hello beans.

i have a topic for you:
blue food.
discuss.
i.e.,
-brief explanation (for the newbies, to avoid half a dozen posts asking,
"what?  blue what?  huh?" ;))
-when and where recorded, and by whom
-full track listing and any little anecdotal-type-things about the songs
-who's got a nice, clear, early generation boot of it who's feeling
particularly like a sweetheart and would dub it for me because my evil
teenage vw with a vengeance ate the copy don r. made me?

talk amongst yourselves.

kiss kiss,
jill

now there's a question... i don't have my dub to hand, but it's not that low
a generation, i don't think. does anyone want to send me a really good copy
that i can magically transfer to cd, digitally master, clean up, make it
sound shiny and new for them and anyone else who wants?? or has this been
done already...

just a thought :o)

i am looking for a decent tape (or cd for that matter) of ig doing

also, my apologies to the wonderful one who sent me a boot of blue food.  i am
aware that i owe you a tape, but i lost your address   (and my hard drive
died, then clare's mom died) and life has been chaos for awhile.  all i can

there that is interested in jamming in washington, dc? women, men, guitars,
conga's, flutes, harmonica, singers, i don't care!  i just need some of that
musician creativity in my life right now...  and if we get good enough, i
know a few coffee shops and open mikes we could play.   btw i do love and
play any other folk rock as well, but about 50% the stuff i play/sing is
ig... they are just so wonderful i can't help it!  i'm also into seeing any
kind of good live music in dc too... or baltimore even!

thank you all for your creativity and love that you spread through the list!
my e-mail is below... :)

hey all,

i started a new list, and i *swear* it is not to discuss famous peoples'
private lovelifes.

instead, it is a feminist book discussion list.  i got the idea from my
oh-so-wonderful japanese professor who is my major advisor and my new
minor advisor since she now chairs the women's studies department.
anyway, they have a feminist professor's reading group, she (and the
others) seem to get a lot out of discussing books by authors such as naomi
wolf, banana yoshimoto, susan faludi, etc.

so if you are interested in joining (no gossip!), please send an e-mail to
feminist_books-subscribe@egroups.com  i believe that it has to be a blank
e-mail.

anyway, back to ukiuki worordo (sorry, inside joke!)

:-) karen

hey all
i just (really, about five seconds ago) heard that amy and emily will be
playing at eddie's during the saturday night benefit show.  i remember
reading "and special guests" at the end of the saturday night play list.
of course, i heard this from a friend, who heard it from a friend's
girlfriend.  so, who knows if it is true.  but, if you needed something to
convince you to get a ticket, maybe this will do it.  i hope it's true and
if not, i'm sorry for getting everyone's hopes up (including my own).  i'm
sure it will still be a great show.  i know they are supposed to be going
to europe to record, but maybe they delayed it a bit.  who knows.  let's
all think positively.

hello,

i would like to invite you to join the jillysulli mailing list.

the description of this mailing list is:

jilly c. and lisa sullivan romance gossip is back! this list "explores"
(i.e. blatantly violates all privacy, shows no human decency, and
fulfills shallow lives with idle chatter about lives and loves they have
no place discussing) the rumored "more than friends" relationship they
have had with each other. it began at a sst show in michigan, but
sightings are all over the world. lets chat about these two hardbodies
and their steamy relationship!! (as if we knew a darn thing about either
one of them or their (sic) relationship.)

you can join this list by going to the following web page:

if you have better things to do than gossip about strangers, please
ignore this message.
thanks,

----------------------

(incidentally, at the time this went to press, both sulli and jilly
adamantly denied their "relationship."  when asked, sulli said, "she's
not my girlfriend!"  a recent jilly spotting in cleveland resulted in
the following statement: "i don't *gaze* at her!"  oh, the lives of the
rich and famous.)

hey kind friends,

despite the fact that i rarely post and most of you have absolutely no =
idea who i am, i just had to share with you all what i did today. i am =
sooooo incredibly proud of myself - i figured out all the chords to =
caramia!! :-) :-) :-) yay, yay, yay. it was really random how it =
happened - i was in my friend marian's room, playing blood and fire for =
her (i've just gotten her hooked on ig, and she *loves* that song), and =
we were wishing how much we had the chords to caramia (which i have not =
been able to find anywhere). so i basically concluded that the only way =
to be able to play that song was if i figured it out myself. and i did. =
it was the weirdest thing. i'm not sure if all the chords are right - =
but they sound right at any rate, and they work. but if someone around =
here with a better ear than me (that would probably include the whole =
entire list!) would like to check them for accuracy, that would be =
wonderful - i'd really appreciate it. and, if anyone just wants the =
chords, i'd be happy to send them. (or, if i get an enormous response, =
i'll just send them to the list.) so. . .there's my indigo =
accomplishment for the day. sorry for babbling on like this - i just had =
to share, i'm so happy. :)

oh, and by the way, i can't believe how many friends i've made here at =
school because of a common love of ig. it's amazing. i remember a long =
time ago, when somebody (i think bethany) posted about making new =
friends at college when she heard another girl playing ig down the =
hallway, and i always hoped i'd have an experience like that. i just =
love ig fans. :)

love, music, and indigo,

p.s. is the girl who wanted flute part to crazy game still on the list?? =
(sorry i never sent it to you, but i do still have it if you want it.)

