for reasons i don't quite understand, the lf website is reporting last
night's crowd as being a record for the tour. i too thought the chicago
show had a bigger crowd because the capacity for world theatre on the lf
website is listed as 35,000 whereas the shakopee venue is listed as 28,000
(if i remember correctly). everything i heard said the chicago show was a
sellout so unless we have the capacity wrong, i don't know what's up. but
one would think the lf folks wouldn't get that wrong.

the reporter did mess up one other part saying, "male musicians have been
featured on some of the tour's stops." unless she meant members of the
bands, she was in error. she did get the next part right though. at the
news conference in milwaukee sarah announced that she had changed her mind
about inviting male acts on next year's tour. apparently some of the
"braver performers" approached her and asked her to reconsider. i can't
help but wonder if a certain duo we know were some of those "braver
performers." ;)

good one, caroline...i'll eat your shoe too!!! chatter! chirp! man, i
died laughing when i first heard that song. thanks for reminding me of
it. :) not that i ever have or ever will, but i doubt i could eat a
loquat with a straight face after hearing that song.

so has anyone ever seen them do this song or what? if not, i think we
should all start requesting them to do it. it would be a great thing to
see, i do believe.

actually...the pioneer press (http://www.pioneerpress.com/entertainment/ent_docs/031865.htm/) reported attendance was 33,000. what i don't understand is that capacity was originally advertised at 20,000. hmm...

anyway...it's been 2 months since i have had time to read the list, but i'm gonna post a brief rambling about my lilith experience.

when we arrived (@ 11pm on the 19th), we were trying to figure out if we were in the right place, because no one else was there. turns out we were first. go figure. so my 5 friends and i had a blast playing in the barren parking lot and running around like idiots. we decided to nap for a while from 5am - 7am. the next people arrived between 7 and 8(ok, so we were 8 hours early, so what?) the next 7 hours in line were cold, but well worth it. my friend and i had the esteemed honor of being the first people in front of the stage(very out of breath).
the concert blew me away. i can't even express how much it affected me seeing that many of the musicians i adore in one place.

a brief list of my opinions:

drink tickets got the big thumbs down with ticket bastard this time. tix bastard charged me enough to buy 5 tickets, but i got 4(service charges), and you had to buy water, even though security repeatedly told us we couldn't bring water or backpacks in with us. now i have 6 tickets for my scrapbook(a three dollar street value)

also...i felt really bad when i found out iatse was picketing. they weren't there when we got there, or we would have brought them food or snacks or something.

i missed the acoustic stage to guard my place by the main stage. if anyone saw it, please mail me and let me know how it was.

mary jane lamond was wonderful. i had never heard of her, but am planning on picking up a disk by her now. if she has more than one, does anyone have a recommendation?

wild strawberries: missed them because i was in line for a drink($2 for a little water bottle).

dar williams: fantastic. i have never seen her live, so it was amazing. to those who were there: my friend that was with me happens to work at seward co-op and doesn't shave. she almost fainted when dar mentioned that!

meridith brooks: i haven't listened to her before, and it wasn't quite my style, but was still enjoyable.

shawn colvin: again, hadn't heard her, but was very impressed. i will definitely buy her album(s) soon.

jewel: this is when the masses started closing in. in my rush to stand directly in front of the stage, i didn't consider 33,000 people would try to push there way into my exact spot during the show. still was excellent. to anyone who hasn't seen her live, it is amazing. her yodeling made me gasp.

ig: wow! my second time seeing them(first at northrop last year) and this time i could see them. and get pictures. in a month or so i will be able to put them up on a web site for those who want to see them.) i couldn't write down the set list, but as was said before, it was pretty typical i think. amy's soc was the first one i have seen, and it sent shivers down my spine. closer to fine, featuring sarah, pat benatar and meridith brooks was worthy of the final encore. it was tough for sarah to follow it up.

sarah: it was sad seeing a constant stream of people leaving during her set. angel was excellent. big yellow taxi with everyone on stage was great.(even though the crowd rushing the stage trampled my camera and jacket)

overall, it was the best concert i have ever attended, and am counting the days to the next one...364.

if anyone recorded any sets, please reply personally...i couldn't sneak my md recorder in. :(

hey folks,

i'm up late and thought i'd get a little typing practice in :) i saw the
girls do uncle john's only one time..but it was neat. it was a show in
cincinnati ohio in april of 93 i think at a place called bogarts. a guy
and a girl had been requesting it all night, and the girls said they
didn't know the lyrics. the couple said they had the lyrics written out..i
guess they were thinking ahead..but anyway..the show went on and they
didn't play it..they did their standard three encore songs and left the
stage..all the house lights came on..background music starting playing and
people started leaving. about half the crowd had left when amy comes
walking back on stage..then emily..they make a sign to turn off the
lights....they pull the couple up on stage with lyrics in hand and do the
song..it was great. it's the only time i've seen a band come back out
after the house lights went on. unfortunately, the person who taped the
show had already packed up his stuff and so it didn't make it onto the
circulating tape. i also saw it on a special that aired on nbc..i think it
was called in concert...wait..abc..yeah..it was on the dead and they did a
bit about the deadicated album and also included a clip of the girls doing
uncle john's..it was cute because emily flubbed the lyrics and the camera
was close up on here right when she did and she made a funny face.

i made the pilgrimage from ohio to eugene to see the girls open for the
dead and they most certainly did not play together at any time..that would
have been really weird..but also really cool. in the post show interview,
they were asked why they didn't do uncle john's and they both laughed and
i think amy said "i don't think we do it quite as good as them."

p.s. since it feels down right weird to post without including some
collectibles news..here's some new stuff i came across. note: the first
items i'm writing about are not for sale..just for information purposes.
i'll probably tack on some for sale stuff at the end..but i'll draw a line
and put for sale ...there was some confusion with my last post.

i picked up some stuff from the cbs records vaults..about 16 pages of
studio reservations for the girls from the self titled album. basically it
just has different info about the studio and the times the girls are
scheduled to use it. i will try to get some pictures on my web site after
i get the other 123,432,125 pictures up that i'm supposed to! :)

i also picked up some sort of studio copy of the closer to fine video..i
haven't actually receive it yet, but it's supposedly about triple the size
of the normal video cassette..i don't want to say it's the video
master..but it's some sort of recording used before it's actually dubbed
to vhs tape..i forget the letters used to describe the format ..htsc or
some combination there of..if there are any video production people out
there, i'd be very interested to hear what exactly i'm getting..but i'm
pretty darn excited even if i don't know what it is :)

i picked up a 12" version of the import closer to fine cd single that has
the black cover and says 'limited edition 4 track cd contains 3 live
tracks'...and of course the album says limited edition 4 track 12" ..the
songs are closer to fine studio and live...mona lisas and mad hatters and
american tune live..so i had the cd..but discovered the 12"..it's
cool..definately try to pick one up.

i got another handful of the swamp promo cassettes..just the same thing
with three different colors of covers..so far we've got white, grey, green
and burgundy.

there are at least 3 different press kits for shaming of the sun out..the
neatest being a fold out one with bio info on one side and a picture on
the other.

i guess that's about it!

releases specified that that commercial releases = epic albums. i posted

ok, i just have to say this.....a big step for me since i'm "outing" myself

the greatest singer/songwriter ever to come out of our generation ;o) got a
big boost from writing, performing and producing commercials. they are

i was just reading the morning paper when this caught my eye. it's from a
regular column called "lake effect" which could easily be described as the

it's long past summerfest, and milwaukee's still rocking. witness this
trio of music-related anecdotes:

amiable: when amy ray -- one half of the indigo girls -- bopped into
milwaukee one day before lilith fair, she caught up with friends connie
grauer and kim zick -- both halves of mrs. fun. dinner was at mimma's,
followed by an impromptu musical session at grauer's home. "we played
some new stuff for her and gave her a tour of brady st. she loved that,"
grauer says.

payback is sweet. during indigo girls' lilith fair set (tuesday at the
marcus amphitheater), grauer joined in on percussion during the mass jam
session of the indigo song "closer to fine." zick stayed in her seat, in
row f.

for those not from the area, brady street is an eastside milwaukee street
lined with some clubs, coffee shops, a few galleries, up and coming
restaurants, tattoo shops, etc. it's a focal point of the f.e.s.
(fashionable east side).

and in case you've forgotten, mrs. fun played on swamp.

radio valencia is a 4-block walk from the venue where michelle will play,

district of san francisco, just below the castro district. convenient
public transit includes the j-church trolley (best trolley ride in sf!),
the 48 bus (connects with bart at 24th), and the 24 divisadero bus.

the venue is very small (150-200 capacity?). show starts at 8pm, doors
open at 7:30pm... *very* limited seating, and most will have to stand...
many will arrive by 7pm to wait in line, hoping to get one of the few
seats near the stage.

tickets are $12, available from bass, plus $2.50 service charge.

just found this review in a local atlanta paper called "poets, artists &
madmen" (volume 4, no. 7). if you have not gotten 'beneath the devil moon'
yet, i urge, beg, plead that you run out and purchase it.. it's poetry in
motion...

