another fan has come forward with server space, and as
a result the following files are now available:

first time offerings:  general foods coffee house
sessions (radio program), in with the out crowd
(bootleg cd), cleveland (09/29/96).

files that have been offered before:  the white dot
(3/16/88), wrek (02/27/89), new york (06/28/94), lilith
fair (08/12/97), shades of indigo (promo cd), blood and
fire (bootleg cd), complicated girls (bootleg cd), the
ep and more (bootleg cd), levees that break in my heart
(bootleg cd), the devils in our bones (bootleg cd), and
a michelle malone outtake.

to the best of my knowledge, problems encountered with
other sites (missing and corrupted files) have been
corrected on this new site.

please email me to get the site address, you will
receive setlists for all the files at that time.  it
may be up to 24 hours from the time you email me to the
time you receive a response.  when you get the address,
please do not post it on the web, in email lists, or to
news groups.

if anyone out there is interested in starting a tree,
all of the files being offered on this server add up to
709mb, almost all of which would fit on a single cdr if
left in the mp3 format.  i do not have the ability to
burn a disc, but if someone else out there could it
would get the files in the hands of a lot more fans.

thanks,

janet

in my experience, a lot of the cool stuff has almost always been 'way below
the radio'.....and it seems truer still today as tight playlists and what
was once called 'payola' are the determining factors controlling
airplay.....the good news is that there is a wealth of talent waiting to be
discovered.....as the listees' compilation tape and my own personal
experience in the western ny music scene bear witness......

fortunately, the internet provides an alternative means of spreading the
word....a true proletarian voice for the new millenium......i've been
introduced to so many new artists through posts on this list and others, and
many more through the recommendations of online friends.....

the music industry (thankfully with some notable exceptions) is not
concerned with artistic content or free expression......the industry
produces a disposable product intended for consumption by those with short
attention spans.....yet below that surface there are thousands of artists
and musicians creating vital works of beauty, intellect and passion.....i am
so thankful for forums such as this one which provide an opportunity to
delve beneath the surface.....

peace, love and harmony.....

did you all see this?
if yes, shoot me.
if no, you're welcome.
i especially like the 'stock up on canned goods' part.  yes, folks,
seeing rose polenzani perform is truly a mind-blasting, cabinet-blowing
experience.  you'll just have to go to a show to hear what i mean.  the
girl's simply incredible.  words do no justice. hey, my thalia likes
her.  you should too.  peer pressure, cave in to it.
so.
you want blood-curdling, toe-curling good music? go to a rose show.
you need proof? you want boots? need to stick your hand in my side? oh
thomas, email me and see the error of your ways.

be happy.  even if i owe you an email (robin, stephanie, etc etc etc).

i'm sitting here in my office listening to the "emily boot" whilst i work away,
and closer to fine just came on.  now, i could be wrong, but it sounds to me
like emily is singing amy's part (with the audience doing her part)!

which brings me to the point of this message: i wonder what it would sound like
if they switched parts for closer to fine or any other of their songs?

(who thinks it was rude for the fans to yell "romeo & juliet" when it was emily
performing and not amy)

we had a huge april fools day prank played on us at my school.
last week, someone posted signs that said "vote!!!  either 311 or the
indigo girls are coming to campus.  vote for your choice!"  now, last
year, we were supposed to have ig, but russ double booked them and they
were playing a pro-choice (go them!!!) benefit concert that day, so they
didn't come.  so i didn't really expect our programming board to be able
to get them this year.  but just for the hell of it, i voted for ig
anyway.  this morning in the student center, there was a big banner that
said "april fools!  the  311 or the indigo girls vote was a joke."  ha ha
ha, very funny.  anyway, i didn't have my hopes up, so i wasn't upset...

hi y'all.......

i've been having kind of an amazing week and i wanted to share a bit of
it.....and maybe offer a ray of hope to some of the wonderfully talented
folks hereabouts.....

my friend pamela ryder's cd, "soul ryder 6" has finally been
released.....pamela is a truly original singer with an amazing voice and
great lyrics.....i had the pleasure of contributing my talents to two
tracks.....harmonica on "charmed and harmed" and lead guitar on "california
song".....working with her has been for me the fulfillment of a lifelong
dream.....

