hey all,

i just wanted to put in another plug for "women's work."  i picked it up at
finders about a year ago, and it's really good -- introduced me to vonda,
catie curtis, eliza gilkyson, barbara kessler, ferron, and all the others.
i definitely recommend it!

on a personal note, i finally graduated!!  now it's off to chicago for 3
weeks to do voluntary service, and then my new job as an editor!  so if any
of you'ns live in chicago and want to show me around, that'd be great --
greg, you're there, right?  anyway, let me know if there's anyone around...

shannon :)

hey kids,

i was cd browsing today and came upon a boot called "ten years of
friendship". it kicks my booty. it's got all kinds of live performances of
new to old, dating back to ctf, etc. at the little five points in 1989 and
as recent as "blister in the sun" and the tom morello remix of  sys. does
anyone else know anything about this?

hey folks,

joanna asked re: "gone again":
>does anyone know the story behind this song and when it was written
>obviously its about a trip to australia - and it was performed here on
>their feb 1998 tour. i jsut wonder if it was written then, or whether it
>was from a previous aust trip.

it was written when the girls were here last - the first
performance ever was on feb 27 '98, at the second sydney
ig show at the state theatre.  after they played it amy
said something like, "emily's never heard that song
before!"

>and does anyone know what the rainbow room or the melbourne wrecking crew
>refer to?

someone told me that the rainbow room used to be a club
in melbourne, but i don't know that for a fact...

happy happy all,

the indigo girls finish up new album

forthcoming indigo girls album to feature me'shell ndegeocello,
luscious jackson and sinead musicians

the indigo girls are dotting the i's and crossing the g's on
their long-awaited follow-up to 1997's shaming of the sun,
which will soon be finished but not released until after the
duo begins its stint on the final lilith fair. according to
producer john reynolds, the girls "wanted to [create] a level
between the new technology and retain everything they've done
[in the past]" on the new material.  "first and foremost,
they're players," he says.  "when they pick up the guitar and
sing together, that's them."

reynolds, who's produced material for sinead o'connor and adam
ant, was originally only supposed to produce half of the new
indigo girls album in a london studio, but recent sessions
with producer malcolm burn (john mellencamp, better than ezra)
didn't work out so reynolds is back on board to finish up the
record in atlanta. thus far, the duo has completed thirteen
tracks for the still-untitled album. r&b artist me'shell
ndegeocello and sinead o'connor musician claire kenny
contribute bass to several songs, while luscious jackson's
kate schellenbach and reynolds collaborator caroline dale will
add drums and strings respectively.

one song, "faye tucker," which was recorded during the original
london sessions, was written about karla faye tucker, who was
executed by lethal injection in texas on february 3, 1998, for
the murders of her ex-boyfriend and his companion.

the album, due out sept. 14, will begin the mixing process in
two weeks and the girls will begin their lilith tour of duty on
august 19 in tinley park, ill.

my recommendation would actually be to stay away from it, because
everything on the disc is ripped off of promos or other bootlegs. the 1998
lilith promos, which were the source for the sots tracks on "ten years",
are easy enough to find on ebay if there isn't a good source for promos in
your local area, and my personal thing with bootlegs is that if i buy them
at all, i try to buy the ones which seem to have been recorded and
distributed for love of music rather than for money. anyway, if you ask
around there's most likely somebody in the fan community who could tape
all of its tracks for you.

hello all!
i just had to share my morning with you....waking up in a fire station
(that's where i work and we had a fairly quiet night thankyou!), the phone
rang and it was my "ex" saying, "quick!! turn on the mountain, the indigo
girls are being interviewed!! turn it on!!"  (the mountain, as some of you
know, it the local seattle radio station kmtt fm)
so up i jumped, out to my truck (not the big red one), to listen.  sure
enough, amy was being interviewed by the local dj.  it was a phone
interview and only amy was present.  the time was 6:55 am so i think alot
of people missed the broadcast.  amy chatted about the new album coming out
in the fall.  the dj asked if she thought the new album would be a
different or new sound compared with the shaming album.  amy responded that
she felt it wasn't a "huge" stretch away from the last album, but that the
drummer from sinead o'connor's band had a big influence on the sound.....it
will have a "groove" aspect to it!! she described emiliy's songs as being
"upbeat."  the album won't be available until after the bumbershoot show,
but it will be finished by then.  (ok!!)
also, amy chatted about the bumbershoot festival where she and emily and
"some band" will be appearing for a performance here in seattle. she said
the show will be a "mix" of new tracks, as well as the older favorites...
she's really excited about coming back to seattle.  "in fact," she said, "i
was planning on coming out on my own anyway, to go to some of the shows
(bumbershoot) myself."  the dj said something about how she'd have to go in
a disguise to wander the streets of the seattle center, and amy said, "oh,
i don't think i'd need to do that."      okay....!!
so, that was the gyst of the interview.  i'm not the greatest at
transcribing, but i thought i'd share my fun morning experience.

