subject:      release dates, tours

as of a month or so ago, the ig were planning on touring in new england
during april.  so, it seems like the album would be out at least around
that time.  i know they released so after a month of tours or so, but i
think they said those wours were so that they could learn the songs or
something like that, which they seem to have already done quite well this
time.  :)  oh, since you'll probably ask, the reason i know about the
tour dates is because my school is trying to get them (but i doubt it
will happen).

this definitely calls for celebration....since we don't know where to
address the flood of emails, everyone's just gonna have to get out 1200
curfews and play--you guessed it--back together again.  yeah sundara!
yeah list!  yeah indigo girls!

on a different note, an acquaintance of mine is in rotc and planning on
the navy as a career, and i am getting tired of keeping my mouth shut
since i don't like to criticize people's personal choices in life but i am
so anti-military.  (i can't decide at this point whether i am more upset
at them existing to kill people or at them supporting "don't ask don't
tell.")  anyway i've mentioned ig a bunch and since she was asking what they
sing, i asked if she had a blank tape and dubbed her part of newport,
including "it's alright," on one side and then whatever six ig songs came up
on the random setting on my cd player on the other.  keep your fingers
crossed....i haven't done this kind of enlightenment mission since high
school (mainly anti-israel and "don't you have a christmas tree" stuff)
and i'll need all the support i can get.

thanks y'all,

hey y'all,

i saw a post in the newsgroup friday: someone said that a & e called 99x and said the release has been pushed back until april 8th. 99x is an alternative rock station in atlanta. amy called 99x a few weeks ago and, at that time, said the release would be in march.

oh, well. file this in the for what it's worth department. i'm with whomever it was who said they wait until they see a cd in the stores, then they know it's been released! y'all will make yourselves crazy trying to chart cd release dates. ;)

peace and lots of packing,

great.  and the video is great too, i can't wait for all of you to get
it.  i have tapes from:

camille, pj, rose, andi, donna and kendra

so these listers should be getting their tapes very soon.  i am working
on them, and hope to have them all out by friday.  if you don't see your
name above, and you sent me a tape, read on.

i was thinking that there is the possibility that some people might have
sent me tapes in tucson that i did not get by the time that i left for
phoenix.  i won't be back in tucson until jan. 13, so, if this is the
case, please write to me, and we can work something out.

well, cancers, have peaceful holidays and email me if there is anything
you need.

love, kristen

p.s.  if there are any address changes for your packages, let me know
this week, okay?

well, your message was really funny...especially about the emily solo
album about towns.  anyway, i've been wondering about this too for a long
time.  are the girls going to put out an album with possibly 3 solos?
(that's including amy's chiapas bound)  i, for one, hope not.  not because
i don't like their solos, but i like their duets so much better.  maybe
they'll do either winthrop or leeds as a duet.  i like leeds a lot as a
solo, so i think it would be cool to hear amy sing on winthrop, and maybe
even play guitar, though that might be a little jarring.  well, actuallu,
maybe not that bad.  just thought i'd share my thoughts.

flicks, wes craven, makes a great horror flick that mocks horror flicks.
he even makes fun of his own movies (drew barrymore says, "the first

checking out if you saw all of those movies, or if you didn't see all of
those movies because you were too good for them....:)

for the three-ish months i have been on the list, i have been hearing
about all these other artists similar or related in some way to the girls
and have been sososo anxious to hear them :) well--thanks to an immensely
cool friend of a friend, i finally got to! catie curtis, kristen hall,
dar williams, disappear fear, cheryl wheeler, and, of course, ani :) my
friend got a tape from her friend that had a bunch of people all y'all
talk about on it. i cannot tell you how excited i was when i heard it,
especially about ani--i had just never gotten my butt over to blockbuster
to listen to any cds myself. i was (duh!) impressed. mmmm.... anyway, i
just wanted to say thanks for all the nigc ;) w/o it those would have
just been a random group of artists, but as it was it was very cool for
me to get to hear them all at one time.

happy her finals are almost over, but sad to miss 3 weeks worth of cool
conversation because of her silly disk quota,

ps i can't remember many of the _names_ of the songs on the tape, so

>from the chickensoprano at home:

hello, all you ig-listees!  i'm here at home for christmas, and my dad
finally got his juno account set up, so i thought i'd drop y'all a quick
message.

first, last week my dad, my sister, a friend of her's, and i went down to
columbus (a couple of hours away from my home) to do some christmas
shopping with my grandparents.  for the trip, dad said that we could each
bring one tape to listen to in the car so that no body would be fighting
over the music.  this is good, because my sister, although she is younger
than me, usually wins out.  so, i brought 4.5, since it has such a nice
variety of indigo.  so we're listening to joking and all of a sudden my
sister starts complaining about something, so i asked her what was the
matter.  she says that i have played the indigo girls so much that she
starts singing along without thinking about it.  cool.  i told her it was
much better than stone temple pilots (her current favorite), and she just
gave me a dirty look.  well, it's a start.