another very dear friend, katie miller, is working on her long overdue cd
with plans for a september release....she's asked me to contribute to it as
well.....katie is an impassioned vocalist and a super writer with a lot of
variety in her repertoire and a great stage presence......

another close friend, leah prentiss (who prefers to be known simply as lea)
is receiving airplay on the buffalo state college radio station of a pair of
tracks that we recorded live together at the "nice girls don't...." show
that i organized last july......(hey ma, that's me on the radio).....never
thought i'd see the day.....we did a gig together this evening at a local
coffeehouse to a very receptive crowd.....lea and her younger sister robyn
treated the crowd to to an impromptu version of "closer to fine".......

wednesday night was another landmark night for the music fan in me......two
other friends, aerin tedesco and alison pipitone (she has a cut on the
soundtrack of "all over me") took part in a buffalo song project show
featuring women songwriters.....an annual event that is always a great
musical experience.....for me, the best part (aside from my friends'
performances) was meeting and hearing two wonderfully gifted songwriters
from out of town......jolie christine rickman and tamara j. brown......

jolie, from syracuse, ny played first......drawing heavily from her "sublime
detonation" cd......and captivated the audience with her voice and her stage
presence......the tongue-in cheek "love song for newt" was a big
favorite......check out her website at: http://jolie.rootmedia.org

tamara, who hails from ithaca, ny closed the night with a great set of
original tunes featuring her driving rhythm guitar and expressive
alto......tamara's music has a great bluesy edge to it, and her guitar work
is awe-inspiring......her cd is called "what is mine".....you can email her
at tjb1@lycosemail.com  (btw.....an after-show conversation revealed that
tamara is a major ig fan....and also donates her talents to many worthwhile
benefits......)

on the subject of benefits......lea and i will be playing a pro-choice
benefit at nietzsche's in buffalo on april 14......it seems operation rescue
has targeted buffalo once again this year.....i'll post more pertinent
information when it becomes available......

peace, love & harmony.....
tim

there is *no comparison* between my md boots and my analog cassette boots.  even the loss between my md masters and analog cassettes is dramatic, and i connect my equipment with good cables.

one of the best features of booting with mds is that you don't have to turn it over after 45 or 50 minutes... a 74-minute md will often get you to an encore without swapping.

>  any brand to look for?
>certain features?  i'm not a big sony fan....

sony pretty much owns the market for portable recorders, there were no opitions when i bought mine a couple of years ago (i have the mz-r30).  but i have the kenwood 1050md deck at home.

many audiophiles prefer dat, but i prefer the convenience of direct access on a disc (i.e., you can mark tracks and go directly to them like a cd), and the ease of editing on the fly (by marking "tracks" -- even if it's just to isolate an screamer between songs -- and then moving them, deleting them, or just programming your player to skip them so you can make a perfect dubbing copy without messing with the master).  i also like being able to label the tracks and the discs, and little stuff like the auto-datestamp is cool too.

they're also perfect for mix tapes.  my ever-evolving "favorite ig songs" md is an example... easy to delete one track and pop a new one in there to keep things interesting.

there's lots of info (too much?!) at <http://www.minidisc.org>, and my favorite place to buy stereo equipment is <http://www.crutchfield.com>.  crutchfield has a good selection, and *very* knowledgeable technicians manning the phones that can tell you in great detail the features of various models.  they even pay return shipping if you decide you don't like it.  if you're not buying anything today, at least get on their mailing list for catalogs.  they have md faqs at:

        http://www.crutchfield.com/infolib/s-w0cd7gvu2nc/homeindex.asp?id=minidisc-introduction
        http://www.crutchfield.com/infolib/s-w0cd7gvu2nc/homeindex.asp?id=minidisc-glossary
        http://www.crutchfield.com/infolib/s-w0cd7gvu2nc/homeindex.asp?id=minidisc-faq

unfortunately, even at crutchfield they don't seem to offer much more than sony md equipment online, though i think there are more in the catalog, you could call and ask.

for those of you considering buying md player/recorders, the
amusingly-named <http://www.minidisco.com/> has some *hot* deals on
portable recorders (many non-sonys, including a sharp recorder which is
$209 after rebate -- including an optical cable!).  i haven't done business
with them, but they've been around for a long time and they have adherents
at minidisc.org, so i think it's safe to assume that they're reputable.
they also have a good selection of mds at good pricces.

