this was copied, without permission, from atlanta's creative loafing
(on-line) dated wed 06 may 1998 (by gregory nicoll):
atlanta band stereo popsicle are finishing up their debut cd
for the local indie ndeck records. tentatively entitled sunlight
& toys, it's being mixed by blake eiseman (lift, urban grind,
shock lobo, ruben kincaid). the cd features emily saliers of the
indigo girls doing co-lead vocals with the popsicle's singer
trina meade (ex-social insanity) on an acoustic version of their
song "jenny," about a sexually abused teenage girl. proceeds
from this song will benefit the georgia counsel on child abuse.
the indigo girls perform the clash's "clampdown" on a clash
tribute album titled simply the tribute, which is tentatively
scheduled for an august 25 release on epic (the clash's american
label), although that date might be moved so as not to conflict
with a new forthcoming clash live album assembled from vintage
tapes by joe strummer and paul simonon. other bands participating
on the tribute include rancid, cracker, 311 and the mighty mighty
bosstones. the groups are alldonating their share of the profits
to the los angeles children's hospital's high-risk youth program.

there's also a story about the cancellation in tn on the state site
<http://www.thestate.com/docs/06cancel.htm>
i just can't stop shaking my head over this mess :(
here's the text of the article (used without permission):
knoxville, tenn. -- it's strike three for the indigo girls.
the grammy award-winning lesbian folk duo was supposed to give a free
concert today at farragut high school, but school officials canceled it.
it's the third high school concert called off in the past week, including
one at irmo high school outside columbia, s.c.
the indigo girls -- emily sailers and amy ray -- also were turned away by
germantown high school officials in west tennessee.
"it's understood by everyone that the show was canceled because the indigo
girls are gay," said kanishka biddanda, co-editor of the farragut student
newspaper, which helped sponsor the concert.
but principal ed hedgepeth said the group's sexuality wasn't a factor. he
said the show was canceled because of news reports last weekend that the
musicians used profanity at a previous concert.
"i'd rather err on the side of caution when it comes to the people that we
have presenting in the schools," hedgepeth said.
some students said they planned to protest by wearing pro-gay clothing and
possibly staging a sit-in.
in south carolina, any irmo students who stage a walkout thursday will have
to make up the day in a saturday detention hall, principal gerald witt said.

i can't help but be angered by that comment made by principal chism of
germantown high school. it appears that there had been dialogue between
ig and the principal about not using the f-word, yet it makes no
difference at all. they can't even take ig's vow not to use the word.
something is very wrong with this picture. :(
principal pulls plug on another indigo girls show
indigo girls
the indigo girls, who are in the midst of a three-week tour of high
school and college campuses, have been banned from playing yet another
high school.
the concert, which was scheduled for this tuesday at germantown high
school in germantown, tennessee, was canceled because the indigo girls
used profanity during a recent high school performance in georgia.
as we previously reported (see "indigo girls speak out on show
cancellation"), the principal of irmo high school in irmo, south
carolina, canceled an indigo girls show slated for thursday because of
complaints about the duo's openly gay sexuality.
the girls have since re-scheduled and re-located that show for this
thursday at 4 p.m. at the township auditorium in irmo and have given
away 2,000 free tickets to high school students.
for ernest chism, the principal of germantown high school, sexuality is
not the main issue, as chism is primarily concerned that amy ray and
emily sailers will sing "shame on you," which features the dreaded "f"
word, a song they performed at loganville high school in georgia on
april 13.
while the indigo girls vowed not to use profanity, chism said "once you
give entertainers a microphone, you're at their mercy."
the girls' spring tour winds down may 8 at the backyard in austin,
texas, with a zapatista benefit featuring shawn colvin, rickie lee jones
and steve earle.