second, i was wondering something about hand me downs.  i've been
listening to the las cruces boot from last august that carrie was so kind
to make a copy of for me (hi, carrie! :)  and i noticed the one part
where they're both singing two different lines at the same time.  i think
amy is the one with the regular verse and emily is the one singing the
repetitive part, but it's so hard to tell because emily is singing so low
she sounds like amy.  does anyone know who sings what?  i'm reminded of a
post that was made last year when someone wrote that their voices are so
similar that it sounds like one person at times.

well, that's all for now.  i miss you guys.  oh, if anyone has a good
answer to the above question to hmd, please reply to
creechal@aslan.emu.edu 'cause i'm sure my dad wouldn't care to know....
;)

anna

(sorry, my sig files are at school, and i can't think of anything cool
right now)

well, i have to agree with jenn.  i too have been majorally influenced by the

(just so you people don't think i'm horribly selfish, i bought most of these
cd's with an early christams gift certificate from my brother's girlfriend!
:-)  so thanks to all!!

anyway, i just read this article and for the ani fans out there, i thought
you might enjoy the following:

"...a quick survey of the rock-music scene makes clear women will continue to
be heard in the new year.  artists such as amos, liz phair, jewel, fiona
apple, ani difranco, and joan osborne inspire devotion in fans drawn to their
postmodern-feminist sensibility."

well, personally, i'd like to add em and amy to the list, but, oh, well.  i'm
curious to hear any opinions on the fiona cd.  i bought it recently and
haven't quite formed an opinion.  what do you guys think?

sorry, for the lack of ig content, but mail is slow on the list today
anyhow...

subject:      uk fans olny - bob harris sohws on radio two

to all uk indigo followers,

just wanted to inform all uk indigo fans that bob harris (former radio
one dj, currently with glr) is presenting a series of late night music
shows on radio for two weeks over christmas (check radio times for
details or web site <http://www.bbc.co.uk/bobharris/>

those who know bob will be aware that his tastes cover a wide range of
music, mainly songwriter orientated. encompassing the likes of shawn
colvin, marc cohn, dar williams, mary chapin carpenter, michelle
shocked, the indigo girls and loads of others of that type both old and
new. he's also accepting dedications and input on music to play in the
shows from listeners.

so if you can spare some time. please listen in. if enough people enjoy
it and show it then he may be asked to do something more permanent. and
this would mean a source of airplay for all those artists that we
appreciate, but don't get any attension from radio. here's a chance to
change that if we all stand up and be counted.

if you like what you hear, write and tell radio two at this address,

bbc radio two
room 307
weston house
london
w1a 4ww

bobs one of the nicest guys in broadcasting and supports and loves the
music we all love. he and the music he plays deserves airspace!!!!!

cheers,
nic treadwell (atic@ack.powernet.co.uk)

no i don't work for radio two!!!

from "the mountain" web site (seattle radio station) new release page:

       indigo girls (march 4)
get out the map. amy and emily test-drove some of their new
songs at bumbershoot '96;
expect a much more guitar-based and electric sound this time
around, although acoustic
instruments like banjo, mandolin, etc., will also be used.
guests include steve earle and
violinist lisa germano. a tour's supposed to begin in late march.

isn't it interesting that this tiny bit of (questionable) data is present
here, but the sony website for ig says nothing!!!!!

hey y'all,
slow day, slow week, no wonder i guess.
anyway i got the issue of ms. that has ani in it, and it's a pretty
depressing article, but there's also something else.  there's this one about
what different feminists rent from the video store, and one of them is dar.
she says:

lily tomlin's 'the search for signs of intelligent life in the universe'
[1991] is so inspiring!  as women, we're treated as ornaments or as natural
resources, and how much we're valued is based on how anorexic we are, or how
much we conform.  so it's liberating to see this gifted actress show the
interior lives of all these very different, special women.  jane wagner's
writing is brilliant, and i love the view we're treated to of feminists in
the early 1970s, listening to helen reddy and doing their roe v. wade
mailings.  after all, they're the reason films have improved as much as they
have.  thanks to feminism, even mainstream movies are not as offensive to
women as they used to be, and not as homophobic.
i rent 'defending your life' [albert brooks's 1991 comedy about the
afterlife] and show it to all of my friends because of its message: fear is
the only thing that really holds us back, and once you confront that, you
can grow.

