hi y'all,

i have seen a lot of those red sys mixes floating around the bay area.  i
really have no money right now, so i don't want to buy one only to find
out that no one wants it, but if you really want one, e-mail me, and i'll
go back to my fave record stores and see if they still have any.  all that
i ask is that you send me the $$ (probably around $20 plus shipping and
handling) as soon as i buy it, brcause i am really broke, and should not
be putting more $$ on my credit card w/o having money...

but e-mail me if you're interested and we'll try to set something up.
again, i can not be certain that the remixes will still be there
tomorrow...

:-) karen

hey folks-

well, with less than 48 hours to vote for emily's bday charity gift...
only 45 (out of about 700 listers have voted [15%]).

there is a major horse race btwn the 2nd and 3rd place top vote getters
-- separated by only *one* vote! this could be a *major* factor if we
later elect to divide the donations 50/50 btwn the top 2 charities.

so, if you have any opinions about this at all -- i urge you to vote.
you have til tuesday, june 30 at 8:00 pm edt.

the em's bday gift choices with their web pages:

ps: btw, after visiting the lilith97 web page -- photos confirmed that
the spanish singing female/male duo on the cnn showbiz report is indeed
lhasa (as marivel and others noted). her name is lhasa de sela. his name
is yves desrosiers.
an interesting note: for a mexican-american -- she has a french language
web page: <http://www.audiogram.com/artistes/lhasa/lhasa.htm> and
the "discographie" page has the lyrics from her 97 audiogram cd "lhasa"
-- in spanish, french, and english!
(... just anally correcting my error!)  ;)

subject:      lilith in la and a little more =)
mime-version: 1.0
content-type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"

hi y'all!
usually i just lurk a little, but i have had such an amazing indigo
week that i just had to put my two cents in... well, to start off my sis
came home from georgia (i'm in ca) and brought the promo version of sots
that she found in a store for $2 and thought i might like (it's white and
the same as the album except it's in a little cardboard cover), then she
gave me a copy of "history of us" on cd (very cool!), then she showed me
two other cd's that her roommate wanted to sell and gave me first dibs on.
i'm now the proud owner of days of wine and roses and complicated girls on
cd!
only $20 each, and her roommate paid $25 when rainy day still had that
stuff (or was even still there....whimper). then she suprised the whole
family by leting us know she wants to perform in the atlanta scene and she
even cut a tape (she sounds goood... if any of you atlanta folk encounter a
group called "steel redemptions"...please cherr loud for me...thanx!  all
right.....lilith rocked!!!
the la show was fabulous!!!!! amy and emily brought the crowd to their feet
and had us all dancing. i had a pretty good seat but not perfect, close
enough to see everything for the most part. anyway, i got the ep (blue)
with blister in the sun (done at rimac!!! i was there!!!...i digress..).
k's choice  doing rockin' the free world was awesome...sinead o'connor
doing chickenman was cool....i alomost died when john popper (from blues
traveler) walked onstage!!!! i won't even tell you what i almost did when
ellen sauntered out! i just know i was weak in the knees by the end of the
performance . every time i see them they seem to get better.....as for the
finale, someone said amy didn't come out for it. i swear i saw her up
there. she had a guitar and wasn't on jumbo-vision (em was, it was cute! =)
that was rad too. i must also put in my admiration for all the performers.
i was soo impressed with natalie merchant. her performance was really fun
('though it's a bummer that she got hit in the mouth when a fan threw a
bouquet of sunflowers...she talked about her fat lip for the rest of the
show. she seems cool.) sarah was amazing as ever. i'd never heard erykah
badu before and i was impressed, sinead did an outstanding show, all the
2nd stage acts rocked (i have a soft spot in my heart for k's choice....).
i've spent all day on an indigo high. i watched watershed and i have been
switching indigo cds in the stereo allllll day! this might last longer than
the average concert high. what i wanted to say most was ......... if you
have tickets for lilith at all this summer....have an amazing time!! it was
so much fun! oh, and the ep is worth it....the tom morello remix is
cool.....the ig really know how to share a stage with grace and they never
cease to suprise me at concerts (i've seen 'em 8 times now....and
counting). they're the best!!!!

luvya!
sherri

if you have not caught up with all those home improvement projects
that you started or slated to start, this spring then this week would be
the ideal time to try your hand at getting them finished as you will
find you have more help this week than ever so take full advantage of
those who want to assist you in this. a teenager will need more
attention this week than you have given him or her in the past so a bad
mistake can be circumvented. your dreams are very lucid and memorable
this week and you will find much spiritual strength in them when you
spend time in meditation.

yeah!  i was there too...i was down by christopher and...um...some other
street *grins* towards the end.  they applauded for the mayor down at our
end...so hearing that there were demonstrators and such confuses me, since
i have only heard good things...but anyways...the police did get a huge
ovation.  and (if you have ever seen the hbo special "why am i gay?"
you'll know what i mean) it was the biggest treat to see the cop that was
featured in the documentary...we tried to find him later, but you know how
impossible that is...but it was just very cool to have seen him at all :)

that was my first pride, certainly not my last, and it was soooooo
wonderful :)

lets begin...

