alright y'all~
time for me to add my two cents in... first about this innocent question
deal; i for one love every indigo song... i have some that i don't like as
much as others but i don't find myself fast fwding or skipping over any of
them (and by the way i totally respect the rest of you who do dislike certain
songs). everyone is entitled to their own opinions.
alright my second question is about the newport folk festival. does anyone
have the web address for it? also, is anyone around the new hampshire area
planning to attend? (i don't want to go alone!) and when is it anyhow?
and the last thing i have to post: does anyone know when they're coming out
with a new album?
peace, love, all things indigo,
~alyssa

there's a really exciting show coming up on feb. 25th at the star bar in
little 5 points...

commonwealth
cooper seay
lauren fincham
christian henderson (for those who remember the vld days)
and more!

some notes about this show:

-rumor has it, cooper's going to play electric, which is going to be a rare
treat!  cooper's been writing a bunch of new songs... just when you thought
she couldn't get any better, she pulls out these surprises :)

-commonwealth rocks...  this is the review from creative loafing this past
week's cd release party:

----------------------------------------
decatur's acoustic duet commonwealth celebrates the release of their cd
another roadside attraction, the latest anticipated addition to thelocal
acoustic/folk rock selection. singer/songwriter/guitarists sandi angotti and
kristen damato sing with passionate enthusiasm about life, love, loss and
redemption, something a more prolific local acoustic duet gave up years ago to
become entrepreneurs.
----------------------------------------

my own personal view of commonwealth (in a nut shell) is that they write the
songs that ani difranco *wishes* she could write :)  but seriously, these
girls will influence and shape the acoustic scene of the future.

if you want to order the new cd "another roadside attraction" contact
commonwealth@monsterbit.com

-lauren fincham is an open mike finalist from the infamous eddie's attic open
mic nights and has recently played the have a heart benefit and other shows at
the attic!

hope to see ya there!

hi guys have you missed me????
been busy playin around with a cute little thing i met a few weeks ago and i
haven't had a chance to get online....but here is my suggestions...you all
know that i sent amy an afghan and sent it out to the fan club back at
christmas....haven't heard anything about it yet...but i only hope she
actually got it instead of some one at the fan club....but for amy it has to
be something personal and from our hearts.....i suggest this...someone start
a story...you know once upon a time and everyone add a line to it from the
list...get someone to collect all of them put them together and then you
know type it up and print it out real nice...does anyone understand what i
mean?

oh well just my two cents worth any other suggestions?

mime-version: 1.0

okey dokey folkies!  i just wanted to share something short i think everyone
should consider... im not saying we should give up on the idea of sending out
a cumulative bday present for amy, but past experiences im afraid havent been
too successful... i know others have organized projects, and had rough times
as well.  jill and i worked on gathering what totaled 2 grand for emily's bday
for a donation to atlanta's youth pride.... the thought behind it was
wonderful, and i enjoy giving for the right cause, but just an added note for
those who care, i am not sure either of the indigo girls ever even hear about
what is done in their name.  i still talk to linda ellis, director of youth
pride, occaisionaly, and she personally contacted emily and received no
response... donations are always a plus, because they will always benefit..
but i think if we were to go doing something personal and mailing it to the
fan club, amy would never receive it... rena shear worked especially hard on
creating an absolutely beautiful and artistic card for emily.. i mailed it,
but never any response as to whether or not she received it.. matter of fact,
i think last year's organizer on ms. rays' present received no response as
well... so, i just thought all of you should be aware of the situation.. if
there even is one (perhaps im using the wrong word....??)  okey.. that's it
for now.. any questions can be sent to me at gitroop@aol.com or
jillyc@hotmail.com

hope this didnt upset anyone!
peace all,
erin t.

p.s.  the daemon showcase seems to be a great hit... never been to one till
last friday, but my, what a cheery place!

subject:      my take on michelle malone--st. louis (nigc)
mime-version: 1.0
content-type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii
content-transfer-encoding: 7bit

hey everyone.  here is my review on michelle malone's performance at
attitude's in st. louis february 13.  first, there was a local band called
"livid."  i'm sorry, but imho they sucked.  well, really i don't know if i
liked them or not because i couldn't understand one word they sang--oh, yes, i
remember i did hear the word "f*#k" in one song.  their instruments were
turned up way too loud and their vocals didn't come through and what i did
hear was a lot of heavy metal sounding kind of screaming.  during the show,
michelle walked past our table toward the front of the bar.  she never did
come back.  when i went back to get another beer, there she was, sitting all
alone in her merchandise booth.  so i went over and talked to her and got a
shirt and her "lucky to be live" cd.  she was so nice and sweet.  she seemed
really shy.  when i asked her to sign the cd and for a photo with me she
smiled enthusiastically and said, "really?"  then when she got on stage, they
really built her up during the intro.  when she got to the mic, she said,
"wow, i better be good, huh?"  she played all the songs i wanted to hear
except for "my dimming soul."  she was by herself, just her and her guitar,
which is the way i like it.  as for the crowd, they left a lot to be desired.
the music had to be turned up too loud to really enjoy--otherwise, you
couldn't have heard her over the crowd noise.  it was a typical bar scene.
michelle was up there pouring out her soul and people who were way too drunk
from marti gras in soulard were drinking more and being loud and completely
obnoxious.  i felt bad that someone as talented as michelle still has to go
around singing in bars like this.  i wish they had put her into the other
section of the bar and let those who wanted to hear her go in there and others
could go out to their usual, sat. night loud disco, naked dancer music in the
larger area.  i felt like most were there because they were sat. night
regulars and wanted michelle to hurry so they could go on w/ their familiar,
yet boring sat. night.  i don't have the set list but she did play grace, blue
suede, butter biscuit, and a couple new songs not yet released.  she said she
should have a new cd out in a few months.  she was called back for an encore,
much to my surprise, and she played "wild horses" and ended the show w/
"teenagers lament."  she did autograph my cd and had her pic taken with me.
she had on a very wild shirt.  kind of 70's looking with big circles all over
it. and then a black leather jacket on over that and she took off her marti
gras beads before taking a pic w/ me.  i just stood next to her while my gf
took the picture (being good ;)  and michelle put her arm around me.  she was
surprisingly small.  she looks larger than life on stage--although she is
soooooo thin!  but she was shorter than i imagined.  she gave a great
performance in a less than condusive environment.  i enjoyed it in spite of
the surroundings.

