they came as pilgrams remembrance of six jesuit priests and thousands
like them massacred by latin american militia over the past four decades.

like freedom fighters poised to tear apart a wall of army secrecy and
oppression, the protesters arrived nov. 22 hand in hand, young and
old, able-bodied and handicapped.

their deserted cars formed a seemingly endless train that snaked along
the four-lane highway from the gates of this military installation to the
tattoo parlor and laundromat nearly half a mile away.

spiritual folk music filled the sun-swept georgia sky summoning
protesters to pound the walls of the home of the u.s. army school of the
americas.

divided only by two ribbons of black asphalt and orange-striped police
barricades, protesters united at the main entrance to fort benning,
lifting their collective voice in a single admonishment of the "school of
the assassins."

but the vigil was not a one-day event. it began nov. 20,
with only a handful in attendance. on saturday, numbers climbed to
1,500, equalling the previous year's maximum mark. by sunday a
new record had been set. official estimates put the crowd near
3, 000.  organizers said it was more than double that figure at 7,000.

celebrities, such as actor martin sheen and singer amy ray of indigo
girls fame, circulated among the grandmothers for peace, the
transvestites, gays, lesbians and veterans who made the trek to this city
100 miles south of atlanta.

soa foe vandalizes building

november 28, 1998

by meredith hartley
staff writer columbus ledger-enquirer

fort benning soldiers at the u.s. army school of the americas are washing
anti-school slogans from the building's walls this weekend after a school
foe vandalized the facility late thursday.

"i'm very saddened by this and i'm outraged," soa commandant col. glenn
weidner said friday. "it's grossly unjust and it's outrageous that the
american taxpayer has to clean up something like this."

willa elam, 55, of palm bay, fla., is accused of entering the facility
thursday evening and scrawling graffiti with a permanent marker. she was
arrested by military police around 11 p.m. after being discovered in an
office by a soldier on duty.

elam identified herself as a professional activist and told military
police she attended sunday's protest rally outside the front gates of the
post. she was issued a summons to appear in u.s. district court in
columbus and released. no date has been set for the court hearing.

in addition to being barred from post, elam was charged with criminal
trespassing, damaging government property and unlawful entry.

how the woman entered the building has not been determined, said weidner.

"that's still under investigation. obviously we will have to be more
sensitive to our security," weidner said.

there were approximately 45 slogans throughout the facility's three floors
that were written in hallways, classrooms, elevators, on doors as well as
outside the building. officials estimated that the damage at tens of
thousands of dollars to the historic building.

in one classroom, the words "you are not like christ, you hurt nuns,"
screamed from an overhead projection in capital letters while the name
plates of students were each scribbled with the word, "assassin." a wall
in the room was scrawled with the words, "close the school."

cleanup of the school has already begun and weidner said soldiers will
work all weekend to have the graffiti removed and the walls repainted
before students return.

"i intend to do everything possible to get this off the walls by monday.
i'll spend what must be spent to get that done," weidner said. "we'll
clean this place up and do our jobs."

the rev. roy bourgeois, of soa watch and leader of the protest last week,
said elam acted independently and is without any connection to the local
group that opposes the school. bourgeois said he never knew of elam before
being told about the events of thursday night.

"this is a complete surprise to me. i thought everyone went home,"
bourgeois said friday.

"she did not contact us in any way about the action or how we felt about
it," he said. "this movement to close the school is bigger than the soa
watch. i'm sure she feels very committed to this issue and wanted to make
a very personal statement."

bourgeois said that protesters who walked onto the installation during
sunday's rally and who were later escorted off the property by officials
were discouraged by protest organizers from returning a second time.

*********************************

i am working with a famous rock poster artist by the name
of bob masse. he and i have worked together for a while, producing
posters for various bands and musicians (recently this has included
posters of tori amos, fiona apple and stevie nicks). his latest poster
is called
"women of rock", and it is one of his most beautiful works yet. the
poster features the names of important female musicians from the past 30

years, written around the perimeter of the poster. the indigo girls  are
(of
course) featured as well as a host of legends. in addition, 20% of the
proceeds from the sale of the poster will benefit a list of charities
(each buyer picks the charity they want the money from their poster to
go to). charities include st judes childrens hospital, city of hope,
rainn and the arizona heart institute.

what i would like to ask is if you would be willing to help me promote
this project to people that visit your site? first, please visit the web

page for the poster at

'meet' market offers gifts, gourmet

by  robbyn footlick

   what: watershed.
where: 406 w. ponce de leon ave., decatur.
the players: the most famous - and very visible - owner is
emily saliers, half of the folk-rock duo the indigo girls. also
leslie zweben, ross jones and susan owens, who also owns the common
pond in virginia-highland.
the concept: it's a restaurant and wine bar. a gourmet food shop.
a flower, candle and card shop. a "meet" market. it's all of the
above.
located in the shell of a former service station, the
4,000-square-foot watershed looks absolutely nothing like its
predecessor except for the converted garage doors, which are now
glass and, in mild weather, raised to reveal the store's tres chic
interiors.
sage green adirondack chairs sit on the concrete patio in front.
inside there are exotic fresh and dried flowers, tables covered with
gurgling meditation fountains, bottles of fetzer chardonnay nestled
among pyramids of cranberry-and-lemon-scented soaps and pomegranate
candles, and racks of greeting cards - all for sale, and that's
before you hit the main room, with the food, wine and bar.
customers mill about as if it's a private party, chuckling in
pairs over sarcastic birthday cards, sharing whiffs of soap. others
stroll in as if it's "cheers," heading straight for the wine bar,
patting friends on the back and waving hello to saliers, who is
bustling about picking up dishes, taking orders for food and drink
and stopping to speak to her "guests." they're mostly young couples,
gay and straight; mostly childless (which is good, because there's
little here for children to eat and lots for them to break); mostly
fashionable.
in the back room, there's the wine bar and a wine selection that's
both extensive and somewhat confusing to navigate, with whites and
reds displayed side by side. small metal tables fill the rest of the

