happy new year all !!!
well my power just came back on for the first time since christmas.
the weather out hear in the pnw is a bit dreadful...allmost biblical.
(it  just wont quit).
so...my main focus the past week has been to melt enough snow on
the ol' woodstove to get enough water to flush the toilet
(...we wont even go there...).
also, reviving frozen iguanas that i am taking care of for for a friend
who is on vacation (long story...) needless to say a large male iguana
named "baby" and i are now 'soulmates' for life :)
no real igc...just wanted to reach out and touch 900 people.
and let those who have sent me tapes to dub know that i'll be gettin
them done now...(will also finally get to hear my new utah phillips cd
that i got for christmas :):):)
peace, love and warm reptiles !!!

hi all,

hope new year's was cool for everyone.

igc...rolling over in a post new year's headache this morning, i was
pleasantly surprised to hear gailileo on 99x, the local atlanta radio
station. they're doing an all day 99 of the most influential cds of all
time voted on by the listeners. rites of passage turns out to be #73. i'm
defintly not putting much stock in the countdown considering i didn't get
to vote and nirvana's nevermind, even though it was a pretty good album,
will probably be voted number 1. never know, they could have gotten a
barrage of e-mails from fanatic ig fans. :)

take care,

happy new year!!!!  hope at least some of you aren't so hung over that you
can't enjoy my rather irrelevant (but exciting for me) story!

okay, i was driving to the closest mall an hour and a half away to exchange a
pair of
jeans for not the first or second, but third time and so of course, i pop in
the ig for the drive.  well, i get to the mall and go in abercrombie and
fitch (i think this is a pretty nation wide store since it is based out of
london) and am looking for my size and singing along with the music when i
realize "wait just a minute, i'm no longer in my car and closer to fine is
playing."  i freak out (just a little bit) since i've never ever heard the ig
anywhere but from my cd's.  i grab (well, not actually) a sales lady who
obviousely has never heard of the indigo girls and ask her if they are
playing a cd or the radio thinking maybe some salesperson was a fellow fan.
it turns out that the management base of abercrombie puts together a
collection of the best music and forces (abercrombie has some pretty strict
rules from what i have heard) every store to play these tapes.  pretty cool
since that means the ig are being heard in their stores all over the world.
anyway, i went to abercrombie's webpage and found some pretty cool music
links.  unfortunately, i couldn't find any ig stuff, but i did find several
links for any of you who are in a band and trying to get your music heard.
here are those links:
http://www.abercrombie.com/2/edge.html
http://www.iuma.com  (this link also has a place to find good instruments
near you!)
http://www.kathoderay.org
all of these are pretty cool and regardless of whether you are in a band if
you're bored you should check them out.
well, that's my waste of bandwith.

always,
mic

i've been away from my happy little email machine for days and days, so i'm
probably now posting to an old thread that no-one cares about... but what
about music clubs like bmg?  there, you can get new cds for cheap cheap...
and again, the artist doesn't lose at all by it.

but then there's the question of whether i'd rather support my local
longhair used-cd store owner type person, or big corporate bmg... and the
question of whether, perhaps, reducing our norte americano consumerism by
re-using a cd 'stead of buying a new one is as important or more important
than supporting our favorite artist  financially.... this is only a thought
in favor of buying used cds, not copying cds onto tape... i dont know and
im far too tired to think about it anyway

best emily lyric:
i don't want the best for you/'cause where will i be when you found it?/i

best nigc lyric of 1996:

just that i'm so tired/i never felt so uninspired/ -- me (not me, silly),
meeeeee, the lavender lieutenant.  i figure the only way i'm ever gonna get a

event i will be wearing jeans (black, this is formal, ya know), a t-shirt
(purple, naturally), a black statin paisley tuxedo jacket (very stylish),
sorry, no combat boots (i said this is formal), cowboy boots instead (all i ne

speech: "thanks, y'all!"  oh wait, that would be amy's.  okay, how 'bout:
"thanks for listening!" no, that would be emily's.  ooooh, i got it: i'll
flash the peace sign (or "v" as in victory) and say: "power to the purple

subject:      my new year's eve!  (ligc)

wow.  my first email of 1997.  because i have to, *have to*, have to tell
somebody what happened to me on new years eve because i have never laughed so
hard in my life.

so here i am--a senior in high school, i live in a town home complex complete
with guards at the entrance, and i'm throwing the new years party for my
friends and yes, i admit it, alcohol was present.  no one was trashed, we
were just, uh, celebrating, and everyone was spending the night.
anyway--it's about 1:00 am and suddenly there is a strange man downstairs in
uniform flashing me his *badge*, asking me how the party was going, how old i
was, and if there was any alcohol present.   i remember looking behind me at
a table _full_ of wine glasses, turned back, and  seriously said "it doesn't
appear to be so...."

what followed went basically like this.  "hey we're not here to bust you up.
i'm the security guard, but i don't care if you're drinking as long as
noone's driving home.  i'm 24.  can i party with you guys?!  and this is
scott, he's the other security guard.  we're bored."

i fell over laughing.  right there.  "of course, join the party, can i get
you something?"   it was too much.   so we partied with the security officers
(what were we supposed to do, no, you can't come in?).  all listened to ig
(there's my indigo girl content, girls, it was definitely a 1200 curfews
night).  they let us play with their walkie talkies (hee hee).  "how long
till my soul gets it right, over."