yesterday i woke up, to a horrible day...first, i gfound out that a check
my mom wrote me was returned (someone screwed her over), and because of
that al teast five of my checks have bounced (bof a charges $20 per
check)..then my sister and i had a long talk, it being my fathers birthday
( havent spoken to him in three months, seen him in 6- his choice), and
came to the realization that he does not love us, and never really
did...so i spent a frw hours having a nervous breakdown, then listened to
ig and realized emily is so right- the hardest to learn is the least
complicated...

but two good things did come out of this- i found a new use for my old
tapes and cds so i wont be having the sale *very sorry*, and while i was
listeing to the radio, star had a two hour lilith fair special, with mucho
ig content..so i recorded it, and will soon be offering it to the
list...its very very good...

anyway, just another reason why emily and amy keep me on this
planet...kind of like my little lifeline..along with a few others...

well, if you read my post about the lilith fairs, then you know i need $

so they (and i) are trying to sell their tix...there are 2 of 'em
together sitting within the first 20 rows i believe...they were very good
seats cuz we were lucky in reaching the operator pretty quickly...this is
for the harborlights 7/11 indigo girls + opening guest (i don't know who
they are) show...if interested, please email me at

hey y'all!

just wanted to thank all the listees i met at both of these
lilith fairs!...thanks caroline - you're da bomb!...thanks sheri for
selling me your tix!...thanks to everyone for being so friendly...i got
to meet a&e at the sf meet & greet (thanks again caroline!) and i took
some pix...to those i already met in person, if you gave me your email
addy or if you have my card, you'll definitely get copies!...if you're
reading this and you're interested in copies, just email me...the roll's
done now, but not developed yet so i can't vouch for the clarity of 'em
yet <smile>...i thought that the sf lilith fair was a much better venue
than the los angeles one in terms of acoustics...the sound person at the
la one was not doing a good job with reducing and eliminating
feedback...i haven't had the chance yet to catch up on my ig email but
i'm assuming that the set lists have already been posted for each of
these shows...there was no shame on you at either...the la one was very
very cool because it included john popper of blues traveller playing
harmonica on parts of chickenman and a couple of other songs...also, the
special guest of ig that night during closer to fine was....ellen
degeneres!...she sang and looked great!...la lilith fair had power of
two, which was good to hear [all the couples there gay and straight were
all lovey dovey, i of course just smiled and danced since i had no honey
there <sigh>]...non ig stuff: erykah badu was spectacular as usual, she
sang tyrone at la lilith fair, which i was hoping to hear...natalie
merchant is superb live, i had never really gotten into her before, but
dadgum, she's so cute and lively! [someone threw some sunflowers at her
on stage in la and they hit her in her teeth, but she was all cool about
it and mentioned it a few times, but kept on singing!]...and of course
the sexy sarah was as enthusiastic as ever...does the woman ever have a
bad hair / dress day? <smile>...all in all, i'm thankful that i went,
though the entire trip has put my butt in da financial hole...but it was
worth it and i did try to stick to a budget <smile>....thanks for reading
and take care, @=d jen

umm, i don't know a good way to ask this so i'm just gonna:  which is
the best address to which to write to amy or emily?  i hope i'm not
being an annoyance, it's just one of those things.  i know they like to
hear about worthy causes with which to get involved and i've got a
couple of 'em.

my face is actually red for even asking this question, so please no
flames and be kind!  i have an address for their "fan club" and i have
daemon's address, but i'd feel weird writing to either one.  i do want
them to get this and read it and i have no idea if i write to one of the
above if my letter is just going to be tossed away.  i guess it'll just
be the luck of the draw, huh?

anyway, thanks for indulging me.  i know, i'm a freak.  so sue me.

hey folks,

actually, it's probably the fan club address which is listed
in the albums' liner notes... there's really no guarantee
that amy or emily is likely to see your letter, no matter
where you send it to, but the fan club address is probably
the safest bet.

also, i'd like to urge anybody who hasn't voted regarding
emily's birthday project yet to do so.  thanks (and thanks
mel for volunteering to collect the votes).

and, please don't send virus warnings to the list...

thanks folks -

reuters
29-jun-98
by troy j. augusto
lilith fair (rose bowl; 40,000 capacity $39.50 top) pasadena, calif.
(variety) - mother nature couldn't have been kinder to the
near-sellout crowd gathered at the rose bowl saturday for the l.a.
date of this year's second lilith fair tour, the festival where
females rule the day.

<snip>

the rocking hourlong set by indigo girls, while the sun went down, was
the all-star spot in the program. guests included actress ellen
degeneres and blues traveler's john popper, who blew some mean harp;
and second-stage musicians tara mclean and billie myers joined the
band.

but it was emily salier's sharp guitar play, including a nifty
acoustic slide portion, that stole the set.

<snip>

....
there was more to the article than this, but i thought i'd just share
the igc part.

:)

hey kind friends-

first of all, i thank the 67 listers, *so far*, (out of about 700) who
have taken the trouble to vote -- there is still *1 more* day to vote
for your preferred choice for emily's bday charity gift. i hope that
many more listers vote on this -- only 10% of you have so far...  :-(

i'm posting the instructions to vote for the second part of this vote
now -- even tho the basic results won't be posted til tomorrow --
because i know that many people have already made up their minds about
whether or not to divide the gift donations 50/50 btwn the top 2 vote
getters (from notes they've included with their votes). plus, i know
that the longer people have to vote -- the more will vote.

i've posted the instructions several times for part 1 (despite
bandwidth), because each time has produced a new small flurry of votes
-- so if that's what it takes to get folks to participate... okay!  :o)

there is still a serious horse race btwn the 2nd and 3rd top
vote-getters -- the one that was in third has pulled ahead and is now in
2nd place by *2* votes! so, *every single* vote for choices 1 -> 6 is
extremely important if we now elect to divide the donations...

i'll post the results of the part 1 vote after:
     tuesday, june 30 - 8 pm edt.

so, next...

