i feel like everyone is so upset that they cut one word from the song, or
blur it, or whatever.  i can understand being upset because a station cuts a
whole line from the song, but one word is not changing amy's vision for this
song.  i think of four-letter words as words, but i don't think i would want
my kids to hear that played on the radio unless i knew they heard it...
maybe i'm being ultra-conservative here, but there comes a time when we need
to take into account everyone's feelings and ideals.  we cannot accommodate
everyone by playing only the music they want to hear on the radio, but why
can't we accommodate the few that are uncomfortable about hearing "fuckin'
up" on their carpool drive home.  maybe i'm making a bigger deal of this
than need be, but it's just been bothering me while reading everyone's
posts.

roll the dice is an unrecorded song by a foreign group (i keep
thinking swedish, but i know that's wrong) called the kostars. it made its
way to  the sst setlist (i'm assuming) through josephine wiggs, who's
worked on some independent projects with them and i think produced at
least a couple of tracks off their last album.
        that's all i know. sorry... :)

hey,

ok, so i e-mailed rcam about this, but everyone knows how punctual they
can be, so i can't say as i expect a reply. does anyone know anything
about the availability of the black baseball hat with the blue ig
insignia? i only ask because i know they've been around for awhile and
sometimes they run out of old stuff and don't reorder or whatever, so if
anyone's ordered fairly recently and happens to know that they are still
available, please let me know a.s.a.p. it's for a xmas present.

thanx bunches!

actually, the kostars are not foreign...  they are viv and jill from luscious
jackson, and they have one album out, ("klassics with a k").  good album. the
song, "roll the dice," is not on it, but if you're right and it is an
unrecorded song by them, then the person who introduced it to the suffragette
band was probably not josephine wiggs, but kate schellenbach of luscious
jackson.

like someone else already posted, the lyric is "white chain rope
fear."  i just love how amy can be so evocative in so few words . . .

> amy said once that the song came out of a bike ride she took where she
> stumbled across two slave graves for people of those names.  i can't

i believe this is in the _1200 curfews_ liner notes.  she also
says that she's never quite sure what the song's really about, either . .
.  but i think there's a good possibility that a lynchinc could have
something to do with it.

> do y'all think i'm crazy?  and who got a bullet in the head?

amy was referring to the anti-war activist owner of a bookstore in
north carolina, bob sheldon, who was protesting the events of the gulf
war.  he was shot inside the store.  (this information is in the faq in a
little more detail.  the faq url is, as always, at the bottom of the

while we're sharing, i thought i'd post the girls verison . . .

******

the water is wide (traditional)
-------------------------------
this is the indigo girls' version with
bonnie raitt, and pretty much the
same as the indigo purple parrot version.

chords:
a     x0222x
a5    x02200
esus  x2220x
e     x2210x

picking pattern
e ----------------------------------
b -------2-3-2----------2---2---
g -----2-------2------2---2---2-
d ---2--------------2-------------
a -0--------------0---------------
e ----------------------------------

the above diagram depicts the picking pattern
used for the entire song, using the "a" chord
as an example.  just play the correct strings
in the right order with each chord, and
viola!, you have yourself this song.

*verse one*
a
the water is wide, i can't cross over
    a5      esus
and neither i
           e
have wings to fly
          a5   a
give me a boat that can carry two
a
and we both shall row, my love and i

*verse two*
a
my love is gentle, and love is kind
             a5   esus
the sweetest flower
              e
when first it blooms
               a5   a
but love grows old
a
and waxes cold
a
and fades away like morning dew

*verse three*
a
there is a ship that sails the sea
             a5
she's loaded deep
esus        e
as deep can be
a5         a
but not as deep as the love i made
a
i know not how to sink or swim

*play one full verse as this is the bridge*

*verse four*
a
the water is wide, i can't cross over
    a5      esus
and neither i
              e
have wings to fly
          a5
give me a boat
a
that can carry two
a
and both shall row, my love and i
a
and both shall row
a
my love and i

they're not foreign ;)..the kostars are vivian trimble, keyboardist,
and jill cunniff, vocalist/bassist of luscious jackson.

it made its

she recorded, produced, and mixed tracks off of their album and kate
schellenbach played drums on the tracks.  here's clip of a july 23,
1998 article that sherlyn koo posted from rocktropolis..this is kate
schellenbach speaking..

