anyway, for those in the la area - the current issue of lesbiannews has a
2 page interview with amy.  indigo girls are the cover  photo too, but
it's just a film-strip like thing with two old pictures - the one on the
tower postcards and the one where amy is bare foot and emily is wearing
the rage shirt.  it's a long interview, she mentions some touring plans
at the end which i'll really look up and type in later but briefly in
addition to michfest and newport, she mentioned 3 or 4 benefits, one in
florida, one for the zapatistas, one for a gay andlesbian taskforce and
... okay maybe 3 or i forgot one.  also she described rolling thunder as
"an east coast club tour" as if living in california wasn't being
annoying enough today.

also, at the end of the article it says "for more amy ray, visit
wwww.lesbiannews.com" which i haven't tried yet, because of my
web-deprived machine.

and lastly - did everyone else but me already know that the lilith site is
posting lots of pictures of e & a - you have to go to the dates page,
click on a show (one that has already happened, preferably) which gets you
the line-up, then click on the artist and you get a page with picture
thumbnails and maybe some multimedia.  lots of pictures especially from
the autograph signing at the san francisco show.

okay, that's it

hey folks,

there's a lilith review in the san francisco gate -
the url is:
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/1998/06/25/dd77542.dtl

(that's all on one line)

here's the bit about ig:

===
folk veterans

but it was veteran folkies the indigo girls who stole the show
before it was half over. the duo -- amy ray and emily saliers --
were greeted with waves of applause that continued (punctuated
with random whooping) throughout a 40-minute set. as they swapped
vocals and instrumental leads, ray and saliers balanced their
political content with luxuriant harmonizing and an array of
hooks sharp enough to punch holes in a hundred pop balloons.

mclachlan and, to the audience's delight, joan baez (who lives in
the bay area) came on to sing backup during several songs, and
both returned -- accompanied by second-stage band k's choice --
for an anthemic rendition of neil young's ''rocking in the free
world.''
===

that's it!

interview: indigo girls

sound off
indigo girl amy ray speaks about social activism and the lilith fair
by michael evans

the indigo girls' folk-oriented pop records have earned five grammy
award nominations, as well as an award for best contemporary folk
album for their 1989 self-titled debut. but the indigos --
34-year-old georgians amy ray and emily saliers -- are as committed
to the community as they are to their music; the women support
social causes ranging from gay rights and gun control to
environmentalism.

the indigos bring their finely honed harmonies to portland june 19th
for opening day of lilith fair's 57-date, north american jaunt. amy
ray recently called into citysearch and, as always, spoke her mind.

citysearch: did you think that lilith would become as popular as it
has? naysayers thought a woman-dominated show could be a commercial
disaster...

amy ray: with all these successful people on the bill, there was no
way it was not going to be a really popular festival. i didn't
think it was  big risk. i don't know why there was any question.
most on the bill had top 20 hits and albums that were already
selling. how could [the festival] not do well?

c: last year's show was criticized as stylistically homogenous, too
heavy on singer/songwriter types. was the complaint valid?

ar: i do think it needs to be diverse, and this year's festival is
more so. you can call all those who played last year
singer/songwriters, but when you actually listen to their music,
they all do sound different. there's a pretty big difference between
paula cole and jewel, musically.

c: lilith fair's concept of featuring only female or female-led
acts -- isn't that segregationist?

ar: when you actually look at the bill, there were more men onstage
than women. i don't think there is anything wrong with [the format].
i mean...who cares?

c: nobody would complain if the line-up were made up of all men...

ar: we would be...if a show like lollapalooza or the h.o.r.d.e. tour
didn't include enough women...

c: the indigos toured of high schools earlier this spring, and there
was some controversy and cancellations? what happened?

ar: we had five dates set up, and three of them were canceled -- two
of them specifically because we are gay...and one because of a
complaint about the word "fuck" being in one of our songs. kids
protested and staged walkouts. we coordinated alternate shows in
all-age venues...after school. but we went through quite a lot to
book these shows, getting school-board approval and all. so we were
very surprised when [the concerts] didn't happen as planned.

c: you and saliers' homosexuality has been common knowledge for a
few years, do you miss the days of when your music was just judged on
its own merits?

ar: i don't think our music was ever judged on its merits. the
mainstream rock press has [concentrated] more on our image...than our
music. it would be nice to read a story about us that doesn't refer to
how many women are in our audience. when they review pearl jam's album
they don't talk about the demographics of their audience. however, i'm
beginning to feel that we're being judged more on our music [now] than
our lifestyle. it's kind of old news now.

c : what do you think social activism brings to your music?

ar: i would be a social activist regardless of whether i was a
musician or not. being a musician just gives me more access and more
money to give and help with. [social activism] grounds us, gives us
this sense of what's really going on in the world...versus this rock
world of hype and fantasy. it keeps you from going crazy.

[sherlyn's note: this message was originally sent to the indigo

it was hot & miserable.  my hubby & i had to drive 6 hours to get there - but
damnit it was worth it!  we staked out a decent spot in the general admission
chaos.  all five of the main stage acts were great but our girls were by far
the best (yes, i'm biased but it's true!).  i've been blessed to see them
three times now.   i believe that yesterday was the best yet (despite the fact
that it was only 50 minutes).  plain & simple they rocked!  literally.  my
last 2 shows were pretty mellow - not this one!  amy wore orange jeans & a
long sleeved striped shirt.  em had on blue shorts & a short sleeved blue
shirt.  like every other lillith it was ig who go the crowd on its feet.  the
set (to the best of my recollection - justin?  sunny?)

chickenman - sinead did a verse, great em guitar solo & harmonica solo (i
don't know who was playing!) + amy was in great form!
galileo - em handled sound problems with class; we knew what to sing - but the
crowd as a whole did not!  em laughed - very cute
shame on you - rockin' - the crowd loved the "fuckin' up" line
virginia woolf - em was in great voice - heck, they both were the whole set!
tried to be true - jammin'
get out the map - bonus: *beautiful* sunset behind the stage to go with "big
ball of orange slipping slyly through the trees"
cut it out / wish you were here - another rockin' time with a great segue -
em's electric guitar work was an *amazing* compliment to amy's passionate
vocals
water is wide - n'dea & sarah joined
keep on rockin' in the free world - great cover with k's choice!
ctf - fun solo courtesy of natalie merchant's trumpet player

the sun was setting as the last chords of ctf faded - it was fabulous.  we
felt blessed & lucky to be a part of it.  if anyone gets the albuquerque
journal - that's me pouring water on myself on page a6!  a nice bonus for a
perfect day!
