subject:      nigc - notes on departure and mystery

hey all,
i have only recently gotten back to the list after
missing november and most of this month.

as many of you know, my mom was battling lung cancer. on
november 13, 1999, my mother judith, let go of life and
became part of the great mystery.

i have so much to say, i have nothing to say. my mother
was full of life. it is impossible to imagine the world
without her. but that is the world now. she was so full
of life, her life is still with me, and for that i am
greatful.

i am also greatful for the good thoughts, wishes and
prayers of so many good people, including many on this
list. my mother has died, but i do not believe our
prayers were unanswered. we have been left with sorrow,
yes, but in our sadness we know we are surrounded by a
loving family and strong friends. in the end nobody gets
forever. since that is true it's very good to know that
even if our days are numbered, they are numbered among
loved ones. nothing else matters.
it really doesn't.

so there it is. we are sad. i am lonely for my mom and i
am blessed with a lot of love and care.

thanks again, for your kind words sailed out into the
cyber never never, hanging in air behind the glass here,
electric fragile and transient. they have touched me and
they have helped.

peace,
kc

i  just went over to the "new website"  and
it's  not new.  it's been around like it is tonight since
cons came out.  on the other hand i was over
there the other day  and now that was a different story,  different
pictures on the  home page,  and a different format.   soooo, i'm
puzzled, and wonder what's up over there?

aside from the girls buying the site.

what is goin on with that site?  i went there two days ago and suddenly
everything was different...the message board was different, with old
messages not even showing up...and then yesterday when i went to it
again, the same old site was back and still is....seems awfully odd.
anyone know what's goin on?  are they re-doing it or anything?

    1 teaspoon baking soda
    1 teaspoon salt
    1 cup brown sugar

go to bed. who the heck likes fruitcake anyway?

sydney and melbourne are through ticketmaster but where can you get tix to
other city esp canberra?

also is anyone interested in an aussie list meet esp in syd - as thats the
only place i have tickets for at the moment

( 3rd row centre - i'm so happy :)) i just tried thru the ticketmaster
web site a little while and the closest they had available for 2 ppl or
more was row t in the stalls.
don't panic tho there aren't really bad seats in the state theatre - i was
about that far back last time and had a ball :))

so glad they're playing the state theatre, unlike melissa at the
entertainment centre (yuck! get your binoculars) and ani at the "fire
hazzard at the front so no dancing" enmore theatre.

anyway if any ig fans are interested in meeting in syd email me privately,
i'll be going away so will be off the list for a little while

hey folks,

if you search via the online white pages
(http://www.whitepages.com.au) for "canberra theatre"
you can find out the number for their box office, which
is how i got my canberra tickets.

>also is anyone interested in an aussie list meet esp in syd - as thats the

i was going to organise a sydney meet closer to the time
(but if someone else wants to organise it, all the better
for me!).

i recently ordered a great ig poster  from the site

than on the site. i'm not affiliated with this site at all  but they
have some neat stuff and it arrived quickly, in good shape etc so i'm
passing on the info.  the poster i ordered is the one on the far right
of the top row shown. the writing on the bottom advertises the
bellingham and pullman shows. a nice surprise for me because i can't see
the writing on the web site photo so i didn't know what it said (i
bought the poster because i liked the picture) but i was at the
bellingham show. a nice coincidence.

happy holidays all

not to give the plot away, but there is a point where arnold's

that goes ditto for me.  i'm sure this is the same for lots of
people, so if you get lots of email returned during this time, don't freak
out or anything, because i think this is going on all over the world.
hopefully everything will be back to normal by the 2nd week of january.

any predictions on the y2k panic?  i am concerned, but unprepared.
have y'all seen those 'be prepared' lists?  is anyone really afraid that the
world will end, or do y'all think it's just a buncha hooey?  i'll be in
myrtle beach w/ my gf for new years, but we're takin' the bikes just in case
something really bad happens.

thanks to all of you kind souls who offered advice for my search for my
first guitar!  you are all terrific!

my search is over.  my gf and i exchanged christmas gifts, and much to my
suprise, she got me an ig songbook, my first guitar, and a hard case.  i
didn't even think she knew that i wanted one!

despite all of your wonderful suggestions, my first guitar is a art &
lutherie.  this is the "budget line" guitars from the same makers as
seagall guitars.  even though this probably isn't what i would have
selected for myself, i am very touched by her thoughtfulness.  it will be
a perfect "first guitar" for me.  if i really decide that i enjoy playing,
perhaps then i can treat myself to a fancier instrument.  but for
now, my new guitar sounds very lovely.  isn't my gf sweet?

thanks again for all of your wonderful advice.

i find it, if i do.  if anyone can help me with this...well, email me.

also- y2k - not being a tech-type myself, i am not too worried about the

one way to combat the aol cesspool is to create an alternate screen name to
use in chatrooms, and then block all mail to that screen name except for
your buddy list.  that's also a good security measure, cuz folks in
chatrooms ain't always what they seem...

happy solstice all!

winter started at about 11:30pm est, and right now we are living through the
shortest day of the year.

tonight, however, is the most beautiful part of the solstice. not only is
tonight a full moon, but the moon will be at it's lowest perigee in 133 years.
the night will be so bright that in areas with snow in the ground, it will
seem like day. if you add whatever significace you give to the millenium, this
is a powerful day.

i, for one, will try to use this day as a time for reflection. it is the
beginning of winter, a beautiful and introspective time for me. and if the
clouds stay away, i'll be out walking in the moonlight tonight with some of my
best friends.

happy holidays, and joy in the days you celebrate,

meredith

wow - i adore both of these songs.  i was overjoyed when, after a few
chords, i realized they were playing strange fire.  i had always imagined
what it would be like to hear this song live.  i especially love, for some
reason, the "we come to you..." as it is at the end of the live version.  as
it turns out, emily didn't say "we" she said "i" but of course, how could i
care at that point?  the song was absolutely beautiful and inspiring.  it
rekindled a spirit within me that has been a bit overshadowed recently by
some stuff i am going through.  i am so thankful to those girls...
now, how would a greedy little fan like me get to hear both songs at the
same concert?  that would really be something.  of course, amy would
probably pass out due to all of the passion and energy she throws into her
performances, especially these songs that come from a place so deep within
her.

