i went to see her again tonight (she plays every thursday at
utopia) and she does not disappoint.  she's got the most
amazing voice.  with subtle changes she goes from sounding
like melissa ethridge to sheryl crow to emily saliers.

she's just amazing!  that's all there is to it.  i went up
and talked to her for a few minutes after the set.  she's
recording an album this summer.  it will be available in
the fall.

sorry for nigc, i just wanted to share with you all.  she
does cover about 5 ig songs each set. :)  she even played
ctf twice tonight because some of her friends showed up late
and missed it the first time. :)  pretty cute!  oh well...

here's a couple of little ig blurbs from this week's atlanta creative
loafing:

=========================================================
decatur's tongue-in-cheek balladeer blake guthrie debuted
his hilarious new self-produced cassette 'i lost my woman
to an indigo girl' last week at eddie's attic. the crudely
packaged homemade effort (whose contents nevertheless put
to shame what's inside most slick professional cd boxes)
takes its title from a line in guthrie's song "she's not
playing for the home team," about a man whose girlfriend
deserts him for another woman. longtime attic regular
uncle mark reynolds was slack-jawed after guthrie's live
performance of the tune, gasping, "he walked right into
the chapel and preached against the chaplain!" after a
moment's contemplation reynolds added, "but, you know, i
bet amy ray would love that song. if somebody gave her a
copy, she'd probably do it as an encore sometime."
=========================================================

who on this list wouldn't give a lot to see and hear amy do that one?
;)

=========================================================
eddie owen of eddie's attic was interviewed by the tv
series hard copy for a recent segment about the parental
protests which resulted in cancellation of some dates on
the indigo girls' tour of american high schools.
=========================================================

did anyone on the list happen to see that episode of hard copy? i
remember that lisa d mentioned that hard copy had been to town... but i
don't recall seeing any mention of it since then. i just wondered how
the report about ig came across on tabloid tv... did anyone see it?

feel free to email privately if you saw it...

btw, if you're interested in what's going on in atlanta -- and many here
seem to be -- you can read creative loafing weekly online (published as
a freebie newspaper every wednesday) at:

does anyone know anything about this duo?   i know they are from
california, that higbie was on windham hill and played with darol anger

teresa trull was a producer for olivia, but has anyone got any other info
on them?   is their latest album worth a listen?

big huge quote freak*  anyways, i wrote them down and i'm gonna list
them...but i don't know why.  i could just say it's because i can, and
that would satisfy me - but i dunno if it would satisfy anyone else *heh*

anyway...

the one that i think is funniest is the bear cub one...the one that
strikes me is the "i did wrong" one...because of its simplicity.  it is
also coupled with (i'm assuming it was) amy completely under a blanket
rocking back and forth...it was poignant to me.

here's what you can respond to:  does anyone else love this video as much
as me (if you've seen it)?  do you love another video better and why?
joking is a close second...i love amy on lead, and emily actually looks
kinda butch in it and *drools* :)

and *i promise i'll stop babbling in a minute* on the "songs taking time
to grow on you* i felt that way with "touch me fall" - i could _not_ get
into it.  i didn't deny that it was a good song...just i couldn't sink my
teeth into it.  but they have the video for it on watershed and it gave me
new perspective - "touch me, i'm so beautiful..." it chills me now...weird
huh?

*shuts up* :)

i recognize the name teresa trull, because she did some of the music for
the movie "claire of the moon" (lesbian coming-out flick, not great art)
-- "desert hearts" beats it on every level for mature woman coming-out
films, *especially* it's great classic 50's desert hearts soundtrack --
it truly kicks-ass!

**speaking of which -- does anybody know where one can get out-of-print
cd soundtracks for small indie films like desert hearts? (circa 1985;
samuel goldwyn co, production)

any help would be appreciated... or if anyone has it and would be
willing to make a dub...?

thanks,

press release from the national gay and lesbian task force
(dated 15 may 98)
    from: <http://www.ngltf.org/press/amyray.html>

statement from amy ray of the indigo girls

the idea of a high school tour came about after emily
and i were judges in a student lyric writing contest
sponsored by scholastic magazine. the words we read begged
for and exalted in the chance to be expressed. the broad
range of topics included: political activism, love, sonnets,
sexual abuse and alienation. we were struck by the students'
energy and willingness to engage in and question life. the
intent of this tour was apolitical. after carefully reading
and approving our lyrical content 6 high schools agreed to
host a free show which included a question and answer
session. the expenses were to be covered by the indigo girls.
we have had 3 shows canceled, citing reasons such as
profanity and most importantly sexual preference. the
profanity issue is an obvious red herring -- the irony being
that we have more often been accused of being too spiritual
and "clean." a minority composed of homophobic narrow minded
parents and weak kneed principals and schools boards have
successfully enforced a policy of hate. our public schools
should be a safe environment for an open exchange of ideas
and a chance to explore one's own individuality.

the impossibility and hypocrisy of a situation where
kids are expected to be honest but are judged and alienated
from their community because of it should not escape us. in
response to these circumstances we are playing alternate
shows -- alcohol free, all ages, after school. thanks to the
kids who are standing by us.

barb "captain, there is a strange vessel delurking in front

twink "they're hailing us, sherlyn!"

sherlyn "on screen."

(suddenly, a tall, well tanned human with long flowing hair, and

twink "my god, can it be!?!?!"

barb "quite possible, doctor."

sherlyn "lieutenant john bond, is it really you?"

(well, i had to get in on this story somehow...) "yes captain, it's
me. i'm sorry that i've been out of contact for so long, but
it's been with good reason."

barb "what happened to you, lieutenant? the last thing we heard from
your ship was that you had come out as a bisexual, and then there
was no contact until now. where did you go? the last known location
for your ship was near the area known as the "lurking zone""

me "well, i was drawn into the zone because i heard there was some
work that needed to be done there, which only my ship was equipped to
handle."

sherlyn "you look like you've been in a few battles, lieutenant. who
attacked you?"

me "i was attacked by a ace of beings known as the dissertation, a
large and unrelenting, extremely hostile force. fortunately, i
managed to fight them off, and finish off the rest of the work. it
did take some time however, and i need to travel to another galacy
for a while, to rest and repair"

barb "lieutenant bond, before you dissapeared you were due to
transmit various tapes known as "trades" to key starships within
the netspace federation. when can we expect these to arrive."

me "as soon as possible, doctor barb. as soon as i can get hold of a
suitable piece of equipment, i'll transmit the tapes through the
system known as "the mail service". expect these within the next few
months."

sherlyn "lieutenant, how can we contact you?"

me "well, captain, due to the large workload, my communications
equipment has been partially damaged. however, you can still contact
me by writing to :

john bond,

or, you can use an e-mail system, which i will use when i can get to
a suitable computer. my e-mail address is :

john_bond@mailcity.com

i'll use that as often as i can, though not regularly."

barb "hailing frequencies closed captain. the ship has moved off at
warp 2."

twink "well sherlyn, this whole experience has left me pondering one
thing"

sherlyn "what's that, twink"

twink "how much i love that accent!"