no novice to recording, malone is only 30 but this is already her fifth
album.  with that experience comes a maturity, intelligence and subtle
strength that flows through these 11 singer/songwriter mid tempo rockers.
her association with the indigo girls (who help out on barely audible
background vocals on one cut) [actually, e b'round sings on the title track
as well - cc] has given her much needed visibility as she opens major venues
for them, but on the basis of this fine release she'll be fine on her own.
malone's emotional vocals recall a huskier sheryl crow or a folksier chrissy
hynde (especially on the 'mystery achievement' chords of 'devil moon'), but
her tough backing musicians add an abrasive, rollicking edge that's absent
from most singers in her genre.  she alternates btw. soft and raspy or loud
and husky, often in the same song, but nothing is sung without a stunning,
fervent attachment that cuts through the sometimes bassy mix.  malone's an
original but dives into patti smith gasses on 'speaking of fueled' as she
recites poetry in a distant, overdubbed, tinny speaking voice against a
grinding accompaniment. [see my sig line below - cc]
malone's approach is consistently intense with a no bullshit stance that
drives home even the most subtle of these rockers with a biting vengeance.
she clearly means business, and like it's title, 'benath the devil moon'
shines with natural brooding haze and a creeping, shadowy power. - hal

i heard fare thee well at the ig's first bumbershoot appearance (9/1/91)
and they were into playing all kinds of *new* stuff (pre rop)--emily
introduced ftw as a brand new song that she had just finished in the
last few days. it was beautiful. i cried. and then i couldn't wait
for it to be on their next album--which turned out to be rop, and
guess what? no ftw. i could have died.

i haven't heard it live since. and there's part of me that doesn't
want to. hearing it that one time was so incredible that, oh, i
don't know...it's enough.

hi all!

i am still recovering from the the excitement of the girls' performance in
shakopee this past wednesday so try to excuse the disorganization of this
particular post. i just wanted to ask a few questions of the group and
maybe a favor or two of some kind soul out there.

okay the question is...in acoustic guitar emily (i think) said that they
had to tour all year befor they could begin to work on the acoustic stuff
for the new album...so does this mean they will be booking more dates
beyond the hte dates? i know that as of today none of those dates exist,
but i was just wondering if anyone could verify that they will keep
touring through the end of this year, or just stop at the end of october.

the two things i am trying to find are a copy of tower's pulse magazine
with ig on the cover (june or july i think), as well as a copy of ig
doing austin city limits.  actually i'm missing a lot of the older stuff
like letterman appearances too, so if anyone feels like blessing me with a
little of their time and video footage i'd be more than willing to
reimburse you for your time and effort as well as materials.  i would also
be willing to trade for any boots i have, or some of the billion front
row pictures i took at shakopee's lilith (well okay, maybe not *that*
many, but i did average more than 2 pictures per minute whenever the
girls were on stage).  in addition i have some even closer shots from
their march ann arbor show.

so if any of you busy people have time to help me out, just let me know
what i can do to make it worth your time. thanks again for your time!

hey y'all, sorry to waste the bw but i'm wondering if it has been confirmed
that the indigo girls will play in las vegas, nevada on sept 30 as part of
their hte tour?  i checked out www.indigogirls.com and www.honorearth.com but
didn't see any info about this particular show.  if anyone has any
information about it (or any hte shows in california or nevada) or knows how
i can find ou tmore about it, please email me privately.  thanks!

i have a totally idiotic question for those of you who were in shakopee on
wednesday, especially if you were close to the front for any part of the
show.  i lost a green long-sleeved t-shirt with white stripes down the
arms sometime late that night right in front of the security railing on
amy's side of the stage.  did anyone happen to pick it up?  if anyone has
info regarding the whereabouts of my precious little shirt can you e-mail
me?  losing it was one of the only low points in the evening besides
the drunk couple of meredith fans, that glitter girl, and nearly getting
trampled to death for the last song.  but it was all most definately worth
it.

oh and btw, for those of you (jen, kate...) who shared in my sign-making
dilemma in the parking lot, i ended up holding up those 3 during the
girls' set and another one i made later during the final encore, and amy
looked over and read every single one of them and smiled each time i
brought out a new one. so even though we didn't hear chiapas bound or
winthrop, it was *still* a huge success!

that's all. sorry for wasting the time of those who weren't there.

lilith fair toronto shows? i'm also looking for ig at unh april 12 and
newport folk fest '96. unfortunately, the only boots i have to trade are
the april 17 boston boot (which includes the mix radio interview & mama kin
show) and study hall 1981 / madison square garden '89.

igc: at the ig signing that took place at lilith on august 15... i'm
standing before my songwriting idols, and instead of perhaps expressing my
admiration and appreciation for their music, i forget how to spell my best
friend's name. i had asked amy & emily to sign a postcard for her birthday,
and amy said, "how do you spell maureen?" suddenly my mind went blank.
emily laughed at (or was that with) me. and that has been my ig experience
of the summer. :)

happy weekend everyone,

yesterday i was at hmv (music store here in montreal), begging for more lf
tapes. they were kind enough to give me a couple of extras :)
(so if anyone else wants to trade for one, i have two more)

the point of this is that the manager saw clearly that
i was thrilled about the tapes, that she gave me this cd called my sister sings.
i am always happy when anyone gives me a cd (who isn't?), but
when i left the store, i turned it over to see that it has a live version
of gotm!!! it is just a+e, and sounds like an early version of the song.
it sounds to me like they were sitting around with friends, and someone said
"oh, play that fun orange juice song you just wrote."
the best part, is the line in this version (well any version really, but...)
"with every lesson learned, a line upon your beautiful face."
it is just so clear, and so strong.
and...
instead of starting with drums and "i'm gonna clear my head,"
it starts solo banjo, and "the saddest sight my eyes can see..."

other artists on the cd are (5 songs):

i'll be audiotaping this, but i would not mind getting some tips from
folks about how to avoid getting an amazing amount of white noise like
i did on the chicago webcast.
i have an isdn link and a sound card and was plugging the headphone
out directly to my tape recorder. i was surprised when i listened to
the tape that there was a lot of noise. i had also tried plugging the
line out to the tape recorder but the audio level on that was low.

any suggestions out there?

i have a quick question.  i would love to see the hard rock show that ig
are performing on vh1.  unfortunately the city of chicago feels that they
don't have enough channels (like 80) to give comedy central their own so
after like 5 or 6 vh1 switches to comedy central.  does anyone know if vh1
is planning a late night repeat that i could tape?  thank you for any
immediate info.

try adjusting the volume controls on your computer. i have *no* idea if
this will work, but if you have a system that has different volume
levels avaliable for different sounds<midi's, wav's, etc.> maybe you can
find the right one and crank it.<i know it's probably a slide button
controlled with the mouse, but "slide it" simply doesn't convey the same
emotional response.<g>

just wanted to add a few comments about the shakopee show, besides of
course the fact that it absolutely was great.

i know there is talk about who had the largest attendance. when i called
canterbury downs on monday they said the field would hold about 40,000
so i guess that is why it turned out to be the largest.

one non-ig comment: pat benatar's new cd should be great! i was sitting
three people back from the village stage when she performed. sure am
glad someone mentioned that she had signed on or i might not have made
it a point to check out the village stage.

i would agree that most people were there to see jewel and indigo girls.
funniest thing was that after jewel, many people who had wandered
(pushed, kicked, mashed their way) to the front to see her then very
politely headed back to their seats (what seemed like a mile away for
some) to let us i.g. fans push to the front. unfortunately i did not get
the prime front row view like many other list members have, but i was
satisfied with our seats.

other posts have already elaborated on the finer points of each song but
i want to give a short description of the mood at lillith fair. hearing
i.g. perform outside with so many fans all around was unbelievable.
after their performance we headed back to our original seats (not quite
the mile away) to listen to the rest of the concert. the moon was two
days past its full shape and shining in its waning summer yellow-orange
color. the temp. was a bit cool, though with so many bodies around one
was quite comfortable with shorts and a t-shirt. and then one saw the
most perfect view: all these music fans, huge stage with the lf
backdrop, awesome performers, cool clear moonlit night and there in
bright view right above the stage was the big dipper. hey kind friends -
"big dipper hanging over the city." couldn't get the song out of my
head, wish they would have played that one.

all in all, i had a great time in shakopee. good friends, decent
weather, tons of laughs and awesome music. definitely worth the four and
a half hour drive. if anyone got a boot of this concert please e-mail me
as i need to hear scooter boys again.

so i'm a little old, and a little slow, and i only heard of michelle malone
in june via the ppv concert, but i am totally blown away by devil moon.  so
far i have bought 5 copies to give to friends and i have ordered all her cd's
and the video and it's still not enough.
her voice is so lyrical yet so tough, i can't get over it.  and her speaking
voice (on speaking of fueled) is so reminiscent of hendrix and morrison
(there, see how old i am???) that it makes me quiver.  and the songs are so
rockin' yet i hum them all day long---damn, i'm obsessed---can you tell???
now for some dumb naive questions-----she is gay, right??? (i hope).....has
anyone started a list for her???......how come she's not incredibly
well-known???