that's kinda funny to me because last night we watched another brooks film,
'lost in america'.  it was soooooooooooooo bad, it was unbelievable.  i
could not believe that anyone would give him money to do such a piece of
trash, nor ever again give him money to make another one.  if you haven't
seen this, don't waste your time.  it was supposed to be a comedy, but
averaged about one laugh per half hour, and it was the stupidest thing i've
seen in a long while.  of course the answer to this diatribe is, "so karey,
did you like it?"  hehheh.

for anybody curious, my sister's bat mitzvah yesterday was great.  she did a
spectacular job.

love and merry xmas,
karey
(usually known as karey weisman eals <karey@u.washington.edu>)
(geez, what am i gonna do if i stay here all summer?!  anybody know if at&t
lets you make sig files?)

we were in a music store and while i wasn't looking, one of my friends

was extremely surprised and it made me happy because they wanted to cheer me

on another note.....
i am slowly converting my friends to ig and dar.  i saw one of my friend's

all of which is irrelevant.  here's the igc...there's this song by john

a lot like "it's alright" to me.  it's called "just another day," and even
has the words "it's alright" in the song.  i'm comparing the band-ish las

hallo, all!
well, as i made my fun fun fun holiday shopping rounds, i of course had to
stop in at my local music store. you see, i was _really_ looking for abba
for my mom (no joke--my mom loves abba)...but of course i had to check the
store's selection of ig, you know, just in case map had been released in
the last couple days without my knowing it. :) no map, but i did see an
imported single of least complicated that also had mystery and...some
other song on it (fare thee well? dead man's hill? i know it was a three
word title amy song but can't remember now) for $8. is this something i
should get? i'm not exactly a completist, but if i decide not to get it i
could pick it up for someone else, too....any info on this would be
appreciated.

on a completely random tangent, i played ig for a friend of mine in her
car and by the end of the ride she wanted to know who it was, what songs,
etc. etc. etc. :) tee hee hee. a fan is born!

tangent #3 (#2 deleted because it was subjectically challenged): could
someone send me the url for the site with the newport (?) pictures on it?
i wanna look at the pretty pictures, too!

woah, enough for me. i've posted how many times now...geez louise, i've

hello everyone!

some ig-related thoughts this christmas eve ...

i actually happen to love leeds, so i hope it is on the new album. :) the
lyrics are amazing. i agree with the other folks who said that winthrop
would probably be reworked into a duet, so as not to have too many solos on
one album. at the time of the demo tour, even "cara mia" and "remember
everything i told you" were basically solos, so things will probably change
quite a bit.

also, and i know this is quite an old thread, but it occured to me today
that my vote for most adorable emily laugh would be either from newport '96
just before they sing "it's all right" and she says, "here's a new song --
it's *happy* ... well, sort of ... we'll see." or from the world cafe boot,
right after they finish singing "get out the map" and amy says she played
the wrong mandolin chords at some points.

okay, that's it. happy holidays to everyone!

i know! i know! pick me! pick me!  it's pronounce squim (like squirm
without the "r" - a very amusing way to remember it).  i'm a lowlife
californian, but i know it cuz i took the deposition of marine

subject:      themes and best wishes

first off, before i forget, best wishes, and happy holidays to everyone
out there. 'tis the time of year to give your cats an extra kiss. :)

now, i was sittin' around the other day and i started thinking about map,
and i know this is _really_ obvious, but it occurred to me that there's a
really heavy travelling theme about the album. winthrop, leeds, and
chiapas are all place names, and then of course there's get out the map.
so if there's one thing that you could say was on their minds for this
album it's travelling...hence the name of the album. so here's the "new
thread" part of the post: what would you say are the "themes" of the
other albums. just to get the ball rolling, i'm gonna say what i've
always thought about so. i've always thought that so was sort of an
expression of their difficulty in dealing with too much fame. reunion and
fugitive both deal (at least in part) with amy's anger/fear toward people
who idolize her. and of course language or the kiss is all about emily
being away from loved ones. so i say so is the "problems with fame"
album. (which is actually kinda funny if you think of the segment in
watershed where they're talking about how most artists spend their
_second_ album griping about fame.) ok, so i'm opening the floor for other
suggestions on album themes.

and here's my latest "i converted a friend" story. i brought some cd's
into work. they all know what an ig freak i am, and they've been
remarkably patient listening to my ramblings. one of my coworkers took
special notice of world falls on 1200c. i thought it was sort of the
perfect ig song for her to pick out, so i gave her a little lesson on the
song, and i revealed "the secret" of world falls to her. you know, the
twinkle twinkle little star thing.

finally: in 4 days i'll be headin' to atlanta for rdr's new year's bash.
i'm just about beside myself with anticipation. for those of you who will
be there, maybe i'll see ya there. :)  for those of you who aren't
going...well, i guess i'll be telling you all about it when i get back!

