i am wondering if anyone has a tape of the first acl,
with mary chapin-carpenter and nancy griffith.
i ask because, this was my first viewing of ig.
and i was completely taken!
my gf thought mary chapin was the hands-down winner in that one,
and would leave my for her, in a heartbeat........but that is another story.
i would love to have a copy of this...
or maybe both on tape now?
can anyone help?
thanks in advance.

i really enjoyed derk's article john, thanks for forwarding it !
of course when people start tracing things back to origins,
there is invariably some one who is left out.... or
the list doesn't go back far enough....
i would argue that womens music owes a great debt to people
like laura nyro who broke the singer songwriter tradition for
women in urban contemporary music, and jazz great betty carter
who started her own label (betcar records) in the 60's in order to
persue her free form style and perform original work ( women were
expected to sing standards back then).
but then one can probably trace it back even farther ...perhaps to
elizabeth cotton.
just thought i'd pipe in :)
btw...betty carter is playing jazz alley july 22-27 in seattle :)

hey all. just wanted to say that after i wrote my
first note about red rocks, i lost all my email (the server flaked out)
and i think i may be bumped off the list. so if you
sent me any comments or questions, please re-send them!
i think the problem may be fixed as of this morning.
ok i discovered something -- front row center is the
only place to be at an ig concert, however it's a crummy
place to boot from. way too much noise. i may try to
edit some of it out and see what i get, but it's not
looking good. gimme a break -- it's my first boot
attempt. and i chickened out of trying to get any video.
i do have set lists for each show that i'll post later.
did anyone else get a good boot of red rocks either night?
in case anyone hasn't posted a rave review of friday night's
show, it was even more up than thursday night. they poured
it on for their last show, with four encores and lots of
old stuff and jams. i caught a glimse of them working on
the set list before the show and tried to catch their attention
but they wouldn't come over. i don't blame them. but at one
point someone claiming to be emily's cousin came up to the
security guard i was talking to and waved her over. they hugged
and looked at baby pictures for a few minutes right where i was
standing. so i was right -- they do have family in colorado.
now it's time to get serious about lilith!
peace & hugs

besides being a great cause, the honor the earth shows have been the only
shows the girls have done in mn in the last couple of years (except for
lilith this year, but with that they're only playing a 45 min. set) :( so,
if ya hear anything, let me know, because last time i heard too late, and

subject: jonas and ezekial question
hiya,
i've always loved the song "jonas and ezekiel", 'cause it's one of the
songs amy sings really cool, and has wild lyrics. i love the "bullet in his
head now he's dead" part. anyway.. it's always driven me insane trying to
figure out who "jonas" is. now, ezekiel makes perfect sense. read ezekiel
ch. 37, it's real cool. he was an old testament prophet who (in vision or
whatever) went to a valley of bones, and by command of god raised them from
the dead. with the bones coming together, then the muscles, etc., and then
god putting breath in its mouth. he also see the resurrection. now, this of
course, fits with the lyrics. but who the heck is jonas? the only mention
of him in the bible (as far as i know) is as the father of simon peter
(simon, the son of jona(s)). so could someone help me with that part? and
then on top of that, i'm pretty much missing the entire idea of the song, so
i'd be happy to hear others interps. of it. thanx!

hi all...
i don't know if anyone knows about or plays rogue market, but this is
what it is: its a stock-market simulation, based on celebrities,
personalities, entertainers, etc. anyway, you can buy/sell/trade
"stock" in your portfolio, etc. it is kinda interesting--it has much
less to loose than the actual stock market, and it is a good way to keep
up with current events/etc.
anyway, point is, they just had the initial public offering for ig
stock--i was pretty excited, to say the least, and bought a bunch of
stocks. just thought that somebody may be interested......

very cool! sorry i missed this. i was just completely worn out saturday.
worked all day on friday and then drove to college station to play a gig
and then drove back home to austin, unloaded equipment and crawled into
bed at about 5:00am (a mere 23 hour day, god i'm getting too old for
this!).
so i missed out on the taping on saturday. bummer
but, not only was i a fool on saturday, apparently i was a fool on
sunday too. my girlfriend just called and told me this little tidbit. on
sunday morning we went to las manitas for breakfast. on the way out we
stopped to say hello to some of her friends. i was wearing my swamp
ophelia t-shirt. her friends kept looking at me weird and smiling. i
couldn't figure out why. now, they tell me it's because amy ray was
sitting right behind me!!! and i didn't even notice! aarrghggh!

hurrah!), vacation in portland for a couple of weeks, and then go to
lilith fair in mn, at which point i shall sign back on and tell everyone
how great dar and the ig were.
okay. if you haven't bought the new dar williams, what the heck are you
waiting for? and if you haven't bought the new, excellent laura love,
do it now. do i recommend it over dar? well...not really...but it's
awesome!
that's it for a while. thanks for all of the great posts, those i've read
and those i haven't, and i'll see you all august 20th! i'll eb wearing a
dar-list t-shirt which says, "as cool as we are" on the front, so perhaps
i'll see some of you there.
love,

>figure out who "jonas" is. now, ezekiel makes perfect sense. read ezekiel
here are the three j&e questions from the faq:
=====
13.2. what is "jonas and ezekial" about?
in the "rites of passage" press kit amy said, "we played dartmouth
college and met some real free thinkers up there. i took a long bike
ride on highway 5, on the border of new hampshire and vermont, and
this song uses references from that and from earlier road trips -
things i heard in conversation, things from the news... it's a
political song about people who put their faith in prophesy, who're
walking toward disaster instead of doing anything about it."
jonas and ezekial are names that amy saw on tombstones in a slave
cemetery. they are possibly also references to the biblical
characters of the same name, although the names are spelt differently
in different translations of the bible.
13.3. who is the "activist with a very short life" mentioned in
"jonas and ezekial"?
amy is referring to bob sheldon, the owner of internationalist books
in chapel hill, north carolina. sheldon was an active anti-war
activist at the time of desert shield and desert storm. he was shot
while alone in his store on february 21, 1991.
13.4. what is emily singing at the end of "jonas and ezekial"?
emily sings, "now i walk in beauty / beauty is before me / beauty is
behind me / above and below me." the words are from a native
american song that is usually sung in a round.

