assure you it will take
longer. i'm sorry guys, but this offer has become very low on my list of
priorities since i'm driving to detroit jan. 10.  you will all get them
though.  or thirdly if your tape arrived in michigan after i left there,
it marked return to sender and sent back because, who know if and when i
would get it in the holiday season and moving.  just wanted to update
everyone.

i thought i'd just let y'all (i love saying that!  no one here says it, but i
love it!) know about my indigo day.  since today was the last day of school
'till next year (woo!) we had parties in almost every class today (don't you
miss high school? =) ).  i brought my guitar, and was just sort of fooling
around in the classes with different chirstmas carols and some stuff from the
internet.  anyhow, in bio i led a group sing a long to "shame on you" and
"jonas."  (this girl in my bio class doesn't believe me they're lesbians, and
so after the line "and when the beautiful ladies walk right by . . ." i
turned to her and was just like "they're gay!  okay?"  ohh, i guess you had
to be there! . . )  then, in history, the girl infront of me requested
galileo, and it turned into half the class singing "how long 'til my soul
gets it right?!?!?!" real loud.  when that was over, this kid turned to me
and was like "do you know any other indigo girls?"  i was like "honey, you
name it i'll play it."  of course she picked watershed which i can't play too
well . . . and my friend got me swap ophelia (i'mtorndown) for x-mas . . . =)

i know you all very well travelling on this amazing vessel we have created
together. i love you all dearly and am amazed everyday when i go into my

i was surfin' the net the other day and found out that the *map* release
date was pushed back form march 4th to march 18th (the day after my
b-day!!). i don't remember which web site it was though... anyways, i think

well, i haven't posted in a bout four months though i've been on this list for
close to a year. so, does that make me a newbie?? cuz, the way i see it, i've
never been flamed nor does anyone know me...movin' on, movin' on...

well, with all this talk about the new album and all, i was pondering...
so far our dearest emily has written and preformed two beautiful piano peices
called winthrop and leeds which she sings all by her lonesome. let me just
say that i love them both dearly...

still, the way i see it, i don't really think the girls are gonna put both
songs on the new album as is. i mean, in the past, there has only been one
solo song per album (alright, except for self-titled, but one was amy's and one
was em's) and i don't see them changing this pattern just to put two em solos.
so, it seems that they've gotta do something. here are my proposals/questions:

-should they just kick one out completely?? and, if so, which one?

-should they rework one/both into duets with amy? and, if so, which (if not
both)?

-should they kick em both out? <sniff>

-should they say "screw it" and keep em both??

-should em release her own solo piano called "piano works about towns"??

no no no no no! (geez, i hope not.) i really don't think they'd leave one
out cuz emily seems to turn out too few songs as it is. i mean, they're
always saying how amy is way more productive than emily.

my official guess is that they re-work one as a duet, and the other
remains a solo. i say leeds remains a solo, and winthrop's gonna get some
major re-arranging. it's amazing how much their songs change from the
pre-album versions. i'll bet we're gonna be _real_ pleasantly surprised.
ok, that's my guess. maybe we should start a pool for this too. :)

actually, iguana _is_ ig related (in a round-about, obscure kinda way.)
how many degrees of separation do you think there are between an iguana,
and ig? i'll tell you. there are _two_ degrees of separation:a member of the
ig-related-band, viva la diva (i think it's jan, who's actually an
ex-member, but still...) owns two iguanas. their names are ethel, and
merman. sometimes one of the iguanas plays with the band. :)

i just wanted to share my own silly randomness:

i went with my class to see a charles dickens christmas "show" at the mount hope
estate and winery here in pa, and it was great. but the point is, on the way
out, i saw a huge sign on one of the buildings that said "fare thhe well" and i
just had to sing. everyone was so amused... i was ecstatic.

and even more random:
i am "writing a novel" (which will never be done if i continue to re-start it
every time i get up to 40 pages), and the character loosely based on me is named
louise rayler. so a few of my friends call me "ray", which delights me
endlessly. when they address me as such, i just grin and they laugh.

yeah, i'm relatively new on the list, but i know the issue has been floated
a couple of times. but instead of a big book like deadbase, we should make
it a web site. perhaps a good name would be "indicator", or for the
geographical reference, "indicatur" :-)

yes, leeds can go away.  ok ok, too harsh.  but i really really prefer to
hear indigo girl*s* songs and not one girl or the other.  i like ig because
of what they sound like together.  mho of course, but i hope they don't put
like 3 or 4 solo songs on map and start a solo trend.  one each is more
than enough.  of course if they re-worked all of them into duets that would
be jolly as well.  and besides those solo songs are incredibly sad and
depressing.
        also, if someone goes back to one of our millions of "least
favorite song" surveys (uhhh sherlyn?) i seem to recall a solo song in
everyone's list.  so obviously they aren't all universally liked by the
important people--us.  but of course i am a huge fan of amy's solo stuff
from that ep cd, so go figure.

bottom line--please let them limit the amount of solo songs and if one must
be left off, ba-bye leeds--way too depressing. i'm off to frolic in the
balmy 8 degrees here in chicago--brrrrr! i hate cold! wrong city to live
in for that.

well... i am soooooo sorry!! apparently
my husband mailed the tape for my boot w/o
postage on the inside envelope!!! i just found this out today when doobie
was kind
enough to send back a boot she taped for me and sent a note telling me i
forgot the
return postage. of course, my husband says, "oh yeah, i think i forgot to
stamp those
envelopes inside." ugh!!! i am so pissed at him! you know how men can
be.... downright
stupid, at times!  anyway, i do apologize and would like to know if you
want me to mail
another envelope that is stamped or if i can send you some money to stamp
the one you
have?  whatever you want just let me know. i really am anxious to get the
tape.  again,
i am sorry for the mix up. i was wondering why i haven't received the
tape yet....now i
know. just let me know what you want to do. sorry again!

hi everybody!
if someone came and put a homophobic letter in my snail mail, where i
live, where i feel safe and accepted...i, personally, would not ignore
it.  i would do something, nice!  like donate $5.00 or $10.00 or
whatever to my local gay and lesbian organization in that (meanie)
person's "name".  i do realize we all have our own ways of dealing, or
not, with  people or things in the world.  thought i'd share mine.
