ok, now i'm confused.  i've been collecting what i think are song titles of
new songs that ig are singing since the release of sots.  and now that list is
way too long!  can it be that there are over a dozen songs that have been
mentioned on the list that i haven't heard?  and now are they being played on
the radio?  lamia referred to "it won't take long" and that's the first time
i've seen that one.  are there songs running around out there, maybe sst cd's
w/ songs sung by a&e, released without the ig name?  is there a new cd near
release?  do i need to get into the boot business to get these new (to me
anyway) songs?  help!!!

hello everybody!

here's a little section of an article i'm translating from german into
english.  my appologies for translation errors and bad english:

it's from an article called, "menschen zwischen grunzen:  die
polenausweisung 1938."  in english, "peole between borders:  the polish
expulsionso f 1938."  generally, during 1938, in his attempt to purge the
third reich of all jewish citizens, hitler ordered the expulsion of all
jews living in the reich.

as he took over austria and the sudentenland, the number of jews to be
expulsed increased three-fold or so.  jews were placed on trains, locked
and sealed, and carried across the border into poland (where they weren't
particularly welcome either) and set free with, essentially, no posessions
and nowhere to go.  they pretty much wandered around in the
?:demilitarized zone" between germany and poland until hitler invaded
poland and sent them off to the final solution, their second, and final,
train ride.

here it is:  enjoy!

"since many polish jews were arrested in their workplaces and in the
streets, or were apprehended from their homes, many families were
separated from each other.  in many cities, women and minors were the
first removed by the expulsion.  in other cities they were removed so late
that their trains were sent back from the border...  the modes of
selection were different from place to place.  in frankfurt am main, for
example, the president ordered that polish jews should be sent away in
group transport with their wives and dependent children, while in baden,
only men over the age of 18 were affected by the expulsion.  on the
contrary, in nuremberg, women and children were separated from men and
sent away 2 days later in a separate, special train.  this train was sent
back from the polish border, after the local jewish community had paid the
cost of returning transportation.

the deported were permitted to bring with them food for 2 days at most, a
slight sum of money (generaly 10 reichsmarks [probably about a buck]), and
a minimum of personal belongings.  initally, the police brought the
deported into local prisons, or held them in improvised mass lodgings.  in
chemnitz, 483 polish jews were interned overnight in a dance hall, while
in bochum, polish jewish men were brought to the local prison and their
wives and children, wo received transfer, expected to be at the train
station the next day.  in her memoir, ottilie schoenewald, the last chair
of the jewish women's alliance, described the practical work of their
community for the care and rationing of the expulsed jews.  because the
expulsion came completely unexpectedly, jews had to leave behind clothing,
luggage, food, and other posessions.  in chemnitz, the polish jewish women
were permitted under police supervision to return back to their homes and
pack up necessities for the trip to poland.  this concessiono fhte order
police was a well-planned measure, as it quieted the fright of the
prisoners and simultaneously made the task of supervising the transport of
the jewis' journey to poland easier.

this train is bound for glory,

chris ii

hey music fans in philly and surrounding areas...if you want to hear a very
good acoustic duo...these two chicks rock. they are playing at frangelica's
(215-731-9930)-8pm on 11/11  ...not sure of the address but its about a
block or two from 12th and walnut. they are also opening for ferron at the
tin angel on 11/18. their new cd-naked soul dance is great (not all
acoustic) (no 2 on the midatlantic local music scene). this is their first
gig at frangelica's and it hasn't been heavily publicised

so spread the word and come on out.

hope to see some other kind friends, igheads, ignads there

soon be to nothing - emily saliers

(?) the mountain road, saw the heavy load
with a sagging heart, and they'll break apart
voices in (the leaves?) stood as thick as theives
with no sympathy, for the beggar's art(?)

i have passed these pines, 'bout a million times
effortlessly
now i grab the wheel, fear is what i feel
(? slow unravel ? fear of ?)

(chorus)
and you tell me it's temporary, just a matter of time
by god, don't you think i know it's/(what's?) in my mind
and it's right over left, (healing the 'then'?)
i'll soon be to nothing, but i don't know when

well the way i flee, on my crooked feet
(?) a happy horse, on a one track course
and i self-despise, crying out my eyes
cause the happy trail, led me to remorse
but the road is long, and the song is gone
i grow empty in my cicada shell
if i saw the choice, i might find my voice
but i don't know when, and i just can't tell

(chorus)

deep behind my face, is a safer place
but the gears are hitched tight to the gate
it's a daily grind waiting to unwind
till i hear the click that unlocks my fate

----------------------------------------------------------------

i think that's where we left it off with our attempts to decipher what she's
saying on that 9:30 club boot tape.  i don't hear "soon be too nothing", i
must say, simply because of the way she doesn't stress that word "to".

ron

p.s.  regarding the new regime on the list: perhaps (hopefully) it's just a
temporary transition period, but it does certainly seem like we're hearing
much more from (and about) the list manager than ever used to be the case.
that gives the list a feel that you're not free to say what you think.  one
of the great appeals in the past of the list for me personally was to hear
the perspective (often on nigc topics) of people i hadn't been that directly
exposed to prior to listening to ig.  frankly, the very recent "six degrees
of ig" and "you know you're obsessed with ig when ..." topics are much less
interesting to me than getting a feel for people's reaction to matthew
sheppard's death.  i mean, i understand that fundamentally the only real
problem is volume -- people are busy and when there's just too much to read
through, you have start getting stricter about cutting back what "doesn't
belong" -- but, for my money, a lot of the wrong stuff is being weeded out.
this particular list has a special population that has more to offer than
just being a promotional arm of the official fan club.

finally, how it can be argued that a discussion of the nature and direction
of the list isn't a proper topic to be discussed publicly on the list itself
is completely beyond me.

leap forwards (billy bragg)

okay folks...you could say i'm bored, obsessed or just plain
procrastinating....i think i've just listened to 'i'll soon be to nothing"
thirty some odd times...got out the dictionary...pondering different relations
to phrases that i would swear that she's saying but kind of make me go,
hmmm...the only reason that i seem so obsessed with this song right now, is
simply for the fact that i can't figure it out--i wanna understand!!!....and
that just drives me nuts!!!  so...take a gander at what i think the words
are...or fast forward on through this...

