there was a show on several years ago, i think the name of it was "going to
extremes" it was written by the writers of "northern exposure".  they used
"galileo" in there first episode as background music.

i'm reading a book about self-injuries called "bodily harm" by karen
conterio and wendy lader, ph.d. and i came across this in the first
chapter.

"teens are learning about the behavior from one another, from the press,
and from popular culture, and it is giving them ideas.   several popular
singers and rock groups - including the indigo girls- portray self-injury
in their lyrics and album art."

i wonder why the authors chose the indigo girls as the band to include.  i
thought it was interesting.

where is cutting and self mutilation portrayed in their album art?
which albums?  does anyone have an idea? also, i'm assuming the lyrics
to which they refer are from "blood and fire", although my
interpretation of that song is that the lyrics are not about self
mutiliation at all.  what other lyrics could they mean?  anyone know?

some people consider tattooing self-mutilation.  if that's the case with
these authors they may be referring to "keepr of my heart"

i am feeling the urge to watch blood and fire from live an the uptown

i would have to assume they were talking about "blood and fire".  i'm
interested in knowing your interpretation of "blood and fire" if you don't
think it's about self-injury.

"leaving my cuts, leaving my burns, hoping i'd learn."

i don't think they were talking about tattoos because they specifically
said that though tattooing could be a form of self-injury, it usually is
just about artistic expression.

i don't take that to mean literal physical cuts and burns, but rather,
emotional pain and turmoil.  anyone else - please feel free to elaborate
and expand on this simplistic interpretation, that is, if you agree.

i would have to agree that these words are not to be taken literally.  the ig
write very few, if any, songs that are just blunt and for literal
interpretation.  interesting choice of words: "cuts" and "burns"  how often do
we come across these descriptive word in literature when the author is
referring to a broken heart?  i think they are common emotional metaphors.
just my thoughts.

there's a good-looking book out, called _a bright red scream:
self-mutilation and the language of pain_  (i think that's the subtitle)
if anyone wants to check it out.

i agree that the "cutting and burning" referred to in the lyrics of baf
should not be taken literally, if that is indeed the song they are
referring to.  true, she talks about matches and knives, and leaning
over ledges,  but she's talking about cutting her heart and burning her
soul - i think she's talking metaphorically.   amy has said herself that
that song  was about a disturbing / unhealthy / addictive relationship
or something to that effect.    probably why she doesn't sing the song
anymore.  ditto for keeper of my heart.

but, i got to reading some of the other lyrics and there are references
in some songs that, if interpreted literally, rather than metaphorically
(which i think is what is intended, btw) could be construed this way -
center stage ("numbness from a sceptors wound"); walk away ("we stumble
bleeding on this broken glass"); keeper of my heart ("these are my gods,
these are my scars"); joking ("gravel and class on the bottom of my
feet, i bruised my heels on the swollen street").

i think these authors' case against ig is pretty weak. why don't go
after marilyn manson and nin and stuff like that?  so amy has used a lot
of metaphors involving blood, glass, and fire?  i don't think that
warrants a label as a band that describes self-injury in their songs.  i
wonder if a&e  have heard about their inclusion in this book, and how
they would respond?

peace,

joan :-d

i'm not saying that is definitely the case in this instance, but as with the

hey everyone...

good ol' me, back with a little digest response.
1)  years ago, the show wonder years used get together in an episode, and it
was definitely our girlies' cover!
2) i always take blood and fire to be literal, although not necessarily
autobiographical (make sense?)  maybe this is because i have been close to 4
people who have struggled seriously with self-mutilation, and i've done a
bunch of reading on it.  cuts and burns are way too personal an image to me.
i think it's completely ridiculous, though, to try to put the blame for self
mutilation on music that empowers women, when there are twelve gazillion
bands/ movies/ songs/ whatever out there telling women and girls that we
aren't good enough/ pretty enough/skinny enough.  whatever.  i think those
authors could have looked a bit further.  however, i have looked at the book
and thought about reading it.  is it any good?

alison ( who's not aways on such a rampage!)

hey y'all,

i had an indigo moment on my way to have my first pizza of the year last
night. there was a radio interview with a young female singer who was
talking about her musical influences. when she said that she loved the
indigo girls, i paid attention for who this singer with the good musical
taste was: guess who, natalie imbruglia! i've always liked "torn" a lot (one
of my fav songs of 98) - now i like it even more...

i agree with rebecca, on the figurative meaning of cuts and burns partaining
to ties and bridges...my first thought in reading that passage from that book
was "oh mah gawd...what utter bullsh*t".....evidently the person who wrote the
book, while i mean no disrespect to her as a person, did not do enough
research and i'm appalled that she would chose the indigo girls as the case in
point. type o negative or rob zombie (not that i'm dogging them, i like their
music too :) ), maybe. but the indigo girls???!!?! pshaw! anywhoo....

i guess anyone can make an error....
somebody should send that author another indigo girls cd

they used shame on you in an episode of the real world.  it was the boston
show where one of the guys was dating the mother of one of the kids at the
child care place they worked.  big no-no according to the folks that ran the
program..... so they chose shame on you.

they may be talking about "pushing the needle too far"  or "prince

hi all-

does anybody else who has a cd copy of devil's in our bones have some wierd
rhythmic static thing in tracks 13-15, or is my copy defective?  the surface
has some big scratch, but i don't think that's it.  it sounds like it's
somehow in the recording itself.  it's pretty loud and fairly annoying.
anyone help me out here?  should i get another copy?