subject: lilith fair article in glamour/melissa ferrick in nyc
mime-version: 1.0
content-type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"
in the august issue of glamour magazine, on p.80, there's a little blurb
about lilith fair. here it is, reprinted w/o permissions, all typos mine:
<<banding together
a new women's music tour rocks
singer-songwriter sarah mclachlan is getting even. "i was bummed last year
when there were no women [performers] at lollapalooza," she says of the
summerlong alt-rock festical's all-male main stage. "i thought it would be
great to organize an all-female festival."
with lilith fair a 35-concert tour making stops in the united states and
canada this summer, mclachlan has done just that.
named for the mythical first woman (whom adam left for eve), lilith fair,
which began july 5 in washington state, will play cities including atlanta,
toronto, boston, los angeles and houston by the summer's end. (check out
www.lilithfair.com for specific tour dates.)
with lollapalooza planners booking no female headliners again this year
(spokesperson lisa vega insists the inclusion is "not intentional"),
lilith's talent roster is the best revenge: some of the indistry's biggest
names--sheryl crow, jewel, the cardigans--as well as established
songstresses tracy chapman and mary chapin carpenter will headline the
event.
just as the first wives' club's box office made hollywood notice its female
audience, lilith fair may shake up the music biz. the styles of its stars
may vary dramatically, but these women plan to jam together. says emily
saliers of the indigo girls (shaming of the sun, epic), "we like sharing
music with other players."
what? no catfights? folkrocker shawn colvin (a few small repairs,
columbia) says the media pushes competition: "they have a beauty pagent
mentality about female artists--someone has to 'rule,'" colvin says. "i
hope [the tour] will prove there's no need to compete because of one's
gender."
-bari nan cohen>>
what? ig aren't some of industry's biggests names or well established
songstresses? hmmmm...
anyway, i am probably going to see melissa ferrick at the fez in nyc on
august 1...is anyone else going & want to try to meet up?
i also wanted to recommend dar williams' new album, end of the summer, &
sarah mclachlan's new album, surfacing. both are amazing!

just a little side note. i'm suprised i didn't hear this before..but the
original strangefire on indigo records had two releases. the first release
seems to be more common..all colored vinyl copies were first release. the
second release actually has 'second edition' on the label on the vinyl. so
you can check yours to see! i think the second printing was on a higher
quality vinyl as well.
my sealed e.p. has 'first pressing' written on the label so perhaps there
is a second pressing of the e.p. as well...who knows!

_________________________________________
the canyons-the resort formerly known as wolf mountain served as a
wonderful backdrop for the sweet soprano andhsuky alto harmonies of amy
ray and emily slaiers, better known as the indigo girls, wednesday
night.
under warm, cloudy skies that threatened but didn't produce rain, the
singers offered a liberal dose of their politically charged, acousitc
guitar-driven folk.
backed by drummer jerry marotta, bassist sara lee
andmulti-intrumentalist josh siegel, the pair pulled material from their
albums "rites of passage," "swamp ophelia," theif latest release "shamin
of the sun" and more.
though known primarily for their harmonizing skills, the indigo girls
showed that they are much more.
ray and saliers shared guitar duties and each dabbled in other
instruments throughout the show.
"it's alright," a song with a powerful message about discrimination,
was straight ahead lyrically and musically. saliers effectively used
this song to unveil her talents on slide guitar.
ray's most powerful insturment is her voice, and she used it to convey
the message of lost love during "don't give that girl a gun." ray penned
the song and her heartfelt delivery andpain-tinged phrasing made it
obvious to the capacity crowd the turmoil and emotion she was
experiencing when she wrote it.
lighter fare also had its palce during the performance.
"shame on you" featured saliers on banjo and ray on a beautiful
black-topped fender strotocaster, which suffered a broken low e string
duringone of ray's poundings. the song was a big hit with the crowd,
who sang along during every song, but particularly loudly on that one.
siegel, marotta and lee showed excellent musicianship thoughout the
show. siegel shined during several songs, especially when the
multifaceted musician used a violin, mandolin or saxophone to add jus
the right element or texture.
ray and saliers didn't ignore older materials, with "what separates me
from you," "i'm lonely tonight," "get out the map" and many more during
the 90-minute set.
at onepoint, the band launched into a comver version of the reggae
anthem "redemption song," and used neil young's "down by the rinver" as
an effective segue during "cut it out."
a well-deserved encore featured opening act david wilcox on backup
vocals during a wonderful rendition of "love's recovery." judging by his
body language and his smile, he enjoyed himself as much as the crowd
enjoyed his performance.
wilcox palyed a 45-minute set that teatured his hits "rusty old
american dream" and "eye of the hurricane."
wilcox is a gifted singer and songwriter whose talents are just
beginning to be recognized by mainstream audiences. unfortunately, the
fans at the the canyons failed to extend even the most common courtesy
to him.
the behavior of many fans, who used his set as a time to stand around,
talk and yell to friends in other sections, was downright inhospitable
and disrespectful. for those who listened, wilcox's performance and
narrative between songs were worthwhile.

hey,
thanks a lot to all the people who informed me of the names coming from the
gravestones. i thought maybe ezekiel was a bible reference 'cause he talked
about ressurection, "i'm not ready for the dead to show it's face". and then
the line "prophets in the graveyard". could it be that seeing those
gravestones reminded her of those biblical prophets? was amy the one with
the priest father or whatever? oh, and also, in the linear notes on the
second choruse it says "whose turn is it anyway", but doesn't she sing "whose
angel are you anyway"? oh, and on the line "in the war over land where the
world began, prophecy says it's where the world will end", another prophecy
of ezekiel, and the bible, that the final "battle" will be in israel. even
if i am way off on all this stuff (not having an exp. of "jonah" doesn't
help, unless it is just another spelling of jonas, guy trying to avoid
service, can't make that fit in), i'm still interested in other peoples ideas
of what the song is really about. thanks.

i think that's why we love 'em. don't you? when i hear em singing

"this train" is, for the most part, not done in first person, it still feels

i haven't given this much thought either but i was just thinking that it's
very unlikely there are amy songs not in the 1st person. even if they
were originally written that way, once they go live, seems like amy tacks
onthe phrase "i said" to practically everything anyway. :)

i attended two of the three recent ferron shows in berkeley and met a

for any ig-listers living near sacramento, ferron and her three-piece
band (with the amazing jami sieber on electric cello) will be playing
tonight (wednesday) at the palms playhouse in davis (west of sacramento).
for those attending the san diego pride fest this w/e, ferron and her

just a reminder to y'all that indigo girls entered the roguemarket this
morning... at last check ( a few minutes ago) they were not rising very
fast and, in fact, both cheap trick and maryln manson (who both entered
today for the first time as well) had gained more than ig had.
quickie description of the roguemarket: you register and they give you
10,000 to start playing with and buy shares. (an extra 5,000 if you agree
to fill out another form asking the usual marketing stuff). what you do is
buy "shares" of celebrities - musicians, race car drivers, politicians,
etc. their "shares" then rise and fall based upon how many shares in the
market are bought and sold - buy low, sell high is the plan, and you can
gain or lose "$" (not real money of course) depending on you ability to
predict market behavior (i lost big thinking jodie foster would go way up
with the success of contact) and with luck. in my current "portfolio", for
example, i have "shares" of ig (of course), melissa etheridge, bill gates
(i'm no fool), rosie o' donnell, gillian anderson, etc. it is a lot of fun
and gives a rather different perspective on being famous...
www.roguemarket.com good luck and buy ig!!! :-)
tracy
ps : i almost forgot, after you have earned enough shares you can choose to
cash them in for various "awards" like roguemarket hats and shirts and
stuff. dang if *i* am parting with my hard earned shares though!! lololol

hey list~
first of "are you out there?" i've only received about 3 messages today...hmm...
but wait! no need to jump to flame me for an "is the list down?" post,
because i actually have list content to mention too:
i had a great time at the "y'all" chat with michelle malone this evening,
and it was especially nice to see the ig list so well represented. it was
great "chatting" with people from the list who were there. (i was using the
screen-name 'righteousbabe') anyway, i spent a little additional time
chatting on y'all, and found it to be a pretty nice atmosphere. their
chatrooms are set up basically like aol's, with the distinct difference of
being completely uncrowded, and almost empty quite often. so, it got me
thinking that it would probably be pretty easy, and maybe kind of fun, to
arrange a time and date to have an informal list chat organized there. i
know that an ig irc channel existed, but is usually empty, and i also know
that many people are unable to access dal-net. so...i just thought i'd bring
up the idea, and see if there are enough people with web access who would be
interested in something of the kind.
so, whaddaya'll think? here's the url for y'all, so check it out!