i remember there was some debate as to whether we should offer mp3s online
for free.

i pulled off this from the transcript of the
                                indigo girls
                                yahoo! chat
                                12.17.99

<<<question: what do you think of mp3s being traded for free on the
internet? do you have any objections to people being able to listen to your
music whenever they want without paying for it?

indigo girls: amy: i don't have any objections to people being able to
listen to music without paying for it. as long as they are willing to come
see us as a live band, because there has to be a way to make ends meet. but
i like the idea of music becoming less of a commodity in some ways. so i'm
sort of happy about it that way.

question: have you given any serious thought to an official reissue some of
your pre-strange fire releases? (and if you need a volunteer archivist
etc.etc...)?

indigo girls: lol! emily: ha, ha, ha - the answer is no! a lot of those
early songs, make me cringe my writing!

indigo girls: amy: mine too, it sucks. we might end up bootlegging them
ourselves. and let them be bootlegs and online trading.>>>

okay, whoever was flaming people before for doing the mp3 thing, observe!!!
i feel that amy herself has given us a blessing to go on napster and share
with other fans (fans that somehow support them.  i only offer a select few
of my favorite indigo songs to try to get people to become fans as well as
rare pre-epic stuff for hardcore fans like me).  i will however email daemon
and ask them how they would feel about a hypothetical situation of the music
of their artists being made into mp3s and shared online.  i can't imagine
that daemon's stance would differ that much from amy's.

love,
julie ;-)

hi everyone,

i sent the following email to someone earlier and then after reading the rest
of my emails from the list realized that others who are going home for the
holidays might be interested.  be aware though that it might not be impervious
to y2k bugs.

if you are unfamiliar with mailtag.com, you might want to give it a try.  i
am an anthropologist and i use it quite often when i have to travel to out of
the way places.  you just go to mailtag.com and in a minute or two you can set
up a free email account.  you can then access your email from anywhere in the
world via the web.  you won't get your email instantly. it usually takes about
20-30 minutes, but it is quite reliable.  also, it is very good for when one
wants to be incognito since you don't have to give any real info about
yourself.

without trying to make a judgement on the rights and wrongs of
mp3s (i don't much use them myself)

<<i remember there was some debate as to whether we should offer

..indigo girls: amy: i don't have any objections to people

..i feel that amy herself has given us a blessing to go on

unfortunately, as far as the indigo girls' major label
recordings are concerned (as well as some, if not all, of the
official independant recordings), sony holds the copyright and
therefore anything amy says concerning them may not correspond
to the 'official' position on mp3s.

same thing with boots. sony don't like it, but if you get busted
the artist's on your side, which is a big plus.

just curious, is this change in site ownership a precurser (sp?) to a =

my favorite releases of 1999, in order:

catie curtis, a crash course in roses
        - magnificent follow-up to her eponymous album
aimee mann, magnolia soundtrack
        - oscar!  oscar!
        - (and the rare "bachelor #2" demos are even better, available at
aimeemann.com )
joe henry, fuse
        - strays from alt.country roots with marvelous results
        - great production by t-bone burnett
jeremy toback, another true fiction
        - excellent power-pop
indigo girls, come on now social
        - branching out but with the same quality i've come to expect
ani difranco, to the teeth
        - ani's trip-hopjazzfusion album!  odd, but fun.
kelly willis, what i deserve
        - excellent country-folk-rock
kristin hersh, sky motel
        - kristin sounding more like the old throwing muses days
sonia, me, too
        - finally back in good form

(i haven't gotten michelle malone or kristen hall's new releases yet, but i
suspect they'd earn a spot above.)

disappointments of the year:  the long-awaited new albums from willy porter
("falling forward") and luka bloom ("salty heaven").

---<>---

my top 25 of the 90's... the ground rules:

o no live cds -- this eliminated indigo girls' "1200 curfews" and bonnie
raitt's "road tested"

o no greatest hits collections

o only 1 cd per artist (to leave room for less consistent and prolific
artists than indigo girls, sheryl crow, ani difranco, and melissa ferrick)

o no cds that you can't buy today (this eliminated releases by mary karlzen
and shannon worrell)

here are the results, in alphabetical order:

the breeders, pod (1990)
barenaked ladies, gordon (1992)
rosanne cash, the wheel (1993)
eagle-eye cherry, desireless (1998)
shawn colvin, a few small repairs (1996)
sheryl crow, tuesday night music club (1993)
catie curtis, catie curtis (1997)
ani difranco, out of range (1994)
pete droge, necktie second (1994)
joe henry, fuse (1999)
melissa ferrick, willing to wait (1995)
indigo girls, rites of passage (1992)
k.d. lang, ingenue (1992)
patty larkin, perishable fruit (1997)
laura love, octoroon (1997)
lyle lovett, step inside this house (1998)
michelle malone, beneath the devil moon (1997)
aimee mann, whatever (1993)
sarah mclachlan, fumbling towards ecstacy (1993)
dave matthews band, under the table and dreaming (1994)
peter mulvey, deep blue (1997)
semisonic, great divide (1996)
michelle shocked, arkansas traveler (1992)
throwing muses, the real ramona (1991)
suzanne vega, days of open hand (1990)

my question.  i have heard that ordering from artistdirect.com causes for
the artist to somehow make more profit.  (being a huge ig fan this appeals
to me.  i would rather support amy and emily the most that i can than
support epic.) i have searched and searched but have been having difficulty
finding this concretely stated anywhere.  i emailed artistdirect.com but so
far no responce.  can somebody clear this up for me or point me to someone
who can? thanks.

the ownership of the site has passed into the hands of the indigoes?  this
is good.  what is your source of info?  what are the implications for the
merchandise sold?  do they make more on it than before? does the fact that
they are doing business with artistdirect.com mean that the folks behind
artistdirect have souls unlike amazon.com?  (amazon.com is evil, they are
homophobic and have sponsored ex-gay websites along with barnes and noble.)
please answer these question for me, at least the ones you know answers for.

hkf's,

by typing in www.indigogirls.com, you get to the new site that is supposedly
owned by amy & emily.  kind of a blue background/theme.

by typing in indigogirls.com without the www, you get to the old site with
that green/black grassy theme.

i know it's brand new, but i like the old site's layout much better - it
just looked better and was a little more fun to browse.  imho!  and i wonder
if saliers & ray need a webmaster or something, hmmmm...?

