        hi folks,

before this gets totally out of control <g>...there is no ig beanie baby.
there is an ig ski hat...as has already been mentioned...which was on sale
through the fan club.  it was indigo colored (of course) with an orange
patch with black lettering.

        hi folks...

i hope everyone is having a very happy new year!        just a few things i've
been a bit lax in mentioning...

sigs:  please remember to keep your sigs short!  4 - 6 lines would be
appreciated.

"me too" posts:  please try to cut down on the me too posts.  if you want
to respond, please do so privately.

quoting previous posts:  remember to delete unnecessary text when
reposting material to the list.

quoting from other lists:  several listees have emailed me with the
concern that what they posted on other lists are then being reproduced
here.  keep in mind that what is posted in a listserv or newsgroup forum is
public record.  as always, posting private email is never acceptable.

mime encoding:  do not use mime encoding in your posts.  many listees are
unable to to read mime format and they get a long post filled with sybmols
which is very aggravating.

spam, chain letters, etc:  these have never been welcome on the list.  if
you would like to share this type of thing with the list community, please
post a brief description to the list and ask for private inquires.

amy and her girlfriend:  please remember that we do not discuss the girls
private lives on the list. this includes wishful thinking as well.

sorry to drop all the above on y'all at once!  i'll try to pop on every
week or so...to avoid a lengthy post again.  thanks for all your patience
over the past few months!

hi all,

our last la list meeting was great!  it was java and me jamming on some
of our favorite songs.  so it wasn't a huge turnout.  i still had a good
time.  she wants to do it again, and so do i! so, if anyone from la is
out there lurking, email me and we'll plan again.  you don't have to be
able to play anything or even sing.  just be enthusiastic!

on a happier note, today is my gf's birthday and i surprised her at work

dear dar & indigo pple,
since there has been some talk on all of these lists about ani's newest
album, up^6, i'd like to invite anyone who isn't already there to join the
little cyber castle, which is an email discussion group run by myself &
another fine courtier named emily. anything you want to say about ani's
music & message is welcome- it's a pretty accepting, laid-back, @ small
baby of a list. come add your magic!
peace, arjuna

np ani's upupupupupup... i just put "tiz of thee" on repeat most of the
time, with appearances by "virtue," "come away," "jukebox," the title
song, and "trickle down," but i'm sure the rest of the album will grow on
me...

never reaching the rows of "us's"  at any ig shows, i think i stood in the
crowd ga-ga
and connected to them to more emily-written lyrics.  never saw the 'ol burning
cat trick live and in person, and for the life of me, i still see chickenmen
in my nightmares.  so hearing what you say, though, i nod my head at amy in
awe of the power chords, but on my way to let emily sing to me from the right
side of the stage.

hi everyone..

ya know.. i've been thinking a lot about what the curve of my life has brought
to me. it's amazing to look back and have so many wonderful things to
reminisce about. in no small part, amy and emily have added to the luster i
call my life.

i'm famous for saying "life altering experience," after ever concert or
performance, but it's true.. being present when an artist stands up and gives
us all their gift, it can be awe inspiring.

just a few thoughts about this thread. i was at the show. i stood right under
amy's feet, about 3 feet away from me. her mandolin was setting on a speaker,
i could see every character mark and count the tiny frets. i could have
touched the tuning pegs.

my primary mission at any performance is to soak in every ounce of energy
given from the stage. i overdosed at that show.

i've been close to the stage many times. i had seen her perform "cut it out"
at least 4 other times prior to the gltf show. for that night, amy's version
of "cut it out" was almost painful. i don't know what brought that level of
emotion from her soul, but the outcome was bloody and beaten. as she segued
into "wish you were here" there was a moment of quiet; like the quite before a
storm really blows hard. it was eire. i remember every second. the number of
veins distended on her neck. the color of her cheeks. the white part of her
nailbed on the fretboard. the weight of the guitar transferred though the
guitar strap to her shoulder. the one legged kick she gets at critical moments
in the lyrics. the spit that flew through the air and landed on my arm. her
eyes closed tightly, refusing to open as if she were reliving painful moments.
the broken voice "oh baby" repeated at the end of the song. amy ceased being
amy, she became a raw nerve exposed.

i will never be the same. i have a new understanding for what really "feeling"
is. i urge all of you who don't have a copy of the boot to find it.. seek it
out.. it is important. it could be a "life altering experience" for you.

ooh, it was my first ig dream in over a year or something....
um...it was sorta weird...they were sitting at a long table w/ a bunch
of other people...and i think we were on a boat....
they were singing midnight train to georgia....
no guitars though...and near the end, amy got up and was not looking
"like a fish out of water."  she started looking like a diva or
somehting...and then emily stood up and then they finished and gave a
nice sisterly hug to each other....
not too exciting, i know....
but the amy diva thing and the hug was funny too...it was a "aww, i

i can;t explain it, buit it was still weird....