hi list!
this is my first post, so i hope i've done it right. recently saw ig in
dallas (front row center - it was amazing and inspiring) and i think i heard
lyrics to chickenman that i didn't recognize. something about soldiers
marching. anybody know what those alternate lyrics are and where they came
from? all of a sudden, the song had a new, extremely powerful meaning.
also, i'd love to find a copy of reverse 1- live. any ideas?
thanks and peace,
pam

someone of you wonderful people will take pity on my naked little case and
pick me up some stickers -of the girls, or from lilith, or anything
interesting. i'll send $$$ or the requisite firstborn of my children. or
even boots, though i don't have tons. thanks lots in advance!

thanks for coming out and playing the game <name that tune off of one

no, but on a serious note... i thought the same exact thing (similar happy,
upbeat songs)...after reading "what separates me" - i figured "i'm
lonely tonight" sounds sort of like the same song. (only for a brief
nano-second of course!)
tigger, the high priestess <bow>, i was roflol too, btw. (don't get
mad - but your mistake made me laugh (see just above for specifics)).
(or was it on purpose - je ne sais pas)...hmmmmmmm
but it's funny how people guess what the name of the song is... i
remember (nigc) before pearl jam's versus album came out...i called
"leash" - "drop the leash (or leaves i think)" cause that's a repeating line
in the song...
ok.........a question if you may so indulge me or the list.......
????????????????????????????????????????????????????
i'm making a mix of ig songs from all their albums including two live ones,

what's a good / can't miss driving song(s) ?????

mime-version: 1.0
content-type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"
hey y'all! just found this on reuters. i don't think it's been posted. if
so, sorry :)
jendy
teen report-indigo girls 'calling the shots' and loving it
music news by merritt mcalister, 17 years old
stone mountain, georgia (reuter) - for the past 16 years, amy ray and emily
saliers,
better known as the indigo girls, have been playing music together.
their music's unique blending of folk and rock has created a large, mostly
female following, drawn to
ray and saliers' music and political and social messages.
"creatively, we've just always done our thing," saliers said in a recent
telephone interview.
"we've made the albums we want to make. we call the shots," she said.
saliers said that despite the competitiveness of the music industry and what
one hears about how
hard it is to break into the industry, the sacrifices for her have been few
and the rewards many.
saliers said she loves what she does and famous or not she would still be
making music, the same
kind of music she and ray make.
with a good relationship with their manager and record company (epic), the
indigo girls have been
able to focus on making powerful and emotional records, saliers said.
they have been able to avoid being consumed with the commercialization
present in much of the
music industry, she said.
on their most recent album, "shaming of the sun", released this spring,
their creative freedom
exploded in a new way.
for the first time, ray and saliers co-produced their own record with
engineer david leonard.
"it took a lot more energy and work, but i think that it was the most
gratifying record we've made,"
saliers said.
on the album ray and saliers delve into more instrumentation, expanding
their traditional acoustic
guitar sound to encompass a banjo, electric guitar, mandolin and dulcimer,
among others.
"in the end it was just a very freeing experience," saliers said.
the indigo girls are currently touring, promoting the already double
platinum "shaming of the sun."
beginning in august, the indigo girls join lilith fair, a collective summer
concert event organized by
canadian singer/songwriter sarah mclachlan and made up of all female
performers, including
shawn colvin, jewel and mary chapin carpenter.
"i am excited about playing lilith fair," saliers said.
"it's great to have a bunch of women playing music together and we're big
fans of sarah mclachlan
and glad she put this together," saliers said.
following lilith fair, saliers said the indigo girls won't slow down.
in september there are plans for a second honor the earth tour, this time
focusing on east coast
environmental issues, saliers said.
the indigo girls 1995 honor the earth tour promoted the rights of indigenous
peoples.
for october, efforts are being made to organize a tour just for high school
students, saliers said.
"it's been a little difficult putting it together logistically," she noted.
if all goes as planned, the indigo girls should be touring high schools for
a month, then go back to
playing clubs and theaters before heading off to australia in january,
saliers said.
there are also some surprise plans in the works for spring that the duo is
keeping under wraps.
"it's something really fun," saliers said somewhat mischievously, keeping
the surprise a secret.
to keep a watchful eye on what this surprise might be and for other updated
indigo girls tour
information, check out the band's web site
(http://www.epiccenter.com/epiccenter/indigogirls).

hi folks!
it's been a while. i hope all is well in ig-land! :)
i'm not currently on the list, but was wondering if anyone had lilith
fair tickets (to the nashville show) that they wanted to sell. i need:
a) one ticket (*not* on the lawn)
or, preferably,
b) two tickets together (*not* on the lawn)
i have a ticket... but, now, one of my friends wants to go and we'd like
to sit together if possible. so, here comes another option:
c) i could trade my $53 ticket for two $26 ones... (if someone had two
tickets, but one person backed out or whatever... hey, it's possible!
then, you could get a seat upgrade :)
if anyone can help me out, or knows someone who can, please email me.
i'll be the one with my fingers crossed. btw, sorry for the low-ig
content (they are playing the nashville show though) ;)
thanks!

oh, c'mon. if they *really* wanted to make it challenging
the clue would have just been:
91) yeah
ha! all us ig fans would have got it instantly.

for friday's show at jones beach. i know it's kind of last minute, but
here they are. i have three (3) tickets, and i'd like an even $50 for
each ($5 less than the ticketmaster price after service charges and all
their other bullshit). the seats:
orchestra c: w5, w6, v6
so two of them are next to each other and the other is right in
front/back (dunno which) of them.
i'm located in manhattan and i'd like to get rid of these tonight if
possible, so please call me now if you want them! no flakers! serious
buyers only! :) don't call after midnight, of course. (212)
222-2872. or you can try me at work tomorrow at (212) 833-8903. ask
for ed.