- an email was sent to people, i guess who had
submitted their address somewhere saying as much.

- if you go to www.networksolutions.com and do a
whois? search on indigogirls.com the registered owner
is now one amy ray (and not sony as it was before.) it
even gives amy's contact address (but don't get your
hopes up) artistdirect appears to be doing the
day-to-day running of the site.

<<(amazon.com is evil, they are homophobic and have

twm would be interested in any sources you have for
this. and what is an ex-gay website?

<<desperate to find an online shopping music provider

http://www.wpmusic.com
is an small independent concern. consequently their
website's not as snazzy as some, but  i would still
reccomend them (for what that's worth).

in fact, i think neil has a link from his website,

that probably gets him pennies if folks order through

i don't know where theis amazon/homophobic thing came from but as a side note
- i think just about anyone can become a member or partner or something with
amazon or barnes and noble...generally what this means is that the website
will have a link to another site - like amazon - and if you buy something
from them after you have used the link from the previous site - then the
previous site will get a small percentage....this is the only thing i can
think of that someone might be referring to...for example, the big big tori
site is run by a fan and it is so large that mike - the guy who runs it - has
to pay for extra server space. as a way to combat this charge, he had links
to amazon and cdnow...so if you bought anything from these two using the
links from mike's page, you would help support his page. i was just thinking
maybe someone saw an amazon ad on one of the ex-gay sites...

so the ex-gay sites are the ones that you know, say how you can be straight
through the love of jesus and how all these other people used to be gay but
since they found jc they are straight now. yeehaw.

i haven't tried to go to the ig site again...but the other day i went and it
was really bizarre cause my computer was like in connection limbo...it kept
trying to connect over and over...it was odd. i guess i'll try again w/o the
www.

retailers included on the greatergood.com site from
whom you can purchase merchandise and have 5% go to
the organization/charitible cause of your choice.

i doubt the validity of the statement about amazon.com
being evil.

peace!

i got this email and thought i'd answer to the list at large.

it is my understanding that besides the epic indigo girls studio
records that we all know and love, and various compilations, put out on
legitimate labels, that there are no other legitimate albums.  yes there are
some promos, like shades of indigo, and club r&r, but those were distributed
by epic as well.  none of these albums are for sale, and were never meant to
be for sale.  the rest are pirated material pressed to disc, and ig doesn't
see a penny.  so really, whether they are cdrs or not is irrelevant.  always
check the lifeblood site for the most detailed info on bootlegs/promos.

and everything yes everything that is available can be gotten for
free right here on this list if you are all patient (next year i plan to
offer on disc: montreal '94, bumbershoot '99, complicated girls, nothing to
hide, reverse one live, and in with the out crowd).  don't bid for artists
you care about on auction, unless it is a legitimate studio recording that
was bought and paid for in the first place.

        just my advice/opinion.

amazon.com is ruthlessly driving small community places out of business.
these community places have given me and some of my friend free ig and tori
promo posters.  but fine.  this does not bother some people and i
understand.
here is what makes amazon.com homophobic.  there is a small lesbian/feminist
bookstore in minneapolis.  it is called amazon bookstore. when amazon.com
came out, the amazon bookstore lost a lot of money because their customers
(myself included!) thought the amazon bookstore was amazon.com.  so they
sued.  as on strategy of defense in the lawsuit amazon.com tried to point
out that the customers of the bookstore were of questionable character
(=lesbians).

hey all~
i just got a cd entitled "indigo girls 4.5" that was apparantly made in
1995 but i had no clue it was ever out. my bosses at work gave it to me for
christmas (how awesome are they?!). does anyone know anything about this
album? also, when i was in the record store i saw that their self-titled was
available in a 24 kt. gold edition. i was tempted to buy it but didn't have
enough money. (crossing my fingers hoping i'll get it for christmas!)
anyhoo.... about this whole y2k thing..... i think it's a bunch of well, i
don't know.. but i definitely don't think the world will end or anything.
some people i know are convinced we'll lose power for a week... but i don't
think much will happen. but we'll just have to see.
peace y'all, and merry christmas.

<<> are these cdr's or are they the real thing?  is there any
such thing as the real thing of these???>>

these are 'offical' bootlegs (as opposed to fan created ones)
and so yes, there is a real thing of them. although toad's was
only cdr as far as i know (more and more 'real' boots these days
are). whether these are originals is a question for the seller
to answer to...

<<always check the lifeblood site for the most detailed info on
bootlegs/promos.>.

and my site:
www.go.to/indigogirls
has some fine bootleg info too :o)

<<and everything yes everything that is available can be gotten
for free right here on this list if you are all patient>>

and even if you're not - ask. pleanty o' people here will trade
or do b&p, i'm sure.

<<next year i plan to offer on disc...>>

you go :o)
this is what we need - less talk and more action!

tara's also offering early recordings 1-3 at the moment. not to
mention my current offer (and more to come - see
www.go.to/neiltones )

<<so really, whether they are cdrs or not is irrelevant... don't
bid for artists  you care about on auction, unless it is a
legitimate studio recording that was bought and paid for in the
first place.>>

actually some bootlegs are themselves collectable, bob dylan's
original 'great white wonder' and 'flower' discs spring to mind
for some reason.

similarly i would say that an original pressing of 'early
recordings 1' (100? only were made) would be sought after.

as far as i can tell, most (all?) of the silver pressed indigo
girls bootlegs seem to have been legal at the time in their
country of origin. they took advantage of loopholes in the
copyright laws (part of which involved the payment of mechanical
rights to the artists and songwriters), which i won't go into
here, although i can in private email. consequently they may
have some value, although how much is debatable.

i'm such a show off, full of himself, loudmouth today*. deal.

i just wanted to tell all of you happy holidays.

