hey peoples...

first of all, *thanks* to the many of you that offered your sympathies and
advice about my paper.  the bad news is that it *is* forever lost and i have
to start over.  the good news is, my prof gave me an extension, so i have a
week to recover.  <whew>

secondly, i had a really obscure ig moment--pretty dumb really. :)  one of
my friends sent me this stupid forward (we all have a friend like that,
don't we?) that says "if your birthday is on such and such a date, then you
are like *this* tree!" and then gives a description of what each "tree" is
like.  y'know, like "the pine tree is quiet and calm during a crisis and
loves to make others laugh," or something equally dumb.

but of course, i skimmed through it anyway, and what tree was i?  "cedar
tree," of course! :)

hey,
well i figured i'd share my ig luck with ya'll.  i was on my way to
my lacrosse game yesterday when i heard least complicated and they never ever
play ig on the radio in baltimore.  we were playing a team that we knew would
be hard and also it was the first game that counted on our record and ranking
and all that fun stuff.  but anyway it was such good luck and i told my
friend that and of course she just doesn't understand the whole ig thing and
so she just laughed at me.  so we won the game 11-2.  it was awesome cuz i'm
the goalie too so i'll just shut up now.

the silent superstar
by paul simon

my opinions regarding the baseball legend joe dimaggio would be of
no particular interest to the general public were it not for the fact that
30
years ago i wrote the song ''mrs. robinson,'' whose lyric ''where have you
gone, joe dimaggio? a nation turns its lonely eyes to you'' alluded to and
in
turn probably enhanced dimaggio's stature in the american iconographic
landscape.

a few years after ''mrs. robinson'' rose to no. 1 on the pop charts, i found
myself dining at an italian restaurant where dimaggio was seated with a
party
of friends. i'd heard a rumor that he was upset with the song and had
considered a lawsuit, so it was with some trepidation that i walked over and
introduced myself as its composer. i needn't have worried: he was perfectly
cordial and invited me to sit down, whereupon we immediately fell into
conversation about the only subject we had in common.

''what i don't understand,'' he said, ''is why you ask where i've gone. i
just
did a mr. coffee commercial, i'm a spokesman for the bowery savings bank and
i
haven't gone anywhere.''

i said that i didn't mean the lines literally, that i thought of him as an
american hero and that genuine heroes were in short supply. he accepted the
explanation and thanked me. we shook hands and said good night.

now, in the shadow of his passing, i find myself wondering about that
explanation. yes, he was a cultural icon, a hero if you will, but not of my
generation. he belonged to my father's youth: he was a world war ii guy
whose
career began in the days of babe ruth and lou gehrig and ended with the
arrival of the youthful mickey mantle (who was, in truth, my favorite
ballplayer).

in the 50's and 60's, it was fashionable to refer to baseball as a metaphor
for america, and dimaggio represented the values of that america: excellence
and fulfillment of duty (he often played in pain), combined with a grace
that
implied a purity of spirit, an off-the-field dignity and a jealously guarded
private life. it was said that he still grieved for his former wife, marilyn
monroe, and sent fresh flowers to her grave every week. yet as a man who
married one of america's most famous and famously neurotic women, he never
spoke of her in public or in print. he understood the power of silence.

he was the antithesis of the iconoclastic, mind-expanding, authority-
defying
60's, which is why i think he suspected a hidden meaning in my lyrics. the
fact that the lines were sincere and that they've been embraced over the
years
as a yearning for heroes and heroism speaks to the subconscious desires of
the
culture. we need heroes, and we search for candidates to be anointed.

why do we do this even as we know the attribution of heroic characteristics
is
almost always a distortion? deconstructed and scrutinized, the hero turns out
to be as petty and ego-driven as you and i. we know, but still we anoint. we
deify, though we know the deification often kills, as in the cases of elvis
presley, princess diana and john lennon. even when the recipient's life is
spared, the fame and idolatry poison and injure. there is no doubt in my
mind
that dimaggio suffered for being dimaggio.

we inflict this damage without malice because we are enthralled by myths,
stories and allegories. the son of italian immigrants, the father a
fisherman,
grows up poor in san francisco and becomes the greatest baseball player of
his
day, marries an american goddess and never in word or deed befouls his
legend
and greatness. he is ''the yankee clipper,'' as proud and masculine as a
battleship.

when the hero becomes larger than life, life itself is magnified, and we
read
with a new clarity our moral compass. the hero allows us to measure
ourselves
on the goodness scale: o.k., i'm not mother teresa, but hey, i'm no jeffrey
dahmer. better keep trying in the eyes of god.

what is the larger significance of dimaggio's death? is he a real hero? let
me
quote the complete verse from ''mrs. robinson'':

sitting on a sofa on a sunday afternoon

going to the candidates' debate

laugh about it, shout about it

when you've got to choose

every way you look at it you lose.

where have you gone, joe dimaggio?

a nation turns its lonely eyes to you

what's that you say mrs. robinson

joltin' joe has left and gone away.

in these days of presidential transgressions and apologies and prime- time
interviews about private sexual matters, we grieve for joe dimaggio and
mourn
the loss of his grace and dignity, his fierce sense of privacy, his fidelity
to the memory of his wife and the power of his silence.

is this some sort of perverted delayed april fool's joke? it sounds

atlanta...emily and vonda...chris reeve (who i have only seen in atlanta...)
sounds like a great opportunity.

the scary thing is that this is looking entirely do-able. luckily i have ani
tixs for portland (and *i* adore the venue) or else my plastic (or my tax
return) would be getting some frequent flier miles. lucky i
have...restraint.

yeah. or something...

hey everyone..

just got in from the mm show in philadelphia..

michelle was her professional excellent self.. worked real hard to involve
everyone in the show. it's hard to expain but, on her home turf (atlanta,
eddie's attic) the crowd tends to really light up. up here, people seemed to
be a little detached.

