hey,
well i was in a hotel room with 10 of my friends cuz i was on a lacrosse trip
with me team and we were watching saturday night live.  they were kinda making
fun of xena and this woman asked her out cuz you know how in the beginning the
audience asks the host questions and stuff.  anyway the lady had an indigo
girls shirt on.  i thought it was kinda funny and all my friends know that i'm
obsessed so everyone started cracking up.  well, anyway i'll shut up now.

in philosophy class on friday, my teacher was beginning a discussion on death
and immortality.  as an intro to the unit he asked "so, do any of you like the
indigo girls?"  my friend and i almost started jumping up and down.  then he
played galileo for us.  the rest of the class must have thought we were crazy,
cause the 2 of us were mouthing the words to each other the entire time:+)  i
had had an awful day up till then, so it was great!

couple of questions:
anyone know if it is still possible anywhere to get
any of the songbooks besides strange fire and rites
of passage and 1200 curfews? someone tried to order
them for me as a gift and were told that rites is the
only one still being printed (and i happened to find
strange fire at a used book store).
question #2 could anyone tell me which songs are
included in the 1200 curfews songbook?
thanks,

hey again y'all,

i've been checking up to see the responses to my last post, and almost all
seem positive...what we need to know now is if, in all seriousness, we could
begin to get this thing together.  we realize that many of you don't know
about the goals of hte, and what we have our sights set on at the
moment...but again, i'd be pleased to answer any questions that you may
have.  to all of you who have written me for more info, i'll get it in the
mail tomorrow.

...something that i should probably point out, that i'm not sure if i
covered or not in my last post is that you all (i'm speaking to you as ig
fans here, not as political activists) will benefit from these donations.
they could very well make the difference between no tour, a week long tour,
or a month long tour in 2000, depending on the amount of money that we
raise.

i will very happily be the collector, and convey your good wishes to both
amy and emily.  i realize that a presentation has been held in the past, and
i'm sure that could be arranged as well.  what i'm looking for right now are
affermations that you are indeed interested, and, if the answer is to the
affirmative, volunteers to help coordinate the various regions of listees.
hte will donate the official hemp 1997 ig-honor tour posters to the members
of the region that collects the most donations.
please email me if you're interested in lending a hand.

...and be sure to check out our newly updates website at
www.honorearth.com

thanks again!

i got this off the sinead o'connor list, apparently from a publication
titled "music 365":

sinead o'connor: nothing compares to (working with) you

sinead o'connor, currently in the preliminary stages of work on her new
studio
album, is involved in a host of collaborative projects over the coming
months.

[big snip of nigc-related collaborations sinead's been doing]

and female us duo the indigo girls have been in london earlier this month
recording new material with members of sinead's band, most specifically
with
drummer john reynolds at his own studio. a spokeswoman for sinead says she
cannot confirm whether any actual collaborations with sinead have made it
onto
tape yet, but did say that o'connor had been in discussion over
possibilities
with the indigos while they were in town.

although sinead o'connor signed to atlantic records over a year ago -
following her departure from chrysalis after many years and via a short
stay
with sony - no material has yet been released through her new label. an
atlantic spokeswoman confirms that sinead's debut album for the label is
currently in its early stages but that the singer "has been busy trying
out
loads of different things in the studio" including initial work with
eurythmic
dave stewart as producer.

[more nigc snip]

personally, i'm excited -- i hear their collaboration on "last day of our
acquaintance" on lillith this year was amazing!

i know this may be a long shot, but i'm hoping to find someone that may
also be a subscriber to this list.
on nov. 2, 1997 i drove up and saw ig at suny geneseo, geneseo, ny.  there
were a bunch of us that met there, dubbed ourselves the "front row crew",
waited (im)patiently at the doors and froze our butts off to get the front
row.  it was, needless to say, an unbelievable experience.  anyway, i'm
looking for dawn, one of those "crew" members.  she was there with her
woman who has a little boy, and one of dawn's favorite songs is white house
blues.  she also took some pictures, and i'm hoping to find her and the
pictures. thanks a lot

hkf's,
sorry for the nigc & for the ugly appearance that all forwards have, but i
thought this was important to all fans of music, mainly because after all
the bs, the live music experience is what we can always count on to put a

so even though i've never been to red rocks - i've seen some killer pics of
the place and i'm sure i'd get that concert-inspired-chill down my spine if
i ever heard a beautiful little darling while the sun was setting behind the

anyway, thanks for checking this out if you can...

sorry for the no wsp content but ,

the wonderful city of denver has decided that red rocks ampitheater
is not being thoroughly "exploited" and therefore they are attempting to
remove the trees and vegatation along the sides of the seating to make way
for corporate box seating and also to allow advertising to be displayed on
ship rock(the beautiful monolith behind the stage).