hey all-
i am in love with my minidisc and i even  think it rivals dat in it's
ability and quality, blowing cd's out of the water.  as long as you have
a good mic, taping can be easy and goodsounding.  i recommend sharp, it
is better than sony and really easy to use. i have yet to use mine in a
stealth taping situation, but it is smaller than any other recorder and
would be simple to sneak in.

just to nitpick, in case there are any avant-garde-musician-wannabes
out there - md does not rival dats in quality. the input which it gets is
compressed - which isn't a big big deal, as long as you don't want to do
any waveform manipulation - however, much like mp3s, you will hear the
difference on hi-fi equipment.
we use them for recording impromptu jams in the living room, and
they're great for bootlegging, but you're not going to want to use them to
record any samples or anything like that.

i would send it to the fan club, myself.  if you send it to epic, well
epic is a big company and things tend to get lost.  send it to the fan
club c/o rcam... address can be found in the cd cases.  (use the address
inside sots - if you go in one of the older albums, the address is
different.)

hey y'all!

i'm hoping some of you recording artist people out there could give me
some advice - i've essentially been asked for my "demo" - but the four
track stuff i have,  in the words of some newly acquired friends who are
clearly objective cuz they have nothing to gain or lose, "does not do
justice to the quality of my voice."
and i really want to impress these people if'n i can.

so i'm going to just do it - go into a studio and record a four song
demo.
i think.

but i need advice - i've spoken to some studios, just called up and
shmoozed - and i've been told by some that analog is actually better -
then you remaster it digitally, and get that warm analog sound - of
course, that's cheaper by the hour, too, but you *do* have to get it
mastered.  others have just assumed i'd want to use digital, which is
kinda what i assumed....

and on top of that, how much should i be paying an hour?  for the studio
plus tech?  and do i need to get a digital demo mastered, or is the
final mix okay?

what the hell am i doing? acccckkk!!!

i haven't a clue!!

anyone wanna be kind?  help??
help!!!!!

tim?  tara?  anyone?

i appreciate any help and advice and info you can send my way!

peace,

hey everybody,
i've just returned from an awesome spring break in the panhandle of
florida......with my mom. i guess it wasn't so bad, even the 15 hour car
ride to get there. i controlled the music selections we listened to and
needless to say it was all indigo- cd's, bootlegs...you name it we
listened to it. i was in heaven. my mom went from saying, "you're
putting in  another indigo girls cd? we're not listening to that stuff
the whole way down, i hope you know" to "play that buy him a ring song
again". i'd say she's hooked. oh yeah, i had one more ig moment that i
have to share....we had just payed our bill and were ready to leave ruby
tuesday's when i faintly heard a familiar tune above all of the noise in
the restaraunt. my mom just looked at me like, why do you have that
goofy smile on your face, and then she heard it too. least complicated
was playing! i made her sit back down at our table so we could listen to
the whole thing which really confused our waiter. i had to contain
myself from shhh-ing everyone around me so i could hear it better. stuff
like that just makes my day. i'm sure most of you can relate :-) done
rambling now.....

i always figured that m&k was her own label, and that she culled
it from the lyrics of b&f rather than the other way around.

i was watching the movie, and then this familiar song plays:

i'm not the sort of person                      (at this point, i say...hey...
who falls in and quickly out of love  (i know that song...
but to you i gave my affection          (amy sings those lines...
right from the start
i have a lover who loves me
how could i break such a heart
yet still you get my attention          (i'm still thinking really hard..)

why do you come here                    (hey, hey, that's...
when you know i've got troubles enough  (i start singing along
why do you call me                                              (outloud in the theatre
when you know i can't answer the phone  (but it doesn't matter because
and make me lie when i don't want to    (joan armatrading and her
and make someone else                                   (voice and music is turned up.
some kind of an unknowing fool
make me stay when i should not
are you so strong
or is all the weakness in me            (song fades here...)

that song made the movie perfect for me!  (except they put so much
makeup on that guy from seventh heaven!!)