thanks if you made it through this far...

toye

wow freida.  it's amazing that i met you on this list.  i'll tell you how eds
has affected my family and how indigo girls has helped me deal with it.  it
may be long, but it has to be said.

yep, you and i have something in common...i've got the ugly scar on my inner
forearm, too, from the skin punch biopsy.

when i was in the 6th grade i had that done at emory university.  my whole
family had it done there, and the tissues were sent off to dr. peter byers at
the uni of washington in seattle.  dr. byers is probably the expert on
connective tissue disorders.  i got one of his books to research for my
thesis, which was about eds, and i was amazed!  anyway, the samples came back
negative for me but positive for my sister.

i guess i should tell you why we had it done....

my dad died when i was in the 5th grade of an aortic rupture.  the doctors at
an atlanta area hosptal (do you live in atlanta?????) had no clue what was
going on until my family doctor told the emergency doctors about my g-mother's
death (due to eds).  by that time it was all over, though, b/c my dad had died
suddenly...he was only 36.  so, a year later, we were tested.  i don't know if
you've seen a lot of patients with eds, but the characteristics are loose
joints, hypermobile  and hyperextensive skin.  well, my family had neither, so
we were refered to dr. byers, who i think is very passionate about fighting
eds type 4, which is what my family has.  yep, you're correct-o-mundo....a
diagnosis does help!!! tell me more about the doctor you found (the one with
eds in his family, too).

so, you see it's affected me and my family since that dreadful day in atlanta
(of course the same thing happened to my g-mom at decatur hospital the year
and consequently place i was born (74)).  i've been living with knowing that
my sister will die before me with something i could have had since 1985, and
it's a pretty heavy weight to carry.  but, i can't even imagine what my sister
thinks.  the doctors say she won't live past 40; she's fine now, but it hits
suddenly, they say.

so, so, so, so, so....here's where indigo girls come in....my aunt and my dad
(and my mother's family) all grew up in decatur.  my aunt went to school with
one of emily's sisters, so she was fan before they had fans.  before the death
of my dad, my aunt was an atheist, and she was pretty "weird"....that's what
my family always told me about her.  after my dad died, she became religious
and spiritual b/c she found out that she didnt' have eds.  when she knew that
i didn't have it and my sister did, she felt a need to explain to me that god
had nothing to do with it; it was nature, genetics, etc......we went on a trip
across the country, up to the grand tetons for a week.  that's when she
thought she'd introduce me to indigo girls b/c she knew that i depressed and
full of anger, but i had already heard of them at summer camp.  get this
---->>>  this has current significance!!!!  a year before, my mother thought
that i should tap into my tom-boy roots hard.  i was getting into "boy sports
and boy games", so she sent me to summer camp for 8 weeks, a rugged summer
camp.  that is where i first met uncle mark reynolds!!!!!!  mark and ashley
were at that summer camp performing, and i vaguely remember a woman just like
amy ray there...it was a long time ago (1986-87), but i still remember it.
anyway, back at the grand tetons, when i told my aunt that i had already
started listening to indigo girls, she was astounded.  needless to say, my
aunt and i are really close mainly b/c we're the only ones without the fatal
eds, but also b/c we're the only feminists in the family.

so, you can see that i have strong early roots to indigo girls, but my family
doesn't like to express that.  here's where the sad part comes in....my family
is just like all the southern family shit you know about....they think indigo
girls are 'weird' and all...they think that i'm a lesbian waiting to come out
of the closet and shit, but it's just that no matter where i turn, indigo
girls-type music has been there to comfort me.  that is why seeing amy at
eddie's play live for the first time in my life was such a moment for me....i
wish i could have seen uncle mark reynolds, but i'm busy with work out here in
texas.

i had to send this to all of y'all b/c i think it's important for you to know
what freida and i are saying about ehlers-danlos syndrome and other "non
popular" connective tissue diseases....and how it relates to indigo girls.

spent,
chee

it depends on what kind of camping you'd like to do.  before you go and get a

it's only a half hour away from dc.  when i say it depends on what type of
camping you'd like to do...it's pretty universal amoung national
parks...you've got the family type camping (car camping), rv camping with
concessionairs, and then my favorite --- back country camping (cheapest and

hey folks,

the following article comes from the cnn web site
(http://www.cnn.com).

cheers,
sherlyn

----
u.s. musicians to appear in cuba

reuters
15-feb-99

miami (reuters) - american musicians will spend march 21-28 in
havana writing songs with cuban performers and will put on a
joint concert for an expected crowd of more than 40,000 in
havana, the project's organizer said monday.