large room. the equally large front room includes the kitchen with
its deli counter, refrigerated cases with various cheeses, and more
tables of foods and gifts.
the food: with former horseradish grill chef scott peacock in
charge of the kitchen right now (bacchanalia chef anne quatrano
created the original menu), and a devotion to organic ingredients,
don't be surprised to see a locally grown, fall vegetable salad -
and don't be surprised to see it priced at $12 a pound.
other salads range from "old-fashioned" potato salad to french
green lentil with cumin and coriander, cucumbers with wilted leeks
and tarragon and chioggia beets in ginger sauce.
the fancy sandwiches include salmon, pickled scallions, capers and
horseradish and chicken salad with homemade white truffle mayonnaise,
pine nuts and sultana raisins - served on breadgarden bread, which
watershed also sells. side orders of the prepared salads are $2.50.
there are two soups ($5 a bowl) - one vegetarian - and
homemade flatbreads whose ingredients change daily.
   there's also a nice selection of imported cheeses and olives;
desserts, including peacock's killer chocolate cake; and tons of jars
of foodstuffs that usually serve as great host or hostess gifts.
the service: friendly but not hugely efficient, which offers ample
time to browse and buy more.
prognosis: if it can convert the curious into devoted customers
- and work on pricing and options for kids (organic peanut butter
and jelly, perhaps?) - watershed should be around for a while.
   just the facts: hours: 11 a.m.-9 p.m.
tuesdays-thursdays; 11 a.m.-11 p.m. fridays and saturdays; noon-8
p.m. sundays. all major credit cards accepted. salads, $5-12 a
pound; sandwiches, $7-8; wines $6.99 and up.

hello again!

we have great news! our new cd, "goddess chant" by shawna carol, is in the
running for a grammy nomination in the new age category. in order to win the
nomination it must receive one of the top five slots in the voting. ballots
must be received by december 4th.

that's where you come in. are you or is someone you know a voting member of
naras (the national association of recording artists)? we will send a "goddess
chant" cd right out to any voting member to review before the december 4th
deadline. if you or someone you know is a voting naras member, contact shawna
right away with your mailing address. email it to:

shawna_carol@goddesschant.com

this is also a perfect holiday gift for those who want something other than
traditional or commercial christmas music. it's choral, meditative, and
serene.

thanks so much for your help. even if you don't know someone directly involved
in naras, we'd appreciate your thoughts of support!

sincerely,
the folks at ladyslipper

hello. i posted this message last week but did not get any replies to it
so i am to post it again. can someone at least answer a few of these
questions? i would really be happy. thank you.

emilio

hello everyone! i have a few questions about the indigo girls and these
are bugging my brain! if these questions is too personal, i apologize
beforehand. please help give me some information if you know the
answers.

1. are the indigo girls making an album in the studio right now?
2. what are the names of emily's and amy's sisters and parents? also,
how old are they all, and do they have kids?
3. who is the little girl who emily picks up in the watershed video when
they are at a greenpeace function? she throws her up in the air and
catches her in slow motion. is that a relative or does anyone know?
4. is emily involved in any other business besides watershed and the
flying biscuit?
5. does emily's watershed restaurant have a webpage? if so, what is the
url?
6. what does sulli do when the girls are not on tour?
7. are there any webpages about sulli?
8. what is amy's guitar tech's name?
9. do amy and emily celebrate thanksgiving knowing what it means to many
native americans?
10. what do amy's tatoos mean?
11. does emily have any tatoos?
12. what kind of banjo and piano does emily play?

i think that is all the questions i have. if you know the answers to
them please send them to me. thank you all.

you know something?  i thought this list was a safe place that we would not
have to deal with such greed.  this really makes me sick.  i wasn't aware this
list became a  place for classified ads or a place where advertising a toy for
three times it's cost was permitted.  i think you should be proud of
yourself...i am so sure that amy and emily would be proud of you...taking
advantage of people like that.  i thought we were here to support eachother,
to be friends and to stand up for what the indigo girls are and what we all
collectively love them for. i think you are the exact oppisite of what amy and
emily stand for.  i thought indigo girl's fans were different...

peace and love to all of you out there that are not trying to take advantage
of people's desire to please their children...and who are not ruining the
holiday spirit.

disgusted!

i would like to thank the rest of you for reading.

hi to you all.

i'm new to the list and this is my first posting.:)
i just wanted to say hello and that here in italy (as in france..) very few
people know about indigo girls. in stores they don't even have their cds,
the last one i had to buy directly from usa, if you can believe this. i feel
lucky to have come to know their music, the first song i listened to was
"galileo"... i find their music really great, something i can't explain with
words, but i'm sure you understand...:))

i'm really happy to have found out about this list.

i access sites thru a government server here in b.c. ie canada (at work)
and some of the ig (or ig related) sites have been designated "off

and said "you are attempting to access a site that has been designated

really paying attention to which sites seemed to be id'd this way to see
if there are any common threads. since i can't get into them to see what
the fuss is all about,  i can only wonder...... thoughts?

so there i was at work, boxing up poinsettias, listening to the girls and
feeling a little bit in the christmas spirit. i started to think of which
christmas song i would love to hear the girls do. i think it would have to be
'little drummer boy' or perhaps 'winter wonder land'. so the question here is
which song would you like to hear? ok discuss away.....

fred phelps, the infamous gay-bashing baptist preacher from topeka, ks,
had recently traveled to wyoming to picket the funeral of matthew
shepherd, the gay university student who was brutally beaten, robbed,
and tied up like a scarecrow to die.

well, michael moore knew what he had to do. he got a winnebago,
painted it pink, named it the "sodomobile," and drove to the phelps
compound.  phelps and his family came out, and he and moore went at
it. moore pointed to the sodomobile and said, "there's a big group of
men in there loving each other right now."  as he said this, the
winnebago began rocking back and forth.  anyway, the phelps family
went back inside, but soon they left with a truck full of signs. they
were going to picket a gay lawyer or something.