subject:      rose polenzani coming to ohio
mime-version: 1.0
content-type: text/plain

oh me.
rose is coming.  here.  now.
here.
now.

pack your bags.

rose polenzani will be playing at oberlin college this friday, 2/5, at
9pm. 5$ at the door if you have an oberlin i.d.; everyone else,
admission price is a sliding scale from 10$ to 20$ (please, if you can
afford it, 100% of the proceeds go to rose, and she really needs the
money, as we-- the fans-- are basically supporting her now). if i can
find some composure somewhere, i'll get you some driving directions.
hang on.

courtesy of oberlin's home page, here's a map of northeastern ohio:
http://www.oberlin.edu/colrelat/welcome/visitor/areamap.html

oberlin is close to several interstate highways, including i-80 (the
ohio turnpike), i-480, and i-90. oberlin is located at the junction of
ohio routes 58 and 511.

from the east: get to i-80. from there, you can either:
take exit 7a (baumhart road). take baumhart road south to ohio route 511
(lorain road). go east on 511 into town.
or
(i recommend this route) taking i-80 east to the rt. 58 exit.  turn
right (south) onto 58; take it for about 6 miles. this will take you to
the center of town (when you get near town, rt. 58 is called n. main).

from the west:
take i-90 to i-80 and follow the directions above (except you'll turn
left onto 58).
or
take i-90w to i-480w to sr10w to us20w (it sounds confusing, but it's
not, 480 and 10 and 20 are all the same highway, those nutty ohioans
just keep changing its name). there is an oberlin exit, it clearly says
"oberlin college next right."  i believe the street is sr511. turn right
at the exit; there will be a 4-way stop. go forward (stay on 511) into
town.

from the south:
take 71n to 480w to 10 to 20; follow directions above.

i'll be living in east hall (the one shaped like a giant 'e' when viewed
aerially; see the campus map at
http://www.oberlin.edu/inside/campus/campus_map.html , i
think it's bldg #47 on the map) this semester.  actually, i'll be moving
in thursday night.  if you want to find me there.

there's a couple places to scrounge parking (might be kinda difficult,
with people moving in for the semester and all) on campus:
1. the athletic field parking lot at the corner of union street and
woodland (don't park in the little student lot on the right of union,
they'll ticket you if you have no parking permit);
2. on n. professor
3. on woodland
(please print out the campus map, it'll help)
4. the admissions parking lot, which is off n. professor.

rose will be playing an intimate and oh-so-cozy little show in the 2nd
floor south lounge of noah hall, this 4-story brick 1920's building on
woodland street. (it's #46 on the campus map). if all goes as planned,
we'll have a wood-paneled study lounge with turn-of-the-century books,
wall sconces, and a fireplace as our venue. :)  please please please
come!  or else this will be just rose, her guitar, and me.  and some
really old encyclopedias.  there will be space for everyone to crash (as
long as no one minds floors), and we (meaning the listees, not
the-listees-and-rose; she's got to jet to hamilton college in ny) could
have one hell of a listmeet (if anybody's up for rocky horror on sat.
night, i'm game), as we've got the whole weekend.  heh heh heh...

please email me for further info, to figure out where to meet up, or my
phone #, or whatever.

mwah mwah,
jill

uh.  oops.
you might want to switch the phrases "from the east," and "from the

correctly, this time:

obviously i *am* such a human compass.

"if i am not who you thought i was,
well hello, it's nice to meet you..."       - melissa ferrick

making a difference

--preface--
>from the web site of daemon records, amy ray's indie label:

the genesis of daemon records arose from my own frustrations with the
music industry.  while reaping the benefits of a major label deal, i
realized that alll around me, "music" was getting lost among the
checkbooks, executives, and mountains of paperwork that are all such
a primary part of any major label.  i watched while so many musicians
that had inspired and influenced my fortunate career went
unrecognized.  i decided to stop complaining about the evils of the
music business and do my part to support the arts.

>from the very beginning, my first priority was to make sure that
daemon records embodied one characteristic that many independent
labels lack--diversity.  while a clearly defined "sound" enables a
record label to attract a strong and specific fan base, it doesn't
provide its listeners with an opportunity to broaden their musical
horizons.  i have observed many indie labels locked into conforming
to what is supposedly "cool" in order to maintain a hip status, and
often that hip sound is tied in with a certain "look" as well.
appearance and image seem to count a lot, even in the indies.  [but]
the common thread of all daemon recording artists is their attention
to the craft of songwriting, independent of musical genre or style.