i am almost positive about the first word of the song...even if it doesn't
really make any sense...

soon to be nothing---kara's version--a combination of the 9:30 copy, the
minneapolis sst and the nyc sst copies....over and over really, really slow
(dying batteries--emily's voice has never been so deep!) so i could attempt to
catch the words...

kill the mountain road, saw the heavy load
with the sagging heart, and they'll break apart
voices, enemies,  (at first in thought it was "in my knees"...(?)..yeah,
exactly...)
stood as thick as theives
with no sympathy, for the beggars art

i have passed these (pines/climbs), 'bout a million times (i think pines...but
in on the 9:30 it sounds like climbs...but, hey, if she's on a mountain
road--then it could be climbs...or maybe she's going to climb it!  )
effortlessly
now i grab the wheel, fear is what i feel
at the slow unraveling of me

chorus:
and you tell me its temporary, just a matter of time
by god, don't you think i know this in my mind
and it's right over left , (healin' / heelin') the vend (bend?)  (i have a
couple thoughts on this line:  1. trying to recover from a negative decision
with not so happy consequences which would suit the word "vend" which means
an offer/sale or to utter something publicly 2.)  turning, hand over hand the
steering wheel, heeling a swift bend in the road (like a sail boat heels on
its side 3. she's mountain climbing...ee-gads!  that's might be a stretch)
i'll soon be to nothing, but i don't know when

well the way i flee, on my crooked feet
barn happy horse, on a one track course
i self-despise, crying out my eyes
cause the happy trail, led me to remorse
but the road is long, and the song is gone
i grow empty in my cicada shell  (cicada: transparent, winged, lg, insect;
makes rythmic, chirping noises)
if i saw the choice, i might find my voice
but i don't know when, and i just can't tell...

chorus: (a couple different words)
and you tell me it's temporary, in just a matter of time
by god, don't you think i know what's in my mind
and it's right over left, healin' the vend
i'll soon be to nothing, but i don't know when

deep behind my face, is a safer place
but the gears are hitched tight to the gate
it's a daily grind, waiting to unwind
till i hear the click that unlocks my fate...

it sounds she's questioning the choices she's made...and everyday she's
waiting for her sign, to see if she's made the right decision, or a sign to
help her make the right decision or which decides her fate...in the meantime
she's afraid that she's taking the safe path instead of a riskier one and it's
not panning out the way she thought it would...i don't know...i feel like i'm
talking in circles and you all are probably like:  "shut up, already!!  we
don't even like the song!!"  ...okay, i'm done...but, if you have any thoughts
on this or want the versions that i looked at before i added my .02...email
me...

kara....who thinks the lyrics to the above are kind of cool...but the melody
after 30+ odd times gets a little old!!!  :)  cheers!

your friend has visited the chiapas alert network and recommends that you should help stop the war in chiapas.

** this is an automatic letter. please do not reply to it. **

you should visit the chiapas alert network at:

http://www.stewards.net/chiapas/10.htm

to help end the political violence against the indigenous people there. women and children have been massacred by government supported paramilitary groups. this has been happening in the america's own backyard.

the mexican army is now occupying the indigenous territory of chiapas in a "low intensity" conflict to terrorize the villagers there. a full scale attack on the zapatista army is imminent if we do not act now. many more innocent people will be killed if we remain silent. these people need your help. all it takes is a letter of support to the governments of the united states, canada, mexico and to the european union.

send a prepared email message. it takes only a few minutes of your time.

you can go directly to the automailer system at the chiapas alert network at:

you can make a crucial difference - your support counts!

i'll take a shot at analyzin' this baby.  it's late. i'm tired.  why not?  i
can always revise in the morning . . .

emily writes:

<< soon be to nothing

"kill" the mountain road, saw the heavy load
with the sagging heart, and they'll break apart
   voices, "enemies",
   stood as thick as theives
with no sympathy, for the beggars art>>

hmmmm . . . i think she's discussing the importance of something i can't
understand a the moment.  get back to me on that one.

<< i have passed these "(pines/climbs)", 'bout a million times
   effortlessly
now i grab the wheel, fear is what i feel
"at the slow unraveling of me..." >>

okay.  she's been down this road before, never with any trouble, but now she's
suddenly struggling to survive what used to be so easy.  emily's coming apart
over things that used to be so simple.  (or, in her declining years -- what is
she, 35? -- she's finding it difficult to drive.  just a joke ... )

<<   well the way i flee, on my crooked feet
"barn" happy horse, on a one track course>>

she's been penned up like a horse in a barn, but she's broken free!  however,
she's so unused to the motion, em is tripping herself up and twisting her
ankles, and is none the less fleeing towards her only destiny, which she seems
to later suggest is *ehem* death.

<<   i self-despise, crying out my eyes
cause the happy trail, led me to remorse
but the road is long, and the song is gone>>

seems we've got some more horse imagry here . . . first off, she's developed
low self esteem. (very good elizabeth!  see, i can function late at night.)
(#2), she took the road she thought would lead to joy and happiness, but
instead she regrets it and sort of wishes she had become that english teacher
after all.  and now she's got so damn much ahead of her, but she no longer
enjoys all this touring, is sick of it, and feels she's lost that spark.

<<   i grow empty in my cicada shell  (<--- every 17 years, like clockwork)
if i saw the choice, i might find my voice
   but i don't know when, and i just can't tell...>>

holy god in heaven!  all this time, we've thought amy was the tortured time
bomb!  this is a really depressing verse.  emily seems to be saying she's
withering up without the before mentioned "song" she once had -- that spark
and that joy.  maybe if she could change something about her life she could
regain that happiness, but she doesn't know when or even if that will ever
happen. (?)

