i know, and it annoys me to no end!  another good example was the episode of
saturday night live this past season that lucy lawless (xena) hosted.  during
the opening monologue/skit, lucy took questions from the audience.  nearly
every person asked her a question about xena's sexuality and half of them
looked like stereotypical lesbians.  one real diesel-dyke looking girl had on
a jean jacket with an ig shaming of the sun shirt underneath (the green one
with the two june cleaver-esque women chatting over the fence).  i laughed to
myself for a moment, but it does annoy me because it sends and/or reinforces
the message that if you listen to ig, you must be a lesbian.  sure, many of
us are, <g> but many aren't.

peace!

well, of course.  my god, you seem to be implying that lesbians can be
anything other than lesbians.  sure, i guess they could be lesbian musicians
if they really tried, but don't ever think they could be musicians first and

hi there,

i am not suprised at the least that vonda did not make
ref. to emily in the video. a friend of mine cathy has
a great band and was supposed to open for vonda at the
house of blues in chicago and at the last minute vonda
decided she didn't want another female to open for her
bc it might draw attention away from her.  i will
never listen to vonda after that. not even to hear
emily sing in a song. just my opinion.

hi everyone! thanks so much for all your response about songs that represent
ig's styles!! you are so awesome!!!

let me be greedy one more time, does anyone can make me a cd copy of the 9:30
club boot from 8/10/98 which includes the cut it out + wish you were here? i
was told there's one out there. my tape version starts to sound really
scratchy from playing it so many times.

it makes me mad when people only think of ig when they think of lesbians.
people always thought i'm gay when they find out i love ig. they should
mention ig when they think of great musicians!!!

thanks y'all

well, being an independent artist myself i just had to respond to this.
: )  there's some pretty great support these days for indie artists, and
the ones i'm going to list are just a few of the many who sell indie
music.

http://www.rahul.net/hrmusic/index.html  -- harmony ridge
http://www.cdbaby.com/ -- cd baby
http://www.secondfret.com/  -- independent musicians marketplace
http://www.independentsongwriter.com/  -- independent songwriter web
magazine
http://www.iuma.com/ -- internet underground music archive

and thanks to all of you who support indie music by your purchases and
your word of mouth.  we depend on you to keep the music alive, and
really appreciate all you do to help us grow and succeed as indie
artists.

peace~

a short poem, life lesson, all ig lyrics - lynn

here is a writer who has no voice
it's awful quiet here since love fell asleep
i just sit around the house and resist
maybe i was wrong

now i'm living honestly
i come with a softer answer
loving moves from the inside out

i'm trying to tell you something about my life
don't assume anything
it's only life afterall

i'm looking for a sacred hand
or possibly a friend
i make an offering of love

i'm not scared
by the fire in my blood
i don't care anymore

this ain't my home
this train is bound for glory
don't stand aside

what makes me think i could start clean slated
loving never grows tired
when i tried to make it more it was always less

do you belong to the human race
i said go, go, go
and i just wont go

don't stand aside
loving never grows tired
thanks y'all

subject:      so...i wonder......
mime-version: 1.0
content-type: text/plain; format=flowed

wow, its been awhile since i've listened to my ig cd's (i've been listeneing
to new cd's and stuff i got from the library.....)....wow, i missed that!
anyway....
anyone have any idea is the girls would have been in michigan a week ago or
so?  i hope its not too intrusive to wonder....see, one of my future
roomates *swears* they came into the old navy she works at.....
she's not a big fan, so she'd not be totally sure of what they'd look like
maybe...but she'd also not hallucinate it or something, like a crazed fan
like i would (of couse i guess i haven't but still....).
of course, i can't think of any reason they *would* be in michigan, unless
they were recording for acoustic cafe in ann arbor (but that dosn't explain
why they'd be in a mall in a detroit suburb), or maybe they were at a motown
sort of recording studio?  i'm sure detroit has studios....but that means
they've gone to a lot of places for recording.....
anyway....she looked up pictures later and she's almost sure....
but *why* , cuz i wouldn't be reporting a sighting if it was atlanta area or
something....(like i'd know....)......
i suppose if it was, it had to do w/ recording, cuz they were together.....
and its probably harder to come across *2* look-alikes together (ahh,
remember the look alikes?)......
so anyway....ooh, maybe that means there will be a really soulful sounding
song on the new record?   r & b sorta or motowny....how interesting!