--interview--
q: what role do you feel that image plays in promoting music?

a: to me, the only ting that image is important to is for people to
[be able to] attach something to the music that gives them a
personal reference point--that gives them an emotional and spiritual
attachment.  and that's not really image as much as it is contact,
which is like touring or going to record stores and meeting the
people who are selling your records.  that's human, and i think
that's really important to have that sort of human approach.

i never really care about image at the label--i never even really
approach it.  i think the promo photo, for instance, can be an
important tool.  but it's not like a band should look a certain
way--it's that the photo needs to give you an idea of what the
band's personality is.  i don't care what their personality is, but
i want that to come across.

i definitely don't even think about what they're wearing or any of
those kinds of things.  image to me is like te real, central
emotional and spiritual core that somebody sends out--it's not just
a superficial thing.  everybody's got an image.  but i think the
important thing is not what your image is but whether people are
understanding what it is.

q: do you feel that expectations about image are different for women
than for men in the music industry?

a: i think it's radically different.  i think a cute guy is also
marketed that way [with an emphasis on appearance], but i think if
you're a guy, you can be in a band and be overweight or kind of,
like--messy--and it's okay.  and they just don't market you as a
model, they market your music [instead].  but in like popular music
and alternative music, i think it's next to impossible if you're an
overweight woman, unless you have some kind of radical image that
somehow they manage to market.

it's really a double-standard, you know.  i've had friends that have
been overweight, and the labels have refused to see past that.  and
i've known guys that were just not beautiful but the standards of
the masses, and labels just don't care, they don't pay attention to
that.  but that to me is really an obvious double standard that i've
seen some real good examples of.

for women, i think there's definitely still a sexist sort of
standard out there, where you [have to] look a certain way and buy
into a certain kind of culture.  and there's a lot of women who are
really talented who do look a certain way and they end up getting a
little further, and it's not necessarily compromising.  they [just
happen to] look that way.  they look the way they want to look,
they're talented, and so they get lucky and they fit in.

but there are some women who are just as talented but have more--i
mean, i'd say that the more organic sort of bohemian approach like
me and emily have doesn't really work in the alternative sort of
hipster world.  even in a world that you think would be accepting of
it, like some of the publications or videos that consider themselves
to be more cuttig-edge, there's still a [double] standard for women.

as far as image goes, our label never really cared about imaging us
[the indigo girls].  but some labels hire someone to go out and shop
for you and project a certain image.  you have some control over
that.  if you walk into that deal knowing they're going to do that,
then you've set your own parameters at that point.  otherwise, you
need to try and step in and say, "i don't feel comfortable with
this."

q: why do you think that some people accept label deals that force
them into an image or a situation that they wouldn't ordinarily
choose for themselves?

a: i think people sometimes lose sight of what they would choose
when they're faced with a label deal.  especially if you're older
and you've been doing [music] for a long time, you're like, "oh, i
just need to get signed, i need a way to make a living, i need
someone to help me."  it's a lot of pressure to be doing everything
for yourself.  and so you sign.  and i think you don't always
realise what's gong to happen.

i think there are times when you thought you had dictated
everything in the right way, and they just turn everything around.
i have friends who are in messy situations right now with labels,
where they were signed and the person who signed them left the
label, so there isn't somebody there cheerleading for them now.
you know, there's a lot of really bad things that happen sometimes
once you get signed, and you have no control over it.

and a lot of times your record is constantly messed up.  you could
spend two months or three months making a record, and you could turn
it in, and the label says, "well, we just need to make this one
change," and i think at that point, you're so ready to have [the
record released] that you're like, "okay, let's do that."  and then
there's another change, and another change, and by that time, it's
been a year, and your record just doesn't sound the same any more.

but those are the kind of things you need to be aware of.  you have
to put your foot down and say, "absolutely not."  but it's hard to
do that with some labels if they're going to refuse to release your
record [as a result].

q: with all the pressure to sign a label deal, does the artist often
get the short end, financially?  you hear about musicians going
double platinum and then going bankrupt a year later.

a: sometimes artists are realizing a great deal of money, and they're
filing bankruptcy because they're irresponsible.  but a lot of times
it is a bad deal.  some artists sign these things called production
deals where everybody has a piece of them, and they do that because
they're at their wits' end, and they [the artist] feel like it's the
only way they're going to get somewhere.  and a lot of times, when
someone gets a hit, that's what happened, they've signed this deal
where a lot of other people are getting pieces of the pie.

q: daemon records has an unusual arrangement in that the artists
actually work for the label in other capacities.  how does that work?

a: i ask the artists to give a certain number of hours to the label
as part of their contract.  the reason i do that is because i think
that they gain experience with what's being done to push their
records, and also, we need help.  and it tends to make them more
appreciative and involved to have witnessed everything that's going
on.  it just tends to make them more aware.  and then i think they
work better with my staff, having some kind of understanding.

i pay them as much as i can, but i still don't think it's enough.
and they work really hard, and it's a labor of love for everybody
involved.  so it's really helpful if the artists get in there and
understand that, because then they're more responsive.  and they can
do as much as they want to help.  i mean, if they want to make phone
calls and really learn a lot, they can be in there and do as much as
they want to do.  and some artists want to do that, because they want
that experience as well.  they may play out one record with me and
then go do their own stuff afterwards.  and it helps them kind of get
a grip on it.

some artists aren't really interested in doing work--they want to
tour a lot, and they want to do all the other stuff, but they don't
really feel comfortable making phone calls and doing stuff like that.
there's a minimum amount of stuff they can do that's not that
intensive but still puts them in there somehow.

