oh my god!!! how the heck did i miss this!!! i was there.  in atlanta!
argh!!!  oh yea, i forgot, i was snoozing from no-turkey overdose -- but i
did try to convince my mom to go to the benefit for the grady coalition for
affordable healthcare, and to the open mike shootout at the attic, and to go
to the 3fc concert but to no avail we went shopping instead (hmm......it was
fun though -- i love the kid's sections)

my non-turkey day was great for a change -- just mom and me and we even
calmly "straightened" out my gayness.  excerpt:  "mom, i've been this way
all my life."  "but, can't you just find a nice man.  there's got to be one
out there."  "no.  only in a bank vial when and if i need it." "well, i can
still have hope."  "yes.  but i won't change."

and she is still cool with it.

recently gone vegetarian,
nancy

hey all,

i was watching vh1 last night and their countdown of the 100 top rock
stars. when grateful dead came up either # 64 or 54, they did a cut away
to amy and emily. em didn't say anything but amy went on about how great
the grateful dead are. now knowing vh1 i'm sure that this special will
be repeated many many times. happy viewing!

i saw part of it too.  amy talked when neil young
came on as #30ish.  she talked about how fabulous he
is, of course.  but yeah, em didn't say anything, i
wonder why?  damn they're cute, though!

oh - an afterthought.  i've always thought amy's song "little darlin"
had anti-nuclear overtones to it.  isn't uranium (or some metal ending
in "ium") used to make nuclear weapons and run nuclear power plants?
and hasn't it long been suspected of causing cancer?  (or has it been
proven to cause cancer?)  i think of nuclear weapons when i hear this -
to me this is a political protest song against not only the dangers of
nukes, but against a government that condones and supports the use of
such weapons.

i believe (she says scratching head trying to remember physics from 2
semesters ago) that it is uranium that is used for fuel energy and plutonium
for bombs. uranium is used to create plutonium from strontium 54(if i
remember correctly) and all 3 are highly dangerous!!!! not to mention not
your ordinary joe can get them.  they are "regulated" (translation:  we only
like to sell them to future terrorists *aghem* "diplomatic neighbors" that
graduate from sfta)  and yes, they are proven to cause cancer, but not
according to the military -- it's just "poisoning" which is still deadly.
and to think i was going to be a clandestine (*laugh*) for the cia.

first, let me thank all of you who consoled me and my torn heart (amy :) )

here's my dilemma...
my ex-girlfriend, the afore-mentioned heartbreaker wants me to go to
michigan and ohio with her to see the girls. this is because we're
attemptingto be friends and the girls have always been a special point for
us because they're technically how we met. (she was wearing an ig t-shirt
(so actually) and i asked her about the 930 club show, she said she would
try to get me a boot and it was happily-ever-after--well, for a while)
anyway, i said no to michigan, but yes to columbus. becuase we are in
towson, maryland (near baltimore) and it's my car and right before finals.
so, here's the question i pose to the list:

do i go to michigan and ohio to see the girls (22 hours of driving)
                                                        or
just ohio? (and a pleasant weekend visiting an old friend who goes to school
up there?) (14 hours of driving)

let me know what you think :)

so i know i've emailed this before, but i'll be going to the mn and eau
claire concerts this next weekend, and am wondering if:

1. there will be any list meets
2. if anyone wants to carpool from the twin cities to eau claire and
back.

i'm perfectly willing and able to drive (in a nice little rental car
that my company is providing), but i'd just rather not go by myself,
even if i have to sit all alone and stuff. so if anyone wants to hang
with me on friday, pop me an email asap, ok, and we can figure something
out. i'll be driving from the eagan area...

later,
amy

ok so i'm back from atlanta from double checking my bike route, eating non
turkey dinner, sleeping, shopping, and having a generally good bonding
experience with my mum.  for those of you in atlanta i pose a non ig
question:  why does the greenway put a bike path on a highway!!!!!!!  the
map was hard enough to read but then i end up on the dekalb hwy and i said
uh uh uh uh uhuh (still shaking head) no way was i going to be buzzed by
with no bike lane on a heavily traveled road.  i guess its only good at the
weee morning hours.  ok so i digress,  so i come back with a hellacious cold
(argh!!!!!) i'm beat and i actually broke down (yes i had to) when i was in
the guitar center drooling over fenders and gibsons and ... and... and... ok
so i finally bought myself a guitar -- a little yamaha student guitar (hey i
ain't no rock-n-roller yet!)and my fingertips have no skin left (guess when
they say only practice about an hour a day they mean it) but i am gradually
getting the hang of it (way different from a trumpet and sax -- my mouth
keeps trying to blow the notes) so now for the sigc:

i need music and lots of it ig would be my first preference but since i'm
new to tabs i understand sheet music much better.  anyone seen any thing of
this sort?  anywhere?  if not then would someone be kind enough to 'splain
to me what abbreviations mean (like esus and some other ones i've seen out
there on the net)  i also am looking for leo kottke music.  any other
suggestions will be greatly appreciated -- i have little time to do all the
research myself on music that i might be capable of playing.

