you know i feel the same way about dire straits and r&j.  love them both
and i also think i like amy's version just a teensy bit more than the
original.  i didn't at first, but in the end i just couldn't resist amy's
passion.  would love to hear them do "water of love'.  anyway, in
response to what other covers i think are better than the originals?  i
think tangled up... blows dylan out of the proverbial water. as much as i
like neil, i love ig singing down by the river and cortez the killer, and
would love to hear them do cinnamon girl.  and amy and michelle singing
wild horses is a truly orgasmic experience.  well, that's my opinion
anyway.  :)

sorry for the waste of bandwidth folks!

but i have a
random question:

did anyone go and boot the ani difranco concert in central park that
took place a couple of weeks ago?

my friend was the one who was allowed to play a song with ani on stage
(she lugged her violin all the way from boston to nyc!) and now she's dying
for a boot of her brush with greatness! :)

thanks all!

dear list-o-wonderful people,

it's just little ol' me writing to remind you that a vibrant, witty,
talented and all around wonderful musician needs your help!  as many know,
michelle malone had an emergency surgery a few weeks back and is now
recovering at home.  alison, being the sensitive and caring person we all
know her to be, took it upon herself to collect contributions from the list
to be delivered on october 8th at the eddie's attic benefit. in fact, she's
still accepting cards, small objects, get well wishes as well as checks!
send a cash, check or money order made out to alison taub (or michelle
malone), 22410 philiprimm st., woodland hills ca 91367.  the last time we
spoke, she said that we have collected many wonderful cards and $300.00!!!
this is a great turnout for something that has been organized so quickly,
and we still have a few days left!

i've already sent my money, because i want michelle to know how much i have
been inspired by her work and many talents (i dare anyone of you to play the
guitar and the harmonica and sing and sound half as good as michelle does
nightly!).  i think that it's going to be a great surprise for michelle when
we show up with a big old bag of cards and goodies and a nice check to help
out with those hospital bills.

i know many of you were disapointed to find out that michelle was not going
to open some of the recent ig dates, so now's you're chance to show her
directly how much she was missed by sending your checks to alison to arrive
by the end of the week so that we can include them!!!!  i think this is the
least we can do for someone who has contributed to our lives, both through
her own musical trajectory and through enriching amy & emily's music as she
so often does when she shares the stage with them.  we don't want michelle
to have to take a day job to pay this off do we???  nooooo!!!  we want her
energies to be focused on making awe-inspiring music.

thanks again to all who are contributing to the list collection, and to
anyone who is thinking about it - join in already!

subject:      rcam and volunteers (long)
mime-version: 1.0
content-type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1
content-transfer-encoding: 8bit

ok...
*  i've only been on the list for a few months - please flame
politely!!!

*  problems get fixed because people propose a good solution
along with identifying a problem.  in this case, rcam may say
yes, just because they haven't got the time to (and therefore
won't) come up with another solution.

observations from previous postings
-----------------------------------
*  rcam either lacks common courtesy and/or computer savvy
and/or staff.  even if these are only partly true, the ig fan
club is a free service.  staff is fixed and has to handle many
things.  [  as amy once said about daemon---which tends to lose
money, not make it---she can't pay her staff what she would like
to pay them.  ]
*  people on this list have courtesy suggestions, would really
like to get accurate and up-to-date ig information, and care
about organizations that the girls raise money for.
*  some of you same folks also know how to use every bill gates
product ever produced, as well as those from brands x, y, and z.

so
--
*  why not offer the fan club a volunteer technical support
group and/or a volunteer newsletter/communication support group?
*  part of  what's needed may just be technical consultation and
assistance --- how to create templates, to set up or change
databases or even just a mail-merge set-up, etc.  all things
possible electronically and remotely.
*  work (templates, database creation, scanning, or even data
entry ...) can be offloaded to volunteers, if this helps.  many
of us can be vetted as trustworthy people without a lot of
effort.

the point (for those who are with me so far)
--------------------------------------------
*  none of the issues we have been bringing up should really be
issues these days. they are not problems requiring sophisticated
solutions.

