girls mailing list at netspace.org.]

someone posted a few weeks to say that ig will be on the cover of the
performing songwriter.  indeed they are (the july issue).  i haven't gotten to
read the article yet but it looks like the interview with amy is the same as
the one in goldmine.  the cover photo looks like it came from the same photo
shoot as the curve cover.  emily looks really tough in the picture, amy looks
tired. there's a collage of pictures in the centerfold which i'm definitely
going to hang up.

i was able to find this magazine in nyc and no, i do not have any extra
copies.

hi everybody,

the lesbian news on-line have a snippet of the interview in the current
july '98 issue:

the indigo girls!

more from amy ray

by heidi hudson

ln: you are both such an influence on young, old and in-between. do you
notice the diversity at your shows?

amy ray: we've noticed. we feel appreciative of that. we don't know why
it's happening. we try not to think about it because we'll curse it if
we do! that's the favorite thing about the movement of our career to us,
that has been watching the demographic grow of our audience. it's great
to play to people who are our peers, who have the same value systems and
the same exact structures we have in life, but it's also great to play
to people who might feel slightly different to us. the diversity is
better and in age is better. i think generations need to teach each
other things. everyone associates that older people are conservative and
younger people&emdash;you know, it's this kind of thing like you can
learn from everybody. there are people that went before us in their 60's
now that did a lot of stuff that's allowing us to be who we are today.

ln: how's your own record label, daemon records, going?

amy ray: good. actually its been around for 8 years now. it's slowly
growing and we've been through a lot of configurations and a lot of
different ideas on how to run a record label. i'm just now starting to
get the hang of it.

ln: have you signed any new artists to daemon?

amy ray: i have a record coming out in a couple of weeks by a band from
alabama called three finger cowboy, they're sort of like a punky-rock
band, poppy-punk, i don't know how to describe them! it's very old-time
rock-n-roll, really good song writing. they're just like a rock band.
their songs are so great. their record is called kissed and its coming
out in a few weeks. they're amazing.

ln: do you ever feel tired or burnt out from doing so much?

amy ray: i get pretty tired and sometimes i think that i need to not do
so much. this year's been pretty rough. we've done a lot of benefits, a
lot of projects where we just don't show up and play. the groups we are
involved in we usually put the benefits together ourselves and we
organize all the artists. it takes a lot of energy. the record label
takes a lot of energy. emily and i are constantly trying to change the
scenario as well. we play with a band, play without a band ... change
back and forth and always have to readjust and practice. it's worth it.
whenever i look at slowing down, i don't want to, i really enjoy
everything i'm doing. i want to do it. if i get burnt out, sometimes
i'll just take a day and not do anything and that's pretty much enough
to recharge me!

ln: that's it? that's usually your break, one day?

amy ray: what we do usually is go on the road for three weeks and then
we take a week or ten days off and we do that for a year or year and a
half. but during my breaks i'm usually working at the record label so
there is not really ever complete down time. there is more time than you
think, though. there's a lot of waiting around when you're on the road;
waiting around for soundcheck, waiting around for interviews... in that
time you're really alone. you can have some contemplative time.

ln: i was reading some of your diary notes on the internet from your
trip to mexico. you and emily are both very good writers. [she laughs.]
do either one of you foresee writing a book sometime in the
future&emdash;fictional or real?

amy ray: i have encouraged emily because i feel that she has a real
talent. i have never considered it myself. i probably never will. it's a
labor for me to write anything except songs!

[sherlyn's note: this message was originally sent to the indigo

since info is scarse as usual, we might as well post about on-sales, even
if it's repetitive..

right now, there are two shows in the suffragette tour on-sale via
ticketmaster:

8/19 - portland, maine  (on line this is under "suffragette sessions")
8/24 - detroit, michigan (on line this is under "indigo girls")

both are general admission.  total prices if you order them on line at
the ticketmaster web site are $30-$32 ish.

the site is http://www.ticketmaster.com

there are two more shows listed(which means they'll probably go on sale
soon):

8/28 minneapolis, minnesota
8/30 cincinatti, ohio

subject: [ig-news] jones beach lilith day 2

[sherlyn's note: this is an edited version of a message which
was originally sent to the indigo girls mailing list at
netspace.org.]

ok, now, i know i reviewed yesterday's lilith, and no, i don't have $110 to
blow on concerts in one week, so here's what this crazy listee did, just for
you guys (oh ok, maybe i had an ulterior motive, like um.. hearing the
girls!!)!! yes that's right folks, i drove down to jones beach, parked at
another parking field and walked to the ampitheatre to sit outside in the
parking lot just to hear the girls play!!

[...]

they opened with shame on you, followed by galileo with a sax solo, i
couldn't hear the name of the sax player or anything, maybe someone else can
help out here.  then, much to my excitement they played kid fears, it was a
little slow and it really missed michael stipe, but not to fear i filled in
for him quite nicely, even if only the people trying to scalp tickets heard!!
; )  song #4 was it's alright.  i hafta say that emily was really tearing it
up on this one!  you know how they sometimes change the voice parts in live
concerts, well she was all over the place with the melody, a lot of passion
and energy, a great performance.  the fifth song was shed your skin.  next
came water is wide, with just sarah and a trumpet playing a verse.  i am gonna
assume that it was the same woman who played trumpet last night, except i am
fairly sure i saw her with a flugelhorn at one point, but who knows!  she is
great by the way, she played some awesome solos, anyone know her name? next
was get out the map.  scooter boys was next and very different from last
nights version, there was this huge jam session, which included a lot of
spoken word by amy, which unfortunatly i couldn't hear very much of, but i
managed to catch the last few words, "i am the pain but so are you"  i believe
those are the words, anyone?  really exciting was a slow rendition of ghost,
which i was really excited about hearing, since it is one of my favs.  next
was closer to fine, with someone seriously messing up the first verse and a
verse by garrison starr, but that's all i could get.  i don't know who else
sang.
i think i did pretty well in this considering my seats ; )  so now you know
it folks, no need to pay for an open air arena concert!  living proof ; )

ok guys.  all ready to send off.  thank you rena, the card turned out
absolutely wonderful!  the grand total comes to $1060  :)  which i think is
awesome... considering the time frame we had.  i want to thank everyone who
contributed and those who didnt also.  the donation is being made on behalf of
the mailing list, not part of it.  without all 700+ subscribers, the list
wouldnt be what it was.  i am sure emily will appriciate it.  there were some
of you who didnt send me your email address, but i do have your regular
mailing address.  so your e/m address will not be on the card.  im sorry.  i
would look them all up, but there are approx. 25 of you who didnt.  but no
worries :)

there were a total of 47 donators.

i hope all of you have a wonderful weekend, and remember to stay safe :)

sincerely,
erin tripp and jill certo