michael wasn't about to waste this opportunity.

michael and the sodomobile showed up at the picket.  they set up some
big speakers, and a group of flamboyantly dressed men danced to loud
disco music on top of the winnebago.  phelps and company were so
disgusted that they packed up and left.  michael said a crowd of
people at the scene cheered. they said this was the first time that
anyone had actually driven phelps away.

speaking of christmas tunes...i listened to the michelle malone swinging
christmas at the attic cd, and it's fantastic! put me in the holiday
spirit (whatever that is!) despite the near-70 degree weather in illinois
lately (not that i'm complaining - i'm ready for summer again!)!

favorite christmas tune - have yourself a merry little christmas (the
muppet version) :)

actually, that's a hard call, cause i've been getting entirely overloaded
on holiday music working in a department store this time of year. has
anyone else heard "i want an alien for christmas?" it's truly bizarre...

i'd love to hear them do "o holy night."  i'm imagining emily
now, on the "oh night divine" part . . . woohoo!  or "once in royal
david's city," which my high school choir did one year, and it sounds
great in harmony.
(incidentally, i *do* love tori amos's cover of "little drummer
boy," which is available on some bootleg cds out there somewhere.  can't

http://www.pbs.org/klru/austin/

from that site, i found out under tv schedule and subsequently checking
local listings for december 5, that nationally, pbs is airing the
concert featuring the ig with three other artists.

i'm bummed because they aren't replaying it here in los angeles (kcet)
on that day.  oh well, i was lucky enough to catch it the first time it
aired last february.  it compounded my interest in ig somewhat, that
vonda shepard of ally mcbeal sang a duet with emily saliers of ig--emily
was seated at a microphone, and vonda was playing the piano and singing.
it's beautiful!  don't miss it, if you can help it.

there's a neat little bio of ig on the site that i didn't want to recopy
onto here--oh, what the hell, here it is:

*snip*
the grammy award-winning duo indigo girls and acclaimed
singer/songwriter kim richey bring inspired songs and
heartfelt performances to austin city limits saturday, february
28, 1998, on pbs (check local listings).

with elements of folk and rock and a penchant for songwriting,
the indigo girls - amy ray and emily saliers - thoughtfully
fuse their musical visions into an intimate and spirited sound.
they return to austin city limits following the release of their
seventh album, shaming of the sun, with a goal of bringing
together songwriters who share their vision. they hand-picked
three special guests ‹ freedy johnston, vonda shepard and mark
eitzel ‹ to perform both individually and with them in this
       intimate live setting.

both ray and saliers agree that there's a special dynamic in
performing with new artists. "i think it's good to bring a little
variety into the shows, it makes it a little fresher," ray says.
"you hear some new voices, and maybe some people in our
audience will hear new voices, too, and that's kind of part of
our mission." on austin city limits the indigos also perform
new songs, affirming their formidable artistic strengths as
songwriters and performers. songs include "get out the map"
and "shame on you," their first hit single from shaming of the
sun.

growing up in decatur, georgia, ray and saliers began playing
music together in high school. while at emory university in
1983, they christened themselves the indigo girls. in 1987 they
released their first self-titled album on their own label,
indigo records. their major label debut in 1989, also a
self-titled release, earned them a grammy for best contemporary
folk recording. with four subsequent grammy nominations and the
almost religious support of fans and music press, the
indigo girls consistently prove themselves first-rate songwriters
and musicians.

*snip*

and here's another little bio from their 1992 appearance on acl:
*snip*

the indigo girls may seem like an overnight success, with a debut album
that shot to gold and earned a grammy award.
amy ray and emily saliers actually met as sixth-graders in
decatur, georgia, and began singing together in high school.
they adopted the name indigo girls during their undergraduate
days at emory university in atlanta, releasing a single in
1985 on their own indigo label. they continued working on the
indigo label until 1988, when they signed with epic records
and released indigo girls, which went gold and earned the duo the
best contemporary folk group grammy in 1989. beautiful
harmonies and human, poignant songwriting give their music an
almost mystical appeal. not content to simply sing about
humanistic values, the indigo girls actively support causes
ranging from low-income housing to aids research.

*snip*

okay, if you are still reading, here's a delight i found on the acl
website:  when i clicked on my local station listings by state: a
picture of amy is on the left column, and emily on the right column,
pops up! (these column pictures alternate with a pic of lyle lovett, and
other artists.) i'm sure someone has mentioned this before, but it just
made me laugh out loud.

love and hugs,
diane - welcome back, karen =-); public thanks to janene for new easy
chords of ig songs.  shelley - what a thanksgiving! (will write soon).

shanie, i'd have to agree with you!  i am not a particularly religious
person, but i think "o holy night" is one of the most beautiful,
uplifting songs i've ever heard.  when i was in high school, it was
always a big honor to get that song as a solo in the christmas
concert... i never got to sing it then, but i've sung it strictly for
my own edification (you know, in the shower, in the car, when no one's
home...not too often in front of other people, but it's been known to
happen!) and it always makes me feel good.

with their amazing harmonies, i can only imagine the girls would offer
up a splendid rendition...

o night divine!

an oldie, but classic ig post for the holiday season.....

subject: the one gift which i'd adore

need some last-minute gift ideas?  having trouble shopping
for that special indigo girls fan on your list?  well, fret
no more, because for a very limited time you can order any
of the following delightful items, each designed with the
insatiable ig fan in mind.  please read on for descriptions:

for the child in everyone, we offer adorable amy and emily
action figures!  amy is ready to jam in her ripped jeans
with embroidered jacket (jangling beads and silver ring
sold separately), while emily sports her trademark overalls
and a white t-shirt.  each comes with six guitars tuned in
weird keys.  amy's strings pre-broken at factory.
(sorry, sara lee not available.)

