mime-version: 1.0

okay, i was pounding away at ticketmaster looking for some clue about the
rumored las vegas show with ig and bonnie raitt and i actually found the
following in the on-sales section:

on sale 8/28/97 (all times local)

10:00 am no nukes benefit, hospitality point / popsite, san diego,9/29/97
,"$7.50$35.00$75.00"

on sale 8/30/97 (all times local)

12:00 pm no nukes benefit, joint / hard rock hotel, las vegas,9/30/97
,"$35.00$50.00$65.0"

{notice the first one supposedly went on sale today (thursday)

so i tried looking under actual concerts and this confirming entry is
listed under "b" for bonnie...

a no nukes benefit
bonnie,jackson and john
stop ward valley
gte summerpops@hospitality      [<---- this is the san diego venue above]
rain or shine/no beverages
mon sept 29,1997 7:00pm

    charge-by-phone: (619) 220-8497 [<-- 9am - 9pm, i tried at 9:30]
    ticket center information

-----------------------------------

my conclusions:
1. this is the show in question - there aren't going to be 2 no nukes
shows in vegas on 9/30

2. bonnie raitt will be in san diego and las vegas

3. it's not at all clear that ig will be in either san diego or las
vegas.  and who is "john"?

4. no nukes is fine, but i'd like to save just one for ticketmaster
headquarters.

i know absolutely nothing else.  don't even ask.

umm, okay maybe melissa could do amy, but joni for emily?!?  she's older,
and though she sings beautifully, she's simply not errr (searching for pc

also, to anyone on the list who might care, i'll be switching over to my

mime-version: 1.0

i've probably sent a record for nigc in 24 hrs - but they're not working
this week (as least as far as scheduled live perfs go) so...

a while back [sat, 16 aug 12:13 -0400] i posted specific tour info for
what will be nanci griffith's last, yes *last*, tour before she retires
from performing. several people then e-mailed me for more info:

nanci will supposedly be performing on the west coast in nov. no dates
have yet been set.

the tentative *last, last tour date* is "on or about nov 25."

okay... i decided to add this so i could claim *sillyigc*...

"ig: the movie" - starring: jennifer jason leigh (w brn hair) - amy
                            mare winningham (w strbry/blnd) - emily

hey... it might not be that silly... it could happen...
if ig stay together another 16-17 years (til they're over 50)...

(note: never check your e-mail if you need to get up in the middle of
the night)

okay... i'm going back to bed & dream sweet indigo dreams...  |o)

maybe i should have spelled out the subtlety for non-cinophiles:

how i thought of leigh & winningham-- they starred together as sisters
in "georgia" - mare played a talented singer/songwriter & leigh was her
jealous n'er do well younger sister.

mary chapin carpenter, bonnie raitt, and john trudell.  no chance of ig
joining them as they are in jacksonville that night.

i watched the sb - pissed off amy ray part again, and again, ang adain,
gand adaing, and againand......until i souldn't cpeak, or couldn't speak,
......
well, anyway, she turned towards the side of the stage and starting
walking not straight over to the side, but a little towards her amp, or
maybe someone else's amp.....but i assume it wouldn't be emily's main
amp cause that would be near sara lee on the other side of the stage.
so, after that i think she said "turn (my, the, amp) down, down"  (it looks
really funny in slow mo cause her face gets real crinkled up when she
says the first down, cause shes obviously not that happy)  i might be off
by a few words, but my conclusion is either her guitar or her vocals.

1.  i think acoustic guitars aren't supposed to be that loud with a full
electric setup and electric lead guitar (or is it rhythm?)
2.  i think also that her vocals were a lot louder than emily's the first
verse

of course, i would like to get a definitve answer, but she spoke soooooo
fast to her sound guy.....i was thinking "how the heck could someone
understand her when you couldn't here an ambulance pass by?"  but
then again, amy ain't no spring chicken as far as live performances go
(and es of course too!)  (ps - this has nothing to do with her weight,
even though spring chickens are known to have a few uneeded love
handle feathers)
maybe i'll have to listen to the sound levels closer to reallllly tell - or then
again - do i have anything else to do in my life - no!  of course not!!!!,
i'll find this out if it's the last thing i'm gonna do!!!!!
(settle down beavis - vuja-de!!!)