"this will be a week of co-writing with famous u.s. and cuban
artists, culminating in participation in an open-air concert
for the cuban people," the group, the los angeles-based music
bridge, said in a statement posted on its web site.

confirmed american artists include mick fleetwood from
fleetwood mac, andy summers from the police and pop singer
lisa loeb, the group said.

none of the performers will get paid for the songwriting week
or the concert, to be held at havana's karl marx theater,
according to an article in monday's miami herald.

the article also said that jimmy buffett, joan osborne, former
public enemy leader chuck d, the indigo girls and peter buck
of r.e.m. had confirmed their attendance, and organizers were
talking with peter gabriel, bonnie raitt, sting and paddy
maloney of the chieftains.

the united states has imposed a strict trade embargo against
cuba since 1962, but changes in cuban policy within the past
two years have allowed more cultural exchange with the
communist-ruled caribbean island.

music bridges was created in 1988 by songwriter/producer alan
roy scott to organize a u.s. musical collaboration with soviet
musicians. similar events have been held in bali, romania and
ireland.

hi everyone!

if you've sent your check in the last three weeks, chances are good that i
have it, and your shirts are sitting on my desk waiting to be mailed. i've
been quite ill, and since i live alone, i haven't been able to bribe
anyone to take them to the post office for me. they will go out on
wednesday morning at the very latest, so you should see 'em by this
weekend.

also, if you haven't sent your check, please do so asap (or contact me) or
your order *will* be canceled.

i head "get out the map" on the radio the other morning. any info on if it
has been released, or if that was just a fluke?

take care,
amy

i just had a suggestion if someone on the list is going to organize a
collection - a donation to school of americas watch.  since amy participated
in the civil disobedience last fall and her and emily have been invited to
play in d.c. at the action this may it is definitely a timely and important

if anyone wants to learn more about this organization, go to:  www.soaw.org

thats a good point!!  especially because we were worried that they never
hear about it.  i have a feeling they would let amy know for sure
because they're in corresponence w/ them about the concert.
hmmm, but what was the dinner benefit on amy's b-day?  wasn't it a
benefit?  would the people raising the money for their own somthing feel
shafted because amy was getting money in her name from another group?
well, i guess we could get it to her on another day...or split the money
both ways....
or maybe it wasn't a benefit anyway and i don't remember everything
right....

sorry to waste bandwidth, but last week i went to see the voices on the verge
show again in providence and i booted it. so if anyone is interested please
email me

voices on verge is erin mckeown, roze polenzani, jess klein and lori
mckenna.... at this show erin didnt play, she just mc'd because she was sick.
rose polenzani also did not play b/c she was sick, but she was replaced by
this awesome chick from bost named kris delmohrst.  also there was a special
guest from boston, pamela means who fucking rocked the house. its pretty good
quality, except it is missing about 8 songs, because i did not expect the show
to go over 100 minutes.  anyways, its still worth it in my opinion, so if you
are interested please lemme know

hey,

i just wanted to let everyone know that there's an incredible
up-and-coming musician by the name of rufus wainwright that you should all
check out. his style is a bit different from the girls- more of an
indulgent cabaret sound, but he's sooooo great. not to mention that he's
also gay and cute...

anyway, give him a listen if you get a chance.

indigo girl amy ray heard indigenous and invited them to appear on her
compilation, honor the earth. with her help, they recorded their major-label
debut, things we do, which spawned the single "now that you're gone." they've
also released blues this morning, an ep that further showcases the talents of
this close-knit group. pte talked recently with rockdaily.com about what it
was like starting out, meeting the indigo girls and the challenges of
recording your material the second time around.

nomads, indians, saints
"we got a chance to hang out with the indigo girls a lot and they were pretty
cool . . . our manager hooked us up on that cd [amy ray's honor the earth] and
he picked us to put a track on there, because amy ray said we could. so that's
how we got hooked up with that. i guess she liked us and we ended up opening
up for them in indianapolis. from there we did some more dates with the indigo
girls."

ooh, i'm kinda excited about that before they were rock stars thing.  i
wonder if it will be the local stuff on watershed (cable access) or from
the early shows...or if it will be something crazier.  i think i
remember reading somwhere that they were in musical theater (besides
jcs!)?  i know on lifeblood, they at least played the music for
something at emory back in the mid 80's.....
cuz that show is fond of any stage stuff.....
or maybe i'll get to see amy in a band uniform (a whole uniform, not
just the top as in joking)...cuz...well, i would just like to see it!
or course, i still can't see amy as having been a flute player....
maybe horn or tuba or trumpet (but she dosn't look like a trombone, and
that makes me sad, cuz i'm a boner....)...but not flute!
ah well...
anyway, i can't wait!!  especially cuz i'm gonna miss it tuesday....
carol
ps-someone time how long into the hour it shows up so i don't have to
spazz and get vcr happy

you remember that someone ran into sulli and she said she was currently

hopes that they might accidently show sulli.
also, you don't mute the tv because you had to try and hear the

have i not been paying attention?  probably.  amy played the flute in marching
band?  i did too, in two states, high school and college.  and i'm just now
finding this out?  i'm such and idiot -- as much as i dug the "joking" video,
and credit it with my conversion to indigoville, i never caught that amy was
wearing a band uniform coat.  i loved the coat, the whole look, and i've worn,
uh, four different band uniforms...  anyway, someone with the proper

enough), just like us!

