i almost think there is a swinging pendulum of the ig popularity, it is sooo
bizarre the sizes of venues i have seen them in since sots came out. first,
two college arenas, then an amphitheater, then a small college gym, a indian
community center, a small theater, the orpheum in boston, the main stage at
randall's island, newport, then a small theater in portland, me a week
after...

it's cool they at least have the opportunity to decide "we are doing a club
tour and still pull it off - aka suff sessions - and i think everyone who
wanted tixs got in throughout the tour.

strange parallel of sorts, went to see great big sea (a folk group who are
unreal live - they are huge in canada) last night in albany, ny - it looked
like a church bean supper when we walked into the venue - but they put on an
incredible show - and the are pretty obscure in the states!...go check out
the official web site at www.greatbigsea.com or check oy gbs boston (a
baigl, fran egan, *the winthop, ma fran*) at www.flybyday.com/gbsboston

hi,
or hi y'all  ( more appropriate to the list )

please let me know if you could copy great woods  for me or if you know
someone who can do it.  someone said they would do it about a year ago, but
now that it has been brought up here i realize that i never heard from her
again.  well, let me know if you can help.  sorry to ask such a thing of you.
i don't have much and i have less time, so i guess the best way to handle
something like this is i could send a tape with a sase.  if you really believe
your time is worth more than this, honestly tell me.  i understand that time

report from davis:

michelle was incredible; goofy, rockin' and hilarious.  she played mostly
devil moon stuff, and one new song (homegrown) which is awesome.  the crowd
was small and mellow, and it was a great venue.  lots of in-between song
banter, like telling us folks that the jeans she was wearing came from a
thrift store, so she was wearing someone else's pants.  great stuff.  here's a
setlist, but it's probably out of order:

redemption dream
grace
california
the edge
medicated magdalene
butter biscuit
teen lament
green
homegrown
blue suede
wild horses

wendy bucklew followed, but i didn't stick around to see her.
fyi: i'm pretty sure this show was booted, if anyone is interested.

<snip>

i have to agree with your statement about increased airplay these days.
when sots came out the local top 40 station started playing shame on you all
the time.  after awhile that dwindled.  now though, starting a couple months
ago, they began playing it again, and closer to fine too!  one day (like a
month ago), i was listening the radio and they played this ig song i had
never heard before. apparently it was an older cover of a rod steward song.
i instanly called up the station and asked if the girls had somehow managed
to release a new album without my knowing about it. the dj guy just told me
it was an old song that they released a couple years ago..."probably off of
their first album" he says!! oh well.

i have to disagree with you on being agains exposure however.  sometimes
i like to call up the radio station during the day and request ig songs.
its like my little way of forcing fifteen thousand people or so to listen to
the girls.  and maybe someone else, some musically deprived hanson fan or
something, will hear them and learn that there is a higer force in the
universe.  if just one person comes to the light, isn't it all worthwhile?

there's one other point i'd like to make.  if vh1 hadn't played the
video for galilleo many many moons ago, i would probably never had heard of
ig until shame on you hit the airwaves.  it always irritates me when a band
gets mass exposure and then instanly they get accused of "selling-out".
well, even hardcore fans like us need to start somewhere.  since that first
exposure i've bought every ig thing i can get my hands on.  and i've
travelled hundreds of miles to see them in concert.  support from fans
propagates ig music, as it generates revenue for the girls and allows them
to continue making records and touring.  which i think i'm fairly safe in
saying that we all want that.  artists work so hard to build an initial fan
base through endless touring and publicitly driven events that when they
finaly do get mass exposure,  nine times out of ten, they earned it.

on the soapbox again,
chris wilson

i think the recent subject about where we first heard the ig illustrates a
point about the exposure thing - if the music of the ig doesn't get more
exposure to the public through radio and television, then they simply won't
get more of the fanbase that they need to keep going as a group. another
point that we have to think about, unfortunately, is how more exposure to
the public might change the ig for the worse (just thinking about ani
difranco's views of the record industry there......)

anyway that's my two cents.....

john.

max 95.7 plays a lot of ig - in fact, they've very lilith-friendly
all-around. we keep the radio on in the dining hall from 5-8, and as often
as not we'll hear at least one indigo girls song. it's invariably galileo,
least complicated, or ctf, but even so...
on a separate topic,. it's interesting how soy has almost
completely dropped from the airwaves, isn't it? i haven't heard it on the

maybe its just me but i've always heard the girls get a fair amount of radio
play, even when i lived in baton rouge.  even way back in 89 when i was
living in columbus ohio (yeah, i get around). we have a radio station here
in seattle which has a love affair with the girls.  they are a mainstay on
the station and get played (usually) numerous times during the day. and
that's been the 4 years i've lived here in seattle.

something to think about if you are against exposure...would they really
have the resources to be able to do benefit shows so successfully like hte
or free school concerts if they weren't so well known?

my wife and i also do something similar. using another term to describe what
we have to appease the religious reich is very much like the "separate but
equal"  tactic of recent history and it just disgusts it. were i a man, we'd
be married. the only thing that holds us back are these discriminatory laws.
when in a business situation, and are asked if we are "business" partners,
we always say and life.  of course that hardly ever comes up. fremont is the
coolest place to own a business so if you are ever in seattle, make sure to
drop by (hey, michelle malone shops in this district).

the last six tracks are from the blue indigo girls ep given away as a lilith
promo. i'm pretty sure the glastonbury show is a boot that's been around for
a while, but i'm not sure of the name.

the ep itself goes for $25-$35 on ebay, so depending on how much this cd
costs, it might be a good buy.

just to help everyone judge the value of this recording - i paid $24.99 for it
at the st. louis store.  i thought that was pretty high at the time, but it's
a really fun cd.  hope that helps you compare against e-bay or other sources.