so there's my funny new years story.  (and i feel so safe and secure now
knowing the truth about the security officers :)

happy new year everyone!

sam (who is convinced that the strangest things in the world only happen to
her)

alec grins evilly.... hey, i know something about that...

sorry to ruin all your blissful peace made by my not being local for a
while, but quick, get your shotgun, i'm back for a bit...  in the proccess
of moving actually, but who's counting, right?

for those musicians out there, this could be painful, but if you don't know
what a 1-4-5 is, listen in  :-)

the reason i was able to tab out shame on you regardless of my pathetic ear
is because of that lovely chord progression, the
1-4-5.  what does this have to do with shame on you, well, lots... to get
kinda musically theoretical about it, there are the standard eight notes in
the major scale:  (i'm gonna use the key of a major because soy is in that
key  :)

a   b  c# d  e  f# g# a
do rey mi fa so la ti do
1   2  3  4  5   6  7  8

well, if you'll notice the top rows, the capital letters are the chords
that, when playing the scale are major, as opposed to the lower case ones,
which are minor...  the three major chords in the scale are the 1, the 4,
and the 5 chords...  in the key of a major (the key of soy) the chords are
a, d, and e.  as such, so are the chords in soy...  this is to say that
that they are very common...  joking is based on a one four five, as is
ctf, though they have chords added in, they are still...  land of canaan is
a good example too.... the point behind all of this, as it relates to the
subject line, is that the 1-4-5 is a well established chord progression,
and becuase of this, many songs will have these chords, the only difference
between them is how they are played...  here's a short list of painfully
obvious ones...

what i like about you
la bamba
twist and shout...

the list goes on... glad to say something on the list again, so i said so
much... whoops, have a great day,

alec

hey all,
i've been doing some surfing lately and came across some interesting sites:

the lifeblood sites (if you haven't found it yet) has some great stuff, like
lyrics (even to the independent years), reviews and articles and a search
feature. as well as links to pages about michelle malone.  here's the link:  <
a href="http://www.hidwater.com/lifeblood/ig.html">lifeblood: a collection of
indigo girls information</a>  and if that link doesn't work here's the
address out in longhand: http://www.hidwater.com/lifeblood/ig.html

i've also found a relatively informative web site that has a faq for bootlegs
and trading; it has alot of information in the same place.  it''s great for
newbies, but some of you older traders might find it helpful too. it has
definitions on different types tapes and the noise reduction debate and
different rating systems that people use. as well as other infomation about
send overseas, and taping concerts. to keep me from rambling any longer just
check it out yourself:  <a href="http://druuna.tky.hut.fi/~toka/maiden/ftp-dir
ectory-maiden/misc/alt.music.bootlegsfaq.txt">bootleg faq</a> . again if that
didn't work here's it the long way:
http://druuna.tky.hut.fi/~toka/maiden/ftp-directory-maiden/misc/alt.music.boot
legsfaq.txt   (sorry it's so long, but i didn't write it did i?)

i have a question that i was hoping some of you more experience traders could
help me with.  do you know if it's okay to rerecord over (good quality) tapes
or does that diminish quality of the dub? email me personally  if you know
the answer. and if it is okay to rerecord, is it best to just simply rerecord
over or to magnetically erase the tape?
also, what does sase stand for.

thanks for scrolling this far!

subject:      thoughts on being 24 and triple lists...

suzi's post about being on three lists and being on the same three
(although i never seem to post to dar) made me think-isn't it cool
what a little community we have going on? i love the ability of like
minded people to find a way to find eachother...yup p, the rain is
getting to my brain, but i just think its so sweet, all these people
who just love women who make good music (men make good music too, but
there aren't any men in the 4 people i'm talking about, :) and we all
found eachother!!aww...yay! *warmfuzzies make the storm go away!*

and, abigail's birthday musings made me think i should do some of my
own....this is the first day i've been on line since my birthday, and
i must say, it wasn't the most fantabulous one i've ever had, but it
was still a stepping stone, another year to get heavier by the
load...but i made my goal! in june, i said i would have my own car
(used but i love it...ordered my ig bumper sticker!), an apartment of
my own (well, i share but i am *out* of the parents house!) and a job
where i can make ends meet without commiting suicide (achieved,
barely!) so i am proud proud proud!!! (sorry to yell, i'm just so
excited)

i think that the community and support we get is the best thing about
this list and i think a&e would like that part.

love to all,

i have a request.  i've been reading peoples commentaries on map

new musical wonder.  if some kind, generous soul has it in their hearts

hi all...  as of right now i've started to put together the indicatur...
i've been using moj's boot page as starter...  right now there are a few
shows in there...  i have it set up as a database in access95...  if there
is anyone out there who would like to help me with some data entry, and has
95, i'm now putting together a list of the shows i have, and will post it
as soon as i divide up labor betwixt people who would be so kind as to help
with the button pushing...  thanks alot y'all, and i'll be sending out
things as soon as i can...  right now it looks like i will be building
indicatur in visual basic, and then, once i learn visual c++ (i'm slowly
working on it) i'll migrate it to that, so i can compile for mac, win16,
and unix as well...  tom jobe:  brilliant name, and i haven't forgotten
about the cgi thing...

