actually, the chorus was actually:

"only two things can soothe my soul
cold beer and a remote control"

this song was definitely one of the highlights of the night, whatever the
title might actually be =).

howdy, folks!

in my sporadic yet never-ending quest to trumpet the extreme coolness of the
band caedmon's call, i humbly offer this suggestion:

get your rear to wherever you purchase recorded music and purchase "40
acres" by caedmon's call!

for those of you not "in the know", caedmon's call is a band from houston
that skillfully plays that indescribible blend of folk, rock and pop that
you know you love or you wouldn't be reading this.

oh, and another thing: they're a christian band.  but lest you turn up your
nose and dismiss them based on their spiritual leanings, be advised that
their brand of christianity is somewhat contrary to what you may perceive as
the current model.

their philosophy is not to shelter themselves in the christian folds.  they
just go out and play...wherever people will listen.  their message is not at
all heavy handed; it's a more intellectual, no bull approach.  and the
music's just nice, nice, nice...great acoustic guitars, banjo, vocal
harmonies, awesome jerry marotta-like creative percussion.

need more?  consider this:

1. the band's two lead singer/guitarists, cliff and derek, list indigo girls
as their favorite and most influential musicians. they even proclaimed this
on one of their cd-rom's. think it takes conviction to list (gasp) a lesbian
duo as your favorite musicians on a christian cd? probably. that's how they
are.

2. derek plays a lot of banjo on this record, which is like emily, and he
writes these awesome pour-my-heart out songs, like amy.

3. the last time i saw them in concert, i wore a swamp ophelia t-shirt, and
each member of the band loudly proclaimed from amidst the autograph lines
their affection for my shirt and the girls.  i felt cool.

4. they thank the indigo girls in the liner notes of 40 acres.

5. they cover "climb on (a back that's strong)" by shawn colvin on 40 acres.

okay, it may seem that i'm getting paid for this, as much as i've written.
i'm not.  i just think caedmon's call is such a swell group of people that
make such swell music...and the fact that they're presenting an image of
christians that i think is the image that *needs* to be presented makes me
quite an adoring fan.

so buy the cd.

or at least borrow someone's and listen to it.

love,
justin

okay, i know ms. dupre is a kick butt journalist (and i remember feelinging
*special* because she and i both covered a hte reservation show)

but folks...ms. dupre knows a little too much, and with the last round of
birthday's (did i mention my sister was born the same day as amy ray?) my
friend scully and i have come to an conclusion.
ms. dupre = amy ray.

here is the supporting data:
1. ms dupre was supposedly hanging with baigls @ nff, i never met her , well
i may have but do not know what she looks like....um..somewhast supporting.

2. her birthday is april 12.

3. she, like has seen them far too often, and can decifer lyrics no one else
has even heard more than once.

4. her birthday is april 12.

5. she alweays post the weirdest finds like the sys remix dance tape or
something she "just happened to get in atlanta"

6. her birthday is april 12.

7. do you ever hear ms. dupre (ray?) beg for tickets to shows that seem
impossible to go to, like when ig played kosovo last night? (ms dupre will
post that tomorrow, ms. dupre will say amy played blood and fire that one
and only show,  too, just check sonicnet...

8. you know the date

9. like it's a coincidence lilith '97 ended in fl and ms. dupre had to cover
it.

10. ...and the time and the year...

11. ms dupre writes like amy writes (and *i* should know, english degree in
hand 8^))

so the reasons above make it pretty obvisious, lisa dupre is either amy ray,
.....

or some long lost twin...

or i'm completely wrong, either way

"the truth is out there"

joking, obvisiously

i never cared much for this song until recently.  i'm listening to a boot
where amy introduces it as "a love song.  not unrequited, but about
commitment."  as a listened, i realized it's one of the most romantic songs
i've ever heard.  does anyone else get that feeling from the song?  to
refresh your memories, here are the lyrics:

you dug a well
you dug it deep
for every wife you buried
you planted a cedar tree
the best
the best you ever had

i stand where you stood
i stand for bad or good
and i am green and you are wood
the best
the best he ever had

i dig a well
i dig it deep
and for my only love
i plant a cedar tree
the best
the best we ever had

cedar tree has always been one of my favorites.  i've never thought of
it as a love song though.  i guess because i was listening to it
during a breakup.  that puts it in a new perspective for me now.  i
guess maybe i'm just a tree in someone's field now.  i'll have to
listen to it again. i fell in love with the ig with rop one summer and
that song especially hooked me with amy's haunting voice and lyrics.
i was in a shop in nyc and was stopped in my tracks when i heard this
song coming over the speakers.  my friends had to drag me out of the
store.  i'm glad that it caught your attention, sheryl.  i love it
when old songs grab you in a new way.

