okay y'all,
i went to see the movie, you've got mail today (i was very
dissatisfied with the ending) but in one of meg ryan's e mails to tom hanks,
she is talking about being lonely and missing her mother at christmas.  guess
what song she talks about!   river!!!  yes, our very own river, written by
joni mitchell and covered by emily!  before she even said anything about joni
or the song, she started quoting it.  after she said, "it's coming on
christmas," my friend sitting next to me was ready to slap me because i let
out this squeal!  one line and i knew the whole song was coming!  no mention
of emily, but they brought up joni several times later in the movie.

ra
who is still laughing over jillian running off with the nanny.

first of all, i love that statement...notice above.

second of all, who is going to eddie's on the 26th and the 27th???????
if you are....if you are,,,,,,if you are, look out for me b/c i'm meeting a
friend there (a guy.... and yes, it's a date, jilly silly:)).  i'm thinking
about getting there early....like around 4pm to get a number while my friend
is at work, but i don't want to wait by myself  a..n..d >>>i don't want to be
in the presence of good folks like y'allselves and be sooooooooo distant.

can you tell i'm excited?  i'm a-going to have a hootin' good ole time...even
if with a sort-of-ex-boyfriend.  y'all folks, i haven't been this psyched
since i got my job out here in texas!!!!!!!!!!!!!  and now i'm going home for
the holidays...good ole sweet georgia.  i'm a dweed, i know.  but, aren't you
glad for me?  i wonder if i should stay around for the open mic night on the
28th...and plug the listee's tape by shelley...and how is that going, ms.
shelley miller?

but, you know it, and i know it, they know and everybody knows it....that
being on-line and being a subscriber to an e-mail list is about as dorky as i
want to be right now...it might not be a good idea to profess my presence on
this list.  i mean, i mean, i mean, i mean i'm sittin' there on the bench (oh,
sorry..i got kind of lost in arlo guthrie world)...i mean, really:  who knows
at least one person (a friend or not) who has said that being on-line and
using e-mail is the devil's tool?  it is dorky (but it's pro-environment!), so
i won't plug the list, i guess.

third of all, i'm starting to really dig the country-western scene.  anybody
else?  if indigo girls do indeed record a cd that's pure folksy and a little
country, wouldn't that just hit the nail on the head of fads?  i mean, it's a
fad lately, i think....to dig country-western...oh, perhaps it's me.  i don't
know, but i see it here in texas (a place that's always been into country-
western, i guess).

forth of all, did i tell y'all that i'm going to eddie's on the 26th (shawn
mullins) and the 27th (amy and danielle and i think michelle)?  maybe i'll
record it for y'all....or maybe not!!!!!!!  ha ha ha ha ha!  (e-mail me if you
really want to have a tape of it sent to you)

over and out,

more info on the new daemon multimedia big bang sampler!!

i just thought i would mention that this is a limited edition (meaning they
didn't make that many!) so you may want to order it soon.   it's $6.00 and
it's on the daemon web site (http://monsterbit.com/daemon/)

if you get it, and love it, you should let them know - they would appreciate
the feedback!

there *is* igc on this cdrom, in the multimedia portion.   there is video
footage from jesus christ superstar, and a new mongrels video, shot in the
studio as they were recording the cd.    there are also videos for the various
artists featured, as well as sound clips and reviews.   artists featured
include:  three finger cowboy, danielle howle & the tantrums, indigenous,
terri binion, belloluna, jesus christ superstar, the rock*a*teens, new
mongrels, reversing hour and lift.

and if for some reason, you can't play the multimedia section of the cd-rom,
the collection of music put together on the sampler is great too!   the very
best of daemon.  two great things for the price of one =)   and all for $6.00.