q: you said that when you started daemon, you were having to run it
from an indigo girls tour.  that must have been difficult.

a: i'm always running the label from an indigo girls tour.  when i
first started, i was doing pretty much everything, all the retail
calls and radio and stuff all by myself.  i got up really early
every day, and i was usually in the production office making calls
and just constantly thinking about it.  on the bus, i'd be doing my
accounting, with everything spread out--it was pretty much constant.
and it got a little ridiculous.

so it was really good when i started hiring people to work for me.
the people who work for me know more about it than i do at this point
and are much more talented at it.  so it's a good thing now.  i could
say that i am ultimately more effective by having employees, and i'm
more effective at being an indigo girl by having employees, too.

q: daemon has a strong commitment to community service--what are you
involved in now?

a: we're doing a lot of community things in atlanta, right now.
we're doing all-ages shows once a month, sponsoring them, paying the
bands to come play, like on a saturday afternoon.  i think we're
trying to get back to the reasons i started the label in the first
place--and pay more attention to the community and to smaller
distribution.  i guess in a way it's getting smaller and more
effective, which is what we've been trying to do for a long time.
figure out what our focus point is and do that.

one of my motivations was to have a business that was socially
responsible and supportive and hired people who cared about their
community.  so what i have is a staff of people who are really up on
what's going on socially and community-wise and politicall, and they
can do things that reflect what we think are good values.  we're
really conscientious about everything, and that's because the people
who work for me are [conscientious themselves].

--sidebar one--
john brand's band, belloluna, is part of daemon records' current
line-up, and he also serves as the label's publicist.

"a lot of people don't know that we are a non-profit label.  amy
created the label as a vehicle to support the arts and use some of
her indigo money to help developing talent get a a foothold in the
industry.  no matter how much money daemon makes, amy will never take
any for herself.  we will always re-invest it back into the
community in some form.  mainly what we are trying to do is just
break even on each project.  after that, we give the artists an
extremely generous royalty rate.  daemon uses its piece of the pie to
sign new artists or donate to worthy charities.  we also do benefit
projects on a regular basis.

"because [major labels] are investing a lot of money in you, they're
going to tell you what they think you have to do in order to make
sure they make lots of money back as profit.  but what we're trying
to do is make the money back that we invested in a band so we can
take that same money and go back and sign another band.  we want to
find as many bands as possible.  amy likes the idea of discovering
these developing baby bands, these underground bands that have great
potential, and when someone like daemon comes along and spends a
little money on them and helps promote them, these bands can really
blossom and become huge success stories.

"so i think amy likes the idea that she could be somebody who could
play that role with a developing band and just wants to do it out of
the goodness of her heart.  it's not about making any money.

"so we are not for profit, but at the same time, there's a certain
focus on money that comes with trying to break even on the record,
and for that reason we do ask the bands to tour a certain minimum
amount.  we want them to tour as much as they can, with the
understanding that people do have day jobs and can't just pick up and
go always.

"[at daemon] we don't work any harder on our career than you're
willing to work yourself.  we're a small staff, and we can't do
everything, so we're constantly having to compromise.  because
there's never enough hours in the day!

--sidebar two--
current artist roster at daemon records
        - john brand, daemon records

danielle howle--"do a two sable"
danielle is regarded as one of the strongest--and most eccentric--
songwriters in the music industry today.  she has an earthy, rich
singing voice, a finely developed sense of vocal melody, and an
ever-growing collection of original songs that have a classic,
timeless feel to them.  she performs solo-acoustic and also with her
electric rock band, the tantrums, and she is particularly well-known
for her charming and utterly captivating stage persona.
stylistically, her songs span a wide territory including country,
folk, americana, and alternative rock.

terri binion--"leavin' this town"
terri's songwriting and vocal style falls neatly between country,
folk, and pop.  reminiscent of nanci griffith and k.d. lang during
her "absolute torch and twang" period.  terri has a honey-tinged
voice with just a touch of melancholy in all the right places.

belloluna--"livid and loving it"
often compared to ben folds five (it's the piano they have in
common), this colorful rock band offers up an assortment of very
catchy, slightly twisted, jazz-whacked pop songs.  "livid" features
varied instrumentation, including sparkling guitar textures, cool
strings and horns, and groovy percussion.  think steely dan on
nitrous oxide.

three finger cowboy--"kissed"
3fc are a female-fronted happy pop punk (bubblegum punk?) band whose
album "kissed" demands to be played loud.  infectious melodies, loud
guitar chords, and a drummer who pounds the skins with joyful
abandon, this band defies you to be in a bad mood while you listen to
them.

new mongrels--"big cup of empty"
this is not really a band but a side project for a bunch of musicians
including, among others, indigo girls and michelle malone.
songwriter haynes brooke describes new mongrels music as
"iconoclastic roots music".  kind of folkie and bluegrassy at
times--but definitely eclectic also--it is american in the best
sense: performed with conviction and unafraid to be a little weird.