"i haven't seen a [tape] yet, though, and since i'm the only drummer,
there's a lot for me to learn," she says. "i saw amy ray, and she said
she wrote a song for the event. there will probably be some cool
covers and some original stuff. josephine and i are talking of
covering a kostars song called 'roll the dice,' which is not on the
record." the record she's talking
about is klassics with a "k" by the luscious jackson side project that
wiggs produced.

if anyone wants the whole article..email me and i'll send it to you.

hi everyone,

i figured since i had a little first hand information about the sst cd i'd
share.
while i was in ga on the 18th of november, i asked amy what the deal was with
sst cd, she explained that she wasn't sure what they were gonna do with it. i
added that my experience at sst was one of the finest night of my life and
*really* hoped that she would find a way to release it. amy continued, that
they were goin to tour again next year and would also record the tour. it
would give them more material to choose from. amy finished by sayin, that she
knew there were boots of the shows out there.. and that would have to do for
now. (of course i smiled and told her i had them already.. she chuckled and
smiled back)

so that's the information i have. i do remember during the sst performance i
was at, someone standing next to me shouted to amy: "how about a sst cd?" to
which amy responded with a thumbs -up. i guess it's something that will happen
in the future.

hee.  you're right, josephine *did* work on some of the tracks on the
kostars' album, klassics with a 'k'.  however, they're not swedish.  the
kostars are jill cunniff and vivian trimble, both of luscious jackson.
kate (she's great!) schellenbach and josephine both appear on/help out
with their album.  so, no foreigners there, just a side project from the
luscious girls.  :)
fyi, the kostars are on the grand royal records label, the same label
which josephine's side project, the josephine wiggs experience, is on.
i have a promo disc from grand royal, which gives
http://www.grandroyal.com as their website.  it may have changed, the cd
is from '97, i don't know.  but definitely check their stuff out.  there
used to be (hopefully he still is) a guy named ben lee, on grand royal.
i think he's australian (???).  acoustic softie stuff.  so adorable.  "i
wrote my last love song/ it stinks," he sings on end of an era (which
appears on my sampler cd).  so find him too.  he's worth it.

would you like fries with that?

i know when i went to a come concert and talked to thalia, she wasn't sure
that a cd would be released, or even if there would be another tour.
hopefully everyone decides to do it again because it was just the best
concert. i know thalia would be more than happy to do it again, so i'd be
thoroughly stoked if it happened.

i know that the philly audience was miked. as in, to catch them audience
moments, for cd purposes. and i think they recorded every show, for
posterity at least.  in addition, sulli was videotaping at the detroit
show (she has some nice footage of marivel, jami, and me pogoing up and
down in the front row during power of two ;)) and could've been at other
ones, i can't remember.
as for the cd release:  both jane siberry and thalia zedek have told me
they think there's gonna be one released, but haven't heard anything
more on the subject.

alright, if you haven't sent the money for the shirts you've ordered yet,
and haven't contacted me regarding your order, please do so asap. i've
sent out at least one round of personal emails to people who initially
placed an order, but i might have missed you, so if you're not sure if you
ordered, but you're sure you haven't gotten a shirt yet, please email me.
i'll be going away for a few weeks on the 18th of december, so if i'm not
able to get your shirt out before then, it won't be until well after the
holidays.

and now for something completely different...

i need lots of good karma or prayers or whatever for wed. afternoon
because i have a very scary doctor's appointment at 2:30... i could use
some positive thoughts...

sorry about all the t-shirt emails lately...i'd just like to wrap it all
up before the holidays! thanks for letting me organize this - it really
was a lot of fun, and i might be crazy, but i'd even do it again.

for those of you on the waiting list, i'll let you know as soon as i do -
hopefully within a week or so...

thanks,
amy

subject:      ampa newsletter (igc)

a friend sent me a copy of an article that appeared in the ampa
newsletter (what ampa stands for....i can't recall, but it's for people
in the recording industry) and there was some interesting ig related
content.

