>i'm not really sure that she's saying faye or fred.   i was under the strong

it was a *neat* intro, at least in dallas. it also sounded just like faye
and not like fred.

of course, now that someone's said fred, i can feel my memory drifiting
already! i'm infected! aagh!

no, really i'm fine, to much awake and not enough sleep. later.

the girl who threw her panties on stage was smashed. she also danced around up
front for awhile and tried to sneak (and did until she was caught) backstage.
she was waiting around with us after the show for awhile. and yes, i do think
the lights were in response to "we'll just play 'em all." too bad =(

well friends.. i don't usually post to the list, but i read it
religiously.. so to speak anyhow. i guess i am posting now to just blow of
some steam about ticketmaster and money hungry venues. i just learned that
out of 3 michigan lilith dates one is already sold out of pavilion seats
and the other two dates are going fast, this is before individual sales
have even started. it is all because of the stupid pine knob series
tickets.(you know where ya buy tickets for three concerts you get three
more free) well for poor lil ole me who has just enough money for one
concert, looks like i won't be getting a chance at the good seats to see
my beloved ig this year either. look out lawn..  here i come (not happy
about it.. but i wouldn't pass up a chance to see the girls.. even if it's
from far away)
anyways.. thanks for listening.. if you haven't gotten this far and not
hit the delete key yet!

those concerts-- that pay-per-view one especially-- but i couldn't get
any of them.  a little window would appear on the screen saying 'opening

would come on saying that application had not been found.  so what's up
with this application?  can i download it for free from anywhere on the

<<   i was a little disappointed because they didn't really play any old
stuff,
except for i don't wanna know and ctf.  almost the whole setlist was from rop
and sots.  i was very surprised to hear caramia though.... she hasn't played
it since the beginning album tour has she?  i have to say, i liked it much
better without all the string instruments and extra stuff that is on the
album. >>

the song i wish they would have played was "touch me fall".  that would have
fit into the rockin' set that they played.  if i would have gone to this
concert without knowing any of their albums, i never would have called them a
folk group.  not that i don't like their folk stuff, i do, of course, but i
like that they rock, too.

and while i'm here, i might as well say that i seem to have forgotten yet
another song they played the other night and no one corrected me :)  they
played "three hits" as well.

i was standing on the emily side of the stage and watching her play guitar was
an awesome experience.  she sings so softly on her records but gets totally
intense on stage with her guitars.  whereas i knew amy already had the passion
inside her, i didn't know that about emily until i got to see her live. they
both get so emotional.   i don't know if i'm going to like going to a show
where i'm sitting way in the back and can't even see them.  i think i was
spoiled.  maybe i shouldn't go to any more concerts - ? :)

when i got home i couldn't get to bed for hours because my legs were killing
me.  they were still hurting when i got to work but it was totally, totally
worth it.  i could have danced all night.  i told my co-workers that i was an
18 year old for the day :) i need to do more of this and i'm definitely
planning on it!

lot* of season ticket holders but it is possible to get pavillion
seats....last year we sat about 3/4 of the way back in the pavillion and
while they're not great seats, they're not bad and it's better than
trying to fight for a seat on the lawn.  plan to be there very very early
like as soon as the place opens if you want a seat on the lawn.
according to the newspaper ig will be playing the first 2 dates at pine
knob.....the only artists playing all three dates are sarah (of course)
and natalie merchant.....if there are any more questions i can help
anyone with, let me know.....i'll see what i can find out......

on another note, did anyone see dar wiiliams on conan last night??

i know the misunderstood lyrics discussion was awhile back, but i was

came on i realized i have always thought the line " here is a dancer,

well, i don't know about jewel, but i did read once somewhere ( i
think it was the paula cole list) that tracy chapman refused to let
anyone capture any of her performances, either video or audio (why i
don't know).

as for jewel, anybody feel she's starting to fade away already....is
she even going to do any lilith dates?  every list of artists i've
seen has not mentioned her as being one of the performances.  hmmmmm

by the way, how much did yall pay for that cd?

jewel is doing a tour of her own this summer..  that is why she isn't
doing many lilith fair dates.  i like jewel to a point, but mostly stuff
that isn't played on the radio.  i think her major problem is she needs
another album!!

wasn't sure who to forward this information to, but thought maybe
someone could spread the word on what is happening here in columbia,
south carolina.  according to this morning's the state newspaper, the
indigo girls were scheduled to perform a small concert at spring
valley high school.  when parents found out that amy and emily are
lesbians, complaints were filed and the principal cancelled the
concert.

to lodge a complaint or an opinion, you can call the richland county 2
school distric office at 803-787-1910.  or e-mail the public relations
officer of spring valley high school at pwendt@richland2.k12.sc.us

to read the full newspaper article, go to www.thestate.com.  it is the
first article on the page.

south carolina school cancels indigo girls concert

irmo, s.c. (reuters) - a south carolina high school principal has canceled
a free concert by the grammy-winning indigo girls after parents complained
about the lesbian singing duo, a school spokesman said wednesday.

the indigo girls -- singers amy ray and emily saliers -- were scheduled to
give a free half-hour concert during a may 7 talent show at irmo high
school north of columbia, s.c.

"the principal canceled it. after it was made public that this group was
coming, he got a lot of phone calls from parents and others raising
various concerns ... one of which was the sexuality issue," spokesman
buddy price said.

parents also complained about a rock 'n' roll group playing at a school
assembly, he said, and the principal canceled the concert because of
protests that were "polarizing" the community.

the indigo girls concert was lined up by the school newspaper, the
stinger, because of its participation in a national network of student
newspapers that interview contemporary musicians and review new albums.

the indigo girls, who won a grammy for best contemporary folk album in
1989, currently are on a three-week tour of u.s. colleges and high
schools. the week before the irmo concert, the duo has scheduled concerts
at three tennessee high schools.

the indigo girls released their latest album, "shaming of the sun," last
year, and will be featured in this summer's lilith fair, a national tour
headlined by female artists.

hi -

i'm a 38 year old, married, straight mom of two 10 year olds and an avid
indigo girls fan.  i read on the indigo girls mailing list that there was a
concert scheduled at your school, but that it was cancelled due to parental
complaints about the girls being lesbians.

i wanted to take a moment to voice my strong disappointment in this decision.
i live in kentucky, and i know that discrimination and prejudice based on
sexual orientation are still rampant in the south.  change takes a long time,
and often it starts with small moves, like allowing a concert by two of the
most prolific and talented musical artists of our time.  i can imagine it
would have been very hard to make the decision to hold the concert over
parental objections, but i personally wish you had done so.

i am familiar with typical pop music available to our teens today, and in my
opinion much of it has no message beyond materialism and the party mentality,
is totally inappropriate, violent and way too sexual (any hip hop song you
choose).  on the other hand, i challenge you to examine the lyrics of any song
by the indigo girls and find anything but an inspirational message in it.
yes, any song.  they write and sing eloquently about relationships between
people, the questions we all face in our daily lives, and none of their lyrics
are very sexual at all!  they are frequently called the bob dylan or joni
mitchell of our day.

