subject: [ig-news] ig bumper sticker ordering info (finally)

finally!!!

here's the info on the long-awaited indigo girls bumpersticker!!!  it's
been a long day, so please excuse any stupid typos or seemingly
irrelevant information.  the lovely kate has generously offered to put
up a picture of the sticker on her page.  first, keep in mind that that
is not the real size (it's actually 3 3/4'' x 7 1/2'' - a bit smaller
than the image on your screen.)  if you don't have web access, the
stickers are the letters "a + e = ig" in white type, surround by a deep
blue - the closest color to indigo available.  not the same blue as the
picture on the web.  it's gonna be a bit darker and deeper.  originally
they were gonna be blue surrounded by white, but as i've educated myself
bumperstickers, i've noticed that white letters look much sharper than
darker colored stickers.  they are going to be on a transparent adhesive
sticker that is guaranteed not to damage your car, and they will be
adhesive on the back, so if you don't have a car you can stick it
somewhere else. also, the computer graphic doesn't really do the real
image justice - it looks much cleaner in real life.  check out the
sticker at: www.geocities.com/broadway/alley/2286/indigo.html

the ordering and price information is as follows:

1 - 5 stickers are $1.75 per sticker.  this includes shipping and
handling.
5 - 10 stickers are $1.75 per sticker plus $0.50.
more than 10 stickers are $1.75 per sticker plus $1.00.

send your money to the following address:

lizzy hoke
attn: bumpersticker
12700 lake ave.  #2605
lakewood, ohio  44107

with your order please include the following:
1) a note with your address and
2) your email addy and
3) how many stickers you want
4) if you are paying by check (i highly prefer checks) please make it
out to "elizabeth hoke"
5) if you are paying with cash, be smart and don't include change, and
don't send it in a cheap sheer envelope with the cash showing through.
if i don't get your money, you won't get the stickers.
6) if you are paying some other way (money order or something) that's
fine, just so long as i can deposit it into my bank account.

to reiterate, i'm not making any money on these stickers - i'm reselling
them to you at my cost.  this includes all shipping costs - postage,
packaging, etc.  ergo it costs more to get more stickers sent to you.
other important points:

1) i am going to be unsubbing and unavailable via email for the summer
on june 9.  my brother, chris, will be handling all transactions at that
point.  continue to address all orders to me, and all checks should
still be made out to me.  he won't be subbing to this list, but if you
have any questions of any sort after june 9, his email is
choke@smashing-pumpkins.com.  the smashing pumpkins are his true love,
but he's still an avid ig fan, so i forgive him.  no, no, i like the
smashing pumpkins, don't anyone get offended.  esp james' new solo album
- - anyone else heard this?  it's fabulous - much more positive and not as
dark as traditional billy corgan nonsense.
2) this offer will expire july 1.  if i have a ton of extra stickers, i
will make another offer this september or so, when i'm back online.
july 1 means send your orders by june 25.  chris will be leaving town
for a couple weeks around the first week of july, and this all needs to
be wrapped up by then.  be aware that if you send me money after july 1,
you may not be getting your stickers for a couple months.
3) if you are overseas, please send me whatever extra money for postage
you deem appropriate.  i have no idea what different overseas rates are,
so i'm gonna trust y'all to be honest with me and send the correct
amount.  but bear in mind that if i get to the postoffice to send them
to you, and you didn't send me enough money, i'll probably be emailing
you to ask you to send more $ - just don't be cheap.
4) you should expect your sticker(s) to arrive in 4-6 weeks at the very
latest.  the stickers won't be arriving here for 2-3 weeks, and
turnaround time from getting your order to sending your order shouldn't
be more than a week.  if you've been waiting for more than 6 weeks,
email chris and ask him if he received your order and what's the status.