also
----
*  could the newsletter be improved?  [perhaps a useful and
independent thread for the list.]  as long as some of us are
offering to back up suggestions with work, rcam might like the
idea.  i get the feeling that rcam is on overload, not
responding well.
*  gift acknowledgments would be nice (not absolutely necessary,
but nice).  what we view as courtesy to fans might improve if
doing it becomes easy.  this assumes that *nice and motivated*
people do in fact work for rcam and they are just overwhelmed
with other things.   i do not *know* it to be otherwise.

positive benefits
-----------------
*  feelings that come with doing something good.
*  fixing problems that reflect negatively back on a&e and the
many causes they support.
*  perhaps a sincere thanks from a&e next time one of us gets a
close encounter.  (!)
*  this would be good pr for ig and rcam to say they have a free
and active fan club and such a terrific volunteer base.
*  if rcam likes the changes, perhaps they would eventually put
$$$ behind an effort to make it work more smoothly without us.
(i wish...)

that's all
----------
*  again, flame politely.  i'm new (a few months) --- no
interactions with rcam or the fan club.
*  trying to help may very well be an old suggestion.
*  it's late.  i have a rough week ahead and wanted to off-load
this while it was fresh.
*  most of us are already overcommitted, but it's just one
more...  and  ...there's a kernel of a good idea here.
*  maybe some of you will chew on this for a bit, have ideas to
make it work, or have useful commentary.

i think this is very strange--i didn't see any of these tina turner sings
country posts until this morning, and last night i dreamed i was at this
little dive of a restaurant, the catfish house, out in the country near my

more an interpretation than a personal reflection.  to me, it is at least
partly about recognition, in hindsight, of childhood clues about sexuality.

especially if compared relative to their respective wealth.  but you also
need to see where their money is going.  turner's gift to the un charities
is much more selfless than gate's gifts of computers to schools and
libraries (can you say "marketing"?).

guess it depends on your definition of "hassling."  if everyone tried to
shake their hands, they'd never get done!  i've generally been impressed
with the restraint people have shown.  i'm glad, because it's really great
that they do that and i'd hate to see them have to stop.

interesting, but hardly representative, since someone who went to 102 shows
is infinitely more likely to write and tell you so than someone who went to
1.  the median might be a little better than the mean, since the people who
saw 102 or 1 skew the mean so much.

no way!!!  what kind of butch straightens and bleaches her hair??? :-)  amy
would kick melissa's butt!  (it's a joke, no flames please.)

which reminds me of something amy said about melissa once... from the
5/21/92 ucsd guardian:

                               =-=-=<>=-=-=

interviewer: what do you think about artists that gain a more "slick" look
with every album? i'm thinking here of melissa etheridge, who is a friend
of yours.  it seems like her record company is trying to "mainstream" her.

amy: [laughs] well, don't let her fool ya, it's not just her record
company. any artist that lets a company do that to them, it's just as much
their fault. i think that every artist is self-determined to some extent.
melissa and i always had different ideas about the music world -- she's
always been maybe a bit more business-minded than i have. sure, i think
her record company wanted her to be more mainstream, but in the end it's
her decision, you know. you should be involved with your career, and you
should make sure you're aware of what's going on, and if things are
happening that you don't want to happen you should say things about it.

on the disney channel in 1995.
here it is:

fugitive
dead man's hill
galileo
hammer & a nail
this train, revised (with jacob's ladder intro)
least complicated
ghost
kid fears
closer to fine

it's a pretty good concert. about an hour long.  i think the editor
really liked emily, because there are alot of close up's of emily and
not too many of amy.

fare thee well,

hey!

this is just a note to find out if anyone on the list is still trying to
find a way to get geneseo, ny tickets for the girls' nov. 2 concert.
tickets
go on sale to students on the 16th of october and to the rest of the
world on
the 23rd, and it is a general admission concert.  i don't really know
how much a
chance there is of a sell out before it opens up to everyone, but if you
don't
trust ticketmaster and their endless "hold please", then here's another
way to
go.  i e-mailed a couple of geneseo students and am getting my ticket
through
one very sweet woman who wrote me back, but i have recieved another
response
from another student offering to pick up tickets, and since i've already
got
mine secured i thought maybe someone else might need one.  if that's the
case
e-mail me and i'll give you this woman's address and you can go from
there.
tickets are $18 and if you want to do this you need e-mail me at least
by
tomorrow morning so i can get back to her before she gives up on me.
thats all!