"today, the 26-year-old shares a strange intimacy with the group's growing
community of fans. he receives as many as 20 e-mails a day from other
widespread panic enthusiasts..."

i repeat, vligc, and i must reiterate again (redundant: see redundant) there
is very little amy & emily goin' on here......

u.s. musicians to work with cubans
by robert jablon
los angeles (ap) -- dozens of americans will travel to cuba next month on a
once-forbidden mission: to create music.

as many as 35 jazz, rock and country artists, ranging from jimmy buffett to
joan osborne and the indigo girls, will work for a week to compose new songs in
collaboration with cuban artists.

u.s. performers have toured cuba before, but under the 40-year-old u.s. trade
embargo they could not collaborate on new works, said attorney bill martinez,
who sought u.s. permission for the cultural exchange. the license was granted
last week.

''one of the sticking points was that, under the embargo ... you could not
create new works, new material here,'' he said in a telephone interview monday
from havana. ''this is historic.''

the project, dubbed ''music bridges ... over troubled waters,'' will culminate
with a free concert on march 28, planned for havana's 5,000-seat karl marx
theater.

the event follows a thaw between the two countries in recent years and the
clinton administration's january decision to ease some cultural exchange
restrictions of the embargo.

the event is the latest cultural effort by alan roy scott, a san fernando
valley songwriter and music producer whose nonprofit music bridges has
masterminded similar projects in the former soviet union, indonesia, romania
and ireland.

scott also was in havana monday, busily arranging the details and trying to
avoid the inevitable politics surrounding relations with the communist island
nation.

''i have no goal other than the fact that we're here, we do this, and the world
can judge for itself what it means,'' he said. ''i only know when songs get
written by people that are on the same wavelength, it transcends all those
subjects.''

music bridges is working with the cuban music institute to organize the event.
among the cuban artists scheduled to take part are chucho valdes, a jazz
pianist who heads the group irakere and members of the popular groups los van,
maraca and sierra maestra.

martinez said he had to assuage concerns from both governments. u.s. officials
wanted to make sure that the project wouldn't violate the embargo by giving the
cuban government a financial benefit, such as payments to the artists, while
''the cubans had to know that this is a legitimate exchange where they weren't
going to be exploited.''

none of the american or cuban performers will be paid, martinez said.

"the opportunity to be threatened, humiliated and to live in fear of being
beaten to death is the only 'special right' our culture bestows on
homosexuals." -d. carman, denver post,10/10/98  please ask your state reps to

hey folks,
i was just listening to the local news and heard a story about
some washington (?) school that "abruptly" pulled a girl
who was set to play the role of jesus in the school production of
jcs from the role and replaced her with a ....... boy !!!!!!

no doubt it was the evil influence of ig on our school children
that gave them the notion that they could get away with having
a girl jesus in the first place ( heheheheh....)

it will be interesting to see if this goes anywhere ....

january 1990 -- atlanta magazine

            mood indigo
            by melissa harris

[clip]

third among four kids, amy was born in atlanta in april 1964 to frances
and larry ray. her father is a radiologist and president of
the medical
staff at georgia baptist hospital, and her mother is a
homemaker.

like the saliers, the rays begat go-getters. one of amy's
sisters is a
resident in the hospitals affiliated with emory university's
school of
medicine, her younger brother is in emory med school, and
anther sister,
after a few years of molecular biology, dropped medicine to
run her own
"wearable art" clothing store in durham, n.c.

a pistol, amy ray was writing her own plays by second grade.
because she
would rush through classroom assignments in order to sit and
socialize
before the bell, she picked up the nickname "rush ray" in
elementary
school, a name that still applies.

amy learned the flute and, about age 12, in an ironic
parallel, she
            heard
the call of the ywca guitar class.

as a high schooler, with an amplifier her parents helped
buy, amy also
played at a few restaurants, like big al's, a short-order
joint in
decatur, and dante's down the hatch. she also performed in
the family's
            methodist church.

she and emily saliers had been acquaintances for years,
friendly but
            never
running in the same circles. amy, in fact, despised emily in
grade
            school,
jealous of her more advanced musical abilities. they didn't
become a
musical duo on any routine basis until late in high school.

unlike emily, the aggressive amy was a natural at high
school survival.
elected president of her 10th and 11th  grade classes, she
ran cross
country and track, played flute in the marching band, shot
photos for
            the
yearbook, sang in the concert choir. her senior class voted
her best
leader. like emily, she was a senior superlative.

"she's always had a tremendous amount of energy. she is a
worker," her
mother says. "she's always told us there are other people
more musically
talented than she is, but that she wants to do this more
than other
            people."

good for them.  i hope it helps reopen trade with cuba.  i saw the results of
an un/us economic embargo first hand in haiti.  to this day, i have nightmares
because of all the suffering our embargo caused to innocent children in that
poorest of caribean nations.  we always impose economic sanctions in an effort
to target corrupt dictators.  i did not see corrupt government officials
suffering much.  only the poor drank filthy water  and went without power and
waded through two feet of garbage in the streets.

hello!
okay, a list of random ig related information...
first, i'm still looking for a boot from the cincinnati suffragette
sessions show from august 1998. at bogart's. great show! let me know if
you've got a copy...we can trade or i can send a sase. thanks!
second, this ig commercial. is it on tv? or the radio? i'd love to
see/hear it. what channel have people seen it on? :)
third, for those indigohio fans (central ohio, at least). my local tv
guide says ig will be on austin city limits this saturday at 6pm. along
with kim richey. of course, last time the ig were supposed to be on acl
here in columbus, they weren't. i don't know where the tv guide gets its
info. :) anyway, thought you'd like to know. i know where i'll be--right
smack in front of my tv. :)
okay, that's all! have a good day!

well, yeowch.
if you don't live in boston, now would be a good time to journey on
over.

sat. 2/20, rose polenzani will be performing at the sommerville theater
as part of a songwriter's festival.  there are several other performers
on the bill. tickets are $16.50, show is at 7.

