hey, this is nigc - but a free concert in the los angeles area, so i'm
offering the pass to anyone on the list in the so cal area who wants it.
just email me back this week, and i'll give you the details. if there is
more than one person who responds to this email, i'll do a random drawing on

diane
here's a little bit about the artist from the website:
the extremely talented 16 year old anoushka shankar, who has studied under
her father for the last seven years and in 1995, at the age of 13, made her
professional debut in new delhi, india. since then she has assisted her
father at major concert halls in india, europe, united states, asia and the
far east. anoushka is the only student of ravi shankar to study under his
tutelage from the absolute beginning, starting with how to hold the sitar.
trained also in classical piano, ms. shankar is developing her own unique
sound by studying the masterful style of her father.in march she accompanied
him in a performance of his concerto no. 1 for sitar and orchestra with the
london syphony orchestra conducted by zubin mehta, in celebration of the
50th anniversary of the independence of india. critics worldwide acknowledge
the gifts of this rising star and hail her as the obvious successor to the
great tradition of her father.

they're giving away stuff in a contest if you register. obviously, it isn't

now this is a topic i haven't seen discussed yet. i was wondering if
anyone has seen references (overt or otherwise) to ig in novels or short
stories or even poetry. i've got two examples: in wally lamb's i know this
much is true, the ex-wife of the narrator has an indigo girls cassette in
her truck. :) the other mention i've seen was in glimmer train stories (a
lit mag) last spring - one of the prize winning stories had a narrator who
was complaining because his wife or girlfriend (i can't remember which)
listened to a pair of female singers who did a cover of uncle john's band.
i thought both this references were very interesting, because the women's
listening to the girls was intended as a means of characterizing them in
the eyes of the narrators. positively, in lamb's case, and negatively in
the short story. of course, as a ig obsessed fan, it instantly put me on
the "side" of the women, but i'm wondering what the average reader would
think. what sort of stereotypes (good and bad) would the average reader
project onto a character who likes the indigo girls?
any thoughts?
and yes, i do have too much time on my hands right now! thanks for asking!

ig was mentioned in the antelope wife by louise erdich. i don't remember

sorry that i have been lurking for a while but i have
been dealing with a few health problems....i have

really gotten me down lately physically and i have not
been able to do much except read a few of the

not realize that he is the greatest marketing ploy
those people he speaks out against have...have you
noticed that the teletubbies sales have almost doubled
since then....hmmmmm makes me wonder if he has stock
in these companies....his speaking out against lilith
will only make it all the more popular with all of
those teenage rebels out there....so hey, sticks and
stones may break my bones but bad press will always
boost our ratings.....

hey gang,
just a couple of updates about the personal fundraising side of this
drive.... a number of you have contacted me regarding canvassing,
tabling & such in your communities once the whole thing starts on
july25th. in my first post, i mentioned that we'd send out a package of
information to help you get set up. here's the news on that front:
full packets will be sent from headquarters on the 18th of july. ...in
the meantime we'd be happy to mail out a sample kit with copies of our
last few newsletters, so that you're able to bone up on the info. what
i need (from everyone who's interested in receiving a kit) is a quick
note that includes your snail mail addy, and also lets me know whether
or not you're planning on selling merchandise during your tabling
opportunities (or in whatever canvassing scheme you choose to embark
on). the literature is free of course. if you do choose to sell
merchandise though, there are a couple of different things i need to let
you know about ordering.
first off, there are three items:
1. honor1
a double disk compilation cd including artists such as the indigo girls
(in their only recorded songwriting collaboration), bonnie raitt, toad
the wet sprocket, soul asylum, ulali, keith secola, jane sibberi,
victoria williams and many more. the wholesale price is $8.50, and it
retails from anywhere in between $15-20...your choice. there is a
purchase minimum of 12.
b. hte commemorative 1997 tour poster (with the indigo girls)
wholesale is $3.00; retail $5-10
c. hte native women poster by betty laduke
wholesale is $5.00; retail $8-15
daemon still handles all of our cd distribution, so any orders for that
item need to go through them (they will also mail out on the 18th). get
in touch with me first, and i'll let them know to expect your order.
we're not making a profit by selling these wholesale, so the donations
that you receive will be a huge help. the retail prices listed are by
donation (unless you're a small business owner), so you can fix your own
price if you'd rather (as long as it isn't under what we've marked), and
anything more that you can get people to put towards the cause will be
greatly appreciated. all contributions that you raise will be entered
in both your personal and regional totals.
again, for those of you who are interested, there is no obligation for
you to purchase anything. you can collect donations with your free
literature, or go door to door or whatever you'd like. i just wanted to
get the information out there. drop me a line at ggohn@email.women.com
and let me know what your plan of action is.
thanks y'all.