hope everyone's enjoying their monday more than i am...

just "won't" play anymore (for whatever reason)???? i know in several sting

okay who actually thinks a & e pay retail for their guitars?

okay if we've made it past that one, who actually thinks a & e don't legally
get to write off any expenses related to the production and performance of
their music when they file their taxes?  personal income aside.... business
is business.

one last comment... i too have had a bad experience in dealing with the rcm
office.  yes, very rude folks.  i'm sure they get a ton of calls but really
the lack of tact is uncalled for.

okay back to lurking...

if you played guitar for a living, you'd buy the best damn guitar(s) you
could afford, wouldn't you? why begrudge them the fact that they can
afford to buy the best? >>

kids, i mean kids!!!

okay...i've tried to hold off on doing this until i felt as if i might rupture
my own spleen with wanting, but i cannot *deal* one millisecond longer. where
are you, booters of the tampa and/or west palm shows? you know the ones...the
shows with the playing of romeo and juliet? the song we never thought we'd ever
hear again live?

we must have your tapage!!!! please, we are the desperate...the lonely...the
otherwise obsessed completists who occasionally admit to using bootlegs as
coasters (did i say that? i meant....toasters!! toaster ovens!!! every good
queer guy n girl has several extras anyway).....if you have a copy of said
tape, please make yourselves known!!! to any one of us...you don't have to
"out" yourself to the list.....email one of us who you like (mememe please let
it be me or someone i know or at least who can tolerate me) and i/we/whoever
will gladly make copies or set up a tree or anything!!! i can offer the
following in trade:

1) any one...or twelve...of my existing 100+ ig bootlegs
2) any one or twelve of my ani difranco bootlegs
3) a slightly battered unquestionably stylin' 94 saturn sl1 (okay, maybe just
for a drive around the block or to friendly's)
4) a body part...booters choice!!! liz likes to offer kidneys...but mine aint
so hot given the college years at transylvania u, so i'll offer a couple ribs
and a deltoid, heck, ill even throw in a couple of lymph nodes free of

please come forth, we beg you!!

because it's just so damn good--if you didn't read it the first time read
it now) has made an exceptionally good suggestion.  i personally don't have

from:    rosemary walling <walling@aimnet.com>
subject: rcam and volunteers (long)

ok...
*  ive only been on the list for a few months - please flame
politely!!!

*  problems get fixed because people propose a good solution
along with identifying a problem.  in this case, rcam may say
yes, just because they havent got the time to (and therefore
wont) come up with another solution.

observations from previous postings
-----------------------------------
*  rcam either lacks common courtesy and/or computer savvy
and/or staff.  even if these are only partly true, the ig fan
club is a free service.  staff is fixed and has to handle many
things.  [  as amy once said about daemon---which tends to lose
money, not make it---she cant pay her staff what she would like
to pay them.

*  part of  whats needed may just be technical consultation and
assistance --- how to create templates, to set up or change
databases or even just a mail-merge set-up, etc.  all things
possible electronically and remotely.

(i wish...)

thats all
----------
*  again, flame politely.  im new (a few months) --- no
interactions with rcam or the fan club.
*  trying to help may very well be an old suggestion.
*  its late.  i have a rough week ahead and wanted to off-load
this while it was fresh.
*  most of us are already overcommitted, but its just one
more...  and  ...theres a kernel of a good idea here.
*  maybe some of you will chew on this for a bit, have ideas to
make it work, or have useful commentary.

anywhere near cincinnati or virginia, i'm there.  a
birthday present to myself.  and good news...i finally got
my gotm t-shirt today after more than two months of
waiting.  those at the blacksburg concert have already
heard this, but i'm curious to see what others think...on
the green gotm t-shirt, is the woman doing what i think she
is?  if so, that's really funny and i'm going to wear that
shirt every day for the rest of my life.  blah, blah, sorry
for the waste of bandwidth but after 6 hours of writing a
paper in french about the protestant reformation i need to
amuse myself somehow......................