i bought this recording sight unseen and was very disappointed. the first
few tracks are direct from reverse1live, the last are from the shed your
skin ep and the others are from another boot; none of them are new
recordings. if you don't have any of the others, this might be a good
buy, but don't think you're getting something new.

they were doing benefits back in the mid-80's before anybody had
ever heard of them - i can think of don't eat out of dented can and peace
by tomorrow of the top of my head. and i remember reading an article on
lifeblood from their college days in which amy talks about organizing a
benefit of some sort. so although it is unlikely that they could do
benefits on the scale of hte as relative unknowns, i have no doubt that
they would be doing good work somewhere, somehow.

hi!

okay, here's the deal...for some reason i decided that i wanted the rop
songbook, so i ordered it from amazon.com.  anyway, it arrived and i came
to the realization, "i don't really need this," so i am offering it to the

willing to sell it for $16 including s&h.  the first person to e-mail me
gets it.  it is in perfect condition.  i trust people on this list enough
to write me a check, i have never been ripped off before.  so if you want
it, e-mail me. . .

had to share this with y'all.  while driving to work today, i decided
to stop in the local supermarkets (gerity's).  keep in mind, my town
consists of only 3 streets, and this supermarket is 15 min away in
clarks summit, the closest town to me.
while picking out my apple for a lunch snack, i stopped because i
heard a familiar song playing from the store speakers.
the grocery store was playing "power of two" by the girls.  of
course, being the fan that i am, i began to sing along (and not
quietly either) and everyone around me just stared at me.  i didn't
care.  it's good to know that the people who make these tapes have
good music sense.
hope everyone else had a great day.

this once again brings up the debate about bootlegs.  by buying this, you are
ripping off amy and emily (unless of course this was released by epic).
especially if these songs are from promos or boots that have been around, i am
sure that people on the list would be more than willing to make copies. as
soon as i get my cd burner working i will offer to make copies for whoever
wants one (from my bootlegs and my promo and please dont ask me now cause i
will offer it to the list when i am all set)
or what some  used to do with ghost, is one person bought a video or bootleg
that they were selling and set up a tree, that way everyone got a copy, and
they only got paid once.

but think about it. it will be cheaper too, to get it from someone on the
list. 3 bucks or less for a cd and about 1  buck fifty for postage compared to
25 bucks ???  the ig make no money off this and its pretty lame to rip off the
artists who we sit around and talk about all the time.  whatever.

just my $.02
peace
sasha

i have no doubt whatsoever that artists in michelle's position will continue
to do more benefits and stuff like that. the point i was trying to make was
that they can be much more effective doing benefits with a huge fanbase (i
mean, i don't care why they're in concert, i just want to see 'em. yeah a
benefit is all the sweeter but my initial response is always "ooh the
i-girls are in town!!!" and then when i find out its a benefit, i think
that's even better.  if you have a 5,000 person fanbase and you do a benefit
and $10 of the ticket price goes to a worthy cause, well i won't begrudge
that but what if your fanbase grew to like, 50,000 and you donate
$10/ticket?  my other point is that hey, they still need to earn a living.
amy and em could do nothing but benefits now if they so chose but i doubt
they could have done that 15 years ago.

didn't amy say basically they were ok with bootlegs cuz the people who are
booting their shows probably already have everything else of theirs? or am i
thinking melissa etheridge?  now if someone is just splicing together songs
from various cds already released for purposes other than personal, i'd
think that would violate copyright law.

amy and emily have said they dont mind the taping of their shows for trading
purposes , however, they do mind the sale of their bootlegs (as it is illegal
and all). i am pretty sure they dont allow plugging into the soundboard
anymore because of these recordings like history of us and complicated girls.
also it was amy who got really pissed off at rainy day records who were
selling the cds we all love and know as early recordings vols. 1,2 and 3
because all of those songs are licensed to the girls themselves or epic, not
rdr.   you all can do what you want,  it's just something to think about.

i've been holding this in for a while, now, and i just gotta say it.  this
is not intended as a flame, just an expression of my osho (oh so humble
opinion).

the indigo girls, as most performing artists who release cds on larger
labels like epic, are already rolling in money.  if they feel "ripped off"
by the presence of a bootleg cd like the one in discussion, they can pay
their high-powered lawyers to sue under copyright violation.  that's why we
have copyright laws.  if people want to buy a good copy of the songs in
question, rather than get them from the list, it's their own business, and
this list is a *very* generous place, so they surely have that option.

to be sure i'm not saying that the girls don't deserve their wealth, they
absolutely do.  they work hard at what they do, and they make and deserve a
lot of money doing it.  likewise, they use their wealth wisely for causes
they believe in.  but i think if we're thinking of this whole issue on a
political level about not "supporting" the girls by buying this cd, we might
be thinking about the whole thing the wrong way.

and i just have to say that i don't think the indigo girls are going to miss
the $5 profit they might make off the purchase of this cd.  they're already
b'zillionaires.  our money would probably be better spent, if i may think of
it this way, donating to relevant charities, rather than their pocketbooks.

okay, off my soap box, delete key ready!

it's most definately a bootleg... sounds like they're putting a standard
disclaimer on the cd out of habit or something.  i'm willing to bet, a
quick phone call to ig's manager would clear this up pretty quickly...

u.s., cuban musicians gather in havana to compose

by andrew cawthorne

havana (reuters) - if music be the food of love, play on, said
shakespeare.

apparently paying heed to the bard's advice, nearly 100 u.s. and cuban
musicians monday crossed the political divide between their nations to
start composing songs together in the largest such cultural exchange since
fidel castro's 1959 revolution.

the musicians -- including stars and lesser-known artists from jazz, pop,
rock and latin genres -- kicked off the week- long event in havana by
drawing lots to split into twos and threes, and work together composing
new songs.

the fruits of their labor will figure in an all-star, invitation-only,
concert at havana's karl marx theater to culminate the event sunday night.