as always, michelle kicked a@@ and by the end, everyone demanded "one more
song."

total length just under 74 mins. i'll have a set list for anyone interested.

later all!

tool's keenan depicts charles manson in popsmear

also on board: wayne kramer, martyn lenoble, jerry
stahl

tool frontman maynard james keenan, wayne kramer,
ex-new york dolls bassist arthur kane, ex-porno for
pyros bassist martyn lenoble, and permanent midnight
writer jerry stahl are among the cast of characters
to portray the people in the horrid sharon tate
murders by charles manson and co. in a fumetti for
the always controversial popsmear magazine.

the 15-page these children that come at you with
knives, which was written and directed by noted
author legs mcneil (please kill me) and co-written
by gillian mccain, will appear in the may/june issue
of the magazine, due on stands may 10. a fumetti is
a comic-book style layout with still black- and-
white photographs accompanying drawings and a script
to tell the story. these children... follows in the
footsteps of punk magazine's fumettis mutant monster
beach party and legend of nick detroit.

the cast of characters for the manson/tate tale
includes: maynard james keenan as charles manson;
kembra pfaller of the voluptuous horror of karen
black as sharon tate; shawn pierce of the toilet
boys as tex watson; sid & nancy's chloe webb as
patricia krenwinkle; "handsome" dick manitoba of the
dictators as voytek frykowski; jerry stahl as jay
sebring; wayne kramer as leno labianca; and martyn
lenoble as gary hinman.

also in the piece are popsmear publisher james morel,
streetwalkin' cheetahs/popsmear's frank meyer, dead
boys' jimmy zero, adolescents' tony reflex, adz's
bruce duff, angry samoans' jeff dahl, porno stars
sharon mitchell and veronica hart, the stiff ones'
texas terri, and others.

indigo girls get a little help from their friends

the indigo girls have tapped middle eastern-
influenced singer natacha atlas of transglobal
underground and jah wobble fame to help on backing
vocals on a tune from the duo's upcoming follow-up
to 1997's shaming of the sun.

atlas helped out on a track entitled "faye tucker"
during a recent recording session in london. the duo
recorded five songs across the pond with john
reynolds, claire kenny, carol isaacs, and caroline
dale -- all on loan from sinead o'connor's band
(allstar, jan. 8).

also, during a recent pre-production session at
drummer jerry marotta's home studio in woodstock,
n.y. in late february, luscious jackson drummer kate
schellenbach and ex-breeder josephine wiggs
contributed on drums and bass, respectively, on a
track called "compromise."

other tracks recorded for possible inclusion on the
album include "go," "sister," "soon to be nothing,"
"philosophy of loss," "ozilene," and "gone again."

the girls will hit an atlanta studio next week to
begin the final recording process with producer
malcolm burns (midnight oil, patti smith, sinead
lohan), who will also handle the mixing. epic
records expects the album, the girls' sixth overall,
sometime this fall.

houston, tina turner, cher, and brandy, and special

espn x games tour kicks off april 10

compilation cd due june 15

simon says, a band already set to launch a national
tour of high school gymnasiums and auditoriums on
april 15 (they're not too far removed from high
school themselves), will be headlining the fourth
annual espn x games xperience tour along the way,
starting saturday (april 10) in charlotte, n.c. the
sacramento, calif. band, whose debut jump start is
out april 20 on hollywood records, is the only band
to appear at all 10 of the tour's stops.

the ernies and seattle rockers second coming -- who
just finished a video for "vintage eyes" with
director len wiseman -- also join the bill on
several dates, while continuing their own separate
tours. the ernies, gearing up for the april 20
release of their mojo debut meson ray, have also
snagged two dates with labelmates reel big fish,
opening shows at the exit inn in nashville, tenn. on
may 3 and at traxx in charlottesville, w. va.

other bands playing various dates on the tour, which
climaxes june 24-july 3 in san francisco with the
1999 x games, include trinket, atomic fireballs, and
neve. the free- admission x games xperience tour,
like the vans warped tour, combines extreme sports
with earsplitting rock. the x games tour, though,
will bring a weekend-long festival to each of its
stops rather than a single day event.

meanwhile, this year's x games compilation cd is
slated for a june 15 release on mammoth. confirmed
tracks for the album include the flys, "got you
where i want you"; less than jake, "history of a
boring town"; freestylers, "here we go"; styles of
beyond, "easy back it up"; mxpx, "rock and roll
girl"; fatboy slim, "gangster tripping"; and
gearwhore, "passion [harley mix]."

potentially worth millions. "they would have been much
more lucrative," wainwright tells allstar contributor
corey levitan, mentioning only calvin klein by name.
"but the thing i liked about the gap ad was that there
was no logo in it. to see me up there with this calvin
klein logo would have been a little weird for me." that
and the fact that klein, wainwright jokes, would
probably have requested partial nudity. "i'll probably
be undressing constantly toward the end of my career,
though," he says...

today's review:

buckcherry - buckcherry
(dreamworks)
allstar rating: 3

<a href="http://p0.com/r.d?ib0xzy4ce=musicblvd/cgi-bin/tw/6169_43_649776">http://www.musicblvd.com/cgi-bin/tw/6169_43_649776</a>

buckcherry has buzz aplenty to live up to. if you
believe the meaningless music-biz hype, this los
angeles quintet has arrived to spearhead metal's
second coming and save rock and roll. however, good
intentions are no guarantee of good music.
buckcherry's self-titled debut tries to capture the
slam-bang rock and raunch of bands like kiss, guns
n' roses, and the black crowes, but instead winds
up evoking skid row, jackyl, and motley crue. the
bland and vacuous album kicks off with the
cock-rocking "lit up," a song that features lead
singer joshua todd vamping "i love the cocaine" over
a riff copped straight from kiss' "shock me." as you
can imagine, things continue downhill from there,
despite the efforts of producers terry date
(soundgarden, pantera, white zombie) and steve jones
(sex pistols). rock definitely needs a well-placed
kick in the ass, but unfortunately, buckcherry fails
to deliver the blow.

