hi everyone,

the latest website -- lift -- from jodi e. hersh graphic design &
photography, inc.  is up!  check is out at
http://www.orangestar.com/lift
and let me know what you think.

the site features an embedded quicktime audio file on the first page so
it's best if you have that plug-in loaded.  you can get it at
http://www.quicktime.com.  if you don't have the plug-in, you will still
be
able to access everything, you simply won't hear the groovy opening
sound.

for those of you who were familiar with my previous lift website, this
new-and-improved site features many more goodies -- lots of nifty hidden

surprises, real audio sound clips (and very very soon... quicktime video

clips!!!).

you can also subscribe to lift email and be kept up to date with all
sorts
of lift related news and tour dates, sign the guestbook and let the
everyone know what's on your mind, read the latest road diary entries,
get
the lyrics to lifelike not printed int the cd-booklet, plus many many
other
things!

please report any bugs or typos if you encounter any!

thanks,
jodi hersh

for myself, the side i like best is whichever i happen to be listening to at
any given time.......90 minutes of unfamiliar words and music is a lot to
absorb at one time......yet i can't imagine the tape without a single
performance......it all fits......

my dissention is with chee's modest appraisal of her own
contribution......there is a raw, joyous energy about it that is
infectious......i can't tell you how many times i've walked around at work
with "walkin' back to georgia" on endless replay in my head.......

peace,

hey kind friends, fellow ig-chicks fans,

while surfing both the lilith and pollstar sites, i was pleased (okay,
ecstatic) to find that the dixie chicks play at lakewood amphitheater in
atlanta on sunday july 25, the day after the 2nd atlanta lilith show.
are there any folks out there who plan to go to the saturday, 7/24
lilith show and to the dixie chicks concert the following night?  i
think i'm going to do that, and it would be awesome to see the chicks'
show with some fellow ig fans.  anyone planning on doing both shows?
maybe we could put together an ig-chicks concert caravan or something!
i don't think tickets for either show go on sale until may 22, so
there's plenty of time to plan.   heck, you never know who might show up
as a special guest at the chicks' show... <g>

peace!

place here at bluffton this past fall when a girl tried to burn down my

grateful!

i really appreciate your help.  this list is such a great resource! ;)

ok, excuse me while i go and find the paper with the details about this story.....

wow - recycling bags are so handy.....

anyway, to go back to the main story....

sinead o'connor is now known as mother bernadette marie, and was ordained as a latin tridentine priest last week in a hotel suite in lourdes, france, by bishop micheal cox. however, the catholic church disagrees, since it has seen bishop cox as a rebel since his divorce. she apparently celebrated by dancing around her hotel suite for 20 minutes to "vampire slayer" by the reggae star lee perry.

sinead claims she is now authorised to say mass, officiate at weddings and funerals, and adminster the last rites. she says she will continue to perform on stage, although never without wearing her dog collar. future recordings will be made under her new name.

ok, hope that helped.... oh, and btw..... the last two paragraphs were courtesy of the guardian newspaper (uk paper).....

john.

hi all,

i'm studying radio and for an assignment i am putting together a special
on women in music.

does anyone know where i can find *audio* interviews either on the
internet or that you have on cassette, video etc.

if you are willing to send me a tape of interview(s) i could work out some
kind of trade for them, but to use them in the assignment i will need them
by may 21st at the lastest (and i am in australia) so the soon we can get
this organised the better.

i won't waste any more bandwidth with this - but if you can help - please
get in touch with me asap

thanks
joanna

ps - the interviews will be used in an assignment - for academic purposes
only and will not be broadcast.

i'll second tim on this (and i know its hardly fair for us to be
throwing our private tea party in the midst of all of you, but it
brings up an interesting side-note (aka "what i learned while spending
my winter putting together a compilation tape"))...there seems to be a
sentiment behind this comment that music is only shareable when its
"good enough".  that you have to have a certain technical expertice or
aptitude or years of hard practice behind you before you share your
music with the world.  i'm learning to disagree...if you wait until
you're "good enough", you could end up waiting an awfully long time
(and those greedy sorts in your midst who want to hear raw, infectious
music (like chee's) might get kind of bummed for missing out).
there's a lot to be said for keen musicianship (wow, i am just a
fountain of big words today), but there's a lot to be said for earnest
, passionate music, which is in some ways, a lot more real than some
of the bland, overproduced mind candy that makes its way onto the
radio...

