the indigo girls discover it's sometimes warmer in the north

the crowd was full of 20-something women and teenagers toting cameras at
the women's action for new directions reception at the state house
saturday. the younger guests came to meet this year's wand honorees, indigo
girls emily saliers and amy ray, who were recognized with activist winona
laduke for their efforts to raise awareness about the dangers of
transporting nuclear waste. saliers and ray took a break from their touring
schedule to make the reception, where guests included wand president
barbara hildt, wand executive director susan shaer and supporters sayre
sheldon, eleanor lecain, and peggy kerry. last week, four high schools in
the south canceled free shows by the indigo girls, in part because parents
objected that both women are lesbians. saturday ray said the controversy
left her impressed by the teenagers' activism. ''we saw these students
protesting this and walking out and getting signatures and we rescheduled
the shows. we didn't create this. they created the media frenzy. it wasn't
emily and i,'' she said.

got the latest issue (may '98) of "atlanta" magazine (varsity turns 70).
there's a great photo of the igs (first epic release timeframe) - full
page (pg. 147) - at the beginning of the "a list" (where to go/what to
do). the caption reads they'll be performing at the music midtown
festival. it's a photo i haven't seen before (and no, i don't have a
scanner). amy's in the corner in a black t-shirt in the ripped jeans with
the boots with the silver toes. emily in a white shirt/jeans and doc
martens(?). amy's looking straight ahead at the camera, emily's looking
off towards her right. looks like it was taken around the same time as
the photos in the ig songbook.

okay, rawkin traci loth sent a note to nettwerk telling them that the ig
part 8 interview on the calgary 97 recap page didn't work. and they
fixed it... *but*... (one of those big, nasty "buts" again!)... it's
*not* amy talking about her religious beliefs... it's just emily talking
about working with women (i don't ever remember seeing this one before).
so, i thought that meant that the amy / religion mov was gone -- and
sent traci a sad, little note. so, she says -- hey, i'll just tell them
and maybe they'll fix it. so... then a while later... welp... her face
was red... which meant that my face was about to get even redder...

the amy on religion clip was hiding at lilith97 all along... and i do
mean hiding... you *can't* get there from the 'dates' page, cuz it's
from the last recap (makes *no* sense to me) -- you can *only* get to it
from the main lilith97 page:

the 2nd paragraph about vancouver! <grrrrr>

and there under interviews on the left is:

refrain from volunteering...!)

my ray: "my spirituality really does exist in nature. and i don't...
i'm not a christian. so... umm... for me that's the extent of how i can
explain it. and, for both emily and i, it's a big part of our lives, and
we feel a stronger pull... you know, on us from unknown powers and we
try to follow it. and... umm... you know, what drives us probably more
than anything is our spiritual attachment to that."

emily: "i grew up christian as well. i don't believe that you have to
believe in christ to be saved and all that stuff, and that christianity
is the true faith. so, in that sense, technically, i'm not a true
christian. but, i believe that the teachings of jesus... i mean, what he
did was -- he hung out with diverse folks, you know... with whores and
sinners and people of the cloth or whatever and people of different race
- -- and that's... that epitomizes, like... perfect human relationship,
you know... umm... the blessings of diversity."

[sorry, but i am now officially out of the 1.5 mb mov file email
attachment business. i don't wanna p.o. my isp any more, and there have
been 2 problems with the audio -- i don't know why yet -- no one with
the audio problem has told me what version of qt 'play32.exe' they have
- -- that might make a difference. altho, it might have to do with their
systems using activemovie to play qt... whatever... ]