**em's bday vote - part 2** -- whether to divide em's b-day gift
donations 50/50 between the top 2 vote-getters...

vote either:

yes - to divide the donations equally between the top two
choices (from the six choices) of "voting for em's
          bday gift"

no - to contribute all donations to the winning choice

reply to me with the subject header:

     re: em's bday vote 2-(divide?)

[please include the exact wording "em's bday vote 2-(divide?)"]

i'll count up the part 2 votes on wednesday, july 1 at 8:00 pm edt and
post the results then.

then... erin <gitroop> and jill <jillyc@hotmail.com> take over to
collect and present our bday list gift donation/announcement to emily
(or her representatives). they will post all of the necessary info about
how to donate (addresses, "to" on your checks, etc).

peace,

ps: more error correction... umm... yeah... 45 out of 700 is 6.4%, not

make me a copy of the song. i can send a 60 min. tape. you can put other
songs of the girls on it. i do not have the tape yet to do the copies for
the boot tree as soon as i get it or friday into next week since i have the
whole week off from work to get all the tapes done, more of my web page and
programming the rest of via gold voice. if you are still on windows 97 like
i will be for another year or so since i just got used to it you should get
it. it is expensive and time consuming, but it will be worth it in the end.

uhh, ha.  yeah.  lemme elaborate:
i called rcam this morning at around 10, and asked to speak with mr.
carter.  he was out of the office.  so i had a nice little chat with
this kinda dimwitted secretary guy.  i explained that i was on an indigo
girls listserv, and that we are sending a donation to a charitable
organization in honor of emily's birthday.  i said i needed to speak
with mr. carter in regards to organizing and obtaining permission to
meet with ms. saliers at an upcoming concert to present her with the
check.
the guy was like, "you're on a what?  a listserv?  aaaaand *which*
listserv is this?" like he thought i was some stalker up to no good.  i
told him it was indigo-girls@netspace.org, that it's not through epic,
it's just a bunch of fans who comprise this list, which is akin to a
discussion group.  he was not impressed.  he acted like i was a bit off
my rocker.  he was getting a tad patronizing.
i let down my formality and was like, look, i'm just a student, i go to
oberlin college, my name is blankety-blank, my home phone number is
blankety-blank, you can do whatever, uhm, background checks you need to
do, i'm pretty harmless, whatever.
"aaaand you want to...meet with...?"  he asked again.
"with emily," i said.  "our list has done this for a few years now, for
both amy and emily's birthdays, and it's gone off without a hitch thus
far," i told him.
"mmm hmm," came the bemused reply.
well, he took down the message, and all my vital stats save my eyeglass
prescription, and said he'd have russell call me back.  as of now (9pm
eastern std. time), i have heard nothing from mr. carter.

i'm wondering if you who have done the birthday project in the past have
come up against this obstacle, or any opposition from the management,
and if so, how you got around it/quelled their fears/gave them a clue.
please tell us.

also, if it were that one was going to a show just to meet with the act,
would is hypothetically be possible for one to get in for free and just
meander backstage and wait for said act to finish their set and come to
said meeting?  hmmm.

email me,
jill

august 1998 -- vibe

lilith fair fantasy mudwrestling

this summer, folk rocker sarah mclachlan has pulled together more than 60 of
the world's top female pop acts for the second annual lilith fair - 57
concert dates of the biggest rotating lineup, traveling festival tour ever
assembled.  with a number of women-oriented charities dispensing literature,
the message will be there.  and of course, the music'll be great.  but the
real excitement will come during the nightly after-parties that have been
arranged at local bars and gymnasiums in each city stop.  there, amid the
curses and catcalls of sweaty beer drinkers, the tour's headliners are set
to engage in a hallowed feminist ritual: mudwrestling.

matchup:  indigo girls (amy ray and emily saliers) vs. missy "misdemeanor"
elliott
indigos' strengths:  they've been to the doctor.  they've been to the
mountain.  tag-team strategy preserves energy and keeps opponents off guard.
indigos' weaknesses:  slathered in lubricant, grappling female hardbodies,
amy and em tend to lose focus.
missy's strengths:  comes off the top rope like jimmy "superfly" snuka.
missy's weaknesses:  can't stand the rain.  doesn't like mud so much either.
predicted victor:  missy
hits 'em wit' da ha.  hits 'em wit da hee.  slams an elbow into ray's
larynx.  drives her knee into saliers' chin.

matchup:  lauryn hill vs. erykah badu
lauryn's strengths: lightening-quick jab.  indefensible right cross.  can
rap and sing.
lauryn's weaknesses: adversaries can strum her pain with their fingers.
badu's strenths: trademark "badu back-breaker" devastating to opponents
spinal column.  hides brass knuckles in headwrap.
badu's weaknesses: kinda mellow for the mudwrestler....
predicted victor: lauryn
the fugee fighting machine will kill badu...softly, but, nevertheless,
decisively.