which segways nicely into topic number two:  jeff black...played
schuba's last night...go see him.  i repeat, go see him.  his promo
material has him pegged as a young bruce springsteen, but i thought he
sounded a lot more like a male carrie newcomer...both in style and in
lyrics.  a definite spiritual, socially consious bent, balanced by a
self-affacing loopyness (i challenge you to find me another artist who
goes--in one set--from growing-up-in-the-heartlands ballads, to a song
about noah's ark (i'm not overtly religious, but this song came so
close to making me cry), to a 10 minute, largely ad-libbed
tipsy-late-night-in-a-greasy-spoon jazz to country to spoken word ("i
need some change for the jukebox, and some change for that there pay
phone, and some change for my laundry, and some change for that little
vending machine in the men's room, and some toast with butter, and
little jelly cups, you know those little jelly cups...") to heavy
distortion and back again diatribe (complete with a wickedly out of
tune verse of "the lady is a tramp").  another great talent who is
getting no radio play in this area...so check him out, y'all.

this public service announcement has been brought to you by shelley,
who has officially enlisted in the jilly crusade to further the cause
of good music.

pease,
shel

hi all,

i have just received some brochures for possible places to go on vacation,
there was one which caught my attention from the georgia music hall of fame.
the museum is located in macon, georgia.  it says that there are concert
videos, rare photos, instruments and memorabilia of hundreds of georgia's
artists.  the list on the brochure included the indigo girls.  has anyone
been there or have any information on whether it was worth seeing.

take care,

if you bookmark both these sites, you should never be without the much need

hope this helped.

hey folks,

this comes from wall of sound - nothing really new, but it's a
nice wrap-up...

april 27, 1999
lilith fair lineup announced

the lineups and dates for lilith fair '99 have been announced. tour
founder sarah mclachlan will once again headline, along with sheryl
crow, the dixie chicks, shawn colvin, suzanne vega, and the
pretenders.

this year's lilith will run 40 dates, kicking off in mclachlan's
hometown of vancouver, b.c., at thunderbird stadium on july 8.
the final date comes almost two months later at commonwealth
stadium in edmonton, alberta. and final it will be - 1999 likely
marks the last year for the lilith fair.

besides the aforementioned artists, deborah cox will play the main
stage, as well as lilith veterans the indigo girls, queen latifah,
luscious jackson, martina mcbride, monica, mya, and me'shell
ndegeocello. criticized after its first year as being a somewhat
homogenous package made up, for the most part, of female folk
singers, lilith has consistently diversified its lineup, and this year's
bill is no exception. with a roster that includes folk, rock, r&b, rap,
and country, there is little doubt that the traveling festival of women's
music will once again have countless fans.

lilith's second stage will see performances from cibo matto, k's
choice, sinead lohan, aimee mann, beth orton, bijou phillips,
sixpence none the richer, cree summer, susan tedeschi, and
kelly willis, among others. also on the bill this year will be local
winners of the lilith fair acoustic talent search, offering local
musicians an opening slot when lilith comes to town.

specific performance dates for each performer have yet to be
announced, though mclachlan will be on hand for the entire tour.
for more details, check out the lilith fair web site
(www.lilithfair.com).

alright, i am going to join diane, and tell about my ig moments:

1)  tonight some of my friends and i went to this bar close to campus.  it
was fun, we were just chillin', drinkin', and playing lots if ms. pac man
(i swear, i love that game!).  anyway, one of my best friends ran up to me
and said "i'm playing a song just for you!"  so we waited (like forever)
for our songs to come on the jukebox.  surly enough, she played an indigo
girls song for me.  all of my friends and i sang aloud (quite loudly, i
assume, but we were pretty much wasted) to galileo.  it was cool.

2)  i checked my e-mail and my mom had sent me a forward about what kind
of tree are you.  (oops, i should have used quotation marks.  sorry).
anyway, it corresponds with your birthday.  i was born on 20 august, and
the tree for 20 august is...you guessed it...a cedar tree!
hummm...interesting that my "tree" would be the title of an ig song.  :-)

okay--here's a little story about my little random life and the freaky impact
that this list has had on my life..(in fifty words or less...ha...)

okay...just landed a job in alaska...granted its seasonal, but things have
been kind of in a rut for a while and i need to get out and get away...and
strange, seemingly random, fly by the seat of my pants things usually work
out best for me in the long run...

