hi folks!

i'm back!  maybe not everyone remembers me, but
hell, i remember y'all.  it's only been since july,
when i was having trouble with my server.  i got
booted and stayed off for a while.  now i'm back.
i've got lots to talk about (one big proposition,
which i'll get back to in a later e-mail) and lots to
trade (other than just tape boots).  but first, how
do i get on the ani list?  i used to laugh everytime i
saw someone ask the list about this, but now
i see why they were asking.  the main ani
website has a subscription method, but that
didn't work.  and, they didn't provide an alternate
method.  what's the address and command?
thanks, y'all!

hey all!

i was at the cranberries concert tonite in philly, which was awesome(!!!).
but to get to the ig content-- after the concert while my friend lee and i
were waiting for our ride, we decided to hang out in the back of the
theater... so we started talking to a guy who worked there, (nicest guy!) and
he was telling us all about the different personalities he's seen come
through there.  of course, i asked about ig.  he didn't particularly like
them, but the story he told us was cute:  amy (actually, he called her "the
dark haired one") had a mountain bike attached to the back of the bus, and
was having a really hard time getting it down.  so he jumped up there to try
to help her, and when he couldn't get it down she told him "i don't need a
man's help!!!"  he wasn't happy about it, but tough for him!  apparently the
tower has a wall of shame for the nasty celebs and a wall of fame for the
cool ones-- he didn't tell me of ig are on either wall though.
alright, i'm off to try to sleep despite the irish accent that keeps echoing
inside my head!  (i was this close to delores after the concert-- sigh!)
smiles,
~kristen

send a s.a.s.e to someone else in canada.....if anyone in the states has it,
maybe we could work something else out, like 2 blanks or something. thanks a

wrinkled, so i will send it to whomever wants it.  it will not be
appropriate for collectors since it got wet, but if you have a general

a 3 cd set - attack of the killer b-sides volumes 1-3. a pretty much
chronological, nearly complete collection of official indigo girls rarities
(compilation tracks, b-sides, promo tracks etc.). full length promos, like
'reverse-1' and 'shades...' haven't been included.

to save on bandwidth, the full tracklist has been placed here:
http://www.netreach.net/~andineil/scans/bsides.html
and the full cover art is available for download - just follow the link!

suffice to say, they're a fine listen and well worth having...

i'm looking for ideas for other projects, there's some options at this
address, let me know if you have any thoughts.

to get your copy, contact the appropriate branch below, and arrange the
transaction. probably you'll send 3 blank cdrs, plus an ssae (stamped, self
addressed envelope). maybe trades can be worked out, but that's between
yourselves. i don't think every branch has artwork capabilities, so that's
why the art's at the website. whether the art's free or you should include a
couple of bucks is between you and the branch.

there's no other cost to yourself, although i'm sure it would be hugely
appreciated if you were to include an extra blank cdr, a couple of bucks, a
cool mix tape or other suchlike as a thankyou. but that's by no means
essential.

here are your branches, done by your birthdate. (if you have an ongoing
trading or email relationship with a different branch or whatever, the
birthday police will overlook it... just this once!)

jan 1 - feb 15:    lisa - shannon_l@mediasoft.net
feb 16 - march 31:    scott - wolf83@mindspring.com
april 1 - may 15:    resa - resa@ipeg.com
may 16 - june 30:    lauren - nakedeye10@aol.com
july 1 - august 15:    karen - kla@aloha.net
august 16 - september 30:    lori - loricollins@earthlink.net
october 1 - november 15:    robert - rkirkpat@phx1.bcbsaz.com
november 16 - december 31:    chris - imer5924@rh.edu

and for those who'd prefer cassettes: elaine - efbean@erols.com

please respect the branches if they've reached the limit of the cds they can
burn - it's a very time consuming task. you could always try someone else!

i've been v. selfish and not put myself as a branch 'cause i want to use my
time to work on future discs. also i've still a two branches to make sets
for. but if you have something you can trade me for volume four (details of
which are also at the website) let me know and i'm sure we can work
something out!

i think that's basically it!!
i know i can be difficult to understand sometimes, so if you have any
questions, you know where i am.

and get those ideas/suggestions/affirmations in for future projects, 'k??

peace and stuff

neil

ps. sherlyn - thanks for always dilligently copying this to the news list!!
you're a sweetie. or if i can't say that (and my grandmother calls me her
'old lover' so sweetie is tame, belive me...) you're something else of a
nice, positive nature, a 'star' perhaps. oh, and i think the waifs are
pretty cool, thanx :o)

which is to say i'm looking for material for volume four, and if you have
something that i need (world cafe vol. 1, the shed your skin 12") we may be
able to work something out for volumes 1-3.

there is no volume 4 yet. but it's slowly taking shape :o)

april 28, 1999 -- the atlanta journal constitution

voices join up for littleton

by richard l. eldredge

last week as local songwriters david staton and jeff braner were recording
their song "together we can" in a nashville studio, the tv images from
colorado kept interfering with their progress.

"cnn was on mute," staton, a buford resident and father of a 4-year-old,
told us tuesday. "as the music played with the scenes on tv, i kept
thinking, 'next year, that could be my child.' it suddenly hit us that maybe
we could do something to help."

after a quick tweaking of their inspirational tune, which promotes "coming
together to solve mutual problems," and a few phone calls, a recording
session is set for thursday. at least 60 atlanta recording artists will
gather at a gwinnett county studio to cut a version of the tune to benefit
victims and families of the columbine high school shootings. a video will be
shot thursday night.

among those already confirmed are r&b vocalist tony rich, ed roland of
collective soul, marvelous 3, laface singers gaelle adaisson and sam salter,
gospel singer brian free, jazz vocalist teresa hightower and country singer
alan baker. invitations are out to travis tritt, alan jackson, usher, the
indigo girls, trisha yearwood, babyface and others.

jan smith, the project's vocal director and president of the atlanta chapter
of the national academy of recording arts & sciences tells us that shawn
mullins is on tour in australia and elton john is working in europe and
neither will be able to get back to town for the date.