hkf's,
the story begins with a pint of guinness on a warm night in greenville, sc.
the place is timmons arena on the campus of furman university where the
purple paladins do battle.
terri binion opened up with her band, and she was very good. had never
seen her before, and she's got one heck of a voice on her. and the music
wasn't country, and wasn't folk, or wasn't just plain rock - but it's
somewhere in the middle there. terri was in a good mood but she realized
we were all here to see saliers & ray. she would just say "indigo girls"
in the mike and the crowd went crazy. she did this a few times and got a
kick out of it.
anyway, ig!
i was on amy-side 10 rows back, and the new arena had good acoustics (a
little echo-y though) amy seemed to be in a real good mood, lots of
smiles. emily didn't have too many smiles, but she had a bunch of awesome
solos - and acoustic solos much be soooo hard! (i was impressed)
here's the songs in no order:
it's alright, 3hits, thin line, ghost, let it be me, kid fears, lc,
sb(soc), sys, leeds, chickenman (w/ dave), galileo, ttbt, gone again, i
don't wanna know, po2, gotm, ctf.
(the exact order will be posted soon) but here's an overview/highlight:
started off w/ it's alright, 3hits, and then thin line i think. when a+e
played thin line, it was the real start of the excitement - or that concert
"high". you know the "oh yeah, oh yeah, alright!" part, sort of a
crescendo at the end of the first verse (i think) - that is my favorite
part and it just made everything seem right at that point in time.
scooter boys w/ the soc was amazing! for the soc it was sooooo powerful,
ending w/ the sb line (i think "see i come from priviledge too" or maybe
"crying about my own virginity") (anyone help me on this one???) and then
after that, amy said "here's (there's) your f**kin' liberty!!!!!!!" and
that was just like "whoooaaaa - she is just ragin'!!!!" she spit a little
bit on that last angry line, and that just made it even more powerful.
ghost started off slow and not deep & powerful, but then it just became the
great song that it is - piercing the soul and harmonies of perfection. it
really speaks the truth to me, so that was what made it great also. in a
subtle sort of way, this song just crescendos/builds up into such a great
song & story - it's hard to describe but it's one of my faves live.
kid fears was similar to ghost, it really brought out the emotion and even
though i couldn't do the stipe part - it sure is fun tryin'!!!!! (apologies
to my concert neighbors having to listen to me! :p ) these two songs
were probably the highlight - this kf was definitely just as good as the
botby'all version (maybe better since in person is always better!)
gone again was a pleasant surprise. amy said something about how it's a
new song, and emily is still learning it. i thought "emily! doesn't know
how to play a song!!!!!! that can't be true!"
but it was a real good amy song (well any amy song is good!!!-or maybe
that's just me)
leeds started out great, and then emily stops playing after about a minute
& says: "oops, i forgot the chords!" and then she got started again, and
had to think real hard to remember what part she was up to. very humorous.
ctf w/ terri and all them was great as usual. even though it's predictable
- - it puts a nice cherry on top of the entire night. (or a nice bow if you
like) terri really showed her great voice - even though she messed up the
lyrics, and the beat was all messed up - so a+e had to sort of find the
down-beat again by facing each other and strummin' away. no problem for
the fabulous saliers & ray! (i love the way that sounds!)
no setlist for me, but b/c everyone normally breaks down the barricade to
get to sulli, she threw three setlists in the form of paper airplanes into
the crowd (if i was jordan i would have had one of those!)
all in all, great show, great night, great place - and all over by about
11:10/11:15.
sorry for the length, but thanks for listening!!!

3rd indigo girls concert canceled
.c the associated press
knoxville, tenn. (ap) - it's strike three for the indigo girls.
the lesbian folk duo was supposed to give a free concert wednesday at farragut
high school, but school officials canceled.
it's the grammy-winning group's third high school show to be called off in a
week.
farragut principal ed hedgepeth said the duo's sexuality wasn't a factor. the
concert was canceled because of news reports last weekend that the indigo
girls used profanity at a previous concert, he said.
''i'm not sure exactly (in) what context (profanity) was used, whether it was
used in an actual song or whether it was used on stage at some point in a
comment,'' hedgepeth said.
''i'd rather err on the side of caution when it comes to the people that we
have presenting in the schools,'' he said.
kanishka biddanda, co-editor of the school newspaper, tells a different story.
''it's understood by everyone that the show was canceled because the indigo
girls are gay,'' she said. the newspaper helped sponsor the concert.