love and ig smiles,
diane

i *love* this song. believe it or not, the first time *i* ever heard
it, it was neither amy nor joan armatrading who sang it... it was mellissa
etheridge... but i got to hear *her* version of it because of this list:-)
met a really good friend of mine through this list about three years ago (
hiya trace ). she and i got to writing + we decided to share music with each
other. the first song on the tape was me doing the weakness in me. it blew
me away... gotta love mellissa... anyhoo; i now have the boot of amy singing
it (which of course is a favorite ), but no more tape of me. i played *her*
so much the tape kinda died :-) anyone out there know where i can get my
hands on an me version?
peace n' good stuff in yer day...

hey everyone..

not much ig related material.. but this article caught me funny. can you
imagine all the bucks it takes to pay for an education at emory? it appears
that they are hard at work researching the mystery of peeps... oh, i had the
chance to walk around emory in february. to say that it was a great place
would be an understatement. to bad i did all my university education in the
northeast....

scientists tackle 'peeps' riddle

by shelley hill
.c the associated press

atlanta (april 2) - the question baffled two emory university researchers:
what are peeps - those marshmallow birds that appear in stores around easter
- anyway?

on a sugar buzz after devouring ice cream sundaes with one too many peeps on
top, gary falcon and jim zimring set out to explain the colorful, spongy
creatures.

''we were really just wondering what peeps were after eating a dozen or two
and so we immediately went to the kitchen and started trying to boil them,''
said falcon, a computer administrator at the atlanta school.

falcon and zimring, a medical student, were astounded that peeps didn't
dissolve in water. in fact, the only liquid they could dissolve the candy in
was phenol, a chemical used for dissolving proteins.

their conclusion: peeps aren't mostly sugar after all. they are made of
gelatin, sugar and corn syrup.

after that discovery, the researchers decided peeps deserved a more rigorous
examination.

they tested the birds' reaction to cold by submerging them in liquid
nitrogen. the result: they froze. they tested peeps' reaction to low-pressure
environments by putting them in a vacuum. the result: they shriveled up.

and because the candy is often found in party environments, they tested
peeps' reaction to alcohol and cigarettes. when a peep was floated in rubbing
alcohol with a lit cigarette in its mouth, it ended up as a ball of charred
goo.

the study was featured on cnn last year after the researchers began
conducting their sugar-induced studies. they planned new research over the
winter and have been busy since peeps arrived in stores in mid-february.

in a new study for 1999, falcon and zimring surgically separated a group of
peeps, which are ''born'' as conjoined quintuplets.

falcon and zimring's next goal, inspired by john glenn's return to space, is
to study the effects of space travel and aging on the peep population. they
wouldn't say how they plan to get the birds into space.

the researchers, both 29, didn't receive any grant money for their tests, but
were careful to use scientific methods.

''the results might be absolutely useless, but it is science more or less,''
falcon said.

they used an emory lab, which was ok with the school. ''we've watched this
with amusement,'' spokeswoman nancy seideman said.

so has just born, the bethlehem, pa., company that makes peeps. ''we make
candy,'' said spokeswoman rose craig, ''and candy is supposed to be fun.''

the song that is mentioned in relation to this movie, i believe is called
"the weakness in me", and it is a cover of a joan armatrading song, i think!
i wish i could get to my bootlegs right now, then i could answer with more
confidence! it is on one of the early bootlegs.

as for your song quote and question of where it comes from....it is from the
song "fugitive", which is off of the swamp ophelia cd (and one of my all
time favs!!!!). hope that helps!

peace, laura

hey!  all this bootleg chat has given me fond memories of my heavy trading
days of years past.  btw, this joan armatrading song is definitely weakness
in me.  i have it sung by ig on several early boots.  it is definitely a
fave cover of mine.  i have also heard melissa etheridge cover it on her
unplugged venture.  it is a wonderful song.  in fact i just downloaded the
chords tonight from olga and it appears to be a very basic guitar playing
song for those novice guitar players like myself who have yet to master the
f chord--i hate f!!  any tips on mastering f will be taken with
appreciation.  and forget b!

anyway, i write with a request as well.  i used to trade bootlegs
(trade-not sell or gain any profit by) all the time.  it has been awhile
but i am interested in obtaining some newer boots.  i have not heard any of
the post sots newer songs and would like to have a glimpse before seeing
them this summer at nff or lilith.  if anyone has boots of these newer
songs or of a post 1997 ig show i would be very willing to set up a trade.
i have a pretty extensive bootlist of shows-mostly from 1994 and back.