=)

not country-western per se, but i'm am definitely getting into what's being
dubbed alt.country or roots music or americana... lucinda williams, lyle
lovett, and randy scruggs (check out the guest list on his cd!
<http://www.wbr.com/nashville/randyscruggs/cmp/album.html> are  among my
top 10 cds of the year.  i still think k.d. lang's country cds are her best
work.  i'm a long-time fan of roseanne cash.  (mary-chapin carpenter has a
few songs i like but in general i like a little more folk or rock or jazz
in the mix).  the jayhawks, uncle tupelo, son volt, and wilco are favorites
which are more rock-country than country-rock.

btw, cd universe has an american page at
<http://www.cduniverse.com/asp/americana.asp>

austin has some terrific artists of that genre (anna egge is doing pretty
well thanks to fellow austin resident shawn colvin), i suspect a lot of it
is your location, but there's no doubt that country music which doesn't get
played on country radio stations is gaining fans.

i would definitely be thrilled to hear more songs like "gone again" on the
next ig cd, it's still my favorite of the new songs.

not really... time's award is never a judgement on the person, but rather
an acknowledgement that they played a major role in the world, for better
or worse.  i don't think you can dispute that they played the major roles
in the news story of the year.

hello!

my best friend gave me the coolest birthday card:

front: "on your birthday you can either be the hammer, or the nail"
inside: "you can either get hammered, or nailed!"

yeah, it's dumb, but she couldn't resist the ig reference. personally, i'm
impressed she got that one!

anyhow, it's been quite the week... i'm on yucky meds, and the doctor's
news wasn't the greatest...wasn't the worst either...alright, i'll quit
complaining...

i'm gonna have a bunch of t-shirt left over, so if you want one, email me.
for those already on the waiting list, you *will* get a shirt - i promise!
i will be emailing everyone individually after new year's when i get back
home...

if i was to guess...when an oyster gets a grain of sand inside of itself, it is
an irritant.  the oyster secreets (i can't spell lol) pearl juice (okay, don't

born after many years of pain.

she's very unique and "hell among the yearlings" is a very
stripped-down, mountain-music-tinged collection.  her other album,

hello friends!

in the sprite of the season, what would you give/wish for amy and emily for
the holidays?

amy- i would wish for her the ability to relax. i have this feeling she is not
one to just take a few weeks and just do nothing. her gift would be the
illustrated alchemist: a fable about following your dream by paulo coelho.
7943417-9185434)

emily- my wish is for her to find a success in her restaurant ... that she
earns respect for putting together a wonderful product, not just because
people stop to look at her tending bar. and my gift would be sensible shoes
for her to schlep around watershed and for after work one of those foot bath
machines as well as a cozy pair of slippers.

and to all of you fellow list members, i wish for you good food, good friends,
and good music.  please enjoy this holiday weekend!

normally i don't jump onto threads like this, but i heard a song today
and it just screamed to me for ig to do a cover.  it's zucchero's "if not
tonight."  i can just feel amy's penetrating voice singing, "underneath
the stars / beneath a hangnail moon / sinking down into the sea / it's
not the time."  and emily's voice carrying us to the angels on the
chorus, "yeah yeah eee...if not tonight / will there ever be another
night ..... for there will never be a night if not tonight."  i think
that would be an exceptional song for them.

cheers,
l'sly

hey y'all!

merry christmas!  and happy belated solstice and hanakuah!

a few days ago, someone posted about alternative country music.  well,
she's not exactly country, but she has a slight twang -- carrie newcomer!
oh, i love her music so much (right jill and anna?).  actuallly, recently
she has become one of my 3 faves (ig, dar, and carrie), so i would highly
reccommend her.

as far as my holiday plans go -- be at home!  i haven't been home
(chicago) since august since i was in paris for thanksgiving and colorado
for some random break and i probably won't be at home next christmas since
i'll be in japan.  so it is soooooooo nice finally seeing my family and
best friend again!  so, ummm...merry christmas (it is christmas already in
ohio and it's about to be christmas here in chicago, and it's been
christmas for a few hours over in france and spain (where i have good
friends) so merry christmas to everyone!)

love,
karen :-)

ps- my cousin sent me an article about emily's new restaurant.  she lives
in atlanta and i was supposed to go see her this break, but i want/need to
be at home!!!  :-)

i always linked it in my mind to the line, "how much have you
grown?"...the "pearls" being a grandmotherly sort wearing pearls,
pinching your cheek on that once a year trek to her house saying "oh,
look how much you've grown!" (which would, at least for me, make me
cringe and turn the other way)

woo-hoo!  i can't believe i didn't share this earlier, but my mom, when
i asked her a couple weeks ago what she'd really like for christmas,
said that she missed borrowing my cd's and wanted some of the music i
listened to!  so this morning, under the tree, she had the girls, and
carrie newcomer, and shawn colvin!  another convert!

