everytime i see the abbreviation eiiot i think of elliot. :)
i've always thought this song was a testimony to the daily struggles that
people are involved with looked at as they appear at that moment. some of
our most firey moments, those moments of intense personal emotion and feeling,
are often thought of as the most significant aspects in our lives. but when
we step back and look at the course of our own lives we see that they are made
up of highs, lows, rises, falloffs and plateaus. there are momentary flashes
of seemingly significance but in the overall picture it comes back to us, and
that is the most significant aspect of our lives.
"we own nothing ... nothing is ours...."
i also would like to state, from a musical point of view, how significant
the rhythmic strummings and drumming are to its emotional covenant. most
impressively executed there a & e. the force is with them. :)

hkf-
a couple of quick thoughts-
fugutive- christy asked how we learned about cooper and amy? i read it in
people and deneuve (now curve) magazines, years ago- probably back in 1994,
where amy told the public herself. cooper was even interviewed for one of the
articles. i saw her pictures in back on the bus y'all, read amy's liner notes
for years thanking her. cooper's band was always mentioned too. i think they
were hoping to get her some national publicity. i know some altanta scene
people were camping on their doorstep, but outside that, it was the ig
materials themselves that promoted to ig fans nationwide who cooper was.
everything in its own time- i agree with wendell who said this is about so
many of the issues we as gay people face. i see that as part of what emily
meant when she said the song is about peace. these old white men are sitting
around a table in their smoky parlor playing- as i imagine it- a game like
risk- a war game, totally removed from the humanity of their attitudes and
decisions, who lives, who dies, who is privileged in society, who is
expendable. emily's inspirational message speaks in particular to gays and
lesbians because we have been so persecuted, and our sons' blood has been
spilled like table wine.

jake,
the replacements were a band from minneapolis, featuring paul
westerberg. the replacements are often cited (along with bands like the
pixies) as having been very influential, although not very mainstream
popular. they came out during the height of mtvs destruction of actual
music in favor of video image (okay, a bit of a personal editorial
there).
i have always thought amy's comment meant that loc started out as a
slow, easy ballad, sort of ala james taylor, but somewhere along the way
she heard the rather driving sound of the replacements and saw a
different way she could play loc.
anyhow, that's my interpretation of her comment.

jawline! and hey...he was romeo in "romeo & juliet", she sings the part
of romeo in "romeo & juliet", she had a long relationship with cooper,
he had a long relationship with co......caine (haha), emily is amy's
red-headed sidekick, kate winslet is his red-headed sidekick, he is a
big thespian, amy is a big lesbian !!!!!!!! hahaha...i don't know where
my brain is today. hey! how many guests can the yale students bring?

it means that the song, in it's original form, was a ballad...a much slower
paced song (i have a copy of it somewhere) and then, when she heard the
band called the replacements, she changed it to the faced paced song we all
know and love today (i like the version on the self-titled album better!)

very well put. i've always looked on it with a slightly general view
as well, allowing the listener to interpret what kind of struggles are
being battled, whether it be coming out or whatever. everybody finds
different meanings in songs.

that's beautiful man. i like that. warning: sports analogy. it's
like what coaches and the like say all the time, a team is never as
good as the best game they play, or as bad as the worst game they
play, that's why there is a nice long season to even things out. life
is like that too, never as good as the best times or as bad as the
worst times.

hey y'all. i forgot about to mention this to you all. i was at a local
bookstore and one of my friends that works there said, "you hear that? it's
the indigo girls." i said, "no way!" (it was this crazy dance music that i
always hear in there...not anything i'd ever associate with the girls!)
well, i listened for a few minutes. it was the dance mix version of shed
your skin, or one of the versions. actually, the story behind it is that my
friend obtained a copy straight from the studio (officially unreleased at
the time) and played it for us at the bookstore. he said that was one of a
few versions they were going to decide on that very day to release. it's
interesting, although not my kind of music. i was cracking up!!!

we went through this a couple of weeks ago, but hey...no worries.
what she means is this: "when i first wrote this song (land of canaan), it
was a ballad (a slow, mournful song about a sorrowful part of my life).
and then i heard the replacements (an 80's-era alternative band which most
people view as one of the more important bands in rock history), and it
wasn't anymore (i was so changed and touched by the replacements' music
that what started as a ballad metamorphosized into a rocking, driving song
whose lyrics are the same but whose music is completely different)."
cool? cool.

could everyone who i've recently made a cd for (within the last two or
three weeks) please listen to them all the way through very carefully
to see if there are any skips or repeats?
my f: hard drive went bad and didn't tell me. i didn't find out until
recently. i think windows 95 was using it as a virtual memory drive and
therefore causing the problem. it only happened on very large audio files.
i am truly sorry if any of you have affected discs. if you do please send
me the tapes again and i'll redo the songs or the entire discs if you want.
i'm replacing the bad hard drive and will have the problem corrected asap!
i'm going to check all the cds i've burned that haven't been sent out yet
to see if any are affected. if there are then i'll redo them before sending
them out.
again .... i'm really, really sorry if there is a problem.

just a quick question about that old version. did she just speed up the tempo,
or was the melody, key, etc. changed as well when she transformed it into what
it is today. i keep trying to slow down the lyrics to the same melody and it
sounds strange (and not just cause i sing bad!). is that how it was orignially?