it's the winter holiday, whether you celebrate solstice, hanukkah, kwanzaa
or christmas, that seems to get so many people thinking about what they have
been grateful for over the past year.  if it's all right, i would kind of
like to hear what you all are grateful for.  i'll start.
i'm grateful to be clean.  last year, hell last month, i never would have
believed that i could say that.  but today i have seven days clean, and i'm
grateful.
i'm grateful for the god of my understanding, who doesn't judge me because
of who i sleep with, but because of my actions and my motives.
i'm grateful for the program of narcotics anonymous, which gave me the above
two things.  without na, i would not be clean.  without na, i would not have
come to a belief in the god of my understanding.  without na, i would not be
able to be around people who can share with me their experience, strength
and hope to help me stay clean.
i'm also grateful for all of you, pups and ig fans.  you've all been my
friends.  you've all been there for me when i was down or when i needed
hugs.

may you all be blessed this holiday season, and may each of you find what
you seek.

i love you all.

hey, y'all....

first of all, best wishes to tigger for taking the first steps down a long
road.  many have passed this way before....

secondly, whatever your beliefs, i hope that the holiday season brings with
it a feeling of inner peace and contentment; and that those few of you who
are suffering with feelings of loss will find consolation and renewed
hope....

this year, i have much to be thankful for, but it all boils down to music
and friends.  yesterday i watched fried green tomatoes for the umpteenth
time; i still get choked up at all the appropriate places, but i love the
part at the end when jessica tandy (as ninny) speaks about friends as being
the most important thing in life.  in the interview segment that follows the
movie (i have the special edition), jessica (as herself) elaborates: a
friend is someone you can tell anything without fear of losing their
friendship... i'm fortunate enough to know quite a number of people in
various phases of my life who fit that description....

i'm thankful for amy ray and emily saliers, who give us so much of
themselves through their music, and even more through using their public
visibilty to work toward positive social change and for inspiring others to
work toward similar goals.

i'm thankful that in this world torn by ancient enmities, fears, and
prejudices, and plundered by corporate greed and avarice, there are those
who care enough to try to make this world a better place through music, art,
or social activism....

i'm thankful that the internet provides a forum where communities such as
this one can exist.

and on a personal level, i'm eternally grateful that three marvelously
talented young women songwriters thought enough of my playing abilities to
ask me to contribute to their self-produced inaugural cds.  this has been a
year i will never forget....

to friendship, love, and the disappearance of fear.....

peace,
tim

i was under the impression that her newest cd "homegrown" was just available
at her shows and via the internet, but i just found copies at those corporate
giants tower and borders!  of course, it's still better to buy from her
directly because she gets more of the profits that way (bonus: if you get it
from her website, you get another one for half off!), but...just to let you
know, it's out there.  i'm curious--anyone know who the distributor is for
her new cd?  it's so rare that i see indie music here in richmond, va
anywhere except plan 9.  oh yeah, and the igc is that emily lends her
beautiful voice to two of the songs on "homegrown".  congrats to everyone who
is home from school and finished with final exams...=)

happy holidays and here's hoping for peace in the new millennium!

not us in boston, ma :(  i want snow for x-mas and the week following,
but then any snow we get after that (if it lingers for weeks and weeks)
is not appreciated!  i especially hate it when we get snow for months
after, then the winter seems so llooonngg, although last year was
relatively mild :)  it's fun when you can play in it, but when you have
to shovel yourself out all the time, and drive in it, and try to walk on
the slippery icy sidewalks, and otherwise try to function, it gets to be
a drag real fast.  however, i remember the cruel trick mother nature
played on us here a few years ago when on april 1, we got five feet of
snow - it closed down the city for a few days.

happy holidays to all,

elaine (not a winter person.  give me the rebirthing life and warmth
of the sun)

:)  well, i'm from alabama - just about as south as you can get here in the
u.s., and we don't get too much.  we never have to worry about all that hard
work when it comes to snow.  if it does snow, it snows and then in a few
days, it melts away. we don't have to wear ourselves out shoveling!  :)  or
busting butt when trying to get to work or whatever.

what makes this snow so great besides the fact that i don't see it much is
that i'm on vacation in a cabin in the smokies.  :)  a doubly-great
christmas!  :)

here in chicago-land, there appears to be a couple of inches on the ground.
last night was beautiful...wasn't as cold as it has been for the past few
days, and light snow was coming down...big fat flakes.

i hope we don't have a repeat of last year's early jan. snow/cold
emergency...our heater went out and we were practically snowed in for a
couple of days.

there's snow here in iowa (it's so good to be home!)  we've got about five
inches on the ground (and thankfully no ice) and more is due today
(keeping the fingers crossed) and with today's high at 14 degrees it
should stay around awhile.  i love a white christmas!

personally, today's snow has really cramped my style.  i have had to delay my
trip to see my family in ne kentucky because most of kentucky got 3-6 inches
of snow during the night.  same thing happened last year, except it was an
ice storm and we had it here in nashville also.  so, this is the second year
in a row (and the second time ever in my 33 years) that i have had to miss
christmas eve with my family, which really sucks.  the thing is, all the news
stations completely fucked up on their forecasts and forecast nice weather
until last night when they said a snowstorm was moving in.  hopefully i will
be able to drive back tomorrow (5 1/2 hour trip) and come back sunday.

well, at least this christmas i have a cat to spend christmas eve with!

peace and merry christmas to everyone!

this is great news because now more people can have access to her cd more

hello all  you amy and emily lovers,

i want to de-lurk for a moment just to say that this list is quite an amazing
place.  the kindness and warmth shared here is so wonderful.  for me this time
of year is difficult.  i guess it's a combination of being raised jewish, having
difficult relationships with my parents, and the weird kind of capitalistic
insincerity which is so fundamental to this season (in my eyes).

but this list, like a few wonderful things in this life, seems to remain
somewhat pure and genuine.  and for those, like tigger, who choose to share
difficult parts of themselves with us, intimate strangers, i am amazed and so
respectful.

to everyone out there in indigo land, a safe and happy new year...