"together we can" could be on store shelves as soon as next week.

shannon questioned why that song is not on the new album rooster.

i agree!!!!!!!!!!  why?!?!?!?!?  i have the san francisco boot and i
absoultely adore that song!!!  it reminds me of walking to class this past
summer at uc-berkeley (shallow, i know, but that is what i listened to on
my way to class.  besides, that is just a personal memory).

i too hope that they add that song later.  if not, i guess i'll just have
to rely on my favorite boot to hear it!

hi all,

indigo girls songs have finally made it on australian stores radio!!  a
friend of mine has been really sick lately and just wanted to get out of
the house so we went to mcdonald's for coffee - we are *so* sophisticated,
anyway, we're sitting and talking when what song should come on...least
complicated!  i don't think anyone else really understood our excitment.

then the next day i'd just finished a horrible horrible day at work in a
supermarket and on comes least complicated again!!  it really cheered me
up - i'm taking it as a sign that ig are going to follow lilith to
australia in december.

it's funny how just hearing an ig song can make me feel so much better.

hey there!

the tracks they have announced recording are:
1. faye tucker
2. compromise
3. philosophy of loss
4. ozilene
5. go
6. sister
7. gone again

other songs that could be on it:
chiapas bond, cold beer and remote control, hey andy, winthrop(?)

additions to above are welcome, but that's the list i have currently.  if
they are like other artists(i'm sure they are), amy and emily probably write
many many songs and then choose a dozen or so out of them to put on the
album.  but i'm just guessing.

indigo hugs,

shelley and all,

the song that starts out like..."up on a mountain...are you lonely?"or
something....i dunno what it's called, but when she, danielle, and michelle
m. played it at eddies attic, it totally dislodged every electron out of its
respective valence shell in every atom in every cell in my little body.  i'm
talkin' electrons doing cartwheels...for those of you into chemistry:

remember the nmr (nuclear magnetic resonance) thing?  where electrons do
flips....this song for some reason made my electrons flip out, and i'm not
sure if the electrons went back in place b/c ever since i've been messed up,
man!!!!

i'm counting down the days to when i'll be signing off the internet totally:
4 days.  will y'all miss me?

hey everyone... just a short note about "are you lonely"....

in a message dated 5/3/99 11:20:26 pm eastern daylight time,
tcheehill@aol.com writes: <<  i, myself, am wondering
about "chiapas bound" and "are you lonely...(up on a mountain top...)" >>

i don't think that "mountain top" will ever make it to a cd...

amy made-up  'are you lonely' at a writers night in december at eddies. it
was kinda part of an emotional defense response.

what happened was this: amy started to sing a song.. ( words: "me and my
baby... we drank some magic tea.. crusin' down the roads.... aesthetics of
poverty.. i'm goin down for the last time.. i shifted to my level.. can you
receive what you give to me.. somebody should set you free..in the morning,
when you wash your hair, i love simple things that make me know you're
there.. come every sunday evening ... it's leftovers from the week-enders.
lost items to identify.. frustration for the greivin...'') managed to get
through the first verse then stopped. amy said, "i change my mind.. i change
my mind.. i can't get through that."

talkin' to a few friends of mine.. we all noted that amy seemed visibly
shaken.. kinda on an emotional edge.. (kinda like almost walkin off a
cliff... ) she said next: "all right, we'll do a break-up song." that song
was "in a moment of forgiveness.. you'll reach out and take my hand" (also,
amy kinda put michelle on the spot when she threw a solo her way.. michelle
kinda rolled her eyes and shook her head.. )

feeling better and back in control, she continues: "let's do a song where we
all make up stuff." that is where "the mountain top' song comes from. the
impetus behind the song came from a guy who was hiking around the country.

this guy just kinda wondered into eddies and caught the show. from what i was
able to determine, he had no clue who amy was..

he managed to catch amy's attention between shows and had a short
conversation with her. he explained what he was doin.. and that he was blown
away by the performance. i believe he was from montana. the major theme in
"mountain top" is bitter root river. the bitter root river is in montana.

after that song. amy said.." it's fallin' apart.. now we're putting it back
together.. " next up: kristen hall, and a killer performance of "let it rain"
and "southern man."

i gotta tell ya all.. i think back on that night.. and.. well.. i still get
chills.. it was a real life changer..

have a great day everyone!  the words to bitter root river are below for
anyone who cares to read it..

peace
kathleen

tonight i've been sleepin on a mountain top..
with a billion stars for my witness..
in the morning i go down as the sun comes up...
i take a drink from the bitter root river..

chorus:
have you been lonely.
yes, i've been lonely ...
yes i've been lonely.. too
said now.. have you been lonely..
yes i've been lonely,
yes i've been lonely too..

yeah well tonight i've been sleepin on a mountain top
with a billion stars for my witness
in the morning i go down as the sun comes up
i take a drink from the bitter root river

danielle chorus:
sometime been lonely
sometimes been lonely
sometimes been lonely too...
sometime been lonely
sometimes been lonely
sometimes been lonely tooo..

tonight i've been sleepin on a mountain top
with a million stars for my witness<-------------------amy changed from
billion to million
in the morning i go down as the sun comes up
i take a drink from the bitter root river....

chorus 2
have we been workin
yes we been workin...
yes we been workin too...
i said.. have we been workin
yes i been workin
have we been workin too...

end of song...
(musical note.. it's very easy.. between g and d chords.. almost in a ozliene
feel..

i'm from oklahoma and it's terrible.  i'm in boston right now, but i have
lots of friends and family that were affected.  one cousin lost his house
completely so he, his wife and 2 small children are homeless.  my parents
live in western ok, which wasn't hit with tornados, but received
softball/baseball-sized hail.  the wheat crop (which would have been
harvested in a couple of weeks) was demolished and our house lost a couple
of windows.  i've been listening to oklahoma radio via the web
(www.katt.com--classic/modern rock) and there was a man in the hospital
pleading with anyone who could hear to find his 3mo. old daughter.  my
sister is in boarding school in okc and i was on the phone with my mother
until 5am trying to calm her--phone lines were down and the weathermen
were reporting a tornado at her high school.  she's ok, but so very many
people are not.  if you are religious at all, please pray to your god for
these people and give thanks for your own safety and that of your loved
ones.  life is so fragile and unpredictable.