i know a lot of you are ani fans so i thought i might post a little
review of her show last night in burlington, vt.  the crowd was pretty
good; not too many screamers.  she was really funny and she kept
forgetting the words to her songs.  at one point she forgot the words to
"shy" and she was asking everyone in her band, but no one new so she
asked goatboy and he pointed to his back and she said "oh yeah.  back
(pointing to her back) in the city..."  later in the song she forgot the
words again and just launched into hatshapedhat.  it was great.  here is
the setlist...roughly (i didn't write it down during the show):

virtue
jukebox
tis of thee
know now then
not a pretty girl (electric)
32 flavors
shy/hatshapedhat
angry anymore
pulse
independence day
letter to a john
two little girls
the slant
anticipate
cradle and all
encore: little plastic castle (this was the only song everyone sang
along with.  i was so pleased)

she also played three new songs.  they were very good.  that's all i can
remember right now.  i hope everyone is having a good day.  i have to go
study for my finals now.  if anyone is going to the show in syracuse,
i'll see you there.

i don't want to be a wet blanket, but it's probably best not to
get your hopes up. emily lives in atlanta, and california is several hours
away by plane, which is a long way to travel to sing a few songs at
somebody else's concert.

just a little more input on the situation.  on some site there was a list of
concert dates for the girls including some lilith fair dates and it had that
emily was going to be performing on 4/17 in atlanta but it didn't say that
she would be performing on 4/18 in santa monica.

i am sitting here listening to the listee's tape and i just have to say
that in addition to hearing how talented the contributers are, it is just
really really great to be able to put voices and even guitar playing styles
to all the familliar names! thanks shelley!

here, here!  let the kid alone.  she's a perfect right to ask questions.
it's obvious as heck to anyone that she's a newbie.

midori, the answers to your questions are that 1) yes, they are both openly
acknowledged lesbians, and 2) nobody officially knows, because we don't
discuss their personal lives on this list.  it's considered bad form.  and
hon, if you have any more questions, feel free to email me privately.  i'd

hey kind friends

i don't think anyone mentioned this so her we go...

gillian anderson recently presented anne heche with a community role model
award at the la gay and lesbian center. during her speech she said that she
met anne and ellen at the lilith fair! no less! and that she noticed them
because they were "bumping and grinding along with us to the indigo girls"
!!!

on another note, i think there was someone on the list (wasn' it you jill?)
who recently wondered if gillian knew about her 'impact' on the lesbian
community... well she said she realized it at this lilith fair occasion.

her speech is very funny and sensitive about the gay condition. if anyone
wants to listen to it, it's in real audio on gaws  the url is
http://gaws.ao.net/wnm.html and there's also a transcript for anyone that
doesn't have real audio!

wow! amy likes gillian and gillian likes the girls! isn't that funny?

now i wouldn't want to begin an argument on the list about who's sexiest...

so... in the meantime...

peace to y'all

jeez people, that was a warm reception for midori... <rolling eyes>

as a japanese major myself i know how hard it is to go from japanese to
correct english.

i am just excited to know that someone in japan loves ig as much as i do!
now i at least know that i'll have an ally when i'm over there next year.

just read the post from karen "nigc and i don't care" and started singing it
to the tune of "jimmy crack corn".  ;-)

okay, i'm a dork.  anyway, i've seen the nields mentioned on the list and i
thought fans might be interested in hearing my little tale of seeing them in
concert for the first time last week.  i noticed an ad in my handy-dandy
local weekly entertainment-type newspaper that were playing "a felton house
concert".  i wondered, "where's felton house and why didn't i know there was
a concert hall in felton?"  anyway, it turned out the performance was for
about 35 people in a house in felton, ca (near santa cruz) - in their living
room.  these very cool people regularly offer up their living room to a
group of strangers, and it was neat watching a show in a very comfortable
overstuffed chair.  :-)  the nields had never played a "house concert"
before either and decided it was an experience they wouldn't mind repeating.

anyway, nerissa and katryna were really good (they're touring without the
daves right now), i'd never heard any of their music before and most enjoyed
the hush before the heartbreak and check it out.  oh, and their cover of a
sinead o'connor tune and a hilarious cover of an old dolly parton tune was
good, too!

there seems to be a running theme with ig and take back the night
celebrations.  tonight was the take back the night rally and march on my
campus, complete with 2 hours of open mic, and ig was well-represented!  if
any hsu womyn are out there...what a glorious event!

ok - i know you guys can be really nice to newbies on the list - back when i started, it felt nice that you were very accepting and nice to me.....

what happened to that?

sure, midori's english may be a little off, and she may not understand everything about the ig just yet, but none of us do, at least not to start off with......

hopefully, she doesn't feel like she's got to leave the list so soon after joining it, simply because of a few people making comments......

ok, done with my ranting now.......

john.

damn sure memorable.  this is from _creative loafing_.