nancy & susy (and all the orange pets)

people to thwart the vagaries of the russian postal system and get my
package delivered in a reasonable space of time) so i did have a copy to
listen to, but there was nobody with whom to discuss the songs. my fellow
americans were indigo phillistines, and girly folk generally doesn't have
much of a market in moscow... at any rate, i'm glad to be back and back
onlist. :)
i find that, in my absence, my family has finally gotten its act
together and upgraded our computer. at long last, i can make use of mp3s.
does anybody have a clean mp3 copy of either winthrop, chiapas bound, i
wanna be your lover, or american tune? if so, please drop me a line by
private email and i'll see if i can figure out ow to orchestrate a
download.
        happy holidays, y'all -

sometimes i ask to sneak a closer look
skip to the final chapter of the book
and then maybe steer us clear from some of the pain it took
to get us where we are this far yeah
but the question drowns in its futility
and even i have got to laugh at me
no one gets to miss the storm of what will be
just holding on for the ride

julie et al:

<<i understood this but now i don't.  'official' bootlegs?  bootlegs that
are not fan created?  i thought all the ig boots were fan created.  please
explain yourself to myself and others on this list.>>

not all bootlegs are fan created, some were created by record companies or
individuals without the authorization of the igs, their management or sony,
usually on pressed 'silver' discs and not cdrs. for the sake of arguement, i
define (and it is generally accepted) that 'official' bootlegs are those
which have had some sort of organized distribution and are sold through
retail outlets, mail order, etc. fan discs are ususally traded or
distributed for free.

if you go to my indigo girls bootleg pages:
http://www.go.to/indigogirls
you'll find examples of such 'official' bootlegs as well as some choice fan
created ones.

as you will see, the 'official' bootlegs vary greatly in quality and
presentation.
my personal least favourite is complicated girls, which is a truly awful
release - three average audience recordings of three different (and
incomplete) shows. most songs are mistitled and/or misattributed (reunion, i
think, is listed under two different (wrong) names). there is no way a fan
would let this release go. although it does still seem to be popular with
folks, i have no idea why.

all fan released bootlegs are cdrs - the artwork varies from professional to
none at all. the sound also varies but usually is the best that can be
expeced considering the source. fan boots are a labour of love with no
financial incentive involved. with more and more people having access to
cdrs, the number of releases should rise - i hope people continue to put
care into the artwork and remastering and don't just make transfers from
cassette.

i have quite a few privately created discs now that i have recieved with no
art. they all need a little tweaking, audio-wise too (mostly just fading and
crossfading properly) and i hope to make these available with basic artwork
sometime in the new year.

hi and happy holidays to all!

snow here in grand rapids, michigan...about 6" of it.  very pert-ty and
pristine!  it isn't snowing, other than maybe a light flurry or three.

my thanks to all on the list who have been so kind this year!

may your god and/or goddess be with you all ~ in the words of john lennon,

i must go finish cooking the christmas dinner my daughter and i share.  she

a little at a time tonight....and we will go to midnight mass later.  the

just wanted to wish you the best, peace and merry christmas.

a merry hi ho to all those out there celebrating the holiday season.  may
peace and joy fill your hearts and homes for years to come.

it is this time of year that i have a tendency to reflect, as many of us do,
on things and events in my life that i am both grateful for and not.  i
joined this list back in june i think and lurked for quite a while.  it
wasn't until i went to nashville and finally met some of you that i all of a
sudden became more chatty here.  i am grateful that:
1. we have each other here to discuss our favorite ladies and that we
discuss nigc even though it annoys some.
2. my family is healthy, or at least in better health for some.
3. even though i don't have my grandmother anymore she left me with her
recipes and warm kind heart.
4. my two rabbits are healthy and glad cate and i sought a second opinion
when the one vet said we would have to put them both down. they hate me now
that they are in their cage inside the warm house with heat instead of
outside roaming "their" porch in the cold.  i am glad that the male thinks
he's a dog and the female thinks she's a cat.
5. i still have my job.
6. i have met so many kind friends through this list
7. i have at least one boot and information on how to acquire others
8. action figures ;)
9. judge wapner ;)
10. house hunting w/ heather as my evil sidekick
11. i have finally realized at least on of my talents and the
gods/goddesses/spirits/etc. have granted me the opportunity to use it
12. i have no set religion - i create my own daily
13. i have finally gotten over my writer's block
14. i have discovered my own therapy that is free
15. i have the ability and desire to help others
16. i am opening myself up to all the possibilities the world has to offer
17. i am open minded
18. tolerance is not acceptance but it's something better than hate
19. i have decided on at least one road to travel on and i know i will have
to leave behind the ones i'd like to come along but they will still be my
friends
20. i have finally forgiven all those who have wronged me in some way and i
hope that those i have wronged have forgiven me
21. i finally realized what has limited me and have released that anger
22. beccie has helped me walk through my memories to a better spiritual self
23. good council, good food, good friends, good times

peace to all,
nancy

since fans of ig are usually as much of do-gooders as the girls themselves,
perhaps somebody's cousin used to date a man who knew this girl who liked pit
bulls... or something to that effect.   this dog needs some help... argh as a
fifteen year old girl in mn with three dogs on 1/3 acre this is the best i
can do, to spread the word.  here's hoping... ::crosses fingers::

<<hello,
i hope you can help me. about a year ago i took in a pit bull from a
homeless man who asked me to take her. it was such a sad situation that i
could not say no. i have had her a little over a year and cannot find anyone
to take her. i have tried the humane society and animal havens in my area
and all say they cannot and will not take in any type of dog that is a pit
bull or other "mean breed." if i take her to a shelter it is their policy to
immediately put them down. in the past month i have made plans to move to
another city and was unable to find any home for rent that would take
animals. i have no other choice than to take her to the pound and it breaks
my heart. i have tried advertising good home needed for wonderful dog, and
the only type of response i have received are people "think pit bulls are a
statement" and i do not feel safe with seeing her go to a home that would
neglect her or abuse her breed in any way. as sad as it sounds i would
rather put her to sleep than know she would be in the wrong hands. her name
is harley and she is a very special dog. she is housetrained, will walk on a
leash and is an all around good dog. the only problem is that she jumps
fences and will climb the very tall ones like a person so she has to be kept
indoors or put on a chain when she cannot be supervised. she gets along well

with other dogs but she will not tolerate cats. she is very beautiful, a red
nose pit and she is even okay around children. i don't know what to do and
most of the information i have found is for rescue groups in far away states.
i found your address today. if there is any way you can help me please let
me know. if i cannot find a home by jan 7th she will have to be put down. i
know this is a very short time but i have spent all my time in hopes of
finding her a home. she has had regular vet visits since i have her and is
current on all her shots. the vet says she seems to have a scar where she is
fixed. and guesses that she is around two years or older. i would be
willing to meet you anywhere in north or south carolina. i live in
asheville, nc. if there is a fee for finding her a home i will pay it or
find a way to pay it. please let me know if you can help me in anyway. i
also could possibly afford to send her via plane if it is not too expensive
to another state if you could get me in contact with such help. thank you in
advance as you are harley's last hope.