please someone who was branch or header (1s t generation copies) of the

hold on to your hats, midwesterners...there's more!

nov. 30 - glacial park fest - ig my favorite park, from atop the

grants a guaranteed "warmest november 30 ever" evening.

actually if anyone has any information on this show please send it to the
list! there are a ton of us central ohio fans that are interested in making
the trek also.

actually lori j. and i met up at the library yesterday quite by accident
and she couldn't wait for me to read my email to find out so she pulled me
into a private area (kinda) of the library to tell me, i must say we caused
quite a scene :-) people must have thought we were nuts!

amy and emily- here i come!!!!!

as every single ig fan knows,  prominent women musicians have long used
their talents to promote good causes; this tradition continues today for
breast cancer awareness.

there's a site called leading ladies that provides information about breast
cancer (age-specific quizzes & health check-lists),  and a new cd set
called (what else, but....)  leading ladies.

this unique cd set covers women's music from the 40s to the 90s - imagine
the greatest women artists all in one place! the sales of the album are
going towards the promotion of  breast cancer awareness.   here's the url
if you're curious   http://www.leadingladies.com

a nasty cold wasn't about to stop me from going to these two shows, not
with 3rd row and 6th row seats, respectively. it did stop me from
posting this yesterday, as i was still recovering. recommendation: when
you have a sore throat, do not woohoo with reckless abandon. i did a lot
of woohooing and now i am paying for it.

i saw that somebody posted the setlist for tampa and i can confirm it
was correct. i know because sulli (a friend of a friend) gave me the
actual set list from the microphone stand of the dark-haired goddess.
some interesting notes about the setlist: they were originally going to
do world falls instead of romeo & juliet, and hey kind friend instead of
land of canaan. i can't say i was disappointed with the substitutes, but
would have liked to hear hkf. i was with a really close friend who lives
far away from me and i never know when i'll get to see her we both agree
we would have been sobbing uncontrollably.

about the show. it was exactly like the old days only much, much bigger.
so much energy, so many smiles from the girls. that ever-so-cute emily
saying thanks y'all with that touch of amazement in her voice. i swear i
was the oldest person there, and i was acting like a 12 year-old. my
heart actually fluttered when i heard the opening strains of crazy game
(amy did not swerve her hips and do the hand thingy like in years past)
and land of canaan, when my heart nearly burst with joy. i have seeen
them many times from up close, small clubs, practically sitting in their
laps and i can say this show ranked right up there as one of the finest.

it's true - they both simultaneously forgot the words to ctf (at "i went
to see the doctor of philosophy...") - not mumbling - actually stopped
playing (as the crowd sang on for a few seconds) and then they both
cracked up laughing. it took a good 30 seconds for them to compose
themselves and after a second mis-start, on they sang. i saw a girl with
a list shirt on during indigenous' set, but it was so loud all i could
say was "nice shirt!" like the dockers commercial.

actual set list from west palm beach - this time sulli gave me the set
list from the keyboard of the light haired goddess.

strange fire

prince of darkness

two of my favorites, strange fire and prince of darkness, were
definitely the highlights this night for me. to me, strange fire is the
penultimate ig song. it is so "them." and i was actually moved to tears
during pod. i lost a close friend last year - this song has always
reminded me of him and it was just too raw. other than blood and fire, i
could not have hoped for more over the two sets. romeo and juliet on two
consecutive nights, with watershed and virgina wolf thrown in for good
measure! again, this show ranked right up there. the crowd was
fantastic, but didn't seem as intense as tampa. i think it had to do
with the fact that the show was outside in an amphitheater. the sound
bled out instead of being contained inside and adding to the cauldron of
feeling flying around. i sat right in front of a list guy (ochs?) and he
and his friend evan were just too cute. evan actually asked me if his
yelling and dancing were bugging me. i was so enthralled i didn't even
hear/see him.

i asked one of the young seminole women about the possibility of the
sunday show being open to non-natives, and she said she thought it was
for tribal members only.  there's only about 300 traditional seminoles
that live in the seminole nation in the everglades. what a show that
must have been!