in the "reels n' reals" column (kind of a gossip column for the music
industry) ig related projects got several mentions.  first, suff sessions
is rumored to be putting out a disc on a&m (which seems a little odd, but
hey, the city of angels soundtrack was put out on warner bros...so who am
i to say) with a possible release date of march 16th.  seems a little
optimistic to me.....

second, there is talk that the guiness fleadh tour will be putting out a
disc like the tibetan freedom and lilith discs of last year.  mean
fiddler who put on the tour will probably release this on one of the poly
gram companies...but given poly gram's situation (ie, the seagrams deal)
that disc will be a while in coming.  artists headlining the fleadh
include:  ig, dar williams, tracy chapman, sinead o'connor, susan
mckeown, patti smith, frances black, mary black and rosanne cash (not to
mention the saw doctors!).

lastly, one close to my heart, there is talk that there will be a matthew
shepard tribute disc.  a rumored title is "an angel with new wings" (this
line is the first line of the poem that his cousin wrote for the
funeral....i have a copy if anyone wants it).  it would most likely be a
benefit for the human rights campaign.  although it is unmentioned in the
story, ig would be a natural candidate for appearing on the album.  i
envision this would probably look like the out loud disc, but a bit more
somber.

finally, my standard disclaimer on this stuff.....this appeared in a
rumor/gossip column.  there is a significant chance that all or none of
the above material might not happen (and there's a chance that it all
might happen).  as with anything in the recording industry, don't hold
your breath for it until it's on the shelf at your local music store.

cheers,
l'sly

okay, all i have to say is that if you live in atlanta you need to be at
eddie's attic tonight at 8pm sharp. =)  doria roberts is opening for halcyon!
i can't say that i know much about halcyon, but doria is absolutely not to be
missed!  she is truly a great talent!  also, tonight is the first night you
can get her new cd!  she just got them herself and will have them for sale at
the show.  maybe they'll even be giftwrapped for the holidays!  please come
and support some wonderful local talent.  i promise you'll not be
disappointed! =)  peace, love, and stop lights, sarah

hey y'all.
i don't live in atlanta.  i wish i did, however my wonderful cable
service for some reason is going to start picking up an atlanta affiliate
starting the 23rd!  why atlanta?  i don't know, i mean, it's really random.
okay, i'm excited and i was wondering for those of you who live in atlanta,
what is wtbs?  is this equal to national abc, nbc, cbs, fox, upn or wb.  also,
i remember someone saying something about ig on local tv...now that i get this
station, could someone e mail me privately and tell me what's going to be on
and when?  are there any other local shows that are good that air on this
station?

peace out,

wtbs is a "super station".  something like usa.  it's not really local
except for sometimes it shows atlanta sports.

sorry for any confusion guys....when i say shawn only date, i mean that it
is a shawn solo performance(no band(no julie, david, kevin, marty)), not
that he is the only act to perform at that particular show.  that i don't

vote for mathew shepard for man of the year!

it would be a great statement showing that his death did in fact stir
things up and that we noticed and don't want it to happening again.

time's man of the year at:
http://cgi.pathfinder.com/time/moy/index.html

note:
this takes about a minute to do. i voted and then saw the results --
matthew
is very much in the lead.

season's greetings members!
:)
its been a while since murmurs has written you... has everyone been as busy
as us fan-club girls here at nettwerk? phew! its' hard to believe
christmas is less than 2 weeks away!!!
sarah and ash have been busily preparing for the first christmas in their
new home and as per usual, sarah's been baking lots of delicious goodies
(yumm yumm!). speaking of great food, i finally have the now-confirmed
release date of sarah's cookbook! march 12th 1999 (more details soon to
come).

some of you may or may not have heard sarah's song "i will remember you" in
an at&t advertisement. just fyi: at&t is donating a percentage of every
"extra minute" for the next month to the red cross, for the relief efforts
surrounding hurricane mitch in central america, which is why sarah agreed
to let them use her song (for free).  she will also be appearing at a
benefit show in los angeles next week in support of "doctors without
borders" for the same relief effort in central america. stay tuned to our
web site for more info (www.sarahmclachlan.com).