matchup: sheryl crow vs. sinead o'connor
crow's strengths:  through a rigorous pretour weight-training regimen (and,
reportedly, heavy steroid usage), crow had bulked up to 265 pounds of
battle-ready muscle.
crow's weaknesses:  according to song "if it makes you happy," crow "still
gets high." wrestling is serious business.  the mud pit is no place for
impaired sense perception.
sinead's strengths:  piercing banshee wail can shatter opponents' eardrums.
master of the figure-four leglock.
sinead's weaknesses:  cried in "nothing compares 2 u" video - a sure sign of
weakness.
predicted victor: crow
god, still upset over the pope thing on saturday night live, will not let
sinead win anything.

matchup: queen latifah vs. sarah mclachlan
latifah's strengths: packs heat.
latifah's weaknesses: covered in mud, the queen will lose some of her
intimidating regal air.
mclachlan's strengths: held the iafmw (international association of female
mudwrestling) belt from 1994 to 1997.  will scratch, pull hair, and cheat to
win.
mclachlan's weaknesses: skin is not bulletproof.  will be wearing only a bikini.
predicted victor: latifah
bla-ow! bla-ow! bla-ow! who you calling a bitch?!!

um, guys, do y'all see what this means?  upon tallying our results, we
(the list) will have exactly 21 days to collect everyone's money, cash
it in at the bank for one big check, and give it to em.

how do y'all feel about a belated birthday donation?

just throwing out suggestions,

<br>      by troy j. augusto

<br>      mother nature couldn't have  been kinder to the near-sellout crowd gathered at the rose bowl

saturday for the l.a. date of this year's second lilith fair  tour, the festival where females rule the day.

<br>      a bright sun and light breeze dominated afternoon sets from  such standouts as sinead o'connor and erykah badu, while cool  evening winds and a setting, orange-hued quarter moon nicely  framed enjoyable turns from sarah mclachlan -- the multiplatinum

canadian singer who helped spearhead lilith -- and natalie

merchant, who turned in the surprise set of the day.

<br>      a gigantic stage in the middle of the bowl's playing field

(it took 20 hours to assemble and 101/2 to break down) was  decorated with artwork depicting the angel-filled existence of

lilith, the mythical character who left the garden of eden to  walk the earth looking for adventure.

<br>      she would have found plenty at the rose bowl. o'connor, once  again sporting a shaved head, was her fiery and provocative old

irish self, quoting cypress hill lyrics and giggling between her  powerful songs of devotion and strength.

<br>      badu, sporting her trademark white head wrap, drew some of  the event's loudest reaction, as she punctuated her brash set of  cool r&b with conversation about her newborn boy and other  empowering anecdotes. "three-hundred-sixty degrees of life,  that's what i represent," she told the enchanted throng.

<br>      mclachlan expanded little on her exquisite show in december  at universal amphitheater, except to demonstrate her increasing  ability to touch the souls of individuals in large settings.

while she might not be able to hear all of the shouts of "i love you, sarah" that greet her uplifting songs, she clearly  made the audience feel as is she was singing directly to them.

<br>      merchant -- the former 10,000 maniacs singer who could be  seen before her set under a white sun umbrella talking to fans

-- was accidentally hit in the mouth by a large bunch of  sunflowers thrown by a fan early in her set.

<br>      "that hurt like hell," she said, "but they are  beautiful." the incident seemed to energize the usually passive  stage performer, whose 50-minute set featured music from her new

"ophelia" album.

<br>      the rocking hourlong set by indigo girls, while the sun went  down, was the all-star spot in the program. guests included  actress ellen degeneres and blues traveler's john popper, who  blew some mean harp; and second-stage musicians tara mclean and

billie myers joined the band.

<br>      but it was emily salier's sharp guitar play, including a  nifty acoustic slide portion, that stole the set.

<br>      guys were in short supply in the audience; fights, thrown  bottles, mosh pits and bad vibes were altogether absent.

instead, a good-natured, celebratory mood that encouraged people  to express themselves was the order of the day, meaning this  tour succeeds on levels beyond financial and musical.

<br>      also in contrast to many all-day affairs, very few people  left before the headliner performed. and though mclachlan's  tender ballads might have seemed a bit anticlimactic, it's safe  to say few in the stadium felt shortchanged in any way.

<br>     <br>      presented by universal concerts. performers: sarah

mclachlan, natalie merchant, erykah badu, indigo girls, shawn

colvin, k's choice, billie myers, lhasa, tara mclean, anna

gasteyer, tia texada. reviewed june 28, 1998.

someone mentioned about making the donation be belated to give ourselves
more time to collect, setup a "meet" & deliver the $$$.

maybe this sounds a bit too simple, but shouldnt the charities listed on
the ig site have fairly decent contacts with ig?

how about reverse engineering this & have people send their donations
directly to the charity.  on each check/money order note emily saliers
birthday - ig listserv (or something to that affect).  contact the
charity in advance and see if we can get one person's name at the
charity to coordinate.

if it's possible, setup some type of personal presentation to emily.  if
not, perhaps the charity can arrange for a response from emily (or the
exec director of the charity) to our list.

