hi, everyone! i am an avid ig fan and i am heading off to college next month
(ohio university). i was wondering if you guys could give me some
suggestions of artists to check out who remind you of the indigo girls. they
don't need to be exactly like them or anything--just the same type of music.
being on this list has made me realize that i have a very limited and
sheltered music collection. i also like tori amos, sarah, melissa, and
natalie merchant. but i would love to have some less popular but just as
good music to take with me. thanks!
melody

subject:      hershey lilith fair (somewhat long)
mime-version: 1.0
content-type: text/plain; format=flowed

here's another lilith fair adventure:

last year, i went to the los angeles/pasadena lf--and it was hard to compare
the two, since the only artist that played at both was sarah.

it was warm, a little sticky, and there was the biore booth right at the
entrance.  free face cloths and temp. tattoos saying "girls rule" with a
crown on top. :)  i was late, and missed out on the lilith fair sampler of
the new artists, etc.--but i made a beeline toward the tower records booth
for rose polenzani's "anybody" cd and the daemon records big bang
sampler--yay!  (thanks for letting me know 'bout the bonus, you know who you
are.)  so, i finally get to hear hothouse flowers and other daemon artists.

while i stood in line at the tr booth, i listened to kendall payne (great
voice and music).  it's amazing how many artists' names i recognize now,
since i've been an ig fan and on this mailing list.  i looked briefly at
luscious jackson's newest cd, and other cds by jane siberry, kate bush, lisa
germano, dar williams, cry cry cry, et al.

i briefly skimmed through the booths and noticed they had the same
fare/products as last year--then i stood in front of the village stage to
wait for juliana nash's set.  she played with her two-member band,
collectively known as talking to animals.  she sang these songs:  jump on my
train, maybe street, witness, consequence, you remind me of myself.  took a
pic with her, she offered a 1996 sampler, and i had her sign it.

me-shell ndegeocello's set i completely missed because i was frantically
looking for $3.50 lemonade, and felt completely dehydrated.  but, later, i
heard her play bass in one of sheryl crow's songs, there goes the
neighborhood.

the pretenders were awesome, but, of course, the majority of the audience
was there for the latter three main stage acts: dixie chicks, sheryl crow,
and sarah.  chrissie hynde got the crowd going the past three of their
well-known songs: i'll stand by you, don't get me wrong, and back on the
chain gang (this is a cover, right?).

the dixie chicks got the crowd into a frenzy--i was in the midst of writing
a postcard and was in poetic thought.  dc was energetic and fun and had the
crowd sing-along.  (but, i'm still not a fan of country.)  they sang this
wild song about earl--and they sent it out to wifebeaters--it was really
wild the way we reacted to the lyrics about having earl dead.  we mutually
hate injustice.

sheryl crow was a blast--here's her setlist:
change
my favorite mistake
you don't bring me anything (but down)
every day is a winding road
hello (or something like that)
can't cry anymore
if it makes you happy
strong enough (w/ sarah m.)
the difficult kind
there goes the neighborhood

it was nightfall by the time she came on--and they turned on the huge video
screens for her and sarah's sets.  it had been a long, hot sticky day, and
during "you don't bring me anything but down" the rain started to fall--the
audience cheered and continued to dance around appreciatively.  sheryl said
something about mother lilith looking down on us.  the rain fell for almost
the entire length of her set. can't cry anymore is a personal fave, and i
just beamed after the song was over.  the audience could sing "if it makes
you happy" since sheryl half-talks and sings (awww, i shouldn't be such a
harsh critic) because indeed, it was a highlight.

sarah mclachlan forgot a few words on the verse she sang of strong enough,
and smiled goofily.

sarah's set included all the songs i heard last year in l.a. but she had
angel as her encore this time, instead of adia.  she began with possession;
then--everybody (don't know title), hold on, adia, i will remember you, ice
cream, building a mystery, sweet surrender, fumbling towards ecstasy;
encore-angel--then they all came out, minus chrissie and sheryl, including
mediaeval baebes (from england, very celtic, similar to lorena mckennit
(sp?) except acapella at times), juliana nash, dixie chicks (i never knew
wide, open spaces was about following your dream), splashdown, kendall
payne, et al.

they sang the song, "i shall believe", a cover by an artist unknown to me.

oh yeah--the mirrorball was on during fumbling--and poor sarah, a bug flew
into her eye during ice cream, and she sang/played the piano or guitar
through the next three songs with it, in her eye!  she got it out before her
encore.  maybe one day, i'll be the house doctor for a tour like lilith
(just a dream).  sarah got a 5-lb. hershey bar from the chocolate folks.

it was a very satisfying day, musically--danced around a lot, spent about
$20 on food/beverages--and got my ear treats for the day (cds & the
concerts).

love, diane - six days until stanhope, nj!  go, rosie!

a couple weeks ago, when i was on-call, i was reading the book of virtues,
edited by william j. bennett, and i stumbled upon the poem, new friends and
old friends, p. 330.  it starts:

"make new friends, but keep the old;
those are silver, these are gold..."

maybe you all discussed this when swamp ophelia came out, but do you think
emily knew the poem and quoted from it, or is it just a coincidence?

in power of two, amy sings in counterpoint to emily's bridge "oh, the shiny
little trinkets of temptation...":

"make new friends, but keep the old,
just remember what is gold."

diane :)

amy or emily were girl scouts when they were younger because this is a girl

just a thought..any comments? :-)

i can't believe that there isn't someone out there who wouldn't love to
have 2 sets of those wonderful limited edition 2-day tickets to the folk
fest. just think, you can see melissa ferrick (she rocks), catie curtis
(what a sweetheart), ladysmith black mambazo (so cute and talented that
i'd almost go back down the kinsey scale), and the every popular indigo
girls (no comment necessary here). if i don't sell these tickets, i can't
go to bumbershoot. you wouldn't want to see that, would you? i'm even
selling these puppies for $125. buy 'em for yourself, buy 'em for a
friend, buy 'em for that sad person wiout a sunday ticket who you'll meet
in line at the fest. but for goodness sakes, someone buy them. whew.

the josh touring with joan right now is the same josh who toured with the

hi!!!

wanted to see if anyone out there can help me with this:

i have seen on here before where people have written essays, research
papers, etc. for school on ig.  i am considering writing a speech and
implementing some info. and music for my final speech in class.  i want
it to be interesting and entertaining.  i cannot handle another heavy
topic, so thought this would be fun and get me an "a" all at the same
time.