now if i only knew what i was doing. %-}  rest assured, we've got experts
working on it and advising me as we speak.  think of cate blanchett in
"elizabeth" but without the fierce clothes.  that's my next project . . .
anybody got any faux ermine lying around for a young queen? lemme pipe down
before i scare the straight boys :)

ok lovelies.  this means that we can bypass this rowdy, messy, first 10 to get
back to me by 10am sunday business.  so don't flood the royal mailbox with
common screechings for the boot.  i've rallied the branches, alerted them to
their higher calling and am awaiting des conseilles from somebody who i think
might be the chickenman (are you that tony, tony?).

and just in case anybody's interested, the consensus of those who have gotten
back to me thus far, eager freaks included :), is that the divine ms. em is a
strawberry blonde.

stay tuned loyal peeps.

thought you might like this ... kinda puts things in perspective, doesn't it?
this was shared on trainers' listserv ...

the only other thing i'd include is "the whole world as 100 people" info
that was in a newsletter from the patch place.  i like the computer
reference - makes us, as girl scouts, really think in global terms.

this is for a pc... not sure how things would change with your mac

for streaming real audio you need to download an application called 'x-file
get' i think www.download.com has it...
this will let you save the show as a file onto your hard disc...

then you need to convert your real audio to a .wav file with an application
called ra2wav

and then use a .wav editor such as cool edit or whatever you have to split
the one big .wav file into the smaller ones you want to keep...

and that's basically it...

hello everyone

after reading rebecca's welcoming message to jason i decided i would
introduce myself.  i joined this wonderful and crazy list about a month
and a half ago, although i was away from it for about three weeks in the
middle.

i am a senior at emory university, majoring in anthropology and human
biology.  i don't really have solid plans for my life after graduation in
may.  any suggestions/ideas?  one job i think i would really enjoy is as a
photographer/writer for national gepgraphic.  i love to travel,
experience new cultures and see all the beauty of the earth.

as for my love of the girls, i can't really pinpoint an exact time when it
started.  my first concert was in tampa, fl, during the swamp ophelia
tour.  it was just amy, emily, and their guitars, and it was beautiful.
since then i've been to three concerts and seen amy on her own once.
today, their music is an important part of my life. it is hard to listen
to a song and not be reminded of a family member or a friend, or a past
experience.  i always remember when my sister jennifer said to me, "when
i'm listening to their cd and ghost comes on, i just fall onto my bed and
can't really move.  it's so overwhelming, it completely takes me over."

since i am about to finish school and my life is filled with so many
possibilities, things can be very confusing sometimes.  i am always
reminding myself to listen to my heart and my soul and live my life
with passion.  you know, find/create the career and life path that will
make me happy and fulfilled, not one that is necessarily easy or
available.  of course, the music of ig helps me do this.  they seem like
such wise women, women who have been around forever, listening, watching,
contemplating, understanding it all.  these experiences and
lessons shine through in their lyrics.  when i get upset or confused i
can listen to their music and it makes me feel a little lighter, a
little more confident in the world and in myself.

so, that's a bit about me and them, them and me.  oh, one more thing.  i'm
happy to be a part of this list.  in november, while i was standing
in line at eddie's attic to see amy, beth, rose, and danielle, a woman in
line next to me said something to the effect of: "when i find out that
someone likes the music of ig, i just know they have a good heart."  that
about sums it all up. (unfortunately i can't remember her name or i would
give her the credit.  maybe she's a part of this list..?).

for my last bit...i have just begun my ig boot collection, thanks to
sheryl.  there has been talk lately about a few that seem to be staples,
such as complicated girls, problem child, and the emotion-charged (well,
they are all full of emotion i'm sure) 9:30 club.  i don't think i
have any of these (or do i sheryl?).  would anyone out there be willing to
make me copies?  just email me and we can discuss the specifics.  thanks
very much.

take care all,
lisa

oh my god!
hi neil! (gotta email ya privately - my music collection has not been the
same since i got that danny wilson (the trio) live tape...it's really
aswesome...)

i can never get xfileget  to retrieve the whole file (believe me - there are
several kcrw b'casts i want to burn...)

another alternative (a little longer to do - you probably will be
introducing some hiss to the audio - but listen to the show through real
audio - set a boombox or stereo up to take the input of your audio card -
record it to tape then replay it into your computer as a wav file - you can
sometimes adjust equalization on the radio to make up for the generational
loss.