in other news, the brand new  ** sarah mclachlan video compilation
1989-1998: dvd ** was recently released (it's so amazing! isn't technology
grand?)
this updated collection of all of sarah's videos is only coming out on dvd.
there are no plans to release a vhs equivalent. this dvd is only available
in canadian music retail stores and through nettwerk's own mailorder dpt.

the track listing for this video collection dvd is as follows:

        vox (canadian version)
        steaming
        ben's song
        vox (u.s. version)
        the path of thorns (terms)
        into the fire
        drawn to the rhythm
        possession (canadian version)
        hold on
        good enough
        possession (u.s. version)
        i will remember you
        building a mystery
        sweet surrender
        adia

you can pre-order the dvd through our web site by clicking on the sarah
video collection dvd as it's listed on the nettwerk web site at
http://www.nettweb.com  under new releases. you can't miss it. be sure to
check it out, as you can also check out sound files, read lyrics and view
quicktime video clips of some of the videos.

what the heck is a dvd, you ask? here's a little info:
dvd, as a format, is new. hundreds of stores carry them. it produces simply
amazing picture and audio quality. the dvd is the exact same size as a
regular audio cd...the picture? basically way clearer (more lines of
resolution) than you would ever get from a vhs cassette. audio? better than
a  cd!
for more info on dvd's,  check out this web site:
http://www.dvdinsider.com

take care everyone and have a warm & fuzzy weekend ;)

i must agree, it does really bother me that time still does their man of
the year thing.  i mean, why can't they do a person of the year or
something, why can't it include womyn?

however, i do think that matthew shepard would be perfect for that honor.
as long as time keeps its sexist ways, i can only hope that they would
chose someone more controversial and progressive than the pope.  i think
that if matthew does get chosen that it will shed a lot of new light on
the issues of lesbian, gay, and bisexual rights.

just my two francs on the issue...

yup.   complacent.  but there are still massive inequities!  some people
just look at me in shock and disbelief when i bring up the subject of
feminism etc.   as if to say "what problem?  we're eqaual now".  yeah
right.  just look at the pay rate discrimination - women still are
grossly underpaid in comparison to men - what is it - women get
something like .70 cents to each dollar a man makes.  i get so
frustrated and upset by this whole thing, it's hard to even participate
in this conversation.  eradicate complacency!

ok...
please don't flame me if at all possible. an innocent question. and i
don't mean to bring up a bad conversation or start anything big and
upsetting for anyone, but amy smokes on occasion, correct? or so she is
said to. so i just heard that john cougar mellancamp smokes 5, yes: 5!!!
packs of cigarettes a day. he has even had a heart attack because of it,
even though he didn't know he was having one. so my question is, do people
really think that smoking automatically causes one to be banned from any
sort of great singing ability? i mean, i don't know about you guys, but
john cougar mellancamp's voice is definitely something to be reckoned
with.
sorry. it was just racing through my head and needed to come out.
katy :)

fabulair...

join us on this short flight of fancy as we re-design the first airline
for gay men, lesbians, and anyone else lucky enough to get a seat.

welcome aboard!

your tickets will arrive in a sleek diesel leather ticket folio. your
seat assignment (only aisle or window, no middle) is pre-reserved and your
inflight menu is included because we know how long it takes some of you
to make up your minds, especially with a menu as fabulous as ours.

when you arrive at the airport, you'll recognize our terminal
immediately. richard sabala did the lights. susan morabito did the music.
thierry mugler did the departure lounge. outside, we have a specially
commissioned sculpture of amelia earhart and ellen degeneres as "traveling
companions."

our sky caps, muscles bulging under their raymond dragon uniforms, will
check your luggage. we allow five pieces, not two, and no extra charge
for golf clubs, ladies.

you know you've arrived:
stroll through our luxurious terminal to your gate. follow the red velvet
roping up to the plane door. the gate agent will take your ticket and
give you your wristband boarding pass. keep it on - it's color-coded to
indicate whether you're aggressively single, possibly available, or married.