i was actually just joking, as i didn't think flying to atlanta ws
financially feasable (it probably is not wise) but i'm sure there are a ton
of others who would jaunt down (and bootleg it for us) so they need the
information.

uh, yeah, or something like that...

        hi folks...

just wanted to touch base on the "join my list" posts and other similar
nigcisms....

please remember that if you disagree with someone's post (nigc or not)
that the best way to deal with it is either email the original sender
privately or feel free to complain to me personally.
but don't post to the list at whole...this only serves to drag out the
situation.

the question was also raised in regards to whether the original post was
sent by a member, or was this spam sent to the list.  yes...the original
post was sent by a list member.  only people who are subscribed to the list
can post to the list.

one last thing...please remember to keep the length of your posts to a
reasonable size.  use your discretion and if it's rather large, post a
short description to see who's interested.

        have a great evening!

amy and emily will not be appearing at eddie's attic saturday unless they can
be two places at once.  when i saw sulli in santa monica last weekend she said
they were going in the studio in england for the beginning of feb. and
continuing on to woodstock.  but who knows...  i know i for one will be going
because its for a great cause.  uncle mark reynolds of ashley & mark.  i hear
his heart is shot.  one artery and its barely working.  he is living on

three shows and will donate as much money as i can spare.  i am/was a big fan.

...i'm reminded of the charity concert a few decembers back that mary
fortune express and vigilantes of love and michelle malone were playing in
(among others) at the cotton club (in atlanta)...the atlanta constitution
printed a rumor that an indigo girl or two might show up, and i guess lots
of people took this seriously, as at the end of the show when the lights
went up, people wouldn't leave, and started chanting "indigo" or something
like that.

it was still such a good concert with those three acts, that i can't
imagien being dissapointed...

i just stumbled onto a font called (and written in, in case you have it on

basically, anyone who has their album or just knows, if you could shed some
light on this it would be great. (checking their website, i think it is just
one of those coincidences... - maybe...)

hey again all
i just want to reiterate what i said in my first message about saturday
night.  it is only a rumor, but i just felt like i had to tell you all
just in case it turns out to be true.  i'm thinking to myself, what if one
of you heard the rumor and didn't share it with the rest of us and then
ig did actually appear.  well, we'll all just have to decide on our
own.  thanks for the help, though, in trying to get to the truth.  i ran
into my friend yesterday, the one who told me, and asked her how her
friend heard the rumor.  her reply, before she had to run to class was,
"she didn't seem to think it was a rumor."  maybe she's just trying to
will it true or something.  it is a great cause and i know many of us will
be there regardless of any "special guest" appearances.
oh, this morning on my way to school i heard "shame on you" on the radio,
and then later on they played a bunch of those "this is (insert name of
big music star) and you're listening to atlanta's favorite radio
station..."  and it was amy and emily!  i had never heard their recording
of it before.  both things together were a nice way to start the day.
have a great day everyone.

what's up at daemon

[...]

***nea showcase***
for the third straight year we've been asked to do a daemon showcase
at the nea conference in nashville.  the daemon gang heads out on friday
the 12th for out usual haunt, douglas corner.  line-up:  3 finger cowboy,
belloluna, ph balance, 6x and danielle howle and the tantrums and
hosted by amy ray.  show starts around 8:30.  be there!

***atlanta women on the radio***
kdhx 88.1 in st. louis is broadcasting on the net a radio show featuring
atlanta artists.  head to www.kdhxfm88.org on thursday feb 4th between
8:00pm - 10:00 pm central time.  here's a little message from the dj...

all these musicians have intense connections to atlanta.  they all support
one another.  this connection comes from the music made in atlanta.  and it's
all different!

>from jucifer, 3 finger cowboy to all of cooper seay's journey's.  to
all of michelle malone.  to lift.  danielle howle (what a hoot, that girl).
to wendy bucklew and her "kick ass" band.  which leads to dede vogt, a hell
of a producer!  she's very underrated.  indigo girl's, which thanks to their
success we now have more of a variery of great music coming from the
greater atlanta area.

these musicians make up the mecca fo atlanta music.  and it deserves to be
heard!

so st. louis is going to get a dose of the "women from atlanta!"\

[...]

***our thoughts***
atlanta has again lost another wonderful musician.  benjamin (smoke, the
opal foxx quartet, jcs) passed away last week.  we'll deeply miss him
and his art.

support your local music!

hi there kiddies!  i was just playin through the caramia chords, and had a
thought, see what all y'all guitar players out there think.

first, though, thanks a whole big fat million to the folks who transcribed
them and posted them!  you rule!

so, my query is, should the b on the "why why why" and the "don't know what
love is" be a b7?  i played it that way once, and it sounded a bit more
right, (plus the fingering is easier--i suck...).  i dunno if i'm right
cause i totally suck at that sort of thing, but will some of y'all give it a
play and see what you think, and then let me know?