anyway, 2 questions:  i am semi-new to the san jose/sf bay area and
wondering who on the list lives around here, e-mail me privately.  and my
other question contains the igc:  i have been hearing about the new songs on
the new album and wondered who has boots of them.  i have 25 or so boots i
could trade, but i'll make a list for anyone interested.  otherwise i could
just send a blank tape & postage.  i'm dying to hear the new stuff!

hey everybody,
my computer has kind of been at of whack the last few days so i'm not sure
if this has been discussed lately.  anyways, this weekend my ex calls me up
and tells me that she just heard go on the radio (which would be 99x here in
georgia).  i  was like "no f---ing way."  of course i was flipping out and
called the radio station to request it.  they played it a few minutes later
and it is excellent.  then just on a happy side note i turned the radio on
last night and shame on you was on and then today, while i was at work, on
my break i heard galileo.  so has anyone else heard go on the radio yet?

wow--it would be a very cool thing if go were to get airplay...i think it's
one of their better songs, and (unlike so much of the watered down hype
that's now passing as good music) actually says something...

there was a lot more ig activity to discuss 2 years ago -- look for things to pick up with the summer tour dates and the release of the new album!

just to fill you all in, i forgot to say this before, the reason why they
are playing it so much is because they are promoting "no boundaries", which
as we all should know by now, go is on that.  they are giving away free
copies to the 14th, or whatever number they choose, caller.  ok, that's all
for now,

i bought the 2 lilith cd's required from ticketmaster for my shot at better
than average tickets and was very disappointed, at least the recordings were
rockin'. now i need two tickets to the atlanta shows, either day, and will
pay whatever they are worth to the holder. i'll get stuck paying a scalper
top dollar, i'd rather pay it to someone on the list, you know, keep it in
the community. anyway, if anyone out there can help me please e-mail me
privately. muchos gracias!!

                  indigo girls discuss new album

                  june 1, 1999, 4:00 pm pt

                                     the indigo girls are nearing
                                     the last phase of the
                                     recording process for their
                                     seventh studio album in
                                     atlanta, where emily saliers,
                                     one half of the longstanding
                                     folk duo, admits a little
                                     musical adversity can
                                     sometimes fuel the best
                                     sonic fires.

                                     "amy [ray] was talking
                                     about making a strictly
acoustic record but i didn't want to do that," says saliers. "a

lot of times amy and i are just in different places musically
and it all just comes together in the studio."

also helping those sounds come together is new producer
john reynolds (the girls recently parted ways with original
producer malcolm burn due to "philosophical differences,"
according to saliers) and the former sinead o'connor
knob-turner (and father of her child) has expanded on the
loop-heavy, electrified sound of "shed your skin" from
1997's shaming of the sun. saliers also promises less
                  dueling voices.

"it's not a drastic departure, but i think the songs are more
mature," says saliers. "in some ways, from when we first
started, we did all that interweaving harmony and each of
our voices was practically all over the other's song -- it's a
little less of that. we have sort of polarized musically."

several guests permeate the girls' sound on the album,
including luscious jackson drummer kate schellenbach,
ex-breeder josephine wiggs, middle eastern dance queen
natacha atlas of transglobal underground, and r&b groove
singer me'shell ndegeocello (allstar, april 8). on one track,
"faye tucker," the girls found themselves in the middle of an
                  international hodgepodge of sounds.

"it was a droney rock and roll song, and then john got some
of these players -- caroline dale on cello and carol isaacs
on accordion -- to write these irish jigs through it. and then
natacha comes in at the end. the first thing my mom said
was, 'how are you gonna recreate that onstage?' i'm like,
                  'we're not.'"

the girls have cut 13 tracks for possible inclusion on the
album, one of which ("go") appears in a live incarnation on
epic records' upcoming benefit album for kosovo, no
boundaries. saliers also reports that several unorthodox
instruments and sounds are finding their way into the record
as well, including a couple of songs that are appalachian in
nature, one written and performed entirely on bouzouki, and a
ballad featuring a marvin gaye, "sexual healing"-era 808
                  beat box on it.

the girls are due to mix the as-yet-untitled album by the
end of june, with a tentative release date on epic records
set for sept. 14. meanwhile, the girls will join up with the
lilith fair tour on aug. 19 in tinley park, ill., followed by a
fall
tour of theaters and sheds across the u.s.

i heard it in the car (i couldn't even tell you what station it was) and
turned the station when the voice in the backseat said "that's emily -
turn it back - is this a new song?"  so i turned it back and it didn't
hit me what this song was until vonda sang, but it is really nice.

not singing on each others' songs?  no dueling voices?
>>>>>>

(gasp!)  i'm a little nervous too.  what she was saying about earlier songs
- the other's voice was all over the other person's song - that was the
great part of it.  i always like hearing, say an 'emily' song and hearing
amy sing a verse or two.  i think trading verses make for some awesome songs
(i'm blanking on specifics right now - but you get my drift here, i
think...)  it's just real hard to be optimistic here when some things that
have worked so well in the past might be changing a little bit.  of course,
it's still going to be a & e up there on stage and i'm sure whatever they
write will sound great!  duh?!

