article as appears in the australian, friday february 20, 1998.

songwriting genius delivers duo so close to fine

amy ray doesn't like "oooooos". emily saliers does. when the two better
known as the indigo girls, recorded the song get out the map for their last
album shaming of the sun, the "oooooos" stayed. it was emily's song after all.

"we write separately so by the time we bring (a song) to each other they are
in the form we want them to be in," says ray. "there's no discussion about
changing it."

it may be an unusual way for a duo to work, but it's one that has proved
immensely successful. the two, who met at high school in the suburbs of
atlanta, georgia, have been performing together for 17 years and since the
release of their first record in 1985 have won a grammy award and a large,
loyal fan base.

now embarking on their second tour of australia, they have achieved fame and
critical acclaim with a blend of folk music that combines the deeply
personal and the passionately political, not usually a recipe that makes the
charts.

"we're probably equally politically motivated," says ray, "emily might go
through a phase where she's writing songs that have a political bent and
i'll be writing love songs and then it'll switch."

their political convictions have seen them embrace a number of causes over
the years, from those of native americans to the feminist movement, and they
have dedicated much of their touring time to fundraising and publicising
minority groups.

"when we started our bias was towards community involvement," says ray, "we
would play in benefits and talent shows...homeless shelter benefits or
fund-raisers or rallies."

saliers was performing at such events when she was 14.

the two seem to have an obsession with politics, whether it's championing
the underpriveledged or, more so in salier's case, party politics. "i'm
trying to get emily to start running for office," says ray with a smile.

"we spend an inordinate amount of time in our career talking to each other,
learning about things and reading. so when we do benefits we pretty much
understand what's going on. for me it doesn't matter if we're musicians or
not. it's what we would be doing."

but it's the indigo girls' music that has given them the opportunity to
bring their messages to a wide audience. hit singles such as closer to fine
and the landmark album swamp ophelia have garnered them a faithful following.

"maybe it's the lyrics, i think we're honest, down to earth," says ray of
their lasting appeal. "our live shows are an exchange rather than just a
performance. neil young manages to constantly keep it exciting and change
pace and does things that are sometimes weird, never the same. i like that."

and will they still be performing and championing worthy causes 10 years
down the track?

"we might not be as active touring-wise. we each have other things in life
that we want to explore."

forestry and teaching are ray's goals. salier's are somewhat different.
"learning languages and possibly writing music for film.... and i've always
wanted to work in a bookstore."

indigo girls begin their australian tour at melbourne concert hall tomorrow
and sunday. they play brisbane concert hall on february 24, sydney state
theatre on february 26 and 27, adelaide heaven on march 2, perth concert
hall march 4 and canberra theatre march 6.

hi everyone,

sorry i haven't had time to distribute any news the past couple
of days.  (but i did get to see the first two australian ig
shows in three years!  fantastic stuff, very well received as
you would expect.  i will attempt a concise review over the next
few days.)

to the news:

pollstar (http://www.pollstar.com) has ig listed at the newport
folk festival on august 9, 1998.  for more information about the
festival see http://www.newportfolk.com.  ig haven't been added
to the festival schedule stage yet but many other performers are
already scheduled, such as joan baez, dar williams, the violent
femmes, james taylor and many more.

drum roll, please.

brrrrrrrrrrrrr!

okay, folks, the seattle tapes have all been mailed out to the
branches, so if you'd like a copy of the 1-23-98 concert in seattle, wa (see
the
setlist at the end of this post - everyone who's heard it has said that the
quality is very good), please make arrangements with
the person associated with your birthday month.  jodi is going to be the
australian branch and sandy the canadian branch, but if there are others
outside the us who want the tape, i'm hopeful that you'll be able to come to a
satisfactory arrangement with the person associated with your birthday month.
the only stipulation i have is that *no one* can make a profit or *require* a
trade for these tapes -- anyone should be able to get them by sending blanks
and an sase, though it would be nice to arrange a trade if you can.

here are the seattle boot branches:

branches should use the following addresses for overflow; if you receive more
requests than you can handle (and please take care of at least 10), please
refer those folks to overflow branches as follows:

hi everyone,

it appears that the information i posted yesterday about the
1998 newport folk festival performers (joan baez, dar williams
et al) was actually incorrect.  the schedule on the festival
site (http://www.newportfolk.com) is actually still the 1997
schedule, not the preliminary 1998 festival like i assumed it
was.  apparently the 1998 schedule will be released in april
or early may...

with all due respect to sus <grin>, each individual pbs station in the
country decides when (and in fact whether) to air programming.

for example: in atlanta, "austin city limits" with ig will air at
12midnight est sat night.

so... best advice is to *always* check your local tv listings
(especially for pbs)!

subject: [ig-news] 1200 curfews songbook

hi everyone,

the "1200 curfews" songbook was released a few weeks ago (at last).
i got my copy in the mail yesterday...

isbn: 0-7935-6638-x
publisher: hal leonard corporation
no. pages: 126
contents:
        1. closer to fine
        2. galileo
        3. ghost
        4. i don't wanna know
        5. joking
        6. jonas and ezekial
        7. least complicated
        8. mystery
        9. power of two
        10. pushing the needle too far
        11. strange fire
        12. this train revised
        13. virginia woolf
        14. world falls

this book actually seems to be geared towards guitar players, not
keyboard players like the earlier books.  i'm no guitar player and
i can't read tablature (just regular musical notation), but when
compared to the other books the transcriptions seem much more
complete to me.  they've also written in the vocal harmony parts,
which i think wasn't done in any of the other books except for
"swamp ophelia".  they also seemed to have transcribed the 1200c
versions of the songs, rather than just sprucing up the
transcriptions from the old books.  there are a couple of very
short notes from amy before some of her songs as well, and some
notes from the editors that may or may not be useful for guitar
players, i'm not sure.

just fyi -

subject: [ig-news] ig in last week's sunday telegraph

hey everyone,

i found this in last sunday's the sunday telegraph (sydney
sunday paper).  they must have a time machine because the
date on sunday was only the 22nd and apparently a&e sent in
their answers to these questions on the 26th...

ig also scored a mention in a sarah mclachlan article on the
same page but it's a fairly heinous article so i won't type
it in.

happy happy,
sherlyn

just the fax
the indigo girls do everything together.  emily saliers liked
questions 1-5 while amy ray finished off the fax before their
show at the state theatre on february 26 and 27.

1. describe your perfect sunday.
sunshine, new york times, black coffee, church and a cookout
with my friends.

2. what gets you excited?
change for the better, american football, working with other
inspiring artists, anticipating events.

3. do you ever get tired of all the touring and supporting
causes?
i get tired of being away from home but i never get tired of
supporting causes.

4. have things been changing musically for the band?
we used to be pretty stripped down acoustic folk.  now we're
a bit more experimental with other instruments, electric or
otherwise.

5. what about lyrically?
we're both better lyricists.  i try to be less general and
bleeding heart emotional than i used to be.

6. if you could have one thing, what would it be?
peace of mind.

7. how creative is the studio recording process?
our studio experience is extremely open and creative.

8. have you met any interesting people while touring?
tons - most of the compelling personalities outside of fame
and fortune.  it's usually on the streets or in weird
circumstances that interesting people pop up.

9. what does 1998 hold for the indigo girls?
touring, touring and more touring.

10. what are you doing tonight?
walking around town and seeing what's up - hopefully
meeting some interesting people.