also....i had an ig dream!!  sorta....
well, ok, so i was riding motorcycles w/ my old high school marching band
announcer (mr klienhenz for whomener cares, and i bet jill dosn't even know
his name so noone does), and some jerk comes up and stars kicking his bike
and stuff then he follows me back to my house where everybody loves the jerk
who kicks bikes and i hate him and i wanna call the police, but then i
realise its time for me to head out to go to pick up my friend for the janis
ian concert but i had to stop at a graduation party first so i stop there
and while there my motorcycle somehow breaks down at the party and i feel
bad cuz i'm gonna miss the lovely janis and i will be (accidently) blowing
off my friend, but then i find out that the indigo girls are playing at this
graduation party and i feel so bad and i'm fighting guilt cuz i'm missing
janis and my friend but dammit, the girls are right there on this person's
porch so i should be elated and besides, this is a smaller venue for
soemthing they're used to so...and i can't leave anyway.....
but i hurt my neck watching cuz it was a really high porch.....

yeah but i think i woke up right around the time they played.....

that was a bit non-punctuational.....
oh well, its weird for a few reasons, 1) i don't have a motorcycle, and i
doubt mr klienhenz does either, 2) *why* would i be hanging out w/ my old
band announcer, i dunno...his wife looks like weird al yankovic though......
3)we were on the highway when that guy started bullying us, and i dunno how
we ended up in the median w/ this jerk picking on us....it just happened....
thats enough resons, but at least i saw janis ian for real a few days
later!!!!   that was wonderful fun!!   janis ian is so nice and amazing!
yea!
carol

mime-version: 1.0
content-type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"

don't get excited, i didn't see them in walmart or anything.  no, well, the
story starts a long time ago....in the car.... we had some electrical
problems, and one of the things that quit working was, of course, the tape
deck.  now, clare and i spend a couple of hours everyday in the car, going to
and between jobs (we clean houses), and it had gotten mighty quiet in the
car.... well, the tail lights quit working -- if my headlights were on, i
didn't have brake lights...if my headlights weren't on, i did not have brake
lights... so i couldn't drive at night, then my inspection sticker expired
and we had to scrape up the $ to get them fixed.  well, they got the lights
working and i got my inspection sticker...but the tape deck still didn't
work.  clare got inspired and bought all new fuses and replaced them all, and
hallelujah !!! the tape deck is back in action...and i get to have my girls
in the car... so i'm singing like crazy the whole time in the car this
week...and the amazing thing was that today (friday) we ended up with four
houses to clean, and we did it in record time...and though i'm wiped out
tonight, i have to credit ig for pumping me up spiritually (there really is
no other word to describe the experience) and enabling me to work like this.
i'm not spring chicken and i'm a big fat old dyke with arthritis and other
crap... but i did it.  the whole time i'm scrubbing the sink, i've got "world
falls" fresh on my mind and it just made it all so much easier...   and
though she wouldn't admit it, i think they have a similar effect on clare.
she asks me about certain lyrics sometimes... thinks about the messages...
and she did say that "virginia woolf" helped her deal with the whole idea of
death, and then her mother died... but she handled it well.  i know how the
music has helped me grow in my spirituality, and i think i can see it in
clare too. she knew full well that if she got the tape deck working again
that i'd be singing constantly w/ ig... and she did it anyway, so it must not
be too terrible...  she just won't admit that she's a fan.  i just wanted to
share this with y'all.
      i have a request:
if anyone on the list happens to be native american and knowlegeable about
what kinds of rituals and customs of a particular tribe (i'm shooting for
navajo, but if i find a good "consultant" from another nation i'd go with
that)...and wants to help me out a little with my novel... i'd appreciate it
a lot.  i just need a bulls**t detector to read a bit of text and tell me if
i've got bad info, so i can avoid making stupid mistakes.  and of course, i
would certainly give credit where credit is due.  of course i'm doing
research online, but i need an actual person to read what i've written and
tell me if i have it right.  that's all.  let me know, anyone.  thanks.

meeting jilly "prodigal spice" is quite the special event. one can never
underestimate how good rose p. will be with jilly c. in the room...

three words: rose - toads - 2/21/99

a recommendation: find this boot

(and never ask rose p. to do an ig cover!)