thanks,

ok, this is my first post to the list, and i'm hoping it actually goes
through.
i'm 21 and have been a fan for about a year.  my best friend got me hooked
on the girls and i, in turn, got her hooked on sarah mclachlan.  i was able to
catch the girls live at the lilith concert in cmaden, nj, and also attended
the lilith concert in hershey, pa.
which leads me to my question...
while my friends and i were standing in line at the camden concert, a group
of girls were walking around with a "web-camera" interviewing people to put on
their web-sight about the indigo girls.  does anyone know where i can access
this?  also, can anyone supply me with a set list and/or audio tape of the
indigo girls set from the camden concert?
   thanks again.

who's playing it?  they mention nothing except for the writer in the

it dosn;t seem like a solo either girl would play...at least not then
they wouldn't.  they didn't seem to play electric for maybe 3 more

end even if they did it sure as heck dosn't sound like the right

hi!

amy did not perform at the first annual daemon showcase (which was at
neaex '97...she and em were in oz during neaex '98), and i suspect she
does not plan to perform this year.  she is there to introduce her
roster of artists and shine the spotlight on them.  she has emphasized
in the past that the purpose is to showcase the daemon artists, and that
the event isn't about her.  since she is there on daemon business, i
suspect she'd rather not discuss ig, if someone tries to make small talk
with her or get an autograph.  she's only there, i suppose, to use her
celebrity status or lend "marquee value" in order to draw people
familiar with her in and expose them to bands they might not otherwise
check out.  i'm sure she's also there because she wants to groove to the
music!

that said, from my impressions of the '97 neaex (the only other one she
has hosted), if a person is going to try to chat with amy during the
intermissions, they would probably be best served to ask her questions
about daemon, its bands, how to book them or how to buy their product.
i really think that is the mindset she is in at the showcase, and those
are probably the kinds of questions she's hoping to hear, rather than
"when is the new ig album coming out," "when will ig be touring again"
or "are you coming to my town," etc.

one little caveat -- if you are going primarlily in hopes of hearing her
perform (which she did not do at neaex '97), or to ask her about ig, or
to get an autograph or a photo taken with her, you may be disappointed.
not saying she wouldn't oblige your request, but respect the fact that
she is there to promote daemon and that's the hat she wears on that
night.  the daemon showcase is a lot of fun, imho, and an opportunity to
experience the daemon artists live, and a unique opportunity to observe
amy in a different role and in a different light.  and, it's a great
opportunity to observe amy in general. ;)

so, you all should just keep that in mind if you go.  btw, the artists
love for you to come up and talk with them and ask them about their
music, tours dates, merchandise, etc.  that's the purpose of the whole
event!   danielle howle is very accessible, btw!

peace, and i hope to meet some of you all there!

i know a&e are supposedly in europe this week/weekend recording with
sinead o'connor's band, which i guess is why they won't be at the uncle
mark reynolds benefit this weekend. but, the info re:  amy hosting came
from daemon, so i woule expect they know her schedule.  might not be a
bad idea for someone to e-mail daemon and ask them if she is indeed
going to be there or in europe.  if they will still be in europe, maybe
amy's going to fly back just for the showcase.  after all, she wasn't
there last year.  maybe she feels she needs to be there this year.  from
what i can recall, the showcase drew a much larger crowd in '97 when amy
hosted it [and the fact that she was to host it was announced in advance
in the neaex schedule.]

keeping my fingers crossed!

hey kind friends and intimate strangers~
ok first order of business (or semi. business, whatever you wanna call
it): does anyone have a boot of early recordings vol. 2 ? i have early
recordings vol. 1 and 3 and i'd like all of them (for some reason i love early
recordings of amy and em!)
ok, now for the randomness: weird thing happened: i was talking to
someone in my class online and she asked me why i like the indigo girls so
much. guess she doesn't know it's so hard to explain! anyways, jilly, and
tigger, it was awesome to see you guys in that chat today... i honestly didn't
think you'd know it was me. hopefully we'll chat again soon... and jilly, make
sure to email me about the 20th ok?
ig moment for the day: i was in advisory and filling out a survey thing
for the yearbook (you know where you put your fav. quote, deepest, darkest
secret, etc.) and i put mainly indigo answers (except for my special burping
talents... jilly, tigger and someone else i think elise (?) knows about
that... i am so proud of me!)... anyways, my advisory thought i was insane but
they already knew that. wow, am i babbling or what? well, gotta go now before
i bore you all to sleep. lata!

hi everyone,

i have a spare ticket (downstairs standing) for ani difranco's show at the
sbe on sat 20th feb (which is now sold out...)

i would like to see it go to a good home (ie not to the touts!). so if any
of the uk listees (or anyone else prepared to make a very long road/air
trip!!) are interested, email me and we'll sort something out. i'm not too
bothered about payment, i just don't want it to go to waste (i would happily
accept some ig boots in exchange!)

on the subject of the ani shows, does anyone know who's opening for her?

bye for now,

jen

john keane is credited with producing "get together," so i'd say it's
probably a good bet that he played the lead. it sounds a lot like the
12-string electric part he plays on "kid fears," which is kind of a relaxed,
chimy rhythm. you're right that it doesn't sound like emily (and too
complicated for amy's liking).

it up in case anybody wanted it - pretty cheap for those discs.  reply
if you want it - i'll send it for cost plus a sase.