.........................................
and on a side note regarding spring chickens - oops! - i mean the uk,
------ who on the list lives in the uk and know of places to go in london,
bath, & cardiff.....
this is rather open-ended, but hey - :p

when 1200 curfews came out i walked 2 miles (each way) from work during
my lunch hour to purchase this cd. i then put the headphones on at my
desk and listened to both discs while working (or at least attempting
to). from the first chords of joking i *knew* this was going to be a
great cd. imho, this is the best live album any band has ever produced.
really great renditions of songs we all know and love. i listened to
1200 curfews constantly, like every day, for the first 8 months or so
that i had it. after 2 years i am down to listening to it about 1 time
per week. not too bad, considering i have about 300 cds, about 500
albums (vinyl) and about 100 tapes. i paid $25 for 1200 curfews and it
has been well worth the price.

just a little fyi....and imho about the ig !!!!!!!

1200 curfews was my last album (besides sots), and one of my
favorites, but not my favorite ig album....

my first album i got by them was rop and that is still probably my favorite
by them.  everything on it is just done so well, and really can make you
cry or make you get up and dance at any moment.   running a close
second is so - which just blew me away when it first came out and
turned me into a huge fan.... (sots is a close third btw)   also, the
self-titled album is great and many songs from sf and nis are sooooo
good.....even -get on the bus y'all- is a great album - really good mix of
music and awesome, really into it crowd for those takes....(intimate too)

basically what i'm saying - the point that is - is that 1200 curfews for me
was like a cherry on top, or icing on the cake that just added to my
ig-fan-crazy-whooohooooing.....  but i really fell for a+e by listening to all
their albums time after time after time....  in some regards, the album cuts
are better versions, and have more intensity, and sound better but when
you hear songs live after hearing them a lot and being real familiar with
them - that's the best thing in the world - imho....<ahhhhh><angelic
chorus>
so 1200c was a perfect ending to my ig listening at that time, and really
showed me how great they can be and how great a lot of songs can
sound or sounded live!!!!!
also, even though i don't deem it to be an indispensable ig album as far
as which ig album to get first (i see it as #3 or so), i do see it as a *must
have* as far as all albums go....!

so, as far as desert island discs go, that might have to be one of them,
b/c of the awesome live aspect and great/huge/varied song selection
throughout.....

ok, maybe this wasn't .02, maybe around $1.48...... :)

hey everyone,
thanks to everyone who responded to my request for
bootlegs, i'm impressed at everyone's kindness.  but how
could amy and emily fans not be extremely cool? i have a
few things to say:
1. anybody have info for the honor the earth tour stop in
d.c.? i've been periodically checking the honor the earth
web site, but nothing's there.
2. was anybody at the lilith fair in columbus, ohio?  i'm
just wondering if anybody thought that the indigo base
there was curiously lacking.  i was in the back of the
pavilion and everyone around me was sitting down during the
girls' set.  i was the only person for many rows around
standing up and singing at the top of my lungs.  i'm sure
everyone enjoyed my little concert for them...i did get a
few strange looks. during galileo, emily seemed kind of
nervous that people wouldn't know the part that she usually
lets the audience sing, saying "do y'all know this part?"
the people near me definitely didn't.
3. since i just joined the list, i'm not sure if anyone has
talked about this yet, but did anyone else see amy
listening to the performers on the village and second
stages at the l.f.?  she was just in the crowd watching
michelle malone in columbus (more proof that they didn't
have too many fans there, i seemed to be the only one to
recognize her...) and then was sitting on the lawn watching
madeleine peyroux.  i'm just surprised that she would
appear like that, i guess she has enough confidence that
her fans would be polite enough not to mob her, which i'm
glad to say was mostly true.  i must admit, though, i was
sitting next to her on the lawn and i casually scooted over
so i was three or four feet away during the 50 minute set.
is this a topic i'm allowed to talk about?
4. one more random thing...for all you ani fans out there,
have you listened to the very end of the second disc where
ani and i guess andy stochansky are talking about the born
again christians at some open mike night they went to? i
was rolling on the floor, it's hilarious, everyone should
listen to it.