now anyone who hasnt lived in a cave for the last 20 years knows that it is
red rocks "unexploited" nature that makes it so beautiful and a truly
amazing place to see a show.

the landmark preservation committee will be reviewing the proposed
design changes for red rocks tuesday march 2, 1:00, at 200 w. 14th room
203.  this is an awkward time for working people, but please pass this
on to as many caring denver locals as possible so we can have a presence
at the meeting.  this phase of the meeting is especially for public
comment.

if you can not attend, pleas be sure to make your views known through
phone calls and e-mail to your state and local representatives (city
council, state and national senators and representatives and of course
the mayor.)

hey folks...

well, i haven't got a random super cool act for y'all definately must check
out (except nick drake maybe) or a pointless indigo girl moment to share
(even though i swear i heard neil young do a really poor version of their
'down by the river' the other day).

but - who wants a cd copy of early recordings 4 - blue food mysterys?? and
at minimal personal cost... this is a personal labour of love, painstakingly
remastered and sounding damn fine (although not quite as good as this failed
perfectionist'd have liked...)

yes, as a special offer to you, fellow igs list members, if you send me a
blank cdr, together with an ssae i will, for a limited time, burn you a
copy. and it's absolutely, positively guaranteed to increase exponentially
in value.* or course, if ya'd like to trade cds with me or somthing that'd
be cool too!

i'm sure i could plain sell this, auction it on ebay, or give it away with
every happy meal purchase, but i won't. all i ask is that you don't either
and track down and bludgeon violently anyone you find doing so.

yer basic track listing:

blue food

if you live like that
crazy game
holy city
the weakness in me
never stop
peace song
draw the line
nashville
malachy's
everybody's waiting
untitled
running from the cold
no way to treat a friend
i don't know your name
american tune

mysterys play rehersal

holy city
strange fire i

all ya gotta do is email me for my address. and if i get swamped i'll call a

peace 'n stuff. and i'll be back in a mo...

*returns*

further to my early recordings 4 ramblings...

for my next project, i'm going to make what'll probably be a 3 or 4 cd set
of the igs' rare official tracks. singles, compilations, promos (but
obviously not like reverse-1 and shades...) what i'd like is if anyone can
tell me anything i'm missing. i'm also gonna probably include (if there's
room) some radio sessions i have ('ballad of squeaky fromme' and an acoustic
'bury my heart' spring to mind.) but what i'd _reallly_ love is if someone
has this in really good quality (or at least, better than my v. hissy copy):

live at wrek 27 feb '89 with lots o' cool stuff including 'half moon cafe'
and 'the untitled song'.

jus' let me know 'k?? i guess it'll be a roughly chronological thing, but
maybe i'll get extra creative...

also if anyone has cool sounding copies of these, for yet more possible cds:

color me grey (the full tape)
em's solo tape
the study hall tape
great american music hall '92 full concert promo cassette
maybe even a cd of the general foods coffee promo
damn near anything else good (mountain stages, other radio concerts, etc.)

i can promise totally anonynimity in addition to a v. cool sounding personal
cd of your stuff if it's so required...

anyway, here's what i got so far, just let me know what you think. i know
there's prolly a few radio show sampler-type cds i'm missing, but still...

1989

land of canaan (remix)
secure yourself (from land of canaan plus 5 live 12")
kid fears (ditto, also on 'theodore')

american tune (from 'newport folk festival')

1992

1993

so i was driving home from work tonight listening to our local,
moderately alternative, radio station (102.1 in toronto, whom
incidentally i have never heard play any ig music) and they were
discussing the upcoming clash tribute album. the dj names a bunch of
bands that did covers on it, announces what is supposedly the local
release date (may 8) and proceeds to say that he has heard that it is
really bad. he then corrects himself, and says that there is actually
one really good cut on it by "you will never believe this, but the
indigo girls". he proceeds to say that, for people who may know the
indigo girls, they should like the album because of that cut, and for
people that have never heard of the indigo girls, their (the girls) song
is the best one on the album.
go figure. we could have told them that before even hearing it!

*sigh*
don't you hate it when someone rains on your parade when you're trying to do
folks a favour...

>ummmm..... scuse me but this is not early recordings vol 4...

first up let's just take a few quotes from my posts to clarify:

"i've just remastered blue food. it's by no means perfect, but what are ya
gonna do... i added a few extra tracks and unmodestly called it early
recordings 4."

"who wants a cd copy of early recordings 4 - blue food mysterys??...
this is a personal labour of love, painstakingly
remastered and sounding damn fine"

pretty clear that i made it and that's what i called it.
and as it's a natural follow up to er 1-3, then early recordings 4 it is.
(the information i have being that there will be no more in the 'er series'
although i'd love to be wrong about that). so no, it is not early recordings
4, but it is 'early recordings 4'.
8 out of 10 cats who expressed a preference didn't care as long as it sounds
good. which it does.