thanks,

my girlfriend and i sing the girls. ( mic's- mixer- headphones) we were
making a tape for a friend of ours, new years day to be exact. (i got a new
mixer for christmas!  woo hoo) anyway we were practicing for "get out the
map" and i couldn't clear my throat, i sing amy's part and she sings emily's
part (very well i might add!) well she was warming up and started singing,
"i'm gonna clear my head." as she was singing i was clearing my throat and
hacking and choking. finally i started the song over to try to be serious
this time and really practice it to record. and she starts out with, " i'm
gonna clear my throat," and i chime in with, "i'm gonna spit that phlegm" it
was the funniest thing... of course we went on and on laughing and singing
our rendition of "get out the phlegm!"
"i'm gonna sing it good and strong, cuz my phlegm is good as gone!"

i know it is probably not real funny to everyone, one of those, "ya had to
be there" kinda things. any way just thought i would share that gross
hilarious laugh we had! was funny cuz right after that was when someone
posted, "which song has made you laugh the most?" so we had to post this!

actually, isn't this book called a rock and hard place by anthony godby
johnson. very good book. i had to read it for a child abuse class in
college and i kept it. a real heartbreaker that is also, oddly, a
heartwarming book at the same time. really helped center me.

hmmmmmmmmmmm....
the ig songs for the bedroom.

my "romantic interludes" would be:
side a

*mystery* (all time favorite)
love will come to you
everything in it's own time
virginia wolff
you left it up to me
the language or the kiss
ghost
crazy game

side b
(for more intense moments)

touch me fall
shed your skin
fugitive
cut it out
blood and fire
land of caanan
keeper of my heart
walk away

this would be my all time "incredible" tape/cd.  (wink wink)

i know there is probably something that i have forgotten, and will gasp
later to think that i missed that one. but this was what i could think of
off the top of my head.

i was, however wondering if anyone had a boot of ig on modern rock

beginning is cut!  argh!) but i was wondering if anyone had a copy of
the one where they recorded power of two that they used on 1200

that's really all for now.  e mail me at newmongrel@yahoo.com

hello and happy new year!
i was just curious about the status of these boots...
-newport folk festival 1998 (and ani?) (wonderful, wonderful day!)
-cincinnati suffragette sessions aug. 30, 1998 (one of the best
concerts i've ever been to!)
and does anyone have a copy of the university dayton 11/15/1997 ig show?
i've been waiting to relive this show for a long while. :)
and i guess i'll add myself to the requests for the dec. 27 boot as
well. it's worth a try. :)
let me know if you know anything about any or all of these boots! i will
be forever indebted to you! :) thanks so much!
wishing everyone an indigo week!

hey guys,

i work as a secretary during the day and at an answering service at night,
so i talk to lots of people on the phone all over the country (then i come
home at night and email people all over the world...funny for someone who is
so connected i sure dont feel that way......tee hee)  anyway, the other
night i was at the answering service and i answered a call from a woman in
atlanta.....it was right after the eddies attic show, and as i was dealing
with her problem, we had a few minutes to jabber while i was typing the long
message she wanted to leave..so, as i typed i asked her if she had ever been
to eddies attic...innocent question right?  well i about lost it when she
said that she was still pissed because she had to work during the show on
the 27th!!!!!! turns out the chick was an ig fan and had tried everything in
the world to get off that night to go see the show............hmmmmmm
wondering  wondering how long i will have to work there before one of the
girls calls one of the places i answer for.....................

wow! did we ever get a huge amount of snow yesterday. outside my front
door, there is about 26 inches or more.but, it resulted in me having a
very indigo afternoon. as my family was outside shoveling, my dogs and i
had the house to ourselves. that is a rare moment around here, so i
figured i would milk it for all it was worth. i put 5 different girls
cd's in the cd player, hit shuffle, and voila! 4 and a half hours of
bliss ! maybe we should get snowstorms more often.....:)

yes, i really do!  (stranger things *have* happened)...

i was reading thru my back issues of gaychica magazines before i toss
them finally, and here's a compilation of what i've culled that may be
of interest to you guys-- late, but of interest nonetheless:

on michelle malone's _beneath the devil moon_:
"malone's breathy guitar melodies and earnest vocals ('i'm so fucking
lonely') remind one of early melissa (or a less whiny sheryl crow), but
malone is an artist in her own right."

on disappear fear's _seed in the sahara_:
"you either love or hate these light-rock folkies, but the ambiguously
butch cut 'boxers' alone may be worth the album purchase."

on cheryl wheeler's _mrs. pinocci's guitar_:
"she's a sexy, big girl with a unique blend of rockabilly, down-home
folk, yodeling, and americana complete with melodica, accordion, and
english horn.  wheeler is the queen of delightful ditties such as 'tv'
and 'is it peace or is it prozac?' (written en route to her
psychiatrist)."

(all 3 from _girlfriends_, july/august 1997)

on the indigo girls:
"having raised $300,000 touring the us for native american environmental
groups, the indigo girls recently went into the studio to record shaming
of the sun, their sixth album and most ambitious to date.  incorporating
cornet, bouzouki, hurdygurdy, mandolin, and good ole stringing guitars,
this is a collection that welds the personally passionate to the
political.  some tracks are stunning in their inventiveness-- 'shed your
skin', for instance, which combines a hip hop swagger with the
unnerving, brooding sound of the ulali, a native american vocal group--
while others feature the more familiar laid-back harmonies and country
rock melody they're famous for...slightly mawkish in places, but also
uplifting."
[from _diva_ (british lesbian magazine), june 97]

plop plop fizz fizz,
jill

p.s.-- i looked up "mawkish" in the dictionary and found it means
"sickly sentimental, weakly emotional."  please direct your grumbles to
diva@gaytimes.co.uk .  ;)

the line about yellow feet which has always intrigued me, was inspired, i have
heard, from a sleepover that amy went to at which she and a friend were
wearing yellow socks. (i had always thought it had to do with cowardice, while
my mother was convinced amy had been walking through a field of dandelions).
i'm not sure about the rest.

answers to why the chicken crossed the road...