hate getting up in the morning?  well you'll rise and shine
cheerfully with our new "first to praise the sun" _talking_
alarm clock!  forget those shrill buzzing alarms.  let amy
wake you up *gently* with her calm assertion:  "um, you're
actually supposed to get up now.  but do whatever you feel
comfortable with."

surprise your friends with a package of our homemade fat-free
bran muffins.  they're so delicious!  and they might be similar
to muffins amy or emily might have eaten once!

have you ever felt self-conscious at an ig show because you
don't have "that hair"?  well you can say goodbye to your
insecurity with our exclusive miracle wigs.  that's right.
just slip one on before the next show, and watch as you're
instantly transformed!  you're sure to fit right in!  then
discreetly remove the wig afterwards, and no one but your
date will be the wiser.  you really can have "that hair"!
in medium brown.  unisex.

been too happy lately?  need a good cry?  well, now there's
"the very essence of pain", a new compilation of the igs'
most depressing songs.  let amy and emily get you down with
old heartbreakers like "hey jesus" and "blood and fire", as
well as newer ones like "fare thee well" and "ghost".  best
of all, the songs are carefully sequenced to *maximize* your
feelings of emptiness and despair.  you won't find a glimmer
of hope here--no "watershed" or "galileo" to diffuse your
pain--just your favorite downers, back to back.  order several
copies,  and share the agony with your friends!  coffee and
cigarettes not included.

well, those are the goods.  unfortunately, however, the time
during which they were available for purchase was so very limited
that it actually expired just now.  we regret the inconvenience.

i-girl, who brings you glad tidings of great joy....because
"great tidings of glad joy" just didn't make any sense..

hey..

just wanted to say thanks to all of you that sent me info/advice about
tampa.  now i'll be able to dazzle and amaze my bro with my newly acquired
knowledge.  :)

speaking of said brother, i introduced him to ig this past holiday
weekend.  he usually sticks to broadway musical type music, but i snuck
some ig on a tape i made of the grease soundtrack (the one w/ rosie, if
you care) for him to listen to on the plane home.

oooh!  oooh! i have more igc!  i work at a college, and the student
affairs office is sponsoring three families of single, working mom
students for x-mas this year.  so, i'm looking at the interests of each of
the children, trying to figure out what to buy, and what do i see on one
of the little girl's lists as a musical interest?  you got it, the indigo
girls, (right along with the backstreet boys and the spice girls).  it
made me happy.  :)  (ok, ok, simple pleasures for simple minds, right?)

anywho, thanks again!

kelly

october 3rd, 1998

greetings
from the west coast...

hello!

it's hard to believe that a year has gone by since i moved to la. life has
been incredibly busy and productive. i've written almost 30 new songs with
some extremely talented folks. hopefully, one day you'll hear some on the
radio. i am slowly working on a new kristen hall cd. it's being recorded in la
at my new recording studio, studiorange, and will be on my new label, hook.
tentatively titled, 10 is 10, it will be distributed by amy ray's, daemon
records, which should make it easy to get. look for all of this to come
together in april 99.

let me tell you about some of the people i've been working with...

my first project was with writer/producer, peter rafelson (who wrote "open
your heart" for madonna ) and the band fem2fem... we wrote a song called
"darkest part" for their next album which peter is producing. fem2fem is an
la-based, all-girl, hyper-erotic, dance band. you may remember their top 40
single "obsession". anyway, we've become friends and i'm incredibly fond of
them. coincidentally, we are on the same album, lesbian favorites, by rhino.
fyi, it also includes tracks by sarah mclachlan, ani difranco, wendy and lisa,
k.d. lang, and more...

my next project was with joanna deseyne, who just moved here from london to
start her debut album. joanna's music is kinda like annie lennox meets
radiohead. very cool. joanna is currently putting together a band with members
of jane's addiction, porno for pyros, and sheryl crow's band. we have become
regular writing mates, and have finished several songs including one or two
you'll likely find on my new cd.

have you heard of kieran goss? he had a number one album in ireland this year,
and is a lovely man with lovely songs and a lovely voice. can you tell i think
he's lovely? lol. well, he came to la awhile back and we wrote a song called
"hand upon heart" that i adore. hopefully, it will appear on both our new
records.

one of my favorite new artists is jennifer stills. (yes, the daughter of
stephen) people, this babe has a voice that i just adore. it is soulful, rich
and destined for legendary stardom. bonnie raitt meets bette midler meets
concrete blonde. just awesome. we have written a happenin' song called "figure
it out" for her new record. i can't wait for you to hear her. also, jen has
recorded and is performing "memory #1" from my thumbprint cassette... it has
been retitled for a movie as "coming over me". i'm hoping to bring her along
to atlanta in the spring to play for folks there. in the meantime, you can see
her performing locally in la at places like: the mint, café largo, and the
troubador.

20+ years ago, i had an enormous crush on teen idols, the williams bros. they
were the super-cute nephews of andy williams, and used to appear every year on
his christmas special, not to mention my favorite show at the time, the
partridge family. in 1994, they had a top 40 hit "can't cry hard enough". i
met david and andy when they were touring for that record, and, to make a long
story short, ran into david again recently at peter rafelson's house. we got
together and wrote a song called "love will show us how" for an upcoming
michael keaton movie. it is the first duet i've ever written, and to sing it
with david williams... well, it was dreamy... sigh... david has promised to
take me to his warehouse and show me all of their old tigerbeat and 16
magazine memorabilia. we'll see. i'm excited about it, he's not... lol.

other co-writes include:

"it can be magical" written with and for my friend gail dorsey, aka
bassist/vocalist for david bowie. gails' solo stuff is kinda like, grace jones
meets sade. it's a wonderful sort of euro-diva love song.