***

best acoustic band/artist

readers' choice

tie: michelle malone and gerard mchugh

the girls and the boys split this one right down the middle, with the
honors shared evenly between two longtime fixtures of the scene.
although both of them also have reputations as electric rockers, their
quieter acoustic personas clearly struck a warmer chord in the hearts of
loafing readers. malone's an intense firebrand who can hold a room
spellbound with her arrestingly strong and beautiful voice, but mchugh's
strength is witty songwriting combined with lively stagecraft.

critics' choice

blake guthrie

most of the folkies posing as lonely goat-herds for their own 15 minutes
of fame would absolutely keel over dead in their artfully "distressed"
$600 slouch boots if the public actually learned what their real jobs
were. but, proving he's got bigger balls than all of them put together,
blake guthrie acknowledges the source of his own minimum-wage
subsistence with the mere title of his latest release, grillcook.
emerging not nearly often enough from the kitchen of the brick store
pub, the wide-eyed guthrie wields a guitar literally held together with
duct tape as he aims his knife-sharp wit at every aspect of the pop
culture around him, making hamburger out of sacred cows from the indigo
girls to the art-farts at starbucks with tunes such as "coffeehouses in
the u.s.a." ("the place is full of vegetarians who never go to malls/the
guy behind the counter has a tattoo on his balls").

you people are priceless.  when i first posted to this list i made a mistake
and did something against your 'rules' and i was reemded by several of you.
i don't think i got any apologies when i posted to let ya'll know how hurt i
was by your rudeness.  i am over 40 years old, have raised a family, have 2
degrees and a terrific career, and here i was getting scolded by a bunch of
college kids.  you addressed me as if i were some kind of an idiot. i was
going to unsubscribe at the time, but decided to just read the postings and
try not to post anything myself.  i have enjoyed reading many, i have
disagreed with many, yet i still don't post for fear of breaking one of the
rules.  the biggest impression that i have gotten from the people on this
list, is that the majority are self rightous snobs that really don't get
what "kind friend" even means.
that is my piece....

hey everyone,
i realize that many people on this list live in atlanta.  i am going there
with my school band, orchestra, and chorus april 29-may 2.  i'm heading down
there (from newport news, va) with my mom a day early to see relatives.  do
any of you have any suggestions of things to do, people or places to see
while i'm there?  of course like most people, i'd really like to see ig while
there, but i have no idea when/where they're playing.  do ya'll know if there
will be anyone playing during this time frame like gerard, michelle, or any
other more local musicians?  if anyone is interested, i can let you know our
itinerary and i could maybe get a chance to meet some of you wonderful ig
fans out there.  fyi, i'm with the menchville high school band.  and despite
my age, i do not consider myself a "teeny-bopper", whom many of you dislike.
i'd love to hear back from some of you and get some info on atlanta.  thanks
ya'll!

hi folks,

just a *brief* comment on the recent midori post and other similar
posts...

would everyone please think before posting reprimands for newbies (and
not-so-newbies) posting faux-paus...

we have posting guidelines set up to steer us away from a few things but
as i'm sure we are all aware of...very few listess, newbies or
otherwise, read the entire faq prior to posting.

the best way to handle questions and topics we do not discuss is to
privately and politely inform the person who posted.

ridiculing and belaboring the post(s) only serve to hurt people's
feelings and can end up causing people to leave the list.  this seems to
be happening more and more lately.

remember please this listserv is open to everyone and that all opinions
are valid.

however, having an opinion or being on the list for a certain amount of
time should not be demonstrated by insulting, bullying, or belittling
other opinions expressed on the list.  discussion is a wonderful
thing...so are intelligent arguements.  but we should also agree at
times to disagree...

that said...i would also like to ask y'all to remember to not send
excessive html-rich text to the list.  and please remember to keep your
sigs between 6-8 lines.

thanks for reading.  please email me if you have any comments.

can someone inform me when one's age, education level and family status
gave one the right to a flame retardant suit.  is that like a rite of
passage after getting your second degree (rop--there was my igc-haha)?  i
guess mine's in the mail then.  i feel that whenever someone gets flamed or
treated rudely that they need to look at the source.  why is one "hurt" so
badly by words written from a total stranger.   i am sure midori from japan
has long since moved on and is not so hurt as those trying  to defend her.
why does listening to ig make everyone so sensitive around here?  they're
tough and would quickly shrug off a fan letter condemning them and calling
them names.  so follow your brave leaders and obtain a spine.