---------------------------------------------------

well, that's it. sorry for the waste of the bw, but it was one of
the only ways i could think of to say farewell. although i haven't

i don't have their new album yet, and haven't heard it, but based on their
previous work together, it's *way* high on my "i want this" list. besides
being an accomplished producer/arranger, teresa trull is a dynamic
performer in her own right. her solo work is pretty much pop/rock with a
strong blues base. (think michelle malone with more of a polished pop
sensibility, sort of.) she's a little tiny redhead with one of the most
powerful voices i've ever heard. barbara higbie's solo work is
pop/folk/jazz sorta, mostly built around her gorgeous piano arrangements.
their previous album together, "unexpected," is one of my all-time
favorites -- and might well appeal to a number of ig's fans. (it's just
been released on cd, *finally*!, and it's also way way way high on my "i
need this now" list.)

expect polished arrangements, soulful lyrics, gorgeous vocals, and a lot
of heart. i'm just thrilled that these two have gotten back together for
another recording and i can't wait till i recover from paying the mechanic
(grrrrrr... but the car *does* have to have brakes, i guess...) so i can
buy it & see whether it lives up to my expectations. they're really good
in concert, too... then again, i'd probably follow teresa trull
anywhere.... when she's "on," her performances are up there with michelle
malone in terms of charisma and power vocals. darn cute, too. :-)

-anne, who'd have a lot more cd's if she'd won powerball this week

i actually asked eddie about it a few nights ago, and he said he didn't think
they aired it.  he said he actually didn't want to participate in the
interview that they did at the attic, but he thought it would be easier just
to let them in, rather than fighting them.   you're definitely right - they
were looking for dirt and couldn't find any.

play with gay jesus figure canceled

(ap) - the curtain won't be rising on a new terrence mcnally play
featuring a homosexual christlike figure. manhattan theater club said it
will not stage the award-winning playwright's "corpus christi" in this
fall, according to published reports. the recent announcement of plans to
produce the play sparked an outcry from religious groups. but manhattan
theater club said it was canceling the production because of security
concerns. neither mcnally nor the theater would comment further. mcnally,
who has won three tony awards for his plays "master class," "kiss of the
spider woman" and "love! valour! compassion!" was nominated this year for
his book of the musical "ragtime." "corpus christi" was read last month at
the off-broadway theater, where many of his plays have originated.

i have to highly recommend stone butch blues as well.  that book gave me a lot
of new insights.  however, you have to be prepared for a really depressing
book!  it's by leslie feinberg, she's also written, transgendered warriors,
which too is very informative and an important read.

i was thinking that maybe a song discussion is called for since i'm not
really sure if we are talking about much of anything, so in the interest
of that i was wondering if anybody had any thoughts on walk away?  i've
always thought that it was pretty straight forward, but the imagery that
it evokes makes it an interesting song for me.  i think that the words
used are very striking.  sooooo, anybody else out there have any
thoughts?? :)

jill -
trust me - living in a homophobic town sucks - even if you aren't gay! i
hate my hometown - never ever thought i'd be back here in a million years -
but - you know what - even though my town is the "most homophobic town in
america" (newsweek, 1994) there are 2 gay bars, several safe, progressive
places to be (*which* does matter, because as a minority - i would rather be
in a diverse room - people are way more accepting!) but it does suck at
times - there isn't too many bars i feel a strong need to hang out in (it's
been six years since i lived here though and most people i see from high
school i used to associate with are pretty cool - the bar scene has been the
bottom of my priorities actually...
but i live a stone's throw from bates college - so lewiston isn't so bad -
it is a matter of seeking the pockets and exploring them- and knowing when
to buy a bus ticket to go to boston so one does not lose their sanity!
aren't people supposed to hate where they grew up anyway?
(am and em, the *simple* goddesses they are, excluded...)
(let's *not* start the goddess thing again - i vrefer to most of my beloved
friends as goddesses. it's not like i sit arounnd and think about amy and
emily all the time..i'm much more concerned with fixing my soundcard,
figuring out where i put my new tori cd and finding a job - not in that
order...)
peace-

well since my mail server has been down for days and they are not into
there office until tuesday morning i have had a lot of time to think and
this song has got me thinking. it is one of my favorites of the girls. it
talks about old relationships and how your in love with someone who isn't
there. well i never saw the jest of it until recently when my cat passed
on. her presence is still here with me so i am no longer grieving. we have
gone to the show and she sleeps on my head at night. i know this is
strange, but that is how why i thought about the song and what meaning it
has. i never believed in ghost no matter what it was until now. call me
strange, but that is my indigo girl moment today. missy

huh?  wha--?  those nutty swedes.

for our enlightenment:
heliotrope:  n. 1. any of a group of herbs or shrubs of the borage
family, having clusters of small, fragrant, lilac to dark-blue flowers;
turnsole.  2. the common valerian.  3. any plant whose flowers turn to
follow the sun (formerly applied to the sunflower, marigold, etc.).  4.
a pinkish purple.  5. a bloodstone.  6. (surveying.)  an instrument for
reflecting the sun's rays to a distant point.
--- adj.  pinkish-purple.
(source:  the world book encyclopedia dictionary, c. 1964)

carol and i have this friend tim, who likes to utilize polysyllabic
locutions (he uses big words) and i do recall 'heliotrope' being one of
his favored ones.  heh.

good god, is that wysteria song creepy.

especially when you're driving down a deserted highway in the middle of
cow town at 1:30 am and you're the only one anywhere and you keep
glancing nervously at the empty seat next to you in the dark car and
simultaneously recalling all those unsolved mysteries where them
hitchhiker ghosts appear on the side of the road or, god forbid, right
in the car next to you, just like that, boom, and you're freaking.
you're freaking, you're an adult for chrissakes, you're a grown woman so
you feel silly about having all these highly irrational fears but hey
it's late so maybe it's permissible at this time of night and you've
always had highly irrational fears (et?!  come on already!  you were
six!  get over it!) so you try to think of other things, minor
distractions, yeah, those are good at a time like this, but all you've
got to distract/ comfort you is your boot of early recordings vol. 2 and
what comes on the speakers?  wysteria, for the love of pete wells, with
amy and em all moaning about "wysteeeeeria, are your lips still lily
white?..."
yike!