>this is blue food with the tail end of early recordings vol. 2 added on.

half right.
this is blue food (hence the blue food subtitle)
and the 'mysterys' play rehersal (hence the mysterys subtitle). which as far
as i know is not on the volume 2 that i own. unless they got real sneaky
with those hidden tracks.

so it's exactly what i said it was.

> i don't know of the existence of an early recordings vol 4....

so if you don't know of the existence of it, how can you say this isn't it?
and if it didn't exist why can't it be created (and in bootlegs ripping off
other boot series titles is de riguer (or however you spell it) viz. beatles
ultra rare trax series (by at least 3 different  labels))

>volume 3 was only just recently discovered/released.

and volume 4 has just been remastered/offered to the list.
deal.
(and i thought vol. 3 had been out a year or two, but who's counting...)

boy that was fun.

my partner and i just purchased a black martin with gold trim.  i can't tell
you what model it is because it is no longer with us.  lana played it two
days and it started fretting out really bad.  we took it back to music go
round and they tried to adjust it and the problem just moved up the neck.
they sent it to an authorized martin service.  two weeks later we got a call
saying they shaved the frets and made a few adjustments but that it was
sounding great.  i picked it up and the first thing lana did when she got
home was to take it out of the case so she could play it.  the problem was
still there.  we ended up just taking it back for a refund.  it broke our
hearts because it was a beautiful guitar and it was an electric/accoustic
which is what she wanted, but the sound was bad.  we don't know if we just
got a lemon or if they are having problems with all of that model.  we
decided not to try another one.  this guitar is listed in musician's friend
catalog, if you have access to one.  i think their price was just under
$500.

i don't know if this is the model that amy plays or not.  they look a lot
alike.

neil, i just want to publicly thank you for doing the cd stuff you do.
i can't get enough of good sounding ig - it's just not worth listening
to them (in my opinion) if it sounds bad.  i like when you can hear the
banter between amy & emily and/or the audience.  so much of it out there
is not great to dowright sucky quality, so i really appreciate your
remastering efforts, and the efforts of anybody who does this and then
makes it available for the list to enjoy.  thank you.

hello, all!
it's me, again, with a bunch of rare and not-so-rare stuff for you...
i'm not setting prices; i'll just take pffers and we can go from there.  it's
mostly michelle malone and indigo girls stuff, so if someone wants to forward
this to the m<ichelle list i'd really appreciate it, since i'm not on that one
anymore... everything is either brand spankin' new or in great condition.
here's what i have:

michelle malone and drag the river - "relentless" - vinyl, arista, 1990 -
factory sealed (can you believe it?!?!)

michelle malone - "new experience" - vinyl, aluminum jane, 1988 - never been
played, signed by michelle, insert has a couple cute pix of michelle, gerard
mchugh, kristen hall

michelle malone - "new experience" - cassette, aluminum jane, 1987 - factory
sealed

indigo girls - "rites of passage" - cd, sony, 1992 - demonstration, tri-fold
cardboard cut-out case, picture disc.  really cool.

indigo girls - "shed your skin" - ep cd, sony, 1998 - promotional, red cover,
5 songs

michelle malone and drag the river - "relentless" - cd, arista, 1990 - used,
great condition, out of print.

michelle malone and drag the river - "building fires over atlanta" - ep cd,
arista, 1990 - promotional, perfect condition, incl. "when a man loves a
woman", good luck finding this elsewhere!  it took me years! :0

mm and drag the river - "big black bag" - single cd, arista, 1990 -
promotional, "bbb" and "eavesdropping: a casual conversation with mm and lenny
kaye" - also grat condition

backstage passes:

all access - first annual monsterjam '98 music festival - october, mills
river, nc - laminate signed by michelle on white cord

ben & jerry's folf festival newport - artist - 1998, list of all artists on
reverse.  i have 2 of these.  both say m. malone at the bottom, but one is
signed... passes #ed 153 and 154.

newprt folk festival - artist - 1996, list on reverse, no name, pass # 138

indigo girls - all access pass from the map tour on a red band embroidered
with "wolf trap"

ban the dam jam - all access pass on burgundy cord

michelle's music midtown festival 1997 artist pass - laminate on white cord

lilith fair all access pass for aug 9 to aug 12, 1997 - blue, says "michelle"
on the back, hung on a really neat shoestring that says lilith fair all over
it.

new south music shocase pass printed with michelle malone, indigo girls swamp
ophelia all access sticker stuck on the back of it.

indigo girls swamp ophelia all access laminate pass with the fly design on
black cord

that's it for passes, though i know i have another ig one around here
somewhere!