<<   chorus:
and you tell me it's temporary, in just a matter of time
by god, don't you think i know "what's" in my mind
and it's right over left, heelin' the bend
i'll soon be to nothing, but i don't know when>>

people tell her she'll be over this and feel better soon.  but why the heck
can't the world just accept that she knows for a fact this is all the way it
is.  and she struggles to do simple things that once came so effortlessly, and
things that never phased her are killing her now.  she's struggling with that
steering wheel, trying to stay on track, but ms emily knows she can't do it
forever and one of these days -- she doesn't know when -- she's gonna run out
of steam and plunge off that road.

<<  deep behind my face, is a safer place
but the gears are hitched tight to the gate
it's a daily grind, waiting to unwind
till i hear the click that unlocks my fate... >>

she hides within herself.  back to the horse penned up, waiting to race.
"click that unlocks my fate" is the click of the gears unlocking that gate to
let her run.  but . . . ooo!  ooo!  breakthrough!  back to the "barn happy
horse fleeing on crooked feet on the one course track".  she's sick of being
in that little pen and she's waiting for that moment so she can book it out of
there.  but she's been trapped in that barn so long she fears she'll trip
herself up.  and while her fate seems so mysterious, she knows it all leads to
the same place.

to me, the humble analyst, she seems to be sort of missing the point that
while it will end with her death (inevitable for you mortals), lots can happen
on that one way track.  i'm worried about her, because i can't think of an
emily song so dismal.  it's a lot like language or the kiss (choices, etc),
but in that song it ends with her uncertain and the whole "if joy than pain"
acceptance thing . . . however now we've got "by god, don't they think i know
what's in my head."  and, "happy trail to remorse" and "i self-despise."
that's a tad more powerful than "i'm working on the grammer of my fears . . .
"

oh mercy!  to bed!

~ elizabeth

ps: i was at "the top of the hub" restraunt tonight.  in the ladies room, my
mother and sister and i got to talking with these two women there for a
conference.  we noticed their name tags said "atlanta" so my mother said, "oh,
are you from atlanta?"  this segwayed into talking about emory and lawn care
and how one of my relatives is featured on stone mountain, etcetera.  anyway,
one of them said, "this woman we work with . . . " and the other said, "who?"
and the first said, "lisa germano."  the name sounded really familliar, so am
i nuts, or was/is she on this list?

i had myself an ig moment today. = )  i was babysitting this little girl,
kristen and we were watching some game show on nickelodeon where kinds in run
around universal studios in florida and try to get adults to do crazy things.
anyway, these two little boys were trying to get a woman to get down on all
fours and let their dog walk her. and what did she have on?!... a shaming of
the sun t-shirt! i was like, "ohh.. kristen, that's an indigo girl's t-shirt..
they're my favorite band!" she said she had never heard of them so i went out
to my car and got my sots cd and played it for her. she was dancing around and
stuff.. it was so cute!

anyway, earlier in the program they played some commercial for another show
they have on nickelodeon called, "nick news w5." it said they'd have a segment
on lilith fair. so, i just watched it and i was really impressed by what
they're teaching children about gender equality and the presence of females in
music. they interviewed sarah mclachlan and talked about how far women have
come in the music industry. i thought it was very well done.
okay, well.. i'll shut up now. ya'll take care and have a good night!

hi to everybody,

i've heard so much about new songs ("soon be to(o) nothing" etc.) or live
cover versions, and i've not had the chance to go to any concerts of sots
cause the girls just wouldn't come to europe this time. :-(

that's why i'm wondering if anyone who has some good quality bootleg tapes
would like to trade them? :-) :-)

please mail me privately,

>from: e. moranian bolles, the badass lchrn lassie <wishmonstr@aol.com>

i'm stretching a bit on this interpretation, but here goes:

i think the key to this lyric is the word "cicada".  like elizabeth said,
those are the "17-year locusts" who spend 17 years in a cocoon before they
emerge from their shell and then die after one week.  the males make loud
shrill chirping noises, while the females are _mute_.  one species has a
13-year cycle.

>   "kill" the mountain road, saw the heavy load
>   with the sagging heart, and they'll break apart
>   voices, "enemies",
>   stood as thick as theives
>   with no sympathy, for the beggars art>>

i still think it might be "voices in the leaves".  that would match up with
"cicada", like she was driving on her favorite trail expecting it to revive
her spirits and she stumbled onto these cicadas in the trees and it got her
to thinking.

>   i have passed these "(pines/climbs)", 'bout a million times
>   effortlessly
>   now i grab the wheel, fear is what i feel
>   "at the slow unraveling of me..." >>

"pines" matches up with coming across cicadas in the trees making noise.
"slow unravel" matches up with the imagery of a cicada shedding its outer
skin -- it leaves behind a hard, hollow shell that's like perfect cast mold
of the insect.

>   well the way i flee, on my crooked feet
>   "barn" happy horse, on a one track course>>

could the "one track course" be the cycle of touring?  maybe it gets to be
the same thing after a while.

>   i self-despise, crying out my eyes
>   cause the happy trail, led me to remorse
>   but the road is long, and the song is gone>>

>(#2), she took the road she thought would lead to joy and happiness, but

teacher
>after all.  and now she's got so damn much ahead of her, but she no longer
>enjoys all this touring, is sick of it, and feels she's lost that spark.

do we have a date for that "ultimatum" that amy gave emily when it was time
to either commit to being an indigo girl or go to grad school and be a
teacher?  it might not quite be 17 years ago ... but it might be 13.  indigo
girls came out in '89; they were signed in '88;those purple parrot and blue
food boots were circa '85 or '86, right?

>   i grow empty in my cicada shell
>   if i saw the choice, i might find my voice
>   but i don't know when, and i just can't tell...

so she was on this mountain road, saw some cicadas and began imagining a
parallel with her own life.  and she's wondering if it's soon time for her
to molt, will there be anything on the inside this time?  like those russian
weeble/egg things that are painted like people where you keep opening them
up and there's another, smaller one inside ... until you open up the last
one and it's empty.