jill, trying to spark *something*, at barbara corrice's request ;) and
likely irking someone at a scottish college somewhere.  yep yep.

it's a little bit old but worthwhile - it was written before all the
stuff happened with the high school cancellations...

duo puts friendship in music: indigo girls are well-versed
by kelly woo, nandonext staff

imagine working with the same person -- your musical partner, someone
whose name will be forever connected to yours -- for almost 20 years.
emily saliers, one-half of the indigo girls, can imagine because she
has been working with her partner, amy ray, since their high school
days in decatur, ga.

but in a phone interview over the weekend from memphis, saliers said
she and ray are like sisters. "we're like family," she explained.
"we've had a working relationship for 18 years. i love her, and she's
a great person. we like to do different things, but we have a deep
bond."

it is that deep bond that has won over listeners and converted them
into fans. their unique, honest harmony features ray's gritty, raw
alto and saliers' sweet, angelic soprano. even their different styles
of songwriting -- ray tends to write edgier rock-folk tunes while
saliers is best known for her soaring ballads -- have meshed to
produce six full-length albums, the latest of which, "shaming of the
sun" (epic, 1997), made its debut in billboard's top 10.

with the popularity of last year's lilith fair tour, the indigo girls
have enjoyed the spotlight of commercial success. but while the
spotlight may be new, ray and saliers, friends since high school and
a team since their days at emory university, are not. after emerging
on the atlanta club scene, the two signed with epic records in 1988
and, a year later, released a self-titled album. they got a big break
when invited to open for fellow georgians r.e.m.

ray and saliers have been outspoken about their political and
environmental causes in their songs and on the record.

"i think no matter what we're doing, amy and i would be activists,"
saliers said. "we believe there's a lot of work to be done in the
world. we feel so passionately about injustice and environmental
issues ... a lot of times they end up in our songs as well.

"basically, it's just what we think about a lot. try to help educate
other people with information that we've gathered along the way. we
can't help but speak our minds ... amy and i keep doing what we do and
let the chips fall. we're not afraid to stand up for what we believe."

the group sponsored a songwriting contest for junior and senior high
schoolers last year and have planned a high school tour for the fall.

for young songwriters, saliers advised, "first of all, [don't] have a
goal of breaking into the industry. if you play music, it's important
to play it for the love of it. you should get together with your
friends and jam.

"you should play as much as possible   play for fun. keep on
playing all the time and knock on some doors."

even after so many years, saliers admitted she comes down with
writer's block.

"happens every time we get together to write songs and put out a
record," she said. "amy's writing up a storm. she's got a bunch of
great new songs. i just need to focus and sit down and gather my
thoughts."

those thoughts stem mostly from experiences on the road, saliers
said.

"we travel so much, and we meet so many people," she said. "things
that are going on in the world, and anytime you read a good book or
hear a good cd. there always seems to be stuff to think about.
writing songs is a way for amy and i to emote. i guess that's why we
keep doing it after all these years."

saliers cited joni mitchell as the greatest influence on her
songwriting career.

"i think she's a great musician, and her records are so different
from the ones before," saliers reflected. "i've looked to her as an
inspiration. she uses great, specific images, and she's very
lyrical."

the collaboration between the two partners continues to be the power
behind the words and voices. their relationship is unlikely to
dissolve. ray and saliers often stay apart while not touring.

"there's enough separation where it doesn't get to be a pain,"
saliers said. "we've worked together for so long. it's really kind of
a mystery.

"there are some things that i'd like to do on my own. but [i can't
imagine] my life not including indigo girls. we still enjoy it so
much, and i feel that we're still evolving and growing."

when asked which of ray's songs she enjoyed the most, saliers
replied, "right now, live, i like playing 'chicken man' [from 'rites
of passage,' epic, 1992]. but on the new record, i like 'scooter
boys.' it's hard to pick favorites."

her own favorite song? "probably 'ghost,' " she answered.

saliers said she and ray probably will tour -- both with lilith fair
again and on their own -- until september, write new songs in the
fall and begin work on a new record in january 1999.

i'm up in toronto here's where to go: staying with my parents for a couple

were staying with me, which meant they spent the week in my bedroom never
leaving, and i spent the weekend on the couch). in any case, i have several
questions, mostly for toronto area people:
1)lori asked if pop up video was showing the ctf video on the same dates as
vh1- did she get an answer? also, lamia, could you e-mail me the dates and
web address that i accidentally deleted?
2)denise (or anyone else in the area)do you want to play guitar again? i
can't access my e-mail address book.
3)danielle howle and the tantrums are going to be here for nxne - i think
i'm buying the three day pass just to seem them...anyone know of any other
good bands that are going to be playing that weekend?

thanks,

hey everybody!
okay yall i stopped the list for the long weekend so bear with me if
this has been mentioned before.

they popped an indigo video!!! they popped an indigo video!!!  they
popped an indigo video!!!

i only saw the last half of it though, i was watching baseball tonight
and decided to change channels and for some reason turned to vh1 and i
couldn't believe my ears, why it was a darn right familiar sounding
song!  once i got over the shock of actually seeing an ig video on tv,
i started reading bubbles.  um, one pointed out that the dude on the
whistle thing was the guy from hothouse flowers, and the next bubble
said that zamfir guy has sold more records worldwide than ig and
hothouse flowers combined (as frightening as that may sound).  there
was a bubble that said they'd never been together, mentioned jcs, uh,
pointed out russell carter in the pied piper scene thing at the end,
oh yeah, and "there are three anne surs listed in phonebooks
nationwide" (something like that).  anywya, if ya want to check it out
yourselves,  i stopped by the popupvidoe site and grabbed some
showtimes.  all times are eastern and pacific (and hawaii time but
that's only relevant for me).