i'm a good mom, and i'm very concerned about my kids' education.  i want them
to grow up free of prejudice and accepting of diverse lifestyles.  after all,
they will surely encounter a large variety of people in their adult lives, and
it will be to their benefit to be able to deal effectively with all people.
the fact that amy ray and emily saliers are gay is not a factor in my music
choices, nor should it have been in your concert choice.  they are excellent
folk/rock  musicians with a clear and positive message for our young people.
i think they need to hear that message!  i'm very disappointed that there
still are places in this country which would cancel a concert simply because
the artists are gay.  your action certainly does not set a very strong exampe
of tolerance for your students, and that's what you're there for, isn't it?

i encourage you to listen to the indigo girls, and judge them solely on their
ability.

sincerely,

bonnie lacey

hey all, i just thought i'd mention one other little tidbit about the concert
that had me cracking up....
after one of amy's intense songs where she jumps into the air at the end
and slams down on her guitar like the true rock star that she is (scooter boys
maybe???), she kinda landed badly and stumbled backwards, almost crashing into
her amps and falling over.  that was pretty funny in itself, but then she went
and took a sip of her coke, and spilled it all down her shirt!!!  she had a
big wet spot for awhile. :)  she and emily had a laugh about her crazy
antics.... they are just too cute.  ok that's it.

i apologize to anyone who doesnt care, but i cant just sit still while
jewel gets trashed multiple times on this list without any defense
(think how all y'all would feel is the girls were being trashed on
another list you were on). i would be willing to bet that those of you
who dont like her probably only dont like her because 1) her songs and
her became so popular and were played to death and 2) the songs that
were played on the radio were no where close to being her best songs.
(or the third reason could be you hate her because she is beautiful)
there is no way that jewel is fading fast. anyone else who is on the
jewel list as i am knows that that list is much bigger and much more
fanatical about jewel than this list is about the girls.
and about her needing a new cd, she was basically screwed by her record
company because she had a whole cd basically recorded already when she
first started gettting big. the record company didnt want to release a
new cd while pieces of you was selling so well. so she went on tour
forever and then started working on a new cd becuase by now she is tired
of the other stuff.
jewel tours as vigorously as the girls. and the thing that amazs me so
much is the rate at which she writes songs and performs them. it seems
like at every other concert she sings a song that she says she wrote
last night. and then you never know if you will ever hear it again. she
has said that she encourages booting for this reason because she wants
someone out there to save all of her different songs, otherwise she
might forget about them and they woud be lost.
my point is just that i dont want anybody out there to dismiss jewel
easily. even if you dont like her cd, it may be just because that cd is
so old for her and raw that her best songs, her most mature and most
developed songs, are not really on that cd for the most part. just
because she became so popular, dont overlook jewel.

alright.  i have to vent for a minute.  i am very very upset.  see,
there was supposed to be an ig concert at a student assembly at the high
school that i graduated from on may 7.  it had been made official and
was in the paper and everything.  well.....today i look at the newspaper
and find out that it has been cancelled because they changed their mind
and no longer think the indigo girls are appropriate enough to play at a
high school!  i couldn't believe it.  the paper said that they had
several parents call in and complain.  now, what makes me even more mad
is the fact that student assemblies at this school are not mandatory.
if a student chooses not to attend, he or she can go sit in the study
hall room instead.  so it makes me soooo mad that they would cancel it
because a few parents call in when their kids don't even have to go see
them if they don't want to!  i'm planning to call the school tomorrow
and voice my disapproval.  i know they will not come out and say it, but
i am willing to bet that the reason they decided not to let them play is
because they are gay.  and this really upsets me tremendously.  do these
parents and teachers think that amy and emily's "gayness" is going to
rub off on their children or something?  it's rediculous.  i'm ashamed
to call that school my alma mater.  sorry for ranting on like this, but
i am completely and utterly disgusted.  if it weren't for the concert in
greenville that i'm going to tomorrow, i think i would be throwing eggs
at the houses of the people who got the show cancelled......

lilith fair

sarah mclachlan, paula cole, and more (arista)

in its own earnest, peasant-skirted,  incense-dosed manner, last year's
lilith fair tour forcefully shoved a number of lessons down the throats
of the music industry. it proved, for instance, that an all-women tour
could (a) be taken seriously, (b) attract large crowds and make a profit,
(c) embody not merely the heightened status of women in pop but also the
new sincerity and romanticism of the post-alt-rock universe, and (d)
attract men, even if they were goobers who came to ogle jewel.

now comes the souvenir, lilith fair: a celebration of women in music, a
double-disc compilation recorded at various stops on the tour and
featuring 26 of its participants. (its also a semi-benefit album, with
half the proceeds going to rape, abuse, incest, and aids organizations.)
it turns out we can learn a thing or two from the album as well,
including lessons not even troop leader sarah mclachlan may have
intended.

a dose of indie rock would have been nice. grrrl rockers were dubious of
lilith, and not simply because of its prissy name. acting as if distaff
punkers like sleater-kinney and fluffy didn't exist, the organizers
leaned toward musicians who specialized in genteel, touchy-feely,
sensitivity- session pop. lilith did, on occasion, rock - the show i
caught featured a blistering, gritted-teeth set by juliana hatfield.
alas, the album's idea of energy amounts to clunky, mannered arena rock
from meredith brooks and tracy bonham or the overly placid indie pop of
september 67. exception: the wild colonials' bounding "charm."

the tour truly was lilith-white. another criticism leveled at lilith
was that it served up genteel, touchy-feely, sensitivity-session white
pop. again, the discs support this carping all too well - they're
dominated by encounters with intent, humorless folkies of the caucasian
kind. dar williams takes us through her therapy sessions in "what do you
hear in these sounds," while a wan, verse-trading rendition of the folk
song "the water is wide" (with mclachlan, jewel, and the indigo girls)
is the stuff of pottery barn in-store playlists. organizers may have to
hire more paramedics for this summer's tour; the slew of soul sisters
joining in, including erykah badu and missy elliott, could give the
audience a collective heart attack.

not everyone, male or female, knows what's best for a compilation. it's
one thing to celebrate "the diverse mix" of the tour by concentrating on
up-and-comers. it's another to omit some of the most prominent
lilithites - fiona apple, sheryl crow, tracy chapman - in favor of
pale-voiced jewel imitators and rockers whose idea of roots is pat
benatar. plus, the big wheels who are here, like cole, brooks, joan
osborne, lisa loeb, shawn colvin, and suzanne vega, aren't represented by
their best-known, or best, songs. the ultimate lesson to be gleaned is
dispiritingly simple: as an album, lilith is only fair.

baigls are boston area indigo girl listees.

about a year ago, several listers in the greater boston/new england area
got together became friends and decided to start their own little
sub-list so that they could just talk among themselves about music and
happenings of specific interest to those ig listers in new england.