pat buchanan:

to steal a job from a decent,
hardworking american.

louis farrakhan:

the road, you will see, represents the
black man. the chicken crossed the "black man"
in order to trample him and keep him down.

the bible:

and god came down from the heavens, and
he said unto the chicken, "thou shalt
cross the road." and the chicken crossed
the road, and there was much rejoicing.

colonel sanders:

i missed one?

l.a. police department:

give us five minutes with the chicken
and we'll find out.

richard m. nixon:

the chicken did not cross the road. i
repeat, the chicken did not cross the
road. i don't know any chickens. i
have never known any chickens.

dr. seuss:

did the chicken cross the road?
did he cross it with a toad?
yes! the chicken crossed the road,
but why it crossed, i've not been told!

ernest hemingway:

to die. in the rain.

martin luther king, jr.:
i envision a world where all chickens
will be free to cross roads without
having their motives called into question.

grandpa:
in my day, we didn't ask why the chicken
crossed the road. someone told us that
the chicken crossed the road, and that was
good enough for us.

aristotle:

it is the nature of chickens to cross the road.

karl marx:

it was an historical inevitability.

saddam hussein

this was an unprovoked act of rebellion
and we were quite justified in dropping
50 tons of nerve gas on it.

ronald reagan:

what chicken?

captain james t. kirk:

to boldly go where no chicken has gone before.

fox mulder:

you saw it cross the road with your own
eyes. how many more chickens have to
cross before you believe it?

machiavelli:

the point is that the chicken crossed
the road. who cares why?
the end of crossing the road justifies
whatever motive there was.

freud:

the fact that you are at all concerned
that the chicken crossed the road reveals
your underlying sexual insecurity.

bill gates:

i have just released chicken coop 98,
which will not only cross roads, but
will lay eggs, file your important
documents, and balance your check
book-and explorer is an inextricable
part of the operating system.

einstein:

did the chicken really cross the road or
did the road move beneath the chicken?

bill clinton:

i did not cross the road with that
chicken. however, i did ask vernon
jordan to find the chicken a job in
new york.

i went to the show on 12/27.

first thing is this:  i could not get a boot of the show b/c the night before
the show (at shawn mullins' show), i asked some friends of mine what they
thought about booting shows at the attic.  the response was a deafening 'no!'.
so, i do  not have a boot of the show with amy, danielle, and michelle (and
kristen), but i'm working on finding a copy.  i do know, however, that there
was at least one person booting the show.  so, don't think that there isn't a
boot floating around b/c there is, folks!!!!  we just got to find that
person...and you know who you are.  so, 'fess up!!

anyway, here's some tid-bits about the show.  in the line that morning, i
wasn't spunky or talkative, but it did talk to a woman from new orleans...she
attends agnes scott or emory...one of the other.  i also got to talking to a
guy from norcross (a city just north of decatur).  i was very impressed with
him.  he's only 17 years-old, and he told me that he just started liking
indigo girls a lot...but he really just wanted to see the local atlanta music
scene (which is michelle and danielle).  i myself am 24, and i'm totally
impressed by the younger people of my generation.  it ills me so much to hear
that mediocre crap about generation x....it pisses me off, i swear.

anyway, i got numbers to both shows.  it was hard to keep in my mind that i
had never seen amy perform live before.  i'm glad i waited, though, b/c it was
probably one of the most intimate shows she's done in a long time.  i'm glad i
didn't see her as indigo girls in dallas 2 years ago, or at the music midtown
fest in atlanta last year.  those crowds were impossible.  let me continue my
story of the night of 12/27, though....

i got 2 extra numbers b/c you never know who you might meet before shows at
the attic, and luckily i did meet two terrific people:  sean smith (a
performer of his own right) and his girlfriend.  sean and i exchanged ideas of
songwriting and how easy it comes sometimes and how damn hard it is other
times to filter out all the shit in the world in order to come up with a
special song.  i sat there with two of my other friends drinking beer and
talking with sean and his g-friend when our number was read aloud the
loudspeaker...i told myself, "okay, this is it, chee...you're going to see
what you'd been waiting for for close to 10 years."  in reality, though, i was
just nonchalant about it.  i was drinking..that about sums up the lack of
enthusiasm before the show.  but, while buying my ticket, i saw danielle come
out of the front door.  i have seen her before, so i just said, 'hey' to her.
she smiled and looked like she was thinking," should i know this person who
talks to me right now?"

on...on...on with the story.  i found a seat alongside the wall near the bar
and sat with sean and jason talking about songwriting and such...not really
paying attention to the stage.  then, jason poked my shoulder and jestered
toward the bar.  i saw amy and my heart dropped, but then i went on and kept
talking to sean.  then, danielle and michelle came out onto the stage...tuning
and such.  amy, then came out and tuned.  then they started playing.  the
first show was good, but i wasn't too impressed...actually, i was more
impressed with danielle's stage presense at first than of amy's or michelle's.
danielle sat in the center,,,between amy and michelle.
the first show ended and then the second show began after jason and i found
better seats...second row.  during the entire intermission, michelle
practiced, tuned, played, drank water..she stayed in her own little world on
stage perfecting her songs, i guess.  she really has come a long way, i think.
when she plays now, she is indeed in her own little world.  she's really good,
and she's a true musician.  danielle on the other hand talks about how her
songs might be all out of tune b/c her bridge is cracked and her strings are
old.  nonetheless, i identify with danielle much more, now.  during
intermission, danielle and amy were either at the bar or out at backstage.

i can't keep on going into this account of my first time seeing amy live, but
it was important to me retrospectively.  during the event however, i was just
jamming and drinking.  but, ron, wasn't it the song "sister" when in mid song,
amy said, "i can't get through this right now"?  b/c i remember hearing "boys
just laugh" all the way through and feeling disturbed...that song does disturb
me, though.  she had no problem with that song, however.  (i think i hate that
song b/c i can't identify with it....i have the opposite problem...i can't get
the girl, but the boys want me...and i don't really want them...).