5/26--4:30 pm        6/2--4:30 pm
5/28--9:00 pm        6/3--9:00 am
5/29--9:00 am        6/4--8:30 pm
6/1--1:00 am

remember, that's when they claim the show will be on.  the girls'
video is the fourth one.

lori ann (still tired after being waken up early in the morning on
saturday and monday by the 21 gun salute they had up at punchbowl)

hey kids.  i just got done bugging vh1 about the lack of exposure they
give to ig.  i know they've just included ctf on "pop-up videos," but it
would be nice to see at least one ig video during their normal
rotation.  i haven't ever seen a video of theirs on vh1, actually.
lame.  so i just wrote them a nice, friendly letter, telling them how
much i like their station, how much i love some of their programs (like
"behind the music") and that they should just play ig as much as they
play, for instance, sarah or jewel or shawn, dammit!

so here's their e-mail address:  request@vh1.com

go ahead and send 'em a nice, friendly ig request of your own.  heck, if
everyone does it, maybe we'll actually see the video for "shame on you"
sometime soon!

anyway, happy tuesday!

i just watched and taped ig - "closer to fine" on vh1's "pop-up video"
-- here's a blow-by-blow / pop-by-pop description (remarkably free of my
own personal editorial comment, btw). everything in brackets [] is my
description to explain the narrative.

teaser [voice over] [before video preceding ig's]: coming up... can
anyone really tell the indigo girls apart?"

opener:
   indigo girls
   "closer to fine"
   epic 1989
   director: tamra davis

pop up #1) this video was shot in and around the indigo girls' hometown
of atlanta, ga
2) amy and emily met in elementary school -- they first sang together in
choir
3) their first gig was as students at emory university under the billing
"saliers & ray"
4) [with arrows pointing to the correct one]
   emily saliers
   amy ray
5) amy searched the dictionary for a better band name -- "'indigo' just
stuck out"
6) indigo (n.): deep blue
7) they now complain they're always having to remind people who is who
8) amy ray [arrow]
   emily saliers [arrow]
9) amy and emily have never written a song together [factually incorrect
-mel] -- this one is emily's
10) she wrote it while isolated in a cabin in rural vermont
11) the song's message: every experience should bring us "closer to
fine"
12) it's 878 miles from atlanta to the closest fine -- fine, n.y.
13) the record company asked the director of this video to try to
"feminize" the girls
14) the director met the girls -- and didn't think feminizing them would
"work"
15) it worked for lassie -- the bitch was really a boy [picture of
lassie, the dog]
16) it worked for dustin hoffman [picture of tootsie]
17) emily described this verse as being a "poke at academia" [beginning
of dr of philosophy verse]
18) she's still bitter at losing a 7th grade election for student senate

involved
39) they did become involved in 1994
40) in a production of "jesus christ superstar"
41) mary magdalene [arrow pointing to emily]
42) jesus [arrow pointing to amy]
43) amy and emily asked friends and family to join them on a stroll
through atlanta
44) family [arrow pointing to amy's brother]
45) friend [arrow pointing to chris mcguire]
46) friend [arrow pointing to (?) blond male in black jacket]
47) friend [arrow pointing to caroline aiken]
48) their manager [arrow pointing to russell carter]
49) the phone directory lists 3 "anne surs" in the us
50) the fine for illegal public gathering in atlanta: $1000
51) the girls have said they like to challenge themselves musically to
get "closer to fine"
52) [picture of "stooge" larry fine follows emily out of camera frame]

close: the girls say their partnership remains closer to fine because
they never get too close. they work on solo projects and maintain
separate circles of friends. they do share one thing -- the fear that
the other one is going to want it to end.

the mention of how they chose "indigo" reminded me of a question that a
friend of mine asked the other day...he was curious if the fact that they
were called indigo girls and the fact that indigo is the one color of the
rainbow left out of the "gay rainbow" (is there a pc term for this?) are
at all related...

i had never noticed that before.  i know that they used to always say that
tehy chose the name just cuz it sounded neat, but those old interviews
were also before they were out, so if this were the catual reaosn they may
not have mentioned it.

or is he way off base?

any comments?

i read somewhere that indigo was in the first design of the gay rainbow,
but was removed so it could fit in a street for a parade.....
in that same article it also said what the color indigo stood for (as in

theres a bunch of stuff in the definition that could be used to describe
them.....
maybe it was subliminial.

i actualy wrote a paper on them my sophomore year in high school. i red in an
interview they's had that the name indigo girls came from a flip through the
dictionary. indigo is an earth tome, enviroentlay pc i guess you could call
it. it was something earthy and catchy. and actualy wasn't related to their
sexuality.

body joints?  i haven't had any kind of exposure to this sort of dancing
before( i'm thanking my lucky stars here) it isn't, heaven forbid, line
dancing is it?  please someone tell me, it isn't?

=====

where have all the flowers gone: the songs of pete seeger
various
appleseed recordings

march 3, 1940, new york city. the forrest theater, broadway and 49th:
a gob-smacked, 20-year-old pete seeger hears woody guthrie for the
first time. later at the post-concert party, alan lomax introduces
seeger to guthrie. "go back to that night when pete first met woody
guthrie, you can date the renaissance of american folk song," lomax
would later assert. and who am i to argue with alan lomax.

while huntington's chorea crippled guthrie, seeger, hounded by the
red-bashing, myopic, congressional house of un-american activities
committee, would carry the torch of political folk song through the
fifties and play a pivotal role in the urban folk revival that
emerged in the early sixties.

his songs have long since been integrated into the social fabric of
western culture. the likes of we shall overcome, where have all the
flowers gone and if i had a hammer can be heard on picket lines, in
soccer stadiums and in camp grounds from london to los angeles.
they've also had a profound influence on several generations of
musicians as distinguished as bob dylan and bruce springsteen.

while dylan's conspicuous by his absence on where have all the
flowers gone: the songs of pete seeger, springsteen's joined by a
remarkably diverse collection of performers the likes of bonnie
raitt, jackson browne, indigo girls, billy bragg, ani difranco,
eliza carthy, sweet honey in the rock, nanci griffith and
cordellia's dad.

two-and-a-half hours long and spread over two discs, this immense
undertaking by executive producer jim musselman of appleseed records
has drawn phenomenal performances from difranco (my name is lisa
kalvelage), cordellia's dad (how can i keep from singing) , john
gorka (the water is wide), indigo girls (letter to eve) and billy
bragg and eliza carthy (my father's mansions).

while these songs retain a certain natural freshness due to their
relative obscurity, the hits, however, have been murdered by every
fledgling folk singer in the known universe. have you ever met
anyone who couldn't hum a bar of i had a hammer? of course not.
familiarity may feed cynicism, but bruce springsteen (we shall
overcome), bruce cockburn, (turn, turn, turn) and tommy sands,
dolores kean and vedran smailovic (where have all the flowers gone)
carry the day on pure passion and impressive integrity. nanci
griffith and friends (if i had a hammer) make it on enthusiasm.
while bonnie raitt and jackson browne (kisses sweeter than wine)
rely on their formidable instincts that transforms a rather mundane
tune into a delightful slice of reggae.

f course, there are quibbles too. there always are. and minor as
they may be, judy collins (oh had i golden thread) and peter, paul
and mary (all mixed up) deserve a blast for their insipid,
time-worn contributions. and greg brown over plays his hand on
sailing down my golden river. but these are the only real hiccups
on a fitting tribute to one of the most important spokes on the
great revolving wheel we call folk music.