sys wasn't my favorite song at all & sots wasn't my favorite album (not even
close actually) - but when the girls start touring, we're bound to get
plenty of acoustic shows (they always talk about staying near their roots,
right?) and that sound with just the two of them will always be just heaven.
also, one last thought: taking 'go' for example - originally it was all amy,
and no emily.  but now that emily is familiar with the song and they've done
some studio work on it - emily's part is pretty substantial in the song.
the last two times i've heard 'go' with the both of them, i thought it was a
great song by the both of them.  emily made a great song even better!

if they are feeling so different musically and aren't singing on each
others' songs, why should they be together?
>>>>>>

i want to be the first one to eloquently say my feelings on this.
noooooooooooooooooo!  it won't happen.  besides the event of my blossoming
musical career, in which amy might want to sing with me, this will never
happen.  despite the girls changing & evolving musically, they still have a
lot in common - and i think these changes are so very minimal to the many
great things they have going together.  the only thing that could happen
might be the occasional side projects (ie., j. garcia) that can help them
explore different avenues ig might not be able to pursue.  (the following
post was imho & fyi.  unauthorized use of this material is prohibited by
law) <hehe>

i feel the same way, but i have to say that after hearing all of go on the
radio and not just some 30 second clip i'm keeping an open mind.  the one
word i can use that really describes the song is 'rockin'.  it made me get
off my feet and dance around the room.  then again, this is only one song
out of many...........  as i am sitting here thinking, who even knows if it
will be the same on the album as on no boundaries.  ok, i think this is
where my mind starts to ramble so i will leave it at that.  ok, so i lied,
here is one more thought.  for all of you out there who went to the variety
playhouse didn't you notice how when either amy or emily would play their
songs the other one would just kind of back away.  i hope the whole no
dueling voices thing isn't as drastic as it was that night.  ok everyone,
don't panic to much.

wow an actual new thread!!!!!

hey guys!!!

ok, the new album that we have been waiting for is
coming (yea haw!!!) and the first hints of content are
begining to strea through the media cracks and here we
are engaging in our playful banter....

personally, i was really excited about the concept of
an acoustic album but then again nothing thrills my
soul like the strains of amy's voice raging with
brutal raw emotions over an electric guitar but ooooh
now that  think of it that quiet little girl thing
that she does when singing blood and fire or the
begining of touch me fall send shivers over me
too...you know, it really wouldnt matter what they
sang or how they sang it i would probably love it.

i do agree with the concept of them sing each other's
songs....i think it is an important mixture of style
and talent that makes them the "indigo girls".

but as we love them we love them through it all...

i would write more but i got to run

later!

hey all,

i, for one, am looking forward to seeing (er...hearing) the new directions
the new album seems to be taking.  i love the girls' earlier albums, and
their harmonies taught me more about singing than any music class ever
could, but its also been nice to see the evolution of their style(s) over
the past 10+ years.  instead of sticking with the style or "sound" that got
them known, they've branched out into other instruments, styles, song
topics, etc., and found ways to weave them back into the mix of "two girls
on guitar".  i think that's a lot more interesting that sitting back and
settling into what's "comfortable".

i think that some of us (and i'm as guilty as anyone--when sots first came
out, i wrote a two page letter to a friend detailing what i didn't like
about each song...and then i listened some more and they grew on me) want
for their music to stay one way...at the risk of stepping on a few toes,
i'll say this...they have given us all this wonderful music over their
careers, and for this i'm appreciative.  if they went off and decided to
make a techno album, because that's the direction they wanted to go, i'd
respect that as their artistic decision.  if they went off and didn't make
another album, i'd (begrudgingly, because i'm just darn selfish and want to
hear their music forever) respect that, too.

that said, i don't think this whole "polarity" thing is so bad (or even so
different from their musical collaborativity earlier on in their
careers...thus the whole notion of an amy song (or an amy person) vs. an
emily song/emily person.  i did find it interesting that it was emily who
vetoed the idea of an all-acoustic album--who would have thought that ten
years ago?

in any case, i've spent enough work time rambling.

take care,
shelley

otoh, i've been listening to alt.country: whiskeytown, old 97's, lucinda williams, joe henry, ana egge, gillian welch, dave alvin, steve earle, josh rouse, randy scruggs, the jayhawks, wilco...  if "gone again" doesn't make the cut i'm gong to be upset!

there are dozens of great examples, not just harmonies either (they've drifted away from those in recent years).  the recent moments that spring to mind for me are amy's contributions to gotm ("i must say around some corner i can sense a resting place... i'm gonna love you good and strong...") and po2 ("smarter than the tricks played on your heart...").  i'm sure you emilyfans can identify plenty of great emily moments in amy songs, too. :-)  but it's important to note even if they aren't contributing as much *vocally* to each others' songs, that doesn't mean that they aren't collaborating in other ways.

to the contrary... many of us have said that we were looking forward to an acoustic album, which would be a departure at this stage!  instead, they've said they're expanding on sys-like production.  now, sys is probably my favorite song on sots, but i don't want an album-full of it, that's for certain!

agreed.  one of the reasons my enthusiasm for them has sustained while others have come and gone is that i can always count on them to do *whatever they do* well, and with everything they have to give.  i've already gotten enough great, diverse music out of them that if i didn't like any of the future directions they took, i would still have a lifetime worth of enjoyment.