i think big, and i might even produce something up to par as well...  /me

hey there fellow listees--i just wanted to share my excitement and once again
thank all of you for your .02 regarding guitars etc . . . i bought one!!
after playing tons of guitars for the past three weeks i finally decided on a
seagull.  these are made in canada and are excellent guitars for the money.
they are also environmentally correct.  check out their story on the
web--search under seagull--very interesting.
i am excited to learn to play.  i know quite a few basic chords but not much
beyond that.  i found some ig songs on the web that i am muddling through
(blood and fire, nashville, and fugitive).  i am wondering if there are any
other 'beginner' ig songs.  it seems that amy writes songs using much simpler
chords (good thing that i am an amy person :-).  i would love it if anyone has
the words and chords to hey kind friend or shame on you.
well, i hope that all of you in the pnw are faring okay--thoughts and prayers
are with you!
happy new year to everyone!

one of my favorite ig songs to play is "centerstage." it's one of only a few
songs i know how to play using d-tuning.  anyway, i wanted to tell camille
that, imo, ig like to use the c9 chord a-lot, i'm not very good at drawing it
out here, but, look-it-up, when you get a chance. when you learn that one,
and use the capo, you'll nail-down many of their tunes. currently, i'm trying
get the 'feel' right for galileo, i have the chords figured-out, but, can't
play it like ms. sailers...one of these days, i'm gonna tackle the wood song.

as another member of the triple list club (ig/dar/catie) with suzi and
larissa, i gotta say i couldn't agree more.  i'd like to add that while i
am on three lists, and have spent time on other lists as a lurker (r
thompson, springsteen, etc.) the indigo girls list will always be home!
this is the best community of all of them.   : )   hope that wasn't too
gushy for any of you.

now, the mailing list survey:
i've always found it really interesting to see who is on other lists and
to see what a mix of tastes we have on this list, and i've been thinking
about doing a survey of what other lists people are on for a while.
soooo,  since i'm coming out of my crazy time at work,  i think i'll do
it now.  why not.

please send any responses to me!!!!  not to the list!!!!!

if you are interested in participating, please send me a list of the
other mailing lists you are on.
for each list (including this one), please say whether you are a posting
participant or a lurker,
and if you are there transiently or there to stay, and your rating of the
list on a 1 to 5 scale, where
1 is a really awful list and 5 is the best list in the world.
please write lists as the subject line or keep the same subject line i
used.

i will repost this when people are back at school from winter break, then
i will post a summary of the results sometime after that.  i hope
everyone who is on other lists will participate, i am interested to see
the results.

let me stress again, please do not send any responses to the list!  send

subject:      igc - questions...

hello,
i haven't posted much at all in the time i've been on this list.  actually, only once.  but... maybe it can be a new year's resolution to post more!  or not.  anyway, my first question...
i was so super lucky to get the watershed video for christmas (joy!).  on the least complicated video, they put the chords up on the screen that em and am are playing.  i followed the chord progressions in my head  (i'm a music major - i knew those ear training classes would be useful for something! ;)  and they are playing what's on the screen.  what puzzles me is that most of the chords are only a major 2nd away from each other (like if one is playing a g major chord, the other is playing an a major chord).  this *should* cause some major dissonance, and be really difficult to listen to.  are the chords on the screen the same one's they're playing?  i don't have perfect pitch, i can only follow the progressions in my head.  have my years of ear training all gone to waste?  maybe i'm just not hearing the guitars clear enough because of the other instruments.  also, which chords belong to who?  (<--amy or emily)
i'm lost.  so if anyone can help me get unlost, i'd be forever indebted to you.

next question:  (this will be shorter, i promise)  on sf, the song get together... is this an original ig song?  i know this is probably a stupid question, but i've got to know for sure.  :)

well, this has been a banner week for me in my own little ig land.  ctf was played on the radio - a rare occurance in ma.  i was sooo happy!  and... i caught my little sister singing along to my ig tapes!!!  wish me luck... maybe i can recruit another "crazed" fan!  :)

so, that's all folks.  sorry this is so long!
fare thee well,
beth

subject:      fade out

hey all...
forgive me if this has been brought up before (or if the reason it was
never brought up before is uninterestingness - yeah, i know i just made
that up), but does anyone know of any songs ig have recorded where they
ended the song by fading out?  i know this is a weird question, but i
was practicing with my band yesterday, and we were working on a new song
and trying to come up with a way to end it (always difficult for us).
somebody suggested that we just fade out, and when i got home, i started
thinking about how out of all the songs ig have recorded, i think they
have all had a definite ending - not one fade out.  maybe this is not so
unusual, but i can't think of any other cd's i own that don't have at
least one fade out song on them.  maybe it's because they place such
emphasis on touring (it's pretty hard to do a fade out in a live show)?
take it easy...

i was on social-interaction overload, but email is okay by me.

anywho...after being subjected to 2hours of barbara streisand by my
lovely office mate i am now listening to women live from mountain stage,
which gwen suggested that i purchase and i love.