if i'm not mistaken dar williams is supposed to be performing live on
vin scelsa's idiot's delight show (sunday aug 24 102.7).  it's a nyc
station the show starts at 8pm and goes on till the early am.  usually

reading the old testament straight through, and when i came to these verses
it sure did seem to fit:

hey kfs! i am excited to be back on the list; although oregon, san
francisco, and minneapolis were nice, it's also nice to have my lil'
on-line community back...

lilith was interesting.  if you are on the dar list, you have already
heard my rant about how it wasn't really about women in music at all, so i
shan't repeat it; i'm so sad to hear that i missed pat benatar at the
village stage!!!  but i did get to hear awesome performances by meredith
brooks and the ig.  these two acts were by far the best of the evening,
and the best-siuted for the venue as well.  poor dar had a cold, and
should not have to perform in front of 25000 people with no band.  of
course i still love her.
anyway, the ig were great...again.  i can't wait to see them, perhaps this
fall?  anyone know if they are coming anywhere near iowa city again?  but
this concert really rocked; they were just fantastic.  sys was so
beautiful, as always, and i didn't even get annoyed by any emily songs
(short sets may lead to this, since i didn't have to hear wood song, or
power of two, or caramia, thank goddess [sorry em fans, i know, she's a
fine guitar player and a great musician, i just tend to dislike some of
the lyrics])...what's my point.  oh, does anyone have a boot of lilith
fair in shakopee??  i would love one.  i really only want meredith, shawn
colvin, the first two jewel songs (her set went downhill when the boring
backup band arrived), and the ig; in reality, i'd settle for the ig since
they were so damn awesome.  the water is wide with jewel and sarah
mclachlan was brilliant, as was the completely joyful closer to fine.  :-)

blah blah blah...now i have to go get ready to teach tomorrow. what a
come-down!

so i've been lurking for the past few months...too many friends crashing at
my house...the ig room <waving at tig, grl, diva, x...gosh this is getting to
be like your wav tig! lol!>...ig concerts...lilith...love...you get the

amyray, it's finally time that i come out and yell at the top of my

barring divine vhs intervention...i will finally have the long awaited hard

and now for my gripe of the day...i spent a half an hour yesterday trying to

finshed...the video was sketchy and there was no sound! hmmm...did anyone

hello everyone! i thought it was time to stop lurking and introduce myself!

my name is heather and i am a new ig fan! lori j., who is also on this
list, was the first to introduce me to the girls. we decided in june to go
to the polaris lilith fair...me because i wanted to see jewel and lisa
loeb, lori because she wanted to see the girls. lori made me promise that
we wouldn't leave until the girls were done or else we had to drive
seperately so i said sure...anything to save a few bucks on parking :-)

well all of july and up to lilith she made me listen to the girls over and
over again...they aren't usually the type of music i'd listen to...but i
got to know some of their songs and thought "they're ok". now after seeing
them live i am hooked! at lilith we were with twink, barb, kelly, cassie,
don and deidre, and daryl. i also got to meet erin from this list. after
the girls were done twink and barb joined us again and i looked at them and
just said....now i'm hooked...and i am! we had such a good time at the
show, now i will do anything to see the girls in concert whenever i can.

this week i finally got my first ig tapes...i was able to get 1200 curfews
from columbia house and i am already wearing it out :-) i have shaming of
the sun on order from columbia house also since i can now finish my
agreement with them and get ig music at the same time!

lori is coming over tonight for an ig night...we are going to watch the web
cast of lilith and tapes that she has of the girls and then tape the vh-1
special! i can hardly wait!!!!

now a little about me...i am 27 married and have 2 young children ages 7
and 4. last night my 7 year old said to me that she couldn't get the ig
music out of her head and maybe she is starting to like them :-) another
new fan in the making...uh oh...guess this means i will have to take her to
a concert!

well i am sure this is long enough and probably boring as heck, so i will

daemon, i thought i would let everyone know that my order arrived in
about 2 weeks.

my favorite so far: the new mongrels..... this cd is great.  amy and
emily have some great parts on several songs.  michelle malone, gerard
mchugh, michael lorant, and dede vogt  also contribute with their talent
to this cd.... i can't get it out of my cd player.  i can't believe i
waited this long to get this cd.

you also gotta try gerard mchugh. if you like thin line from 1200
crufews, you should hear gm do it (if you never had).

the air date is set for august 24th. all times are edt/pdt. hard rock
live is shown on sundays at 8:00 pm. it is repeated monday at 1:00 am
and 8:00 pm and the next saturday (august 30th) at 5:00 pm.

we are three women in albuquerque, new mexico travelling [hopefully] to
atlanta in mid-october and attending the ig concert in valdosta, ga. if
there is anyone in that area that can help us with ticket information, please

also, i snagged a cd yesterday [an import] called complicated girls.  it's
really interesting.  anyone else heard of this?  it has live recordings from
england, new york and philadelphia, put out by toronado.  they didn't know
the names of some the songs.  had them listed wrong.  chickenman was
incomplete, which really upset me as this has become one of my favorites.
just ask heather.  "heather, play chickenman for me!"  trade me?

from what i've heard and figured out from various sources, tickets for boone and blacksburg hte shows will be sold in those locations first and foremost, then they will be offered up to phone sales. sigh. :-i

my gf and i have planned a road trip to see four shows in a row: boone, blacksburg, columbia and savannah. we have tickets for the last two. the first two haven't gone on sale yet.

here's the deal. if any of y'all know when and how tickets are coming for these two shows, email us privately. if anyone out there lives in either town or can get to either town for ticket sales, email us privately.

a while ago i wrote and said i really didn't like sots that much and pretty
much assumed i would almost never listen to it. however, my husband bought
me a discman when in japan recently (aren't i spoiled? i got yummy swiss
chocolates too!) and so yesterday i sat down and listened to sots quite
loudly and with no interruptions and have to say it's the best!!! i love
it! yes!!! i can't get enough of it. i finally worked out that i love the
way amy sings on this cd. i hated it the first twenty spins or so but now
it's great. anyone who's still struggling with this cd - stick on some head
phone and let the girls sing to you! it's so damned wonderful!!!

hi everyone!  wasn't the show fabulous?!  well, let me cut right to the
chase...i am still at home(i leave for school in 2 days) and when the
girls came on i blasted the tv and both my parents went to watch them on
a different tv...and let me be alone-in peace!  to make a long story
short, after it was over i felt like i had to explain to my parents why
they are so great and spiritual- and why i love them so much.  have any
of you ever felt that way?  i felt like they were like "so that's who
you love so much?!" it's so hard to articulate how and why they are so
mezmorizing!  when i tried to explain their beauty to my parents i
didn't even know where to begin!  it is so frusterating to me...i want
people to see their talent and heart; often times i feel people just
look at them as being gay and therefore have a stigma attached to it.
what do you all think?  am i just crazy feeling like i always gotta
defend them and explain to people how unbelievable they are?!

     "i don't regret coming out.  i only wish i had done it earlier.  i was
just afraid of the stigma.  i didn't want to be identified as a lesbian
band first and a musical band second.  it was also my personal fear of
rejection," says saliers, who has been with her lover for three years.
"once we were both out, i was like, 'why wasn't it always that way.'  it's
better in the long run for more people to be out."

hi all,

i don't have the opportunity to post much, but i've been "hanging out" for a
few months and have really enjoyed it. the camaraderie and respect
expressed, most of the time, not only for each other but for the indigo girls
is rather touching. i've especially loved reading the concert reviews and
those stories relating a special indigo moment that's happened in one's day.

well i have such a story to share. i was in best buy, saw the 99cent cd rack
and figured i'd check it out, see if anything catches my eye.  i come across
this cd with a kind of distorted picture of a dog on it entitled "tame
yourself".  i think to myself is that the same cd w/indigo girls & michael
stipe song "i'll give you my skin", i've read about.  i've only been a fan
for a few years now so i'm not that familiar with all their stuff,  hence my
uncertainty. it turns out that it was. much to my delight and surprise, there
on the front cover third artist listed ig w/ michael. i snatched it up,
thinking for a buck how bad could it be and besides it's the indigo girls so
i knew i'd like atleast that song :). i ended up enjoying the whole cd, but
the harmony between amy, emily and michael at the end of the song is
definitely the highlight for me.  it's so beautiful. i have to stop what i'm
doing and just listen every time i hear it. come to think of it i find myself
doing that quite often when i listen to the girls.
anyway.....:) i figure it's the only copy there but i continue to browse the
rack.  well to make a looong story short :) i come across 2 other copies
which i proceeded to purchase, figuring i could pass along my good fortune to
some fellow ig fans.

so if you've made it this far, not only do i thank you for your indulgence,
:) but you might just be rewarded.  here's the point of my little story.  if
anyone's interested in receiving this cd then just e-mail me with your addy
and i'll pop it in the mail to you.  remember i only have 2 copies,
unfortunately :( so it'll be 1st come 1st serve.  but a friend of mine was
able to pick up a few copies of the ig starter kit cd from target. so if

i have just returned from my first ig concert. a virgin no more. my
first ig, the last lilith. i have never been so moved, so enjoyed a
concert or been so hungry for more. they were incredible despite the
fact that i waited for hours and my seat allowed me to see only amy
because they had to move back into the stage because of the rain (i was
over to the side). sarah had the crowd on her side but ig had their
hearts and mine. the energy, the vitality, their life... i don't have
the words. i'll leave the details to the experts but i just had to
share. wow. articulate ain't i. i was so happy they played the power of
two. must go to bed.