such complacency would disappoint amy.  they are all about breaking the
rules and going outside the mold.  by staying silent after some dumb ass
reems you is just as large a crime.  stick up for yourself.  if you can't
be a little self-righteous now and then you will be stomped in our little
imperfect world.  i am glad this person finally spoke out--sounds like it
has been pent up for awhile *clap clap*.  sorry jen l, i promise to be
quiet now. btw, the list has been wonderful since you have taken over.

ya know, its very true this list is way too sensitive.  i really don't
rememebr and public flamings directed at midori.  my theory is that
someone out there thought that she was being flamed, so they flamed
the inexistant flamer.   yeah.....
hmmm, i guess there was that "pick-on" but it wasn't a flame, just a
middle school sort of ego builder.....
that was about it.  i think that people get too bothered by things
that may have happened.  i'm sure a few people nicely privately wrote
midori and told her the rules.  sure that one person who made fun of
her was a bit childish....
but there were no "you bad bad rule breaking person!!"  cuz she didnt'
deserve it.
if there *is* that 3 hits thing...i think we should not give people
only 1 chance as a whole....
the 3 hits thing is more lenient then some people on this list.....

gotta interject here......

in my experience, the vast majority on this list are indeed 'kind
friends'........the occasional misunderstandings that occur seem to be more
a matter of varying interpretations than any real malice.....

unfortunately, the printed word can often convey a different meaning than
that which is intended; hence the widespread usage of emoticons.......but
even carefully worded messages occasionally strike a wrong chord.......i've
been called to task on more than one occasion, and have always done what was
necessary to resolve any differences......

anyone can make a mistake.......(except, of course, the anti-abortion,
anti-gay zealots calling themselves operation rescue america who are
currently making their unwelcome prescence known in my home town.........)

peace,
tim

i think i should go ahead and take this opportunity to point out that lisa
dupre (that would be me) **never** claimed to be amy ray.    i'm not quite
sure why carrie refers to me here, but i certainly don't want anyone to get
that idea.    mike was trying to be funny, in case anyone (other than
martine, jennifer, twink or chris) didn't get it.......................

i can decipher song lyrics because i'm one of those audience members that
listen quietly.    only heard amy sing b&f once (at a soundcheck), and well,
i can't help the birthday thing - you'd have to talk to my parents about that
one <grin>.

and carrie, this isn't a comment on your letter at all, but the fact that you
brought my name up again made me think i'd better straighten this out before
it got out of hand!
thanks!

guest star that everyone was talking about a few weeks ago.  is there
any conformation that it will be emily with her singing the new single?
when will her new single with emily be released on cass/cd (not the

i am still looking for a few more volunteers to help tree the
"smallternative" tape.  for those who don't know, this is a 90 minute
tape of 12 brave listees performing original songs and spoken word
pieces.  a must have for any fan of underground musical
endeavors...and there's a heck of a lot of talent in our midst!

i will announce the tree information when i have the branches all set
up.

for those who have volunteered already...sit tight.  i'll be sending
info your way when i figure this all out.

well, not that i'm that athletic or anything, but songs that would keep me

bury my heart at wounded knee, galileo, land of canaan, chickenman, closer to
fine, tried to be true, hammer and a nail, 1 2 3, shame on you, get out the

[note: please try not to reply to the list about this; it's off-topic
enough as it is, and i don't want to waste any more bandwidth than i have
to . . . private replies to me are more than welcome, though.]

seems tv shows are under a lot of attack these days . . . and you know,
after that teletubbies thing (i won't say more, i swear) i figured it was
only a matter of time before they jumped on somewhat more obvious shows.

don't know how many of you may have heard, but recently several hindu
groups successfully protested an episode of xena (yeah, i know, i'm
obsessed, but this time i'm serious) called "the way," pressuring studios
usa and renaissance pictures to completely remove the episode from
worldwide syndication.  those affiliates which have aired it will not do
so again, and those which have not never will.

the grounds for their protest, it seems, were, first of all, that they
objected to the god krishna being portrayed as a fictional character, and
that he would never "help xena save her lesbian lover."  (now, i know i'll
swear up and down, personally, that it's not subtext, but still, it was
never official . . . or are they being less vague than they think they
are?)  now, i can understand being upset at the portrayal of one's
religious figures, but religions get slammed all the time, in the media
and elsewhere, and it's rarely, if ever, been grounds for censorship
before.  besides which, the portrayal of the hindu gods was
well-researched and more respectful than the portrayal of any other gods
i've ever seen on that show.  it's the other half of the protest that
really bothers me.  giving in to protests that touch on homophobia . . .
that, to me, is a dangerous precedent for any television show to set, and
i don't like the implications of the whole situation.

but i'm rambling again, and probably talking more out of my own anger at
this than anything else.  there's an archive of articles and links
regarding this censorship at
http://www.tsoft.com/~cmwilson/protestcensorship.html
that explains it much better than i can, and also provides addresses and
contact information for anyone who cares to speak up about it.

i understand that buffy the vampire slayer and ally mcbeal have also come
under similar, if less severe, fire in recent weeks.