peace and warmth to you all,

just a post-xmas reminder:

doing anything next week?

cat power will be having a few shows.  please do go.
1/2 (sat) -new york - bowery ballroom
1/3 (sun)- seattle wa - crocodile
1/4 (mon)- san francisco - bottom of the hill

now maybe you're asking youself, *why* should i go?  just because some
dumb girl tells me to go?  oh nooo. no no no.  you, darling listee,
should go because:
a) chan marshall is really, *really* cute
b) she's from atlanta, and
c) has played the little five points circuit
d) her stuff is very personal, acoustic mellow stuff which i think you'd
like;
e) she's on a little indie label, so the shows are gonna be cheap.
(like under 10 bucks).
f) you can boot the shows for *me*! hee.
g) you know you want to go
h) you know i want you to go
i) the gods will smile upon you.  i bet chan will too.

this chicky is so amazing, can i repeat that?  she's amazing.  did you
know she wrote a whole album in one night?  she couldn't sleep and sat
up in bed and grabbed her guitar and these songs just flowed out of her.
and then a bit later, she was in australia and got a couple friends of
hers to play a little drum, a little flute, whatnot, to back her up. and
voila, she had her album moon pix (thanks to mel who sent me the article
where i got all this info from).  the poor little girl, she had such bad
stagefright, she used to perform with her back to the audience, or
standing sideways, she couldn't look at the people out there.  just raw
and emotional and scared as hell.  cute little thing.
folks, i urge you, nay, beg you, to go to
http://www.matador.recs.com/bios/bio_catpower.html#sound
and listen to "moonshiner" and then "say".  they're admittedly rather
sad, her other stuff isn't so dragging-the-river-y.  her sound reminds
me of rose polenzani.  i don't think they put her best stuff on that
site, but that's my own headtrip. (i'd advise waiting until later to
listen to "crossbones style," cause that's the single solitary song on
the album that is not all acoustic-y, and one fainthearted listee
listened to it and just about peed her folkie bell-bottomed hemp
pants)(which, i concede, may not be what she was wearing at the time,
but is what i would assume uber-folkies wear).
if you love *music*, you will dig this stuff.
if you love *ig only*, this will be a little different.  it's acoustic,
but not folk.  but i think you can take it on.  be brave.  it is sooo
nice.

ho ho oh.
jill

psychiatrists condemn treatment to convert gays
  december 12, 1998
web posted at: 1:50 a.m. edt (0550 gmt)

denver (ap) -- the american psychiatric association's board voted
unanimously friday to reject therapy aimed solely at turning gays into
heterosexuals, saying it can cause depression, anxiety and
self-destructive
   behavior.

"all the evidence would indicate this is the way people are born. we
treat
disease, not the way people are," said dr. nada stotland, head of the
association's joint committee on public affairs.

"the very existence of therapy that is supposed to change people's
sexuality, even for people who don't take it, is harmful because it
implies
that they have a disease," said stotland, of rush medical college in
chicago. "there is evidence that the belief itself can trigger
depression
   and anxiety."

the american psychological association made a similar decision last
year.

gay activists applauded the decision. proponents of converting gays said
the
decision could deny patients the treatment they want.

some fundamentalist christian religious groups attempt to persuade
homosexuals to undergo treatment, sometimes called "reparative therapy,"
to
   convert to heterosexuality.

focus on the family, the family research council and the christian
coalition
began a national advertising campaign just before the killing of matthew
   shepard urging gays to convert.

shepard, a 21-year-old gay university of wyoming student, died october
12
after a severe beating in laramie, wyoming police believe he was attacked
in
   part because he was gay.

asked whether efforts to convert gays could result in attacks like the
killing of shepard, stotland said spreading the idea that homosexuality
is a
disease or evil could make people "feel less inhibited about beating up
gays, or not giving them jobs."

stotland said during the psychiatric group's quarterly meeting that there
is
no evidence that sexual orientation can be changed.

john paulk, a specialist on homosexuality and gender for the colorado
springs-based focus on the family, disagreed. he said there is no
evidence
   that homosexuality is "biologically predetermined."