mentioned in "madder rose" by stephen king ( i *still* say he walked by my

say a prayer for mr. king, he is still in intensive care, ironically down

you'd be utterly aghast at how many bootleg cds there are of ani's
concerts out there. i have three or four myself (i lost count), and just
last week in iowa city, i could have purchased three more. i didn't.
my conservative side won out. well, my credit card was screeming,
"no! no! please, please spare meeeeeeeee!"
i have introspective, and if you remember, twink!, i offered copies to
all of you around the columbus lilith fair timeframe last year.
that's when rick said he'd do them. remember??? it's very very
good. i'd recommend getting it if you have the bucks.
at any rate, the best bootleg of ani i've heard so far is called
"folk hero", a concert in osaka, japan. lots of nice dialogue, as she
tries to communicate with people who probably understand her
every word. very cute. i didn't buy it, but i can order it and/or pick
it
up whenever i'm ready. the same goes for y'all. ask your
independent music store if they carry or would order bootleg
cds for you. many will. they have distributors for that stuff.

hello folks,
haven't posted in a while. boy you know the good
girls haven't been on tv for a while when you get
excited over their little heads in the corner of a
graphic while jon stewart is making fun of them.
(tell me i'm not the only one who instantly checked
the tv listings for daily show repeats.)
anyway, i know a lot of folks have been posting bout
hearing baby don't you break my heart slow on the
radio, but i don't remember if anyone mentioned the
video. i was flippin channels monday nite, waiting
for leno to come on (delayed by the mnba game), and
caught the ending of vonda's video on vh1. there was
someone with a little too much eye shadow swaying
behind the piano, but when i tried to get closer to
the tv i accidentally kneeled on the remote and *poof*
the tv went off and by the time i got it back on there
were only scenes of vonda and some guy. anyway, i
think that was the hallowed emily in the background
(but don't hold me to that) and i've been trying to
catch every video vh1 airs since (which isn't too hard
considering they only show videos late at night and
early in the morning). anyway, if anyone's seen that
video and knows it's not emily let me know so i don't
have to lose too much more sleep waiting for it.
take care y'all,
lori ann (anxiously awaiting the package in the mail
that contains the new luscious jackson album)

hi all,
just stepping out of lurkdom long enough to comment on the documentary
that i just finished watching on pbs. it was done by the aclu. i think
it was called "after stonewall". don't quote me on that though. if
anyone knows the real name of the documentary, i would love to know what
it is so i can buy it.
the ig content comes in this- there were scenes from the viseo "joking"
and shots of ig during a past rally at washington dc. i believe they
were singing finlandia. they showed several shots of the crowd. there
were some people with tears in their eyes while the girls were singing.
i have to admit that lately i haven't cared for much of the new stuff
that ig has been doing. it has been a long time since i pulled out my ig
cd's. after seeing this documentary and seeing those people, feeling the
chills go down my spine when i heard amy and emily sing accapella, it all
came back to me.
the documentary was truly amazing. i highly recommend it to anyone gay
or straight that is interested in seeing a great history on the continued
struggle for gay rights.
thanks,

when it comes to big label record deals, you can take the artist out of
the indie world, but you can't always take the indie out of the artist. just
ask amy ray. after spending several years recording for an independent label
herself, ray, as one-half of the popular folk duo the indigo girls, signed to
epic in 1989. a year later, she became smitten with the idea of starting a
non-profit label whose roster would include some of her favorite songwriters.
in the midst of the indigo girls' first major-label tour in 1990, she founded
the small atlanta-based company, daemon records.
during the nine years since daemon's inception, the label has concentrated

mostly on signing acts located in the southeast. in return for distribution
and publicity (and, of course, the status conferred upon them by the label),
artists are expected to tour regularly, and to take
primary responsibility for overseeing their own careers. among the artists
currently on the roster are danielle howle, terri binion, belloluna, ph

market. future plans include expanding the roster to include a handful of
acts located in other parts of the country as well. recently, ray talked
about the manner in which daemon was founded, as well as its history and
philosophy.