hey again everyone..

while we're on the "what's on the cd" theme.. my question would be: what
about "little darlin'" and "the boys just laugh?" both songs seem to be very
finished. meaning that they appear to be in a final format.

little darlin' esp. is a true work of art. it has to be one of amy's finest
compositions. when you take into account that it is written from a mans pov
(more than likely) and surly isn't something that amy has experienced first
hand it has really captured a vision.

also, her descriptions of the painted sky and bombs exploding set against the
ravages of cancer destroying a body and lives.. well.. it's a powerful song..
everytime i hear it i just say.. "wow.. what a great f***in' song."

later all
kathleen

words below

hey little darlin' there something you that should know.
this thing is gonna out live us all... this thing it won't let us go.
gonna break us down to nothin. gonna eat from the inside out.
hey darlin' don't want you feelin' fall out.

now when the cancer finally took him i was watchin' the trucks pull in.
me and your daddy, we had a job under the ground mining uranium.
something things your daddy will leave you. something he don't.
something's gonna are be here anyhow, something's just won't.

one thing i want you to understand is, you ain't gotta be no minin' man.
i curse the day that i went down and i pulled that shit out of the ground.

livin' over in nevada. that's where you people come from.
your grandpa would take me and your daddy on down to the gunnery range.

we sit and watch the bombs blow until the sun goes down.
all them colors runnin' like the painted deseret..
and you get to see it now.
the good 'ole boys had something so dam secret
they had to hide it in the desert sand.
out there the sky so big and there ain't no mistakin' it.
who's got the winnin' hand.

i said i been all the way to alaska
to a town they call point of hope.
well they put some of what we got. just to see how it would grow.
i hear their liking' bobby(not srue of this line).. now it's runnin through
the caribou

so darlin'. you get to feel it too.....you get to feel it too..
i said so little darlin' you get to feel it too.

end of song.

actually, if you listen to the 1997 hte show from montana (you can still hear
this on the hte website), she sings part of the bitterroot river song during
chickenman.   just a few lines, but the song was born long ago.   i remember
talking about this with my friend alison way back then.  (hi alison!)    she
didn't just make that up on the spot that night - that was what was so funny
at the time - she said "let's make up a song", and she already knew what she
was going to sing - and poor danielle was a bit lost.    she came through it
beautifully though.

for the history lesson. perhaps the genesis for the performance was the

well, i now there are a few jewel fans on this list, so i thoght i'd just post my review of the concert she gave at the guildhall in southampton, england.

first off, the suppor act, steve poltz - he was excellent! he had a great sense of humour, and seemed to get on really well wit the audience and the other members of the band who came out to play with him (he plays accoustic guitar with jewel). i managed to buy one of his cd's, and get it signed by him on stage - i don't know how i managed to get away with that one, but he didn't get mad at me or anything. oh yeah - and he did a brilliant star wars song at the end of his set (if you ever see him live, see if you request it.....)

anyway, here's the set list for jewel (she didn't stick exactly to it, but it's roughly what she played.....)

near you always
deep water
what's simple is true
hands
jupiter
you were meant for me
solo ---- (she did a lot of requests here.... i asked for "cold song", but she didn't play it.... ah well....)
barcelona
life uncommon
foolish games
down so long
down
love me just leave me alone
who will save your soul

{encore}

absence of fear
angel standing by

she seemed to have a really nice time, although a lot of the audience seemed very unresponsive to start off with..... (they really got going later on....). i did manage to get a couple of things signed, like a tour guide and a ferry ticket (it was the only thing i had on me at the time, ok? :-).....). anyway, i really enjoyed the concert....

okay, anybody else given this long-awaited album a listen yet?  my personal
view is that it's a piece of garbage.   i'm usually not that critical... but
this album would be in my kitchen trash right now if it weren't for the amy
and emily's brilliant folked-out cover of "clampdown."  i love the clash, and
this album was not even _nearly_ what they deserved, as far as tributes go.
or maybe it's just that their kind of music can't easily be recaptured by
others.  i don't know, but  one listen to, "burning london," sent me running
for my cd collection to play a real clash album, and get the awful
aftertaste, (aftersound?), of the weak new offering out of my ears.   like i
said, indigo girls did a great job on their song, but nothing else on the
album is even worth listening to.  the other songs just sound either like
lame copies, (no doubt, mmbosstones, 311), or like terrible massacres of the
originals, (notably, ice cube... and don't get me wrong, it's not that i hate
rap).  afghan whigs performed the only other selection that didn't make want
to run from the room, (or at least turn the cd off), but their, "lost in the
supermarket," was only so-so, i'd say.

oh well, at least ig's song is good...  but then, when would it ever not
be? :)   i'm not surprised that the album is bad, (all the reviews have been
telling us as much)... but i _am_ glad that i happened to have an old media
play gift certificate stuffed in my wallet...   at least i didn't waste
hard-earned cash on this fiasco...

just my $.02,
~lisa

24th...yet the epic site says they are only confirmed for the 24th.  does
anyone know why this is? i sure dont want to buy tickets to both shows if
the girls will only be at one...

i just got a maine coon cat from the local shelter, and i want to give him a
good name, something that can relate to ig, or perhaps in their songs?
however, i am drawing a complete blank.  he's about a year old, black and tan
colored and and has tabby markings.  so i was wondering how many of you  had
ig themed cats?  any suggestions/ideas will be welcome!   thanks!

i've just been looking around various sites, deciding whether or not to buy
this album and i can say that i've not seen any good reviews yet!  certainly
not from the amazon.com site and not from our fellow listee, lisa!  :)

anyways, from my surfing, i found out that it was released yesterday in the
states, and i still can't find out whether it's been released here in the uk
yet or not.  there's also a comment from amy about the legacy of the clash
at the epic site:

indigo girls' amy ray:

"i didn't hear the clash until i was in college-the time of my great musical
awakening-and it was my introduction to the world of punk. i thought, 'oh,
okay, the sixties don't have a monopoly on politicized music-they never
did.'