of course once word got out, there was naturally some regional jealousy
expressed on the list of the unfortunate kind: "we're better than you
are! nah-nah!" this silliness eventually died out; however, it still
gets revived several times a year. ususally it begins in jest by friends
poking fun at each other -- as pooh and mike have so eloquently
demonstrated for us all, both in their own unique way. then, however...
other people, who think they're really serious, tend to join in... and
ugliness ensues.

btw -- there is also a seattle/pacific north west sub-list too.

for those who live in those 2 corners of the us and want info --
for baigl info: write to: amy p <monk@world.std.com>
for pnw-list info: write to: lynn c <lynncar@microsoft.com>

*please* don't write to me about them.

and for the record, i just went up to new england to go to the dartmouth
and yale shows -- and was privileged to meet several baigls. and
contrary to popular list belief -- they do *not* all have horns and
tails (at least not the ones i happened to meet!). in fact, they were
all very civilized and polite and nice and sweet and friendly and funny
and cuddly!  ;)  <grin>

hi y'all!

i didn't get there until six, when i got out of my car, it didn't seem
like i'd need my umbrella.  lol!  i thought it was mass confusion, poor
planning and i am really upset about jill and lizzy!  jill:  what was
the last thing i said to you?  be careful.  yeah well, i am so glad you
two are alive and safe.  i never did get to meet any listees, i asked
everyone i saw if they were listees and was greeted with weird stares.
i was in the middle, i couldn't believe they opened only one door,
during lightning even and the proceeded to frisk us.  like indigo girl
fans are gonna carry guns.  yeah right.  so i sat by my lonesome, soaked
to the bone, cold (shivering) through out the concert which was the best
i have seen so far!

my sign got water logged, it said "amy-emily"  i am missing x-files for
you-for me, so please pick me to sing!  but it was so wet that i am sure
they couldn't read it.  i thought they were better than ever and when
amy said "wow, i broke 2 fingernails, its a great show"  it made her
seem so "human"  it was a riot when she hitched up her pants.  i thought
emily looked like she has lost weight since i saw them at bethlehem in
the fall, she looked great.  one question:  does amy wear the same shirt
at every concert?  she has had the same one on at all the concerts i've
been too!

i broke down and bought under devil moon (mm) it is so awesome!  all you
michele malone fans, i know why you lover her music now.

gotta run, time to do payroll.

okay, so i guess i won't spend paragraphs and paragraphs complaining about the
horrendous conditions of the dickinson concert (although as i waited in the
thunder/lightning storm for hours, wedged between billions of people, i
thought of all the clever, obnoxious things i could write to the list about
this) but i will say, in short, that it was the best setlist i've ever heard
them do (and may i repeat that when amy turned around and did a little hop to
pull up her pants, was quite a moment?)  inside the gym it was so wet from the
sopping-wet people, that instead of the usual security guards saying don't
run, or we'll kick you out - it was more like, don't run, or you'll slip and
die.  in front of the stage i was (once again) wedged somewhere around the 2nd
or 3rd row, smack in the middle between a and e.  the, er, so-called fans to
my right were the most obnoxious girls i've ever encountered, smoking butt
after butt and making out so much that i couldn't even see what was happening.
don't think it was any of y'all, but if it was, i'd still like to reprimand
you...  now, was security and their wonderful frisking so tough that no one
managed to boot the concert??? that would be a shame...

i had a great weekend, meeting lots of fellow listees and baigls.  actually,
it was the most awesome weekend of my life because i met both amy and emily,
both together and at separate times, and i'll just reiterate what everyone
else who has met them before has said - they are the sweetest, kindest, most
down-to-earth people...  i don't have the time, energy, or state of mind to
describe it all - but i think the funniest part was driving down the streets
of new haven, spotting amy going for a run, and asking her for directions for
our hotel - without letting on that i knew quite well who she was. very proud
of myself.

so shawn mullens was pretty cool, huh?  julie was so awesome!!  anybody know
if they have a web page or if there are any pics up of them?  i'd love to see
more...

peace,
~flora

hi

after reading about the cancellation of the show in south carolina
because amy and emily are gay, i just had to pipe up about something
that drives me nuts.  please don't flame me.  well if you feel you must
then go ahead.

i have been to 3 ig concerts now, including lilith at montage last
year.  i can't help but notice all the apparent lesbians that attend.
okay, yepper, i am straight and i don't have a problem at all with
anyone's lifestyle, but when i look around at the concerts and see these
old women (even older than me-41) who look like they came to the concert
because its a lesbian event, they don't even seem to enjoy the music (go
figure).

it appears to me that these people are there only because a&e are gay,
and not appreciative of the awesome music they make.  i have been a
rocker since way back, but i have never ever found music so touching, so
enlightening, so warm, so moving, that i would seek out every piece of
it that i could lay my hands on.  i listen to them almost constantly,
sing their songs while i am golfing, and will continue to attend as many
concerts as i can till i die, or they retire (please don't retire).

now i can appreciate that same gender relationships would feel
comfortable at an ig concert, but i have seen some things at ig concerts
that i have never seen at any other concert.  straight people don't
ordinarly make out, touch privates, etc in public, why do the gay women
feel that ig concerts are a ticket for explicit romantic interludes?  i
know that gay people have very few places they can be "out", but the
bedroom stuff should stay in the bedroom for both straight people and
gay people.

now i know that a bunch of you all are "true fans" and lesbians, don't
you all see the same thing?

well i bet a rattled enough cages, i better shut up.  i am just blowing
off steam.

peace, hugs and butterflies!

karen

hey karen...

i'm not going to flame you about what you said on the ig list...a lot if it is
true i suppose...but there's a certain feeling of freedom in being somewhere's
in public where you know you can hold the person who you love most in the
world's hand and not get stared at or beaten up or whatever.  the only people
that i saw at the austin show last year that weren't into the music were the
60 year old straight people that we got to sit next to.  i'm still not sure
why they were there, but i have a feeling it wasn't for the music.
anyways, i guess what i'm saying is the majority of people are there to
experience the thrill of live ig music, but some may go to have a good time
and to feel at home with people who are the same as they are.
i do disagree with too much affection in public whether gay, straight, or
whatever. there's no excuse for that i suppose...people must get carried
away...  :)

anyways, i hope that gives you a little insight into why we do the things we
do...(isn't that a song?)...

take care,
amy
(who's counting down the days until the austin show!)

well, i'm a lesbian, 35 years old, who enjoys the fact that i can go to an
indigo girls concert and feel safe yelling for amy and emily.  i like that the
audience is mostly lesbian but i also like that there are men in the audience,
too.  it shows that the girls are for everybody--regardless of gender and
sexual orientation.  it is  possible that some of the older women don't have
the energy to dance and scream like the younger people.  i was at slam the
other night and i danced a little and sang along but certainly not to the
extent that some of the young college students were.  it certainly doesn't
mean that i wasn't enjoying the music.  i was having the time of my life!