amy
fort lauderdale

p.s. i was going to lobby the light haired goddess (who everybody knows
is a big softie) for more midwest shows when she came out to get the
political action cards, but she was mobbed, so even though i was on the
end of the row, i didn't get to talk to her. not to worry, i did manage
to pass my row's cards back to somebody who passed them along.

p.p.s. the idiot who writes the reviews for the local newspaper, the sun
sentinel actually got one right. it sounded like he was blown away. when
i get more time, i'll post the review if anybody is interested.

p.p.p.s. for those who care what the girls were wearing or how they
looked - get a life! (flame away)

ig played r&j in santa fe, nm during the hte tour. i believe that was in
'95, so it may be accounted for on your list above. because the venue was
an outdoor one, the filmed part of the show had to wait until after the
girls played most of their songs and the sun had gone down. after the film,
they each played a solo, emily - history of us and amy - romeo & juliet.
it was a most pleasant surprise. if memory serves, they also played
crazy game during the regular set as a special request. definitely one of the
best set lists i have ever heard.

yes- i agree- the tampa show was great... i've seen the ig's many times, but
like them best when it's just them , no band.  to this show i brought my
little niece.  it was her first concert (she's eleven) and seeing her light
up when the girls took the stage was really cool.

please indulge me, for a moment, to rant about something that was ~not~ so
cool... (well...as long as everyones going on with pet peeves and such...)

i'd like to address this to the four young women who did about all they could
to obscure the views of about twenty people.  yes, i know you probably aren't
reading this, <you may not be able to read at all>  but the question begs to
be asked;
do you need to be the center of attention ~everywhere~ you go?
are you always that rude, or do concerts just bring out the asshole in you?
why did you have to act that way?  there was no one and nothing in front of
you.  no reason you had to stand.  you could've danced in the aisle all night
long and not bothered anyone.  yes- you were exicited to be seeing them for
the first time- but what gave you the right to decide that we had to stand
all night just because you wanted to?  ( i recall buying seats, not a  place
to stand)  every time someone asked you to sit or move over a little, you
said they needed to get more "into it".   i had trashed my back that week, my
girlfriend had worked on concrete for 8 hours that day, and- oh yeah-remember
the woman behind you with the little girl with her arm in a sling?  they only
lasted about a 1/2 hour before moving to seats farther away but safe from
your jostling.
yeah- we really wanted to stand for 3 hours.
but we did.... then you decided to stand on your chairs!   jeeze louise!

and remember how you kept giggling to each other about how bad you smelled
towards the end of the evening?   would you believe it really wasn't that
funny to those of us that were downwind?  here's a tip;  when you stink that
bad; keep your arms down!  (
in other words,no, your sweat did not smell clean)

i guess the last straw was, when we finally got my niece into a position
where she could see more then your backs, you thought it'd be fun to blow pot
smoke into her face...

again, i have nothing against dancing and having a wild time at shows- but
these girls were trashed and out of control.... do any of you have any tips
on how to deal with people like this?

<stepping off soapbox>
thank you :)

<again, i have nothing against dancing and having a wild time at shows- but
<these girls were trashed and out of control.... do any of you have any tips
<on how to deal with people like this?

at the pittsgurgh lilith fair, there were a couple women behind my best
friend and i who talked during sarah maclachlan...very loudly and
obnoxiuosly.  it upset both of us because we are huge fans of sarah and it
was the first time we had seen her...and we paid for 2nd row seats so we
could get the full affect only to be distracted.  we finally both turned
around and asked them to stop, which they did, until sheryl crow.  they
were trashed, one got sick and had to run to the bathroom, and the other
started yelling at my friend for some unknown reason...said she was making
fun of the sick one when all she did was get up from her chair so the sick
one could climb over.

as for seeing, i don't know wjere you were sitting, but we were lucky
because the first row got fed up with all these young girls rushing the
stage during jewel so they moved their chairs up so no one could walk in
front of them.  ig were completely non-obstructed.  however, we stood the
whole time, though we weren't drunk or anything and we weren't crass to
those around us.  i think sitting up in front, you almost have to expect to
stand because those are the die-hard fans and that's where the energy is.
in certain circumstances people who are asked should sit down, or at least
move over slightly, but a concert is a concert, and people are there to
show their support and love for the group performing.  i got so much more
out of ig while standing because i felt more connected and alive and into
the music.