"along with opening the pandora's box of philosophical
punk music, the clash led me back to the activism of early folk and the
organic political movements that exist
throughout music, throughout time, regardless of genre."

the epic site can be found here:

me again...

just want repeat this, i know there's been a great response from people
wanting cds, but the branches do have lives and if they're not getting back
to you straight away then there's no cause for alarm.

also if the branches have too many people wanting copies to stay this side
of sanity then they have every right to holler 'nuff and close the offer. if
this happens to you, please respect this. you could always try another
branch (your birthdate might be exceptionally popular, i don't know) or
alternatively wait a month or so and try again or post a 'want' message to
the list.

there's nothing worse than letting making copies for peolple take over your
life and getting jaded and wishing you'd never got involved and being put
off ever helping again, and if that happens to any of the branches i will
have failed in my mission to share the music and keep people happy so
they'll want to help out in the future.

once more, making copies for people takes time and effort. feel free to
reward your branches with extra blanks, chocolate, mix tapes, or at the very
least some words of appreciation. (they might, like i do, just stuff the cds
back in the mail with no personal response, but believe me, it's
appreciated. so everyone who has been considerate to me in the past,
consider yourself thanked.)

this has been a public service announcement.

sorry if this has already been talked about- my hotmail account is a little
slow on the uptake but i was watching party of five.  if y'all weren't aware
neve campbell's character has met an author who is a lesbian, and in
tonight's episode neve kissed her. the subsequent confusion of neve's
character leads to a discussion about it with the author, and during this
discussion they played "virginia woolf"  woohoo!!

you should have seen the smile on my face when i heard those opening notes!
i can name that tune in...!

>actually i thought they handled it quite well. any other thoughts?

i thought they handled it well too.  i wish *i'd* handled it equally well
when a straight woman developed a crush on *me* in school. :-)  come to
think of it, i probably find neve so terribly attractive because she
reminds me of that woman... but let's get this back on track, shall we? ;-)

i think there are plenty of women who are not gay but, because the
emotional nature of women's relationships, could develop romantic feelings
for another woman given sufficient motivation (like the revelation that one
of them is gay).  i thought the plot was quite realistic and touching.
well done!

i actually watched this show for the very reason that there was supposed to
be "contraversy"...  i suppose they played it because #1 the lesbian singer
connection to the character kissing another girl and # 2 because the girl
she kissed was a literary published writer ... they played virginia woolf..
who was a great literary writer.
interesting..  guess someone on the show did their research eh?

my kids watched the show, but i wasn't paying attention to it really -
so was the woman that neve campbell kissed supposed to be straight or
gay?  i mean, were they portraying two little bored hetero kids who were
experimenting with their sexuality, and trivializing same sex
interaction?  how did it come across?  on the news a little while ago,
they interviewed this lesbian bartender at one of the gay clubs here in
boston about "the kiss" on party of five.  they're making such a big
deal about this - although i guess it's a breakthrough in media.

okay, i never watch party of five (i swear!), but tonight was the episode
when julia starts her lesbian relationship, so my girlfriend and i were on
the phone together while watching the end of the show. one of the last
scenes was julia trying to talk to her new love interest about how confused
she was, and just as the show was ending, what do we hear but a few very
familiar notes and emily's sweet voice floating out of the tv! yay! (in case
you're wondering, i love amy with all my heart, but i'm a hard-core emily
person).

anyway, i do have a point. my beautiful girlfriend patricia brought up the
fact that tv shows and movies only ever use the girls' songs when there's
some sort of lesbian thing going on, not just because their music is amazing
and diverse and passionate etc. etc. or are we wrong about that? have you
guys ever heard their stuff on tv or in a movie when it didn't have some gay
tie-in? just wondering...

sweet dreams everyone!

actually, 'least complicated' was played on party of five when neve
campbell's character, julia, had informed her best friend, libby, that she
had been seeing libby's boyfriend.  also, 'mystery' was played on party
in a scene in which a side character had been dumped by her boyfriend
after she had sex with him.  so, i think that some people do appreciate
and recognize ig music for it's beauty and passion.  good to know.

not at all.  the instructor is a lesbian, and julia is developing an
attraction to her.  but the instructor doesn't want to take part in such an
"experiment," she explained that because she *is* a lesbian, that kiss
really means something, it's not an experiment.

i also liked that the instructor had been celibate for some time,
emphasizing the fact that being gay is who you are, not what you do.

well, not really... doesn't anyone remember rosanne kissing mariel
hemingway?  has "ellen" been forgotten so quickly?  or, the earliest i
remember.. the stunning amanda donohoe kissing michelle green on "l.a. law"?

okay guys, i have to rant about this.  i just saw a commercial for chevron about sinking an oil rig in the gulf of mexico to create an artificial reef.  it ends with "do people make sure nature has a place to call home?  people do."  now, does this not strike anyone besides me as being a little off?  last time i checked, nature was providing us a home and we ought to be paying attention to not f*cking her up.  am i completely gone on this?

regarding the message from little tiglet, wherein the tiglet sayeth:

"...i just saw a commercial for chevron about sinking an oil rig..."

did they really broadcast a pretentious, greenwashy 1/2 lie like that?! good thing somebody actually
thinks first before believing good ole tv. was this before party of five, after it, or squeezed in
between?

chevron loves you (and your gas guzzler automobile) if anyone tells you different, they must be
radical environmentalist/earth first/terrorists. just remain calm and watch those tv sets!

given, that we must all love ig, and what they take a stand for (as i see it, that would be a
passionate love of mother earth, justice, and truthfulness), perhaps as a group we could call, or
write, or email the stations broadcasting that corporate greenwash crud. don't just let it go by! be
like tiglet... right-on tiglet! even if you (and i) happen to be preaching to the choir.

of course if we are going to object to every lie... we may spend a lot of time objecting to much of
the televised "content." just as an experiment though--how many among us feel that chevron's "people
do" campaign is crap?

hi y'all,
just expanding on the party of five and ig thread - apparently neve
campbell is a huge indigo girls fan so that could explain ig's music in
party of five and their poster in neve's bedroom in scream.

hey!

i was on a sailing trip in the florida keys a number of years back and they
told us that this is true.  they sink old ships to give the reef creatures
something to build on, like a base for their growth.  it creates a new reef
faster and with old sail boats and stuff it is really safe.  plus the fish
have a place to hide.