i'm so jealous.....i've never had a white christmas (or hanukkah or kwansaa or
whatever you celebrate!)  i'm in the midlands of south carolina, and it just
doesn't snow here...obviously.  it actually does get cold enough to snow, but
never does :-(  i can't say i'd want 12 feet and get snowed in for a week....but
it would be nice to make a snowman since, believe it or not, i have never made one
in my life! hehe.
so when y'all are gettin mad at the snow, send it my way, pleeeeeease!!  :-)
happy holidays to everyone!!!

hey, if you get any good hints, send them to me!!!
i'd like some guitar hints from all of y'all experts too.  i've never had
actual lessons, but i have a cd rom package that's guitar lessons for
beginners....i can get through half of it really well and then it all of a
sudden jumps to stuff so hard that i get so frustrated cause i can't do any
of it.  if only it went more gradual....if only i had stronger fingers and
more coordination! hehe ;-)
so liz, i feel your pain...literally.

hey all--a late entry on the snow front.  it was in the mid-fifties here in
albuquerque yesterday, with much of the same forecast for the rest of the
weekend, but i woke up to a windowful of big fat floppy flakes.  no
joke--now i know what all that wind was that was waking me up all night!

now onto gratitude:

in my little pseudowannaberockstar fashion, i've been looking at gratitude
lately as entirely too pasee...but i know there are a few things that i am
indeed grateful for:

1) not getting a concussion yesterday.  yesterday, while we were putting out
luminarias, i whacked my head on my aunt's doorframe coming in from the roof
(its about 5'8, i'm about 5'9"), and came up with a huge bump but no
dizzyness.

2) getting along with my mom.  i take it for granted now, but for half of my
life, we barely talked.  now she, her mother, and i are three peas in the
same odd pod.

3) friends near and far.  again, its not one of those things i noticed, it
just sort of happened. i'm grateful to all of you, and to all of my friends
who i know through other contexts and circumstances.  people i can write to
or talk to, who take me at the value just under my face.

4) music.  about a year ago, in the middle of a blizzard, i pulled my guitar
back out of its case and played and played and played.  soon after, i
started taking voice classes, and hooked up with another guy in class to
start playing...now i (or we, depending on night)'m playing open mics a
couple nights a week, and having more fun than i could ever imagine.

5) dance.  what i did before i did music...i still do.  i'm eternally
grateful to barb and sabrina, my dance teachers, for giving me my body
back...not in terms of being in shape, but in terms of living in it instead
of fighting against it.  for teaching me to take up space and find a sense
of graceful fierceness in my big, tall, formerly clunky body.

6) my job.  even if i gripe about it relentlessly, it looked, a couple weeks
ago, like i'd be looking for a new job over the holidays, but i've gotten
switched back into a more stable department, so i think i'll be able to stay
where i'm at.

7) teachers.  to everyone who has supported someone, and taught them
something they didn't think they could do/know/understand, you rock.

8) my health, and the health of everyone i know.  i have never lost anyone
close to me, and i am incredibly thankful.

9) chicago.  for having afordable rent, a decent (not great, but definitely
usable) public transportation system, lots of free music in the summer, a
huge public lakefront, an open air ice skating rink, lots of cool, dank
little clubs and cozy coffeehouses, and good mexican restaurants on just
about every block.

10) the internet/e-mail/cyberyadayada.  so i can find y'all and send you
stuff like this.  so i can keep up with my mom, and friends who live out of
state.  so i can shamelessly print off chords and tabs for every song i
could ever want to learn (and vegetarian fudge recipies, and order chia
seeds for my grandma, and keep track (well, sort of) of all the musicians
and other cool beans who are coming through town).

much love to you all.  peace, health, and the happy holiday of your choice.

:),

hi there,

me, being 600-700 miles from the north pole (and santa claus land) have
been trying to keep myself warm through incredibly nasty snow/sand storms
that have been sweeping across the land for the past couple of
weeks.there's all sorts of stuff flying around, literally:)
in addition to that, it gets light around 9:30 am and dark 4pm, so thats
not a happy state of things here at the moment.
speaking of snow, we have it roughly 6 months out of the year, and our
summers are just a short period of not so good skiing weather:) well, not
that bad, thank god...but anyway, im not at all thrilled about snow, but i
can understand the fascination of those who do not get it that often
(with my gf being from good ol' england).

kate, who's pissed off about her computer/new mle enhanced cd (both?) for
not playing the damn thing...

hey everybody,

hope you all had a nice day yesterday.  anyway, i was thinking about a
and e's comments on their early recordings in an interview i read
recently.  remember they were asked if they would ever release their
early recordings.  they both acted like that early stuff is just awful
and they would never release it (box set was my hope!).  i was curious
what the rest of you think about the early stuff.  i love having access
to the whole process of the girls' growth as songwriters, people,
activists, lesbians.  and every time i listen to the early stuff i have
more respect for those 2.  yes, some of it sounds a little green, but i
think they both showed a huge talent very early, and i hate to see them
acting like it's not worth publishing.  i know if a box set was
available with every single song ever performed by the ig in their
entire history, i would be first in line to buy it!  high horse is still
one of my all time favorites.