***********************************************************************
the pop life: indigo girl power is squelched

the pop life / by neil strauss

the most controversial music group in the country this month was not a
gangsta rap or shock rock band, but the indigo girls, the politically and
ecologically minded, grammy-winning female guitar duo. a spokeswoman for the
band's label, epic, said no one was more surprised than the indigo girls
themselves when three of five performances on a tour of high schools this
spring were canceled by school administrators.

officials at the high school in irmo, s.c., were so serious about the
cancellation that when students protested their decision, five of them were
suspended for eight days. it didn't stop the students from protesting,
however: they have filed a lawsuit seeking damages from the school
superintendent and principal. schools in germantown and knoxville, tenn., also
backed out of scheduled concerts by the band.

the reason, school administrators say, is the band's offensive lyrics and
complaints from parents. though amy ray of the indigo girls called the
principals of these schools and promised not to play any songs with profanity,
the administrators refused to back down. students as well as the epic label
say the concerts were canceled because the band members are openly gay, but
principals, among them edwin hedgepath of knoxville, maintain that there was
no way to make sure the band wouldn't use profanity in front of students. he
cited a previous indigo girls performance at a high school in which a song
with a curse word was used.

scouring albums by the indigo girls for dirty lyrics, however, is like
watching "barney" for signs of intelligence: they are few and far between.
that isn't to say, however, that the indigo girls don't have their crude
moments. here are four of their more subversive lyrics, so you can decide for
yourself if this is the sort of thing young people should be exposed to:

they advocate cutting classes -- "i remember the time when i came so close
with you/sent me skipping my class and running from school/and i bought you
that ring cause i was never cool" (from "least complicated").

they worship pagan religions -- "you had to bring up reincarnation over a
couple of beers the other night?/now i'm serving time for mistakes made by
another in another lifetime/how long till my soul gets it right?" (from
"galileo").

they employ unorthodox methods of teaching history -- "europe shed the blood
of indians/here i sit in the land of plenty/crying about my own virginity"

ohmygod is all i have to say to this bull about the indigo girls concerts
being cancelled. what's up with that?  oh, they're soooo controversial.
well, then, i guess the school will be booking marilyn manson next because
he's not as crude or anything with his lyrics now is he...oh yeah, and he
isn't openly gay (not that i'm implying that he is gay at all).  the
indigo girls are good role models for kids today and schools need to
realize that and stop getting off on denying students the right to see and
hear someone like them.

ok folks....

has anyone heard of/does anyone read julia penelope?

i'm reading a book of hers now, call me lesbian, that
my gf sent me and she has an awsome (in my opinion)
but semi-offensive-depending-on-your-viewpoint (like
my friend tracy was sorta offended because julia can
get pretty anti-bisexuality, which she ids as) essay
on wimmin and lesbian-only spaces.

anyways, she talks about michwomyn'smusicfest a
little,  which, as we all know ig will be at this year.

so anyways, it's a semi-short article.  if anyone's
intrested in it i'll (maybe/prolly) type it up.  if i
get enough responses i'll post it to the list.

oh my god! i had to laugh at this message. :) about the people dancing
like chickens in the soy video!  ha! shan and i have this joke running
about that very thing...we'll just break into that number
occasionally...out in public...inside...wherever.  we just let it all
hang out and the legs start flyin'.  heh heh...  it's a crowd pleaser,
let me tell you...the people standing around would sure be hurting if
those legs happened to break loose. :) it's hilarious -- the cowboy hats
make it even more great. ;)  how 'bout when they're swinging those
chicks between their legs?!  man...it's a frenzy of line dancing
madness, but i respect it cuz it's an indigo girls video. :)
speaking of line dancing...a while ago i turned on tnn and these fogies
were moving and shaking to "hammer and a nail."  my mom pointed that one
out. :) i heard her laughing downstairs and when i ventured down to
check out the commotion she was pointing at the t.v.  sho nuff, there
were those glorious voices -- didn't quite match the too small leather
skirts and chaps. :)  heh heh...the things we'll watch just to hear a
little i.g.
my tangent for today. :)
have a good one...i'm off to roast in the sun.

i think they are fairly obviously being sarcastic here. they are laughing

in montreal, you could only see the soy video on the country music
network.

so, dedicated as i am, i actually sat through 6 hours of cowboy hats and
boots to finally tape soy ! (not that i hate country but 6 hours
is waaaaay too much for me.)

that was last summer though and they only played it for about 2 weeks i
think.

i would personally *hope* they are joking, but you know, this whole thing has

yeah, me too :)  anyway, try translating it's alright.  apparently gay
doesn't translate too well.  i got this when i tried converting it to
spanish and back:
and it is well if you hate that way. you hate cause to me that i am
different and you hate cause to me i am glad. the truth of the matter
comes a day around, and is well.

the french route:
and it is well if you hate this way. you hate me cause which i am
different and you hate me cause i am merry. the truth of the matter
come around during a day, and it is well.

okay i'm off to go see how spanish swear words translate.

first of all, let these translations be a warning to never use them for
your french homework translations.  the babelfish is not very smart.  a
long time ago we were talking about our favorite moments in the girls'
songs, and i, belatedly, must add one that i just noticed this weekend.
on the 1200 curfews version of land of canaan, there's a part where amy
says "sweetheart" in this whispered, out of breath way that sends chills
down my spine.  oh, the beauty.  and here's something as beautiful (for me
anyway) i think i'm going to appel farm.  and i think i may get to work
the 2nd stage, which means i would get a backstage pass yet still get to
see the girls play.  this from someone who didn't think she was going to
see the indigo girls until at least january, probably later, due to a
semester in paris starting in august...needless to say, i'm excited.  and
i had the most wonderful indigo-filled memorial day weekend - i drove to
philadelphia for the philly folksong society spring thing, this camp
weekend thing, where at least 10 hours of my time was spent playing ig on
the guitar while 7 other girls who knew all the words sang along.  it was
great.  back to work,

i totally thought that there was a story behind their name from their early
years. wasn't it an agent or someone of theirs who had this nickname for them
and it turned into indigo girls which eventually stuck? i thought that i heard
or read that somewhere. i've never heard of  this rainbow idea. i'm just

hey all,

cool snowboarding background music...hmmm...?

movies that the ig's music is in, apart from the obvious "boys
on the side" and "philidelphia"...?