but i was thinking about some of the other artists on the album.  they
are all very talented.  i love the dar song, it fits me to a t.  but
anyway...heart is the reason i decided to post after a long lag of
posting.  they were the first female duo i was ever exposed to and i
think they were responsible for my openess and love of the indigo girls.
i remember sitting on my parents living room floor at a very young age
and just loveing the words to dog and butterfly.  i played that album
over and over again.  so, does anyone else feel the same way?

subject:      re: igc - questions

i have the answer to beth's least complicated question- i think.  i
don't actually have any musical talent, but i do have the so songbook,
which is close enough.  you're right about the chords only being a mjr.
2 away from each other most of the time but what the video neglects to
mention is that amy's guitar has a capo on the 2nd fret so all those
g's, c's and d's become a's, d's and e's.  as for who plays what- emily
does the picking and plays a, asus4, asus2, a, asus2, etc. in the intro
and amy plays g for a lot of the song.
i don't think your years of music training have gone to waste.  i think
you just heard the chord progression but in the wrong key, not that i
can do better-  i can barely even tune my guitar w/o a tuner :-)

hallo, all!

well, on the recent topic of other lists we belong to, (this has ig
content; i sent my other reply off the list! :) )the other one i
consistently belong to is gymn--a gymnastics forum. why does this matter?
well, one of the big gymn mags is titled "international gymnast" and is
abbreviated in the gymn community as (what else?) ig. one one
particularily bad day i was paging through the gymn digest and caught "ig"
out of the corner of my eye and naturally freaked out-- what? ig fans on
the gymn list? waa-hoo! then: oh. oops. :)

by the way, are there any mac users out there who know how to change
start-up and other sounds (besides the normal alert one) or tag them onto
actions--such as closing windows, emptying trash, etc.? my mac is begging
for amy and emily to sing forth from its speakers!

thanks, y'all! (tee-hee.)

hey!

i think it was beth (questioning her ear training) who wondered
why one set of lc chords were g related and one set a related--
the song is in the key of a, but if one uses a capo on the
second fret of the guitar and plays a g chord--it's now an
*a* chord in the *g* position.  same key, different chord
position.

i think >ghost< is a fade out ending song, too.

off to find some coffee,

hi-

i've liked the indigo girls since their first album came out - but i
don't have any boots of theirs. i need to change this.

i heard them cover "american tune"  on the radio months ago and have
been wanting to get a copy of it ever since.

is there anyone out there who would be willing to copy this for me?
i'm not too particular what boot it is. i'd be willing to supply
tapes/ postage or work out a trade if that's preferred - most of my
tapes / boots are u2 ones.

the songs that i'm looking for:
american tune
closer to fine
3 hits
galileo
kid fears
prince of darkness
romeo and juliet
secure yourself
tried to be true
love's recovery
land of canaan
blood and fire
ghost
love will come to you
let it be me
jonas & ezekiel

those are the songs that i love of theirs.... is there a boot w/ them
(or most of them on it?)

i would be so grateful if someone would help me out...

thanks-
roisindubh

ps what's this tribute album " indicated v. 1,2, & 3"  about? can
someone give me some info on that too? thanks again!

then i went to the kitchen to make ice cream cones for my kids, and got
to hear emily's gnarly electric guitar (from bury my heart at wounded

they clashed beautifully.

okay, y'all...

i know this has been posted before, but i'm making an ig tape for a friend

stuff too, about half and half, but this is a guy that normally listens to
things like metallica, korn, sepulchura, etc!

so here's what i have so far, out of my meagre collection (hey, i'm poor):

welcome me                  language or the kiss
watershed                   this train revised
keeper of my heart          leeds
power of two                blood quantum
hand me downs               it's alright
fare thee well              don't give tgag

i'm thinking about kid fears though, and wondering also if i should include
tried to be true...argh, this is hard.

happy new years (yes i know it is belated, but anyway...)

just curious if anyone wants lyrics to ig songs, i have about 151 songs
they have either wrote or covered, thanx to some people and random web
pages, so if anyone wants them just let me know   by the way i am looking
for the lyrics to the following:
dannys song
hammond song
i wanna be your lover
its too late
malachys
if anyone could help i would greatly appriciate it, plus if anyone has any
obscure lyrics could you send them to me

this talk about wavs and such, i am again offering a wav file editor for
the ibm, it is not very complicated and works pretty good, plus i have 4
ig wavs back together again, closer to fine, tangled up in blue, and world
falls if anyone is interested

hope everyone is having a great day=-)

oh yeah, those who i owe tapes to, ill be mailing them out (hopefully) on
tuesday, sorry for the long delay=-(

subject:      motivated by guilt: igc

sigh.

motivated by guilt (as well, to a degree, by wanting to "payback the
list" some for all the wonderful boots i have now), we are rather interested
in offering an outstanding quality copy of "in with the out crowd" to
listers.  the guilt comes from tracy's having (confession here) paid actual
money (bad tracy!! bad bad!!!) for this boot as an xmas gift to jeni.
consider it a twisted ethical payback... or at least a bizarre version of
the neiman marcus cookie spam urban myth... lol?

anyhow, at first (being newbies to offering diddly to a gazillion
"strangers") we would just like to gauge interest.  if you are interested in
this boot trade, please email me by wednesday, 8 january 11pm pacific time.