okay, that's all.

the answer to your question is simple:
if you are truly devoted ig fan, as some of out here in listland
are, you should own all ig albums, regardless of the hefty pricetag.

     just my humble ig opinion.

question: i've been thinking about purchasing 1200 curfews, but as its
pricetag is hefty and my wallet is not i'm wondering if people could
give me their opinions about it.
also, those who love the water is wide might enjoy listening to james
taylor's version of this song on new moon shine.  it's a fine, fine
version.

got a newsletter in the mail today from the honor the earth org. here's
the igc:

(reprinted without permission)

"announcing the 1997 indigo girls honor the earth tour"

(a voice for the earth and those who are not heard)

this powerful 21 stop concert tour will advocate, gather support and
raise money for native peoples on the front lines of environmental
protection.

the honor the earth tour hopes to reach more than 100,000 music fans and
internet users and raise more than $200,000 in one month - all to benefit
and forward the work of grassroots native environmental groups. this
year's tour will focus on the national watershed issue of nuclear waste
storage on native lands. the tour will stop in a host of east coast
communities where nuclear utilities are located to garner opposition to
plans for moving high level radioactive waste to native communities in
the west. we will deliver a clear, moving message from native peoples
targeted and impacted by the nuclear industry - stop the deadly
production of nuclear waste and keep it off native lands.

among the impacted communities and grassroots groups the tour will
benefit are:

citizen alert native american program - ny: a western shoshone led group
organizing to prevent their sacred yucca mountain from becoming the
nation's dumping ground for nuclear waste.

ohngo guadadeh devia - ut: a grassroots reservation-based group
organizing to prevent a consortium of utilities from leasing reservation
land for an independent nuclear waste dump.

honor the earth will couple it's nuclear waste focus with work to benefit
the efforts of native environmental groups along the tour route, including:

first environmental project - mohawk nation of akwesasne, ny: for work to
hold general motors and the epa accountable for clean up of toxic pcb
contamination of the lands and rivers.

the penobscot nation and irate (indians resisting against tribal
extermination) - me: for work to pressure the lincoln pulp and paper mill
to institute chlorine free technology and stop poisoning their lands with
dioxin.

eastern cherokee defense league - nc: for work to pressure the champion
mill to institute chlorine free technology and put an end to dioxin
contamination of their ancestral lands.

traditional seminole nation - fl: for work to protect their way of life
and homelands in the florida everglades.

fort belknap community - mt: for work to stop cyanide heap leach gold
mining by pegasus gold in their sacred little rocky mountains.

buffalo nation - mt: to halt yellowstone park's slaughter of buffalo, a
sacred relation of great plains indigenous peoples and a national treasure.

broadcast on the internet

you can travel with the honor the earth tour by tuning into our tour
internet broadcasts! you'll get to come behind the scenes and join our
press conferences and talking circles, be there for on the spot coverage
of local issues and take part in the excitement of the concerts.

our 1997 broadcasts mark the launch of honor the earth radio on the world
wide web - a tool for native peoples to report on their own struggles to
a world wide audience in their own voice. this year we have already
broadcast keynote speakers from the indigenous women's network and
indigenous environmental network's annual gatherings, and soon will
broadcast segments of the seventh generation fund's annual sustainable
communities symposium.

honor the earth's internet broadcasts are made possible through generous
in-kind support of monsterbit media, a cutting edge austin-based internet
communications company.

check the honor the earth web site at www.honorearth.com for specific
instructions to download the honor the earth campaign tour broadcasts.

ooh, not bad. of course, neve would have to cut her hair, but still.
actually, how about neve and claire for the "young ig" and jennifer
jason leigh and mare winningham<i didn't spell that right, did i?> for
the present day girls?

thanks to ann m labeck, we all have the address of the indigo girls fan
club.  yes, it is the same address that is given on the liner notes in
each cd (probably records too).  i've sent e-mail to the address with
ann's suggested mention of the words "merchandise" and "purchase."
haven't heard anything yet.  it's been a few day.