tis all,

anti-abortion group to protest gay fest at disney

            by brad liston
orland0, fla. (reuters) - operation rescue, an
anti-abortion, anti-gay group known for angry confrontation and
civil disobedience, will stage protests inside walt disney
world's magic kingdom during an annual gay celebration there in
june, the group's leader says.
more than 100,000 gay and lesbian tourists plan to visit
orlando the first weekend of june for a three-day celebration at
several of the area's theme parks, including disney world.
''we'll be there. we'll be inside the park and we'll make
ourselves known,'' rev. philip ''flip'' benham said in an
interview with reuters from his dallas, texas, home late
tuesday.
''if they think they're going to just drive by us at the
gate, they're wrong. they'll get the same thing inside the park
that they get when they show up at the abortion clinics.''
operation rescue is known for staging high-profile protests
-- benham calls them ''proclamations'' -- involving verbal
confrontation and the passive blocking of access to abortion
clinics.
the protests generally are not violent but are heated and
sometimes lead to large numbers of arrests. benham himself was
arrested outside disney world's gates last december for
obstructing a public street during a protest.
but his promise to take the protest into the magic kingdom
itself, where access is usually blocked only by long lines at
fantasy land or baby strollers outside cinderella's castle, is
unprecedented, local police said.
''i've been here 12 years and i've never heard of anything
like this,'' said jim solomons, a spokesman for the orange
county sheriff's office.
he said three emergency response teams will be available if
there is trouble.
gay days events are sponsored by several gay-rights groups
and gay-owned businesses, not by walt disney co.
but disney has drawn the ire of many conservative christians
for allowing its facilities to be used for the annual gay
celebration.
''sometimes this stuff really tries my patience,'' said roy
disney, vice chairman of the company founded by his uncle walt,
in a recent interview with reuters.
he was referring to the spate of boycotts leveled at disney,
most notably by southern baptists, after gay days last year.
''we're here for everyone. what do these people expect us to
do?''
in a word, said benham, ''repent.''
benham, a 50-year-old minister ordained in the free
methodist church, said disney has become a target because it
once epitomized family values, but now touts ''a world view that
says 'my right, my body, my choice.' but one day (disney
chairman) michael eisner will have to bend his knee before god.
it's god's right and god's choice.''
tom dye, publisher of watermark, a gay and lesbian newspaper
published in central florida, said gays will be there only for
fun and have no intention of taking the bait from operation
rescue.
''this is a fun event,'' said dye. ''it's growing every
year. if there are any problems, i'm sure disney will handle
them with its usual professionalism.''
disney spokesman bill warran commented on benham's plans:
''while we respect everyone's right to a point of view, we also
will work very hard to ensure guests visiting our resort will
have the best possible experience while on their vacation. our
policies would not allow that type of activity in our parks.''
gay days has been an annual event at disney world since
1991, when a group called digital queers -- a few hundred
orlando-area gays who communicated through computer bulletin
boards -- chose disney world as a place to meet face to face.
in the early years, gay celebrants wore red tee shirts so
they could recognize one another.

i know what carol said was intended to be a joke, and this is
not a flame of any kind, but:
can we please just not discuss abortions on this list?
i'd be willing to bet there are several forums on the web
for this topic exclusively, and if we want to discuss it, we
should be able to find them on our own.

i just wanted to put in this request before this abortion thing turned
into some out-of-control thread.  please, let's just don't mention the word
anymore.  out of respect for someone(s) who may not need to hear it
right now.  (no, it's not me, for those who are now consumed by curiousity.)

okay?

thank you,

hey now...

please excuse the mini rant which is to follow, but i just cant help myself.

why is it that we are *always* asking each other to not waste bandwidth with
this and that? the subject is always something different...life, a semirelated
artist, opinions, work, gossip...but there are always a few of us who complain
about it. why? there *is* infact a news only list. and, i have found that
almost everyone with nigc marks their mail as just that. i think all of you
are great, and i enjoy the little conversations that go on here. i think many
of us do. if you dont, please consider the news only list. i dont want to make
any enemies, i really dont...but flame if you must.

1) i wrote to vh1 to request shame on you

2) i actually did not like the pop up video for closer to fine because it took
away from the actual video.  for the first time, i was hoping that the video
would finally end.  it was a weird experience.  on the other hand, since
everyone else is being "popped", i'm glad the girls were popped, too.  it did
give a whole bunch of people who never would have been exposed to the igs
to check the girls out.

3) i'm reading more and more about the girls' involvement in honor the earth,
etc. and i have more and more respect for them every day.  they don't just
give lip service, they're out there really bringing a message that wouldn't be
heard if we didn't go to their shows.  i wouldn't just sign a card at a show
without knowing the background, so now i plan on learning more about exactly
what's happening out there and why the girls are supporting these various
causes.  that's what it's all about, right?

well i haven't heard the original, but i think the letters to eve cover is
*amazing*. it's like nothing i've ever heard the girls do before...the
heavy drum beat...and those vocal effects...it's so visceral. and to hear
amy and emily chant such words as salaam and hey wa over and over...it's my

biased. ;)

i'm looking at my little rainbow bracelet here and i can't tell whether
it's indigo or violet that's missing. i guess the name violet girls hasn't
got such a ring to it. lavender girls? i dunno...
lots of scope for sad tribute band names though eh?

i downloaded this from the net eons ago and now i cannot remember the
source, sorry. this answers your question.

---
the first rainbow flag was designed in 1978 by gilbert baker, a san
francisco artist, who created the flag in response to a local activist's
call for the need of a community symbol. (this was before the pink triangle
was popularly used as a symbol of pride.) using the five-striped "flag of
the race" as his inspiration, baker designed a flag with eight stripes:
pink, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. according to
baker, those colors represented, respectively: sexuality, life, healing,
sun, nature, art, harmony, and spirit. baker dyed and sewed the material for
the first flag himself - in the true spirit of betsy ross.

baker soon approached san francisco's paramount flag company about mass
producing and selling his "gay flag". unfortunately, baker had hand-dyed all
the colors, and since the color "hot pink" was not commercially available,
mass production of his eight-striped version became impossible. the flag was
thus reduced to seven stripes.

in november 1978, san francisco's gay community was stunned when the city's
first openly gay supervisor, harvey milk, was assassinated, wishing to
demonstrate the gay community's strength and solidarity in the aftermath of
this tragedy, the 1979 pride parade committee decided to use baker's flag.
the committee eliminated the indigo stripe so they could divide the colors
evenly along the parade route - three colors on one side of the street and
three on the other. soon the six colors were incorporated into a six-striped
version that became popularized and that, today, is recognized by the
international congress of flag makers.