what is the general consensus of the list on this topic?  and could
somebody please contact epic right away to get this going? ; )

i have a boot called "blood and fire" which was made by some italian company.
it is packaged like a legitimate release, with good graphics, pictures, etc.
i paid $30 for it at salzer's records, in ventura, ca.  i then donated an
equal amount to honor the earth.

well hey y'sall,
hi im jess from boston and new to the list .... i actually agree on the box
set idea. i have studied theory and harmony deeply and although i have
learned to disect songs i am still always amazed at the girls music. i also
enjoy listening to the evolution ...individually as songwriters and as a
team together .... i try to get as much of the older stuff as possible and i
have to say the "green"-ness as bonnie puts it is actually very interesting
not only is it great to listen to but you hear a lot of their strengths
building up and forming..... i hope they rethink that one....

and by the way where cani find either an mp3 or a boot of the promo cover of
blister in the sun they did for shaming ...might anyone have it?
well anyway....

hi everyone:

i hope everybody had a great christmas.  mine was great (i'd love to hug the
person who invented gift cards), except for one minor detail.

things couldn't have been better.  i had my table all set, it looked beautiful.
i was enjoying my wine i bought at watershed. the lasagne came out perfect,
desert was just about to be served -- and then it happened.  we were talking
about bob's niece's wedding coming up in june.i mentioned getting a new dress
for the wedding.  then all of sudden my mother mentioned that i might need a
maternity dress because i could be pregnant at
that time - which is a possibility.  then i said that i really wanted a baby,
but i keep putting
it off.  then my sweet hubby says, "well, it's either the indigo girls or a
baby" (this is all in front
of my mother and mother-in-law, who thinks i'm a bad wife in first place for
flying to atlanta).

well, at that moment, all of the color went right out of my face and i just
glared at my husband.
after that, i just didn't have anything to say.  i couldn't scream at him like i
wanted to, so i waited until everyone went into the living and leaned over as if
to hug him, grabbed his cheek and wispered "don't you dare ever say anything
like that in front of your mother, because she's starting to believe it". later,
he apologized and things got back to normal, but it still hurts.

i mean, let's access this.  i've been a fan for 10 years and i've been to 10
shows - total! i've
made one trip outside of new england - atlanta.  how bad am i?

i'm sorry for rambling on but i knew you would all understand. i need to get
back now, but
if i don't post again,  have a great new year.

peace and happiness
cathy

found this in an me'shell ndegeocello interview in the 11/99 issue of
performing songwriter <www.performingsongwriter.com>, i don't think it's
been quoted here:

q: you've written most of your previous songs on bass and keyboards.  but
these new ones [on "bitter"] you wrote on guitar?

a: yes, i bought an acoustic guitar for the first time three years ago --
after i did lilith fair -- because i was in love with the way amy of the
indigo girls would just sit and play the acoustic and sing songs.

gotta listen to dar williams, rose polenzani, erin mckeown, lucy
kaplansky, richard shindell, patty griffin, ani difranco . . . and the
queen herself, ms. joni mitchell (i prefer her earlier stuff - anything
before 1976).

i'll step back now so others can add to the list.

patty larkin.  her guitar playing tops even emily's (really, and i love
emily so this is not a slam against her).  carrie newcomer.  the burns
sisters.  eddie from ohio. cheryl wheeler. joan armatrading.

just a few suggestions :)

hey everyone:

i have a request here.

38 years ago, my parents, in search of an extended tax deduction had =
their second (soon to be favorite) child induced so that she might be =
born before the new year.

on december 27, "mission accomplished" and i was born in mountainview, =
california.

for these 38 years, i have detested my birthday. =20
=20
as it doesn't take a nobel prize winner to figure out, after gorging on =
thanksgiving dinner, attending december holiday parties, lighting =
channukah candles and planning for the new years' celebration, the last =
thing i cared about was a birthday. =20
=20
naturally, this sentiment only increased with age.

i have had a wonderful weekend with one of my best friends visiting from =
california and bringing along her beautiful 4 yr old twins (max & =
amelia), my god-children.  alas, they are going home in the morning, =
which brings me to my predicament...

tomorrow night, december 27, my birthday, i will be spending alone.  =
this is not without choice.  i could go out with a co-worker or casual =
friend.  i choose not to.   the next evening, i plan on having a blast =
as the unlv lady rebels host cal st northridge. =20

instead, i plan on working out at the gym and then going to my =
neighborhood pub, drinking a libation, throwing quarters in the poker =
machine and watching mon night football (jets vs. dolphins).

what can you do, you might ask?

just send me a distinct (or non-distinct) birthday wish.  creative types =
can view my profile on the indigo-singles@egroups.com.    in so doing, =
you have the power to make me an extremely happy birthday girl.
=20
thank you and now back to your regularly scheduled ig content.

        beth amsel
some of you who were here last august may recall my, um, devotion
to this fine musucian. jilly tells her story better than i do. she only
has one album so far (self-released - she hasn't even been signed anywhere
yet, to my knowledge) and i would put it on a par with strange fire, if
not even better. and we all know where that went. :) anyway, i don't know
of any way to buy her cds except at her concerts or through direct order,
but anybody who's interested can email me and i'll send them ordering
info.
i would also second whoever it is that said patty larkin, and toss
in the names nields, new mongrels, and caroline aiken.

        mandy

sometimes i ask to sneak a closer look
skip to the final chapter of the book
and then maybe steer us clear from some of the pain it took
to get us where we are this far yeah
but the question drowns in its futility
and even i have got to laugh at me
no one gets to miss the storm of what will be
just holding on for the ride

ok now for go:

the truth is i was afraid
i felt inferior
i felt i excelled in competing with others
and i knew instantly that these people were not competing at all
they were acting in a strange powerful trance of movement together
and i was filled with a longing to act with them
and a fear that i could not

hi everyone,

have you had a look at the indigogirlsdirect auctions?  they are selling
autographed cds and the new promo photos also autographed. have you seen the
current bid prices?  they are in the $70-$80 range right now.  a tour duffle
bag is $380 (i do understand why emily's baby grand is $7,000).  these
prices are pretty scary, but the fact that the profits are going to honor
the earth is very comforting.  i wish they were selling more though.......
(hint, hint to any spies for the girls on this list).  it would make
everything more affordable, more people would buy, more people would be
happy and more money would go to honor the earth.