last, michelle malone and drag the river dogtag from "relentless".  really
cool collector's item. =)

let me know what you think of these things... they go to the people with the
best offers... peace, love, and happiness, sarah

is located down by nyu.  it is a great club!  i have been there a few times in
the last few weeks and love it.  the cover is 10 bucks and there is a 2 drink
charge.  your drinks, however can be soda. i also think you can go if you are
under 21.

the only catch is you need to call them and reserve a seat.  it costs nothing
to do this but it guarantees you a seat since the space is kinda small.  there
# is 212-533-2680.

have fun!

hkf's,

since it's a little slow in the past day or so...  i must offer up my
bw-supporting plea for a certain show that i'm looking for.  basically, i
have lots to trade - so if anyone has this show, or knows of a copy out
there please let me know...
"september 15, 1997 -- marist college - poughkeepsie, new york"

and if anyone remembers that hot, smelly gym for the hte tour - you'll
remember how amazing that show was... (marley was there, i swear!)

thanks for listening...

to release tour dates, not complete summer tours but spring dates into april

upon us...)

gather round boot fiends, the emily solo boot is here.

this boot attained baby mythic status on the list a few years ago, but should
not be confused with the mythic emily solo boot a la "color me grey" by amy.
here's a song list:

side a- emily at decatur, ga 8/4/96
it's alright
caramia
southland in the springtime

following are sung with michelle malone:
all i can give you is me
wild horses (w/ michael lorant)
closer to fine (w/ shelia doyle)

side b- emily at rock for aids 2 8/18/96
it's alright
ghost

the next two are kristen hall songs. very nice. great voice. em helps out.
it's alright
fade away blind

coming up close, a til tuesday cover
all i can give you is me
closer to fine

the side a show, amy was stuck in a plane somewhere, and those are early
versions of sots songs.  single acoustic guitar.  interesting to hear how they
evolved.  maybe some of you "caramia" haters out there might hear something
different that you like.  the lyrics are also a bit different in a few places.

the side b "ghost" is beautiful.  just about the best reason, for me, to have
this boot (kristen hall being the second).  even though i'm an amy man, and
love love this song with her on it, hearing emily sing and play it on her own
illuminates it in a different way.  it makes you appreciate it more, the song
itself performed so spare with a single guitar and voice, the song with all
the additional trappings on the album, and of course, amy's contribution.
plus you get to be amy if you feel like singing her part.  and who wouldn't
want that? :-)

you get to sing amy's part all over this boot.  makes you appreciate her more
since your caterwauling isn't needed for the rest of the time <g>.  emily
plugs the side b show as a billings house benefit in the earlier performance.
the list made a donation to them for her birthday a year or so ago.

so, thanks to neil, the cd master, who has banished the evil generational
beast of tape to tape trees.  this tree has got mastered cds in its branches,
yeah baby!   contact the branch who's been assigned your zodiac sign and set
yourself up with a sase on a sturdy envelope and a 90 min tape-- they'll give
you their snail mail addies.  preferably maxell xlii (that's the standard boot
tape right?).  if there are any overflows, we'll deal with it.

some of these branches have cd to cd recording capability. they're marked with
an asterisk.  choose the one who's closest to your sign if you go this route:

virgo                           robsweeney@aol.com                              robin
libra                           bean@neu.edu                                            elaine
scorpio                 fairbk@outpost.sage.edu                 kelly
sagittarius             mcunningham5@earthlink.net              mike
capricorn               telane@trigon.com                                       tara
aquarius                        shannonmast@hotmail.com                 shannon
pisces  *                       mendina@utdallas.edu                            tony*
aries*                  gi troop@aol.com                                        erin*
taurus                  april@haitsuka.simplenet.com            april
gemini                          kla@aloha.net                                           karen
cancer                  wolf83@mindspring.com                   scott
leo                             omenus@aol.com                                  otts

don't forget to include with your sase and blank 90 min. tape (or cd-r) a
little note of what you are requesting since some of the branches may be
recording other things for other people.  also include your e-mail just in
case.

anything else i've forgotten i'll get back to you :-)

for those of you who can't wait for the "ig summer tour rush", which seems
like it might be more of a fall thing due to their release date etc, the
girls will be playing in this year's (and the last ever) lilith fair tour.
you can find the dates they will play at the lilith fair website at
http://lilithfair.excite.com/main.html.  it looks like they will be playing
june 19 - july 7, july 13 - 21.  i know at least the end of june they will
be in nocal, so the other dates are on the west coast and then moving east
in early july.