furthermore, there are not a lot of places where dykes can go and just be
themselves, so if two women want to hold hands and hug at a concert, then
that's wonderful. they certainly wouldn't be able to do that at a black
sabbath concert or an ice cube concert.

i don't know if this has been covered on the list recently, since i was off
for a while.  but, does anyone know why the girls decided to play at the
michigan womyns music festival this august.  i thought they were against
playing at all female events.  i know throughout the years they have been
invited to play there, but always turned it down.  whatever the reason, i
couldn't be happier to see them at such an awesome thing....along with
michelle malone, who is also playing there later in the week.  just one more
thing, is anyone from the list planning on going?

hi.

i am really disheartened by the news that the ig show at that school in sc
was cancelled.  as soon as i got that post, i forwarded it to a bunch of
people i know -- not necessarily ig fans, but people who will be as
outraged as i was.

so what if the girls are lesbians?  i have no problem with homosexuality,
so for me that is no big issue, but i think that some people need to look
past that.  the girls are not *just* lesbians.  i think that they are
wonderful role models for young women everywhere, gay or straight.
actually, i remember thinking quite highly of the girls when i was a
teenager (i loved them since i was 12...).  i looked at them in amazement
and thought "i'd rather be like them than the waif-like woman on the cover
of 'teen' magazine."  at the time, i didn't even know that they were
lesbians.

the principal at this school obviously can not see past amy's and emily's
sexual orientation.  it just really pisses me off that people still think
like that.

does anyone have an address of the school?  i would like to write a letter
to voice my complaints about this matter.  ugggggg!  let's escape from the
1950's...

okay, off to study more (finals start on friday...uggg!)

i got this from an aol newswire:

last year's leading ladies are captured live
on the double cd ''lilith fair: a celebration of
women in music'' (arista). included are 25 tracks
from what is widely acknowledged as the most
successful festival tour of 1997. in addition
to the main-stage performers, the album features
acts from the second and ''local'' stages. included
are tour founder sarah mclachlan, paula cole, the
cardigans, abra moore, lisa loeb, september 67,
suzanna hoffs, suzanne vega, joan osborne, emmylou
harris, shawn colvin, yung chen lamo, tracy bonham,
and many more. a highlight is mclachlan's collaboration
with jewel and the indigo girls on the classic ''the water
is wide.'' half of the album's proceeds will go to tori amos'
rape, abuse, and incest national network and to music-
industry aids charity lifebeat. this year's lilith fair begins
june 19 in portland, ore.

i also just found out the ig will appear on a clash tribute
album to be released aug. 25th.  other artists on the
release include rancid, no doubt, mighty mighty
bosstones, and silverchair.  part of the proceeds
will benefit children's hospital of los angeles high

hey!  lots to comment on here.  first i am sure that whoever wrote the
above has already received her share of flames.  i won't add.  i will say
that i once thought like this--why all the lesbians at ig concerts?  of
course that was before i came out.  as someone else posted--there is
something nice about having a place to feel comfortable just being
yourself--especially when one really can't in most places as a
homosexual/lesbian.  an ig concert creates an environment where one knows
there is good company around who aren't going to have a problem with gay
people.  i used to never understand why minorities tended to group
together.  i always said stupidly--that's why they're discriminated
against--because they are always separating themselves.  well now i am part
of one particular minority and really understand why i have many more gay
friends than straight ones.  it's just a matter of relating better and
feeling more comfy in my mind.  we have more in common overall.  getting
back to ig--i think many lesbians go to ig concerts because it's a place to
feel comfy even if they aren't into the music and i am ok with that
personally because i experience it.  go to an erasure concert and you'll
see gay men everywhere.
i do agree however that too much pda can be offensive.  public
groping is nasty no matter who is doing it.  however, as i posted last
summer when this came up regarding lilith--this is a concert and a public
place.  i would personally be more offended if i saw someone doing drugs at
a concert but i know that is part of what comes with going to a concert.
at a baseball game, it's gross watching players spit and grip themselves
(unless it's derek jeter :)  ) but you know that comes with the game.
groping lesbians are going to come with an ig concert.  live with it.
ok other events on the agenda--the cancellation of the show in
south carolina just stinks of suckage.  i am not surprised though.  does
anyone have a clue in hell why ig chose to play high schools in the rural
south?  just seems like this was bound to happen.  this is like having an
israeli independence parade in iraq.  i mean alabama shut off the ellen
show last year.  whoever is booking their shows needs a new job.  ig should
be playing in places where they are going to be allowed to play.  it just
goes to show you that as accepting as the world has become there is still a
very long way to go.  i have asked this before but can gay people who live
in the south please email me privately about why.  i am seriously curious
to know how people can live in a place where there is so much direct
intolerance.  i would go crazy.  i understand about community and how there
is always some support, but to know that most people who don't even know me
wouldn't let me sing songs to their children because i like boys is a scary
thought.  thank god for urban life....
....good segue into how much better chicago fans are than baigls.  don't
get me wrong--i'm a big jew and love bagels and lox (esp on sunday mornings
in ny), but puuuuhhhh-lease to this debate.  there is no comparison.  yes
boston gets more concerts--but look at who is booking these shows--the same
person who schedules them at some bigotted high school in s carolina.
hardly a claim to fame.  and to all those confused--this is a long standing
joke and is not real.  i love boston and sus marine is clearly awesome in
her own right.  but as a collective bunch of fans--chicagoans take the
cake.  we love ig and have lives :).  love you guys

ok that's way more than i have said in awhile.  see ya

i think it's the same principle as the women walking around naked at the
mwmf-- it's a matter of visibility in what one considers to be a safe
space.  the aura at ig concerts is a very gay-friendly one.  many women
seize this advantage and yeah, make out and grope and whatever in
public.  ig concerts are one of the very few places around (another
place being my school, oberlin!) where those usually in the minority are
in the majority, or are at least very vocal about it, so it seems like
an okay thing to show, eh, lots and lots of affection in public.
we are desensitized to heterosexuality.  heterosexual couples make out
and whatnot in public all the time, and we usually don't even see it.
why? because it's the norm, it's what's in the media, it's what we grew
up seeing.  so we overlook it; so maybe that's why it seems like
straight couples aren't "rubbing their sexuality in our faces" but gays
and lesbians are.
and, yeah, speaking on behalf of disgruntled viewers of pda's (public
displays of affection... ingrained in me thanks to north olmsted high
school's handbook of rules) everywhere, the bedroom stuff *should* stay
exactly there.  get a room and get it out of my (bitter?) face!

okay y'all, first i want to thank all those who responded both
negatively and supportively.  the funny thing is that all the nasty
reply's were personal, well so were a few of the supportive ones.