>   and you tell me it's temporary, in just a matter of time
>   by god, don't you think i know "what's" in my mind
>   and it's right over left, heelin' the bend
>   i'll soon be to nothing, but i don't know when>>

"the song is gone" and "i might find my voice" sound like she's having
trouble writing new songs or something.  she's afraid that, like a female
cicada, she'll be mute?  maybe she's intimidated by amy's new-found
productivity?  it certainly used to be the case that emily had lots of new
songs in the off-season and amy would struggle to write one or two.  now it
seems to be the other way around.  we still don't have much of a feel for
the dynamic between the two of them.  i have the impression that early on
amy was insecure about her abilities in comparison to emily (a leftover from
a high school "little sister/big sister" dynamic, maybe -- emily was one
year ahead of amy in school, right?)  but at some point along the way amy
found her confidence.  i dunno.  like i said, i'm stretching it.

>anyway,
>one of them said, "this woman we work with . . . " and the other said,
"who?"
>and the first said, "lisa germano."  the name sounded really familliar, so
am
>i nuts, or was/is she on this list?

she's the cellist that has recorded with them and was also on the
suffragette sessions tour.

"spirit of '73", actually :)

you should still be able to find the cd at record stores, and if
not, try used shops.  it's worth it just for the photos inside

i think that in sbtn, emily is grappling with a fear of mortality.  in
the first stanza (although the words are not all clear), i think she's
talking about seeing an accident of some sort in the mountains, and how
that makes her re-think, and even fear, an activity that had been, up to
then, a part of her routine ("i have passed these pines/bout a thousand
times/effortlessly/now i grip the wheel/fear is what i feel").

i see some connections between this song and everything in its own
time...they seem, almost, to be flip-sides of the same question--in soon
be to nothing, she seems to want more power or control over her life or
destiny, whereas in eiiot, she makes a peace with these things being
largely out of her control.

i think its a natural human thing to worry about death and
powerlessness, especially when its put in front of your face...just this
morning, a co-worker told me that a friend of his was in a cab a couple
nights ago, and the driver tried to make it through a changing light,
going 50 through a 25 mph intersection, and ended up totalling two other
cars...marc's friend's head went through the side window...somehow he
survived, and will be okay, but its one of those things...there are so
many daily activities, so much that we just take  for granted and don't
even think about.  death is one of those things that we largely put out
of our mind, fancying, perhaps that by not thinking about it it just
won't happen.  maybe that's why people on the list have called this song
"scary" or "depressing"...i think its honest (and having seen her
perform it a few times during the sst tour, i have to say its one of my
favorite emily songs)...i look forward to hearing everyone else's
opinion.

take care,
shelley

hi,

i wanted to say something about this song.  first of all, i am pretty sure
the first line is, "can a mountain road stall a heavy load".  the rest of
it i can't quite figure out.

at first listen, i thought it was a love song because of the nice melody,
and i couldn't understand any of the words.  but now that it's been
discussed a little, i am totally blown away by how emily can write a song
as deep as this about fears of not being able to write songs anymore.
how can she doubt her talent?  she is an inspiration!  this song covers a
wide range of topics
including death, insecurity, even a glimmer of hope at the very end.

this brings me to another point.  does anyone think they will break up
soon?  it's kind of a sad thought, but look at what emily is writing here.
she doesn't seem too happy with her life.  oh well, i guess we
shouldn't worry about that until it happens.

wendell

subject:      indigo inspired action, please consider!
mime-version: 1.0
content-type: text/plain

hello everyone! hope you are all doing very well. here is something i
would ask you to read, and one of the reasons i am sending this to you
all is that ig were an inspiration to me when i decided to start this
project, and they are still today, as i work hard each day to carry out
our project... this letter is kinda long, but it's worth  reading, and
if you read it all, you'll be the biggest pumpkin muffin!!
so here's my story:

in september i began a program with the institute for
international  cooperation and development, based in williamstown, ma,
through which i and eleven other volunteers will be going to a poor,
rural village in nicaragua to build a health clinic, and to learn about
the people and their way of life. liz and i are also beginning to
prepare material to be able to do health education and adult literacy
work. for the past two months we've been preparing for the trip,
learning spanish, studying the history and culture of central america,
doing practical work. it's been a happy and meaningful time so far, and
we're all working hard to be successful. but while we have the
initiative and commitment to carry the project through, we still lack
the necessary funds.

iicd is an independent, non-profit organization which trains and sends
students-volunteers like myself to third-world countries in africa,
latin america, and to india, to do much needed work in community
development . because the institute is independent, it has only two main
sources of income with which to accomplish important work. one is the
students themselves, who pay a tuition to participate. and the other is
people who want  to make a difference and find one way of doing so in
making a financial contribution to our work.

although the sandinista-contra war in nicaragua officially ended in
1990, conditions in the country are not much better. nicaragua is the
second poorest country in the western hemisphere; only haiti is poorer.
over half of nicaraguans are unemployed, and half also have been denied
the education which would allow them to read. the recent devastation
which hurricane "mitch" has caused exarcebates an already difficult
situation. iicd has been sending teams to nicaragua since 1989. working
closely with local communities, previoous teams have helped to build
clean water systems, latrines, schools and day care centers.

the place to which our team is preeparing to go is called "la
estrella". it is a village which serves as the home to workers from a
cooperatively owned group of coffee  plantations called "alfonso nunez."
alfonso nunez is still in the process of buying its farms, after they
had been confiscated and nationalized under the sandinistas. because
they are not yet fully paid for, and since time is running out to do so,
resources in the community are tight. that's where iicd helps.

an essential part for the preparations is fundraising. we will
undertake a four week fundraising trip to ohio and new york at the end
of november and want to have all of our project money before the
christmas holiday.

i thought about you listees because i have witnessed in the past how
generous you are. i know i sent money myself for the nana (amy's b-day)
and for greg's 'aids bike ride'. (hmm, your name was greg, right? i'm
away from home, and cannot check on the article & letter you sent us!)
... one of iicd principles is that we want to organize aid and get
support in a grassroot way. it's the reason why we spent 7 weeks of our
preparation period fundraising (going door to door and asking people on
the streets) because we want to offer every  person the chance to
support other people.. we also like to inform people of what we are
doing and educate them about the situation in central america. ...so i
am now asking for your contribution, because every small donations adds
up to so much :)

donations are tax-deductible, and they should be made out to iicd.
you can send them to:
julie c/o iicd
po box 520, williamstown
ma, 01267

if you want to learn more about iicd, don't hesitate to look up our
web-page : http://www.iicd-volunteer.org
and you can email me if you have any questions!!!
thank you for your support, and for reading this whole letter!