this is kind of off-topic, but when i called up my dad for father's day last
sunday, i think he saw this documentary when he was flipping through the
channels around midnight last week. and then knowing that i am so crazy
about the indigo girls (my mom complains that they are my god--just because
i had my mini-shrine over the fireplace in my bedroom before i moved to pa),
my father videotaped a portion of it for me. isn't that sweet?
oh, ignore the anouska shankar free concert thingy. my initial post about
the free concert never got posted, so it was out of place when i emailed it
from another email account (dyndigo@aol.com).

it is available at amazon.com, as a part of the set of before and after stonewall, and separately. "before stonewall" was terrific too.
you maybe able to catch it on pbs again, check listings at:
http://www.pbs.org/whatson/1999/06/descriptions/afst.html
i'm not sure about the aclu connection, though, i might have to watch it closer next time.
there was also a very special thank you to "indigo girls and epic" in the credits.

if you have not ever witnessed caroline aiken live, you need to. she's
heading to ca for a while, so you west-coasters finally get a chance to
see her. for the newbies - caroline is an old friend of ig and helped
them out when they started. they sing on one of her cds. she's in the
watershed video. anyhow - she's awesome - kind of like bonnie raitt
with an acoustic and no slide. an amazing player - if you're big into
the guitar stuff, she'll memorize you. aggressive loud rockin stuff.
don't miss her if she's in your town.

hey peeps,
i've mentioned her shows in the southeast now and then: diane ward. local
miami singer/songwriter that just absolutely rocks my world. was voted best
female rock vocalist in the _best of the miami new times_ >again<.
she managed to get an opening gig for amy and emily for honor the earth when
they came to west palm beach 2 years (was it?) ago. so there's your igc.
well, also she came out of nowhere and started playing "mystery" one night.
i heard those chords and everything in me just stopped as i tried to figure
out exactly what song it was. and then when she kicked in with "each time
you pulled down the driveway . . . " i just about dropped on the floor. lol.
to have two of your absolute favorite artists together in that particular
way . . . my heart was so full. i grabbed my friend and wrapped her arounds
around me, and we sang along as loud as we could. and god said it was good
:-)
and get this. i do believe she has surpassed amy and the divine miss em. as
my favorite musician. can you imagine? and i'm a big indigo freak. there's
just something about her songwriting and singing, it's like every song has
its own built-in catharsis, that grabs you. and her new cd was just recently
released, but you gotta see her live. then you can buy her music :-) or buy
her music anyway if you can't go see her.
she is going to be at atlanta's pride festival this weekend!! friday, june
25th at 6:30pm on the main stage at piedmont park. then onto eddie's attic
at 9:30pm opening for halcyon (another awesome south fla. group).
saturday the 26 in winter park, fl at borders. showtime is 8pm.
sunday the 27 back to atlanta-- the second stage at 5:30pm at the pride
festival again in piedmont park.
sorry for the length of this post. it's just that every time i write to the
list about her, which is not very often, i have to
recontextualize/reintroduce her as well as sing her praises over again to
properly convey why you all need to see her :-)
she also has a website: dianeward.com with performance dates and other stuff.
give it a look. she's been going up to atlanta a little more often
recently, as well as other stops, gainesville and tampa and orlando, along
the way. so more of you can check her out.
diane ward and indigo forever! lol

as previously mentioned, after stonewall is the sequel to before stonewall.
it premiered last week at the san francisco gay and lesbian film festival,
and then again wednesday on pbs. the doc was very good, narrarated by melissa
etheridge and did indeed have clips and sound from ig. i first though that
the song they were singing was american tune, but now that you mention
finlandia, that is probably correct. and as for the festival, it was from
1990 earth day celebration on the mall in dc. you can tell because woody
harelson is in the middle of a & e. (i only know because my friend was
interpreting at the time)
the aclu may have been a sponsor, but it was not the main group behind the
project. the documentary was done by the same people who did the first one,
produced by john scagliotti. at the film fest it was co-sponsored by the gay
and lesbian historical society of northern california.
someone already posted that you could get them off of amazone, but may i also
suggest looking into reel.com and www.frameline.com. frameline is a great
queer distributer, and reel.com is a big supporter of the queer community and
works in conjunction with planetout and others.
hope this was helpful, and sorry if anyone has already posted this, i am on
digest.
kate
ps. just as a reminder... as with any documentary, the story is not complete.
smashing 30 years into a little over 87 minutes is quite a task, and there is
no way to make everyone satisfied. (a lesson i must tell myself when watching
segments of history being overshadowed ;) but it is worth everyone's time to
go see it... and if interested to continue to inform yourself of our history.