thanks,
nancy

hi,
due to some unforeseen circumstances we have three tickets available for the
chicago theatre show on dec. 5th, 1999.  the tickets are main floor 2 r, row
t, seats 210, 212, 214.   we would be willing to sell these tickets for
$35.00 a piece (which is below face value plus ticketmaster charges, which
totaled $116.00 for us for all three tickets).  we prefer to sell as a group
but are open to suggestion.  email if interested (nejens@aol.com).

thanks,

ok, so i've got some things running through my head.  do you ever think that
this whole ig list is foolish?  like, am i a dork for having this hobbie?
should i be doing something else?  what if there are lurkers out there who
see me on this list, and they put my name on a list of the biggest dorks in
the world?  oh well!  b/c i don't give a rat's ass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i went to the "concert" for the late smoke's writer, benjamin.  it was ...
really cool.  i booted a couple of songs....mr. cunningham, i didn't make it
to cat power; sorry.  one song really got to me, though.  it's a song
written by stella zine....i think it's called "secret sequined soldier
transgender warrior".

during switch overs, benjamin in his selfless alive body was talking about
god knows what on a tv.  most of what i caught disturbed me.  but something
i think y'all should consider was when he spoke about amy ray not truly
knowing what real broken glass on the floor feels like.  "....all this
broken glass you left behind, won't let you make a clean leave, walk
away..."  if she never really truly suffered, at least not like folks out on
the street getting abused and used, except her own sufferings in her head,
where in the hell does she get her material?  anyway, here's something i had
on file from an interview about smoke...amy's answering and jeff clark (her
friend from stomp and stammer)questioning:

why did choose to use smoke as you backing band on "hey kind friend"?

"i love smoke! it's like love walking into the room. i wrote that song after
traveling around a little bit. these last couple years i'm kind of a recluse
but i went on the road for this song, to run away a little bit from things.
and it's just a journey song. and i felt very hobo-like when i was going
through these experiences, and kind of like a vagabond without a home. so,
smoke was my ideal band."

i kind of expected it to sound more like smoke than it does.

"yeah, i did, too. but it's funny, 'cause to me, it sounds like smoke,
'cause i know what it sounded like before, before we did it with them. i
think the thing that people don't understand is what great musicians those
guys are. it's not like they had to make it their song, you know. like, some
bands we play with, they can't adapt it's gotta be their way, or it can't
happen. but with them, it's not like that. they were really gracious and
wanted to do the song in the way that the song was, even though i didn't
care one way or the other. but in the end i was really glad. i wanted a
little more benjamin in it, but that was a particular day, and it's hit or
miss."

i have some extra tickets for the show in chicago this sunday, 12/5.  a
set of three tix is on main floor, section 3 left, row gg (7th row),
seats 301-305.  another set of three is on the loge 4, row aa (first
row), seats 408-410.  i am asking for what i paid for them.  each set of
three was $131.29.  so each individual ticket is $43.76, which includes
all of those t/m charges.  i would prefer to sell in the sets of three
tix together.  but if you want one or two, let me know.  please email me

i got a new jobat a music store here n my local mall.  i was in there

self-titled.  well one of the guys that works there comes up to me
anlooks at the computer and says "the indigo  girls....that's my fav
girl group."  so naturally i got all excited....:)  then he started
talking his bs.  he has 3 albums, ok, so maybe he isn't obseesed like i
am.  but he said that nis wasn't any good so why bother buying it?
wasn't any good i said?!  i was baffled.  and then he said that
self-titled may as well have been an rem cd?! what the hell?!  at this
point i am starting to get very testy...  and then he did it...he said
well the only songs worth listening to are emily raliers songs.  yes he
mispronounced em's name.  two blasphemies in one sentance.  i told him
that there is a passion that amy has that is undeniable!!!! and of
course i corrected him on the pronunciation.  he said well amy is just
"too gritty".  i said well that's what makes her sound so undeniable...
arrrrrggghhhhh, frustrated!!!  there is just no arguing with a man.  if
he's got his mind made up that's it...  so, i kindly suggested he buy
cons ( since we have a 30% discount) and try to broden his ig horizons a
little more....  sorry needed to vent that to people who would
understand....

hey y'all,

since it is a slow day, i thought i'd tell you about a neat experience i
had last night. i had finished up my lab work early and by luck i saw an
announcement for a screening of boys don't cry here at yale. it was to be
followed by a discussion led by a visiting professor in lesbian and gay
studies. turned out the producer of the film, eva kolodner, was also
present for the discussion. the film was amazing and the discussion was
very interesting. we learned about some of the scenes in the film - how
they decided to portray the characters, and how closely they followed court
actual transcripts etc... we also learned a little bit about the production
aspects, of course, and of the fate of two other projects on the brandon
teena/teena brandon story (one by drew barrymore, which was a fox
production but is now shelved, the other by diane keaton).