anyway, my speech needs to be written like a research paper and needs to
be 12-14 minutes long.

this is where you can help!  i was wondering if anyone who has ever
written a paper would feel comfortable sharing it with me.  i am
especially interested in seeing the different angles people have taken
when writing about ig.

anyone who is able to help--i would really appreciate it.   feel free to
e-mail me off the list.

thanks!!!

kristen hall - real life stuff (not my fave kristen cd, sorry)
viva la diva - greatest hits volume i (just can't get into this, except for
"when   you're  ready")
terri binion - leavin' this town (good cd, just not into it)
sonia tetlow - reclaiming beauty (i like her better live than on cd)
neil young - mirror ball (cd w/pearl jam)
neil young & crazy horse - sleeps with angels
best of mountain stage - live, vol. 5 (w/ig - love's recovery)
green day - dookie
rem - out of time
edwin mccain - (w/solitude)

any takers?

peace!

i'm having some friends in town thursday before we all trek up to nff and we
want to go out thursday night to a lesbian bar/club in manhattan.  do any of
y'all know of good places to go?  i would prefer a lesbian bar or club to a

oriented) bar or club.

please e-mail me privately with a pertinent subject header so i don't delete

thanks so much in advance and sorry again.

oh, and i heard dar williams in the limited on saturday.  odd, i thought, but
way cool!!!!!!!!!

if you really want to get scared, list to worldwide shortwave

i don't know how many catie fans there are on the list, but i'm assuming
there are at least a few. i'm looking for a recording of her singing a nancy
griffith song, "gulf coast highway". i'd be thrilled if anyone could help me
out on this one. as far as i know, she's never recorded it, so someone would
have to have it on a boot from a concert. if anyone has any catie boots,
even without the song i'm looking for, i'm really interrested in trading.
here's my tape list if you want to check it out.

ps- is anyone going to see catie in ogunquit, me on friday or p-town on next

mime-version: 1.0

hi all--

i am de-lurking once again only to ask a fairly silly question...

does anyone have any great secrets (or even not-so-great secrets!) on
how to get to the front of the crowd at lilith for the ig set?
obviously, there are things like "camp out the night before" or "get
there super early in the morning", but i am just wondering if anyone
has been successful in other ways?

by the by, i will be at the canterbury park lilith on aug. 25th. i have
gone in the past and even got there pretty early once, but was not even
close to the front.

oh, and if you would prefer to e-mail me privately that would be great
cuz i am not sure that the entire list is interested?

thanks tons!!!!

there was a _short_ "behind the music" clip on ig on vh-1 a couple of years
ago... i'm talking like 60-90 seconds... it might've been before they decided
to start airing the long "behind the music" shows they do now... i don't
know.   it would be  awesome if they did a longer one on ig as they release
the new album...

an ex was a big fan and as far as i can remember, he was (is) the leader
of the rollins band.  but recently, he's spent a lot of his time writing
books and doing talking gigs.  i think he considers himself a philosopher
(of sorts) and mostly writes/talks about everyday life things from a
self-discipline perspective.  from what i've seen/heard, he was a
rocker in the guns 'n' roses, motley crue genre who suddenly woke up and
realized what he was doing to himself and his body.  so he cleaned up his
act and is now going around preaching purity and moderation to the masses.

correct me if i'm wrong...

is a god...

no, he isn't, but he is an incredibly talented performer:
the basics:
rule number 1 - never mention rollins and motley crue in the same breath.
very very bad. rollins was the lead singer for black flag, possibly one of
the best punk bands of the 80's - he went to high school with ian mckaye
(another godlike person from my high school punk loving days,) who founded
minor threat, sang with embrace, and fugazi, and started dischord records.
so the lessons from rule number one: go buy black flag's "wasted again",
"live 84" or "the first four years." and if you don't own any dischord
release - buy 13 songs by fugazi (some excellent music).

bonus points:  watch the movie "instrument"

actual igc: amy likes fugazi - i think it may have been a desert island disc
or a top ten from some year...

and what does have to do with rollins...uh, got side tracked.

black flag broke up in 86 or 87 - really sad day for music - rollins went on
to start his own band, appropriately titled, rollins band, and started
publishing some of his writings.

i guess that was rule 2. lessons would include buying "life time" by rollins
band or buying some of his earlier writings, but they aren't as good as his
later stuff.

bonus points: pick up a bootleg of rollins either live or spoken word before
1990.

big day in rollins life: his friend, and black flag roadie, joe cole, who he
was living with at the time and him get mugged. joe gets shot and dies -
it's really messed up to begin  to talk about it. rollins sterarted his own
publishing company (2.13.61) and writes black coffee blues, one of the most
edgy writings of american literature of the 90's. it's not kerouac or
ginsberg, but it's some pretty heady stuff.  after joe dies - he published
"now watch him die" and "seeing a grown man cry" nd basically - exposes his
soul in those works.

igc: emily used the phrase "black coffee" in the song winthrop.

stupid factoid: black coffee blues was on my honors thesis reading defense
list.

he also says some really gay rights positive stuff in those works - i guess
he was totally harassed by the lapd as his friend died and they assumed it
was his lover, really shows the oppressive side and looking at rollins -
about the last thing you's expect.

he released some other popular albums "end of silence" and weight. check him
out - definitely is saying something positive -

blah - go read - feed your brain!

peace -
mike r.

back in 97, when vh1 did a behind the music on lilith
fair, the girls were one of the artist segments (i
think they came right after sheryl crow).  but ig was
shown off and on throughout the episode, talkin and
stuff.  what i thought was kind of funny about that
show was how they kept with behind the music tradition
and tried to make everybody seem like they had had
just a terrible, terrible time, hitting absolute rock
bottom as they tried to make it in the music business.
(like melissa etheridge said when she hosted women
first last week, "watch my behind the music on sunday
to hear about my horrible drug addiction and the time
i lost everything in vegas...oh wait that never
happened to me".)

a few thoughts on the 100 greatest women countdown:
they didn't talk to as many different people as they
did for the 100 greatest artists countdown, so henry
rollins and nile rodgers and pat benatar spoke about
every other artist it seemed.  not to mention they
recycled their ig comments on joan baez and tina
turner from the 100 greatest artists countdown (and
what was that, melissa etheridge file footage from
'89?).