hkf's,
so i'm eating my double-quarter pounder with cheese and a super-sized fries
- when i happen to glance at the newspaper sitting next to me. it's the
weekend preview section with a subheading of dining - and the article on the
front says: "a watershed ever: boutique becomes restaurant". and i'm like,
oh my gosh! that paper is today's paper!!!! (a few mom's pull there kids
in close and forewarn them about an obsessed fan in the vicinity)
anyway, it's pretty much a full page article that has a big picture of some
food (gnocchi w/ roasted tomato sauce and polenta with roasted cherry
tomatoes) (hehe-i'm not makin' this stuff up!) and then there's a smaller
picture to the side of emily (!) and two chefs. the caption below the
picture reads: "indigo girls emily saliers (left) is a co-owner, while
chefs scott peacock and angie brewer head the culinary team." this photo
and caption aren't on the website version of this article - so there ya go.
(and i can scan the picture in monday - that's when my scanner will be fixed
- and put it up on my website... i'll let you know.)

and last but not least - less than one month until ig make there lilith
debut in their hometown of atlanta!!! wooo hooooo!!!!

subject: daemon phbalance not on the list at mtv
mime-version: 1.0
content-type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii
hey all,
i went to the site to vote for the daemon artist
phbalence and they were not on the list...neither was
daemon on the list of indie labels...so, i went to
this address
http://www.mtv.com/sendme.tin?page=/mtv/music/flying_indie
and sent a responce to them not being there...
the link to do so is at the bottom of the page so hey
if you got a minute and it ticked you off that once
again the "gods" at mtv and ignored the best of what
is out there and have ignored our wants and needs as
listeners then respond...i know my soapbox is way too
tall at the moment :o) here is what i sent them....
(and yes it was a bit much but hey along with my
recent health problems...i have been having these
wonderful hormone surges...and at that moment i was
rideing one pretty high.....)
my question to you is this...why is daemon records not
on the indie listings that you have on the flying
indie page....not to mention the fact that phbalance
was supposed to be on the list of videos to vote for
and it was not....what is the deal...you know the
entire idea of an independent label is to avoid the bs
that goes along with the major labels and to develop
talent that would normally go unnoticed
otherwise...and here you are recognizing the fact that
they exist but leaving out one of the biggest indie
labels out there....what's up with that?....is it the
association with the indigo girls that sends your
homophobic hearts into a frenzie ...or was it a simple
oversight of lovely pc minded people who work there at
mtv....(yes i am being
facetious but hey you guys started this)....it upsets
myself and other like minded people to know that one
of the most popular bands in alternative/folk music
often goes ignored or put away because they don't play
the commercial don't ask don't tell games that other
artists play....and you know the real kicker is that
the more you people ignore them the bigger their fan
base becomes...the only downside is that we do not get
the enjoyment of watching your channel or
participating in your so called music variety because

this bill will now make it legal to "kill a homo (or muslim, jew, black,
etc.) for christ". please call your reps today and tell them to vote no on
this. i am becoming increasingly concerned about the radical religious reich
stomping all over the constitution as they have in the past couple weeks.
for a party that espouses belief in less government, the republicans are
certainly doing their best to legislate every detail of our lives. but then,
this bill has very strong support from democrats as well.
----------------------------------------------
a large coalition of republicans and democrats in congress are looking to
shred all local, state, and national civil rights laws -- including all gay
rights laws -- through the so-called religious liberties protection act...
see http://www.msnbc.com/news/283516.asp
in brief, the law "would permit people to cite religion as a reason for
discriminating not just against homosexuals but also against people with
other differences of which they disapprove on some ostensibly religious
grounds."
ok, does everyone know how to contact your congressman? information can be
found at http://lcweb.loc.gov/global/legislative/congress.html