subject:      a hot night in buffalo.......july 3,
1999 at nietzsche's......(long but hopefully interesting)....
x-to:         word for the day <wftd-owner@listbot.com>,
              catielist <catielist@cgrg.ohio-state.edu>,
              indigo girls nigc list <indigogirls@egroups.com>

after weeks of preparation, the night began on an ominous note.......at 9pm
i discovered that there was no sound/light person to run the club's mixing
board and stage lights.......instead of a leisurely sound check i was faced
with a mad dash to my home (midway between buffalo and niagara falls) to
retrieve my personal sound system which reulted in at least a half hour's
delay in the start of the show.......unfortunately, two of the performers
(aerin tedesco and rose bond) fell ill, possibly due to the effects of the
hot and extremely humid weather........also lost in the snafu were my plans
to make a soundboard recording to capture the night for posterity.....

mari anderson opened the show and totally captivated the smallish but
extremely attentive crowd with her great songs and her crystal clear
voice.......a voice that rings with conviction and evokes comparisons with
many of the greats.......joan baez, joni mitchell, sean colvin, mary chapin
carpenter all come to mind at various points, yet her melodies and lyrics
are uniquely her own........i had the pleasure of guesting on guitar on an
original blues tune whose name escapes me at this writing......

leah zicari, recently signed to rhapsody records and currently recording her
long-awaited first cd, played an extremely impressive set with sympathetic
backing provided by her two piece band.......leah's music is extremely
upbeat and radio-friendly with memorable hooks and catchy melodies.......she
closed her set with a blistering rock and roll song complete with a guitar
solo that would have made chuck berry proud......her website on aol is
currently inaccessible, even to her.......(no comment
necessary).........i'll post the link when the situation is resolved.......

pamela ryder took the stage at midnight.......she opened with a couple of
new songs that showed continued musical and lyrical growth.......her voice,
always impressive, seems to have gained in power and subtlety since i last
heard her.......

a broken guitar string gave me the opportunity to play a bluesy version of
dylan's "just like a woman" that i had worked out this past week.......with
a final chorus specially rewritten in honor of my friends......

she holds on just like a woman
sings her songs just like a woman
and she's strong just like a woman
still sometimes she breaks just like a little girl......

(katie suggested that i should post it.....)

pamela continued her set with several songs from her soulryder cd.......it
is so great to hear the way her music is a living, breathing
entity.......word inflections, melodies, dynamics, and tempos are all
subject to change, making each outing a unique performance in its own
right......pamela called me onstage at the end of her set to play the guitar
solo on her "california song", the first song we ever played together,
roughly four years ago........

one of the real joys i have experienced in recent years has come from
singing duets with some of the local artists i admire most.......several
years ago i devised a funky version of the beatles' "ticket to ride" that
took on an amazing dimension when pamela added her soaring vocal harmonies
to my bluesy baritone.......it was the first song we ever sang together and
it remains a thrill to this day........we ended the set with a smoking
rendition of "got my mojo working", which always gets a thunderous
reception.......(interestingly, 'mojo' was first recorded by a woman named
ann cole and later 'appropriated' by muddy waters when he toured with her in
the early 1950's)........pamela definitely steals it back........

i first heard katie miller about five years ago........i was browsing
through the blues section of a now-defunct local record store while a
locally produced compilation cd of music by women songwriters called "no
illusions" was playing on the store sound system.......(both kathy moriarty,
whom i had met during her stint with planet nine, and leah zicari, as well
as katie, have tracks on the cd)........i was enjoying the music as i
browsed, but one song stopped me in my tracks......"except around the eyes",
by one katie miller.......i bought the cd (which is still an all-time
favorite......katie told me last night that there was one offered for sale
on ebay recently), took it home and put "eyes" on endless replay while i
grabbed my guitar and started playing along......a short time later, i met
katie during an in-store performance and we have been friends ever since,
sharing dozens of gigs over the past few years........

as i prepared to leave the stage after pamela's set, i asked katie if we
could sing a song together at the end of her set.......she said "let's do it
now".......katie has another remarkably soulful voice that can convey the
entire spectrum of human emotions........the song we chose was one of my
compositions entitled "wish i didn't love you so much".........

katie then performed a captivating set of songs from her forthcoming cd,
which is slated for a september release.......some were so new that i don't
as yet know the titles.......one song, written for a close friend  who is
battling cancer, was particularly poignant and musically
exquisite........katie's main influences are suzanne vega, joni mitchell and
shawn colvin, but her voice and melodies and lyric content, as well as her
style of guitar playing, are strictly her own.........

i first met kathy moriarty at a time when i was just getting back into
playing music publicly after a long layoff.......i was totally astounded
that such rich sounding and lyrically deep music could exist right here in
buffalo........since that time i have learned that there are many more
deserving artists toiling in near obscurity in this
area.......unfortunately, so many friends have left for greener pastures in
the past few years......a trend that shows no sign of abating.........

