hey folks,

just to let all the australians here know that i saw an
ad for the "south park" episode in which the "indiglo girls"
are mentioned last night.  apparently it will be the first
episode in next monday (aug 24)'s "south park double", at
8.00pm on sbs.

cheers -
sherlyn

as i mentioned above ulali were great: funny conversational banter in
between songs; invited amy and emily out to sing on one of their songs. but
they didn't supposedly because they didn't know it. and one of ulali said it
would still be ok because they don't know what they sing half the time when
they're singing on the indigo girls' songs! they said that amy and emily
were great pals of  theirs and that we, the women of michigan should give
them a great welcome and take our shirts off for them...unfortunately the
nights there get really cold and "clammy" as emily said...not too many women
took up ulali's suggestion.

and then the indigo girls were finally on stage...with surprise, surprise,
sara lee!!!! i know sara has played the fest before, but i didn't think she
was going to be there with them since their performance had been billed as a
special duo performance. sara was awesome as usual.

so with no further ado here is the setlist (ulali sang with them on a bunch
of songs; i'm not sure which ones but i'll indicate the ones i'm pretty sure
they sang on):

least complicated: sweet and slow...i think there were some sound problems at
the beginning (no sound check coming back to haunt them!); i thought the
sound was fine on my side (amy's side) of the stage; but a woman i spoke
with on the other side of the stage said that the sound was really bad for
the first few songs.

land of canaan: energized; very cute moment when they were jamming on their
guitars:  they got close to each other, maybe too close, because there was a
loud feedback noise and they both stopped playing abruptly and started
laughing...then started up again...

it's alright
faye tucker
scooter boys (with ulali)
the wood song
gone again
love's recovery
shed your skin (with ulali)
get out the map
strange fire: amy said that "dawn" backstage asked if they could do this
song; amy said it had been a long time and wasn't sure if they remembered
it... they did just fine of course!
power of two
go: awesome
galileo: we sang the "i offer thanks to those before me..." verse, much to a &
e's pleasure and astonishment (they were like "whew, guess they do know
us!"). i think they expected the 9000 women to be more rowdy/responsive.
some women were dancing on the sides; i was singing along to a lot of songs;
but i was singing softly, as i also wanted to hear their voices.

[...]

encores:

amy solo: i can't/can get the girls???? (never heard this one before; really
good though)
genocide??? (same comment as above)
closer to fine: finally everyone stood up and my girlfriend and i went up
the center aisle to the front of the stage (w/a bunch of other women); they
invited ulali and anyone else ( no one did) to come out and sing with them.
i should have asked to get up there too, but i was too shy...i guess they
forgot to pack the penny whistle, because amy whistled that part, and they
must not have had any time to assign the third verse to anyone because emily
sang it...but we all sang along and it was great...

so that's my long review...they left right after their show! i saw them in the
van leaving the land... it was a sad moment, but i think they will play
michigan again...and anyway i get to see them in chicago next week! woohoo!
thanks you all for reading.

michele

our girls have a write up in the new issue of current biography! my
summer periodicals person was checking it in and mentioned it to me...
i wouldn't have noticed because they aren't listed on the front.

i don't think there is anything in there that would surprise any of us,
but it's a nice long article.

this periodical is a library reference work; i doubt you will find it at
the newsstand. go to your library! (only one pic)

generally a good review..left out some parts
a review  of lilith fair from music monthly (aug 98) by laura z

________
snip...
opening with "cricket man" the indigo girls began their set with force.
then, they blew the crowd away with a strong blend of hits and heavy
pumping new songs. their back-up of a male drummer and male upright bassist
was beautifully intermingled with their super female trumpet player and
awesome female cellist.

they also included some second stage artists and natalie merchant on a fun
rendition of the band's "the wait" and ended with a sing along version of
"closer to fine". the indigo girls had the most raw energy of the evening.

snip...

at the end an all star jam(led by maclachlan, but missing merchant) was a
groovy "what's going on?", by marvin gaye. it was the perfect way to end a
perfect  evening.

everyone should realize that lilith is not only about women, but the
celebration of our diversities and the appreciation of us all. at least
this is what it meant to me.