i'd like to reitterate one thing.  i love amy and emily too.  their
music is the greatest.  i was sitting behind many "lovers" and it
bothered me.  when my husband and i go to see "live" or fuel or boc or
anyone else, i don't notice pda's.  yeah, i guess its cause "hetero" is
more often seen and expected.  but i'll tell you what, if i had been at
a live concert and there were couples close by me who looked bored,
couples beside me who were making out, i'd be wondering about that too.

the list provides all of us fans, straight and gay, the opportunity to

i am not homophobic.  i apologize to those i offended and i appreciate

well, greg, says who they didn't take that into consideration and chose
specifically to play those venues anyway?  i do have an idea as to why they'd
specifically choose to play in problematic places - to raise the issue.  and
why live in a place with such direct intolerance?  well, if you care about a
community, people in general, if you believe that they can be better than
they're being, you don't just get upand say "screw them, i'm outta here, i'm
going to find me a better place."  you try to educate them, and sometimes that
means getting burned.  i'm an orthodox jew with some pretty radical ideas, and
believe me my community is not exactly *happy* with me, but i care about them,
i think there is so much potential for beauty and goodness that i put up with
the crap and simply voice my opinions as loudly as possible in order to make as
much of a difference as possible.  and just by speaking to people i've already
started them thinking about things that they had (conveniently) settled in
their mind without much previous thought.  yup, i'm going to do my bit to make
the world a better place.

the fact that this high school chose not to have the girls play is probably the
worst thing it could have done if it wanted to avoid the issue - cuz now
they've made it into an even bigger issue, dontcha think?  and all the kids who
would've never thought twice about a&e being lesbians, well, now they're
talking about it all right.  the parents who caused this are stupider than can
be believed, imho.  hopefully, a lot of good is going to come out from this.  i
just feel sorry for the kids who missed out on hearing two of the most amazing
musicians of our day and age....

greetings choochies,

a favor to ask from the taping maniac of the list:

when you ask someone to copy a bottleg for you, drop in a little note
reminding them (ahem, me) what it's for. i do so much dubbing of so many
artists at the same time, when i get your tape with no note i say
"hmmmm....jane....jane sounds like a name of a person who likes bikini
kill" and take a guess. that's probably not good, if you're an ig fan and
you get a bikini kill bootleg. so, do your tapers a favor and include a
note k?

but it's not.  the school is irmo high school.  evidently spring valley high
school was offered the chance to have the concert, but they turned it down
fearing this sort of a controversy.  then irmo high school was offered the
chance to have the concert, and they accepted.  they're both in the greater
columbia area i think (but i could be wrong about this).  y'all know the rest.

i'll venture a guess.  they're from the south.  maybe not from the
real rural south but from the south nevertheless (and i bet that decatur was
a lot less city-fied when they were kids than it is now...but someone from
atlanta can correct me if i'm wrong about this :)  ).  furthermore, they've
made it abundantly clear that they love the south (most obviously, consider
the fact that they've never left it).  so while touring in the south might
seem crazy to everyone else, it probably seems only natural to them.
i once read an interview where amy said that south was the best of
everything and the worst of everything all rolled up into one, and i pretty
much agree with that. this sort of explains why even enlightened southerners
(no, its not an oxymoron) love it so much even though it has so many
problems.
one last thing.  i read the article in the south carolina newspaper,
and while the fact that the show was canceled completely sucks, i found some
of the kids reactions really heartening.  some of them are really angry
about the decision and the reasons behind the decision, and they are even
trying to organize some sort of a protest.  i  found this pleasantly
surprising, and and i see it as proof that things are changing (at least
slowly).
oh yeah, just so y'all know my bias, i'll admit that i am from
walterboro, south carolina population 7,000-10,000 (depending on how you
count it), and if that's not the rural south, i don't know what is.

jeez, forgive me.  i sent the message yesterday about the cancellation of the i-g concert in sc.  i got my info. second hand and didn't double check the sources.  the story is true, but the district is wrong.   joe bonds is the superintendent for lexington county 1 and his e-mail is jbonds@lex1.k12.state.sc.us
the phone number for the district office is 803-359-4178.

so sorry for the misinformation, i'll be more careful next time.

wasn't sure who to forward this information to, but thought maybe
someone could spread the word on what is happening here in columbia,
south carolina.  according to this morning's the state newspaper, the
indigo girls were scheduled to perform a small concert at spring
valley high school.  when parents found out that amy and emily are
lesbians, complaints were filed and the principal cancelled the
concert.

to lodge a complaint or an opinion, you can call the richland county 2
school distric office at 803-787-1910.  or e-mail the public relations
officer of spring valley high school at pwendt@richland2.k12.sc.us

to read the full newspaper article, go to www.thestate.com.  it is the
first article on the page.

first of all, i'm certainly not 15...i'm in my 20's...and second of all i'm
mature enough to take a diplomatic approach and try to take into consideration
everone's point of view unlike yourself.   maybe you should work on your
maturity level a little.  and maybe you should have the guts to post your
appology to the whole list not just to me.  how's that for "wishy-washy".

hi.  i've had a few people ask me for the address and phone number of
irmo high school (my lovely alma mater that is so bigoted they cancelled
the indigo girls show to "protect their children from lesbians)  so here
is the number and addy.  i have called about a dozen times and the line
is busy.  but i will keep trying until i get through.  and i hope some
of you will consider writing a letter of complaint to the school.

also, in the article in the newspaper it said that hootie and the
blowfish (who are from columbia, sc) are incredibly upset about this and
are going to try to schedule a concert for the indigo girls in columbia
and support them in any way possible.

thanks for listening,
sharon

hey all!

well the mad roadtrippin' duo (well this half anyway...deb?  are you out
there???) is back home from sunday and monday's concerts in ny and pa.  they
were wonderful as y'all have heard.  everyone (band, crew, fellow concert goers)
were soooo incredibly sweet.  and i can hardly believe it's over for the moment.
ack!  so i just wanted to post a few notes about the concerts before i forget,
but i'll try not to repeat anything all the other great reviews have
mentioned...

okay, so first thing's first.  soggy carlisle.  but worth every second.  first
time in a million years (okay more like 7 concerts) that i didn't get a setlist.
but that's okay.  i got a huge smile from someone special (ah!), and a bunch of
great response to my signs and stuff.  oh, just so everyone knows, i declared
last sunday "official sulli appreciation day".  mark it on your calendars, send
cards, spend your day doing "sulliesque" activities.  she's so incredibly sweet.
does she know everyone's name?  my goodness what a memory!  maybe not so much a
great memory, but just the effort to make the details matter.  very cool woman.
very cool.  so april 26th from now on.  don't forget!

alright, so i also held up a sign for julie and dave from lift.  most everyone
here knows the saga, so i won't rehash, but i thought it would be nice to let
them know how much our huge group is supporting them regardless of the band's
eventual fate.  so my sign just said that lift isn't gonna be lift without them,
and thanked them for the incredible memories of their 4 openers with the girls
in ny.  honestly if you never saw these people play you missed something
incredible, but it's still there.  whether it's backing shawn mullins or in some
other setting.  anyone who's seen either of these two groups live will testify
to that.  and julie asked me if she could keep my sign.  first time i've ever
had *that* request!  goodness if i'd known somebody was gonna want it i would
have made it a little prettier.  oh well.  sentiment is what matters, and she
and dave both know we are all looking forward to more great music from them...