kathy was visibly tired after an afternoon gig in allegheny state park and
an eighty mile drive back to buffalo, but she put on a hypnotic performance,
nonetheless.......her melodies floated gently on the still, humid air,
leaving those in attendance with a deep sense of inner peace.......katie
joined her at the end of the set for katie's beautiful "september leaves"
(one of my all-time favorite songs, which they will sing together on katie's
cd)........during kathy's set, we were joined at our table by susan rozler,
another "no illusions" alumnus, who will be celebrating her own cd release
party at nietzsche's on wednesday, july 7 at 9 pm.........

i ended the night with a cover of joni mitchell's "urge for going" (which i
learned from tom rush years ago),  a tribute to the woman who has been such
an influence on succeeding generations........the title was also indicative
of the mood of the audience at that late hour......it's amazing how fast
time passes when you're doing something you love.........

thanks to mari, leah and her band, pamela, katie, and kathy for a night of
music i will long remember......

peace,
tim

well, just back from the luscious jackson show in nyc's central park
today.  in light of java solis' recent post to the news list about
"luscious jackson in girlfriends mag", i thought i might add my own
experience.  through a contact at tommy hilfiger, i had managed to secure
a special vip pass to the show.  i was talking to a manager/roadie/tech
about the state of women's music and female artists in general.  we got
around to the subject of ig and he mentioned that ig and lj might do some
sort of collaboration.  it could be only 1 lj member or the whole band.
but it sounds promising.  lj's music could be a new direction for ig.

anyway, just adding more to pot.

i was just wondering about couples and "their" songs as i plan to make a cd
of songs for my wedding... whenever that may be.  anyone want to tell what
"their" song is?  it doesn't have to be an ig song, but it can be. like for
weddings/commitment ceremonies etc.  if you just want to tell what it is and
why this particular song is perfect for you as a couple, then just write to
the list.  if you happen to have a really great song and maybe one that
isn't very well known, i'd love it if you could send me the song name,
artist and the lyrics.  unless you have more than one song that is perfect,
and you can't decide, i'm looking for just one song per couple, so choose
wisely.  thanks a lot.

p.s. my song for us is "i will go there with you" by steven curtis chapman
(a christian singer),  my sweeties song for us would have to be "head over
feet" by alanis... as i totally swwept her off hers ;)

well, as much as i hate to say it, my wife's and my song isn't ig.  i know, i
know, i should be beaten severely about the head and shoulders with a large
slab of concrete.  but, for a non-ig song, it's actually a really good one.
it's a song by george strait (bearing in mind that country is among my top 3
least favorite musical styles).  if i remember right, it's called "i cross my
heart."  it's on the soundtrack to pure country.  my wife heard it on the
radio once not long after we met, and right then and there declared to nobody
in particular that that was the song to be played at our wedding.  i didn't
actually get to hear it until several months later, but i was forced to
agree.

okay, enough random rambling from me for now...

we now return you to your list, already in progress....

i would have to say (strangely enough) that my song with a former(?)
boyfriend is candlebox "far behind."  not only was it played almost every
time we went to play pool at our favorite bar, but it seems to well
explain the ways in which we changed after i moved 2000 miles away for
school.

our song is ice cream by sarah maclachlan
kirsten and i became best friends (we used to be just acquaintances) when i
was very depressed and suicidal.  she saved my life.  then she hit a bad spot
and i saved hers.  as we're going through all this we really got to know each
other and our friendship blossomed into something more than either of us
could have dreamed of.   our song describes it perfectly.... i can send the
words to anyone who wants them.  actually, i'll just put them here.....

your love is better than ice cream,
better than anything else that i've tried.
your love is beter than ice cream.
everyone here knows how to cry.

it's a long way down.
it's a long way down.
a long way down to the place where we started from.

ooooh oooooooh.......

your love is better than chocolate,
better than anything else that i've had.
your love is better than chocolate,
everyone here know's how to fight.

it's a long way down.
it's a long way down.
it's a long way down to the place where we started from.

more oooooh's

thanks fer listening :)

hey...