a friend of mine loaned me a tape to make a copy of and i was
wondering if any of y'all know where it came from or when.  it sounds
like an interview of a & e done by shawn colvin with a few songs
mixed in between the talk.  judging by the songs, it was done around
the time when n*i*s came out.  email me privately if you know

so my vcr finally decided to play with me! last night's show was excellent
(tho it was way too short imho!!!) a+e really looked like they were having a
good time as did the crowd (tho i couldn't believe i saw someone in the first
row with her arms crossed during scooter boys of all songs!

on sound...why did amy get all po-ed in the middle of one of the songs? i
thought that she was saying something about the sound of her guitar being

during the middle of sb - or i think it was the first break between verses,
or maybe the first solo-break....but, what amy was saying to i guess her
sound people - i thought was defintely "down!!!" and i think she was
motioning to her acoustic guitar. she said a few other things possibly,
but i'm pretty sure she said (or mouthed) "down" at least a few times....

at this point, and maybe even at the start of the song, i noticed her
volume was a little too high - especially since acoustic guitars usually are
only background music in live (electric) settings......and then after yelling
at the sound person, i think her guitar actually got a little quieter....or it
wasn't that out-front as much.....

also, what i thought was real funnnnny...... since ar was singing the
lead on sb, the camera was sort of following her in the beginning of the
song....so when she went towards the side of the stage to get
p*ssed-off at the sound levels (maybe), the side camera was right on
her and the director was probably like "here that fiery amy ray goes,
who will probably smile/laugh and joke with josh - or play to the crowd -
or the camera or something artistic-funky-like......(he has $$ in his
eyes)..." the director continues...."wait a minute! she's getting all p*ssed
off!.......go to camera 3 quick!!!!"
that was my take on the little situation....

also, didn't amy go nutz, or was just full of emotion? - on soy.....(and
also sb)......b/c on soy - she just seemed to be sooooooo focused on
her mike.....(or on this mike) and was really into her electric guitar.....
maybe, it was just there first song, and i was kind of blown away by
them being on tv.....and them being sooooo close to me.....sort of....

also, my other opinion <hehe> of what she said to the sound guy.......

it is funny...all this talk about parents and ig coming up now. in a
couple of weeks, my partner and i are taking my (71 year old) mother to
her first ig show...second row seats no less. in any case, it should
be interesting and fun for her...a new experience...and she won't have
to wonder what we're doing road-tripping to all these shows anymore.
she's a good sport...

   i just got back on friday...so what's up.  i spent the summer in nyc
and i'm so happy to be back. not that i hate the city but one can only
take so much drama for so long.
   i did however get to meet emily after the madsion squaree garden. i'm
sure i'll get a thousand flames after i tell my story but get over it.
   i was waiting outside the garden in my friends car waiting for them to
come out the stage door. well, an hour later emily and her girlfriend jet
inside a taxi and peal off to the east side. of course my friend followed
the taxi for twenty minutes all the way back to her hotel on the east
side. we then hopped out and screamed "ms. sailers!".
     she was very cool and signed my set list. we also got to give her a
great big hug. now, i just have to meet amy.
      i was also wondering if anyone would like to trade me a copy of
that pay per veiw thingy for say..three boots. i'm sure it was an
incredible concert. also, does anyone havee either a boot for the madsion
square garden or the mann music center concerts?

i went to the new (improved!) birchmere in alexandria, va. the other night
(to see laura love - wow! - and moxy fruvous), and was pleased to note not
one, but 2 autographed ig items on display. the first was a n*i*s flat,
with autographs to the owners. the second was a *huge* (4' x 4' maybe)
n*i*s promo poster (had an album release date) which was also autographed.
amy's autograph is worth noting... she drew 3 cats, one with a napsack
(underneath she wrote "nomad"), one with a headdress ("indian"), and one
with a halo ("saint")!

sounds like an ntsc video, which is simply the video format used in the uk
and elsewhere.

hey all!

first of all, i apologize if this thread already went through the list
when the concert was first shown--i've been gone for most of the
summer. i just wanted to ask (yet another) favor of those of you who have
been lucky enough to catch soy's video anywhere else besides the end of
the pay per view concert (why is it that every other headlining artist in
the entire lilith show has their video all over mtv and vh1, but soy is
nowhere to be found?).

anyway, what i'm particularily interested in are the words in spanish that
run at the bottom of the screen towards the end of the video. now the
problem is...despite my fluency in spanish, i cannot read fuzzy white
letters against a light background--especially when they are tilted to
allow room for the ppv credits. would anyone be willing and/or able to
type up those words running across the screen? i'd be more than happy to
type up a translation for anyone who might want one.

and while we're on the topic of things i can't read...can anyone make out
any of the letter amy's writing to tanner at the beginning of the clip?

they started the ig 's set @ 2:55 this afternoon eastern -- the stream is
supposed to be six hours long and can be found at the same place as last
night -- with less buffering problems!!!

if anyone is interested in going to the show in columbia on 9-21 at the
township auditorium the # to call to charge tickets is 803-251-2222.  the
# to the auditorium is 803-252-6530. tickets are $28.50 or $23.50.  i've
seen the girls here before, but i can't really remember where i was
sitting or anything about the concert because i was still on my high from
meeting amy (who was just walking down the sidewalk) earlier that day.
what i do remember is that no one seemed to mind if you headed out back
after the concert to meet the girls.  they were really cool and just
stood around talking to everyone after the show and signed autographs.
but this was a few years ago, security may be a little tighter this time.
i guess we'll just have to wait and see.

set 2: san diego/la2 - i made this for all the people who said they wanted
whatever i had, regardless of the quality.  surviving portions of my san
diego and second (7/3/97) l.a.  tapes, including the billy tipton mem.
sax. quartet opening in san diego, the complete l.a. set minus the encore,
several additional songs from the san diego set, and the encore from san
diego - together a long, slightly repetitive show. two cool versions of
cut it out with new stuff in the middle.  also needs 2 100 minute tapes.

the trees are almost identical so you can get both from the same person,
with the exception of january and february (sorry - bad planning on my part).

if you're new to this, just contact the person whose e-mail address is
listed opposite your birth month and they'll explain to you about how it
all works.

note: december is out of town until the end of the week. i think

does anyone happen to have a full size or large graphic of the strange fire lp? that song
means a lot to my girlfriend and i and i'd like it for an anniversary gift i'm making for her.

lotta discussion on this matter awhile back, and i didnt pay close attention
to it otherwise i woulda tole ya then...anyways...

the indigo girlies opened a couple of shows for the dead in oregon in 1993.
someone asked if that ig set was booted (i think).. yes, there is a boot of
their performance. no, they do not play with the dead. yes, i have a boot
of this.

you might have this boot too. it's on the "history of us" boot...tracks
2-9. emily (or was it amy...) says something about being grateful to be
able to open for the dead...(for those who dont know...history of us is a
boot with select performances from 3 different shows)

thats it. just wanted to ease those inquiring minds. :)

here is what i found on vh1's web site tonight, i thought most of you would
be interested:

lilith fair lives
the lilith fair made its final stop on sunday, august 24th in vancouver's
thunderbird stadium, but it won't be the last time the we'll see this
groundbreaking event this year.
the canadian broadcasting corporation will produce and air an hour long
documentary featuring performances from the femme festival in the fall. cbc
camera crews filmed footage of sarah mclachlan, meredith brooks, indigo girls,
shawn colvin, jewel and others during the fair's stop in toronto.
unfortunately,
they had to shoot the concert during two days of non-stop rain. but the
weather
didn't seem to affect the musicians, nor the crowd's enthusiasm.
fortunately for the film's editor, there won't be any problems splicing in
footage
of sheryl crow's performance. although separate footage was shot of her
performance in pittsburgh, it was conveniently raining there too.
camera crews from vh1 have been criss-crossing the country with the lilith
fair
all summer long. they are filming the festival from all angles for another
full-length documentary on the event. look for vh1's feature presentation
on the
entire 1997 lilith fair in the near future.

yes, all the time! i constantly get taunted and teased by my brother and
sister about listening to them--they claim i'm "obsessed", and since it's
not what they consider "cool music" they don't see why i bother to listen
to them--especially as much as i do. and then my parents don't like the
fact that they're gay (which they found out by way of my darling
siblings' blunt announcement--"mom, she's listening to a lesbian

right channel on sunday and taped whatever was on abc instead - duh!) and i

of the high school tour, so i still hope the can pull it off.

also, the valdosta state date on oct 18th isn't part of the hte tour, so i
expect to see more club and theater dates to be announced (all of which
will be within a 150 mile range of milwaukee ;) also, both amy and emily
have said in interviews that they are planning to visit sherlyn down under
in australia in early '98. thank goodness because she's been downright
ornery since last seeing them during the demo tour. and emily recently said
that something special with lots of surprises is being planned for the
spring so we should stay tuned for that.