is a hero someone who charges over a hundred bucks a seat after his last

$115 bucks a seat for the boston shows - that's a little steep considering
falcon ridge may be less than that for the complete weekend...

damn...i was considering that - but springsteen, for me, takes
priority.  at $100+ a show, that's insane - u2 played for 3.5 hours plus
opener, and it cost me a measly $60.  i doubt bob and paul are going to
have a giant flying lemon.
and art garfunkel tickets were, what, $15?  :)

hi all:

i just found this from the allstar daily news dated 4/8/99.  if it's already
been posted sorry for the repeat.

indigo girls get a little help from their friends

the indigo girls have tapped middle eastern-
influenced singer natacha atlas of transglobal
underground and jah wobble fame to help on backing
vocals on a tune from the duo's upcoming follow-up
to 1997's shaming of the sun.

atlas helped out on a track entitled "faye tucker"
during a recent recording session in london. the duo
recorded five songs across the pond with john
reynolds, claire kenny, carol isaacs, and caroline
dale -- all on loan from sinead o'connor's band
(allstar, jan. 8).

also, during a recent pre-production session at
drummer jerry marotta's home studio in woodstock,
n.y. in late february, luscious jackson drummer kate
schellenbach and ex-breeder josephine wiggs
contributed on drums and bass, respectively, on a
track called "compromise."

other tracks recorded for possible inclusion on the
album include "go," "sister," "soon to be nothing,"
"philosophy of loss," "ozilene," and "gone again."

the girls will hit an atlanta studio next week to
begin the final recording process with producer
malcolm burns (midnight oil, patti smith, sinead
lohan), who will also handle the mixing. epic
records expects the album, the girls' sixth overall,
sometime this fall.

(apologies for da bandwidth, but what are ya gonna do?)

hey...

further to my pretty successful (sp? it's been a long day...) blue food
project, here's what i have planned...

and now is a good time to say that if anyone is waiting for a trade or a cd
from me and hasn't heard anything in a while, it would be wise to email me
'cause i got so many cds burnt and trades sorted i kinda got lost.

and now probably wouldn't be a good time to ask if anyone has thought of the
wood song (as discussed a week or three back) as an ode to an ageing porn
actor? so i won't.

anyway.

i've just finished the audio side of a 3cd set of igs rarities. (i have to
work on the artwork still). and i need peeps who have cd burning capability
to volunteer to tree this - last time i only had a couple of offers (so it
wasn't really worth treeing) but i need at least six to make this possible
(there's no way i can do 3 cds for the same amount of people who wanted blue
food on my own...) many hands make light work and all. and hopefully the mp3
offer will have prempted this so there's less demand!

so here's what i got so far. let me know if you can help, or indeed, if i've
made any glaring errors/omissions:

thankee

neil :o)

attack of the killer b sides (or some similarly unwitty title)

a mostly complete, pretty much chronological collection of official indigo
girls' rarities 1989-1998 plus! all taken from original cds/vinyl (except
for the coffee promo tracks) and lovingly compiled into three cds purely for
convenience. initially found on promo releases, b-sides and various artist
projects. these compilations are not intended to replace the originals. it
is strongly recommended you search out the original albums as they're all
mighty fine (and some were put together for charity, mate!)
notable exceptions: the shed your skin remix 12" and various radio show
collections (i.e. world cafe). maybe next time. also full length promos
(reverse-1, shades...) 'cause they're stand-alone releases.

i must agree wholeheartedly to your comments where heroes are
concerned.  but isn't it a bit pretentious to question his motives for
whatever he's doing?  or has he enlightened you and not told me?
madison square garden ain't a cheap place to rent for a night.  and to
truck massive sound systems across the country, and provide the manpower
to make sure it all goes right...as well as all the backup musicians
needed.  (simon plays with more people than live in the entire state of
colorado, and he's touring with dylan)
the man's not exactly going multiplatinum these days, and that's what
you need to break even with major labels - i don't see many t-shirt sales
either - how does a musician make a living?  oh, i see...touring!
perhaps those ticket prices are due to the fact that they probably
won't have corporate sponsorship to help foot the bill.  pay $115 to see
simon/dylan on their own terms, or maybe a lesser $75 to see eric clapton,
brought to you by lexus and budweiser?  or $35 to see the indigo girls,
coming at you from lilith fair, the official concert of biore, ben &
jerry's, barnes & noble, etc.?
you see, these things can be twisted all sorts of ways.  i would hate
for anybody as bright as you to go rushing to judgement.

> is this the same paul simon who wrote "the music suffers; the music business
> thrives....."???

yes, it was.  but his music business ain't been all that hot lately.
and if you can name an artist who's put out a consistent stream of
brilliant albums for 35 years, embraced as many musical styles as paul
has, whose mastery of the art of both songwriting and music itself is more
complete, then i'll show you a god.
maybe paul simon's not a saint.  i don't care to know about his
personal life.  but i know one thing - he's 'bout the damn finest
musician i've ever heard.

hey kind friends,
well i just saw michelle malone!  she was so so so so incredibly
awesome.  before tonight i had never heard her at all and she completely
suprised me.  most of the time when its just someone with their guitar after
the first few songs they just get boring but she was great.  it was really
cool cuz there were like 40 people at the most in the room and she was
talking to everyone and stuff.  the best part was at the end when she first
left the stage and everyone was clapping and stuff and she wouldn't come
back.  so finally she came back and was like ya'll its over your supposed to
leave but it was so cool.  she got her guitar and sat down on the front of
the stage and sang two more songs completely acoustic  i was just completely
blown away oh and after she was like ok i guess i'll have to show you all the
way out and then i got her autograph and she was just really nice and cool.
so i'll shut up now.