first, i'd like to say to the "it's caitlin" girl, hmm, that whole story
of amy and leo..whaaa! i'm scared to go to bed and have some kind of
screwed up dreams. (and i'm a professionnal dreamer, just ask my turtle
... ;p)
now, serious stuff, ahem!
(wait let me get the lyrics so i dont shock anyone w/ unfortunate
mistakes) (and yes, *fortunate* mistakes do exist)
sooo,
1) "the weightlessness of us as things around begin to shift"
someone said sumpin about that line, i dont remember exactly, but i see it
differently. for me it means that when things go all weird around us,
(sometimes horrible things that you cant even believe they happen,
sometimes such wonderful things that it makes you want to cry even thought
you're smiling) we dont have any control over it, and we cant do nothing
but deal with it. we're just like leaves in the wind. (hee hee, that
sounds like a bad song title) (oups sorry whoever if it is a song title)
2) i always felt this song was about peace. to be confident that it
will come. i dont know about ya'll, but me somedays i'm just so
discouraged with the whole world. like not my own little life, but wars,
and racism, and sexism, and homophobia, and violence and abuse and all
those crazy stupid things. like, isnt there anything i can do?
3) i could go on for a while about this song. but i'm a shy girl. i mean,
there's a lot of you out there!
july ;)

hey guitar players,
i'm playing "love will come to you" with a friend-- him on piano, me on gee-

those books seem to be missing a lot of things . . .
anyway. it would be really cool if somebody out there who figured it out
could send the tab over to me. so far, with what we got for the rest of the
piece, it actually sounds passable. though we haven't really tried singing
the whole thing together yet. that'll be interesting.

overwhelmingly positive.
second, both julie and dave will be playing next saturday the 11th with

shows...7 and 9:30 i believe. shawn has a strong following in atlanta and
the se. he's quite good and i think you ig fans will really like him.
dave and julie are psyched to be playing with him for the next couple
months. i'd love to see a bunch of you in person showing your support for
julie and dave while listening to some great music!
hope to see you there!
respond privately with questions.
thanks.
cheri
ps..dave and julie are both doing quite well and are getting lots of offers
of work(so many they're having to turn some people down). thanks again

i really can't explain it......everytime i need to get away from everything,
vent, or celebrate, there is always an ig tune that i can play. in fact, a
few weeks ago, i had a huge fight with my roommate in front of a bunch of my
friends, making all of us feel extremely uncomfortable, and everyone left. i
put in so and turned off all the lights and lit a few candles, and the phone
rang. it was my best friend who lives two hours away. (he has this sixth
sense about knowing when i'm upset) when i answered the phone, he knew right
away that something had happened that was devastating to me because i had ig
on in the background! they really do help me get through a lot just by
sharing of themselves through their music. it really is amazing. do any of
you share the same experiences?

hi! i think there songs are played at the right speed. i have heard some
played faster and slower. i admit they were good, but i like the original
tempo better. i have been listening to 1200 curfew lately. love the album.
i am looking for people to chat with this evening so page me on !cq. i am
doing pretty good. trying to act like everything is normal, because i can
not express my feelings of what my coward of an ex girlfriend did since
they are so homophobic. i am doing pretty good. i just turned off my
feelings and pretend i never knew her. so i am over her in away, but not
over her since i never learned to grieve. i have received so much hate that
i turned that emotion off so no one can hurt me again. sorry i didn't mean
to say any of this. i came in to talk to the girls music so ignore that
little bit. i like the 1200 curfews disk one i find it relaxing when i am

well, one person wrote "not to flame" but to "warn" me about how you all
might react to my amy and leonardo dicaprio comparison. it was a random
funny thought, not meant to infuriate anyone. the cocaine deal with
leonardo is true but good god, i was not trying make light of drug
addiction. i didn't mean that in being amy's sidekick, emily was less of
a musician! she is her musical partner, that's what i meant! geez, i
feel like i have to be so careful and choosy about the things i post. if
you were offended, maybe you read into it a little too much. it's too
nice out to stir up bad feelings guys so...let's end it here, okay?
happy thoughts to all...counting down till dartmouth...cate :)

indigo girls announce tour dates
kids, here's another reason to stay in school: the indigo girls
are bringing their show to you. amy ray and emily saliers are
catering to their fans in the under-twenty-one crowd by booking
gigs at high schools and colleges across the u.s. this spring. the
duo will kick off their acoustic scholastic tour on april 13 at
loganville high school in loganville, georgia. the girls will wind
their way across the south, with occasional forays up the east
coast. following the school tour, the girls will hook up with
sarah mclachlan's lilith fair in time for the opening date in
portland, oregon.
the indigo girls aren't drowning in estrogen, however. they've
teamed with an unlikely collaborator: tom morello of rage against
the machine. the guitarist has remixed the girls' "shed your skin,"
from their recent album, shaming of the sun. the release date for
the single is not yet set.

hi!
this is completely nigc, so you are warned before reading further..........
(and i apologize for wasting b/w!) and i have crossposted this to both the
ig list, and the atlanta artist list because i know lift has a big following
in both areas.
there was a small write up in the very popular local paper, creative loafing,
this week on the breakup of lift. basically it was just a press release, said
the same thing that was forwarded to the list last week.
it would be nice if they had a picture of how the fans felt, if you still
support them, etc. perhaps those of us who had an opinion on the subject
could write to gregory nichols and let him know our opinion on this topic.
their email address is: letters.atl@creativeloafing.com. or if you want to
do it the old fashioned way: letters to the editor, creative loafing, p o
box 54223, atlanta, ga 30308
thanks!

hey kf,
has anyone ever noticed that during the song sf, on the sf album, it sounds
like someone (i would guess amy) breaks a string at about 3:24 in the song?
it's during the 2nd riff(?), before the last verse. if anyone has any
insight on this i would love to hear it, it's been bugging me for awhile
now.
thanks,
lanie

hey kiddies :)
the mtv website has a portion of the new sys remix on it (which i really
liked). it is also reporting that the remix will be the next single.
the url is:

if you want to read other news first, try this path:
1) go to http://www.mtv.com/mtv/news_launch.html
2) scroll down and click on "more headlines"
3)scroll and click on "indigo girls to tour high school and college

hi...apparently the ig show on april 17th at the u of memphis will be a

advertised outside of campus. (never mind that it is being spread it all

hkf,
well, it is official, i am headed to see the indigo girls on my 20th
birthday!! i am totally psyched. my question to all of y'all is who else is
going? e-mail me or something, we should try and meet up. i am traveling
from the gainesville enemy territory of tallahassee in the afternoon after my
last class here ends. it is just a thought. e-mail me privately or
something.
another question, it will be my birthday that night and it would be awesome to
have the chance to either get them to sign something or actually even get up
onstage, if you have any pointers on how to do so . . . please let me know
through private e-mail. i would be very, very appreciative. thanks!!