also - i thought i'd learn the mandolin - yeah, right.  decided a year
later to sell it.  if anyone else is trying to learn, and not giving up,
and you want a starter book with a chord chart - let me know, you can
have mine.  reply if you want it - i'll send it for a sase.

i'm listening to honor the earth blacksburg va 9/20/97.  in the middle of "cut

something like this:

a cabin in the sand
the pressure of your hand
can i stay here for a while
can i see your sweet, sweet smile
what can i do to change your mind?
i'm so in love with you, do you feel the same?
what is it in you that makes you play this game?

it's just so haunting and beautiful.  has anyone heard this anywhere else?  is

this cd - i think it's the 2nd one - i have been listening to it everyday
when i get home from work and plop on the couch... i fast-forward to song
three and listen to thin line-river-strange fire (it's almost like it's own
trilogy on the disc), which are just amazing.  (ever since my backyard boot
that opens with thin line, i love that song!)
but also on that cd is virginia woolf & ghost i think (which are normally my
faves) - but as far as listening to this whole disc recently for me...  i
would have to say strange fire & tangled up in blue (i stole the chords!-es)
are my precious little things on that cd...

i also love least complicated and galileo...and jonas & ezekial. also the
beginning to chickenman...gets me every time!!!!

does this fascination with the indigo girls music ever end or diminsh?

i have been listening to them non-stop for months now. i own everything
released. i would rather listen to the igs than the new ani. one of my
friends...who has been trying to get me to listen to the igs for years is
laughing now. i keep asking her why she didn't tie me up and make me
listen!!!

they always seem to be able to capture how i am feeling. i guess too, being
a lesbian, it really means alot to me to hear someone sing about and
express my reality. sigh....i could become a serious groupie!!!!

hkf's,

i don't know about you guys (or y'all) (or ya freaks), but some of my fave
ig concert moments in 1998 (& late 97) included neil young songs...  a
couple of down by the river's at lf - (why was i the only one standing and
going completely nutz?)  powderfinger (and i was just 21...)  and i can't
wait for a cortez the killer after cut it out in 99!!!!!  it's amazing how
those songs are just so powerful when amy takes the mike (ooops, i mean
mic... i always do that) 8-)

to maybe start a thread - my favorite ig cover song of 1998 that i witnessed
live & in my living room (just an expression) was down by the river 7/4 &
7/5...  i never saw a wish you were here and that might've made the top of
my list.  (and in late 97 - romeo & juliet made my year, that's for sure!)

happy friday!!!!!
have fun playing in the sun - (a day in the sun, dancing alone...)
and don't run with scissors...

suffragette sessions show from irving plaza on sept. 3rd 1998 in new york

two great songs by jane siberry and lisa germano, in addition to the rock
version of power of two and cannonball by the breeders, and they closed
with midnight train to georgia. and emily played soon to be nothing, and
etc. etc. it was a great show.  i will be happy to send you a tape and

i think there may be a new song from penobscot 9/14/97 (i think i may be

good as the 9:30 club boot (and i know for a fact that there does exist a

of course i'm the dufus who left at 6/14/98 guiness fleadh and missed the

t. chapman blew the crowd away before ig ever took the stage...)

ah yes,  i remember my quest to figure out what this was too.  she
inserted it a few times - i heard it san diego and maybe la too.  (your
lyric guess is *way* closer than mine was...)

it's neil young's cowgirl in the sand.

here are the lyrics, off of a tab database somewhere on the net:

(by the way, as usual, amy does neil better than neil does...)

hello cowgirl in the sand
is this place at your command?
can i stay here for a while?
can i see your sweet, sweet smile

old enough now, to change your name
when so many love you is it the same?
its the woman in you that makes you want to play this game

hello ruby in the dust
has your band begun to rust?
after all the sin we had
i was hopin that wed turn bad

old enough now, to change your name
when so many love you is it the same?
its the woman in you that makes you want to play this game

hello woman of my dreams
is this not the way it seems?
purple words on a gray background
to be a woman and to be turned down

old enough now, to change your name
when so many love you is it the same?
its the woman in you that makes you want to play this game

"i have many hobbies that revolve around sleeping mostly, but the
variations of sleep that i have discovered would amaze you."

yes, he does.  it's even on video, from the athens music show
from back in the late 80s, i believe. he rocked out with tme