sun. 2/21 rose plays an intimate house show at elaine bean's home; sonia
tetlow opens. 3pm, $12. $6 if you show a ticket stub from the
sommerville show. freeeee if you show stubs from sommerville and last
week's show at club passim.

later that evening, sonia will be performing with local "folk diva"
faith soloway at someplace else (ryles jazz club), 212 hampshire st,
cambridge.  this show's at 7pm and is only $7. (i found this show while
randomly surfing online).

even later that night, there's gonna be yet another amazing show:
>2/21 toad, cambridge ma (mass ave, in porter sq.)
>21+ bar
>8pm erin meckewon
>9pm megan toohey
>10pm ian kenndey
>11pm rose polenzani (2 sets)
>maybe other special guests
(info courtesy of gabriel unger, rose's manager, who asked me to forward
it along to you guys)

*three* shows in one day?!
this sounds like such an unbelieveable opportunity to catch some amazing
music. i personally am taking a train from cleveland (that's 16 hours,
one way, livin' it up in amtrak's coach cars). (i actually had planned
the trip long before i heard about all these sunday shows; i was just
goin' ta see rose. and now i find out all this!).  all you atlantans
might want to go to http://www.airtran.com , as this is that cheapo
airline that will fly you in and out of atlanta for $57 one-way. but
everybody else too, you should definitely attempt this as a roadtrip, or
a train trip, or a hitchhike, or anything possible. 4 shows in one
weekend, 3 of them tiny tiny intimate and general admission???  you
gotta come.

anyone who manages to come up with a good tape of the acl appearance, the
commercial and vh1 thing could become very popular on this list (hint, hint).
clare got me a video from someone on ebay that has an acl appearance plus the
letterman appearance when they played "bury my heart..."  the quality (or lack
thereof) of this video absolutely broke my heart.  i had a good thing going,
taping different appearances on one tape, but i screwed it up and i haven't
been the same since.  when i set my vcr to catch the ellen episode, i didn't
allow enough tape for it to back up (i don't know why it does that) and i
ended up cutting off the last half of my letterman bit.  i guess i'm more
interested in video of ig, as opposed to concert boots.  so, anyone who has
video appearances,  i would certainly make a generous trade for them, like two
blank tapes or whatever else. just let me know when you want to do business --
i know these appearances (and others i'm not aware of) are out there
somewhere!

"indigo girls headed for cuba
"music bridges ... over troubled waters" is a project of
california songwriter alan roy scott that next month will send the
lesbian duo indigo girls and some 30 other u.s. musicians for a week
of song-writing in collaboration with artists in cuba. a cultural
exchange license was granted last week; previously, u.s.-cuban
collaborations had been prohibited as part of the 40-year-old u.s.
trade embargo. the visit will culminate in a free concert on march 28
in the karl marx theater in havana. last year, three southern high
schools canceled free appearances by the indigo girls. "

u.s. artists confirmed for cuban festival

jimmy buffett, public enemy's chuck d, joan osborne, the indigo
girls, me'shell ndegeocello, r.e.m.'s peter buck, and former police
members stewart copeland and andy summers are among the american
artists tapped to perform at a weeklong music festival in havana,
cuba. the american musicians will be randomly paired with cuban
musicians, spending the week of march 21-28 writing songs, before
performing a massive concert on march 28.

the event, sponsored by the non-profit organization music bridges
around the world, will be the first officially sanctioned event in
the island country since 1979's havana jams, at which billy joel,
kris kristofferson, and rita coolidge appeared. kristofferson is
scheduled to appear at this year's jam as well.

the concert has been in the planning stages for over a year, and
has received approval from the u.s. treasury department, the cuban
ministry of culture, and the cuban music institute. a spokesman for
music bridges confirms that none of the musicians is being paid for
participating.

the festival's organizer, alan roy scott, is a los angeles-based
songwriter who has overseen similar music events in the soviet
union, romania, bali, and ireland. "the reason i'm doing this in
cuba is the same reason i did it in russia," he tells the miami
herald. "we all share one planet. music is a great communicator,
and it reaches a level that transcends everything else."

other artists music bridges is reportedly inviting include sting,
bonnie raitt, and peter gabriel, the latter of whom is no stranger
to large music festivals having masterminded the massive world
music festival womad. mavericks singer raul malo, a cuban-american,
is trying to rearrange his schedule in order to attend.

january 1990 -- atlanta magazine

             mood indigo
             by melissa harris

[clip]

third among four kids, amy was born in atlanta in april 1964 to frances
and larry ray. her father is a radiologist and president of
the medical
staff at georgia baptist hospital, and her mother is a
homemaker.

like the saliers, the rays begat go-getters. one of amy's
sisters is a
resident in the hospitals affiliated with emory university's
school of
medicine, her younger brother is in emory med school, and
anther sister,
after a few years of molecular biology, dropped medicine to
run her own
"wearable art" clothing store in durham, n.c.

a pistol, amy ray was writing her own plays by second grade.
because she
would rush through classroom assignments in order to sit and
socialize
before the bell, she picked up the nickname "rush ray" in
elementary
school, a name that still applies.

amy learned the flute and, about age 12, in an ironic
parallel, she
             heard
the call of the ywca guitar class.

as a high schooler, with an amplifier her parents helped
buy, amy also
played at a few restaurants, like big al's, a short-order
joint in
decatur, and dante's down the hatch. she also performed in
the family's
             methodist church.

she and emily saliers had been acquaintances for years,
friendly but
             never
running in the same circles. amy, in fact, despised emily in
grade
             school,
jealous of her more advanced musical abilities. they didn't
become a
musical duo on any routine basis until late in high school.

unlike emily, the aggressive amy was a natural at high
school survival.
elected president of her 10th and 11th  grade classes, she
ran cross
country and track, played flute in the marching band, shot
photos for
             the
yearbook, sang in the concert choir. her senior class voted
her best
leader. like emily, she was a senior superlative.