whoohoo! i guess it wasn't just a rumour then! alright! :)
now, let's get down to business. i'm planning on getting to
as many shows as i can, excluding maybe perth (the flight's
so damn expensive). so that's sydney, canberra, melbourne,
adelaide and brisbane. hell, maybe even nz - it's closer
than perth. who's interested in roadtripping, or even just
providing floorspace for roadtrippers to crash? we can get
our own little ig tour going. :)

subject: self-titlled ig lp; caroline aiken; red letter day
hey y'all,
<ig lp>
i miraculously found a self-titled ig lp
(one of those black vinyl round things
that look like large cds, but not as shiny)
in a used cd/record store in iowa city. my eyes
bugged out. now, i know that this record
is not nearly as rare as shades of indigo,
etc., but what i'd like to know is....how much
is one of these things worth? of course, to
me, although i can't play it (no black vinyl
round thingy player), it is quite priceless.
but i paid a mere $6 for it. it was opened
but hasn't a scratch on it. it does have one
dinged corner on the cover though. i wonder
if i can be so lucky to get it signed at one of
the lilith fairs i am going to....that would top
it off!
<caroline aiken>
hey, i am a total, absolute, bar nothing
caroline aiken convert!! why, oh why, did i wait
so long to hear this great woman? i just got
her live at the attic and live bait cds from
ladyslipper (in a very speedy five days) and i
just can't put 'em down. she's quite a guitarist
and has a beautiful, natural, very strong voice.
it would be heaven to catch her in concert.
anyway, i just got back on the list after a long
hiatus and wonder if anyone has posted a
review of caroline's new cd, "butler field". would
someone critique this cd for me? i haven't
heard it yet; i just ordered it from silverwolf
records since no record store in eastern iowa
has heard of her. can't wait to get it! all those
people out there who haven't heard ca yet....
trust me, her cds are very wise buys. plus,
live at the attic has ca singing with ig on
white house blues...very good!!!
<red letter day>
i also got red letter day's "four bowls of colour" cd
along with my ca cds. thanks to don for giving
me and the list a heads-up on this! ladyslipper
says in their catalog that red letter day reminds
them of ig's harmonies, good lyrics, etc. so, i
figured i'd try it. they are very catchy!!! not as
good as ig (of course), but after only one listen
to the cd, i can't put that one down either. i'd
highly recommend them if you're looking for some
catchy new music. now, i don't know who is who
of the female duo (reminds me of the thread "which one is
amy and which one is emily?"), but the lead singer
on many of the songs has a raspy voice that reminded
me of amy when i first heard it. you can make the call.
lisa
(i've got my first ever nickname!!!!....uh, besides those
i don't want to hear that are said behind my back......
it's "mario" of the andretti fame. supposedly, i drive
like shit. go on a few road-trips with people and
your entire reputation gets blown!! sheesh!)

ok, so...i don't usually post, but this one is worth it! i'm working at
a day camp this summer and i've worn my shaming of the sun hat a few
times, walked around humming various ig songs and performed closer to
fine with my guitar and a few friends. basically, almost everyone knows
that i love ig. at the beginning of the summer, my co-counselor, a very
17 y/o high school boy, made it known that he in fact hated ig. as the
summer has gone on he has become less adamant in his hatred. this
culminated tuesday when he finally broke down and asked to borrow sots!
he came in today and proclaimed that he liked the whole cd! so...do i
get a toaster oven!??
all my love,

count me in for floor space in brisbane... and probably for the the

subject: ig & sports; dar, again.
hey, mario here for another post.....and then i've
gotta get twink her private correspondence, finally!
i was "a'wandering out on the hills of iowa..." (a dar
reference, which, to me, means i was taking a walk
down the streets of cedar rapids) tonight...a good
way to clear my head for better thoughts....what else
but ig (it figures with their music blaring in my head).
anyway...so i was thinking about ig and sports. with
all the touring ig does and fast food they eat, we know
they partake in physical activity...outside of their riotous
concerts! :) amy and emily admit going biking in the
cities they play in. btw, has anyone run into them on
a bike trail? i mean, what the heck would you do/say
if you were biking along and looked up in time to see
amy and emily biking past you the opposite way...or
what if you caught up to them going the same way and
then noticed it was them?...."passing on your left!!!!"....<omigod,
it's amy and emily!> "...er, i mean, riding right along side of you
for miles and miles and making you wish you took a more
isolated path!......" i am a fairly new fan....since 1200 curfews,
and i've spent an even smaller amount of time on this list,
so i don't remember hearing if amy and em played or play
certain sports on a regular basis. does anyone know?
i don't know if anyone mentioned this in reviews of the
fraze, kettering, oh concert, but.....some people at the
concert said they were hanging out before the concert to
catch the sound check, and saw amy and jerry throwing the
softball around in a grassy, fan-accessible area outside
of the venue, watched 'em, and then got autographs.
i feel like i missed the event of a lifetime. well,
i was at the list meeting at the time, so i had a good
alternative there. :) i love softball and would have given
a heck of a lot to play catch with amy. "hi, amy...no, i don't
want your autograph, but can i play catch with you....just
this once...pleeeeease?!"
with all the posting about dar that's been going on (on the
ig list!), i've gotta add another one. for all you gonna-be
dar fans out there, don't run right out and get dar's new cd,
"end of the summer". i don't know what everyone else thinks,
but i'd recommend first getting dar's two previous cds, "honesty
room" and "mortal city". i mean, if you were trying to turn someone
on to ig, would you give them sots as their first cd? no, probably
not. like ig and ani, dar's gotten a little riskier/rockier with her
new cd, i think. you've gotta hear the folkier side of dar before you
graduate to
"end of the summer". but, unlike ig and ani, dar's cds have been around
for just three years......she's too new to change so much. "honesty
room" is
a '95 release, "mortal city" came out in '96, and now there's "end of the
summer" in '97. how's that for hard work? when she said "i think i'll
make
a go of it......" (i imagine she said this to herself sometime along the
way),
she wasn't kiddin'! anyway, dar's new cd is great, but don't forget her
previous two releases. they are must-haves!

i doubt they eat lots of fast food on the road. on show days, their food is
catered (unless it's a club show, then they may get a "buy-out" which is
money for meals). artists can request specific meals or specific kinds of
meals (ie: low fat, vegen, etc). catering usually has plenty of vegetables,
fruits and stuff with lots of protein.

hey, y'all!
i'm a brand-spankin' newbie to the list of love-n-funk. so . . . hi! may
you all be blessed in the name of emily's banjo strings.
so, like, i've been a fan for years but have never gotten in on this
bootleg thing. eeek! well, "they say that it's never too late, but you
don't get any younger"--so i reckon i oughta start now! obviously, i have
no boots to trade, but if some really really nice person would wanna help
me out, i can offer blank tapes and postage. (or if that doesn't seem
kosher, let me know what else would work!) i'd like to get the really old
stuff first--"tuesday's children," "blue food," and "live at the purple
parrot." (i'd also welcome suggestions of other coolie boots, those of you
omniscient indi-booters!)
many thanks in advance!!
peace in amy's mystery tattoo,

subject: wall of sound online ig biography
when i was cruising the web today i found a biograghy of a&e on wall of
sound. some of the content irritated me and i let them know it.
editors:
i must take exception to one line in your online biography of the indigo
girls:" their need to express their sexual preferences outweighed their
musical good sense." since this comment is left unexplained as to exactly how
saliers' & rays' "coming out" has compromised the music on rites of passage,
this line feels like a bit of gratuitous homophobia. if you are referring to
amy rays' cover of "romeo & juliet," that's a bit of a stretch, since ray did
not change the pronouns or names in the song. she is clearly just covering
the dire straits song, which happens to be sung from the male perspective.
indigo girls also cover dylan's "tangled up in blue," the lyrics of which are
clearly also the perspective of a man, and by your logic this would also be
"a sexual identity song." how about that they wanted to cover these songs?
you don't like the cover, fine. but what does being a lesbian have to do with
"romeo & juliet?"
as any serious indigo girls fan will tell you, rites of passage is not the cd
where saliers & ray begin to address their personal issues of sexual
identity. try swamp ophelia for starters, and the issue is not even fully
addressed until shaming of the sun (it's allright"), a full five years after
the release of rites of passage.