well, to tell y'all the truth, i was watching the show with 2 of my very good
friends (both lesbians as well) and we were all very irked when we heard a&e
immediately after the lesbian scene.  is that all the indigo girls can be
associated with?  isn't that exactly why i don't want everyone to know i'm
gay?  i want them to know me as the woman i am, not the woman who is
attracted to women.  i'm sorry but yes, i adore the indigo girls as much as
you all do and no, i didn't think it was too cool that virginia woolf came on
at that point.  there are so many more songs that are appropriate for that
situation.  they used a&e simply because they are wel-known lesbians.

hey y'all,

these are just random thoughts.

did you catch that?  sheryl jones suggested the name 'ezekial' for the cat's
name.  okay, really corny, i know.  the song that popped into my head when i
read the plea for ig-related names for cat was naturally, "dead man's
hill"--and most sillily (okay, now i know it's late at night--"making up
adverbs", diane mutters) thought of the name cat's on fire,  "here kitty,
kitty-- cat's-on-fire, cat's-on-fire!!" imagine yelling that around your
neighborhood.

i know it's a serious subject and one of my favorite amy songs, but i just
felt the need to laugh! (you can reply privately and flame me)

this is sad--on party of five, right after i was delighted to hear the
familiar chords of "virginia woolf"  i didn't name that tune until "here's a
young girl..."

nigc, re: tv:  don't forget when, on picket fences, they had two teenage
girls kiss each other in a darkened bedroom as an experiment (like elaine
was probably referring to), or also, on ally mcbeal, ally pretended to be a
lesbian and kissed georgia to try to dissuade a persistent suitor.  ~  i was
watching party of five tonight with two of my cousins, and both are
homophobic, but mae especially, she looked away during the first kiss,
yelled and screamed during the second and covered her eyes declaring, "i am
extremely homophobic."  relationships between people are just that: between
them.

i didn't really connect the lesbianism as an issue on the show, to the scene
where they played a majority of the song, which was:  charlie and kirsten
discussing on the telephone how relieved they were to hear that the tests to
check for recurrence of cancer were negative--

"here's a young girl on a kind of a telephone line through time the voice at
the other end comes like a long-lost friend, so i know i'm alright my life
will come my life will go still i feel it's alright i just got a letter to
my soul when my whole life is on the tip of my tongue empty pages for the no
longer young the apathy of time laughs in my face..."

still smiling inside at hearing ig on television,
diane =)

i don't know...i thought it was a good song for that
particular moment in the show.  and it wasn't like they played it during the
kissing scene or anything.  how many people really know that that song was
sung by ig?  i don't think many.  unless you are really familiar with their
work, as we all are.  the song came on at the end of the show and although
the first part of the scene was with neve, it faded to charlie & kirsten...
in their house with the baby, all content, medical fears put to rest, blah,
blah....hence --> "so i know i'm alright my life will come, my life will go,

i never watch party of five, but you bet your booties that my gf and i were
planted in front of the tv last night!!!

this episode has been expected for some time.  and here in houston, we
didn't hear a bit of controversy.  it seems that ellen really did break the
mold, and now these types of episodes are becoming more common place.
grant it, houston is very pro-gay, and some cities may be more upset then
others.  but, as a whole, it didn't seem that this episode was that big of
a deal.  i dunno...maybe falwell is still too upset over tinky winky to
care.

anyway, if anyone is a fan of wil and grace, you'll see constant gay humor.
why is it that ellen was beaten over it, but wil and grace can get away
with it every week?

my gf stopped watching ellen when ellen odd on being gay.  i kinda did too.
perhaps she shoved it down our throats and risked the humor to make a
point.  wil and grace is extremely funny, imho, and maybe that's why they
succeed.  they concentrate on the humor, and not on being gay.

any thoughts?

peace,
- jen mek

ellen didn't just have a teenage attraction to a lesbian, she came out as one.  i guarantee you that julia is not going to come to the realization that she is a lesbian.  totally different situation.  but equally volatile in a way, since po5 is a teen favorite, and the characters may be seen as role models, far more than ellen might have been.

because w&g isn't *about* being gay, which is what "ellen" became once ellen morgan came out.

i wouldn't say it was "shoved down our throats," but i do think the comedy suffered at the expense of the message.

i agree.  and the fact that the object of julia's adoration was a writer
made it even more appropriate.  i think some people are a bit overly-sensitive.

>maybe the person that decides on what music goes into each show is just a

the show must always have great tunes, if the soundtrack cd is any indication:

01. closer to free - bodeans
02. cruel spell - big bad voodoo daddy
03. without letting go - laurie sargent
04. blue skies - bt
05. love me still - chaka khan
06. stranger than fiction - joe jackson
07. people of earth - syd straw
08. free fallin' - stevie nicks
09. all i really wanna do - holly palmer
10. if you love - howard jones
11. sunshine superman - rickie lee jones
12. it's a hard life wherever you go - nanci griffith
13. send me on my way - rusted root
14. climb on (a back that's strong) - shawn colvin
15. heart of a miracle - bodeans

not exactly the top-40 teeny-bopper crap i'd expect on that show.  i fairly
regularly see messages on the lists i'm on saying "party of five" played
the artist's song.

someone responded to me privately and said that i sounded "defensive" in
the above statement.  let me explain why i asked what i did - i find it
highly offensive when women/lesbians are portrayed as a "vehicle" for
others who merely want to experiment with their sexuality, as if
lesbians, or any gay person, will jump at the chance to have sex with
someone.

as someone else on the list pointed out, gay is about who you are, not
what you do.

i personally hate will and grace. gay representation nonwithstanding, i
think it is just another pointless sitcom. it's very frustrating to look at
tv, a medium which could be used intelligently, and see that everyone just
sort of complacently likes it for what it is and doesn't expect more and
therefore no one works to make it better.
and just for the record, although i liked elle, i thought it was a fairly
silly show. but in my opinion it imporves after she came out, it seemed to
gain focus and the humor became sharper.