"for students and their guests" -- meaning that, like yale's "free,
outdoor event" -- non-students will require a student with a valid id to
get past security. <grrr>

just to clarify a few things - the address i included in my last email about

the "official" lilith fair tour schedule won't be announced until
thursday, april 16.
so, i'm sure that no tickets for any lilith fair shows, including july 2
at bonner springs, ks, will be available for sale for another couple of
weeks. sorry. :-(
however, i'm sure that once that info is known, some thoughtful person
will dutifully post it to the list.
:o)

hey y'all. it's me (christy) and cathy. :) we just wanted to share our
wonderful experience at the atlanta dogwood festival with you all. we sent
to see gerard mchugh....but michael lorant and sheila doyle were there
also. michael played drums and sang a bit, while sheila gave her support
in the crowd. needless to say, the concert was amazing. i've never seen
mchugh perform, but he was great. right before he started his final tune,
he said, "this is a song i wrote that the indigo girls are singing on tour
right now." then michael pipes in and says, "it's ok, we asked their
permission to sing it today!" after little laughter (very small crowd!),
gerard says, "they own this town!" then, of course, they sang thin line! i
half expected the girls to show up, but they didn't.
we're going back to see danielle howle and the tantrums tonight and
big fish ensemble tomorrow! we'll post more later on those concerts. i
would highly recommend checking out a gerard mchugh cd!
christy :) (and cathy!)

hi everyone,happy daylight savings time!
as some of you probably already know, vh1 is doing a program on the
100 greatest artists of rock and roll. so far our girls have not
actually been in the countdown but they have commented on other
artists in the countdown. now i've only seen up to artist number 60,
but i'll keep you posted on any new developments. so check out a &
e's comments on these artists.
the band-amy
"they encompassed the idea of sharing music with different people and
always having different people a part of your show. they were just
loose, you know?"
tina turner-emily
"the strength of her voice, the way she dances, and she's so sexy, and
her energy's so positive; she has perservered."
grateful dead-amy
"they're just so killer. it's like the whole thing- the audience out
in the parking lot, all the people camping out, just the sense of
camaraderie. and that band just-they taught everyone how to embrace
their audience."
hmmmm, i think something in amy's last comment rings true about us (ig

i think that's definitely part of the appeal of the indigo girls for
me. there are lots of bands who make really good recording artists, but
just aren't great onstage. (*cough* wallflowers *cough*) the indigos
really develop a special rapport with the audience when they're onstage.
the only person whom i've seen who does better is michelle malone. we
were 5 feet from her on hot blacktop at deer creek music center (indy
lilith fair), sweat dripping from everybody's forehead, and she took the
entire 50 person audience through the range of emotions in a 20 minute
set. blew us all away. and then stepped into the crowd and started
chatting.

hey yall...
sorry for the wasted b/w and i promise this will be my last post about our
damn show, but i have a bunch of t-shirts left over from our concert with
sonia from disappear fear. i was wondering if anybody would be interested in
purchasing one. they are 10 bucks, all proceeds go to the sexual minority
youth assistance league. basically they are white, with the smyal logo on
front, and on the back the name, date, venue, sonia's logo etc. and the smyal
slogan "because everybody neeeds a safe place to be who they are." we are
trying to get rid of them because we want to make as much of a donation as
possible. so if you are interested email me.
secondly, i stood in line, in the freezing rain from 6 am to 11, trying to get
tickets for this big show in dc, hfstival, usually like 16 bands for 16 bucks,
and it always sells out. i was next in line when it sold out. (but i am not
bitter) i got my tix anyways. my point being the "original" b-52's are slated
to appear. so since sara is not touring with the girls anymore, was she an
original member, or does anybody think she will be there, or could find out,
cause if she is, we are gonna make a sign or something for her. ok...i have
said enough...

office to send your list dnoation for amy's 34th birthday to the zapatista

it appears they need help more than ever!
there is a start-up organization in decatur (nana) and the national
organization (ncdm) providing relief to the zapatistas and supporting the

both organizations. after you send your donation, send your name and amount
donated to elizabeth at elizabeth.nitz@evolving.com or
elizabeth_nitz@hotmail.com.
elizabeth will keep a tally of the donations and present amy with a

hey y'all,
i'm writing a paper on emily dickinson and the fact that she was a
lesbian. one of the questions i am concerned with is whether or not her
lesbianism really matters? what significance does it have in the study
of her work? is a person sexuality important in terms of his/her work?
if anyone out there has any comments or sources that would be helpful,
please e-mail me at txosbo01@morehead-st.edu.
thanks a lot.

here are the winthrop words i decipher from the warfield show, (there is
one word that i can't make out.)
emily prefaced it by saying "this song is sad as hell, sorry y'all".
when we get back to winthrop
a few miles from the airport
on a plastic chair on a deck where my friends live
i watch the taking off airplanes
watch the ocean waves crashing
i know with all of this movement, something's got to give
down at the high tide
it's passed down through the family
the fisherman gather to complain about the catch
we talk about time
then we talk about tides
the pull of the moon and the coffee deep (dark? night?) black
i listen to them
and i listen to you
for someone there is something never coming back.
but for all that we've been through
for all that we've promised
your wayward direction seems insensible
words fall out like breathless fish
all flopping and scattered
and hearts picked over deemed dispensible
down at the high tide
we're there for our last meal
the broken loaves are still enough for all
we talk about time,
then we talk about tides
the pull of the moon and the coffee deep ? black
and i listen to them
and i listen to you
for someone there is someone never coming back
we talk about time,
we talk about tides
the pull of the moon and the deep ? coffee black
and i hear the dim roar
of the last flight out
and for someone there is someone never coming back.