after the concert, i wanted to meet amy so bad, but jason, sean, courtney and
i talked about jamming....so, jason, courtney and i went to the holiday inn
garage and jammed in the freazing a$$ cold...it was fun, though.   maybe some
other time, i'll find the words and courage to say something to amy.  i feel
like people bug her already, though.

so, that's it.  if you want more info, email me.

hey y'all,

just got back from cry cry cry who were amazing!  i'd so recommend
everyone going.  they were even great when both dar and lucy had
colds.

anyway, so there my friend and i are in the 3rd row and in the 1st row
there is some girl with a backwards indigo girls cap on!  and i was
going crazy and my friend was like calm yourself!  anyway we started
talking about our trip to atlanta that we are taking to visit colleges
(3 in georgia!) and one of the girls
(not the one with the hat) half turned and so i changed the subject.
i'm pretty shy about talking to strangers and for some reason i didn't
want to be talking about indigo girls.  oh well, some other time i'll
be more brave.

that's about it.

i believe you meant to say, "wishin my name was amy."
oh to be so close...to the goddess danielle...
unless you've seen the lovely ms. howle perform, you cannot truly
appreciate what an adorable soul she is.
problem is, most folks round this list only see her when she's playing
alongside (and being overshadowed by) amy ray.  which is a pity.

all you people who are snowed under, please remember to take lots of breaks
while shoveling snow. especially if you are not exactly the athletic type. i
heard on the radio that most of the fatalities recorded for this blizzard
have been people having heart attacks while shoveling. i'd hate to lose
anyone on this list.

wow! did we ever get a huge amount of snow yesterday. outside my front
door, there is about 26 inches or more.but, it resulted in me having a
very indigo afternoon. as my family was outside shoveling, my dogs and i
had the house to ourselves. that is a rare moment around here, so i
figured i would milk it for all it was worth. i put 5 different girls
cd's in the cd player, hit shuffle, and voila! 4 and a half hours of
bliss ! maybe we should get snowstorms more often.....:)

hello folks,

happy new year to all!  i've had the list turned off since before
christmas though so i don't know what's going on excuse me if you have
all showered each other with greetings already.  but i'm not enjoying
much this relatively indigoless winter break so i'm back again to
share in all your warmth.

anyway...i found the sweet relief ii cd at a used cd shop
yesterday...payed 8.95 for it and i have a feeling i paid way too much
for it used.  (that reminds me i meant to check cdnow and see what
they're selling it for)  it's a great album though, i'm enjoying it,
especially the girls, good to hear them do something different (sing
along to n*i*s on the dvd karaoke machine twice and you suddenly hate
it).  i felt the little pangs of guilt though as i was reading amy's
comments bout looking out for her own and thinking that nobody's gonna
get any money from me i bought it used.

also, i vaguely remember promising once to let y'all know when i put
up the second installment of the name that ig tune contest.  well,
i've done it, so come one, come all, and play the name that tune
contest.  this one is themed--there are "yeahs" from ten different
songs for you to identify.  the prize (tentatively) is a daemon gift
certificate.  you can find it at
http://www.geocities.com/sunsetstrip/frontrow/8979/special/contest.html

ok i think that's it.

so i secretly order jcs to give to my best bud and co-listee lesley
(hi lel).  and i'm such a good friend that even though it doesn't
arrive wrapped in cellophane, i don't preview it, even though i keep
reading and hearing things like, how fantastic it is, how hot amy is,
how great the cinematography is etc... i do however, tell lesley that
we're going to spend to hours 'opening' our xmas gifts.

so xmas comes and after opening her gift (which i've taken the liberty
of wrapping in duct tape--teehee) and lesley and i sprint down to her
basement to experience the cinematographic experience that has been
bequeathed upon us by the daemon gods and goddesses.  and maybe its
because i've heard so much and read so much and was a stage manager
school lighting directo and had the uncellophaned(sp?) video on my
shelf for so long and had such unbelievable expectations for jcs, but
i wasn't really that impressed. (leaping behind the flame retardent
shield that i've put up,pleasedon'thurtme
pleasesparemylife)

i've tried to rationalize this, but there's so things in the movie
that i just didn't get to.  like the dunkin' donut cup that amy was
holding. and (i'm almost embarassed to say it!) emily's costume, i
just didn't get that either.  and the filming... i understand the
artistic premise behind it, but i thought that the shaking of the
camera was just really irritating.  and i thought that the blocking,
choreography and lighting was really simplistic (but that's just the
stage techie in me being over-analytical, i know that)

granted, there were things that i really loved, amy as jesus (man that
womyn is awesome!)  and emily too! (despite her unfortunate costume-
imvho) and the musical score as well.

i'm not trying to make any enemies here.  maybe this has been
discussed before (i've only been on the list since sept) but i would
really love to hear other peoples opinions on this though.

songs that make me laugh:

1.  i laugh at "i wanna be your lover."  i think it is funny to think of some

doesn't matter because they don't talk very much anyway, but they make a lot

i got a kick out of this - like i said, it's a stretch, but as my
fellow obsessers will agree, when you work at it, you can find an ig
connection even in the most obscure of places!!!