daemon records announce - http://www.daemonrecords.com
hello daemonites,
sorry to bother you again for the second time today and for the third
time this week. after i sent the last email and i was able to calm down i
thought "f--- this!" it is obvious that this contest has nothing to do
with indie labels and everything to do with indies that are tied in one
way or another to a major label. well this is the time to show them that
there are a lot of us who support real indies.
all we wanted is to be on the ballot, but since we didn't even make
the
ballot, this is what i am proposing. we treat it like a candidate for the
green party who didn't make the ballot for the election. we vote anyway
and show them how many of us there are. so if you can please send an email
to mtv2music@mtv.com and write on the subject line we want ph balance on
mtv. on the body of the message write something like this.
dear mtv,
i am very dissapointed that the ph balnce's "soothing' music video
didn't
make it on the ballot for the flying indie video contest. i am writing to
vote for it regardless. thank you and have nice day.
sincerely,
(insert your name here)
please forward this to as many indie and daemon records supporters as you
can. it is also importanta that you mail it today. at this point i don't
care if they show the video or not, but we have to open mtv's eyes to the
fact that there are thousands of people that support our scene. again, i
apologize for the multiple messages but i had to speak my mind.
rock on!

stepping up on the soap box again....
surely our congressional system can not be this
blind....can you imagine the mass chaos that would
ensue this bill? can you imagine the lawyers that
would get fat off the defense...."oh it was not my
fault that i strung up that homosexual from the tree
in my yard....my religion forced me to do it..." it
would basically be making the kkk and other hate
groups into religious organizations....i can hear the
hymns now....(sing along now if you know that tune)
"just as i am....better than you.....and if you don't
like it...i'll kill you too"....(please forgive me
lord...i could not keep that one to myself)....
why can't these people realize that every time they
put things on the "no-no list" it drawn more and more
people to it....i have said it before and i will say
it again...bad press makes for wonderful sales
figures....now come on fellow listees...raise your
hands if you own a tinkie winkie tellitubbie
doll....see what i mean? and now here we are giving
these same self righteous assholes the approval to
shoot us at will and hide behind "god" to boot? no no
no no no no no, we shall not stand silently by as our
lives are ripped from us when these same people, in
the light of last years tragic loss of mathew
shepheard, should be protecting us instead of helping
to harm us....maybe they figure that in order to solve
the problem they need to diminish our numbers....
'
ok, ok, i am dismounting the soap box....lord i love
these hormone surges...tee hee....but seriously people
lets scout this out find out the facts and
intelligently bombard our congressmens offices with
demands to be treated equally....my town is in the
process of voting on a city ordinance that will
include sexual orientation in the list things not to
discriminate against for employment, housing, hate
crimes..etc...and we have to remember we are not
fighting just for ourselves...the things we struggle
with and overcome are the things that future
generations will never have to give a second thought
to....

hey all,
since i am in the business of reading people's gripe mail, i have a tip:
please be sure to write your own message, don't copy the daemon message
word-for-word. those kinds of mass mailings tend to get ignored.
but support daemon, nonetheless!!! just be sure to come up with your own
words.

well, i think since we kinda *skipped* am's b'day earlier this year, we
should definitely get something done for emily... maybe even make it out as a
gift for the two of them...
what do y'all think???
we could donate again and make a certificate for a&e about it...
i'm sure some kind listee would love to design something like that...
also...
we could send that smallternative thingy along with it, as we had
discussed around am's b'day...
anyhoooooo, we should get this off the ground soon....
we managed it before, we should be able to get it done again, don't ya
think???

i just went to an ani difranco concert and i was meaning to buy one of the

venue. is there anyone going to an upcoming show who would be so kind as to
pick one up for me if i send money for the shirt and postage? the one i
wanted has the pic from her upx6 album cover on the front and the back says
"up up up up up up points the spire of the steeple but god's work isn't done
by god, it's done by people." if they have medium, that would be great but
i'm assuming they don't so large would be fine, too. also, if it's possible
let me know by tonight because i'm leaving on vacation tomorrow morning.
otherwise, i'll be back next week. thanks soooo much and sorry for the nigc.

so is anyone else going to see ani in chicago tonight? it should be quite
a busy day, first chicago pride (i didn't go to dyke march because i was
at the natsu matsuri (summer fest -- japanese) instead) and then ani!
wow, what a weekend in chicago -- the cubs are at home, womyn's world cup,
taste of chicago, natsu matsri, dyke march, pride, and ani! anyway, if
you're going to the show, look for me -- i have no clue what i'll be
wearing, but i am short (like really short) and have wavy brown hair...