hello ig listers!
i am in the process of updating the pacific northwest ig sub list. i
have been getting many "returned mails" because of failure to locate
email addresses. probably a lot of people out of school losing email
accounts - but, if anyone out there wants to be deleted or added to the
pnw sub list, please let me know. i will be updating our list for the
next post.
please send me mail either way so i can be sure to have the most current
addys for everyone who wants to stay on the sub list. any ideas,
opinions or suggestions are always welcomed. :o)
you don't have to be from the pnw to be on the list if you are just
interested in the area or come for vacation and want to meet up with ig
listers. we have many "honorary" members!!! all are welcome!
thank you and have a great weekend!

mime-version: 1.0
content-type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

hey y'all,
i'll leave the details of the trip out (but there will eventually be a
post about it- there was way too much igc not to post, my mom even got
into finding igc in things, weird).
on friday audrey, my mom, and i all headed down to denver to try and
find the perfect gift for emily. we started off at the tattered cover
bookstore (big place, about five stories). audrey had talked about a
book "shooting back from the reservation" which supports a project
called shooting back. the basic concept is that they give youth cameras
and teach them about photography and then turn the pictures into a book
and the book supports the project, so it's all really cool (audrey can
probably explain it a lot better than i can). it gives you a different
perspective on things, very cool. anywho, it took audrey about 2.3
seconds to find the book when we got into the photography section, so i
think that it was fate. we got the book and started scanning around the
bookstore some more. audrey found a book "the writer's desk" that has
pictures of different writers (toni morrison and kurt vonnegut as well
as many, many others were in it) at their desks (or writing space).
beside the picture of them is a little bit by the writer about their
style and how they like to write and when. we decided to hold on to the
idea of the book and look around denver some more. we spent about three
hours walking around and looking in all the nifty stores, but we just
couldn't find the right thing. although, i did make friends with a cute
little cat named lucy in one of the stores. she was sweet. the lady
that worked at the store had to take her off of me cause she wouldn't
get off of my shoulder. back to the point, we decided to go back to the
bookstore and get "the writer's desk" and send the remainder of the
tangible gift money to billings house (there is a $35 check on its way
up to deb right now).
friday night at the concert we brought along the gift (check, cards,
books, etc.) in a bag so that we could easily hand it over to sully
after the concert. when we went down to the stage it was obvious that
sully was way too busy to give the gift to. so audrey and i went down
to where the backstage entrance was and told our story to a nice
security guard. she sent us back up the hill to go talk to the
production manager. i told him the story and he radioed for dave
ellison, the tour manager (some of you may know him as the harmonica
player during chickenman, the one with the long hair and glasses).
after we waited for five or ten minutes, dave came out. i told him what
the gift was and said that we just wanted to make sure that it was
passed on to emily. he said that he would definitely see that emily got
the present. and seeing as he is with them almost all of the time, i'm
sure she did. he looked pretty enthusiastic about it too. i just think
that it is really cool that after the last show of the tour emily could
end the night with a birthday present like that!!
thanks to everybody who helped with both birthday presents!!! i still
can't believe the whole thing. in total we raised over $5000!!!!!
($2500 for amy's birthday and honor the earth and $2650 for emily's
birthday and the billings house). y'all are amazing!!!!!
i just want to send a huge thank you out to greta, tony, deb, audrey,
everyone who helped us, those of you who donated, and,of course, amy and
emily.
peace,
mandi

ahh but my grande dame of ynkibness, how does that theory fit in with ani
defranco (just entered rogumarket last week) being at nearly $15 now (all
new shares open at 10), tori amos (on for awhile i beleive) being at $74,

hello everyone!
for those of you were as fortunate as i to see michelle and *friends* at
eddie's attic - i would love to see if one of you know the answer to this
question.
what is the name of the song that amy sang when she first got on the stage???
i've been listening to the lyrics, and i can't really figure out the title.
and i've never heard that before. who wrote it??! is that a song by
michelle, or someone else? that was a totally amazing song!!!!!!! as amy
said "yee haw" =)
the sigc part - one of the guests at michelle's cd release party at eddie's
last night was none other than amy. she came out during the third set, and
played the above unknown song, and later on played on wild horses, and down
by the river.
other guests included: michael lorant, sheila doyle, kristen hall, sonja
rutstein, chris mcguire, and michelle's family - whom are all as talented as
she is. and tons of other atlanta artists, whose names all escape me at the
moment.
michelle was totally amazing. i **highly** recommend seeing her if you ever
get the chance. and if anyone in atlanta is interested, she is doing an
instore performance tomorrow at wuxtry records in decatur. i know she'd
definitely appreciate a large crowd =)
also, if anyone has the set lists from last night (any or all of the three
shows) i'd love to see them!! i'd really appreciate titles =)
thanks!
=)

subject: ig in acoustic guitar mag
hey y'all,
i got some responses from a few of you kind friends
concerning when the acoustic guitar mag issue with
ig would be available. thanks for responding! before
i could get home to read my e-mail, i stopped at
barnes & noble bookstore and found several of the
september issues with ig on the cover! great surprise!
i wasn't aware that mags. are so pre-dated. it isn't even
august yet. i was fortuntate to have thought of
checking tonight. if anyone needs a copy of the mag
and can't get it where you live, i will be happy to go
back to barnes & noble this weekend to pick up some
more copies. they are $5 each plus postage. e-mail me
privately if you're interested. i won't get any more copies
until i get confirmation from whoever wants one.
about the article.....it's great!....different from the usual
question and answer sessions. this one is very
technical. it talks about tuning of guitars, all the instruments
used in producing the albums, types of guitars, etc. it
was nice to hear amy and emily talk in technical terms.
it is easy to take their "effortless" guitar playing for granted.
by reading this article, i just realized what work goes
into writing and producing their songs. i have even more
respect for them now, especially since i don't play any
instruments but would like to learn someday soon.