mmmm...what else?  well the crowd was excited as heck ("energizing" according to
amy).  did we ever get the complete setlist?  i think so, but if not, and anyone
wants it, i can write that up too.

can you believe nashville?  i was stunned.  they must have been a little stunned
as well, cause they had each had a copy of the lyrics taped to their amp
speakers (well okay whatever those big speakers are that point towards them and
away from the audience).  i guess they were afraid of forgetting the words, but
they did an incredible job on the song.  i wonder what made them choose it for
carlise?  oh, and as a general consensus, i think we all adore the new/guest
harmonica dude.  can't make out the name.  was he local?

okay, the fingernail thing.  amy spent a good part of the evening staring at her
hand.  so here's exactly what she said:  "i've broken two fingernails already so
this is a good show.  i don't mean for you guys, but for us.  sorry.  that
sounded really egotistical.  alright, let's just really reverse that."

from there she breaks into world falls.  my question is this: why is it good for
them and bad for us if she breaks two nails?  i don't get the logic here.  it
was funny though, cause at least once she was so busy she didn't realize that
emily was going into a new song until she heard the opening chords.  and once
she held her hand out like she didn't know how she was going to play.  but as
with the downpours, it was overcome.

okay, chickenman.  okay, right after one of the choruses they go into a guitar
section and lately amy has been making this great yell, like "yip, yip".  very
funny.  the guitar solo that followed by emily was amazing, as always.  then
dave.  and seriously...this solo was good.  sometimes he seems like he gets
himself into things he doesn't know what to do with later, but this one had
direction and and interesting "pause, clap, clap, clap" thing from the crowd.
and has anyone noticed that part towards the end when amy's doing the chorus
again, and emily comes in behind her on the "i was looking for a car..."?
is she making it a little funkier lately?  both nights in pa and ny she sort of
plays with the intonation and rythym and the so it's not the usual pauses (i
went looking (pause) for a girl (pause) found a man) now it's more all mushed
togther and sounds *really* great.

okay, cut it out.  there's a part where amy's just screaming into the mic.
right before they break into wish you were here.  can anyone figure out what
she's saying here?  it's like "i'm so ________ now", or "i'm starting to get it
now".  something like that.  i can't figure it out, and believe me i've stared
at her mouth as she says it a billion times.  can anyone help?  oh and later in
the same song right as they are finishing amy goes between "i wish you were
here" and "baby".  and those "baby"s are so incredibly beautiful.  i think maybe
she used to do them far away from the microphone, but now she gets close enough
that we can actually hear them.

galileo.  hee!  emily's screw up.  very sweet.  she comes towards the mic while
still finishing the solo and squeeks out "ooops!".  interesting accompaniment
from the woman behind me.  veeeery interesting.

gone again/kakadu.  okay, i think i adore this song more than i have adored any
song in eons.  love the funky twangy feel!  sooo happy i got to hear this one.
and her whistling was impressive too.  even more so than the ctf part at the
end.

okay i think that's it for dickenson.  i guess a semi-important note will follow
this post regarding something y'all have been beggin' for for days.  keep a eye
out...

marivel

me.  but the recording leaves a little to be desired as far as sound quality, so
if anyone feels like coming forward with a better copy, please feel free.
secondly, i am *still* finishing boot requests from early this year, and cannot
possibly begin to take requests on this one until the others are out of the way.
it should be a week or 2 at least, and then depending on the response i might
decide to tree (despite the crappiness).  so you must be asking yourself, "gee,
marivel, what makes it so 'crappy'?".  well the acoustics sucked bigtime in the
venue.  it was a beautiful gym with high arched wood ceilings, but as far as
sound goes it bit the big one (big what?).  i just kept thinking about amy's
obsession with "muddiness" and sound quality, and trying to figure out why she
didn't manage to get things a little better given the marathon sound check they
had done while we stood in the rain.  okay too much info.  point is, i have a
boot as a backup in case nothing else surfaces.  it's not outstanding quality,
but you can hear the music and if it's the only one out there, it's certainly
worth listening to "romeo!" being shouted every 2.5 seconds.  but i'm not ready
to offer it up now.  i'll let y'all know, so just hang on for a few more days.
thanks...

marivel

p.s.  and tons of thanks go out to the resourceful "touch me here-deb" for
sneaking the recorder in in the first place!

first ig show.  the music was awesome of course, but what i remember the
most was watching all the people (strangers, yet strangely familiar)
around me holding hands, hugging, being playful, laughing, smiling,
talking, sometimes kissing, but mostly just feeling comfortable and
happy.  didn't matter if they were gay or straight, male or female.  i
felt completely overwhelmed and absorbed by the sense of unconditional
acceptance, community & love.  and i have only experienced that feeling
at ig shows!

thanks for listenin'...back to the grind
sheri g.

tangential indigo girl content

now, being a white heterosexual male i may not be quite as sensitive to
political incorrectness as others, but i had to interject here.  having
spent most of my life in atlanta and houston, but also in a few other
places, i must say that those two cities are very southern, and both seem
to me to be at least as tolerant of homosexuality, etc as cities such as
philly or boston or elsewhere in the country.  so this generalization
about the south being a bastion of homophobia doesn't really apply there.

furthermore, from what i know of rural georgia, south carolina, etc, it is
no more conservative and homophobic than, say, rural ohio or new jersey
or elsewhere in the north.  certainly there is plenty of homophobia in the
north just as much as there is in the south.  who was it, after all, that
said that pennsylvania is "pittsburgh on the west, philadelphia on the
east, and alabama in the middle"?

i'm just writing because i hate to see people fall into these
generalizations based on geography just as much as i hate to see people
fall into generalizations based on sexuality or race or gender...

of course, that's just my opinion.  i could be wrong.

the article in the local paper there made it sound like the school district
supervisor(? i forget this actual title), who's running for higher office,
is trying to make political points with the anti-gay conservatives.  by the
quotes in the article, the supervisor announced that the principal canceled
the show before the principal even decided it, perhaps to put pressure on
him.  the principal may be guilty of nothing more than lack of guts to
stand up to the homophobe at the district.  (for that matter, he might be
a total 'phobe, too.)  if you do write a letter, i'd suggest not accusing the
principal of personal homophobia - you can criticize the decision without
having to say that.  i really liked the letter that another listee posted
yesterday.

according to the article in the local paper there, the students invited them.
also,
the girls are southerners.  you think they'd turn down the invitation?  why,

okay hang on here
i've been to five ig concerts since 1994, including the newport folk fest,
and i've *never* seen lesbians doing what karen described. ahem...maybe i
was looking the wrong way. however, i've been to plenty of places--movies,
nonig concerts, fairs, etc. where i've seen straight people engaging in pda
like what karen described. i just look the other way--after all, no law
says i have to watch. maybe i'm really unobservant, but i've never seen
lesbians at an ig who seemed to be at the concert because they were
lesbians. however, i found myself at a melissa etheridge concert because a
friend dragged me and felt sort of like i was only there because i'm a
dyke...ack.