i'm totally with you on this one, patricia. i actually kind of
liked the jerky cinematography effect, but it was way overused - i would
have liked to have just *watched* more of it.
and emily's costume is truly hideous. it's as though they went out
of their way to find something unflattering. my roommate, who's an art
history major, told me that she though that e's mm costume was designed
with manet in mind - apparently he did a whole series of eastern working
women and emily's costume hearkened back to that very strongly. not too
surprising from emily, if you think about it (my roommate also pegs the
line if lifeblood about the mirrors behind the bar as an allusion to
another manet painting... i'll tell you all which one it was when i
remember what it's called (: )

aaack! i have to speak up. geishas are not whores. they are women
trained from childhood in the arts of entertaining: dance, conversation,
music, tea ceremony, etc... they still exist. the place they are most
visible is in kyoto esp in the little streets of gion and in pontocho
which is a must for anyone visiting there. the world of geishas is truly
one of these things that is really hard for the casual westerner to get

thanks to monique for setting the record straight.  one of the first
things that i learned as an east asian studies major (yes, remember, i am
the grrrl majoring in japanese/east asian studies) was that geisha does
not equal prostitute.

the geisha is a japanese cultural icon.  geisha women know everything from
the tea ceremony (very hard to master) to how to write those beautiful
kanji calligraphy things.  geishas cater to the high socioeconomic class.
since these women are highly cultured, so are their clients.  they do not
sleep with their clients.  instead, they entertain them by doing things
that are highly valued in japanese culture.

so once again, these women are not whores.  they are highly trained and
very skillful in what they do.  the just add to the nihonron (japanese
essence) of japanese culture.

mata ne!  (later, in japanese)

had no idea what i had missed
until i subscribed to this lovely list

talk and praise for the girls galore
i heard these things and wanted more

concerts, interviews, and even boots
to me this list is such a hoot

strangers all sharing their blue girl bits
transforming themselves to my intimates

now i am so greatly assisted
having discovered that this list existed

and though our differences often show
we stand connected by our indigo

so thanks to emily and amy too
for painting our world this shade of blue

through a&e we stand united
with love they've let our worlds be lighted

we pledge to hold their teachings tight
and let only love be a reason to fight

we pledge to practice their loving ways
and keep our hearts open through all our days

i thank you all for being so dashing
for daring to love and sharing this passion

i do love amy and i do love emily
and i feel at home in my new blue family

if what my roommate told me is correct (and if i'm remembering it
correctly - this was last spring we're talking about) manet did do a
series of paintings of japanese prostitutes (who are *not* geishas) and it
is to those paintings that emily's costume alludes.

artistic premise behind it, but i thought that the shaking of the

choreography and lighting was really simplistic (but that's just the
stage techie in me being over-analytical, i know that) >>

as a theatre professional, i have to agree that there are many elements to
quibble with in the production.  however, if you view it as a concert rather
than as a theatrical production and keep in mind the limited rehearsal time
(was it one day!!?!), as well as the purpose behind the revival (a response to
random gun violence after michael lorant was shot), it stands as a pretty
awesome achievement.  i think that many of the anachronistic elements are fun
and the candelabra torches are gorgeous.  but i have to admit that i think
emily's costume is a terrible choice.  geisha, maybe?  doesn't extend or
explain or amplify the jesus/mary relationship for me.  and it made her look
terrible.  but amy as jesus was remarkable, though it was definitely a rock
star performance and not an acting job.

at one of the honor concerts this fall, amy came out into the audience to
collect the political action cards and people were grabbing onto her and
keeping her from moving on exactly the way jesus' followers were grabbing in
the concert, and in every other version of jcs i've ever seen.  jesus as rock
star is a great analogy.

ok, i've rambled enough.

happy new year, y'all!

mom of suspect in gay slaying dead

mom of suspect in gay slaying dead
laramie, wyo. (ap) _ the mother of one of the men suspected of
killing gay university of wyoming student matthew shepard was found
dead on a road outside town and authorities were treating the case
as a possible homicide.
the body of cindy thompson dixon, 40, of laramie was found near
a road about five miles north of laramie on sunday, albany county
coroner julie heggie said.
dixon was the mother of russell henderson, 21, who is currently
in jail awaiting trial in the beating death of shepard.
the woman's death appeared suspicious and investigators were
approaching the case as a homicide, sheriff's lt. bob volen told
the denver post.
sheriff jim pond said the body was found sunday morning,
''lying
just off the road.'' she had not been reported missing.
preliminary results from an autopsy revealed the cause of death
as hypothermia, pond said. the coroner said a final ruling would
not be made until toxicology tests were completed.
ms. dixon's husband, charles e. dixon, was scheduled to make a
court appearance today on a charge of battery on a household
member. no details were available late monday from the court clerk.
prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against henderson and
aaron mckinney, 21. the two are charged with first-degree murder,
kidnapping and aggravated robbery in shepard's death.
the two are accused of beating and robbing shepard on oct. 7
and
tying him to a split-rail fence outside laramie. shepard, 21,
suffered 18 blows to the head and died five days after the attack.
testimony at a november hearing indicated he may have been
targeted because he was gay. the attack brought condemnation from
president clinton and calls for tougher hate-crime laws.
henderson and mckinney are scheduled to go on trial later this
year.

hey yall, sorry for the b/w.

i'm still digging through my stuff trying to get rid of all the stuff
that isn't essential to me.  i figure this stuff might interest someone
on the list.  so, i've got two michelle malone promos.  the first is "my
green thumb".  orange cover, copyright 1997.  it's been opened, but never
been played.  velvel labe, vel-cdpro 013.

the second is a promo for "big black bag" and the cover says "big black
bag and drag the river".  pink cover, copyright 1990....however this is
released on the arista label, not velvel.  ascd-2043.  it's got two
tracks:  "big black bag" and the second track is a 15 minute
conversation/interview with lenny kaye (guitar player for patti smith).
truth in advertising:  the cover and back have a little water
damage....they look fine, just wrinkled.

finally, a full length album promo for ferron's album "still riot".
copyright 1996, warner bros., 2-46292-a.  played only once.