it sounds like this album is going to be a mixture of a lot of things.....an
all acoustic album was vetoed by emily, but i'm sure there will be enough on
there.  there's always one or two rockin' songs by amy, and i'm excited to
hear emily play the piano as well as some of the other instruments they have
learned to play in their spare time so regardless it should be a great
record, b/c it's by a&e of course!  but i do hope that all this stuff about
no singing on the other's song is just a little smoke b/c that's another
things that makes the ig the ig, you know?   i'm sure they will have a good
mix of the usual as well as branch out.

what it takes to cross the great divide, seems more than all the courage i
can muster up inside...but...the prize is always worth the rocky ride!

in a message dated 99-06-03 16:43:02 edt, you write:

> for all of you out there who went to the variety
>  playhouse didn't you notice how when either amy or emily would play their
>  songs the other one would just kind of back away.  i hope the whole no
>  dueling voices thing isn't as drastic as it was that night.  ok everyone,
>  don't panic to much.

i really don't think it was meant to be that drastic.  you have to realize
that they were still learning those songs..............  the most drastic
"step back" was one of emily's new ones called "andy".   they had just
starting working on it in the studio a few days prior to the show, and amy
said she was going to be the backup band, simply because she didn't know it
that well yet.    and on the new songs that have been around a while (go and
sister come to mind right away), emily made major vocal contributions to both
of those.   that was one of the things that stuck in my mind was how much she
added to an already amazing song, with her new vocals.

and on emily's other new one "cold beer & remote control" - they did indeed
have the "dueling vocals" that emily seems to be talking about (while emily
is singing one verse, amy's singing another at the same time in contrast).
at least that's what i'm interpreting as "dueling vocals" - i could be wrong.
amy played another song solo, but again, it looked more like emily just
didn't know it yet - it definitely had an appalachian mountain music type
feel to it.  it was a lot of fun to hear.   it'll be interesting to see if it
makes it on the cd.

i wouldn't worry too much - from what we've heard so far of the new material
(at the two recent shows, here in atlanta, and nashville), it still has that
magic.  i think everyone is going to be greatly and pleasantly surprised.

i have to say, i was a bit shocked to see the interview with emily
saying that they were going for a more hard-edged sound, especially in
light of their earlier statements about doing a more acoustic album.
and while i really like sots, i think my favorite unexpected rendition
of any song they've written recently was an acoustic guitar duo version
of "shed your skin" that they played in phoenix right before they took
off for "down under" -- it pulled that song into a whole new realm for
me, moving deep into rock-n-roll, but pulling back from a lot of the
wailing guitars that they've been experimenting with lately.

(when amy just stood at the mike and silenced her guitar and sang with
great emphasis "i've got this celebration, too", and gestured to the

theater in which they were singing, i got all goosebumpy.  i still do,
just typing about it now.)

((after that version, amy said something like "well, that was
interesting", indicating perhaps dissatisfaction with the rendition.  i
wanted to run up on stage and grab her by the shoulders and say, "that
was spine-tinglingly amazing!"))

anyway, back to the point...

there are certain artists that i have grown to trust over the years.
ig, u2, tori amos (although i felt a bit dismayed by boys for pele)...
these artists are constantly trying out new things, pushing the
envelope, and growing their craft.  whatever the next turn may be in the
mysterious and amazing ride that ig has taken me on thus far, i'm ready
for it, and will welcome it with open arms.

hey, before everybody gets all worked up about the girls not singing on
each other's songs (maybe a little late, cause i'm on digest)...

i didn't see anything in that interview about them absolutely not singing
on each other's songs. emily was quoted as saying that there was going to
be a *little less* of that [dueling voices]--she didn't say they were
singing solo on any of the songs. of course, that doesn't mean there's
going to be vocal harmonies on all the songs, but i think she would have
said something if they were going to be each singing alone on the whole
album.

i also like the dueling voices (interesting mental image there...), and i
love sys (incidentally, flame me through private email, i am so sick of
shame on you that it'll be years before i can stand to hear it again) and
scooter boys, and cut it out. i see it as amyrock and emilyroll--amy does
a lot of stuff that makes you want to go out and volunteer somewhere to
fix the world, or scream in rage at the top of your lungs, or get up and
mosh or something. emily does a lot of stuff that makes you want to dance
happy, sing at the top of your lungs so the whole world can hear galileo
(you never get stranger looks from people than when you're walking down a
street in downtown chicago singing at the top of your lungs with your
walkperson--try it without the walkperson and nobody will come anywhere
near you, it's a great mugger-repellent), or just, like, do something!

on a different subject, (the attack of the killer b-sides--if you haven't
gotten this, do! it rocks!) what is "philadelphia" that "i don't wanna
talk about it" is on? is it the movie soundtrack or something? pardon my
ignorance....and where on earth did the "wild wild party at the loquat
tree" come from? sounds like a camp song. i mean, i like it a lot, but
their adult voices are really weird with it--i'd expect children's voices,
and instead you get amy's leather alto voice and emily's mature
mezzo-soprano, and wtf?

anyway...wow. sorry this was so long...