subject: danielle howle and the tantrums (nigc)

morning! christy and i (that would be cathy) ventured back
out in the freezing cold yesterday afternoon to piedmont park
to catch the *free* show by danielle howle and the tantrums.
wow. she's just too darn cool!
they sang for about 45 minutes, including two of the songs she
did on the ig ppv special. in true danielle style, she told
these random stories between songs that sometimes made sense
and sometimes related to the situation, but mostly not! ha!
gotta love her!
before one song, as her bassist was warming his frozen fingers
on the heat from the spotlight, she told us that her whole
outfit was only $10! she bought the purple denim jacket in
a thrift store in portland for $10 and the rest was free! he he!
she was, as we were, so very proud! and rightfully so!
she thanked us all for coming and braving the cold. and then
gave a special thanks to "that group of people right there"
who she called her "daemon family" and said she was most happy to
have them there to support her. we kinda thought amy might be there,
being such an intregal part of that "daemon family" and all,
but alas, no luck.
after the show, christy and i stuck around a few minutes to sign
up for her mailing list and say a quick hello. when she was finally
finished packing up the gear, she came over and chatted for a minute.
we told her that the show was great and we were really glad that
she came and it was great to meet her. she said thanks, and that
she was headed to eat! gotta love that greasy festival food!
it was a great show and danielle is so much fun! we're headed out
again this afternoon to catch big fish ensemble at 3:00. whoo hoo!!!
later kids!

last night was our college's all female a capella group's (as
opposed to their rivals, the co-ed capella group) annual a capella
festival. they debuted six new songs...including galileo! not a fantastic
version, but not bad. also, i was up at the crack o' dawn this morning (who
invented daylight savings? i *need* that extra hour! give it back!) to join
the outdoors club at a ropes course (i'd only done low ropes before...). i
fell asleep on the way, but woke up to shame on you coming over the radio
just as we pulled into the driveway. it made it an even nicer day (it was
beautiful but rather cold, and i discovered a not-quite-paralyzing fear of
heights which i had to overcome since my girlfriend was hanging out at fifty
feet in the air like a monkey, and i'm rather competitive about being able
to do anything she can - other than that it was okay).

mime-version: 1.0

hey folks,
i found this review of the pete seeger album on the cdnow
site (http://www.cdnow.com).
-sherlyn
===
full title: where have all the flowers gone: the songs of pete seeger.
producers include: rod mcvey, david seitz, ani difranco, bruce
cockburn, ysaye m. barnwell.engineers include: column sands, paul
dieter, david seitz, bob doidge, tom tucker.includes liner notes by
pete seeger, ani difranco, jackson browne, jim musselman, bruce
cockburn. contains a 28-page booklet for each disc.
pete seeger's gift to american music cannot be overstated. using
basic, often biblical themes, he created and interpreted a body of
work which is ingrained in the american national consciousness, and
helped to further define the american musical tradition. appleseed
recordings head jim musselman undertook the task of creating a tribute
to seeger, bringing together some of the finest contemporary musicians,
folk and otherwise, to interpret some of seeger's songs. a standout
track is "my father's mansions," contributed by british folk/rock
troubadour and woody guthrie historian billy bragg and violinist eliza
carthy. seeger disciple ani difranco offers a disarmingly tender,
delicate reading of "my name is lisa kalvelage." the most unusual track
on the album, the indigo girls' take on "letter to eve" features
processed vocals, elaborate percussion and production tricks. seeger's
standards are well represented: "where have all the flowers gone" is
given a poignant treatment by tommy sands and vedran smilovic; jackson
browne and bonnie raitt sing "kisses sweeter than wine," and nanci
griffith performs "if i had a hammer" along with a band of notable
seeger devotees.

hey all!
happy monday (yes i'm kidding...). well so i just wanted to let a bunch of you
out there know that the photos are finally on their merry way to all of you.
everything is being mailed out today so you should have them in a day or two
(unless your name is chris a. or leah, in which case they'll be coming along
with your requested boots in the next few days). if you're waiting for anything
from me, it will be out by the end of this week. i can't stand looking at it
anymore. sorry about all the delays! i'm retiring from this whole thing until
i have at least 20 hours a day to devote to it!
oh one igc related question...does anyone know if a boot of the sacramento show
exists? that switch that they made at the end between blister and ctf is quite
special to me (even though i was on a plane while they were performing it) and
i'd love to get a copy there's one out there. anyone? thanks! take care and
may the force be with you (i know i could use a little right now)....

when i first listened to sots i thought it sucked. really! and for 8
months i only listened to the first 3 songs (after listening to the whole
thing once through), and then i heard #5... that
made me think, hmmm. maybe i should listen to this thing again... i fell
in love with it, and listened only to everything starting at #5 for about
3 straight months, over and over and over and over....
yes,my first impression definitely changed. those later songs are very
powerful!

mime-version: 1.0
content-type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"
howdy ho, listees! i received the following info (thanks to gail anthony:)
about the may 8th date that was previously classified as "tba". the will be
a benefit for chiapas to be held at the backyard in austin, tx.
read through the entire story because it also includes info about the sys
remix. apparently it will be a limited edition cd that will be sold at the
lilith dates. not sure if that means it will only be a limited edition, or
if it will be released as a single too.
(so, who's going to any of the lf shows and will be kind enough to buy me a
copy or two???? please e me privately to work out the details. thanks! )
here's the story...
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------
the list of celebrity-studded benefit concerts will grow by one on may 8,
when the indigo girls, shawn colvin and steve earle will headline a charity
show in austin, texas.
additional musicians may join the concert lineup at the backyard,
contributing their efforts to aid the zapatistas in chiapas, mexico.the
concert site, austin, is home to accion zapatista, which has protested the
recent massacre of 45 mexican citizens by paramilitary officers in the tiny
town of aeteal, chiapas.
the charity show will close out a three-week string of live indigo girls shows
at high schools and colleges across the south and up the east coast. the
singer-songwriters will open the tour at logansville high school in georgia
on april 13 and finish the adolescent expedition on may 7 at irmo high
school in columbia, s.c.
"(the indigo girls) made a conscious decision to play for their younger
audience, specifically the real young ones who don't get to go to the
concerts late at night,"
said epic records representative lisa markowitz.
missy elliot, sinead o'connor and erykah badu, among others will then join
forces with the indigo girls on june 19 for the kickoff of the 1998 lilith
fair festival in portland, ore. lilith fair vendors will sell limited
edition indigo girls cds featuring various live cuts and a version of "shed
your skin" remixed by tom
morello of rage against the machine. that hefty re-worked song should begin
circulating on college radio this month, markowitz said.
(anni layne)