i realize this is a bit late, but i felt a need to add to the discussion. it
is truely amazing to me how both of the "girls" are able to address such
intensely personal experiences in such a way that reaches into the listeners
gut and wrenches out an equally emotional response. i know there are times i
am equally drained and invigorated by their music. how do they do that? emily
seems to be able to maintain a distance and balance in her work that gives
hope that we too can master the fine art of balancing in a world of topsy
turvey. not amy!!! she is the one who throws her entire being into whatever
cause she has devoted her limited time and boundless energy  into. it shows in
her live performances and her insistance during the spitfire spoken word tour
that a round table discussion be included on both topics (gay rights and the
zapatista's in mexico) in which she was the "celebrity speaker". i was a
"fortunate one" able to attend the one in gainsville fl. where she and cecilca
rodriguez spoke on the zapatista movement. by the time we got to the round
table portion of the night, it was around midnight. they were both obviously
exhausted, but they insisted that we be given time for them to directly answer
any questions we had. it was amazing to be only three feet from amy and be
able to see her on a personal level address one of her passions. as they
closed, she mentioned she had to drive back to atlanta that night. that would
have put them arriving somewhere around dawn. i admit, i was concerned about
these two incredible women on the road all night when exhausted, but they made
it! passion, single-minded determination,  and devotion to truth are, in my
opinion, what makes her so incredible, not to mention talent. thanks for
listening to my ramblings.

yep, amy wears shorts.  you can catch her  beautiful lower extremities in the
watershed (singing world falls) and live at the uptown lounge
(closing) videos.  also see pics from the new orleans jazz fest at
www.stwing.upenn.edu/~abstein/colormeindigo site.  she also wore shorts at the
'93 newport fest, but i can't remember the site name right now--will have to
search around and let you know--a couple of my absolute favorite pics of her.

none of us have ever been involved with anything of the

come up with diffenent topics--and then teams-- to work
on specific highschool/female related issues (eating disorders,
date rape...)
if anyone has any other ideas...(someone suggested this
was a good place to ask) any thoughts would be
greatly appreciated

thanks in advance

thanks for all your interest, but i think the last of the list shirts have

*slight* possibility some of the shirts i have won't be claimed, at which
point i'll send out yet another email. :)

on the topic of amy's legs - didn't she also pose in a dress (short) in
curve magazine (then deneuve)? she's sitting, but you can kind of see her
legs... :)

to babble on a bit longer, i watched "watershed" for the first time last
night. wow. the video for "least complicated" was one of the neatest
concepts i've ever seen - a nice fusion of musical theory (the chords &
instruments) and lyrics (flashing on the screen). i was impressed!

amy, whose good friend dave had a dream about her making out with scully

above you will find the state i'm in right now.   forgive me for not
responding about the boot of the 27th.  i was in the process of finding that
boot (b/c i couldn't boot it myself).  however i use past tense b/c right now
my life is shitty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
so, please forgive me about getting y'all's hopes up about the 12/27 boot.  i
will find it, but right now i can't.

i am suffering right now from a car wreck.  i had put all of my money in my
car, all of my emotions, almost all of my time and now my saab is totaled.  i
was so in love with that car.  my next car is going to be a piece of shit.
there's no need for a great car and i will not waste my freaking energy and
money on a piece of metal anymore!  what's worse is that i have no money now.
it sucks to be young, poor, and single, but i do have my education and my
career (and my seagull).  but, this is the lowest i've ever been.  please
forgive me for being lengthy with this.....i'm just really depressed.  anybody
have some advice or techniques they have to get over depression....will y'all
share?

hopefully, y'all will understand my lack of the boot, too.

however, if anybody finds a boot by themselves, tell me....if anyone knows a
gril named courtney from chicago, ask her.

.  the lantern (ohio state university) commentary: gay awareness week
glorifies perversity  - "hetero is betero"  this one could use some
responses!
the lantern, january 22, 1999
ohio state university, 242 w. 18th ave. , columbus, oh 43210
(e-mail: lantern@osu.edu ) ( http://www.thelantern.com/ )
commentary
gay awareness week glorifies perversity
chris alexander
lantern columnist