sorry... the dates listed on the lilith fair site are the

i just wanted to reiterate that if you want a cd but are not a pisces or an aries, just
pick one of us and send us an email. it's not hard for me to just pump out cds, so unless
50 of you ask, i'll be fine...so far i've only had 6 or 8 requests, so there's plenty of

hey guys-
i subbed to the dar-list.
at least i think i subbed to the dar-list.
yet no dar-mail have i received.
can somebody send me exact directions?

item #2 on my agenda (and yes, i have an agenda.  *all* of us subversive
folks *have* to have agendas, which we must push at *all* times.  just
ask tinky-winky):  a boot.
i'm seeking a copy of the sst chicago #1.  looking in particular for the
master booter.  i have (unreleased) ssts i could trade for this, and
this show only.  gimme a shout if you have it, or know where i can get
it, as i hadn't kept up with the boot trees when they were announced.
(was this ever announced?)

and i've been having the most surreal experiences with email listservs.
like, meeting fabulously insanely talented people who leave me
breathless, squealing, or a strange asphyxiated combination of the two,

sylacauga, ala. (ap) _
two men who claimed to be angry over a  sexual advance by a gay
acquaintance plotted his murder for two  weeks, then beat him to death
with an ax handle and burned the body  on a pyre of old tires, police
said thursday.

steven eric mullins, 25, and charles monroe butler jr., 21, were
charged with murder in the slaying of billy jack gaither, 39. they  were
jailed on $500,000 each.

the charges brought by police carry a maximum of life in prison.  but a
grand jury could indict the men on charges punishable by  death.

the feb. 19 slaying outraged gaither's friends in this central  alabama
town, along with civic leaders and gay rights organizations  that kept
the motive for the slaying quiet for days to help police  catch the
killers.

butler confessed monday after saying he couldn't sleep, and  mullins
admitted his involvement two days later while in jail on an  unrelated
charge, sheriff's deputy al bradley said.

mullins ''said god told him he needed to confess,'' bradley  said.

mullins and butler, who apparently knew gaither from going to  the same
bars around town, claimed that gaither made a pass at  them, bradley
said. the two then decided on a murder plan, the  deputy said.
mullins and gaither went to pick up butler at a nightclub, where  he was
participating in a pool tournament, bradley said. the three  men went to
a secluded boat ramp, where gaither was beaten and  thrown in the trunk
of his own car, then was taken to the  trash-strewn banks of peckerwood
creek, the deputy said.

badley said two tires were set on fire with kerosene atop a  concrete
platform overlooking the slow-moving, murky water.

''they took him out of the trunk, took an ax handle and beat him  to
death.  then they put the body on the fire,'' he said.

gaither's burned-out car was found the next day on a country  road.

friends, most of whom knew gaither was gay, said they did not  believe
he would make a sexual advance on the men.

''he didn't ever put anybody in (an awkward) position,'' said  marian
hammonds, who owns the tavern, a nightclub gaither visited  the night of
his slaying.

the gay and lesbian alliance of alabama learned of the killing  through
a contact in the area and notified authorities, complying  with a
request to keep the killing quiet so as not to interfere in  the
investigation.

'we wanted to make certain it was not one of those things that  would be
swept under the rug,'' said david white, the group's state  coordinator.

tracey conaty of the national gay and lesbian task force in  washington,
said alabama is one of 19 states with hate-crime laws  that don't cover
offenses related to sexual orientation.

''the message it is sending is that some hate crimes are wrong  and
others are not,'' she said.

state rep. alvin holmes has filed a bill that would extend  alabama's
law to cover gays. holmes said he was moved to file the  bill by the
slaying of 21-year-old matthew shepard in wyoming. the  gay college
student was beaten and left tied to a fence in the  cold.

gaither ''was a good person. he didn't deserve this,'' said  donna
mckee, a waitress and bartender at a bar gaither liked in  sylacauga,
about 40 miles southeast of birmingham.

''this is not the type of place where this happens,'' said  optician
george carlton, president of the city council. ''just  because you don't
like someone, you don't beat them to death.''

for those of you who don't know - john mayall's bluesbreakers was a
super-influential band in the big british "blues" movement, and perhaps
the only english band to be considered a part of the blues tradition, as
far as the uber-purists go.  he's a legend.
and keb'mo's on his way to becoming one too.
not only will this be for a good cause, but there's gonna be some sweet
music there...if you have a single ounce of love for the blues, that's
gonna be one helluva night.
now, who's gonna buy me a plane ticket?  i'm on the wrong coast.  :)