it's not at nyu, as previously thought -- but *very* close to nyu!
**note**: tix are *not* yet on sale. (probably on fri or sat, apr 10 or

hi everyone,
since many of us post whenever we see the indigo girls mentioned in books or
magazines, i'm tossing in some tidbits of info from sources that most of the
people on this list probably don't read. very small tidbits, but it's nice to
be reading and see the girls' names mentioned!
in the book simple abundance by sarah banbreathnach, she mentions the boys on
the side soundtrack as a joyful simplicity and particularly singles out the
indigo girls' "power of two."
in the current issue of new moon magazine, a very cool magazine for girls,
there's an article on the lilith fair and a brief quote from amy ray. a small
photo, too.
in totally private & personal, a book on journaling written by a 14 year-old
girl, the indigo girls are mentioned twice---and the book is dedicated to
them, because the author is so inspired by their music.
in the new book, a tribe apart: a journey into the heart of american
adolescence, one of the girls featured in the book performs "love will come to
you" at the graduation dinner. she's a girl who's had problems, and her
performance of the song brings the audience together in a very touching
"spiritual experience" where she finally feels understood.
as i said, nothing earth-shattering, but it's always a nice surprise to have
an indigo moment when you least expect one.
and...i have to share this too...i usually lurk so i apologize for rambling
on, but i am so proud of my daughter...she is 11 and is the only ig fan among
her group of friends. she has been teased about her passion for the igs
(especially amy!)----while most of her friends are identifying with the spice
girls. well, the other night, at a sleepover, she took along shaming of the
sun and a boot, and introduced her friends to the wonders of amy & emily. the
responses ranged from "cool" to "not bad" to "i'm getting this cd!!" so now
she's not the only ig fan in her middle school.
yours in indigo,
joanne:)

hi, i am coming out of lurkdom to send a message from sulli (guitar tech for

she is here with me so i am going to let her type. thanks j.a.
hey yall,
i am writing to yall to let you know of a vigil that will be going on
friday night at the mexican consulate. i am a member of the north american
neighborhood association and we are having a peaceful protest at the atlanta
mexican consulate
in memory of all the people who have been slaughtered including the 45 men,
women and children in december. i want to encourage everyone in the area and
others who choose to travel to come out a be a part of this. we are going to
have 45 crosses to carry in memory of those slaughtered in acteal. since our
group is very new, we don't have that many members and need people to show for
this. even if you don't really know that much about the situation, please
come. this is the first ever protest of the atlanta consulate and it is
really important to have a good showing.
i know this is probably a lot to ask of people, especially if you don't
like to get involved in politics and all but this is about human rights.
anyway, heres the info and i hope to see you there.

agreed---there's nothing wrong with going to learn about a cause, or to
support something you already believe in, but mindlessly following any
cause is bad, whether or not it is the "right" cause.

it is a good occasion to find out about whats going on.. open your eyes
and see whats happening to our world and what you can maybe do to try and
make it better...
of course if you already know that you dont support it dont go.

well...what better way to learn than from the source in action? and as long as
they don't plan on handcuffing people to the crosses then i would guess people
are free to leave at any point during the demonstration/rally. these people are
defending the freedom and human rights of certain indigenous groups, i can't
imagine that they wouldn't respect the decision of any of us to participate or
not. don't you think?

i could find very little to like on sots on first listen. i liked
"everything in its own time" and "get out the map" (i finally
understood what y'all meant about the banjo!) and "don't give
that girl a gun", but i didn't know what to think of "burn all the
letters" or "leeds" and i absolutely hated "shed your skin"
and "cut it out." it took me a while--it was only a couple of months
ago that i was able to listen to "cut it out" and really like it--
but i am happy to say that i now love every song on the album.
except "hey kind friend." sorry, amy, but it's boring.

respectfully, lauree...this is not really a new issue on this list.
the organization sulli mentions is on the list for which money is being
collected for amy ray's birthday. i certainly respect wanting to know
more about an action before participating, and i think that is a
very good thing to do. i think instead of asking what would
people's motivations be for attending, it might be better to
ask what the intent of the rally is, and what, besides a
march, would be taking place? i think mmost everyone on this
list takes their politcal actions very seriously. but it
is also certainly true that we dont all have the same
approaches to political action. i have an ex gf who is
very radically political, esp around some environmental
issues....while she tries to pressure me to join her in
her issues, i dont. i go about things differently. the
march sulli mentions is not meant to force anyone to do an
action whic is not comfrotable for them. but at
the same time, if we dont know about what actions
are happening, on any level, no one can participate.

oh, god, here we go...i agree that the post from sulli
was "not meant to force anyone to do an action whic [sic]
is not comfrotable [sic] for them". it basically
asked people to show up for a political protest whether
they knew anything about the issue about which the
protest was taking place or not because they need bodies.
personally, i take exception to that.

hi all
i just got the new issue of the honor the earth newsletter and found
some very disturbing information within. apparently there is a movement
right now in congress to put a "temporary" nuclear waste dump near yucca
mountain, nevada. the article points out, in fact, that every new proposed
nuclear waste dump in north america is set on native lands. i also read
something about the penobscot tribe here in maine fighting a local paper
company over dioxens in the water--apparently lincoln mill doesn't care
that the dioxens they put in the river go through the reservation. there's
big business for you.
maybe in your day to day lives you can think about these things and not
do anything, but if you decide that this is an outrage, the article
suggests calling your senator or representitives (remember, reps are up for
election in november so they are listening) and the number for the capital
switchboard is 202-224-3121. i know that there probably isn't much for you
non-mainers to do for the penobscots, but as for the nuclear waste
proposal, call. encourage your friends to call and write. write letters to
your local newspapers...
while i'm sure that honor the earth will keep updates at their website
about issues like these, you can also start checking out my site that will
have info about this and other organizations and situations all over the
country at
http://www.geocities.com/westhollywood/heights/6243/action.html
remember that it is still under construction and has virtually no info on
it right now...but any suggestions and/or comments are welcome!
peace,
sharoane