i found this list last july--i remember it really well...my parents were out
of town, i was up really late playing on the net just looking for
entertainment, trying to find an ig bumper sticker (which i still haven't
found yet...) and trying to get a grip on life...(don't quite know if i
really have that grip...but, that's alright!!)

i get into the tape trading scene...love them tapes...cant' make enough of
them...one day, my tape deck dies...four months later i purchase a new tape
player...throw this little "i'll make you tapes b/c i have this rockin new
tape deck" offer on the floor...get this email from an alaskan addy...i love
alaska...want to go back there...have been obsessed with it for two
years...devoted a whole map making unit while i was student teaching to
studying alaska and the different regions/symbols/etc...anyway, i start
corresponding with akpups (linda) and ask her how i can get into the job
market in alaska...this wonderful woman faxes me a bunch of newspaper ads
with jobs that she thinks i might be interested in...anyway, to make a long
story short(er)--i got a job up at denali national park starting june
1st--september 12....five days on--two days camping...a little working
vacation and i meet my goal of being in alaska come june of 99...(which i had
promised myself i would do when i graduated from school last may...)

anyway, that's my story....isn't it cool?  and i owe much of this to this
list!!  so, thank you my little ig obsessed friends for being out there for
me!!!

sad part...i have to sign off in twenty-two days (actually, the day that i
turn 23...)...and i will miss all of the summer shows....which was something
that i really thought about as i was freaking out about taking the
job...."but, i'm going to miss ig @ lilith...and newport...and..ani...and
summer in minnesota...and this incredible person i've kind of fallen in love
with..."  but, in the end...it's four months...it's alaska...and i need
it...almost as much as i need breath in my body...

yeah, baby....i feel like this is the first huge decision that i have ever
made....it's awesome...also scares the shit out of me....  but, it feels so
good!!!  :)

love you all!!!!
thanks for listening...
peace,
kara.

we just had a discussion on this on a mailing list i was on.  this was
forwarded with permission from my wife (forget lesband for me....i don't go
for no seaparate but equal terminology). it just codifies what i've long
thought about this subject. now if it was calvin, maybe i'd call my support
as those products hardly do the harm that ab does. but i'll give this a
miss. i think this community is strong enough not to go groveling and
profusely thanking any1 who markets us in a positive light.  just remember
the power of the almighty dollar is all that matters to them.  now a word
from my sponsor.
-----------------------------------------

i'll take a turn at playing the curmudgeon.
i'm tired of the alcohol companies pandering to our collective alcoholic
proclivities.  a community with as much rampant alcoholism as ours could use
a little less attention from busch, coors, absolute et al. and more from
.... say.... microsoft just for example.
year after year, organizing the pride events in seattle, the booze companies
would throw themselves at us like so many tawdry hos.  with so few
alternative suitors, cash starved pride organizations usually sucumb to the
temptation, eventually feeling flattered and relieved to have some - any
support.  they promote their products in our community because they know
they have in us a reliable sink for their wares, period.  they almost
assuredly do *not* publish their targeted gay ads in mainstream
publications.  they can also be confident that no bud swilling redneck will
care that some queer shares their taste in brew and boycott 'em

hi

you know, i think it's really neat that this kind of media (i.e.
advertising) is acknowledging that gay people do, in fact, drink beer,
(what a shock!) but realistically, this doesn't mean anything as far as the
acceptance of gay people in society.  wow, i'm so happy i get to be marketed
to, yay!  it doesn't empower people or make it more accepted.  is some
bigot gonna say to himself, "wow, if bud light thinks it's okay, then
golly gee, i guess i'll go out and love my gay brothers and sisters."  uh,
no.

advertisers like this sense that the gay dollar is a mighty dollar, and
they feel they're big enough to weather any kind of flack they know
they're gonna get.  rednecks won't stop drinking their bud b/c of one
lousy ad, and the "christian [not]rights" aren't the audience bud is trying
to target, anyway.  so they get to expand their market and get good gay press
for being so "inclusive".  gotta love capitalism, eh?

a couple months ago, i would have been just as supportive of an ad like
this, but reading the advertising zine "stay free!" and seeing the
short film at outwrite about an "anti-pride" rally in nyc,  about peeps
objecting to the commercialism of companies trying to market gay
people by underlining pride, which should be a community event, not a corporate
one, really opened my eyes to this ploy.  i'm not saying don't support
it, and good gay images are hard to come by in the mainstream, but just
know *why* you're supporting it. (forgive me, jenny k! :)