''i believe that music is one powerful tool in the world, and can and
should be able to build bridges between peoples in a way that other things
cannot,'' said alan roy scott, whose los angeles-based group music bridge
is organizing the event.

on the 44-member u.s. side are artists like peter buck of r.e.m., jimmy
buffett, gladys knight, lisa loeb, amy ray from the indigo girls, james
taylor, and cuban-american musicians horacio hernandez and walfredo de los
reyes. they are accompanied by some british musicians including mick
fleetwood from fleetwood mac, and andy summers of the police.

cuba's 48 participants include some of the caribbean island's best-known
musicians such as carlos varela, cesar portillo de la luz, jose luis
crotes, juan formell of the van van, chucho valdes, and isaac delgado.

organizers insisted the event was a goodwill musical exchange only -- with
no political overtones.

''we are musicians, and we want to talk about music,'' said cuban artist
and event organizer amaury perez at a monday news conference.

music bridge's scott, who has organized similar events with romanian,
irish and russian musicians, added that the aim was to use music as a
''healing force'' which would ''shine a very bright light on the hope for
the future.''

the exchange is the largest of its kind between cuba and the united states
since they broke formal diplomatic ties soon after castro came to power
four decades ago. washington has maintained an economic embargo since then
in a bid to isolate and pressure castro and his one-party communist
system.

there have, however, been other bilateral musical exchanges over the
years: billy joel and others came about 20 years ago, some u.s. musicians
have been participating in the annual havana jazz festival, and u.s.
pianist byron janis gave a concert here earlier this month.

this week's event, titled ''music bridges...over troubled waters,''
coincides with the first visit in 40 years to cuba by a u.s. major league
baseball side. the baltimore orioles will arrive at the weekend to play a
cuban national side in a long- anticipated exhibition game, also scheduled
for sunday.

musicians participating in the bridges' event are not being paid for the
song-writing or the concert.

hey everyone
how about another topic to discuss?  i'm wondering which songs you would
like the girls to cover.  (sorry if you've already talked about this
recently).  either just in concert or for a tribute album or something.  i
know we've discussed the songs they do cover but, if you could request any
song of them, what would it be?  just a wonderin.

i've been thinking they would do a great version of human touch by bruce
springsteen.  i don't know, part of the reason is because my brother feels
for bruce a lot of the same things i feel for the music of the girls, so
it is a natural connection for me to make.  plus, i can just see the look
on amy's face as she screams out "oh darlin" near the end of the song.

what do you think?           happy day to all.

hey, its been a few months since we did this last...i'm sure i'll come

to be a slightly different variation on the chick with guitar theme.
i'd love to see them cover one of rose polenzani's songs...say, oh,
"omen" or "olga's birthday" or "allah".  i think emily could do a great
job with some of barbara kessler's songs.  or carrie newcomer ("take it
around again", "hold on"...i still think bird or the wing would be a
great hootenany-jammie...think "closer to fine" with a washboard).   i
still wanna hear amy do "joey" (or anything else by concrete blonde).
or dylan's "masters of war"...mmm-hmmm...me be thinkin' growly amy at
the moment (as i am feeling rather growly and grumbly myself).

yes - concrete blonde.  can you hear the ig doing "still in hollywood"
or "your haunted head"?

ok - so this won't appear like a total "me too" post, let me try to add
something original.  "the road and the sky" or "sleep's dark and silent
gate" by jackson browne would sound nice by them.  maybe joni mitchell's
"blue" or "court and spark", or "california"?  actually, anything by
joni mitchell would sound great by them.

is looking down a bit.  in another photo, emily is at the
mike.  amy has lost the red shirt and is leaning forward, jammin'.
i checked the sites along the everything indigo web ring and the kind

ahhh... my favourite subject...

(but before i forget, everyone who's er4 cds i recieved before the weekend
should have their copies on their way to them as we speak... if you like it
tell the list, if not, keep it to yourselves! and if you want details on how
to get yourself a copy, email me!)

bootlegging's been around for a long, long time. shakespeare was bootlegged.
in fact, one of his plays (pericles) survives only because someone
surruptitiously took shorthand notes during a performance. it's not a very
accurate rendition (a bad audience recording!), but it's valuable for
shakespeare scholars in the same way that bootleg recordings are valuable
for music collectors today.

if artists truly wanted to be rid of bootlegs, the simplest thing to do
would be to release the material themselves and undercut the unofficial
versions. but for various reasons that doesn't happen too often. lack of
profit potential being the main one. frank zappa's 'beat the boots' series
is a fine example for folks to follow.

artists are not losing money because of bootlegs simply because they
wouldn't have got the money in the first place. the only difference between
trading and buying boots is that you're giving money to bootleggers and
record stores if you purchase them. and in a lot of cases people have to buy
it in the first place so they can then trade it! some bootleg cds (notably
italian ones using 'grey' copyright law) even pay songwriter royalties to
remain legal whilst being unauthorised. one of life's ironys is that the
tigntening of these laws has reduced this practice.

artists in general are being ripped off more by the record companies than by
bootlegs. the royalties they get from their cds (which are themselves
reduced by discounting and freebie deals) then have to pay for recording
costs, promotion, videos, and other expenses before the surplus eventually
gets to them. the example i always use is that the wonder stuff, who had
quite a few hits in britain, good album placings and the like, still ended
up owing the record company money when they split up.