hi,
from 1991 till 1995 i have been collecting ig tapes of concerts and
interviews. i stopped about two years ago. not because i didn't like the
indigo girls anymore...no! i love the indigo girls (on my radio show i keep
calling them the best band of this century!)......i just didn't have time
anymore to trade and collect. anyway, i have made my own selection of the
stuff i want to keep and have about 60 tapes (1986 - 1994) available that i
want to trade for copies of xena episodes (season 1 and 2, not sky2
broadcasts, they cut scenes). i also have two videos to trade: live at the
uptown lounge and jesus christ superstar a resurrection (both ntsc).
i can not copy stuff and the xena episodes are the only thing i will trade for.
anyone who is interested please e-mail me at rockrose@worldaccess.nl (i have
a list available).
peace,

subject: sudden insight...... (long)
i was just reading the opening page to the listory section of audrey beth
stein's color me indigo web page. and i read the whole long thing that was
audrey's reaction to reading posts from the archives.
-snip- "i felt awkward and stopped reading pretty quickly.........it felt
like i'd come across someone's journal or something." -snip-
now, i ask you to correlate that with the following lyrics from sots: "i am
sorry that i set my sights on the things i read, something meant for your
husband maybe, you left it under the bed."
in light of this development, i have decided to usurp anna's territory a
little bit, in light of the fact that i haven't seen one of these on her
chartreuse girls page yet, and write <gasp> a parody!!!!!! :) so here goes:
burn all the archives.
i am sorry that i set my sights on the things i read.
something meant for other listees maybe,
you left it out on the web.
once upon a bandwidth those words flew free and secret
but the pages are kept now,
drifted to the hands of the listowner,
and the greedy newbies on down!
(chorus)
burn all the archives (someone is always reading)
newbies out on the web (whether openly or secretly)
burn all the archives (now breathe life into your listory)
i said burn it to secrecy.
burn all the archives, brand them in you before you go
newbies coming to plunder, but there are some things they will never know.
we made our list out of dignity
dug our nails in the 'net
hung our web-soaked souls out on the digest
real love so hard that it hurt
to ease my pain i took a post, keyboard,
incarnate came the email,
delete it now before the mailserver
perverts it in recieving.
(chorus)
there it is! hope y'all liked that :) and if you didn't well, blame it on
my warped sense of humor.

hi --last i heard there was a discrepancy regarding the date of the ig

well for those interested i have more info :)
ig will be appearing at borders books on michigan ave in downtown chicago
on saturday, august 9th, 1997 at 3:30pm (sorry deb!). this is not a
performance. it is only a signing appearance. i anticipate it being
waaaaay crowded there because when i called borders this evening the
recording said--if you want info on the ig appearnce press 7, all other
inquiries press 1. i suppose they've received just a few calls :). now
that is the same day they are appearing at the world theater for lilith.
the world is like 30-40 minutes from downtown. i am just gonna haffta miss
poor emmy lou harris and maybe even lisa loeb to get to this signing.
anyway that is all the info that i have. anyone gonna be there? take care

1. red rocks is beautiful. amy, emily, michelle, and patti smith making
music at red rocks is something i wish everyone could experience once in
their lives. and it was wonderful to have a dream come true and be even
better in the reality.
2. mandi, deb, mandi's mom, and all the listees who contributed to
emily's birthday gift rock my world. i am so proud to be a part of a
group that can pull together and trust each other and take action to
support something important and give back to someone who's given us so
much.
3. one of the books we gave emily for her birthday is called "shooting
back from the reservation: a photographic view of life by native american
youth" and is the second in a project which began with "shooting back: a
photographic view of life by homeless children." from the inside cover
of the first book: "in the early 1980s, while staff photographer for upi
in washington, d.c., jim hubbard began documenting the lives of the
homeless. over time, he found that whenever he took pictures of the
families the children wanted to hold and look through his camera. it was
this innocent curiosity and enthusiasm that inspired hubbard to establish
a program that would enable the homeless children to learn photographic
skills and document their world. the subsequent education and media
center was called shooting back, inc., a name coined from a spontaneous
comment by one of the young participants in the program: when asked why
he was photographing his own world, the homeless child responded, "i'm
shooting back." both revealing and emotionally stirring, the poignant,
black-and-white photographs taken by these children provide a compelling
look into a bleak yet hope-filled existence." the second book describes
shooting back as "an organization dedicated to empowering children at
risk by teaching them photography." profits from the books support the
project, and you should be able to find them in any good bookstore.

subject: another interview
mime-version: 1.0
content-type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii
hi everyone,
this appeared in the west australian (perth's newspaper) on friday
july 25. there was even a little pic of the girls on the front page
(saying turn to page such-and-such for the 'today' liftout)...
women take charge
[the indigo girls are back on the road as part of an all-female
touring festival. michael dwyer catches up with amy ray and finds
out about the duo's new album, shaming of the sun.]
women have taken over the lollapalooza asylum. in the us, lilith
fair is enjoying its third week of capacity crowds in venues of
9000 to 35000, from washington state to florida.
the brainchild of folk-pop artist sarah mclachlan, lilith fair is
another rock'n'roll summer roadshow with one vital distinction:
there's barely a y-chromosome among the total of 53 acts.
the two-month, 35-city rotating bill inclued tracy bonham, the
cardigans, emmylou harris, sheryl crow, tracy chapman, shawn colvin,
lisa loeb, susannah hoffs, jill sobule, juliana hatfield, suzanne
vega, victoria williams, mary-chapin carpenter and loads more.
as live drawcards for 10 years and new parents of a fifth smash
album, shaming of the sun, the indigo girls are getting a rapturous
reception on the lilith fair tour. "everybody in america is saying,
'wow, women in music!' like suddenly there's been this big explosion,
but we've been doing it for so long," says amy ray (the dark-haired,
hard rockin' one) as she and emily saliers prepare for a casual couple
of dates with new york punk legend patti smith.
"the people who really pioneered music for us are not the ones who
are around now. they're people like billie holliday and etta james,
those women who really had to sacrifice and suffer for their art.
"but i think sarah mclauchlan is cool to have done this because a lot
of the travelling shows just don't involve women. so i think it's a
great step towards women being a legitimate part of the music scene
rather than just some kind of trend." anybody who caught the indigo
girls' first australian performance at the perth concert hall in 1995
would know their intimate style of confessional folk-rock transcended
trend years ago. ray says even she and saliers were bolwed over by
the emotional pitch of the audience's response: not hysteria, more
like ecstasy.
a scan of web sites devoted to the indigo girls shows a similar
fanaticism. like the perth turn-out, the punters are overwhelmingly
female and thir loyalty borders on obsession. the reasons run far
deeper than the indigo girls' lesbian icon status. their songs offer
a level of communication largely alien to male-dominated rock
frequencies. "i think our following has evolved into something that's
much more mixed but when we go somewhere new, women are usually the
first ones to support us and we appreciate it," ray says. "they feel
a connection or maybe just more comfortable.
"i'm a fan of other people's music so i always remind myself how it
feels when i listen to somebody else. i don't know what they mean but
i interpret it myself and it brings something to my life. that's what
i hope our music does for people."
shaming of the sun finds the indigo girls exploring a new musical
vocabulary via the bazouki, sitar, banjo, mandolin, dulcimer and the
occasional string section besides their usual mix of acoustic and
electric guitars. their themes of understanding, self-knowledge and
human rights remain while a long list of contact numbers on the cd
sleeve - women's action, handgun control, honor the earth campaign,
parents and friends of lesbians and gays - offers a direct statement
of intent.
"we're activists in our daily lives," ray explains. "and we use our
position as musicians to get across sometimes but there's a time and
place for everything. some of the songs may be political and we may
do a spoken word piece in the middle if it's appropriate but we're
not going to stand up there and give speeches."
unless they're doing one of their frequent benefit concerts. among
their numerous commitments in that regard, ray and saliers set aside
a month of every touring season to work for native american groups
defending their land and culture.
"we make a lot of money," she says. "it's not that much of a sacrifice
to do a month of benefit work. to us it's important. part of the reason
why we're doing this is to be able to give something back."
the indigo girls plan to make their second visit to australia early
next year.
(there's also a short article about lilith and sarah mclachlan's
efforts and reasons behind it, if anyone's interested, email me.
david)