julie, who got out of bed to get a hammer and a nail ;)  (sorry, i
couldn't restrain myself!)

what a terrible thought. although we all know that if they did
announce a breakup, none of us could wish it otherwise, because we all
consider it important that amy and emily do what's best for themselves.
does anybody know how many more records they're bound to by their
epic contract?

here is a copy of an email i sent to the folks on my cooper seay list.
please email me privately if you have any questions.  thanks!

in honor of cooper's birthday, i would like to make a donation to youth
pride on behalf of the list.  this is how i plan to do it.  you can donate
to youth pride online at: <http://www.youthpride.org/ypdonor.html> or if
you aren't comfortable donating online you can print out this form
<http://www.youthpride.org/printform.html>.  i will be adding a link on my
cooper page as well.  either way, please let them know that you are
donating in honor of cooper seay's birthday.  if and when you do this
please let me know your full name and how much your donation was.  about a
week before cooper's birthday (which is dec 5) i will send her a card with
our names and the amount we donated.  if you don't want your name included,
that's fine but please tell me the amount so i can get it right on the
card.  i figure doing it this way means no one has to trust me with their
money.  if anyone has a better idea, feel free to email me privately or
post it to the cooper list.  thanks!!

i know cooper is amy's ex and all, but i really  have heard nothing good
about her. a friend of mine attended a concert of her's during which she
was rude to her own band members and abused equipment that wasn't even
hers.  i also know that cooper was not the nicest to amy during their
relationship---and if someone hurts my amy, they hurt me! not really, but
it still pisses me off.  also, i don't find her exactly talented, although
i know someone has to be listening to her stuff....okay, that is all the
cooper bashing i can do for now.

        me too, me too.
        but wait, there's more...
i was thinking about why i always think of this song as "soon to
be nothing" even though emily so clearly sings "i'll soon be nothing" and
i realized that they never use the first person pronoun in naming their
songs.
well no, that's not true. there's let it be me and you left it up
to me. but none of their songs (or none that i can think o, anyway) use i
in the title. which is interesting, because they write such intensely
personal songs.
is it a thread, or should it be dead? any thoughts?

i love this list.  i think it's great to hear about the girls and all the
things they're doing musically.  but does anyone ever feel like perhaps
they've been drawn in too much?  i mean, there was something posted here
recently that really upset me.  i felt as if someone were attacking one of
my best friends.  then it occurred to me that i had never even met the
person in question.  i hope i'm not alone in sometimes feeling close to
people i don't even know and probably never will.  what do y'all think?  do
you feel like you actually know amy and emily?  it's weird.

this email letter is to announce to everyone (friends, colleagues, and
people whom i wish *were* colleagues) the advent of a new segment of my
life as a musician.  due to the departure of in clover's drummer, and
the resulting frustration and confusion surrounding a 4th drummer search
in as many years, i have decided to do the singer-songwriter-solo-thing
that has always scared me to death, yet has always been a dream and a
goal.

i'll be taking the stage name "tara james" for safety reasons, and
because there's already a "tara mclean" doing very well on this circuit
right now - and that's a little too close to my real name.  i'll be
playing lots and lots of open-mikes in richmond, to calm my nerves and
get used to being onstage without the luxury of 3 other people making
noise to cover up my mistakes.  ;)  my first *real* gig will be at
moondance on november 19 (thursday), in richmond at 9:30pm opening for
local artist susan greenbaum - if any of you in this area could come to
the show, it'd be greatly appreciated.  don't forget to applaud loudly.
:)  .... even if i suck.... :)

in addition, some of you will be interested to know that i'm making a
big effort to bring singer-songwriter talent to richmond, to open for
and to make lasting connections.  some people with whom i've spoken and
who may be coming to town in the upcoming months include: michael veitch
(from vermont, opened 15 show tour for shawn colvin), rose polenzani
(currently on a bill with amy ray of the indigo girls), jane siberry
(canadian new-age artist), michelle malone (from atlanta and plays often
with the indigo girls), and hopefully a return engagement for caroline
aiken (highly esteemed acoustic artist from atlanta).

any of you who could offer help, publicity, management, booking, etc.,
to get me going in this new direction, would be appreciated more than
words can say.  i'll be recording a solo demo and putting together a
presskit in the next few weeks, please let me know if you'd like one (or
several if you want to help book me) - and give me your address - i'll
mail you one to check out.

i've enjoyed my time with skuttlebutt and in clover, and the band may
not be knocked out just yet - maybe we're just down for the count until
a new drummer shows his/her face, or we decide to do the acoustic thing
as a group.  in any case, i will continue to play solo, and try and
bring quality talent to richmond to play with.

thanks to all of you who have given me encouragement and support over
the "skuttlebutt/in clover" years, i hope you'll continue while i
attempt to launch a solo career.

sincerely,

tara lane

i've felt a kinship with amy and emily from the first time i viewed the uptown

i think perhaps people get too caught up in the artists in a personal
sense--objective comments should be able to be made about these people
without totally offending someone.  let's take cooper for
example.....the side of her that i am familiar with is totally
different from sheryl's.  one may be totally in support of these people
not only as artists but as people, but you have to be careful b/c you
don't know them really.  i think obsession is a key word here. i love
amy and emily, but i try hard not to become obsessed with the total
person b/c i don't know it completely. okay, that made no sense. justmy
thoughts.

hey all!
jmigc stands for just maybe igc ;)
to be as short as possible:
i have rose polenzani pictures.  i can make black and white 3x5's and 9x11's
per request, in trade for anything - other pics, boots, etc.  this is where
the igc comes in - i would love ig pictures if anybody has them.  if not, ig
boots will suffice.  if anybody is interested, get back to me and i'll get
back to you in about a week, after i finish my prints.  i have: rose on stage
playing, rose on stage standing (actually she's taking off her bra....but you
can't tell), and a close up of rose sitting in a chair.  let me know which one
you want.