<<i was just wondering about couples and "their" songs as i plan to make a
cd of songs for my wedding... whenever that may be.  anyone want to tell
what "their" song is?>>

oooh, i like this one - i'll bite :o)

i just checked with my babe and we think that we have lots of them because
our whole relationship has been surrounded by them. and our wedding tape
(which, i might add, is as close to perfection as humanly possible) is in
the car, so i can't even consult that.

i'm gonna go for 'you just can't smile it away' - as performed by the
beautiful south ('twas written by bill withers):

"you just can't smile it away.
it's much more than passion,
it's love.
and i've heard some people say,
they've seen love move mountains..."

i must now resist the temptation to list others.

neil
@}--,--'---

ps. the other big 'our song' in my life was "you really got a hold on me" by
smokey robinson and the miracles.... and no, that doesn't count as two
choices 'cause i said so :o)

abi's page!!! http://www.netreach.net/~andineil/abi/abi.html
currently in neil's cd players:
willie dixon "poet of the blues"; boo hewerdine "baptist hospital"; michelle
shocked "mercury poise"; scott joplin "original piano rolls"
song of the moment: "fred astaire" by clive gregson.

*heh*) and she was kinda taken aback cause i had never really done that
before (oh give me a break - we've only been dating about 2 months!) but
she was commenting how i could dance like that for her any time i wanted
to *heh* woo hoo for that.

okay i'm done...i'll go daydream about some more scenarios now.

oh boy!   church was actually nice for once!
the dippy priest said some cool things in the homily (he's generally pretty
nothing, but he was talking about philosophy and how he dosn't like alan
greenspan cuz he likes ayn rand too much....)...
but of course  better was that we sang finlandia.  not too patriotic i was
thinking, but i was thinking "this sounds familiar."  and my mom said "gee,
its for finland!" and then it occured to me ig sang it! hee haw....
now, the problem is, i've never *heard* the ig version, except for bits on
watershed....so i need it! (i could have harmonized then!)
all i have is sibelius's orchestral version on record, which is good and
all, but still not ig.....
so, who's got a good boot of it to trade?

this song would be beautiful for any couple.  it's called "for emily whenever
i may find her" and it's by simon & garfunkel, sung by art garfunkel.  the
melody is just as beautiful as the words.

what i dream i had:
pressed in organdy;
clothed in crinoline of smoky burgundy;
softer than the rain.
i wandered empty streets
down past the shop displays.
i heard cathedral bells
tripping down the alley ways,
as i walked on.

and when you ran to me
your cheeks flushed with the night.
we walked on frosted fields of juniper and lamplight,
i held your hand.
and when i awoke and felt you warm and near,
i kissed your honey hair with my grateful tears.
oh i love you, girl.
oh, i love you.

i can't help it, all these posts with "your song" in the subject area keep
reminding me of a decidedly unromantic  noncouple-y slater kinney song called
"your song." anyone know it? really incredable. good break up song actually.
the best part is the way carrie (the singer) screams! oh wait, this is the ig

gay marriages are legal minnesota.  i think there might be a state on the
east coast, but i am not sure.  do you live in st. louis city?  if you do you
can register as domestic partners.  this meaning you are given the same
rights any family member would be given.  for example if you or your gf were
in the hospital you have the same rights as family.  hope that helps you some.

gay marriages are currently not legally recognized in any state in the
country. i don't believe there are any countries even that will recognize
a gay marriage. i seem to recall that the netherlands was considering it,
but i'm not sure if the law passed or not. a few municipalities will
perform a registration of domestic partnership, but that's about as good
as it gets.

sorry for the bad news folks. btw, if you live in california, be sure to
vote no on the knight initiative that comes on the ballot in march of
2000. it is a law that strives to define marriage as only between a man
and a woman, and would prohibit or at least make very very difficult any
future attempts to legalize gay marriage at the state level.

i'm pretty sure gay marriages are legally recognized in the netherlands
and denmark, but no state in the u.s. has yet to legalize such unions.

gay marriages are legal in the netherlands.  i was there in january.  it was
chilly but really nice... my gf and i are thinking of going there to get
married when the time comes :)  my ? is whether or not it will be recognized
back here.  i mean if a straight married couple comes here their marriage is
recognized, right?  i dunno... this country is weird.   on a side note, a&e

hey y'all.

there is currently nowhere in the world that grants gayfolk the right to a
legal marriage.  in the netherlands, there is something of some kind of
equivalent available, but even there some priveleges are denied, such as the
ability to adopt children or even to be artificially inseminated.  we've
still got a whole bunch of work to do!

a gay marriage (or union or whatever it's called in the netherlands) will not
be recognized legally here.  it doesn't count for immigration, insurance,
hospital visitation, inheritance, or anything else.  doma had a lot to say
about that, and many states are passing laws to make sure that should any
other state (ie hawaii)  allow gay marriages, they won't have to recognize
them.  man, now i'm getting depressed myself.  basically, as it stands now,
we're all sol, legally.