"she's always had a tremendous amount of energy. she is a
worker," her
mother says. "she's always told us there are other people
more musically
talented than she is, but that she wants to do this more
than other
             people." >>

channels.  i guess it was the right place at the right time.  now i just
hope that someone else out there gets it and tapes it!
remember it was really only emily talking (about let it be me), but amy

fingers crossed we get this taped...

hee.  it's *good*.  i taped it, in case anyone's desperate.  very funny.  *very*
funny.  here's my favorite amy quote:

"haaaapy birthdaaaay dear lisa, happy birthday toooo yoooou...yeah. y'all give
her a big hand.  she's 10."

they also sang happy birthday to someone named ms. keebler.  some footage from
watershed and that video yearbook thing.  a bit of interview i hadn't seen
before too.

so it's about 4 minutes long and starts at about 16 or 17 minutes into the show.

happy taping...

as i didn't see this, i have no idea what clip was shown. so i'm gonna
speculate-- was it from a show at agnes scott in the 80's, where they're
singing happy birthday to a girl in the audience? (i have this boot,
with them and michelle malone, where they get a probably-19-year-old
malone on stage with them and sing happy birthday to some little girl in
the crowd).

who do i know who taped this?

oh my god, it's the footage from my booooooooooot.
marivel, i need this tape.
i am desperate.
*really* desperate.

(now how random is that?!)
for anyone who's wondering and maybe vh-1 didn't tell ya, the
abovementioned footage is from the following show:
decatur square, decatur ga, 5-9-87. they were playing for the agnes
scottie grads.  was michelle malone in the footage too?
(smacking head against cinder block dorm walls) why <*thunk*> did i
crash <*thud*> at 6:30 <*blam*>?!

...so, this means that there's a whole video of the whole show out there
*somewhere*.  ("somewhere" perhaps being in frances ray's hands and
therefore unattainable. but at least it's out there.  which gives me
some odd contentment, that the work is being preserved. anyhow.)

janet!  great stuff, how was it recorded?

i encourage those of you who haven't checked this out to do so... a
highlight is the most fully-realized version of the "soy/brown eyed girl"
medley that i've heard.  for those of you who can't take the time to grab
winamp <http://www.winamp.com> and download the 45 mb worth of mp3s
(contact janet at for the ftp details... i just let mine dl overnight), i
hope to tree this show when i finish working on the (non-ig) tape tree i'm
working on now.

thanks, janet, looking forward to the next set!

i'm always intriged by amy's "different-hairstyle-for-each-album". you can
really tell what period a picture is from by her hair. my favorite hairstyle
is the shaming of the sun one, second choice would be swamp opheila. i don't
think she look her best with longer hair. what do y'all think?

sets of mp3s.  please do not post the address on the web, in email
lists, or to news groups.

also, please be considerate and if you are part of a group that can
easily share files, consider designating one person to download the

performance of lesbian play banned

charlotte, n.c. (ap) - organizers of a festival honoring promising young
playwrights have excluded one of five winning entries from tonight's
performances because its central characters are lesbians. the festival
sponsors, children's theatre of charlotte and charlotte-mecklenburg
schools, said discussion of sexual orientation was not appropriate for the
program's middle and high school audiences. the sponsors had told students
in advance that winners could be deemed inappropriate for production. the
play is about two adult women, one visually impaired, who meet, talk and
fall in love. "i still consider it discrimination," said samantha gellar,
17, whose play "life versus the paperback romance" won't be performed at
the charlotte young playwrights festival. ###

...that is indeed michelle malone celebrating her birthday (i'm thinking
it was her 20th, though) in that video, and she looks  nothing like she
does now.  i haven't seen the vh1 clip, but i'm sure it's much better
quality than what i have, since it was shown on tv.  a friend made a me
an ig compliation tape a couple of years ago,  which includes the whole
decatur on the square concert, but my copy of the decatur show is so
many generations down the line, and so poor a copy, that you can barely
see it, and the sound is pretty warbly.  the friend who made the tape
for me used to be on the list, and once told me she got a copy of the
decatur show from someone on the list.  there must be a decent, viewable
copy out there somewhere.  i would offer to copy mine, but 1) i only
have one vcr, and 2), a copy made from mine would probably not even be
viewable.

they do sing happy birthday to a mrs. keebler (a popular teacher, i
gathered), and wish a happy b-day to michelle.  amy does a very inspired
version of romeo and juliet, and at one point michelle shares amy's mic
singing harmony during killing time (and boy, does that smoke!;).  most
of the songs they played were unreleased songs.  i haven't watched the
tape in a while, so i don't remember what all they sang.

it might be a good idea to watch e-bay for stuff like that.  for
example, two weeks or so ago, someone offered what they said was a first
or second generation or so copy of the university of pennsylvania show
in 1991 (which also includes a great version of r&j).  since the copy i
have on my compilation tape is very poor and obviously shot with a
handi-cam, i bid on the e-bay video, but lost out when the bidding went
to $18.  i wrote the girl and asked if she was going to offer any more
copies of the show and she said she probably would soon.  i haven't
checked lately, but that can be a good source of priceless ig footage
(and other neat ig stuff).  someone also offered a video of the june
1992 beacon theatre show on e-bay during the last month.  e-bay's web
site is http://ebay.com

peace!