hi. i've bought beneath the devil's moon from a used cd store. the song
medicated madelane starts with "i'm so very lonely..." instead of "i'm so
fxxxing lonely...". both in her webpage and in her concert use the f-word. is
my cd a different than others?

thanks

actually, i was just tilling the soil a bit......trying to provoke a
thoughtful exchange of ideas among the fertile minds that reside in these
parts......

in truth, i am a great admirer the musical contributions of dylan and paul
simon as well, although i would not consider either to be a "hero" of
mine......i particularly admired simon's work with the african musicians
during the graceland period.......

my greatest admiration goes to those who strive to make the world a better

thanks for your enlightening response....

i've been thinking about this the past few days, so please excuse me if this all seems a bit random.

over the last few months, and especially since i came out, i feel like i've been trying to define my sexual direction, and i feel like it's been easier to call myself gay. however, this somehow feels wrong - if i was attracted to a woman, i felt bad about it, and bad about myself (never a good thing...)

anyway, what this all leads to is that i feel safer seeing myself as bisexual, or just as someone who, if they find someone attractive, will be able to have that feeling without thinking that's its wrong in some way.

anyway, sorry if i was a bit random....

john.

i definitely agree witht the sentiment- i've been thinking about this
as well. :) i hate being categorized as something, anything.  once
someone puts a label on me or on something, it automatically restricts
you to a certain place, a certain category. so i say i am open to
anybody.  whoever i fall for, i will go for.  now that might be a
woman every time, but i don't want to restrict it to just that.  i
guess its kind of the chasing amy defense, i don't know.  :)

i just wanted to announce that michelle malone *and* wendy bucklew will be
playing in baltimore on april 25, at goucher college. the tickets are going
on sale tomorrow (sunday). they are $10 for non-goucher students. you can
reserve tickets by phone or e-mail and pay the night of the show - call
(410) 769 - 6470 and leave name, phone number and # of tickets, or leave the
same info in an e-mail to me. i don't know if anybody on this list remembers
how hard i tried to get michelle to play last year, and how it didn't work
out, so i am *very* excited about this show. she played at johns hopkins
last night and was *awesome*.

oh everyone who can go to the show should go go go!!!

i flew from wa. state to northern california to see them at the winters
opera house.  worth every penny.  (well, i was visiting family and
friends too...)  michelle was just great.  i can't remember all of the
songs she played, but i asked her to play "california" and she did.  also
"butter biscuit."  wendy did some new stuff and a lot of songs off of her
latest album.  like i said, go!

wow.....

thanks to everybody who sent replies, i guess this is a major part of what the list does for me, and hopefully everybody ---- provides emotional support at the times that you need it....

i guess the one statement that can be made at the end of this is simple....

regardless of gay, lesbian or straight --- i'm me, and that's it.

thank you,

john.

my 2 cents:
i recently took several of my good friends to a gay club i frequent here
in dallas, and was introducing my female friend to my bartending pal, who
asked her, "gay, straight, or bisexual?", and when she started to find it
hard to answer definately, he said, "or are you just sexual?".  that made
sense for her -- finding beauty and desire for all kinds of people, male
and female, and she's had a lot easier time "labeling" herself to others
this way.  who said you have to choose right away?  la vita e' bella, mi
amici!

just thought i'd share

hello, i have no problem with you on the list, so what if you are not
the most liked, the best organized (or fastest) tape trader, you *certainly
have* every right to be on the list. i think you bring some great
enthuasium, didn't you start some literature lists?

    and i feel isolated
whoa - no reason to disconnect fron\m some 700 plus people - most of
whom are incredibly kind in heart.  too bad it seems negaitive feelings
still prevail on this list.
i thought i would make everyone happy by dropping my name from the list.
not true - you're just letting peoplewho dislike you tell you what to
do...you haven't done anything like kill someone - or commit some
unspeakable felony

i know when i am not wanted and i guess my stay was to long.

it's pretty you feel that way - hopefully you'll reconsider...

i agree with mike, and more importantly, this is not the first time in recent
months i've heard of someone being bullied by a childish handful who have
been launching private email campaigns to rid the list of those they don't
like.  grow up you guys.  what you're doing has a name, it's called
"harassment".  besides being illegal in this country, it just plain it sucks.

oy vay!  all this melodrama and self pity has me in the mood for a new thread.

i have always thought about what life would be like without indigo girls--a
thought that is not pleasant of course.  but obviously, the girls will not
be together forever.  do people have thoughts on the longevity of ig's
careers?  i would be interested to see some future predicting on where the
girls are headed in their musical future.  i wonder how much longer they
will be together.  will they still be touring and cranking out new albums
in their fifties ala the rolling stones.  it would be great but i wonder if
they will make it for that long together.  i know there is an infamous
quote where emily says she worries about when it will end and amy says she
worries about emily worrying about it ending or something like that.   has
there been other insight into when ig will hang it up?  and when should an
artist hang it up--at the top of their game?  all fair discussion
questions, no?  i know ig breaking up may be a taboo topic but i think it
can be discussed rationally.