hey there!
okay, we already have a designer for the certificate:)).
thx alyssa:)...
now, we should make up our minds on other things around the b'day gift,
like:
- which listee would be volunteering for the job of organizing everything
and then send the gift to rcam or even better hand it over to em at a gig
- are we doing a *combined gift* for the two of them??? (alyssa, would
kinda need to know that, to incorporate it in the card) i think, we definitely
should, since we *skipped* am's b'day and it would look kinda strange to now
have a *solo*;) gift for em, don't ya think??
- which organization should we donate to??? since time is running up we
maybe shouldn't do the great democratic voting thingy;)... hte would be an
obvious choice... or if not everyone is fine with that we could just have
everyone donate to his/her fav ig related cause and tell the organizer of the
amount and the organization and we would then sum up all donations and give a
list of organizations which have been donated to in the name of a&e....
hm, i'm sure there is more... but those are the most important things, i
can think of right now...
come on people, let's get this off the ground, hm??

hi y'all,
i know i lurk way too much and must really re-join the conversation, but...
well, no excuses. i just need to do it! in any event, this is my
question/statement. i love emily. i love her song-writing and playing and
her whole vibe, but i hate the song she does with vonda. probably because
i'm not a big vonda fan. does anyone else feel this way? please don't
flame me. i am entitled to my opinion and one song is not an entire album.
i just needed to let my feelings be known before i exploded from reading
all these laudatory posts about the song.
that's all.

hkf's,
there was just one vote for this saying yea, but mine will have to be a nay
for daemon. first off, daemon records would be an amy only donation - and
would pretty much leave emily out of the picture. a similar solo-ish emily
project would be watershed - but that would be kind of silly to donate to as
well. the reason i bring that up is because i think that both of these
projects would be a waste to donate to because they are not really causes
that need financial help. they are both specific projects with narrow focus
- instead of wide-ranging causes that deal with a whole list of things.
both these projects have funding from one indigo girl - and i think they are
doing fine.
my vote would be more towards hte or something like that - maybe a youth
pride something, or a billings-house from a while back. (sorry for being
vague) basically, if you donate towards daemon it could help out local
atlanta music a little bit more. but if you donate towards hte - you could
be helping native americans and their communities and the environment...
(i'm sure this list could go on & on...) i just think that there are so
many other worthy causes out there that aren't fortunate enough to have the
tremendous backing of one of our girls - but we can help them out in their
honor.
does that make sense or did i lose too many brain cells this weekend and
they haven't been replaced yet... (that's my story and i'm stickin' to it)
ok... back to lurk mode... "but you certainly don't lurk"
oh yeah... well, i'll talk to y'all soon then...

well, it really does not matter to me what we do, but
you know, even though amy owns the record label, it is
financed by record sales and the money goes right back
into the business, not into anyones. pockets, so
really yes, we would be helping atlanta artists, but
you know, at least we would know where the money
went....hell it dont matter i made my vote and what
ever the outcome is then i will gladly give up my

not let it go by lke we did amy's b-day....eveyone

hey,
i am also for the most part a lurker. but this is
something i wanted to add my opinion to. i think that
a great place to donate to would be smyal (sexual
minority youth assistance league) they help out gay
youth so much. i worked with them about two years ago
and know that they need money badly. also what about
pflag? i know the girls support both of them a lot.
in august at the milwaukee lilith fair i will be

sure i will see the girls back there. so if that isn't
to late then i could give them the bday presents. but
if its too late....
i dont know thats my two cents worth.