hey....another question.....
is anyone going to newport from the cleveland area (jill, how about you?

or at least is anyone gonna be taking i-80 or i-480 through the area?  i
live about 2 minutes from i-480 and the off ramp from i-80 onto i-480 is
about 3 minutes from my exit......
of course, i doubt my 'rents would be thrilled w/ me travelling w/ someone
from the internet (ug, stupid 50 year old child molesters ruin it for the
rest of us!)....but its worth a shot, i *know* they won't let me go

hey y'all.....

i was particularly taken aback by emily's comment that "each of our voices
was practically all over the other's song -- it's a little less of that. we
have sort of polarized musically."

visions of the polarization between the various beatles during the filming
of "let it be" torment my thoughts........say it ain't so........

i'm also reminded of all the discussion last fall about the meaning of "soon
be to nothing".......

in the end, i'm sure that come september, our fears will disappear.......

at least i hope so.....

peace,
tim

what follows are lyrics to new indigo girl songs.
they haven't been posted here lately, so:

boys just laugh
(amy ray)

the boy he thinks i'm damaged goods
i know he does and i guess he should
i dress like him and i take him down
he gets embarrassed when his friends come around

i can get the girl
but the boys just laugh
i can get the girls
but the boys just laugh

so this is a measure of me
even though it shouldn't be
the lion lays down with the lamb
but i can't do it so i ain't worth a d*mn

i can get the girls
but the boys just laugh
i can get the girls
but the boys just laugh at me

come on now graceful
i want you to be
come on now social
i said i want you to be
come on now special
i want you to be
i want you to be

i the virgin in the woods
tell me now if they are good

is it the boys who needed me
i am you and you set it free

i get the girls
but the boys just laugh
i get the girl
but the boys he laughs at me

i said this is the measure of me
and even though it shouldn't be
the lion lays down with the lamb
yeah but i can't do it and i ain't worth a d*mn

cold beer and remote control
(emily saliers)

all of my days have been misspent
stuffing out the sofa and the antennas bent
inside my hearts busting out at the seams
i work for the impossible american dream

i got a job at the grocery store
a few bucks an hour and not much more
the world comes in just to take things away
eat it all up and then they sleep until day

i try not to care i would lose my mind
running round after the same thing time after time
only two things bound to soothe my soul
cold beer and remote control

once upon a time i was nobodys fool
two jobs and showing up for school
i guess it comes apart so little by little
you don't know your there until your stuck in the middle

i try not to care i would lose my mind
running round the same thing time after time
only two things bound to soothe my soul
cold beer and remote control

sit down
the room is dark
the blurry graffiti on the benches
across at the public park

the plastic splatter
(the plastic splatter)
the haze is blue
(the haze is blue)
all i want
(want)
is nothing to do
(to do)

cause it's a long walk to the bus stop
it's a long wait for the turning clock
a too tired car sitting up on the blocks
and things i put aside like that pile of rocks

i try not to care i would lose my mind
running round the same thing time after time
only two things bound to soothe my soul
cold beer and remote control

yes i try not to care i would lose my mind

was leaving the oakland airport saturday (had flown in from l.a. for the
weekend), scanning the radio dial in the rental car, and came across the
unmistakable, sexy, unnerving wail of amy on "romeo and juliet." on the
radio! then, immediately following..."virginia woolf." couldn't believe it.
was on 91.5, and it sounded like a folky/acoustic show of some kind. you bay
area folks, support this station! anyone who'd play those two songs deserves
it.

a couple other stations but kmtt is my alltime fave.

paste-type car wax can often buff out scratches on cds.  watch out,
though... the newer the cd, the softer the plastic they used, and the
faster it buffs down.  (also why cds made in 1998 have more scratches in
them than cds made in 1984.  can you say, "planned obsolescence"?)

subject:      honor the earth fundraiser
mime-version: 1.0
content-type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"
content-transfer-encoding: 7bit

hello again to everyone,

well, after about a month of intense brainstorming and collaboration with
all of our national contacts, we're ready to gear this honor the earth
fundraiser into action.  the list has been so interested and active in our
drives in the past that we've decided to make it a main port through which
to reach a majority of fans.

first:  a bit about the organization.   honor the earth is a national
foundation and advocacy organization that supports front line native
environmental work. our mission is to increase funding and public support
for native communities protecting the earth we all share. the group was
formed through collaboration between indigo girls, the indigenous
environmental network, the seventh generation fund & the indigenous
women's network.  honor the earth uses music, the media and the arts to
accomplish our mission. our concert tours (featuring the indigo girls) have
raised nearly half a million dollars and significant political resources for
native environmental groups, making us the largest indigenous fundraising
campaign in history.  this year, however, has been our first foray into
grant giving and campaign organizing without a tour to support our causes.
all in all, we've done well.  still, we find ourselves in a hard spot,
especially as we look at sustaining the organization while preparing for the
honor the earth tour 2000. we ask for your help.

in 1997, a group of 120 mailing list subscribers raised approximately
$2400.00 in honor of amy's birthday.  the money helped greatly to offset
honor the earth's tour expenses.   we hope to raise enough money with this
drive to do the same with the honor 2000 tour.  the money that you donate
will be put directly into ongoing honor the earth work and in particular,
tour 2000 planning.

of course we would want to reward the generosity of all involved.  with that
thought in mind, we have formatted the fundraiser in the form of a contest
between the states. we have divided the list into six geographic regions:
northeast, southeast, great lakes, great plains, northwest and southwest.
the region that raises the most money would, in essence, be the "winner".