sorry that you had a bad ig experience...

alisa

hey all,
been a long while since i posted.  i just had to share my little bit
of happiness with everyone.  my husband sent a fan letter and a request
for something to her a couple of weeks before she got sick.  anyhoo, we
received a package in the mail today with the request and a really nice
hand written note thanking us for being tireless fans and always
supporting her.  it made me feel so good that she took the time to do
this.  the note wasn't very long but heart felt.

well, it's back to studying for stats!  but my day is brighter!

the student government association is keeping it a big secret and won't
leak any info to anybody.  so just be patient, she is still trying and
will e-mail me as soon as she finds out anything.  also, for those of you
who emailed me asking if we could get you tickets, here's what i will do:
you need to trust me that i will not screw you over on this!!!  i would
like to have you guys get checks/money orders made out to me or my
girlfriend.  we will then consolidate all the money into one huge lump
sum, with which she will (camp out at central ticket services the night
before, and then) proceed to attempt to buy out as many seats for the
money she received in the closest rows possible.  we will then hand out
the tickets before the show, or, depending on how early we get them, maybe
snail mail them to you.  but don't do anything just yet, don't write me
asking for the address or anything, i'll post it as soon as we know what

this is totally silly and my girlfriend (from here on to be known as
michelle; i get so sick of writing "my girlfriend"--it sounds so
pretentious to me, like i'm rubbing it in that i have one or something)
will probably kill me for suggesting this, but i really want to have a
giant sleep-over party for all the listees going to the mysterious dayton
show.  i think we should have it at michelle's house.  of course.  hee
hee.  she's gonna kill me....

well, what do you do when you're not near the aisle, or aren't allowed to
dance in it?  that happened to me at the columbus lilith fair.  so my
friend and i stood up and danced, much to the chagrin of the people behind
us.  what are we supposed to do?

let's see- "4.5" is a compilation from -i'm thinking england- which includes
various indigo girls hits from all the albums up to & including swamp
ophelia. no new tunes or anything, basically a best of album. :) there's a
story about the title, but it's escaping me right now & i had to type "let's
see" about 5 times, so i'm gonna nap & let someone else tell it.

hey kids,
i have a couple of requests for you:
1)  does anyone know anything about this?  it's an assignment for my geology
class and i can't find a single thing about it on the web, so i figured the
ig list was the next best place to look.  here's the question:

what was happening during sept-oct 1983 in southern arizona (and especially
affected tucson) that happened again this year (1997 and affected yuma) at
almost the same time of year? here is a hint: it has something to do with a
natural hazard. [don't hesitate to use the library or the internet. don't ig
nora this hint weather you understand it or water you don't]

any ideas?

also,
2)  i am in the process of trying to work out my summer and fall semester.
what i want to do is spend six weeks in london taking classes, with a
program through my university, then spend the rest of the summer working in
britain, then spend fall semester at our campus in luxembourg.  the only
part i'm having problems with is the working in britain thing.  i know i can
get a work permit, etc., through a program called work in britain.  they can
also help me look for a job, but i would like it to be an internship of some
sort (so i feel like i'm learning something too - it would make my parents
happy).  do any of you brits (or anyone else for that matter) know of any
sort of internship-type thing (preferably in information systems or a
computer-related field) that could last about six weeks this summer?  the
most convenient location would be london or norwich, but that's the least of
my concerns right now.  if anyone has any information, i'd really appreciate
it.  thanks.
if it works out, maybe i can meet some of you this summer.  keep your
fingers crossed.

motivate us, make us happy.....here it is.....
(think this would be good on a list shirt?)

front:

"through every storm and the darkness of
night comes a patch of blue."

(we could change the "blue" to "indigo", or not.
i see this quote in script letters amongst fluffy clouds in
a light blue sky, maybe with a rainbow
sweeping through it.)

back:

indigo-girls@netspace.org

(would this violate any copyright????)

well, just another idea.  i haven't heard much
about a list shirt lately.  don't tell me we're losing
interest.