january 27, 1999
me again... sorry about the screwed up format... but here is some info on
the low power radio coalition which amy thinks is worth supporting:
the honorable william kennard
chairman
federal communications commission
445 12 st. sw
washington, dc 20554
dear chairman kennard:
the low power radio coalition strongly
encourages the federal communications
commission to explore the implementation
of a new class of low power fm
radio stations. radio is our national
medium - according to a recent study, 95% of
american adults listen to radio daily. we
represent a broad nationwide
constituency that could, if provided the
opportunity, utilize broadcast radio to serve
the communities in which we work and live.
low power fm stations could have
significant impact throughout the nation by
both building on existing effective models
and expanding the use of radio into new
arenas, such as the following:
helping local and regional government
communicate with citizens:
low power fm will help realize
broadcast radio's potential as a
communications tool for local
governments, including police
departments and social service
agencies. many communities
creatively and aggressively program
public, education and
government (peg) cable television
channels to provide residents
with useful information. these
programs do not reach the millions of
americans who choose not to or cannot
afford to subscribe to cable
television. however, these persons
have access to radio.
low power fm radio could assist
police departments in their
community policing programs by
simulcasting existing cable television
call-in shows on fm radio. similarly,
local governments can take
advantage of radio's near-universal
penetration to factor low power
fm into emergency plans. for example,
in large media markets,
specific counties or neighborhoods
often are impacted by power
outages. low power stations targeting
a specific neighborhood, small
town or county could broadcast
information on shelters, updates on
utility company progress, and weather
reports.
information on public safety and
transportation:
low power fm radio will provide an
effective fm alternative to the
limited radio facilities currently
used by public safety and
transportation service entities. this
new service will provide critical
real-time information to travelers
confronting emergency situations,
traffic patterns and accidents. for
numerous transportation entities,
broadcast radio is the only way to
convey messages on a timely
basis. necessary communications
include the announcement of not
only unforeseen incidents and
accidents, but also planned activities,
such as construction schedules and
the suggestion of alternate routes.
low power fm can ensure that critical
messages reach motorists
and will improve safety and
efficiency on the nation's roads.
new opportunities for schools and
universities:
throughout the country radio thrives
in secondary and higher
education, both as an educational
tool and a hub for local
communities. many schools and
universities, however, either do not
have stations or are limited to
operating cable, carrier current or
day-time only stations due to lack of
available fm spectrum and the
costs associated with maintaining a
full-power signal. low power
fm radio stations will create new
opportunities for schools to make
use of the fm band.
currently, over 140 colleges and
universities operate carrier current,
cable or day-time only radio
stations, in part because of lack of
available fm spectrum and the
associated costs of broadcasting
under current regulations. low power
fm will be a way for these
stations to expand their reach to
students living off-campus,
neighboring families, alumni and
other interested neighbors. other
colleges and high schools can explore
starting up new stations that
target the local geographic
community. college and high school radio
already provides tremendous service
to many communities; low
power fm will both create new
spectrum availability, lower the cost
of building and managing a station
and, hopefully, streamline the
application and regulatory process so
other students and communities
can benefit.
opportunities for small business:
low power fm stations will have large
implications for small
business. a significant small
business sector -- independent record
labels and musicians -- will have new
opportunities to gain exposure
on creatively-programmed stations
operating on low power fm.
currently, if a recording does not
fit into a centrally proscribed radio
format, it is difficult to gain
exposure via radio. without exposure
through radio, it is extremely
difficult to sell enough compact discs or
cassettes to build and support either
an independent record label or a
career as a musician. low power fm
stations would create new
opportunities for music that does not
fit into existing formats.
new model for small towns and niche
markets:
the lower technical requirements and
reduced start-up costs will
make small town broadcasting much
more viable. in many small
towns, a low power fm signal of
between 100 and 1000 watts
could reach the entire population of
a small town without the costs or
technological headaches of building
and managing a full-power signal.
similarly, in large metropolitan
areas specific communities - both
ethnic and generational - can be
targeted in a low power scenario. in
the current scheme, licenses are
either unavailable or the cost of entry
is simply too high; in the low power
fm model, local and niche
programming will become much more of
a reality.
the low power fm radio coalition
our board of advisors is made up of a
cross-section of individuals who are
interested potential broadcasters, and, in
some instances, current users of the radio
spectrum. we encourage the commission to
adopt a proposal for the
establishment of low power fm radio, and
will closely scrutinize any framework
the commission proposes in the coming
months. we also will educate the public
on the benefits and potential applications
of low power fm radio, and provide
forums for sharing ideas, effective
existing models, and solutions to potential
challenges low power fm broadcasters may
face.
incumbent broadcasters have expressed
concerns about the impact of low power
fm on their existing signals. these
questions, however important, are for engineers
to evaluate and therefore extraneous to
our basic request. if low power fm is
proven to critically disable incumbent
broadcasters' signals, it should not be
implemented. we believe, however, that
engineering studies will demonstrate that
low power fm is a viable mechanism to
serve the multitude of voices calling for
increased access to broadcast radio. we
look forward to reviewing the
commission's initial framework and
encourage you to move ahead on low power
fm.
sincerely,
michael bracy

well it looks like we can't donate to dameon records, so why don't we pick
something other than honor the earth b/c the list is already doing something
for that anyway. i like the idea of donating to an organization that helps
gay youth...seeing as how i am one, but that's not the point. any other
ideas let's go ahead and get them out there so we can decide what we want to
do pretty quickly.