"this makes it more difficult for clients who want to be treated for
unwanted homosexuality," paulk said. "furthermore no scientific study
has
given conclusive evidence that homosexuality cannot be successfully
   treated."

david smith, chief strategist for the human rights campaign, said, "we
applaud ... the condemnation of this thoroughly discredited practice
that
causes great harm to people who are gay but not yet comfortable with
their
   sexual orientation."

thanks to everyone who sent me their where were you stories:-))!

i haven't had the time to update my ig pages lately, so your stories

i will do a huge bunch of website updating soon though, when i have
my new bigger, better, faster, cooler pc;-) set up and running.
so, i will post again when all of your contributions are uploaded.
thx again for participating:). and to everyone who has no idea what
this post is all about: the where were you thread is like the island

telling their story of getting into ig's music, how their
obsession/passion for ig began, either way back when or just the
other day, doesn't matter:).

every story that gets posted to the list will end up on my page (if
you for some reason don't want your story up there, let me know)you
can also submit your stories directly via the webpage or just mail

oh and merry x-mas all:))!!

hey,
i got a few of my boots from there...and they aren't official
copies...they're on gold discs, with fake inserts as well. i wouldn't spend
too much money on stuff from there...unless you're satisfied with
unofficial boots. they kind of make me mad 'cause they make "bootlegs of
bootlegs" and sell them. just wanted to let ya know.

well, let's see.  i've posted this before, but it's been a few years.

it was late 1991.  i was at the fabulous raspberry records in slc, utah,
looking for a pat benatar (rock bitch extraordinaire) album, and on my way
out, i glanced through the (gasp!) bargain bin.  there was the self-titled.
i thought to myself, hmm.  i like that closer to fine song i hear on the
radio, it's only a few bucks, and pat's on sale, so what the hell, i'll give
it a shot.  i went home, one listen to "secure yourself," and i was hooked.
i went back the next day and bought sf and nis.  i'm proud to say i
purchased rop, so, and sots on the very day they were released.  i've been
somewhat of a freak since then...  many of my friends mock me, they don't
understand.  intimate strangers.  whatever.

i've also been on the list off and on since fall of 1995!  three years and
counting.  member those days of moo and grapenuts, kids?  many months before
our fall from grace of late...  since then i've traded for over 120
bootlegs, started several newbies on their quest for boots, booted one show
myself (i suck at it, sorry,) and gotten a hold of many rare releases.  not
to mention meeting several fab folks and turning my ig friendly friends on
to the list!  thanks y'all.  i'm getting all teary...

cheers!

it was the summer of '96.  i was 14 years old, and had finally made it to
upper senior line from that first fateful year on junior line. (see, can you
sense the drama?)  i was sort of depressed, and rest hour presented me with an
entire hour to wallow in self-doubt.  so there i was, flipping through my cds,
trying to find something to listen to.  suddenly, i didn't want to hear
nirvana.  i didn't want hole.  i was sick of pearl jam.  so i settled on the
boys on the side sndtrk.  however, i kept skipping over all the tracks --
until i hit power o' two.  i knew what i had to do.
i asked to go to the bathroom, and essentially sprinted over to sub-senior
line.  i burst in to cabin five, asked my friend esra (the counselor) if i
could borrow her indigo girls tape, and then ran with it back to my cabin.
three weeks later, i returned home.  within 24 hours, i could play closer to
fine on the guitar.  within 48, i owned my own copy of ig, and also sprung for
rop.  i joined this list, got some boots . . .
aw well, the rest is history! =)

hey all.  hope your holidays are going fine.

last night's writer's night shows were great.  both were better than the
ones back in november, especially the second show.  both shows sold out
but the demand for shawn mullins the night before was apparently much
greater (200 people lined up outside who couldn't get in).

this time it was only three performers (amy, danielle howle and michelle
malone) instead of two, so we got more songs out of each one: 6 rounds
each in the first show, and maybe 6 each in the second show, but they
broke form at one point (see below).

i didn't specific write down all the songs that michelle and danielle
did (maybe somebody else can help out with that).  michelle did almost
all new stuff.  one song called "avalon" she did in both shows.  it
seemed to be about watching tv and how she missed an old tv show (soap
opera?) called "avalon".  she did one about her old apartment which was
pretty good.  i generally liked her song selection better in the second
show than in the first show.

