i called the msu ticket office this morning. their number is
(601)325-2126

they do not take phone orders. phone tickets go to ticket king
in tupelo ms (601) 841-6528

at this late date, ticket king phone orders will be "will call"... however,
the (nice) lady at the msu ticket office told me that the show was outdoors &
there would be plenty of tix. general admission!

i'm packing up my 11 yr old daughter & heading to starkville tomorrow
morning for *her* 2nd i.g. concert -- she knows the all the words & laughs
when i make her leave out the "bad" ones ;-)

indigo girls in o'dome on tuesday
by bill deyoung, sun entertainment editor

after more than a decade and eight albums, the indigo girls decided to
take things a little differently when recording began for "shaming of the
sun" in 1997.

emily saliers and amy ray, high school buddies from decatur, ga., have
perfected the art of harmony singing over the years, and their
introspective, profoundly poetic lyrics have never failed to disappoint
their legions of devoted fans. the twosome rarely make simple folk records,
though - each album has been a progression of more complex arrangements,
darker subtleties and richer, musicianly rewards for those who probed more
deeply.

"shaming of the sun" restored that part of the challenge that had begun to
wear off for these veteran recording artists.

"in the studio amy and i felt completely free to do exactly what we wanted
to do," saliers told an interviewer last year. "for the first time, we
co-produced; we learned, and wrote on a lot of different instruments; we
weren't afraid to try something much more expansive.

"and i feel good about this record in ways i've never felt about anything
we've done in the past."

the album's 12 tracks are rich and rhythmic, and there are sonic surprises
around every corner, from electric guitars, banjo and hurdy gurdy to
strings and horns to the native american vocal ensemble ulali, which makes
an appearance on ray's electrifying "shed your skin."

like oil and water, saliers and ray run together but are otherwise polar
opposites: while ray's songs tend to be grittier, clenching, more rough 'n'
tumble, saliers' contributions are like literature set to music - her deft
turns of phrase and melody often recall joni mitchell in her "blue" and
"for the roses" phases.

put them together, the two singer/songwriters compliment each other
surprisingly well.

since the beginning, ray and saliers have worked tirelessly, via benefit
shows and recordings, for causes including domestic abuse, gun control,
native american rights and gay rights.

although they're not a couple, both indigo girls are openly gay; they've
been "out" for a decade. from most reports, a large part of their
in-concert audience is of a similar orientation, yet the duo's music is
above stereotypes and has little or nothing to do with gender preference.
their best-known songs - "closer to fine," "hammer and a nail," "joking"
and especially saliers' ephemeral "galileo" - apply to anyone attempting to
untangle the twisted knots of a relationship, or trying to make sense of
the rapidly-spinning world.

"our fans tend to really care about the music, and i think they know we
really care about the music and the shows," saliers said.

"our music is honest and emotional, and i think people can hook into that.
it's a mixture of talking about the darkness of the world and also the hope
that we can survive."

subject: [ig-news] memphis show!!!!!

[sherlyn's note: this message was originally sent to the indigo
girls mailing list at netspace.org.]

hi list,
i don't know if anyone else has posted about the show last
night in memphis; i haven't had time to read my mail.
(we're going to the miss. show tonight!)

danielle howle & the tantrums opened.  they really were
great and she is so funny!  i knew who she was just from the
great woods ppv, but i had never seen her live before.  i enjoyed
their set, to say the least.

the girls weren't very chatty, but it was cold (colder than we all
expected, anyway) and i for one don't hold it against them.
they put on a damn fine show as always.  one cute thing was
in the beginning of leeds, emily messed up & she said, "whoa!
wrong note!!"  then she broke into the first couple of bars of
chopsticks.  it was very cute.

i copied down the setlist at the beginning of each song, so what i'm
reporting to you is exactly the order in which it happened.
highlights (for me, anyway) were:  reunion (never heard it live before)
kid fears (it rocked!), power of two (loved it!), and of course
blister in the sun!  danielle & her tantrums came back out
& helped on this one.  i thought it was awesome on the warfield boot,
but seeing it live is even better!  everyone had so much energy.
and it really pumped up the crowd.  well, this is enough babble
from me.  i gotta get ready for the roadtrip to starkville!

here's the setlist in exact order:
joking
it's alright
reunion
southland in the springtime (seems fitting for memphis show in april!)
shame on you
least complicated
kid fears
get out the map
scooter boys
ghost
i don't wanna know (with danielle & *some* of the tantrums, i think)
power of two
leeds (cute emily moment- see above)
chickenman (dave ellison kick ass harmonica jam)
galileo

encore:
shed your skin
blister in the sun
closer to fine

well, there you have it folks!  excuse my not-so-great "review", i've never
actually posted one before.  but i'll have a report on the mississippi
show tonight to post sometime tomorrow.  wooohoo!!!!

i was a chili's after the show and didn't meet any list people.
oh well- maybe next time we can be more coordinated and have a
*real* listmeet.  see ya guys!