however, thanks to erin brown of the list, i will soon have the tee shirt
i needed.

this tour date intrigues me:
september 28: traditional seminole nation, fl

i know it's probably too much to hope that i'd be able to see them two nights
in a row, but does anyone in south florida know if this show will be out on
the seminole reservation on alligator alley and if there will be tickets
going on sale. it would be too cool.

on last year's honor tour, ig did a few dates on indian reservations
which were specifically for those living on the reservations.

i would hope that if ig choses to perform specifically for the native
people living in poverty on the parcels of land that the united states
gov't was so terribly generous enough to *give* them-- that non-natives
don't try to *crash the party*.

though i'm sure no one on the list would ever do something like that.

when i saw the notice about jt... i thought that he's the previous
generation's indigo boy...
and after all the talk lately about neil young's greatness & influence
on ig... i thought of neil as as indigo boy too.

james taylor = indigo boy emily
neil young = indigo boy amy

okay.  i knew i got yer attention with that :)  hey y'all, before i pack up
my schtuff up for school again, i'm gonna share a little gem i have that i
know none of ya out there have (well..uh, not this version at least ;))
okay, right now all i want to know is how many people out there are
interested, and who would wanna help me out as branch monkeys if i get
sheeetloads of responses to dub.  okay?  okay. :) this is what i got:

        gilliard auditorium, charelston s.c. --  february 17, 1995
on 2-90 minute tapes.   setlist:

cortez the killer (yeah, thats right..they opened with this :))
least complicated
3 hits
power of two
reunion
virginia woolf
dead man's hill
the wood song
fugitive
watershed
this train revised
language or the kiss
hand me downs
mystery
chickendude
galileo
jonas and ezekial
wild horses
touch me fall
closer to fine

comments:  this boot freakin rocks. high-energy concert.  its very clear,
recorded on a high-techy machine doo-hickey, and there is absolutely no
outbursts from folks sitting around that bars you from appreciating this
concert.  you can hear and understand all of the chit chat between amy and
emily...and there is a hella lot of that.  :)  imho, this boot is worth
"cortez the killer"...(rawkin rawkin rawkin with michele malone!)

another tidbit about this bootleg.  the day played this concert, amy and em
spent the day filming the power of two video.  the girls talk about their
video adventure before they play the song on this boot.

okay.  thats it.  if you are interested in this boot, lemme know.  if you
can be a branch monkey for this boot, lemme know...and if anyone else out
there has a boot of this same show, lemme know :)

now, now mel, dont get yourself all in a righteous uproar.  for  one thing, i
did not know those shows were non-commercial. if they are and  no tickets are
sold, no one said anything about gate crashing.

for another, the seminole reservation here is very open to the community.

and lastly, i'm a journalist who covers the county where the reservation is
located, so if the ig is doing any kind of show there as a benefit, it's a
great story and one i will try to get into the paper.

so, thanks for the info, but not the tone. relax.

well, i've e-mailed the fan club several times a while back and never
heard from them.  i've also ordered a hat and it wasn't showing up, so
i tried to call them, and they give you a recording and make you leave
a message, no matter what time.  then they don't call you back.  so,
i wrote to them again, asking about my hat, and it finally arrived,
although
they were out of the one i ordered and never let me know it.  they were
apologetic when they did finally send another hat, but it was way late.
plus,
within the last 6 months, i've gotten one mailing and it was a rather old
one.
i conclude that the fan club is not very responsive.  but y'all can pass
your
own judgements from what you've experienced or will experience.

i thought patti smith was incredible - a real performer. i'm not sure if
i'd ever buy any of her albums, but i would be happy to see her perform
again. on the other hand, the other opening band (on friday) the hectics
was not so great. after about two of their songs i was ready for
something else.
adding in my 2 pennies for patti today.

hi folks!