before i get totally inundated with requests, i honestly don't have time to
make random copies for folks wanting to get a boot collection started.  i
am really looking to trade with someone who has some new material.  as much
as i would love to help people with obtaining older boots i just don't have
the spare time.  no i am not that important--i am just moving soon and will
have limited free time to just copy stuff.  so yes this is a shamelessly
selfish request to trade for my own benefit only.  i promise to make
copying offers later!   thanks to anyone willing to trade for new material.
ciao for now.

prices recently. you may even know that opec cut production in order to pull
gas prices up. but did you know that this was done with the blessing and
encouragement of the us government and the major oil companies? it's not hard
to figure that profits were down, despite the increase in consumption and
that it would be too noticeable to slap a new gas tax on low priced gas.

a group has begun organizing a gas free day across the united states. this is
a day when they hope to encourage as many drivers as they can to stay away
from the pumps. the date selected is april 30, 1999. buy your gas on the 29th
or on the 1st, but think about the impact a consumer can have on this
artificially created shortage when you multiply that consumer by a million or
so.

there is no good reason for the current jump in gas prices other than in the
name of corporate greed. we can fight back and this is the simplest way for
you to make your voice heard. circle the date april 30th on your calendar...
contact your friends and relatives... remind corporate america who really
runs this ship!

i hope you'll support this and forward the message to anyone you can think of.

it has been 10 years since the exxon valdez spilled it's oil cargo along the
pacific coast. that spill cost millions of dollars in ecological damage, lost
wages and more. a jury agreed that exxon must be held accountable for the
accident and that the "survivors" be compensated.

to this date, exxon has ignored their responsibility! in typical fashion, the
interest being charged on their unpaid fine is less than what the money can
earn in the free market. exxon has placed their corporate profits ahead of
any sense of humanity or fairplay and have yet to pay out one red cent!.

i've elected to not only continue boycotting exxon, but to try and make
others aware of who they may be doing business with.

the following web address  <a href="http://www.exxonvaldez.org/">survivors of
the exxon valdez oil spill
</a>  will give you more info than i can ever hope to in this e-mail. i hope
you'll take the time to visit it and will join me in an attempt to get exxon
to do the right thing.

hey folks,

my good buddy jay is one of 3,000 great people participating in the 6th
annual california aids ride. this ride takes place the second week of june
and goes from san francisco to los angeles (somewhere in the neighborhood
of 560 miles). it's a fantastic event for an extremely worthy cause. you
can learn more about the ride by visiting the official website at
http://www.aidsride.org/.

some of you might know jay from our time following the ig around together.
he's a great guy and could really use some help raising the $2500 he needs
to participate. as an incentive, i've got some photos available to reward
your generous donation. you'll receive a color  8 x 10 photo for each $25
donation. if you feel inspired to give $100 you'll get the full four photo
set and an ig t-shirt. if you can manage $150, you'll get all the items
mentioned so far as well as the new live blue cover shed your skin e.p. w/
5 live tracks. for $250, jay and i will be your best friend and you'll get
all the items listed plus a very exclusive 2 cd live set ..a complete live
show from 1994.

of course $25 is by no means a minimum..jay and the california aids ride
will very much appreciate anything you can spare.

if you'd like to participate, we can accept most forms of payment. the
preferred method would be a check or money order payable to: california
aids ride. please include jay's rider number: 3058 in the memo section of
your check. i can also process credit card donations through my fortunate
ones site and send a check on your behalf.

please mail all correspondence/payments to me at:

joe hamilton
1424 southwood dr.
ashland oh 44805

i'll send out all reward items and then forward the checks as a group to
the california aids ride. i'll include a little note mentioning the list
and i'll be sending (or perhaps hand delivering) a list t-shirt for jay to
wear on the ride.  after the ride, i'll make sure some photos are posted
for everyone to check out.  we know that the ig have been active in
supporting aids related causes and i hope you will too! please feel free to
write with any and all questions/comments.
we are fortunate ones,
joe

everyone needs to go to www.e-thepeople.com and sign the petition which
protests the ban on gay marriage in texas.  it's only got about 20
people on it so far, and i think the thousand or so peeps on this list