gay awareness week is here. the week is a frontal assault on the
"ignorance" and "bigotry" of the masses against homosexuality.
as we "celebrate diversity," the weapons of war will be emotion and
rhetoric. the media will spin forth tales of how, by not accepting
homosexuality, we condone the beating and murder of gays. the media will
cry out for unnecessary (and perhaps unconstitutional) hate crime laws.
the masses will be told that they must renounce their homophobia. the
word homophobia will be used to belittle people that don't approve of
homosexuality. they don't call the disapproval of child molesters
pedophilephobia.
the hate crime laws endorsed by many are a prime example of pro-gay
propaganda. why should it matter if someone is killed over their
sexuality
or over their wallet? a human life is a human life. why should certain
groups have special protection?
these laws will have many defendants put in double jeopardy, a
violation of the 5th amendment. for example: let's say bruce, a
homosexual, gets assaulted in a alley with a lead pipe. chuck is
arrested
by police as the only subject. first, chuck will be brought up on
charges
of assault. if, through lack of evidence, he is acquitted, the courts
could then charge him for committing a hate crime. chuck has been tried
for the exacted same crime twice, which is double jeopardy.
we saw this with the rodney king officers and o.j. simpson. the
government will press for a second trial, depending on the public's
reaction to the first. the jury in chuck's second trial might put forth
a
guilty verdict in hopes of averting a large gay riot (imagine flower
shops
being set on fire, the u.s. flag being torn down, a rainbow flag being
hoisted in it's place, heterosexuals being pulled out of their
semi-trucks
and beaten, a la reginald denny).
the pro-gay mock and ridicule the religious, calling their thinking
backward and close-minded. god forbid (pun not intended) that someone
doesn't embrace an act with open arms when he believes an entity more
powerful than b- gala, the dnc and barney frank will send him to eternal
damnation for it. why is it bigoted to find something wrong with
homosexuality?
if someone can't accept, on moral grounds, the concept of stealing,
that doesn't make him a bigot against kleptomaniacs. with homosexuality,
what someone is and what they do are pretty much one and the same. it's
the difference between "i can't tolerate the french, they all stink" and
"i can't tolerate rapists, they all rape." one statement is based on
stereotypes, one isn't.
i really don't understand the concept of "gay pride." studies show
that homosexuality begins in the womb, making homosexuality, in
actuality,
a birth defect. how can anyone be proud of a birth defect? i understand
the pride in handicapped people overcoming birth defects and leading
normal lives. but i've yet to see anyone stand up and shout, "we're
here,
we're missing chromosomes, get used to it.
some moderates can't understand what some people have against gay
marriages. a gay marriage cheapens the whole concept of marriage, which
is
two people joining in holy matrimony to, let's be real, procreate.
why not just let two guys that are good buddies marry so they can
both
get a health plan. just as with abortion, many people, because of strong
convictions, oppose paying for what they view as immoral and wrong.
hence
the opposition of extending health care benefits to domestic partners of
city workers.
am i afraid of gays? the male gay always seems fairly harmless. the
female gay, however, does scare me. how come lesbians in real life are
never like those nice ladies you see in late night cinemax (skinamax)
movies. the real ones are all hell-bent on filling the world with crappy
music (indigo girls, melissa ethridge, k.d. lang), and killing all the
men.
just remember to wear your khaki pants for straight pride on wednesday
to show that while it's nice to "celebrate perversity," "hetero is
bettero."
chris alexander is a sophomore mechanical engineering major from
westlake, ohio, who is trying his damndest to be the conservative
version
of john roszkowski.

k, not to turn this into a new gay-themed thread, cuz there are better forums
for it (i can think of at least one great place for it, right tigger?)

however:
in a message dated 1/24/99 4:27:49 pm, chris alexander, sophomore mechanical
engineering major from westlake, ohio, wrote in a the lantern (ohio state
university) commentary:

<<am i afraid of gays? the male gay always seems fairly harmless. >>

really????  all those body builders???  even the ones who can bench press me
with one hand while flexing for the boys with the other? (oh, wait... i'm
sterotyping, aren't i? ;)

<<the female gay, however, does scare me. how come lesbians in real life are
never like those nice ladies you see in late night cinemax (skinamax) movies.
>>

hmmmmm.  never ever???

<<the real ones are all hell-bent on filling the world with crappy music
(indigo girls, melissa ethridge, k.d. lang), and killing all the men.>>

rut-roh!  thems fighting words.  ig... crappy music????

and hell-bent on killing all the men????  hey, if i like men, and even call a
few some of my closest friends (even the hetero ones ;), does that mean i
gotta return my membership to the club?  i kinda like the way the little
rainbow card fits in my wallet. ;)

re: emily and mary magdalene.  i haven't seen the jcs video yet, though it is
at the top of my wish list.  is emily's geisha costume like the one in the
galileo video on watershed?
as for m.m....   this is a particular sticking point for me.  in my studies of
jewish and christian history, and extensive bible study and research, i
discovered where the mm prostitue story came from, and it wasn't the bible.
the prostitute receiving the pardon ("let he who is without sin cast the first
stone") from jesus is not mary magdalene.  read john 8.  the "woman taken in
adultery" is not referred to by name.  one of the very early popes (gregory,
but there were several gregories and i haven't been able to zero in on which
one) declared that mm was that prostitute. this was done for the purpose of
quashing a gnostic christian movement which revered mm as "the most beloved
deciple" and respected that she received visions directly from the ascended
christ.  i don't have any problem w/ jcs in its use of mm as having, or
wanting to have, a sexual relationship w/ jesus, but i just want to explain
that this is not in the bible but was a catholic construction.  i guess i see
mm in jcs not as a whore, but in that very human zone between whore and
virgin, where most of us real women are.  i was influenced and inspired along
certain lines of research and study by the girls' version of jcs,  truly
touched by the idea of amy-as-jesus.

i was also puzzled by this.  the only place i could find where "i don't wanna

hey y'all.....

i feel a rant coming on......and yet i'm speechless at the same time.....

why is chris alexander so threatened????  is it merely because he is clueless
in cleveland or was he actually born without a shred of compassion????