ok there's your topic....discuss

hey, some of you mentioned that you already heard sonia do dusty's 'just
don't know what to do with myself"  well, i saw the tribute album was
recently written up in billboard magazine with sonia and gretchen phillips
pictured and quoted.  you go girls!  sounds like it is due for release in
late june of this year.   here's the article--of course, reprinted w/o
permission.
erica

bpi entertainment news wire
march 15, 1999, monday

r&d plans dusty tribute
springfield homage includes indigo girls, others
by larry flick, billboard

the durham, n.c.-rooted indie r&d records will be among the first
labels to issue a tribute to dusty springfield, who died march 3 after a
lengthy battle with breast cancer.
the album, "forever dusty: an homage to an icon," is tentatively
slated for release june 22. it will boast an array of grass-roots rock and
acoustic-pop artists, including indigo girls, laura love, michelle malone,
gretchen phillips, kate pierson of the b-52's, marti jones, the butchies,
and sonia of disappear fear, among others.
"going this route seemed far more interesting than jumping on the more
predictable pop-diva bandwagon," says rebekah radisch, executive producer
of the project and r&d president. "of course, i would be thrilled if
madonna called and asked to participate. but that's as far as i'm willing
to go."
she adds that the acts invited to participate capture the "ultimate
essence of dusty--a woman who was fearless both in her music and in her
willingness to speak out on issues of politics and sexuality. in so many
ways, she was a grass-roots activist, not a mainstream pawn."
in keeping with her left-of-center creative approach to "forever
dusty," radisch is not pursuing major distribution for the project. despite
several recent offers, she is opting to issue the set on a smaller scale,
in an effort to "keep the returns to a minimum." she adds that her
intention to donate a portion of the profits to several breast cancer
organizations around the u.s. adds to her desire to "maintain a tight rein"
on the flow of product into the marketplace.
"i don't want anything falling through giant corporate cracks," she says.
a distributor is yet to be confirmed, and there are no plans to issue
the project outside the u.s.
radisch says she started conceptualizing the project roughly two years
ago. artists started laying down tracks last year.
so far, malone has cut "the look of love," and phillips has recorded
"yesterday when i was young." love will contribute her rendition of
"son-of-a preacher man."
"initially, it was a little intimidating in the studio," phillips
says. "to pay homage without falling short from the beautiful, effortless
way she had of singing was nerve-racking. in the end, i took her honesty as
a source of inspiration."
for sonia of disappear fear, who covers "i just don't know what to do
with myself," participating in the project served as an introduction to
springfield's music.
"ironically, dusty is just being born for me," she says. "her music
has been a revelation for me. it's like my life and my music have been
forever changed by this experience."
in addition to "forever dusty," springfield will be feted by the
mercury/ chronicles' march 23 release of remastered classic recordings:
"stay awhile/i only want to be with you" (1964), "dusty" (1964),
"ooooooweeee!" (1965), "you don't have to say you love me" (1966), and "the
look of love" (1967). a three-cd boxed set anthology titled "dusty
springfield" was released by the label in november 1997, and the
compilation "the very best of dusty springfield" came out in april 1998.
as for the international market, paul reidy, catalog product manager
for mercury u.k., says that those albums, which differed in some cases from
springfield's british releases, will not be reissued in her home country.
but a four-cd boxed set, which has long been in preparation, is likely to
be released "in september or october," both in the u.k. and
internationally. "we're planning it to be very lavish," says reidy, noting
that it will take a similar form to cream's "those were the days" set on
polydor.
describing the set as "everything you could possibly want on dusty,"
reidy says it will include her early material with the springfields, live
and unreleased items, and tracks from her later albums for parlophone,
columbia, and others. springfield's different u.s. label affiliations,
especially her association with atlantic, may mean that mercury will have
the set for the world excluding north america, he says. executive producer
of the project is mike gill, a longtime associate of the singer in the u.k.
mercury u.k. will also continue its reissue program of springfield's
original albums for philips, which has already seen the reactivation of
such sets as "everything comes up dusty," "where am i going," and "dusty in
memphis." reidy says that such albums as "dusty . . . definitely," from
1968, and 1970's "from dusty with love" are being considered for 2000.

hi everyone,

i may regret this... but what the heck, you only live once.

as we all know, janet doe has made ig mp3 files available to us. there =
is a heck of a lot of material up there and i posed the crazy idea to =
janet to have a cd tree. she's quite busy right now and doesn't have =
time to do it. i envision something like the classic boot tree. you know =
the drill, certain folks would act as branches, while most folks would =
be leaves. branches would make cds for the leaves.

if i could get enough volunteers to download files off janet's server, =
send these files to me via snail-mail, i'll burn copies for ya'll. as of =
4/11/99, there are 17 directories. if each person takes a directory, we =
could finish fairly quickly.  i could reasonably burn 10-15 cds in an =
afternoon.

here's the rub, i only have a zip drive (no jazz, etc.) to copy from. so =
the gist is, you would download files, copy these files to a zip disk, =
and mail them to me. i make cds for the branches (and probably the folks =
who download).

i'd also like to hear from individuals who could act as branches.

let me know what y'all think! oh, btw, i'm on digest and usually only =
read mail once per day. (optimistically!)

i can't picture it......and i don't wanna picture it......i honestly don't
see why the girls can't continue to grow as writers and performers well into
the new millenium......

as writers, i've often drawn a parallel in my thoughts between amy and emily
and lennon and mccartney.......without the infighting........i think the
fact that each of them has other interests outside the musical parnership
bodes well......as does the fact that the girls are subjected to
considerably less media attention than that which was lavished on the lads
from liverpool......

adding another thread for discussion:  it seems that every media article i
see lately refers to the "openly gay indigo girls" or the "lesbian duo" or
some such categorization......while i understand the need for good role
models, it seems to me that such labels have a polarizing effect......

any thoughts????

peace......
tim

did you ever notice that the nation that screams loudest about world peace
is always the first to bomb those with whom it disagrees???  perhaps we need
a slogan:  bombs don't kill people....people kill people.......my heart
grieves for the innocents........

hi lori and all ig folk,

i like your idea, and have all the files downloaded on twelve 100 mb
diskettes. let me know if you still need them or have already been inundated
with volunteers.

it even looks like i can buy a cd-r drive for my computer by the end of this
month. my question for the list is this:

1. what cd-r to buy?
2. i am a social worker so this computer stuff is the wrong side of the brain
for this piscean soul.....is it possible to record directly from a zip disk
to a cd-r? how complex is the process for the non-technically blessed?
3. do i buy a cd-r or cd-rw?
4. any brands to avoid?

thanks to all who have so kindly shared great music (janet doe, scott
niebling, jude hunter, karen asiu) i look forward to soon being able to pass
on their kindness.