the boot is from 2 shows (both in gb - one 94, one 95), with one
studio acoustic track added. it is outstanding quality.. in fact (ahem,
</shameful look>) one might even say cd quality. songs are: fugitive,
galileo, hammer & nail, this train (revised), least complicated, ghost,
chickenman <a cool version, and i am not usually a big lover of this song>,
kid fears, closer to fine, bmhawk, power of two, closer to fine <yes,
again>, three hits, and cortez the killer. </shameful look>

        so here's what we're thinking... it'll be a str8 (so to speak) 1:1
tape trade... you send your tape and we'll tape onto it and send it back in
your sase.

once again: if you are interested, please email me by wednesday. if
you feel like flaming me for obtaining this boot in the naughty way...
well... errr... [whiny voice] flame jeni cuz' i got it for her cuz' i wanted
to get her something ig she didn't already have and she has an awful lot...
and well... cuz'... cuz'... cuz' i feel bad already.  :-) actually, flame
kim the goddess in her own reality just cuz' i don't think she's received
any good flames in quite awhile and we wouldn't want her to feel unloved.

hey y'all, does anyone know what this song is specifically about?  i mean,
does anyone know of any intro that emily gave for this song that can give
even the tiniest (sp?) of insight.  i scream the words out (why? why?
why?) and i love this song, but i'm just confused.  is she singing about
one person or about a couple of different people?  is that the person
dreaming with the one shoe off, or is it emily who's the only one
dreaming?  i know that this was a fairly new song and they only performed
it during the really late demo shows (i think), but just figured i'd throw
the question out to you all-knowing ig fans =)

hey all,

newbie user, although this is my third post (remeber my request for indigo
dicovery stories?).  anyway thought i would tell you about my day yesterday.
being a poor high school student i went to a store that sells used cds and
tapes.  no other place in la crosse wisconsin sells anything but top 40 and
the like.  i went with this list:  ferron, terry gondi, ani difranco, cutie
curtis, kate woodward, lary winger, michelle malone, careline aiken, luka
bloom, big fish ensemble, blood quantum, bansheet, vic chesnut, shawn colvin,
gail ann dorsey, lisa german, kristen hall, hot house flowers, and a few
others all of which i have heard about here or from some other ig source.  i
found 2 ani difranco cds in the new cd racks, but not dilate and they were
kinda expensive.  they also had a few commercial ig cds as well as uptown
girls for $35.  i passed.  in the used cds i could find only michelle
malone's band de soleil.  so i bought that and a used eurythmics tape.
i have'nt decied if i like band de soleil yet.  the album is called
redemption drem and was released on amy's label daemon records.  its kinda
dark and bluesy but slowly grwoing on me.
i also got my ig fan club newsletter last week.  russell carter said they
were almost done with maps, would go on a promo tour, a summer tour, college
tour, with some europe and high school dates.  then an honor the earth tour
and a theater duo tour in the fall.  good news for us!  he also said they
would appear on lettermen, leno, and pbs this year.  then he pushed there web
page http://www.indigogirls.com.  following his letter was a long chatting
hand written letter from emily.  she had a good year off.  then some pictures
from their trip to mexico, and a call to action letter from amy.  anyway this
not is getting long and i know i am stalling because i don't want to study so
i will end here.

subject:      new year's at rdr (nigc)

well, after 1300 miles of round-trip driving, i'm back from my new year's
eve in atlanta. i had had an _amazing_ time, and you should all be very
jealous. :) so much went on that i can't even begin to cover it all, but
lemme see if i can hit some highlights:

last saturday michelle malone was to play at eddies. she was,
unfortunately, sick, but fortunately for us we were treated to another
amazing new artist. doria roberts was from philly, and she _immediately_
captured the hearts of everyone in the crowd. she played again on new
year's eve at rdr, and again the next night at the now benefit at eddies,
and people just went bananas over her. she did some ani covers, which
were apropriate since her voice is very similar to ani's. her cd comes
out this spring. get it!

another new surprise this week was a young man by the name of kevin so.
he had basically the same effect on the crowd as doria. we all just loved
him. he's a real crowd pleaser, and his cd is already out.

new year's at rdr was an incredible blast, thanks once again to perry and
marsha. they deserve a _huge_ pat on the back for all the work they did
to pull this thing off. it was about 12.5 hours of incredible music. i'm
hooked, and i'm definitely going again next year.

the now benefit was just non-stop fun. it was a cover show with viva la
diva, kristen hall (i finally got to see her!), shawn mullins, adam
dorfman, chris chandler, doria roberts, sulli, and others. they covered
everything from prince's purple rain, to purple haze, to hey jude, to
piano man, to rockytop, and they even chucked in ctf and pushing the
needle for good measure. i don't think i stopped
laughing/clapping/smiling the whole time.

a _brief_ and by no means inclusive list of some of my favorites from
the week of festivities:

shawn mullins, doria roberts, kevin so, uncle mark reynolds, chris
chandler, lift, viva la diva, phil norman (woo hoo!), matthew kahler, adam
dorfman, sulli, and caroline aiken...

finally, a special "hi" to sarah, and phil, and julie g., and nancy, and
rose, and susan, and jocelyn, and joan, and about 87 other people who
aren't on this list right now. i love all you guys, and i really wish i
could have spent more time with each of you. i'll miss y'all till next
time.