5) right now there is no maximum number of stickers you can order.  but
i only ordered 250, so keep that in mind.

well, i think that about covers it.  i hope i'm not forgetting anything
important.  i'm tempted to consider interesting trades for stickers, so
email me if you're feeling creative... but before june 9.  any
questions, let me know.  but, please, don't feel the need to email me if
you're ordering.  just go ahead and send me your order via snail mail.
and, in the unlikely event that i get orders for more than 250 stickers,
someone will post to the list right away to say that there are no more
stickers available.  so go grab your checkbooks, and send away for these
beauties today!!! cause you know you'll just forget if you put it off
too long, and you'll be all bummed cause you'll glance at a calendar and
realize its already july 1 and you never send me your order. and these
stickers are gonna be fabulous...

hey all!

i managed to find this issue of cmj.  the full title is cmj new music monthly
and it is indeed the july 98 issue with tricky on the cover.  here's the brief
interview for those who can't get to it right away...

lydia vanderloo

fresh off the release of the "shed your skin" remix done by rage against the
machine's tom morello, the indigo girls are headlining several lilith fair
dates
in june and july, and will be hitting clubs with the rolling thunderpussy
review
in late august.  amy ray chats about the impetus behind female-themed tours.

q: tell me about the rolling thunderpussy review.
a: about five years ago we were touring, and siouxsie from siouxsie & the
banshees was with us on the road, because her partner budgie was playing drums
with us.  and [we were also touring with] this other folk singer named ferron
from canada.  and we were all singing on stage together, and it was weird:
this
person from this serious post-punk sort of world, and this staunch folk singer
and us, together doing a neil young cover or something.  and i was like, "man,
we ought to get all the women we know from different bands, and just form a
band
and go on the road and play rock clubs, like a socialist experiment."  so
we're
forming a traveling ensemble based losely on bob dylan's rolling thunder
review,
and we're calling it the rolling thunderpussy review because it's all women.
it's only ten shows and it's rock clubs, not big places.  it's going to be the
same basic lineup, but we're going to have guests, and we're going to use a
couple of different girl punk bands to open the shows--one group will do five
shows, the other group will do five shows.

q: do you worry that tours like this one and lilith can, in some people's
minds,
marginalize women in some way, like put them all in the same category?
a: well, i think the point of the rolling thunderpussy revue is that women
make
a lot of different kinds of music.  i do have concerns about the ghettoization
and marginalization of women musicians in general, and how it's seen as a
trend.
but i think for us we are kind of looking at it outside of that experience,
and
saying, "well, we know that happens and it's a concern of ours, but this
tour is
much more about us within the women's community breaking down our own
predjudices."  because i know that even during lilith, i experienced that
tendency, to see a mainstream artist and automatically judge them by what they
looked like--a woman, who i'm supposed to be a supporter of!  so i would judge
them myself with my own predjudices, and it would be like the opposite of
what a
man's predjudice might be.  it would be like, "well, they're beautiful, they
must not be talented."  i caught myself thinking this way, and i was like,
"this
is bullshit!"  i think that although i have concerns about the marginalization
of women, i am in the spirit of women having their own space sometimes.

yeah, well the subject line pretty much says it all.  as i was happily walking
out of tower records with my lovely copy of cmj i stopped by the postcard rack
and could have sworn i was hallucinating when i saw indigo girls staring
back at
me from the shelf.  it's a really nice photo (the same one as on the first
page
of the first curve interview with amy).  all indigo with a little shot of the
sots cd in the corner and the back says "appearing live on lilith fair".  very
sweet (does emily looks 8 years old to anyone else?).  so check it out....

hey all,
the girls are in the june 8th issue of time magazine.  it's on the bottom
of page 40 and the text reads:(all typos, etc. are mine)
"not here, not now.  free expression has taken some hard knocks
lately...(a bit about terrence mcnally's play)...in south carolina and
tennessee, high schools canceled indigo girls concerts because of offensive
lyrics...(then a bit about stevie nicks.)"
there is a pic of the girls (amy's playing a 12 string and emily's kind of
looking off into space) and pic of steevie nicks.  i sure wish they had
elaborated, instead of just saying "because of offensive lyrics".
there is also a pic each of joni mitchel and ellen degeneres later in the
magazine.

subject: [ig-news] sys remix availability

[sherlyn's note: this message was originally sent to the indigo
girls mailing list at netspace.org.  this is a forward for
everybody as confused as i have been about the different
versions of the new sys remix out there.]

hope you are having a good weekend!

the tom morello remix of sys is available right now in at least 3 ways:

1- red cover shed your skin promo single that was sent to college radio (i
think).  if you're a lucky duck you might be able to find a copy in your
local used record shop.  this one has 5 tracks (sys album, sys live, sys
remix, gotm live, soy live).