hugh wins.  what he wins, i don't know.  but my family still isn't home,
so sundara broke out the wine and is emailing up a storm.  heh heh heh.
yeah, us native sequim people are pretty annoyed by everyone who can't
pronounce sequim. everyone says see-qwim.  it's native american.  one of
the local tribes.  there is also a  river near here that is named the
hamma hamma. which means smelly smelly.  hee.  it's my favorite native
american name.  it's fun to say. alright.  this is really my last post of
the night.  and i may even hold off and not check email tomorrow. spend
some quality time with the family.  so if anyone else checks their email
before the 26th, have a wonderful christmas (if ya celebrate it)  if not,
have a great day anyway.

merry christmas to all!!!

today my friend dropped off my christmas gift. for the last month i have
heard about this amazing gift, so i was eager to finally see what all the
hype was about. when i opened it i practically jumped backwards. the hair was
totally off, not even close. the face was on the mark for amy, but the nose
on emily was too big. but, it was the overalls that gave it away. it turned
out that my friend had worked for about 2 months in her art and woods class
making me, yes, amy and emily action figures. they are mostly made out of
wood with moveable arms and legs.

they are just so funny to stare at. i have a she-ra castle from when i was 8,
so they have a new home. she wants to put them in our radio station booth
until we graduate, but i'm not sure i wanna part with them yet.

hopefully she'll make me a sara lee doll for easter!!!!!  : )

smiles : )

um . . .

yeah, ok, so is probably "the trouble with fame" album.  then, though, one is
tempted to say "what the he . . . ck does 'least complicated' have to do with
anything?" but, then again, one is also tempted, on occassion, to dress up as
a clown or eat my father's pancakes.  well, we start at the beginning (or, at
least, the earliest thing i own) which is the self titled ablum.  (that was
lacking but a drum roll)  the "getting over the hump in an attempt to reach
perfection" album?  too wordy.  well, we'll skip to nomads . . . the "dark
depressing album" maybe.  no, no, no . . . the "light at the end of the
tunnel" album?  maybe . . . it would be a good follow up to the getting over
the hump one, 'cause here they are saying just keep plugging and things'll
get better!  (i'm too tired to think straight . . . i'll read this tomorrow
and say "what?")  . . . alright, rites.  umm . . . the "now that we have more
money we're going to experiment with a wider range of instraments" album?
quite possibly.

the good news is we have to sign off because we are being transferred to georgia. :) we should be in our new place and back online by this weekend! it will be nice to have something familiar in our new home since we will be strangers in a strange land. thanks to all on the list for being so nice and welcoming. it's good to have a laid back rest stop like the ig list of the information superhighway. later.

peace,

this is a message to let you know that there is now an electronic mailing
list dedicated to singer/songwriter catie curtis. you're receiving this
notification because, at some point, you've given your email address when
signing up on a mailing list after seeing catie in concert, or through
ordering merchandise from her fan club.

catielist will provide a forum in which catie's fans can discuss her
music, post reviews of shows, talk about related artists' music, ask
questions, and get tour and recording information as it becomes available.
it is an unmoderated list, which means that whatever users post will be
forwarded onto the list without being reviewed for propiety; because of
that, i ask that people think carefully before posting.

there are only kinds of postings that i consider to be absolutely
off-limit: 1)posts about catie's private life - because it's just that,
and not a topic for strangers to discuss and 2) junk mail - chain letters,
petitions, internet urban legends (neiman marcus cookie story, craig
shirgold, good times virus) are the kinds of things i'm talking about.

you will not be automatically subscribed to the list - this is only a
notification of its existence. if you would like to subscribe, do the
following:

send a message to majordomo@cgrg.ohio-state.edu with the following
in the body of the message:

    subscribe catielist

there is currently no digest option, although that is being worked on.

hope to see you there!

this is an urban legend.  just like the good times virus, just like the
cookie recipe.  if you haven't heard of these before (i mean everyone)
just look for urban legend on the web.  there are many pages about them
and this is one of the main ones.

x-cc:         creechal@aslan.emu.edu

hi, y'all!  typing to you from chilly northwest ohio where i'm home on
break.  i was going through my desk drawer full of old letters and such
when i came across some printouts of posts made last year that i thought
were so good i just had to save them.  i got to thinking that maybe i
could share them with y'all since so many of you (at least it seems like
it) weren't around back then. so, i'm starting with my personal favorite.
:)

anna

p.s. in order to keep from being accused of misquoting, all typos have
been left as is.  sorry folks! ;)

since there has been a lot of interest in who is and who isn't, i thought
i would share this secret code so folks can tell if the singer they are
listening to is a lesbian or not.  normally we don't divulge our secret
signals, but in the interest of world peace i will share this little
tidbit with you...