wow! didn't know so many of you watched xena. that's great.
posted my message yesterday and already got so many responses. you all have
been asking the same questions. so here's some additional info: i live in
the netherlands and i am still looking for all the 46 episodes broadcasted
in the usa. sky2 is an english station and like i mentioned before they cut
scenes!

hi
just a clarification, the cd is being given away by hidden water, which is
the host site for the lifeblood archive, and the offer is legit.
the cd is really good, any ellen james society fans out there should check
it out (chris mcguire was in ejs with cooper seay). it is a shame that
mary fortune express broke up, especially when they had just finished a new
cd. julie is just trying to get it out where people can listen to it.
have a good day

thanks to everyone for their response. it's audio tapes (quality: from very
bad to almost very good) i am talking about (there was some confusion). it
will be too complicated to trade with more than a few people, so i am really
looking for people who can trade at least for a quarter of xena episodes
(both seasons).
i also have for trade the lp's (vinyl) closer to fine and strange fire (epic
version), the promo "three hits" with 4 live tracks and several other
(promo) cd-singles, the shades of indigo cd (the orange one).

subject: ig more popular than mozart?
mime-version: 1.0
content-type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii
hey y'all,
here's a post telling of a cute happening last week while visiting a
friend in johnstown, pa. *delete now* if you're looking for ig content
outside of *my* immediate world.
me and my friends were outside reading my friend's housemate's car's
bumberstickers. note: between these friends there is a healthy share of
facial piercings, tattoos, and bleached/dyed hair.
so along comes a thirteen year old boy, who strolls up to my friends and i
and asks, "are you guys.... punk rockers?" so, me and two of my friends
respond, "uh... sometimes." he asked us if we thought we were cool and
responded likewise. then the boy asks, "do you like marilyn manson?" our
responses varied. another kid who was with the inquisitive boy supplied
us with the information that "he likes marilyn manson." the first boy
continued to ask us if we liked certain performers. then, my partner
decided she would ask him if he liked performers we liked. she asked him
if he liked indigo girls. note: i was wearing my sots shirt that day.
his reply was, "yuck, nooooooooo, they're *lesbians*!" my friends and i
pretended we were shocked. he justified his claim with, "i saw it on mtv
news... i, i, read it in a magazine." one of my friends then said, "i
heard marilyn manson was gay." the boy replied, "nuh-uh, he's bisexual."
we all replied with an "ooooooh, so it's ok to be bisexual, but not a
lesbian." the boy didn't reply. my partner asked the boy if he liked
mozart. his reply: "who's that?" we were all shocked/disappointed, but
later reflected on the implications about today's youth...
hey, just so ya know, this happening was all very kidding and friendly.
my friends and i are all early to mid-twenties. i think the boy was
trying to impress his younger friends by talkin' to an older crowd. it
was cute, but also a little...scary.

heh heh heh... well only a few short (11 or so) months ago i did not

in order to buy a ton of ig. they - ig - are still steadily gaining. :-)

sampler of new music (with sarah). has anyone read
this magazine before? what's it like? good?
what about those cds inside? i hope
no one has posted about this, because i am already

take a lot more work and knowledge.

also, i never did manage to get one of the *blue* ig ball caps, so if

negotiated cash) for that. i have an extensive selection of boots, plus
these cds to trade:
tame yourself - ig, michael stipe sing the co-written "i'll give you my skin"
theodore: an alternative music sampler - "kid fears" live
stanley, son of theodore - "pushing the needle..." live
ksca live from the music hall, vol. 2 - "reunion" live, plus joan osborne,
michelle shocked, lisa loeb, john hiatt, jill sobule, matthew sweet,
joan armatrading, wild colonials, and more!
michelle malone and drag the river, live building fires over atlanta - 5
song live promo.
i also have an extra copy of the sots calendar and the pulse! cover story.