i don't buy the theory that people who trade and buy boots have all the
artists commercially available material. i think i can lay claim to that
with the indigo girls (including all their compilation appearances) and for
sure with the beatles, but not, for example, with bob dylan. even so, just
because i have a bob dylan boot doesn't mean i would have used my money
instead to buy one of his official discs.

the best thing to do is to trade boots and do newbie trades and stuff like
that as much as possible. and if that guilty feeling hits you, send a cheque
to charity (the dar williams website actually supports that option if you
want her earlier recordings...) me, i'll just keep on playing devil's
advocate and stuff...

and so on and so forth... i'll shut up for now...

never had her but we were so close and still are...) fathers just passed away.
what am i supposed to say to that? i really want to say something meaningful
but i am always so damn unsure abut what to say that won't hit a nerve or that
won't saound tacky or anything... this woman means a lot to me. any ideas?

wow. i feel like such a stranger... haven't posted in such a long time! ;o)
anyways, i think it would be pretty nice if the girls covered "this is the

was a boy". any other thoughts?

thanks to another generous list person who has donated
server space, we now have a second site open, on which
the following files will be available for about a
week:

the white dot (3/16/88), blood and fire (bootleg cd),
shades of indigo (promo cd - sans tracks that were
taken directly from nomads*indians*saints).

the fan who donated the server space would like to keep
the ftp address private, and asks that you to email me
if you would like to get the address. to reduce the
amount of bandwidth used on this list, you will receive
the setlists when you email for the address.

when you get the address, please do not post it on the
web, in email lists, or to news groups.

thank you,

all right...

i agree that the issue of bootlegs is all about ethics, not money.  true,
amy and emily aren't exactly hurtin' for money, but that doesn't mean it's
right to cheat them out of the money that they have earned. i care much more
about my integrity than owning *every* indigo girls performance that ever
was.  just my opinion...

covers:

i'd like to hear emily (with amy backing her, of course) do dar's "you're
aging well."  i'd also love to hear them do anything by harry chapin or jim
croce.  i also agree with whomever said rose polenzani's "olga's birthday."
i think it was shelley--shelley, your loop tape was awesome!  :)

anyway, that's all i've got to say for now. ;)

here's to the end of a genuinely crappy day!

hi all,
i would love to hear emily do that italian restaurant song by billy
joel and amy to do hard day's night.

on an unrelated note, has anyone seen jewel in concert and found her to be
a bit snobby?  i was really looking forward to her concert but i was
disappointed when she barely talked to the audience and went on about
being a diva, amongst other things.  it didn't seem like something she'd
normally do, maybe she's tired of touring, who knows?  i'd love some
feedback.

hmmm...

well, i would love to hear the girls do girlfriend by matthew sweet.
another contender would be fishing by richard shindell.  a dar song?
well, since they're discussing it's a war in there over on the dar list

i was just thinking about this the other day.  i'm about to
geographically locate myself here... what about cheeseburger in paradise
or margaritaville by our hero, jimmy buffett?  or changes in latitudes,

the songs are built on harmonies similar to the ig sound.

yeah, i wasn't that impressed with jewel when we saw her at lilith. i'm not
sure if she's just kinda shy and unsure onstage sometimes, and it just comes
off as being snobby, or if she's actually just that self-involved.  i'd like
to think she's just shy...  i guess everyone can't be the southern goddesses

<<<<<<snip>>>>>>

i've seen jewel twice and both times she blew me away...  i have her two
cd's but they often put me to sleep - they just don't have that edge or
funness (?) to them...  but, when i first saw her open up for neil young a
ways back - she totally surprised me!  (jones beach anyone?)  i thought she
would do nothing to entertain this somewhat huge amphitheater crowd - but
she didn't disappoint imho...  her songs seemed to have much more life in a
live setting (as everyone else does - but her songs especially)...  and then
the lilith fair - the initial and best year so far - 1997...  not a
surprised reaction because i had seen her already, but more of a wow!!!!
she wasn't up there with ig or sarah that day in pa, but she was definitely
amazing!  the yodeling, the singing, the acoustic geetar by her side - it
all worked wonderfully together to give her songs that needed extra
excitement!  and her verses in the water is wide & closer to fine, and not
to mention her yodeling...  all sweet like the sweetest candy...

and seeing all the interviews of lilith and all that - i think she's a
pretty darn cool eskimo lady...  and i certainly won't kick her out of bed
for eating crackers - that's for sure...

(oops...  thinking out loud again...)

hey all,

once ig confirmed their appearance for the newport folk festival, i began
wondering who else might be there this year.  its always a great time, and it
drives me crazy anticipating the lineup.  admittedly, last year's will be hard
to beat.  so, i was completely elated this morning when i made a little
discovery on pollstar.

i usually check schedules for artists/bands on pollstar every few weeks for
updates.  i've been wanting to see susan tedeschi for quite sometime, but our
schedules haven't worked out...up 'til now.  she will be appearing at nff on
sunday, 8/8!

i don't know how familiar any of you are with her stuff, but she wails!!  if
you haven't heard her, check her out.

after i found susan would be there, i searched by site on pollstar for nff,
and no one else is showing yet.  anyone care to venture any guesses/ideas as
to who else might play?

hey all!

first of all:
thx again to shelley for compiling it!!!:)))

i can't comment on the contributor's music yet, since i haven't had
the time to listen to the tape ...but i just wanted to make a slight
correction to shelley's liner notes:
the opening song is actually called *reach* not *slide*, not that it
matters much;)) but just to let y'all know who are maybe
interested:).

oh, and thx for the nice feedback i've gotten so far :)!!!