fire

yep that's right...fire...any song that has a reference to fire in it
means that the singer is a big ol' lesbian......it's true. so now the
secret is out...johnny cash is (of course) a lesbian. as is bruce
springsteen and elvis.

but then everyone already knew that...didn't they?

divulge some of our subversive activities.  (sinicker, sinicker) our
super-duper secret handshake---------  the high five.  i know, it's hard
to believe.  and it's caught on so well that it has even been emulated by
a handful of straight people.  but just remember that the next time you
go to a sports bar.  or a bowling alley.  you see ten men and women out
having a good time.  the first man gets a strike.  he high fives his
girlfriend.  that's it!! lesbians!!!!  the whole lot of 'em!  next time:
the secret wink!!!  :) sorry.  i'm suffering from a serious monty python
drought....

well it looks like gia let the cat out of the bag so i might as well let
you know that everyone is a lesbian.  thats right...even you (especially
you !)

we have been trying to keep it a secret because...well......frankly,
there's just not enough room in the clubhouse where we have our secret
meetings....and....you know....there wouldn't be enough tasty snacks to
go around. (and everyone knows that we lesbianse serve the best  tasty
snacks at our secret meetings.)

elvis was the biggest lesbian but gertrude was the best

pondering my boredom, and several other listees boredom, i decided to
attempt to start a thread,

i don't know if i'm the only one,  but i have zillions, literally, of
padded envelopes, most of which will fit about 2 blank tapes in them.
and i reuse them, but usually it's for a trade, so i get another envelope
right back, or it's for a tape in a sase, and i still get it back.  so
does anyone have any ideas about what a person can do with 8000 padded

are they the bubble kind?  if so, line 'em all up, walk on 'em, & listen
to 'em pop.  or have a contest to see who can pop all the bubbles on one
envelope the most quickly.

or take up needlepoint, make a lovely pillow case, & use 'em as stuffing.
this would also work for non-bubble type padded envelopes.  ditto for
using them as quilt padding - have a sewing bee, make a charming li'l
patchwork quilt, & stuff 'em in.  or even quicker, just sew 'em all
together, using the envelopes themselves as the patchwork pieces.  that
way you can be covered (literally) with fond memories of your favorite
tape exchanges for years to come.

yeah! and then when you're a little old lady & the social workers comes
to help move you to a nursing home (no ageism intended, ok, it's a joke,
ok?), anyway, then you'll show up as the human interest story on the 6
o'clock news as the little old lady who hoarded padded envelopes - you
know, where there's only a foot-wide pathway through the stacks of
padded envelopes which by that time have taken over all the rooms of your
house.  and then they have to call in the specialists to do a story on
why some people turn into packrats, & how to tell if you're becoming a
packrat yourself, & so on.  and of course in your will, you'll leave your
entire bootleg collection to your cats, & there'll be another human
interest story on that later on down the road.

*way* too bored, or just rummy from playing in this fun fun snow????!!!

heehoo!  y'all are too funny.  i love all the ideas.  so after i posted
that, my mom made me get off email, and i was trying to think of indigo-y
things to do with padded envelopes,  i thought maybe i could cut them up
and make little padded jackets for all my bootlegs,  so when we go on
roadtrips, they can be bounced around in the car and be ok. although,
yoko the subaru still doesn't have a working tape player, so i guess
that's not a valid reason, but ,  if there is that ever-looming great pnw
earthquake we are supposed to have, the boots might stand a better chance
of surviving.  hee.  i think i've had too much buttered rum.  and i
didn't even play in the snow :)  cause we only have an inch here in
sequim.

also, just so ya know,  the reason i have so many is due to mapped,
people sent me a sase in a padded envelope. i don't know why. it's way
easier to send a blank in a padded envelope, along with a couple stamps
and mailing labels in the package, then you only use one envelope.  or
maybe the things are breeding in the corner, i should separate the boys
from the girls.  hah.  now i'm giving the things sexes.  i wonder if any
are lesbian padded envelopes??

peace, love, and more love,

my my, this certainly is a *fertile* thread isn't it!! (heeheehee, or
groan if you don't like bad puns).  the list was ripe for a thread like
this, thanks, sundara!  and yes, about 10%, or 800, of those envelopes
are undoubtably lesbian.  or i guess that would be 400 lesbian envelopes
and 400 gay male envelopes.  don't know how many bisexual envelopes,
although i do know that all envelopes fall somewhere on the continuum,
whether they admit it or not.