<climbing up on soap box>
<clearing throat>

hey y'all.  i don't know if anybody else's local pbs station has shown these
2 programs yet, but here in seattle we got a chance to watch them.  the first
one, it's elementary, is a program put together as an aid for teachers trying
to introduce discussions about homosexuality into their classrooms and
curriculums.  it's about 90 minutes long, but here they edited it down to an
hour so they could have a half hour live discussion between one of the
seattle school district's spokespersons and a representative of an "ex-gay"
group and the founder of an anti-gay parents association.  following
immediately was the second program, suffer the children, a half hour direct
response to it's elementary.  this program, produced, directed, starring, and
distributed by a homophobic right wing group calling itself the american
family foundation, did not so much rebut the statements and ideas of it's
elementary, as spread more homophobic rhetoric about gays and lesbians trying
to recruit the youth of our country.  the majority of the nonsense spewing
from this man's mouth centered around the statement that homosexual advocates
were "force-feeding" the "homosexual agenda" to our children.  immediately
following this was another live discussion group, including the presenter of
suffer the children (forgive me, but for the life of me i can't remember the
jerkweed's name), a representative of the national gay and lesbian alliance,
the same lady from the first discussion group (the "ex-gay" crusader), and a
member of the seattle city council, who is a lesbian and a mother of 2 with
her partner.  this one i could only watch about halfway through.  it was
late, and i could only stand to listen to so much intolerance at one time.
at the end of suffer the children, however, the american family foundation
gives it's web address:  www.aff.com.  i strongly recommend that everyone out
there check your local listings for these programs, and immediately responds
to the aff informing them that teaching our children racist, homophobic,
anti-semitic, or otherwise discriminatory and bigoted points of view and
beliefs is the single biggest threat to the sanctity and safety of our
country, not the teachers in our schools helping our children understand
that, as one woman in it's elementary put it, "people are, and everyone
should have the freedom to just be.  the way it is is the way it is, and we
can't change that, we just have to learn to respect and be tolerant of it."

<climbing down off soapbox>
<sheepish grin>

okay, i'll go away now...

hey, y'all......

jill's message, and the recent thread on gay marriages (and yet another
right wing hate group targeting loving couples as their adversaries), have
been deeply moving........unfortunately, there is no reasoning with those
who believe they have god on their side.......

i wanted to share a message of hope.......

one of my closest friends was hospitalized two years ago after a suicide
attempt.........in the aftermath, she found renewed strength and eventually
found her soul mate, a woman who had been waging her own uphill battle
against the effects of lupus........

they became life partners last august in the most beautiful wedding ceremony
i've ever witnessed.......their story is a universal one of the triumph of
the human spirit over seemingly overwhelming odds.......

i wanted to write a special song for them, but as the wedding date
approached, neither words nor music would come.......it was a mere one day
before the wedding when inspiration finally struck.......the melody and
lyrics seemed to come through me rather than from within me.......i'll share
it with you now.....

peace, love, and harmony.......

love will find a way

it's been a hard road you've traveled
with many bends along the way
there have been times you've unraveled
when all your dreams fade to grey
but still you carry on
for one whose love you've found

love will light your way
until the dark fades away
and tomorrow's yesterday
love will find a way

now all your past is behind you
as you begin your new day
your mirrored self stands beside you
and by your hand leads the way
a new road you have found

hey all.
still looking for someone out there that i'm somewhat familiar with (read:
someone i'd trust not to disappear with our tapes) who could master these
cincy sst boots that shelley and i recorded last year.  together they make
the full show, including opener shonen knife and even little bits of a
really-hard-to-hear-above-the-public-transportation soundcheck.  i'm told
there is a version of this boot meandering around out there, but it's got
songs cut.  i'd like to get the complete boot out to you guys (if anyone
cares this late in the game), as it's an incredible show, but i need someone
with cooledit or a comparable program to help out and master this thing.

oh.  and.  when i was at i think the cincinnati show (maybe cleveland), i
met this woman who was also booting the show.  we exchanged email addresses;
hers was scoobedu@aol.com; her name was amy.  anyhow, i tried to email her
at the time, and she apparently disappearred or is pretending i don't exist.
i would like to hear how her boot turned out.  if she happens to be on
this list, or if any of you know who this woman is (she's a major ig fan,
she and her girlfriend had been roadtripping around several states to see
the sst tour), please let me know.