my .02,

melissa

hey folks,

i'm all over the place today but i'll throw my hat in on
this one:

melissa said:

i think this would be a good idea.  better to have a more
organised gift, even if it is a little late, rather than
being disorganised and early...

i think it's better to have one large donation in
everybody's name rather than lots of little ones.  it
is a bit of a logistical thing though...

argh, gotta run.  more later i'm sure -

i've got a question -- i'm roughing it with a 1200 baud modem and i did
not have the patience to page through all that fucking html that someone
posted so --- were there any more messages in the digest below that or
was that it?

anyway, for those in the la area - the current issue of lesbiannews has a
2 page interview with amy.  indigo girls are the cover  photo too, but
it's just a film-strip like thing with two old pictures - the one on the
tower postcards and the one where amy is bare foot and emily is wearing
the rage shirt.  it's a long interview, she mentions some touring plans
at the end which i'll really look up and type in later but briefly in
addition to michfest and newport, she mentioned 3 or 4 benefits, one in
florida, one for the zapatistas, one for a gay andlesbian taskforce and
... okay maybe 3 or i forgot one.  also she described rolling thunder as
"an east coast club tour" as if living in california wasn't being
annoying enough today.

also, at the end of the article it says "for more amy ray, visit
wwww.lesbiannews.com" which i haven't tried yet, because of my
web-deprived machine.

and lastly - did everyone else but me already know that the lilith site is
posting lots of pictures of e & a - you have to go to the dates page,
click on a show (one that has already happened, preferably) which gets you
the line-up, then click on the artist and you get a page with picture
thumbnails and maybe some multimedia.  lots of pictures especially from
the autograph signing at the san francisco show.

okay, that's it

</p><p>    halfway into the indigo girls' set, a young man, sunburned and tipsy,

staggered to his seat at the shoreline amphitheatre. grabbing his

friend's arm, he leaned forward. ''there are women,'' he announced,

''in the men's room.'' his equally tipsy friend's expression

registered a mixture of alarm and delight: girls in the boys' room?

</p><p> of course: it's the lilith fair. last year, sarah mclachlan's

earthy, woman-friendly festival spoon-fed humble pie to those who

insisted that an all-female lineup would never fly commercially. but

fly it did, generating more interest -- cultural, musical, political,

financial -- than almost any other package tour in 1997.

but lilith has also drawn fire, much of it from women, for

privileging acoustic singer-songwriters over rappers and raucous

grrrl bands. is this a showcase celebrating female musicians of all

genres, critics asked, or a feminist folk festival?

</p><p> lilith fair '98 manages to evade the issue. the lineup has

stretched its boundaries but only by a fraction: new additions liz

phair and missy elliott doubtlessly will offer a blast of unruly

energy, but neither artist was on the bill tuesday, the first of the

festival's two days at shoreline.

</p><p> as a result, the smaller side stages offered the widest selection

of musical styles. local lilith fair contest winner the beth lisick ordeal

served up a jazzy, eclectic spoken-

word repertoire. the french band autour de lucie performed smooth,

lounge-tinged pop, and the rambunctious billie myers added a touch of

psychedelic heavy metal.

</p><p> the capacity crowd that wandered toward the main stage through a

maze of booths -- representing everything from planned parenthood to

biore cosmetics -- was a predominantly white potpourri of lesbians,

straight women and their overtly sensitive boyfriends, slumming

feminist yuppies, and young girls in gypsy skirts clutching copies of

glamour.

</p><p> me'shell ndegeocello kicked off the main-stage lineup with a set

of acoustic blues that was liberally laced with hip-hop energy, deliv

ered in her rich, velvety alto.

</p><p> next came current r&b queen erykah badu, looking every inch a diva

in her trademark head wrap and

colorful, african-inspired robe. alternating songs with ruminations

on fertility, badu performed 30 minutes of snaky, captivating music

from her breakthrough album, ''baduizm.'' her stage presence might be

pure affectation, but her talent is not: from the funky rap of

''rimshot'' to the seductive growl of ''appletree,'' badu shimmered

with a distinctive vocal signature.

<h3>folk veterans        </h3>

</p><p> but it was veteran folkies the indigo girls who stole the show

before it was half over. the duo -- amy ray and emily saliers -- were

greeted with waves of applause that continued (punctuated with random

whooping) throughout a 40-minute set. as they swapped vocals and

instrumental leads, ray and saliers balanced their political content

with luxuriant harmonizing and an array of hooks sharp enough to

punch holes in a hundred pop bal

loons.

</p><p> mclachlan and, to the audience's delight, joan baez (who lives in

the bay area) came on to sing backup during several songs, and both

returned -- accompanied by second-stage band k's choice -- for an

anthemic rendition of neil young's ''rocking in the free world.''

</p><p> if the indigo girls were the evening's highlight, natalie merchant

was its most welcome surprise. the indie chanteuse has loosened up --

a lot -- since her stiff, icy performance friday at the festival's

opening in portland.

</p><p> at shoreline, merchant was in fine voice and exuded an ebullient

charm, whether chatting with (and occasionally running into) the

audience or dancing like a dervish across the stage, singing the

radio hit ''kind and generous'' from her latest album, ''ophelia.''

