there is a picture at the top, amys in the back with a black leather jacket
on, and glack pants, and her hair is about shoulder lenght. emily is in the
front witha white shirt on and a black cloth jacket. it is a really good
picture... i have the face shot of it scanned on the puter, but not the
body... really cute.
title: "making friends that count"
magizine: time the princeton review
subtitle: the best college for you
issue: 1998 edition
author: greg fulton/atlanta, and adina kaplan, sarah tuff/n.y.
ok here goes... cuse the typos...
the indigo girls, emily saliers and amy ray, like to call it fate that they
both transferred to emory university in georgia. ray spent her first yeat at
vanderbilt in tennessee, while saliers was at tulane university in new
orleans. both were also legacies of emory; that is, they each had a parent
who attended. saliers graduated with a b.a. in english. she was a member of
honor board, a club called emory waging peace, and a phi beta kappa, which
ain't all bad for a popular singer.
"my dad teaches at emory, and i grew up in atlanta, so i thought it was
important to move away. after two years, though, i yearned for a change and
transferred. i loved my two years at emory. i met the most incredible group
of friends and was continually challenged academically and personally. my
advice for the collegebound is to choose a school with a diverse faculty-race,
gender, sexual orientation, and background-and a commitment to a diverse
student body. make sure the curriculum extends way beyond 'classic'
education. go to class. soak it all up, and realize that while academia can
be a sort of bubble, it can also be the springboard for an inspired and active
life. and be sure to have lots of fun."
ray graduated in 1986 with a double major in music, she says she chose emory
because of atlanta's built-in music scene, a more diversified student body
than she had found at vanderbilt, the prestige of the english and religion
departments and because her grandfather and both her parents went there.
"i remember lots of fun shows on campus and good times making music with and
for theater productions, and great seminars on the holocaust taught by dr.
jack boozer," she says.
she, like saliers, believes classroom learning has great merit. her advice
for the collegeboung: "get involved politically, read noam chomsky books,
support the arts at your school, get involved with different types of people
and learn to appreciate diversity. be wary of cliques, be freww and pay
attention in class."

spotlight this eveing at 9:30ish with sterling. i've never listened to
artist spotlight so i don't know what will be covered. my guess is that
they'll replay archived in studio interviews/performances or just play a
couple songs off the albums. natalie merchant will be on thursday, sarah m

popper plans to play lilith, may travel harp-less:
paula cole won't be the only artist doing double duty this summer
playing both the lilith fair and the h.o.r.d.e. festival tours.
blues traveler's john popper has told the new york times he plans
to sit in with the indigo girls at some lilith fair shows. popper
says, "i'm really into the music lilith does. i have a repertoire
of acoustic songs on my own and i really want to be on lilith. so
i'm going to do it. i bumped into one of the indigo girls and i'm
going to sit in with them." popper also revealed that he's
considering not having any harmonica playing on the next blues
traveler album. even though he is best known for that instrument,
popper says he's going to focus instead on singing and playing
guitar. "a lot of people have decided blues traveler is a good
band backing a harp player," he explained. "it would force us to
evolve.