hee hee hee, still giggling, must be the snow... neener neener, we have a

500 pep's (padded envelope points)...10 free maxell tapes
1000 pep's ... 5 high quality video tapes
2000 pep's ... $100 in discount certificates for postage at the post

that is only 4358 padded envelopes right there.  so you have enough to
make a padded blow-up audrey doll too.  she who comes up with the best
quote for me gets to keep the doll first, but since there's not enough of
me and em and amy i think the rest of the envelopes should be used to
mail us from one listee to another.  kind of how the nursery school
rabbit gets taken care of during the summer.

audrey is not bored, just hasn't figured out how to make the fingers stop
typing so she can go to sleep.  (andi, are you there?  i told you about

snowed in. (okay, so 5 inches of snow woudn't constitute snowed in
anywhere else...but hey, this is the pnw, land of balmy temps and no

maybe we could take all of sundara the padded envelope goddess's and make
a big sleigh? and then we could make motorized horse-things to pull the
sleigh...and then have everyone in the pnw come gather at sundara's house
and don themselves with warming padded envelope overalls and we'll go

subject:      buying used ig cds= a bad thing?

this was originally posted on the newsgroup:

i've got a silly question.  but i'm not sure how these things work . . .

does buying their cds used "hurt" them?  i would seem to think so because
you're piggy-backing on somebody else's purchase.  the sales figures that
everybody watches (billboard, record companies, the artists themselves) can
only account for each new purchase right?  if the original buyer doesn't like
it and sells/trades it, and then somebody else comes along and picks it up
used, then isn't that an >additional< buyer unaccounted for?  it would seem
to follow then, that this impoverishes those figures, so that contracts,
airplay, distribution, potential new followers, even awards may be adversely
affected as well.  ah, the indigo girls, they're not selling like _insert
popular, almost always vapid, "artists" here_ so let's promote this other
group . . . let's give the grammy to milli vanilli.

in the interest of <supporting> the indigo girls then (or any other
musicians, and authors-- yes, i buy books used too, as much as i can) should
we forbear from buying their stuff used?  "support" takes on such weightier
implications when you think about this.

but who doesn't want to save money?  frugality is something i've grown
accustomed to.  $16.95, sometimes even $19.95 is just way too much for a cd.
although i remember a popular (record-selling) hip-hop group on mtv news
breaking down how that income is allocated: paying for studio time etc. i.e.
that a whole lotta sales doesn't neccessarily translate to a whole lotta $$
once everything is paid for.  not that a+e are in it for the money (as e.
jokes on "live at the uptown lounge"), but they need to live somehow right?
support.

i do know that a+e have a tremendous and loyal (sometimes frighteningly so)
fan base.  just from this newsgroup and (especially) the listserv, i see that
there are even bigger fans than me-- and i'm really bad.  so sales might not
necessarily affect them so dramatically as i typed up there.  but they are
taken into account.  and they do influence things (i'm recalling a thread on
the listserv a month or so ago about how we all felt about "sharing" them
with the masses if they got more airplay-- mainstream, commercial appeal, and
how it would affect them).

and i know that they are vigilantly aware and responsible about resources and
their use of them, so that they don't needlessly inflate their budgets.  so
it's not like we need to buy as many new copies of "map" to fund amy's broken
string collection.

but these things do matter though.  on some level.  right?  i have no problem
paying a few extra dollars for a new indigo girls cd if it means that they're
better off for it on some distant, unknowable, and (to me) imperceptible
level.  but i just wondered what everybody else thinks of this.  how do you
all go about purchasing the music (and books) of beloved artists-- especially
the independent, commercially unpalatable ones who need that kind of support?
how do you reconcile this with your own tight budgets (college students,
wastoids, single parent, immigrant not allowed to work, young'uns, shitty job
persons) and a monstrous industry with too much power and influence over your
world?  is buying a cd used a good way of sticking it to the man?  what about
a+e, would they support this?

it's like them trying to keep ticket, t-shirt and other merchandise prices
affordable for their fans.  like waiting for the paperback to come out, even
if it means studiously ignoring all the ecstatic reviews of toni morrison's
new book.  and even then buying it in a used book store.  all the talk of
amy's surprisingly high note in one of the new songs and emily's piano
playing.  i think i got off track. :)

i guess what i'm trying to say is that they recognize the (sometimes) obscene
amounts of money that fans are asked to spend in order to support them, and
that they are making certain efforts to keep it under control.  i don't know
how much of those $19.95 cd prices can be attributed to the faceless, "evil"
music industry-- or the appalling disproportion of wealth among the world's
countries, the rampant consumerism in america that influences the
increasingly westernized world-- but saving money, resources, as much as one
can seems obligatory now more than ever.  what's a simple listener of the
indigo girls to do when "map" is released?  how does the purchase of it, new
or used, figure into this network of greed, commercially validated
vacuousness, american imperialism via pamela anderson (lee)'s breasts,
vegetables for emily's garden, airplay, the frenzy of consumerism so evident
this time of year, the merging of entertainment corporations into big blobs
that means a more sterile, artistically bankrupt world is on its way?  or
does it matter?