</p><p> unfortunately, headliner mclachlan ended the night on a

flatter note, with a set so predictable that she even repeated,

verbatim, her portland stage patter. but fans more interested in her

music greeted each perfectly reproduced tune with enthusiastic

applause.

<h3>mclachlan's versatile voice  </h3>

</p><p> mclachlan's lack of spontaneity was counterbalanced by the elastic

resonance of her singing, whether she was seated at the piano

crooning ''angel'' (from her latest album,

''slanted'') or standing at the microphone roaring through the

acerbic ''building a mystery.''

</p><p> showcasing voices, specifically women's voices, is what the lilith

fair is all about, and for that it deserves applause. still, in a

world where women have been silent so long -- and where they're still

fighting to be heard, much less listened to -- it would behoove

mclachlan and other lilith organizers to diversify the chorus.

hey!

i know this is totally nigc, but can people please stop posting stuff that
contains html tags?!  for those of us on unix and vax systems, our e-mail
does not support it, and it just comes out as a bunch of html commands.

sherlyn, is there any way that you can put something about that in the
faq? :-)

okay, that's all i have to say now.  nite!

:-) karen

ps- the red remix offer is closed (i am still getting e-mail about
that...).  i'll keep looking for more copies, but for now, it is closed.

yep... please, folks, sent to the list in plain text format
only.  i know html formatting comes out all nice and fancy
schmancy in a lot of mail readers but for people like me
who use unix, it's really not all that friendly.  i couldn't
see the article at all.  also, it came out really messy in
the digest.

thanks -

i don't know much but i know this .....

indigo girls are overwhelmed with requests
for their time and attention....that's why rcam
screens things out....

when the list first got together on a birthday donation, which
i believe was last year ( it was inspired by another artist's
list that does this.)
i seem to remember that actually meeting amy ray was
a 'fluke',, they gave the check to someone at the show and
ended up giving it in person.

this is my two cents..... charitable organizations as a rule send out
cards to the person in whom's name the donation is made with
the particulars. i think it would show a lot of class to just leave it at
that.

i remember the last time and the repeated dealings from some
listmembers with rcam .. it wasn't pretty.
i don't know where greg flamer is these days, but he could
explain it succinctly ;)

but in effort to avoid a flame war, i wont go there.
;)

i don't think it's all that important that emily saliers or amy ray
know that a donation is made in their name from the list.
in fact, i think such a gift may have more meaning if they don't
know.
just a thought...

hi y'all

i am the typical lurker on this list, enjoying my seven digest mails every
day and grinning and laughing about the little troubles you guys have
because you can't get to the concerts or have to sit on the lawn instead of
having a nice seat somewhere in the shade...;-)). i can't even think of
going ot any concert since i would have to book an eight hour flight at
first....but that's not what i wanted to tell yous:

i got my new apartment because of the girls!!!!!
now how cool is that?
i have been looking for a room for a couple of weeks now when i ended up
seeing this girl from california who lives with a friend in the coolest
part of town in an adorable little apartment with a gigantic sun deck in
the back.
so we talked like, you know, stuff that you would like to know from the
person who might move in with you and she told me about this girl who
looked at the room and said that she owned a rat and listened to punk rock
most of the time. she said that this is not really the type of person she
would like to move in with her and she asked my what i liked to listen to,
and i said something like: oh, i have like a real diverse taste of music(
knowing that nobody here in germany knows the girls) and then i said , yea,
but then there are times when i listen to the indigo girls for like six
weeks in a row( knowing that this is true and maybe even one of the reasons
why i move out of my current room....who knows....).

charlotte, my brand spanking new roomie, turned around looked at me and
said: move in! tomorrow!
now how cool can that be? she is from the states and now found the second
person in  germany who knows the girls!
when i went over there last night for our first dinner together we listened
to the girls the whole time and she sang for us( she really did and it was
good, too) and we both made our comments on amy and all that. i really get
the impression that this new place will be great and i will have the best
time there.

yes, that was it: my little ig story. everyday i'm getting more grateful
for there music and the things they do.....sigh......:-))))))))))))))

kathrin, if you read this, my tapes are getting ready to go on their way
and as soon as i find them again in this mess, you'll have them. my new
address is sonnenstrasse 15, 28203 bremen.

love you all ( i really do!)

maike

ok, theres a few things to look over before you reply to wanting this-

1) this is sarah and friends star 98.7 lilith fair special, a combination
of things taken from cds, the star lounge, and interviews
this is not the vancouver special!!

2) before i decide if im going to have a tree or not, i would like to know
how many people are seriuosly interested in this, because i may be able to
do it on my own

3) the special was 2 hours long, so its going to need to be on a 110minute

4) tia tejata is the winner of the lilith fair star search for so.

as a lifelong fan of the brilliant form of sports entertainment that is
professional wrestling, i can only offer my most vehement objection as to
how the featured bout between the indigo girls and missy eliott would go.

while i give the strength advantage to missy, since this is a handicap
match, the tag-team manuvers of the  amy "the nomad" ray  and emily "10,000
warrior " saliers would more than offest the power advantage. their harmony
in the ring is as tight as that as on the stage. emily, a master
technician, would slap on the 'galileo gut-wrench suplex' knocking the wind
out of eliott.

saliers would then tag off to ray, a ferocious brawler, who immediately
goes into her trademark "ray rage" (akin to the ultimate warrior's burst of
invincibility), absorbing the offense of missy before delivering her deadly
finishing manuver, the power (of two) bomb!!

