i have to say, that i like the ripped jeans and tea shirt stuff, but the
band uniform jacket was really hot too, the thing is, i like to see her just
being her...you know what i mean...no, put on out fits for show, just amy in
all of her normal wonderful poetic peace loving self...i think that is what
i love about ig.....there is so much in their music about their lives, that
it makes you realize that you are just as normal as the next guy....you know
what i mean? it helps you to realize that all of the pain and aggravation is
just normal we all go through it and they then set the example of it being
ok(in emily's words...it's alright!!!)....i think i like the look she had at
one of the newport folk fest. pics of the white jeans and navy blue shirt
the best....amy just looks so great with that shoulder length hair, and
tight jeans and of course i think blue is her best color...any takes on that
while we ware delving into this purely physical side of our threads....tee

that's not quite as "good" as the trailer for "6 days, 7 nights":

   announcer: "take a journey..."
anne heche: "something just swum up my pants!"
announcer: "...to the most remote place known to man..."

so - i'm getting out my ig ongoing collage video tape of tv
appearances... and i'm fast forwarding to the end so i can tape this vh1
thing, and i happen to stop and check where i am on the video, and it's
the appearance when they did galileo on good morning america.  i haven't
seen this in a few years, so i'm watching it - remembering how
disappointed i was at the time that they were using a backup band - and
the version is so bad, that amy hits a bad note, and turns around to
look at sara lee, as if to say, "what the hell was that??" right as the
camera does a close up on her face.  i remember at the time being really
disappointed and embarrassed for them, but now i see it, and it just
full-on cracks me up.  anybody else remember that?  and at the end -
they do the last note, and immediately amy turns to emily and says
something like, "i thought we were going to...."  anybody have this tape
and read lips?  i'd love to know what she said.

so to make a short story long, and to add to the "songs i don't like"
list - i have to say that those dissonant harmonies on galileo, during
the "write a book" line and the last "king of insiiiiiiiiight" lines -
just kill that whole song for me.  i wish they'd rewrite those harmonies
or something.  does that bother anyone else?

also - amy - the nis days, definitely - and have you ever seen emily
look prettier than she did for the grammy's?  they looked great that
night - i wish emily would grow her hair back out.  maybe she could do
that squiggly perm, part in the middle thing that's so popular now.  i
think she'd look great like that.  my $.02.

hkf's,

not much info here, but last night in atlanta, at 11:25pm, on 99x - they
played the ig doing the clash song to appear on the upcoming tribute
album... and i'm not sure of the name, but they said "clampdown" a lot, so
that seems like possibly the name...
but anyway, my point is, (besides being freaked out - thoughts were a
racin' - "is this a new song?) my point is... it's not just an ok song - but
it was a really good song...!  it kind of struck me there, sitting in my car
sans any heat, with amy's vocals at the forefront and some nice emily &
geetar in the background...  but like the dj's said, it's great how many
different artists come together for tribute albums and really play their
songs in their own unique style, and not try to simply imitate the
original...

that's all folks...

it is true. but this time it was a private parochial school. not that it
makes it any less hurtful but i think it gives them more latitude in

i was watching the re-run of before they were rock stars last night and
this time i watched the whole thing (i switched it saturday after ig to
finish watching the dixie chicks on austin city limits:) and noticed
that they show ig again while rolling the credits at the end - and it is
in the same order as the show appearance - after barbara streisand.
it's brief, but they show a photo of a high school age emily, and then
probably an early high school age photo of amy - with braces (some of
the emily photos featured during the segment showed her with braces).
no wonder they both have such nice teeth!  so, don't forget to watch the
credits roll...it's very sweet!

peace,

joan :-d

i think this has been mentioned on the list before, but just in case it
hasn't, i thought i would remind atlanta people.  this show is this thursday,
and it's only .99!