otts
p.s. i'm gonna try to post this to the listserv too just so more people can
contribute their thoughts

ok, maybe it's me, but i started out trading tapes with about a half dozen
padded envelopes figuring that maybe they would multiply, or that i would
at least always have these 6.  but now, i don't have any.  how did this
happen?  sundara, do you have my envelopes?  how did they get all the way

hey...there's a new game!  i say the president of the sbmfc should get a
new envelope and when the next trade occurs, sign the back & send it on
it's merry way.  then, we will all see where the envelope travels!
everyone who gets it has to send email to the list telling everyone else
where the envelope is, and then has to reuse it.  they must also sign the
back before they forward it.  whaddya say?

as far as what to do with your 8000 padded envelopes, could i have 6?

this all depends.  you make a good argument on both sides of the coin.
i certainyl have been "guilty" of saving money by getting some cd's
used. (i have over 1300 at home, so there is a lot invested in cd's
anyway).  but not all cd's in the used store were once owned by someone
who bought it and didnt like it.  if you find a cd in a used storre
witha whole punched out of the bar code, or a notch in the side of
the case, those cd's were never sold.  they were originally given
to radio, or new music store employees or others in the biz.  those are
promos (some are even marked explicitly as such) and never counted as
a sale for the artist.

a group like ig, or mary chapin carpenter etc wont be as likely to
have their sales affected by some used cd purchases.  artists like
michelle malone, kristen hall, catie curtis, caroline aiken,
and many others who self produce or are on indie lables *are* more
likely to feel the effects of used cd stores.  they are artists
where if the label sees "insufficient" movement of product, they may
not have a chance to record again for the label.  or, if they did it
themselves, they may not make back their original investment or even
be able to support themsevles. (yes it gets down to taht.  a friend of mine
is part of a trio on rounder records and money is very tight for them
and their families.).  being on a label is not equivalent to financial
comfort for most artists, especially those just starting out.

so it is not an easy, cut and dry situation.  i like used cd stores
becuase sometimes i can find things cheap, and sometimes i can
find pre-release tapes or cd's of upcoming releases.  but i also try
to be aware of the implications of a used cd store purchase.  it's
a personal matter, really.  i hate spedning $16+ on a new cd, but i
did recently for some small label/self supporting artists i like
(les sampou, eddie from ohio) for 2 reasons:  to give some suport to
the artists, and to send a message to the store where i bought them
that there is interest in these artists and their music should be
continously stocked.  it really all just depends on your budget
and if you want to think about this stuff.

ok, i've got one last use for these little buggers & then i'll shut up, i
promise:  use them for padding to sleep on in emergencies.  this comes
courtesy of my poor gf sue who drives for seattle metro (city bus) & got
stuck in the snow yesterday & didn't get to leave the bus until *late*
last night when they finally told bus drivers to abandon their stuck
busses, & then she had to sleep on the cold hard floor at the metro base
& wake up at 5 this morning to drive again.  *plus* there was a guy who
snored like an elephant (not that the padding would have prevented that.)
so now you know what metro drivers go through to get you where you want
to go!

*still* all rummy from the snow here in seattle, & missing my gf! (who
according to latest reports lost a chain & is stuck again today)

subject:      scratched ig cd uses

i'm faced with the problem of owning a collection of ig cds that have been
severely scratched from gross over-use! it's reached the point where a few
of them are so bad off that i can't make it through two songs without it
skipping like mad, and that can be a huge frustration when one is trying to
sing along.

clearly i've reached the point where at least a few of them must be
replaced, but i'm puzzled as to what i should do with the old ones. they are
beyond the point where any cd exchange would accept them, and allowing them
to sit on a shelf somewhere seems like a crime. so what do i do? should i
give them to a friend who is close to being converted to ig fandom? is there
some sacred burial procedure for cds as holy as these? are there any
practical uses like we've found for padded envelopes? hmm...

eventually we may want to collect all these for a large modern art
sculpture.  in the meantime, however, i suggest they be reserved as
coasters for special indigo-listening parties.  for your nearly-converted
friends, splurge for good-condition used discs and put them in your old
cases.