why would mle be a role model for ig? they both got big in the same year. i
mean, they may have crossed paths but role model? now correct me if i'm
wrong but wasn't mle pretty shy for many years about saying whether or not
she was a dyke? come to think about it, didn't the girls deflect such
questions as well?

now don't flame me...i love mle having seen her in concert 13 times and
meeting her twice and personally, i don't think one's sexual orientation is
anyone else's business but their own unless they choose to make it
otherwise. i also think that one's sexual orientation is not the sum of a
person but just a small part.

i guess what i'm getting at is they started at the same time and i am
unaware of either mle or ig doing anything really earth-shattering besides
bringing us their wonderful music until much later in their careers (like i
said, i'm unaware and i'm sure they did do alot of stuff early on but they
were hardly as well known back then).

omg!!! i just realized 1989 was 10 years ago! wow! how much has changed in
the past decade.

we just got all the hardware we need to take our recordings and process them
digitally.

and now that womad is over, we may be able to start processing our
recordings very soon (although this month has definitely filled up as well).
as soon as we are done, we will send a master off to tara and she will set
up the tree. hopefully, we can do this b4 sept.

i must admit, they are damn good recordings!

>>does anyone have any great secrets (or even not-so-great secrets!) on

i hate to be the rain on your parade (floodwaters on your lawn seats?)
but if your lilith is not general admission,
you're about 99.6% screwed.
security at these things is tighter than amy ray's harmonies.
and understandably so.  would *you* want thousands of girls tripping all
over their glittery, butterfly-headed selves just to fall at your feet?

don't answer that.

i did sort of manage it once, at the first lilith.  it was actually
accidental-- i'd been standing outside of the pavilion, but down near the
stage, when the girls came on and there was a mad rush as everyone thundered
to their seats.  i got caught up in the estrogen undertow and was swept away
on a current of summer's eve.  oh, i'm kidding.  i sort of checked my brain
at the gate and, in its leavetaking, the cotton candy that inhabited my head
at the moment decided to make a run for the front rows.
which i did.
it was a glorious three seconds.
and then he came.
bigger than thunder, but just as loud.
the security guard from dante's inferno.

my advice:  don't bother.  it's not worth it.  you'll get much closer to the
bad attitude of biff boy there than the shining smile of emily. suck it up
and remind yourself that it's lilith; it's not supposed to be good seating.
wait a little longer and they'll play a general admission show at some fest
sooner or later.  that's the time to pull out the big guns (but no cans,
bottles, cameras, or coolers)(ha) and camp out like you're still a girl
scout.

so anyhow
henry rollins fancies himself
a renaissance man
(musician, painter, writer)(the guy's got a book, i walked past it on the

which makes him think
he knows a rat's ass
about the female psyche.
since he's, you know,
so in touch with his inner female.

hi all:)

i came across a quiz in cosmo entitled "are you obsessed with appearances?"
this is the first question:

1. you're invited to a costume party. the theme is "come as your favorite
musician."
you dress as:
a. one half of the indigo girls, in a flannel shirt and jeans
b. madonna
c. lauryn hill

of course i would dress as an indigo girl, but that got the lowest scoring
for that question...for the lowest set of scores they told you that women who
say they don't care about their looks are often trying to cover up for
looking bad, and they proceeded to tell you how to improve your
looks...anyway...just thought you guys might like to know:)

pax, celeste

ps. does anyone have any idea what the name for the new album will be?

rose farrow and martine locke are (slightly) better known as "the velvet
janes", a crisp and groovy (ooooh, how sixties :)) folk group. and better
still, they hail from my home town of perth, western australia!

not much i can say but to check them out at http://www.velvetjanes.com.au/
or pick up their new cd, "opus no. 3". the web site has a link to download
an mp3 of their new single.

no mention of the girls on the website (i didn't look thoroughly though) but
they did do a national tour with ms ani difranco this year. that must be
good sign hey? but i must admit there are similarities between them and the
ig's styles... check 'em out!

oh.
well, in that case.
get there a full day (upwards of 20 hrs or more-- remember, you've got a
whole lotta girlies to be out-elbowing to the front, so time is your friend
in this venture) in advance.
camp.
camp a little longer.
it's best to do this in groups of at least two, that way, one of you holds
down the fort, er, spot on the pavement, while the other can trot off and do
important things, i.e. potty runs, autograph dashes, sulli drooling.
food and water are a necessity, although, the closer it gets to show time,
lay off the water.  can i repeat that?  thou shalt not guzzle thine h20.
side story:  at the detroit sst, which was general admission, i drank my
water.  this did not seem so monumentally bad an idea at the time, but after
they'd opened the doors and we'd wedged ourselves into the front row like
sardines in birkenstocks,
i had to pee.
like a racehorse.
so i de-wedged myself (the jaws of life would be helpful for this endeavor)
and ran off to, uh, powder my nose. (note no powder was involved.  i am not
a cosmo girl.)  so i come back, and
well well.
i can't get back into my spot.
my 'friend' i'd made in line, who'd "promised" to hold my spot until i got
back ("my girlfriend will just hold your place," said she) was not
relenting.  she wouldn't allow her (icky) girlfriend to get out of my spot.
in fact she was encouraging her to stay there:  "no," she would murmur,
underestimating my x-ray ears, "stay there, don't move, don't get out of the
spot."

evil had a face and it was on the dyke standing next to me.

which brings me to another very important point that you must never forget:
any "friends" you make in line are not friends.  they are  satan.  they are
henry rollins.  they are the big mean truckers who made obscene gestures to
you as you roadtripped to your lilith fair.  do not trust them as far as you
could throw anything.  no no noooo.
stick with the friends you've known outside of a concert setting.