i have to agree with sharoaaaaane on this one...i've been to several
indigo girls concerts myself and had never seen any of the behavior that
was described...until dickinson...heh heh...in this one isolated case
i'd have to say that these chicks were there to shock the f**ck out of
people....i'm not easily shocked though, that's the thing. i'm easily
revolted and pissed off but things rarely shock me --
so i'm standing there, right?!  and these chicks are standing there
talking about explicit lesbian sex. i don't know about the rest of y'all
but i thought that was seriously inappropriate...and it wasn't as easy
as not looking, or not listening...this group of 5 or so were all over
one another....i'm talking a massive orgie right there in the second row
-- i was bashed in the head several times by one chick as she was
sucking on her girfriend's neck (it might be just me but heavy making
out doesn't seem appropriate during a song like "get out the map"  maybe
that's just me...maybe i'm weird. :), and after that i was just
generally pissed off.  it was as if they were saying "heeey! amy! emily!
look at us! we're gay!"  i don't know guys, this is the most serious
case of stupidity that i've ever encountered -- i don't apply that to
any *one* group...i just think that each case differs...there are some
people who don't have any self respect no matter *where* they are...i
just hope i don't have to see it again. :)
i don't really know what my point is...all o' this pda talk just got me
thinkin'. ;)

nashville was amazing! we heard it during the soundcheck too, and i wasn't
sure if they were actually rehearsing it or just using it while they were
setting levels...those speakers are the monitors, by the way: they let the
performer monitor the sound that is going out to everybody else.

that was sandy garfinkle, an old friend of theirs. he played harmonica on
the recordings of don't wanna know , and on nashville, and also on 1200
curfews, on chickenman. i think he might live in pa, since the version of
chickenman on 1200 curfews is from pittsburgh...

> from there she breaks into world falls.  my question is this: why is it

i think she uses it as a measure of how hard she's playing. she said that
made it a good show, but then she realized that what makes it a good show
for us isn't necessarily the same thing as what makes it a good show for
her.

re dave's solo on chickenman: he started it off and ended it with the riff
from "low rider" - i i thought that was really funny.

i heard it at the time, but i can't remember now- it was "i'm so
much----now" or "i'm so over you" or something...

hello all-

i've read the story on cnn us news and the entertainment updates they
send to my pager twice today!   i am editing my letter to the school
now.  hopefully everyone that can take the time to write a letter will
do so.  i only hope that mine is as well written as bonnies.  that was
great.

this situation reminds me of a bumper sticker i read the other day:

"if you're not outraged, you're not paying attention!"

i wonder what amy and emily think about the cancellation?

back to work...

hey ya'll, i roadtripped to dickenson w/a bunch of folks, one of whom was my
friend kathryn--a poet and a big ig fan, although not on the list due to her
fear of computers.  :)  anyway, she's finishing her thesis for her mfa and
this poem will be in it.  she gave me permission to post it and i thought
those of you who were there would like to share it.  the whole age thing
really rang true with me--especially since all of us tarp folks were near or
over thirty.  (sorry if it's long, but i want to respect her line breaks.)

sunday poem
(indigo girls concert, carlisle, pa

two dozen people huddle
in the battering rain, cheap
ponchos and anything plastic
overhead.  thirty degrees cooler
than yesterday, thirty degrees
cooler than tomorrow will be.
we are the early ones, crazy
ones who will wait ten hours
in a cold spring storm only to stand
another five against the stage
and a chance for our hands
to reach into the lights.  i am
too old for this now.  i know that.
the teenage girls around me only
emphasize my age with the fashions
i am almost afraid of, and an energy
for the rain and the wait.  but
it is sunday, and i still believe
no church can offer more to worship.
so i will wait with my friends, feeling
ourselves age as the cold settles
in our bodies, and we watch the girls
grow younger in front of us,
stripped from their layers and dancing
in the glow of their own skin.

hope you enjoyed.

maybe the reason that there is more pda at ig show is because more couples go.
i mean at other shows i've been to theres been more big bunches of guys or
girls together as friends, but if its an ig show, theres a bigger possibility
that some of them are couples, so, naturally they are gonna do their thing.  i
must admit that being straight i was uncomfortable the first time i was around
that. but now its no big thing and its definately not gonna stop me from
enjoying myself at any ig show!

and about the south, i think any big town, no matter where it is, is gonna be
pretty tolerate.  its harder when you live in a small town in alabama where
everyone has rebel flags and stuff.  but there are some cool people here too.
they are just a little harder to find.

nicole.

ok, i just have to jump in....what is the difference between two women and
a man and a woman making out?? to tell you the truth, they both bother me.
i dont like seeing two women all over each other, but i also dont like
seeing a man and a woman all over each other. i really cant understand the
differnce, so its hard to read all of this...everywhere i go i see hetero
couples making out, and i mean, i dont like it either...why is it only
that gay couples make people feel uncomfortable?? isnt that a bit of
prejudice and intolerance?? it's like, in both situations people are
expressing teir feelings, why tolerate one but not the other?? just what i
think...

also, about the concert being postponed- when will people grow up and stop
being so hateful and judgemental? its time to get past all of this "im
better than you" crap....i know plenty of hetero musicians who have no
talent and have totally degrading music...why do people tolerate that but
not amy and emily who are talented, and support women, native americans,
and other groups??

i dont understand!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...and i dont know if i want to...

subject:      the whole irmo thing....

well, as somebody in high school i must say that i'm not that surprised.
i don't think that it is a southern thing, cuz my school (in maryland,
which i guess is technically south...) is really bad about gay issues as
well.  we have assemblies for everything....aids, multicultural...but
whenever somebody (read: me) brings up having a gay awareness kind of
thing people flip out.  parents are very much against that.  i think that
it is a pity, because every day i go to school and see people who are so
incredibly ignorant, and, having faith in humans like i do, i always
think that if they only knew then they wouldn't be so outrageous.  it is
a shame that high schools don't feel that they can approach the issue --
it is very real -- the suicide statistics are way up there, and i see
people struggling all of the time, but sadly some schools are just not
safe.  anyway, just thought that i'd stick in my two cents, and also
applaud amy and emily for trying to go and reach their young (and poor!)
fans :)  (not that older ones aren't poor as well, you know what i
mean...)  here's to hoping that one day the high schools might see the
light....

love,
carolyn

school cancels indigo girls concert

.c the associated press

columbia, s.c. (ap) - a free high school concert by the grammy-winning indigo
girls has been canceled after parents complained about the lesbian duo.