*******************************************************************
there's a really exciting show coming up on feb. 25th at the star bar in
little 5 points...

commonwealth
cooper seay
lauren fincham
christian henderson (for those who remember the vld days)
and more!

some notes about this show:

-rumor has it, cooper's going to play electric, which is going to be a rare
treat!  cooper's been writing a bunch of new songs... just when you thought
she couldn't get any better, she pulls out these surprises :)

-commonwealth rocks...  this is the review from creative loafing this past
week's cd release party:

----------------------------------------
decatur's acoustic duet commonwealth celebrates the release of their cd
another roadside attraction, the latest anticipated addition to thelocal
acoustic/folk rock selection. singer/songwriter/guitarists sandi angotti and
kristen damato sing with passionate enthusiasm about life, love, loss and
redemption, something a more prolific local acoustic duet gave up years ago to
become entrepreneurs.
----------------------------------------

my own personal view of commonwealth (in a nut shell) is that they write the
songs that ani difranco *wishes* she could write :)  but seriously, these
girls will influence and shape the acoustic scene of the future.

if you want to order the new cd "another roadside attraction" contact
commonwealth@monsterbit.com

-lauren fincham is an open mike finalist from the infamous eddie's attic open
mic nights and has recently played the have a heart benefit and other shows at
the attic!

hope to see ya there!

this is the last word on personality tests..... its scary how it works
out!  be sure to follow the directions exactly....

get a pen and paper, and number 1 through 6.

next to 1, write any number.

next to 2, write the name of a celebrity you are really attracted to.

next to 3, write any color you think of.

next to 4, write the name of your first pet.

next to 5 and 6, write the name of any two family members.

ready?

now, scroll down....
*
*
*
*
*
*
*
*
*
keep going...
*
*
*
*
*
*
ok! ready for the answers?

number one is the number of times you should be hit over the head with
a baseball bat for thinking stupid emails like this actually mean
anything.

number two is a celebrity who will never sleep with you because you
actually were dumb enough to waste your time on something like this.

the color you picked means nothing. it's just a friggin' color.

number four is the name of a dead animal.

numbers five and six are two people very embarassed to be related to
you.

pass this on to everyone you know, so they can feel like a schmuck too.

well, "bon" means good, and "vivre" means to live - i think it's something
along the lines of living well. . .but don't take my word for it, it's been
two years since i've had anything to do with learning, reading, writing, or
speaking french.

i have always known it to mean something along the lines of "lively, cheery,
and ready for action" -- the absolute opposite of me right now.  i'm editor of
my school newspaper, and my inept advisor announced at about 4:15 we have
"like less than $150" and can't afford to pubish the issue we were about to
mail.  maybe there was a better time to tell us?!?!  i once had an advisor who
was psycho and manipulative, and though not much was accomplished, she never
actively ran us into the ground.  well, maybe she did.  but better through
stupid action that no action at all, i say.

maybe it is becuase recently, i have been pressed for time and not have been
reading my posts for the last couple of weeks. but, today, i was driving to
work, when none other that ig's new song on the radio.  being new music
thursday on wxrt radio in chicago, the dj (right before the break) said, "we
have the new one from indigo girls coming up next."  i almost ran off the
road!  when i finally heard it, my first impression of the song was just
"o.k".  i find this a little strange because, normally, i love an ig song the
second i hear it.  there's never a "aww, it will grow on me" period.

has anyone else heard it yet?  email me privately w/your thought of it.
thanks.

i've been thinking about this for a few days and thought some of you
might have an answer or want to make a comment.

from what i've seen in album covers and as far as i know, ig songs are
always credited to either emily or amy, and never both.  have they ever
tried to write a song together?  and, how much input does the other person
have in the creation of the song since, of course, she has her own guitar
chords to play and harmony to sing?  i wonder if one has ever written
something and then after they both talked and played it through it changed
a lot and then it wasn't really the original song anymore.  maybe they
just always credit the original writer, no matter how much the song may
change?  or maybe the other person never really suggests any changes
because the songs are always so good.  do they try really hard to stay out
of each other's creative process?

anyone have any answers or thoughts?  or know of a song that they wrote
together?