"falling water" written with my friend barbara gogan from ireland. the best
way i can describe barbara to you, is ghostly. beautiful and haunting. we
wrote this song for the movie "snake eyes". it didn't make the movie, but we
still believe it will make another. cool, kinda portishead sounding.

"nothing changes" written with my pal stacy piersa. a fellow peermusic writer,
stacy is a child prodigy who has written r&b hits for the likes of take six,
all 4 one, etc. she is about to embark upon her own recording career and i
can't wait to hear it. i'm sure it'll be amazing!

"it's gonna be me" written with r&b producer, robert palmer- aka former member
of chaka kahn's band, rufus. we wrote this song for the backstreet boys or n
sync. my sister says it's a hit! we'll see...

believe it or not, i'm leaving alot out. it's been quite a year.

as for performing, i haven't been. i'm sorry if i've disappointed anyone, but
i really wanted a change and a chance to explore other interests. as you can
imagine, the daily routine of touring did not allow me time to do anything
else... just by virtue of proximity. my experiences here in la have been just
what the doctor ordered. i have learned so much about writing, producing,
engineering, and film it's unbelievable. i have met incredible people and been
a part of amazing things that i can't imagine having missed out on. i must say
though, now, after a year, i'm ready to make my own record. so... i'll keep
you posted as it starts to assemble.

i really want to thank martine and chris for doing so much work and such a
wonderful job on this site. the first time i looked at the setlist page i
cried... figures... lol. it brought back a ton of memories for me. i hadn't
read the interviews or anything. anyway, i just want you know how much i
appreciate it... and, all the messages. i read them on a bad day and they
really cheered me up. i even got in touch with some childhood friends, how
cool is that? martine and i discussed adding sound and video soon. i'm totally
into it...

with love and gratitude

kristen

subject:      ig doing holiday songs ("a very special christmas")

since we're all discussing christmas tunes, i thought i'd mention a
little bit about "a very special christmas".  for those who don't know,
it's a series of cds (a total of 3 now) that have been produced by jimmy
iovine as a benefit for special olympics (i know, i know....i really
don't want to get into the whole debate over special olympics).  anyway,
i met jimmy at an aids benefit this summer in nyc.  i asked him if he
would have ig on one of the albums ever.  he said, they considered it for
volume 3, but "it didn't work out."  he'd still like to get them
on-board, but i don't know if that would ever happen (jimmy's label is
interscope/a&m and ig is on epic....and with the whole seagrams/polygram
deal the whole industry doesn't even know what's going on).

as a highlight, here a list of a few artists on the other volumes which
might interest this list:
volume 1:  eurythmics, sting, u2, madonna, alison moyet, and stevie
nicks.
volume 2:  frank sinatra/cyndi lauper duet (fabulous), bonnie raitt,
debbie gibson (yeah, but it's pretty good), ann & nancy wilson, wilson
phillips, and an incredible song by sinead o'connor.
volume 3:  sting, natalie merchant, no doubt, sheryl crow, enya, mary j.
blige, patti smith and finally tracy chapman (doing "o holy night").

some of the volumes are still available (vol. 2 & 3) and you might be
able to find a copy of volume 1 floating around used (or possibly even
special order it....but it is out of print).  if anyone is dying to know
more, let me know.

cheers,
l'sly

well too bad i wasn't in paris cuz i would have liked to meet someone else
in france (apart from my sister) who knew of ig!

i discovered ig through the movie boys on the side, believe it or not! and
now all i find (cds,video...) comes thru the net! closer to fine wasn't even
released here. of course, ppl here don't even know folk music from pop or
soul!

btw, i read in a movie mag that herbert ross got his inspiration for boys on
the side from listening to southland in the springtime... isn't that cool?
and i could picture all the french ppl reading the magazine saying 'indigo
who?!' ;))

anyway, enough told....

hey y'all!

i just had a nice little moment today on the bus in jerusalem, where
nothing igc ever happens.... (that's the new official title for the
city, didn't you know?  it's in all the brochures - "come visit
jerusalem!   the city where nothing indigo girls related *ever*
occurs!!" ;)
well, it seems that's not *entirely* true, cuz today i was on the bus,
about to put on my earphones, when what do i hear faintly coming from
the radio in front?  "everything for free" by k's choice!  actually, i'd
seen their "i believe" video on mtv at a friend's (cuz i ain't rich
enough to afford cable! actually, right now, a heater is much higher on
my list of priorities.... ;) so it seems that k's choice is doing pretty
well on the european circuit, and certainly they're not doing badly here
if they're on the radio (where everything else they play is techno or
old george michaels stuff.)
it gives me warm fuzzy feelings to know that they're connected to amy
and emily, somehow.
well, okay, fine.  not really.  no "warm fuzzy feelings" - i'm being
melodramatic.
but you know what i mean.  it's nice.

in addition, it seems they're going to start showing ally mcbeal on
channel 2 (that would be channel 2 *of* the two channels israel has,
ahem ahem cough cough...) and as a result, they've started showing the
vonda shepherd video for the theme song in between commercials (they do
that here - you'll be nicely settled in for a five minute bout of
commercials, and then bam!  with no warning, they're showing a video,
and they give the title in a blurred two-second fashion, so you're
like... *what* is this?  usually it's some israeli song that sounds like
a cross between bad seventies, bad eighties and bad nineties music [with
some exceptions] so i don't care, but i was like - hey!  that's vonda
shepherd!!  just a *teensy* bit of excitement.

great.  so now i'll be able to find k's choice cds and vonda shepherd's,
but still no ig.  how bizarre can you get?

snarf.

peace,
michal

(their word) marks on my login attempt. in fact, since i used the msn
search engine, if i get to the same page, my attempts will still be
de-highlighted me thinks..... this could be very interesting. i have to
say, one site was a girl squirt site and was blocked for obvious
squirting reasons... didn't know what i was accessing tee hee,   anyway,
i will get back to you harrietbear:-)

hi.