on the subject of amy's hair, i've gotta add my 2 cents....needless to

definitely be shaming of the sun.

                       yes!!!!!
do you think that's what they meant? did anyone else find that slightly
offensive, i mean it was so inuendo-y or something. like they can't come right
out and say it but they sort of leer about it. i don't know, maybe i'm overly

greetings, indigo friends.

i have a favor to ask.  sorry for the nigc--i don't know of another
audience where i can so easily reach this many people who might be able to
help me out.  i need some information for a paper that i have to present at
a conference in a few weeks:

can anyone think of "lesbian references" in any recent pop songs?  by
"lesbian references," i mean someone singing about lesbians or lesbian sex
or a woman referencing her girlfriend, etc.  i'm really looking for
mainstream songs, like sophie b. hawkins' "damn, i wish i was your lover,"
which has a line that includes a reference to "making love to her" by the
oceanside or something like that.  i've also thought of that jill sobule
song, "i kissed a girl" and the white town song, "(i could never be) your
woman."  can you all think of any more?  also any tv, advertisement, or
popular novel references would be good.  i would really appreciate it!!!
thanks!!

please reply only to me, since the whole list probably doesn't care and
also because i'm not on this list anymore (only the news), so i wouldn't
get it anyway.  :)

thanks!

i can't remember if i sent this (or something similar) yesterday - i was
sort of out of it...in any case...i was watching both the live at the
uptown lounge and watershed vids yesterday and therefore saw amy's hair in
many states...and i drooled every time *hee* so apparently with amy...she
could do pretty much anything with her hair and i wouldn't care...just not
totally bald.  i can't see her with that...really really short?  fine.
but not bald.

em, on the other hand...i can't stand it if it's much less than shoulder
length.  i think it has to do with my perceptions (i know...well duh.)
lemme explain...i view em as the romantic one...and that is the part of me
that identifies with her songs.  in my mind i see romantic =
flowing...locks, clothes, music...that sort of thing.  amy i see as
gut-wrenching as well as brooding which are two different images in my
mind....cut-off as well as hidden (respectively)...so i like it whether
her hair is cut off or long and hiding her face (well give us glimopses of
that cutey face every now and again amy!)....

okay maybe i am psychoanalyzing myself a wee-bit today :)

mime-version: 1.0
content-type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

before we begin: what do you all think about this version of chickenman?  it's
weird and disconected, and almost seems embarrassingly bad . . . but then like
half way through, that turns into a rawness that becomes, well, awesome!  any
comments?

i'd also like to say that watching this video has brought back my memories of
cramming for that damn bio sat test while the radio broadcast played.  i have
one word of advice: avoid the princeton review like the black death!

well, so maybe i didn't have a set list.  but i do have the video, which i'm
getting the songs from right now!  here we go:

great woods 6/6/97

1.  secure yourself
2.  it's alright
3.  shame on you
4.  least complicated
5.  don't give that girl a gun
6.  caramia  (you know you're obsessed when you identify the song before they
start playing)
7.  i don't wanna know
8.  ghost
9.  scooter boys
10. get out the map
11. this train revised
12. burn all the letters
13. danielle howe comes out and does some unidentified song
14. leeds
15. shed your skin
16. everything in its own time
17. chickenman!!! (with mr buzzard soc)
(i'm not obsessed, i'm not obsessed...)
(maybe i am)
(anyhow...)
18. galileo
*encore*
19. hey kind friend
20. wild horses (w/michelle malone)
21. bury my heart at wounded knee
22. closer to fine

on a personal note, this version of closer to fine is one i hold a special
place for in my heart.  lying there on my sofa bed by my desk, listening to
this awesome show i was missing out on because of that damn bio sat (and i was
just recovering from a four month bout with extreme mono), i had been kind of
depressed.  but suddenly, ctf came on, and it all made sense!  i finally
understood what the song was about.  i cried i was so happy, because i
realised i was going to be okay.  there i'd been, less than a week before,
seeing ig in hartford on my 15th birthday and getting a guitar pick from
emily.  and now here i was, stuck studying for this damn test. .  . but it was
going to be okay!  =)

shutting up ~

mime-version: 1.0
content-type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

now, i know that emily rarely changes her hairstyle, but i was looking
through some of the pics in the cds...and i noticed some real subtle
differences in her hair style:

1. her hair on the cover of the strange fire cd is horrible..it looks
like a style from the 1800's (not that amy's hair is that great then
with)...but, hey it was the 80's and any kind of hairstyle was in style

2. ig..it looks like emily just rolled out of bed, brushed once and
went to the photo shoot...but it still was the 80's :-)

3. n*i*s...i loved her hair during this period...especially on page 13
of the cd booklet...her hair is done all chic...like she actually
cared how it looked..she just looks hot..and the way she is looking at
the camera...this is definitely my favorite emily pic...this style
carries on through the back on the bus y'all album

4. rites of passage..this is essentially the same haircut...but it
looks like she had it clipped a little higher off her shoulders and
more closely to her head...it doesn't look as full....it also looks
more red

5. swamp ophelia...i have the so poster on my wall...it's the same one
that pops up in the movie "scream"..and i completely dislike her hair
in this phase...it's the time when emily went short and amy went
shorter...i don't like it at all..it's too close to her head...it
looks like she is wearing a helmet

6. shaming of the sun...emily got rid of the curls as best as she
could and went straight (oh no!!! hehehe)...i like her hair now...it's
much more la mode

anyone else have any opinions on emily's hair???

steph :-)

i have always found mle's "i want to come over" to be a rather obviously
lesbian song.  this rather conservative girl i know said to me (while the song
was getting a lot of air play), "whenever i listen to that song, its so creepy
when i remember she's singing about a woman.  because it's just like she's
singing to a guy, but no."  yeah, it always surprises me that a woman who
isn't straight could identify with "i know your friend/you told her about
me/she filled you with fear/some kind of sin/how can you turn/denying the fire
. . . i know you're confused/i know that you're shaken/you think we'll be lost
once we begin . . . "  i mean, hello!