when the doors/gates are finally opened, here's a few more tippies that may
help you slide right in like buttah:
sweet talk your door guard (please omit this step if you're a guy and so is
your guard.  nothing like good old small-town homophobia to throw a wrench
in the show).  that's right.  be cute and endearing and smile like you're in
an aquafresh commercial and love him like he's sulli incarnate.  when the
doors finally open and you make your mad dash, he'll be more likely to not
give a rat's ass that you're bounding away like the blair witch is on your
heels, and won't detain you, yell at you, or run after you (unless you've
been *too* sweet-talky, in which case, he may dash off to personally escort
you to the front row).
do not bring a backpack.  that way, you can bypass the bag check and get in
faster.  remember, time is your friend.  if you do bring a pack, have it
opened and neatly arranged so they can check it quickly.
nobottlescansorcamerasplease.
it's every man for himself.  run like you've never run before.  not that
you're likely to forget, but keep reminding yourself what your reward is:
being close enough to tell amy she's got falafel in her teeth.  so bust a
quadricep and book it to the stage.  run run run. do not stop running.
steps are no excuse (they have many varied surfaces upon which you can run,
the least of which is their flat top.  make use of those other, non-used
step surfaces, like the points.)  random stupid glittery butterfly-y girlies
in your way are no excuse.  mow them down.  are you not [wo]man?  do you not
roar?  are you about to let some dippy jewel fan get your spot?  i don't
think so.  hence, platform sandals are not conducive to the front row.
think converse, or, if you're not so indie rock, teva.

once you've got your prized standing spot (no one in the front ever *sits*),
you'll be feeling very claustrophobic.  the "aren't you glad you use dial?
don't you wish *everyone* did" commercial will flash across your mind
repeatedly.  you'll be sweating other people's sweat.  if you need space,
sit down.  right there.  on the ground.  all that's around you will be
random legs and feet.  kind of like being three again.  if you need air,
look up.  at the ceiling.  this will help you feel less cramped.  if you
must use the facilities, get your friends (your real friends) to hold your
spot.  i call this living large, i.e. taking up space just because you can.
ex:  "belle ruth, i've gottta dash for the port-o-let.  live large."  large
livers should widen their stance and be burly behemoths.  think big big
dyke.  your mantra: 'i am a big dyke, i am a big dyke, i can be all burly
and hold two persons' worth of floorspace.'  this is so necessary.  people
are freakin *ruthless* up there.

"the front row has a price and it's called 'sleep." -marivel danielson

only the brave will make it.
good luck, everybody.

hey all-
i loved this lilith "behind the music" and one of the main resons is
cause it presented ig in such a wonderful, "true to their spirit" way.
the narrator was talking about how the fair was getting some bad press
and how the different artists were not really meshing, not really
sharing in the spirit together.  then he said something to the effect
of, "it wasn't until the ig joined the line-up that this all changed."
and then several of the other artists go on to talk about how amy and
emily brought a wonderful energy to lilith, how they went around
knocking on everyone's dressing room door saying, "hey, want to come
play a song with us during our set?"  how they really brought a greater
sense of community to the whole thing.  i think we all know how
integral this sense of community is to the girls so i was glad that
"behind the music" made it known to everyone else who watched it, too.
thanks for listening!

indigo girls release tracks on next album

aug 3, 1999, 9:00 am pt

indigo girls
the indigo girls have finished up the recording of their seventh studio album,
now tentatively titled come on now social -- a lyrical reference to an amy
ray-penned track that didn't make the album.

in addition to previously-mentioned guests on the album (kate shellenbach,
natacha atlas, me'shell ndegeocello [allstar, april 8]), sheryl crow and joan
osborne have contributed vocals on a few tracks as well -- making the album an
all-out lilith fair hootenanny. john reynolds (sinead o'connor) produced the
album, tentatively due sept. 21 on epic records.

the album includes the 10-minute epic "faye tucker," as well as a hidden track
entitled "philosophy of loss" that closes the album. the first single from the
record is still undecided at press time.

here is the track listing for come on now social:

1."go"
2. "soon to be nothing"
3. "gone again"
4. "trouble"
5. "sister"
6. "peace tonight"
7. "ozilene"
8. "we are together"
9. "cold beer"
10. "compromise"
11. "andy"
12. "faye tucker"
13. "sister" (reprise)
14. "philosophy of loss" (hidden track)

regarding winthrop not being on the album... i believe i've read in a couple

recording, but that they've done it in the studio.  well shit.  i had my

of an album title to me- doesnt quite strike me as making a bit of since, but
whatever they feel... they're the indigo girls afterall....
good day to all,

i would have to say that there are some definate images of baptism in here.
touching the forehead.

also--the reference to ophelia, who "drowned" herself in love with
hamlet--which led to her ultimate psychotic state--and, her death.

also, the "all skate, now reverse," has always reminded of those young puppy
love skating days....perhaps referring to young love and the loss of.

if you touch her, she will fall regardless--perhaps the love being the touch
of deat--causing her to fall--or, the death of a younger self--the fall
indicating a fall from youth and a new beginning (baptism by water) into a
new life of self-awareness.

of course, i could be wrong--but, that's what i see in this song....can you
tell i was an english/theatre major?

interested to see what everyone else has to say......

touch me fall

all skate
now reverse

i'm waking from a dream
the neighborhood is green
all the sounds i've missed
all the years
come down to wedding death and fear
i'll i've heard has been in vain
like water on a stain
touch me
i'm so beautiful
rub your hands
across my head
just like this
come with me
now it's not worth it
if you don't
are you hiding
i am hiding

cypress moon
i'm bald in june
like the granite
in a stream
swamp ophelia
i'm torn down
let your waters
let me drown
touch me
i'm so beautiful
rub your hands
across my head
just like this
come with me
now it's not worth it
if you don't
are you crying
i am crying

jump jump
jump so high
watch me let you down
if i stumble
i will stumble
if i fall
i will fall
i'm trying to hold it
like rain in a river
everything is
getting bigger
better this
won't last forever
touch me fall
touch me fall

jump jump
jump so high
watch me let you down
if i stumble
i will stumble
if i fall
i will fall
i'm trying to hold it
like rain in a river
everything is

i wrote to kelly and gave her the lowdown on where to go to get info on the
9-03 show. then i thought, others might like to know. you can buy tix at
http://www.bumbershoot.org. a one-day pass is only $10 but i heartily
encourage you to get at least a 2 day pass (the event is incredible but i
warn ya, alot of people go to this event so you can expect crowds).

the most important thing to remember: once you get into the gates, head to
an information booth and ask them for a wristband. it is the only way you
will get into the stadium. the wristbands are free. they are simply a way to
do a little crowd control to keep things safe.

and another thing: we will have a booth at bumbershoot and 5% of our sales
will be going to honor the earth. but even if you don't buy anything, i'd
love to see some listees. and if luck goes right, we will once again be in
our regular spot inside the stadium on one of the ends.