you wouldn't believe this!...i'm cleaning up the house and look,
on tv, abc, during a break of the rosie o'donnell show, around 10:35am
(eastern u.s. time) i see a freakin' commercial of the indigo
girls!?!?!?!?!?...i couldn't believe it!...i just sat there...it was
probably 10 seconds (or seemed like it)...had the girls walking around a
bit and ended with "buy the whole collection"...they're telling
us?...<smile>...wow!...if only a blank had been in my vcr, i could have

for some weird reason, i can't get beyond the second or third message of the
first ig digest i received today.  there were a couple of topics in that digest
that were of interest to me and i would like to read them.  so, if anyone
has a message re:  boone, nc hte show, and  nashville lilith fair that
were posted sometime later last night or early this morning, could you

second, regarding what amy said during scooter boys (hard rock live), i
couldn't help but think she was maybe yelling for the sound person to turn
*emily's* guitar down, given how overpowering it was when she lit into her
solo.

and lastly, not to sound snippy and bitchy and all that, but it just seems
to me that maybe the hte/appy state organizers had a reason for boone, nc hte
tickets going on sale to students on wednesday and to "others" on thursday...
like, maybe they want students to have first dibs on the tickets?
boone is in the heart of the blue
ridge mountains and students probably have to travel a few hours in any
direction to see a really awesome concert.  they *ought* to have first dibs,
and there ought to be a limit on how many each student can buy, just as there
usually is with regular concert tickets...the reason being that with regular
concert tickets, scalpers will buy up gobs of tickets.  same goes for
school concerts where students are enticed by non-students to buy up concert
tickets (which, incidentally, are sold at a lower price...but that's not the
issue, as the main goal is to get a head start on the general public, to whom
tickets are to be sold on thursday.  i'm buying my tickets on thursday.

lurker dropping in here. does anyone know a contact address for michelle
malone (label, management, etc.)? i just got telemarketed from someone
asking if i had received promo info about her new album. when i asked the
person how she got my name, the phone went click. very weird and, quite
frankly, a little unsettling for me. i would like to write to someone

thanks to the folks who gave me all the advice about thunderbird stadium in
vancouver--my sis and i got there early (like at 10:30 am), parked the car,
hung out, found a bathroom, got in line. we were not in front. we were
about 200 folks back from the front. the very front of the line was held down
by some ig fans from seattle (they got profiled on the news later that
night).

it rained.  so, it's the pacific northwest, and that's what it does here.  i
went down to one of the little stages and listened to the billy tipton
memorial saxophone quartet, and noticed that there was someone next to me
really getting into the music.  i noticed that it was none other than sara
lee who was dancing to billy tipton, and trying to keep her all-access pass
tucked inside her jacket.  i smiled, she smiled and that was that.

i loved mary jane lamond (she did some great celtic music), and paula cole.

the folks at the record place said that the girls would be signing stuff at
7:30, but, it turned out that they showed up, unannounced much earlier in the
evening. damn. no indigo autographs for moi.

however,  shawn colvin did, in fact, show up to sign stuff, so i got to meet
her, got my shirt signed.  she was so gracious and fun to talk to.  i was
blithering on about how i had first seen her years ago in seattle, loved her
music, blah, blah, blah--then i stopped and said " i know that everyone tells
you that stuff, but your music is so great!"  she nodded and said that yeah,
everyone says that, but (and she smiled real big here) "it's still great to
hear it!"

the girls, of course, were in top form.  i'll let someone who was closer give
the fashion report.  the clouds opened and it really started to dump rain
while the girls were on, but no one seemed to mind.  there seemed to be a lot
of emotion in the place during the girls' set and during sarah mclachlan's
set.  it was the last night for lilith, and the energy was really there.

the set list, please:

acadian driftwood (an old band song that they did with sarah mclachlan,
lisa loeb, and shawn colvin--this was a high point of the set. this was
clearly sarah the hometown girl's night--she got a huge roar from the crowd
when amy introduced her for this song.

the water is wide (w/shawn colvin, sarah mclachlan--a truly beautiful
rendition---i've been trying to imagine jewel singing this with them and
can't, but hey, what do i know?

closer to fine -- with everyone. lisa loeb knew her verse by heart. it was
great.  i think that the girls are tremendously generous with their stage
time--and clearly it's fun for them and everyone else.  i'm guessing that it
felt like summer camp for the performers and i found it fun to watch all of
them enjoy being together.  i guess it's that feeling of community that this
tour seems to have created, and i don't care what rolling stone thinks of
this tour, so there! (there's a kind of nasty, sour grapes sounding article
in the current issue)

i loved this concert.  i would have liked more time from all the artists, but
then it would have needed to start in the am.  one part i didn't like (and
this is what i hate at every show i attend) are those *fans*who feel
compelled to crash the line, shove to the front, ask if the seat next to me
is really saved (yes, it's my sister's, she's in some god-forsaken bathroom
line and boy is she gonna be pissed if she comes back and finds your sorry
ass in it!).  sorry folks, if you want to sit where i'm sitting, get there
earlier. if you want to be in the front, get there when those brave
seattleites did.  if you can't, then go to the end of the line where you
belong, and stay there.  the other part i didn't care for was that it took a
really really really long time for folks to get in. the venue security folks
need to do things differently next time.  i also don't care for people who
spend all this $$ for concert tickets and then talk through the whole
concert.  this goes out to the bozo who sat in front of me.

people stayed for sarah's set.  she's their girl (actually a lot of us in the
pacific nw claim her!), it was her idea and her night to close.  she played a
great set.  even more rain for part of sarah's set, but people stayed put.
she brought everyone back out for an encore of big yellow taxi.  lots of
hugs at the end of the song--it's like they didn't want to leave.  it finally
stopped raining.

oh, one last thing.  at the seattle shows in july, they ran out of those $25
green *shaming of the sun* hats, so i ordered one from the fan club for $17,
'cuz i figured that taking my chances in vancouver would be unwise.  well,
folks, there's a new hat.  no sots hats in sight ('cept for the one on my
head), but!  there was this really cool blue tweed hat w/indigo girls on the
front--only the o in indigo is actually the sun.  very cool.  oh, and the
back?  it says *summer 1998*--that's right, folks.  *summer 1998*   so,
either it's for next year's tour, or it's a big mistake.  i bought it anyway.

so, i loved the show--can't wait for lilith '98.

y'all, go see wendy!!!! because of lorene's e-mail to me with
these dates a while back, i got to see wendy in phoenix when i was
vacationing there two weeks ago. what a great opportunity! heaven sent,

it was! this venue was small (as are probably all the venues above).
it was a hole in the wall devoted to folk music called fiddler's dream.
no owners. just a board of directors who run the non-profit organization

on cover charges (only $5 for wendy's concert), donations, refreshment
sales, and volunteerism.  this is what folk music is all about!
(intimacy,
sharing, connecting with the listeners, making the music accessible to
all, being raw and unadultered by too much sensationalism and over-
production.)  beats the hell out of too much commercialism and focus
on money money money!  (heck, it really beats the hell out of 24,000
seat venues and $40 tickets too!)  anyway, wendy was awesome.
she did two sets in two hours and all the best songs off her three
releases.
there were only about 30 people at the concert.  no shit!  it was one of
the
best concerts i saw this year because of its intimacy.  i got to sit
smack
in front of wendy with no one in front of me....only about 10 feet away.

(the place is only slightly bigger than my living room!) she was so
charismatic.
and she's an awesome guitar player....not to mention singer/songwriter.
she broke about four strings, two at once during her instrumental,
and we all had to wait as her assistant/guitar tech/etc. lisa changed her

strings.  wendy would break into a capella song, recite a poem, or just
talk
to us as we waited.  from this great experience, i can almost get the
feeling
of what it was like to be there for a&e's early careers in small venues
and
watch them rise.  if wendy bucklew's music gets around enough, she will
certainly have lots of success, hopefully following in the footsteps of
ig.
now is the time to see her in concert!  don't miss out!  ok, i'll get
off my soapbox now.

i missed sunday's hard rock live because i
don't have cable and my friend who does my
recording for me was out of town.  i missed
monday's repeat too.  so, i figured i could
get either saturday's 8/30 5 p.m. show or sunday's
8/31 1 a.m. show recorded.  these times were
given to us by deb.  anyway, i went to www.vh1.com
to confirm these times.  oops!  i missed my ig!
it seems that the saturday and sunday hard
rock live repeats are not of the ig/rusted root
show, as we previously thought.  rather, vh-1 has
got some "women first" thingy going and is
doing a hard rock live in the spirit of that.  so
if anyone is setting their vcrs with the hope of
getting ig/rusted root on saturday or sunday,
you will record the following show instead:

- chaka khan "i'm every woman" and "tell me
something good"
- cyndi lauper "time after time"
- paula cole "where have all the cowboys gone?"
- k.d. lang "the joker" and "the air that we breathe"
- i.g. "shame on you"
- shawn colvin "sunny came home"

so, it seems there will be a bit of ig (one song),
but all is not lost because this sounds like a great
line-up to me. i suppose this is a compilation
episode of past shows. it is worth recording, imho.