danielle was her usual funny, quirky self.  she was talking about her
christmas and how she has these relatives that she only sees once a year
and she'll tell them about something new she's thinking about doing
(turning a barn into a guest house, starting up bee-keeping) and they'll
say, "that sounds good.  i think i'll do that, too" and she'd get mad
that they were just copying her and couldn't think of things on their
own.  then she did some christmas song that was funny enough but
basically seemed to be slamming people who hardly get to see her and
were only trying to come up with ways to spend time with her.

the difference between these three artists was very apparent.  all three
have excellent voices and michelle's a great guitarist.  but it's the
lyrics that separate them.  michelle's songs were kind of about mundane
topics and generic love/relationship issues.  danielle's songs are all
funny -- she even did a song that had the line "everything i do is to
make you laugh" -- and even if the lyrics aren't specifically funny, her
delivery is (the way she pauses and her use of rhythm).  neither
danielle or michelle write in a style that does justice to their voices,
though.  i always want to hear danielle do a whole show of country
covers just to showcase how full her voice is.  meanwhile, amy's songs
are about death row inmates, radiation sickness, sexual identity, etc.
she's in another class from them as far as her subject matter, and her
songs and delivery are simple enough to display her voice really well
also.

so in the first show, amy did these songs:

gone again
faye tucker - sounded great.  i'd only heard this live once, back at
music midtown.  it was much better in this intimate setting.
oh, osalyn (sp?) - i really like this one a lot.  it's maybe the most
purely "folk" song she's written.
little darling - outstanding
go
sister - still the best of the new stuff in my book.  i just love the
slow descend into the chorus.

for the second (21 & over) show, the crowd was quite a bit noisier
during the whole set.  the first crowd was wonderfully quiet throughout,
which helped the delivery of the songs.  for the second show, there was
lots of talking (especially whenever danielle was up) which was the only
the downside.  michelle did one song in particular that was excellent
but i can't remember the title.  danielle went into this riff about
eating slim jims which was funny enough but she wouldn't let go of it
until she made her point (which i forget).

amy's songs for the second set were:

gone again
the boys just laugh - i could've sworn that ... oh, never mind.
oh, osalyn - michelle did a very nice bottom guitar part on this one
that i hope makes it onto the recorded version.
go - amy improvised a new ending with it.  (speaking of improvising
endings, whatever happened to chris mcguire?  i sure do miss being able
to see her perform.)
?me and my baby? - this was a new song i've never heard or heard tell
of.  it was a very tender description of living with somebody ("i watch
you comb your hair in the mirror").  it was one of those personal songs
that amy sings real slow and quiet.  it got to her so much that she
stopped in the middle of it and said, "i can't get through that."  i've
never seen her do that before.  it was pretty stunning.  she switched
and said "let's do a breakup song instead" and went into:
moment of forgiveness
at this point, they broke the round robin format.  i think stopping in
the middle of that song threw amy.  she said, "let's just make up a
song" and she went into a song that clearly wasn't made up on the spot
but was maybe unfnished:
?i've been sleeping on the mountain top/have you been lonely? - i'd
never heard this one, either.  it was very upbeat and sounded pretty
good, actually.  it's part of this new pure folky style she's developing
(gone again, oh osalyn, and even parts of go).  she's got the older
"pure amy" murky style still (sister, the boys just laugh, the older
bits of go).  the new style may be associated with stuff she writes on
the mandolin.
at this point, there was a wonderful surprise special guest: kristen
hall.  i wasn't ever all that much of a fan of hers when she was around
all the time, but now that she's moved away to los angeles, it was
really quite a treat to see her perform.  she led them (all together)
on:
let it rain and then kristen and michelle did a great version of:
?head in the clouds/long way down? - (sorry, i don't know the names of
her songs.)  then kristen went back into the audience and they did
another round of songs.  amy did:
sister
and they all (with kristen back up on stage and leading them) closed
with:
southern man

really an outstanding night of music, especially with the energy in the
room when kristen came on stage.