could you please remove <mememi@mailexcite.com> from the list?

i am also mememi@excite.com, and resubscribed as such because even though my
service (who changed my email without asking) still forwards to the new
address, i couldn't participate in the discussion.  i'm sure you can
understand how getting two copies of everything on the list can be a little
trying.  thank you.

wouldn't "silent night" be amazing?  they could play it as it was intended:
for an acoustic guitar and voices.  i especially think amy would sound

so i was at coconuts last night, amidst all the happy holiday shoppers,
and what do i see but a rebate offer on maxell tapes...for every certain
amount of tapes/cds/disks/etc. that you buy, they send you a voucher
good to buy more of their products...$3 for a $10 purchase, $5 for a $15
purchase, $10 for a $25 purchase...it looks like this is good for all
purchases made between now and december 31st...i don't know if its a
coconuts deal, or if other stores have it, too (this is the first i'd
seen)...but, it gets even better:

coconuts (at least the chicago loop store)has all their maxell tapes on
sale...$12.99 for a 10 pack of 90 min. xlii tapes, $7.99 for a 4 pack of
110 min. xlii tapes.  so, i payed $30 for a total of 18 tapes, and i'm
getting a $10 voucher back--good towards more tapes! woo-hoo!  tape
fest!  thought i'd let y'all know, so you can get in on the good deal,
too!

take care,
shel

here's my vision for the festival of light season
amy, emily, anne murry, ani, kd lang, and melissa etheridge (and anyone
else they want to invite) singing silver bells - think of the harmonies,
..... the beginning of something yearly and beautiful and growing and
hey, a fund raiser why not....:-) and then behind them on a large video
screen would be images from various inner city scenes across the
continent. think lower east side new york, downtown east side in
vancouver, inner city detroit.... ya, have a merry commercial-mas.
p.s. for those in the vancouver, b.c. region - did you see the note in
the courrier this week re the gay choir!!??

i've decided to put in 2 votes, one 'amy song' and one 'emily song'.
for the amy song i think my vote is on "happy xmas, wars over"  by
john lennon.  and i just get goosebumps imagining emily coming in over
top with the really high "waaaaarrr iissss ooooovvvvver" part.
and for my emily song, i'd really like to here her do 'old toy trains'
i don't know who it's by, but it's on the raffi christmas album.
sure its about getting gifts and its a really material song that was
probably written by mattel or something, but the tune is pretty and it
brings back memories of my elementary school choir.  which reminds me
that i'm still really bitter that they wouldn't give me the part of
santa claus because i was (and still am) female.

hello all!

there are a lot of new faces (or names, should i say) on the list. as some of
you know or may remember, i signed off last june to travel the western us for
3 months to kayak, rock climb, back pack, hike, bike, camp. you name it, i did
it!  i paddled some of the best white water in the west and climbed some
classic routes in yosemite!

i met some great people on my trip. i even got to see the girls at the
columbia river gorge in or/wa two days in a row at lillith. i want to thank
lynn if she is still on the list. she is the one who informed me that lillith
would be going on while i was in the area. i had an absolute blast at the
concerts. they are definitely the best ig concerts i have ever been to.

in addition to lynn, i want to thank laura j.  without even knowing me, she
let me come and stay at her house for a night just because i was a member of
the list.  now that is cool!  i also want to thank laura a. for meeting me in
sequoia national park/kings canyon np and keeping me company for a few days.
oh, and for the killer indigo girls hat she gave me for my birthday (the only
b-day gift that i got while on my journey...and what a great gift at that!!).
i sure have made some great friends throught the list!

anyway, i just wanted to let you all know that i am officially declaring
myself back on the list!  i also decided to move from ohio to boulder, co so
if anyone is in the area and wants to meet/chat, drop me a line!

i missed you and am glad to be back!

well, since i just let you know that i am back and moved to boulder, co, i
thought i would give you a little concert review.....

for those of you who don't know, dar is now on tour with 2 other folk singers
(lucy kaplansky & richard shindell) singing all of their favorite folk
singers' songs.  the group and their album is called cry, cry, cry.  they even
have a song by michael stipe and co (rem).

anyway, i went to see them in concert and they are awesome!  the three of them
do a wide variety of folk songs which come together well for 2- 2 1/2 hours of
music.  dar and lucy's voice often blend together to form a very distinct and
likeable sound.

if the tour comes to your area, i highly suggest you spend the dough to go. i
feel that it is worth it.

hope the info was worth the space!  even though it wasn't ig, it was worth my
effort to let you know that they are good and worth seeing!

for anyone who doesn't know about this cd, it's been released by a boston
radio station to raise money for breast cancer.  there is a live version of
'shame on you' on it, recorded at the mix studios.

ok...here is my problem with this cd:

first, they edited the song!  the line "the only thing that keeps us distant
is that i keep fuckin up" is gone.  it sounds to me like amy sung it and they
just took it out when making the cd.  i can't imagine she would agree to
perform the song like that.  did anyone hear it when it aired live on the
station?
the second question i have is a writing credit.  the liner notes give credit
to both amy and emily, when we all know it is amy's song.  even more strange,
they list "amy e. ray and emily a. saliers".  what's with the middle initial?
does anyone else find this peculiar or do i just have too much time on my
hands?

i wonder if it is copy from their master of that show. if so, the "fuckin
up" part was probably nixed when they performed due to the puritanical rules
of fcc (the 7 deadly words u can't say over the air...). every time i hear
the song on the radio the f is always masked out. as for the credit, did
emily perform? do they give credit for the performers too (like on the cd
liner on ig cd's)? if they don't say emily performed backup vocals or such,
then maybe this was a blanket credit.  for the third about their initials,
wow. how formal. anyone want to take any guesses as to middle names?

i believe their middle names are elisabeth(amy) and anne. (emily). i'm not

well, if that is true... it seems a weird coincidence:

    amy elizabeth = a + e    and    emily anne = e + a

and, of course:        a + e = ig

interesting...