here's a bit of a review/our subjective personal experience from the
front (mostly).  vancouver lilith was great for the most part.  we were
up front, about 3 feet from the baricade, behind betsy and sundara and
some other seattlites.  twas a good place to be til the crowd to the
right of us started moshing to shaun colvin (huh ??) causing surges
toward the baricade, and that was a bit bizarre.  it was great seeing the
performers from so close, though.  paula cole was wild and wonderful.
what a performer, what moves she did with her music.  had the same urge
after seeing her as we did after seeing the ig live for the first time --
go buy that music, fast.  the ig were great.  why did the drunk guy
choose pot as the time to start harrassing us?  sue almost lost it.   a
woman stepped in and said she would be a buffer, thanks whoever you were.
sorry that meant he peeed on your feet instead of ours.  the ig did seem
to have the best time, and were generous in their sing-alongs.  had a few
moments of panic with the mash of people during ig.  two people got
passed over the baricade where we were, due to not being able to handle
the mash.  at the end of ig one of our group was able to go over the
baricade to get out.  we had to push our way out through the masses as we
were scared by the sarah surge that followed ig. didn't think we could
handle it, as there had already been some hairy scary moments with the
crowd.  sarah did ask people in front if they were ok and not getting
squished too much.  we saw her set from the back of the stadium, and it
was cool to be able to see the lights for her show from a distance.
would have loved to be closer for byt at the encore, but we had binocs
and saw enough.  jewel joined in for this as she had on ctf.

the venue itself was great.  brought our own food, and water, and bought
only the cool ig hat!  sue has been wanting an ig hat for years.  not
sure if we would go to lilith again, but would definitely stay back from
the mash if we did.  still are drying out from it all.

wow-- where to start. i made friends with some women from vancouver &
went to lf with them. we got there early, so we got great positions in
front of the main stage.
i snuck my recorder in & have boots of lisa loeb, paula cole (who is
very hot live, btw), shawn colvin, our beloved ig, & vancouver's beloved
sarah mclachlan. i haven't listened to them all yet, just a little bit
of each to check for sound quality (which, much to my delight is really
good, imho). i have a feeling that people will want some of these &
being new to these parts i'm not sure how to go about setting up a tape
tree, tho there's probably something in the faq about it.

anyhooo-- my review...
yes, it rained, & drizzled, & stopped, & drizzled, & rained, & stopped,
& poured, & ...
the only performer i noticed walking around amongst the 20,000+ soaked
hoi polloi was sarah's husband, ash. (and only because someone i was
with pointed him out). since the weather was so lousy, i kind of doubt
any of the singers were out in the muck.

i saw oh susanna - liked her alot, good guitar player, nice voice,
vaguely political. if you ever see that she's playing near you - check
her out.
i also liked the other smaller stage performers i saw-- with one
noteworthy exception. my apologies to any of her fans-- but i hated abra
moore. she can't sing, her lyrics were juvenile, & i got a headache
listening to her (actually took tylenol during her set & walked away to
get food).

silly me - i never heard that the performers would be at the record
booth til after the main stage had started. so, i decided to skip it &
just try to get some decent tapes.

main stage:
i was impressed with lisa loeb. i was never really much of a fan until i
saw her here. she also seems like a sweet & genuine soul. before she
came out there were problems with people closest to the stage standing,
while the rest of us were still sitting, that people began yelling &
chanting "sit down! sit down!" so lisa talked to the crowd and
eventually asked the ones standing to sit. and they did! she was very
cool. shawn colvin came out to do one song with her.

after lisa loeb's set, everyone stood up to stretch their legs,
bathroom, etc, because mary jane lamond played on the second stage,
which was set up right next to the main stage (stage right side - or amy
side for you non-theatre types). anyway, after that it was standing room
only as people who got there later shoved and pushed their way to the
front (or as close as it was possible to get). basically, situation
normal for every general admission-no seats venue concert i have ever
attended. sardine city.

sorry, i don't have set lists-- but i had enough problems trying to
change tapes & keep my recorder dry in the rain. :o)

next was paula cole, whoa! she was wearing a skintight, mini, black,
stretch-lace dress with a flesh colored liner and black leggings/tights.
at one point during her set she thanked the crowd for being so great. i
believe that someone yelled back "thank you for wearing that dress!" - i
haven't listened to the tape yet, but i believe that the voice (female)
will probably be very loud because she was very close to the mic...so
close that... okay... it was me. ;o) paula was a wild woman on stage.
she strutted her stuff & posed & the crowd loved it & she just got even
more into it.

next was shawn colvin, who, contrary to recent colvinwear sightings was
wearing a nice, black, mini-dress & black tights. she looked great &
sounded great. i love shawn & have a t-shirt she signed for me the last
time she played at the beacon in nyc feb. 27, '97. i think she had a
hard act to follow after paula cole's intensity. so, the crowd didn't
really get into her mellower music until "sunny", then everyone sang
along.

then the girls came out. i feel silly-- but i can't even remember what
they were wearing. it was hard trying *not* to sing along, but i really
wanted to get a decent boot. especially, after i got the recorder turned
on late after they got on stage & was still fumbling with the mic when
they started the first song - because the sky opened up & it started to
pour before they started & i was trying to change tapes in the dark in
the pouring rain & desperately trying to keep it all dry. sorry, enough
excuses. i've actually just started listening to the tape as i write
this. amy started by saying "we're the indigo girls & this is the billy
tipton memorial quartet."  after they finished their first song, shed
your skin, amy said "i'm sorry you guys are getting wet!"  ;o)  god,
it's embarrassing listening to your own voice. unfortunately, during
emily's "this is a love song, a little ditty" - ("power of two") there
were idiot f__cking morons near me who insisted on talking thru the
whole song, f_ck them! more f__cking morons during amy's rant during
"scooter boys". though truth be told, i did my fair share of f__cking
moron talking [tho not during crucial moments :o) ] "acadian driftwood"
with a&e, lisa, shawn & sarah was sweet & appropriate for the place &
venue. "the water is wide" harmony with shawn, sarah, a&e was beautiful
- tho marred a couple of times by talkers. oh, man "closer to fine" got
cut off during emily's first verse when the tape changed sides (right
before "darkness has..." & picked up during sarah's verse "i sailed my
ship to [sic] safety til i sank it" -- damn, damn, damn. well, as
humbling & humiliating as it is to admit it - my ig boot is probably
about average, as ig boots go  :o(  although the sound quality is good &
you can't tell that it's pouring rain during their whole set. c'est la
vie. my memory of it tho was wonderful. what i thought was especially
great was amy's huge smile & obvious delight-- every time sarah started
to sing & when she first came on stage during ig's set - the vancouver
crowd went nuts.

sarah, hometown girl, by way of halifax, was sweet & lovely & gracious &
grateful for the crowd's reception & appeciation. she did a nice mix of
old songs & new ones. she is always great live & i think she really
responded *her* crowd.
then, as expected, everyone came on stage for "big yellow taxi".
afterward - hugs among the performers. and then it was over.

then the hard part started, 20,000 wet people trying to get to a few
narrow staircases to the stands & finally to the exits - not a fun way
to end such a great (tho damp) evening.

i will add one addendum without mentioning any specifics which might be
erroneously taken to be a violation of faq code 4.2.7 (ig privacy)

i had a close encounter with emily! she was on my plane, which seemed to
be full of middle aged & elderly folks. i'm sure i was the only one who
recognized her. anyway, she got on after i was already seated. i was so
surprised to see her that i didn't say anything when she went by with
her guitar carry-on. apparently the overheads near her seat were full,
so she had to come forward again to find a bin for her guitar - the
flight attendant found space. this time when she walked by i said, "you
were great last night." she was gracious and said, "thanks, it's too bad
that was the last one. goin' home." then she went down the isle to her
seat. i managed to resist all manner of temptation by never walking by
her seat, waiting to see her again after we got off the plane, or
waiting to see her at baggage claim. i totally left her alone after that
one little verbal exchange. i'm sure she expected me to bother her again
at some point. i just hope she appreciated, even a little bit, the
tremendous amount of self control it took for me not to see her again
during and after the flight.

please no one try to tell me that i am evil & have violated the faq.
i will shred to pieces anyone who does.
i make no apologies for including my personal encounter with emily.
to me it was a wonderful cherry on top of the whipped cream (no puns
intended or should be inferred) of my sundae of my vancouver lilith fair
sunday.

it's off his album "everybody knows this is nowhere", but i am not
certain. if you are unfamiliar with neil young check out some of his
material (ebktin, live rust, harvest, harvest moon, decade... are good
starting points). amy ray must like him because at most of the concerts
i have been to she sings a neil young song..

just writing to say that i am signing off the list today, but will have

since every one else does this, then i figured i would too.

she is not a folk singer, she is not a rock-n-roll singer. she can't be classified as country, but she's not really alternative either. she is mary cutrufello from houston, tx. (via ct, a harvard grad). she is the first black female artist to put country lyrics with a rock-n-roll/alternative guitar sound, although she does have some pure downright country songs. she played in nashville last night in front of a crowd of about 50-75 at 12th & porter and gave those nashvillians something to chew on.