in a message dated 98-04-06 16:25:12 edt, you write:
>>if someone doesn't know much about the situation, why should they go?
>>what if they end up being part of a political event they don't support?
why are people arguing about this??????
imagine if you will, you are walking down the street and police forces come
out of nowhere and kill you and everyone around you .. for no other reason
than you were there.. you lived there and they didn't like you or your kind..
humanism is not a policical event.
wouldn't you hope that someone came together in your memory to stop actions
such as this?? fortunately we live in a country where this isn't a regular
occurence.. but for some people, our brothers and sisters in the world around
us.. this is something that they deal with every day and it smacks of nazi-
ism.
nobody is asking anyone to " get involved in a political situation that they
don't support" they are simply asking for you to get involved as a human
being.
to show that you care for other human beings, and to hope that in showing up,
somehow someone will get a message and end the brutality.
it amazes me that people will jump on a bandwagon to fight for the causes of
amy and emily.. just because it is amy and emily. it takes more than sending
money to an organization once a year on someone's birthday..( please don't
take offense to that remark for those of you who are involved in that effort)
or going to an hte concert.
it takes showing up, being counted and in this case, making a statement that
slaughtering innocent human beings is wrong!!
period... dot...end.. it is wrong.
later on..

hey kind friends-
you know, i always liked sulli for being so nice to help fans take home picks
and set lists after shows, tipping us off when the girls were in the mood to
chat a bit afterwards, and i really admired her for how hard she busts to get
all her work done, before, during and after concerts. somehow she always
manages to remain kind and gentle to all of us screaming fans! when others
(coughdaveellisoncough) have not been so nice, and we as a list have wondered
why he's part of their team, we always used sulli as an example of the
kindness and humanity we have come to trust in the indigo girls and in the
experience it is to be their fan. somebody even recently compared it to the
deadhead community.
so, on that trust and admiration alone i would kindly receive sulli's request
to go to this memorial service. who could agrue about respecting the dead?
besides, as fans of amy and emily, this is not a new issue at all. they have
been desperately trying to educate us on the issues around the zapatistas in
chiapas for 2 years now, at concerts, through songs (chiapas bound), in
printed materials and their newsletters have detailed their personal trips
with photos and personal letters. this latest massacre in december has been in
the news for months. this is not a small regional issue-there are action
committees on my local campuses and i live in new york! i don't think it is
unreasonable to assume that members of an ig list would have a basic working
knowledge of the issue, or to consider that those of us in the area would go
and support this effort, even though we learn the details while we're there.
since i don't live in the area i can't attend, but my thoughts and prayers
will be with those that can.

btw friends~
this is an excellent reminder of how much the ig's and amy think of
the zapatista rebel cause and how much amy (and emily :) would really
appreciate getting support from us to aid the chiapas situation for amy's
birthday gift from the list. so, let's raise at least as much moola as we
did last year ($2,500) for amy's birhtday.
i don't know how much we've raised so far, b/c elizabeth from denver
(b-day chair) has actually been in chiapas the past week and perhaps we
should all give her a warm thought of returning home safely and much wiser
from the adventure. elizabeth, are you back yet? i sure want to hear
those stories! :)
<ahem> but amyray, i'm sure we're no where near $2,500 so far, so
please give whatever you can afford - $5, 10, 20 -- 100 or more!?! here's
the directions~~
there is a start-up organization in decatur (nana) and the national
organization (ncdm) providing relief to the zapatistas and supporting the
struggle for indigenous rights in mexico. you can donate to either one or
both organizations. after you send your donation, send your name and amount
donated to elizabeth at elizabeth.nitz@evolving.com or
elizabeth_nitz@hotmail.com.
elizabeth will keep a tally of the donations and present amy with a
"check" of the amount donated sometime near her birthday on april 12th
(that's *next sunday*, y'all!!).
here's the addresses to send your donation to:
------------------------------------
local atlanta chapter:
make checks to: north american neighborhood association.
send to:

decatur, georgia 30033

i loved sots from the day it came out. it came out on my gf's
birthday (or at least, the day of the party we threw - i can't remember
whether they were one and the same) and i bought it and the cake that
afternoon. then i went home and listened to it four times nonstop before the
party started: while i cleaned my room, when jenn came over
and...um...helped me clean my room ;) , while i cleaned my room some more,
and after everybody had showed up...by then i liked every song except for
leeds, but especially soy, sys, and dgtgag...i remember listening to those
a few more times. by the end of the week, i could put soy and dgtgag in my
own setlist if i felt like it...long story short: i liked it then, like it
now.

no offense taken here elizabeth and i support the more direct action
you suggest. yet is more convenient for some just to donate some bucks to a
great cause. of course, they have to make up their own minds if it's a
cause worth donating to -- or not, they can simply donate b/c a&e like the

yet, i have more faith in ig fans. i think most of us are critical

if some of us get enjoyment and satisfaction by supporting a worthy cause,

at a & e's new electric sound. i wouldn't go as far as to say i
didn't like the album but when i heard ulali wailin on certain tracks
on the album i thought "what the hell were they thinking?" but i went
on a road trip the weekend after the album came out and since it was a
family trip-headphones were a necessity to prevent a multiple homicide
:). that weekend i listened to the album over and over and it grew on
me like a climbing fungi ;). it seems to me that most ig songs are
like that, they do not lend themselves to being catchy-poppy
soundbites. you have to let the girls melt into your consciousness,
and after that happens you wonder how you ever survived without them!