i was making a mix tape to work out to (i'm sure i'm the only one in the gym who
gets pumped up by folk) and was going through my cds last night and found a
cities' 97 sampler. a local radio station that puts out some great live cd
collections. well, i had totally forgot that one of the samplers had a live
in-studio performance of three hits from '92. i wasn't sure if this is going to
be on the collection that neil is putting together, but if it isn't, i'll send a
copy for volume 4. let me know....

and as for will and grace...i rarely watch tv but that's one show my mom and i
love. she tapes it and i go over to place to watch it together.

hey.

on 31st october 1992 ig played a concert in the riverbank theatre in
dublin.  were you there?  a&e were surprised that it was a seated theatre,
they thought it would be a club, and kept encouraging people to come up
nearer the stage and stand!  the audience was very mixed, with very few
irish persons there, as it wasn't very well advertised, i think it was an
end-of-tour concert.  well, if you were there, just thought you might be
interested to hear that it is no longer a theatre - the department of
justice has commandeered it, and it is now being used as a court.

fare thee well.

hey there...

i don't believe the ig is played only when there is a lesbian theme (or any
gay theme for that matter).
i remember seeing an re-run episode of party of 5 a while back and they
played "mystery" and there wasn't a slight hint of a lesbian/gay theme going
on...
i also remember watching a snowboarding video when they played "shame on
you" in the background to boarders thrashing on a mountain..
oh, and even though there wasn't any ig music, there is a poster of the
girls (rop poster) in "scream"....  do you see a connection to neve campbell
and ig here?  hmmmm...

later.

well hey now! how convenient! now i see how good marine garbage is for the environment...

it's just amazing that all those fish were able to do so well for all those millions of years before
we came to the rescue, with those much-needed steel ships. and marine life must be really lucky
also, to get all the diesel, and other toxic materials, that ooze from sunken ships for several
years. maybe now, i can rethink my ethics about littering in the wilderness, or city parks. perhaps
all those "litter bugs" i've been annoyed with, are really helping mother nature.

we don't have to peel off too much pretty veneer to see the ugly truth just behind it. chevron saves
millions of dollars by not dismantling and removing those defunct oil rigs. the same is probably
also true regarding the deliberate sinking of large vessels at sea to avoid having to take them
somewhere else. sure, fish "hide" in them--the things have been dropped right in the middle of the
fishes' living room!

i was just asking myself "what does this have to do with ig?" nothing, directly, but when i consider
the *messages* in their music, and also the kinds of organizations amy & emily endorse in their
space at http://www.epiccenter.com/epiccenter/indigogirls/artistlinks.qry
i see this as relevant.

preface:  this is all imho.  :)

i love ellen and i did stop watching after awhile after she came out b/c it
wasn't funny anymore.  but on lifetime i've been catching all the episodes i
missed.  i think what happened is ellen felt the pressure to deliver a show
that actually dealt with being gay - the problem is comedy is not the ideal
forum to do this in.  and in order for ellen to effectively deal with the
issue, she needed a girlfriend and she wanted this relationship to be
serious and portray this relationshipi in a positive light.  all bad
ingredients for comedy - especially ellen style.  if you think about it,
throughout every other season, part of the humor is ellen's bad dates her
mother's nit picking about them and just her general nueroticism (sp?).
once she gets a relationship and is happy and can't poke fun at the other
person as much - she doesn't know what to do - too many ingredients have
been taken out.  but, i think that ellen was coming back around to comedy -
problem was the episodes that were funny didn't have her girlfriend in them
- since she was the ground breaker (or at least had been labeled as such)
she felt she had to deal with it seriously.  and actually deal with it.  but
can you imagine the backlash from the gay community of she has a series of
stereotypical lesbian relationships that don't work out well for some
superficial reason?  we don't think about it as much, but the men ellen
joked about were very stereotypical and often with some very superficial
flaws (guy that was a bad kisser).  will and grace didn't have the pressure
that ellen was under - not the same pressure to deliver humor and not the
same pressure to actually deal with the issue.  maybe she took it a little
too far, but there were signs near the end that given another season she
probably would have been able to bring the humore back.  whoops - i'm sorry-
i didn't mean this to become a rant.  :)  i've just had this conversation a
lot.  :)  anyway.

well, i was driving home from the san fernando valley yesterday afternoon,
on the 101 freeway south here in l.a., and listening to star 98.7.  just
after commercial break, the afternoon dj, ryan seacrest, started talking,
but beneath his voice and a sudden inopportune bit of static, i heard some
familiar piano chords . . . yes . . . they were playing "baby don't you
break my heart slow!"

i cheered . . . i yelled . . . i whooped . . . i nearly drove into the car
in the next lane!  okay, that was bad.  but since my car tape player is
broken, making a tape of the song (bought the cd just *for* it) won't do
me much good.  i was about to call up the station and thank them for
playing it (and whine at ryan seacrest just a bit because he said the song
was by vonda but didn't mention emily).  unfortunately some other guy got
through first and spent ten minutes yakking with ryan about that insane
high-speed . . . winnebago chase?

ah well.  they'll play it again.  and then i'll call, point out to them
that emily's in the song, and throw in a little "it's nice to hear one of
the indigo girls on your station . . . you should play them too
sometimes!" plug while i'm at it . . . nothing like a little ig advocacy.

        battle on,
shanie (who would crawl 20 miles over broken glass if emily so
much as sang one note in her direction)

hey everyone,

i really think jen is on some kind of drugs when she watches will and grace.
i've sat down to watch the show a couple of times (once in the beginning, and
another more recent episode), and found the writing on that show just
horrible.  everything that comes out of someones mouth has to be so
"over-the-top" funny!  everything having to do with the gay guy always has

something to do with being gay!  lame, lame, lame.  i put will and grace in
the same category as "brother's keeper". another dog of a show.

as for party of 5, i love this show! go figure.  i'm a 25 year old
heterosexual who, at times, can't wait for wednesday nights.  i'm addicted.
so, when virginia woolf came on, i almost flipped!  so far, this show played
my 2 favorite artists during an episode: 1) liz phair 2) indigo girls. now,
if they only play a little luscious jackson, i'll be set for life!

is everything still on track for ig's upcoming release?  i heard early 2000?
is this true?  can't wait already.

ok..

i'm going now.