*sigh*  it's a sad day when our society can take such a backwards
step.  what *is* this world coming to?

apologies for the off-topic rant.  i just felt that some of the forces at
work here might be of concern to people on the list.

i would like to change the subject if possible because all of this flamming
is or has caused cinders within the list.  is it me or did other people when
listening to so, realize that there was a theme of the holocast and how
lesbians/gays were affected during the hitler ear?  i say, how lesbians/gays
were affected because they were persecuted and that is the history on the
pink triangel. (the patch worn instead of the yellow star).

hi everyone,

because of the near heroic downloading efforts of barb jaeger, i'm ready to
start the mp3 cd tree. i'd like a few volunteers who have access to cd
burners who would be willing to make copies for folks on our list.

there are 2 cds - one nearly 600 mb, and one a little over 300 mb. it
shouldn't take you much time to burn them.

if you can be a branch, please let me know. and for the rest of you folks
that want a copy of the cds, wait for just a little while until i can get
this under control and we'll have them out to y'all very quickly.

thanks!

hey yall

last night i was on aol and vonda shepard was doing one of those celebrity
chat things so i sat in on it.  i sent in several questions, but none of them
made it to her.  she did talk about her new single that she recorded with
emily and how when she first heard it, she said it was her favorite song of
vonda's so on tour when vonda was opening for them, emily and vonda started
singing it together and finally they recorded it together.  no news on
whether emily is actually going to be on ally, but vonda said the song will
be on ally next week, april 26th.  also, when i was at the chat, i got to
download a sound wav from the new song and it's beautiful!  vonda and emily
are amazing!  if you want me to send it to you, it's about 22 seconds.  just
ask and i'll send it out in a mass mailing tomorrow!

about it.  thanks.

here's the way i go about it, i'm sure it's not the most orthodox, expeditious
or efficient, but it works for me.

first thing i do is see if i can find anything the songwriter has done before.
especially tabs for guitar. this gives you a
good insight as to how they write music. for example amy tends to stick to i  iv
v  pattern a lot (as in land of canaan g  c  d), doesn't use alternate tunings
very often in her older stuff and will occassionally use a capo. on the other
hand you have emily ( ore even more atrociously to transcribe joni mitchell) who
will employ not only jazz-type chords (crazy game) or non-standard tunings (love
will come to you dadgad)  as well as capos. sometimes you get a nice combo of 2
or 3 of these (galileo capo 5 and dadgbc).  also release that although one
guitar is capoed or tuned differently, others may be in standard tuning ( check
out adam schneider's chart for mary-chapin carpenter and you'll see what i
mean). also a warning people like folker phil ochs or even oasis are known for
tuning their guitar maybe about a 1/4 step down/up which makes it pretty hard to
match.

second thing i do is kind of weird but works well for me. i play other
instruments, the accordion, bass, mandolin, harmonica, dulcimer, and some
others. what i do is play along with the song and notice what notes work and
which ones don't.  i used the accordion when working out it won't take long and
noticed that i didn't use any sharps or flats. from that i knew the key was
going to be in c or am. from that, most of the chords should be taken from the
key signature. (exceptions from the key signature usually happen in the bridge
if there is one).

third thing i do is sit there usually with a lyric sheet that i can write on and
pick a couple of chords from the key and try and play along with the song. if i
hear a chord that clicks while playing along i'll write it on the sheet. i'll
also note it anywhere that it may reoccur (if it's at the beginning of a verse,
i'll try at the beginning of the other verses etc).

screwy ...yes.....unorthodox, time consuming...well, i did warn ya....but it
works for me.  hope this helps someone. :@)