if you're interested, let me know.  l'sly

while i was in ohio for christmas i found two copies of complicated
girls at my favorite record store.  i only bought one, but i can have my
sister check and see if they've still got the other (which they probably
do, it was only a week ago) if anyone's interested.  it was about $23
with tax and then there would be shiping.  that is, if i can get a copy.

email me privately if you're interested or would just like a copy of
mine.

p.s. for anyone in nw ohio, finders (in findlay and bowling green) has
started carrying cd bootlegs in the past year or so.  check 'em out
anyway, it's a cool store!

hi everyone-

first off, song that makes me laugh:  have you guys heard the version of
high horse from atlanta pride?  amy doesn't even remember the song, she's
totally off-tune,and just wailin away at whatever note strikes her fancy.
it's hysterical!

second, a new theme (something i've been pondering...  oh no, what does that
say about me?):  if you were to make an ig tape for the person you love
most, what would be on it?

for the person you hate most?

mine:
love:
strange fire (this is a message, a message of love)
fugitive (and i'd give my last breath to keep her alive)
don't give up on me baby
mystery (equal partners...)
cedar tree (the best we ever had)
the wood song (hard up against change)
keeper of my heart (i will be the reaper, if you will be the keeper)
dead man's hill, live from 1200 curfews (because it's soooo sexy!)
everything in its own time (keep it in your heart like a stone)
you and me of the 10k wars (a moment of peace is worth every war behind us)
the water is wide (and both shall row, my love and i)

hate:
walk away (obvious) (i'm a pillar of salt...)
cut it out (how obvious is that?) (give me something good to remember)
down by the river (i shot my baby)
i don't wanna know (because i really just don't)
left me a fool (you remind me of shallot)
free at last (free of the past)
no way to treat a friend (that ain't no way to treat a friend)
tried to be true, live from botby (i bought my love a hunger...)
i don't wanna talk about it (you've probably been crying forever, and the
stars...)
you left it up to me (with spiteful eyes you burned for my grace), (there's
nothing there)
center stage (the higher the leap, the harder the fall)
three hits (and the last one sings in me)
romeo and juliet (romeo...  i used to have a thing with him...)

man, have i been burned!  i'd hate to receive this tape from myself!

i was at the open mic night at free times cafe in toronto last night, and
the host opened up with closer to fine. she had a decent voice, and played
pleasantly, but it took my girlfriend to identify what was strange: she was
singing it as if it was an ani difranco song- ani's vocal nuances. i also
noticed that she was singing amy's part on much of it, but an octave high.
it sounded bizarre.

x-to:         cebenwel@apollogrp.edu
mime-version: 1.0
content-type: text/plain

whoa, whoa, whoa.
first off, we do not flame like this.  much less *publicly.*  a point of
contention is one thing; if you have a problem with somebody's opinion,
then take it to them privately.  i'm responding to this to the whole
list because i'm thinking your response was one held by others as well.
i think a little explanation is in order.
an entirely different point is the line between someone's *opinion*, and
that person entirely.  you were making some rather nasty insults on
ron's character there.  you don't like his opinion; i'm not quite seeing
why this means you don't like *him* as a person (when you've never even
um *met* him).

>how arrogant! "statements like 'i always knew i was different but i
didn't
>know what it was until later on in life' are reconstructive
>rationalizations." no, ron, they might be retrospective, but they are
not
>reconstructed.
he was not being arrogant.  he was trying to take an objective,
analytical viewpoint of the whole issue.  if you remember correctly, he
was telling us what he'd learned in studying *psychology*.  psychology,
which prides itself on its empiricism (factual, tangible, testable
things) and reliability, and takes extreme precautions to leave nothing
up to chance or error.  this is something very far from your viewpoint,
which, it seems to me, is a more humanist approach.
and since you've taken such offense to it, let me tell you that a
"retrospective reconstruction" is when one attempts, through
retrospection, to find a cohesive explanation or thread (reconstruction)
running through their past, previously-unanalyzed behavior.
example:  you take two tests.  you score higher on the second test.  a
retrospective reconstruction that might explain this could be:  'having
already taken the first test, i was not so apprehensive for the second
one, which is why i scored higher on the second one.'  get it?  you
don't know for *sure*, but you've thought about the situation and you
think you have a rationalization (logical explanation) for the outcome.
so when ron used that phrase, he was by no means saying that you've made
up a little half-true story in your head.  he was using *terminology*.

>its pompous tone ("personal anecdotes aren't proof of anything
>except that person's perception and interpretation of events." -- duh),
this was not pomposity, but rather empiricism.
and as a student of psychology for quite a few years now, i can tell you
that he is absolutely scientifically and empirically sound in his
statement. a major psychological theorist (adler maybe?) proposed the
widely-held belief that there is *no fixed reality*.  meaning *your*
reality is not *my* reality.  two people can experience the very same
situation and both see something entirely different.  if you and i both
watch a car crash and then we're asked to give police statements, your
statement will differ from mine.  *your* personal anecdote (version of
what happened) will be *your* perception and interpretation of events
(*your* reality).  this is not pomposity, this is just basic common
sense.
and, continuing with this example, your personal anecdote is not *proof*
of anything.  well, not *empirical* proof; and in the psychology
community, only empirical proof counts.  your statement is neither
objective nor testable nor tangible, and your interpretation of the
situation could be affected by a myriad of things: personal biases,
wants, physical condition, etc.
so, to *empirically* apply this to our sexuality conversation:  if
someone was struggling with their sexuality and wanted some kind of
definition of themselves that they could grasp onto (and this is human
nature, humans seek categorization and definition, we interpret our
world through, among other things, opposites and pairs), they could
start looking at their past behavior and say, "look!  right there!  you
see that?--- that time in second grade when i really wanted to be gym
partners with that girl?  that shows that i am *gay*!"  is this
anecdote-based retrospective reconstruction scientifically testable? no.
is it empirical? no.  in the psychological community, this would not
even count, because there are *so* many interfering things (extraneous
variables) that could be affecting your conclusion.  but we all do it,
just the same.  i know; i myself did it.