now tentatively titled come on now social -- a lyrical reference to an amy

kind of disappointed that "boys just laugh" didn't make it to the album. i
love that song!!!

you nutty guys lost me somewhere.
what's mcc?

fyi (beat me senseless if this has already been mentioned), come on now
social was a line from a song that amy performed a few times back, called i
can get the girls but the boys just laugh.  in this particular line, she
was, i believe, speaking as the male trying to coerce her/the woman in
question into relenting and/or hooking up with him.  something like, "come
on now, social, you know i want you to be.../ come on now, special..."  does
it make sense now?

i doubt this will wind up being the final title.  it doesn't make much sense out
of context with the rest of the lyric, especially when that song's not even on
the album.  i remember they had announced a working title for an album before,
"benefit of the doubt", that never came to be, either.  i think it was for swamp
ophelia.

do i have the authorship of these tracks correct?

it always seemed to me that amy had written way too many songs for them all to
make it onto this next album.  hopefully, they've at least been recorded.  one
thing ig hasn't done much of that many other artists do is include a lot of
bonus tracks on their cd singles.  they had tended, instead, to include
alternate takes (acoustic versions, live versions or remixes) of songs already
on the album.  maybe this time they'll actually put unreleased tracks on the cd
singles.

how many other songs are we missing?

[ar]
chiapas bound
moment of forgiveness
nueva senorita
little darling (are we sure this isn't an obscure cover?  the narrative style of
it -- it doesn't actually have a chorus, does it? -- seems completely unlike
anything else she's written)
the boys just laugh
"weekenders" (song that amy "made up on the spur of the moment" at eddie's attic
11/98)
"?" (song amy did at variety playhouse 4/99 about prisoner on death row -- it's
a different song than "faye tucker")

[es]
winthrop
"?" (wasn't there some other piano-based song emily was performing late during
the shaming tour?)

[?]
the distance remains the same (is this an amy song or an emily song; do we know
in what time frame it was written, and does _anybody_ have it on a boot?)

did i leave any out?

"map" was the working title for sots (which is one of the things that make
the t-shirts from that "practice tour" so cool!).  it was based on gotm and
the number of locations mentioned in the albums songs (which became one
fewer when "winthrop" didn't make the cut).

i don't care much for the title "come on now social", but sots was odd too!

if you have some time to kill before the spac show that night, here's a
website for ideas:

www.saratoga.org

there's a vacation planner section to this website that lists all the
touristy things to do.  if you're feeling rich, go to the track.  :)  tis
the racing season, and with beautiful weather, it would be a great day!
downtown saratoga is pretty cool, too.  there's some cool cafes and
stores, and some historical stuff.

anyway, that's enough advertising out of me!

kelly,
going to be sleeping off newport and driving home on monday...

spinner <http://www.spinner.com> is playing rose polenzani on its new

backing vocals, and if enough people rate her highly they'll play her even
more.

and they play ig quite a bit too, i think mostly on the female focus channel.

come on now special, i said i want you to be
come on now social, you know i want you to be
you know i want you... [right here it's unclear whether there's maybe a

so, actually, not a real fun song at all.  when she played it at the 9:30

amazingly powerful, that one.  don't know if it'll ever make an album.

when i heard amy sing this song at eddie's attic last november she
prefaced it once (she sang it twice that night - one time during each
"show") by saying that she went to dinner or something with a guy
friend of hers and that she was kind of hoping it might turn into more
of a date situation rather than just a hanging out situation.  (by the
way, when she said this lots of women in the audience let out a gasp
and amy said something like "wow, you guys are hard core")  turns out
that the guy did not have the same hopes for the evening to turn into a
date and so i think this song incorporates a lot of the things that
might have been racing through amy's head that night, or the next day
or something.  her personal feelings and all the gender socialization
and stereotyping found in our culture.  as tara said, it is an intense
song, and sad  - "i ain't worth a damn."

i was listening to the 9:30 club boot yesterday on the way to a rehearsal
for an ig tribute show later this month (aerin tedesco and i are doing
strange fire, three hits, thin line, and cedar tree......will post further
details as the aug 28 date approaches)........it's amazing how quiet the
room gets during this song......i don't think i've ever heard a live
recording of ig where there was so little crowd noise......like everyone
there was holding their breath.......eerie and awesome........

hkf's,

so closer to fine closes pretty much every show now-a-days.  that wasn't the
case in the early days...  closer was an early song to get the fans all
riled up and then they usually closed with a cover like get together, all
along the watchtower, american tune, love of the common people... or
something like that.

so my question is what do you think they should start closing with instead
of closer to fine?  i believe a cover is good - but others would do for
sure.

here's my guesses:
a neil young song (dbtr or rockin' or others)
faye tucker
midnight train to georgia
strange fire
love of the common people (we can hope, can't we?)

so how's that for guesses?  i'm worried at this point they are so in a
groove to play ctf, it would be almost a let down for them not to play it...
i wouldn't be disappointed in the least, but maybe overall there might be
some people screaming "more!!!".  one way would be to play it in the middle
- and everybody would be "oh my gosh!!!  they can't play that song now!!!"
and then bedlam would ensue - or maybe there would be just a great show.

anyway,

well, i haven't posted here in a while... new relationship with a
mowhawked, tattoed, bull-ringed, lovely punk angel who's slam-danced w/
amy ray has kept me quite busy... but now she's back in atlanta saving up
the $ to move out to ca w/ me in the fall, so i have a few free hours...

so, since it's my 2 year anniversary of becoming queer & ecstatically
coming out to about 90 of my friends all on the same day, somebody really
wants to make me a copy of the famous 9:30 club boot, right? it has just
about every live ig song that i've always wanted to hear... wish you were
here, boys just laugh, etc. i'd love a cd copy, but would gladly take a
tape... i could trade a tape & postage, a copy of something you wanna hear
from my collection, (just try me, i've got several hundred albums) a copy
of my poetry book, (the 3rd edition will be printed up in sept) whatever.

excited for the new album, but listening to the self-titled at the moment
cuz it's just so classic.
peace, arjuna

good thread!

my suggestion:

i like 80's stuff, so maybe blister in the sun (i know a lot of people
cover it, but it's fun, damnit, and i like it!) or something fun along
those lines.  maybe an aretha franklin tune?