hi, all! =)
i just want to take this opportunity to tell you about something in
which i am participating and to give you all the information you might need
to help support the efforts of my teammates and myself.  the project of which
i speak is through and organization called earth challenge.
through endurance events such as long-distance bike rides, earth
challenge generates financial support, raises awareness, and inspires action
to serve communities presently working to protect the environment and to
promote sustainable living.  i am part of a team of ten people currently
training for "shifting gears - ride for environmental action."  on the 3rd of
june, we will embark on a six week biking and hiking journey from atlanta to
the havasupai community in the bottom of the grand canyon.  it's
approximately 2500 miles.  the ride officially ends at the head of the trail
to the community.  we will hike the eight miles down to the village and spend
a week there learning about the havasupai culture and environmental issues.
the havasupai are working to protect their greatest assets - the land,
the water, and the air.  they are developing a recycling program and trying
to improve the condition of the community landfill.  the biggest challenge
they face, however, is how to prevent the installation of uranium mines near
their only water supply, havasu creek.  mining severely contaminates any
nearby water supplies, therefore it is a serious threat to the survival of
the havasupai.
as a mamber of the earth challenge team, my goal is to raise at least
one dollar per mile of my trip while i am training for the event.
contributions can range from one penny to thousands of dollars.  100% of this
money goes directly to the havasupai environmental initiatives fund.  please
join me in this team effort by making a tax deductible donation.  not
everyone has the desire to undergo such a physical challenge, but i know that
all of us have the desire to help.  together we can conquer one of the
biggest challenges we all face - protecting our environment and the health of
our communities.
completing the ride is also a huge personal goal for me since, as many
of you know, i have had a very hard time with asthma in the last few years.
i've been training six days a week since the first of the year to improve my
cardiovascular and general health.i'm pushing myself farther than i ever have
before in the hopes that i don't fall off the bike before we get there!  i
would really, genuinely appreciate any sponsorship you are willing to give.
every single penny counts!  (right now, unfortunately, i just haven't been
able to collect enough of them!)
thank you very much for taking the time to read this far!  if you'd
like to participate, you can either print the form below and mail it to me,
or just write to me with all of the information for which it asks.  or you
can fill out none of it and just donate anonymously, which would also be
fine! =)  (at this point, i'm really not too concerned about the
formalitites!)  i can't offer you any material rewards, but i will send a
nice thank you note, maybe a postcard or two along the way, and a big, huge,
sincere, advance "thank you."  maybe i can send some of you guys some mix
tapes or something when i get back in august.  donors who contribute a gift
of $250 or more will also receive a thank you letter from earth challenge,
which is necessary for tax purposes.  for donations under that amount, a
cancelled check will suffice for tax purposes.  also, if you or your business
would be interested in donating on a corporate level, please do.  if i can
get a few large sponsorships that way, perhaps i won't have to beg all of my
friends for sponsorship!  please feel free to pass along and forward this
information to your friends, family, business partners, golf buddies...
anyone!  i need all of the support i can get, and i know that you, the people
who have been supportive in the past, will be willing to help.  thank you
very much!
please contact me if you have any questions or would like additional
copies of this information or know of anyone else to whom i should send
information.  also, check out the web site at www.earthchallenge.org.
aagain, thank you!  i deeply appreciate your support of my effort to "shift
gears" and take action on behalf of the havasupai and our environment! =)

hey everybody...

just a little bit of first hand info about the beloved calista. i went to
high school with her.. (i was a year ahead) while she was thin then, she is
wayyy thinner now. one thing remained constant: hollywood snobbery still fits
like a glove for her.

if emily truly shows up on the show.. i guess i'll have to watch.. but..only
the emily parts.. ;-)

(i, in no way have any contact with her.. i wasn't at her class reunion.. i
look at it as a fluke of nature that we were in the same place at the same
time...i didn't have lunch with her..  i did not "hang" with her after
school....i'm not a member of her fan club.. nor do i watch her tv show...and
so on...)

i know this will be sent to private e-mail soon and i'd like to get on my
soapbox for a moment...

why are we (general public) judging her so harshly?  so she looks skinny,
ill, or whatever.  it's not our place to make such judgments.  for one
thing, we don't know her personally therefore are not privy to her personal
habits.  i was and am still a very shy and reserve person.  i do not share
my personal thoughts/hopes/dreams with just anyone.  i knew what people were
saying about me and it makes my heart ache.  but the people who made the
effort (and i do recognize this) to genuinely reach out to me are my friends
for life.  my 'be more outgoing' project is a work in progress.  the point
is, kindness should not be limited to just the people you
know/love/admire/etc.  kindness does not and should not have boundaries
based on ones appearance, perception, believes, etc.  enough out of me.
putting me soapbox away now.  thanks for reading.

bye now and take care,
mani

ok time for my soapbox. first ab is like, one of 5 shows i watch religiously
every week (unless i'm stuck at the store remodeling til 1am but thats
another story).

second, having dealt with an eating disorder myself, i can say she seems to
show all the symptoms. why should any of us care? i've got two words for ya:

karen carpenter.

well, i'm off to see paula poundstone tonite so i can try to laugh again
(weather doldrums?)  i've been buying lots of concert tickets for the summer
but alas, no ig tix. i can't wait for them to tour again.  unfortunately, if
they plan on touring in the fall, they won't be at the outside venues.
maybe they'll do lilith again in which case we can see them at the gorge
again. the most beautiful venue i've ever been to! if you ever have a chance
to see a show there, go! i swear you'll be amzed at the breathtaking view.
we'll at least be there to see john mellencamp and dave matthews.