~ the top ten donors of the winning region will receive an advance tour
itinerary for honor 2000 (as soon as the itinerary is finalized) listing yet
un-publicized venues & dates, as well as a commemorative hte 2000 tour
poster, signed by amy and emily.

~ the top three donators of the winning region will be given a pair of
golden circle tickets (preferred seating) to the indigo girls show of their
choice (this being a show on the ig tour beginning fall 99) and a signed

photo, as well as the above.

~the top overall donator will receive a $250 gift certificate to the
freemont hemp company (accessible over the web.& donated by the infamous
listee ryan blackhawk), two golden circle tickets to the indigo girls show
of their choice, a signed photo, a tour t-shirt and a newly released signed
cd.  amy and emily will each make a personal note to the winning donator on
the autographed items.

we don't want this fundraiser to be based solely on who has the most money
to donate. we are strongly encouraging folks who want to participate to
actually conduct organizing work in their communities in order to raise
money.  spread the word to your family, friends, and fellow ig fans.  all
contributions you raise will be counted directly in
your name & will go towards your region's final total.

**please check with us prior to engaging in a fundraising activity. call
1-800-earth-07 (1-800-327-8407) for hte authorization.

some examples of approved fundraising activities are:

? setting up literature and donation cans for honor the earth in your local
co-ops or other supportive community stores;
? organizing honor the earth tabling at community events;
? organizing your own benefit events (with local bands or speakers)
? making presentations and taking up collections in your churches, book
groups and schools
? holding an honor the earth raffle (i.e. for a cd player or other item).
? soliciting donations from local merchants and independent business owners,
and auctioning them off over the web (remember to check with us first!)

each person who wants to participate in the fundraiser will receive a
literature kit and information on how to purchase hte merchandise wholesale.
volunteer coordinators in each region will be available to help in any way.
throughout the drive, they will be posting statistics & encouragement to
keep you up to date on your regions placing.

specific regions & regional coordinators are:
northwest: washington, oregon, idaho, wyoming & alaska
ryan (hawke2@msn.com)

southwest: california, nevada, utah, colorado, arizona, new mexico & texas
larissa (btoak@yahoo.com)

great plains: north dakota, south dakota, nebraska, kansas, minnesota, iowa,
missouri & oklahoma
kelly (fairbk@sage.edu)

great lakes: wisconsin, illinois, michigan, indiana & ohio
shannon (shannonmast@hotmail.com)

northeast: maine, new york, vermont, new hampshire, massachusetts,
connecticut, new jersey, maryland, virginia, west virginia, pennsylvania &
maryland
jackie (rop1@aol.com)

southeast: arkansas, louisiana, mississippi, alabama, tennessee, kentucky,
north carolina, south carolina, georgia & texas.
java (worldfalls@earthlink.net)

any other questions can be directed to me at ggohn@email.women.com

we plan to hold this fundraiser over a period of one month, beginning on
july 25 and ending august 25, 1999.  all donations must be post marked by
august 25th in order to be counted in their region's total. checks and money
orders are to be made out to honor the earth/the tides center. receipts will
be available for tax purposes for contributions over $100. donations may be
sent to:

yes he did - on his album "no parlez", but the liner notes don't say who
wrote the song.

hi everyone - i hope it's not as humid where you are today!  :)

i was hoping someone could give me some information. i know there are a lot
of ani difranco fans on this list as well.  i have an opportunity to see her
live in concert in las vegas, and i was wondering if anyone who's seen her
could fill me in on how she is live.  i only have "like i said" by ani -
she's an artist i was hoping to become more familiar with, and this may be an
opportunity.  i guess i'm basically soliciting reviews and opinions.  let me
know what you think - what your favorite album is, what you like off of her
current album, etc.  any opinions would be helpful.  (obviously, please
respond to me privately).

thanks so much!

hey, they do play ig in cincinnati!  it took me forever before i realized
that, too.  89.7, which is northern kentucky university's station, plays
them quite a lot.  in fact, they play a lot of ig b-sides and live tracks.
the problem is you have to catch them at the right time.  it's an npr
station so they have news on a lot, and other times they just have (what i
think is) really bad music on.  another thing is sometimes it's hard to get
good reception.

this station carries  the world cafe, too (www.worldcafe.org).  you just
have to keep listening - i've also heard cry cry cry, melissa ferrick, ani
difranco, beth orton, patty griffin, lucinda williams, danielle howle, over
the rhine, and tons of others that don't get play on those crappy popular
stations.  i've also heard them talk about amy, and how she discovered so
and so.  these people are ig fans!

re chicago radio:  as a chi-town native, i feel i can say this:  chicago
radio sucks!  for a city its size you would think there would be
something.  but nooooooooooooooo.  93.1 is your best bet, but it's still
just ok.  and our npr station is mostly news and classical...