yes, i too am tired of the ctf closer.  though, i understand them wanting to
please fans that don't see them over and over again like some of us obsessed
ones.  i agree with mike - i'd *love* to hear "love of the common people" -
i've never heard it live. - i could stand a rockin' version of po2 also
though.

okay - i'll do 9:30 boots for the first 5 newbies to email me - more if you
promise chocolate.  no trades needed, only blanks and a sase, though if
anyone has a really good - i mean not crappy, suffragette boot, i'd be
interested in that.

lemme know,

the best shows i heard on ig boots.

i personally loved it when (1990-ish) they closed with american tune.  just
emily and amy, back out on stage, no guitars, holding hands and singing us
goodbye...

it would be amazing to see that again!

what could be more appropriate then "go"?
its 1) leaves you with a desire to go out and do something good, and 2)
tells you waht you have to do anyway, to go.....

i heard the girls cover "blister in the sun" at the now-infamous concert they
did (after one of our local high school's cancelled their concert--sure
you've heard of that) in columbia, sc.

the audience was filled with young teens....none of them knew the song!  you
most certainly could pick out the children of the 80's in the audience
(myself being a proud child of the 80's)....

(and, my news station, here in columbia, sc actually got to interview the
girls...woohoo!  wish i could have gone on that shoot!).

i love hearing them close with closer to fine, as that was my theatre dept.'s
theme song.....

however, i also adore "love's recovery" as a slower close......or, possibly
"land of canaan."

hmmmm....so many choices!

:-)  ctofine

igc:  i think this was mentioned before, but. . .

i was flipping through the july/august issue of mother jones and on the
inside back cover is an ad for the upcoming 1999 spitfire tour, including a
picture of amy taken from last year.  amy has reportedly committed to the '99
tour.  the ad says the short fall 1998 tour, which included two amy-attended
dates, was a "pilot" for the upcoming fall 1999 tour, a 20-city national
college tour.  (for those interested, i have a boot of amy's clemson u.
speech about gay issues, at which she also performed "go")

see the spitfire site for more details:
http://www.spitfiretour.com

nigc:  also listed among the speakers for the '99 tour is julia butterfly
hill, an environmental activist who has lived 180 feet above ground in a tree
since december 10, 1997 to protest logging of the headwaters grove of old
growth redwoods in northern california.   julia, only 23 when she began her
treesit, is an inspirational speaker and human being.  i had the privilege
rather recently to speak with her, via cell phone.  her message of love and
respect for our earth is empowering.  you can check out her website for more
details of her mission and commitment to saving our precious ancient
resources,

pbs/warner bros. records to release all-star 'climb against the odds'
soundtrack

award-winning breast cancer documentary to premiere on national public

television

burbank, calif., aug. 5 /prnewswire/ -- pbs records, an alliance between the
public broadcasting service and warner bros. records, will release the
soundtrack to the award-winning documentary climb against the odds on august
24th.  the soundtrack is being released in anticipation of the documentary's
premiere on national public television in advance of october's national
breast cancer month.

artists lending their words, voices and music to this magnificent documentary
include k.d. lang, paula cole, the indigo girls, mary chapin carpenter, beth
nielsen chapman, nancy griffith, diane warren, billie myers and sweet honey
in the rock.  cellist jami sieber composed an electric cello piece
exclusively for the film and an original theme song was written and recorded
by karen pernick.  the original score was composed by emmy-winning composer
laura karpman.  all songwriters, publishers, artists and record labels have
contributed their songs, music and recordings gratis for inclusion in the
documentary and the soundtrack album.  skywalker sound, a division of lucas
digital ltd, llc donated all facilities necessary for audio post-production
for both the cd and film.

"whatever you need ... " responded the indigo girls (amy ray and emily
saliers), when they were told of the project.  the two grammy award-winners
were the first artists to offer their music, "if they can climb a mountain,
we can give them our song.  making great music is wonderful and now we have
the power to make history together."

climb against the odds is a project of the breast cancer fund, a progressive
national non-profit organization dedicated to eliminating breast cancer.  the
documentary is presented by public television station kqed/san francisco and
will air on public television stations across the country. climb against the
odds is distributed by american public television, a major source of
programming for the nation's public television stations.  viewers should
check local listings for air dates and times in their area.

a major supporter of the project has been the lilith fair concert series
spearheaded by singer-songwriter sarah mclachlan who offered the breast
cancer fund booth space at every tour stop for the purpose of distributing
information about the project and educational materials that women and men
need to know about breast health.

narrated by academy award and emmy winning actress olympia dukakis, climb
against the odds is an inspirational story of female courage, hope and
survival in the face of breast cancer.  the film documents the 1998
expedition of 12 women -- 5 of whom are breast cancer survivors and 7 young,
healthy women, 5 from princeton university -- attempting to climb alaska's
mount mckinley.  at 20,320 feet mckinley is the highest peak in north america
and located
just below the arctic circle; it is also one of the most treacherous in the
world to climb.  together, the climbers strove to bring an intergenerational
awareness to this disease that threatens one out of every eight women in the
u.s., and this riveting documentary demonstrates the power of camaraderie and
determination in the face of grave challenges.

the documentary also highlights the touching story of marcy ely wilson who,
having survived her first breast cancer diagnosis in 1991, trained for the
1998 mckinley climb for 2 years.  marcy's cancer returned for the third time
in the form of a brain tumor that at the last moment kept her from climbing.
nevertheless, she accompanied the team to the mountain to provide
inspiration.  while the climbers battled the elements, marcy fought cancer one
last time.  climb against the odds is dedicated to marcy.

a compelling call to join the struggle against the most commonly diagnosed
cancer worldwide and the number one killer of women between the ages of 25
and 55, climb against the odds is already earning international acclaim at
various film festivals and screenings including a special screening at
telluride mountain for significant documentary contribution; finalist
documentary, chicago film festival; feature presentation, half moon bay film
festival
and the san francisco gay and lesbian film festival;  best documentary,
imagefest, palo alto; second audience choice, tahoe international film
festival; best of green extreme, salt spring, victoria and vancouver canada;
and finalist documentary, arizona international film festival.