thanks,
lisa

they have written the following together:

blood quantum
i'll give you my skin (w/michael stipe)
if you live like that

they say that they write their songs seperately and then work together on
the arrangement.

don't forget "i wanna be your lover". my understanding is that amy
wrote the original song, and then emily totally rewrote the lyrics, so i'm
not sure it exactly counts as a collaboration....

i was browsing today and i actually came across this:

amy and emily generally write separately and then collaborate on the
harmonies and instrumental arrangements of their songs.  however,
there are a few songs that they have written together:
    - "i don't know your name" from "blue food" (1985)
    - "if you live like that" from "blue food" (1985)
    - "blood quantum" from "honor1: a benefit for the honor the
        earth campaign" (1996)

that has to be the song they covered in the clash tribune album. i was at work
and heard the dj said she's going to play it, but then i was called into a
meeting and must have missed it. :(

- "i don't know your name" from "blue food" (1985)

the correct name for this song is "i wanna be your lover"... just
thought i'd let everyone know, so that no one has conniptions thinking
there's another song out there they haven't heard.  *smile*

you can usually snag a copy off of ebay if you wait around for
awhile. and don't pay more than $15 for it, maximum; sometimes, things get
bid up way beyond their normal going rate, and if that's the case it;s
best to just wait it out until another one comes along. especially with
this album, since it gets offered a lot.
        mandy

p.s. in case you've never used ebay, the url is www.ebay.com, and
it doesn't involve sending credit card numbers over the net.

don't want to get into a fist fight here, but "i don't know your name" isn't
wrong: the blue food inlay titles it that way, see
http://www.netreach.net/~andineil/igs/rc/rc.htm for proof...

and, to inject some positivity into this, the same source quotes the writers
of this song as saliers/ray (emily wrote the words, amy the music) and "if
you live like that" as ray/saliers. one could either infer that their roles
were reveresd, or that they're just being democratic or plain not caring,
unsuspecting hundreds of people would be spending too much of their time
discussing things like this fifteen years later...

not sure about the book. i'd say 'proably but it'll be a while coming...'

buffy's version of "bury my heart..." is on a couple of things, but your
best bet is her 'up where we belong' cd (emi 7243 8 35059 2 0 - not sure if
that's a uk, usa or canada or universal number). it's got most of her well
known songs, rerecorded, including the title track and songs that donovan
("universal soldier") and elvis ("until it's time for you to go") made
famous.

album with uncle john's band is readily available? sherlyn koo very kindly
taped a whole bunch of these sorts of things a couple of years ago and i'm
now trying to track them down. finally found joan baez's ring them bells
with the sublime version of don't think twice it's allright on it...gotta
slowly try and find the rest now...

also, for the people who've heard their clash cover, what's the general
opinion? descriptions please!!!

well, www.cdnow.com has it... if you search the net a little i'm sure there
are still some 'spend $20 get $10 off' ecoupons around too!

and speaking of which... my next project is going to be an igs rarities
collection (probably gonna be 3 or 4 cds worth...) and i was wondering what
the reaction would be to the suggestion of a cdrtree in addition to tape
trees...

i've just remastered blue food. it's by no means perfect, but what are ya
gonna do... i added a few extra tracks and unmodestly called it early
recordings 4. so if this idea takes off, then that'll be the first cd tree
thing...

let us know what ya think and all...

for those of you who don't have this - get it, because this is a great
album!  joan does "welcome me", "jesse" with janis ian, "you're aging
well" with dar, and "diamonds & rust" with mary c. carpenter, and as
helen mentions "don't think twice it's alright with a&e - not to mention
there is a wonderful pic (but small) of amy, emily, and joan all sitting
and playing their guitars and smiling in the cd booklet.  get this
album.

i read once that they write seperately and then once the piece is
finished they come together and work out the kinks... something about it
would be too much togetherness if they wrote their songs together too.

hey everyone..