re ohio radio:  i go to school in ohio.  i think i once found that
northern kentucky station.  i was driving in cinci one sunday, and they
kept talking about the crazy ladies (?) bookstore, which sounded
interesting so i found it and checked it out.  anyway, i listened to that
station until i lost it (somewhere on i-75 northbound), and it seemed like
they were playing lesbian and gay programming!  they talked about upcoming
events and played a lot of music by openly les/bi/gay artists, such as
(but not limited to) the indigo girls, kd lang, cris williamson, ferron,
etc.  what a find!  and especially in cinci (ohio)!  oh yeah, and they
also seemed to play general feminist music, because i also heard dar
williams and carrie newcomer.  if only chicago had a 24-7 station like
that...  of course, if you're near springfield/dayton next spring between
6-8pm on sundays, you can always listen to my women in music show on my
college station, 89.1fm...just a small plug ;)

hi all,

wow, it's been a long time since i've posted... i guess i've become quite
the lurker.  in any event, i wanted to say something about this as well.
change is inevitable.  it keeps the girls fresh and involved in their
music.  if every song was ctf or galileo or sf, we would become bored and
probably disinterested.  i, for one, look forward to new material.  i love
to see what comes from the girls' creative minds.  granted, sots wasn't
exciting, it did have some good material and it was a step that needed to
be taken in order for the girls to continue to grow.  i'm looking forward
to the new album (just as much as everyone else) and can't wait to see
exactly what emily meant....

huggies,
theresa

hi,
okay, i was on this list back in '97, when i was at hardin-simmons. then the
mail volume got to be too much.

if there are any fellow lubbockites, you have probably figured out that ktxt
88.1 is lubbock's only radio station that plays ig (especially when tropical
breeze is djing ;)  they are usually on playlist, though, so they don't get
them on a lot.  i know the songs available are closer to fine, get together,
galileo, three hits, touch me fall, power of two, dead man's hill, shed your
skin (tom morello remix), get out the map, it's alright, something like i'll
give you my skin off of some kind of compilation cd w/ a dog on the front.

for those of you that aren't on the mailing list, now you know that west
texas plays some ig and you know the songs they play :) <----- i am going to
8/29 lilith fair.

subject:      (long)amy in the morning--the broadcast
mime-version: 1.0
content-type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"

rebroadcast this morning (6/7/99)....enjoy:  (a=amy   m=mountain interviewer)

m: we'll play back our conversation with amy...the indigo girls have one of
those followings where, you put them on the air once and you get alot of
email from really all over the world with people going "are you going to
put that on the internet? we want to hear that"....the answer is yes...