sorry for posting this to the whole list, but where else could i address so
many people who possibly have ig pics?  ;)

peeps and punkins:

its that time of year again!  singing christmas trees in every
walgreens, blatant commercialism on tv, impending snow and ice doom,
dark and gloomy nights, and the indigo-list holiday card exchange. ask
anyone who took part in this last year...lotsa fun.  and for the mere
price of a few poetry stamps, you get to come home to mail goodies every
day for a couple of weeks.

here's how it works:
i'll be collecting a list of names and snail-addy's from those
interested in participating, from now until november 20th.  when i get
all the interested parties, i'll divide y'all into groups of about
twenty, and send each group member the names/addy's of others in her/his
group.  group members then send holiday cards (or birthday cards, or ig
postcards, or whatever else floats their boat) to all other happily
awaiting group members...some people last year got really creative,
designing their own ig holiday cards and everything!

you can define holiday however you like; christmas, solstice, haunakah
(i know i erfed the spelling), kwanza, your gerbil's first birthday, the
end of the semester...its a great way to say hi to other listees (and a
great excuse for putting off that last minute studying).  this holiday
card exchange is 100% organic, farmer approved, and has never been
tested on animals.

if you would like to participate, please send me an e-mail before
november 20th.  if possible, put something about holiday card exchange
in the header (or just reply to this message).

take care,y'all,
shelley

interesting thread.  i think in my life, i admire the courage and vision
that the girls have shared through their music...but at the same time, i
know that i don't know them, and i can't pretend to have access to
what's inside of them, to the smaller specks of their day to day.  if
this topic had come up (and i had been on the list to gobble it up) a
few years ago, i don't know that i would have been able to say the same
thing--i spent a lot of time, younger, looking up to people and/or
looking (not always knowingly) for people to look up to.  i spent most
of high school (and some of college) hanging out at a local minor league
baseball park, turning 22 year old middle relievers into deities,
feeling priveledged, even intimate, with every story they told me or bit
of information they shared.  even friends took on these huge roles, as
superheroes, as some image or promise that could fill in the holes, what
i was sure was bad or lacking in myself...

"everybody loves a hero,
an image to create,
the antithesis of everything
inside ourselves we hate..." --e. saliers, "left me a fool"

...heck, when that song came out, i wracked my brain trying to think
just "who" emily was writing about, what "inside scoop" lurked behind
the story.  as if it would have made any difference.  but i digress...

what i'm slowly learning is to take inspiration from the girls, and
other musicians and artists who inform and inspire me.  but i can't
pretend to know them, just because i have a few xeroxed copies of their
setlists or a stack of interviews printed off the internet.  and i can't
expect them to be what i think they are/what i think they should be.

a non-ig example:  a couple years ago, when i found out that shawn
colvin was straight (and, the one concert i saw her perform, quite
giggly-bubbly), i went through a period of not liking her so much--i
cringe at saying that now, but that's where i was at then.  i wanted a
strong, gay female role model.  i had this image of her as a certain
thing, and had a hard time reconciling the image i had of her from her
songs with the one i had of her after one concert...now i look at her,
and i see a great musician who wrote some of the songs that kept me sane
during high school and college, who is still writing amazing and
wonderful songs.

of course, this theoretical "hey, they're just people" only goes so
far...i'm still toungue-tied when i try to approach any artist i admire
(i can go to a poetry reading with 30 people, be completely blown away,
and try to duck out the door instead of telling the poet how much
her/his work means to me).

>another thought.....perhaps the face that we show to the list is closer
to the
>truth than the mask we tend to wear in our everyday lives....

for me, this seems to be true...i'm more comfortable sharing things with
people i barely know over the list than i am with people i might pass on
the street (even if they're the same people)...i'm (and i'm sure you're
all shocked to hear this) pretty durn shy sometimes, and not always the
best at opening up with people...

okay, enough...

take care everyone,
shel

you have to admit that there is subtle (or not so subtle?) hints of a
breakup.
any other thoughts?

"it's alright"

i feel that emily is just so reflective and self-honest, that all worrisome
thoughts will come out eventually with her.  it's just a self-reflective
thing.  she's not one to throw in the towel.  (proof = ghost, mystery,

about a breakup...i dont think it's gonna happen
really soon, but even if it does sometime in the
abstract future, you have to consider the bright
side...if they both or even just one of them kept
writing and performing separately, whatever
new thing they would do would probably be just
as good, i wouldn't expect less from them than
that!

and a little nigc...does anyone have or know where
i could find copies of ferron's first two albums which
are out of print?
thanks!

wow.  i haven't read my list mail in about a week and i come back to
only 167 messages...there was a time in my life when i would get that
many in a *day*!

here's the igc:
i've decided to take the next step and attempt to learn a song that
requires "fingerpicking", which is something i'm not at all very good
at.  in fact, i'm terribly uncoordinated...it took me a while to get the
srumming thing, and even that's not so great.  so, i'm working on ghost
now.  funny thing is, i'm not having too much trouble with it.  if i
keep practicing every day, i might have it down by february.  if i'm
lucky.  ;)

i was wondering if the guitar gurus from the list could tell me whether
i should use the songbook or if the version on olga would be more
helpful?