just a small indigo glory kinda thing:

i bought the grateful dead tribute cd..years ago.. i think the only reason i
bought it was cause the friend i was shopping with though the grateful dead
were cool. i remember playing it all of 2 times. i have no recollection of who
all contributed on it. it has since been sitting in my cd cabinet.. untouched
by human hands. it was only by luck about a month ago that i discovered it
again.. and realized that the indigo girls were on it. imagine my shock!

oh well.. i guess life is good at handing us small treasures when we least
expect it

hmmm, anyone know what they meant by saying they traded in their street
wear for a more sleek new york look?  i've always thought they *didn't*
really do that...though they do seem to perform in different outfits
then they wore earlier...but that might be for the "freshness" factor.
but still, i wouldn't necessarily call it "sleek ny look."  sure, amy
wears polyester shirts...but those were sleek 20 years ago....
but also...maybe the comment had more to do not w/ clothing, but w/
location...cuz they showed the park, then the crazy game lifeblood
sequence where thy show them at cbgb's in ny.  but it seemed to mention
clothes...didn't they use the word "garb?"  (i forgot my tape).

jacket records president gail gellman states, "needless to say, we are very
excited to release vonda's record and are thrilled to work with navarre again.
these are challenging times in the music industry and independent releases
need the support of a good distributor. navarre is the best."

traditional and e-commerce retail sites. navarre corporation's major business

states and now canada; arm which distributes major label music to non-

you can tell it's a vonda shepard song and not an emily song; it
things had been otherwise, the song would be called "baby don't you break

i was really seriously considering driving down to nashville to attend
this show.  however, not it looks like i can't go since it is a monday
night (i wish it was on the weekend).

i really wanted to go for 2 reasons.  1) the obvious- the indigo girls,
but 2), i have been a long time opponent of the death penalty.  it is an
issue that is so controversial at my school (most people here support it),
and within my family (about half and half).  i just believe that it
epitomizes human rights violations, and cruel and unusual punishment.

anyway, if you are interested in doing more anti death penalty work,
amnesty international's big campaign this year focuses on human rights
violetions in the united states.  capital punishment is one thing that
they are working to eliminate (it is one whole aspect of the campaign --
police brutality, refugees, juvinille punishment, and super-max prisons
are the other aspects of the campaign).  anyway, just my small plug for
ai.  if you have any questions about ai, please feel free to e-mail me.  i
have been a member for a while now (pres of my school's group), and have
done plenty of volunteering and attending ai's confrences.

:-) karen (who has had the flu and bronchitis for the past week.  augggg!)

i'm pretty sure that amy hasn't really cared about clothes...she probably
thinks like what we all think about clothes -->sure we like to look good and
hip, but in the end, we really just want to be comfortable.

like right now, amy has worn those brown pants to death (almost looks like my
brown nat'l park service / forestry uniform pants) -- the ones she lost a
button from the fly?zipper?  also, i'm no chic dresser, but/and i love the way
amy wears that brown striped, big collar shirt.  she's worn it a lot, and
maybe that's what i love.  if i had my way, i'd just have 5 outfits total
until they were worn out...to me there's no need to have so many clothes...too
many possessions!  urgh!

understanding is that those deadheads really know their booting business.

hey y'all...

i'm not a normal ig lister, but i've been asked to get in touch with the
group to relay a little scheme that we've been brainstorming over at hte.

as you all may know, the next honor tour is currently in the planning stages
for the year 2000.  this has been somewhat of an experimental year for us,
as we haven't had tour funds to depend on in the realms of grants and
keeping ourselves going as a free standing organization.  we've done well.
however, as next years tour dates grow closer, we find ourselves in
desperate need of funds to manifest our visions.  the tour itself will cost
over one hundred thousand dollars to bring to the stage, and we are not
financially prepared at this time to make such a large investment.  faye,
winona and the crew are working constantly with the issues, and don't have
the time for a large fundraising campaign.