ok, i'm sure you didn't mean this in a bad way, and i know this is an old
thread, etc, etc, but i just wanted to jump to amy's defense here. you
were right to say that amy would make a comment on this issue because
1)she knows what she's talking about, 2) she understands stuff about the
music industry, and 3) she's a good person who's doing her level best to
keep us all honest. nothing wrong with that. :)

happy new year listees!
< lurking listee squints into the light, feeling a bit like
lestat after a refreshing nap beneath the altar>
well, i've nearly scrolled through the over fifty digests that
accumulated during a brief but painful offline stint and i just
thought i'd post a couple of questions and things:
      1)  anyone know what ever became of the alleged ig appearance
on american journal?
(okay, i haven't read *every* digest, so i might have missed this
info.)
      2)  umm, i think the song "scooter boys" mentioned at the
rolling stone website as being on map *may* be an old fine young
cannibles song - errrr, any fyc fans out there to collaborate?
rolling stone calls it a "rocker" but if it's the song i'm thinking
of it's really sort of ska-based, sort of proto-punk -- which would
be tre cool for 'da girls.
      3)   season's greetings and happy new year.
      4)   i hope the rumor about the band lift opening for the girls
is true.  they're really good. the last daemon mailer said their new
cd would be released on it.  i think their first cd, stellar, is
available through thier website - if not, surely rdr has it.
      5)   is it just me, or did anyone else think that babe, in the
movie babe, was a lesbian?
now, i haven't read the book but....
      6)   anyone got a gibson sg reissue (with the burgundy finish)
that they'd like to unload?
      7)   i just read the progressive mag article partaining to
tobacco offerings and such and
wanted to post that if the terms "miracle" and "janesville, wi" mean
something to anyone, please email me, i'd like to chat about a 'way
cool' experience.
     8)    i miss atlanta!
     9)    having expressed #9 ('number 9, number 9, number 9' -
random beatles reference) and finding myself wintering in mn, i just
wanted to ask:
"hey, dana, how's jen's arm healing up?  i've got some guitar stuff
that i was gonna snail mail to her if she's interested?"

i doubt it, since in _babe,_the_gallant_pig_ by dick king-smith (the book on
which the movie "babe" was based), babe is a male pig.

hey...
i got this dissappear fear cd about 2 weeks ago, its in perfect
condition and all...  they're pretty good, but not really my personal
favorite...  i was wondering if any of y'all would be intersted in it
for, like, $5 or $6...  i can send it to you...  its the cd with
washington work week on it.  the girls sing on three songs...
theoretically, i should like it, its two talented women, and of course,
amy and emily sing on it, but the cd just hasn't rubbed off on me yet...
going once, going twice....

hey go-heads!

susan's question about the release date of so has inspired a new trivia
question to ask the list.  i am really pleased with this one, but after i
get five responses in the next five minutes, i probably won't be.  :)

anyway, here it is...

what major event occured on the same day that swamp ophelia was released,
and how does it relate to ig besides coinciding with the release of
  that cd??

seems vague, but if past reponses are any indication, a handful of you will
get it.

oh, and after several close listens to my mesa, az boot, i think amy is
saying 'scooter boys and argentinians'.  the idea that this little snippet
of a song in the middle of chickenman could be a whole new amy song fills
will me with excitement that i just can't express.  :)  i really love that tune.

subject:      (nigc)  new year's eve/day @ rdr/eddie's

hi folks,

i gotta second what lorinda said about atlanta artist kevin so.
the best i can describe his music is folk/blues/funky stuff.  he is awesome
and he really had the crowd's attention/involvement at rdr on nye (all of
these acronyms...arrgghh!).  anyway this was my first exposure to local
atlanta artists other than ig, michelle malone, kristen hall, and people like
the now-defunct ejs.  i had heard a lot about shawn mullins, but had never
actually heard his music.  he is awesome.  he has such a unique voice...i
hesitate to make comparisons/label people, but do so only to communicate what
he is like.  his voice is kind of hard to describe, but i felt like maybe it
was kind of a male version of someone like ani or shawn colvin.  i'm sure there
will be people who disagree with that, but that's about the best i can do!
i was also impressed with doria roberts.  her voice is, as lorinda pointed
out, reminiscent of ani's (especially when she sang not a pretty girl at eddie's
on wed. nite), and she also seems to have a great sense of humor/personality.
i finally heard caroline aiken at rdr and fell in love with her voice/guitar
playing!  the now benefit at eddie's on wed. nite was a total, absolute, all-out
blast! (please pardon the redundancies<g>)  i got to see kristen hall live for
the first time, which was a *major* treat.  she seems like a pretty neat person.
i did not go in there expecting to like viva la diva, but left there really
liking them.  cooper's pretty cool.  all of the artists that played the now
benefit at eddie's are great and worthy of further listening:  adam dorfman,
spoken word artists chris chandler and uncle mark reynolds, the very cool (imho)
robin leigh kessler, and of course, the very talented sulli, in addition to
the artists i mentioned earlier.  i'm sure i've probably left someone out, but
those are the artists that really affected me.  loved the ambience of eddie's
attic. what a cool place to listen to good acoustic music.  and it was very
cool to meet up with my pals allison and will, fellow nojf travelers cylinda
and howdy, and meet for the first time yen, lorinda, sarah, susan and jocelyn.
what nifty people :)