back to lurking,
brian

i totally agree with you sheryl...reading that made me sick...i don't know
the context, but from that, it sounded like some pathetic wannabe critic,
taking a quick and easy shot at women by putting down their music.
yuck...
sometimes, i wonder how we'll ever be able to reach all those people out

hey all,

at some level, i have to agree--the lumping of "girl bands" as one
indistiguishable entity trivializes the differences between groups.  but at
the same time, i've been known on a few occasions to lump all those "boy
bands" into one big ol' heap--not just the matchbox 20, third eye blind,
sugar ray's of the world, but some of the more talented musicians that i
might hear on the radio or at a friend's but resist buying...i can count on
one hand the number of "male" acts i have on cd on one hand...so i'm as
guilty as anyone.  i think there is still far more of a gender schism in
music that i'd like to see.  but its a matter of perception.  if a radio
station has a "best female band" contest, is that empowering or trivializing
(or just a stunt for publicity)?  if women artists only get compared to
women artists or men to men, then does that imply some fundamental
difference, or just a limitation on the side of the comparer...if i find a
part of me in the music listening to a woman that i don't find listening to
a man, then i'm limited, too.  or just finding myself in the music?  or
women who sing but don't play an instrument--i find myself banging my head
against that stereotype--the "deer in headlights" with the shaker
thing...(or am i the only one who feels it)?   i hate the generalization,
but at the same time, i look at the guys i play music with and i, and i hate
the whole notion of being the chick w/o the instrument (i play sometimes,
but mostly sing)...how much is doing what you do and just saying "to heck
with what people think"?...i am rambling so far off topic and am somehow
hopefully making sense...there's a whole gamut of "girl musician" stuff
still out there...i think that was my point.  maybe.

peace all,
shel

just wondering if anyone has seen or heard about this.  it's kind of
relevant.  it has indigo content and with the amount of untapped musical
talent we have on our list i would think there's also a few talented
actors among our mix as well.

taken following is from the may 02, 1999 edition of the duluth
news-tribune
        article by chris casey

<for any northlander who's ever wanted to appear in a movie --
and missed out on that big ''iron will'' event a few years back
-- here's your chance.

the makers of ''chasing indigo,'' an adventure comedy that will be
filmed near detroit lakes, want aspiring actors to audition this week at
the duluth radisson hotel.

filmmakers want to fill up to 60 speaking roles, mostly for characters
whom the two main characters encounter during their road adventure. a
couple leading roles are open as well.

although there is no assurance minor-role actors will be paid, the
filmmakers say the acting experience is helpful.

carol brook-marino, one of the screenwriters, said american indians are
especially needed. the lead characters go on reservations, but they meet
plenty of white people,
too,'' she said.

the minor roles, which will require about a day's work, include
cashiers, casino security guards, reporters, waitresses, concert roadies
and ''rednecks,'' brook-marino said.

most of the film will be shot this summer on the white earth
reservation, about 20 miles north of detroit lakes.  a car-accident
scene is scripted for duluth, brook-marino said. she hopes to land gov.
jesse ventura for a bit part in that scene.

''i just gotta call his agent and figure that out,'' said brook-marino,
who earned a teaching degree at bemidji state university before moving
to los angeles to pursue a
film career. while in minnesota, she spent a year working on the white
earth reservation.

brook-marino wrote the film with andrew roa, who will appearin an
upcoming woody allen film.
the filmmakers also are holding open auditions in fargo, n.d.  closed
auditions will take place in minneapolis and chicago.

''we want to see what talent is here,'' brook-marino said of duluth.
''if we have everyone here except for a (celebrity) name, we're ok with
that.''

the film involves a pair of women who find $2 million in mobsters' loot
and stow it, in a moment of haste, on a vehicle that happens to be the
indigo girls' tour bus. the
bus then rolls off on the honor the earth concert tour, a real-life
indigo girls tour that stops at indian reservations. the pair of women,
one an american indian, give chase and encounter an array of offbeat
characters on their travels.>

also... if you go:
the auditions are being held this week at the duluth radisson hotel.
people must be at least age 20 and should bring a photgraph of
themselves.  snapshots are acceptable.
each audition will take about five minutes.  they're scheduled for 1 to
8 p.m tuesday (5/4/99) and 1 to 5 p.m. friday (5/7/99).

for more information, call carol brook-marino at (218) 573-9600.

sorry so late on this, just got it yesterday!

        take care all!

i guess this seems like a pretty good deal (although i do like the canadian

hey, y'all.......

i think there is a tendency in the minds of many (probably the majority) of
males to trivialize the thoughts, concerns, and contributions of women in
general.......dismissing the broad spectrum of women writers so off-handedly
is definitely indicative of the writer's lack of respect........

there is a lot of separatism these days.......it seems like everywhere you
look people are being placed in opposing
camps.......race......gender.......sexual orientation.....ethnic
origin.....religion.......all means of dividing the human race instead of
bringing us together.......all too often profit is the motivating
factor.......

music is the one universal language......it has the power to unite....to
inspire......to reach the depths of our souls.......and to bring us to
emotional peaks......it can bring beauty to the dreariest setting.......it
can bring tranquility to chaos......at its best, it is love in one of it's
truest forms.....

i hate type-casting and pigeonholing.......the aforementioned writer is just
putting his own ignorance on display.......consider the source........

van morrison has created a lot of music that i love, but he has also been
quoted as saying that he has kept re-writing the same six songs throughout
his career........but even he would have to admit that there is a marvelous
pool of creativity lurking 'way below the radio'........

wednesday i happened upon a wonderful website dedicated to music by women
called harmony music:

http://www.rahul.net/hrmusic/

i also chanced upon a very intriguing artist.........ingrid karklins:

http://www.hear.com/passion/

if you visit the site, be sure to check out her writings as well as her
music......

hi ev'r body,

i found this sort of amusing.
last night, the new york lesbian comedian julie goldman did some
stand-up and sang some songs in front of an intimate knox college crowd.
one of her jokes was trying to answer the age-old 'what do lesbians do
in bed question', which evolved into 'what do lesbians do together'.
she said something like, 'people think...we go off to our log cabin
(some lumberjack reference), sit in front of an open fire, paint oil
paintings and sing indigo girls' songs.'
and then, at the end of the show, her alter ego, the folk-song singin'
"indigo etheridge" did two songs, "monogamous slut" and "goin' down",
for us.
if you ever have a chance to see/your school also is getting julie
goldman, i would recommend her. some of her jokes even made really jaded
people blush and giggle, which at knox college, is a verrry good thing.