<<i'd also like to hear from individuals who could act as branches.>>

yessss, but after i get my cd-r drive (early may)

btw, semi-ig related i started folk guitar lessons this saturday.
as i stumble through those first a,e, d chords i have even more respect for
those of you who make it look soooo easy.

cheers,
katherine

good thread.  imho, ig aren't at all like the stones, or really anyone else.
they didn't have a ballistic ride to the top of anything, and that's not why
they are there.  the way they travel the world and constantly explore human
issues to feed their creativity, as well as seeking other musicians to keep
their music fertile (how's that for organic metaphor) i don't see them
falling apart.  in a lot of ways, sots was two separate albums (do we still
say "albums"?).  they've said as much in an interview i read (don't ask me
where).  this tells me that they can write songs together and they can write
individually then sing them together, and they can write songs and sing solo.
how many permutations is that?  they might get physically tired at some
point and have to cut back on the house-building and berlin-wall-hammering
activities,  like in their fifties or something, but i just don't see them
splitting up for good.  they don't live together, except maybe on tour, so
they have their own private lives...   i hope i'm not deluding myself.  i
can't wait for the next release!
and i've been meaning to comment on the mp3 - things.  i'm a hopeless
computer idiot and i just kind of nod off at the sight of numbers, but
fortunately clare, the lesband, (had to sneak that in) likes numbers.  and
she likes me and she likes a lot of songs i've never heard (because i grew up
in the middle of a wheatfield).  well, downloading these things has been
great.  i get to hear my beloved girls covering old songs, then of course, i
ask clare about the originals which makes her happy.  it's the opportunity to
hear all this early stuff that will never be on the market that is really
cool to me.  so, thanks, to whoever does this little bit of magic.
freida.

my understanding is that cd-rw drives can also write to cd-r media but not
vice versa. on the downside, my understanding is that cd-rw discs won't work
in standard audio players. if you intend to use the drive for back-ups or
offline storage, you might want to go with a rw drive so you can reused
discs. if you just want it for music and archival purposes, then cd-r might
be the way to go.

hi,  i don't think it's an accident that the most
interesting thread in about 6 months is being proposed
by greg.  nice to hear from you again, guy.  i'm sure
you don't know who i am, but i've been lurking and
very occasionally participating at various addresses
for some three plus years.  i think this is a great
subject that's actually appropriate content for the
list.

i agree that the word "split up" may not be
appropriate for the girls.  every year they garner
more and more attention from so many diverse audiences
and so many talented colleagues, that their individual
music grows.  they may have longer periods of time
between albums that they create together, but they
should still be accessible to us in one form or
another, either seperately or apart for many years to
come.  they use their "fame" as a group (and as
seperate individuals) to better the world, and that's
why this formula will assure that we'll be hearing
from them more or less constantly.  they are quite
well aware of their ability to get together and effect
real change, in addition to which i think they really
genuinely like working with each other.  so between
albums they'll get better and better.

happy birthday amy!!  it's appropriate that i should have an indigo moment
on this day.

we have one of those page a day calendars in our house focusing on
gardening.  the quote from today's page begins, "there's something 'bout
the southland in the springtime," sang the indigo girls.  coincidentally,
the picture was from middleton gardens near charleston, sc.  i was just
there about a month ago.

this whole longevity tangent has me thinking...

if the ig's broke up today, i would not jump out a window.  i would
not uproot trees and set them on fire.  i would not (well at least i
hope i wouldn't) do anything horribly silly and reactionary.  the
indigo girls have given us ten plus years of wonderful music to listen
to...if they decided to go their separate ways, i would still have
that music, and the memories related.  and in the words of amy,
"better this/can't last forever"...things happen and evolve and
change.  somehow i doubt, though, that the girls would ever abandon
music completely--as someone else pointed out, they aren't the rolling
stones.  they make music (at least apparently) outside of the
overblown rock-and-roll-ego-and-infighting trappings.  and for
whatever success they have had, they are still people, instead of
"mythic-rock-goddesses" (though some of us, myself included, tend to
sometimes think otherwise).  i think that their music is still rooted
in a sense of the small and grassroots--look at the suffragette
sessions, or honor the earth, or daemon records, or some of the other
tours/causes/endeavors they've involved themselves with.  i think
there's a lot more staying power in that than, say, in a massively
produced and promoted "rock & roll product".  its organic.  their
music has changed and evolved over the course of their career, and i
think that there is a lot of room, that they've allowed a lot of room,
for it to continue to evolve in divergent--or similar--paths.  i could
see the girls recording solo albums as a side project (hey, maybe we'd
get that amy punk album or that emily jazz & soul album that some of
us have always wanted)...or maybe those different strands will
continue to be intertwined, overlapped, woven in and out of each other
on future albums together.

in any case, i'm eternally grateful for the music they've shared with
us so far.

on a different tangent, gotta plug a couple of local happenings this
week.  rose polenzani is playing no exit thursday ($6...check her
website for the time), and the cubby bear (generally a scary frat-ty
type place, but this looks like a good cause) is having a breast
cancer benefit on saturday--the cathy richardson band will be
headlining, with a dozen or so local women-headed bands also on the
bill.  i think tix are $20.

take care all,
shelley

this is not exactly a novel idea, but has anyone downloaded mp3s and
combined them into a zip file?  i was just thinking that distributing
files that way would probably be easier and take up much less space.
programs to unzip files are free on the internet, and that would
theoretically allow you to download and/or play an entire boot at once.
does that make sense?