wishing everyone peace, love, happiness and prosperity (oh yeah, and lots of
great music) during the coming year! :)

joan :)

hmmm...well, it worked for mandy, so i'll give it a try too...
i've got the same disappear fear cd, which i bought about a month ago.  i
just can't get into them either.  so, i would be more than happy to sell it
for a greatly reduced price to the first person who writes me for it.  also,
i've got two other cds you all might be interested in.  sorry, but i just can't
really get into ani's "dilate" cd or the ellen james society cd "relunctantly
we."  same offer for those cds.  don't even think about flaming me, cause
i purchased the cds and therefore, the artists involved received their
mechanical royalties/income.  i would like to give these cds a home where
they will be listened to and enjoyed, so that i can perhaps make room in
my collection for a new caroline aiken cd!

peace and recycling,

joan :)

subject:      a new ig experience

hello list-

are you tired and anxious awaiting the arrival of the new album?  have you
had enough of trying to keep ig songs fresh by listening to old boots with
poor quality?  can you no longer take trying to get depressed on your own
just so love's recovery will be have some current meaning instead of
reminding you of that relationship from 6 years ago?  does marking up your
rand mcnally road atlas with potential ig tour routes while simultaneously
thinking you're cool because you are looking at a map and that happens to
be the name of the next album have you frustrated and bored?

well fret no longer.  today on amazing discoveries we are introducing the
answer to your ig 3 month waiting period until map enters the world.  the
answer lies in those big ass bulky headphones you have in your closet.  yes
that's right go dig them out and plug them in.  try re-listening to all of
your old ig with headphones.  and crank it.  you can hear things you have
never heard before.  ***an extra added bonus***---you can easily answer
previous list debates--find out exactly who says moo from the galileo intro
on 1200 curfews.  and find out exactly who says woo right after the thin
line intro.  and yes--hear a and e take breaths in between verses.  it's
like having your very own ig right in your living room.  go now.  go
quickly.  stop the insanity of trying to like fare thee well because you've
skipped it so many times and it's the only song you haven't heard in
awhile.  start with 1200 curfews and feel like you are in the front row.
and the cost to you is nothing--you already have all their cd's.  so just
dig out those headphones and start your new ig experience today.
guaranteed to have you feeling chipper even if listening to blood and fire.

have a good week y'all and a happy 1997.

anyway, since noone is in school yet i have to bitch osomeone about
yesterday. ok i had to take a commuter flight from baltimore to newark
and then from newark to az. well i go toi sleep on the commuter flight
and when i wake up i see that we're suspended in mid air. the weather was
so bad that we went back to balitimore and waited till the weather cleared.
well, 10 hours later the weather cleared and we took that 1 hour flight.
then when we landed in newark there was another 4 hour delay....then the
plane ride was 6 hours. but to top it all off they lost my bags(including
my new guitar). although they found one bag my guitar is still out there
in americawest land.
ok i guess i have to have some indigo content. whenever i travel back
home i always take all my ig stuff with me in a carry on in case it the
airline lost it. it finally paid off. i would have ran around the airport
screaming if they lost my ig stuff and finally gointo cardiac arrest. so
here's to being obsessive!!!

think i've posted a total of 7 or 8 dreams (i'm purely guessing)  anyway,
thank y'all for reading them, or responding about them, or just deleting
them and not flaming me.  for those of you who haven't had an ig
dream yet, all i can say is good luck and be patient.  i love my ig
dreams, and wished i had more, but whatever.  anyway, onto my dream!

***
ok, i'm on a bus.  (wow!  almost all of my dreams start at an ig concert,
or end up there, this one has no concert in it but much igc nonetheless :)
the bus isn't a school bus, or a coach bus, but it's some type of
commercial bus, ok lets call it a greyhound, anyway...  the bus is stopped
and everyone is exiting.  my partner and i are about three quarters of the
way back.  as i'm waiting, i look to the back of the bus and who do i see?
amy and emily!  yea! :)  apparently no one else realizes who they are.
but i do, and i let everyone else leave before us except amy and emily.  i
step out before them, acting real casual, like i'm not trying to initiate
an encounter or at all interested in one, or excited about the whole
situation.

so we file off the bus and i follow amy and emily.  again, i'm acting very
casual as if i'm just "goin' this way, too."  by this time, i apparently
also have along with me my friend's four yr old daughter, robin.  now my
plan is to have the children to assist in the encounter.  the children?
you might be asking yourself...  yes!  amy and emily also had with them a
small boy about two-ish with dark brown hair.  i was hoping the children
would want to play with each other and then i could casually talk to amy
and emily, not necessarily as a loyal fan.