originally there were 8 colors to the rainbow flag (i think pink was in there
too, but don't quote me), but there were printing problems, which brought it
down to the six colors we use today.

i'm not even gay but i *thought* there was a rainbow symbolism at stonewall
- the flag has been used way earlier than '79 - i know the pink triangle
w3as used earlier, at least i think it was - i did a bunch of research on
the various triangles (contrary to popular belief, most historians put the
black triangle to represent people with disabilities, not necessarily
lesbians, who were deemed political undesirables or something to that
effect)
my disabled, lesbian goddess of a professor told me this...
i may be completely wrong..

roy g. biv only applies to real rainbows.  most ppl
omit indigo when drawing/making rainbows because it's
so close to blue and purple, and smooshed between
them.  as for flags and gay pride.....

the idea of the rainbow for a symbol of gay pride was
thought up in the late 70's, by gilbert baker.
originally it was red, orange, yellow, green, blue,
purple, hot pink and turquoise.

baker made it for san fran pride, because all they
had was the pink triangle, and that's from the
nazi's.  he made the dyes (i just typed dykes--how's
that for a slip?) naturally and the cotten was all
natch too.

anyways, when the flag became mass produced, there
was no such flag cotten color as hot pink, and
turquoise was too expensive.

within two yrs of being created, the flag was so
popular the world's supply of purple flag cotten ran
out!  :)

the flag became recognized by the international flag
committee (or something like that) in 1986.

i learned all this from the web site below, an old
web site i can't seem to find the link to, and my out
in front daily calendar.

queer-story rocks, no?

one more quick gay flag story--christine (my gf)
lives in columbus ga and there's this guy who sells
flags in a little booth.  he has the rainbow flag and
the confederate flag right next to each other!  is
that supposed to be a joke, or does he not have a
clue what the rainbow is, or what?

amanda

ps for those of you keeping track, 22 days till
christine comes!!!

indigo girl speaks out after controversial concert bans
saliers meets with decatur high students
by laura brown

just two weeks after high schools in south carolina and tennessee canceled
free
concerts by the duo, indigo girls' emily saliers spoke to gay teens and their
straight supporters at atlanta's decatur high school.

saliers led a casual discussion may 19 with twenty members of spectra, an
after school organization for youth dealing with issues of sexuality.

the group, whose name stands for students promoting education, compassion,
trust, respect and acceptance, began this fall and may be the only gay-
straight
alliance in georgia's public school system.

"it's really important that we are having this discussion now, especially with
what
just happened to us in some other high schools," saliers told the students.

indigo girls were scheduled to perform a free show at irmo high school in
columbia, s.c., may 7, but the principal canceled the appearance after parents
complained that saliers and singing partner amy ray are lesbians.

the grammy-winning duo instead played at columbia's township auditorium and
gave away 2,000 of the 3,000 available tickets free to high school students.
several
students who were suspended for walking out of classes in protest of the
cancellation are fighting their punishment in court.

of the duo's five scheduled high school concerts, only two took place. indigo
girls
performed april 13 at loganville high school in loganville, ga., and may 4 at
franklin high school in franklin, tenn.

but farragut high school in knoxville, tenn., backed out of their show
scheduled
for may 6, as did germantown high school in memphis, tenn. germantown
principal edward chism said his decision to ax the may 5 concert came after
indigo girls used profanity in one song of their set in loganville.

"some parents found out that we were gay and complained to the principals, and
they canceled the shows, and it had sort of a domino effect. in the press
there was
a lot of talking about how people feel about gay people, and we tried to
engage in
some dialogue with the parents, but they wouldn't agree to that," saliers told
the
decatur high students, adding that she didn't believe the principals were
really
concerned about profanity.

"i don't know if you know the song, 'shame on you,' but it has the f-word in
it, and
at the first school we played, amy sang the word," she explained. "i don't
believe
that you should be allowed to use free profanity in school, i think that there
do have
to be boundaries and it is offensive to some people, and amy understood that
and
she called the principal after that show and apologized to him.

"what amy did then was call other principals and say that we will sign a piece
of
paper saying that we won't use profanity, but what happened was they used that
as
an excuse because they knew that sexuality was such a hot topic and there was
such a protest against it."

while the high school incident was more obvious, saliers said she believes she
and
ray have also experienced more subtle homophobia during their careers.
"amy and i have been really lucky to be successful, and we just sort of do our
thing
and half the time we forget we're gay," she said. "we can play chastain park
for
three nights and then turn around and play small clubs, so our sexuality
really hasn't held us back.

"but i think what has hurt us is the talk that goes on behind our backs, and i
think
there is homophobia in things like radio programming decisions ... i feel sure
that
there is prejudice against us in that, and there are also people in record
companies
who talk about our image or lack of it. we don't match the way women are
supposed to act or dress."

straight allies can have "a lot" of impact in helping gay people be treated
fairly,
saliers told the spectra members, many of whom identified as heterosexual.
"if you're gay, there's a certain amount of self hatred that goes on whether
you want
to admit it or not," she said. "i've been thinking about this a lot, because
when the
school [shows] got canceled, it really hurt our feelings. but most of the
students
who supported us weren't gay, and that impressed us a lot. ...

"having the heterosexual community come out and embrace people is good for
morale-it's having people say, 'you know what, sexuality is not an issue for
us,'"
saliers continued. "whether or not i admit it, i am affected by what society
thinks
to a certain extent, so to have heterosexual people embrace you as a human
being,
regardless of sexuality, is very affirming and empowering ...

"the support of straight people is invaluable because a lot of times,
unfortunately,
straight people are going to change other straight people's minds more than
gay
people."

as students shared their own stories about speaking out for acceptance,
especially
within their churches, saliers said her own father-a united methodist minister
and
theology professor-is supportive of her sexuality.

"i was raised christian and methodist, and my dad is a minister. he does
[accept
me]," she said. "my dad doesn't believe that homosexuality is a sin, and i go
to
church in a place where the minister doesn't believe it is a sin. the
methodist
church won't ordain homosexuals, but it's changing."

saliers said she came out after her sophomore year in college, "but growing up
i
always had really close friendships with other girls-nothing sexual at all,
but really
close friendships. back in high school, i never really had a language for
sexuality."
asked whether she experienced a "pivotal moment" that prompted her coming out,
"well, somebody kissed me," saliers laughed, "and i was like, 'ah, that's how
it's
supposed to be.' then i had to go through the whole process of thinking about
it
and asking how i feel about sexuality, how i feel about homosexuality, how i
relate
this to my spirituality, how my family will respond ... so it was a pivotal
moment,
and then there was a period of thinking about it."

she also encouraged the students, most of whom were white and female, to
consider the current controversy in the nearby kirkwood neighborhood and the
questions it raises about the interactions between sexuality, race and gender.
[see
story, page 7]

"a black minister called neighbors together to protest the white gays and
lesbians
taking over their neighborhood, and i wanted to talk about that, because
that's a
double issue," she said. "we need to think about how we separate those
issues-how neighbors can feel like they can lose their identities when other
people come in, and then it is a gay issue on top of that. and that is going
on in our
neighborhood."

despite the recent controversy in other schools, decatur high school principal
william j. funk said he had no reservations in allowing saliers' visit.