we were fortunate enough to see michelle malone play live in boise on 8/28!
it was her  last concert  for now and she said she was on her way
home....anyway, we left our wee town early thursday morning and drove 5
hours to boise.  we went to our campground, set up our tent, got ready and
then set about to find the bar she was playing in, neurolux.  as we pulled
into the parking lot, i saw a woman with a fed ex box under her arm and i
said to chris, "look, that's michelle!!"  she thought i was crazy at first
and we both decided we were letting the excitement get to our brains.  so
we went in, sat down, ordered beers and told the bartender how we'd driven
5 hours just to see mm, he said, "yeah, she's nice, you just missed her,
she was just here to drop off some cds, tshirts, and stuff..."    *oh well*

we went to eat, or rather, inhale, dinner and then ran back to
neurolux...cohen and denton opened the show (they were great, btw) and when
cohen broke his strings, michelle let him play her guitar ( the one with
the bugs bunny sticker, her other guitar had a psychedelic playboy bunny
wearing shades)!  they sounded even better!!

then michelle played....she is a goddess!!  after her first song, my green
thumb, i yelled out "medicated magdalene" and she said, "who said that"
(we were sitting right up front, center...there were only about 20 people
there, $3 admission!) and pointed at me and said, "you must be the ones who
drove from nevada, i'll play anything you want, i'll even buy you some
beers!!"  well, you can imagine how happy we were :))))))) so she played a
new song, it was really cool, she played her guitar and a harmonica....then
came "blue suede" and then "medicated magdalene" our two favorites off the
album.  i think everyone thought we were crazy because nobody else knew all
the lyrics and we were the only ones singing along and totally losing
ourselves in the ecstasy of it all...what a great show!!!!!

this is the set list (not in order):
my green thumb
grace (broke her string, threw down her pick...)
the new song, she didn't say the title
blue suede
medicated magdalene (our theme song for the little town we live in)
green
a sing a long...don't know the title, we're newly converted
a quiet song...sorry we feel like losers, "like a shaker, not a mover"

we had finished our pitcher of alaskan amber by the end of the show, chris
went to the car so that we could give her the sage we brought her...we
walked up to where she was sitting, gave her the sage and she smelled it
and said "mmmm, we burn this all the time..."  the rest of the conversation
was mostly fanatical ramblings on our part and humble astonishment (if not
fear) on her part :)  she signed our cd "to rachel and chris thank you sooo
much for driving all the way!  love, m. malone 8-18-97"   we didn't have
the heart to tell her that she was ten days behind :)  we shook her hand
and thanked her profusely... *sigh*

anyway, to make long story even longer, i got the pick she threw down.  it
says michelle malone and band de soleil in circular form with a squiggle
flower in the middle...we also got all the promotional posters they
had....more on this later....she was standing at the bar talking to the
manager, i respectfully interrupted and told michelle that we ordered all
her cds through daemon records and she said, "i bet she doesn't have drag
the river"  the manager said "i must have three in the back, i'll get her
one..."  i thanked them and left them alone for a while...but silly me, i
decided to interrupt once more just to ask michelle what a devil moon
is....she thought for a moment and then quietly told me that it was like
when bad things follow you around....and i said so it's like how your past
helps you understand your present, and she said yeah...i thanked her and
stopped bugging her after that....  the manager gave us the cd "relentless"
mm with drag the river...very cool of him....

it was a night we'll both remember forever :)))

we have three promotional "beneath the devil moon" posters that we'll send
to the first three people who privately email us.  they are double sided,
one side is orange, an enlarged photo of mm singing, it says michelle
malone in black letters and has a tiny picture of the cd on the lower right
hand corner.  the other side is just like the front cover of the beneath
the devil moon cd.  they are 17"x11".  we'll send them rolled :)

thanks for reading this far!!

growing patience :)

i'm not in an uproar - as for the tone - i personally know people who
would actually try to *crash* an event as special & sacred as a
performance done just for a special group - both for the experience of
being there & for the uniqueness of the boot.

subject:      admin: who's having digest problems?
mime-version: 1.0
content-type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"

okey-doke folks, time for some listmanaging...