hey folks--been a loooooong time since i've posted.  hope you have all been
well.  i was pleased to see some mention of shawn mullins as i am and have
been a big fan of his since way back before he signed with columbia.
i had the great opportunity to see shawn at the metro here in
chicago last week.  sorry if this was mentioned already.  i do love his
music and performances but was very very disappointed with this show.  his
opening band played longer than he did.  my friends and i left the show
wondering if he was ok because it just seemed quite unusual that he would
play for 50 minutes total.  i also snagged the setlist and noticed many
skipped songs which would have been great to hear.  the crowd wasn't rowdy
or anything so i am left wondering what happened.  he did sound good while
playing.  the man sure does sweat a lot so i'm thinking maybe he just wears
down sooner.  anyone else seen him.
take care and if some of my old ig buds are out there drop me a
line.  sorry i've been so out of touch.  can't wait for the spring/summer
album to come out...  ciao for now

first of all, i just read my digests for the day and am totally bummed
to hear of emily's sister's untimely death.  this is so sad.  :-(

for tony and leigh ann, and all other interested listees, tickets for
the journey of hope anti-death penalty show go on sale tomorrow morning
at 10:00 a.m. cst.  if you don't live near a ticketmonster outlet, you
can call (615) 259-9600.  someone posted ticket price info last night,
but i think the tix are something like $18 and $25 or thereabouts.
also, special gold circle tickets will be available for $100  these will
enable a person to chat with the artists backstage either before or
after the show.  i'm not real clear on that, so you might want to check
with t-master.

the show is monday april 12(!) at the ryman auditorium in nashville.
also on the bill are steve earle (it's billed as "steve earle and
friends," actually), emmylou harris and jackson browne.  sister helen(?)
prejean, the nun portrayed by susan sarandon in "dead man walking" is
supposed to be there as well.  this is going to be such an incredible
venue for this show, and i'm sure amy and emily will be excited about
the prospect of playing at the ryman again.  when they last played there
in oct. '97, i think amy was so overcome with emotion that she commented
a couple of times how much she liked the ryman and said "god bless the
grand ole opry!" as she left the stage.  (that last one shocked me!) for
anyone who doesn't know, the ryman was the home of the grand ole opry
from about the early 1940s until 1974.  it was originally a church, and
was built in the 1890's (kind of a neo-gothic style).
great history, great acoustics, great artists on the bill, and amy's
birthday - gonna be a great show!

my bestfriend and i are roadtripping out west next week....we are kind of on a
week long journey to try to figure some life questions that have been
plagueing us since we graduated...like "what the hell am i going to do
now...", "what should i be doing now?"  we both need time and distance from
current surroundings...we need to get away, and kind of need to do some wild
and crazy things to wake us up....maybe we just need to get away from
obligations to really think...i don't know...we just gotta get outta here....

anyway, if you want meet up with a couple of minnesota girls...we're not
looking for trouble or to paint the town red or anything...just looking for
new people or experiences or a place to stay the night...email me back...

actually, if you would want to take in a couple of tired women for the
evening--we would love to sleep on your floor...seriously...we can't afford
hotels...and let me tell ya...the back of a saturn is really,
really...teeeny!!!!

we'll be in portland next tuesday/ wednesday for sure...(i have an interview!!
yeah!!) and then washington/seattle area wednesday/thursday... or some combo
of those days...let me know-- i would love to meet other listees out there!!
:)

peace,

hi folks,

a gentle suggestion aimed at no-one in particular.  i think we (as a
group) should avoid trying to find out or discuss how/why carrie
saliers died.  emily and her family must be going through hell now
and we should respect their need for privacy - in this situation even
more than in others.

i'm not saying folk shouldn't write in and express their sympathy,
just that we don't prod, however well-intentioned we may be.

yeah, i have to agree with jane on this one. while we should not be sympathetic to what has happened to emily and her family, i think the last thing they would want to see is somebody talking about them so openly at this delicate time. just give them time to mourn......

i forgot to indicate on the initial post that we have another cd burning

scott   wolf83@mindspring.com

the other two cd branches have gotten a huge amount of requests, so some of
you may be transferred over to scott.  but don't go about bombarding the tree
with panicked e-mails if you've already put in a request-- we'll take care of
it.  we're working on dividing up all the work.  you have to do your part
though in being patient.  with this amount of requests, it will take time.

happy, happy.

this seen as disrepectful....one does not inquire and care to know the details
of such unless they do truly care about it.  i am a tremendous and serious fan
of emily saliers.  if she must stop her life to go through a trauma, i care
about that as much as i do the positive things with which she deals.
yes, see me as taboo, but i would like to know what happened to her
sister....to love emily so much that you want to know every word to every song
and know what she meant by every song...is part of your celebrated
fanship...but now, just because it is not a musical part of her life, i am
loving her no less...i am interested no less, and i wouldn't mind knowing
every thought that is running through her mind....still.
to each his own, but you little followers know of what i speak.
self-righteous and politically correct as it may sound for you to seem
unseeking of what happened recently in her family, i don't feel that way.