don't know if this is common knowledge, but i got my first glimpse of the 1999

yes, the first time i had ever heard this song, it was done by melissa
etheridge and featured on the cd "ain't nothing but a she thing"...i saw
the video on the accompanying mtv special (and haven't beeen able to track
it down since) and watched it with my then girlfriend...well it was a long
distance thing, so we watched it at the same time while we were on the
phone together *heh*

then i saw melissa do another joan song on her duets show (love and
affection) and i knew that i had to get my hands on some of her stuff. i
was thrilled when i saw that the girls loved her like melissa - enough to
cover twim...and even more thrilled that it is on two boots i have (purple
parrot and blue food) *grins* i just had to share (cause i haven't for a
while) *grins*

love and all things indigo,

hkf's,
sorry for the forward - but i just had to pass on this one i got from
another list...  enjoy!!!
"if the world is night, shine my life like a light"-es

the natural life cycle of mailing lists

every list seems to go through the same cycle:

1.initial enthusiasm (people introduce themselves, and gush a lot about how
wonderful it is to find kindred souls).

2.evangelism (people moan about how few folks are posting to the list, and
brainstorm recruitment strategies).

3.growth (more and more people join, more and more lengthy threads develop,
occasional off-topic threads pop up).

4.community (lots of threads, some more relevant than others; lots of
information and advice is exchanged; experts help other experts as well as
less experienced colleagues; friendships develop; people tease each other;
newcomers are welcomed with generosity and patience; everyone -- newbie and
expert alike -- feels comfortable asking questions, suggesting answers, and
sharing opinions).

5.discomfort with diversity (the number of messages increases dramatically;
not every thread is fascinating to every reader; people start complaining
about the signal-to-noise ratio; person 1 threatens to quit if *other*
people don't limit discussion to person 1's pet topic; person 2 agrees with
person 1; person 3 tells 1 & 2 to lighten up; more bandwidth is wasted
complaining about off-topic threads than is used for the threads
themselves; everyone gets annoyed).

6.finally:

1.smug complacency and stagnation

(the purists flame everyone who asks an 'old' question or responds with
humor to a serious post; newbies are rebuffed; traffic drops to a
doze-producing level of a few minor issues; all interesting discussions
happen by private email and are limited to a few participants; the purists
spend lots of time self-righteously congratulating each other on keeping
off-topic threads off the list).

or

2.maturity

(a few people quit in a huff; the rest of the participants stay near stage
4, with stage 5 popping up briefly every few weeks; many people wear out
their second or third 'delete' key, but the list lives contentedly ever
after).

i've got melissa etheridge doing the weakness in me on a cd called "ain't nuthin' but
a

luscious
jackson, and others...
it was done in 1995 so i'd imagine there should still be copies of it out there...
might try to see
if cd now or lady slipper carry it!

most newer cds players have no problems with cd-rs... some older players are finicky about them (and, to complicate things further, some of them will play some brands and not others!)

minidisc is a totally different format, they're smaller than a floppy disc but ahave a similar look.

if you live in the atlanta area, and have some money you'd like to part with,
emily will be performing the "song" with vonda next saturday (april 17th) at
a local fundraiser.   apparently her appearance was supposed to be a
surprise, but someone forgot to tell that to the local radio station that's
been talking about it all week.

the money is being raised for the chastain horse park, and will include a
concert by vonda, special appearance by emily and also christopher reeve will
be giving a speech.   tickets are $250 each, and includes dinner and open
bar.   there will also be a silent auction.   i'd imagine this is a highclass
affair - the chastain area in atlanta is one of the more affluent
neighborhoods in the city.

if you're interested in attending, i can pass on the phone number of the
organizers.  please email me privately.

hey folks... thanks to all of you who've been writing me in support of my
thesis-writing.  it was slow going, but i got most of it done--definitely
enough to turn in as a rough draft.

wait!  there's more...  that was at 5 a.m.

when i woke up at 8 this morning and tried to open it up to print, i see the
oh-so-lovely "file corrupted: access denied" or something to that effect.
tried it on different computers, i can open any other file on that disk--my
entire thesis is gone.  finito.  i have to start all over again, and i don't
know what the hell i'm going to do about the part that's due today.  sorry
to bore you all with this, but i figured by some miracle there may be some
technological wizard lurking out there who has a magic cure for me.  if not,
thanks for listening to me whine.  <sniff, sniff>

shannon

p.s. the misheard lyrics thing is still up for grabs... let me know if you
want a copy.