a few people have been reporting problems with the digest form
of the list but for the life of me i can't figure out what the
problem might be.  i have a sneaking suspicion that it's maybe
something to do with incompatibility of mail formats and/or
incompatibility of header types, but that's just a guess.  a
very wild guess!  it could just be related to all the other
listserv problems we've been having, i really don't know.

but i'd like to hear from people who're having consistent
(ie at least one out of every two digests you get is messed
up) and current digest problems of any of the following
types:

1) digests cut off partway through
2) messages within digests lacking headers
3) messages within digests having parts missing

(fyi, the "list signature" (which begins "administrative messages
should not be sent to the list) should appear only once in each
digest, directly below the table of contents.)

if you're having any of the digest problems as described above,
or if you're having other weird things happening with your
digest (only current problems though - let's take this one step
at a time or i'll get too confused), drop me a note at
sherlyn@fl.net.au describing what sorts of problems you're having.
from there i will try to see what i can figure out.

thanks everyone,
sherlyn

i was rather happy to see patti.  okay, so she can't play the clarinet,
but it was so nice to see her!!  she also played "dancing barefoot,"
which is a favorite of mine.  i think that a lot of the house hadn't

hey y'all,

i've gotten enough branches to kick this s.c boot tree into gear.  the tree
info and such will be posted within the next few days.

*******  you dub monkey folks will hear from me soon. ******

someone asked me what the hell a branch monkey was (aka "dub monkey")  a
normal and "sane" person usually refers to such as a "branch" of the tree.
umm... well, when i was typing out the original post about the boot, i was
listening to "brass monkey" by the beastie boys....well...after 3 secs. into
the song i was screamin out "branch monkey!  that funky monkey!!" and for
some reason, it has evolved into "dub monkey"

don't ask me why.  its been a long ass day.

another thing.  i can't seem to pinpoint the actual date of this concert.
gaillard aud. charleston s.c.  someone told me 2-27-95 and another 2-7-95.
on my master it says 2-17-95.

if someone has access to past tour dates/archives whatever...lemme know
which is right.  i wont have time to figure this out till next week at this
pace. you would take a load off my shoulders. thanks in advance.

tree info coming soon.

to be continued......

i got one of those target sampler cds today at an insane discount price.
i already have one of my own, so i'll trade the cd for 2 boots (first
come, first serve). next, in the new issue of pulse (september) on pg 27
there is an ad for the honor album. it has a picture of amy and emily
that i have never seen before. it's more grunge/punk/something different
than they usually do. i like it. go to tower and check it out if you can.
if you want one and don't have access, i'll be going to tower next week
and snagging some extra copies. i could send the page to anyone who wants
to send an sase. let me know. moving on to non merchandise stuff, i heard
get out the map on the radio the other day, and it was on a station that
doesn't play shame on you (or at least i don't think it does). and
lastly, something from the indigo gods: i was wrapping those sots album
flats and i turn on the radio for some entertainment and the first song
that comes on is shame on you. it's a sign. wow. okay, enough babble from
me. write if you're interested in the cd or the picture.

well, mel, all i can say is that if you know people who would do that, 1)you
should give them the lecture, not me and the list, and 2) you oughta find a
better bunch of friends....

to most people, ig fans or not, list members or not, life is bigger than a
boot or a concert.

also, i'm sure native americans all over the country would appreciate your
stereotyping their reservations as pockets of poverty. some are, without a
doubt. the seminole reservation here is not. in fact, the seminoles have
quite a bit of money, regularly run television commercials touting their
contributions to the region -- which are many -- and have done much work to
reclaim the everglades. they just recently opened a million dollar museum on
their lands which will become quite the tourist attraction and which goes a
long way in preserving and showcasing their culture. they really do not need
anyone's pity.

finally, to all the people who emailed asking for me to forward any info i
find out about the show and whether it will be closed, i plan to make some
phone calls tuesday and will be happy to post the info to the list.