"she came as part of a special meeting they had, and from what i hear it was a
success ... it was a completely different situation from what i read about in
the
paper," he told southern voice.

asked whether he shared the other principals' concerns about indigo girls
using
profanity and being lesbians, "the latter did not concern me, and as for the
former, if
it had been an assembly program, it might have been different. this wasn't
part of
curriculum related activity, but we are concerned about language and setting a
good
example with students," funk said.

although other principals and parents have disagreed, funk said he believes
saliers
and ray are appropriate role models for students.

"i have been to indigo girls concerts, and amy ray is a contemporary of my
daughter at church. i have very special personal feelings for the indigo
girls, and i
judge them by their music and their social concerns," he said.

dhs student samantha ryan, a self-described "rampant lesbian," said saliers'
visit
was the perfect way for the organization she founded to end its first year.
"it was magical," she said. "this is my last meeting and i think this is just
the perfect send-off ... i love spectra with all my heart, it was my baby, and
i'll still be around, just in the shadows." a junior, ryan said she is leaving
dhs after this year in order to attend the county's open campus high school
and graduate early.

i heard somewhere that indigo was omitted from the gay pride rainbow because they
needed an even number of colours.  i think they were going to have a rally or
something and wanted to have people hold a big flag of each of the colours and
wanted half of them coming in on one side and half on the other or something like
that.
well, don't quote me, this is just what i remember hearing one time....

well it appears to be true....murder-suicide

thursday may 28 1:59 pm edt

comedian phil hartman found dead - police

los angeles (reuters) - canadian-born actor and comedian phil hartman, the
"saturday night live" star known for his impersonation of president
clinton, was found dead from gunshot wounds at his estate thursday, police
said.

his wife, bryn, was also found dead at the home in suburban los angeles and
police said it appeared she shot hartman, then killed herself as police
arrived.

two children were removed from the house, located in an upscale section of
encino, california, about 15 miles west of los angeles. the children's
identity were not immediately known, police said.

hartman, 49, was found in his bed.

police said they responded to a call about 6 a.m. local time (9 a.m. edt)
from people in the area who heard gunshots. police raced to the scene and
discovered the bodies.

after eight years as a star of "saturday night live," the ontario-born
hartman become part of the cast of the nbc sitcom "news radio," in 1995,
playing anchorman bill mcneal. the show, which had problems finding an
audience, was recently renewed by nbc.

hartman was famed for his impersonations of leading political and celebrity
figures, especially clinton. hartman also supplied the voices for several
recurring characters on the cartoon series "the simpsons."

his film credits include appearances in "pee-wee's big adventure" (1985),
"three amigos" (1986), "national lampoon's loaded weapon i" (1993),
"coneheads" (1993), "jingle all the way" (1996), "sgt. bilko" (1996) and

this is a spinoff from the rainbow flag tangent, but i suspect people
will be interested.

anyways, there is a great book by phyllis burke called

_family values: two moms and their son_

which discusses the history of queer culture in san francisco in
general, and a lot of stuff about gilbert in particular.

it's also just a great book and there is a tiny dab of igc in the fact
that the moms love ig.

blatant plug over now

i'm not sure if robin's question called for an answer to the list, but
since i do recall reading this on my oh-so-lovely gay and lesbian page a
day calendar, i think that i'll share :)

according to the april 24th 1998 page,

"in 1978, using organically grown and dyed cotton, gilbert baker designed
and made the first rainbow flag.  while originally the flag was made with
eight colors, hot pink and turquoise were eliminated becasue of the cost.
within the first two years of production, the flag became so popular
that it used up the world's supply of purple flag cotton."

so i guess it was just a cost factor...what a diss to indigo, and i'm
assuming that's the turquoise they're talking about here...i haven't seen
a good freedom flag lately so maybe i'm just confused. :)  of course this
is a bit different than that article that somebody else posted, but hey,
it's a calendar. i guess it can't be that explicit :)

phil hartman was a comedic genius... one of the greatest
comedic talents that ever lived....
he was hysterically funny and he made me laugh so much...
more upsetting than his death is....
his poor children, this traumatic event will profoundly
affect them for a lifetime...
those two children are gonna need counseling forever...

how could a mother do such a thing to her children?
obviously she was sick, but no reason can justify killing
phil while his children slept and then herself.... she must
have been a narcissist and a pig....

peace + love,
barbara

i'm not justifying murder but i think that statement is a bit harsh, it
appeared that she killed him and then herself, they don't have any proof
yet that it was her. also you don't know if he was a drinker or on
drugs, maybe he abused her. if you want to say that phil hartman was a
good comedian and that its' a great loss, then that's ok, but to say
that stuff about a recently deceased woman? i think that's really
uncalled for..

hi all!

i have a journalist buddy who just wrote a really interesting piece about gays
in christian churches.  he interviewed pastors from different denominations;
they talked about membership, marriages, bible verses, etc.

it is long, though.  worth it, but long.  if anyone out there is interested,
email me & i'll send it your way.  :)

peace,
lisa j.
who's really sad that phil is gone.  :(  r.i.p. mr. hartman!  thanks for the
laughs.

speaking of mister limes, how about this one?
in dgtgag, when amy sings "i'm not dignified anymore..."
at first, when i heard it, it sounded more like, "i'm not gettin' fat anymore"

hehe...not that i'm trying to revive that old thread or anything.
but i'll have to say it was a lot of fun!  wasn't someone compiling
all of our mister limes that we came up with?  whatever happened with
that?  i'd love to have a copy of that list... if anyone knows, please
e me privately.

thanks,

hey. good question. little five points is a community in atlanta that is
made up of five intersecting roads (hence the name!). the little five
points pub did indeed close, but for some reason, until about a month or
two ago there was a pub in (i think!) the same location with the same name.
now its some random pub that has been totally redecorated. do any other
atlantans know anything about this? does the picture the girls gave the pub
still hang in there? thanks.