the national broadcast of climb against the odds is made possible with the
underwriting support of farmers insurance group of companies and brita
products company.  the climb against the odds soundtrack is produced by
leslie ann jones and jeanne rizzo.  the climb against the odds documentary
was executive produced by jeanne rizzo and produced by michelson carlson
productions in association with kqed inc. and the breast cancer fund, with
international
distribution by grb entertainment and home video distribution through new
video's docurama label.  other sponsors of climb against the odds include
volkswagen of america, north face and mountain travel sobek.

the breast cancer fund was founded in 1992 to innovate and accelerate the
response to the breast cancer crisis through research, action and policy
initiatives.  the breast cancer fund raises money from individuals,
businesses and foundations through high visibility activities, such as the
momentous mckinley climb, to fund cutting-edge research, educational programs
and patient support projects.

a complete list of artists and musical tracks included on the album is as
follows: "happy girl" by beth nielsen chapman, "across the great divide" by
nanci griffith, "me" by paula cole, "love can move mountains" words and music
by diane warren, "against the odds" by karen pernick, "mother, daughter,
sister, lover" by billie myers, "tell it by heart" by jami sieber, "just keep
me moving" by k.d. lang, "marcy's theme" by laura karpman, "why walk when
you can fly" by mary chapin carpenter, "everything in its own time" by indigo
girls and "fulani chant" by sweet honey in the rock.

i've seen shows where they closed with "galileo" and that seemed to work fine.
i went through a period where "closer to fine" just made me sick 'cause i'd
heard it so much, but at lilith i thought it worked very well because of the
multiple guest vocals on the verses.

what was the name of the song that they did as an encore last year in atlanta at
the fox together with danielle howle and the tantrums?  it was a song that they
said they'd been listening to every day on the tour bus and finally worked up a
cover.  it was a long song that had so many verses practically every person on
stage got to take a solo vocal.  i thought it was great, one of the best group
covers i've heard them do, but i wasn't familiar with the song.  i'd thought
that that was "blister in the sun" but when i finally heard that off of the cd
single i realized that's not it.  does anybody remember this encore and know
what song it was?

ron

p.s.  there's somebody on the list whose .signature includes lyrics from
"sister" and they've got part of it wrong.  i'm pretty certain amy's saying:

set your sight(s) up in the headlights

if someone is willing to organize a cd tree, i will provide my original
remastered wavs to them.  anyone who has the time that i don't to actually
organize this double-cd boot tree should contact me privately.  if neil is
willing to do it, i'd give him preference since i know he can deliver on a
project of this size.

[note:  i purposefully did not tree this as a cd originally because it is
so good that i am concerned that some people would make a profit on
it.  there are people making $s for cd-r's on ebay, and there are some
people on this list making a lot of money off of ig, and it would really
hurt me to have played any part in that kind of mercenary fan-dom.  i
distributed this show because it was too good to keep to myself, but i
don't want anyone making money off of it.  and while i know the vast
majority of you would not purposefully put this into the hands of such
folks, it's still a risk, but it's my hope that by making this offer via a
tree i can preclude such activity.]

most of it sounds like it came from the soundboard, though it is an
audience recording.  the only real problem with it is that the last minute
or so of galileo is cut off, and the beginning of "the boys just laugh" has
a bit of mic juggling as my friend resituated the recorder after changing
discs.  it should be noted that the static on "go" from the levels maxing
out is more noticeable on cd than it is on the tape.

this show was recorded in washington, dc on 8/10/98, the day after their
newport performance, and it was a benefit for ngltf.  here's the track list:

you have a fast enough connection to do that?  i just bought a computer
exclusively for music recording (yay for home studios!) and some graphic
design, and i can turn them into high-quality mp3s and serve the
off my webserver, if anybody is interested.  :)

well, only prob with the recording is we missed the first 3 tracks
(including trouble) and a few bars of gotm. oh, and for some reason, it cuts
out a bit every so often. don't know what that is about. its not a very good
recording compared to our womad recordings (breanna has since bought a
pre-amp for her md recorder and we were right behind the soundboard).

maybe i can work out a deal with someone to get the first few tracks of
atlanta? maybe people would prefer to wait for bumbershoot? maybe we can get
the tracks cleaned up enough once we set up the equipment?

also, once this is sold, i hope not to see it for sale on ebay, even for a
charity. i thought there were some basic tenets of booting, chief among them
being you may not gain monetarily from your booting ventures.

well, i have a cd-r burner but little time. i'll volunteer to branch,

is there something weird you have to do or is it simply drag and drop?

no, i would provide them on cd-r, they hold data too! :-)  and they'll
produce a much better cd than dubbing an audio cd-r (which is never
recommended), identical to my own master.

okay, i'm sort of unclear as to who has the cd and is willing to copy it,
needs it but is willing to copy it, etc... i personally do not have it but am
willing to make copies (i am currently working at a computer camp where i have
access to 2 cd-r drives, but only for the next 3 weeks...)

to cut down on the confusing list traffic, if everyone willing to help in this
distribution could email me and let me know whether you can provide a master,
record cds, or both, i'll post a compilation to the list... let's say tomorrow
evening.

thanks,

no need for that.  as i said this morning:

note the *privately* part.  time-out, please, on the discussion of this on
the list, all that's happening right now is i am selecting the person who i
will send my master wav files to.  when that person has the files, they
will organize a tree by asking the rest of you cd-burners for your
assistance as branches, and the branches will in turn distribute to those
"leaves" who do not have the luxury of a cd burner.  patience, please,
folks -- i want to do this right.  just keep watching the list for news
(and take a moment to *read* it when it arrives, okay?!).

hello all!

i had to stop by home on my way to newport and thought i might post a *mini*
review of the waterloo show.  it was amazing to see the girls back on stage
after a year in the studio.  they looked great!  but can we get amy a new
shirt?

they sang a great mix of new stuff as well as the old. the crowed was really
great when they listened to the songs they had never heard.  rose even came
on stage and sang one song with them.  i really like the new band they have
put together.  the accordion is a nice addition.  it also seems emily is
finding more songs to use her banjo. over all, a & e both seemed to be having
a blast. (sorry i did not write a set list...)

the odd part of the night came during ctf.  i did not see this first hand,
but abfab2008 was in the tent and saw it happen.  it seems a few crazed fans
took it upon themselves to jump on stage during ctf.  jen said that it looked
like they were "petting" and getting very close to a & e who must have been a
little taken aback, for lack of any better way to put it.  i know in the past
the girls have brought fans on stage during this song, but this was total
stage crashing.  and from what i heard, it seems the security did nothing.