relax lisa-
i really don't appreciate your posting such personally inflammatory
comments to the list-- but since you are-- i feel, sadly, compelled to
reply. my initial response to your first post was not a *personal*
attack, contrary to what you seem to believe. and furthermore, i know
that not all reservations are not "pockets of poverty."
both of my parents were born and raised on the *only* fully incorporated
city in the united states existing entirely within an indian
reservation, salamanca, new york. i used to spend a great deal of time
there as a child-- and still return at least once a year (usually
christmas). one of my cousins is married to a seneca indian man, and
they have two children. i have seen the struggle she has faced trying to
incorporate her children's heritage into their lives. i think that is
why i felt compelled to respond the way i did to your first post to the
list regarding an ig performance at the seminole reservation in fla.
so whatever you do-- don't you *ever* accuse me of stereotyping native
americans-- i have two half-senaca second cousins whom i love dearly and
one seneca cousin-by marriage who is a great guy.

it bothers me that someone gets this much press coverage simply for being
married to someone who is part of nothing more than a meaningless royal
"system."

the royalty of england, as i understand it, are just figureheads, and don't
really make many decisions affecting the direction of the country.

it's one thing to think that they simply gave her that much press coverage
because of all the work she was doing for charities and what not, but i
personally am not impressed by that fact.  there are thousands of people
who probably do more than she does to assist charity, but will we ever
heard of them on tv?  no.  because they're not "famous."

i first heard about this only a few hours after the accident, about 1am
cdt.  my first thought was a sense of regret that she was dead.  not
because she was dead as much as because that will be all that we hear for
the next three weeks.

having said all of this, making myself look like a completely cold-hearted
bastard (perhaps not an entirely false description, i admit), it is a shame
she is dead, but not because she is "royalty."  it is a shame because she
is a human.  press coverage be damned.

first of all i want to say this is just a general comment directed at all of
us who use the internet.  i merely included a partial quote from mel because
it is the latest example of hurt feelings...

every time this kind of thing happens on a mail list it makes me so sad.
there seem to be many heated arguments and hurt feelings that occur simply
because we are speaking to one another without the benefit of seeing each
other face to face and actually hearing someone's tone of voice or seeing
their facial expressions.  it is so easy to misinterpret what someone has
said or to perceive a general statement as a personal attack.

the internet is a wonderful thing most of the time, but once in a while i
think it divides us more often than it brings us together.  if only we could
actually see/hear each other over the internet half of our arguments would
never take place.  <sigh>

just a thought
cheers!

interesting thoughts on your part... but i think that the point that is
missing here is besides being human, she was a hard working humanitarian.
yeah, so she was married to a royal.. but hey guess what.. she isn't
anymore.. and she is still doing more charitable work than certainly i can
do.. .. yes even if it only means lending that royal name..
i gotta wonder that if the same thing happened to amy or emily, people here
on this list would be planning a pilgrimage of some sort. or at least
complaining about the lack of press coverage.
we all know the hassles of papparrazi.. and i would think those here would be
a little more sensitive to hmmmm i don't know  the people around them.. royal
or not.

that's my interesting thought for the day.

conversely, she did worlds of good for many.  how many of us would have
much awareness of the problem of landmines if not for her?  she
was also one of the first to treat hiv patients as people nd not
as lab specimens needing gloves to be handled.  she dispelled myths
about leprosy.  she brought attention to many other issues.  instead
of letting a closet full of clothes accumulate dust, she donated many
dresses to charity auction, a suggestion given to her by her son
whom she had been raising to be aware of the disadvantaged.  she was not
a rich person who insulated herself from the world.  on the contrary,
she got invlved in the world.  this is something far too few poeple of
any class do.

her loss is a shame because she did a lot of very good work in this
world, and her death was a result of a warped press' desire to pay
mega amounts of money to get public people in private moments.
stalkerazzi photographers, after tha almighty dollar, pushed things to
the ultimate limit.  it is equally tragic that innocennt poeple,
the chauffeur and hte bodyguard, also lost life and sustained injury.

let me ask you this, since you are on this list:  if, goddess forbid,
it had been amy or emily that had gone this way, would you feel
differently?  why?