i was turned on to mary in 1996 by a friend and he convinced me to go see her in dallas and i was hooked. she rocks!!! she plays all her own electric guitar riffs and writes most, if not all of her own songs. i was blown away again!! her cd is not available through stores but you can write to her at pridesworn@aol.com and she will let you know how to get it and she can also send you her tour dates. if she comes to your area, i would definitely recommend checking out mary if you want to experience some "tear in my beer" good ole country/rock. you go mary!!

i had to respond to this cause we had a funny story in relation to that

the second night of the tour here in austin, texas, i saw a girl wearing that

down, i went up to her and asked her where she got it. she said it was from
their acoustic tour. i asked how much she paid for it. she told me $25.00.
so, i said i have to have it. what would i have to do to buy it off you? she
said, what are you serious? i said yea, my g/f will have to have it. her mom
was with her and her mom was kinda looking at me funny, but was kinda nodding
like go ahead. so she said ok $25.00. i said can you come show my g/f? she
laughed and said sure. so i brought her to my g/fs seat and said look!!! she
freaked out and was like oh my god. she thought i was just showing her not
planning to strip the poor girl of her clothing. after about 10 minutes of
arguing with my g/f about taking the shirt right off the girls back, my g/f
said fine, if she's willing, then buy it from her. the girl came back over
and chelle pulled out a $50 and a $20. she told the girl we'll have to go get
change. we turned around and the line was long and the show was about to
start, so the girl said just give me a $20. that was fine with her. so,
(here's ya'lls anticipation building part....) she put on the new tour shirt
she had bought, and slipped the old one out of the sleeves. and we were the
proud owners of the shirt.

there's my story for the day.

well, i have now listened to all of the boots i made in vancouver. for
those interested-- my highly personal and subjective opinions & reviews:

i discussed ig in my original post re: wed 27 aug 1:48 -0400: vancouver
lf & boots- very long. the gist of it was that it was okay, but not as
good as i had hoped (basically because of talkers).

the sarah boot is the best one. the vancouver crowd was appropriately
respectful of their sarah, so there was very little talking. actually,
it was nearly impossible to talk because the audio sound level during
her set was *extremely* loud.

shawn, poor shawn, i'm so sorry that it sounds like everyone around me
was talking almost non-stop during your set. the music sound level is
really good-- as it is on all the boots-- the differences are the
relative amount & loudness of the *peoplenoize*. and shawn's tape has
the most *peoplenoize*.

i am embarrassed and humbled by having to admit that i personally did
more talking, & permitted the friends i was with to do more talking,
than i ever have before, at a concert which i was actively trying to
tape. :o(

paula's tape is pretty good, there's more noise during her first few
songs-- before she got people to really start paying attention. then the
crowd seemed to do less talking.

now, the bad news. <ugh> there is *no* lisa loeb boot. she was supposed
to be on tape 1, side a & paula on side b. well, paula is on side b, but
side a is completely blank. the only thing i can think of is that i
royally f__cked up & didn't push the record button hard enough (even tho
i always looked to make sure that the led said "rec"). or else i somehow
bumped the panel while putting the recorder in the bag (to keep it dry).
whatever, i messed up, and i'm sorry to anyone who specifically wanted
lisa loeb.

i mentioned in the previous post that i checked each tape just to listen
for sound quality. sarah, ig, & shawn each had their own 90 min tape,
because i figured they would play 45 min. ig & sarah went a little over
& shawn played about 40, as did paula (& lisa too). late sunday night i
only checked side b of tape 1. not that it would have made a difference
at that point-- i just wouldn't have told the list that i had lisa. this
is just a very long winded apology for perhaps getting someone's hopes
up unnecessarily.

so, that's my subjective review of my vancouver boots.
basically-- as i mentioned before, the sound quality is actually quite
good on the music side of the equation. the other side of that equation
(which i previously referred to as "idiot f__cking morons" - and i now
must include myself in that group - aka: talkers) is the changing
variable.

btw-- to anyone who attended the show or has read & has access to a
published review. i noticed that someone else posted that jewel was
onstage for ctf & big yellow taxi-- i was fairly close to the stage & i
don't remember seeing jewel up there-- just dayna manning, tara maclean,
mary jane lamond, abra moore, & susanna(oh). if anyone knows for sure
that jewel was there i'd love to see something about it-- if accessible
on the web. thanks.

....being a big neil fan and an even bigger ig fan, i was just
wondering if anyone noticed that there seems to be a
connection between the two.....

when i 1st saw ig live in '89 they were opening up for neil....
they (and others eg k.hall/m.malone) seem to always squeeze
a neil homage in their performances...whether it's a song
(down by the river/southern man/others) or a t-shirt
(mm's 'tonight's the night' t) or just a neil-type rhythm,
riff or sound........
.....is this because they're just fans of his? or did he do
something special by letting ig open for him? or am i

has stuff like candles, sheets, etc, etc.  i've heard this mentioned a
few times in passing from other people, but if it actually existed i
think i would have heard more about it by now.  anyway, i know if it
does exist, someone one here will know about it.  i'm not talking about
rdr or the flying biscuit either.  for those of you who are atlantans,
some one said it was in virginia highlands near little five or

"secretive life". i didn't know who she was but wanted to find out more
about her because i really liked what i was hearing. anyway, i never saw
the beginning of the clip and never saw anything about a movie called
"secretive life". the other night, "harriet the spy" was on hbo or
showtime and i watched it and lo & behold, ..... at the absolute end of
the movie, ... while the credits are rolling, ... jill sobule sings
"secretive life". i had to order the soundtrack cd :) does anyone have a
copy of the promo by any chance?

forgive me if this is merely a rerun that i missed the first time, but i
just saw a countdown of the top 10 female artists' videos on vh1's route
97 which was shot in camden, nj during the lilith fair show.  this show
didn't include ig but in between some of the videos there are some clips
from the performances, as well as couple of very slow interviews with
fiona apple, joan osborne and a great moment where sarah m. begins to gag
when the interviewer notes alannis morisett's 14 million albums sold.  i
wonder what *that* means!  actually i'm not really wondering too much
'cause she did just about the same thing in response to mariah carey's
hefty record sales. it reminded me of something amy might do.  so there's
the only bit igc here for you all.  sorry if i'm just repeating old
info...

i dont know if he gave them some kind of big time break or anything, but i do
know they sure sound like huge fans in the little notes they wrote about each
track on 1200 curfews.

i think they also might have played a benefit concert he does out on the west
coast, called the bridge something or other, to raise money for autism, which
i believe one and maybe two of his kids have. i could be wrong about them
playing that, but i vaguely recall reading that in rolling stone, back when i
used to read rolling stone. anybody else know?

a lot of post-neil's-heyday rockers pay homage to the man -- pearl jam, etc.
-- because not only is he a musical visionary -- he was doing grunge in the
70s and is regarded as the godfather of it -- but he continually re-invented
himself, and he really never sold out, releasing experimental totally out of
character records that flopped at the cash register for the most part such as
neil young and the shocking pinks -- kinda rockabilly -- and a weird techno
album called trans. he battled his record company a lot for creative freedom,
and i think at one point they got into some legal hassles because the record
company said he was making albums (yes, they were albums back then :) showing
my age.) they deemed "not marketable." i recently heard or read an emily
interview somewhere, and she talked about their record company and how they
don't pressure them now, but how one time they asked them to put a certain
cover on an album so it'd be more marketable. she said "we got so mad, they
never asked us again." neil young would like that.

if you haven't checked out neil yet, you might like to. if you dig the amy
sound more -- especially the touch me fall/shaming of the sun amy -- check
out some of his albums by neil young and crazy horse. live rust would be
good.

if you are more an emily fan check out harvest moon -- a later release -- or
harvest or after the gold rush, which features "only love can break your
heart," the one song in the world i would most like to see the indigo girls
cover. (amy on lead vocal, but emily doing a verse or two also) if you like
that stuff and want more at an economical price, get decade, a three disc
retrospective, which includes hurricane, my second choice for a girls cover,
very amyesque, so she'd have to sing lead again. or for a real bargain
sampler, try neil young unplugged.

sorry to be so windy, but neil is right up there with the girls on my
turntable, and he really does rule!

okay.