during one of my shoulder-to shoulder, standing under their spell beneath
the stage at a future concert, i would love to hear emily and amy belt out
that old goodie...love hurts.  heart did a great semi-acoustic version from
one of their unplugged, live cd's.
there is also an old amy grant tune...i mean old, named the prodical(i'll
be waiting) from one of her contemporary christian days of making albums, with
which emily could win my heart.  oh, listen to silly me.  she already has it.

basically, the girls could fart in the key of e and there would be at least
two postings, asking if anyone had it, so i think it is safe to say that any
cover is a good cover, as long as our precious girls are the voices within it.

interpretation.  i'd love to see them do this song!

yuck yuck yuck. sorry, jewel is like, one of my least favorite performers.
i found it interesting during lilith a couple years back that she not only
cut heavily into other performers' time by going over, but alot of people
took her coming on stage as a cue to go elsewhere. man those bathroom lines
were incredibly looong during her set!!! i just thought it was plain rude of
her to think she was so special she could take as long as she pleased up
there on the stage when everyone else, including sarah, played for their
allotted 40-50 mins.

but how about emily covering "angel" by sarah mclachlan?
>>>>>>>>>

i have to vehemently disagree on this one...  i see angel as her
quintessential song - not only my fave, but also the perfect song that fits
the beauty and style of everything that is sarah mclachlan...  other songs
by her, maybe, but i think angel is just a masterpiece that cannot be
touched...  (uh oh, this is the murmur list, isn't it? <g>)

i just feel that it would be the same as saying jewel/sarah/shawn (insert
female) would perform ghost just as beautiful...  i say no to that.  or
saying (insert band) would perform ctf just as sweetly...  i say no to that
too...

sorry to be a little critical, but regardless of the beauty of emily's
voice - i just think some things should be left the way they are...

[wow, i can see my house from the top of this soapbox...]

i think it would be sweeet to hear them do "bullet the blue sky",

hrm.  i don't seem to remember trashing any of u2's songs in my post.
frankly, i think they're one of the few groups that can pull pop music
into new directions, and they're willing to go out on that limb and
try.  i may not _like_ everything they've done, but i do my best to
understand what they're doing, and i respect them immensely as artists
and as social commentators.

so far as i know, this is part of the whole series of promos for
the eponymous album (including reverse 1 live), all of which are very
simple in design (differentiated from each other only by color) and come

hey everybody,
i couldn't resist adding my piece on this one. i'd love to hear emily
sing rem's nightswimming off of their automatic for the people album. or
what about john mellencamp's  hurt so good. (i'm going to see him may
28th in chicago!! anybody else going?) for some reason, i can totally
hear amy going nuts on that song. and as for emily doing angel, i think
i understand the mixed feelings. i'm sure emily would sing it
beautifully in her own beautiful emily style, but it's just weird when
it's another artist that you really love. because i'm not a die hard
sarah fan, i'll use another example. i think it'd be cool to hear amy
sing a mm or cooper song.....but then again, maybe not. i love their
music so much and their style and how they sing it....don't get me
wrong, i'd love to hear amy sing anything- if she wanted to sing a
michelle malone or cooper song i wouldn't try to stop her....she could
sing i'm a little teapot over and over again for hours and i'd go
nuts....but when it's another artist you love, you're kinda protective
of their style and what it does for you. i don't know about anybody
else, but i'm not a big fan of hearing other artists cover ig. sure i'll
listen to it..out of curiosity and respect (obviously they love the
girls too if they're covering them) but when it comes down to it i only
want to hear amy and emily's voices singing their own stuff. now, open
mic is a different story....because that's just fun and...well, fun.
gotta love someone standing up and saying, ok, i'm going to do some
indigo girls songs tonight. aaaanyway... i don't think i'm making any
sense....so....in conclusion, i think this is my longest post
ever....i'll stop rambling now.
peace,
lia

great songs.  oh, i'd love to hear them do these.
>

i can just hear it.

i keep thinking of songs i'd like to hear - probably no one else would
though, but:

"your eyes" by peter gabriel
"tupelo honey" by van morrison
"lines around your eyes" by lucinda williams
"pineola" by lucinda williams
"love is a battlefield" by pat benatar  (i didn't much like the song as
sung by pat, but think amy & emily would do it justice)

and to whoever it was who asked who sung "angie" - it is by mick
jagger/stones originally, although tori does a wonderful version too.

does anybody out there have the tabs for love the one you're with as the

re-tune. any info would be appreciated....thanks!

i would love to hear em sing "at last" a la etta james or something really
schlocky like "love will keep us together" (all skate, now reverse).  as for
amy, my favorite janis joplin song "try (just a little bit harder) or "st james
infirmery" done by the late great louis armstrong and recently done by
snakefarm.
as for the both of them, "society's child" by janis ian (i think it'd sound
great with thier harmonies)  or "sandra at the beach" by poi dog pondering.

just my two cents for the wishin' well.

just wondering.....

with all this talk of covers, and the number of covers that the ig have done since they started, wouldn't it be interesting to see the ig do an album of covers? i was thinking of something along the lines of shawn colvin's album she did a few years ago, which unfortunately i can't remember the name of ---- i only recently got into shawn, and have brought "a few small repairs", and "holiday songs and lullabies"....

hi.

last night my gf and i saw anna egge in concert (she plays acoustic
guitar), and she mentioned that she had recorded a track for a dusty
springfield tribute album (the song is called breakfast in bed, and she
played it for us) and that jane siberry, laura love, and ig would also
be recording tracks for the album.  after the concert we asked her about
it, and she said laura love (whom we also saw in concert - she plays
bass) was doing son of a preacher man, and that amy told her (at this
point i said, "you spoke to amy?  can i shake your hand again?") that
she and emily would probably be doing "needles and pins".