dear list

i see some members are getting hot under the collar over the amount of
'press' created about the our royal family.
i like many people around the world have been shocked and, well, stunned
is the nearest thing i can get to it, by what has happened. sure there
have been times when the public airing of dirty linen was just
sickening. i can think of few events in my life that have struck home to
so many people, i turned to bbc radio and tv which have given diana's
death total coverage, to the exclusion of normal sunday routine. this is
not the kind of intrusive coverage that the tabloid press inflicts on
such celebrities, it was done quite tastefully and with a genuine
sadness that you could feel coming from the reporters and anchor people.
you could see the shock in the faces of these people who's profession it
is to have an emotional detachment from disasters and sad news.
sorry to go on so, but had to share.

diana will be in my prayers tonight, and also dodi fayed and the dead
chauffeur.

i find myself unable to not contribute to this discussion that will, no
doubt, end like so many here have with a flurry pleas from others begging
us to limit ourselves to igc.  as bubbles says on ab fab, saw-ray.

i think what is truly remarkable about di, who i have never been interested
in before now, is how she has used the fame that was given to her.  she did
not create the royal family in england, she didn't create our obsession
with "famous" people, and she didn't create the crazed papparazi.  it was
there before she was.  when she came into it, tough, she learned to use it
in a way that would benefit many people.  i think it is truly remarkable to
take a strange and convoluted situation and squeeze worlds of good out of
it, which is what she did.  it is far beyond making lemonade out of lemons,
but definitely in the same vein.  we have much to learn from her legacy.

i am also comletely new to the bootleg thang, so i need some guideance.

i would also like a bootleg of the mount holyoke college show on march 12,
1997, as i was there with someone special and would love to relive some
memories!  at this particular show, they started the evening by playing the
sots album from start to finish (this was a month and a half before the new
album came out) and then did their "old standbys."

amy also did this great song, i don't know what the name of it was, but
some of the lyrics at the beginning were "anorexic girls on the street."
very bold, very taboo, i loved it.

anyway, private e-mail me if you can be of any assistance to me at all, i
would be forever indebted.

carry on,

nickleby.

i found doug's feelings a bit peculiar.  famous people lending their names
and visability to charitable causes is so commonplace it hardly seems worthy
of anger!   i would feel safe to assume then, that others who feel that way,
must also think the indigo girls charity work is somewhat frivolous.  amy and
emily have often stated that charity concerts and benefits they participate
in are for causes they strongly support.  they also have said that by lending
their time and names to the cause, they hope to garner increased recognition
for the charity and to encourage others to lend their support.  diana lived
her life that way.  the indigo girls have also chosen that path.  yes, they
all get more attention than you or i would if we were to hold a benefit.  but
who cares!!!  is that important?   there was something about diana and her
passion that i found enticing.  it is a horrible tragedy that she died;  not
only as a famous person, but as a mother, a sister, a friend, and a woman.

this just in:

the indigo girls will be playing ryman auditorium in nashville, tn on oct
15th.  advertisements, or at least the one in the aug 31 tennessean
newspaper said that the show is at starwood amphitheatre, but evidently the
girls changed their minds at the last minute and wanted a more intimate
location.

have been unable to find anything on the internet about this date, but i
believe everything i read in the newspapers. :)

my apologies if this is old information.

i have a friend thatsent a copy of "let it be me" to diana, and got a
letter back saying that she liked the song a great deal, and even had a bit
in it where she took lines from the song and said what it meant to her. she
was an angel, and as my grandfather used to say, sometimes god calls his
favorite angels home first. in closing, a few lines that make me think of
diana......she really did shine her life like a light.

"a distant nation, my community, a street person, my responsibility, if i
have a care in the world i have a gift to bring"
"i've seen the kingdoms blow like ashes in the winds of change, but the
power of truth is the fuel for the flame, so the darker the ages get,
there's a stronger beacon yet"
and most ironically..
"they're coming for us, cameras or guns, we don't know which, but we gotta
run, this is not what i bargained for"
in diana's memory, i ask that you play "the girl with the weight of the
world in her hands" and say a little prayer, that diana's spirit may pass
safely into heaven tonight.

give me any advice, tips, etc. including what kind of recorder most

in... any info you can give me will be greatly appreciated.
thank you so much.

take care,