what allison said is correct.  i think a significant fact is
that even in the places in the world where "domestic
partnership" is recognized, even if they are granting all the
same rights to the gay and lesbian couples (the netherlands is
on the verge of doing that) they still won't call it marriage.
just that, makes it uneven.  i don't want a "domestic partner".
that sounds cold and sterile.  i want a wife.  i want to get
married.  nowhere in the world is that allowed me or any of us.
that is really significant.

i watched both shows. if you have the opportunity to buy the video "it's
elementary", i can attest it is well worth it. kcts actually got alot more
flack for airing suffer the children than for it's elementary. i really do
love this area. as far as i know, kcts was also the only public station to
air stc (hence, all the flack). they aired it to launch their "many faces,
many voices campaign. i myself was quite upset but after watching the show,
i think it is good they aired stc. shows the homophobes for what they are.
the moderator just could not see why the afa and the woman for "parents for
responsible schools" (who is also involved with one of those infamous
"ex-gay" groups) had a problem with teachers learning how to deal with the
gay issue in the classroom.  these guys are like "heaven forbid tolerance
for gays is taught in the classroom! why should my child be taught to
tolerate gays when it goes against everything i am teaching them at home?"
huh?

i would love to see some footage of panels held 30, 40 years ago relating to
race. i can bet the arguments were exactly the same.

i'd also love to find out if there is a lawsuit against afa for copyright
infringement of ie. it appeared to me that at least 65% of stc was simply
scenes from ie. and i know they didn't give afa permission to use the
scenes. therefore, it would seem to me the producers of ie would have a
strong case to sue afa out of existence.

i thought the two homophobes were sufficiently shredded by everyone else.
tina podlodowski did us proud and i can bet the anti's were ready to bolt
when they found out that not only is she a city council member, not only is
she a lesbian (an out lesbian at that), not only is she a mother of 2
children, but she also professed to be a christian. the guy from the other
group in support of teaching respect for all was actually a mamber of glsten
(gay lesbian straight student teacher education network). and the woman from
the first discussion was also very good at diffusing arguments from the
"ex-gay" woman.

not to mention it would be held unconstitutional because the supreme court
long ago said separate but equal is neither. i was educating my new-found
brothers about why it is important for us to be able to get legally married
and i'm glad to say they seemed to "get it." it amazes me how much educating
still needs to be done on this issue. for instance, something i always hear
is "i thought you already could get married." well, we can, in several
forward-thinking churches. but that does not grant us the same legal rights
and responsibilities as hets who get married.

i'm crossing my fingers that vermont doesn't fall apart like hawaii did. i
don't get it. it's not like marriage is a commodity with a limited amount.
so what is the big deal? oh, that's right. marriage is all about procreation
and not love. uh, we'll have over 6 billion people on this earth this
october. not to mention there are plenty of married couples who don't or
can't have children. we are no longer living in an agrarian society so the
need to pop out more kids is hardly the same.

"gay marriage has traditionally been between a man and a woman." only if you
look at recent history. besides, i have problems with any values that teach
that love is wrong (well, besides those who work to end age of consent laws
so they can take advantage of kids).

ok -- i can already feel the flames from this one -- don"t kill me, but
the sheer definition of the word marriage, as stated by webster's new
dictionary is as follows:
+++the institution under which a man and a woman become
legally united on a permanent basis.+++
so therefore, by definition, same sex "marriages" do not exist.  you can
call your sacred commitments to each other anything you want -- but until
you change the actual meaning of the word, it's literally not possible.
besides, why do you need a title to make you happy with the one you have
chosen to love?  you know what's in your hearts -- and you know that some
people can and will never quite understand it.  be happy knowing you have
someone to spend life with, and don't waste time with what name society
gives your partnership.   what do they know, anyways?

definition of marriage from merriam-webster: an intimate or close union

i don't care what society calls our union.  however, i would like the
following privileges:

1) joint income tax returns
2) health insurance coverage for my partner
3) next-of-kin privileges in the case of a health emergency

i am accorded none of this simply because i am in a union with another
woman.  that hardly seems fair.

"gay" used to mean "happy" & had nothing to do with homosexuality, so the
argument that webster's definition exempts same sex marriage doesn't hold up
very well.  we have changed the definition of many words over the years, and
we can rewrite any of webster's narrow-minded definitions now as well.

