subject: [ig-news] more on new mongrels

[sherlyn's note: this post was originally sent to the indigo
girls mailing list at netspace.org.  it's the first review
i've seen of the new new mongrels album so i thought i'd
forward it on.]

wow, i can't say enough about big cup of empty, the new mongrels new
release.  you can preview it on the daemon site and i have listened to the
entire cd a few times now.  it is less silly and less lively than not dead
(yet), and there don't seem to be the unusual characters such as the nine
fingered boy and the wingtip sheriff.  but i think the guarantee stands:
"no bad songs."
the igc:  amy sings lead vocals on the first song ("streets of gold"?) and
emily sings lead on the tenth.  amy is featured on the title track as
well. also, michelle sings the eighth song ("you laugh"?).
i don't know the exact names of the songs since i haven't been able to
find a song list.  but both amy's song and emily's are just beautiful.
there is a beatlesque quality about the album, especially on emily's lead
vocal song and on the song right after it (backward music, clarinet
interludes).
and as noted, not dead (yet) is the monthly special at daemon, so go order
them both!!

subject: [ig-news] ig in the texas triangle

hi everybody, i found an article that dedicated a full column to a & e!

it's called "strong female presence felt in glama's 'album' nominations" by
gregg shapiro, the texas triangle (march 5, 1998).

i've reprinted *part* of the article, without permission.  the rest of the
article reviews catie curtis, kd lang, and me'shell ndegeocello.  sorry if
it's already been posted:

"on the glama-nominated shaming of the sun (epic), indigo girls amy ray and
emily saliers demonstrate how far they have come in the past eight years.
like fellow openly gay performers on major labels such as etheridge and lang,
the indigo girls no longer sing to an obscure object of their dual desires.
in the song 'shame on you,' they sing 'come on down to chicano city park/wash
your blues away/the beautiful ladies walk on by/you know i never know what to
say.'

'get out the map,' a song about the way friends tend to scatter themselves all
over the place is extraordinary, as is 'it's alright' (which contains the
lines 'and it's alright if you hate that way/hate me cause i'm different/hate
me cause i'm gay/truth of the matter come around some day').  ray and saleirs
also get background musical support from such well-respected musicians as lisa
germano, michelle malone, and sara lee, to name a few.

punk godmother patti smith (who is enjoying a resurgence in popularity) seems
to have had an impact on the indigo girls.  her spirit is felt on songs such
as 'shed your skin,' 'scooter boys,' and 'cut it out.' and just wait until you
hear the songs 'leeds' (with saliers' stunning piano work), 'hey kind friend,'
and the strings on 'caramia.'  they will undoubtedly renew any jaded
listeners' faith in the power of the ballad."