i would definitely recommend seeing her, her album octoroon is one of my
favorites (i made a video for bad feeling using scooby doo clips back when i was
a vj at a local bar). her newer album shum ticky is pretty darn toe tappin' too.
btw if anyone wants the chords for midnight train to georgia by the girls let me

hi all,

i wanted to remind you that this sunday marks the 20th anniversary of our
country's worst nuclear accident, three mile island.  this area in pa has
always been my home, and tmi's accident was one of the scariest times in my
life.  ig visited it while on their honor the earth tour here in 1997.

this year for the anniversary, dar williams will grace the forum in harrisburg
at 6:00.  in addition, aunt pat and susan werner will be playing.  tickets are
$20, and may be purchased at the groove 717-774-1078.  if you're anywhere
close, this will be a good show, and for a good cause.  any further info i can
provide anyone?

it's interesting the amount of contemporary cover suggestions that have been

on this, so don't flame too hard) they haven't done any covers that have
been written since they signed to epic - it's all been oldies.

ok, i just thought of wild wild party... and i'm gonna say that doesn't
count...

the igs are gonna do 'needles and pins' for a dusty tribute??

but, says neil, that song (although a cracking one) was written and done by
jackie deshannon and popularised by the searchers! not an obvious dusty
track, if she ever did it and i have no clue on that one... (has anyone
heard ani's version of wishin and hopin'? that should go on...)

and so on(wards)

how can you not?!  i must admit that this made me laugh out-loud... i can
see myself doing the same thing....

so, i thought of a new thread... kinda silly, but i think you'll enjoy
it....

what is the most embarassing thing you have done in public while listening
to an ig song (or cover) or if there was one stuck in your head?

for me, it would be at work:  i work in an uppity collections law firm
(please don't flame me for my job... it's not a career, i don't like it, but
it pays the bills) and ctf was on the radio.  sitting at the desk next to me
was the senior-most partner and several staff members along with an it
person doing some training....  anyway, they got to "the closer i am to
fine!!!" and i sang emily's part nice and loud right there... not just like
in normal voice, but in concert-i'm-there-and-singing-along-voice.  i guess
i just got lost in my own little world.

in any event, i hope that you like the thread... have some fun...  and hello
again!  it's been a long time since i've posted.

kisses and huggies!

i was in my local library.  i just purchased some high quality head phones.  i
was listening to swamp while cruising the books looking for something to read.
(i am such a nerd)  but i suddenly feel a tap on my shoulder.  the librarian
asked me to stop singing.  apparently i was sing very loudly and i didn't
realize it.  so now when i go in i touch my throat to check my vocal chords.  i
guess i automatically start singing when i listen to them.

usually this is because the server is too busy. however, in this case, it's because of a
setup error with the files. this is one of the times when a web browser doesn't really
tell you what the ftp sever is saying: browsers lump a long list of different error
messages together under the heading of "extended information," and these messages are all
quite different. using an ftp program, rather than a web browser, you can see what's
called the "permission string" for each file. (a quick lesson in unix!) this list of
letters tells what people can do with the files. for the old files you see:

-rw-r--r--
meaning: the owner can read and write them, the owner's workgroup can read them, the rest
of the world can read them. if we can read them, we can download them.
for the new files you see:

-rw-------
meaing: the owner can read and write them, the workgroup can't even read 'em, and the
rest of the world can't read them. since we can't read them...

the owner of the files needs to change the permissions on the files, typing in "chmod 644
*.*" [enter key] if it's a unix system. there can be a spot of confusion over this,
because you can see unix permisison strings for files not on unix systems. many servers
report the strings as a shorthand way of telling you what you can and can't do, even on a
winnt or 95/98 system (like mine, for example!).

so much of the 'net runs unix, or uses unix-style messages and commands, that it's worth
learning a little bit about it so you can complain intelligently when things go wrong!

anyway, thanks for taking a few minutes to read all this. you are now a "power user!"
i just hope the person running the server notices!

greetings to all from sunny detroit.......

sitting here at work with the radio on, making an observation
that i have noticed sinead getting a lot more radio time than
usual these days, and can't help but think it's due to the fact
that she or at least her band is working on the new indigo
project.   could this be industry aniticpation for the upcoming
projects ...???.

if so, it's working for me because everytime i hear sinead on the
radio these days, i can't help but get geeked about the new
album....wonder about how production is going, etc....

which brings me to another related question for the list to discuss,
who do you think will benefit most from the upcoming collaboration?
indigos??  or sinead and her band?
or neither.  ....(it's the win/winoption)

my thoughts are that it seems that indigos have been on a constant
upstart - surge of popularity - throughout their career, and that they are
(have) peeking recently with successes of lilith and shaming of the sun.
(the girls get airtime in our market fairly regularly, as is probably true of
the mid to large sized radio markets around the country.)  whereas, sinead
had a flash in the pan popularity late 80s/early 90s and then disappeared
with the controversies - with tearing up the pope's picture, etc....no big
waves
or albums since "i do not want what i haven't got" - or whatever that album's
title
is, i don't know if i got it right.  so i think sinead has more to gain in the
collaboration.....getting reacclamated into mainstream, more exposure.....

my .02.......what do you think????

happy days to all......it's the weekend!  =0)

i'm a huge sinead fan (haven't ever seen her live, but it's because the one
time i had a opportunity to see her, it was a week after she said she would
never play a song from her first album ever again.

sinead's first album probably is one of my favorites of all time, "troy" is
one of, if the the favorite song (with the exception of "ghost", joy
divisions "atmosphere" fugazi's "suggestion" or a couple rem tunes) (okay, i
am not all that devisive, so sue me...