ok guys and gals,
here i sit trying to recoup from the flu...got a nasty case of it......and i
get online to try and cheer myself up and not go stir crazy and i see the
boiling of yet another of our wonderful and long drawn out debates
beginning...yes, it is sad and yes we all feel for emily and her family, but
i do agree that it should stay off the list.....let us morn for her in
private as i am sure emily and her family would prefer....if we, her loyal
and devoted fans turn her sister's death into an egotistical argument, as
our debates often turn into, then we would be dishonoring her sister's
memory instead of showing our respect for her.....so dear friends let us
take any debate to private email and stop this before it gets ugly....think
about this before flaming me or anyone else on the list....if you were
living in a fishbowl, like the girls do, what would you think of all the
people staring at you when things like this happened......

oh come on - everybody on this list has the intelligence and decency to
know not to intrude on personal issues.  i'm really beginning to get
pissed at the moral indignation and tone directed to the list  - don't
speak to me as if i were a child.  and don't insult my intelligence by
assuming that i need "to be told" how to behave - what to day and what
not to say.  enough said.

hey folks,

just a couple of requests;

please keep the amount of quoted material to a minimum.  i know it's much
easier to just hit that reply button and not edit...but scrolling through
the same messages over and over gets very tedious...

please watch the length of your sigs.  four to six lines is best.  also
remember to edit out any excessive html text.

lastly, we've all been very good at keeping the happy tone on the list for
several weeks now.  let's not allow this great atmosphere be disrupted by
discussing the salier's tragedy.

if you would like to send your condolences, i would suggest sending them to
the ig fan club at igfan@rcam.com, or in writing to:
                indigo girls
                c/o russell carter management
                315 ponce de leon avenue
                suite 755
                decatur, ga  30030

i do know that while correspondence is scanned prior to being given to the
girls, it does eventually reach them.

thanks everyone...and have a great weekend!

hey y'all,

first of all, i must say, what a tragic loss for emily and her family.
that is all i plan to say about her sister's death because that is really
all that can be tactfully said by someone who does not personally know the
family.

secondly, i am unsubbing for a little over a week cause it's spring break
and i am off to paris and aix-en-provence (in the south of france)
tomorrow morning to see friends.  i won't have e-mail access, nor do i
want it because i just really want and need to get away for a week.

but before i go, i have one question.  if there is anyone on this list in
the minneapolis/st paul area who knows of a good feminist bookshop in that
area, please e-mail me before (afterwards it won't do me any good) 6am est
on saturday.  a good friend of mine is going to see some relatives up
there, and she wants/needs to check out some stuff at a feminist bookstore
for a women's studies program here.  thanks!

thanks!  have a great week everyone!  and for those of you going to see
michelle malone in cincy, i'll be there in spirit (hi, jill!).

love,
karen :-)

hey, y'all.

i was listening to the emily solo boot--sorry to those of you who don't
have it yet...:)--and i really, really love listening to her play
southland for that georgia crowd.  it's so cool (imho) to hear her play
it for a group of southerners, especially the part where she says "when
god made me born a yankee, he was teasin'."  they're all cheerin' and
stuff--it's like their own little inside joke or something. :)  maybe
those of you among us who were born in the south know what i mean...

i really love that song--even though i wasn't born in the south, it
makes me think about all the things i love about the place that i'm
from.  okay, okay, so there's basically just a lot of cows, gift shops,
and small-minded mennonites. but i still love coming home, especially
now that i'm about to embark on my official journey into "the world".

this is all a really corny way of saying that i love that song, and that
it makes me think about my own hometown.  yadda, yadda, nostalgia, blah,
blah, blah... :)

also, that fiddle after "played our hearts out all night long in new
orleans" just makes my guts hurt! ;)

all right, all right...i'll shut up now...

smiles all around,

shannon

members of the indigo girls mailing list,
this letter was received by a friend of amy ray
and forwarded to the saliers' family attorney
because of it's suspicious nature.  please refrain
from sending any mail that may be upsetting to
emily, amy or their families during this difficult time.
thank you.  letter follows:

dear amy,
i was sorry to hear about the death of emily's
sister. i knew that it was going to happen, it is
complicated to say the least how i knew. i feel
emily's pain, i know she is hurting deeply right
now. there is so much that i want to explain on
how i know all this but it would come out wrong
or weird and then you would think i am nuts, i
would if i were you. just kidding :) i know this
must be strange for you if you are who i think
you are. if you are unless i hear from you i wil
l never use thisaddy again. i felt that this time
was appropriate to use it. what i am about to
say is women's intuition so please take heed
of it. there are two people in emily's life right
now that will get her through this more than
anyone, you and the other person is closer to
you than her. i don't know who exactly the
other person is, but i do know that you will want
to keep this person at arms length don't do that,
let her in. you will both know who it is when you
see her just listen to your gut. she has always
been there caring from a distance, and now is
her time to help a time she has waited for, for a
long time. i know this sounds strange and you
are probably wondering why you should trust
me. i am just a girl from kansas i can't ask you
to trust me, but i can ask you to trust yourself.
i know this must all sound strange to you and
you probably think i am nuts, i'm not, i'm just
someone who has a gift and a big heart. please
tell emily and her family they have my condolences and are in my
thoughts and prayers. peace!
love,
holly (last name withheld)