you can go to the mall
to find the perfect gift this year
you say that money says it best,
don't you realize that that's just weird...
i want a rubber band,
because i have a plan
i want a band o' rubber sweetheart,
so that i can just sit and strum...
chorus: i'm tired o' my spoons
i'm playing them now,
bin' playing for years
and they're just wearin' out
my moonshine jug is cracked for what it's worth,
it's just a soundless thang...
well it really hurts my head, and my ears,
every time i huff and puff and strain...
it's not the stainless steel,
it's not the broken clay,
it's just the need for strummin, sweetheart,
sayin' rubber's the way...
chorus:

peace all... kim ( who promises not to post any more silly stuff for a
while... was just in a mood...) :-)

hey y'all... was sitting home with too too much time on my hands and got a
little silly with putting an x-mas flavour in some of our favorite ig songs....
here's the first ( sung to the tune of three hits... )
picture, if you will a poor ol' hill-billy type mom + her young son on x-mas
eve... very little money... but lots o' hope an' heart...
ach ach achem... and the song goes something like this:

three gifts by the hearth son,
and stuffed poultry in the oven
uncle ben from 'cross the river
has some gifts to be delivered
could you cut us down a tree then
we can decorate by sundown,
three gifts by the hearth son,
and poultry in the oven,
there's a good tree by bob mezzer's
in the woods by his chicken coop
take a moment just to measure
i would painfully remind you
bout the fifteen foot high spruce tree...

anybody care to finish this sad lil' song??? :-)
peace all... kim ( who apologizes for her weirdness ) ( far too often ):-)

2 granny smith apples
2 red delicious apples
3 bananas
2 oranges
assorted herbal teas (caffeine free) and english breakfast caffeine tea
1 box medicinal "throat coat" tea
sliced lemon, sugar, honey, cream for tea
1 six pack diet ginger ale
1 six pack coke classic
1 six pack diet coke
24 1.5 liter bottles of spring water from local spring water company
(please don't bottle yourself)
3 23oz glass bottles perrier water
1 pint natural apple juice or fresh orange juice
1 bottle gatorade light (if you can't find it, get regular)
6 assorted hanson's or corrs natural sodas
6 bottles assorted fruit spritzer
36 bath towels (must be pre-washed)
1 water kettle to boil water only (without coffee smell)
fresh coffee and tea service
inwaxed recycled paper cups, plates, bowls- no styrofoam
cloth or recycled paper napkins
stainless steel cutlery
local newspaper and weekly entertainment magazine
new york times paper
6 local post cards with stamps

well, there it is.  that is for the indigo girls and their band alone.  the
crew, and lift are totally separate lists (and a lot less demanding, i
might add).  a little birdie told me that this list has become a lot longer
and more specific in the last few years.  we'll see how much gets used.  as
often is the case, there is much left untouched (sheryl crow/wallflowers
had the untouched food taken to the food bank).  to those of you seeing the
show, enjoy!

i think this is the version they did live, in the mix 98.5 studio.  amy skipped
this part when she sang it.
i was surprised.

okay, please excuse the slight self-congratulatory nature of this post, but-
at the request of roar, the feminist group a friend and i founded, rose
played in madison wi last night. she was so terrific, so sweet, such a
funny warm, endearingly flakey person, oh she was just fabulous. she gave a
wonderful show and if anyone would like a copy, i can make a limited number
of boots. we actually got a lot of audience members which means i have some
semblence of skill at promotion! yay. (we also, i think, attracted lot's of
new members for roar which was our big goal.) okay, that's all.

hey all.  i've got a couple of things that i've been meaning to vent out to
y'all folks.

1.  i'm myself planning an extensive roadtrip (not alone) during the dog days
of the summer of '99.  i'm sure some ig concerts will be had.
-to you who are also into roadtripping, send me your location and your email
addy.
-to those interested in community service, this roadtrip of mine will include
various projects.  if you have any info, send me your postal mail address.

2.  i just got around to listening to some of the tapes i received from the
list.  one particular tape is "amy ray -- problem child."  i love this tape!!!

3.  (personal problems i'm having right now)  do any of you ever get annoyed
with men hitting on you all the time?  right now, i have my supervisor asking
me out all the time...i think he got the hint after the 7th no.  now, i have
another coworker asking me out...and even wanting me to kiss him just for fun
while at a bar...i'm sorry but that's not fun.  i'm flattered, but now a
little pissed that i can't be a professional.  why can't i just be a good
employee -- without men bugging me?   it's not harrassment, yet, but i am
getting pissed.  when i asked one of my coworkers why i can't be just another
employee, she (a girl, heterosexual) said, "what do you expect? you're a
blonde, you're single, and they're men."

any advice?

-chee

*checking my bootleg copy*. . . yeah, she said it -- unedited, uncensored.
i don't know why they'd cut out the whole line.  it seems like it may have
been more of a corporate desision than anything else.
the girls also performed closer to fine that day.  i wish they would have
included that (i know it's the class of '98, but if they've got mr jones on
there... ), because it's my favorite version ever!  really tired, and sleepy,
but empowered.  gives the song whole new meaning from the 1200 curfews "got my
paper and i *was* **freeeeeeeee**!!!!!!!!!" mentality.

ps: the xena thing remined me: my little sister and i were watching xena the
other day, and she says, "sister, who do you like better, xena or gabrielle?"
i said, "i think gabrielle, but it's close."  she said, totally seriously,
"yeah, me too.  xena's alright, but i like gabrielle's style.  and besides,
metal really isn't my color."  =)

in regards to the bleeping of "i keep ****ing up" from shame on you, i have to
say that on kfog, my local radio station, the only time the word is missing is
when they play the studio version.  when they play the live version, taped for
a live kfog broadcast, there is no bleeping.  similarly, sarah maclachlan's
building a mystery is only censored in the studio version.  the word is left
intact on the live from the archives disc put out by kfog.  so, i'd have to
guess that any censoring is a radio station choice, cuz i don't see the fcc
hammering down kfog's doors.