i honestly don't think of sinead as a radio artist, (heck, i can't think of
any of the music i love being played often on the radio, i wince when i hear
artists i admire getting overplayed, like sara m., i mean adia is a great
song the first ten million times, okay?)
>my thoughts are that it seems that indigos have been on a constant

i don't look at their lilith shows being all that ground breaking, i did see
them after tracy chapman (at lilith '97 i believe she played before) and
they were *such* a letdown, maybe it's the festival atmosphere, but i think
they have done some incredible shows consistently through out the years.

i don't see sinead caring about mainstream success - i would almost venture
to say the success of i do not want hurt her artistically far more than
people realize. gospel oak (her last ep) is tremendous, - like artistically
appealing - not overtly commericialistic, like an old ani cd, or perhaps a
good cheryl wheeler concert, it's an eclectic , almost acquired taste (like
a good microbrew! perfect analogy, sorta...)

   i don't know . . . i think a) more people know who sinead o'connor is than

hey you all!  god save our precious used cd stores--they provide such a
wealth of hard-to-find stuff (at least compared to most well-known cd
places).  i was delighted to find come's "near life experience," and on
a whim and some advice from someone on the melissa ferrick list, i also
bought imogen heap's "i megaphone."  both are great!  obviously, thanks
to jill and a loop tape or so, i was already aware of come's ability to
kick ass, but i'd never heard imogen, so i was pleasantly surprised at
how great she was.  she's got a very unusual voice--check her out at
cdnow if you get the chance.

i have a musical question: can anyone tell me more about sue foley, the
finn brothers, or mars needs women?  i'd really appreciate some feedback
on them.

okay, here's my technical question--i just bought my mouse about a year
ago, it worked just fine until yesterday, and now it refuses to move
horizontally--only vertically.  argh!  there's no gunk on the ball, the
mousepad, or in the workings inside the mouse.  i even used compressed
air to remove any dust from the inside.  anyway, if anyone has any
advice that would prevent me from having to buy another mouse, i'd
really appreciate it!!! :)

thanks for letting me rant, y'all!

oh, just so this won't have been completely devoid of igc, i think that
sinead has the most to gain as far as popularity and positive feedback
in the ig/sinead/band collaboration.  sure, everyone knows sinead, but
most people don't have a very good opinion of her--since everyone
decided to ignore her music and just judge her by her political views.
anyway, since ig are becoming more well-respected as musicians and
overall people, i think sinead can only benefit from being associated
with them.

just my opini-ohne...

hope your week was less hellacious than mine!

march 24, 1999 -- usa today

'bridges' to cuba, built note by note

by justin pritchard

nearly 50 american musicians, from gladys knight to bonnie raitt to burt
bacharach, are writing history through song with their cuban counterparts
during a week-long festival held despite ongoing tensions between havana and
washington.

the music bridges around the world festival, produced by los angeles
songwriter alan roy scott, began sunday evening when a planeload of
performers arrived in havana.

this week, the u.s. and european artists will compose new songs with the
elite of cuba's music community, among them salsero juan formell and cuban
jazz master chucho valdes. the festival culminates monday with a performance
of the new works.

"i'm really pleased to be here and thrilled to learn from great musicians,"
said peter buck of r.e.m.

organizers picked the names of american and cuban artists from a hat: raitt,
for example, will work with actor-turned-composer woody harrelson. despite
the random drawing, indigo girls amy ray and emily saliers ended up
together. each u.s. pair will work with a pair of cubans.

late arrivals like jimmy buffett and james taylor will come primarily for
the concert at the 5,000-seat karl marx theater, the same venue that hosted
billy joel and others in 1979, the last such american star-studded event in
havana.

both cuban and american promoters have taken pains to insist that the event
is not political.

"i'm just here to make music. we have no interest in politics," scott told
reporters. "music is one powerful tool in the world that can and should be
able to build bridges between people and cultures in a way that other things
cannot."

arturo sandoval, the cuban-born musician who recently became a u.s. citizen,
urged american artists not to attend because the event might reflect well on
fidel castro. "the cuban government always uses celebrities . . . for
political propaganda purposes," he said at february's grammy awards. he
asked stars not to "let the cuban government use their image for propaganda."

hi,

sorry for all the bandwidth usage, but i was wondering if there were any
fans out there with indigo girls ticket stubs that they might be interested
in scanning and emailing me a copy of the scan.  i would like to add the
images to the appearances section of the lifeblood site.  please email me
privately if you would like to contribute.

if you have not had a chance to check out the lifeblood site, the url is
http://www.lifeblood.net and it contains the following:

1. over 3000 articles (and counting) dating from 1980 to the present
about/or referencing indigo girls
2. lyrics for 174 original and cover songs performed by indigo girls
3. in depth information on 134 releases by/or including indigo girls,
including scans of over 40 of them
4. a comprehensive listing of tour dates including information back as far
as 1981
5. setlists for 572 shows dating back to 1981
6. search pages for all the catagories of information
7. links to sites with direct ties to indigo girls
8. crossword puzzles based on indigo girls trivia

the site is completely free of advertising and is intended to provide as
much information as possible in an easy to access format.  it  has been
around since 1995 and is still very much a work in progress, new information
is added usually at least once a week.

thanks for your time and enjoy,

carolyn

hello y'all!

i had a great spring break this past week, skiing at mammoth mountain in
central california.  yesterday afternoon, i was about to go to the
bathroom, and suddenly, i hear this, "amy ray of the indigo girls"
mentioned on vh-1.  i hyperventilate for a few seconds, and then calmed
down when i realized this vh-1 veejay was just introducing shawn
mullins' video for his new single, "shimmer".  and then, i was just
being silly, and watched the whole video for any sign of amy or emily or
anything indigo. ha!

the veejay just said something like, "amy ray of the indigo girls
discovered shawn mullins and had him open for them for several concerts
in the past..." etc.  shawn was shown, talking about how comfortable it
was to film "shimmer" at one of his old haunts in atlanta, ga.