:)

they probably were saying circardian rhythm- that's your body's "clock"
that sets patterns of sleeping/waking, and other brain functions. a lot of
studies are done on circadian rhythm, especially in terms of the effects of
skipping time zones on the body; the "endless summer" days in alaska and
other places like that...

since the band's name is rem, that's kind of a funny joke... :)

cicadas don't exactly have rhythm... they are usually used as references to
a latin american setting, since that's where they're from. my mom used to
tell me how noisy they were where she lived in peru growing up.

hey guys--
http://www.airtran.com has really inexpensive flights to atlanta.  i did
a search, wondering what i would find if, hypothetically, i wanted to go
to atlanta on the 18th to see amy. danielle, and rose at eddie's attic.
here's just a couple of what i found:

coach class nonstopflight # 217fare:   $57.00
(not including segment tax & pfc's)
akron/canton, ohdepart   6:20am, nov 18, 1998
atlanta, gaarrive   7:57am

coach class nonstopflight # 175fare:   $57.00
(not including segment tax & pfc's)
akron/canton, ohdepart   2:45pm, nov 18, 1998
atlanta, gaarrive   4:28pm

yeah, they're *all* $57 one way.  that's darn cheap.  kinda makes you,
uh, wanna drop everything and go.(go go).

one catch-- they don't fly out of all cities and/or major cities.  for
example, they don't fly out of cleveland.  but they *do* come and go
from the akron/canton airport, which is about an hour from here.  so
just for driving to a slightly out-of-the-way airport, you can get
places for fairly cheap.  here, go here:
http://www.airtran.com/reservations/cgi-bin/flight_search.cgi
and see what you come up with.

have a nice day and thank you for using certo travel ;).

local bars, clubs, coffeehouses, etc if you are relatively unknown to the

local radio stations, but that's about it.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

sorry to write two messages about this, but after reading the article
about songwriter's night on nov. 17 again, i noticed they  had made a
mistake... amy didn't write closer to fine, right?  i thought it was
emily and checked the cd even to make sure...oh well.  i'm just
impressed they spelled "saliers" correctly (i'm thinking back to the
last concert in columbia they did where every one of the local news
reports had it spelled *and* pronounced "sailers")  well anyway, here's
the part of the article that is about amy.  wrong though it may
be.....=)

amy ray is best known as one-half of the grammy award-winning indigo
girls.  along with emily saliers, she opened the floodgates on the next
generation of singer-songwriters with the self-titled indigo girls album
in 1989.  the duo, while working together on stage, usually write
separately, and each member has their own distinct writing style.  ray's
compositions for the group include their first hit, "closer to fine," as
well as powerful songs like "pushing the needle too far," and their most
recent hit song, "shame on you."

gee, if they're only gonna name three songs, they ought to make sure amy
at least wrote all three...

glad you noticed!!  though shawn is known as an acoustic singer/songwriter,
he really does have some rockin songs(especially when you throw the full
band in).  check out 'this time, last time' in particular off one of his
previous albums.  one of my favorites ever....
those of you that haven't should give this guy a second look (especially if

how long have you been a fan? how many other shows have you been to?

subject:      rem, various rhythums, and why you should own up(nigc)
content-type: text

this is a topic i've *really* wanted to post for a long, long time.

the new rem (doesn't stand for rapid eye movement) album is one of the best
albums of the year - possibly of the decade - it totally is timely, yet
timeless, much in the way "automatic for the people" (god that album so
reminds me of my college experience) does. it's very moody, in depth, takes
a few listens to get into the "vibe" of the album. if you hated monster but
like older rem - buy it - it sounds like radio head doing "murmur",  i can't
even begin to describe the depth the album has to it - totally thematic,
really hasn't lost the sound rem is known for with bill berry gone, it's
rem, it's addictive, but it is amazing. how amazing? i'm trying every
possible (and yet i'm still unsuccessful) way to get to the taping of conan
next tuesday (my b-day is wed. yea for 25!) and even my friends who are high
up at nbc can't secure tixs, (this is where you, some lurker i've never met
offers me a ticket 8^) mind you - for one song - i'd drive 16 hours round
trip - i wouldn't do that for ig, but the album is that good!

don't base your impression on "daysleeper" very good song but not the best
representation of the album (again, think murmur or aftp)

get this album
(and if you want to heear the rem set @ tibet freedom 6/14/98
http://move.to/rem has it in real audio)

sorry for the nigc (altho it could be argued without rem, ig would never
have gotten their epic deal 8^)

(it's widely documented, not a slam, god knows i love ig, i just umm, like
rem more...if it is possible...)

my actions make me beautiful - rem "falls to climb"

anyone else a big heart fan?  i'm listening to a '95 release called "the

fan or just a fan of all-acoustic music - i think you'd really like it.
it's a mix of older, newer and unreleased songs, and has ann doing a
piano version of joni's 'river' which is good but really different from
emily's.  the version of barraduda is *amazing*. i got this used for $4,
so you might be able to find it cheap.  just sharing.  :)

hear it again for the first time!  wendy bucklew's first album, "rage in the
ring," is now available on cd.  the official release isn't until sometime
next year, but we have copies available by mail order only.  the cd has been
digitally remastered and the packaging is killer cool.  to get your copy,
see the ordering information below.

wendy will be in ashland, oregon next week for a special show at the ashland
creek bar and grill on november 18th.  jefferson public radio in oregon has
gone nutso for "asleep in the swing" -- it's their top album.  we've also
got some surprises up our sleeves for the spring.  can't give it away, but
let's just say that an amazing bill is being developed.

to order "rage in the ring" or "asleep in the swing" via snail mail, send
$17 ($15 for cd, $2 s/h) to machado entertainment, po box 39952, los
angeles, ca, 90039.  checks should be payable to "machado entertainment."
we're unable to accept credit card orders at this time, sorry.

as always, all pertinent details are on wendy's website at
http://songs.com/wendy.  see ya there!

please e-mail me privately.  i'm looking to get my half

if any of you have this boot, please e-mail me to set up a trade.
i travelled alone from cedar rapids, ia to blacksburg, va
(virginia tech) for that show, and it was a big deal.  does
anyone who was there have it?  lisa d?

thanks,

subject:      new thread--memories

hi y'all,

just reading some old disgests...well, from
a week ago.  pied piper asked what are some
of our good memories from this list.....that's
easy!

way back in march of 97 when the girls were
going full throttle into their sots tour, i realized
the possibility of seeing them live for the first
time.  i woke up one saturday morning with
the oddly strong urge to get on-line with a new msn
account.  i never had an internet account at home
before, since i didn't want to pay the money
and i didn't have the time.  but, i really wanted
to sign on for the first time that very saturday.
it took about 20 minutes to get up and running
on msn.  the first site i went to?  ticketmaster.
the first band i looked up?  indigo girls.
the first thing that made my eyes almost
burst out of my still-sleepy head?.....tickets
for a concert only an hour and a half away from
me in my own home state were going on sale
that very morning, in a half an hour.  so, that
one odd morning got me started on my
ig-concert / meeting-ig-listees fix....and friendships
and memories to last a lifetime.