it is a sad day when we as fans get so excited that we can't even stay in our
seat and have to rush on the stage.  i am a huge fan, but i respect the
stage.  i have pushed up very close, but without an invitation, i would never
just jump on stage.

keep the faith, show respect, and see ya in newport and spac.

hkf,

here's a review of the stanhope, nj show earlier this evening.  emily kicked
it all off by introducing this as the "first show on the new tour."

since everyone is anxious, the setlist was:
1.  least complicated
2.  shame on you
3.  trouble
4.  gone again
5.  ghost
6.  three hits
7.  cold beer (and remote control)
8.  tried to be true
9.  or (with rose polanzani)
10.  faye tucker
11.  get out the map
12.  love's recovery
13.  compromise
14.  sister
15.  galileo
16.  go
encore set:
17.  kid fears
18.  closer to fine

they toured with a full band.  band members were:
bass-claire kenney
keyboard-carol isaacs
cello-caroline dale
drums-john reynolds

highlights of the show, "gone again" is absolutely fabulous live.  the
audience could really get into the beat and sway of the song.  emily's voice
just carries on the song, floating up there in the rafters.  hearing "three
hits" live is great.  hadn't heard that one before.  "cold beer and remote
control" will be one of the great songs off the new album.  it is phenomenal
live!

however, the night wasn't all roses.  "faye tucker" while good, was weak.
it appears they haven't fully worked out the arrangement with the whole band
yet.  a+e were tight, but john's drums and claire's bass weren't with them.
which brings me to "compromise".  they ended the song rather abruptly.  it
was awkward.  the song just seemed to drop off without any conclusion.
perhaps that's the desire effect, but i don't think so because amy looked a
little suprised.

but then, the show finished on a high note with "go."  this is an absolutely
exceptional song live.  i'll digress and say that "go" on the no boundaries
cd is weak (perhaps the weakest song on the entire cd).  you can't hear the
lyrics and it lacks heart.  however, live, the song really blossoms in way
it can't on the cd.  perhaps those in audience while it was being recorded
felt it, but it doesn't come across on the cd.  watch for this one, it will
cream your shorts!!  i promise.

finally, some general thoughts.  i can understand wanting to tour this
summer (and i can understand us wanting to be there), however, it does pose
problems.  the emotional intensity just wasn't there tonight (both in the
audience and on-stage).  i've seen ig in much better form.  part of the
problem is that the audience hasn't heard the new songs.  therefore, during
each of the 8 (7 if don't count rose's song "or") it turned into social hour
and everybody had to talk and try to pick up the person next to them.  very
annoying and extremely rude.  additionally, they could have used some extra
practice time with the band to tighten things up.

the venue had problems.  sound was spotty in places.  it was an intermediate
size venue (not as big as their big shows, but bigger than their fall/winter
1997 club tour).

on a whole, i'd rate the show on a scale of 1-10 a 7 (in general for a live
music event).  however, for an indigo girls show, it was only about a 5 or
6.  they're capable of so much better and i'm sure they will be up to it in
another few days or weeks.

finally, a note on the opening act rose polanzani.  she was really good.
surprisingly good.  however, the audience was very loud so it was almost
impossible to hear her.  it's definitely worth arriving to the show early to
hear her play.

as for the listmeet.  i didn't meet anyone in the food court area.  however,
i was privileged enough to have met shana (knave4), kristin (kemejets), le
anne (calliopea), and sara at the show.  they were generous enough to share
their blanket (and nice viewing location) and we shared our cookies.

so that's stanhope in a nutshell.  sorry for being so long with my review!!!

cheers,
l'sly

it's interesting how in the heat of the moment...any moment
really...that a (marginally) sane person might lead themselves to
actually believe that a moment of stage time with a pair of favorite
musicians would justify the premature end to an otherwise incredible
show as well as annoying and/or threatening the safety of said musicians
and their property.  so basically, the show was amazing.  most of the
new stuff...what wasn't played during the show was rehearsed thoroughly
at a very public soundcheck.  at the evening show we heard "cold
beer...", "trouble", "sister", "go", "faye tucker", "gone again" and
another bouncy one that evades both memory and recorder...  the
soundcheck included all of the above plus "ozilene" and several of
emily's ballads.

trouble started at the opener.  they sent rose out a bit too promptly at
7:15, so a grand total of about half a dozen audience members were
actually in their seats (tickets stated the show was to start at 8pm).
she played most of her set to a tiny, but appreciative crowd.  amy and
emily showed up about 8pm, and played until the mob.  they closed the
main part of the show with a rocking version of "go", and emerged for
the encore with "kid fears" and "closer to fine".  half way through ctf
i notice sulli preparing another guitar for emily.  trans: they've
finally decided not to close with ctf!  milagrosamente!  so i'm excited
about this turn of events, wondering what they'll close with...and then
it happens.  2 women jump up on stage at the last verse of ctf.  then 2
more.  then half a dozen.  then another handful, until the entire stage
was full of crazed stage rushers.  needless to say, it was a bad
situation.  security did nothing (i think *i* stopped more rushers than
our section's guard did).  without a thought for how that kind of
behavior might make the artists and their band and crew on stage feel.
without a thought for the equipment that might be damaged.  people
simply bounded up from all sides of the stage for the rest of the song.
emily didn't seem too disturbed, and continued to interact with the
crowd, but as soon as the song ended, emily said a quick goodbye and amy
simply exited the stage with her and without as much as a word.

so the moral of this story is...the show wasn't over.  do something
stupid, and you not only screw up the show for yourself, but for the
rest of us who were dying to hear a new closer for an ig show and as
much music as amy and emily were willing to share with us.  hope that 8
seconds of "fame" was worth it...

half way through ctf
i notice sulli preparing another guitar for emily.  trans: they've
finally decided not to close with ctf!  milagrosamente!  so i'm excited

greeting list...i've been on this list for years, but have never posted until
now. what jami stated above is true. after amy and emily left the stage, the
non-existant security people showed up. my sister and i made our way to the
stage and spoke to sulli and a security guard and they were totally not
finished! sulli said they had two more songs left!!! hopefully what happened
didn't leave a&e w/a bad impression of nj.

by they way, thanks to sulli for the guitar pick. i asked for the setlist
too, but the security guy got nasty and told us to leave.