>"scientific" pronouncements, breaking down issues of human attachment
into
>bits of stimulus-response, cause-effect, prediction-result
actually, i believe he was attempting to offer up some, again,
*empirical* explanations.  he was telling us what researchers and
scientists, namely, psychologists, have come up with in their studies of
orientation.  but as is evidenced by your mockery ("scientific"
pronouncements) of psychological empiricism, you probably don't care
about that.

>then ron oh-so-smugly describes his attitude toward others:
>" i have very contradictory feelings towards people, but i don't worry
about
>which feeling i'm 'supposed to' have about someone.  i just feel what i
feel
>and let it be."
you're obviously deeply wanting to see the worst in ron.  i don't see
this statement as being "oh-so-smug" at all.  every scientist has this
problem-- if the research contradicts your gut feeling, what do you go
with?  if your research says, logically and empirically and
statistically and scientifically speaking, there cannot be a god, what
do you do if you happen to believe there *is* a god?  if research says
one thing about sexuality, what do you do if this isn't what you believe
to be true deep inside?  that's all.  ron is not spawn of satan.  he's
just tellin' the facts.

rrar.

rick has apparently made off with quite a bit of merchandise (including

stack of rare bootleg cds he was supposed to be burning for folks) that
he got from the indigohioans.

someone recently expressed shock that michael lorant had been shot.  so,
here's the scoop:

copyright 1991 the atlanta constitution
the atlanta journal and constitution

november 22, 1991

section: preview; section d; page 04

length: 1350 words

headline: night beat

byline: by russ devault; fish drummer back in swim of things

body: drummer michael lorant, who was shot in the side by a robber oct. 15,
will be back at his kit when the eclectic big fish ensemble plays tonight
at the point.

he's obviously better physically - and financially, thanks to last
weekend's benefit by local musicians that netted $ 2,000 for his uninsured
medical expenses. "i don't know if i'm powerful enough yet for solos," says
mr. lorant, also an accordionist, clarinetist and vocalist for the atlanta
group. "but i've been practicing this week and things have gone ok."

the incident was as off-the-wall as some of the tunes created by the
versatile big fish quintet, mr. lorant says. "my girlfriend, sheila doyle,
who's also in the band, and i were walking up euclid avenue about midnight
when three guys came running up mumbling about a robbery. a guy waved a gun
at my head and then shot me in the side.  "it was over in 15 or 20
seconds," mr. lorant says. "i was lucky, because it was senseless - a
really unorganized crime. but the doctors removed the bullet, the guys are
in jail and i'm back in the band."

big fish, which isn't averse to mixing musical styles, had virtually
completed work on an album tentatively titled "fieldtrip" when mr. lorant
was wounded. "we're shopping it to try to get a record deal," he says. "if
we don't find one by january, we'll probably release it on our own sardine
records label."

hey folks,

have you seen this?  it's an article on kate (with nice pics too), but
there is some igc here too.

http://www.drummergirl.com/home/katelj.htm

kate for a day
by kristina feliciano

she was the original drummer for the beastie boys and has commanded
the kit for luscious jackson from the band's beginning. but don't
expect kate schellenbach to take success for granted. world tours, gap
ads, and soundtracks aside, she's amazed by what an amazing year she's
had: playing drums for blondie (at debbie harry's request), taking
part in the suffragette sessions tour (at indigo girl amy ray's
request)...meanwhile, luscious are working on their fourth album, due
out in may 1999. on a brisk november day, she stepped outside the
whirlwind and into a cozy diner to talk to drummergirl. our
conclusion? it's great to be kate.

<snip>

the year in review, part 1: the suffragette sessions tour

this year, actually, i've done a lot of great projects ... it's been a
dream come true for me, musically. i don't know what that means.
(laughs) i guess i have to come up with new dreams. [the lilith fair]
was just great because everyone was really open and everyone had their
dressing room doors open ... it was like summer camp or something ... i
ended up hanging out and talking to amy [ray of the indigo girls].
they were about to start up touring again, i guess, ... she was...talking
about [if luscious jackson wanted to tour with them] ... we had just
had this kind of tortuous tour, and we were over it. and she was like,
"don't you play in your time off? we were, like, burnt out at that
point ... and the more i talked to amy the more i felt like, god,
they're really in this ... she's like, "we play all the time when we're
off." and ... i started feeling really lame. so something about the
conversation made me think, well, you know what? i should really
examine my attitude ... and a month or two later amy called me and said,
"we're putting together this tour. we don't want to do a typical club
tour. we want to put together a bunch of female musicians playing each
other's stuff." originally, it was going to be called the rolling
thunder pussy tour. it's based on this bob dylan tour called the
rolling thunder review ... she was like, "we think you would be a
really good drummer, we'd really like you to do it" ... i was like,
"okay, here's my opportunity to like get back [into playing]." ... and
the more people that came aboard the more and more excited i got about
it. ... i felt like it was a good way to be challenged musically,
because if you play the same songs every day, ... your level of playing
gets lower and lower ... there were ten musicians on the tour. everyone
picks like three or four songs to learn. we each have tapes of these
songs. we have three days to rehearse them. it was insane, it was
great ... it was one of the funnest things i did. that, and we got to
play lilith fair.