normally, this would be enough to finish off any opponent. but missy
eliott's physique allows her to absorb more punishment than normal foes.
enter the girl's secret weapon: their valet, sara "the dyke of destruction"
lee.

sara jumps up on the ring apron, distracting the referee. while the
official tries to get her to go down, emily climbs up the top rope, with
guitar in hand and while missy is occupied with ray, jumps off the
turnbuckle and smashes the guitar on missy's head, shades of the honky-tonk
man (saliers' trainer). emily quickly rolls out with the shattered guitar
in her hand and  ray covers the now-unconscious eliott (who is bidding fare
thee well to her bright stars) for the three-count!!!!

ray and saliers' arms are raised in victory as "shame on you" blares
through the arena's speakers.

when you're iwo (indigo world order), you're iwo......4.......life!!!!!!

(ok, i need my medication now.......hee hee hee.....)

interview: indigo girls

sound off
indigo girl amy ray speaks about social activism and the lilith fair
by michael evans

the indigo girls' folk-oriented pop records have earned five grammy
award nominations, as well as an award for best contemporary folk
album for their 1989 self-titled debut. but the indigos --
34-year-old georgians amy ray and emily saliers -- are as committed
to the community as they are to their music; the women support
social causes ranging from gay rights and gun control to
environmentalism.

the indigos bring their finely honed harmonies to portland june 19th
for opening day of lilith fair's 57-date, north american jaunt. amy
ray recently called into citysearch and, as always, spoke her mind.

citysearch: did you think that lilith would become as popular as it
has? naysayers thought a woman-dominated show could be a commercial
disaster...

amy ray: with all these successful people on the bill, there was no
way it was not going to be a really popular festival. i didn't
think it was  big risk. i don't know why there was any question.
most on the bill had top 20 hits and albums that were already
selling. how could [the festival] not do well?

c: last year's show was criticized as stylistically homogenous, too
heavy on singer/songwriter types. was the complaint valid?

ar: i do think it needs to be diverse, and this year's festival is
more so. you can call all those who played last year
singer/songwriters, but when you actually listen to their music,
they all do sound different. there's a pretty big difference between
paula cole and jewel, musically.

c: lilith fair's concept of featuring only female or female-led
acts -- isn't that segregationist?

ar: when you actually look at the bill, there were more men onstage
than women. i don't think there is anything wrong with [the format].
i mean...who cares?

c: nobody would complain if the line-up were made up of all men...

ar: we would be...if a show like lollapalooza or the h.o.r.d.e. tour
didn't include enough women...

c: the indigos toured of high schools earlier this spring, and there
was some controversy and cancellations? what happened?

ar: we had five dates set up, and three of them were canceled -- two
of them specifically because we are gay...and one because of a
complaint about the word "fuck" being in one of our songs. kids
protested and staged walkouts. we coordinated alternate shows in
all-age venues...after school. but we went through quite a lot to
book these shows, getting school-board approval and all. so we were
very surprised when [the concerts] didn't happen as planned.

c: you and saliers' homosexuality has been common knowledge for a
few years, do you miss the days of when your music was just judged on
its own merits?

ar: i don't think our music was ever judged on its merits. the
mainstream rock press has [concentrated] more on our image...than our
music. it would be nice to read a story about us that doesn't refer to
how many women are in our audience. when they review pearl jam's album
they don't talk about the demographics of their audience. however, i'm
beginning to feel that we're being judged more on our music [now] than
our lifestyle. it's kind of old news now.

c : what do you think social activism brings to your music?

ar: i would be a social activist regardless of whether i was a
musician or not. being a musician just gives me more access and more
money to give and help with. [social activism] grounds us, gives us
this sense of what's really going on in the world...versus this rock
world of hype and fantasy. it keeps you from going crazy.

ok folks... still keeping our options open as always, but, does anyone know

not a phone call... and trying to work this thing out... i have met her once,
and she seemed like a very nice lady... also, there is another dave who works
with them... not dave ellison, the road manager, but the monitor tech...  i
think things will all work out if i can get in touch with either of these
two...   oh, and about rcam?  well yea, i know how much of a pain in the ass

it was hot & miserable.  my hubby & i had to drive 6 hours to get there - but
damnit it was worth it!  we staked out a decent spot in the general admission
chaos.  all five of the main stage acts were great but our girls were by far
the best (yes, i'm biased but it's true!).  i've been blessed to see them
three times now.   i believe that yesterday was the best yet (despite the fact
that it was only 50 minutes).  plain & simple they rocked!  literally.  my
last 2 shows were pretty mellow - not this one!  amy wore orange jeans & a
long sleeved striped shirt.  em had on blue shorts & a short sleeved blue
shirt.  like every other lillith it was ig who go the crowd on its feet.  the
set (to the best of my recollection - justin?  sunny?)

chickenman - sinead did a verse, great em guitar solo & harmonica solo (i
don't know who was playing!) + amy was in great form!
galileo - em handled sound problems with class; we knew what to sing - but the
crowd as a whole did not!  em laughed - very cute
shame on you - rockin' - the crowd loved the "fuckin' up" line
virginia woolf - em was in great voice - heck, they both were the whole set!
tried to be true - jammin'
get out the map - bonus: *beautiful* sunset behind the stage to go with "big
ball of orange slipping slyly through the trees"
cut it out / wish you were here - another rockin' time with a great segue -
em's electric guitar work was an *amazing* compliment to amy's passionate
vocals
water is wide - n'dea & sarah joined

ctf - fun solo courtesy of natalie merchant's trumpet player

perfect day!