love,
julie (who can't wait until she she decides on a major, graduates college
and can bid a ton of money for autographed indigo promo photos ;-)

the mud as it gets... and something told me to turn on wxpn(home of

so much...between the radio and popping in cons between songs it was an
enjoyable car trip...i wish the radio stations would play more ig stuff
around here... we're lucky to hear the "latest" radio single once a
month i swear... now onto my question...  there was a song on public
radio yesterday called cheerlader, but of course, my radio got fuzzy
when the dj said who it was by... it was a fantastic song, and i want to
get it...help please

tracks in mp3 format for such a compilation over a year ago, and since he
hasn't been able to finish the project i'm guessing that he wouldn't mind
if you wanted to undertake it now.  i think my collection is fairly
complete, but since my cd's are in storage until my new canam cabinets
<http://www.can-am.ca/> arrive, it'll be a while before i could gather them
all again.

sister  (as played at the roxy in atlanta on 8/5)
sister i'm heading out of alabama
so you'd better think fast
the wind's gonna pick me up now
and the rain won't stop

i'm heading down to georgia
so don't lose track
of where you been and where you going now
and who you've seen and what they lack
and why you come undone
every time you go there
and how you come undone

i know your heart's in danger
and so is your life
you'd better learn to trust a stranger
and stop & rest for a night

see a sign up in the headlights
and a moon up above won't be enough
light the embers of another
and the night won't seem so rough
sister....

there was a bloody beast of burden
on a dark texas road
and a woman in a family way
and a car that lost control
i'm studying the distance
>from the blanket to the gun
it's ten hours to natchez
and another ten home

i know your heart's in danger
and so is your life
you'd better learn to trust a stranger
and stop & camp for the night

see a sign up in the headlights
and a moon up above
light the embers of another
and the night won't seem so rough
sister
go ahead
come on now

it was trust that brought me here
and trust will bring me home

subject:      ig mention: clash tribute album featured selection review
mime-version: 1.0
content-type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

this is from the bmg music services featured selection review.

liz

though the clash's fingerprints are all over
today's alternative and pop (see green day
and the offspring, among others), their
influence is not acknowledged often enough.
                   "burning london: the clash tribute"--a
beguiling collection that features such diverse
                   groups as
                   third eye blind, silverchair, cracker,
afghan whigs and rancid paying homage to
the pioneering punk quartet--goes a long
way towards putting their contribution in
                   proper perspective.

several of the twelve bands invited to cover
the clash's music on "burning london" are
among the era's finest purveyors of
                   ska-punk, a sub-genre that likely wouldn't
                   exist in its current incarnation
without the clash's joe strummer and mick
jones. no doubt kicks things off with their
                   spirited take on hateful (featuring
background vocals by billy idol), which is
followed by an equally raucous rundown of
this is radio clash by the urge. the
                   mighty mighty bosstones sound completely
in their element on the cheerfully reverent
cover of rudie can't fail, while the
                   cali-via-omaha quintet 311 gives a
distinctly '90s tinge to white man in
                   hammersmith palais.

                   "burning london" features some
surprises as well. the more intriguing (and
                   likely the more controversial) performances
are from artists who, on the
                   surface, have nothing in common
                   whatsoever with the record's honorees.
folk/ acoustic rock goddesses the indigo
                   girls, for example, transform clampdown
into their own creation--but it's that kind of
                   style-flipping that made the clash
themselves such iconoclasts. should i stay
or should i go, one of the band's
best-known tunes, is turned inside out by
ice cube and mack 10, who, thanks in part
to a devastating korn sample, turned the
typically clashian rave-up into an evil
gangsta jam. finally, techno titan moby's
                   rendition of straight to hell--which
                   features some
                   appropriately trippy lead vocal work
from heather nova--is so strange, it sounds
like it was waxed on another planet. all in
all, a brilliant set of interpretations by some
of today's most creative musical minds.

speaking about amy's and emily's hair and looks etc.  i like emily's hair
that this moment.  for some reason amy's hair sticks out when she did nsi (i
think i got that right)  i prefer when it was long.  i was taken aback when i
saw it in watershed.  not use to it being so short.

i for one really like amy's hair short (ok joan! i even liked the "bowl"
look)
it looked so cute.
long aint all that bad either
as far as highlights - i am still undecided
my first reaction was uh uh get rid of em
now i guess i'm just used to 'em
i really like the blue shoes too (gawd my gf would be so proud - me
interested in shoes -->stop laughing beccie<-- i am not a femm yet)

emily always looks good (and before i get flamed -- amy does too)
her best i will have to agree was nis
but i also like the look now
especially the camo pants
rock on emily!!!

ok, after finally having time to give my brain a chance to delete all that
damn school work and actually concentrate on more important things like
misheard lyrics and whatnot i have been able to come up with an
interpretation for the controversial line in andy:

"will you take me
out to the fenced hill
sprinkled with horses
wild in resistance to the taming
will you break me"

"will you break me" leads me to think not so much in the line of thought as
"rape" as someone here said, but more will you break my spirit by not
requiting my love?  the subject here is experiencing unrequited love is she
not?
so her breaking would be for that love to be unrequited
dispelling her hopes/dreams for/of andy
a breaking of her spirit by rejection
the taming would be for her to accept that andy doesn't love her (a burden
on her heart)(anyone ever feel their heart sink when rejected?)
along the same lines as taming a horse to accept the burden of a saddle

this can also be more simply put as:
will you break my heart?

imho not exactly a happy song

*clink* *clink*
just my 2 cents

i agree amy's hair look best during the sots period. emily's hair look pretty
much the same to me all the time, but i think she looks better and better
through the years.

also, the ig photo on the new ig website, is it just me or emily look a
little, for a lack of better term, stunned? like someone just point a camera
at you and you go "huh?", the other promo photo, the one they both sitting on
some stone bench or something, emily looks great, but amy look like a raccoon
caught in a headlight? they are both beautiful people and i've seen much
better photos of them, why they keep picking the odd-looking one? probably
it's just me, isn't it?