<<  with homosexuality, what someone is and what they do are pretty much one
and the same.......i really don't understand the concept of "gay pride."
studies show that homosexuality begins in the womb, making homosexuality, in
actuality, a birth defect. how can anyone be proud of a birth defect? >>

human sexuality is the product of many forces......just as alexander's cynical
attitudes are the result of many forces......with ignorance, what someone is
and what they do are pretty much one and the same.......

<<  some moderates can't understand what some people have against gay
marriages. a gay marriage cheapens the whole concept of marriage, which is two
people joining in holy matrimony to, let's be real, procreate. >>

so then i would assume that any marriage which does not bear fruit and
multiply is also cheap.....and what if one of the products of that union is
born with the so-called "birth defect" that the writer alluded to.....does
that also cheapen the union????  what is so threatening about people in love
wanting to commit to each other????

<<  am i afraid of gays? the male gay always seems fairly harmless. the female
gay, however, does scare me.  >>

probably......your attitude alone is likely to send women scurrying to the
opposite camp in droves.....there is one consolation though.....you can always
pawn the toaster oven and buy a subscription to penthouse......

<<  how come lesbians in real life are never like those nice ladies you see in
late night cinemax (skinamax) movies.  >>

uh, chris.....they're actresses.....playing on hetero male fantasies.....

the real ones are all hell-bent on filling the world with crappy music (indigo
girls, melissa ethridge, k.d. lang), and killing all the men.  >>

tawanda!!!!!

i feel better now......

peace, love and harmony.....

that's right, someone between the po in findlay (oh) and my mailbox in
harrisonburg (va) opened the package containing two copies of complicated
girls on cd and took them, leaving me the receipt.  how nice of them.  of
course, the po people say that there is nothing they can do and it was
probably open/damaged in one of the machines, so my cds could be lying
around in some po between here and there.  yeah right.  they're probably
lying around in someone's cd collection.

moral of the story:  make sure the padded envelope you send anything in is
very secure.  apparently one strip of packing tape over the opening doesn't
cut it.  and if you're really concerned about the contents, send it insured
because if they don't get "protection money" from you, they'll take your
stuff.

i'm just a little upset about this.  can't you tell?

just some amazingly gosh darn cool fuckers, as you can see.  this is
what cleveland has to offer:  cows, corn, and callous jerks.

hey carol, wanna form a posse to hunt down mr. chris and give him a

i'm back.

osu's paper is the lantern, and they are the "15th largest newspaper in
ohio."  well hidy hidy ho. pin a corn husk on their lapel.

their website is http://www.thelantern.com
their email address is lantern@osu.edu

their website said that their online version is produced daily at noon,
and its content is a combination of the print daily combined with "that
of special content targeted for the lantern web site."

their address:
the lantern
242 w. 18th ave.
columbus, oh 43210

business office: (614) 292-2031ph/ (614)292-3722fx
newsroom: (614)292-5721/ (614)292-5240fx

let's maybe refrain from sending lovey-dovey, peace-filled odes about
"but the indigo girls are soooo wonderful, and you're such a meanie for
saying their music is bad!"  that will only provoke mild bemusement in
our sweetheart, chris.  maybe focus on the fact that his dislike of the
music is rooted in his hatred, which is rooted in his fear.  so he
insulted your musical tastes; that's his opinion; forget about that.
but when he goes preaching that "hetero is better-o," i think that's
where we get angry and get moving.