i hung around and spoke to amy briefly.  i asked her, with all the new
material (she did 10 different post-shaming songs on the night), when
they'd be recording again.  she actually gave me a specific answer, but
i wasn't paying attention.  (i was too busy trying to remember how to
breathe.  i've spoken to her lots of times over the years but it's been
a while and i'm still quite nervous in her presence.)  she did say that
both she _and_emily_ had lots of new songs (so there goes our "writer's
block" interpretation of "soon be to nothing"), so much so that they
might have to do a double album.

great night.

later,

ron

ok, let's start with the basics. (gay activists to the rescue!)  there are
three aspects of sexuality: orientation, identity and behavior.

orientation is what you are.  it's the people you like.  if you like either
sex, you are gay or straight, if you like both, you are bisexual.  this is
not changeable.  trust me.  as a lesbian, i know.  why would anyone choose
to be hated by their parents, friends, peers and church leaders?  why would
anyone choose to be something they can be fired from a job for?  why would
they choose to not be able to marry the person they love?

identity is how you identify.  i have a friend for example, who identifies
as a lesbian even though she has told me that she is probably bisexual with
a strong leaning towards women.  i myself would probably more accurately
identify as bi with a strong leaning towards lesbianism, as i have found
several guys sexually attractive, but since the women have by far
outnumbered the men, and i have felt no emotional attraction whatsoever
towards any guy, i just call myself a lesbian.

behavior is what you do.  a lesbian could get married, have sex with her
husband and have tons of kids, would this stop her from being a lesbian?
no.  at heart, her attraction toward women would remain.  she would always
feel a void in her life.

is your sexuality *just* in your head?

it is very possible (and there had been some scientific evidence that
suggests) that your brain controls aspects of your sexuality.  is it  *just*
in your head?  i seroiusly doubt it.

can you choose your sexuality?

no.  why would anybody choose to be so hated?

julie

hi kids-

here's my 2 cents on the "sexuality:  born or chosen" debate.  firstly, my
own experience is that i was not born gay.  i did not grow up gay.  i did
not grow up with a sense of myself as somehow sexually "different" from
other people.  neither, however, was i "made" gay.  it is not the result of
one or a series of traumatic experiences that made me into a lesbian.  i do,
however, feel as though i chose to be gay.  it happens to be the case that
the persons with whom i experience intimacy have historically been women,
and it happens to be the case that i enjoy sleeping solely with persons with
whom i experience itimacy.

it is the case that i experience certain kinds of hatred, homophobia,
whatever because i have chosen to be gay, to identify as a lesbian, and to
have sexual experiences with women.  but regardless, i experience it as a
choice.

otoh, i do understand quite well that many people feel that they were "born"
gay, have a sense of a historical gay identity (i.e. knew they were gay when
they were, like, 5), and did not choose to be gay.  many people i know feel
as though they were "born" gay, and they had no say in it whatsoever.
that's their experience, it's absolutely valid, and absolutely true.

but more to the point, i think that as long as gay politics focuses so much
on the "born/chosen" debate, we won't get anywhere at all.  i frankly don't
understand why it matters why we are gay.  if we're gay because of biology,
so what?  if we're gay because we made a choice, so what?  if we're gay
because we had traumatic experiences as a child, so what?  all three of
those reasons are equally valid reasons to be gay, and as long as we insist
that we are "born" gay, we invalidate the experiences of those not "born"
gay, and excise them from our identity, and our movement.  it's as if
"chosen" homosexuals are not "real" homosexuals, and i think it posits a
real us/them divide.

secondly, what does it matter if homosexuals can or cannot change their
orientation and/or identification and/or sexual behavior?  the whole point
of the movement is that it's okay to be gay.  if we insist we were "born"
with it, that indicates that it's some kind of biological fact of our lives,
which for some it is, but that for whatever reason, "chosing" to be gay is
somehow less valid.  my point is that as i see it, the whole debate is a
moot one.  it's okay to be gay for *whatever* reason, because you were born
that way, because you were raped as a child, because you happen to
experience intimacy with persons of the same gender, because your mother is
gay and you like her sense of fashion, because your ex-boyfriend was
straight and he was an asshole, because you're a radical lesbian separatist
feminism.  the fact of getting to or coming to gayness isn't the issue,
here.  in my opinion, it's origins matter much less than the fact of it's
reality as an experience, as a way to be in the world.  the point of the
movement, i think, is that it's okay to be gay or bi or omni or whatever, no
matter how you got there.  i wonder if the persistence of concern about
origins isn't counterproductive...