due to popular demand, let us reprise our conversation with, we thought it
was going to be two indigo girls, but it's going to be just one...and
that's plenty, amy ray on the mountain.  how are you amy?
a:  i'm good.
m:  hey wait a minute, they told us two indigo girls and we only have one.
a:  (chuckle) the other one, ah, she was doing interviews and now she's
down, we're in the studio so she must be recording something.
m: what is more important!
a: (laugh) i don't know!
m: where are your priorities!  amy has her priorities straight...well tell
us what's going on, you're working on your next studio album.
a:  yah, we're in the middle of recording, we probably have about three
weeks to go and, ah, god we're in the middle of it and we're starting to
put together a band and get ready to go out and do lilith shows, and
bumbershoot...
m:  now did i read that you started working on this in england, is that right?
a:  yah, we started with um, we met a guy on last lilith named john
reynolds who was playing drums with sinead o'connor at the time. he invited
us over to london to record in his studio, so we hopped over there for a
few weeks.  actually ended up putting down alot of the stuff that we're
using on the record...the root of that is from his sessions. and then we
did some work with a few other people but we're back with him now in
atlanta finishing the record, so that's....
m:  now did i read that you were with a couple of the guys from the band,
rick danko (sp?), and garth hudson, now did that come to pass?
a:  yah, we did that, we went up to our other drummer jerry marotta's
studio and he's friends with these guys and we invited rick and garth in
and we did a couple of songs with them and it was great, it was 'keiser'
(laugh)i don't know, it's hard to explain, they just have a thing! you know?
m: yah, well here comes the dorky radio question now, is the new stuff a
big departure from ah....(the previous album)
a:  (laugh) i don't know yet cause we're not done...it could go any way, i
mean honestly. there's... i wouldn't say it is a massive departure...i
don't know, this producer john, he's real different, than other people
we've worked with and his mixes have alot of depth, and stuff. so i think
it's going to be a different feel. and he's very into, ah, you know,
grooves...even when it's just acoustic, you know. so there's definately a
real rhythmic focus but um, we wrote, i wrote, i either wrote stuff that
was more in the appalachian (sp?) vain or in the sort of the punk vain, and
it sort of goes between the two. emily has written kind of some groovy
songs that are....her stuff is pretty 'up' on this record, like upbeat. so
we'll we'll see what happens.
m:   i'm always fascinated on the process of recording, and i sometimes
wonder how you know when your done?  how do you know "yes this cd is
finished." ??
a:  well, they usually have to drag me out and lock me in my house!
(laughs) and won't let me back in! i never want to stop. i mean that's
where it really comes in handy to have, you know for me and emily to have
been working together for so long, because she can tell me and i can tell
her and we listen to each other. you know, so we both have points where we
say "i think that song's finished" you know, and the other person either
agrees, it just gives you more opinions. but, i don't know, you just feel,
you could listen forever and in a year you probably are not going to feel
the same thing about your cd that you felt when you finished it.
m: yah, when you listen to it on the radio do you go "oh, man we should
have done that...!"
a: i mean, sometimes, and i don't listen to stuff after we finish it except
for just to make sure it's done, and then i'm done with it.
m:  except when your performing it....
a:  yah, but that's a completely different process you know?
m:  well, speaking of performing, we talked with one of your cohorts
recently and maybe you can name this big time rock star who talked about
you......(female voice)
"it's true that when the indigo girls signed on that they
really did get things going, that they kind of mingled every
one together....including me.  you know they just come right
into your dressing room, say 'hi and drag you out on stage
        with them..."
m: amy ray, who is that?
a: (laughs) it could have been anybody!! we dragged everyone out of their
dressing room!  who is it??
m:  that was suzanne vega.
a:  that was suzanne!!
m:  ya, ya, we asked her about the lilith fair and how cool it must have
been to be sitting at the deli spread with alot of other artists, and she
said "you know not everybody came out of their trailers and sat at the deli
spread until the indigo girls showed up and got everybody out together!"
a:  (laugh) well see you threw me, cause you called her a big rock star!!
m:  (laugh) i see...
a:  well, she's kind of more real than that i guess...it's true we're kind
of shameless in that way and i guess it's, alot of people probably get sick
of it, but we, we don't really have a good time unless we're dragging
people out and meeting people and stuff and it has nothing to do with
anything, except fun. i think some people are like, "oh, jesus, here they
come again." but you know, whatever!
m: you're like the social director of the lilith fair!
a: it's funny because, we're really not that social as people goes. i mean
its the music thing...it's just more fun to play with other people than it
is...we've been playing together for so long it's like, we want to do some
other stuff.
m: well, the lilith fair kicks off in july, (amy, "yah") and from what
sarah mclauchlan told us...she said she wanted to do three years and take a
break, so is that the deal?
a:  that's the deal, that's the deal and i think it's a wise move.
m:  yah, quit while you're on top...
a:  well, also i think it's energized alot of people to go out and pour in
ensembles with other women and then, you know, not feel the least bit
hesitant about doing that. and i think that will carry on, and i think
sarah's intent is for that to carry on. um, so i think she'll give it a
break, and give herself a break, i mean jesus it's like so much energy, and
ah, she has alot of integrity.
m: she's going to make a great pta mom i think...(amy laughs), well now
amy, you and emily will be doing a bunch of lilith dates and then when you
come here it'll be for bumbershoot festival on labor day weekend at
memorial stadium at seattle center. so will your album be done or out by then?
a:  it won't be out, but it'll be done.
m:  you'll be doing stuff from the new album
a:  yah, yah, and hopefully we'll have whatever band we're going to have
and we'll be doing all of our new stuff but we'll probobly play old stuff
too. we're not the kind of band that just goes out and does our new record.
we usually try to play the old material too, cause it's, i don't know, it's
more fun for us. so, it'll be a hodgepodge and ah, it'll be some electric
and we'll try to do some stuff by ourselves as well.
m:  well it'll be great to have you back and i don't think it's any secret
to you that people love you in this part of the country, so...
a:  we love playing in seattle!  we really do, and i was going to come to
bumbershoot anyway and hang out, so, i'm really excited that we're playing
because i had actually already made plans to come and see bands.
m:  do you wear a disguise in the audience like michael jackson or
something..?
a: (laughs) i don't think i need to!
m:  we're holding this lilith fair cd, ah, i think this would be volume
iii, that you guys are on. get out the map is on there right?
a:  ah, yah, yah, yah..
m:  now exactly where was get out the map recorded, the version on this cd?
do you remember?
a:  ah, this is a trick question.....
m:  i don't know the answer....
a:  i don't either.  because we picked them off of these tapes of
everything, and we didn't write down the place names on it, we just picked it.
m:  well wherever it was, it's good!
a:  well, cool.
m:  well, amy thanks for talking with us, say hi to emily (a: i will)
and we'll see you both when you come to seattle for bumbershoot labor day
weekend
a:  alright  you guys take care.
m: now get back to work!
a:  ok!! alright..bye.
--------------------------------------
that's it...the dj's are rather lame (imho). but good stuff from amy.
hope you enjoyed it.  stacy.

i can sympathize with all those who do not hear ig on
the radio as much as they would like, if at all.  i
live in westchester county, ny and i almost never hear
them on the radio.  occasionally i hear them on 95.5
wplj and that is just closer to fine. i would love to
hear bdybmhs and i would settle for anything else.  i
was just wondering if anyone from the surrounding area
could recommend a station that plays a sort of ig/folk
style of music.  that would make my driving time much
more exciting.