i agree.  just because there are people obsessed with weight, doesn't mean that everyone should (or can be) the weight you'd like them to be, whether it be thinner or fatter.

if there's anything to hate in "ally mcbeal" it's the fact that it's set feminism back 50 years.  ally is clearly nothing without a man.  she's not even a very good lawyer, on the few occasions you actually see her practice law.  mostly she sits in her office and daydreams about her love life and having babies.

i especially liked the hilarious sexual harrassment on last night's show.  ha ha, look at that, he's just kissing his colleagues right on the lips, in the name of living life large!  give me a break.

otoh, i love that music plays such an integral role, that's a cool, unique thing in what is already a unique program (an hour-long dramedy).

if you want a good dramedy in which women both work hard and play hard, check out sportsnight.  great ensemble cast, some of the best writing and directing on tv.

back to your regularly scheduled programming...

hey everyone...
a bit of info for the sarah fans on the list:
as of today, and as we've previously posted, visitors to the
amazon.comweb

sarah'shighly
anticipated live album, mirrorball, which is due out in stores on june
15th. upon visiting the site, you'll be able to download for free live
versions of both 'i will remember you' and 'building a
mystery',courtesy
of nettwerk/arista, liquid audio inc., and of course, amazon.com.
to get to that location directly, go to:
http://www.amazon.com/sarah-exclusive
in addition to the free downloads at amazon.com, all you sarah fans can
also enjoy a number of other sarah exclusives as part of this
specialpromotion:
        * save 30% on pre-orders of mirrorball cd, as well as lilith fairvol.
2
and lilith fair vol.3, two more lilith fair cd collections which
feature performances culled from lilith '98, and which are due outin
          in stores on may 18th.
        * bid on 10 signed colour lithographs of sarah's original artwork,
available excusively at amazon.com auctions. all the proceeds will
go to sarah's chosen charity, lifebeat, a non-profit aids resource

i would like to change the subject if possible because all of this flamming
is or has caused cinders within the list.  is it me or did other people when
listening to so, realize that there was a theme of the holocast and how
lesbians/gays were affected during the hitler ear?  i say, how lesbians/gays
were affected because they were persecuted and that is the history on the
pink triangel. (the patch worn instead of the yellow star).

the article was almost believable, until the last line about spreading it

i'm sensing a bit of hostility, kelly.

i'm just catching up and this cracks me up - now i'm racking my brain
trying to think of one of the many songs of barry white, but the only
thing that keeps running through my head is "i love to love ya baby" by
donna summers - which is good that i can only remember very little
from that horrible disco era.  let's have a barry white-a-thon in our
heads.  who can name some of his songs?

hey again folks...

it's just a tv show!!!

i feel better now.

and for those who are still traumatized by last night's lack of emilyness:
get over it.

mr. sympathy, that's me :o)

some of the many hits of mr. barry white, the walrus of love:

my first, my last, my everything
just the way you are (billy joel wrote it!)
practice what you preach
love's theme
your sweetness is my weakness

and who could forget the all-time classic (and every grandmother's
favourite)

it's ecstasy when you lay down next to me

if you'll forgive me, i'm going to have to take 'a moment'...

hkf,
it has been a very long time since i've written to this list...mostly
because of my continuing ill-health, but also because of apathy in what
has been going on with this list.

however, something happened today to make me wake up.  this horrible
murder in littleton has haunted me all day.  you see, i went to school in
the same county as all this.  my best friends went to chs.  and even more
personal, my mother was a guidance counselor at the school....until last
year.  i keep thinking what my life would be like if she was still
working there.  i keep thinking about the horror that would have entered
into my life.  i'm thankful that i'm not faced with that situation.

but then i get worried.  friends of mine haven't been able to get in
touch with their parents....they've had no word about siblings who still
go to school there.  and as the rain begins to fall here in colorado, my
thoughts to turn to my mother.  she's still alive, but she lost friends
at the school (teachers she had worked with for years).  and my thoughts
turn to some of my high school teachers, who transferred to chs from the
high school i was at (arvada west hs).

it seems to me that schools should be worrying about safety given the
rash of homicides occurring in schools across the country.  it seems to
me that schools in the south should be more concerned about their own
safety than the sexual orientation of musicians who are going to play at
their schools.

yes, it's a dark day in colorado.  for those of you with children, hug
them and love them....you never know if you'll see them again.

lance, my friend.......your silence has been disturbing......i wish it had
not been yet another tragedy that provided the impetus for your return......

i pray that the light of a new day will shed good news about the welfare of
your friends and former teachers.......