so... has anyone done this?  let me know... i'd be interested in helping
set up a means of distributing such files.

it's exactly why emily didn't want to come out (from what i've read in interviews).

i'm not a knee-jerk label-basher.  labels are useful tools when used properly.  but there really isn't any point in declaring their sexuality in such articles... they've been at least as active in the realm of, say, native american rights, or the zapitistas, as in gay rights if the author wants to highlight their politics.

yeah, i've thought about this.  tellingly, ig are the only artists whose longevity i've actually considered.  my thoughts always end up in the same place:  even if they quit today, they will have given me a lifetime of wonderful, diverse music which i can enjoy for the rest of *my* days!

as long as the files are the proper wav files for recording onto an audio cd, i don't see why not.  there is software for decoding mp3 to wav, and software to do the reverse... there is software for manipulating sound files (noise reduction, amplification, editing, anything else you can think of)... there is software for recording from cd to wav, frm cd to cd-r, from disk to cd-r (audio), from disk to cd-r (data)...  i'd start with this adaptec software <http://www.adaptec.com/products/overview/ecdc.html>, then acquire the other tools you want later.  if you take this advice, you should buy a player that's supported by the software <http://www.adaptec.com/cgi-bin/cdrmain.cgi>.  these compatibility issues can be a big headache when you're getting up and running.

>how complex is the process for the non-technically blessed?

i've been challenged, and i've been working with computers longer than some of our list members have been alive. :-)  i've relied a lot on the support of the adaptec mailing lists.

        http://www.adaptec.com/support/cdrlist/index.html

you might subscribe for a bit and see how many times your head spins around before buying. :-)

>3. do i buy a cd-r or cd-rw?

i don't know what the price differences look like these days, but i bet amy and emily would appreciate the environmental friendliness of a cd-rw!  it's nice to be able to burn a test cd first to make sure it sounds like you expect (you may have to listen on your computer, though, many cd players won't play cd-rws).  the only difference is that a cd-r can only write to cd-r discs, which can only be written to once, whereas a cd-rw can also write to cd-rw discs, which are more expensive but can be reused over and over (good for backups, for moving large files between systems, that sort of thing).

mp3s are already very compressed, you won't get much benefit from zipping them.

sounds to me, right there, like the best reason to get a cd-r instead of
a cd-rw is for exactly the kind of purpose most of those on this mailing
list would get one -- so you can make audio cds that you can play in
your home stereo or car or whatever.  if i were doing huge amounts of
data backup or something, i'd jump on the rewriteable technology in a
heartbeat.  but i have my zipdrive for that.  recordable cds offer the
prospect of making "assortment tapes" for myself, something i do all the
time, only in a format that won't fade over time.  (yes, i know about
the expected life of a cd-r -- it's still more than tape.)

i want to correct a possible misunderstanding: a cd-rw drive can make perfectly good
cdr's. a cdr drive, on the other hand, cannot make cd-rws. i know you think you will be
using the drive only for audio cds, but believe me, they are a great way to backup your
data--you know, what we're all supposed to do but mostly don't. go for the cdrw if you
can, you gain the ability to buy what amount to removable, portable (though slow) hard
drives for $5-10.00 each. without the ability to erase old disks, the backups could get
pretty expensive!

'nuff on that topic for me,

tony

well, i didnt see any posters yet, so ill throw in a bit.  let me start off
by say, what a beautiful event, ya'll.  it was amazing... the passion was
overwhelming, especially from steve earle and jackson browne, both of whom
ill be buying cd's from shortly... for the indigo girls, they seems thrilled
to be there.. huge smiles on their faces all night... here's the review:
they played for about 30 minutes... opened with shame on you
-steve earle added a beautiful harmonica to it!  oh, and emily changed the
solo... a new banjo solo.. sounding sharper and sharper!
-after that song, a lady raised up her baby child to place 6 roses on the
stage.. very cute.. i am thinking it was one of her (amy's) family memebers
2nd song, something about "the only thing that sooths my soul... cold beer
and remote control"
-this was one i had never heard.. again, very beautiful!
-after it, amy's family sang her happy birthday :) oh, and amy got a new
puppy for her bday... named it "chula!"
-then, sufferagette song
-4th, some song about "have a good time...  make peace?"  both this one and
#2 were emily songs i believe
-5th, gone again :)  what can i say?
oh, and amy kinda messed up on the whistling.. but they were jsut laughing
away.
-6th, faye tucker....
7th, closer to fine with natile baine? (dixie chick) and terry clark

ok... that's it for now!  off to class....

i wish i could have been there!  my two favorites playing - jackson and
ig!

> overwhelming, especially from steve earle and jackson browne, both of >whom ill be buying cd's from shortly...

i don't know anything by steve earle, but jackson browe is a favorite.
i have all his cds - some are much better than the others, although many
will argue it is a mattter of opinion.  my favorite is "late for the
sky" - my least favorites are "lawyers in love and hold on, hold out".
all the others are phenomenal.  if you want a "greatest hits type cd,
get "the next voice you hear" for a sampling of music from most of his
albums.

hey y'all.  here's a strange, unusual, and probably just plain silly
question.  does anybody out there know of any way, that doesn't cost money,
to track down a person if you have no idea whatsoever where they might be.  i
haven't seen my biological father...ever.  i'm 23, and i want to know where
he is, if he's even still alive, and whether or not i have any brothers or
sisters.  i've never even spoken to the man, and i don't even know if he
wants any contact whatsoever, but i just have this urge to try to find
him...who knows, i might be the heiress to a small fortune.  anyway, if
anybody has any ideas, feel free to email me privately.