some people might come after them with camera and some may with
guns....or something like that. well anyways, i am doing an english

mime-version: 1.0

ok< i don't usually write, i just read the list but i knew staying
connected would come in handy. to begin with, i have been a fan of ig
for 8 years, and have been to 9 concerts. i have met amy once and spoke
to emily once also. i am graduating in one month and leaving gainesville
and god (or whatever divine power you believe in) has granted me amazing
closure, my biggest wish, a concert in gainesville and the opportunity to
be backstage. i will be a runner at the concert and have a couple
questions about this. but i don't know where to begin...what does being a
runner really mean? other people who have been given the opportunity to
meet ig, how did you fell? i mean, i was immediately euphoric when i
found out that all my butt-kissing finally paid off (ha ha) but then my
joy subsided and now i am completely anxiety ridden. this could be a
great moment for me or really anti-climatic. i think this may mean too
much to me, like i could put way too much significance into a quick hello
to amy or emily. so basically my question is how do other people deal
with this feeling, what is it like to meet them backstage or at a meet and
greet, will i actually meet them as an equal (you know, a person with more
to say than i love your music, you move me...) and how can i get through
my butterflies...if anyone, i mean anyone, has advice on what i should
wear, say, do, how i should act, if i can approach them, or hang back, and
how i can come off as semi-normal (usually not a problem in the real
world), then please please please email me...and i may be expressing my
latent natural defensiveness, but in any other situation that did not
involve the indigo girls i would not need advice on how to act...i guess
being in the presence of the group that has helped me cope with life at
such a crucial, turning point time in my life is converting my brain
to mush...thanks for listening
finally in indigo heaven (if it all works out)

content-type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

hello all,
sorry to take up bandwidth. i am sorry if i didn't come off very
clear in my earlier message. most of you don't know me so you don't know that
i often am not clear. today my mind was scattered in a million directions and
i really didn't think about what i was saying before i said it. so, i am
going to try again.
the whole reason i posted to this list is that i know there is a lot of
support here for the zapatista struggle. as a member of nana, i know that
we've already seen the outpouring of support through your contributions. to
date, we've received checks totalling $620.00 from this list in honor of
amy's birthday. in fact, because of your generosity, tonight we were able to
meet with and contribute to a caravan that is delivering emergency aid
directly to the refugees of chiapas.
i am a political baby. i have never done this kind of work before. i am
going into this as blindly as anyone, but the reason i am active in this
cause, active for the first time in my life, is that in the past i have always
stood by, sent my money in, but never done anything. i have never before made
an effort to learn about an issue. it's just that with this issue, i kept
hearing about it from all my friends, and i kept hearing about why i should
care about this struggle. what i have learned is that my money (taxes) is
going to help these paramilitary groups kill people. i learned that what the
zapatistas believe in is just as important in my neighborhood as it is in
chiapas. i am taking the time to learn about the struggle in chiapas and the
more i learn, the more i see how much work there is to be done.
in my first post, i said:
even if you don't really know that much about the situation, please come.
when i said that earlier, i wasn't thinking about my words, and i wasn't
being very clear. i want to make sure that everyone understands what i meant
by that. i said the vigil at the mexican consulate was a peaceful
demonstration in the memory of the vicitms of acteal. i assumed that anyone
who was interested enough to come to the vigil would be there because they
were already familiar with the massacre of those people. this vigil is a
peaceful memorial. no arrests. no handcuffs, just people, hopefully, gathering
together to remember the victims and to make a statement that we know what's
going on and we're not going to let our tax dollars be spent arming
paramilitary groups who kill innocent civilians.
it's really important to have as many people there as possible, so we can
get press coverage, because there is just no coverage in the mainstream media
about this struggle. so when i say we need bodies, what i mean is, we need
concerned, open-minded bodies - people who already know about the situation,
or people who want to learn more about it.
thanks for letting me clarify this. if you want more information,
*please* visit the nana website at:
http://www.mindspring.com/~teddie
or the national commission for democracy in mexico website at:
http://www.igc.org/ncdm
thanks yall,
sulli
ps - by the way, i'm not a political spokesperson (yet!) - i'm just a guitar
tech.

hey! would anyone going to the show in memphis tn email me please? i am

get in. question is--how many guests can a student bring in. i have
access to several potential students. maybe i can help someone else out.
anywho, lemme know if anyone is going to be there. and do you realize
tennessee has like 5 separate shows? what is up with that. for a place
amy couldn't wait to leave, i am a tad shocked at the attention the state
is getting.
oh and to add to that other thread about whether sots has become more
likable--i'd have to say nay overall. i'd say it has gotten more likable
than since i first bought it but it is still my least fave album to date.
please bring us an acoustic album with no ulali or other background noises.
sots lacked songs with great harmony which is feel is ig's strongest
point. take rop or nis. what recent song has golden harmonies like those
in world falls or love will come to you. i miss that. hope we get some
soon. :)

i like almost all of their stuff, but i have to say that sots is
definitely their most eclectic presentation to date. and that's good.
there are lots of happy folkies out there. dylan realized that in 1965.
then he plugged in.
if somebody wants to get into the ig, i refer them to 1200 curfews or
sots. the other albums are wonderful, beautiful recordings, but they are
just that, sterile recordings. however, 1200 and sots are more
organic---1200 because it was done live, sots because they recorded
specifically for a live sound. there is more raw energy, and to me,
that's what ig music has that very few other bands can accomplish.
it's not too hard to write a catchy pop hook. it's not too hard to
write a political song. a lot of people can sing, and there are
bazillions of halfway decent guitarslingers. what is tricky is tying it
all together, establishing a special rapport with the audience, and
delivering the goods with high intensity, which is something sots lays on
thick.
perhaps i'm a bit coloured. i love baroque/romantic/classical music,
country, blues, jazz, and almost everything under the sun, but the stuff i
loved the most when i was a kid was straight-ahead heartland rock. like
mellencamp and springsteen, the stuff of cheap bars and one night-stands,
that turns your foot to lead on the accelerator. (thunder road with
melissa etheridge and the boss, anybody? wow!) so from the first
distorted stratocaster thump of shame on you, i knew i was going to love
the album.
amy ray once said, when asked about folk music and ani difranco, that
punk is actually a lot more true to the world/folk tradition than the
"folk" genre these days. which i believe to be true. all the other
albums were great. but with the latest two releases, they proved that
they have mastered american music, in all of its unique forms, from the
hip-hop drum loops of shed your skin to the protest of burn all the
letters, the blues of tangled up... and the rock spirit of shame on you.
works for me.