truly,
mel w

you know i've been watching party of five forever, and have loved the show,
and i have always thought that the music consultants (or researchers) for the
show have always done a fantastic job.  this indigo thing is just icing on
the cake.

who remembers when kristen left for chicago after charlie bagged the
wedding.  they chose a mary chapin carpenter song that left me running
for my tissues....(and i'm not one to cry at this stuff easily!).

in the past they've had a ton of great music on ....nanci griffith, mcc,
paula
cole (before she was really hip) are the ones that come to mind right off the
bat.
.....now we can add indigos to that list!

happy day to all those reading!

you have a right to your opinion, but please don't be so quick to dismiss equally valid opinions.  i enjoy w&g too; i think the cast is great, and the writing is strong.  you're welcome to disagree, if you can do so without telling me i'm stupid or on drugs.

well, first of all, there are two gay men featured in the show.  if you're referring to the flamer, jack, i've heard this complaint, but i don't think it's legitimate because i know gay men like him!  and i know more conservative gay men like will too.  i think it's a good thing that both are represented.

i have to agree with deb here.  i think it's kind of cool to see two
different representations of the gay community.

what's really amusing is seeing that ad that has jack in it and he's
asking for some woman's phone number and he's using really cheezy lines.
i first saw that ad right after i saw billy hollywood's screen kiss.  talk
about range of acting! ;)

about po5--i've never been a big fan of the show, but not only have they
played ig and other fabulous artists, they've also played dar a couple of
times.

oh, i just wanted to take a snipe at any trekkies who might be out
there! don't mind me...
we've all discussed the political, moral, social, and legal
implications of this - but the question remains, "how about the kiss
itself?"  scale of 1-10.  (1-everybody screams and runs away,
10-casablanca) raise your hands high!  go!  go!  ;)

my apologies for the wasted bandwidth, but i couldn't think of better way to
reach so many people i have at least one thing in common with.

memorial day weekend i will be moving from the northwest suburbs of chicago
to the new jersey shore.  while i have tons of family there, i will have few
friends, & that's why i'm posting.  i'm looking for folks in the ny-nj-philly
area to hang with... you know, intellectual conversation, bargain shop, play
poker, do lunch.  this is strictly a call for friendship.  if yer interested,
email me privately.

        *mutters*
and didn't anyone watch that second-season episode of xena, "the
quest," with xena and gabrielle and the infamous "the kiss?"  (yeah, yeah,
so she was in autolycus's body at the time, but they *did* show lucy and
renee for about a second in the dreamscape before they faded to the "real
world" shot of renee and bruce campbell . . . oh please, i *had* to say
it.)
in all seriousness, i wish that every time two women on tv kissed,
it wouldn't be made into such an <insert fanfare and movie-premiere
spotlights here> event.  the more we treat these moments on tv as
something out of the ordinary, the longer we propagate the idea that it's
unusual, or different, or unorthodox . . . you get the idea.
i have real problems with the advertising for things like this--it
smacks of sensationalism to me, and i hate that.  because with that,
someone will always find the connotation that television is breaking a
taboo and doing something "wrong" (intentional capitalization) in showing
two women kissing, for example.  don't misunderstand me; i'm overjoyed
at the very positive portrayals of homosexual characters on tv shows
lately, and i think they're treating the issue of julia exploring her
sexuality with taste and sensitivity.  i just have a major problem with
how they're playing it up in the ads.
it reminds me of a recent debate i was having on a couple of xena
fan mailing lists, regarding the well-known "lesbian subtext" between the
two lead characters on the show.  quite a few people (myself included)
observed that the subtext has been especially heavy, even blatant, this
season, thus giving rise to the fan mantra, "it's not subtext, it's
maintext."  it was also noted that the subtext was played up the most
during sweeps month.  the subtext sells--the nielsen ratings showed that.
and while i do love it, i hate that it's being exploited in this way.
but i'm rambling now.  in a nutshell, what i'm trying to say is
that i'm all for the positive portrayal of homosexuality on television, be
it implied (as on xena) or directly stated (as on dawson's creek--and
incidentally, i thought the story arc about jack was *extremely*
well-done--and now on party of five).  i just feel that the longer we make
a big, special deal out of it, the longer we allow it to be seen as a
marketing gimmick or a publicity stunt.  and i don't feel that's very
conducive to affecting the public's mindset about how "normal," if you
will, we are.

        battle on,

although it doesn't actually mention the ig contribution to the album, i thought it might be of interest to some to read this review of the clash tribute album taken from the british newspaper "the guardian"....

various artists : burning london (epic)

(2 stars)

the clash spawned many unlikely disciples, of whom 15 fashioned this tribute album. "unlikely" is the operative word, for anyone hearing no doubt's ska mutilation of hateful (with billy idol on backing vocals) or ice cube's gangsta reading of should i stay or should i go? will wonder what the fuss is about. rather better is pato banton & ranking roger's sun splashed rock the casbah. this old assemblage imparts a bargain basement feel and fails to capture the commitment that, for many, defined punk. (review by caroline sullivan).

---------------------

i guess one of the main reasons that the ig weren't is, as in many instances, they aren't really known over here, while artists like no doubt and ice cube obviously are.

there's all kinds of information about the rainbow family at
www.welcomehome.org.

the national gathering is supposed to be in pennsylvania somewhere,
always held july 1-7... they won't know exactly where until probably
late may, early june.

of course, that track is not on the us version. :-)

cdnow <http://cdnow.com/from=sr-20927> has 3 different versions of the cd, of which the us version has the least tracks.  from sound of the reviews, that may be a good thing. :-)

i'm branch  feb 16 - march 31, and i'm booked.  please either
try another branch, or wait for another time.  if you have
something really good to trade, we may be able to work one out
after i'm done with branching.  i'm looking for low-generation
early stuff(<= '89).