man, i can ramble on, can't i??  if you have responses, please use private
email.

everyone has their own opinion on this subject, so you have to decide for

-----------------------------------------

you make a good argument.  i think it matters not that people see
same sex orientation as biology or a choice, but ultimately as something
that is not undesireable.  unfortunately, the "choice" argument is so
very often used against the gay community to justify homophobic
irrationalities, i.e. if you choose to be gay, then you can choose not
to be gay etc. etc. and all the rest of that anti-gay crap - i hate you
because you "choose" to be something different - you can certainly do
something about it.  change that "gay" behavior and conform, dammit!  be
like all the rest of us "non-gay" people!  otherwise, suffer the
consequences. yadda yadda yadda.

but i think i know what you are saying - i think you're asking why
should people harbor ill feelings toward you because of your
differences?  i don't know why.  because some people are assholes?

but i'm getting off subject, aren't i?

this great show was back in the early 90's.  it was set in post w.w.ii
baltimore, and i think it was produced by the folks who make homicide.  it was
not a soap really, just a good clean prime-time drama.

it was a great show ... very funny and very well acted.

well here's my lil theory...call it a jenism if you must :)
i am female and have absolutely no attraction to the male gender...ever since
i was little my mother and father always said that i followed lil grrls around
and always tried to impress them while on the other hand...i was a huge
tomboy...i had a crush on punky brewster..i never played with dolls...always
put them on the shelf....as i grew older i was finding that i was attracted to
one of my good female friends (who still confuses me to this day) and that my
best friend was a boy (greg and he's such a sweety ) i tell greg that he's
everything i would want in a woman as far as characteristics go...but i am not
attracted to him...now if this is all *just* in my head--tell me...where does
a five year old get these ideas...i was never exposed to lesbianism until my
teenage years when i went out to find out more stuff and information on my
"culture"/who i am---

so here i am--at 18--almost 19 years of age....i have an awesome relationship
with a woman---and i still have greg as my best friend...he admitted his crush
on me, but understood when i explained all of this to him using role
reversal...i have never been attracted physically to any man...that is where
everything is separated as far as "sexuality" goes...it's where the emotional
& mental & characteristical attraction ends and the physical attraction
begins--

that's my lil shipeel :)

later

ok,
i will try to address this.....
now myself, i do identify myself as a lesbian, but i do not feel in
anyway that it was a choice that i made...i spent a lot of time in high
school wondering why i didn't like boys the way that my friends seemed
to....and instead of having a supportive environment to explore these
feelings i  was stuck in eastern kentucky with no access to the information
that is available to the teens of today.  so, i pushed those feelings down
inside of myself and tried to fit in.....it took me years and several very
disappointing relationships to finally discover that i was normal for not
enjoying being with men.
after i began this journey of self discovery, i found a happy, wonderful
person just waiting to be set free....i look back on it now and can see
myself being jealous over my "best" friends doing things with other people
and can remember feeling sexually attracted to some of them as well....the
only thing was i didn't know what it meant back then to even be sexually
attracted to someone....so, in short, i don't feel that i decided to be gay,
it wasn't that i didn't find the right man, i just prefer to spend my life
with a woman.   i was born this way and will be this way until i die....i
hope this answers your question.....
also, just a silly question, but why is it that two women being together
is more acceptable than two men in our society??? i know it is a
generalization, but it does seem to be the more accepted form of
homosexuality....any comments or question??? please email me privately i
have wasted enough space on the list with this answer, but i felt the need
to put in my two cents worth.

sorry to do this again but i have to add this to the discussion.....
my best friend and my only confidant during my coming out period, once said
this to me and i think that it goes for more than just sexuality....
"you have to be able to sit down in front of a mirror and take a look at
yourself, and say 'i am gay' or i am straight' or 'i am bi-sexual' what ever
you identify with and be comfortable with that and be comfortable with
yourself"   i think this is what it all boils down to.....  when you learn
to love yourself......sound familiar?????

hi,
well i just wanted to add my two cents to the question is it more acceptable
in our society for two women to be together over two men.  i would have to say
that i think this is true.  i think part of it is that well, women are just
cooler so wouldn't it make more sense for a guy to be with a women.