different as i stated before.) i am nearly 100% positive that that's what he's

<< does this fascination with the indigo girls music ever end or diminsh? >>

gee, i hope not.  they keep changing, like the rest of us.  one of the most
special things about them is how they are constantly experimenting, not
stalling long enough to get stale.   you will not find them following any
formula, like if they did one special song that got the "song of the year"
grammy, i seriously doubt that they would then go crank out as many clones of
that song as they could, unlike so many others who sold out their art.
because they seem to realize just how much work there is to do, actually
changing the world, they don't rest on their laurels.  i see them in this
because it parallels my own spirituallity in a way.  i seek wisdom, from
understanding, that comes from knowledge.  i can, in one situation, be the
"smartest" one, but i'm constantly being humbled by the realization that i can
never know everything.  but i still try.  i see amy and emily doing this too,
in their activism, seeking out challenges that humble them and really put them
to work.  i first heard them on cd at a friend's house.  she was just sure
that i'd like them.  well, i couldn't even get through the first song without
just imploding.  it hurt so much-- they might as well have been going at my
chest with a power drill.  at the time, i was in a really bad spiritual way,
lying, cheating, stealing -- acting out all over the place, being honest to no
one, especially myself.  a few years later, i caught "joking" on vh1. more
like "joking" caught me.  clare, being the darling that she is, promptly went
out and bought me the rop cassette.  with  student-loan  money, i got myself a
decent stereo system, and bought all the cd's they had out at that time.  it
was an incredible revelation, beyond the experience of just thinking, "i like
this band"....... there are several other female acts who have superficially
similar music -- acoustic guitars, whatever.  but, not to dis them, but none
of them carry that sizzling honesty into my spirit.  it's really cool that
they are gay, but that alone isn't the power.  melissa etheridge is an awesome
rocker (duh) with a lot of energy and passion, but it's not the same thing.
somewhere in between "strange fire" (the song) and "world falls", "prince of
darkness", "hand-me-downs", "joking", "it's alright"..(plus several others)
the message to my inner self was "do it" .  so i did it-- sat down to create
my own art form (collage technique w/ glossy magazine paper)  (i'm sure there
are many others who do this, but i didn't "learn" it anywhere)...  and i
called myself an artist and people took me seriously because of it.  and i
write.  the deep influence of ig will be clear in my novel.  i guess it was a
creative jump-start i got from the music.  if they didn't release any more
music, i would still have the gift they gave me. but they will release  more
music, and  gifts and the packaging of those life-giving gifts is so
unbelievably beautiful that the music and voices stand worthy of awe without
even being plumbed for the deeper treasure.  they will continue to challenge
us to look at the rest of the world for what it is, full of amazing peoples
but also full of so much pain and conflict and injustice.  and they will
continue to work for change and peace with compassion that does not regard
national borders.  and we'll be there with them, in our enduring fascination.
freida.

so it is like this.i get my mailing list mail almost every day, and i
read it with an insatiable appetite for info about the girls.i keep
hearing about this performer named michelle malone, whom i have never
heard of anywhere else but here. my quest? to finally hear some of her
music to see what all the hype is about.
i go to our friendly neighborhood used cd store (which incidentally does
not charge tax!) and what do i find? "beneath the devil moon" by
michelle malone.i just listened to it for the first time and really
enjoyed it.
so my next question.......
what is the best mm cd? how many are there?
any info (private response, of course) would be appreciated.
oh, and i notice in the liner notes that she thanks a + e for their
support.cool.

the tattoo axe thingy isn't called a labrynth (that's a maze) it's a
labrys. it was the axe used by the amazons and has come to be a lesbian
symbol. it was used more in the seventies than today.

hi y'all....

there is always a certain "rush" involved when we discover something new that
seems to speak directly to us.....the truly great artists are able to provide
that rush repeatedly.....song after song.....cd after cd.....concert after
concert.....

for some artists, "making it" is all that matters.....once they have the major
label contract, disillusionment sets in.....amy and emily are special because
their music is part of who they are.....and because they are not complacent to
rest on past achievments.....

that is why their music will never sound  tired or dated......

peace and harmony....

hi,

i got this information from a fellow fan via email and thought i would pass
it along, it is in reference to the benefit show indigo girls are reported
to be playing in april:

"i got the definite on the concert in nashville. it's
april 12th and tix go on sale to the general public 1 march, but members
of the journey or tcask (tn  coalition to abolish state killings) can
buy now though mail order. the $50 tix include a short reception after.
it's at the ryman auditorium here... that's about all i know."

hope this helps,

carolyn

<<"the daemon showcase is a lot of fun, imho, and an opportunity to
experience the daemon artists live, and a unique opportunity to observe
amy in a different role and in a different light.  and, it's a great
opportunity to observe amy in general. ;)

so, you all should just keep that in mind if you go.  btw, the artists
love for you to come up and talk with them and ask them about their
music, tours dates, merchandise, etc.  that's the purpose of the whole
event!   danielle howle is very accessible, btw!

joan :-d">

this is sooooooo true.  when i went to see 3 finger cowboy in decatur for the
art show in october (?) at one of daemon's showcases, amy was there.  she was
groovin' and eating dinner on a picnic blanket like every other joe 6-pack
---- so simply happy with her environment.  but she did not play, and no one
hounded her.

from what i've read thus far (i'm slow with responding to this list), y'all
all seem excited about nea, but all i remember about it is the bad funky smell
of greedy people (music labels).  has it changed?  or is this all together a
different thing?

oooh!!  isn't that amy's birthday?
wouldn't that be fun!   it sounds like the perfect opportunity to give
her a list b-day present....
anyone gonna be going to that?
are we doing the list-present this year?

thought this board might enjoy the following quote from the "details"
magazine review of "burning london: the clash tribute"

"...one of the only bands on 'burning london' that seems to really
understand the irreverence that made the clash fun as well as fierce is the
indigo girls, who transform "clampdown" into an unplugged folkie jam...."