a few months later, i was posting to the
list to see if anyone was interested in going on
a three-concert, three-day road-trip to cuyahoga falls, oh,
kettering, oh, and clarkston, mi, june 12-14, 1997, right
over my birthday on june 13.  i got several enthusiastic
responses.  thus started the hectic and confusing, but
fun, planning stage....which included getting to know potential
ride-sharers through introduction e-mails and quick
phone calls.  we grew as a group then and there, and
our fearless leader, don r., got started what is now
known today as the wonderful indigohio group.

well, a few months after that whirlwind of planning and
preparing, i was driving around with kate from ny and libby from
in, meeting up with don r. at his home, and other fellow
indigohians.... making some of the best friends
a person could have, meeting many new people,
all fellow fans of ig, and seeing great concerts that stick
in my head to this day.  since then, several more
great friendships have been formed and several more
great trips with listee friends have been made (including
the best one - to atlanta for new year's eve).

some of you (you know who you are!) have affected my life
in such a great way, more than you can ever know.  love
ya guys!  much thanks to the list for opening up new doors
to me.  yes, it's all about the music, but, then again, the music is
just a means to some of the greatest experiences
and emotions in your life.  value one another.  share yourselves.
be tolerant of each other.  sooner or later you'll find that this
list can be much more than just a place for jibber-jabber
about whatnot with people you don't understand or think you couldn't
ever know personally.  keep an open mind.  the electrons you send
to the list mean more than some of you seem to comprehend.

it's good to see in the recent digests that people are actually
talking about ig stuff and related nigc stuff.  whew!  thanks
everyone!

lisa s.

the best time to ask for boots is *after* the show, not before it.  trust
me, people are planning to boot it.  but no one wants to announce that to
the list and then have to disappoint a bunch of people if the tape
jammed, security caught them, their mike didn't work, they forgot
batteries, etc., etc., etc.   when people have a finished, satisfactory
boot they will be willing to let you know.

also, booters tend to do a lot of trading and they don't want to have to
keep a list of people who were interested in a boot they didn't even make
yet, and get back to them after the show happens.

unfortunately, in the time i've been on this list, i've seen fewer and
fewer people willing to set up formal boot trees, but there is a lot of
trading going on behind the scenes and if you ask for a specific boot
that someone has, usually someone will contact you.

just be patient and trust that, especially in atlanta, there will be
boots.

'dixie chicks'...evididently it's a newer country act consisting of
three sisters.  jo, knowing my love of the indigo girls, was quick to
point out the liner notes to me.  one of the sisters (natalie) credits
the indigo girls as a major influence.
        my question is this:
have any other artists credited the indigo girls as influences in their
music?

the mp3 file format is legal, despite the worst underhanded efforts of
the riaa.  it's a great thing for those of us who can't afford record
deals and want to show people our music.  it's also great for providing
high-quality clips -- i dunno about any of you, but i can't buy an album
without listening to a lot of the songs, and i can't judge something's
quality by listening to a realaudio snippet.

> ethical?
> a good way to get more music?

if you use them right and don't copy music that's not meant to be
copied -- yes.

> a good way to rip artists off?

nope -- let's face it: the artist is only losing money if you download
an mp3 and don't buy the album because you have the mp3s.  most people
just get the top40 singles -- they have no intention of buying the album
in the first place, they just want one song.  granted, that's still
illegal, but...well, so is jaywalking.

since they don't mind us bootlegging - making mp3s would not be
illegal, nor would it be particularly difficult.  i'd love to do the

hi again,

sorry for the nigc, but will some one who knows a good technical
definition of an mp3 post it to the list?

i can't define them with out saying "thing" and other
non-technical words.

thanks,
melissa

subject:      free bootlegs!  a nigc trivia query
mime-version: 1.0
content-type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"
content-transfer-encoding: 7bit

hey, y'all!

i'm feeling particularly generous today, and mighty curious about a little
query that my friend's partner brought up the other day.  so, here's the
offer:  a free bootleg for 1) the person with the most historically accurate
response, and 2) the person with the most *creative* response (that's two
free bootlegs) to the following question:

during world war ii, why did kamakazi pilots wear helmuts?

so, send your answers *privately* to me.  do not waste bandwidth!  do not
get yourselves struck!  i'll compile the answers and post them a bit later.

also, this might sound kinda dumb, but please indicate for which possibility
you are aiming--historically accurate or creative.  history can be wierd
sometimes.  i'm a grad student in it--i know...

so, i'll be accepting responses until monday at midnight, then have my
pallies help me decide the ones i like, and make offers.  then i'll compile
the cool answers and post them to the list.

let the trivia frolic begin!

sorry for the nigc, but is it just me, or is nobody posting hardly anything
lately?  have that many listees jumped ship, or is it just that nobody wants
to get a strike so they don't post anything at all?  i didn't check my mail
for 2 days, and i come back to only like a dozen messages...used to be that
i'd forget to check my mail for 2 days and come back to over 100
messages...what's going on here?

just curious...almost seems like everybody on the list has dropped off the
face of the earth lately...

this really does have some igc! i just bought disappear fear (the cd),
cause i've wanted it for awhile, although i haven't heard any of the
songs, and ---- bonus----- amy and emily sing on it! :) i guess my
indigodar was working over time. funny, but this also happened to me with
my mary chapin carpenter cd.

sheesh. i guess my igdar was really working...the nanci griffith cd i
bought (also my first), has vocals by a&e also. :) this is getting odd. i
wonder how many cds in my collection even mention the girls? this kind of
goes along with the dixie chicks thing, although listening to their cd,
i'm kind of surprised they mention them as influences. *shrug* i guess i
can see it! :)

i also picked up a cd by mary dolan - anyone heard of her?
she's a san
diego musician who has opened for ani, and i'm really enjoying the cd on
my first listen. kind of sounds like a cross between ani and melissa, with
some piano songs and some guitar songs. very very cool. anyone have any
other info on her?

thanks for letting me ramble on like this! :)
amy