subject: backstage at red rocks
mime-version: 1.0
content-type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"
my partner tori and i had the good luck of being invited to join a friend
at the ig red rocks show. best of all, this friend offered not only
tickets to the thursday show, but backstage passes! so twist my arm
already, right? :) we quickly booked a flight to denver and purchased
tickets for friday night too.
many of you have written about the red rocks shows, so i won't go into
those with any detail. i will just say that it was quite a coup for the
girls to get patti smith to open for them, and she was amazing (even though
much of the audience had no clue who she was). red rocks is just an
amazing place to see a show, and i was pleased to return. the crowds were
excellent, standing throughout both thursday and friday shows, very
participative where appropriate and quiet too when it was called for. i
think the thursday night show was the best i've seen this year (compared to
american u., chastain park, 2 wolf trap shows, and friday at red rocks). i
was a little surprised not to get more encores out of 'em on friday night,
with it being the last night of the tour (someone posted that they did 4
encores... in fact, they did their usual 1, but there were 3 or 4 songs in
it). the audience was definitely not lacking enthusiasm.
now, to the good stuff! i've never met the girls before, even though i've
been a fan since '89. i'm just not the type to make an effort to meet
folks off-stage, i'm grateful for the music and don't feel they owe me
anything more. so the opportunity to meet them backstage was a real treat
for me. i've never been backstage at any venue with a capacity of greater
than 500 people, so that was cool too! i was very surprised to find that
there were tables and chairs for people to sit at. i guess i kind of
figured that ig would come out together and be mobbed by the folks with
passes and asked for autographs, pictures, etc. in fact, it was very laid
back. we all (15-20 people) took seats and waited anxiously (at least, *i*
was anxious!) for them to arrive. emily came out first, probably about 20
minutes after the end of the show. she went immediately to one table of
friends, and talked to them for quite a while. she then turned to my group
of friends and started talking to us. i took the opportunity to tell her
that i really admired the way that she and amy honored their predecessors,
helped those coming along behind them, and contributed to charities, to
which she said "that's just how it works!" (of course, if it was, their
actions wouldn't stand out!) i also told her that i have enough cds to run
a radio station, and that ig were one of just a handful of artists that i
can say have never let me down, every cd is indispensable. emily spoke in
awestruck terms about patti smith's performance, and said what a tough act
that was to follow; she'd also said patti was interested in joining them
for more shows, and they'd look into that. we talked for a while, and then
she was getting ready to meet some other people and said, "we'll see y'all
tomorrow night, right?" we explained that we had tickets for tomorrow
night's show but not passes, and she assured us that she'd take care of that!
amy came out a short time later, and sat at *our table*, talking to some
folks we didn't know. i cannot even begin to convey how difficult it was to
carry on a casual conversation with my friends with amy only an
arm's-length away, and that *voice*! <sigh> by the time amy got a chance
to talk to us, it was late, and she was tired. she was pleasant, but we
could tell she wasn't up to a lot more conversation, so we were content
with greetings. it was pretty neat listening to her talk about mundane
things with our mutual friend. i think i'm pretty good at keeping things
in perspective as far as recognizing that they're just people, but it's
another level of understanding to actually see people you've admired on
stage talking about day-to-day things.
we headed back to the hotel very happy, and looking forward to the friday
show. tori and i realized that emily was very busy, and that there was
always a chance that she wouldn't be able to get the passes taken care of
for us, so we were prepared to be disappointed. but when we arrived on
friday, there we were, on the guest list! i'll never forget emily's
generosity in doing that for us.
this night backstage was even better... we continued our conversations with
them; highlights were emily showing us the permanent dents in her fingers
from playing guitar, and amy showing us her tattoo (it's much more
detailed, more interesting up close than i had gathered from photos). we
got to chat with amy a lot longer this night, and she was really terrific,
gave us lots of time to say what we had to say and ask what we wanted to
ask, giving thoughtful answers. and i hate to tell you amy-fans this, but
it's really true: she is *much* cuter in person, pictures to not do her
justice (thought the acoustic guitar cover comes close!)!
we actually took a camera with us both nights, but couldn't bring ourselves
to ask for a picture. it just wasn't that kind of scene. everyone was
just relaxed, waiting their turns for amy and/or emily to come say hello,
not at all like music store signings and the like. we did ask them to sign
our passes, and i've scanned mine in and put it on my ig page
(http://www.mindspring.com/~indigo/indigo.html).
the rest of the band came out and chatted too, though i didn't get to talk
to any of them for long except josh, who assured me that the borrowers
sound *exactly* like ig, and i would love them. :) i was hoping to get a
chance to tell sara that she's got one hell of a gig, and she must be one
of the most beloved bass players on the road today, but her appearance was
very brief and i missed her. jerry seemed very friendly and spent a lot of
time with a few folks.
so i am very pleased to report that if my brief interaction with ig is any
indication, they are just as sweet, just genuinely *nice* people, as you
might expect them to be. what a treat for me to have an opportunity to
meet my all-time favorite artists, and have them be just as cool as i had
hoped. too much to ask, really. seeing ig at red rocks is a wonderful
thing all by itself, but the added experience of meeting them afterward
made it a weekend i'll never forget!

geez talk about down right incorrect. i listened to the girls for two years
before i knew anything about them, least of all that they were gay!!! i
mean, maybe i was naive. i wasn't listening for sexual content in their
music. i got into it on a whole other level. it actually came as a shock to
sweet and innocent little me that they were lesbians. it was like, 'oh
really? that's interesting." i did listen for a while to see if there were
any references to it but nothing really striking that i could find. so i
think this statement is just a tad out of line, and clearly a product of
the writer's skewed imagination!

sorry to butt in, but i thought someone on the list might want one of
these ig posters in a i got as part of a tape trade through the elvis
costello list.
i have two two-sided record store promotional posters for the indigo
girls and *shaming the sun.* the front side features a color photo of
amy and emily sitting in the window of a ruined adobe, with *indigo
girls* above the photo and *shaming the sun* below. side two features a
half-toned b&w photo of the girls walking in a field, with a blurb
about the album superimposed. it's all very finely printed on heavy duty
paper.
i'd like to get $10 each for them, which includes postage and the
requisite mailing tube, which will cost me about $4, so you can think of
it as $6, plus $4 shipping, if you like.
first two requests gets 'em.
now back to your regularly scheduled discussion.

patrick

hey everyone!
it's so nice to be back...i recently returned from a wonderful
greatly-needed vacation. i apologize to all who have sent me
blanks...they'll be on their way asap.
while in ny, i had the pleasure of meeting my grandparents irish
exchange student. patrice was very interested in my music, she had never
heard of the indigo girls...she loves galileo. i gave her a copy of my "best
of the indigo girls" so she can bring it back to n. ireland with her. she
promised she would let all of her friends listen. she says they are
"brilliant!" very cute! =)
i was just wondering if there has been a set date for the vh1 show (i
hope i didn't miss it!) and if there has been any word about any florida
concert dates <fingers crossed>. any info would be greatly appreciated.
thanks in advance!
*believe in yourself*

subject: greetings/question
hi everyone!
it's been quite some time since i have been listing here, but i
missed ya, and am back with some questions:
1. ( this probably has been answered before, if so please post
to me privately...) i recently just saw the video for shame on
you, and wondered if anyone is able to translate the spanish
statements at the end of the video. something about being
made in memory of the freedom fighters... .. would love to
know what the whole quote says...??
2. does anyone have any information about what's happening with
touring in the fall....i.e. are the girls coming back to the midwest
at all??? here in mi, last time they toured (with so) they played the
palace in
the spring and then came back to hill auditorium in the fall to do a
smaller venue- show. keeping my fingers crossed this will happen
again.
3. again i am sure this is been posted already, but i just read the article
in spin, and learned that amy tattooed her chest. yikes!! this may be
bordering on being too personal to ask, but does anyone know what
the new tattoo entails?? amy's talking about it in the article, so i am
hedging my bets that i can ask this and not get flamed. =)
okie dokie! that's all for now!! thanks a bunch, listees!!
happy to be here,
folkie!

okay...
for those of you who have not the time to cherish my little moment go
ahead and hit tat delete key :)
well, in the town i live in -lubbock tx- it is what is known as a dry
town...no alcohol sold inside city limits except for restaurants and
bars...so all the alcohol stores are located right outside of
town...well i work at one of these stores and we were pretty busy this
afternoon and this gentleman came in and said he needed five cases of
olympia beer... i had to use this microphone to tell our stockers to
bring the cases to my register, and i had this line of customers all
holding there precious beer and i meant to say "i need give cases of
olympia beer to register three" but wouldn't ya know, i said "i saw the
sun dying in olympia running on capitol lake"...needless to say i
slightly red in the face when i realized what i said <covering face in
embarassment>
but on a good note....this group of women came through my line and all
of them said at once "now i ask you for some relief"....so i felt a
little better :)
now back to something important

i went to the official website and have read people's postings about "the

"the view with barbara walters." (these surely are the same program?) the
dates are also different. i have seen august 14th, september 14th, and
september 24th. also: did someone post that this is a morning show? if so,
it doesn't seem like their would be that many repeats, and barbara w. in the
morning?

well, david,
you are correct it is an import. it's just songs from the first five
studio albums. i saw it at tower records recently...it used to cost
around 17.00 but now it's up to 24.00.....i work at a different music
store and we can't seem to get any copies for sale.
hope that's enough information,