here in western ny, students arriving at my high school alma mater on monday
were greeted by a group calling itself operation save america, led by jerry
falwell (i never saw a camera i didn't like) wannabe flip benham.......using
the tired but emotionally polarizing abortion issue to promote an agenda
that targets gays and bookstores in addition to providers of women's health
care.......

i'm tired of seeing people i care about being used as "whipping boys" by
those who have no understanding or compassion.......there is a long night
ahead of us if these people ever attain the power that they seek.......

to me, the real cancer in our society is in the glorification of
violence........it exists everywhere, and it has been increasing at an
alarming rate......all too frequently now we are seeing the results....

we manufacture wars in the name of profit and sell them in the name of
peace........we elevate brutality and misogynation to an art form......(i
don't see anyone picketing the multi-billion dollar wwf).......yet the right
would make pariahs of artists such as sally mann and david hamilton........

perhaps someone would care to poll native americans on this government's
record of treatment of indigenous minorities.......????

the right wing has an agenda......and it's timetable is short.......i pray
for all of us.......

peace......

hey intimate strangers,

today i was babysitting my cousin's son(4mos.)--and he was feeling bad
from his shots earlier that day at the doctor's office.  my cousin
said to walk him around the neighborhood if he keeps crying.  i ended
up giving eddie the walkabout four times...on the second run, we
stopped at a corner and i looked at the street sign, indigo hills dr.,
and just stared at it again, noting that if i had paint, i could
change two letters and it would be indigo girls dr. *laughs wickedly*

eddie didn't particularly like me playing on his tape player "you left
it up to me"...but later, i was singing the words to his little book
"the itsy bitsy spider" and then i realized that emily and amy have
covered this song, and like an idiot, i tried to sing amy's harmony
part without emily's melody...(who do i think i am?) anyway, eddie
stopped crying when i began singing the song over and over again and
even gurgled twice...o happy day

of course, while typing all of this, i realize that amy and emily have
played at eddie's attic numerous times...(a venue in georgia, not my
cousin's house).

laughing and grinning to herself when only two hours' earlier she was
crying for the students at columbine hs in littleton, co,
the even more cynical diane

hey y'all,

i have a friend who is a wonderful young musician.  he is planning to be in
atlanta this summer, between a mission trip to kenya and his job next year,
sponsored by the society of friends, working with the homeless on the streets
of new york.  he is truly a rare spirit, as well as a multi-talented
musician.  at any rate, he is interested in interning at daemon records while
in atlanta. any of you know a contact name at the label that he could call
for an interview?

your help is greatly appreciated.  he is going to atlanta this weekend and
would love to have some info in hand before he goes if possible.  i think
he's going to visit a mutual friend who is currently studying at emory's
candler school of theology where emily's dad teaches (another bit of igc in
this personal post!)

thanks for tips,

pam

hey all,
i don't post that often about up and coming musicians, but there is someone
that i want to tell you about.  her name is amanda garrigues.
she's from gainesville, fl.  she is currently competing in the eddie's
attic open mic contest and is already in the final competition in june.
she is playing a finalists' showcase at eddie's on tuesday, may 4 at 8pm.
people, i implore you to check her out.  she's an acoustic
singer/songwriter that can rock out with a band too.  i saw her perform
just 2 songs and i was taken in.  she will be playing in atlanta in the
coming months at eddie's, smith's, and the point.  i know you guys will
like her and she needs our support.

you can check out her page at  http://members.xoom.com/amanda29
she is playing in:
orlando with terri binion and danielle howle on april 28 at the sapphire
supper club
atlanta on may 4 at 8p at eddie's attic
charlotte on may 14 at fat city
nyc on july 4 at 8p at the elbow room

that's all.
email me with any questions...or if any of you know of her already i'd love
to hear from you!
thanks,
cheri

she played lilith in '97.  at deer creek in indy, emily and amy came
out and sang "wild horses" with her.  we got to talk with emily and
michelle for a bit - it was cool.
as far as "women's music" - it will always continue to be made - sarah
mclachlan didn't start it, and there will always be women rockin' the
music world, as opposed to the "cute chick singer" construct (which will
always exist, too, i wager).

how about this for a scenario.....

orig they had scheduled it for this week (4/19), but changed it so that it
would be on after the vonda shephard album (with the duet w/ es) was
released.

seems plausible?

on z100 nyc yesterday morning they said that the people that do ally mcbeal
were re-editing the ending 2 hours before it aired monday night to change the
ending to the barry white song not the vonda shepard song.

z100 said they were going to call vonda and talk to her about it, but were
disappointed to find the new ending that night and promised to call vonda
*next week* after it aired .... something about it needing to coincide with
her cd release.