well, wishing you all to shimmer and shine in your lives,
diane :)

hmmm, its like destiny or something!!  can you imagine?  weren't there
like 100 us people there?   its too random really....

they're soulmates or something?   i remember there's that fanfiction
someone wrote about xena and gabrielle being earlier reincarnations of
amy and emily and that they were destined to always be together as
friends....
i think thats the proof!
though i suppose they may get tired of the "grouping" together...like
they are 1 person or something.  i noticed that, in many "thank you's"
in other people's liner notes, that they are always listed together.
anyway...its sorta spooky...but i bet they laughed!!!

hello to all in the land of indigo,

just thought i would let everyone know that on cnn headline news that
footage of the musicians who are in cuba, including clips and mention of
indigo girls, has been aired during the the 'lifestyles' segment at 10:25 am
and 11:25 am, and will probably run in that segment several more times, if
not all day.  there is footage of amy playing a mandolin and emily playing
guitar while collaborating with cuban musicians.  hope you can catch it.

take care and peace!

lesbians in the house!" and everyone started laughing.  and, of course, he
never even played any ig (i was wondering--what, the power of two dance

also, i'm writing my huge, comprehensive senior paper about--ick--3 of

any good websites where i could find reviews or analysis of his speeches??
i'd be eternally grateful... :)

thanks!

sorry about the "false alarm" on the me bio.  it seems this is like the second
or third time that the show was not shown.  according to a later update email
i received... they are claiming it is not quite finished.  which seems strange for
them to make the statement they will be showing it if it wasn't quite done.  so,
i don't know if perhaps other things have come up in me's life that they wanted
to add or something.

anyway, i will keep my ears & eyes open and try to let y'all know if they send
out any further info on when the show will be on.  other than that, contact the
lifetime web site or just go there & keep a watch on the intimate portraits that
will be coming up!

again, sorry... i was hoping to see it myself!
later,
twink!

hello,

i've still got leftover list tees - about twenty of 'em in varrying sizes
and colors. soooo.... if you want one (or two, or three), email me asap
and i'll tell you what i've got left. i've got mostly xl and xxl, but
there are a couple of m and one xxxl. please don't ask for a shirt unless
you can (and will) send me the money within the next two or three days.
i'm really hoping to wrap this stuff up soon!

thanks, and take care! :)

by the way, shirts are still $11 or $12 each, available in either
off-white or indigo, with a design that should still be at:

mime-version: 1.0
content-type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

hey, y'all...this is probably more interesting to some of the longer-term
list members...

okay, since i'm a geek (which all of you already know :) ), i've saved a
whole bunch of old list posts over the last year and 1/2 that i've been on
the list, all tucked away in a nice folder labeled "indigo thoughts."  i was
looking through them just now as i wait for bethany and her boyfriend to get
here, and it was really sad!  not that the list isn't a nice thing now, but
do you all remember all the crazy, whacked-out (yes, i'm a flygirl disguised
as a midwestern white chick) threads we had??  see if these ring a bell:

**indigo puns  (sherlyn: "a man goes to see a hypnotherapist because he's
suffering from kid fears.  she cures him; a little too well in fact... a few
days later he's out walking in the country and happens to walk by emily's
house.  she's out in the garden weeding her tomatoes with her pets.  he goes
up to her and proudly exclaims, 'i'm in love with your goats!'")

**mister limes/misheard lines  (jessica: "'we'll amuse ourselves one day
with these memories we'll trace.'" what the line is in my mind: 'will we
meet ourselves some day?  with these mammories we'll trace.' and now i know
it's wrong/incorrect, but i think it's so funny the thought of emily and
whoever meeting each other some day to trace their tits!")

**alternate song titles  (flora: "made an ig tape for my mom a while ago
(who, by the way, is really into them now!) and she kept asking me, didn't i
like the "cinnamon floss" song? finally i made her attempt to sing it for
me - she hummed a little and sang "cinnamon floss" - i eventually realized
that the song was joking, and she was getting a little confused on the
"sentiments given, sentiments lost" (y'know, cinnamon floss!)")

i don't know...call me sentimental and whiny, but i miss those days!  i know
that the girls aren't touring and there isn't a new album to squeal about
and compare notes on yet, but this list needs a bit of life breathed into
it!  i know that a lot of people left, but there are a lot of us still
here--let's do something!!! :)

so here's what i propose...i really miss hearing everyone's stories--it
seems like, anymore, everyone is too afraid to post anything really
personal, and before people were pouring their guts out!  let's discuss the
ig song that, when you first heard it, immediately reminded you of some
incident in your life, good or bad, and why, and all that fun stuff...

i'll go first... :)

when i first heard ghost, it immediately made me think about my high school
boyfriend that died suddenly of lupus in 1995 (i was just about to
graduate).  the whole "letter on the desktop...from our adolescent war" made
me think of a note that he had written me waaaay back in 7th grade, one of
those "check yes or no" type deals. :)  so it started way back then, we
liked each other on and off all through high school, and my junior year we
actually dated seriously, a progression that sorta makes me think of emily's
imagery of the mississippi river (starts small, but then builds until "at
this point you rush right through me and i start to drown").

the point at which i felt myself drowning was, of course, when he died.
memories just wouldn't leave me alone, and i really *did* feel as though i
was in love with a ghost--all of a sudden, he just wasn't *there*.  although
i didn't hear this song until a year 1/2 after he died, it still had a very
strong effect on me.  march 16th marked 4 years since he died, and the song
still makes me think about it.

anyway, that's just my feelings about that song--one of her best, i think...
:)

okay, your turn! :)

love y'all,
shannon