on board we have young, tall, thin, gorgeous stewardesses dressed by chanel
and trained by rupaul - they're gonna work! butch has no place in our
aisles.
if butch is what you're after, lust after our baggage handlers. hired from
colt and falcon studios, they just can't seem to keep their shirts on.

our cockpit crew? all gay men and lesbians discharged from the military.

if there's anything we can do...

fabulair is bringing style back to air travel. settle into your seat.
what do you notice? it's comfortable. and it matches your outfit.

overhead, you'll find reading lights plus tanning lights. the black
leather seats smell as good as they feel. you can't wait to fasten your
seatbelt low and tight against your waist. aaah. you're ready for takeoff.

you'll never see "honey, i blew up the kids" on fabulair. we only show
movies starring bette davis, joan crawford, madonna or jody foster.

the airfone at every seat has speed dial for bill clinton, barney frank,
elizabeth birch, tzabaco, international male, and j. crew, for the
non-stop activist and shopaholic.

perhaps you'd like to listen to our specially selected audio
entertainment:
channel 1: kd lang.
channel 2: pet shop boys.
channel 3: the indigo girls.
channel 4: junior's "dancing on air" party mix (a fabulair exclusive).
channel 5: melissa etheridge.
channel 6: nothing but show tunes.

before you know it, your flight will be over. but don't be sad. you've
earned lots of frequent flyer miles, good towards your next trip on
fabulair. we regret that they are blacked out for the black party, white
party, gay pride, folsom street, vizcaya, hotlanta and halloween, but use
them over any of the other holidays.

bonus miles? sure: stay at a gay b&b. get a rainbow card. use community
spirit long distance. take an olivia cruise. subscribe to out & about.
triple miles? just date one of our employees.

too fabulous
our in-flight service is not coach, business or first. it's so fabulous,
we named it fabulous class. it may seem like first class on other airlines,
but we never use those words, because nothing we do is second class. we
recognize however, that many of our passengers are too special and
important, even for fabulous class. for those who require the utmost in
privacy and luxury we have an exclusive cabin that we call too fabulous
class. too fabulous passengers don't need tickets. we know who you are.
our already generous luggage limit is waived for you. at boarding time, come
right to the front of the red roping. even though we have short lines, we
kept the roping because we know you like it.

on board, you'll notice the little touches that make a difference. a full
harness replaces the standard seatbelt. a stewardess for every passenger.
marble bathrooms big enough for two. live entertainment and a personal
video screen with personal video choices. we couldn't improve our
service, so we just added more. massage. manicure. hair styling.
waxing/electrolysis (la flights only). and group psychotherapy in our
upstairs lounge.

we think you'll agree---

it's a fabulous world on fabulair, the world's first all-gay airline!

leslie marmo silko
louise erdrich
and va. woolf is technically in the early 20th century but i think i may throw

yup.   complacent.  but there are still massive inequities!  some people
just look at me in shock and disbelief when i bring up the subject of
feminism etc.   as if to say "what problem?  we're eqaual now".  yeah
right.  just look at the pay rate discrimination - women still are
grossly underpaid in comparison to men - what is it - women get
something like .70 cents to each dollar a man makes.  i get so
frustrated and upset by this whole thing, it's hard to even participate
in this conversation.  eradicate complacency!

elaine >>

i don't know how long this conversation has been going on, and i know i'm a
dweeb for just now jumping in...how rude of me.  but, here's where i integrate
indigo girls political activity into present conversation.

first of all, let me say that i have always believed in affirmative action and
feminism, but there were times during high school and college when i thought
that i was just being brainwashed by fellow feminists.  i was taught well by
them, however, because i learned what feminism really meant.  now, i
experience sexism or some type of difference at work weekly, and i work for
the federal government!  i was even talking to my supervisor at one time, a
guy who is supposed to be of new age culture and open-mindedness...or so he
says he is.  he's got a masters in environmental management from duke uni. and
says he's a pagan and acts so "cool."  he even hit on me at one time while we
were canoeing!  anyway, i told him about a feminist book i was reading.  he
just came right out and said, "chee, you're not a feminist, are you?"  i
turned to him and asked him what he thought feminism meant?  he said he
thought that it meant to pull women up onto a pedestal.  i told him he was
wrong and fixed his perception of what feminism was and probably the
perception of feminists.  it really pisses me off a lot to be working under
someone with so much ignorance.  oh well.  one of these days i'll be working
over him, and i won't waste my money on a degree from duke uni.....it takes
personality and common sense not a penis and a degree from duke.