eva kolodner says she's working on a project now to get young filmmakers
launched. she said this is a new collaborative workshop for young people
doing film, videos and commercials and releasing in digital format. she'll
be looking for material starting late winter, and this project is based in
nyc.

if anybody wants to hear more about any of this, let me know!

and go see boys don't cry if it turns up anywhere near you! it's an amazing
story. (we went through that a few weeks ago, but thought i'd give another
endorsement...).

obies are so damn cool.  thought you would appreciate this.

interesting side story:  my acquaintance kate, arrested student #3, comes
from a long line of uppity folks.  her father and uncle were arrested and
imprisoned for burning draft files during vietnam, i believe.  dar williams
actually wrote a song about it (i'm not a dar-phile, so i can't tell you
which song, but if you know, do tell).
anyhow.
from http://www.oberlin.edu :

students, arrested, return from soa protest
by betty gabrielli

november 30, 1999--during the november 20-21 weekend, three oberlin students
were arrested at ft. benning, georgia, for committing a high-risk nonviolent
action. the act carried with it possible penalties of large fines and six
months in federal prison. jackie downing, a sophomore from topsfield,
massachusetts, and laurel paget-seekins, a
junior from philo, california--cochairs of oberlin soa (school of the
americas) watch--together with kathleen berrigan, a first-year student from
baltimore, were arrested for entering the ft. benning military base that
sunday.

the three students and 77 other members of the oberlin chapter of soa watch
were among 12,000 united in protest of the u.s. military-training school. of
them, 4400 risked arrest and crossed the line onto the army base. sixty-five
were arrested, and 23 who had crossed the line in previous years will face
prosecution for trespassing on federal property. the arrested oberlin
students, later released, returned to class last week.

the oberlin contingent, including students from more than 22 states and six
countries, left finney chapel's parking lot for georgia november 19. in
georgia, downing--the national soa watch spokesperson for the student groups
involved in the rally--addressed the media in a press conference saturday,
november 20. the student groups were from 42 states and 232 colleges and
universities.

with their matching bright green t-shirts and large signs, the oberlin
group, while not the largest, was the most visible.
"we got a lot of compliments, even from the general in charge of ft.
benning," says paget-seekins.

i'm taking a guess here, but it *might* be "it's a war in there."
i'm probably wrong, though, so if anyone wants to correct me, please do.
i'm horribly curious about this now.

"it's a war in there" is about depression.  not physical war.

ok to me this sounds like the great unknown - "cross the line you'll get
arrested" but i really don't know...i'll have to think about it :)

also, carrie has got me completely confused...are there really two episodes
of hard rock live from vh1??? if there are then i'm afraid i have completely
fucked up....i offered to tape hrl for people but the only one i have (and
the only one i've been taping) is the 97 performance...so basically if i made
you tape and you were expecting a different episode of hrl - e-mail me and we
can work something out.

:( lisa

good morning!

it's caroline, making a surprise return to the list.   i have strayed from
the fold but not from the passion of the girls' music!  i'm trying to finance
my holiday shopping so i'm letting go of some very cool ig stuff... plus, i
don't have enough room to store these anymore!  it is mostly cds but i do
have some vinyl at the end here.  if you are interested in anything, please
contact me directly... i'm not on the list but will be glad to answer any
questions you might have about the following items...

have a good day!

caroline

1.  reverse 1 live cd - has "mona lisas & mad hatters" & "love of the common
people"  my personal fave cover ever!
2.  kid fears cd3 sampler -- back in the day record companies tried to sell
singles on a smaller size cd -- 3 inches... -- hence cd3.  it was also billed
as holding 3 tracks... this sampler has kid fears plus the outfield & one
more band i can't think of right now!  i've only seen 2 of these ever.  cd3
didn't catch on but you can still play this in your cd player.
3.  get together cd - just the single... black.
4.  get together with holiday greeting cd - the single plus a "holiday
greeting"   red!
5.  "4.5"  cd   a greatest hits released only in the uk, available in the
states as an import.
6.  wooden 1200 curfews, sealed #524 cd - rumor has it they made only 1200 of
these... all the same music, different pictures & a pick... way cool.
7.  sots sealed with sticker promoting 1997 tour cd.
8.  get out the map - digipak radio single cd.  just that track with the
desert walk background from sots
9.  sys blue digipak cd - has the tom morello remix of shed your skin plus 4
other live tracks
10.  hitchhiker sampler vol. 2 cd w/i don't wanna know
11.  hitchhiker exampler 2 cd w/ southland in the springtime
12.  bob dylan tribute vol. 1 cd w/tangled up in blue.
13.  nis test pressing w/ track listing sticker -vinyl
14.  sealed dented cans - vinyl
15.  e.p.  - their indie vinyl release with really cute liner notes!
16.  self titled vinyl w/ ownership misspelled
17.  swamp ophelia.  green vinyl, signed & sealed
18.  ctf 7" picture sleeve uk vinyl single