<<be happy knowing you have

gives your partnership.   >>

i am happily "married," sure... however, i am currently unemployed & as far
as society is concerned, i'm not very worthy of any of the things my partner
can take for granted.  for example, if we were "legally" married, i wouldn't
have to go thru my savings trying to keep my health insurance up to date.  it
isn't about happiness, per se.  i've got that.  what i want is equal rights
under the law.

but 'definitions' are in themselves human constructs...just think of the
yearly "news/interest" stories about the words that do and don't make the
cut in the new edition of the dictionary...words change meaning over time,
through social changes, mis-use, dis-use and any other number of reasons.
and language is a function of society...one culture has 14 words for snow, i
have one.  there are words i can say in spanish that have no direct
translation in english (and vice versa).

so i don't think the "dictionary" argument holds up too strongly.

take care,
shel

this is not a flame but more of a "huh ???"

look, i am so sick and tired of people who think we want to rewrite legal
history by making it legal for same sex couples to get married. all we want
are the same rights and privileges that straight couples have, we want the
house, the two kids and all of those other white picket fence things that
most of the straight couples that i know often take for granted.  hell, my
married mother has a lover and still gets to file a joint tax return but i
can't.  we dont "need" a piece of paper, all we are asking for is legal
recognition of our unions and yes, as much as people profess that it is the
love that matters, deep in our hearts we all are longing for that wonderful
security that the rest of the world gets to enjoy, the knowledge that in our
old age, we dont have to worry about other family members will kicking us to
the curb, or not be able to properly mourn our partner because legally, we
have no rights.  in the city that i live in, lexington, ky, my town council
is voting on an amendment to stop discrimination based on people's sexual
orientation and gender identity in housing, jobs and public accommodations.
this is a wonderful first step towards equality, but damnit we want more.
we demand to be respected and to be allowed to do the simple things in life,
i dream that someday, i will be sitting at my kitchen table with receipts
pilled all around me struggling over a joint tax return with my legally
wedded wife, but for now, i will sit back and let h&r block file my single
status tax return while i hang my head in disgust of our "legal" system.

climbing down off my soap box for now.....

dorothy001,
out of the ones you have listed, emily has language or the kiss for
overall, but if you are dealing with younger people everything in its own
time works.  amy has chickenman or fugitive.  possibly on longer reflection i
would choose others, but that is my immediate gut reaction.

ok, i can't resist, i love a good arguem... er, discussion...
*warning - some of this may just be neily playing devils advocate*

i know this really has nothing to do with this straight white guy, but...

i have absolutely no problem with gay life partners having the same legal
protection and rights as straight married people. aside: someone was saying
about filing a joing tax return - y'all do know that people are getting
divorced (but otherwise living together) because there are sometimes tax
advantages to not being married.

for what it's worth i think marriage is a sacred institution that should be
taken v. seriously, which is why i don't think that couples living together
outside of that should have similar protection, although i'm known i'm
probably in a minority among my peers.

the trouble is, while i think there should be such an institution for gay
people, i just can't see it being called a marriage. marriage is such a
symbol of man+woman, that, i don't know, something just doesn't seem right
about using the word for anything other. not that i have any answers
(although union + united always seem like they could be kinda romantic).

but,  see, on the other hand i don't have anything against the use of
husband and wife within a homosexual context. to me lesband just sounds,
well, crap (too gimicky and contrived).

i guess if a lady (i really wanted to say chick here, but i though not
everyone would under stand the post-ironic world i live in) says she's
married, it's assumed (by most) she's talking about a bloke. but if she
refers to her wife, then it's obvious she's not. i'm all for less confusion.
which is also why i think 'ms.' should only be used on junk mail and married
people should have the same last name, although let's not go there now, 'k?

we all know i could go on, but i'll shut up before i offend anyone else :o)

peace (and girl scout samoas cookie ice-cream)

i think what's more important then joint income tax returns, health
insurance coverage for partners and next-of-kin privileges is that when a
country makes something illegal it influences society to think it's wrong.
so, the fact that gay marriages aren't recognized reinforces negative
opinions of gays and lesbians in general.

also...

i was very impressed by the it's elementary program and the way the
students responded. what i got out of the, "suffer the children," program was
that their main argument is that it is not right to teach kids of religious
familles that they are wrong for not accepting the gay lifestyle as okay. and
that is probably the best argument that could be made to not teach children
in public schools about homophobia and gay & lesbian issues. however, that to
me says that you need to take a delicate, careful approach to bringing the
subject into the classroom which only affirms the attempts of the "it's
elementary," program.