so we follow them a little bit.  then they spread out a blanket and lay
the kid down on it.  we stay right next to them as if we were just
stopping there too.  robin goes over to the little boy and they start to
interact...  then...  then... i'm talking to amy and emily, casually, just
bs-ing, nothing exciting or important, just talking.  i don't remember any
specific topics that were discussed.  but that was the end of the dream.
***

i think this may be a slightly fantastical dream.  i think if i met ig, i
would like it to be casual, so as not to expose my inner ig-obsessed-self.
however, i couldn't imagine not mentioning something...  nor could i
really imagine carrying on a conversation with amy or emily.  not that i
see them as super-human or non-human b/c so many other people know them,
but b/c i really respect them and in comparison to them i'd feel
insignificant in my productiveness...  but, hey, i'm working on it!
anyway, sorry to drag on there.  thanks for reading this far, if anyone
has!  peace, love, and happiness,
                                melissa

so i was looking through the tv listings for this week (i was bored), and
i noticed that "mad about you" tomorrow night is showing an episode
titled "chicken man."

i have no idea what it might be about, only that it gave rise to some
interesting thoughts about what sort of conversations might conceivably
take place between amy & helen hunt. <g>

it's on tomorrow night (tues.), at 8 pm est, on nbc.

cheers,

nothin' like a good, longlost journey lyric to warm the soul. actually, there
is some igc here: i made a deal with my sister....conservo-midwestern-martha-
stewart-wanna-be that she is. the deal is this: i go with her to see journey in
boston this summer (not journey and bostoin, that'd be too much! i'd have to
feather my bangs for that special occasion!). and she has to go with me to at
least one ig show. it's called "payback's a bitch...for susan". bet you're all
green with envy huh?

i admit it, i love steve perry.

you're back to class, your first class, and you're given 12 index cards
lettered a through l and you're told to group them as you see fit.  there
was actually additional info on the cards besides the letters which
pertained to the class, but i'm trying to stay on-topic here.  so i did.
and didn't even think about the obvious.  so we're discussing possible
groupings and the prof asks us to compare the similarities between cards i
and g. but it was on an overhead, so it just looked like ig with no and in
between.  and i think cool! then, she asks us to compare c, g, and i. and
inside my head i automatically think to myself "no it's igc"  well, that's
all.  peace ya'll, melissa

subject:      ig fan club merchandise info (for the newbies)

somebody emailed me asking about ig merchandise and how to get it.  so,
if you don't have the newsletter, i will email you info.  i accidentally
deleted all of my email - i think someone named jan? or something had
asked me about the stuff.  sorry i didn't reply.

while i am posting, i might as well clue you in to what i have been
doing.  i rented boys on the side and have been watching the brief ig
scene--is it just me, or do ya'll wonder how amy does that with her feet
at the beginning, i would probably fall (like mary katherine gallagher,
who i remind my brother of with my new glasses-fresh face!)

anyways, i can't wait to get back to school, so i can read my mail daily
and join the sbmfc, oh yeah, and what does "hiatus" mean (emily includes
it in the newsletter.)

as several others have already pointed out, the differences in chords
comes from one using a capo.  if you look in the song books, they
usually list one set of chords for "guitar" and one for "piano".

this is because pianos don't come with capos, unless you're irving
berlin.  *trivia alert*  *trivia alert*  *many* extra points for anyone

subject:      (fwd) re: the brawl to settle it all

hello, all you list members!  here's another really good post from a
while back that i dug up while i was home for break.  as lorinda
explains before, there had been a thread involving a debate over who
would win an all out fistfight argument - amy or emily.  the final
conclusion was that amy would win.  lorinda's post made me giggle
then, and it still makes me giggle now. :)

i started this post as a private response to the whole "who would win a
fistfight" arguement, but mid-post i realized y'all might get a gigle out
of this one too. the point that was brought up was that emily  may not
win an all out fight, but what do you think she'd do to retaliate against
amy if she lost?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
hmm, you brought up a good point. emily is so devious and clever with her
lyrics. could she be that way in revenge also? hmmm, one wonders...
she might:

* arrange for amy's microphone to broadcast her voice to sound like a
chipmunk. (picture alvin and the chipmunks singing, "welcome meeeeeeee,
to the city of angles!)

* arrange for all of amy's strings to break

* arrange for none of amy's strings to break. (takes away some of the fun
of land of canaan, don't you think?)

* put coffee in amy's tea

* walk off stage mid-son to go to the bathroom, and leave amy to do the
guitar solo.

* tell the audience that amy had just agreed to do a solo set of romeo,
blood and fire, and squeaky, then walk off stage and let the audience
deal with her if she refused.

* glue both of amy's boots to the stage.

* sew up all the holes in amy's clothes

* put the solo from "pushing" into "strange fire" to completely throw her
off.

* secretly embroider "madonna is my hero" on the butt of amy's jeans.

anyone got anymore. this could be fun.

hey, what fun!!!!!!

but next party--i wanna be there, and binky... would you please cut my
hair?????

i'd be much appreciative :)  just a little off the top.  i'm not scared,
i've been bald before... and know what it's like to walk into work with
your head shaved??  well, my co-workers didn't say a word, but busied
themselves at the copy machine.  then my boss came out and screamed with
glee--she was apparently much impressed with my "courage," as she said, but
alas, she wouldn't give me a raise.

one tip though, hair is like a natural insulator, and therefore cutting it
off in the winter season leaves one vulnerable to a <burrr> cold scalp :(

but then as it's growing back, lots-of-folks wanna touch your head--which
is a great way to meet people, especially if you're like me and usually so
very quiet and shy :)

so, binkers, huh?  what'd ya say??  i'm totally fearless of everything
except, umm the thought of yknib with a pair of sissors :))