happy letter writing,
jill

****************************************************************

the government of afghanistan is waging a war upon women. the
situation is getting so bad that one person in an editorial of the times
compared the treatment of women there to the treatment of jews in pre-
holocaust poland. since the taliban took power in 1996, women have had to wear
burqua and have been beaten and stoned in public for not having the proper
attire, even if this means simply not having the mesh covering in front of
their eyes.
one woman was beaten to death by an angry mob of fundamentalists
for  accidentally exposing her arm while she was driving.
another was stoned to death for trying to leave the country with
a
man that was not a relative. women are not allowed to work or even go out in
public without a male relative; professional women such as professors,
translators, doctors, lawyers, artists and writers have been forced from their
jobs and stuffed into their homes, so that depression is becoming so
widespread that it has reached emergency levels.
there is no way in such an extreme islamic society to know the
suicide rate with certainty, but relief workers are estimating that the
suicide rate among women, who cannot find proper medication and treatment for
severe depression and would rather take their lives than live in such
conditions, has increased significantly. homes where a woman is present must
have their windows painted so that she can never be seen by outsiders. they
must wear silent shoes so that they are never heard.
women live in fear of their lives for the slightest misbehavior. because
they cannot work, those without male relatives or husbands are either starving
to death or begging on the street, even if they hold ph.d.'s.
there are almost no medical facilities available for women, and
relief workers, in protest, have mostly left the country, taking medicine and
psychologists and other things necessary to treat the skyrocketing level
of depression among women.
at one of the rare hospitals for women, a reporter found still,
nearly
lifeless bodies lying motionless on top of beds, wrapped in theirburqua,
unwilling to speak, eat or do anything, but are slowly wasting away. others
have gone mad and were seen crouched in corners, perpetually rocking or
crying, most of them in fear. one doctor is considering, when what little
medication that is left finally runs out, leaving these women in front of the
president's residence as a form  of
peaceful protest. it is at the point where the term 'human
rights violations' have become an understatement.
husbands have the power of life and death over their women
relatives,
especially their wives, but an angry mob has just as much right to stone or
beat a woman, often to death, for exposing an inch of flesh or offending them
in the slightest way.
david cornwell has told me that we in the united states should
not judge the afghan people for such treatment because it is a 'cultural
thing', but this is not even true. women enjoyed relative freedom, to work,
dress generally as they wanted, and drive and appear in public  alone until
only 1996 -- the rapidity of this transition is the main reason for the
depression and suicide; women who were once educators or doctors or simply
used to basic human freedoms are now severely restricted and treated as
subhuman in the name of right-wing fundamentalist islam. it is not their
tradition or 'culture', but is alien to them, and it is the rule.
besides, if we could excuse everything on cultural grounds, then
weshould not be appalled that the carthaginians sacrificed their  infant
children, that little girls are circumcised in parts of africa, that blacks in
the deep south in the 1930's were lynched, prohibited from voting and forced
to submit to unjust jim crow laws.
everyone has a right to a tolerable human existence, even if
they are women in a muslim country in a part of the world that americans do
not understand.
if we can threaten military force in kosovo in the name of human
rights for the sake of ethnic albanians, americans can certainly express
peaceful outrage at the oppression, murder and injustice committed against
women by the taliban.

              *************
statement:

in signing this, we agree that the current treatment of women in
afghanistan is completely unacceptable and deserves support and action by the
people of the united states and the u.s. government and that the current
situation overseas will not be tolerated. women's rights is not a small issue
anywhere and it is unacceptable for women in 1998 to be treated as subhuman
and so much as property. equality and human decency is a right, not a freedom,
whether one lives in afghanistan or the united states.

hey all,
i was browsing around the tour dates on the mm homepage and saw a show
listed for feb. 12th in chicago. is it true? could i actually get the
chance to see this gal perform? if anybody knows anything please please
let me know. oh yeah, just wanted to say thanks for all the back up on
the lantern article. it definitely deserved some response. i didn't
think that just one person like me emailing him would make much of a
difference, but i knew (even though i've only been on the list for a few
months) that i could count on you guys to put this guy in his place. i'm
sure he was surprised that his article got so much attention....hehe.
that's what you get when you mess with ig fans....
peace everyone,
lia

this is my first time posting, but this is something i just thought everyone
interested in the women's right petition should know...
when i first heard of the petition from a post on this list, i sent an email
to the person that posted it and requested a copy...i then forwarded it to a
few friends, who also forwarded it to a few friends...one girl was so touched
that she sent a reply to the address "sarabande@brandeis.edu" although she was
not the fiftieth signer...she then recieved an email that i will be glad to
forward to anyone who is interested, but basically it says that email account
has been turned off...apparently the owner was not prepared for the large
amount of email she recieved, and anyone who writes to it
(sarabande@brandeis.edu) will recieve the same letter my friend did...i don't
know quite what this means for the fate of the petition, but i just figured
yall should know...
thanks much,
brandy

actually, this sounds kinda prejudice within itself.  my wife is from
cleveland and she is nothing as you would call them.  if you are going to
bash "cleveland people" then i believe they have the right to bash you.

<never sit quietly by, never remain

i believe that sometimes it is better to be silent.  you are not going to
change these people.  sometimes people do things to get people rawled up.
if you give them reactions, they'll keep it up.

>if you are going to bash "cleveland people" then i believe they have
>the right to bash you....
and other assorted little responses:

you make me laugh.  bemusedly.  for the love of god, people, *i* am from
cleveland.  i am still in cleveland.  (unlike all of you who have
written to me to say how dare i say something against the town, *i*
haven't skipped away from it yet.  if it's so great, why'd y'all leave?)
i practically live in a cornfield (come visit me and i'll take you on a
tour of the sights around here-- the dairy farm and the fields and the
woods.  oh, and the churches.) and i reserve the right to make
self-depreciating cracks about *my* city when it, and its residents,
piss me off.  did you have to put up with what i did, at the hands of
these people, during high school? no.  so you can't understand my
resurfacing anger.  don't take everything so personally. do i know
you/your wife/your cleveland-born family? nooo.  was i making an angry
statement about the kind of mindsets one is prone to find in small
midwest towns such as cleveland? yesss.  was i equally insulting myself
in the process?  you bet.  ergo, i wasn't seriously saying that every
last breathing being in the greater cleveland area is like our buddy at
osu.  so just calm down.  cleveland is the kind of place that "builds
character."  that can be a good or bad thing, depending on whether you
want that kind of character.  it's a real love/hate thing to live here;
this is the level of hell that dante missed. cleveland is like the big
old cranky cat you've had for 15 years; it scratches you when you try to
pet it and it pees on your good furniture and acts all cold and aloof
when you try to show it love.  but every once in a while, you'll wake up
from a nap to find it curled up next to you, purring.  and so you love
it.  until, sensing you've woken, it whips its head around and bites
you.  then you hate it again, cause your hand really hurts at that
point.  but it's been just you and this dang cat for so long that you
can't bear to be separated from it for very long; you find yourself
visiting friends, petting their amiable little felines, but silently
longing for the mangy fur of your own cat.  if someone ever tries to
say, "look at my pretty kitty, see how soft and nice it is, it's so much
better than your dang old cat," you're the first one to jump to defend
your pet, even though you're pounding the table with the fist that he
scratched to ribbons just last week.  you just need that stinking cat,
you're always, somewhat twistedly, brought back to it. and so you keep
it, you let it stick around or it lets you, who knows.  and you coexist,
albeit rather disgruntledly at times.

re: whether it "works" to directly contact a homophobe and have some
one-on-one conversing with him:
i believe that either tactic-- the loud and uppity, or the quiet and
sweetly coercive or whatever-- works when one is trying to change
people's thinking.  you may not agree with my tactics; however, that
doesn't mean they don't work.  it takes different things to get through
to different people.  now, how about i try use my big mouth and you use
your thoughtful mind and together we inform the guy?  that would be more
expedient than emailing me to say my tactics aren't right.

hi,

you can find a partial picture of amy's chest tatoo at

while you are there, click on "old promos" and you can find a really great
picture of the tatoo on her arm or go straight to the site at

after "promo" that is a "one", not an "l")

hello,
i am writing in regards to some references made in a
response to an e-mail of a distant friend. there were several responses
you made that i didnt agree with which i can live with. i can live with
the fact that you dont like melissa etheridge or the indigo girls...but
let us seperate what is fact and what is opinion. lets break down music
and get to the heart of what it is...it is an artful expression and can
be used to convey a variety of emotions and ideas. you look at their
music as gay and lesbian agenda...and yes im sure that there are
references made as such...what do you want them to do..mask ther music
to protect you? that would not be fair at all. but all of their music
can be interepreted in different ways to reach a variety of different
people so that they can relate in their own way...isnt that what music
is all about? their fans are very diverse...there are gays,
straights, black, white, hispanic, asian, european, christian. buddhist,
spiritualist, and those who are indifferent. what you did was gve your
opinion and now someone who might relate to their music is now diswayed
frm listening to it...how sad that someone could unconciously force
their views on someone else. the funny thing about this whole issue is
that many of the indigo girl fans will tell you that their music was
very healing for them and for many kept them from losing their
lives...kind of an inspiration to keep going because someone understood
them...how many of us can say we have the same impact on others i such a
large quantity. remember in any action that we take...there is a
reaction...and if that action relays negativity than the reaction will
bring negativity...your use of words have invalidated the esteem of
those who have been touched by this music. why not next time instead of
trashing the music...why not talk to the fans and get the scoop on why
they love this band.
you seem to have an issue on the rights of gays and
lesbians. that is not wrong, however, you said that we should
concentrate more on gun control. i agree that we have a problem of
firearm use in this country and likewise there is plenty of gay and
lesbian organizations focusing on this issue. but let me tell you a
little about what a hate crime is. it is an act against another human
being solely based on sexual orentation, racial, and religious
differences. in most cases a gun is not used. in most cases the victim
is duped or sprung on in suprise and in other cases ganged up on. if you
really look at the matthew shepard cas you will find that mat was coaxed
to believe that he was going someplace fun with the people that
ultimately killed him ...yes they did pistol whip him but rest assured
had they not had that they would have used something else, they beat
him, kicked him, spit on him and burned his genitals admittedly because
he was gay...plain and simple. in texas a man came out of a gay bar and
was going to his car when a bunch of high school boys took boards with
nails sticking out of them and beat this man to death on the street with
them because they planned to "beat up a queer" these kids came from
upper class and those were their exact words. another man was seduced by
a man and they went to the gay mans home where the other man proceeded
to use a buck knife to " gut the faggot" again those were his words.
heres one you should remember...jasper texas...a couple of bullys took a
black man...tied him to the bumper of a car and dragged the man down the
street...because he was black. these are not isolated incidences...they
happen everyday...and without guns. my point is when your dealing with
hate crimes...they are often the most gruesome of crimes and in texas
alone there can be over 300 a year so it goes without saying ...yes we
need gun control but we also need laws that address hate crimes. im
sorry you may not agree with me and thats sad that you cannot see a need
to protect people who are victims of these types of crimes on a daily
basis. have a good day! :+)