it does seem, though, that there's a backlask going on.  but, i think i heard
amy ray talking about this one time.  she said what i've heard a lot of
profeminists say:  every cause works in pulsations...like a womb menstrating
or a pulsar star.  feminism might be getting some bad publicity, but it's just
a step back....after and before 2 steps forward....make sense?

theodore-an alternative music sampler-$3
hitchhiker exampler (darden smith, indigo girls, okanes) , $6
stanley, son of theodore: yet another alternative music sampler (pearl
jam, alison moyet, indigo girls, cypress hill, fishbone, poi dog) , $8
take yourself (howard jones, indigo girls, michael stipe, b-52's, kd
land, belinda carlisle, pretenders, raw youth, goosebumps),  $12

what i need to know is.....are these prices good?  they do have multiple
copies of some...should i be picking up extras?

thanks for the input gang!

okay, y'all.  is it getting a little boring around here or is it just me?

new threads, and my 2 cents:

1) if your fab fave ig song were an animal, what would it be, and why?

strange fire, a horse, because i can see the power of the thing running
along the ocean shore kicking up water and sand to the rhythm of amy's
guitar.

2) if amy and emily were family relatives, who would they be?

oh, this is so solopsistic.  amy would have to be me, because i'm like the
only non-conformist in my whole family ("kind of an independent attitude)
with even the tiniest sense of political activism.  emily would have to be
my niece, kind of shy, but precisely expressive, and always exactly right
whenever she does actually open her mouth.  she's 6.  (not that emily never
opens her mouth, just that she's always just exactly right, ya know?)

3) i'm running thin, here, but to what film do you think already existing a
and e songs make the best soundtrack?

oh, this one's harder than i thought.  thelma and louise, or basketball
diaries.

come on, people, let's liven things up!

last time i saw them in bethlehem in september, it was their last show.  i
didn't believe them, knowing they hit the colleges pretty regularly, but
they did say they were going to be working on a new album.  i think amy
said due out in january or february.  i don't expect to see much ig
activity till after the new year, they were pretty quiet last year at this
time also.

tanner, so she must be a real person!

well, matt shepard was winning as of yesterday, but currently, he is
losing to mick foley, so if you haven't voted (or if you can go around a
computer lab & vote a lot), go do it.
let matt live on as much as possible.

okay, intimate strangers, i was flipping through the latest pulse, the
december 1998 issue(issue #177), (a magazine put out by tower records, a
u.s. and international music store) and i just want to send a big
shout-out to laura lombardi of portland, oregon (if she subscribes to
the list).

her desert island discs are:
1. rubber soul--the beatles.
2. setting sons--the jam.
3. endless summer--the beach boys.
4. document--r.e.m.
5. rocket to russia--the ramones.
6. quintessential--billie holiday.
7. beach samba--astrud gilberto.
8. sound affects--the jam.
9. pussy whipped--bikini kill.
10. nomads, indians, saints--indigo girls.

so, a question for all the nis fans: why?

a problem with becoming obsessed with ig over one summer is that you get
all the cd's at once, and then don't get to ruminate over them for a
year or two like when they had first come out.

re: new threads

>1) if your fab fave ig song were an animal, what would it be, and why?
if mystery was an animal?  a sly fox perhaps, or a shy turtle.  i don't
know.

>2) if amy and emily were family relatives, who would they be?
amy would most likely be my cousin angel or his sister amy--both are
kind of dark, do their own thing, and very intelligent and talented,
though, not necessarily in music.  my cousin cely jane is emily--the
eternal optimist and such a kind soul.

>3) i'm running thin, here, but to what film do you think already
existing a and e songs make the best soundtrack?
umm, i am not qualified to make this call, so i won't.

diane