*sigh*

you ever notice how dense people can be?  i have met so many women who were
obviously gay to me, but who other people never dream were gay.  i mean, i
know gay-dar and all, but i'm talking about women with buzz cuts and pink
triangles on their office doors.  on the one hand, it's good it's not an
issue, but at the same time it seems many people are almost in denial when
something "different" is put in front of them in the context of something
normal, like a person, or a top 40 song.

okay, well, as long as we're talking about hair, i was wondering what everyone
thinks about amy's various fashion incarnations. i think she's had maybe two
stages, the "jangling beads and silver rings" multipe necklaces stage and her
current fairly sleek slightly seventies (big ol' collars and flared pants )
stage. of course ripped jeans, tee shirts and over shirts have always been
mixed in. so what do you all prefer?

the last concert i saw was a couple years ago at jazz fest (the louisianna
jazz and heritage festival, in new orleans).  they did a daytime show at the
fairgrounds (the racetrack where the fest is held for two weekends), then a
night time show at the lakefront arena.  i was sitting beside a woman, and we
got to talking... she was straight, but called herself a "fruit fly" because
of her affinity for gay folk.  anyway, the guy playing guitar behind amy was
wearing a dress.  it wasn't like a drag-thing; he was quite a hairy guy not at
all trying to pass as a woman.  amy introduced the band, and commented that
the dress-wearing guy was "secure in his masculinity".  i can't remember who
he was.  anyway, flash forward to the great wood, mass.  concert.  i have it
on tape from ppv.  jerry marotta, the drummer that's pretty much always with
them, was wearing a skirt.  no kidding.  did anyone else see this?  it looks
like these guys didn't want their movements restricted.  it does make a
statement, but in the great woods concert, jerry doesn't come out from behind
his drums, so it's not like he was trying to be noticed for it.  clare and i
argued about it through three or four viewings of the tape, and i won.  he is
definitely wearing a skirt.  has this ever been discussed on the list?  i
thought it might be a fun thread.

i've been meaning to bounce this off the list for a long time but i keep
forgetting.  i can't possibly be the only one to have thought of this.  i'm
trying to popularize the not-yet-a-word-that-i-know-of word:  "lesband" as a
term for one's lesbian spouse.  this would not apply to a girlfriend, only to
the woman one lives with and expects to grow old with.  "lover" sounds too
temporary and emphasizes the sexual aspect.  "lesband" would refer to a more
permanent and domestic relationship, certainly including a sexual
relationship, but not defined by it.  any thoughts?  now i expect to see all
you "married" lesbians out there to include your "lesbands" in your posts. i'm
sure you all know about my lesband, clare.  right, like you care.  oh well, it
beats cleaning the cat box.

i had the same initial reaction that janene and sarah had.  i couldn't
figure out what the announcer's point was, by showing a closeup of emily
in a yearbook photo, saying that she knew what she wanted out of life
early on, and then zooming out and it is a picture of em casting a
sideways glance (with kind of an evil grin on her face) at a girl
sitting next her in the library.  i was wondering if there might be some
other point to it than the obvious, but i guess not.  funny thing is, em
says she didn't know until she was in college, while amy already knew in
high school. anyway, i think that kind of spoiled the piece a bit.
except for the grammy and decatur square footage, all of the video is
from the watershed home video.  loved those yearbook photos and the
discussion of their extracurricular activities. those were very
enlightening. they were go-getters from early on.

peace!

hi all,

several years back, i was talking to amy after a show- kind of
whispering in her ear, and her hair was blowing in my face.
that moment rocked my world.

so, um, i would have to say that i definately love her hair... long.

                              truly, ~ janene

i kinda thought that discussing this stuff would be considered a no-go for
this list...but i just wanted to say that it always struck me as odd that
they went for the made-up, almost pretty thing on n*i*s only. we never see
them looking this made up again. i like it a lot though. i like that they
both look somehow softer. amy's hair is cool in particular. and they seem to
be posing a bit more in those photos in a way that i feel didn't happen
again until the two issues of curve magazine last year which are among my
favourite photos of the girls. so, definitely amy with longer hair. i didn't
like the near-bowl cut she had but adored the marching band jacket from rop
days. i also love that photo from the ig era which from memory is only in
the song book where they're lounging on steps. amy's legs look so long. i
think that was the first photo where i thought, 'yeah...amy...she's the
one.' :-)

helen - who's finally back on the list after all this time...

i figured while i was posting i might as well make mention of the bootleg
page.  many people had inquired into having thier list posted or their page
linked to the bootleg page.  i was having serious computer issues and i had to
buy a new computer (sony really screwed me over, but that is another issue)
anyways...so now i am back and can update the page. so if you would like to be
linked or have your page posted please let me know.

have been reading it for a week or so now, and i have been anxious to
ask a question.  i know it may seem like a silly question to everyone
else out there, but i was wondering were i could get a copy of jesus
christ superstar.  i am not sure if this is a hard to obtain recording
or what the situation is.  i do know that i am dying to hear it.  so
if you guys could help me out, that would be great.  thanks a lot.