to all the ani people out there who have the album, isn't it great?  i agree
with tim, "come away from it" is an incredible song, and i like "jukebox" a
lot too.  the rest of the album is sort of sorting itself out in my mind, and
i'm kinda waiting for the other songs to sink in to get a true opinion.  it's
really good, i urge everybody to rush out and get it!  oh, and if you're an
ani fan and aren't on her mailing list yet, it would be a good idea to get on

that's my two cents worth for the moment!  ;)

hey,
i went to santa monica this weekend for a xena convention and guess who
i got to see...sulli, the guitar tech for indigo girls.  i was so excited.
evidently she's a big xena fan and happened to be out there getting guitars
ready for the girls to go in the studio.  she said they are going to england
to work with sinead o'connors band.  she said that the girls are probably be
back on tour in august and she is currently working with a country band called
dixie chicks up until june.  anyway, i just thought i would pass on the info.

the daemon fairy came yesterday, bearing many great gifts: mm's
christmas album, the big bang sampler (which i love, although i can;t get
the new mongrels video to work properly) and two caroline aiken albums
(live bait and live at the attic.) what tara said is true - she is
amazing. her voice reminds me of amy's in its richness, although it's a
bit lighter and more melodious. and amy and emily sing on the live album.
so you all need to get it. i like it better than lb anyway (although
admittedly i first heard these albums all of yesterday so these are not
highly evolved opinions.)
on a more off-topic vein, i spent most of yesterday evening
picking up the ca: live at the attic case and trying to figure out of whom
she reminded me. and i realized at last: melissa scully. caroline aiken
circa 1993 is... well, not a dead ringer for scully's sister, but does
look an awful lot like her. just another bizarre crossover between ig and
xf. or maybe i'm just... focused.... :)

hello netspace...
this is a test, this is only a test...

sorry for the waste of gray, i mean b/w...  but i sent a post yesterday at
11:00am and it arrived at 8:17pm?!  over a nine hour delay, that's pretty
bad!  so i'm just checking it again, and hopefully it will take the usual
5-10 minutes...

as some of you may remember a member of the list wrote an e-mail to the
guy that wrote that article in the lantern. since it was on the ist and
shared with everyone i read his reply and felt that as an activist for
human rights that i should not be complacent. so i wrote him back...and
since the attitudes that he has affects us all because of its very
nature and also because his view is shared by many, i felt the need to
share my reply with the list. another list member brought to my
attention that i misentrepreted what he said...and yes it seems as
though i did...funny thing is that as a journalist your not supposed to
use fatalistic words that might be intrepreted another way...it has been
the ruin of soe fine journalists in the past. i apologize for my
mistake....but ...not for taking a stand and certainly for not sharing
this small but significnant in principle of an issue. i do have his
reply and yes it is very clear on his view of his opinions..its still
not any answer to our problems. if you want his reply and mine as well
you can e-mail me for it or the list can decide democratically if they
want it...but in the mean time...i dont want to offend anyone. and i
apologize if this did.

sincerly,

jen

work...please join with me for a heart felt cry....i forgot and played shed
your skin the other day and my boss has banished ig to the no no list for
cds....hey it was the live version...i thought maybe i could get away with
it...tee hee.....oh well it was fun while it lasted...i got away with cry
cry cry too before my boss decided that it would be better to have music
playing over the intercom with out words....the other people in the office
have voiced their outrage about it because it seems that a few of them were
really starting to get into the ig stuff but as the title of this post
says...my days of ig are over....
so, my next quest is this....does anyone out there know where i can get
a hold of some instrumental ig stuff?  surly with all of the weddings and
commitment ceremonies out there, there has got to be a place for this out
there.....anyone who has any suggestions please let me know......

soooo....
i'm a little bummed after reading that bigoted lantern article...and
after learning that i didn't do nearly as well on my oac english exam
as i wanted to(damn! guess i should have done more studying- but who
studies for english?) and so in my typical escapist fashion i decide
to think about much happier things...like camp!!!  yeah camp [insert
happy little daydream here] the institution who i have to thank for my
ig compulsion.  and while i don't have a job yet,(i decided to switch
camps this year) i've started to think about what my camp name should
be...  definately something ig related.  so far i've come up with
nomad, saliers, ray(it's too close to a real name though) and...well
that's about it!   anybody out there more inspired than me that can
recommend one?  any suggestions (with the exception of indigonad)
would be muchly appreciated)

cheers,
patricia

ps... any directors out there looking to hire a canoe
instructor/tripper/indigo conversion specialist...somewhere in the
vicinity of ontario?