the bridge school benefit is a yearly event that i have attended the last
several years. it's always at shorline ampitheatre, in mountainview, ca.
the benefit, well....benefits the bridge school, which is a very special
school for very special kids. these are kids who's needs cannot or will not
be met by the state's educational system, so mr.young and his wife started
their own school (good for them, damnit!). one of their kids has (unless i
am horribly mistaken) cerebral palsy. the school is located in the bay
area, and is non-profit. so every year they hold this concert, and they put
kids from the school, parents and teachers in the best seats in the
house......right on the stage, just behind the performers. it's kind of the
concert to see and be seen at in the bay area's elite circles, not to
mention usually one hell of a concert. my most memorable attendance (here
comes that igc i promised you) was in 1994. a friend and i had recieved two
tickets as a gift from a school mate at the prestigious*rolling eyes* san
joiquin delta junior college, because our friend's room mate had crashed
her car attempting to drive them home, and then the room mates b/f crashed
his car on his way to pick her up from the hospital. so the tickets were
clearly cursed, but we didn't care. that evening's bill was ministry, pete
droge, mazzy star (i swear to amy that hope sandoval sniffed her pits
onstage, honest to emily, i am not lying), pearl jam, tom petty, indigo
girls, and of course, neil young. i had a really cool bracelet that was a
black leather thong with red, orange, yellow beads, then a silver bead,
then green, blue purple. very cool, very pretty, and i decided that one of
the ig really needed to have it. i tried to get close enough to toss it
onstage, but was stopped by a security guy. when i asked what he would do
if i just ignored him, he kind of sized me up for a second and then told me
that they didn't pay him enough to stop me. so up i went, took aim, and let
it fly. another security guy tried to grab it out of the air, but it sailed
just inches from his fingertips. i was victorious over the evil security
man! after an amazing set, emily walked over, picked it up and put it in
her pocket. i was entirely jazzed, as you can imagine. i spent just about
the rest of the concert trying to get backstage, so a&e could autograph my
jacket, but alas, a roadie came out specifically to tell me that they had
already gone back to the hotel. my friend and i left, disheartened, but
still buzzed from the concert. well, we got into a huge wreck on the way
home, and i temporarily lost the use of my right leg as the result of my
truck doing barrel rolls down a 75 foot embankment at upwards of 75 mph.
don't worry, i'm okay now. *smile* the strange thing is, a strange girl at
the concert told me that making an offering of my bracelet to a&e, was good
karma, and some kind of blessing. i blew her off, but she was right. the
sherriff's officer that responded to our wreck was the twin brother of a
city police officer in my hometown whom i am quite close to. the ambulance
driver had tickets to the concert, but couldn't attend because almost
everyone else had called in sick.the elderly woman that stopped to call 911
and help us worked in the same office building as my uncle......the odd
coincidences were just too many to count. so there. i have told you about
the bridge school, a cool indigo moment, and the oddest thing to ever
happen to me, all in one shot. kinda cool, huh?

hey everyone,

i just realised that the week is up, which means that it's now
officially "crazy game week". yeah. :)

of course, that doesn't mean that you can't all still talk about
"strange fire" if you feel like it, especially since we had that
little interruption with the list downtime. in fact if someone
could explain to me in plain english just what that bible
passage with the strange fire reference meant, i'd be a much
more enlightened soul i'm sure.

but anyway, let me start the ball rolling with "crazy game":

i like this song, i really do.  i don't think it's exactly the
deepest thing emily ever wrote, but it's catchy and it's nice
and it's warm and fuzzy.  i also like the way amy waves her
hands around when she's singing without a guitar.  call me
superficial, but that's part of the reason why i like "crazy
game". :)  anyway.  i'm sure there are people out there with
much more meaningful takes on the song than this...

hi out there...i'm new to the list (just signed up on monday) but have
really been enjoying watching/listening to the rest of you.  what an
interesting bunch "we" are. i recently saw ig at lilith in milwaukee and
would dearly love to acquire a tape of the show, if anyone has one.

the most memorable concert experiences of my life.  nothing like an
intimate little sing-a-long with 20,000 of your closest friends, all of
whom appear to know every word to every ig song.
it's so nice to have found this comfortable place to kick back with
others of similar mind - and btw i've really enjoyed the neil young
discussions as i'm a fan of his from all the waaaay back - i date myself
here - to the days of the release of  after the gold rush.
he has, by the way, two children with cerebral palsy, for those who care
to know such things.

alright, alright! i'm sorry for asking about emily's gf!! won't happen
again.

this isn't really an interp of the song, but it does pretain to cg, so i
thought i'd mention it during its run as song of the week.
when i first heard the song (i think it was when i saw live at the uptown
for the first time) i was positive it was a cover and some other performer
had written it. it sounded incredibly familiar, and i kept thinking it had
been some jazz (or similar genre) hit from a long time ago. i can't think
where i'd ever have heard crazy game before in my life, seeing as it's not a
very mainstream song, even for ig, but i swore i had.
when i played it for my dad, he had the same reaction and this is a man who
didn't even recognize closer to fine or galileo!
i still haven't figured out what song i'm comparing/confusing cg with, but
it's really odd. just wondering if anyone else had this experience.

i got the same feeling from this song when i first heard it, but i thought

crazy game is special to me (& one of my ig favs) because as corny as it
sounds - it was my first *song* with someone (a long time ago now).
anyway *we* were at a party , the lights were low, so i put on crazy
game to repeat a few times... here comes the point of all this...
someone said, "hey, i like cole porter too... but can't we play the rest
of the album?" i told her it wasn't cole porter, but ig, and she
wouldn't believe that emily had written it til i showed her the album

question: i've been thinking about purchasing 1200 curfews, but as its

clearly, his rough/mellow influence has flavored a lot of modern music. i

different stages - aug 29- sept 1. music starts around noon and goes

so i was watching the ppv special for the first time today (thank you chris
b.!), and if they ever make a movie of the life story of danielle howle, lili
taylor will definitely play the lead - talk about separated at birth!  i
couldn't believe it!  so it got me thinking, when they make ig: the movie,
who will play a & e?  i actually haven't been able to come up with any good
answers.  okay, i did think of janeane garofolo for amy, but nobody has come
to mind for emily.  this is incredibly silly, but i've been thinking about it
all day.  any ideas?

i have been away from my email for most of the last week... my apologies
to those who have written and not yet received a personal reply from me,
but i'm slowly catching up with my email <sigh>.

1.  i receive 200-400 email messages each day, and i cannot give them
     all equal priority... some email i filter to special mail-folders
     to which i have assigned special priority....

therefore

--> if you send me email re: the berkeley boots, *please* include the
two words 'berkeley boots' in the subject line so my mail-reader
will filter your message into my 'berkeley boots' mail-folder...

these days, i read this folder first!

yes, spelling counts! my mail-reader looks for 'berkeley boots'...
uppercase/lowercase is irrelevant, but spelling must be correct.

2. all boots i have mailed have included a j-card liner with setlist
and notes about the show...

     however, all sat shows (05 july) were mailed with a j-card liner
     which is incorrect... it states leeds starts side-2, whereas it
     really *ends* side-1.

     all tapes i mailed *before* this tuesday (26 aug) have an incorrect
     liner for the sat show... all tapes i mailed tuesday or later have
     a corrected liner.

     i have both j-card liners available as bitmap (.bmp) attachments
     and can send it to you via email (this assumes you have software,
     [eg. paintbrush in windows) which can convert bitmap attachments).

--> if you would like a corrected j-card for the sat show, please send
me email requesting it:

3.  if your branch is unable to make photocopies of the j-card liners
     for your berkeley boot tapes, and you would like me to send you a
     copy of each as an attachment, please send me email requesting them.

4.  i will soon have some branches in canada... this should make it
     easier for those of you living in canada to request copies via
     'blanks and sase'... you will no longer have to arrange special
     payment on your sase for returning tapes across an international
     border... stay tuned for more info.

5.  i have made at least two-dozen complete sets of the two berkeley
     shows, and most have been mailed... more will be mailed tomorrow
     (friday) and this weekend (saturday).

     i have listened to both shows so many times i think i know every
     guitar stroke and every punch line of both shows, yet they still
     give me goosebumps when i listen... a good sign. :)

6.  many thanks to all of you who have written me privately to comment
     on how much you're enjoying these boots... the shows were fantastic,
     and i was lucky to avoid the most common boot problems.

     i know at least 4 other people who booted these shows, and all of us
     had problems of some kind... as those of you who have tried booting
     shows already know, booting can be a very unpredictable and humbling
     experience... every one of us at berkeley experienced one or more of
     the following problems:

       a. noisy fans near us
       b. malfunctioning equipment
       c. tape blanks too short for the whole show
       d. problems anticipating when to turn over the tape
       e. the incredible *heat* during sunday's show, which damaged our
          equipment and/or our tapes
       f. wind blowing against our mic's, causing low rustling sounds
          during some of the quiet passages

i was lucky that i was able to anticipate/control all but 'f' above.

7. many many thanks to all those who have volunteered to be branches.

     i know some of you have gotten many requests... for those of you
     who are 'leaves' on this tapetree and are awaiting copies from
     branches, please remember that each complete set of two tapes will
     require your branch to spend four hours of taping time (assuming
     they are *not* using high-speed dubbing)... it is highly unlikely
     a branch can make more than one set-per-day... please be patient.

8. i will post later an updated tree structure with canadian branches.

i didn't see anything about it in the last digest i received, but for those
of you who don't know, the boone, nc hte show sold out in minutes.  i hit re-
dial constantly for 25 minutes this morning until the number finally rang
through.  the friendly voice on the other end informed me that that show had
already sold out.  hope someone on this list was lucky enough to get through
this morning before they sold out.

which brings me to my next question: does anyone know if the blacksburg, va
show is sold out? if not, could someone who knows the ticket ordering phone
number please e-mail me privately?

pretty darn smart so you would be the folks to ask. a friend and i are
visiting the boston and providence area and we were wondering if there are

17 and my friend is18 years of age so we can't get into any bars (or can we?.