the may 7 concert at irmo high school by amy ray and emily saliers was
canceled by principal gerald witt, school district spokesman buddy price said
wednesday. some complained about the sexuality of the group, while others
complained about having a rock concert during school hours.

the group had agreed to play for a half-hour as part of a talent show arranged
by the school newspaper.

witt approved the concert after listening to one of the group's recordings.
the indigo girls released their debut album in 1989, and their latest album is
''shaming of the sun.''

i attended a journalism conference at columbia university last month. over the
course of the week you see a lot of the same people over and over again in
sessions, and you get to know each other. i met quite a few people from irmo
and even attended a workshop taught by a teacher from there. they couldn't
stop talking about the upcoming concert--apparently organized by the stinger,
the school paper. during a break in the action, a lot of students were hanging
out in the law building and listening to music. what was on the stereo?
hmmm...the indigo girls. owned by whom? some of the irmo kids. there was
obviously a group of people who wanted this to happen and paid no attention to
the girls' sexual orientation. unfortunately, the administrators of that
school and district have shown that bigotry is alive and well in america.
incidentally, sc still flies the confederate flag. i know it's not necessarily
a sign of racial superiority, but it might say a little bit about the mindset
of this place.

hey y'all,

cute amy moment to share from the voters for choice benefit in dallas - when
ig came out to sing with nanci griffith, amy chewed gum through 3 songs!!  i
know her choir leaders must have "learned her better than that!"

and in entertainment weekly this week, it says that the grateful dead holds
the record for most live concert performances at 2,300.  how close are the
girls to catching up, do you think?

well i could go on forever about this pda/ lesbian thing but all i have to say
is it grosses me out to see two frigging, coochy coo, straight people sucking
face in the halls at school just as much as it does to see my good friend kate
kiss her girlfriend goodbye.

jewel has one cd out "pieces of you" plus a couple songs on various
soundtracks (the craft and batman come to mind).  she has hundreds of
songs though...she has been writing since she was young.
but she's just not some people's cup of tea...they are entitled. :)
i just don't happen to agree.

after reading several posts on lesbian pda's i have to say that it's not
just indigo concerts where you see pda's.  i personally don't feel
comfortable with pda's whether it be gay, straight or whatever but i go to
a lot of concerts and i see more pda's at music concerts than i do anywhere
else in life.  last year at the lilith fair at the gorge i wondered if i
was at a freak show.  i'll probably get flamed for this but it seemed like
most of the people there were more into making a statement and socializing
than they were listening to music.  there was a woman next to me on the
grass telling her coming out story so loud that i honestly couldn't hear
paula cole sing.  i asked her to shut up but she wouldn't even acknowledge
me.  right infront of me was a woman wearing a thong bikini making out with
her dd girl friend.  she kept bending over and pulling the thong up her ass
so it would appear that she was wearing nothing at all.  these are just a
few of the aggrivations i endured that night.  i wouldn't even be going
back to the lilith fair this year if it wasn't for the ig.  i plan to be
the first to call ticketmaster so that i can get good seats.  i'd rather
not go than put up with the bs on the lawn.  i'm gay and i still can't
believe what i see sometimes.  being gay doesn't give people the right to
be offensive or shock people.

first of all how could you possibly be "anti-gay"??  how you can you deny

"southern mentality" isn't really in existence.  i think people like the ones
who cancelled the show at the school don't do it because they are "homophobic"
, but because they think that that's how it should be, because of course they
wouldn't wan't to offend anyone, and they have to be fair.  they should of
course be "fair" by allowing any and all artists to perform at the school,
from indigos to metallica.  that would be fair and right not, "protecting" the
kids from lesbian singers, and keeping a mentality that if we don't like it no
one does, and that trying to keep kids from being exposed to different life
styles will some how help? them.
just my humble opinion

don't ask us, ask them!

at any rate, the story didn't outright say that the supervisor-type was anti-gay,
just that
he was running for office, and that his spokesman announced the cancellation, not
the
principal.  the quote from the principal was the he hadn't decided yet.  i
interpret
that to mean that the politician was trying to get his name connected to the
cancellation,
and there's only one reason i can think of why he'd want to.  others might have
other
interpretations, and facts that we don't have yet might point to a completely
different
situation.

hello, all! =)
okay, i have to say that this has been a somewhat pitiful fund drive!  i
have only received checks for a total of $60 and there's only a week left
until the big day!  i hate to give her such a small sum as a birthday gift
from 1,000 or howewer many people!  please consider sending $5 or $10...
anything adds up.  her medical expenses are really up there... if you're not
sending anything because you think it's too late, you shouldn't worry!  you
have another week to get it in the mail.  i don't want to beg, but i think it
would mean a lot to her to know that there's a group of people out there who
care enough about her music to do this... also, how is it that we can raise so
much for a & e, but not michelle?!?!  all i'm saying is please contribute.  if
you want to send a note to her, do that, too.  just write a check and drop it
in the mailbox.  anything would be a great help.  thank you for your time...
sarah

<< hello!
okay, i live in atlanta and will see michelle.  i am willing to collect
anything you'd like to donate for her birthday.  i know that there's not much
time between now and may 9, but if anyone who's interested wants to send a
check as soon as tomorrow, i don't mind organising it and making sure she gets
it all... i think it sounds wonderful, because medical expenses are large... i
think she'd really appreciate the birthday gift.  it works on the ig list for
the grils' birthdays and it could work here.  so, i'll just go ahead and say
that if you want to individually send her something, send it to her p.o. box.
if you want to contribute to a large list donation, please send it to me at
the following address.  if you want to send a card, do it.  i'll make sure she
gets whatever you send, but i'm going to put all the money together and give
her one big check, so if you send a sealed card, make sure that the money's
separate!  just write the check to me and i'll add them all up and give it to
her.  i guess that's all.  if you all send $5, we could raise a small fortune
by next week! =)  if you all sent $10, well, that's even better.  even $1
would be great.  i think she'd love the thought.  please send a note to remind
me what the money's for.  thanks, sarah

hello!
okay, i live in atlanta and will see michelle.  i am willing to collect
anything you'd like to donate for her birthday.  i know that there's not much
time between now and may 9, but if anyone who's interested wants to send a
check as soon as tomorrow, i don't mind organising it and making sure she gets
it all... i think it sounds wonderful, because medical expenses are large... i
think she'd really appreciate the birthday gift.  it works on the ig list for
the grils' birthdays and it could work here.  so, i'll just go ahead and say
that if you want to individually send her something, send it to her p.o. box.
if you want to contribute to a large list donation, please send it to me at
the following address.  if you want to send a card, do it.  i'll make sure she
gets whatever you send, but i'm going to put all the money together and give
her one big check, so if you send a sealed card, make sure that the money's
separate!  just write the check to me and i'll add them all up and give it to
her.  i guess that's all.  if you all send $5, we could raise a small fortune
by next week! =)  if you all sent $10, well, that's even better.  even $1
would be great.  i think she'd love the thought.  please send a note to remind
me what the money's for.  thanks, sarah