my tuppence,
alison

=====
various artists
where have all the flowers gone: the songs of pete seeger
label: appleseed/red house
genre: roots/country/blues
file under: worthwhile tributes

the dodgy business of tributes continues unabated with where have
all the flowers gone, a two-disc set of pete seeger songs performed
by a wide array of notable artists. the difficulty in covering an
eminent folk prototype like seeger is that if you disturb his
simplicity you miss his point. seeger sang his songs with
elementary tools of the trade: a banjo or an acoustic guitar and a
voice. but many of the artists here-and the roster is a luminous
one, including bruce springsteen, the indigo girls, ani difranco,
and nancy griffith-seem eager to dress seeger's songs in fancy
clothes. on the title track, for example, tommy sands and dolores
keane diddle with a lush-and admittedly beautiful-classical/new age
arrangement, but in doing so they obscure the immense sadness of
seeger's simple sentiment. ditto for jackson browne and bonnie
raitt, who reggae-fy his "kisses sweeter than wine." elsewhere,
though, guitarists martin simpson ("living in the country") and
roger mcguinn ("bells of rhymney") beautify seeger's simple string
plucking, while john gorka ("the water is wide") and greg brown
("sailing down my golden river") add depth in the vocal department.
the boss, by the way, does a terrific, haunting reading of "we
shall overcome." in the end, though, the variety here prevents
flowers from entertaining throughout. still, no matter how you
slice 'em-from guy davis's raw blues on "false from true" to sweet
honey in the rock's lush spiritual "step by step," seeger's songs
remain well worthwhile musical and cultural artifacts. -bob gulla

armageddon virus alert...

it will re-write your hard drive in braille. not only that, but it will
scramble any disks that are even close to your computer. it will recalibrate
your refrigerator's coolness setting so all your ice cream melts and low-fat
milk curdles. it will demagnetize the strips on all your credit cards,
reprogram your atm access code, screw up the tracking on your vcr and use
subspace field harmonics to scratch any cd'ds you try to play. it will give
your chatty ex-girlfriend your new phone number. it will mix antifreeze into
your fish tank. it will drink all your beer and leave its dirty socks on the
coffee table when there's company coming over. it will hide your car keys
when you are late for work and interfere with your car radio so that you
hear only static while stuck in traffic. it will give you erotic nightmares
about circus midgets. it will replace your shampoo with nair and your nair
with rogaine, all while dating your current girlfriend behind your back and
billing their hotel rendezvous to your visa card. it will reach out beyond
the grave to sully the reputations of your dearly departed.

"armageddon" will give you dutch elm disease. it will leave the toilet seat
up and leave the hairdryer plugged in dangerously close to a full bathtub.
you will suffer the agony of psoriasis. it will wantonly remove the
forbidden tags from your mattresses and pillows, and refill your skim milk
with whole. it is insidious and subtle. it is dangerous and terrifying to
behold. it is also a rather interesting shade of mauve. this virus will
cause your nose to run uncontrollably. these are just a few signs.

be afraid of "armageddon"... be very, very afraid!

as for the igc, does anyone know which song rose is referring to?  i'm

"faye tucker", too.

can i just put in another rose plug here?  she has personally responded

in cincinatti (known for it's conservatism), webn seems to pride itself
on playing songs un-edited.  i'm sure they'd leave shame on you alone
(of course, since they're a hard/classic rock station, they'd never play
it :-).  they do mention quite often that the fcc gets on them about it,
and they might even get fined.  it does seem like the station can get
away with it easily enough though.

contains two songs:  1.  shame on you-- radio edit;   2.  shame on you.
and, yes, song 1 has that much-maligned-in-irmo part cut out of it.  the
fine print at the bottom of the disc says it's a "special version" of
the song.  anyways, i'm thinking that whether or not a station airs a
bleeped version or not probably depends on whether or not they received
a bleeped version from epic.  if they did, then that's the version they
play.  if they didn't, then the choice (to bleep or not to bleep, that
is the...) is up to the station heads.

jill is correct, the stations are sent both cuts of the recording. then due
to the program format of the staion, they then decide on which version or cut
is suitable for "their" listening audience. the fcc does frown down upon those
stations that play the original version but it still gets played, you just
have to find those stations.  this info was given to me by a friend that works
in radio, he is a programer and yes! he plays the girls on a regular basis "
not censored"!!

   have a great monday !

okay, so i'm listenin to my rop cd, as i'm prone to do, and suddenly i start
to wonder, what the hell is that whole "white, tongue, rope, fear" thing all
about?  and then, like a smack in the face, it occurs to me.

could it be about a lynching???

amy said once that the song came out of a bike ride she took where she
stumbled across two slave graves for people of those names.  i can't
remember where she said this.

do y'all think i'm crazy?  and who got a bullet in the head?

the reason that this discussion started in the first place was because i
bought a cd of live music from a local radio station.  'shame on you' was
included on the cd, but was missing an entire line, not just the "f" word:

"the only thing that keeps us distant is that i keep fuckin' up"

needless to say, it made the song sound kind of funny.

the cd also gave writing credit to both amy and emily.

twelve indigo days of christmas:

a lone coyote in a cedar tree
two stories above the street (or two day suitcase)
three hits to the heart
four years prostrate to the higher mind
five prairie dogs and a rabbit (she hasn't run over them yet) (or a
faaaammmliy of fivvvvve..)
a table set for six
seven b-grade movies
eight hundred miles to el paso
nine girls in bars
ten million miles of road (or ten dollar raise)
eleven intimate strangers
twelve statues of lovers

i believe the actual lyric is actually "white chain rope, fear". i
think it is about a lynching, although my guess is that it's intended to
be a series of images rather than a cohesive picture.