here's where you come in.  i know that in the past years the list has
donated significant amounts of money to different organizations in amy or
emily's name, in celebration of their birthdays.  i also know (first hand)
that hte has already been one of the recipients of your incredible
generosity.  we ask for your help again.  i recognize that there may be some
indecision concerning a repetition, but i sincerely hope it can be
overlooked.  amy's birthday is april 12th.  if everyone agrees, we'd like to
get this going soon.  please email me with thoughts, comments & questions.
we thank you so much for your consideration.

take care,

greta gohn & the honor the earth staff

...if you're not familiar with the goals & purpose of honor the earth,
please feel free to get in touch with me.  i can send you some literature &
answer any questions you may have.

i thought he was refering to the fact that in the older video in the park
they were (especially amy) wearing hideous '80s clothes, and amy had kind of
big hair (having been born in 1982, i feel i can pass judgement rather safely
<g>) . . . but then in the show in nyc, amy's wearing jeans and a black t-
shirt, and has a more "traditional" hair cut.  emily has gone through a
similar transformation.
i also would like to add, i believe amy is actually concerned with her
appearance.  maybe not in a stage way that has her wearing a different outfit
every night, but in a way that has her wearing spiffy clothes in public.  at
that wand event in may, she was dressed *very* fashionably, and i would be
surprised if she had not put a great deal of effort into choosing her outfit.
i think she's always wanted to look good, and comfort is a part of that,
rather than something that outways that.

hte is still important to them both, i think, even though they've
moved on to other kinds of benefits. the fact that they've continued to
tour for hte is evidence enough of that. i doubt she'd be offended by a
big contribution to one of her favorite charities just because she happens
to be spending the big day elsewhere. :) it's probably less likely that
we'll be acknowledged publicly for it, but that doesn't strike me as a
very significant argument, especially considering the fact that hte is in
such great need right now.

i think this is a good point - even though i'm anti-death penalty, i think
that donating to an organization that involves a controversial issue
probably wouldn't be as good of an idea as donating to something like hte.
because of that, i think hte would probably get more support from the list
as a whole. . .just my 2 cents.

i would donate my funds to anti-death penalty - i hate the idea of a
death penalty, just as i would also like to see any funds raised be
donated to hte.  why doesn't the list split the money raised between
these two?  if someone does not want their donation to go to anti-death
penalty, then make that specification clear, and your donation will be
added to the funds that will be presented to hte only.  will somone from
the list volunteer to be the "collector"?  or will it make more sense to
just send your contribution directly to the charity?

"what's that?" you say?

well, if you use your imagination.  dixie chicks won best country album for
"wide open spaces", (which, by the way, would have been named "wyde open
spacez" if it were a rap album, but i digress), and in the notes of said
album is a shout-out to the indigo girls, one of the chicks lead singer's
inspirations.

just thought it was pretty cool that ig were mentioned in the best album of
the year.  (country-wise, that is.)

hello kind friends and intimate strangers,

hope y'all are having a great 1999.

i finally got to see ig's appearance on vh-1's before they were rock
stars grammy winners episode.  of course, i can't stop grinning from the
glow i got watching new tv footage on ame and em.  and, when they showed
the bob dylan clips, familiar words flowed from his tongue "tangled up
in blue".  thought that was very ig on vh-1's part.

this past weekend, i was listening to channel 103.1 fm here in l.a., and
this woman was singing, "i am 32 flavors and then some..." and it
finally clicked that this phrase is a lyric...i think it was tori amos
covering ani difranco (or vice versa).  so, an audra moment if you will.

diane ~ who keeps hearing in her head tonight, "she may go on and about,
but she always come shining back and it's true, i'll wait for you."
and, "i would i would i would i..." (chantal kreviazuk).

i'm listening right now to nanci griffth's "flyer".   it's such a good
album.  i'm sure this has been mentioned on this list that a&e sing very
clearly on two of the songs on this album (time of inconvenience and
these days in an open book), and jerry marotta plays on it as well.
this is a just a good album, regardless of whether they sing on it.
give it a listen if you can.