exactly... with a cd-rw device, you can make a cd-rw to see what your audio
cd will sound like, verify your edits, transitions and such, and then
record a cd-r.  kinda like the difference between typing your dissertation
in a word processor and on a typewriter.  :-)

i am not disagreeing with you at all deb, but i thought that you couldn't
burn an audio cdrw disc because it didn't meet some sort of red book
standards, of course, i haven't tried, and after hearing your wonderful nff
remastering (which made my ani show sound like it was taped from a car in
the parking lot, windows rooled up and clothes piled atop the mic in
comparison) i am not doubting - just a bit confused as i know i read cdrw
was not audio compadible.

either way you decide to go, write or rewrite, buy a scsi if you can afford
it. scsis are usually more expensive but faster.

i've had an ide (rewrite) and ruined many cds because of buffer underruns.
i've since returned the ide rewriter and purchased a scsi writer. i do data
backups on zip disks.

scsi means faster, more reliable, and it makes fewer demands on your
processor. when i used my ide, the computer had to sit there
*single-tasking* or the burn would fail. i can run programs while i'm doing
a burn now with no problems.

i also purchased a scsi ultraplex cd (reader) when i purchased my burner. i
had come home for lunch and installed both cds. i expected a fight with my
computer to make it recognize them... but both came up immediately with no
driver installation. it was the easiest install i've ever done. in fact, the
only problem with the chain happened when one of my new cds had a id
conflict with one of the burners - easy to take care of i changed the id on
my zip.

my total cost on both cds ended up being something like $310 - and no
coasters!

i've burned 'em!  i can't get them to play in any of my non-pc players, but i've burned 'em.  some cd and cd-rom players will play them, though:

check these out (after you paste 'em back together!):

hmmm, i don't consider that one of my best any more, but know i thought it was pretty good at the time.  if i knew then what i know now... so much remastering to do, so little time!  i still have a dozen shows (not ig, don't write me!) sitting on mds waiting to be mastered.

lol!  honestly, that's probably got more to do with my md recorder than my mastering skills, which were still pretty rudimentary when i cleaned up that recording.

this was announced a while back...amy did an interview with rockrgrl magazine
for their march/april 1999 issue about female-owned independant labels.  i was
able to find a copy easily in a local chain bookstore but if you haven't been
able to find a copy near you, and would like to read the interview, which is all
about daemon and its artists, email me and i'll send you a transcription of it.
it's fairly lengthy, so i wouldn't want to clutter up inboxes unless you *want*
me to clutter them.

of course this should by no means substitute going out and actually purchasing
the magazine.  support the publication.  you'll get to check out the 2 funny
little photos of amy in the daemon office.  there are also additional interviews
with fisherwoman suffragette jane siberry about her sheeba records, as well as a
cover story/interview with ani difranco talking about righteous babe records.

i just wanted to thank everyone who has responded to my post about looking
for my father.  i have received a ton of responses with various ideas,
including someone who is willing to try and find him for me just out of the
kindness of their heart, and another person who was willing to spot me the
money to have a group called 1800us search look for him.  you people rock!
the outpouring of support is truly overwhelming.  gives intimate strangers a
whole new meaning. :)

thank you all so much!

reprinted without permission from the tennessean:

benefit concert starts drive against death penalty

by jay orr / tennessean staff writer

music seldom has to carry such a grim and heavy weight as it did monday
night in the concert kicking off journey of hope: from violence to
reconciliation, a statewide initiative in opposition to the death penalty.

"sometimes, we need music to take us into parts of our hearts we don't even
know we have," said sister helen prejean, introduced by host steve earle as
"the spiritual leader of the death penalty abolition movement in this
country."

prejean credited the evening's performers, earle, the indigo girls, jackson
browne and emmylou harris, as "molders of the human spirit, firing us with
a new imagination."

earle himself wasted no time getting the real issue of the evening out
before the capacity crowd at the ryman auditorium, opening with ellis unit
one, a song he wrote from the perspective of a death row prison guard for
the soundtrack to the movie dead man walking.

"when you bought your ticket tonight, you became activists against the
death penalty in tennessee," earle told the ryman audience. he closed his
performance with a new song, over yonder, in which a condemned prisoner
sees his death as a sad but certain freedom.

playing live for the first time in a while, amy ray and emily saliers, the
indigo girls, included some new material in their set.

among the new tunes they previewed were cold fear and remote control and a
slashing, angry song probing the moral questions surrounding the execution
last year in texas of karla faye tucker. earle joined them for shame on
you, playing harmonica on a song the artists recorded together.

the evening's emotional peak came when prejean, author of the book that
inspired dead man walking, gave an impassioned and frequently humorous
speech against the death penalty, calling for "a new day and a new spirit"
of reconciliation and forgiveness.

she ended by inviting family members of death row inmates and murder
victims to come to the stage and state their names and the name of their
loved one. when they had finished, a semi-circle of 13 stood on the stage
with prejean in a powerful display of the human side of the issue.

the evening also included moments of levity and affirmation. country music
favorites terri clark and natalie maines of the dixie chicks joined the
indigo girls for a performance of their set-closing favorite, closer to fine.

jackson browne tried in vain (and for too long) to wrestle a guitar into
tune, only to give in and play the piano instead on alive in the world, and
jimmie fadden of the nitty gritty dirt band joined him for world in motion.

all the performers seemed to take special care to match their repertoires
to the mood of the evening, but emmylou harris, assisted by buddy and julie
miller and bassist byron house, found special ways to add meaning to
favorites such as one of these days, love hurts, gillian welch's orphan
girl and ralph stanley's green pastures.

the three-hour concert ended with a group performance of the old leadbelly
tune, irene goodnight, a folk favorite with political activists for
generations.

sponsored by the tennessee coalition to abolish state killing, the concert
was billed as "the concert for healing and reconciliation."

the fund-raiser kicks off a two-week circuit of the state, with stops in
nashville, memphis, knoxville and chattanooga. a march and rally takes
place at 11:30 a.m. april 23 at war memorial plaza.