2-blue cover ep also a promotional item, this will be available at tower
records' lilith fair booth **with the purchase of sots.**  every date on
lilith will have an alloted number of eps, so those at the end of the tour
will have as good a chance as those at the beginning of the tour.  this cd
has 6 tracks: sys remix, gotm live, soy live, eiiot live, blister in the
sun live, sys live.  (sys, gotm, + soy live are the same recordings as are
on the red sys.)

3- the cmj sampler.  don't know anything about this one other than that it
is out there.

as far as releasing the remix as a commercial single ... that's pretty
vague.  at some point after lilith ends, epic/sony/indigo girls may decide
to do something else with it, or they may not.

happy hunting, caroline

subject: [ig-news] (slightly old) review of austin zapatista benefit

hey folks,

this is a little old (about a month), but i just found it on
the web and i think it's worthwhile.  it can be found on the
mining company web site at
http://altmusic.miningco.com/library/weekly/aa051198.htm.

===
backstage with the indigo girls

dateline: 05/11/98

austin, tx - "it's been a week for politics," quipped amy ray,
half of the alternative-edged folk-rock duo indigo girls, soon
after taking the stage for the zapatista benefit concert at the
backyard on friday night. ray was making reference to several
incidents of the past week when three high schools cancelled
scheduled, free afternoon concerts by the indigo girls, who say
they are trying to support creative arts in public schools and
reach their younger fans with the daytime shows.

"we are saddened and angry to hear our show at irmo high school
has been cancelled," said ray in a statement issued through her
publicist. "it is a blatant case of homophobia." south carolina
public school officials clumsily blamed the incidents on the
girls use of the f-word in one of their songs. "we only cuss
once a night," announced ray on stage at the backyard. "but
we're gay the rest of the time," she added to roaring cheers
from the crowd.

the indigo girls actively support organizations supporting gun
control, youth pride, environmental concerns, and equal rights
for minorities and indigenous peoples. backstage at the
zapatista benefit, ray explains why the indigo girls always
seem to have a political agenda.

"they are not all separate issues," she insisted. "it's all
one issue." ray admires the zapatistas, a rebel indigenous
army in mexico fighting for a better standard of living against
the sometimes brutal military oppression imposed by the mexican
government. "zapatistas have great dignity and discipline," she
says. "there's really no other way to describe it. we support
this project so they won't have to endanger themselves."

at the same time, ray is concerned about the actions of the
u.s. government, which regularly sends aid to mexico. she
criticizes an abusive system which uses those funds against
government dissenters. "as a u.s. citizen," pronounced ray, "i
oppose the use of american tax dollars going to support the
oppression of these indigenous people."

the zapatista benefit concert drew a sold out crowd to the
backyard for stripped-down performances from a very pregnant
shawn colvin, rickie lee jones, the indigo girls, and steve
earle. the audience delighted in a special appearance from
edwin mccain, who met indigo girl emily saliers on a flight
from atlanta and agreed to participate in the event singing
"prayer to st. peter," an anonymous poem found in a world war
ii hospital. the indigo girls performed several politically
charged numbers including "scooter boys," off their most
recent album, shaming of the sun, and a new song speaking out
against the death row execution of karla faye tucker. the
evening ended with a group jam performance of leadbelly's
"good night irene."

supporting the ongoing struggle inherent to political
oppression, the indigo girls are dedicated to fighting against
intolerance, homogenization, and disenfranchisement of
minority groups. through the benefit concert, they hope to
raise awareness among their fans and the american people.