let me take just a moment to remind you all that no one can post to this list
without being a member, that being said, here is your proof that what we
discuss on this list can and does get back to amy & emily.  show a little
respect and use some common sense.  if you feel it necessary, send
condolences, but keep them simple and to the point.  obviously a note like
this has only served to make the list look even lower in their eyes (was that
possible?).

something to warrant that feeling, because this is not directed to any one

listen to dee.  there's some really wise folks hanging around these
parts; we could do well to take notice of what they say.

i understand we have some, erm, really zealous fans in our midst (that
letter sounded like it was written by a very earnest, young girl who
*started out* with good intentions...).  that's great.  yay zealous
fandom.  but if you *must* spaz and gush and freak about amy and emily,
then by all means, email me and freak and spaz and gush until you can
gush no more. and then, when it's all outta your system, maybe you'll
see things clearly.  guys, oy vey.  they're just people, for the love of
pete wells.  people who play the guitar good and sing real pretty
(something which hundreds of our very own listees can also do!!! why not
start an ohmigosh-i-wanna-obsess-over-michal list? or one for chee? or
lamia or shelley or tim or me?)(wait, i think that last one's already
been done.  scratch that).  they're just people, like you.  yeah, you.
go look in the mirror, guys, you could do it too, and you're just a
person (my apologies to any deities currently subbed herein). if you're
visualizing them as anything but, please wipe the stars out of your eyes
and come back to us when your feet are firmly on the ground.

you know i love you.
now let's be good (if i can do it, you can).
jill

are we sure this person is even a listee?  this message was never
posted, until now, and i don't know of any regualar posters w/ the name
of holly from kansas....
i think it was more of a general warning....not necessarily a list
reprimand...cuz it might not be a listee....
i almost think its bad they sent that here because now we know of the
goings-on about stuff we don't even know....
but we don't even know if its a listee (we don't have the addy of the
author).  the person who sent it is i spose.
anyway...

i would be your well-meaning listee, what with my paranoia and my decency
splattered all over everywhere. . .

what the !@#$

who let this 15 year old punk in here?   i tossed off my halloween costumes
and baby gear, tossed off the shit where i'm asking momma and daddy for money
to go see the indigo girls jam at eddie's attic. . .

i thought that with the ig' wisdom, that somehow this blatant disrespect and
immaturity would be strained from our collective fandom.   somehow i've
stumbled upon a horrid minority of this poopy-folk person and all of her
inner-personalities. . .

she doesn't sound like an obsessed fan, she sounds like a bored person with
low self-esteem and morals, someone who looks her worst in jogging pants,
someone who got fired from her dairy queen job.

if anyone dare cross the sweet boundaries between being nice and being
intrusive. . .and they will. . . shall they saunter on, into the abyss, into
the fame that is their destiny. . .let them become vice presidents of
something. . .let them echo into their own hollowness, and envoke my serenity
no longer.

this is absurd, and silly that it should receive any noteriety.

can y'all imagine how creepy it must be to be famous like a & e?  we all think
at one time or another that we'd love it, but really?  of course, i get
creeped out if the grocery store cashier recognizes me from one week to the
next...  i grew up in a tiny town in kansas where everybody knew everybody
else's business, and no, i don't know "holly".  when i write or do a piece of
art intended to be shown, i am offering only my expression and not opening my
life up to intrusion and scrutiny.  we will learn whatever details emily
chooses to release.  she may eventually express her loss in a song and then
offer it for public consumption.  or not.  our intense "fandom" is not a true
personal connection and we need to remember this and remind those who might be
crossing the line.  emily knows how intense and loyal her fans are; she has
said as much in articles i've read.  she connects with us through her music,
not through e-mail or other direct means.  intrusions like that god-awful
letter might just scare her into being less open, making fewer appearances,
and we certainly don't want to make her a prisoner of her own talent.  just
think about it, especially those of you who really want to do something to
reach her personally.  don't do it.  let her come to us when she needs us to
receive the part of her heart she puts into every song.
freida.

with the supicious letter, and the general disscussion over the death of emily's sister, i think bathetic (jill) made a good point. the ig are just people, the same as us. sure, they're really great songwriters and everything else, but at the end they're just the same as us, with the same emotions and everything else - but especially the same feelings. treat them as such - have a little respect, people......

john.