<snip>
-----

(hmmm...funnest...is that a word?)

here's to amy asking lj to tour with them again this summer and making
a stop in hawaii!

i don't usually pass these on, but it's for a good cause.

please distribute.

katherine linton, (former senior producer and current host of in the
life, pbs' national newsmagazine on gay and lesbian issues,) and kate
davis, (award winning producer, who's most recent documentary
"transgender revolution" aired on a&e and was nominated for a glaad
award,) are co-producing an hour documentary on anti-gay violence.
the  program will air as part of a&e's "investigative reports" series.

this film will take a serious look into the rise of hate crimes
against gay people nationwide, a trend which we believe is little known
or
understood by the general public.  we are now in the fortunate
position of exploring this issue in depth for a mainstream audience on
primetime television.

we will look at many cases of anti-gay violence around the country
including a focus on schools and the military.  currently, we have
many stories on violence against gay men, yet after two weeks of solid
inquiry and pursuit, have been unable to locate a single incident
against lesbians, that occurred within the last two years, in which
the  women are willing to speak on camera, (or a case where a family
member, lover or friend will speak for them if they are unable.)

if anyone who recieves this email knows of a case or was involved
in an anti-lesbian attack and is willing to speak with us on camera,
please
contact me via email at katherinelinton@hotmail.com.

thank you for the time with this request.

sincerely,
katherine linton

iii) cat power are playing at the harbourside brasserie

secure yourself

ghost
mystery
the wood song
welcome me
everything in its own time
burn all the letters
(i know...my girlfriend told me that several of those seemed wierd to her too.

out of non-ig songs:
feeling love by paula cole
mary by sarah
come on come on by mary chapin-carpenter
oh what a thrill by the mavericks
or something stupid by the mavericks
i don't really know why i picked those either...i guess it would probably be

ok,
been reading all the stuff about jcs and i got to add my two cents worth...

1#....i think that amy did a great job playing jesus...lets remember that
yes, it was a rock opera, so even if you cant get past the rock star not an
actress thingy, look into her eyes as she sings, she is feeling it, she is
there and for me it really correlated to what the author was trying to
portray.....

2# yes i have the original too...some things were better, but come on guys
they did a great job and the talent in this production was amazing kelly
hogan and michael lorent, gerald mchugh.....come on it was great i got a
chance to see some really great performers that i would have never
heard....plus i liked the special effects....

3# the only prob i had with the filming was that i would like to have seen
the whole thing you know, the other people around on the stage......but then
again i would like to see it in person.....oh if only they would do another
tour of it.....

4# and yes it was a great reflection of christ's life and that of a star
like ig

and 5# no, i did not like emily's costume...i liked the second one better
but the first was a bit much..oh well.....we cant have everything now can
we......but then again i kinda got it if you watch the original one you
might see the correlation.....(i know big ol 50 cent word thrown in there)

oh well there it is....just my opinions.....

i think...for the person i love the most, off the top of my head and i
can't remember all their songs, so i might add some later:

crazy game ('cause if you're ever believing i'm thinking of leaving...')
closer to fine ('...take my life less seriously')
mystery (too many lines to list)
get out the map ('i'm gonna love you good and strong...')
power of two (duh)
everything in its own time (i sometimes sing her to sleep)

hmm...i'll have to think some more.

see?  i told you that chicky was one to hear.
go here and read about chan marshall, the voice behind cat power:
http://web.cln.com/archives/atlanta/newsstand/122698/v_musicb.htm

and here's a review i found in the zine _bitch_:
"after making three albums full of brittle, spare electro-folk and hank
williams-meets-mecca-normal lyricism, chan marshall decided to quit the
music business.  despite possessing one of themost absorbing vocal
styles around-- she sings as though she's breathing her words in rather
than pushing them out-- she was disgruntled with new york's indie fast
track, which tends to be slightly more appreciative of boys in tight
pants than freaky transplanted southerners with tendencies toward stage
fright.  marshall's definition of quitting, thankfully, doesn't appear
to match the dictionary's, and she retreated to australia to record
_moon pix_ with dirty three musicians jim white and mick turner.  with
little more than meandering finger-picked guitar to buttress the
ghostly, pain-splintered vocals on songs like "back of your head," "no
sense," and the narcotic country-waltzy "metal heart," it's a simple--
in the best sense of the word-- and beautiful record.  sparing sonic
touches make it even more so, like the free-jazz flute that threads
through "he turns down" and the thunderstorm that fills the background
of "say."  and when marshall's voice slowly climbs to a shivery wail, as
it does on "moonshiner," it makes you wish everyone could quit their job
so gorgeously."

aaaaaaagggggghhhhhhhh she is so good i can't stand it.
sherlyn, boot that show, please??

jill

my god what would the community think?
you are so beautiful, you are so beautiful.
-chan marshall

indiglows,
i finally got the pete seeger tribute album, "where have all the flowers
gone?" some of the songs are overproduced, but there are quite a few gems,
including, i'm happy to say, "letter to eve" performed by the girls. don't
get me wrong, i love pete, but this is one of those songs which hits me
harder when sung by strong women, like richard shindell's "ballad of mary
magdalen" gets even better when dar sings it. other excellent songs on
this album are john gorka's "water is wide," ani's "my name is lisa
kalvelege" (of course), sweet honey in the rock's "step by step," greg
brown's "sailing down my golden river," odetta's "1 grain of sand," and
holly near's "quiet early morning."

a while ago, tara wrote

if anyone wants a copy of the entire poem/rap from which this is taken,
i'll email it to you. if anyone happens to want my entire book of poetry,
i'll be sending out more of them once i get back to school, & you can
email me for details. :)

so in case you missed it (like i did), it does air 4 more times.

i need to tell someone about this - i think it is so funny because the
person who said it was so totally serious!  she really thought these
were the correct lyrics, but i think it is one of those things where you
had to be there, or else it is not at all funny.  anyway, "letter to
eve" was playing in the car tapedeck.  i was giving a friend a ride
somewhere and she, in all seriousness, during this part - pacem in
terris, mir, shanti, salaam, hey wa -

sings "pass out on the terrace and have a salami on rye"

i was hysterical.