used discs are no crime.  (i'm merging threads here.  we east coasters
are allowed to do that.  also to make bad puns.  that particular bad pun
was made by me and is not necessarily representative of the humor of
other east coasters.)  but if you need to support the artists directly,
look for new discs on sale....i don't believe they get paid more if the
new disc costs $16.99 instead of $11.99.  and at hmv--at least in
november--they were selling some cds 3 for $25.  that is how i bought
nis, ig, and sf.

they promised snow today in ct but it didn't come.  <--- weather report

yep, i probably have all of them.  everyone who is missing envelopes, i
probably have them.  heh heh heh.  here's the plan if anyone wants some
of my envelopes,  write me after jan 1, and i'll send you my boot list
(i haven't typed it in yet, so i can't send it to you now)  and you can
send me some blanks in a padded envelope, with some extra stamps for
postage, and i'll send you a big ole box full of envelopes.  and your
blanks.  and i'll sign em all the envelopes, and then you can sign them,
and they can travel all over the world.  kinda like the dreaded spam
mail, only this will be way more fun..  hee hee, or i can sew little
patchwork quilt boot jackets, and send them to whoever needs coats for
their boots.

hee hee

or maybe maybe my house is the mecca for padded envelopes. there is a
whole religion that the padded envelopes believe in, and we are
completely unaware of it, and my house is the promised land.  and all the
envelopes have been some how secretly making their way to my house.  when
you aren't looking, they jump in other envelopes that are going to be
sent to my house.  didn't we trade joni?  there ya go!  they snuck over.
they are like stowaways.  hee.

there are some pretty funny lists of uses for old aol cds circulating around
the web...try http://pubweb.acns.nwu.edu/~bil874/comedy/computers/aol.htm, or
searching for "uses for" +"aol cds". ig cds would be the same, in principle.

my favorite suggestion is to sew them all together and make a really neato
vest...of course, you'd need a lot of cds for that one.

nobody should have to listen to the girls skip.  that would be sacrilege.  if
ya have an old microwave oven that you will never be preparing food in ever
again, turn the lights off & toast them (one at a time) for several seconds.
it'll be the coolest self-contained electrical storm you'll ever see.  just
don't be playing touch me fall while you're doing it.  too retro-60's.  far
out.

well, gang, since there seems to be a lot of bored people out there, i
definitely included, would any of you be so kind is to do me a favor?
in fact this could be pretty cool to see how many different opinions and
significances (is that a word?) there are on this list.
okay for all those that are interested, pull out your so and ins cd's (yes,
even you, abigail-- or at least the lyrics!!!)  i am trying to decide between
the two of these to give a "friend" for christmas. (no, micki isn't totally
dense, she just didn't get the priveledge of seeing him on christmas but will
be seeing him next week!!)  since none of you know him, i know you can't tell
me which he'd like better, but i thought if you guys could give me your ideas
and feelings on the songs from these two albums it might make my decision
easier.  (i usually flip a coin or play paper*rock*scissors to make major
decisions-- that's how patheticly undecisive i am!)  besides, what better
things do you have to do?  (okay, don't answer that.)
if everyone is interested in throwing their opinions in there, reply to the
group, otherwise, you can e-me privately!
btw, sundara, you didn't happen to get one of my christmas presents in a
padded envelope, did you?  (thanks carrie for the idea!)  i was supposed to
get it the 23rd and it still isn't here yet.  since all the envelopes seem to
be congregating with you, i thought it was worth a try.
always,
mic --who is thankful to anyone who would be bored enough to take the time to
evaluate their feelings about a few songs for the benefit of a fellow ig fan

the melding of threads continues:

for padded envelopes, i suggest we all painstakingly extract all of
those tiny bubbles from each of the envelopes. then when amy and emily
have their first network tv special they can take all 43 zillion tiny
bubbles and float them around the set while they play.  lawrence welk
for the 90's.

for scratched cds, a (comparitively) sane suggestion.  they can be used
for cool mobiles.  string em up in a sunny spot and watch the rainbows
dance.

actually, ive seen this in action.  there is a small music store in nj run
by a friend of my family's, and whenver they have cd's that they're done
listening to, and/or dont like, they string them up in columns and hang them
from the ceiling, and they also have those drop ceilings with the ceiling
tiles that you can poke up and everything(y'all know what i mean?? like,
rectangle blocks) well where the beam supports are, they put them in the
corners, so they have cd's hung all over the ceiling! its really neat.
another thing to do with those dead beat cd's you'd rather bury than listen
to!!

back to lurking!

hiya!
i wasn't aware of what rayanne's starting bid for the strange fire
vinyl album was, but i made a quick phone call, and now i know. apparently
someone from rainy day records offered her around $300 for it, which i know
is quite a bit higher than any offers i've heard so far. anyway, just
wanted to let y'all know.... now back to my post-christmas nap....
g'night and happy holidays!