in exchange for the music. i'm willing to negotiate, but really i just want
these any way that i can have them.
thanks.

me, too! at first, i didn't even like ig when i heard nis, my ig
introductory album. it was a gift, and it sat on the shelf for about 3
years. then, swamp ophelia came out, and a friend hauled me to a concert.
i still didn't like them. then, i got the album as a gift. still didn't
like them. then i got live at the uptown as a gift. still didn't like
them. then i began wondering, why are people giving me all this ig stuff as
gifts? i watched the video again...still didn't like them. then i watched
it again ( i used to use the video to put me to sleep) and i was geting
sleepy when blood and fire came on. i was absolutely captivated for the
first time by amy's raw emotions. i began to take a closer ook at ig and
since fall of 1995, i have become a dedicated fan, after almost 4 years of
putting them aside.
now i can't imagine life without them. someone mentioned that they found
hkf boring...i thought so, too, but after listening to it over and over
again, it has grown on me. i am amazed at people on this list who heard ig
for the first time and were instant fans...what a time saver!!
i wonder what it is about ig that makes some like them instantly, and others
have to work at it at first? i have never put forth so much effort to see
what ll the hype was about a band, but i'm glad i did!!!
anyone else?

this isn't really an unexpected place, but definitely unusuall. i was
eating lunch yesterday in tony paco's. now for all of you who remember
the the tv show mash you know what i am talking about. for everyone
else, it is a hungarian restaurant in toledo, oh famous for there sausages
and pickles & peppers. well, their stick is to have famous people sign
hot dog buns whick are then displayed throughout the place. they everyone
from the last 4 presidents and famous public figures, to entertainers from
all areas of modern american culture. it is truely an experience to eat
there. now, about the bun itself. it is identified as indigo girls and
signed by amy and emily just as they appear on stage. just another
useful indigo tidbit.

well...this was the album that finally hooked me, but that is probably
because i finally got around to buying any music.
i liked it at first. then, after i heard all the older albums...i liked
those better, and put sots last. now i gave up on ranking because its
growing on me again. maybe thats because its getting warmer...like last
summer, when i continually listened to sots. i don't know.

hi everyone! made it back from the most incredible trip of my
life. highlights included getting to talk to bishop samuel ruiz,
refugees in san cristobal, people from conai, the head of the
acteal investigation, two members of that 200 person european human
rights commission, two zapatista commandantes who traveled
all day from the jungle to oventic to talk to us, and many people
from human rights groups. i will be writing up a number of
reports, and will post them to my web page. in the meantime,
read the most recent stories i found, they are very important:
http://members.tripod.com/~wwactivism/chiapas.html
this should give you plenty of motivation to donate, which
leads to my next point...
about project amy -- we have a bunch of new donations,
excellent, but still only about 40 people have donated! not
even 1000 bucks have been pledged. you have until mid
next week (15th) before i leave for atlanta to present the
certificate. again, donation information is at
http://members.tripod.com/~indigoempire/projamy.html
also, i'm going to be in washington dc may 24-26 for a
chiapas conference -- can anyone spare a bed? anyone
want to come along?
elizabeth from denver, heart still in chiapas

i can't speak for everyone, but i can easily sum up the reason i fell head
over hells for the girls upon first listen. i heard their music for the first
time about six years ago (11th grade) and thought - "how did they know?" i
felt like they were singing about me, to me (i don't mean in a schizophrenic
kind of way)- it changed my life. for the first time i felt like my voice
could be heard and was being facilitated by these wonderful women. i will
always be grateful!

helloooooo!
does anybody else remember listening to modern rock live, and hearing a sample
of the up-coming album when the ig were on in early april last year? i heard
dgtgag, and completely fell in love. i guess at that point i had convinced
myself that sots would be wonderful, and i don't think that it disappointed me
when i first heard the album in its entirety. it was, and is, most definitly
different, but it was the girls, and it was new, and it had been so long...so
it was wonderful. whether or not it is the best album of course will differ
from person to person, but it still posses that unique quality that each of
their albums trademark. why else would we talk about when we listen to
certain albums at certain times in our life, or during the year? someone said
that sots was growing on them again because it was almost summertime, and
around the time that sots came out last year; i completly agree that this time
of year is a sots time...i think all the albums are all so wonderful, but it's
interesting to hear how many people are more partial to the previous
recordings!
just my 2 cents!!
(p.s. sulli rocks!! i think sara may have some competition for ambassador of
goodwill!!) ;o)

hey yall
so what is sara doing now ?? does anyone know who she is working with ?? i
guess my reasoning behind this as i posted before, is i dunno if she counts as
an original member of b-52's but they are playing the ever-popular whfstival -
16 bands for oh now its 30 bucks this year, as opposed to 16...anyhoo. so i
wanna know if she will be playing with them or how i can find out... any help
would be appreciated...

hey everyone
i am (hopefully) attending the indigo girls concert at one of the high
schools they are going to. i dont actually go to the school, but i have
friends there and hopefully they can help sneek me in. besides, how can i let
the girls do a show 5 minutes away from house w/out me in the audience singing
right along with them???
i heard a & e were going to talk to us at the show. they were going to
play and talk and play and talk some more. i was getting excited about maybe
being able to ask them a question or tell them something. i was wondering if
you had the chance to say something to a & e or ask them one question what
would you ask/say??
thanks
marcy

hey everybody,
i know that there has been a little confusion about this, so i just wanted
to let you know that the tickets for the virginia slam! benefit concert on
monday april 27 at the irving plaza in new york city go on sale tomorow
starting at 12:00 pm, i believe. the tickets are $30 and doors at the show
open at 7:00 pm. it is general admission. you can get the tickets at
ticket master, but you can also get them at certain music stores such as
tower records, hmv, and some others. if you have any specific questions
you can call the slam! hotline at: (212) 802-7226 there is a machine and
it has more specific info about the concert. i hope this helps.
take care,
chloe
p.s. if the tickets at ticket master are not listed under virginia slam!
then they may be listed under indigo girls.