thank you to all 89 of you (out of 712 listers - 12.5%) who took this
seriously enough to vote.

here's the final tally for emily's b-day list gift...

the top 2 are: youthpride - 51 votes ... and...
               (a tie!!!) nyac & habitat - 12 votes each

... bet you thought i was kidding about that horse race stuff, eh?!

this would seem to complicate things if we vote to divide the
contributions in the vote part 2 "em's bday vote 2-(divide?)"...

(why do i suddenly hear the chant at the end of "least complicated" --
"nahnahnah nanana nah..."???)

so far 35 of you have voted in part 2.

the tally for part 1 (# of votes):
1) slam! - 4
2) youthpride (atlanta) - 51
3) nyac - national youth advocacy coalition - 12
4) pflag - parents and friends of lesbians and gays - 6
5) glsen - gay lesbian straight educators network - 4
6) habitat for humanity - 12

i'll count up the votes for part 2 - em's bday vote 2-(divide?) tomorrow
- wed, july 1 at 8:00pm edt.

peace,

she's really really tallented!

youthpride received the most votes with 51.

nyac - national youth advocacy coalition *and* habitat for humanity
*tied* for second place at 12 votes each.

total votes cast in part 1 = 89.

so far 36 listers have voted in part 2...

i'm not on the list anymore (just couldn't deal with the bandwidth), but
while i was on, i got into the "if you like the ig you might like..." tape

by a group called kennedy rose.  i've tried to get some of their stuff, but
inconveniently enough, it all seems to be out of print.  so, i'm wondering
if anyone would be willing to make me a copy of any k.r. stuff that you

else, or send you blanks to replace the ones you send me.  just let me

i have voted and said what i think...however, here is a suggestion if
things don't go the way you want it to go with the choice of chariyt for
em....

go out and give your time to that charity instead of your 5 bucks...
habitat for humanity needs hands half the time more than they need the
cash....

and slam! probably needs you to encourage all young and old women you
see to stop smoking....you know, help via education....

and there are lots of gay youth who need a friend as much as a place to
go when they are alone........

donate time and energy.....  :)

just mho.

>it was hot & miserable.  my hubby & i had to drive 6 hours to get there - but
>damnit it was worth it!

i am glad -- truly -- that lisa and most of my friends had a good time.

but let me share my experience.  (if you're on medication, or have a
history of depression in your family, don't read this.)

after waiting an hour or two in the block-encircling line in the 102 degree
heat, complete with the aroma of a nearby dairy to raise everyone's
spirits, we entered the gates.

(let me back up.  while standing in line, we were provided with what i can
now remember as one of the only good parts of this lilith experience.
homeowners in bernalillo, taking pity on our poor baked souls, were
standing in their front yards squirting us with hoses and patiently filling
hundreds of water bottles.  it's times like that when i am encouraged about
the basic goodness of humanity and huwomynity.)

so we enter the gates, and immediately my spidey sense tells me something
is a tad...askew.  as we pushed onward, it became apparent.

there were 18,000 people packing a venue intended for roughly half that.

it was seriously bad.  by the time one advanced to, say, within 300 yards
of the stage, there was no room to breathe.  unless you wanted to walk
literally on or through people, or unless you brought some kind of personal
jet propulsion device a la "lost in space", you were out of luck if you
wanted to see the stage.  which i kinda did.

several members of our group, intrepid as they were, decided to forge
onward.  their labor was rewarded with a spot in clear view of the stage
and a setlist (go julie!).

but my friend arin and i, not prepared or willing to go into hand-to-hand
combat with our fellow concertgoers,  sat down near the second stage.  we
got to see k's choice, which was good.

we did not get to see even a fleeting glimpse of any of the main stage
performers.  which was very bad.

can you imagine hearing "get out the map" pouring out of speakers that
rendered the sound am radio-like, surrounded by people who couldn't really
care less about ig, and knowing that it is impossible to see amy and emily?
oh, it was sad.  sad.  each song was an exercise in renewed frustration.
arin and i tried to maintain a positive attitude.  after a while, i decided
that positive attitudes are overrated.

but at least we got to laugh at the drunk who was being escorted out by the
police while exhorting the fans to "stand up for yourselves!  this is
bull****!  you never even had a chance to see the stage!  don't take this!
make your voice heard!"  he received several amen's and you go, brutha's
from the less fortunate.

the albuquerque newspaper guessed that thousands of people never had even a
chance to see the stage.  that is the truth.

>the sun was setting as the last chords of ctf faded - it was fabulous.  we
>felt blessed & lucky to be a part of it.  if anyone gets the albuquerque
>journal - that's me pouring water on myself on page a6!  a nice bonus for a
>perfect day!

so i'm reading the paper, and i see this crazy womam with a "vote
republican" shirt (which i thought was odd until i read the fine print),
and i realize (via the caption) that it's our lisa.  it was cool.

by the way, did you see my picture?  it was next to the article titled:
